- 0:18Speaker 2: Nineteen past five. I'm going to get to the text shortly. First, though,
- 0:21Speaker 2: let's deal with what's been happening at the South Island Pub.
- 0:23Speaker 2: So this pub has had to get rid of some
- 0:25Speaker 2: of its outdoor seating to avoid a twenty thousand dollars fine.
- 0:28Speaker 2: It's formerly the Black Ball Hilton. It's gone through the
- 0:31Speaker 2: latest liquor license renewal plenty of times. This time, all
- 0:35Speaker 2: of a sudden, the seats outdoors are a problem. The owner,
- 0:37Speaker 2: Cynthia Robbins, is with us. Now, Hi, Cynthia, Hi here
- 0:40Speaker 2: they how's it going. I'm very well, thanks mate. You
- 0:42Speaker 2: sound incredibly chipper for somebody's had to rip out the
- 0:44Speaker 2: seats outside.
- 0:46Speaker 3: I've done the crying over the weekend. I've moved on
- 0:50Speaker 3: from that now, but it was pretty upsetting for sure.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:52Speaker 2: I bet. Why is it all of a sudden a
- 0:54Speaker 2: problem when you've done this three or four times and
- 0:56Speaker 2: nobody's ever raised any issue.
- 0:58Speaker 3: I think it's that they're becoming much more stretched with
- 1:02Speaker 3: what's within the licensed area. And because our licensed area
- 1:06Speaker 3: ends at the verandah, because we've only got a license
- 1:09Speaker 3: to occupy the veranda space that anything outside that, if
- 1:12Speaker 3: you buy a drink on license, then you can't move
- 1:15Speaker 3: beyond the license area. And it's never ever been a problem.
- 1:19Speaker 3: So we didn't even think twice about it when we
- 1:21Speaker 3: got our license, just carried on business as usual. And
- 1:24Speaker 3: then one of the district licensing committee members went past
- 1:29Speaker 3: and went into council next day and said not meeting
- 1:35Speaker 3: the license, and all of a sudden, council got arped
- 1:39Speaker 3: up and we got arced up, and we said, well,
- 1:41Speaker 3: until this is resolved, we just can't have the tables there.
- 1:44Speaker 3: And one of them is actually a very very historic table,
- 1:47Speaker 3: in keeping with the Black Ball Hilton being such an
- 1:50Speaker 3: iconic and historic pub, because that table was actually built
- 1:53Speaker 3: out of the bridge timbers that used to span the
- 1:56Speaker 3: Gray River, and when that bridge was lost, those bridge
- 1:58Speaker 3: timbers came up here and that's one of the tables.
- 2:01Speaker 2: So am I right in thinking that that table was
- 2:03Speaker 2: half half okay by the rules, and then the other
- 2:06Speaker 2: half was outside the rules.
- 2:08Speaker 3: No, all of it completely out. Two tables complete the outside,
- 2:12Speaker 3: and they have been if you really want to split
- 2:14Speaker 3: here as they have been for decades outside the license area.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Ever caused a problem, never.
- 2:19Speaker 3: Caused a problem, never had an accident, never had anybody
- 2:23Speaker 3: hit by a vehicle or anything. Just everybody's just really
- 2:27Speaker 3: good and chill with them and it's great. So and
- 2:31Speaker 3: black Ball itself is the gateway to the Papara Track,
- 2:34Speaker 3: the tenth Grade walk, and so now I feel like
- 2:37Speaker 3: the town doesn't look as inviting because those tables aren't
- 2:39Speaker 3: out there with the umbrellas up and looking more friendly
- 2:42Speaker 3: with people sitting there, you know, looking welcome.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Cynthia, what's happened? I mean there would there was a
- 2:46Speaker 2: time we're in New Zealand where were looked at every
- 2:48Speaker 2: outside the rules. But it's not hurting anyone in mind.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Just drive up.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Why are we all of a sudden being such little top?
- 2:54Speaker 3: I don't think all of a sudden. I don't think
- 2:57Speaker 3: it's all of a sudden. I think it's little by little,
- 2:59Speaker 3: chip by chip. This is being done over a long
- 3:01Speaker 3: period of time, and because people just let that little
- 3:04Speaker 3: bit side and that little bit side eventually a whole
- 3:07Speaker 3: lot slip and we haven't noticed it going. And so
- 3:10Speaker 3: I'm standing up for it because I don't believe it should.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Be like that fight at Cynthia, We're on your side,
- 3:14Speaker 2: Thank you, Cynthia Robbins, owner of formerly The black Ball Hilton.
- 3:18Speaker 2: We're not tyed. What we are is it's we're little
- 3:21Speaker 2: clipboard warrior nerds, aren't we That's what we're being. We're
- 3:24Speaker 2: a little knacks anyway. Don't need to go on about it.
- 3:27Speaker 2: I think we all know.
