- 1:57We're on the road to total savings at thorn Hill Motormile US one nineteen in
- 2:00Chapmanville. Of course, the big story is the weather this morning. It
- 2:06is wicket out there, depending on where you live. We've had tornado watches,
- 2:08not warnings, but watches, flood watches, heavy thunderstorms. So I'm
- 2:14gonna go ahead and apologize now because you know, we have no control over
- 2:17the emergency alert system and sometimes it just breaks in not that's just the way
- 2:22the government years ago decided to do it. There's nothing we can do about
- 2:24it. So you may or may not even be hearing me right now.
- 2:28I don't know so, but anyway, this is going to get better as
- 2:31we head towards the end of the day. They tell us we'll keep you
- 2:32updated on that. On the show today, we got to doctor Casey Sackvillbridge
- 2:38Valley to be stopping by momentarily biggest event Charleston has ever hosted, and that's
- 2:43not an exaggeration. Imagine if the two state tournaments and maybe a regatta were
- 2:47to combine. That's how big this USA Cycling thing is going to be in
- 2:53the month of May. And Brendan Quirk is from that organization. He's going
- 2:57to join us to talk about that a little bit later on. Plus,
- 2:59our good friend, which the realtor client for Meek's realty will be stopping by
- 3:01two. Your phone calls and texts are always welcome. Bigley Pickley Wiggley hotline
- 3:06three zero four three four five fifty eight fifty eight in the text line from
- 3:08through three zero four nine three five five zero zero eight. Now, before
- 3:13we get to doctor Sachs, there is a big story I have to get
- 3:15to. Story just broke about an hour and fifteen minutes or so ago.
- 3:19From the Charleston Police Department, a second fourteen year old has now been charged
- 3:23in the murder of a nineteen year old Dunbar smoke shop worker. Now that
- 3:28murder happened on January thirtieth, So now a second fourteen year old has been
- 3:32charged in that. But there's more. Both fourteen year olds, according to
- 3:37Charleston PD, have now been charged with malicious mooding and a shooting that happened
- 3:40earlier in January on Woodward Drive. That victim, a forty four year old
- 3:45woman, was walking with her boyfriend when she was shot in the face butt
- 3:49Wait, there's more. Both these fourteen year olds have also been charged with
- 3:53first degree robbery in an incident that took place in a parking lot on Patrick
- 3:58Street now Jeff Jenkins of a new team working on the store. We've got
- 4:00it posted wv metronews dot com. More details will come out a little bit
- 4:04later on in the day, so we wanted to get you updated on that.
- 4:09All right, that haven't been said. Doctor Casey Sachs, Bridge Valleys
- 4:13here with us. Good morning. How are you doctor, Hi Dave,
- 4:15I'm great. How are you? I am fine? Thank you for being
- 4:18here. So how are the things at the Valley or the Bridge or whatever
- 4:23the cool kids call them. Yeah, things are great. It's been a
- 4:27really wonderful kickoff to the semester. There's a lot going on on campus and
- 4:30we're really excited just to have our students around. We talked about it when
- 4:34you've been on the show, Doctor Sachs in the past, and that has
- 4:38been the nationwide need for drivers with a commercial driver's license or CDLs. It's
- 4:43known in the industry. Talk about your CDL programs that you have at Bridge
- 4:48Valley. We have a wonderful CDL program at the college. There's all kinds
- 4:53of lengths of training. Different companies need people who already have drivers to upskill.
- 4:58They might need their hazmat certifications, something like that. You have to
- 5:01be eighteen to start. That is one of the questions that we get a
- 5:03lot, and you have to have had at least six months of driving.
- 5:09So if you're a young person and you're thinking maybe commercial driving could be for
- 5:13you, get your drivers permit, start driving now while you while you're young,
- 5:16and as soon as you turn eighteen, you can sign up for the
- 5:18certifications. And I said last time you were on the show that if you
- 5:21are if you are drug free and you've got a CDL, you will not
- 5:28have a problem finding a job, not only here in this area, but
- 5:30anywhere for that month. That's right there. There's about two million CDL drivers
- 5:34in the country, so that's more than there are people in West Virginia,
- 5:40and they there's a huge need. And so it's everything from driving buses locally,
- 5:44driving any kinds of trucks or equipment locally. Yeah, it's not as
- 5:47we talked about last time, doctor, it's not just about you know,
- 5:50your eighteen wheeler drivers. There's a whole lot more to it than that.
- 5:53But there's that too. So if sure, yeah, travel's good for you,
- 5:56that's great, But if you want to be home with your kids at
- 5:58night, you want to be home at five o'clock, you can possible,
- 6:00you can be You did something out there a couple of days ago I was
- 6:03reading about called Meet the Majors Monday. What was that all about? So
- 6:06we like to do Meet the Majors, especially in the spring term, to
- 6:10help people in the community really get to know what your options are at the
- 6:14college. Things like medical lab tech are really great jobs in the community and
- 6:17not something that you necessarily know about immediately. If I tell you we have
- 6:21nursing, you know what a nurse is. But an MLT is a person
- 6:25who looks at sells in the hospital to decide is this COVID or is this
- 6:29the flu? And so you need those our hospitals. CAMC will hire every
- 6:34single MLT who we make right now. But it's harder to get people into
- 6:39those majors because you sort of don't know about those things. So we try
- 6:42and do an introduction Meet the Majors for those kinds of program areas. I
- 6:46think it's really interesting too, you know, going back thirty some odd years
- 6:50when I was in college, you know you're wondering, Okay, what are
- 6:53you going to do after you graduate? With these programs that you've got at
- 6:57Bridge Valley, you don't have to wonder. The only question is is like,
- 6:59where do you want to work? Because you've got these these partnerships with
- 7:03so many people you mentioned CAMC and others in various fields. Your job's waiting
- 7:08on you. And many times you start your job before you graduate. That's
- 7:11true. We try really hard to have our students start their job before they
- 7:14graduate, and our majors are very practical, and so I think to that
- 7:18point, Dave, you really see students come to school with us because they're
- 7:21going to major in something like cardiacconography. It's very clear that you're going to
- 7:26go into cardiacsonography if you major in that, where something like history might be
- 7:30a little bit more obscure. I get it. It's nine fourteen. We
- 7:33talk to doctor Casey Sackellbridge Value to Dave Island Showing five eighty Live is brought
- 7:36to you by your hometown baseball team, the Charleston Dirty Birds. Get ready
- 7:40for the Mounted Ears and the Thundering Herd back at the ballpark on Tuesday,
- 7:43March twelve. Takeing information, you can visit Dirtybirds baseball dot com or check
- 7:46out the dirty Birds social media pages. Speaking of Marshall University, I always
- 7:50like to have an opportunity to throw in Marshall when I can get an agreement
- 7:56of swords. I understand with Marshall talk about that we do. We just
- 8:00and articulation agreement so students who go through our business program can seamlessly transfer to
- 8:05the Marshall Business Program. We're really excited because we're going to do even field
- 8:09trip experiences with our students. That Brad Smith School of Business up at Marshall
- 8:13is pretty spectacular, and so we want to make sure that Bridge Valley students
- 8:16can seamlessly transfer. And if you do your first two years at Bridge Valley,
- 8:20it means you've saved thousands of dollars and you'll still graduate with that Marshall
- 8:24bachelor's degree. And it's very very important to do that again. And I
- 8:26think hats off to Marshall for being one of those institutions again. I mean,
- 8:31it's an institution of higher learn but it's also a business too, and
- 8:35that is willing to step up to the plate to help you out with that.
- 8:37I mean, I'm just perusing like your social media pages. You got
- 8:41it something called a self care fair going on here? What is that all
- 8:45about. We try and do lots of things for students to get them to
- 8:48think about their own well being. One of the reasons why we see students
- 8:52who take a pause from college is often because they have kids, they have
- 8:56other jobs, they have lots of stuff going on. And so one of
- 8:58the things that we found is the more we can do to help students think
- 9:01about how do I take care of myself so I can be a better community
- 9:05member and a better family member, the more likely they are to stick with
- 9:07their program and actually finish. That's something called Sophomore Saturday. Happen Saturday.
- 9:13We do have a lot going on, You're right, Dave, So Sophomore
- 9:16Saturday. One of the things that we've seen is that families need a longer
- 9:20on ramp to think about what they're going to do for college. And if
- 9:24we start talking to students in their junior and senior year, sometimes that's a
- 9:26little bit too late to really have parents and grandparents to get to weigh in
- 9:31and think what are you going to do? And so we've started a Sophomore
- 9:35Saturday where we're inviting families to campus to see campus, to see the program
- 9:39areas to really start students earlier thinking about what kinds of things they might want
- 9:43to do. Nine seventeen, Doctor Kacie Sachss Here did I read something about
- 9:48black Hawk? I wasn't sure. It was that the mining company of the
- 9:50helicopter the mining company. All right, what do you got? So we're
- 9:54so excited. Black Hawk is starting a black Hawk co op with us and
- 9:58the program will give students five thousand dollars up front to go into diesel welding
- 10:03or electrical engineering and they get a job with Blackhawk. So they'll work at
- 10:09Blackhawk three days a week, come to school with us two days a week,
- 10:11and they'll be getting paid because they have a job. And the idea
- 10:15is that Blackhawk really wants students out of those three programs, so they're trying
- 10:18to find incentive ways to get to recruit them upfront, which is the money
- 10:22to pay you to go into that area and to take that job with them,
- 10:26so that they'll see more students who graduate and then stay with them.
- 10:30I know we've thrown a lot of information, as every time doctor Sacks is
- 10:33on the show, we do I thrown a lot of information in your way.
- 10:35They do such a great job with their social media. Every thing's available
- 10:39on the website. Give us the website Bridge Valley dot edu. Can't beat
- 10:43it all, right, Doctor Kase Sachs, I appreciate you being here.

- 13:28going to release Jimmy Riston's breathalyze the results or do we need a foia to
- 13:31come out to me? There's only one reason they won't release results. I
- 13:35think there's about to be some more news break in the Jimmy Riston story.
- 13:39This is, of course, the Department of Transportation head who last week Tuesday,
- 13:45I think it was, was accused of driving erradically. The governor talked
- 13:48about it in his press or last week, and it's an ongoing investigation with
- 13:52the Charleston Police Department. The only thing I can tell you about an ongoing
- 13:56investigation is it's ongoing and there's more information breaks on that. I'm got a
- 14:01little intel this morning that there may be something breaking on that in the very
- 14:05near future. We will, of course talk about it on the show and
- 14:07keep you updated. Wv Metronews dot com, Whsnetwork dot com as well.
- 14:13Good friend Rich the realtor is here. Good morning. I want to go
- 14:18to you in the traffic copter. Rich. Yeah, and you drove in
- 14:20through You drove in from the tays as we call it, hourly, from
- 14:24the wind field, from the wind, from the wind, from from the
- 14:28wind field. How are How would you drive in this morning? Body?
- 14:31It was pretty rough. There was quite a bit of wind and standing water
- 14:35on the roads. And just I advise people to stay away from a little
- 14:37bit if you can. I mean, I'm here because I'm dedicated to you
- 14:41and real estate. But it's going to get better, as they say a
- 14:45little bit later on now. I did, just a couple of months ago
- 14:46receive information that the tornado watched very different. Make sure you know the difference
- 14:52between the watch and a warning. They're not the same thing. A tornado
- 14:54watch means that conditions could be favorable for the development of severe storms, not
- 14:58necessarily tornadoes. You see something that's a warning, it's time to go,
- 15:01get in a closet or in a bathtub. But we don't have those for
- 15:05this area right now. We do have a tornado watch for the area and
- 15:09that's been extended I think till around like ten o'clock or so this morning.
- 15:11The severe weather is expected to continue after that, but as rich said,
- 15:16just be careful and slow down and maybe put off your trip a little bit
- 15:18if you can, till maybe later on today. Although one thing about later
- 15:22today, it's going to get a whole lot colder, it is, that's
- 15:24what I heard. Just see what happened? I mean, you know,
- 15:26I know this is not you know, Brian Hughes Weather Show here, but
- 15:30did you see that in Chicago yesterday the temperature dropped from eighty six degrees to
- 15:35twenty six degrees in a matter of moments. It went from eighty six to
- 15:39twenty six coming down from that Canadian weather pattern. I guess. I mean,
- 15:43that's that's insane. And I'm not going to get into the discussion about
- 15:46climate I'm a believer in climate change. Where I draw the line is is
- 15:52how much does man actually have to deal with it? And how is how
- 15:54much of it is Mother Nature just saying, well, you know what,
- 15:58I'm still in control of this thing, but there's some weird things happening.
- 16:00All right. We're not going to talk about the weather anymore. Le'll talk
- 16:03about the housing situation in the valley. Richard has it gotten any better since
- 16:07the last time you were added. We suddenly have some big developer to come
- 16:11in to build like three hundred more homes in the Kanaw Valley because that's what
- 16:12we need right now. It is what we need and unfortunately know and it's
- 16:17actually the inventory levels are actually slipping a little bit. We're down to about
- 16:22where we were at our worst case during the peak of COVID. So,
- 16:27I mean we when the raids went up in the fall of twenty one,
- 16:30they the listing inventory got up to about five hundred and seventy or five hundred
- 16:34and eighty somewhere in that area, and we're down now. I didn't look
- 16:37this morning, but it was somewhere between five fifty and five or sorry,
- 16:41four fifty and four sixty. You know, they'll get thirty homes listed in
- 16:45our Cana Valleyboard or realtors that is encompassing eleven counties. We'll get thirty that
- 16:51are listed in a you know, a couple of day period, and forty
- 16:53will go pending. So it's just there are so many buyers out there that
- 16:57wins up and hits the mark good and it's ready to go. It's yeah,
- 17:03it's gonna be uh, you know, it's competitive, and you have
- 17:07to bring your best game right up front. I mean, you know,
- 17:10it's I was talking to some friends of mine the other day and they were,
- 17:12uh talking about they had just paid their house off, and they thought,
- 17:17well, it's okay, it's it's gonna be it's gonna be nice to
- 17:18be debt free. But then the other one in the couple's married a couple
- 17:22of the other one said well, you know what, we could get a
- 17:25mint for for this house right now. But then comes the problem rich and
- 17:30then where do they go because there's not even we have a shortage of quality
- 17:33rentals in the area. Not just homes to buy, we have a shorty
- 17:37shortage of quality housing for you know, for townhouses. Plus the influx of
- 17:41people that are moving into our area. You know, we just to have
- 17:45that they fill the rentals up, and you know, and of course the
- 17:48Meeks Realty Group has a property management group on the other side, and they
- 17:52are, you know, they're full, they're waiting lists in some certain cases.
- 17:56And I just talked to you know, our good friend James just that
- 18:00if you had a single family home and you wanted to rent that, it
- 18:02would be shocking if it doesn't rent in the first day. I mean,
- 18:04it's just because there's so many people out there looking and I don't want you
- 18:08to rent. I'd rather sell it. But so you and James are at
- 18:11odds with each other a little bit in that regard. But but here's the
- 18:14thing about it, Rich is and I want you to kind of clarify this
- 18:17is that people to this show all the time, but a lot of times
- 18:19it's a politically based talk show. So sometimes we have people that, no
- 18:23matter what happens, are not going to give credit whatever you see this every
- 18:29day, there are a heck of a lot of people moving into West Virginia,
- 18:33would you And that's not a political statement, that is a fact.
- 18:37Talk about what you see. There's absolutely people coming and looking for housing and
- 18:41looking for homes, and you know, we you know, one of my
- 18:42listings is currently under contract with a new core person, so you know,
- 18:48have good thoughts and prayers that that will go through. But they are already
- 18:51here and they are definitely here coming by the waves. Yeah. Indeed,
- 18:57talking to Rich Klein from Meek's Realty this morning, Eve Dave Allan showing five
- 19:02Indy Life broad to you a part by Husband's Pizza. Get an eighteen inch
- 19:04pepperoni pizza at a pizza bowl only twenty two ninety nine. To find your
- 19:08nearest Hussins at Huston's Pizza dot com for pickup, for dining or for delivery.
- 19:12All right, so I have hired Rich the realtor to be my realtor.
- 19:17How smart? What do I do to make my home stand out other
- 19:22than the fact that the buyer would have the pleasure of knowing that it was
- 19:23owned by me and that there's still a bunch of Dallas cowboy stuff, you
- 19:26know, probably up in the garage, and I encourage you to get rid
- 19:30of all the clutter and the things that are detractors. Send the Steelers fan.
- 19:33Yeah. So, but from a seller's perspective, I mean, you
- 19:37just have to have this thing pretty tight, and you know, I would
- 19:40look at some of the deferred maintenance and if you can tidy up, you
- 19:42know, things that you've just been putting off a little bit. Some paint
- 19:45would help in fresh carpet cleaning and getting rid of odors. And we always
- 19:49tell or you know, recommend to sellers that they declutter really as much as
- 19:56they can remove pieces of furniture to make the spaces look bigger, make sure
- 20:00all the lights are on and all that kind of stuff, just to make
- 20:03it look like it's you know, ready to go. And curb appeals,
- 20:06particularly here in the spring, will be important that you want to get out
- 20:08there in your yard and clean up all of the you know, the debris
- 20:11that builds itself up over winter and get rid of the sticks. And there's
- 20:15going to be more today, So it's gonna be a few little Yeah,
- 20:18I wait till the after today's over. But yeah, from a seller's perspective,
- 20:22that's what I would do. Now. From a buyer's perspective, if
- 20:25you want to, you know, talk about like how do they make their
- 20:26offers competitive and stand out and like that, And that's really what we're working
- 20:32with these days, is that those you know, there are ways to do
- 20:36that, and you know, lots of people will make offers on homes and
- 20:40not get them, and they're it's very discouraging, but you have to keep
- 20:42going. And there's a there's a clause in our contracts that has kind of
- 20:48made its way to our board in the last few years. It wasn't around
- 20:49a long time, but it's an escalation clause where you can, you know,
- 20:52you offer a certain amount of money, but you're willing to escalate that
- 20:56all the way up to another amount of money. So you want to offer
- 20:59them too, but you're willing to go to to twenty so and then you
- 21:03that that clause would beat any other offer, and you can establish how much
- 21:07you want to beat them by. You beat them by a couple of thousand
- 21:08dollars all the way up to that number that you want to go to.
- 21:15We're getting multiple offers with all of those have escalation clauses, so it's it
- 21:21is a very competitive world of buying. And I would just tell you that
- 21:26another option would be to talk to your lender and kind of go from a
- 21:30pre approval to or sorry apart from a pre approval into the all the way
- 21:36into the conditional approval level with your lender ahead, and you can have the
- 21:40lender rather than send just a generic guess, I can get them qualified,
- 21:45have them send a little like, hey we already have these people. Go
- 21:47well, they'll go right to the to the conditional approval level. And that
- 21:52can help sometimes too. Well a text say isn't it true that twenty years
- 21:56ago, Charleston's population was fifty eight thousand. Now it's under forty eight.
- 21:59I just don't see the growth. Maybe there is growth, but the facts
- 22:02say otherwise. Well, I mean you've got to understand too, when it
- 22:04comes to population and things of that nature, that we're looking at numbers that
- 22:07are usually a couple of years old, and we're talking about what And now
- 22:11this is not to discount what the text're saying. No, they're completely I
- 22:15mean within the city limits right, well, but even in the in the
- 22:18Kanal Valley, I mean, there's about fifty percent less people here than what
- 22:21there used to be. However, anytime you're looking at these numbers, you're
- 22:25looking at numbers that are usually, according to the census, you know,
- 22:26a couple of years old, so we don't have what we're seeing is in
- 22:30real time and what you're seeing, So what if you want to see what's
- 22:33happening in twenty twenty four, you're going to see those numbers concrete come out
- 22:38from the government in twenty twenty five or twenty twenty six, whenever the census
- 22:41is yeah. Yeah, So with all the ways rich that one can go
- 22:47about buying a home online, mainly of course, and with all the ways
- 22:49you can go about beginning the search for a home. I'm gonna ask a
- 22:55real dumb Please don't please, don't strike me with your with your fist or
- 22:57anything. I'm just asking the question, why go with the realtor? I
- 23:00mean, there's all these different things. You see the ads for them all
- 23:03the time. You can go online, you can look at why go with
- 23:06the realtor for either buying or selling? Well, primarily the answer to that
- 23:11is our representation. So you know, a real estate transaction can be very
- 23:14complex, takes It takes a pro to be able to get you through those
- 23:18contractual agreements, and you need somebody who understands that process, who has a
- 23:23group of our list of referrals to help get you to the right people to
- 23:26have a successful closing. That's the representation part of that. The other part,
- 23:32you know, from the buyer's perspective, is that because everything is online
- 23:34and you can search on those secondary sites, you know the want rhymes with
- 23:40willow and those kind of things, so it will not be named by you.
- 23:45Is that what you're saying? It will not? So you know you
- 23:48need realtors often have off market or coming to the market soon options. So
- 23:52in this competitive world where you're waiting on one of those sites to like,
- 23:56yeah, you're looking every day, and you're like, I'm searching same criteria
- 24:00of where I want to be in the meantime, relter sometimes know, if
- 24:03I've got a seller who I know is going to list in two weeks from
- 24:07now, that's not on willow Right, so I would be able to talk
- 24:10to my particular set of buyers who I have on the other side looking,
- 24:12I'm like, hey, I'm going to try and get them that house first.
- 24:15You know, if we can get them in the contract and the buyers
- 24:18and sellers agree, that house is not even going to hit the market.
- 24:21So you need a realter because we're all that way, all the relters are
- 24:23that way. We have this, we have that group of our own past
- 24:27clients and all of that stuff happening. So you need you need representation to
- 24:33navigate those contractual technically technicalities, but you also need someone who's ahead of you
- 24:38on the search well. And sometimes it's all about rich relationships too. You
- 24:45know, you get to know these people and they know you know, if
- 24:48I go online and I'm just looking at a you know, Facebook yard,
- 24:51saleor or that as you said, that site that rhymes with willow. I
- 24:53like that, you know, and I can maybe reach out to them myself.
- 24:59But I still think there's something to be said for relationships. If you
- 25:02know, my wife and family are looking for a home and I've get this
- 25:06relationship built with you, you know, you and other quality realtors are going
- 25:10to know, Okay, this is what this is the kind of neighborhood they
- 25:12want. They want a neighborhood that's loaded with kids. They want a neighborhood
- 25:18that's that's close to their school. They want a neighborhood, and that's not
- 25:21something that you're going to necessarily be able to get from a computer. Yeah,
- 25:23often they think that they'll be able to cut the realtor and those brokerage
- 25:27fees out by doing it without us. But I don't know what the statistics
- 25:33would say, but I would most likely promise you that from a seller's perspective,
- 25:37if you think you can do it, you probably could do it.
- 25:41But we could do it and actually probably sell it for more than what you
- 25:45would sell it for, and you would have the representation, the protection of
- 25:48the legal part of that too. Before we let you go on to quickly
- 25:52talk about commercial property. I know that I kind of walked in on a
- 25:56conversation you were having somebody out there in the hallway earlier about commercial property.
- 26:02There's a ribbon cutting of yet another business. I think I'm not going to
- 26:04be able to attend it. But there's a ribbon cutting of another business I
- 26:07have opened up in Tay's Valley this morning at eleven o'clock. It seems if
- 26:11you follow the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce, and I'm sure it goes on
- 26:15in other areas too, but especially in Putnam County, you just see one
- 26:18new business after another coming in. It's insane. It's two or three a
- 26:22week. Yeah, it's two or three a week, is what's opening up.
- 26:25And of course not all of them are going to succeed, and we
- 26:26certainly hope that they do. But if you are in the market for a
- 26:30commercial property, you decide, Okay, I'm tired of working for this person.
- 26:33I want to work for myself. I want to open up that restaurant,
- 26:37or I want to open up this, you know, the shop that
- 26:41boutique specializes in whatever. Or if you're looking to sell a commercial property,
- 26:45what do you do for commercial property. I mean it's a similar kind of
- 26:48a deal where from the selling perspective is that we can help market that in
- 26:52a way to all of our commercial buyers. And you know, there are
- 26:55a lot of times those commercial listings are not within our mls, but they're
- 26:57listed on other sites which we are members of and can market that appropriately.
- 27:02But we also have a group of investors and commercial buyers that are you know,
- 27:07just out there. We know what they're looking for and can often try
- 27:10and match them up with what with that right spot, whether they're doing a
- 27:14boutique or a restaurant or a live you know, a bookstore, something of
- 27:18that nature. So it's you know, commercial is a little slower than the
- 27:21residential. The demand is lower for sure, but it is still it's still
- 27:26going. I mean, commerce from that perspective is still going. So all
- 27:30right, where can people reach out to you, Richard? Yeah, you

- 32:12mainly because of all the ground it's going to cover and because of the
- 32:15length of it. May fourteenth through the nineteenth, the USA Cycling Pro Road
- 32:19National Championships are going to take over the city. And as we get closer,
- 32:22I'm going to have folks in from the police and Fire Department, the
- 32:25Mayor's office to talk about logistics, because if you're in Charleston every day,
- 32:30your life's going to change for those days. I want to talk about the
- 32:31organization though today itself. Brendan Quirk is the CEO of USA Cycling and he
- 32:37is in town doing a little prep work, if you will, along with
- 32:40the Charleston Convention, visitors, bureau folks, and he joins us this morning
- 32:44from the par Mar Stores studio. Brandon, good morning, welcome to the
- 32:46show. Well, thank you, happy to be here, excited to be
- 32:49in Charlesto. Now, where is a home for you? Were you out
- 32:51of we are? The USA Cycling is based out of Colorado Springs, Colorado.
- 32:54Man, that's definitely cycling area out there in Colorado. What exactly is
- 33:00in the USA Cycling Pro Road National Championships will be coming to Charleston in May.
- 33:04So it's actually not just one race, but it's three different races,
- 33:07three different types of races. If you've ever seen the Tour de Frances,
- 33:09the road race, that's really the marquee event. We'll have that going on.
- 33:14We'll have a shorter, tighter race called the Criterion if you imagine like
- 33:17the Bristol NASCAR race. We're gonna have that going one night in the middle
- 33:22of downtown. And then we have what's called a time trial, which is
- 33:24just man against the clock. We've got individuals racing against the clock. We'll
- 33:29have that race as well. We're gonna have it for professionals. We're gonna
- 33:31have it for the under twenty three category if you think like minor league baseball,
- 33:36These are the up and comer type of athletes. And then we're gonna
- 33:38have the junior seventeen to eighteen category as well, So it's three different categories
- 33:44of men. We'll love women. We'll have three races, and that's why
- 33:46it's six days long. But it's gonna be a lot of excitement people coming
- 33:49from all over America to come here and race and to come here and watch.
- 33:52It's a big deal for us, it really is. And Charleston is
- 33:55going to be hosting. How exactly was Charleston chosen to do this, Well,
- 34:00we run a process where we put a request out there for cities across
- 34:07America, do you want to host this event. We've had this in amazing
- 34:09cities in the past. We've had it in Philadelphia, We've had it in
- 34:13Knoxville, We've had it in Chattanooga, a lot of other places. Charleston
- 34:16put a bid in front of us. They're like, hey, look,
- 34:20we are the most unbelievable metro area in the middle of outdoors you're ever going
- 34:25to see. You've got to come visit and you will believe. And we
- 34:28did and we were just blown away at how beautiful it is, how welcoming
- 34:30the community was, and for us, it was a no brainer decision to
- 34:35come here. We're here. It's not just next year, but it's for
- 34:37the next five years. Five years. Yeah, I mean, now,
- 34:39is that the way that you normally do that you normally do like a five
- 34:43year contract type be on every time, normally it's five years. Because where
- 34:46has it been before? Well, we came to the last believe it or
- 34:50not, the last seven years we were in Knoxville, Tennessee. Now,
- 34:52COVID made it so that it ended up being longer than five years, but
- 34:57Knoxville was a long stay there. I think Notville was the second longest day
- 35:00we've ever had. We're in Philadelphia for a long long time as well,
- 35:04but again, been in Chattanooga, I've been in Greenville, South Carolina.
- 35:07You know those are those are the cities where we had the biggest stays in
- 35:10the past. Talking to Brendan Quirk again, who's the CEO of USA Cycling
- 35:15for this big event that's going to be in Charleston, A Dave Island showing
- 35:17five eighty Live broad to apart by Morgan and Morgan, America's largest injury law
- 35:22firm. If you're injured, visit for the People dot Com and Brenda.
- 35:24When you take in take the number that you mentioned, all the cyclists,
- 35:30plus there's gonna be a whole lot of media covering this. You'll have the
- 35:34very I'm gonna imagine your ESPNS are going to be here, and your Fox
- 35:37Sports and all these other people are going to be in fuss family and team
- 35:40members. There's a lot of people. It's a lot of people that they're
- 35:44going to be in Charleston for five days, if not longer, because you
- 35:46got time getting ready for it. There's gonna be a lot of people here.
- 35:50You know, it's so beautiful here. I think the spectators are going
- 35:52to bring their own bikes just go ride and discover the you know, the
- 35:54terrain around here. So we're excited. I think this year. You know,
- 35:58one reason why it's so is that the time trial event, which as
- 36:01I mentioned before, is when individuals are racing against the clock, that is
- 36:06actually going to be an Olympic qualification event. So the man and the woman
- 36:10who win their respective races will qualify for the Olympic team that'll be competing for
- 36:15Team USA at the Paris Olympics this summer. So what is a big deal
- 36:20American athletes, you know, racing their bikes all over the world. Bike
- 36:22racing is pretty much it's a heavily europe based sports. So our best athletes
- 36:28are all in Europe. A ton of those athletes are going to be coming
- 36:30over here, coming to Charleston to try to qualify for the Olympic team.
- 36:34So that is going to be a big, big day. That's going to
- 36:37be Wednesday, May fifteenth, and there's going to be a lot of energy
- 36:40and a lot of excitement that day. Now, if I just want to
- 36:44come, maybe bring the family out to just to watch it. And I
- 36:46know you guys are working on the logistics right now. You're working with Tam
- 36:50and the folks in the Mayor's offices as well. But exactly if I just
- 36:53want to come and watch some of these events, I'm not a cyclist.
- 36:57I want to bring the family because this is a major, major deal.
- 37:00I would say it's a once in a lifetime deal, but it's actually going
- 37:02to be for five years in Charleston. How does that work? If I
- 37:06just want to come with you and watch stuff. If you want to come
- 37:08down with your family and get the biggest I would say initiate yourself into what
- 37:14world class bike racing looks like Friday night. So it's Friday, what is
- 37:17that Friday the seventeenth. There's the style of race called Criterions, And the
- 37:22only analogy I could give you, it's like Bristol, a Bristol, you
- 37:25know Bristol at the NASCAR NASCAR stop it. You know, it's a super
- 37:30tight course, it's like less than a mile, it's technical. You got
- 37:34the riders all bunched up together, and they're coming by again and again and
- 37:37again, like every ninety seconds. You're going to see them come by.
- 37:39The men's race and the women's race for each about an hour long. So
- 37:43if you've got kids, you know their attention, you don't have to worry
- 37:45about their attention span. That's where the crowd is going to be the thickest
- 37:49and the energy is going to be the most exciting from a spectator standpoint.
- 37:52So my recommendation would be if you just wanted to come to one event,
- 37:54that Friday night event is going to be something else. Now Sunday with the
- 37:59road race. It's a long day for the men. They're racing one hundred
- 38:01and thirty miles. It's a five hour race, but that Friday night race
- 38:06it's an hour and just the electricity that night is going to be incredible.
- 38:09So that would be my recommendation. When we have the other folks on,
- 38:12we'll probably have you on again as we get a little bit closer, because
- 38:14again we're talking about this in May, but I'm interested to see exactly what
- 38:20the course is going to look like and what areas of Charleston that it's going
- 38:22to And you're still learning Charleston. I understand that, but I mean what
- 38:25areas is it's because it's going to be pretty much all over the city,
- 38:29right, yes, So the criterion is going to be in downtown. It's
- 38:32just going to be right down by the river. They've got a course on
- 38:36an L shaped course in downtown where we really take in much more of the
- 38:39city is in the road race. So we're finalizing what the route's going to
- 38:43look like. But our expectation is the lap will be about twelve or thirteen
- 38:46miles. There's still some things that are unknown, but what is known is
- 38:50we are going to climb Bridge Road, which is going to be, you
- 38:52know, just outstanding. It's going to be a tough climb for the professional
- 38:55men. They're going to climb that ten times, ten times, ten times.
- 39:00Can you imagine that? A simple answer is no, I drove up
- 39:04at last night and I was tired. That's what I was gonna say.
- 39:07You're lucky if I drive up. Yeah, And then they're gonna come down
- 39:09Louden Heights ten times. Just super technical, tight, It's gonna it's gonna
- 39:14look amazing on TV to see what that looks like. The aggression with which
- 39:17these athletes will take that descent, it'll just make you want to cover your
- 39:21eyes because they are so aggressive. Just as you can win a race on
- 39:24a climb if you'ren outstanding athlete, you could also win a race on a
- 39:28descent if you're super aggressive. And that's gonna just make for some incredibly dramatic
- 39:32racing. It really reminds me of what you see in the Tour de France.
- 39:36But I've seen so far of Charleston. The roads here, especially like
- 39:38Louden Heights, it's tight, it's technical, it's a narrow You've got these
- 39:43amazing vistas of downtown we just we couldn't We couldn't have asked for more in
- 39:47terms of what the layout of the course is going to look like. It's
- 39:51gonna be amazing now. And Tim and I go way way back, And
- 39:53Tim and I are both economics guys. We're both numbers guys. And I
- 39:57am interested. Although I am interested in the athletic compet I'm also interested in
- 40:01butts and beds, and I'm also interested in restaurants and what economically this is
- 40:06going to mean to Charleston, because I know in doing some research what it
- 40:08meant to Knoxville in the seven years that you had it there. I mean,
- 40:12it's millions of dollars. Millions and millions and millions of dollars are going
- 40:15to be coming to Charleston over that five day period. Yeah, no,
- 40:17there's no doubt about it. It's exactly what you said before. It's the
- 40:21athletes, it's their teams, it's the coaching staffs, the mechanics. This
- 40:24is the first time typically when we host this race it's only the professionals.
- 40:29So we were talking about seven years at Charles seven years excuse me, in
- 40:32Knoxville, Greenville, Chattanooga. Formerly this was only the professionals racing. What
- 40:37we've done this year is we've added the U twenty three category and we've added
- 40:42the junior category. So this is going to be like a festival of road
- 40:45cycling. This is going to be the biggest turnout of athletes, family,
- 40:50they're entourages, the biggest we've ever had. So what that means for economic
- 40:53impact for Charleston, It's going to be the biggest economic impact we've ever had
- 40:57with this event. So it will be disruptive to the city. We're going
- 41:00to be shutting down roads. But you know, the feedback we have gotten
- 41:05from the community has been super positive. They're excited to see the racing,
- 41:07they're excited for the economic impact, and we're really grateful for the hospitality that
- 41:14we have gotten from the community. So I just want to say a big
- 41:15thank you to everybody in Charleston. Before we let you go, I didn't
- 41:17have a text here, and I knew this was going to be there.
- 41:20I know it was going to happen, a texted houses bike race going to
- 41:22affect school traffic. We're still a couple of months away and all that's going
- 41:27to be out on all the websites, in the paper, and so on
- 41:30and so forth. But the short answer is it's greatly going to impact.
- 41:35I know, most of the disruption on the roads is going to be on
- 41:37Saturday and so okay, Okay, so I think actually, I mean,
- 41:40we're going to get way ahead of that, but I think that the disruption
- 41:44during the school week is going to be pretty minimal. Okay. Where you're
- 41:46going to see it mostly the road races where you see a lot of the
- 41:50closures only on Saturday and Sunday. Okay, But now Saturday and Sunday,
- 41:53and again we're way in advance of this thing. That's why we wanted to
- 41:58have you on now. But we want you to know that for those particular
- 42:01dates May fourteenth through the nineteenth, that, especially when we have these road
- 42:06races going on, as you said, primarily on weekends, your travel is
- 42:10going to be impacted. You know, it's Saturday and Sunday, it will
- 42:15be you know, you might, you know, give yourself a little bit
- 42:16more time on Sunday to get to church. But you know, in terms
- 42:19of getting communicating out there is to how you know the ways in which the
- 42:24road closures will work. We'll get that information out there, but people will
- 42:29be able to get around. You know, we're not locking the sea down
- 42:30by any stretch of the imagination. Look, if you're bringing this much money
- 42:35and lock it down, well we won't be. You know, we're going
- 42:37to work to make it so that it's gonna work for everybody. But we
- 42:39we're counting down the days. We can't wait to be here. Where can
- 42:43people learn more about this? I mean about your organization. USA cycling dot
- 42:47org is where you can learn about us and the work that we're doing to
- 42:51try to grow bike racing on a grassroots level across the United States, about
- 42:53what we're doing with the Olympic team and everything in between. It's a big
- 42:58year for us with the Olympics. So we're excited. And this is a
- 43:00five year deal for Charleston. So as I'm sure you did in Knoxville in
- 43:04these other areas, you know you're gonna be learning as you go. I
- 43:06mean, you guys are pros at this. But there's gonna be little things,
- 43:08are gonna We're gonna say, there's gonna be little quirks, but you
- 43:12know I can say that, Yeah, no, now you've heard all those
- 43:14jokes. The natural There'll be a couple hiccups in the first year. But
- 43:17Tim and the folks here in the city are professional, and you know we've
- 43:21put a lot of these races on, so I'm hopeful that the hiccups won't
- 43:23be too big. All right, And again, we're gonna be talking a
- 43:25whole lot about this between now and the middle of May. Brendan Quirk is
- 43:30the CEO of USA Cycling and I appreciate you taking time at your schedule to

- 48:30then Rachelle Beatty, who is on the Morgantown end of things, are going
- 48:35to join us on the show on Friday. So today's crossover day at the
- 48:38Capitol. And again, Hoby'll have more than that coming up at ten oh
- 48:42six. Couple of quick notes here, and this is something I had not
- 48:45had a chance to talk about with the legislature, and it has to do
- 48:47with mugshots. The House has passed a bill that booking photos of criminal suspects
- 48:57would no longer be made public. Now. The vote was fifty four to
- 49:00forty six in favor of banning of banning mugshot photos to be released to the
- 49:07public and media. So so if allowed to stand, you would no longer,
- 49:14as best I understand, to see, television, radio, station,
- 49:16websites, whatever, putting arrest photos out there, and those popular websites like
- 49:22West Virginia mug Shots for example, those would go away. Now it's house
- 49:28built forty six to twenty one and Brad mclahenney as a story posted about it
- 49:31on the website. And I'm gonna say this, I you know, not
- 49:36just not to ride the fences. I'm accused of from time to time here.
- 49:38But I understand both sides of it. The media has a job to
- 49:45do and I completely understand that. But on the other hand, if people
- 49:52are arrested and later found innocent or those charges are dropped for one reason or
- 50:00another in the digital world that we live in, that picture is out there
- 50:07forever. And if you've ever known anybody that was in the hiring aspect of
- 50:14a business, generally speaking, the way it's done today, the first thing
- 50:20that potential employers do when they look at a new hire is to google their
- 50:25name. They check out their social media and they google their name. And
- 50:30if one of the first things that pops up is a booking photo, and
- 50:38then charges are later dropped for one reason or another, then then you got
- 50:46a problem. And again I completely understand both sides of this argument. I
- 50:52really do. The media has a job to do. But let's keep in
- 50:55mind that old adage. All everyone's in a sentental proven guilty, And when
- 51:02you go on these websites and you see somebody's picture, it doesn't necessarily mean
- 51:08that means it means they were accused of the crime, doesn't mean they were
- 51:12convicted. So there's an effort and it's kind of pitting some Republicans against Republicans.
- 51:17Of course, with the Republicans having such the super duper majority that they
- 51:21have, every bill is going to pit Republicans against Republicans. So we'll continue
- 51:25to follow that story. Close with this. If you're planning to go krogering
- 51:29anytime soon, you may be crossing a picket line. There is a contract
- 51:34dispute going on, and I was looking last night at a list of possible
- 51:37strike locations for local Kroger stores, and it's pretty much every Kroger in our
- 51:43listening area. If it happens, they all of the Krogers. I mean,
- 51:47as far as I know the Kroger locations in our area, pretty much
- 51:51all of them would be part of it. So you gotta go get that
- 51:55loaf of bread and that the gallon of milk. If it does, it
- 52:00worked out, you'll be crossing a picket line when you go krogery. Text
- 52:05says, my problem is the media doesn't put on the news that someone was
- 52:07found innocent like they do their arrest photo. Good point, good point,
- 52:12all right, gotta go. Coming up on the show tomorrow, Charleston City
