- 0:07SPEAKER_01: Baron, great to see you.
- 0:08SPEAKER_01: Great to see you.
- 0:09SPEAKER_01: Rainy out there today.
- 0:11SPEAKER_01: It is.
- 0:11SPEAKER_01: But looks like you walked through the raindrops in between them or something.
- 0:16SPEAKER_04: We have a crowd today, don't we?
- 0:17SPEAKER_01: We do have a crowd.
- 0:18SPEAKER_01: This is an ex this is the first for our podcast.
- 0:21SPEAKER_01: Um all three of these brothers have been individually on it with you and I, Baron, but um uh today we're gonna we're gonna do a group podcast.
- 0:29SPEAKER_01: So um, but before we do that, uh let's just first of all uh go around the room and have our brothers introduce themselves to the podcast, and then I'm gonna ask one of them, John, to lead us in prayer.
- 0:43SPEAKER_01: So Jack Hastings, Jack, John Maloney, John, and that who's your guy, Chris Derrick.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: There we go.
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: Uh thank you, all three of you brothers, for joining Baron and I.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: Uh John, would you be so kind to lead us in prayer?
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: In the name of the Father, Son, Holy Spirit, amen.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Father God, we're just so grateful for this time to come together in this wonderful podcast.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: And uh we just come, Holy Spirit, just be with us, lead us in our conversation here this evening.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: We're so grateful for all the blessings and for this beautiful church and for the great Bible study that has been going on here, Lord, and just help us to bring glory and honor to you.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: In Jesus' name we pray.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: Well, guys, uh, I we're we're so excited to have you guys here.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna give just a little brief background as to why we're doing a group podcast for the maybe newcomer that happens to stumble upon this podcast, uh, out of the, I don't know, eight or ten that maybe listen to it on a regular basis.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: Uh, so here's the background.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: Uh first of all, we're at St.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: Philip the Apostle Church in Statesville.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: Um, the pastor here is our beloved uh Father Bernard, and uh who's a very dynamic guy.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: And Father Bernard, uh as you guys probably all know, when he makes a suggestion, it it has the full force of, okay, let's uh let's make sure we don't let Father Bernard down.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: So the background here is uh I ran into Father Bernard last week, and uh he he was complimenting Baron, you and I on on the last podcast we did, and um he said to me, Hey, I have a suggestion or an idea for for your next podcast.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: And I said, Do tell.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: And uh he said, Why don't you pick three or four guys uh out of the Bible study that are going to be joining him in Greece uh on this uh on this this uh trip to trace the footsteps of Saint Paul, which is very timely because uh again, as you guys all know, we our Bible study for the last several months has been following Paul uh through the different letters that he's been writing.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: And uh I think it's fair to say that all of us are pretty big fans of St.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: Paul.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: So I'm going to start off with what I think is maybe a softball question, but um, first of all, uh just by show of hands, and then I'll I'll just say it out loud.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: But how many guys are going with their wives?
- 3:23unknown: Yes.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: Okay, so two of the three are are going with their wives.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: Um so I'm gonna start with you, Chris, first uh by asking what do you think your wives wife's expectation is for this trip?
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: Have you talked about it?
- 3:39SPEAKER_02: Oh yes, yes.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: Um actually, she's the one that she gets she's the one that got excited about it.
- 3:45SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 3:45SPEAKER_02: Um and I kind of, you know, when when Father Bernard was talking about it initially, I was like, Oh, I'd really like to go to that, but how am I gonna get Amy to go?
- 3:53SPEAKER_02: You know, and that said sometimes you just kind of go, all right, what if but yeah, she was the one that she listened to looked at me and said, Hey, we're gonna go.
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: It wasn't, hey, do you want?
- 4:04SPEAKER_02: It was hey, we're going to this thing.
- 4:06SPEAKER_02: So I was like, you know, and the you know, you had that micro, you know.
- 4:10SPEAKER_02: Um, but she I would love, well, I've given her a f a few books that we're gonna have to go through.
- 4:21SPEAKER_02: Um for the sheer fact, I don't want her to be I I really want her to enjoy the process.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: I mean, we're walking on such hollow grounds, you know.
- 4:29SPEAKER_02: This is this is really neat.
- 4:31SPEAKER_02: I've never I'm a rookie with any of these groups.
- 4:34SPEAKER_02: I'm not sure if you any of you guys have gone, but I this is my first time, so I don't really know what to anticipate, but I was really excited that Amy, my wife, was just over the moon about going.
- 4:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:47SPEAKER_02: So I mean, uh I was I didn't have to I didn't have to push too hard because she was the one that really wanted to do it.
- 4:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm not sure actually was Kim that way.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean we're very excited, looking forward to it, counting down the days, and uh I think just to um we've been studying all this stuff and to just be there in Philippi and walking around and um being experiencing with other friends that we know and Father Bernard especially.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: And um, we've both been working pretty hard this year doing a lot of different things, and we're just looking at this as a time to chill out and relax and have fun with friends, Father Bernard.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: To have Father Bernard's like undevoted attention for a week is just like you know, we're just like, wow, this would be awesome.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: Um, we we started a little thing um called uh the Lydia Fashion Institute in Awari, Nigeria, and Lydia, if you recall, was on the outskirts of Philippi.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: So for Kim and I, and I think Father Bernard and that little ministry that was started uh in Awari, Nigeria, which has become incredibly uh powerful little ministry there, to be standing there in Philippi wherever Lydia was hanging out at the time is going to be a special moment for us.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: Awesome, awesome.
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: Jack, what about you you?
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: What what kind of expectations do you have for this trip going in?
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: And and have you ever been on a kind of a trip like this before with a group tour of uh any of the uh I guess you would call this a pilgrimage, uh of any of the you know saint sites to where famous saints might have been?
- 6:32SPEAKER_03: I have not.
- 6:33SPEAKER_03: Um you know I've traveled the world and I've been to uh quite a few places uh quite a few places, but I I've never been on a pilgrimage to any holy site before.
- 6:44SPEAKER_03: Uh most of the places I go to are obscure and out of the way, and um but nevertheless, um I I'm very much looking forward to this uh because of my own personal journey, but but in our in our Bible study, as you know, the um the discussions that we get into concerning Saint Paul and his ministries and his and his his missions um to those different places, um it just has me wanting to know more.
- 7:17SPEAKER_03: I want to know more about Paul to humanize him.
- 7:20SPEAKER_03: We all know the power he has through his written word, but I I want to know more about Paul and what he experienced and and the different cultures that he experienced in these different places that are close together but all different.
- 7:34SPEAKER_03: Um and it helped me maybe understand more about uh what he was writing, why he was writing, and who he was writing to uh so I can get a better understanding of how it affects uh my faith and and uh and my growth going forward.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: What do you guys think if you can kind of look into the crystal ball, what do you think is going to be the most amazing part of your trip?
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: Knowing that you don't know exactly what you're walking into, but maybe what do you hope it is, or what what do you think?
- 8:12SPEAKER_02: I mean, is I think much like Jack was talking about having the culture go with the with the with the scripture.
- 8:19SPEAKER_02: I mean to walk it and see it and to kind of go, oh this is uh interesting.
- 8:26SPEAKER_02: Because you know, I don't I don't know how much more uh progressive those areas have been.
- 8:32SPEAKER_02: You know, historically, you know, let's face it, they they were very, very simple back in the day, but how much more progressive they've they've gotten, I don't know.
- 8:42SPEAKER_02: I'd be curious to see that because in my own mind I have a I have a certain idea of you know people walking around going from village to village, you know what I mean?
- 8:54SPEAKER_02: But but but to but to see the sights that they saw, you know, and then and then kind of go, you know, this is I don't know, just to kind of get in their own mindset of of what that culture was like around I I think that's gonna be I think that's really gonna help me almost like Jack's talking about, just put myself in a in a better mindset of you know where Paul was and why he wrote and potentially have a better understanding of what he did write and why he wrote it.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: By the way, I have in my the picture I have in my I'm not going on the trip, but I'm very envious of you guys.
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: Uh, but the picture I have of of of you three going on this trip is kind of you know the shepherd with the headdress and the staff and sandals on your feet.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: So please make sure you take those pictures when uh when you dress that way.
- 9:49SPEAKER_01: Um how uh how are you guys preparing for the trip?
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: Uh what kind are you are you are you doing, you know, are you reading anything uh in advance of this trip?
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: Are you uh yeah, tell tell me kind of what what you guys are doing individually to prepare yourself spiritually for this trip?
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm just trying to keep up with all the ministry work that we're already doing, Kim and I, but you know, and I'm just looking forward to it as a time to relax and calm down.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: But definitely the men's Bible study has been very helpful as we're going through Corinthians right now and everything, and um and yeah, uh just trying to keep up with what you're doing.
- 10:30SPEAKER_01: John, you you you don't have Paul in the trunk of your car, right?
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: He's he's sitting next to you.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: And that's another thing with Father Bernard being a missionary of St.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: Paul, he's of that order of priests.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: I just think it's so special to be following the footsteps of St.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: Paul with a priest who is a missionary for Saint who loves St.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: Paul, that order of priests.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: So I'm just really looking forward to that that whole experience.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: I have no idea what it's gonna be like, but I have faith and trust in God and the Holy Spirit that it's gonna be a wonderful time listening to Father Bernard's laugh all through these different places.
- 11:11SPEAKER_02: A fabulous book that's you know basically the companion guide to the Bible, you know, and they spend so much time talking about Paul.
- 11:20SPEAKER_02: And and it's kind of neat.
- 11:22SPEAKER_02: This just the photos that kind of go with it, you know, they always have these these you know obscure photos of here's all the olive trees, here's it here's you know, here's one of the one of the mountains that you know, here's the Sea of Galilee, you know, and it's it's it's really neat to it's gonna be really neat to see that that atmosphere, but yeah, there's you know, Paul went for the mission that he did.
- 11:47SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's just he wasn't on vacation.
- 11:50SPEAKER_02: Like, we're gonna kind of be on, you know, it's this isn't tour 206, you know.
- 11:53SPEAKER_02: This is this was his missionary aspect.
- 11:56SPEAKER_02: This is his mission, it was what he did.
- 11:59SPEAKER_02: And this the see the places that we're gonna travel to are gonna be, you know, granted I know we're gonna be by car and bus and you know, even planes and stuff like that.
- 12:10SPEAKER_02: But there again, yeah, remember, he walked it.
- 12:12SPEAKER_02: You know, it's just that's the biggest thing.
- 12:14SPEAKER_02: Well, we're talking about, yes, that's true.
- 12:17SPEAKER_02: Um, but but we have motors that take us where we need to go.
- 12:21SPEAKER_02: And the air conditioning too.
- 12:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:24SPEAKER_02: So but the companion guide is great for me.
- 12:26SPEAKER_02: Um, I think it's gonna help me get myself into that into that mindset.
- 12:32SPEAKER_03: I I've I've been reading everything I can find about Paul and about these places.
- 12:39SPEAKER_03: Like I said, I want this is uh this isn't a uh a sightseeing trip for me, and it's not a uh you know, I must go for work type of thing either.
- 12:50SPEAKER_03: Um this is uh my wife's not going because she has health issues that prevent her from walking distances understood.
- 12:58SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 12:59SPEAKER_03: But when this first was announced, she looked at me kind of like and she says, You're going.
- 13:06SPEAKER_03: I said, Well, what about you?
- 13:07SPEAKER_03: She says, I can't, but you're going.
- 13:09SPEAKER_03: And I have an agenda of items that I'm I need to make sure that I accomplish while I'm there.
- 13:15SPEAKER_03: But this is this is for my faith.
- 13:17SPEAKER_03: I want to know not only do I want to know more about Paul and who Paul was, but I want to know about the challenges that he's faced in trying to bring Christianity into a world where it was totally foreign and totally new, you know, because I see my calling, just like all of you brothers, is to spread this word to others.
- 13:42SPEAKER_03: You know, so if the f if I can understand uh pretty much the challenges that Paul faced in his time, it can help better prepare me for the challenges I will face in my time.
- 13:53SPEAKER_03: And um and this is the perfect opportunity to do it.
- 13:55SPEAKER_03: And like I said, with Father Bernard, who you know uh this this the most holy spiritual uh guide you can ask for uh to come with you for him to be there, um and and as well as uh brothers uh from the Bible study that are going and other people that that are in this group, it to me it's just a perfect opportunity to achieve that goal.
- 14:23SPEAKER_04: Jack, you missed something I thought you know was interesting.
- 14:25SPEAKER_04: You talked about how you know how unique it is to kind of view this through the eyes of Paul and introducing Christianity to a world that doesn't know what Christianity is.
- 14:35SPEAKER_04: Are we that far from that now?
- 14:37SPEAKER_04: No, you know, I mean we're having to we're having to reintroduce Christianity in a lot of sense of a way.
- 14:43SPEAKER_04: And I think that's uh interesting point, right?
- 14:45SPEAKER_04: And um, and it's it's you know, two thousand years later, and here we are walking through the same world uh with all of its modern conveniences and ways to communicate and this and that.
- 14:56SPEAKER_04: And and you could chronicle that same thing with us and how we how we spread in Christianity.
- 15:02SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 15:02SPEAKER_03: You know, and we tend to look at Paul as like uh one of John Maloney's favorite favorite descriptions is this ninja black belt uh holy man from God, you know, who was out there slaying and taking no prisoners doing a work.
- 15:16SPEAKER_03: And that's not what it was like at all, and that's not who he was at all.
- 15:21SPEAKER_03: At all.
- 15:22SPEAKER_03: I mean, nobody liked Paul.
- 15:24SPEAKER_03: No one.
- 15:26SPEAKER_03: You know, and he's it's and that's what I like about what that we're on in uh Corinthians chapter 10, 11, and 12.
- 15:32SPEAKER_03: Because it brings into to me, like any other writings, it lets you know more about Paul and who he was like and and his limitations and and what he was up against.
- 15:43SPEAKER_03: You know, nobody considered him a leader.
- 15:45SPEAKER_03: You know, here's a guy that's four foot six, four foot six, balding, he's got a unibrow, hunched over, and bow-legged.
- 15:55SPEAKER_03: And these, you know, this is the leader of the of this Christian faith over here.
- 16:01SPEAKER_03: You know, the Romans looked at him as a nuisance, the Greeks looked at him as uh as a fool.
- 16:06SPEAKER_03: Uh the Jews looked at him as a as a threat, and fellow Christians looked at him without respect.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: And yet, and yet his letters to the churches that he you know he's planting are I mean, they're still obviously as powerful today as they were 2,000 years ago.
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: I mean it's incredible.
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: He's still guiding us today.
- 16:32SPEAKER_01: This the saint is still guiding us as we struggle with this world, which I think to your point, Baron, uh is not all that dissimilar, probably, to the chaos that that world was.
- 16:46SPEAKER_04: I'm still trying to get a message across.
- 16:47SPEAKER_04: It's not easy to get across.
- 16:49SPEAKER_04: And there's a there's a you know, it's a lot of different people with a lot of different uh uh uh agendas and thoughts about you know whether they will listen to you or they want to shape that message to to fit their needs.
- 17:00SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 17:01SPEAKER_04: Things like that.
- 17:01SPEAKER_04: It's not a lot different.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: So I I I don't have in front of me the uh itinerary, and I doubt that you guys do, um, but maybe you uh maybe you guys have looked it over enough to know the different places you're gonna be visiting.
- 17:17SPEAKER_01: John, you said that you're really looking forward to being in Philippi because of Lydia, so I I understand that.
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: Jack, is there a specific place on the on the itinerary that you're really looking forward to seeing or being in?
- 17:34SPEAKER_03: Not not so much a specific place.
- 17:37SPEAKER_03: I want to see, I want to look at all the different places and the contrast between them, you know, because you know, uh Thessalonica, uh Thessalonica and Athens and Corinth were all rich, you know, cultured uh places, Philippi not so much, but what was the culture between the different and the differences between them?
- 17:57SPEAKER_03: Because um that to me was part of uh the challenge Paul had, you know, because he he he goes in and he meets you where you where you are and he learns more about who you are before he even speaks.
- 18:11SPEAKER_03: So what did he learn about the people from these different places and how was it what was that contrast and how did that come convey what he was saying in his letters?
- 18:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you know, I like I said, I don't have I'm I'm not a specific thing, I'm going for the whole package.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: Chris, what about you and Amy?
- 18:30SPEAKER_01: Is there a particular place on that itinerary that you guys are really looking forward to seeing?
- 18:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Amy has studied this thing immensely already, which I I really I'm so happy for because matter of fact, at our little meeting that we had last night, Amy was the one that was telling, hey, you need to get on this, get on that.
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: She was kind of she can she's been on this website a hundred times, man.
- 18:50SPEAKER_02: And and so she's I love seeing the excitement that she's got for this.
- 18:54SPEAKER_02: Um, but for me, I I'm just excited that she's excited.
- 18:59SPEAKER_02: I will say this, and I'm not gonna lie, I haven't really haven't looked at the itinerary that much.
- 19:03SPEAKER_02: But but I know I hardly ever do.
- 19:06SPEAKER_02: Because when I like to go to places, I like to absorb it when I'm there instead of studying before I go.
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: Plus, you're a married guy, so the like you're gonna look at it.
- 19:20SPEAKER_02: Look at the lawnmower and seats over in my corner, you know.
- 19:23SPEAKER_02: Look at the hands, and I'm like, I I okay, but you know, but no, I just I'm I'm really excited that she's excited.
- 19:30SPEAKER_02: But so I say she's gonna be the tour guide, she's gonna be the sub tour guide of this whole thing, too, to a certain extent.
- 19:38SPEAKER_02: So before we ever go.
- 19:40SPEAKER_02: But you know, thought thinking about you know, Father Bernard's gonna be our you know, our our our tour guide, probably the best tour guide we can have.
- 19:49SPEAKER_02: I I'm kind of anxious to see what's gonna happen because we do have a tour guide that we are using, and um it's gonna be funny to see some of the maybe some of the historical differences between you know Father Bernard and you know and uh and our our guides that we do have.
- 20:08SPEAKER_01: But I think that was maybe his meeting today, you know, in DC.
- 20:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, was I'm guessing, right?
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: Is maybe to kind of figure out, you know, who's gonna lead, who's gonna follow, when do I jump in, that kind of thing.
- 20:23SPEAKER_02: So I hope Father Bernard just jumps in all the time.
- 20:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:26SPEAKER_02: Now Jack and I are knights of the altar.
- 20:28SPEAKER_02: Uh it's just a mystery that we have within St.
- 20:32SPEAKER_02: Philip's here, and um, we are taking our cassocks and surplus uh and so he's gonna do mass every day.
- 20:39SPEAKER_02: And so Jack and I are I'm excited.
- 20:42SPEAKER_02: I I know Jack is too.
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: I I'm I'm gonna speak for Jack, but I know he and I are just over the moon that we get to help with our daily mass in the corner.
- 20:54SPEAKER_02: All these places, I mean, how cool is this?
- 20:56SPEAKER_02: I mean, this is that to me, that's just that's extra indulgence.
- 21:01SPEAKER_02: That's just it makes you that just makes it better, you know.
- 21:04SPEAKER_02: It's like um, you know being in front of the roller coaster, you know, that first car all the time.
- 21:10SPEAKER_02: Every time you go to the music park, you know, and it's that's that's what I'm excited about.
- 21:15SPEAKER_01: Well, guys, I'll tell you what, uh we're excited for you for sure.
- 21:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: And uh uh we're gonna hopefully invite you guys back.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: Hopefully you'll accept it after the trip.
- 21:27SPEAKER_01: Um, really hoping Father Bernard, and I think he will, will join us in that group podcast.
- 21:33SPEAKER_01: Uh and can't wait to hear what you and your wives that are going uh have thought of it, and certainly what Father Bernard thinks or thought of you know the whole experience.
- 21:43SPEAKER_01: And uh and I just you know, we'll be praying for you guys.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: We'll be uh keeping you in our thoughts and prayers as as we're back here holding down the fort.
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: And you guys I I didn't fail to ask, and I'm just curious.
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: Have any of you guys been to Greece before?
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: I have, yeah.
- 22:01SPEAKER_00: You have?
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: Yes, Athens or Ephesus, over which isn't technically Greece, but another famous holy site.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: Okay, so this is you're gonna be your second time to Greece?
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: Okay, great, great.
- 22:17SPEAKER_01: So you have a little bit of a flavor of what Greece is, where these guys don't.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, don't don't ruin it for them.
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: Don't don't keep them in suspense.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: Don't tell them what how good the Greek food is.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: You know, let them find out on their own.
- 22:30SPEAKER_03: So if you've lived in Europe, you can you're exposed to all that.
- 22:36SPEAKER_03: And I I did I did have a brief airline stopover on the way to Saudi Arabia in Greece.
