- 0:00Speaker 1: An attack on the Claiborne homestead leaves Pleasant Valley unsettled,
- 0:04Speaker 1: and Marshal Matt Dillon and Chester ride out to investigate
- 0:08Speaker 1: the burned ranch. It is Gunsmoke, Alarm at Pleasant Valley,
- 0:13Speaker 1: Episode 178, originally broadcast by CBS on September 10, 1955.
- 0:21Speaker 1: William Conrad stars as Dillon, with Parley Bear as Chester.
- 0:27Speaker 1: John Dunkel wrote the script, and Norman MacDonald produced and directed.
- 0:32Speaker 1: As Sam Fraser considers leaving the territory, the troubles facing
- 0:37Speaker 1: the settlers draw Dillon and Chester deeper into Pleasant Valley.
- 0:41Speaker 1: The date also marked Gunsmoke's television premiere. We now take
- 0:46Speaker 1: you back to the original broadcast.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Around Dodge City and in the Territory on West, there's
- 1:03Speaker 2: just one way to handle the killers and the spoilers,
- 1:07Speaker 2: and that's with a U.S. Marshal and the smell of Gunsmoke.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Gunsmoke Gunsmoke, starring William Conrad. The transcribed story of the
- 1:33Speaker 2: violence that moved west with young America. And the story
- 1:37Speaker 2: of a man who moved with it.
- 1:39Speaker 3: I'm that man. Matt Dillon, United States Marshal. The first
- 1:43Speaker 3: man they look for and the last they want to meet.
- 1:47Speaker 3: It's a chancy job. And it makes a man watchful.
- 1:51Speaker 4: And a little lonely.
- 1:56Speaker 5: Oh, me. How was that for it, Chester?
- 2:23Speaker 6: Oh, I don't know.
- 2:24Speaker 7: I just wanted to make a noise, I guess. It's
- 2:27Speaker 7: so bling quiet out here on the prairie.
- 2:29Speaker 8: You've been mighty quiet yourself.
- 2:32Speaker 7: I guess I run plumb out of conversation back a
- 2:34Speaker 7: couple hours ago. It ain't I'm unsociable, Mr.
- 2:38Speaker 9: Jones.
- 2:38Speaker 8: Yeah, I know, Chester. It's been a long ride. Yeah,
- 2:42Speaker 8: but we'll be in Dodge by dark.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Yes, sir.
- 2:45Speaker 7: This ain't time to go to bed.
- 2:48Speaker 8: You didn't have anything better to do, did you?
- 2:50Speaker 6: I guess not.
- 2:51Speaker 7: Game of checkers with Doc, maybe. Oh, that man plays
- 2:54Speaker 7: the doggonest, craziest game of checkers.
- 2:57Speaker 6: Hey, Chester.
- 2:59Speaker 8: Over there.
- 3:00Speaker 4: What?
- 3:02Speaker 7: Well, that's smoke, Mr.
- 3:02Speaker 6: Dillon.
- 3:03Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 3:04Speaker 7: Must be a.
- 3:04Speaker 6: Grass fire, huh?
- 3:06Speaker 8: Well, when smoke got black.
- 3:08Speaker 7: Oh, what is it then?
- 3:10Speaker 8: Isn't there a ranch over in that direction?
- 3:13Speaker 7: Well, now, yes, there is.
- 3:14Speaker 6: Not far, neither.
- 3:16Speaker 7: A fellow named Claiborne, as I remember. Come here from
- 3:20Speaker 7: Indiana about four years ago. Him and his wife did.
- 3:23Speaker 7: Awful nice fellow.
- 3:24Speaker 9: Come on, Chester.
- 3:24Speaker 7: Planted corn the first year, but it didn't turn out
- 3:26Speaker 7: very well.
- 3:27Speaker 8: Come on, Chester. We better take a look.
- 3:53Speaker 7: Oh, my gracious, Mr.
- 3:55Speaker 10: Jones.
- 3:55Speaker 7: The house, barn, everything.
- 4:00Speaker 9: Yeah, there's not much left, is there?
- 4:02Speaker 7: What do you suppose could have happened?
- 4:04Speaker 8: Yeah, there's one thing for sure. It wasn't an accident.
- 4:08Speaker 10: Hmm?
- 4:08Speaker 8: Look at the tracks, horses, all milling around.
- 4:12Speaker 9: I'm sure a lot of them.
- 4:15Speaker 7: Well, I don't understand either.
- 4:16Speaker 6: Where is Mr.
- 4:17Speaker 8: Claiborne?
- 4:18Speaker 7: Here's his house not hardly burnt to the ground yet.
- 4:21Speaker 8: Take a look over there, Chester.
- 4:24Speaker 9: Mr.
- 4:24Speaker 6: Dillon.
- 4:24Speaker 9: Come on.
- 4:34Speaker 6: Oh, no.
- 4:37Speaker 9: Yeah, he should have stayed in Indiana. And his wife, too. And....
- 4:45Speaker 7: I didn't even know they had a little Mr.
- 4:47Speaker 9: Dillon.
- 4:51Speaker 7: It's like they were... Time for covering that little creek
- 4:55Speaker 7: bed there.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Well, we can only do one thing for them now.
- 5:00Speaker 8: Maybe there's a shovel left back there.
- 5:03Speaker 9: Mr.
- 5:03Speaker 7: Dillon, who could have did a thing like that?
- 5:05Speaker 8: That's plain enough, isn't it?
- 5:07Speaker 7: Yes, but I didn't hear no Indian trouble right now.
- 5:09Speaker 8: I didn't either.
- 5:13Speaker 4: Mr.
- 5:13Speaker 7: Jones?
- 5:14Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 5:16Speaker 7: If them Indians were just here not very long ago,
- 5:21Speaker 7: they couldn't have gone far.
- 5:23Speaker 8: That's right, Chester, they couldn't.
- 5:26Speaker 3: All right, come on, let's look to that shovel.
- 5:34Speaker 9: Oh, Mr. Claiborne. Look out there, Mr. Dillon. What?
- 5:39Speaker 7: Planted corn again, and it's doing.
- 5:40Speaker 9: Real well, too. Yeah.
- 5:45Speaker 8: Now, wait a minute, Chester. Listen.
- 5:48Speaker 9: Horses. A lot of them. Yeah.
- 5:50Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:51Speaker 7: You think it could be them Indians coming back?
- 5:53Speaker 8: That could be.
- 5:54Speaker 3: Get the rifles and we'll try a run for the
- 5:56Speaker 3: creek that day.
- 5:59Speaker 7: Too late, Mr.
- 5:59Speaker 9: Dillon.
- 6:00Speaker 7: They're coming over the rise. Well, Mr. Dillon, it ain't Indians.
- 6:04Speaker 8: It's the Bluecoats.
- 6:06Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 6:07Speaker 7: The patrol, a whole company of them.
- 6:09Speaker 6: Oh, my.
- 6:09Speaker 7: Ain't they a welcome sight?
- 6:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:11Speaker 8: Come on. Let's go meet them.
- 6:39Speaker 6: What are you doing out here, Marshal?
- 6:40Speaker 8: We were riding in from Pawnee and we saw the smoke, Lieutenant.
- 6:44Speaker 9: We were a little too late.
- 6:46Speaker 8: Ah, so I see.
- 6:47Speaker 4: Where are they?
- 6:48Speaker 9: Over there. All three of them.
- 6:52Speaker 8: They're pretty close on their trail now.
- 6:53Speaker 6: Maybe we can get them before they find another ranch.
- 6:55Speaker 8: Well, from the prints, I figured them for Kyle. But
- 6:58Speaker 8: I didn't know there was any trouble.
- 7:00Speaker 9: There isn't.
- 7:00Speaker 8: For the tribe, these are just renegades. Not more than
- 7:03Speaker 8: eight or ten of them. That all fired up and
- 7:05Speaker 8: jumped the agency.
- 7:06Speaker 7: Fired up with cheap whiskey.
- 7:08Speaker 4: Maybe.
- 7:09Speaker 6: But we can't be more than about half an hour
- 7:10Speaker 6: behind them now.
- 7:11Speaker 8: With luck, we'll get.
- 7:12Speaker 9: Them before nightfall.
- 7:13Speaker 7: I sure hope so.
- 7:15Speaker 8: Marshal, we'll take over here for you. The horses need
- 7:17Speaker 8: a few minutes rest.
- 7:18Speaker 6: Then we'll go on.
- 7:19Speaker 8: All right, Lieutenant. We'll head on into Dodge.
- 7:21Speaker 6: Keep your eyes open, Marshal, on the way.
- 7:23Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, we will.
- 7:24Speaker 9: All right.
- 7:41Speaker 6: You know, Mr.
- 7:42Speaker 7: Dillon, it's a cussed, crying shame. Them Indians can be
- 7:45Speaker 7: as peaceful as anything, and then some ornery white man
- 7:48Speaker 7: comes along and sells them some of that red eye,
- 7:50Speaker 7: and they just go hog crazy.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Chester, an Indian's no different from anybody else with too
- 7:55Speaker 3: much to drink. Now, the problem's deeper than that.
- 7:59Speaker 9: What do you mean?
- 8:01Speaker 8: Well, the Indians are lost a lot. They're a conquered people.
- 8:06Speaker 3: That doesn't sit well with any man, Chester.
- 8:10Speaker 8: There are times when it makes him mad.
- 8:14Speaker 7: Yes, sir, that's so. I guess maybe you can't blame
- 8:18Speaker 7: him entirely.
- 8:19Speaker 8: Not entirely.
- 8:23Speaker 7: Well, see now.
- 8:25Speaker 8: That's a pretty little valley.
- 8:27Speaker 7: Hey, look, there's somebody down there.
- 8:28Speaker 8: Yeah, looks like settlers.
- 8:33Speaker 7: They do indeed with that Conestoga wagon. They build them
- 8:37Speaker 7: a sod hut, too. Well, looks like we got neighbors
- 8:41Speaker 7: we didn't know we had, Mr.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Dillon.
- 8:42Speaker 8: Or maybe we're losing them before we get to know them.
- 8:45Speaker 7: Hmm?
- 8:45Speaker 8: They seem to be packing the wagon.
- 8:48Speaker 7: Maybe they heard about the Indians.
- 8:50Speaker 9: That's likely.
- 8:50Speaker 8: Now, come on. We'll ride down and say hello.
- 9:06Speaker 4: Afternoon.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Howdy.
- 9:10Speaker 8: I'm Matt Dillon, U.S. Marshal out of Dodge. This is
- 9:13Speaker 8: Chester Proudfoot.
- 9:15Speaker 6: I'm Sam Fraser. This is my ma.
- 9:17Speaker 9: Sam.
- 9:17Speaker 8: This is my wife, Alice.
- 9:19Speaker 7: Hello.
- 9:20Speaker 4: How do you do?
- 9:20Speaker 6: This is Tad, my kid brother.
- 9:22Speaker 7: Pleased to meet you.
- 9:22Speaker 9: Hello.
- 9:23Speaker 6: We're headed for Dodge ourselves.
- 9:25Speaker 8: Looks like you got settled here.
- 9:27Speaker 6: Well, we ain't staying, Marshal. We're going on west.
- 9:30Speaker 7: Chasing rainbows, Marshal.
- 9:32Speaker 6: Farm folks like us.
- 9:33Speaker 9: Now, Ma.
- 9:34Speaker 10: Don't you now, Ma, me, Sam Fraser.
- 9:37Speaker 7: If your pa was still.
- 9:38Speaker 6: Alive, he wouldn't be leaving. Well, he ain't.
- 9:40Speaker 11: And it's up to me to do the deciding now.
- 9:42Speaker 11: If you'll excuse me, Marshal, I'll get back to loading up.
- 9:47Speaker 8: Justin, I can give you a hand.
- 9:48Speaker 7: No, thanks.
- 9:49Speaker 6: Tad and me will manage.
- 9:54Speaker 7: That's a real nice sod hut, Miss Frazier. It's kind
- 9:56Speaker 7: of too bad to go off and leave it.
- 9:58Speaker 6: My husband built it.
- 10:00Speaker 10: Not him.
- 10:00Speaker 6: Now, Ma, stand help.
- 10:03Speaker 10: Marshal, what do you think of a son that goes
- 10:05Speaker 10: against his father's wishes and him not hardly cold in
- 10:08Speaker 10: his grave?
- 10:08Speaker 6: Ma, please. Three days now, Marshal.
- 10:12Speaker 10: He's buried right over there under that cottonwood.
- 10:15Speaker 9: I'm sorry, ma'am.
- 10:17Speaker 6: He hadn't been here more than a week.
- 10:19Speaker 10: Come all the way from Ohio. Looking for a spot
- 10:22Speaker 10: of good ground to till. Looking for a home, Marshal.
- 10:26Speaker 7: And he found it here. It sure is a pretty
- 10:29Speaker 7: little place. Samuel called it Pleasant Valley.
- 10:34Speaker 10: Said he'd be grateful to settle here.
- 10:35Speaker 7: And spend his days. Only the Lord didn't leave him
- 10:39Speaker 7: any days.
- 10:41Speaker 10: Denied him like Moses come to the promised land.
- 10:45Speaker 8: It would make a nice homestead for you folks.
- 10:47Speaker 6: It would? But some folks has ideas. Oh, my layoff.
- 10:52Speaker 9: Mr.
- 10:52Speaker 8: Fraser.
- 10:53Speaker 5: What?
- 10:56Speaker 8: Look, I know it's none of my business, but.
- 11:01Speaker 3: Is there some reason why you want to give up
- 11:03Speaker 3: this land and go on?
- 11:04Speaker 6: Reason enough.
- 11:06Speaker 8: It's because of me, Marshal.
- 11:07Speaker 7: Now, Alice, you ain't to blame.
- 11:08Speaker 6: Yes, I am.
- 11:10Speaker 8: It's because Sam is worried about me, Marshal.
- 11:13Speaker 10: No Indians would scare him off if it was just
- 11:15Speaker 10: these folks, but it's me he's scared for.
- 11:17Speaker 9: Me and.
- 11:20Speaker 6: And the one coming. And what better reason?
- 11:22Speaker 11: You think I want my wife and my child living
- 11:24Speaker 11: in danger of murdering savages?
- 11:26Speaker 8: Now, Mr. Fraser, there's just a bunch of renegades. The
- 11:29Speaker 8: cavalry will get them soon, and the danger will be over.
- 11:32Speaker 11: Who's to say what they'll do before the cavalry gets them?
- 11:35Speaker 6: No, Marshal, my family's going to grow up in a
- 11:37Speaker 6: safe place.
- 11:38Speaker 10: My ma born me in the middle of the Ohio woods,
- 11:41Speaker 10: thick with Indians as fleas on a hound. We was
- 11:44Speaker 10: made us Turner stuff in them days.
- 11:46Speaker 6: Maybe, but my wife ain't going to live like that. Now,
- 11:50Speaker 6: come on, Ted. Hand that up. We're losing time.
- 11:55Speaker 8: You going on west?
- 11:56Speaker 10: Aye, to California, he says. Might even look for gold
- 12:01Speaker 10: instead of farming, he says.
- 12:02Speaker 4: Oh, my.
- 12:04Speaker 7: I reckon most of that gold out there is already clean.
- 12:07Speaker 7: Twenty years or more. Of course, you might have luck.
- 12:09Speaker 6: We can always find a piece of land.
- 12:11Speaker 8: Yeah, maybe you can, but nothing better than this.
- 12:14Speaker 6: Nothing half as good. This dirt's richer than molasses in
- 12:18Speaker 6: the cook pot. If it was me, I.
- 12:20Speaker 8: Well, it ain't. Now, hoist.
- 12:23Speaker 6: If I was just a few years old.
- 12:24Speaker 10: I said hoist.
- 12:32Speaker 7: You see how it is, Marshal.
- 12:34Speaker 9: Yes.
- 12:36Speaker 3: Maybe he's right. California might work out fine. Only it's
- 12:40Speaker 3: a long way. With Miss Fraser expecting, it's going to be...
- 12:46Speaker 3: Kind of a hard trip.
- 12:47Speaker 11: I know all that, Marshal. We'll stay in Dodge till
- 12:49Speaker 11: the baby's born. It won't be long now, and then
- 12:51Speaker 11: we'll go on.
- 12:52Speaker 8: I just want to say one thing, Mr.
- 12:54Speaker 9: Fraser, as a lawman in this territory.
- 12:57Speaker 3: We have some troubles now and then, sure, but it's
- 13:01Speaker 3: not as bad as you think.
- 13:03Speaker 8: And in a few years, it'll be as safe.
- 13:05Speaker 3: Here as it is in, well, Ohio right now, or California.
- 13:11Speaker 3: And it's going to be a prosperous country.
- 13:12Speaker 6: My mind's made up, Marshal.
- 13:15Speaker 8: Well, all right.
- 13:17Speaker 3: We better help you get loaded, then, and see you
- 13:19Speaker 3: safe in the Dodge. The worst place to be right
- 13:21Speaker 3: now is out on the open prairie.
- 13:23Speaker 5: All right, that's it. Now, one more shot. Good.
- 13:44Speaker 6: That should ride easy.
- 13:46Speaker 4: Well, that's the last.
- 13:49Speaker 6: All right, then. We're all ready. Might as well get started.
- 13:54Speaker 6: It's getting late. You got them all hitched, Ted? They're ready.
- 14:02Speaker 6: Where's Ma? She's over by the cottonwood.
- 14:05Speaker 4: Oh.
- 14:06Speaker 6: Crying, I suppose, to shame me.
- 14:08Speaker 10: Sam.
- 14:09Speaker 6: Well, tears don't.
- 14:11Speaker 4: Do no good.
- 14:12Speaker 7: She ain't crying.
- 14:14Speaker 6: She's just standing, staring. I tried to get her to
- 14:17Speaker 6: come away, but she wouldn't.
- 14:19Speaker 8: Marshal, maybe if you were to talk to her. You know,
- 14:24Speaker 8: a stranger.
- 14:25Speaker 9: All right. Well, sure, ma'am. Uh, Miss Fraser.
- 14:44Speaker 7: He's there, Marshal.
- 14:46Speaker 6: Right there.
- 14:47Speaker 7: We fixed up a cross.
- 14:50Speaker 4: Yes, ma'am.
- 14:51Speaker 7: Maybe if you was to pass by this way again,
- 14:54Speaker 7: you'd just take a look.
- 14:57Speaker 9: See the marker still standing? Why, sure I.
- 15:01Speaker 6: Will, ma'am.
- 15:01Speaker 7: 25 years, Marshal. And all I ever asked was to
- 15:05Speaker 7: lie there beside him. A lonely place.
- 15:11Speaker 9: Mm-hmm. But it's no lonelier than any other, Miss Fraser.
- 15:17Speaker 3: Why, in the springtime, this whole meadow's covered with a
- 15:25Speaker 3: blanket of sunflowers.
- 15:28Speaker 9: Pretty as you ever saw.
- 15:31Speaker 7: Thank you, Marshal. I can go now.
- 15:39Speaker 9: Come on. Ma, I'm sorry.
- 15:47Speaker 6: No need, boy. We all do what we have to do.
- 15:49Speaker 7: You're no different. Just help me up.
- 15:53Speaker 3: Oh, here, Ma.
- 15:55Speaker 5: All right.
- 15:56Speaker 10: Now let's get this girl into town.
- 15:58Speaker 7: Her time's almost come.
- 16:00Speaker 6: Okay, Ma.
- 16:00Speaker 9: Hey!
- 16:02Speaker 8: All right, come on, Chester.
- 16:05Speaker 7: Yes, ma'am.
- 16:15Speaker 8: I want you to ride the point. Keep a good
- 16:18Speaker 8: watch ahead and to the north, huh?
- 16:19Speaker 7: All right, sir.
- 16:20Speaker 3: I'll cut up to the top of that hill and
- 16:22Speaker 3: take a look, and then I'll ride south flank, cover
- 16:24Speaker 3: that side and behind.
- 16:25Speaker 9: Well, Mr.
- 16:26Speaker 7: Dillon, it sure does.
- 16:27Speaker 6: Seem a shame.
- 16:27Speaker 10: Wait a minute, Chester.
- 16:29Speaker 7: Oh, my gracious, coming over the hill?
- 16:31Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 16:32Speaker 6: Them ain't blue coats.
- 16:34Speaker 8: No, they're not, Chester.
- 16:37Speaker 9: Thank you.
- 17:02Speaker 4: Frazier!
- 17:04Speaker 6: Frazier, turn around!
- 17:05Speaker 1: Go back!
- 17:06Speaker 9: What?
- 17:06Speaker 8: Look up there!
- 17:08Speaker 2: Get back to the.
- 17:15Speaker 9: Hut!
- 17:15Speaker 8: Use your rifle, Chester. It was too far to hit him.
- 17:18Speaker 8: It'll let him know they got a fight.
- 17:20Speaker 9: Yes, sir.
- 17:26Speaker 6: Now they've turned off. I thought they would. All right,
- 17:28Speaker 6: let's get back to the Frazier's. Come on.
- 17:41Speaker 8: All right, hurry it up. Let's get those women into
- 17:43Speaker 8: the hut.
- 17:43Speaker 6: We're trying, Marshal, but Alice got choked up some with
- 17:46Speaker 6: us going so fast.
- 17:46Speaker 8: Well, we'll carry her.
- 17:47Speaker 6: Come on.
- 17:48Speaker 8: You all right, Marshal? Sure you will, ma'am.
- 17:50Speaker 9: Hang on now.
- 17:54Speaker 8: There we go.
- 17:57Speaker 7: Over here. Right here, Marshal.
- 18:03Speaker 6: Put her down gently.
- 18:04Speaker 8: Yes, ma'am.
- 18:08Speaker 6: Alice.
- 18:09Speaker 8: Now, Sam, don't you worry.
- 18:12Speaker 1: I'll be all right.
- 18:13Speaker 4: You go on.
- 18:14Speaker 8: Do what needs to be done.
- 18:17Speaker 10: I'll be all right.
- 18:18Speaker 6: But, Alice... Go on, boy.
- 18:20Speaker 9: Come on, Sam.
- 18:28Speaker 8: You got a rifle, Sam?
- 18:30Speaker 6: Yeah. Yeah, a sharps in the wagon.
- 18:31Speaker 8: Well, that'll give us three.
- 18:33Speaker 6: I ain't got one, Marshal, but I can load for you.
- 18:35Speaker 8: All right, son. There'll be plenty to do.
- 18:37Speaker 7: They're still up there, Mr.
- 18:38Speaker 10: Dillon.
- 18:39Speaker 7: Having a powwow, it looks like.
- 18:41Speaker 6: You figure they'll rush us, Marshal?
- 18:42Speaker 9: No.
- 18:43Speaker 8: They know we got rifles. There are only eight or
- 18:46Speaker 8: nine of them, and the ground's too open.
- 18:47Speaker 3: They'll either go on and leave us alone, or they'll
- 18:50Speaker 3: wait till the sun goes down and come in in
- 18:52Speaker 3: the dusk.
- 18:52Speaker 6: There's nothing to do but wait.
- 18:55Speaker 3: We can use the time to unload part of the
- 18:57Speaker 3: wagon and adjust the things they'll need in there, though.
- 19:01Speaker 3: Then we'll drive it off and cut the horses loose.
- 19:03Speaker 3: We don't want them milling around in case of a fight.
- 19:05Speaker 9: Sam!
- 19:06Speaker 4: Sam!
- 19:07Speaker 6: What, Ma? Get water from the creek.
- 19:09Speaker 5: Make a fire, quick.
- 19:10Speaker 6: Ma. Don't stand there.
- 19:12Speaker 2: You heard me.
- 19:13Speaker 6: Get moving.
- 19:20Speaker 5: Yes, ma.
- 19:29Speaker 8: Relax, Fraser.
- 19:31Speaker 9: She's going to be all right.
- 19:32Speaker 6: Sure. She's out here in nowhere with them up there.
- 19:36Speaker 6: This is just what I was afraid of.
- 19:38Speaker 8: Well, plenty have been born this way. You might have
- 19:42Speaker 8: been yourself, you know.
- 19:43Speaker 6: I know, but... Tad, where you going? Down to the creek.
- 19:47Speaker 6: Ma wants more water.
- 19:49Speaker 8: You better go with him, Chester.
- 19:50Speaker 6: Yes, sir. I should have gone two days ago. I
- 19:55Speaker 6: wanted her to have the best. Nothing but the best.
- 19:58Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, I know.
- 20:00Speaker 6: That's why I talked about hunting gold in California.
- 20:03Speaker 3: You know something, Sam? A man can waste a lifetime
- 20:09Speaker 3: looking for gold. But it's right in front of his eyes.
- 20:14Speaker 9: Where?
- 20:16Speaker 8: You're looking at it.
- 20:18Speaker 9: There's wealth here for a man, too.
- 20:19Speaker 6: I know it, Marshall.
- 20:23Speaker 9: Tad! Yeah, come on.
- 20:28Speaker 6: Tad.
- 20:29Speaker 7: You all right, Mr.
- 20:29Speaker 4: Dillon?
- 20:30Speaker 10: Yes, Nick.
- 20:31Speaker 7: One of them snuck up close as I chased him off.
- 20:33Speaker 8: Tad.
- 20:34Speaker 6: I'm all right, Sam. Just a crease in my arm.
- 20:36Speaker 9: What is it?
- 20:37Speaker 8: We'll fix it when we get him back to the hut.
- 20:39Speaker 4: There we go.
- 20:56Speaker 9: Is it tight enough, son?
- 20:58Speaker 6: Sure, Marshal. It's okay. How's Alice? I don't know. Ma
- 21:04Speaker 6: chased me away. I'm worried, Marshal.
- 21:07Speaker 3: And I'm more worried about those Indians. It's going to
- 21:10Speaker 3: be dark soon.
- 21:11Speaker 4: Mr.
- 21:12Speaker 7: Dillon, that patrol ought to be around here somewhere.
- 21:14Speaker 8: Yeah, I know.
- 21:15Speaker 9: I was hoping they'd show up.
- 21:16Speaker 7: Well, they can't be far. They was on the trail.
- 21:20Speaker 7: Maybe if I was to ride out.
- 21:21Speaker 8: Now, there's a better way, Chester. Signal them.
- 21:25Speaker 6: How?
- 21:25Speaker 9: Have a sign they've been looking for and hoping not
- 21:28Speaker 9: to see. Smoke.
- 21:30Speaker 6: You mean set the grass afire?
- 21:32Speaker 8: No, that'd smoke us out, too. No, the wagon.
- 21:36Speaker 6: Oh, but Marshal.
- 21:37Speaker 8: Yeah, I know, Fraser. It's like burning your bridges behind you,
- 21:40Speaker 8: but it's the only thing we've got. All right.
- 21:46Speaker 6: All right, we'll burn it. All right.
- 22:02Speaker 9: That's almost out.
- 22:03Speaker 7: But it sure sent up a lot of smoke while
- 22:05Speaker 7: it lasted.
- 22:06Speaker 6: You reckon the.
- 22:07Speaker 8: Calvary saw it, Mr.
- 22:08Speaker 10: Dillon?
- 22:08Speaker 8: That's hard to say, Chester.
- 22:10Speaker 7: But they did.
- 22:10Speaker 9: I hope they're hurrying.
- 22:12Speaker 7: Sun's most gone, all but the tops of the hills.
- 22:14Speaker 7: This valley's getting mighty shadowy.
- 22:17Speaker 8: We better set in a circle.
- 22:19Speaker 9: Each one watch his side.
- 22:20Speaker 6: Marshal!
- 22:21Speaker 8: Out there!
- 22:22Speaker 6: What's that?
- 22:23Speaker 9: What? No, just one of the horses, son. But you
- 22:29Speaker 9: keep looking.
- 22:30Speaker 6: Marshall, Marshall, listen. Look, up there, it's the Bluecoats.
- 22:35Speaker 8: They're here.
- 22:35Speaker 6: Oh, ain't that a welcome sight?
- 22:38Speaker 8: They're charging the engines. Run them off.
- 22:40Speaker 6: Marshall, we're going to be all right.
- 22:42Speaker 8: Yeah, Fraser. They'll get them now. Maybe if we.
- 22:45Speaker 6: Sam, get in here.
- 22:53Speaker 8: Alice.
- 22:54Speaker 10: Well, what are you staring at? But I'd think you'd
- 22:58Speaker 10: never seen a strapping, healthy baby boy before.
- 23:02Speaker 6: Alice?
- 23:03Speaker 7: I'm all right, darling.
- 23:04Speaker 9: We're both all right. I told you you didn't need
- 23:09Speaker 9: to worry about us.
- 23:11Speaker 10: All right, now, you menfolk, get on out of here.
- 23:13Speaker 2: Go on, skedaddle.
- 23:14Speaker 9: Yes, ma'am.
- 23:16Speaker 6: You too, Sam Fraser.
- 23:17Speaker 7: Well, I be quick.
- 23:26Speaker 8: Well, Sam, uh.
- 23:27Speaker 3: Chester and I'll be getting on in the Dodge. We'll
- 23:30Speaker 3: send a wagon out for you.
- 23:34Speaker 6: I reckon we won't be needing the wagon, Marshal. Sam,
- 23:39Speaker 6: you mean we're staying?
- 23:40Speaker 11: Well, we buried one here. And we born one here.
- 23:47Speaker 11: And we shed Fraser blood in this dirt. And it
- 23:54Speaker 11: is good dirt, Marshal. And it is a pleasant place.
- 23:58Speaker 9: Yes, it is.
- 24:01Speaker 6: You'll be welcome here any time.
- 24:04Speaker 9: Both of you. Thank you, Mr.
