- 0:41Speaker 1: I have so much that has to be said. I
- 0:46Speaker 1: have so many things that I want to share. Good
- 0:50Speaker 1: things and some things that aren't really all that great
- 0:59Speaker 1: in the news. You are probably aware of most of it.
- 1:07Speaker 1: And I shouldn't assume otherwise, but man, there's a lot
- 1:11Speaker 1: to be said about what's going on in this crazy
- 1:15Speaker 1: world of ours. And I'm going to try to chip
- 1:20Speaker 1: away at it here over the next couple of days. Friday,
- 1:25Speaker 1: G's going to be in here, and we're going to
- 1:27Speaker 1: attempt to do that. We're going to try really hard
- 1:32Speaker 1: to get you caught up and to process some of
- 1:36Speaker 1: what we're hearing. Oh, man. It's a lot. It really is.
- 1:48Speaker 1: But we're going to get to it. We're going to
- 1:50Speaker 1: get to it. It is Wednesday. We're looking at 55
- 1:55Speaker 1: degrees right now. 55 in the Granite City with clouds
- 2:02Speaker 1: and much, much needed rain showers. I'm going to be
- 2:05Speaker 1: happy about the rain. I don't know if you are,
- 2:09Speaker 1: but I am. The river is totally dried up in
- 2:13Speaker 1: my backyard. I mean, there's a little bit of water
- 2:15Speaker 1: going through, but we need the rain badly. 55, we
- 2:18Speaker 1: got rain coming today, 70 degrees for the daytime high.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Rain tonight, 64. I don't know what's going to shake
- 2:26Speaker 1: out with Courier Park today with the live music and
- 2:32Speaker 1: the food trucks and the farmer's market. I don't know,
- 2:35Speaker 1: but I'll be watching the Berry Partnership to see if
- 2:38Speaker 1: they put the kibosh on it. And I'll share it
- 2:41Speaker 1: with you. But you should be doing the same thing.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Pay attention. Watch. Rain, again, 64 tonight. And then tomorrow, Thursday,
- 2:48Speaker 1: clouds and sun and around 78 degrees. Happy Wednesday. Happy
- 2:52Speaker 1: hump day. Deb Phillips with us on the line right
- 2:55Speaker 1: now from the world. Good morning, Deb.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Good morning, J.D.
- 3:00Speaker 1: How the heck are you?
- 3:01Speaker 3: Oh, good.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Doing great today.
- 3:03Speaker 1: You off to a good start?
- 3:05Speaker 3: Yes.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Yes, we are.
- 3:07Speaker 1: What do we expect?
- 3:07Speaker 2: Papers are here.
- 3:08Speaker 3: We're sending them out.
- 3:10Speaker 1: What are we looking forward to today?
- 3:13Speaker 2: As always, in Central Vermont, we have a lot going on.
- 3:18Speaker 2: We have the schedule for the annual Tonbridge World's Fair.
- 3:23Speaker 2: It's September 17th through the 20th. And we also have
- 3:28Speaker 2: the schedule for the Plainfield Old Home Days on Saturday,
- 3:32Speaker 2: September 12th. We have the Granite Festival. Coming up on Saturday,
- 3:40Speaker 2: September 19th. A nice, nice add on that. And plus
- 3:47Speaker 2: the Berry Opera House is starting their season. And it's
- 3:53Speaker 2: with the Robert Cray Band on September 19th.
- 3:58Speaker 1: And the last time that he performed at the Opera House,
- 4:06Speaker 1: everybody was begging him to come back.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Well, he is back. Yeah. Definitely back.
- 4:13Speaker 1: He likes coming to Vermont, Robert Cray.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, I hear he's incredible.
- 4:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Anything else you can think of, Deb?
- 4:22Speaker 2: We do have a page honoring 9-11 25 years later,
- 4:29Speaker 2: which is hard to imagine that it's been 25 years,
- 4:32Speaker 2: but it definitely has been.
- 4:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:36Speaker 2: And we have the AR Market in Barry is celebrating
- 4:41Speaker 2: turning six years old. Wow. They're going to have 20%
- 4:46Speaker 2: off storewide on Saturday, September 12th.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Amazing. You said six years?
- 4:54Speaker 2: That's what it says.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Wow.
- 4:56Speaker 3: It's turning six.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Wow.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Wonderful little market. Definitely worth the time to go and
- 5:02Speaker 2: do some shopping.
- 5:03Speaker 1: I think it's fair to say. Everybody and anybody listening
- 5:08Speaker 1: loves the World Newspaper. We love getting that weekly copy
- 5:12Speaker 1: fresh in our hands, whether it's the crossword puzzles, whether
- 5:15Speaker 1: it's just reading the old bits or reading what's happening
- 5:19Speaker 1: under the Golden Dome. You guys are doing a great
- 5:21Speaker 1: job covering all that stuff, too.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Yeah. It's just amazing for such a small community how
- 5:27Speaker 2: much we have going on.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Deb, thank you ever so much. VT-World.com. I think if
- 5:35Speaker 1: you want to get the digital version, right?
- 5:37Speaker 4: Yes.
- 5:38Speaker 1: All right. Good stuff. Thank you, Deb.
- 5:41Speaker 3: All right.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Thanks, J.D.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Always a pleasure. Deb Phillips right there live on Wednesday
- 5:45Speaker 1: mornings from the world. Just a little brief snapshot of
- 5:51Speaker 1: what's going on. But do pick up a fresh copy today.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Have a look and read about everything that's happening. Wednesdays,
- 6:00Speaker 1: we try. to have.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Listen, I'm going to back that up. I'm not even
- 6:09Speaker 1: going to say we try. We have been very successful
- 6:15Speaker 1: in having impactful conversations on Wednesdays. Real conversations that really matter.
- 6:25Speaker 1: And they have touched many, many lives. I am so blessed...
- 6:33Speaker 1: to have been introduced to Tom Murphy a couple of
- 6:37Speaker 1: years ago. It was a chance thing. I'm so glad
- 6:42Speaker 1: that the, as he often says, that the planets aligned
- 6:47Speaker 1: and that I was able to meet him. And not
- 6:49Speaker 1: just Tom, but his network, his friends, the members, the
- 6:56Speaker 1: family members, team members, of course, yes, but more family
- 7:03Speaker 1: members of Sweethearts and Heroes. Beyond Rick Yarish. And to
- 7:13Speaker 1: have brought these guys consistently over the last couple of
- 7:18Speaker 1: years on the air, devoting our time together every Wednesday
- 7:25Speaker 1: has been massive for me. Personally, I have left many
- 7:32Speaker 1: Wednesdays with a head that is just swirling with thoughts.
- 7:41Speaker 1: The last two Wednesdays, I've left the air and gone
- 7:48Speaker 1: out and sat in my truck before I've even put
- 7:52Speaker 1: it in gear and had a pen in my hand,
- 7:55Speaker 1: and I'm still taking notes. even though we're off the air.
- 8:01Speaker 1: It's crazy. This guy right here, look at him. He's
- 8:04Speaker 1: nodding his head already. Mike Starner. Good morning, my friend.
- 8:08Speaker 3: How are you?
- 8:09Speaker 4: Good morning, JD. Thanks for having me. It's good to
- 8:11Speaker 4: be with you and your listeners, viewers, uh, on this
- 8:14Speaker 4: beautiful Wednesday.
- 8:15Speaker 1: You know exactly what I'm talking about. Don't you, Mike?
- 8:19Speaker 3: Oh, absolutely.
- 8:21Speaker 4: You know, um, Tom Murphy and his gang of folks
- 8:25Speaker 4: that go out there and help us all kind of
- 8:28Speaker 4: think about things differently.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Man, they're in the right place at the right time.
- 8:33Speaker 4: And it's kind of an organic thing, which is a
- 8:35Speaker 4: little different than some of the things we experience when
- 8:37Speaker 4: it comes to this topic. You know, if you listen
- 8:40Speaker 4: to his story, which I know your listeners have in
- 8:43Speaker 4: the past, you know, it starts off with his own.
- 8:46Speaker 4: personal experiences and, and getting involved with school age kids
- 8:50Speaker 4: and then getting in with military folks and now working
- 8:52Speaker 4: in the, in the trades and, and, you know, that
- 8:55Speaker 4: path just laid out before him in a very organic way.
- 8:58Speaker 4: And it's the relationships that he builds, the way he
- 9:00Speaker 4: approaches things and you're, you're dead on.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Yeah, man, he is something else. Mike, you. are the
- 9:07Speaker 1: Director of Outside Line Safety for the National Electrical Contractors Association.
- 9:15Speaker 1: As you like to put it, the safety man for NECA.
- 9:22Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:23Speaker 4: So NECA is a trade association. We represent the electrical
- 9:27Speaker 4: construction industry. We have chapters around the country. We have
- 9:32Speaker 4: what we consider to be inside chapters, sort of your
- 9:34Speaker 4: industrial commercial electricians. And then we have our outside, which is,
- 9:38Speaker 4: you know, the line contractors, the folks that work on
- 9:40Speaker 4: utility systems.
- 9:42Speaker 3: My role in safety is targeted to that outside line group.
- 9:48Speaker 4: And so, you know, I try to develop resources and
- 9:52Speaker 4: perform advocacy and work on policy that, helps electrical contractors
- 9:57Speaker 4: be successful. And, you know, we think about safety and
- 10:02Speaker 4: we think about, you know, occupational health and safety, things
- 10:05Speaker 4: that hurt you in the workplace.
- 10:08Speaker 3: And, you know, we've expanded that.
- 10:10Speaker 4: And there's been a sort of a journey that we've
- 10:12Speaker 4: gone on as an industry to think about workers in
- 10:15Speaker 4: their totality more than just, you know, when they're turning
- 10:18Speaker 4: a wrench, you know, how's their mind, body and spirit
- 10:22Speaker 4: on these work in these workplaces, too, because it has
- 10:24Speaker 4: an impact.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Mike, who do you report to? Who is your boss,
- 10:31Speaker 1: your supervisor, your superior?
- 10:33Speaker 4: I work for a great man named Jeff Fagan. Jeff
- 10:37Speaker 4: Fagan is NECA's chief operating officer. And that's one of
- 10:40Speaker 4: the advantages of my role is, you know, I report
- 10:43Speaker 4: directly to the top of the house. Of course, we
- 10:44Speaker 4: have a CEO, David Long, who is a champion of
- 10:48Speaker 4: in our industry for all things that help our contractors
- 10:51Speaker 4: be successful.
- 10:52Speaker 3: But he's got a soft spot for.
- 10:53Speaker 4: The human element, you know, helping people be the best
- 10:57Speaker 4: they can be. And with Jeff as our chief operating officer,
- 11:01Speaker 4: really helping to give us some flexibility and identifying things
- 11:06Speaker 4: that are going to make a big difference out there.
- 11:08Speaker 4: And so I couldn't be luckier to have sort of
- 11:12Speaker 4: that support structure above me. And then, of course, we
- 11:14Speaker 4: have a great team that surrounds us. You know, I
- 11:16Speaker 4: have a partner, Wes Wheeler, who's our are inside safety.
- 11:19Speaker 4: So if I'm outside safety, he's inside safety. And we
- 11:22Speaker 4: work collaboratively, collaboratively on things that are general safety and health,
- 11:25Speaker 4: but we're all tuned into this topic.
- 11:29Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Do these guys, do these gentlemen say to you, Mike, listen,
- 11:35Speaker 1: we need you to take this beyond just another corporate
- 11:42Speaker 1: safety initiative. We really need you to dig a little deeper,
- 11:47Speaker 1: get more involved, or is that just something that you've
- 11:50Speaker 1: just kind of inherently done?
- 11:54Speaker 4: It's both, you know, we have, we have marching orders
- 11:57Speaker 4: that this is a, this is a priority for our
- 12:00Speaker 4: industry to, to get out in front of this thing. We've,
- 12:03Speaker 4: we've sat on the sidelines for way too long. You know,
- 12:06Speaker 4: one of the sensitivities around mental health is that, you know,
- 12:10Speaker 4: it was kind of set aside for, for HR to
- 12:13Speaker 4: deal with, you know, protecting people, employee privacy, limiting liability,
- 12:18Speaker 4: you know, the exposure the company might have to getting
- 12:21Speaker 4: too ahead of their skis when it comes to personal
- 12:24Speaker 4: issues that employees might be having. And we've made a
- 12:28Speaker 4: conscious decision at NECA that, you know, we're going to
- 12:30Speaker 4: push past that, you know, that stigma, that restriction to
- 12:36Speaker 4: sort of isolate one part of the worker versus another
- 12:39Speaker 4: part of the worker, that just doesn't work.
- 12:42Speaker 3: And if we're going to have any impact, you know,
- 12:43Speaker 3: it's a mission of ours to go after it.
- 12:45Speaker 4: Now, you know, people that are in safety generally gravitate
- 12:50Speaker 4: to safety because they love people, you know, I'm that
- 12:52Speaker 4: way too. And so, you know, just in my day-to-day
- 12:57Speaker 4: activities and trying to learn more about people and connect
- 12:59Speaker 4: with people in a way that helps them, you know,
- 13:01Speaker 4: take advantage of their full potential. That's something I've always
- 13:03Speaker 4: kind of had inside me. But this gives me some
- 13:07Speaker 4: direction and something that I can work on. And, and honestly, I,
- 13:11Speaker 4: When we first started having these conversations, there wasn't a
- 13:14Speaker 4: ton of resources out there. There wasn't a lot of
- 13:16Speaker 4: people having these tough conversations in a way that were impactful.
- 13:20Speaker 4: There's a lot of awareness stuff like, hey, if you're
- 13:22Speaker 4: feeling down, call the employee assistance number and we'll get
- 13:26Speaker 4: you connected to professionals, that kind of thing.
- 13:28Speaker 3: But that doesn't really have the impact of what we
- 13:30Speaker 3: see with the Sweethearts and Heroes program.
- 13:33Speaker 1: Yeah, and we put a call out to anyone who
- 13:37Speaker 1: owns a business, anyone who manages employees anyone who has
- 13:42Speaker 1: a staff to look after, even on a real small level,
- 13:46Speaker 1: even if you have one or two or three or
- 13:49Speaker 1: five employees, being aware of mental health and how your
- 13:57Speaker 1: team is doing is one thing, but taking real action
- 14:01Speaker 1: and real preventative action is a whole other thing. And
- 14:05Speaker 1: that involves, for many of us, Mike, stepping out, outside
- 14:10Speaker 1: of a comfort zone and having these conversations that are
- 14:17Speaker 1: not often easy to have and not natural for us
- 14:22Speaker 1: to have. But you guys, I mean, the IBEWs everywhere
- 14:31Speaker 1: are really starting to wake up to this, man.
- 14:35Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 14:36Speaker 4: And that's one of the success stories that I'm really
- 14:38Speaker 4: happy to talk about is, you know, this is one
- 14:40Speaker 4: of those topics where labor and management get together. And
- 14:45Speaker 4: we were pretty unified in the approach and the importance
- 14:49Speaker 4: of it. And so, you know, one of the advantages,
- 14:51Speaker 4: you know, and I'm biased, but, you know, one of
- 14:53Speaker 4: the advantages of the NECA-IBW relationship is you have partners
- 14:59Speaker 4: to address some of these issues and you have scale.
- 15:02Speaker 4: So at the national level, you have NECA. which represents
- 15:05Speaker 4: the employers. And then you have the international office that
- 15:08Speaker 4: represents all the entirety of the IBEW membership. But then
- 15:13Speaker 4: we have local players. We have the local unions who
- 15:18Speaker 4: represent their members locally. And then we have our local chapters.
- 15:21Speaker 4: And so there's a local interaction that takes place too.
- 15:24Speaker 4: So this is not just strategically, we're on the same page.
- 15:28Speaker 4: This is on the tactical level, getting these resources, having
- 15:32Speaker 4: these conversations, you know, setting up meetings, you know, making
- 15:37Speaker 4: sure employees have what they need so they can attend
- 15:39Speaker 4: these meetings, making it a priority, you know, and having,
- 15:43Speaker 4: you know, union leadership say, this is something that's important
- 15:46Speaker 4: for our members. And also the contractor saying, hey, this
- 15:48Speaker 4: is something that we want to invest in. That's truly
- 15:51Speaker 4: been a success story.
- 15:52Speaker 3: And you're right.
- 15:53Speaker 4: You know, we have a lot of reach, you know,
- 15:56Speaker 4: we represent close to 60% of the market that's out there.
- 16:00Speaker 4: So the lion's share of electrical work that's performed out
- 16:02Speaker 4: there is performed by by union electricians and, and, and
- 16:06Speaker 4: supported by, you know, Nika contractors. So we're proud to
- 16:09Speaker 4: say that, and we can have an influence on the industry, uh,
- 16:12Speaker 4: in a way that that's meaningful and not just, you know, uh,
- 16:17Speaker 4: using a catchphrase or, or, or cute banner.
- 16:21Speaker 1: Here we are, uh, September suicide awareness month. I don't
- 16:26Speaker 1: need to certainly don't need to remind you of that. Um,
- 16:32Speaker 1: And we're going to talk about the fifth wire here
- 16:35Speaker 1: in just a second here and your description of it. But,
- 16:41Speaker 1: you know, Tom was telling me that he went down
- 16:46Speaker 1: and met with a large, large number of linemen. Had
- 16:55Speaker 1: circle group meetings, face-to-face meetings. And then when he left,
- 17:04Speaker 1: it was quiet for a little while, but one phone
- 17:08Speaker 1: call came in to him. And it was you. Yeah.
- 17:16Speaker 1: What was that all about?
- 17:19Speaker 4: Well, you know, like when I started out, you know,
- 17:21Speaker 4: his success story is because of who he is and
- 17:25Speaker 4: the people who he surrounds himself and what's important to him.
- 17:28Speaker 4: And if you ever go watch Tom, he'll tell you
- 17:31Speaker 4: his whole story, how this happened.
- 17:33Speaker 3: The breadcrumb trail, how it all developed over time.
- 17:35Speaker 4: But, you know, I, in my role, I support our
- 17:39Speaker 4: contractors and many of our contractors will have safety and
- 17:42Speaker 4: health days where they bring employees in and they, and
- 17:45Speaker 4: they have safety topics, sort of a stand down.
- 17:47Speaker 3: Hey, let's reset. Let's talk about safety and health.
- 17:51Speaker 4: And, you know, I attended one of these events is
- 17:53Speaker 4: North line utilities up in Syracuse area.
- 17:55Speaker 3: They had at the.
- 17:56Speaker 4: 1249 local union, 1249 is training facility there. They had
- 17:59Speaker 4: a really cool stand down. I've participated in a couple
- 18:02Speaker 4: of times, but this is the first time running into Tom. And,
- 18:06Speaker 4: you know, I kind of got prepped as people who
- 18:08Speaker 4: know Tom will, will help prep others to, to, to
- 18:12Speaker 4: meet Tom, you know, so you don't go in cold.
- 18:14Speaker 4: Cause Tom is high energy and he doesn't, and he
- 18:17Speaker 4: doesn't ease into it. You're getting all the time right away.
- 18:20Speaker 3: Yep.
- 18:20Speaker 4: And so I met, I met Tom at an opening
- 18:22Speaker 4: reception and here he comes, you know, big burly guy.
- 18:26Speaker 4: He's got the cauliflower ear. He's got the free hug
- 18:28Speaker 4: shirt on. He's got his painted nails and he's, 100%
- 18:31Speaker 4: right in your face right away.
- 18:32Speaker 3: Who are you? What do you do?
- 18:34Speaker 4: What's your family? And I was like, wow, what is
- 18:37Speaker 4: this guy all about? Well, the next day we had
- 18:39Speaker 4: the actual event and you mentioned the circles and, you know,
- 18:44Speaker 4: one of the, one of the really the magical things
- 18:46Speaker 4: about what Tom's doing is it taps into this.
- 18:48Speaker 3: Sort of primal way that human beings connect with each other.
- 18:51Speaker 4: And, and so he does this circle where he gets
- 18:53Speaker 4: folks around in a circle, like you might imagine being
- 18:55Speaker 4: around a campfire. And then you have to remember that
- 18:58Speaker 4: we're dealing with linemen, right? So these are linemen, linemen
- 19:00Speaker 4: are all type a personalities you know they gravitate to
- 19:03Speaker 4: this trade because they're risk takers that they're you know
- 19:06Speaker 4: do things that ordinary people don't necessarily want to do
- 19:09Speaker 4: so you get kind of like an outlaw element a
- 19:11Speaker 4: little ruggedness a little bit of you know hey you
- 19:14Speaker 4: know don't tell me what to do kind of personalities
- 19:17Speaker 4: and so we try to get these guys in and
- 19:19Speaker 4: have a meaningful session and so you know tom had
- 19:22Speaker 4: this classroom environment he brought everybody in he set the
- 19:25Speaker 4: ground rules he says as soon as we shut this
- 19:28Speaker 4: door you know this is going to be candid conversation.
- 19:30Speaker 4: We're going to talk about issues. You know, you don't
- 19:33Speaker 4: have to participate, but you can't just sit and watch. Um, and, and,
- 19:38Speaker 4: and so, you know, you really got people's mind tuned
- 19:40Speaker 4: in and here comes one guy late to the meeting,
- 19:44Speaker 4: opens the door, walks in like a, you know like
- 19:46Speaker 4: a grouchy old cowboy slams the door shut and tom
- 19:50Speaker 4: says oh i like you come sit next to me
- 19:52Speaker 4: oh shit so tom brought him next to him uh
- 19:56Speaker 4: and you know at the first he was arms crossed
- 19:59Speaker 4: he's grouchy he doesn't want to be there he thinks
- 20:01Speaker 4: it's all stupid and man by the time the circle
- 20:04Speaker 4: was done by the time tom was done working his
- 20:06Speaker 4: magic this guy had opened up and was telling us things,
- 20:09Speaker 4: very intimate things about his life and, and things that
- 20:12Speaker 4: he was struggling with and things that he's overcome.
- 20:15Speaker 3: And that's when I knew I said, this is different. Yeah.
- 20:19Speaker 4: This is different because it, it cracks through, it cracks
- 20:22Speaker 4: through a veneer and it's very thick in our trade.
- 20:24Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:26Speaker 4: And it gets people to open up in a way which,
- 20:28Speaker 4: which made a hundred percent sense to me. If we
- 20:30Speaker 4: can get people to open up and connect with each other,
- 20:32Speaker 4: everything else that we want to do is so much easier. So,
- 20:35Speaker 4: You know, I went home and simmered on it for
- 20:37Speaker 4: a little bit, and, of course, we have a safety
- 20:39Speaker 4: conference that we do each year, and we always look
- 20:42Speaker 4: for impactful speakers.
- 20:43Speaker 3: And I said, I don't have to think about this one.
- 20:45Speaker 4: I said, we're going to bring Tom in, do his
- 20:47Speaker 4: general session that he does, you know, the ignition, as
- 20:51Speaker 4: they call it, and get everybody hyped up about what
- 20:53Speaker 4: they want to do. And then we'll do some circles
- 20:55Speaker 4: just to give people a flavor for it, and then
- 20:56Speaker 4: the rest is history.
- 20:58Speaker 1: Isn't that something else? You know, look at this. We
- 21:02Speaker 1: got Chad Altheiser. who's tuned in right now. Listen, say hello.
- 21:08Speaker 3: Yeah, man.
- 21:10Speaker 1: Did you have a chance to see him on the
- 21:11Speaker 1: air with me a couple of weeks ago?
- 21:13Speaker 3: I did. Yep. And I just met him recently.
- 21:15Speaker 4: We just had an event at our American line builders chapter,
- 21:18Speaker 4: you know, trying to get Tom more and more exposure,
- 21:21Speaker 4: not that he needs it because it's catching on wildfire now,
- 21:23Speaker 4: but we want to make sure that we have more exposure.
- 21:26Speaker 4: And I met Chad and, and I got to hear
- 21:28Speaker 4: him present his story to a group of our folks
- 21:30Speaker 4: and man, what a great dude he is.
- 21:32Speaker 1: Yeah, man, and tougher than nails. And here's the thing,
- 21:36Speaker 1: and we all know this. I'm not saying anything that's
- 21:40Speaker 1: new here. Whether it's Chad, whether it's Rick, these guys are,
- 21:48Speaker 1: they're badasses. I mean, for real, what they've done. Just
- 21:55Speaker 1: in the military alone, badasses, tougher than nails. And these
- 22:04Speaker 1: are guys just like linemen who understand that when it's showtime,
- 22:15Speaker 1: it's showtime.
- 22:17Speaker 3: You're right.
- 22:18Speaker 1: And it doesn't matter what else is going on. It
- 22:21Speaker 1: doesn't matter if it's raining, sleeting, snowing, windy, dark. It's showtime,
- 22:35Speaker 1: and you all need to suck it up, put the
- 22:40Speaker 1: boots on, and we need to go into action. There
- 22:44Speaker 1: are people that rely on us. Some of them are
- 22:49Speaker 1: standing right next to us, and many of them, most
- 22:54Speaker 1: of them, are not. But there's no time for bullshit.
- 23:00Speaker 1: It's action time. So whatever it is that's crawling around
- 23:06Speaker 1: inside your head, renting space, distracting you, bothering you, any
- 23:15Speaker 1: weight that you're carrying, you got to shake that shit
- 23:18Speaker 1: off right now, Mike.
- 23:22Speaker 3: Yeah, and he promotes that. He doesn't sugarcoat it.
- 23:26Speaker 4: He says, look, when it's time to do what we
- 23:27Speaker 4: got to do, push that stuff down, figure out what
- 23:32Speaker 4: we need to do next.
- 23:33Speaker 3: Let's get this over with.
- 23:34Speaker 4: But but when we but when we have a chance
- 23:37Speaker 4: to debrief and when we have a chance to kind
- 23:39Speaker 4: of open up a little bit and relax, then then
- 23:42Speaker 4: we need to let the we need to let that
- 23:44Speaker 4: dragon out, because if not, it just sits in there
- 23:47Speaker 4: and stews and stews and stews.
- 23:48Speaker 3: And that's one of the things that Chad's story is
- 23:50Speaker 3: so great.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Right.
- 23:50Speaker 4: He talks about all the adversity and and how through
- 23:54Speaker 4: time you had to. you know, put these layers of
- 23:57Speaker 4: defenses over top of something that was down deep inside
- 24:00Speaker 4: that he never was really able to get out.
- 24:01Speaker 3: But once he started to recognize.
- 24:03Speaker 4: That and reflect a little bit, have the support system
- 24:06Speaker 4: around him to help, you know, foster those kinds of conversations,
- 24:11Speaker 4: then you can do a lot of great things. And,
- 24:13Speaker 4: you know, you talked about, you know, the nature of
- 24:15Speaker 4: these guys, you know, Rick and his story and Chad
- 24:18Speaker 4: and Tom, everybody comes to the story, gives them a
- 24:20Speaker 4: lot of credibility. And that's the key, right? That's the
- 24:23Speaker 4: cost of admission that gets you into the room. But
- 24:26Speaker 4: what the magic really is that when our guys start
- 24:30Speaker 4: to see them open up about their personal struggles and
- 24:33Speaker 4: their stories, then it becomes relatable in a way that's
- 24:37Speaker 4: not just about credibility. It's not just, okay, I'm going
- 24:40Speaker 4: to listen to you. It's about, man, I'm experiencing the
- 24:42Speaker 4: same stuff or something very, very similar. And then guys
- 24:46Speaker 4: can let go of that stigma.
- 24:48Speaker 3: I think.
- 24:49Speaker 1: I've heard you say the word connection a couple of times,
- 24:53Speaker 1: but man– you just said it relatable, the R word. Um,
- 24:58Speaker 1: you know, what I hang, like I try to hang
- 25:02Speaker 1: my hat on here at aired out is, is, is
- 25:06Speaker 1: one of those ours. It's, it's relatable, real, raw, relevant, relatable.
- 25:14Speaker 1: If you can't be relatable on some level, even humor.
- 25:20Speaker 1: I mean, we, I, We joke around a lot here
- 25:24Speaker 1: on the air. But some of what we're joking around
- 25:27Speaker 1: about is relatable stuff that happens in real life at home,
- 25:33Speaker 1: in your family environment. But, man, it's like you've got
- 25:38Speaker 1: to connect with people from the standpoint of relatability. It's
- 25:45Speaker 1: almost everything.
- 25:47Speaker 4: Yeah, it's, you know, these guys are judicious with the
- 25:51Speaker 4: trust that they give out. And so you have to
- 25:53Speaker 4: earn the trust. You have to kind of get it
- 25:55Speaker 4: right away. Uh, because once they, they give you the
- 25:59Speaker 4: sniff test and they think if you're just give them
- 26:00Speaker 4: a tagline or something out of the.
- 26:02Speaker 3: Company brochure, Oh, hell yeah. Yeah. You've lost them.
- 26:05Speaker 2: Right.
- 26:06Speaker 4: And so if you can build trust and then, and
- 26:08Speaker 4: then they can relate to what your, your, you know,
- 26:10Speaker 4: your story and say, Hey, this is something that's very
- 26:12Speaker 4: similar to my issue or my struggle or, or my
- 26:15Speaker 4: challenge or, or somebody that I know, uh, then you
- 26:19Speaker 4: can have the real conversation. Then you can start to
- 26:20Speaker 4: have discussions about things. Okay, what are we going to
- 26:22Speaker 4: do next?
- 26:24Speaker 1: Wynton Buddington just dropped a line here in the comments
- 26:27Speaker 1: live here saying, everyone has a struggle we know nothing about.
- 26:32Speaker 1: And literally, the word everyone.
- 26:36Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 26:38Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that's a true statement, right?
- 26:40Speaker 1: Would you agree? 100%. You describe the Fifth Wire program
- 26:45Speaker 1: as something that is somewhat of a solution-based initiative. What
- 26:51Speaker 1: is the Fifth Wire program in your reality, your definition
- 26:57Speaker 1: of it?
- 26:59Speaker 4: I think it's a structured program that gives clear direction
- 27:03Speaker 4: on what we're trying to do.
- 27:05Speaker 3: And it's a map, right?
- 27:06Speaker 4: And so one of the great things about Tom, whether
- 27:09Speaker 4: he's doing a general session or if he's doing some
- 27:11Speaker 4: of this Fifth Wire work, is one thing builds on
- 27:14Speaker 4: top of the next thing. So you have to get
- 27:16Speaker 4: people prepared for what's coming next. And the structure of
- 27:19Speaker 4: the program really lends itself to that. So, you know,
- 27:22Speaker 4: it has a couple of different versions. There's an apprentice
- 27:24Speaker 4: version that that's really been catching on like.
- 27:27Speaker 3: Wildfire with our local unions.
- 27:29Speaker 4: And then there's a contractor version that we're promoting with
- 27:32Speaker 4: our contractors, something that they can bring in house.
- 27:34Speaker 3: And then there's different tiers.
- 27:35Speaker 4: You know, you can have like the full fledged, give me,
- 27:38Speaker 4: give me everything you got Tom Cadillac option. And that's
- 27:42Speaker 4: where it's a fully facilitated program. You know, based, you know,
- 27:45Speaker 4: time-based structure to it. You know, we have, you know,
- 27:49Speaker 4: the introduction where they really kind of get people pumped
- 27:52Speaker 4: about what this is all about and get people connected
- 27:54Speaker 4: because you got to get them with the hook so
- 27:57Speaker 4: that they're ready for the next thing. And then once
- 28:00Speaker 4: you get these people emotionally invested, then you can start
- 28:03Speaker 4: really working on them.
- 28:04Speaker 3: So there's a facilitator training.
- 28:06Speaker 4: There's all kinds of things that you can take and
- 28:08Speaker 4: sort of kind of train the trainer, and you can
- 28:10Speaker 4: expand this out further in your organization. So we talk
- 28:13Speaker 4: about awareness a lot, you know, and Tom makes the
- 28:16Speaker 4: joke about the not, you know, the coins that have
- 28:18Speaker 4: numbers on them or, or the bumper sticker that says, hey,
- 28:21Speaker 4: you need help call somebody and, and, and as good
- 28:24Speaker 4: as important as those things are to raise awareness, not
- 28:26Speaker 4: something you can really do something with, right?
- 28:29Speaker 3: It makes you feel good that you that you put
- 28:31Speaker 3: them out on the table.
- 28:32Speaker 4: It makes you feel good that maybe somebody has a
- 28:34Speaker 4: sticker on their hard hat, but is it really actionable?
- 28:37Speaker 4: The Fifth Wire program is an actionable plan. So if
- 28:41Speaker 4: you're looking for like, what can I do? And you're
- 28:43Speaker 4: kind of pulling at straws and you're saying, okay, well,
- 28:46Speaker 4: I'm hoping that out of this plethora of options that
- 28:49Speaker 4: I have that are centered around total worker health, mental health,
- 28:53Speaker 4: suicide prevention, opioid addiction, out of all these things that
- 28:56Speaker 4: are out there, I'm just hoping that one of these
- 28:58Speaker 4: things works. You don't have to hope with this program.
- 29:01Speaker 4: This program is tried and true. There's testimonials that, I mean,
- 29:07Speaker 4: we could go over them over and over and over.
- 29:09Speaker 4: We could spend two or three of your podcasts talking
- 29:12Speaker 4: about just testimonials. People said, hey, I sat through your session.
- 29:16Speaker 4: We applied it locally. I actually saved somebody's life. They
- 29:21Speaker 4: called me up. They were in a precarious situation. We
- 29:25Speaker 4: talked through it. They were able to connect with each
- 29:28Speaker 4: other like a human being. Yeah, which is which is
- 29:31Speaker 4: what we're after. See, that's one of the other things here, JD.
- 29:33Speaker 4: This finds its way into the workplace, but it's really
- 29:41Speaker 4: a broader issue, right?
- 29:42Speaker 3: It's a societal issue. It's a generational issue.
- 29:45Speaker 4: There's all kinds of things that are bubbling out there
- 29:48Speaker 4: in the ether that just find their way into the workplace.
- 29:52Speaker 4: And so the question is, what can you do in
- 29:55Speaker 4: the workplace first to eliminate stressors that add to it?
- 29:59Speaker 4: And what can you do to build that sort of
- 30:01Speaker 4: connection and purpose? So people have a release and this
- 30:04Speaker 4: program helps you do that.
- 30:05Speaker 2: Wow.
- 30:06Speaker 1: You know, I I'm, I'm sitting here, I'm, I'm listening
- 30:09Speaker 1: to you. I'm thinking about first responders, you know, here
- 30:14Speaker 1: we are, um, head first into the anniversary of September 11th.
- 30:22Speaker 1: I think of, of just all the, the first responders
- 30:26Speaker 1: then that, um, didn't have to think twice about responding, reacting,
- 30:39Speaker 1: knowing that they were running into the situation that they
- 30:45Speaker 1: may not be able to, and frankly, probably wouldn't be
- 30:50Speaker 1: running out of first responders everywhere, man. And you know,
- 30:57Speaker 1: The thing is, though, Mike, you know, the other side
- 31:00Speaker 1: of this is that, and maybe this is stigma. I
- 31:05Speaker 1: don't know. I mean, I want to hear what Wynton
- 31:07Speaker 1: and Chad have to say, too, and anyone. But it's
- 31:10Speaker 1: like there's this notion of, hey, man, you joined the military. Hey, man,
- 31:23Speaker 1: you're a paramedic. hey, you're a fireman. You signed up
- 31:34Speaker 1: for this. This is what you wanted. There's really not
- 31:43Speaker 1: a whole hell of a lot of time or space
- 31:47Speaker 1: to be talking about the effects that this industry or
- 31:55Speaker 1: that this career that you've chosen has had on you
- 32:06Speaker 1: or is having on you. There's just not a lot
- 32:10Speaker 1: of time for that, man. You signed up for this.
- 32:14Speaker 1: You know what you've got to do. Now you got
- 32:17Speaker 1: to do it.
- 32:20Speaker 3: Yeah. And we see that reflected in the numbers, right?
- 32:22Speaker 4: And so these high risk industries or these high risk environments,
- 32:25Speaker 4: they have higher numbers of suicides.
- 32:29Speaker 3: And, you know, why is it?
- 32:33Speaker 4: I mean, I don't know if anybody really has the answer,
- 32:36Speaker 4: but you could make the assumption. It makes sense that,
- 32:39Speaker 4: you know, just exactly what you said. There's a high
- 32:43Speaker 4: demand to be at your best, to respond without asking questions,
- 32:47Speaker 4: you know, leave your feelings off to the side.
- 32:50Speaker 3: And we never give them a chance to purge, unload
- 32:56Speaker 3: that stuff.
- 32:58Speaker 4: And whether that's, whether that's the Marines, you know, busting
- 33:02Speaker 4: through the front line to go and do something on
- 33:04Speaker 4: the battlefield, or whether it's a lineman who's responding to
- 33:07Speaker 4: a hurricane or working, you know, many of these guys
- 33:12Speaker 4: work hundreds of miles from home. They're, they're, they're on
- 33:16Speaker 4: a big project. They live on the East coast or
- 33:18Speaker 4: out on the West coast. Cause that's where the big
- 33:19Speaker 4: project is. They're living in a man camp, which is
- 33:22Speaker 4: just a big trailer park for, for guys that are
- 33:26Speaker 4: working away from home. You know, they, They tend to
- 33:29Speaker 4: pair up in these trailers so that they have some comradery,
- 33:31Speaker 4: but you know, what are they doing? Are they taking
- 33:33Speaker 4: care of their health? Are they, you know, they're working
- 33:35Speaker 4: 16 hours or more a day.
- 33:37Speaker 3: Uh, they get home.
- 33:38Speaker 4: Do they, do they go to the gym? Do they
- 33:42Speaker 4: eat healthy meals? Are they getting to bed early? Probably not.
- 33:45Speaker 4: And then what's going on at home. You got, you know,
- 33:48Speaker 4: financial issues building, you know, mama's got a problem. The
- 33:52Speaker 4: washing machine broke, the kids got recital and she's worried
- 33:55Speaker 4: about where dad is.
- 33:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 33:57Speaker 4: There's things build up. And so it's layers, layers, and layers.
- 34:00Speaker 4: And if you don't have a system in place, an intentional,
- 34:03Speaker 4: that's what I would say. What you do in this area,
- 34:07Speaker 4: you have to be intentional about. You can't just leave
- 34:10Speaker 4: it to chance. You can't just say, well, if I
- 34:11Speaker 4: have a chance to talk to somebody and see how
- 34:13Speaker 4: they're doing, I'm going to do it. You have to
- 34:14Speaker 4: be very intentional. So that's my leadership message here is
- 34:19Speaker 4: if you have a responsibility for the people that are
- 34:21Speaker 4: around you, even if they don't directly report to you,
- 34:24Speaker 4: it's a coming upon all of us to help create
- 34:28Speaker 4: the environment where people can purge, as you put it,
- 34:32Speaker 4: and get more.
- 34:33Speaker 3: Relief in their life.
- 34:34Speaker 4: So it's not just always being smacked in the face
- 34:37Speaker 4: every day. You have some way of releasing that burden
- 34:42Speaker 4: onto somebody else. And that's really the human connection piece, right?
- 34:44Speaker 4: That's part of Tom's message is, you know, thousands of
- 34:49Speaker 4: years of human connection and tribal influence and working together
- 34:53Speaker 4: to solve problems and identifying what our biggest danger is
- 34:56Speaker 4: and what's the solution and capitalizing on the collective strengths
- 35:01Speaker 4: of your tribe and figuring it out together. That's what
- 35:05Speaker 4: our society has kind of forgotten a little bit. And
- 35:09Speaker 4: certainly in the workplace, we're not leveraging that as much
- 35:11Speaker 4: as we should either.
- 35:13Speaker 1: During the circle meetings that you've had with Tom, Have
- 35:19Speaker 1: you– I think I know the answer to this, but
- 35:22Speaker 1: I'm going to ask it anyways. Have you felt the
- 35:27Speaker 1: energy of, whoa, we're out of the comfort zone here?
- 35:33Speaker 1: What is this all about? What are we doing? What
- 35:35Speaker 1: are we talking about here? Holy crap. People just kind
- 35:40Speaker 1: of squirming and wanting to get the hell out of there?
- 35:43Speaker 3: Yeah. Have you seen that? I've experienced it.
- 35:47Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean– Um, so I've been through a few
- 35:50Speaker 4: circles myself and, you know, you kind of got an
- 35:53Speaker 4: idea of where he's going with it, right? He's getting
- 35:55Speaker 4: everybody ready. He's going to start off with soft, softball questions.
- 35:58Speaker 4: He kind of facilitates a discussion. You go around the horn.
- 36:01Speaker 4: People can offer up something where they can choose not to.
- 36:05Speaker 4: Everybody wants to participate generally, right? Most, most people don't
- 36:08Speaker 4: want to be that grouchy lineman I was telling you about.
- 36:10Speaker 4: Most of them want to participate somehow, some way. So
- 36:12Speaker 4: they're thinking about, okay, how am I going to respond
- 36:15Speaker 4: to this question that he's asking without making myself too vulnerable.
- 36:19Speaker 2: Right.
- 36:19Speaker 4: I don't look like a goofball. So that's what I
- 36:21Speaker 4: think most people's anxiety is around. How open can I be?
- 36:25Speaker 4: So they give, you know, like when they give you
- 36:27Speaker 4: a job interview, they say, tell me something about yourself
- 36:29Speaker 4: that that's not so great. And you always try to,
- 36:32Speaker 4: you always try to use a strength as a weakness.
- 36:34Speaker 4: So yeah, I just worked too hard.
- 36:37Speaker 3: That's terrible.
- 36:38Speaker 4: I mean, that's, that's what guys start to do when
- 36:41Speaker 4: they first go off, right. As it starts going right.
- 36:43Speaker 4: But then here's the magic. You can't control it. It
- 36:47Speaker 4: has a life of its own. By the time you
- 36:49Speaker 4: get two or three in, people say, you know what,
- 36:52Speaker 4: I'm going to share a little bit more. I'm going
- 36:54Speaker 4: to share a little bit more. And then when somebody
- 36:55Speaker 4: else recognizes somebody else is being vulnerable, then they're vulnerable.
- 37:00Speaker 4: And then by the time it gets to you, man,
- 37:02Speaker 4: something you were thinking about saying it was very safe,
- 37:05Speaker 4: you just come out and say it, man, whatever that
- 37:07Speaker 4: deep down thing is, and you start to cry. And
- 37:10Speaker 4: you start to look across the room and other people
- 37:12Speaker 4: are looking at you in a way that's not judging, but.
- 37:16Speaker 3: They're like, I hear you, brother.
- 37:19Speaker 4: Man, it's magical. And you really can't talk about it
- 37:22Speaker 4: like me and you talking about it here.
- 37:24Speaker 1: Sure.
- 37:26Speaker 4: You have to be in the room and you have
- 37:29Speaker 4: to open.
- 37:31Speaker 3: Your heart in that room for you to really understand
- 37:34Speaker 3: what it is.
- 37:35Speaker 1: I keep telling Tom, he's not listening to me. But
- 37:39Speaker 1: I keep telling him, I'm like, dude, we need to
- 37:41Speaker 1: get like IBEW heavy hitters and Sweethearts and Heroes family
- 37:53Speaker 1: to sit in one gargantuan circle. And maybe live stream
- 38:06Speaker 1: the thing.
- 38:07Speaker 2: Maybe. Maybe.
- 38:09Speaker 4: Yeah, that might break the time-space continuum. Because I'm telling you,
- 38:15Speaker 4: you get 20 guys in a room, it's about.
- 38:16Speaker 3: All you can take.
- 38:17Speaker 1: I know, man. I know. You know, Tom asked me,
- 38:21Speaker 1: I don't know, a couple of years ago, I think
- 38:24Speaker 1: it was, to come up and sit in a circle
- 38:30Speaker 1: with a bunch of high school students in Peru, New York.
- 38:34Speaker 1: And I don't know. two and a half hour, three
- 38:39Speaker 1: hour drive, something like that. It was my first circle
- 38:46Speaker 1: group with Tom. And I'll tell you, I've said this
- 38:52Speaker 1: before in the air, but I'll say it again. I
- 38:56Speaker 1: don't remember my three hour drive home. I don't remember it.
- 39:05Speaker 1: I don't know how I stopped that. Stop lights. I
- 39:10Speaker 1: was so consumed with what I had heard from these
- 39:17Speaker 1: teenagers was unbelievable. And I was just so filled with
- 39:25Speaker 1: so many follow-up questions that I wasn't allowed to. ask
- 39:30Speaker 1: because you were forced to listen, Mike.
- 39:35Speaker 3: Yes, man. How tough that is. Yeah.
- 39:40Speaker 4: And you know what, you know, I've been there too.
- 39:44Speaker 4: And that's why I said it has a light. It
- 39:45Speaker 4: takes a life of its own. You don't have to honestly,
- 39:48Speaker 4: you don't have to promote this program other than making
- 39:51Speaker 4: sure people have access to it. Cause once, once they participate,
- 39:53Speaker 4: they're going to have the same experience you had now,
- 39:56Speaker 4: you know, it's even tougher. I can imagine listening to
- 39:59Speaker 4: the kids and all the baggage that these young people
- 40:02Speaker 4: are carrying. It's just, that's heartbreaking. You know, my wife
- 40:05Speaker 4: works in an elementary school and she's a support room
- 40:08Speaker 4: assistant and her job is to, you know, work with
- 40:11Speaker 4: these kids that have trouble, you know, managing the behavior and, and,
- 40:15Speaker 4: and their emotions and things. And, And, you know, it's
- 40:18Speaker 4: heartbreaking just to hear the things that come to the surface.
- 40:22Speaker 3: That you can't help but see.
- 40:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 40:24Speaker 4: I can't imagine what that's like to hear from these
- 40:27Speaker 4: kids the things that they don't share or they don't
- 40:29Speaker 4: want you to see.
- 40:30Speaker 1: Yeah, right. Comments coming in. Simple, action-based, life-saving. Everything can
- 40:37Speaker 1: be hard. Everyone has a different threshold for hard, and
- 40:42Speaker 1: everyone feels pressure somewhere in their lives, whether it's at
- 40:45Speaker 1: work or at home. Wynton just dropped a comment here saying,
- 40:48Speaker 1: the magic and power of Circle is learning other stories
- 40:53Speaker 1: and seeing the connections to your experience. This is what
- 40:57Speaker 1: builds hope.
- 41:01Speaker 3: Yeah, empathy.
- 41:02Speaker 1: Empathy.
- 41:03Speaker 3: Yeah, man.
- 41:04Speaker 1: This is tremendous stuff. I, you know, speaking on behalf
- 41:12Speaker 1: of Sweethearts and Heroes, I'm so glad. that you took
- 41:19Speaker 1: the initiative to pick up the phone and, and contact
- 41:22Speaker 1: Tom and say, well, might need to have you back
- 41:29Speaker 1: or let's do something more together.
- 41:34Speaker 4: Well, and you know what, you know, yeah, it's, it's
- 41:36Speaker 4: a good thing for me to have as a, as
- 41:38Speaker 4: an offering for our members.
- 41:39Speaker 3: It's a good thing for us to do collectively to help.
- 41:44Speaker 4: Do something to make it, to make a difference. But
- 41:48Speaker 4: most importantly, Tom is my friend. And so, you know,
- 41:52Speaker 4: I have a lifelong relationship now with a man who's
- 41:55Speaker 4: out there who's, who just is the right person at
- 41:58Speaker 4: the right time with the right message.
- 42:02Speaker 3: His heart is so big.
- 42:03Speaker 4: And here's something I don't think everybody talks about Tom
- 42:05Speaker 4: and his, his high energy and his, you know, stature and, and,
- 42:10Speaker 4: you know, some of the aggressiveness in his, in his approach.
- 42:14Speaker 4: But he's pretty learned on, you know, the behavioral science, right?
- 42:18Speaker 4: If you listen to him talk about, you know, the
- 42:21Speaker 4: actual academic side of how human beings tick and the
- 42:26Speaker 4: philosophy that's out there and the site, he'll cite philosophers
- 42:30Speaker 4: and he'll tell stories.
- 42:31Speaker 3: That, I mean, he's deep, brother. He's not just a
- 42:35Speaker 3: beautiful face.
- 42:37Speaker 1: No. Or big muscles.
- 42:39Speaker 2: Right.
- 42:41Speaker 1: It is literally impossible to put that guy in a box.
- 42:45Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 42:46Speaker 3: Yeah. It's unique.
- 42:48Speaker 1: Yeah. Literally and figuratively. But yeah, man, he's top brass.
- 42:54Speaker 1: And by the way, that's what he refers to you
- 42:59Speaker 1: as top brass. You're doing a great job, Mike. I mean,
- 43:05Speaker 1: it's so much more than a job. And I hope. Respectfully.
- 43:12Speaker 1: that those gentlemen that you mentioned earlier are aware of
- 43:17Speaker 1: what you're doing for Nika. It's massive. It's not big. It's,
- 43:23Speaker 1: it's massive and it's totally essential.
- 43:27Speaker 3: Well, it's a collective effort, right?
- 43:29Speaker 4: The things that you're doing JD to amplify the message,
- 43:32Speaker 4: everything that we're doing to try to, you know, promote
- 43:34Speaker 4: it and get it more broadly available to folks. It's
- 43:37Speaker 4: all of us rowing in the same direction together.
- 43:40Speaker 1: Yeah, man. Thanks for coming on, Mike. I appreciate it
- 43:44Speaker 1: so much. You're doing yeoman's work. You and the rest
- 43:48Speaker 1: of the team with Sweethearts and Heroes. I hope to
- 43:53Speaker 1: meet you someday. It would be great if we did
- 43:55Speaker 1: this big circle-a-thon at some point.
- 44:00Speaker 3: Just a phone call away, my friend.
- 44:02Speaker 1: Yeah, man. Thank you so much, Mike.
- 44:05Speaker 3: Thank you. Have a great day, everybody.
- 44:07Speaker 1: You got it. Let them get back to work. Yeah, wow. Incredible.
- 44:12Speaker 1: This is the kind of stuff that I'm talking about, man.
- 44:16Speaker 1: It's impactful stuff like this that really, really makes a difference.
- 44:23Speaker 1: If this is something that resonates with you, whether you
- 44:33Speaker 1: own a business, have a couple of employees, as I
- 44:36Speaker 1: said earlier, or whether you're managing a huge staff. And frankly,
- 44:41Speaker 1: it doesn't really matter what kind of business it is.
- 44:46Speaker 1: Because your employees, whoever they are, are carrying some form
- 44:56Speaker 1: of weight. And your job, I think, as a business owner,
- 45:02Speaker 1: as a manager, is to not just make sure that
- 45:07Speaker 1: the numbers are in at the end of the month,
- 45:11Speaker 1: and that your customers are happy, but that your employees
- 45:17Speaker 1: are as happy as they can be, and that you
- 45:22Speaker 1: are connected to them on a level that is beyond
- 45:28Speaker 1: that cashier checkout line, or whatever it is that they do.
- 45:37Speaker 1: Great stuff this morning. Sweethearts and heroes. Every single Wednesday.
- 45:42Speaker 1: I don't know that we... What have we missed?
- 45:45Speaker 2: One?
- 45:46Speaker 3: Two?
- 45:50Speaker 1: Out of the last couple of years, Wednesdays, I look
- 45:53Speaker 1: forward to them all week long. Thank you, Mike Starner,
- 46:00Speaker 1: Director of Outside Line Safety for NECA, National Electrical... Contractors Association,
- 46:11Speaker 1: who's connected with us just outside of Baltimore this morning.
- 46:19Speaker 1: Great stuff. Chatting with Deb Phillips this morning, leading off
- 46:26Speaker 1: your Wednesday morning, who was saying that in today's world,
- 46:31Speaker 1: newspaper is the complete schedule for the Tunbridge World's Fair.
- 46:37Speaker 1: So grab a copy of The World when you see
- 46:40Speaker 1: it today. It is actually on the move right now.
- 46:44Speaker 1: It hit newsstands everywhere. But it's also being hand-delivered by
- 46:52Speaker 1: folks on foot right now. And my copy will be
- 46:55Speaker 1: showing up here at the studio any second. I can't
- 46:57Speaker 1: wait to see the Tunbridge World's Fair schedule. This is
- 47:04Speaker 1: the time of year where you're like, ooh, ooh, got
- 47:06Speaker 1: to do that. Ooh, got to do that before it
- 47:09Speaker 1: gets any later. Man, there's a lot of stuff that's
- 47:16Speaker 1: happening here. And I'm just glancing at the calendar. Hillsborough
- 47:22Speaker 1: County Agricultural Fair. over in New Hampshire is going on.
- 47:29Speaker 1: We got Tunbridge. That's happening right now, by the way. Uh, well,
- 47:33Speaker 1: wait a minute. Hold on. Starts on Friday, runs through
- 47:36Speaker 1: the 13th Hillsboro. I'm talking about. And then on the
- 47:40Speaker 1: 17th is the kickoff to the Tunbridge world's fair. How
- 47:43Speaker 1: many years is it now? A hundred and what now?
- 47:49Speaker 1: I should know. I don't. I admit it. It's one 30,
- 47:54Speaker 1: one 50, something like that. It's, Long-ass time. Got to
- 48:00Speaker 1: go get some corn at the Tunbridge World's Fair. With
- 48:09Speaker 1: regard to the weather forecast, concerts in the park every Wednesday.
- 48:18Speaker 1: Not sure if this one will fly tonight. Earthbound Spirits
- 48:23Speaker 1: Trio scheduled to perform Courier Park tonight, I think around
- 48:27Speaker 1: five 30 or so it's supposed to be raining. It's
- 48:32Speaker 1: I'm looking out the window here on North main street,
- 48:35Speaker 1: not raining yet, uh, but it's coming. And if you
- 48:40Speaker 1: take a glance at your weather app, you'll probably see
- 48:43Speaker 1: the green and maybe some yellows, but it's coming. Um,
- 48:49Speaker 1: so I'm, you know, I don't think they've put the
- 48:52Speaker 1: kibosh on it yet, but don't be surprised. Um, But
- 48:57Speaker 1: it's always a good time. Concerts in the park at
- 49:00Speaker 1: Courier Park, the farmer's market, the food trucks. Hopefully, and
- 49:07Speaker 1: it doesn't look promising, but hopefully we'll be able to
- 49:11Speaker 1: get it in. Native Tongue, by the way, next Wednesday,
- 49:17Speaker 1: the 16th. And there's a few more. We got Seth
- 49:21Speaker 1: and Sophie on the 23rd. We got the Messengers on
- 49:24Speaker 1: the 30th. I think that'll be the final one.
- 49:29Speaker 3: Tomorrow.
- 49:30Speaker 1: Is tomorrow run what you brung, Becky? At Thunder Road. Boy,
- 49:39Speaker 1: how about Gray and Corliss, though? What a weekend it was.
- 49:46Speaker 1: Labor Day Classic. Upper Valley, speaking of cars, Upper Valley
- 49:52Speaker 1: Cars and Coffee has their, I just did their Under
- 49:58Speaker 1: the Lights night at the Powerhouse Mall in West Leb,
- 50:02Speaker 1: and it was incredible. Last Friday night, unbelievable. Chris will
- 50:08Speaker 1: tell us. But I think it was right around 300 cars.
- 50:11Speaker 1: It was insane. Insane. Under the lights. Loved it. Every
- 50:16Speaker 1: second of it. Make sure to follow Upper Valley Cars
- 50:19Speaker 1: and Coffee on Facebook. But they've got another car show
- 50:23Speaker 1: coming up on Sunday. And I think there's two more.
- 50:25Speaker 1: I think there's this one. And then the last one
- 50:29Speaker 1: will be in October. But Powerhouse Mall down in West
- 50:34Speaker 1: Leb is where it is. Thank you, Becky. Run what
- 50:39Speaker 1: you brung. I want to know, Becky, if you've ever
- 50:45Speaker 1: thought about running what you're bringing. What else is happening?
- 50:58Speaker 1: Grand Point North on the 18th, taking over the Burlington waterfront.
- 51:08Speaker 1: Until the 20th, three days of live music. Grace Potter,
- 51:14Speaker 1: Jackson Brown. Jackson, by the way, is going to be
- 51:18Speaker 1: performing with his full band on Saturday the 19th. Amazing.
- 51:26Speaker 1: VIP tickets available for every day of the festival. But yeah,
- 51:32Speaker 1: Portugal the Man also going to be playing. It's going
- 51:34Speaker 1: to be crazy. Could be awesome. I know there's some
- 51:43Speaker 1: pretty heavy stuff that is going on in Barrie. Right
- 51:50Speaker 1: here in our little city. Attempted murder. Just one of
- 51:59Speaker 1: the headlines. Um Yeah, there's some pretty heavy stuff that's
- 52:08Speaker 1: going on. And I know that. I've seen it on Facebook,
- 52:13Speaker 1: just like you have. I've shared some of it. There's
- 52:25Speaker 1: also some great things going on. And Deb Phillips from
- 52:30Speaker 1: The World was just listing off some of Stuff going
- 52:34Speaker 1: on at the Granite Museum. There's things going on for
- 52:38Speaker 1: the family. Berry City Elementary School last night did an
- 52:44Speaker 1: amazing thing for our community. Outdoors, bringing our community together,
- 52:55Speaker 1: bringing kids together, having some fun. There's a lot of
- 52:59Speaker 1: great stuff that's going on. I encourage you. to look
- 53:03Speaker 1: beyond the crap. There's always going to be crap. No
- 53:15Speaker 1: matter what town you live in, and I don't give
- 53:17Speaker 1: a damn if it's Shelburne or Burlington or Montpelier, there's
- 53:29Speaker 1: always going to be heavy stuff. There's always going to
- 53:32Speaker 1: be things that are going to happen in your community
- 53:36Speaker 1: where you're going to be thinking, oh my God, I
- 53:39Speaker 1: can't believe that's happening right here where I live in
- 53:42Speaker 1: my backyard. But find the good stuff, man. A lot
- 53:56Speaker 1: of what I've been reading lately on Barry City resident
- 54:01Speaker 1: chat Barry Vermont resident chat. My general consensus of it
- 54:16Speaker 1: is that there's still just a lot of people walking
- 54:21Speaker 1: around with a lot of I guess to sum it up,
- 54:28Speaker 1: just a lot of anger. And Kind of defaulting to that.
- 54:37Speaker 1: And I get it. I get it. But damn, it's
- 54:44Speaker 1: like we all need to just take a deep breath.
- 54:55Speaker 1: I'm just getting a message here about the... flock cameras.
- 55:08Speaker 1: And the concern here in Barry about them, what they are.
- 55:22Speaker 1: And I know that it's not just Billy, but there's
- 55:28Speaker 1: many that are looking for straight answers. and have concerns
- 55:34Speaker 1: about surveillance cameras. And I know that so many of
- 55:42Speaker 1: us have real questions about flock. One of the messages
- 55:54Speaker 1: that I have received, a private message, is something that
- 56:04Speaker 1: made me stop, think. And then I forced myself to
- 56:14Speaker 1: rethink and to try to look at this from a
- 56:19Speaker 1: little higher altitude. How I feel about flock cameras. So
- 56:35Speaker 1: What I did with that was I picked up the
- 56:39Speaker 1: phone and I called our police chief here in Barrie City,
- 56:46Speaker 1: Brad Vail. And we had a rather candid conversation. Short,
- 56:56Speaker 1: but right to the point. And I said, look, you know,
- 57:01Speaker 1: I have my questions and I've just fired off a few.
- 57:05Speaker 1: but the community also has questions. There's a lot of misinformation.
- 57:16Speaker 1: There's a lot of reaction that is coming out of
- 57:22Speaker 1: our community where it's emotional reaction. You know, And I'm
- 57:37Speaker 1: looking at Billy's post here. Flock cameras. Who authorized it?
- 57:43Speaker 1: When was it approved? Who paid for it? When was
- 57:47Speaker 1: it installed? When and how was the public notified? I
- 57:53Speaker 1: think that you're going to be very surprised when you
- 58:02Speaker 1: hear the answers to these questions that I'm going to
- 58:07Speaker 1: ask tomorrow morning, right here, on aired out, to our
- 58:17Speaker 1: police chief. I think he'll be surprised. And I was like,
- 58:24Speaker 1: you know, Chief, real transparency needs to be put out here.
- 58:31Speaker 1: We need to, like, communicate with a lot of people.
- 58:36Speaker 1: Because there are so many keyboard warriors on some of
- 58:42Speaker 1: these resident chat pages. And there's so much emotional reaction
- 58:47Speaker 1: to stuff. It's not just Berry City. I know that.
- 58:54Speaker 1: But man, it's like, the record needs to be set
- 58:58Speaker 1: straight here. Like, what is the deal so that we
- 59:02Speaker 1: can just Stop with the hypothetical hyperbole. and just get
- 59:11Speaker 1: down to the nitty gritty here? Let's just sift through
- 59:15Speaker 1: all the bullshit and tell it like it is. What
- 59:21Speaker 1: is the deal? And it's not just the flock cameras.
- 59:27Speaker 1: It's security cameras. Surveillance cameras. I don't need to tell
- 59:34Speaker 1: you that if you go to New York City and
- 59:39Speaker 1: you pick your nose as you're walking down the street,
- 59:42Speaker 1: you're being watched. You already know that. And I also
- 59:46Speaker 1: know that this ain't New York City. This is Barry, Vermont.
- 59:53Speaker 1: So get your questions and your comments prepared now. This
- 59:59Speaker 1: is your heads up. for tomorrow morning. And let's thank
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: our chief before he even comes in here tomorrow for
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: coming in here, for agreeing to do that. I look
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: forward to the conversation. A little bit of nip in
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: the air. Not bad. Air conditioner is going to be
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: coming out pretty soon at my house. Haven't yet. They're
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: still in there. And we're going to be closing things
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: up here pretty soon. Which is a huge bummer for me.
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: Because I love the heat. I love the summer. And
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: I know that this is bottleneck time. This is the
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: time of year. Oh, my God. The Halloween decorations. And
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: we got to get this.
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: And the.
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: Tunbridge World's Fair is coming up. And blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: Got to get grandma's baking recipes out. Are we ready
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: for the snow? Who's going to plow our driveway this year?
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: When is the first frost going to kill all the tomatoes?
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: If you are in a situation where you're not overly
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: thrilled about where you live. Maybe you're renting. Maybe you're
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: couch surfing. Maybe you're thinking about selling what you have,
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: whatever that may be, and possibly, possibly upgrading to something bigger. Better, cleaner, newer,
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: more spacious, more land, less land, whatever. If you are
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: looking for a new home or even remotely thinking about
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: it and you're worried about timing, well, it's too late now.
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: It's already September. I guess we're stuck here for the winter.
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: I say think again. And obviously, I want to talk
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: about Fecto Homes. I say, yeah, think again. Give them
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: a call. Don't freak out. Don't give up. You want

- 1:03:32Speaker 1: are on. Just walk right in. I know it's kind
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: of weird. It feels like you're walking into somebody's home.
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: But you want to get on their website, have a look,
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: and then stop in. You want a follow-up question? Walk

- 1:04:08Speaker 1: not be aware of. Fecto homes.
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: Thanks, Zach, for the comment about my hat. I don't
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: wear this one often enough. Is it my favorite band?
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: You bet your ass. Have a beautiful rest of your day.
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: I hope it's a positive one. I know I got
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: some catching up to do with you. Had the doctor's
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: appointment yesterday for the new shoulder. The other shoulder. Janie,
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: I thought you already had a shoulder done.
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: Yes!
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: Yes! getting the other one done. All shiny steel, titanium,
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: whatever the hell. I don't care. But I know that Dr.
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: Macy knows what he's doing with new shoulders. Don't care.
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: Put a little bit of plastic in there. Recycle bottles.
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: I don't give a shit as long as we can
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: get rid of the arthritis. So that it's easier for
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: me in the bathroom to put on my coat and
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: my shirt without screaming in agony. That's all I care about. So, yeah,
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: the new shoulder is going in sometime. I don't know.
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: Not September. They're saying maybe November at this point. So
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: I'll be down for a while. All hopped up on narcotics.
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: Trying to push through the pain. Such a wimp.
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: I know.
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: But I'll fill you in on the gory details of that.
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: Appointment yesterday. I'm joking. Come on. G is going to
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: be in here on Friday. And I know that Friday
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: is September 11th. I'm well aware of it. And I
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: have given some great thought to what to do on Friday.
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: There's two options. I can either completely devote the airwaves...
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: to September 11th with all of the pictures and the
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: video and the audio of everything to do with September 11th,
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: which is really heavy stuff. Or I can say it's
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: been 25 years. People know where to see that. They
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: know where to find that. If they want to hear that,
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: experience that, relive that. They know where to go. The
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: other option would be to, of course, talk about it
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: a little bit. I'm going to talk about where I
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: was on September 11th. I would like to, on Friday,
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: hear where you were. And then move through that and
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: beyond that and share a laugh and kick off the weekend.
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: Those are the two options. I ask you what you
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: would like. And I'll do either one on Friday. Thanks, everybody.
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: God bless you.
- 1:08:21Speaker 3: And yes.
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: Just like Becky just said, have a great day. And
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: I think she literally means that. And great is a
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: subjective word. But keep your eyes open. Find the good.
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: Find the positive. Stay well. We'll see you tomorrow morning.
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: Brad Vale. We're talking flock cameras tomorrow. Right here. Where
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: you are now. Central Vermont's podcast aired out.
