- 1:47And welcome back to the Boundary Corner podcast.
- 1:50Along with my partner, Brian Siegler, I am Curtis Wilson.
- 1:53We are part of the college shuttle network.
- 1:55In this episode, as always is brought to you by Doctor Jeremy
- 1:58Counts down at Counts Family Pharmacy Three O 1 S Main St.,
- 2:03Blacksburg, VA Counts Family Pharmacy your friendly
- 2:06neighborhood pharmacy buddy. What's up, man?
- 2:11Man, I'm tired dude. I'm just going just straight up
- 2:13saying I'm tired right now. You got the grind before the
- 2:18cruise you. Hit the hit before the cruise
- 2:21works and doing doing a training at work this week man like right
- 2:27up to the last second before the cruise getting everything ready
- 2:30for the cruise. Birthday parties, kid, my kids
- 2:34birthday party, neighbors kids birthday party, baseball.
- 2:39I know you got stuff going on too.
- 2:42Yeah, man, it's, it's been a busy week.
- 2:46Been a bit busy last few weeks trying to get some, some stuff
- 2:49checked off at work, trying to get some, you know, busy with
- 2:53the sun's got, you know, sports going on now.
- 2:57We're we're kind of ramping up for, you know, spring ball now.
- 3:02So it's, you know, we, we've had some other side discussions and
- 3:05stuff like that on, on that topic.
- 3:07So I mean, it's been a, it's been a busy time.
- 3:10Excited to finally get back together here on Air.
- 3:13Air it out a little bit. Air it out back, back to the
- 3:17back to the dynamic. Duo yeah, we are.
- 3:22We are missing Tally tonight. He's got a lot going on in on
- 3:27his plate too, so. Baseball kids.
- 3:30Work we, we, we couldn't get a night where all of us could get
- 3:33on. So we, we're like, if we don't
- 3:35pull the trigger now, we're might not, might not get another
- 3:37one in before before the spring game.
- 3:40So 100. Percent.
- 3:42Here we are. Yeah, Shelton on hiatus.
- 3:45Hiatus. Our our buddy coach Robbie
- 3:49Compton heading to Chalk Talk in less than 48 hours.
- 3:52We might have to convince him to come on when we get back.
- 3:56I think so. Josh, what am I sipping on
- 3:59tonight? Tonight I am sipping on Scotch.
- 4:04You know what Scotch it is, right Ron?
- 4:08In the bar downstairs. Is it the blended?
- 4:11No. No, no, it's the Kirkland.
- 4:13It is Costco Scotch, all right. For those who may live in South
- 4:17Carolina or Maryland, go to Costco, get you a bottle, the
- 4:21black Label Kirkland Scotch. My, my neighbor Andrew down the
- 4:24street recommended it years ago. Basically it's a Johnnie Walker
- 4:28Black and it's like 50 bucks for a handle.
- 4:32We drink it. Brian's had it.
- 4:34He knows it's good. Oh yeah.
- 4:37You know we're. Hey, it's it's it's cheap, but
- 4:41it's. Not cheap.
- 4:43It's it's it's. Cheap for what it is.
- 4:47There you go. It's cheap for what it is
- 4:50exactly and by the way, Brian, the vodka we had last summer.
- 4:56Yep, what 12 bucks for a handle and it was legitimately a hyper
- 5:03in yes, we'd love for Scotts go to sponsor our show Josh.
- 5:07I would, I would love that they could come right along with
- 5:09Jeremy, you know? That's right.
- 5:11I mean, you know, give me a free membership and a hot dog anytime
- 5:14I want it. Even though it's only $1.50,
- 5:16I'll, I'll save that buck 50 and we'll.
- 5:18Call them, they could. They could get probably
- 5:21everybody in this program, they gave us all one definitely.
- 5:24We can definitely pull the trigger.
- 5:25Yeah. Is there is there like a like a
- 5:27Costco black card or something that I can get?
- 5:31Exactly. Yeah, but like Brian said, we're
- 5:33doing this tonight because we needed to punch it before we we
- 5:38are not here next week. We likely are going to be able
- 5:42to do a spring show. Literally.
- 5:43We're going to be hanging out on a cruise all week together.
- 5:45We're probably going to be writing the show line by line.
- 5:49And the the GoPro is coming with me, so I might, I might sprinkle
- 5:52in some some some live footage next week next.
- 5:56Time we watch. I don't know if we need that.
- 5:58Man depends, depends on what it's going to be and, and, and
- 6:01what we say and what we do. We'll see if we'll see if it's
- 6:04quality. We'll see if it's, you know, I
- 6:07mean, we're not, we're not necessarily safe for work here.
- 6:09But you know, it's a cruise. So I mean, she can get wild.
- 6:15Yeah, 50 is cheap for a handle, Robbie, but let's break it down.
- 6:19What are we doing tonight? Well, we had not truly talked
- 6:23about the complete makeup of the staff.
- 6:25We had French on just the just a couple weeks ago to go through
- 6:29kind of the new scheme, what we were expecting.
- 6:32But we never had that chance to talk about what does new, new
- 6:34staff look like. We talked about some of the
- 6:36hires here and there, but what are our takes on it?
- 6:40And we wanted to break into that tonight.
- 6:42Then we wanted to break into obviously what came out a little
- 6:45earlier this week with basically the new roster, the new height
- 6:50weight measurements, seeing all that.
- 6:52We've also seen some tapes shout out Kobe, Andy, David put them
- 6:57out there, some takes from what's going on inside practice.
- 7:01Couple things that piqued our interest.
- 7:03But we're going to unload just quite a few things tonight.
- 7:06And Brian, let's let's just start over all with the staff
- 7:09changes. I want to start on defense
- 7:12because that's the first one we did.
- 7:14Everybody knows we've hired Sam Cephas as the defensive
- 7:17coordinator. As of right now, what is it
- 7:21March 25th? March 26th. 2025 year of our
- 7:27Lord, this is how the staff shakes out and stance.
- 7:31Keithus does not have a position pilot.
- 7:33He is defensive coordinator. What we expect to be a walking
- 7:37around defensive coordinator. Now let's go real quick and just
- 7:40hit the rest of the staff and talk about some things.
- 7:42JC Price still here, associate head coach, defensive line
- 7:46coach. Derek Jones, Cheetah still at
- 7:48corners. Pearson Prelude, still the
- 7:51safeties coach. Sean Quinn is now the outside
- 7:54linebackers coach. Xavier ADBX to the Z Call him X,
- 8:01however you refer. He is now the inside linebacker
- 8:03coach with the two new hires. Jerry Wilson, who came up from
- 8:08Georgia Southern, I believe he was Georgia Southern.
- 8:11I have to pull my notes on him real quick.
- 8:14Who played under Sam Cifcas as a defensive lineman down at
- 8:18Wofford is the edges coach. Brian Whitehead, a coach defense
- 8:22with Steve Kiss down at Wofford is the Nichols coach.
- 8:26And obviously if you look at the chart there are a plethora of
- 8:31just defensive assistants laying all around.
- 8:34You know JGW safeties you're looking at the vault Smith
- 8:40cornerbacks, Jensen Johnson junior D line.
- 8:45So a plethora of assistant coaches on here.
- 8:49Brian, I want to ask you this first.
- 8:52When everything finally came down, I think me and you've been
- 8:56speculating, were you shocked that there were no additional
- 9:00movement on the defensive staff? Everybody who was here, with the
- 9:04exception of Chris Marv, is still here.
- 9:10I think so if I'm, if I'm circling a spot on the field
- 9:14that I'm surprised that this person still is coaching that
- 9:19unit given what we know about Cephas, given what we know about
- 9:24what he's bringing to a table from a role that the safeties
- 9:29play in the defense. I was expecting someone
- 9:34different at that spot. And that's not to say that
- 9:38Pearson can't get it done, but I think a combination of, you
- 9:42know, having less prior experience, not being the best
- 9:46unit last year, doing something different with the safety unit
- 9:49this year. I thought that was going to be a
- 9:51prime time to him transition back into more of a not
- 9:56necessarily off the field roll, but a more behind the scenes
- 9:59role in this in the staff. And we didn't see it.
- 10:04And and that's not to say it's something to be, you know, to
- 10:07Josh's point here, something to be concerned about.
- 10:12I'm interested to see, you know, Sam is going to be a walk around
- 10:17DC, but is he going to spend a, a, a healthy majority of that
- 10:23time working with the safeties? And I know he's a guy that he's
- 10:29coached linebackers, he's coached safeties.
- 10:31I mean, he's got the he's got the understanding, I think to,
- 10:36you know, inform those position groups to to a healthy degree.
- 10:42But that's definitely the probably the most interesting
- 10:44position because I think it's the one we expected to see
- 10:46movement in. And when you look at a guy like
- 10:49Jerry Wilson, who is coming in to coach edges, played edge, but
- 10:55also was a primarily a, a safeties coach during his his
- 11:01coaching tenure. I think that's where we saw is
- 11:04he, is he the guy or is he going to be kind of another guy in
- 11:07that room? And, and ultimately that's
- 11:09that's not where it went. It's really interesting because
- 11:16The thing is a lot of people are saying, well, you feel perceived
- 11:19because it's not his staff, but then you start looking around
- 11:22and well, AI don't think he would have let JC Price go.
- 11:27I'm I'm just going to be for real.
- 11:29In my opinion, there are three guys he would not have let go on
- 11:31the staff. JC Price is one of them,
- 11:33Xavier's one of them, and Quinn's one of them.
- 11:36If you had told me Cheetah was let go or Pearson moved to a
- 11:40different role, I would not have been shot.
- 11:43But I kind of sit here back and think about it.
- 11:46We're at a day and age where this can be done.
- 11:51Because let's think about it. We now can do unlimited coaches,
- 11:55right? You have unlimited amount of
- 11:56coaches. So if you're going to be
- 11:59transitioning, why go ahead and RIP everything out when likely
- 12:04what you could do is make it a one to two year transition?
- 12:08Think. Think about that.
- 12:09What's up Will? What's going on, Will?
- 12:12But think about that, Brian. You're trying to make everything
- 12:16smooth. Guys like Bam trying to learn
- 12:20the team if you get everybody in place.
- 12:23And again, X being with the linebackers last year, getting
- 12:26to know the players quicker, getting to know their
- 12:28attributes, getting to know their weaknesses, their
- 12:30strengths. He's not relying on all new
- 12:32eyes, even in the safeties room, right, even the corner room.
- 12:39So I think that's why this was done.
- 12:41I'm going to have a question in a little while concerning
- 12:44recruiting. Let's see is edge not really
- 12:51outside linebacker now? And well, that's the question,
- 12:55Robbie that we're going to probably be asking up to the
- 12:57spring game is like, for example, is there going to be a
- 13:04could there be, Brian, you go back to what we talked about
- 13:07with French and just kind of looking at it yourself, could
- 13:10edges be guys playing the five tech not playing outside that
- 13:15and that's more outside linebacker responsibility if we
- 13:18go to a three man front. I mean, I know we're going to
- 13:24get to it, but the stuff we've we've seen, I'm I'm seeing a
- 13:27whole lot of kind of 24 fronts, 2 down, 4 linebacker.
- 13:36You know, you got you got an edge.
- 13:37It's that that stand up that's really almost like a you play in
- 13:42a lot of ways, like a three man front outside linebacker.
- 13:48It's it's going to be interesting to see, I mean,
- 13:52Prize said. It's going to be a multiple
- 13:53defense. I expect to be a multiple
- 13:55defense. You know, you've got you got a
- 13:59lot of positional, I think fluidity there because you're
- 14:01going to have guys that are playing the edge that are going
- 14:08to you kind of be lining up in different positions depending on
- 14:13what the what the front call is, whether it's more of a, you
- 14:18know, odd front for in those nickel packages.
- 14:20But I think remains to be seen and how that impacts, you know,
- 14:27who's coming off the field more than likely a defensive lineman
- 14:29in that case, But you know, maybe not.
- 14:32We'll, I guess we'll see as as things progress and we start to
- 14:37get some more tape on what. Yeah.
- 14:40What what, what defense is there in alignment in outside of base,
- 14:44which seems to be a a 245 alignment if from everything
- 14:48we've seen so far. Yeah.
- 14:50The other thing, and I don't know if this was a shot, but.
- 14:55I, I I. I think it's a big vote of
- 14:57confidence that Xavier is moved to an inside linebacker role.
- 15:03That is his position. That is the position he played
- 15:06in College in the NFL as the position he's coached.
- 15:10I, I, I think in a lot of people say, well, that could be pride
- 15:12pushing it. I do believe that if Seekest did
- 15:16not believe he could coach position, I think he would have
- 15:18said he needs to say assistant and we would have seen Quinn
- 15:21move over. I, I think that might have been
- 15:25my biggest shock was he is the inside linebacker coach.
- 15:29He is going to be coaching. Woodson is going to be Woodson
- 15:32Keller platter ball and I know I'm missing a couple guys names
- 15:36right now at the top of my head, but he is going to be those
- 15:39primary guys coaches and I like that because it's it's basically
- 15:43two guys and sometimes one if we go to a three high look.
- 15:46Yeah, let me ask this. So we got and I mean, I know I
- 15:50think the even in in the new like meeting rooms, like they've
- 15:54got the positions on there, but now we got these like different
- 16:00position groups, right. So we got Quinn is outside
- 16:03linebacker, X is inside linebacker.
- 16:05Are they running a linebacker media session together?
- 16:10Are they splitting that up? I'm, I'm trying to think about
- 16:13when, when you're having a, a film session with your group,
- 16:20are we looking at, at, at splitting that out into a
- 16:22smaller group? Or are we looking at Quinn and X
- 16:26are going to be in that room pretty much running the
- 16:28linebacker group as a combination.
- 16:32They've got these titles attached to them, but they for
- 16:35for better or worse, are the linebacker and Co linebacker or
- 16:40assistant linebacker coach or whatever the hell you want to
- 16:42call it here. Those two are the are coaching
- 16:44the linebackers and then you know, you've got jury with
- 16:51edges. I'm guessing he's going to be in
- 16:54there with JC, but maybe not. Is he going to be in there with
- 17:02Quinn and XII? Think that's that's where my
- 17:05head goes when I'm looking at this.
- 17:08Like I think it's pretty safe to say, you know, you're going to
- 17:12put Whitehead in there with with Pearson.
- 17:16I think there's a there's a good amount of overlap there in terms
- 17:19of what you're looking at on tape.
- 17:20Obviously, you know, Nichols going to have some, you know,
- 17:23some cornerback responsibilities as well and you know, a lot, a
- 17:26lot of coverage related aspects, but it's, it's really going to
- 17:28be like having an extra safety and and that's really where you
- 17:33know, where where it makes sense for me.
- 17:36But I, I'm interested from a just, you know, schematically
- 17:40how this is going to be handled because I'm not sure exactly
- 17:46what I feel like the roles have been defined well here, but I
- 17:51just don't know because because of how much positional
- 17:55flexibility there is. I, I, I'm not sure exactly how,
- 17:58how they're planning on, you know, dividing up those, those
- 18:03smaller group off the field coaching sessions.
- 18:08Well, yeah, because like you said, edges could be in the loud
- 18:11JC, but or could outside linebacker edges in defensive
- 18:15line be all in the same room together?
- 18:17And if Zach's going to have his group together and then you're
- 18:19going to have Quinn and Jerry Wilson, you know, with their
- 18:23groups together. And is it going to be a mix and
- 18:25match depending on what the the specific install is for that
- 18:30week? Exactly.
- 18:32But then think about this. You go to this.
- 18:33Whatever it is. Well, you go to the three high
- 18:35safety look, and I know you're going to you, you, you correct
- 18:38me on this, but there are times the a certain position, the
- 18:44certain safety that is the closer to the box and you and
- 18:47you seen the alignment. It's almost like they're an
- 18:50outside linebacker, right? They're almost playing that the
- 18:53old star position, the old whip position.
- 18:56Could they be going in the linebacker room doing cross
- 19:00training because of where they're aligned?
- 19:02It's like they're not really doing safety stuff.
- 19:05It's they're doing, it's the combination of doing linebacker
- 19:09and safety responsibility, right?
- 19:11Are they going to go in there? Could we have rooms overlapping
- 19:14a ton? Yeah.
- 19:15And I mean, we had some of that in the system last year, but I
- 19:20think the the lines have been blurred a lot more, not only
- 19:25with the way they're handling the staff, the way that we have
- 19:29recruited, especially in the portal this last year as well.
- 19:33There's a lot of a lot of position fluidity.
- 19:37I know, you know, Coach Prize always preached having
- 19:41positional fluidity and being able to play at multiple
- 19:45positions and, and things of that nature.
- 19:48And I think it, it's not so much that this guy can be this and
- 19:53this. I think we we have a lot of guys
- 19:55that it works in our favor for them to be kind of hybrids
- 20:00because there's certain positions that at least if not
- 20:04historically, certainly recently that we've had trouble
- 20:07recruiting. Yes.
- 20:10And I think this gives us a little bit of an advantage from
- 20:14that standpoint because we can bring in highly rated tweeners
- 20:18all fucking day. Yes, we can.
- 20:22We've struggled at bringing in the true Mike.
- 20:25We, we, we've struggled at bringing in that true nose that
- 20:29can be dominant. Yeah.
- 20:32We've struggled at bringing in a a safety that can really bring
- 20:40the damn hammer. Yeah.
- 20:42While still being able to cover and, and this gives us, you
- 20:46know, some of that flexibility I think to to kind of fit fill in
- 20:49those gaps a little bit. So that that is kind of what got
- 20:55to happen. And I mean, we're going to talk
- 20:57about that in a few minutes, but let's get back to what you were
- 20:59mentioning in a few minutes ago from the alignments videos we've
- 21:03seen. And again, these are short
- 21:06clips. It's not everything.
- 21:07And it's what effectively the coaching staff wants the media
- 21:12and the public to see in your head right now what we're going
- 21:18to see not only spring game, but about six months from now.
- 21:22If I actually take that back five months from now, because
- 21:25it's basically April, are we looking at A24 front?
- 21:35Yeah, I mean it, I think that's going to be your base package is
- 21:38going to be a 24. Where could could you tell in
- 21:43that one clip? I think Colby had it.
- 21:45Where are the defensive lineman? What techniques are they?
- 21:48From what you could see, and I know it was that weird side
- 21:50angle, but what technique were they at?
- 21:55I mean, it looked like a three and probably, probably A1 or
- 22:00A2I, more than likely A2I. I'd have to look at the clip
- 22:11again to confirm. But I don't think a ton is going
- 22:15to change at least in the base alignment from what we were
- 22:20doing last year On the inside. I think, I think everything is
- 22:24going to get interesting is how are those, how are those 22
- 22:34edges are going? How are they going to be
- 22:35deployed? And then when you, when you
- 22:39switch up the the front to an odd front, what does that look
- 22:42like? Curtis, are you talking because
- 23:00you're on mute? I'm running my mouth like crazy
- 23:04over here. What I was going to say is what
- 23:06I was saying is with the interior defensive line, you
- 23:10know, we've always had that one attacking, usually quick twitch.
- 23:13That's the neatest people's last year acting upfield.
- 23:17Do you think we see a difference this year or do you think it's
- 23:21more of we're going to see the same with there may be times
- 23:24where it's not attacking because from what French told us, from
- 23:28what we've seen, is that defensive line is to eat up
- 23:32blockers to stop guys getting to the second level so the
- 23:35linebackers and safeties can pounce.
- 23:41I'm interested to see what it's going to look like, you know,
- 23:45based based on what he was saying in the tape he watched
- 23:48and, and on most of the tape he was watching was odd front as
- 23:52the base. So we're we're kind of in
- 23:55uncharted territory where I don't know if it's going to be
- 23:59kind of a blend of kind of what Seifkis has done in other spots
- 24:06and what JC and others on this line have taught historically
- 24:13and kind of a a blend of that. Or if there's going to be, yeah,
- 24:17very much Seifka's footprint across the whole thing out the
- 24:21gate here. From what Seifkas has said it,
- 24:24it sounds like he's going to be very adaptable not only to the
- 24:28strengths of the roster, but also the strengths of the staff.
- 24:33Yes, he he did say that with the Damon down with the Roanoke
- 24:37time. So the only thing we can do is
- 24:40we can now sit and watch. Obviously, you know, having
- 24:46someone going to these clinics, you know, we'll be definitely
- 24:48picking his brain and then, you know, we're we're right around
- 24:50the corner from the spring game and seeing it in person.
- 24:53So it will be interesting. Right.
- 24:55Let's look to the offensive side of the ball.
- 24:59We're going, we're going. We're going to touch on that
- 25:00here in a little bit, Josh. Yeah, we will be touching on
- 25:03that when it comes to looking at some gains.
- 25:06But let's talk about the offense.
- 25:08Obviously Philip Montgomery offensive coordinator currently
- 25:10as of today March 26th, not titled with a specific specific
- 25:17room. Matt Moore obviously offensive
- 25:19line fine tale minds the assistant head coach, wide
- 25:22receivers. Brooks still the running back.
- 25:25Brian Crist is now the Co quarterback coach.
- 25:27I think it was the assistant quarterback coach.
- 25:30Brent Davis getting moved to tight end.
- 25:32Stu Holt, now officially the special teams coordinator as an
- 25:37offensive assistant. Again, boatload of assistants,
- 25:41including Montgomery's son Cannon, who's going to be an
- 25:45assistant running backs coach. And let's talk about the staff
- 25:53for a second. First, I think this is what we
- 25:57expected. Probably.
- 26:00Maybe even if Tyler Bowen had stayed.
- 26:04Yeah, I think this this is kind of where things were moving
- 26:08regardless of who the ultimate offensive coordinator was going
- 26:11to be. I think you've set yourself up
- 26:15in a better spot with Montgomery because So I'll say two things
- 26:20here. When you look at Chris title,
- 26:25he's still Co quarterback coach. So while Phillip Montgomery does
- 26:31not have a official position attached to his name, he is the
- 26:37de facto quarterback coach here. Because, I mean, otherwise you
- 26:42would call Chris the quarterback coach just like they called X
- 26:46the inside linebacker coach or, you know what, whatever.
- 26:48On the other side of the ball, he would have been given some
- 26:51sort of full, full range of that title.
- 26:55Yes. So that's denoting that
- 26:57Montgomery is if, if not going to be exclusively in the
- 27:01quarterback room, is going to be primarily in the quarterback
- 27:04room. Yeah, 100% on that.
- 27:08And what what about the Stu Holt move do you like now, huh?
- 27:14We I mean I was calling for it all last.
- 27:16Year, so we we call it last year, but they did it.
- 27:19Yeah, they did. It they did it.
- 27:20They did it and now effectively Virginia Tech in some essence
- 27:25has a pseudo NFL model. Yeah.
- 27:30And I think, you know, when you look at, when you look at
- 27:32Montgomery's scheme, Brent Davis at tight end makes a lot of
- 27:38sense here because there's not going to be a ton of tight end
- 27:42usage in the passing game. It's going to be a lot more
- 27:46blocking focused. So Chris, Chris having that
- 27:49title, I think is going to be I think a good thing for the tight
- 27:53end production standpoint from A at least from a run game
- 27:57perspective. And I think that's that's, you
- 28:02know, potentially good news for wide receivers as well, because
- 28:04there's going to be more opportunities for them to get
- 28:07involved in the passing game. All right.
- 28:11No, let me flip to that. What do you think this offense
- 28:14is going to look like right now? Like is this going to be I?
- 28:20I don't think this is full Baylor 2011.
- 28:24Let's just go with that. But where do you think it's
- 28:27landing? Because and everybody keeps
- 28:29screaming Auburn, Auburn, Auburn.
- 28:30But as Tally told us, he won't run in his offense at all.
- 28:34Yeah. I mean, I think it's going to be
- 28:37a version of what we saw at Baylor.
- 28:39I think it's going to be there's going to be some tweaks to that.
- 28:43I think the thing that stood out to me and I mean it was
- 28:46reflected some at least let let let's talk about this.
- 28:49When we when we talk about Auburn, I don't think I think
- 28:52that the fingerprints of I think the fingerprints were not his on
- 29:05the offense from a scheme standpoint.
- 29:08But when we look at the pace of play and I think he's talked
- 29:12about this, he's like, you know, I know that sometimes you got to
- 29:17have a first and a second gear. You can't go, you know, you
- 29:22can't be in fourth and 5th the whole game.
- 29:25Sometimes you got to have you got to be in first and second.
- 29:27You got to throttle it down. You got to be able to understand
- 29:31the situation of the game and, and react to that.
- 29:35And if you look at the splits on the number of plays at Auburn,
- 29:40he's still above, way above the NFL average, but it was his
- 29:45lowest, you know, per play average of his career.
- 29:50I think that is indicative of probably what we're going to see
- 29:54here. Again, you're you're still
- 29:55talking about someone else's fingerprints being on the
- 29:58offense from a scheme standpoint.
- 30:00And that probably hindered the output.
- 30:02But I think from a pace of play standpoint, you can expect
- 30:07something similar from Auburn's side of the coin there, but a
- 30:11lot more from a schematic standpoint of what we saw at
- 30:16Baylor. I got you, got you, got you.
- 30:21Let's put this guy up here because it has done a while
- 30:24Jason, since SWVA has checked in.
- 30:27Hope you guys are doing well down there and I don't know, put
- 30:31this up for Robbie. I do.
- 30:33You aren't correct in that sense, but could I know God's
- 30:39nails? Not your perfect split out wide
- 30:41tight end, but he does have a decent set of hands, so maybe
- 30:45he's still involved in other aspects.
- 30:48Let me ask this, Brian, I think I mentioned this maybe six weeks
- 30:51ago, but you've been watching more tape.
- 30:53What excites you most about like the concepts of what you, I
- 31:01mean, you've, you've you've looked at Baylor, you've looked
- 31:02at Tulsa. I'm not sure if you've got Josh
- 31:05mentioning, talking about looking at the Birmingham UFL
- 31:08stuff. But when you see this and know
- 31:11some of the players we have, you know, you got, you know, guys
- 31:13like Donovan Green, Aiden Green, you've got Cam Selden coming and
- 31:18we'll talk about him a little bit later as well.
- 31:20He was mentioned in one of prize pressors pressors this week.
- 31:26What excites you most? About Like when you see that and
- 31:29you start picking like, man, that, that's this, that's this.
- 31:33You start connecting all the dots.
- 31:34What excites you most? I mean honestly, you just
- 31:38mentioned his name. Cam Selden excites me and I
- 31:40think looking at what what he could be in this offense excites
- 31:48me. Having that gadget style player
- 31:53got in the slot that much like Jay Lane plays it like a running
- 31:57back because I mean, Selden was a fucking running back and and
- 32:01Lane had that mentality of a running back mentality from the
- 32:04slot receiver position. And this is this is a scheme
- 32:08that I think is going to get the slot a lot more involved than I
- 32:11think we saw last year. When we look back to, to kind of
- 32:152023 compared to 2024, you know, we saw Jay Lane line up outside
- 32:21a whole lot more in 2023 and that's where he made his hay.
- 32:26And I think some of the, just the scheme and the, and the, and
- 32:32the calls kind of limited, you know what we were looking at.
- 32:37So I think Lane's production was limited.
- 32:40I think in Monty's system, the the slot receiver is going to
- 32:44have a big opportunity to eat and do a lot of things in space
- 32:48and and have that running back mentality, but still less of
- 32:52that stuff that is behind the line of scrimmage, which we saw
- 32:56a ton of in Tyler Bowen system. So you're not going to see the
- 32:59jet sweeps, you're not going to see those as many screens to the
- 33:02slot, but you will see the ball quickly in the slots, hands
- 33:07three to five yards, 3 to 8 yards down, down field and let
- 33:11him do what he does best. Perfect, Brian.
- 33:14And again, we look more forward to just seeing the tape as we
- 33:18start getting it. All right, let's kind of get
- 33:20ready to close this segment out and and all y'all listening out
- 33:25there putting on the comments in the chat.
- 33:27We appreciate that as always. So you tell me because the way
- 33:32it looks, we've got an NFL style system, coordinators likely not
- 33:35going to recruit Brett Pry and which 10 assistants are you
- 33:40putting on the road? And if y'all want to put in the
- 33:42chat your 10, go for it. So, Brian, I'll give you the
- 33:45floor first. All right, so you got Pry, you
- 33:48got JC, you got Cheetah. I think Quinn, obviously, he's
- 33:54the road dog man. He's the road dog breaking
- 33:57bread, hokey style. He's got it.
- 33:58He's got to be on the road and you know that.
- 34:04Then it comes down to are you sending Pearson, you send an XI
- 34:09think I think I'm sending X on the on the off, on the defensive
- 34:15side of the ball, you know, flipping it over to offense,
- 34:18obviously Fontelle, Matt Moore, Elijah Brooks.
- 34:26And so it kind of comes down to. You you you only name 4 on
- 34:30defense Brian you technically get.
- 34:32Plus pry plus pry. No, no, no, Pratt, you get.
- 34:36It's 11 total. 11 total. 11 total.
- 34:42Yeah. Yeah, it makes yeah.
- 34:46Do I want to send Gimme Wilson? OK.
- 34:55And other side of the ball, I think that that makes it pretty
- 34:58easy. I mean Fontelle, Matt, Elijah,
- 35:02Crist and and and Brent. All right, I am on board with
- 35:08you completely on the offense. I think Stew Holt will get to
- 35:10just hang out, scheme special teams up all week, help out
- 35:16Montgomery as the assistant defense.
- 35:19I'm one different. I think Prelude's going to stay
- 35:22one more year because I think it's going to be the transition
- 35:24year. And again, prize always talking
- 35:27about let's build the relationship.
- 35:29I don't think they'll just pull Pearson off for this class,
- 35:34maybe not even next class, but they're going to start working
- 35:38in maybe Wilson, maybe Wyatt. I don't know their backgrounds
- 35:43well enough. I know the ages.
- 35:45Wilson is a significantly younger guy, so that usually
- 35:50always transitions to you feel like more relatability to the
- 35:54players on the road. But I think Pearson's going to
- 35:58stay there this year. And The funny thing is that
- 36:02question has not been asked, and I thought someone would have
- 36:05asked it at least once. We hired Monty.
- 36:09Now, by all means, could Montgomery be a road recruiter?
- 36:12Yeah, he could. And they leave Brian, Chris at
- 36:15home. But I think the focus this year
- 36:18is we've got to get the scheme right.
- 36:20We've got to get the players right on campus.
- 36:23Why not keep your coordinators off the road during the
- 36:26weekdays? Not worrying about the
- 36:28recruiting trail, just focusing on that.
- 36:30So. And I know that that's been a
- 36:33model that a lot of big schools have kind of moved towards is
- 36:37kind of moving away from a full time recruiting coordinator and
- 36:41more to I'm the scheme guru. I'm the closer because I'm the
- 36:46guy that can best illustrate how players will fit into a scheme
- 36:53and where they could shine, where you can highlight their
- 36:56talents, things of that nature. But that's not necessarily the
- 37:00guy that you need in the living room.
- 37:01That's a guy that, you know, once you get a guy, he's on
- 37:05campus, you know, he, he, you know, you go see him at a camp,
- 37:08you know, whatever it may be, you can kind of close the deal
- 37:11there. But I'm excited about to just to
- 37:16see how. And, and I'm with you, Curtis,
- 37:20because I'm, I'm, I'm shocked that the question hadn't been
- 37:23asked yet because I feel like that's a, a big piece of the
- 37:26puzzle that, you know, we just don't know yet.
- 37:29And I mean, and it took a while for the staff to shake out.
- 37:32So I don't know if it's something that's going to come
- 37:34in due time or, or what. But again, I'm shocked it hasn't
- 37:38really been a question that was at the forefront of folks mind
- 37:41when they were talking to Pride. Yeah, and again, I think some
- 37:44people look at it just so much, like right on top of what are
- 37:48they going to do while they're here?
- 37:49And it's like, well, there's a bigger game and I don't know,
- 37:52high school is not what it was, you know, even five years ago
- 37:55with the portal. But you still, even with the
- 37:58portal visits, there is still a chance to go in home or go to
- 38:02other schools. Effectively, if you're not one
- 38:06of the staff members that are been assigned to the road
- 38:09recruiting, the only place you can recruit is an on campus in
- 38:11Blacksburg. You cannot recruit elsewhere.
- 38:14So throw this up here, Robbie, right, kind of in line with us,
- 38:22with me, I should say. But it's going to be interesting
- 38:25to see how that goes and and do you, do you like to structure
- 38:27overall it seems like you do. Yeah, I mean, there, there's,
- 38:32there's a little bit of nebulous there between like Quinn and
- 38:38Wilson as far as and, and maybe even Whitehead as far as who's
- 38:42coaching what like, you know, and, and we've kind of talked
- 38:47about that a little bit already tonight.
- 38:49But I think from an overall structure standpoint, I think, I
- 38:53think it's a good staff. I think they, they tweaked what
- 38:56they needed to tweak. I, I, I'm the only thing I'm,
- 38:59you know, concerned about, I think is going to be do we have
- 39:04the guys on staff now that can get the safeties where they need
- 39:08to be in those three high looks? Yep, 100% right.
- 39:14So there that is kind of taking a we have been 10,000 feet kind
- 39:18of getting more on what this staff looks like for this
- 39:23upcoming season. Again, so many things to shake
- 39:26out between now and August and that first came down in Atlanta.
- 39:30So it is going to be interesting to see.
- 39:32So let's keep moving and let's get to the roster updates where
- 39:36I mean, it's it's that time of year, right, Brian, height,
- 39:38weight, height, weight. Look, what's the New Jersey
- 39:41numbers whose body looks different when you see them in
- 39:43pictures? So we're going to go through
- 39:46that. We're going to do it just a
- 39:46little bit different and we're going to kind of go through the
- 39:52guys who were here before and we're going to then talk about
- 39:57the transfers in general coming in and kind of what they're
- 40:00looking like. But Brian, let's talk about the
- 40:02guys who were here before. Let's start with the cornerback
- 40:04room. As you kind of look through the
- 40:05big list there of the guys returning, who jumps off the
- 40:09page to you. Seeing Dante Lovett hit that two
- 40:13bill Mark definitely had jumped out at me pretty quick.
- 40:18Yeah, he was 190 last year. So a full 10 LB gain.
- 40:21And what do you think that just says about his body type now and
- 40:26what you saw in the field and now him within extra pounds?
- 40:31I mean, I think it's identifying, you know, a
- 40:33weakness that may he may have had in addressing that.
- 40:36I think, you know, he's a guy that I think needed a little bit
- 40:41of extra, extra muscle, especially in those, you know,
- 40:45press situations. I think he's going to be asked
- 40:48to do a little bit more tackling and seek this system versus MARV
- 40:57system. So I think there it's a
- 40:59combination of those things. Knowing he had to get his body
- 41:01right for that, and knowing that just from a pure coverage
- 41:04standpoint, yeah, he he could probably use a little bit more
- 41:07strength, you know, handling guys up front.
- 41:12Yeah, it's true. Then again, he was 190 last
- 41:14year. You know who jumped out of me?
- 41:16Besides, I love it. Who's that?
- 41:18Thomas Williams went from 180 to 190 or 189, but again, 10 lbs
- 41:24up, he saw significant action last year out there.
- 41:28So I, I like the look of that. Josh Clark, I'd I'd like to see
- 41:35him get a little bit more. 185 is not bad.
- 41:39But again, as we talked before we join tonight.
- 41:43And Brian, how much weight did you lose during the season, give
- 41:47or take? Usually about 8 to 10 lbs so.
- 41:53That's one reason when you look about where a guy's starting
- 41:56from, why is it important? Well, in in your and you're not
- 41:59losing just weight, you're losing muscle because of how
- 42:03hard you're working, how hard you're playing, how much you're
- 42:06practicing. So I wish I would have seen Josh
- 42:10Clark up to 190, but that is what it is.
- 42:14I will say this, I don't know if this jumped out at me, but it
- 42:17was just kind of like Deloach, Deloach give in the words of
- 42:22Tally, get that man some food, get him steak, get him some
- 42:26chicken, give him give him anything you can get some weight
- 42:31on DeMar Jamario Deloach because I mean, he has talent in.
- 42:38Yeah. 165 you ain't you ain't playing much.
- 42:41Yeah. I mean, I think he's going to
- 42:43need, he's going to need to see about another 10 lbs before you
- 42:45start working him into the rotation there.
- 42:48He needs at least be up there in in in Christian Williams range
- 42:52there. I know it probably is it isn't
- 42:55much difference with with Williams there at six one versus
- 43:00Deloach at 5-10. But as far as frame is
- 43:04concerned. But yeah, you'd like to see him
- 43:07at least be up there in that one 175 range before you start
- 43:11trying to work him in pretty, pretty heavily there.
- 43:14And I mean, looking at this, this unit, I mean, we went from
- 43:17a very senior and junior laden unit to, you know, a lot, a lot,
- 43:25a lot of red shirts, sophomores, freshmen, a couple juniors, you
- 43:32know, no, no senior leadership in that room.
- 43:34I think that's going to be, that's going to be a big, a big
- 43:38role that I think Dante Lovett is going to have to step into as
- 43:42being the leader of that unit from a both a experience
- 43:46standpoint and just a, a, a seniority standpoint as well.
- 43:50Yeah, 100%. So there's the cornerback room.
- 43:53I, this is always the fun room. There are two fun rooms to do
- 43:56when you're doing 3 technically, because I consider linebacker.
- 44:00But let's look at defensive line room.
- 44:02Brian, let's let's go down there.
- 44:04And you know, this came out a few days ago.
- 44:06You looked at it, you digested it, but of the guys on the
- 44:10defensive line, whether inside or out, when you started
- 44:14looking, where did you go? Whoa, whoa.
- 44:22You know, I mean, I went a couple different places.
- 44:29Emmett Laws is the one that jumped out to me in the most.
- 44:34Thank you. And you know, I, I, I, I feel,
- 44:37you know, we've, we've had two position groups.
- 44:39I've got 2 Damatha kids in my list.
- 44:42I'm, I'm not, I'm not just like, you know, going after all the
- 44:44Damatha kids here. But hey, sometimes in the
- 44:49brakes. No doubt man, he he came in like
- 44:53280 last year. He was too.
- 44:55It's more impressive that when he ended high school when he was
- 44:58like 260-5270 and he's damn near 295 now.
- 45:04A he eats and I think I saw one of the videos from it.
- 45:08It ain't all fat. Oh no.
- 45:11It ain't all fat. So that was really good to see
- 45:16with him. I'm I'm, I'm going to stay
- 45:19inside. Christian Evans coming in six to
- 45:24290 already as a true freshman, as a he should be, in the words
- 45:28of Tally, he should be going to his senior prom and he is
- 45:31practicing on a football field at Virginia Tech.
- 45:35And he's got a chip. Because if you all remember, we
- 45:39kept talking about it, remember he, he basically won the Under
- 45:42Armour games up in Maryland, did not get any love from anybody.
- 45:46And he comes in as an absolute unit already.
- 45:50I I don't know if he'll play this year, but he ain't far from
- 45:54it. Let's talk about a couple other
- 45:56guys real quick too, Curtis. Let's start with James Jankum.
- 46:03So two things came out of this. Everybody hates his number and
- 46:08he is firmly in the defensive line group, meaning, you know,
- 46:11he's likely going to be playing edge in this system, right.
- 46:14So I think we've learned, we've learned those two things from
- 46:20from this roster is seeing his number, hating it and
- 46:23understanding he's going to be that edge position and not not
- 46:28that not some sort of linebacker role that he played at his
- 46:31previous stop. So.
- 46:32No, no, no, definitely, definitely edge with that.
- 46:36Speaking of edges, I I love seeing burgers put on good
- 46:39weight. I love seeing Abby put on the
- 46:42good weight because they're going to need it this year.
- 46:45Ace and Stevens as well. Let's talk about your boy,
- 46:50Jasari Priester. So, you know, everybody
- 46:56questioned why did they go get this kid from down at Hampton?
- 47:01And it was like, because there were rumors, what, 65 to 6-8?
- 47:06Basically nobody had him over 300 lbs.
- 47:10It was like, oh he's like 27280. And I first thought we heard,
- 47:14you know, that's OK he's young, get him in the weight room. 6 to
- 47:20high 312 lbs. That's a big boy.
- 47:24That is a that that may be maybe maybe height wise to weight
- 47:30wise. I'm trying to go back and I'm
- 47:34going to look at the mole ones here that might be one of the
- 47:38bigger and and y'all out there that can shake my memory.
- 47:41That might be one of the biggest.
- 47:50He might be one. It's.
- 47:51Certainly the tallest to girth ratio defensive lineman we've
- 47:55had. Ever.
- 47:58Now, And, and it's funny, like you see him at that weight, you
- 48:01got a guy like Andrew Hanchuck coming over playing offensive
- 48:03line, same height and 30 lbs lighter.
- 48:08That's that's, that's to be, that's wild.
- 48:11And I mean, it sounds like the guy can move pretty well too.
- 48:15I don't know if he's still moving at 312, like he was
- 48:18moving at, you know, the two 8290 range that they had him at
- 48:23coming over. But yeah, I mean, that's that's
- 48:27about 20 lbs heavier than I was expecting him to come in at so.
- 48:32So it's, it's kind of wild and I'm, I'm like, I'm, I'm trying
- 48:35to go to the archives here. And I mean, we'll, we'll take
- 48:38the grain of salt that, you know, these are the official
- 48:41heights and weights. I'm, I'm sure this is not a
- 48:451000% accurate height and weight.
- 48:49Listen, but I mean, this, this is what's being put out there.
- 48:51This is what's being put in the program.
- 48:53So. All right, you know who it was.
- 48:57Who's that? Settle was pretty close to that.
- 48:59Settle's like 63, like 3-15 and we know what Tim did.
- 49:05Tim was for the three years he was here, he was unbelievable.
- 49:09But that is a lot of man. And if we're talking about we
- 49:12need A1 or A0, if he can get the right leverage you, you might
- 49:17have your nose to go true with the true three man front.
- 49:22Let's hit a couple other guys here on the defensive line 1 and
- 49:28I don't know if I'm underwhelmed, but Arias Nash
- 49:34under 280 lbs. I know he's a three tech.
- 49:37I know that's not his game, but did you want to see a little
- 49:42more from him or do you feel like you know what that he
- 49:44played that at D2. He played against Alabama at
- 49:48that with Mercer. He he cut through those guys or
- 49:51is or do you feel like he's got his role?
- 49:54He's not. He doesn't need to gain weight.
- 49:55This is his role. So I, I, I want to see how we're
- 50:00deploying him, you know, is, is he going to be a frontline
- 50:07player in every formation that we have?
- 50:11If he if he's going to be that four eye and kind of move, you
- 50:15know, potentially a little bit wider when we go into an odd
- 50:19front, then you know, I think that's going to be plenty
- 50:23sufficient in most cases. Yeah, there might be a couple a
- 50:28couple teams that are, you know, power run focus that might have
- 50:33a little something to say about that.
- 50:35But for most, most of our roster is is more spread oriented and
- 50:42and less smashed mouth. I don't think he's going to have
- 50:46a problem playing the four eye at that.
- 50:52Got it, got it. All right, Anybody else on the
- 50:56defensive line, I mean, you got bail like 61235, but I mean
- 51:00we've seen undersized defensive lineman and edge guys before.
- 51:03So that's not a like. Yeah, that's still not, that's
- 51:06still not super undersized. Obviously John comes probably a
- 51:08little bit a little bit heavier there.
- 51:10He's at 258 playing it, you know, a little bit taller there.
- 51:14But I think those probably are going to be your, your, your two
- 51:18primary edge guys with. Stevens Abbey and Burgos.
- 51:25Exactly. Those guys are going to be
- 51:26mixing in there. I'm sure.
- 51:27I'm sure Burgos is going to get kind of that first, you know,
- 51:30first run along with with Bell and Jonka as far as like who's
- 51:34going to be first guys out there and then the other guys are
- 51:39going to going to kind of be fighting for the for the second
- 51:42unit. 100% So again, again, I think overall in a good spot,
- 51:48defensive line was there is nothing like jumping up that
- 51:51scares me. That says, OK, we are
- 51:55significantly undersized here. This is going to be a problem
- 51:58for power run teams. So we'll roll on linebacker
- 52:02room. Linebacker room is always a
- 52:03weird one. We're skipping kickers.
- 52:08You mean go kickers? Let's see.
- 52:11No, I don't. Kallo lost a pound.
- 52:13All right. There.
- 52:15We go He went from 200 to 199. He had a he had a goal, got more
- 52:20toned. That's right, That's right.
- 52:22It was cut season. Yeah, linebacker room, obviously
- 52:26the way it's looking, Woodson, Keller's probably going to be
- 52:28given the jobs. Woodson up a little bit from
- 52:32last year, Keller about the same.
- 52:34But to me, let's look. So fast, my friend.
- 52:37What's that? I like Woodson blocked in there.
- 52:42We'll we'll see about Keller. Hey, where is it?
- 52:45Hold on, wait a second. There was a good one in the chat
- 52:49a little while ago. Got to find it.
- 52:52Got to find it. That's a good one, Josh.
- 53:01That's a good one. Well, let's be realistic.
- 53:06I don't think they're going to be putting Jordan Bay with what?
- 53:08What happened? He's obviously, he's obviously
- 53:12in the doghouse right now, But Jordan Bass, I mean, dude, he's
- 53:18205. I don't think he can play him at
- 53:22the linebacker position this year.
- 53:24Now, luckily, he's a true junior, so you have a red shirt
- 53:28to burn. So that's the question is do do
- 53:32you, do you end up throwing a red shirt on him?
- 53:36Is a guy like Caleb Spencer going to work in there?
- 53:40Yeah. There, there's talk of him
- 53:41moving to Mike. There's talk of him, you know,
- 53:44kind of playing both of the linebacker positions there.
- 53:47It you know, it sounds like he's moving fully away from. *.
- 53:52A star safety type role. This is going to very much be a
- 53:57linebacker position for him. So I'm curious to see how that
- 54:02shakes out. Obviously we know Gabe Williams
- 54:04working back from injury. You know, numbers there don't
- 54:09shock me too much because he wasn't able to do anything this
- 54:12offseason. No, not, no chance to gain.
- 54:16So Clatterbaugh coming in at 62243 is, is is nice and what
- 54:21you like to see? Well, as long as it ain't fat,
- 54:23but you know 243, you can trim 10 lbs of that.
- 54:26Nice. Brian, you, you said something
- 54:28else. McDonald Brothers man.
- 54:31Tough to believe, right? Yeah, we got the McDonnell
- 54:35brothers are now red shirt juniors, sorry, red shirt
- 54:38seniors. And it seems like like just so
- 54:41when we when we started this, this whole this whole shebang,
- 54:45you know, they they that was their that was their class, that
- 54:49that was their recruiting class coming out.
- 54:51So it's kind of it's wild that in in the ride so far, we've,
- 54:58you know, we, we've lived through the McDonald cycle and
- 55:02we're, we're about to, you know, fully cycle through the McDonald
- 55:05twins. So shout out to them, shout out
- 55:08to them. Not really seeing the field that
- 55:10much last year. I don't know.
- 55:11You know, that was a, that was a big shift from from 23 to 24
- 55:15with, you know, them kind of being very, very heavy in the
- 55:19rotation, you know, especially, you know, looking at which one
- 55:26is it. Jayden.
- 55:29Jayden's a linebacker. Jayden.
- 55:31Yeah. Jayden.
- 55:32Jayden had the heavy rotation at linebacker, yeah.
- 55:36So it was funny seeing him kind of really fall out of favor in
- 55:42that. Rotation, yeah.
- 55:44So, you know, linebacker room, some good games.
- 55:48I mean, I think over the last few years we had not seen
- 55:50anything. Nobody deficient.
- 55:52And I mean, I think with Jordan Bass right now with everything
- 55:55going on, hold on, you can't say that Josh until he plays depends
- 56:02on what he is. And you know what, there were
- 56:06times the last two years defense would have been a hell of a lot
- 56:09better with a Dax type who would have been getting to the right
- 56:13spot, would have prevented a lot of big ass touchdowns.
- 56:17Even if it would have been maybe a second late, at least
- 56:21something would have happened. I always say that.
- 56:25All right, Brian, anything on the long snappers as we move
- 56:29down here? No.
- 56:30OK, the big one offensive line, I know.
- 56:38You know, again, do you take them with a grain of salt?
- 56:42Yes. But you know, when they put
- 56:45somebody like Brody at 67332, I don't think he's 285 at all.
- 56:52And just looking at some pictures, he ain't 285.
- 56:54What? So what are the what are the
- 56:55gains for Brody? What was he last year?
- 56:57Brody Gaines would have been. Got to find the name.
- 57:04Got to find the name. Only 5 lbs.
- 57:12He was 327 last year. OK, All right.
- 57:15So I mean progress. Progress getting bigger, getting
- 57:19stronger, hopefully. I like, I like seeing Tomas
- 57:22Remat come in at 66317. I, I think if not initially,
- 57:30maybe eventually he's going to be, you know, your, your, your,
- 57:35your left tackle. Yeah, he could, he could end up
- 57:38slide into guard. He played guard a lot at West
- 57:40Virginia. He's a swing guy that can play
- 57:43both positions. You know, when I when I look at
- 57:48the tape, I like Johnny Garrett a whole lot more right tackle
- 57:51than I do left tackle. Oh, 100%.
- 57:55So if, if that's, if that's what we're operating under, then I'm
- 58:02hoping that Remack can pull out a yeah, a, a starting role there
- 58:08at left tackle, but. Well, that's that's.
- 58:10Good. You know, in in you're looking
- 58:12at this group. I still feel better even losing
- 58:172 guys that we thought would would be starters on this.
- 58:21I still feel better about with what we got in the portal,
- 58:26better about this unit overall than I felt about last.
- 58:29Year's unit 100%. We did lose.
- 58:33There's not a glaring hole. The The glaring hole is not
- 58:38there anymore. We know who the glaring hole is.
- 58:42We don't need to say his name. The glaring hole is not there
- 58:45anymore. No.
- 58:46But the question is can someone fill that glaring hole and not
- 58:50become the glaring hole? And I think overall would just
- 58:54again with the majority of these guys would not.
- 58:58I'm sure we're saying glaring, not glory, glaring coal.
- 59:02Who put glory? I said.
- 59:03Glare, I said. Glory.
- 59:05All right. But I think overall, you just
- 59:08look at the the room in general, it's it's built.
- 59:12It's you're not sitting out here.
- 59:14Again. There were just, I felt like for
- 59:16years it was just like, we are so fucking undersized.
- 59:20Yeah, this isn't even funny. But I don't feel that way
- 59:23anymore. And I think when we come back in
- 59:26a couple weeks, Brian, definitely we want to hammer
- 59:30what we think the best and the most optimal line is going to
- 59:36be. Yeah, Staller, it's huge.
- 59:39Now, how quick can he take a step?
- 59:42Because physical wise, he is a monster with decent feet, right?
- 59:48Brian Carter Staller had decent feet.
- 59:51He's not. He's not tripping over himself
- 59:53yet, but I. Mean so he looked a lot.
- 59:56So thinking about big guys that are coming out, he looked a
- 59:59whole lot better than Brody did coming out.
- 1:00:01Yeah, yeah, and there was a reason he was a little bit
- 1:00:04higher rated. All righty, let's go to the
- 1:00:07quarterback room because you you like you, you texted me this
- 1:00:11like right off the bat. You like look at that, Curtis,
- 1:00:14and I'm like pulling it up. What was it, Brian?
- 1:00:16What did you text me that day? I.
- 1:00:18Mean we got we we got pop over 2 bills.
- 1:00:23At 5:11. At 2:00. 11-2 Bills, baby.
- 1:00:28You know, if if the concern is about his his frame, he's
- 1:00:33starting to fill that out a little bit.
- 1:00:34He is doing what we said he needed to do.
- 1:00:39He had to do that. He had to fill out.
- 1:00:41He could not stick in that 185 to 190 range with how any of
- 1:00:46these offenses are going to go in with what he has to do.
- 1:00:50And, and you love seeing it because it tells you from my
- 1:00:54aspect is he knew it. He knew he needed to get gains.
- 1:00:57He needed to get strong in the weight room.
- 1:00:58You need to put on those pounds and he did it, which to me says
- 1:01:03there's that work ethic there. He wants it.
- 1:01:06He effectively is the backup quarterback.
- 1:01:09There is no if ands or buts about it.
- 1:01:11So we'll see how it goes. We'll see how he looks in
- 1:01:14spring. Other than the quarterback room,
- 1:01:19I think brand coming in really big, really big.
- 1:01:23I I if you get to go to the spring game, see if you can get
- 1:01:2612 and 18 near each other and try to snap a picture of it.
- 1:01:29Brian between OK, here's base guys being classified as
- 1:01:336211951210 probably be a little difference up in here.
- 1:01:39Yeah. And I mean, you know, when when
- 1:01:43we talked about it, we were comparing Ryan and Brand.
- 1:01:46I mean, we kind of said, OK, well, Ryan is definitely like a
- 1:01:51bigger, taller pop coming out, right.
- 1:01:53Yeah, like that. That's kind of just looking at
- 1:01:56the way they played, looking at everything a little bit more
- 1:01:59polished, maybe throwing the ball than than Pop was initially
- 1:02:01coming out. But you know, very similar style
- 1:02:06and, and overall frame. If not, you know, looking at the
- 1:02:13the the weight itself. But yeah, Ajaj is a big dude
- 1:02:18coming in 62210. I mean, you can see him very
- 1:02:23much in the same mold of of Kyron as far as how if, if, if
- 1:02:27he fills out some more being in that 220-5230, you know, Kyron
- 1:02:31up at at 2:35 on his own right there.
- 1:02:34So you can see him definitely filling out to that level as he
- 1:02:38kind of progresses through his career.
- 1:02:40Yep, 100 percent, 100%. All right, let's go down to
- 1:02:44running backs, a room that is absolutely banged up right now.
- 1:02:47We know Overton's out for the spring.
- 1:02:50We know the kid from Bowling Green won't be down until
- 1:02:53summer. I think actually, I think that's
- 1:02:56as silly as it sounds like I'm OK with that because the his
- 1:03:00style and how he ran last year. Like I don't think he needs
- 1:03:04spring. Just just get him into fall camp
- 1:03:06and then turn him loose during the season.
- 1:03:08But. Well, the thing that sucks is
- 1:03:11not getting him in the I think the the weight program with the
- 1:03:14team is the bigger loss than necessarily the spring practice.
- 1:03:19True, but I mean, let me let me do a little something here.
- 1:03:22Let let me let me pivot back that in a second.
- 1:03:24But take a look there, Brian, and just look at the running
- 1:03:29backroom. I mean, does anything worry you?
- 1:03:34Like it seems like everybody's at a good weight.
- 1:03:37You got Coney, Mason, Bennett, Hawkins along with the kid from
- 1:03:42Bowling Green coming out. Does anything anything stand out
- 1:03:48to you? I wasn't expecting to see
- 1:03:53Hawkins at 2:19. Yeah, 10 LB gain from where he
- 1:03:58was at D2 last year. Yeah.
- 1:04:00So I, I think that's, you know, that bodes well for his
- 1:04:03transition to this level, you know, playing at 511, still
- 1:04:10being more of a, you know, pass catching threat than I think
- 1:04:13we'll see from Terry and Stewart when he comes in.
- 1:04:17So I'm excited to see what he's doing.
- 1:04:19He's apparently probably going to get a a decent amount of run
- 1:04:22in the in the spring I would imagine with everyone banged up.
- 1:04:27Well, well, Coney, well, you know, you heard the thing about
- 1:04:29Coney being out there grinding through and I'm assuming if he's
- 1:04:33practiced what he's practicing, I'm assuming Nick's for Coney,
- 1:04:38but he will be important. By the way, Stewart 5 down to 20
- 1:04:43last year Bowling Green. So I, I think, I think again, I
- 1:04:48think he's fine. I mean, you know, why isn't he
- 1:04:50here? I think the, the story is he's
- 1:04:53got a class, he's got a complete.
- 1:04:57But again, I nothing has jumped out.
- 1:05:01And I think we've said that a couple times, right?
- 1:05:03And we've got a couple more rooms just to kind of overall
- 1:05:05look at. But nothing jumps out as saying,
- 1:05:11are we significantly worse than where we were last year.
- 1:05:15And in some areas like offensive line, probably better than we
- 1:05:20were last year. Linebacker room with the
- 1:05:24emergence of Caleb Woodson, probably a little bit better
- 1:05:27than we were last year. So.
- 1:05:29I mean, looking at offensive line, like we don't have anyone
- 1:05:33that I think is as good as chaplain, but I think no, in
- 1:05:37aggregate we're a lot better. The the the worst current and
- 1:05:42offensive lineman that's going to get playing time is better
- 1:05:45than what we had last year. Yep.
- 1:05:47Robbie hit up about Mason. I was going to mention that
- 1:05:50before we rolled on, but Tyler Mason from down in Mount Airy,
- 1:05:55NC, both up 200, came in at 198. So he is down with that kind of
- 1:06:01the level. Like OK, you can play a full
- 1:06:03season if we need you. Your body is ready for it.
- 1:06:08Safety room I think is going to be, we can look at them.
- 1:06:11I think literally, Brian, if we look at everybody that's in the
- 1:06:15safety room, their heights, weights, it's all fine, fine.
- 1:06:21Safety is going to be more interesting to probably talk
- 1:06:23about in a couple weeks where we're going to try to throw
- 1:06:28darts at where people are going to play.
- 1:06:30And then when we actually see the game, because as you look
- 1:06:33through that, I mean, you know, shortest guy's 511, lightest
- 1:06:37guy's 185 at safeties, heaviest guys two O 5.
- 1:06:46And the guy that's 185 is kind of a guy that played a lot of
- 1:06:50nickel in corner. So makes sense, right?
- 1:06:53Yeah. Again, I think that room, once
- 1:06:57we see probably Brian, as you're sitting live at Lane, you know,
- 1:07:01writing your numbers out, figuring out where Koval is,
- 1:07:03where's Flowers is, where's Ellis, where's Cash, that's kind
- 1:07:08of going to be the interesting piece because of those four guys
- 1:07:12that came in. Flowers does have one year of
- 1:07:15eligibility left. Is that going to go as a, is
- 1:07:20that going to be a deterrent factor of who plays where?
- 1:07:24We don't know. We feel very confident about
- 1:07:26Reddish. We'll talk about that in a few
- 1:07:28weeks. Tight end room?
- 1:07:35Yeah, Yep, they're there. Everybody stayed healthy.
- 1:07:41Everybody stayed healthy. You know, we're not really
- 1:07:45adding anyone to the room in theory.
- 1:07:50So this room kind of is mostly stagnant.
- 1:07:56You know, I think you feel really good about Benji.
- 1:07:59You feel pretty good about HSG and Zeke.
- 1:08:05I think everybody else is a big question mark and I don't think
- 1:08:09they need to be anything more than that this year.
- 1:08:11I think that's going to be the guys that you're leaning on in
- 1:08:15this offense this year. 100% All right, last position group here
- 1:08:18before we wrap up the night. That's the wide receiver group.
- 1:08:22And and let's just you talked about what he can be used in
- 1:08:26man, if he ain't built like Devo Samuel was when he was down in
- 1:08:30South Carolina. Give me some.
- 1:08:31Give me some stats on Cam Selden.
- 1:08:34Brian, All right, Cam Selden. Let's find Cam Selden.
- 1:08:40He is 6/1, 2:11, 61211. Again, we talked about the
- 1:08:49running back bills. We just kind of came from that
- 1:08:51area and you and you hear that and you're like, all right,
- 1:08:53yeah. That that that's a running back
- 1:08:56and that's a wide receiver that's going to be playing like
- 1:08:58a running back. And I'm interested to see see
- 1:09:05him in action because he's the guy that I think excited me the
- 1:09:07most. Even though he's a guy that I
- 1:09:09think there's still a lot of question marks on because of the
- 1:09:11position change that you know, it's it's going to it's going to
- 1:09:17be it's going to be interesting to see how we deploy him.
- 1:09:21Is he going to be a guy that's going to do some stuff out of
- 1:09:25the backfield occasionally? Probably.
- 1:09:26But I think he's really going to be that guy that you want to get
- 1:09:30the ball in their hands in that you know that like I said
- 1:09:33earlier, that 3 to 8 yard range and just let them be a be a guy
- 1:09:37in space. Well, first of all, Devo Samuel
- 1:09:40senior year 6 foot 210. That's, and if you look at him
- 1:09:45it the, the build is there. I think Brian, what excites me
- 1:09:49about Selden so much again and looking at some of Montgomery's
- 1:09:53game film, it's those 3 yard drags, it's those flat routes.
- 1:09:59Because his build you're if, if you were going to say, you know,
- 1:10:07we're going to put a corner back on him, it will have to be your
- 1:10:09best tackling corner. It will have to be your most
- 1:10:12physical corner, but there are going to be some corners, in my
- 1:10:16opinion, that are not going to tackle him.
- 1:10:19I just believe that they're not going to be able to tackle him.
- 1:10:22And then it becomes there's your nightmare mismatch.
- 1:10:24You know what, we're going to throw the safety on.
- 1:10:26We're going to put a linebacker on.
- 1:10:27And OK, we know he was where he came out in high school.
- 1:10:33He was an athlete. He was an elite athlete.
- 1:10:36It's why he got so highly recruited.
- 1:10:38It's why he got there because he does have that explosion.
- 1:10:42It just it just pops. And if they deploy him right,
- 1:10:46especially having Donovan Green, you know, kind of that elder
- 1:10:50statesman who is kind of the route technician.
- 1:10:53And then the way Aiden Green is explained with his explosion.
- 1:10:55If not, not even counting some of the other guys on here like
- 1:10:59Chan's, you know, Brooke Keelan. Excuse me?
- 1:11:03Don't get in trouble with anybody.
- 1:11:04Keelan Adams. Yeah, I ain't crazy.
- 1:11:08There is a chance I meet his Mama one day.
- 1:11:10I don't want to get popped up. That's right.
- 1:11:11That's right. You got, you got to keep it,
- 1:11:12right. Yeah.
- 1:11:14And and it's going to be I'm I'm excited to see what how Keelan
- 1:11:19and Chan's work into this rotation.
- 1:11:22I mean, obviously know Aiden is kind of the established guy
- 1:11:25here. From a just experience with this
- 1:11:28group perspective, we know Donovan Green is bringing
- 1:11:32probably the most overall experience to the room, you
- 1:11:37know, new, new due to this team. But we we have kind of the law
- 1:11:42firm of Green and green out there.
- 1:11:44Wide receiver. I'm going to be I'm I'm going to
- 1:11:48have to make a poster or something like that at some
- 1:11:51point when we when we go to a game this year for that one.
- 1:11:55I'm I'm interested. I I think that this wide
- 1:12:00receiver room, I think I think this is we're we're kind of
- 1:12:03looking at the same thing that we were talking about in the
- 1:12:06offensive line room. You know, once everybody gets
- 1:12:09healthy is that, you know, in aggregate, I think this wide
- 1:12:14receiver room could be better than the group we had last year,
- 1:12:19even if you don't have the highest of highs that you had
- 1:12:23with the Jalen Lane. Yeah, so.
- 1:12:29It's a it's interesting. I think overall from that game
- 1:12:32perspective, nothing stands out. You don't feel like we're
- 1:12:39undersized anywhere. You don't feel like we're going
- 1:12:41to give up physicality anywhere. So not only shout out to what's
- 1:12:48going on with Ferg, but also with the prior staff getting us
- 1:12:52back on track. So again, these Galt who went to
- 1:12:57Marshall, he may not have had everything locked down, but as
- 1:13:02far as getting guys to optimal weights, getting them to optimal
- 1:13:06strength, I think he got us there.
- 1:13:09I think it's the other piece, the.
- 1:13:11Conditioning piece was where things kind of fell off the.
- 1:13:14Exactly, exactly. And and to me, you think about
- 1:13:18Jared Ferguson playing fullback. He was the prototypical fullback
- 1:13:21build and he had the endurance. So yeah, Brian, let's hit these
- 1:13:28real quick. Basketball seasons effectively
- 1:13:31over for the Hokies with the women losing earlier this week.
- 1:13:35Men obviously didn't even make a tournament portal going crazy.
- 1:13:40And then I didn't read all going.
- 1:13:41Legit crazy like three times the entries compared to last year.
- 1:13:45Sane insanity and obviously the Hokies on a better footing or
- 1:13:51NIL this year. The Whit Babcock statement that
- 1:13:53I read from Andy Bitter just made me go.
- 1:13:56Which one? Which one?
- 1:13:58The the one about we didn't really anticipate the basketball
- 1:14:01market to be like that. What did you think it was going
- 1:14:04to be? Everybody's going to spend
- 1:14:07$100,000 a player. They took took a shot at the at
- 1:14:10the folks on on Twitter as well. Like are you get your news from
- 1:14:13Twitter If you think that we stole money from basketball to
- 1:14:17give it to football, I, I heard that places that weren't
- 1:14:23Twitter, I'll just say that much and we'll move along.
- 1:14:28I don't think we stole. I think funds were allocated
- 1:14:31differently. Because you misread the room.
- 1:14:35Yeah, look at Jim. Jim, we had heard from you all
- 1:14:38night. And Jim, it's a banger at the
- 1:14:40end. 70% fire. So I mean it sounds like of of
- 1:14:43the due allocation 75% is going to football.
- 1:14:48Yep. So it's it's basically mirroring
- 1:14:50the percentages that the settlement were in terms of the
- 1:14:54yearly allocation from the the general fund.
- 1:14:59So. Yeah, 75% to football, was it.
- 1:15:0415% to men's basketball is it? Am I right?
- 1:15:07That sounds right. I'd I'd have to pull it up
- 1:15:10again. I was looking at the bidder
- 1:15:12tweet earlier. Well, that, that's, that's over
- 1:15:153 million just for basketball, not counting probably some other
- 1:15:18things, not counting house settlement stuff.
- 1:15:21I'm assuming basketball's probably going to be what, five
- 1:15:23and a half, 6 1/2 donate. I'm and I'm talking guys who are
- 1:15:27going to be giving money towards NIL specifically for foot for
- 1:15:30basketball. Some a direct, yeah.
- 1:15:32Direct, yeah. Direct and you should be able to
- 1:15:35put a decent Ross together and, and if some are going to go
- 1:15:37crazy, absolutely some are going to go absolutely crazy and, and
- 1:15:44that is what it is. But with $6 million to fund a
- 1:15:48basketball team of 12, you should be able to get a couple
- 1:15:53really good players. Just don't go after guys that
- 1:15:57you know, could potentially be fully suspended for, you know.
- 1:16:02Betting on games that's better vetting, please.
- 1:16:06Better betting, please. I think we've.
- 1:16:08Had what, three years in a row where we've had a player, a
- 1:16:12guard, a, a, a probably starting guard that played minimal or
- 1:16:20none for this basketball team, that's three years in a row.
- 1:16:26And I mean, you can say what you want to say is that the
- 1:16:29difference between a 13 and 19 team and a 19 and 13 team?
- 1:16:33Maybe, maybe not, I don't know. But you you never know.
- 1:16:38One last piece before we close it up.
- 1:16:40Wrestling finishes 11th at the nationals.
- 1:16:44I only saw the I I never saw they never replayed it and I
- 1:16:48never a chance to see it. But from everyone that I've seen
- 1:16:54Twitter speaking with a couple other people, Caleb Pinson got
- 1:16:57completely robbed because his takedown was a takedown.
- 1:17:01And even though the brick was thrown, it should have never
- 1:17:04been overturned to begin with. It should have been 31 and he
- 1:17:08should be a two time national champion.
- 1:17:11So but wrestling was younger this year.
- 1:17:16You know, Caleb's back next year, Eddie Ventriska's back
- 1:17:19next year, Mcdougal's back next year.
- 1:17:21He got like a Jimmy Mullen who's going to be back next year.
- 1:17:25I'll be interested to see wrestling next year because
- 1:17:29where they finished this year, it was supposed to be a down
- 1:17:32year. It was, you know, you don't use
- 1:17:35it. You don't lose a guy like
- 1:17:36Michael Lewis and a few of the other guys from the last few
- 1:17:39years and have a lot of young guys come on.
- 1:17:41But I, I, I think the potential's there.
- 1:17:46And I'm not saying national championship, I'm not crazy, but
- 1:17:48I think to get individual national championships is the
- 1:17:51possibility is there. And I think to get back in the
- 1:17:53top five is definitely a possibility.
- 1:17:57I mean, I could go through the points, but I, I do think, and
- 1:18:01if anybody knows the exact way, I think if Caleb had won, we
- 1:18:03probably would have been like 7th, not 11th in the final
- 1:18:07standings just because of the difference between that for the
- 1:18:111st and 2nd. Quote me if I'm wrong, but
- 1:18:15anything else you need to unload man before we hop off here.
- 1:18:18No, I'm glad we got that, that, that bitter stuff in there.
- 1:18:21Well, on, on, on wit because that, that's something that I
- 1:18:27saw pop through just before we, we, we punched it and we hadn't
- 1:18:30really talked about really diving into that, but I'm glad
- 1:18:33we got there because. I'm glad we got a shot in just.
- 1:18:37Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:18:38Because I haven't had a chance to read it all.
- 1:18:39I've been busy as hell this afternoon.
- 1:18:42I know you. You were sitting at a tennis
- 1:18:44match for 3 1/2 hours. He did 3 1/2 hours.
- 1:18:48He did. Well he did.
- 1:18:50It was about three. It was about 3 hours.
- 1:18:52Yeah, just sitting there, sitting there.
- 1:18:54So it's all good supporting our kids.
- 1:18:57All right. Anything breaking on the
- 1:19:00Twittersphere? Not much, man.
- 1:19:04I think, I think we're we're good and there's a lot of a lot
- 1:19:07of discussion around the 70% below Clemson thing.
- 1:19:12I know, I know, Jim threw that that in there that I think that
- 1:19:15was the thing that is stood out to folks the most is that we
- 1:19:19were that fucking far behind Clemson in NIL for basketball.
- 1:19:25Just shows you this, this is what I'll say.
- 1:19:30And if you can agree or disagree, there are certain
- 1:19:35people that are in athletic departments in this era, they're
- 1:19:40never going to be a DS. And then there are certain
- 1:19:43people that are. And you at Virginia Tech, you've
- 1:19:47got to find the person who understands that concept better
- 1:19:50than anybody when the next hire is made, because in my opinion,
- 1:19:54the next hire is probably going to be made within the next 24
- 1:19:58months. And I think, I think it's two
- 1:20:01fronts too, because I think you got to you got to have somebody
- 1:20:04that is not only well attuned with what NIL is, but I think
- 1:20:09you need to have somebody that's a little bit more that does a
- 1:20:13better job with engaging the alumni and the donor base.
- 1:20:20Better than Wit in the sports that count, I think.
- 1:20:26I think Wit does a pretty good job in in some areas, but I
- 1:20:29think his personality doesn't always inspire confidence and I
- 1:20:38think that can trickle down into other areas.
- 1:20:42Not just OK fans. Fans don't like him because he's
- 1:20:45bristly or he, he, he doesn't not the most personal person
- 1:20:50when you, when you have a, an interview style with him.
- 1:20:54I think he's a lot. He seems to be more relaxed in a
- 1:20:57conversational tone, but he doesn't do well in kind of a, if
- 1:21:03the format is, is, is more formal.
- 1:21:05He, his personality gets lost somewhere in the shuffle there.
- 1:21:08And I, I think, you know, that that can turn some folks off a
- 1:21:13lot of times too. So, yeah, there's, there's a lot
- 1:21:16of things that I think we could point to and say, you know,
- 1:21:20some, some of this was already endemic here at Virginia Tech
- 1:21:24before that. And then some of that is Wit has
- 1:21:27his fingers all over it. Yep, and you can't do that.
- 1:21:32You cannot do that. So with that being said, let's
- 1:21:36wrap up this episode of the Boundary Corner podcast brought
- 1:21:39to you by Counts Family Pharmacy.
