Latest / Bleacher Report / Andre Agassi Reacts to Alexander Zverev Advancing to the Roland-Garros Final
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: He's on eighteen of his last twenty matches at Roland Garros.
- 0:03Speaker 1: It's now made the finals two of the last three years.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Everything you go, how was he not one one yet?
- 0:09Speaker 1: He just dispatched Hodar, Now he dispatches ben Chikan from
- 0:12Speaker 1: an chic just twenty Definitely a breakout star, many more
- 0:16Speaker 1: years to come, but Zverev handles business at vances. Have
- 0:21Speaker 1: you had enough time to process?
- 0:22Speaker 2: I guess I have. I guess I have. You know,
- 0:24Speaker 2: I mean a little bit disappointing my match, I have
- 0:26Speaker 2: to say, I mean, you got to give always credit
- 0:28Speaker 2: to the winner. There's two guys out there. You got
- 0:30Speaker 2: to be better than one person. It's all that's really
- 0:32Speaker 2: asked to Goad. And you know, Mensik's twenty, he's young,
- 0:36Speaker 2: he's been through a lot physically this tournament. He's been
- 0:38Speaker 2: through a lot mentally, So who knows. Who knows how
- 0:40Speaker 2: that played out. But I have to say that if
- 0:43Speaker 2: I was MENSI and I flew my mental coach in
- 0:45Speaker 2: first class, he's going back coach. I mean, Phillips make
- 0:49Speaker 2: him walk back or something. Because he had three four
- 0:53Speaker 2: you know, first said fifteen forty. He had an opportunity
- 0:56Speaker 2: with the forehand laid off of it a little bit.
- 0:58Speaker 2: For all, he gets four you know, shanks in a
- 1:01Speaker 2: row off of Zerev's forehand. So I think all of
- 1:03Speaker 2: a sudden he started to realize, maybe maybe making this
- 1:06Speaker 2: match difficult, it's a real possibility, maybe I have a shot.
- 1:09Speaker 2: From that point on, he just he kind of lost
- 1:11Speaker 2: the plot a little bit. And I think if you
- 1:13Speaker 2: if he had a point to something, he maybe could
- 1:14Speaker 2: have done different. I mean, I still feel even in hindsight,
- 1:17Speaker 2: I mean, he's going after Zarev's forehand, and he's going
- 1:20Speaker 2: after it so often that he's actually grooving him into,
- 1:24Speaker 2: you know, into feeling good. And then when you go
- 1:25Speaker 2: to the back end you realize what a weapon it is.
- 1:28Speaker 2: You have to be able to stay with Rev a
- 1:29Speaker 2: little bit backhand to back end. Then you have to
- 1:32Speaker 2: go to his forehand, make him take that swing when
- 1:33Speaker 2: he might not want to. But you definitely can't go
- 1:36Speaker 2: to the drop shots so many times until you get
- 1:38Speaker 2: somebody backed up on their heels, you know, and he's
- 1:40Speaker 2: not backed up on his heels, you know, when you're
- 1:42Speaker 2: pressing against your greatest straints. I mean, Mensig's forehand pull
- 1:46Speaker 2: from inside in is not how he's going to penetrate
- 1:49Speaker 2: the court against this guy, even though it's to you know,
- 1:52Speaker 2: Zerev's strength, He needed to pounded there. He needed to
- 1:54Speaker 2: stick to his his strength so that he could at
- 1:57Speaker 2: least feel the best of himself. And I never felt
- 1:59Speaker 2: like he quite made that adjustment. And then when he
- 2:01Speaker 2: lost that first set, gave him a quickly in the second.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Definitely came back in the third. We didn't expect. But
- 2:07Speaker 2: that foreset again. Right when the pressure starts to build,
- 2:10Speaker 2: let him off the hook, and you don't want anybody
- 2:12Speaker 2: with that kind of runway like the rev. He's going
- 2:14Speaker 2: to take it and run with it.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Just to back you up. Only four fourhand winners for
- 2:18Speaker 1: Manshka in this match, fifteen for Zverev or Mary Joe
- 2:21Speaker 1: Fernandez caught up was Verev after the win.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Sasha, Congratulations, that was a terrific performance. You're back into
- 2:29Speaker 3: the row in Garos final. You have your mom, your dad,
- 2:32Speaker 3: your brother, your grandmother here. So what does this moment
- 2:34Speaker 3: mean to you?
- 2:37Speaker 4: Not much at the moment. We still have a match
- 2:40Speaker 4: to play on Sunday, and that's what we're here for.
- 2:42Speaker 4: That's what we're focusing on. I want to play the
- 2:45Speaker 4: best possible match and just focus on that.
- 2:48Speaker 3: You've only lost two sets getting into the final. What
- 2:52Speaker 3: are you proud of us of, not just today, but
- 2:53Speaker 3: throughout these last two weeks.
- 2:56Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I've always found a way even when
- 2:58Speaker 4: it got difficult. I feel like today started playing amazing
- 3:00Speaker 4: tennis in the third set, and I you know, found
- 3:03Speaker 4: a way straight away in the fourth set. And today
- 3:07Speaker 4: definitely was the toughest challenge. He played some amazing tennis
- 3:09Speaker 4: throughout the entire two weeks, and yeah, I'm happy with
- 3:13Speaker 4: the win for sure.
- 3:14Speaker 3: Congratulations, good luck on the final. Thank you.
- 3:17Speaker 1: In addition to the Mary Joe interview, he was asked
- 3:20Speaker 1: afterwards about how he feels. He said, quote, we are athletes.
- 3:23Speaker 1: We usually don't have too much in our heads. Sometimes
- 3:27Speaker 1: it's easier to be stupid. So Zverev a little bit
- 3:29Speaker 1: light hearted after a win that was seemingly easy. What
- 3:32Speaker 1: did you think about the performance today?
- 3:34Speaker 5: Well, I thought he came out and played really well.
- 3:35Speaker 5: He played solid, but he was never really pushed. It
- 3:38Speaker 5: seemed like he'd already won the match before the first
- 3:41Speaker 5: ball was really hit. I didn't feel like Min's sheep
- 3:44Speaker 5: really gave it a push. I would have liked to
- 3:46Speaker 5: have seen him come out firing from the first set.
- 3:49Speaker 5: You know, he played well in the third set, but
- 3:52Speaker 5: that was a little too late at that point. I
- 3:54Speaker 5: think you have someone in Zverev who's been there so
- 3:56Speaker 5: many times before. He's felt the pressure. But you know,
- 4:00Speaker 5: unless you're one all in sets and you really go
- 4:02Speaker 5: toe to toe to toe, I just think Zverev has
- 4:06Speaker 5: too much experiences induced moments and I don't see him
- 4:09Speaker 5: losing in the next match either. I think he is
- 4:11Speaker 5: going to cruise through and he's going to win his
- 4:13Speaker 5: first time here.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Sloana. Is now a twenty nine match win streak for
- 4:18Speaker 1: Zverev against players outside the top ten.
- 4:21Speaker 6: He's consistent. He beats the people he should beat, and
- 4:24Speaker 6: that's I think exactly what this tournament is the people
- 4:26Speaker 6: in front of him. You only have to beat the
- 4:28Speaker 6: opponents in front of you, and that's what he's done
- 4:30Speaker 6: so far. And I think for him, this is the
- 4:33Speaker 6: tournament for him to win. It's also the tournament for
- 4:36Speaker 6: him to lose. He will never probably I won't say
- 4:38Speaker 6: he'll never, but he won't have another opportunity with Janik,
- 4:42Speaker 6: with al Kharaz, with no back with all of those
- 4:44Speaker 6: players out that would really be pushing him in the
- 4:46Speaker 6: semis or assignment.
- 4:51Speaker 5: The point cele.
- 4:57Speaker 1: They are honestly Andre we were going to say about
- 5:00Speaker 1: for you, that's a little.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Route right there. Yeah, we are bringing.
- 5:05Speaker 5: The festivities here.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Go home. To get hold of the township, they had
- 5:10Speaker 2: to
- 5:10Speaker 1: Appear to Paris, France well
