- 0:07Speaker 1: Hey, this guy knows the AL East very well. Cedric
- 0:09Speaker 1: Mullens joining us right now and newly signed with the
- 0:12Speaker 1: Rays this offseason. Cedric, great to have you on the
- 0:14Speaker 1: show here. We appreciate the time. How's the off season,
- 0:17Speaker 1: especially the process of signing. Actually a while ago you
- 0:20Speaker 1: didn't have to wait to find out where your spring
- 0:22Speaker 1: training home was going to be, right.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, we knocked that out pretty soon.
- 0:27Speaker 3: So of course the family was excited, and I'm excited
- 0:30Speaker 3: for the opportunity all on Temple. Like you said, staying
- 0:32Speaker 3: in the AL East. Always fun playing out there. It's
- 0:35Speaker 3: gonna be a less.
- 0:37Speaker 1: What was it like, so take me through it? I mean,
- 0:39Speaker 1: how did you have a lot of conversations with other teams?
- 0:42Speaker 1: Were there multiple offers thrown your way? How did you
- 0:44Speaker 1: end up with the Rays? What did they say that
- 0:46Speaker 1: kind of got the job done for you?
- 0:50Speaker 2: Yeah, it was really about opportunity and planning time.
- 0:53Speaker 3: You know, had conversations with a couple of the teams
- 0:57Speaker 3: just might not have been the right fit for what
- 0:58Speaker 3: I was looking for at the time. Uh, Tampa definitely
- 1:01Speaker 3: presented that semi and just really being able to be myself,
- 1:04Speaker 3: playing my game, you know, go back to certain things
- 1:06Speaker 3: I've always done really well and take advantage.
- 1:09Speaker 4: I need you to put yourself in your shoes. But
- 1:12Speaker 4: a year ago, had the Rais made the same exact
- 1:15Speaker 4: offer and you had to play outside in Florida for
- 1:18Speaker 4: the entire season, would you still you have been like,
- 1:23Speaker 4: I'm not trying to sweat that much.
- 1:25Speaker 5: Would it have changed your decision? Yeah, it possibly could have.
- 1:30Speaker 5: I saw what that schedule looked like for him. It
- 1:32Speaker 5: was it was tough. Hey they went through it for
- 1:35Speaker 5: Shore last.
- 1:35Speaker 4: Year, and is that and is that something that when
- 1:39Speaker 4: you go into it, you're like, do you need to
- 1:41Speaker 4: talk to the Rais like, hey, we got the roof
- 1:43Speaker 4: up right, Like is that something? Or do they come
- 1:45Speaker 4: to you and like, hey we're gonna offer you this
- 1:48Speaker 4: and the umbrella is up.
- 1:49Speaker 6: You don't have to worry about it.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Yeah, that actually kind of front of the conversation. It was.
- 1:55Speaker 3: It was kind of funny. I did ask them. I
- 1:57Speaker 3: was like, what's uh, what's going on with the with
- 1:59Speaker 3: the homefield stadium? They said, oh, we'll be back together,
- 2:02Speaker 3: ready to go. So that was a quick little chuckle
- 2:05Speaker 3: between us. But you know, again, like I said, a
- 2:07Speaker 3: you know, a really good organization that has brought, you know,
- 2:10Speaker 3: the best of a lot of guys coming through, and
- 2:11Speaker 3: I've been able to see that over the years, so,
- 2:13Speaker 3: you know, just trying to replicate what I've been able
- 2:16Speaker 3: to do in some really successful years coming up.
- 2:20Speaker 7: Cedric, You've been in the Al East for most of
- 2:22Speaker 7: your career. You went from the obviously to the Mets
- 2:24Speaker 7: for a little short period here. What was it like though,
- 2:27Speaker 7: when you with the Orioles your whole career and then
- 2:30Speaker 7: they called you in and said said, we're sorry, we
- 2:32Speaker 7: love you, we're not having the year we expected, and
- 2:35Speaker 7: you're going to the New York Mets.
- 2:36Speaker 6: How does it hit you?
- 2:37Speaker 7: Because I always say the first time you get traded,
- 2:40Speaker 7: the first time you switch teams is by far the hardest.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Yeah, it was definitely different.
- 2:47Speaker 3: I've been with the Orioles since being drafted back in
- 2:50Speaker 3: twenty fifteen, so that's ten years with the same organization.
- 2:54Speaker 2: And yeah, it it hit pretty hard, you know, being.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Just having to uplift your entire life, especially out of
- 3:00Speaker 3: New York where things can get hectic just on a
- 3:02Speaker 3: day to day basis. So it was definitely a lot
- 3:05Speaker 3: of changes and adjustments that had to be made. Along with,
- 3:08Speaker 3: you know, trying to perform at your best.
- 3:11Speaker 4: Did you feel like you had to be somebody else?
- 3:13Speaker 4: Anybody could be like, well, you're a big league vet,
- 3:15Speaker 4: like you just had to be who you are. But
- 3:18Speaker 4: as many times as I moved, AJ moved quite a few,
- 3:21Speaker 4: but not as many as me. But you guys were
- 3:23Speaker 4: impact players. Did you feel like you had to be
- 3:25Speaker 4: somebody or not? Because at the time you moved, like
- 3:28Speaker 4: stuff starts barking a little bit, like it's not like
- 3:31Speaker 4: you start the beginning of the off season You're like, huh,
- 3:33Speaker 4: I'm fresh to go put my best foot forward. Did
- 3:36Speaker 4: you have to feel like or do you feel like
- 3:37Speaker 4: you had to be somebody that you weren't in that
- 3:40Speaker 4: moment when you went to the Mets.
- 3:44Speaker 3: In some instances, yeah, you know, there were a bunch
- 3:48Speaker 3: of talented guys where I didn't feel like I had to,
- 3:51Speaker 3: you know.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Try to come in and be something that I completely wasn't.
- 3:55Speaker 3: You know, I was really just trying to, you know,
- 3:57Speaker 3: compliment with the team already had, and that might have
- 3:59Speaker 3: put little pressure on me just to try to do
- 4:01Speaker 3: a little too much for what was already a good
- 4:04Speaker 3: team that you know, just kind of fell off at the.
- 4:06Speaker 1: End, Cedric, I know at some point there was some
- 4:12Speaker 1: hamstring barking. I think, right, was that a factor, do
- 4:16Speaker 1: you think in your mind? And no, players didn't like
- 4:17Speaker 1: to use that and also tell me if I'm off,
- 4:19Speaker 1: But I'm trying to think back last year already feels
- 4:21Speaker 1: like five years ago. But was that a factor at
- 4:24Speaker 1: all for you? At some point during the season.
- 4:29Speaker 2: It was kind of early.
- 4:30Speaker 3: I forget what months specifically, but I was still with
- 4:32Speaker 3: the Rods at the time and it was a ten
- 4:34Speaker 3: day stint.
- 4:35Speaker 2: You know, something just kind of tweaked in.
- 4:36Speaker 3: There might have been more of a crampy type feeling,
- 4:39Speaker 3: but outside of that, you know, the legs felt pretty good.
- 4:42Speaker 3: It was just a matter of fine opportunities to run.
- 4:44Speaker 3: And that's you know, that's why I'm looking forward to
- 4:46Speaker 3: just being being more aggressive, continuing to be more aggressive
- 4:48Speaker 3: on the base pass, continuing to try to do damage
- 4:50Speaker 3: out there.
- 4:51Speaker 4: Talk about the end of that season, talk about how
- 4:53Speaker 4: it was going for you guys in the clubhouse. You
- 4:56Speaker 4: come in from the outside and you're like, okay, Like
- 5:01Speaker 4: I get to watch Juan Soto, Brandon Neimo, I get
- 5:03Speaker 4: to watch Pete Alonzo every single day. Did you know
- 5:08Speaker 4: that the pitching was where it was when you got
- 5:11Speaker 4: there or was it something where you were there for
- 5:13Speaker 4: a week and you're like, we got to score like
- 5:16Speaker 4: seven runs to win this game. Not dissimilar to where
- 5:19Speaker 4: you were in Baltimore.
- 5:23Speaker 3: Yeah, I didn't really know kind of where pitching was
- 5:26Speaker 3: at at that point. Like you said, after a week,
- 5:28Speaker 3: two weeks, it feels pretty evident pitching was struggling. You know,
- 5:33Speaker 3: we had to try to come back late in a
- 5:35Speaker 3: lot of games, and you know, when it comes in
- 5:38Speaker 3: waves like that, it's tough. It's tough to battle back,
- 5:41Speaker 3: you know, it's and every once in a while it
- 5:43Speaker 3: would have those moments where you know, our arms were
- 5:45Speaker 3: dominating and the offense was struggling to get it going.
- 5:48Speaker 3: And when you just have that roller coaster back and forth,
- 5:51Speaker 3: it's tough to get momentum going for especially a playoff.
- 5:53Speaker 7: Run Cedric Quick went wrong in Baltimore. You guys made
- 5:58Speaker 7: the playoffs twenty three, twenty four, where everyone's like the Orioles,
- 6:01Speaker 7: the Orioles, the Orioles. What happened last year? I mean,
- 6:05Speaker 7: Brandon Hyde gets fired, right, They just it was like
- 6:09Speaker 7: every it was like a perfect storm of everything went wrong.
- 6:12Speaker 6: Did you have a feeling.
- 6:13Speaker 7: Of anything that changed in the clubhouse or among the
- 6:17Speaker 7: team because it just didn't work.
- 6:21Speaker 3: Yeah, And amongst the group there, I don't think there
- 6:25Speaker 3: were too many guys that were coming off as negative
- 6:27Speaker 3: coming to the field every single day.
- 6:29Speaker 2: We had a positive attitude.
- 6:30Speaker 3: We were, you know, really just trying to find a
- 6:34Speaker 3: way to piece together us some wins, to create momentum.
- 6:36Speaker 3: And during spring training we came across a lot of
- 6:39Speaker 3: injuries that for especially on the pitching side, for guys
- 6:42Speaker 3: that we were expecting to have really strong years and
- 6:45Speaker 3: they got cut before they even began just because of injuries.
- 6:48Speaker 3: And that kind of put a lot of pressure on
- 6:51Speaker 3: everyone else to try to pick up some slack, whether
- 6:53Speaker 3: it be offense, whether it be pitching, whether it be
- 6:54Speaker 3: guys that got picked up just from the expectations of
- 6:58Speaker 3: us going out there and dominating.
- 7:00Speaker 2: But it hit us. It hit is hard, all right.
- 7:03Speaker 4: You were there through the lean years to the years
- 7:06Speaker 4: when they started calling up all these prospects. We just
- 7:10Speaker 4: talked to Baseball JJ Cooper of Baseball America. You saw it,
- 7:14Speaker 4: you saw it firsthand, and now all of a sudden,
- 7:16Speaker 4: you see I'll take you to Adlie Rushman comes up,
- 7:19Speaker 4: Gunnar Henderson comes up, and you're starting to see these guys.
- 7:23Speaker 4: Did you ever sit there and say, man, I would
- 7:26Speaker 4: love it if they would like trade some of these
- 7:27Speaker 4: dudes I don't know, to add to the pieces that
- 7:31Speaker 4: would then push us over the edge, push us to
- 7:34Speaker 4: the point where we're now, year in and year out, a
- 7:37Speaker 4: World Series contending team with these young superstar prospects.
- 7:44Speaker 3: Yeah, you look at a situation like that and you
- 7:46Speaker 3: think we're coming up on our window. You know, we
- 7:50Speaker 3: don't know how long that's actually going to be, but
- 7:52Speaker 3: it's here, it's here, it's here, it's right now. And
- 7:55Speaker 3: you know, for example, like when we had Corbyn Burns
- 7:58Speaker 3: dominated that year, couldn't get him back. The question was
- 8:02Speaker 3: how do you replace that? You know, that's that was
- 8:03Speaker 3: up to the front office try to figure that out.
- 8:06Speaker 3: And you know, certain decisions might be questioned in hindsight,
- 8:08Speaker 3: but you know they made their decisions at the time,
- 8:11Speaker 3: and you know you sit there and you say, regardless
- 8:13Speaker 3: of what they have going on, I need to continue
- 8:15Speaker 3: to perform at you know what I believe to be
- 8:17Speaker 3: my peak to give us the best chance in every
- 8:19Speaker 3: single day regardless.
- 8:21Speaker 4: All Right, you had a thirty thirty season. Louise Robert
- 8:24Speaker 4: just got traded to the Mets. Everybody talks about, you know,
- 8:28Speaker 4: back in twenty twenty one, Cedric Mowns did this, back
- 8:30Speaker 4: in twenty twenty three, Louis Robert did this. How hard
- 8:34Speaker 4: is it to try to recapture that season because Louise
- 8:39Speaker 4: Robert's going to try to do that as he's about
- 8:41Speaker 4: to go to free agency, And how hard is it
- 8:43Speaker 4: to say, Okay, I may never do that again.
- 8:47Speaker 6: If all I'm.
- 8:48Speaker 4: Trying to do is chase that season and not be
- 8:50Speaker 4: the best I can be today.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I definitely felt that after that season. I was
- 8:59Speaker 2: chasing that.
- 9:00Speaker 3: I was chasing that and for me to know myself
- 9:03Speaker 3: as not being the most powerful guy.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Out there on the field.
- 9:07Speaker 3: I do know I have some pop, but I remember
- 9:10Speaker 3: that season and I had home runs and bunches like
- 9:12Speaker 3: it was almost abnormal feeling that year, and you know,
- 9:17Speaker 3: but the swing was just clicking and good things were
- 9:19Speaker 3: happening when I was, you know, just being myself, stand
- 9:22Speaker 3: short to the ball, using all fields and then the
- 9:25Speaker 3: power will coming to play when there was a mistake made,
- 9:27Speaker 3: so just getting back to that athleticism that I had
- 9:29Speaker 3: in that swing is really what I'm aimed for for,
- 9:33Speaker 3: you know, this season and beyond it was it just
- 9:34Speaker 3: felt like things kind of got out of hand in
- 9:36Speaker 3: terms of how I was looking at metrics and how
- 9:40Speaker 3: I wanted the swing to look and things of that nature,
- 9:43Speaker 3: and it took away from what made that season great.
- 9:47Speaker 7: Said, You're now on the rais and they have a
- 9:48Speaker 7: thing there that they do with the Rais Way. Now
- 9:50Speaker 7: you got to play against the Raiser your entire career.
- 9:53Speaker 7: Are you excited to see what they figured out that
- 9:55Speaker 7: no other organization has figured out, because you know, it
- 9:58Speaker 7: seems like everyone that goes there just miraculously becomes like
- 10:01Speaker 7: a ten war player. So I can't wait for you
- 10:04Speaker 7: to come back on at the end of the year,
- 10:05Speaker 7: after you have an unbelievable year and say, well, the
- 10:07Speaker 7: Raise Way was blake.
- 10:12Speaker 3: I said he when I come back, I probably won't
- 10:14Speaker 3: give out their secrets. I need to hang onto those.
- 10:16Speaker 3: But uh, it's it's I'm excited. Yeah, just like you said,
- 10:21Speaker 3: every time we face them, their pitching gave me trouble,
- 10:24Speaker 3: and I'm gonna sit there and ask to their face,
- 10:26Speaker 3: what did you do to me, like they had an
- 10:28Speaker 3: approach that was very successful, and you know, of course
- 10:31Speaker 3: I'd have my successes here and there, but they were
- 10:33Speaker 3: pretty consistent and they were mixing and uh mashing me
- 10:37Speaker 3: up in different ways. So it wasn't like I was
- 10:39Speaker 3: facing the same guy every time from top to bottom.
- 10:41Speaker 3: They had a good they had good arms, So it
- 10:44Speaker 3: was just a matter of me trying to make my adjustments.
- 10:46Speaker 3: But yeah, I'm sorry for what's going on the show
- 10:48Speaker 3: with them.
- 10:49Speaker 7: Again, you played against the Rays of your entire career,
- 10:51Speaker 7: being in the Alds for almost all your career. Every
- 10:54Speaker 7: year people overlook the Rays. You're now on the Rays.
- 10:58Speaker 7: The Blue Jays almost won the world to the Yankees
- 11:00Speaker 7: are the Yankees. The Red Sox are the Red Sox,
- 11:03Speaker 7: and you came from the Orioles. You know what they
- 11:04Speaker 7: have there and what they have coming. How did the
- 11:07Speaker 7: Rays finish this year? I mean, what, what's your outlook?
- 11:10Speaker 7: Because again, you know this division so well, and every
- 11:13Speaker 7: year we're like, oh, the Jay's the Rays, or the
- 11:15Speaker 7: Jay's the Red Sox, the Yankees, the Raish, they're the Rays, right,
- 11:19Speaker 7: they always figure it out. So how confident are you
- 11:21Speaker 7: that this year again the Rays can figure it out.
- 11:23Speaker 7: How nice is it gonna be when you go back
- 11:26Speaker 7: to Baltimore and you get a standing ovation then you
- 11:29Speaker 7: get a hit to win the game.
- 11:32Speaker 3: Yeah, that's gonna be a fun moment. Yeah, to that point,
- 11:36Speaker 3: just facing Tampa a year after year after year, they
- 11:40Speaker 3: find a way to compete, and I think that's really
- 11:42Speaker 3: where the grit and where they you know, go on
- 11:47Speaker 3: the standings each year.
- 11:49Speaker 2: That's where it comes from.
- 11:50Speaker 3: I mean, they picked guys that no one across the
- 11:53Speaker 3: league would know, but they go out there and compete
- 11:55Speaker 3: the tail off every single day and put results together.
- 11:58Speaker 3: I think that's really what it's all about. You know,
- 12:00Speaker 3: you can have your big name guys, but from a
- 12:02Speaker 3: team aspect, they find a way to really click and
- 12:04Speaker 3: Jail and Mesh work really well together out there every
- 12:07Speaker 3: single day.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Cedric, this was awesome.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Thank you for stopping by during the offseason here. We
- 12:13Speaker 1: should be able to catch you during spring training too,
- 12:15Speaker 1: as we're putting our schedule together. So congrats on the
- 12:17Speaker 1: deal and we'll see you then.
- 12:20Speaker 2: Appreciate it, Fails, looking forward to seeing y'all.
- 12:32Speaker 8: What's up everybody. Welcome back to another episode of Buco Territory.
- 12:36Speaker 8: Presented by the Foul Territory Network. I am your host
- 12:38Speaker 8: Noah Hiles and joining me as always are my wonderful
- 12:41Speaker 8: co host Josh Harrison aka j Hay and platinum Key
- 12:44Speaker 8: aka Mark. And as you can see, we have another
- 12:47Speaker 8: guest on the show. This one comes in the form
- 12:50Speaker 8: of a big free agent signing the Pirates made this offseason.
- 12:54Speaker 8: New left handed power bat, Ryan O'Hearn joins the show.
- 12:57Speaker 7: Ryan.
- 12:57Speaker 8: Welcome on to Bucko Territory.
- 12:59Speaker 6: Man. What's up, fellows, Thanks for having me, Thanks for
- 13:02Speaker 6: copping on.
- 13:04Speaker 8: Welcome. So, Ryan, Pirates fans are obviously really excited to
- 13:09Speaker 8: see you take the field on the North Shore this spring.
- 13:12Speaker 6: I'm sure.
- 13:13Speaker 8: I mean, I've seen you do a couple of interviews already.
- 13:16Speaker 8: Hopefully we can give a couple of different questions that
- 13:19Speaker 8: you haven't been asked and dig into everything that is
- 13:23Speaker 8: Ryan o'hean what makes you? And we're gonna get started
- 13:26Speaker 8: right now with one of the biggest diehard Pirate fans
- 13:30Speaker 8: that I know, Mark aka platinum Key Brian. If you're
- 13:33Speaker 8: on Twitter at all, Ryan, I recommend giving him a foul.
- 13:36Speaker 8: He is like the king of Pirate social media. He
- 13:39Speaker 8: just posts clip after clip after clip, just nothing but
- 13:42Speaker 8: Pirates highlights. He's going to be the one to start
- 13:45Speaker 8: this interview, So go ahead, Mark, kick it off.
- 13:47Speaker 9: Yeah, Ryan, thank you so much for hopping on. I
- 13:50Speaker 9: just want to say Pirates fans are extremely excited.
- 13:54Speaker 8: Man.
- 13:55Speaker 9: I absolutely love the confidence, the belief in this club
- 14:00Speaker 9: and just the way that you express your goals for
- 14:03Speaker 9: this team moving forward. It's refreshing to hear someone committed
- 14:07Speaker 9: to winning and believing that this is a baseball club
- 14:10Speaker 9: that can do that, that can be competitive. So my
- 14:13Speaker 9: first question is what goals do you have for your
- 14:16Speaker 9: time in Pittsburgh, for you, for the team, whatever.
- 14:21Speaker 10: Yeah, I mean, you know, you can talk a big game,
- 14:23Speaker 10: but we still got to go play the games. But I,
- 14:26Speaker 10: you know, I believe that what's the point of joining
- 14:29Speaker 10: something if you don't think that you can succeed there,
- 14:31Speaker 10: you know. And I've spoke on it quite a bit
- 14:34Speaker 10: about the roster and kind of looking at what the
- 14:37Speaker 10: Pirates already had coming into the offseason and what they've added,
- 14:40Speaker 10: and you know, I'm a believer in the team that
- 14:43Speaker 10: we could go out and surprise people. And you know,
- 14:47Speaker 10: I've said it a lot, but it really does start
- 14:49Speaker 10: with pitching in my opinion, and you know, you got
- 14:52Speaker 10: the best picture on earth to start, and then you
- 14:56Speaker 10: know you got great young arms with great stuff behind him,
- 15:00Speaker 10: and so I think that's a great place to start.
- 15:02Speaker 6: And you know, trying to decide where I wanted to
- 15:04Speaker 6: play next.
- 15:05Speaker 10: Year or well this upcoming year, you know, that definitely
- 15:09Speaker 10: was stood out to me.
- 15:11Speaker 6: And as far as goals for the season, you know,
- 15:14Speaker 6: I think I have no problem with stating.
- 15:17Speaker 10: Like, hey, I want to make the playoffs, Like why
- 15:19Speaker 10: why why play a season if you don't, if you're
- 15:22Speaker 10: not trying to make the playoffs, or if that isn't
- 15:24Speaker 10: a goal, you know, I think obviously you got to
- 15:27Speaker 10: take it one day at a time. It's a long season,
- 15:30Speaker 10: and you may have a bad you know, stretch at
- 15:33Speaker 10: some point, but I think the best teams find their
- 15:37Speaker 10: way out of that and find a way to get
- 15:40Speaker 10: that that good mojo going and the good vibes. And
- 15:44Speaker 10: you know, as much as you want to talk about
- 15:45Speaker 10: goals right now here in January, we got to be
- 15:49Speaker 10: that one day at a time mindset, doing whatever we
- 15:51Speaker 10: can to find a way to win a.
- 15:52Speaker 6: Ball game every day.
- 15:53Speaker 10: And then, uh, you know, hopefully we'll look back and
- 15:56Speaker 10: we'll be right on the custom of it at the end.
- 15:57Speaker 6: Of the year. Exactly. Love it.
- 16:00Speaker 9: Are you going to be at Pirates Fats coming up
- 16:02Speaker 9: here next weekend? I know fans are excited to maybe
- 16:05Speaker 9: get a chance to see you, hear from you, maybe
- 16:07Speaker 9: meet you briefly.
- 16:08Speaker 6: Yeah, I'll be there. I'll leave in Friday morning.
- 16:11Speaker 9: Excellent, Absolutely, love it. So I was going through your
- 16:15Speaker 9: game logs. I noticed you had a home run against
- 16:18Speaker 9: the Pirates in twenty eighteen. That was off of Stephen Brault,
- 16:21Speaker 9: but led me to my next question. I noticed that
- 16:23Speaker 9: you hit an m or you hit a home run
- 16:25Speaker 9: in your MLB debut, right, yeah, James Shields, Yeah, j
- 16:31Speaker 9: oh wow, all right, yeah, can you just walk in, James,
- 16:34Speaker 9: What was it like being called up to the show?
- 16:36Speaker 9: What was that day like for you?
- 16:39Speaker 8: Oh?
- 16:40Speaker 10: Man, it was awesome. You know, obviously dream come true,
- 16:44Speaker 10: you work. I was an eighth round pick, never made
- 16:48Speaker 10: it on a super high on any prospect list, I mean,
- 16:52Speaker 10: and then you know, I spent four years in the
- 16:54Speaker 10: minor leagues, got a chance to get called up in
- 16:57Speaker 10: July of twenty eighteen.
- 17:00Speaker 6: My parents made it.
- 17:02Speaker 10: Brother's sister had a family there hit that homer off
- 17:05Speaker 10: of James Shields and you know something I'll remember forever.
- 17:08Speaker 9: That's awesome. Then my final question, so I have to
- 17:12Speaker 9: change hats. Oh that's awesome. Change hats here real quick
- 17:17Speaker 9: to ask you a question now we go. I'm a
- 17:20Speaker 9: fellow diehardy Packers fan. We were talking before. I hear
- 17:23Speaker 9: you're also an owner, owned a couple of shows, family
- 17:27Speaker 9: with season tickets. When was the last time you were
- 17:29Speaker 9: at Lamba?
- 17:31Speaker 10: So week eighteen of last season, I went to Lambo
- 17:35Speaker 10: with my dad and brother in law and a couple
- 17:40Speaker 10: uncles and we watch the Packers play the Bears in
- 17:42Speaker 10: about minus seven with the wind chill, and it was
- 17:47Speaker 10: they lost, which you know, you never phone lose into
- 17:50Speaker 10: the Bears. But anytime you get a chance to go
- 17:52Speaker 10: to Lambo and watching package play is pretty cool. So yeah,
- 17:56Speaker 10: definitely a Packer fan. I know we're struggling a little
- 17:59Speaker 10: bit right now, but hey, yeah, we'll get him next year.
- 18:02Speaker 9: Awesome, appreciate it. Thank you again for having jumping on here.
- 18:06Speaker 6: Yeah, of course.
- 18:08Speaker 8: All right, So Ryan, I'll take over now a lot
- 18:13Speaker 8: of people obviously are familiar with what you achieved in
- 18:15Speaker 8: Baltimore and in the back end of last year with
- 18:18Speaker 8: San Diego. But I want to ask about your time
- 18:20Speaker 8: in Kansas City because it wasn't the easiest start to
- 18:25Speaker 8: your major league career, right, it was some negative war seasons,
- 18:28Speaker 8: you got optioned. I'm sure you know during that time,
- 18:32Speaker 8: there were a lot of difficult lonely drives back to Omaha. Right,
- 18:37Speaker 8: Can you just take us back to that time and
- 18:39Speaker 8: maybe tell us the moment that those hard times Oh
- 18:44Speaker 8: sorry about that. Yeah, Can you just take us back
- 18:47Speaker 8: to that time and just kind of tell us how
- 18:50Speaker 8: those hard times really shaped you into the ballplayer that
- 18:53Speaker 8: you are now.
- 18:57Speaker 10: Yeah, you said there was a lot of hard times
- 18:59Speaker 10: in and some down years in Kansas City. Uh, you
- 19:02Speaker 10: know where I was just trying to fight to stay
- 19:04Speaker 10: on a major league roster, and you know I credit
- 19:08Speaker 10: a lot of those the difficult years is you know,
- 19:10Speaker 10: I really appreciate getting to play now because it's been
- 19:14Speaker 10: taken away from me before. And you know, when someone
- 19:17Speaker 10: tells you, hey, like you're not on the team anymore,
- 19:19Speaker 10: you go on Triple A whatever, and after that happens
- 19:22Speaker 10: a few times, like you know, it's you realize how
- 19:25Speaker 10: hard it is to stick in the major leagues, and
- 19:28Speaker 10: I learned a lot of lessons on the bench in
- 19:29Speaker 10: Kansas City.
- 19:31Speaker 6: I got to watch a lot of baseball, that's.
- 19:33Speaker 10: For sure, and learn from coaches and and kind of
- 19:36Speaker 10: figured out how to stay sharp as best as I could,
- 19:39Speaker 10: and that like pinch hitter role. And then you know,
- 19:41Speaker 10: maybe you get one a b a night, one start
- 19:44Speaker 10: a week. Uh, you know, whatever it may be, you
- 19:46Speaker 10: learn to embrace your role. You try to be the
- 19:49Speaker 10: best teammates that you possibly can and just make the
- 19:52Speaker 10: most of it. And yeah, so I think those times
- 19:56Speaker 10: in Kansas City definitely shaped me in ways and kind
- 20:01Speaker 10: of prepped me for my next opportunity to get regular
- 20:05Speaker 10: playing time.
- 20:06Speaker 6: And when I got to Baltimore, I was like ready
- 20:08Speaker 6: to go.
- 20:10Speaker 10: So I think when I was on the bench a lot,
- 20:12Speaker 10: like I took advantage of that time and I tried
- 20:15Speaker 10: to get better as best as I could without playing
- 20:17Speaker 10: in that many games. And you know, I think a
- 20:21Speaker 10: year after years of that and learning from hitting coaches
- 20:24Speaker 10: in the off season, and then by the time I
- 20:26Speaker 10: got to I got to Baltimore in twenty three and
- 20:30Speaker 10: I got a chance to play quite a bit. I
- 20:32Speaker 10: was just ready to rock, and it seemed like, so,
- 20:35Speaker 10: you know, I definitely credit those down years in Kansas
- 20:37Speaker 10: City because without those times, I don't I don't have
- 20:40Speaker 10: the same resilience. Probably I don't have some.
- 20:43Speaker 6: Of the skills that I have now.
- 20:44Speaker 10: And definitely on the mental side of it, being able
- 20:48Speaker 10: to stay, you know, locked into the game, not give up,
- 20:53Speaker 10: you know, just overcome some tough times I think have
- 20:57Speaker 10: really benefited me in the last few years.
- 21:00Speaker 8: You talked about embracing your role. What type of role
- 21:03Speaker 8: do you hope to have for this Pirates team.
- 21:07Speaker 10: Oh, I want to hit in the middle lineup. I
- 21:08Speaker 10: want to drive in runs. I want to play wherever
- 21:10Speaker 10: they need me on any given night. I know how
- 21:14Speaker 10: baseball is nowadays. There's a lot of different lineups and
- 21:16Speaker 10: guys rotate and they keep that DH spot moving and so,
- 21:20Speaker 10: you know, whatever they need me defensively, I'll be ready
- 21:22Speaker 10: to go.
- 21:22Speaker 6: And then as far as hitting, I want.
- 21:23Speaker 10: To I want to play every day, you know, I
- 21:26Speaker 10: want to face left these righties. I want to hit
- 21:28Speaker 10: the middle lineup and drive in runs. I don't want
- 21:30Speaker 10: to strike out. You don't want to hit some balls
- 21:32Speaker 10: in the river. I want to do whatever we got
- 21:33Speaker 10: to do to help the team.
- 21:34Speaker 6: Win.
- 21:35Speaker 8: Have there been any conversations about where they anticipate you
- 21:39Speaker 8: playing the bulk of your innings this year?
- 21:42Speaker 6: I'm not super specific.
- 21:44Speaker 10: This just kind of told me like a similar role
- 21:46Speaker 10: to I've had what I've had the last few years,
- 21:48Speaker 10: which has been you know, first base, DH, you know,
- 21:51Speaker 10: right field whenever they need me. But you know, I'm
- 21:55Speaker 10: in I'm thirty two, but I'm in pretty good shape.
- 21:57Speaker 10: I feel like I can go out and play wherever
- 21:59Speaker 10: they need me.
- 22:00Speaker 8: And then my last question for you is I was
- 22:02Speaker 8: doing a little recon. I was talking to Andy from
- 22:05Speaker 8: the Baltimore Banner who says hello, and he was telling
- 22:08Speaker 8: me about, uh, your cool bat you had for the
- 22:11Speaker 8: All Star Game and and what it kind of meant,
- 22:15Speaker 8: how it was a little bit bigger than just you know,
- 22:17Speaker 8: about yourself, and it's a cool baseball story. Just wanted
- 22:20Speaker 8: to give you the opportunity to kind of tell that
- 22:22Speaker 8: story a little bit and what what it signified.
- 22:26Speaker 10: Yeah, So at the All Star Game, I used a
- 22:27Speaker 10: bat signed by all the players on the newtown Edgemont
- 22:31Speaker 10: Challenger team.
- 22:32Speaker 6: Which is a group of.
- 22:35Speaker 10: Guys that are you know, they have some disabilities, but
- 22:38Speaker 10: they love the game of baseball, and I've made an
- 22:41Speaker 10: appointment to go up and see him every offseason and
- 22:44Speaker 10: you know, go to their practice. My agent coaches them,
- 22:47Speaker 10: works with them. He's very close with a lot of
- 22:49Speaker 10: the families. And I've come to love the boys over
- 22:51Speaker 10: the years. They've made out, made it out to games
- 22:55Speaker 10: in Philly to see me play. They came out to
- 22:57Speaker 10: Baltimore last year. So when it came to the All
- 23:01Speaker 10: Star Game, they all signed it back for me and
- 23:04Speaker 10: you know, made this awesome video and you know it
- 23:07Speaker 10: made it really special that I could wrap those boys
- 23:09Speaker 10: and give them some love on on the biggest stage
- 23:11Speaker 10: at the All Star Game. But a lot of love
- 23:14Speaker 10: for those boys. Man, the Challenger Angels. They're great people.
- 23:17Speaker 10: They really do bright in the day. Like anytime I
- 23:19Speaker 10: get a chance to see him, my face hurts from
- 23:22Speaker 10: smiling when I would go to leave, just because they
- 23:24Speaker 10: like they bring great energy and you can tell how
- 23:26Speaker 10: much they love baseball, and you know, just human angels
- 23:30Speaker 10: is what I call them. So definitely they got a
- 23:33Speaker 10: special place in my heart.
- 23:34Speaker 2: All right here we go.
- 23:36Speaker 11: First off, welcome again Ryan as Noah and you know
- 23:40Speaker 11: my boy Platinum Key said welcome, appreciate you coming on
- 23:42Speaker 11: the show, and I just got a couple of questions
- 23:45Speaker 11: for you. I feel like I've learned a lot just
- 23:47Speaker 11: listening to Noah. Noah and Mark asked you a couple
- 23:49Speaker 11: of questions. But my first question is going to be
- 23:52Speaker 11: kind of piggybacking off of what Noah asked you about
- 23:54Speaker 11: your role on this team. Obviously, you said you want
- 23:57Speaker 11: to hit in the middle of the lineup, you want
- 23:58Speaker 11: to drive in, run his face, right face lefties. Listen
- 24:01Speaker 11: to your story very very very similar to mine to
- 24:05Speaker 11: where I was on that express back and forth between
- 24:08Speaker 11: Triple A in the major leagues, you know, three years
- 24:12Speaker 11: before I got a chance to play every day, just
- 24:14Speaker 11: wanting that opportunity and listening you speak. You know, you
- 24:17Speaker 11: speak with a lot of confidence because you've been through
- 24:19Speaker 11: the ringer. So I wanted to ask about your role,
- 24:22Speaker 11: not that it is part of your role, but do
- 24:24Speaker 11: you foresee with this being a younger offensive team, that
- 24:27Speaker 11: you can kind of take on a little bit of
- 24:29Speaker 11: that leadership role to kind of help these guys make
- 24:31Speaker 11: you know, some of those adjustments that you know, as
- 24:34Speaker 11: you said, you learned a lot on the bench. You
- 24:35Speaker 11: learn from hitting coaches. I saw myself, you know, learn
- 24:38Speaker 11: a lot of those moments, and whether I wanted to
- 24:41Speaker 11: or realize it or not, I think I was able
- 24:42Speaker 11: to give a lot of information to guys that otherwise
- 24:45Speaker 11: may have not been through what I had been through.
- 24:49Speaker 6: Yeah, no doubt.
- 24:49Speaker 10: I mean, I'm not going to roll up in there
- 24:51Speaker 10: like giving speeches like hey, I'm a guy listening to
- 24:53Speaker 10: me talk, But you know, I'm I'm want to help
- 24:57Speaker 10: out and you know, build relationships with all the guys
- 25:00Speaker 10: as much as possible. If I feel like something needs
- 25:03Speaker 10: to be said, I have no problem saying it. Like
- 25:05Speaker 10: you said, we've uh, you know, seen a lot of
- 25:08Speaker 10: baseball and you've kind of seen how you know, good
- 25:11Speaker 10: leaders work and how maybe not so good leaders work.
- 25:14Speaker 10: And you know, if I feel like I'm there's something
- 25:18Speaker 10: that needs to be said, like I said, I'll say it.
- 25:21Speaker 10: I don't really consider myself like the most vocal leader,
- 25:26Speaker 10: but you know, there's a time and a place and
- 25:29Speaker 10: anything that I can pass along to these guys and
- 25:33Speaker 10: then I'm all for it and like and I want
- 25:35Speaker 10: to learn from them as well.
- 25:36Speaker 6: You know, it's you never stop learning in this game.
- 25:38Speaker 10: It's not like I've got to a point where it's like,
- 25:40Speaker 10: all right, I figured everything out, because that's completely false,
- 25:43Speaker 10: you know, but I think good players, especially at good
- 25:48Speaker 10: offenses and meetings and things like that, everybody talks, you know,
- 25:51Speaker 10: because maybe some guy in the room has had success
- 25:55Speaker 10: off a pitcher that I just can't figure him out,
- 25:57Speaker 10: and you know, like to be able to bounce that
- 25:58Speaker 10: off each other and you know, figure out a way
- 26:01Speaker 10: that you can go get this guy as a team
- 26:02Speaker 10: is everything seems like the best offenses I've been on
- 26:05Speaker 10: are you know, they talk.
- 26:06Speaker 6: To each other.
- 26:07Speaker 10: So yeah, if I can assume some type of leadership
- 26:13Speaker 10: role like that's awesome. If not, like you know, I'm
- 26:15Speaker 10: just gonna roll up in there and be myself and
- 26:17Speaker 10: really looking forward to get to know the guys and
- 26:19Speaker 10: see what they're all about.
- 26:21Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 26:21Speaker 11: Know, for sure, I totally understand everything you're saying. And sometimes,
- 26:26Speaker 11: as you say, you're not the most vocal guy and
- 26:28Speaker 11: you don't have to be everything that you said. I'm
- 26:31Speaker 11: sure it's gonna show on the field because you said,
- 26:33Speaker 11: wherever they want you to play, wherever they want to
- 26:35Speaker 11: line you up, you ready to go, And trust me
- 26:37Speaker 11: from somebody that played in Pittsburgh, that's that's something that's
- 26:42Speaker 11: already gonna have the fans, you know, rooting for you,
- 26:44Speaker 11: and I've played against you and I know what you bring.
- 26:46Speaker 11: So that's something that I'm excited to see and to
- 26:48Speaker 11: hear you speak about. But we also know baseball is
- 26:52Speaker 11: a game of adjustments, man, And just like you are
- 26:56Speaker 11: mentioning you've played for a few different organizations, I have
- 26:59Speaker 11: as well. You know, being traded, going through free agency,
- 27:02Speaker 11: there's a lot of things that go on behind the
- 27:04Speaker 11: scenes that you know, to the naked eye or to
- 27:06Speaker 11: the everyday fan might not notice, but to us it
- 27:10Speaker 11: means everything because we're big on routines. And what do
- 27:15Speaker 11: you think has been your biggest adjustment changing from organization
- 27:18Speaker 11: to organization?
- 27:19Speaker 2: Is it the coaching?
- 27:19Speaker 6: Is it?
- 27:20Speaker 11: You know, getting with a hitting coach, knowing how to
- 27:22Speaker 11: you know, say oh oh, I need to do first
- 27:24Speaker 11: base or outfield like that was one of my biggest
- 27:27Speaker 11: adjustments was knowing that I am specific to I like
- 27:30Speaker 11: to go in a cage at a certain time before
- 27:32Speaker 11: the game, and I'm getting there. So when I got
- 27:34Speaker 11: traded and I signed, you know, I kind of had
- 27:37Speaker 11: to find my footing with guys that.
- 27:39Speaker 2: Were already there.
- 27:41Speaker 11: What would you say has been some of your most challenging,
- 27:44Speaker 11: you know obstacles when you say going from you know,
- 27:47Speaker 11: Kansas City to Baltimore to San Diego and obviously now
- 27:50Speaker 11: here Pittsburgh but a little different territory. But you know,
- 27:53Speaker 11: they all are saying, you know you're changing different places.
- 27:57Speaker 6: Yeah, for sure.
- 27:57Speaker 10: I mean, you know, I'm moving from organs organizations tough
- 28:01Speaker 10: because you know it's like you go from one place
- 28:03Speaker 10: where you know everybody's name and the whole building to
- 28:05Speaker 10: somewhere different and you're the new.
- 28:07Speaker 6: Guy and you got to adjust.
- 28:08Speaker 10: But uh, I mean, in my experience, for the most part,
- 28:11Speaker 10: like all baseball players seem to be the same, you know,
- 28:13Speaker 10: like you got your gamblers, you got you know, you
- 28:16Speaker 10: got your whatever it may be. Like guys, they tend
- 28:20Speaker 10: to fall in the same categories. You find your boys,
- 28:22Speaker 10: the ones you hang out with on the road, like
- 28:25Speaker 10: all of that. So and then at the same time,
- 28:27Speaker 10: you know, you got your coaches, like who's my guy?
- 28:29Speaker 10: Who am I gonna work with in the cage every day?
- 28:32Speaker 10: Which strand coach will I kind of like line up
- 28:34Speaker 10: with my day and all that, you know, So I
- 28:37Speaker 10: have things that I do throughout the day that you
- 28:40Speaker 10: can do anywhere. And I think you just at that,
- 28:42Speaker 10: you know, you know what to do, you know how
- 28:44Speaker 10: to get yourself ready to do your work, and you know,
- 28:48Speaker 10: you make relationships along the way. And then I'll say
- 28:52Speaker 10: one thing when I try. When I got traded to
- 28:54Speaker 10: San Diego last year, it's like you only get two
- 28:56Speaker 10: months with the group, and it's like, I don't know
- 28:58Speaker 10: if I'm going to be here after this.
- 28:59Speaker 6: Season or not, but uh, you know, you try.
- 29:02Speaker 10: I try to learn somebody's name, like every week, somebody
- 29:04Speaker 10: in the in the building, somebody knew every week, just
- 29:06Speaker 10: because you know, just treat people with respect, man, treat
- 29:11Speaker 10: people right, learn their names, learn about them. And I
- 29:14Speaker 10: think ultimately that's going to translate the more comfortable you
- 29:17Speaker 10: feel somewhere, the more people you get to know, the
- 29:19Speaker 10: better you're gonna feel and then play out on the field.
- 29:22Speaker 10: So I get two years, uh you know, as it
- 29:26Speaker 10: stands right now, I get two years with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 29:29Speaker 10: I can't wait to get up in there and learn
- 29:30Speaker 10: everybody's name, learn about them. I'm excited I get a
- 29:33Speaker 10: spring training to kind of break that in because we
- 29:36Speaker 10: all know how important spring training is you know you
- 29:39Speaker 10: that's where you really make your your bonds to start
- 29:42Speaker 10: the season and you get to know these guys. And
- 29:45Speaker 10: so I'm looking forward to that and I'm looking forward
- 29:47Speaker 10: to Pirates Fast as well. There's gonna be a ton
- 29:49Speaker 10: of guys out there, so it'll be cool to get
- 29:50Speaker 10: to know them a little bit. Hopefully we can grab
- 29:53Speaker 10: dinner or something. But yeah, for me, and like you know, man,
- 29:56Speaker 10: it's all about relationships. The more comfortable you feel, the
- 30:00Speaker 10: better you get to know everybody. That kind of stuff
- 30:03Speaker 10: translates out on the field.
- 30:05Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely. Uh.
- 30:07Speaker 11: And another thing that I'm gonna piggyback just to go
- 30:09Speaker 11: with adjustments and a lot of people already know, but
- 30:14Speaker 11: you recently have a big adjustment. You know, you just
- 30:16Speaker 11: had a brand new baby girl, So adjustments are also
- 30:20Speaker 11: gonna be made on the road. And uh, these are
- 30:22Speaker 11: things that you know a lot of people you know,
- 30:25Speaker 11: yes they know you had your kid, but it's also
- 30:27Speaker 11: an adjustment for you, your wife, you know, baby girl. And
- 30:31Speaker 11: just one of those things where what do you think
- 30:32Speaker 11: the biggest adjustment is gonna be? Obviously we know sleep,
- 30:35Speaker 11: but is it gonna be you know, is it gonna
- 30:36Speaker 11: be sleep. Is it gonna be being away from them?
- 30:39Speaker 11: Because I know for me, I can miss sleep. You know,
- 30:42Speaker 11: I felt like I played better when my family was there,
- 30:45Speaker 11: So that was one of the biggest adjustments. So what
- 30:46Speaker 11: do you think is the biggest adjustment possibly this season?
- 30:49Speaker 11: You know, adjusting to life with you know, a new
- 30:52Speaker 11: kid or being away from that kid, missing those moments because.
- 30:55Speaker 2: These are these are real life things that happen.
- 30:58Speaker 10: Yeah, I mean you know that there's it's uh, that's
- 31:00Speaker 10: something I haven't experienced yet. And you know, going on
- 31:04Speaker 10: the road and being away from your family definitely just
- 31:07Speaker 10: got harder for me because I got this baby at home.
- 31:09Speaker 10: But you know, and that's gonna it's gonna be tough,
- 31:13Speaker 10: there's no doubt about it. But you know, luckily, man,
- 31:15Speaker 10: I have a great wife and uh, she's she can
- 31:18Speaker 10: hold down the fort. I got in laws, I got
- 31:22Speaker 10: my parents come to town and.
- 31:24Speaker 6: Help out quite a bit. We got a great support system.
- 31:26Speaker 6: So that's definitely gonna help.
- 31:28Speaker 10: And my wife's like I said, my wife's great. She
- 31:30Speaker 10: gets it, she knows the business. She's been with me
- 31:33Speaker 10: for years. Man, We've gone through this, uh these seasons
- 31:35Speaker 10: together where it's like I gotta go on the road,
- 31:37Speaker 10: she stays home, that kind of thing.
- 31:39Speaker 6: So it's gonna be hard. It's gonna be an adjustment
- 31:42Speaker 6: for sure.
- 31:42Speaker 10: But you know, I've seen guys go through it, and
- 31:46Speaker 10: I know it wears on them, and uh so I'm
- 31:48Speaker 10: gonna just deal with it the best that I can.
- 31:50Speaker 10: You know, there's nothing else that we can do, and
- 31:52Speaker 10: hopefully I'll be still playing by the time Harper is
- 31:55Speaker 10: old enough to come.
- 31:56Speaker 6: And and uh come on the road and all that.
- 31:58Speaker 11: Oh yeah, speak that at two eggs distance for sure.
- 32:01Speaker 11: But yeah, the support system is definitely big. And before
- 32:04Speaker 11: we get out of here, I'm gonna ask you one
- 32:05Speaker 11: more question, because, as I said, routine, all these things
- 32:08Speaker 11: kind of tie into each other. I'm a very picky eater,
- 32:11Speaker 11: so switching team to team, you know you're gonna have
- 32:14Speaker 11: certain staples and cities of food that you should eat
- 32:16Speaker 11: and should not eat different clubhouses. And my question was,
- 32:21Speaker 11: honestly gonna be are you like a superstitious person as
- 32:24Speaker 11: far as what you eat before the game, Because me
- 32:26Speaker 11: being very picky, I would every team I went to,
- 32:29Speaker 11: I needed a smoothie before the game with no banana,
- 32:32Speaker 11: any fruit but no banana and I would do like
- 32:34Speaker 11: a peanut butter and jelly or something like. I couldn't
- 32:36Speaker 11: eat much before games where I got some teammates, it's like, nah,
- 32:39Speaker 11: I need that grilled chicken with you know, rice and
- 32:42Speaker 11: this or that. So do you have anything that you
- 32:44Speaker 11: have to eat or you just kind of go with
- 32:46Speaker 11: the flow.
- 32:47Speaker 6: I'm going with the flow for the most part.
- 32:49Speaker 10: Like I don't want to I want to eat something
- 32:51Speaker 10: that's gonna feel like, you know, it's gonna stick to
- 32:53Speaker 10: my ribs, like I'm gonna I don't want to feel
- 32:54Speaker 10: like I'm hungry at all during the game, and like
- 32:56Speaker 10: I like to snack a little bit during the game.
- 32:58Speaker 10: But no, nothing like that. Where did this superstition come from?
- 33:03Speaker 10: By the way, did you eat something else?
- 33:05Speaker 2: No, it wasn't like no, it wasn't a superstition.
- 33:09Speaker 11: I just could never eat before games just because I
- 33:11Speaker 11: wasn't hungry and it would take me like an hour.
- 33:14Speaker 11: I was a very hot energy guy, so you know,
- 33:17Speaker 11: once the game was ready, you know, I'm like I'm
- 33:18Speaker 11: ready to play, you know, and it's like now I
- 33:20Speaker 11: don't want nothing. You know, if I wouldn't playing, I
- 33:23Speaker 11: think I would eat more. But when I wouldn't playing,
- 33:25Speaker 11: I was like, let me get a smoothie and then
- 33:27Speaker 11: I would eat after the game. But you know, everybody's
- 33:30Speaker 11: different and it wasn't necessarily a superstition. But I know
- 33:32Speaker 11: some dudes that are like, oh, I went four for
- 33:35Speaker 11: four because I had, you know, baking eggs and pancakes
- 33:38Speaker 11: for breakfast.
- 33:38Speaker 2: I'mna do the same thing to morrow. I'm like, na,
- 33:40Speaker 2: you just hit good.
- 33:41Speaker 6: Pictures, bro.
- 33:44Speaker 10: Yeah, dude, I mean honestly, like for me, it's day games,
- 33:48Speaker 10: like day games.
- 33:49Speaker 6: If I show up and I'm like.
- 33:51Speaker 10: Donut, sausage, egg and cheese, some like just not eating
- 33:56Speaker 10: super healthy in the morning, like second inning, I'm like dying.
- 33:59Speaker 10: I feel like if I show up, like you gotta
- 34:01Speaker 10: make that decision right when you get to the yard, Like.
- 34:03Speaker 6: I'm gonna do it, you know what I mean.
- 34:05Speaker 10: Like I'm gonna have a couple eggs with no bacon.
- 34:09Speaker 10: I'm gonna have like a green juice and like something healthy.
- 34:13Speaker 10: Then it's like, damn, all right, I started my day
- 34:14Speaker 10: with good decisions. I'm gonna go to the gym. I'm
- 34:16Speaker 10: gonna go do my pool workout, like I'm gonna get
- 34:18Speaker 10: it ready. To go and then you're thinking yourself in
- 34:20Speaker 10: the sixth inning, you know what I mean, Like I
- 34:22Speaker 10: feel good today, but there are those days where I
- 34:25Speaker 10: show up in that sausage jake and cheese is looking
- 34:27Speaker 10: like next thing. I know, I got an old fashioned
- 34:30Speaker 10: doughnut in my mouth, and I'm like, damn it, this
- 34:31Speaker 10: is gonna be a grind today. But every now I
- 34:34Speaker 10: just try to eat stuff that makes me feel good.
- 34:36Speaker 11: You know, everything's good in moderation. But yeah, that's all
- 34:39Speaker 11: I pretty much got for you. Best of luck this year, man,
- 34:43Speaker 11: And more than anything, you know, I just wish health
- 34:46Speaker 11: to people that are playing. You know, a guy that
- 34:48Speaker 11: played for thirteen years, you know, play with a lot
- 34:51Speaker 11: of guys that didn't get to play as long, that
- 34:53Speaker 11: didn't have as many injuries or more. I just like
- 34:56Speaker 11: to wish people good health because I know if you're healthy,
- 34:58Speaker 11: you're gonna do what you do.
- 34:59Speaker 5: Man.
- 34:59Speaker 11: And I'm exc I have to see you where the
- 35:01Speaker 11: we're the black and yellow and put on for the
- 35:03Speaker 11: four one two. That's the area code of Pittsburgh if
- 35:05Speaker 11: you didn't know.
- 35:05Speaker 10: All right, Josh, thank you so much, man. I always
- 35:08Speaker 10: enjoy watching you play, competing against you so I.
- 35:11Speaker 2: Appreciate having you on the show.
- 35:13Speaker 6: For sure.
- 35:15Speaker 8: Yeah, I think that stands for all of us that Ryan,
- 35:17Speaker 8: thanks so much for coming on, and thank you for
- 35:20Speaker 8: you know that that last answer that was that's valid
- 35:22Speaker 8: even for us who cover baseball. You know, you go
- 35:25Speaker 8: down press dining, you see the suits and everything. It's like,
- 35:28Speaker 8: oh man, I'm gonna have to grind through writing this
- 35:30Speaker 8: game story trainings.
- 35:32Speaker 6: I don't know if I got it.
- 35:35Speaker 9: Yeah, I'm gonna have bad.
- 35:36Speaker 8: Questions in the postgame pressers now because I like crap
- 35:39Speaker 8: during the game.
- 35:40Speaker 7: So now, but in all seriousness, thank you for coming on.
