- 0:00Speaker 1: There's Smokehouse Barbecue here in downtown Hartford. Alongside head coach
- 0:05Speaker 1: Mike Cavanaugh, Adam Jardino with you. We've got Christie Antonio
- 0:08Speaker 1: alongside with Andrew Allison down in Winston Salem. And now
- 0:12Speaker 1: it's time to jump into last weekend's twin bill up
- 0:15Speaker 1: in the Loll at the song Is Center on Friday Night.
- 0:18Speaker 1: A successful performance, a win against a team that had
- 0:23Speaker 1: rattled off a whole bunch of wins in a row.
- 0:25Speaker 1: They'd lost the first game of the season. U Mass
- 0:28Speaker 1: Loll want to aid to their next nine before you
- 0:32Speaker 1: guys put a stop to that. And before we get
- 0:34Speaker 1: into the game, is this a different type of U
- 0:36Speaker 1: Mass Loll team they seem to be for a norm
- 0:40Speaker 1: basian team. Offense has been at a it's been flowing
- 0:44Speaker 1: pretty freely for them this year.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Well, I don't know if well that certainly wasn't the
- 0:49Speaker 2: case this week. That's right, absolutely, but pay before we
- 0:53Speaker 2: get into that. Yeah, Adam, I wanted to, you know,
- 0:57Speaker 2: publicly congratulate Gene orim where I was at the game
- 1:00Speaker 2: last week. Yeah, twelve hundred and seventeen wins and he's
- 1:05Speaker 2: probably going he's going for twelve eighteen, I think tonight
- 1:07Speaker 2: right against Oregon State. But when you think about that
- 1:11Speaker 2: and put that just forty years of thirty wins a
- 1:16Speaker 2: year is just incredibly it's truly remarkable, and it's just
- 1:22Speaker 2: so fortunate. I was thinking on the flight yesterday that
- 1:26Speaker 2: I was I was there for Jerry Yorke's record setting win,
- 1:31Speaker 2: and I get to watch Gino's record setting win. And
- 1:35Speaker 2: to be able to have coached with two icons like that,
- 1:38Speaker 2: I've been really fortunate in my life.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what I mean. That was the first thing
- 1:42Speaker 1: that came to mind, is that you got to coach
- 1:44Speaker 1: alongside a guy with eleven hundred college hockey wins. You know,
- 1:49Speaker 1: say what you will about Gino and that number, it's
- 1:51Speaker 1: the most ever, it seems as unbreakable as Jerry York's now.
- 1:57Speaker 1: I mean, those two, it's just incomprehensible. When you break
- 2:00Speaker 1: it down to the numbers that you just did. Forty
- 2:02Speaker 1: years of thirty wins a year, it's it's, yeah, unbelievable.
- 2:06Speaker 2: And Jerry was fifty years of twenty wins a year
- 2:09Speaker 2: or more, and that's the twenty wins in hockey is
- 2:13Speaker 2: a great season. And to do that for fifty years
- 2:16Speaker 2: straight is just again unfathomable. So my hat's off to
- 2:20Speaker 2: both of them.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Yeah, and I know we've talked about your relationship with
- 2:23Speaker 1: Gino often on this show, but I think it's worth revisiting.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Do you have a signature piece of advice that when
- 2:30Speaker 1: you maybe you've said it so much to a player
- 2:33Speaker 1: or to another coach that you almost forget that it
- 2:36Speaker 1: originally came from Gina from him.
- 2:41Speaker 2: I don't know if there's just one specific thing. There's
- 2:43Speaker 2: so many things that I've learned from him over the
- 2:45Speaker 2: years that I've been here at Yukon that I don't
- 2:49Speaker 2: know if there's just one thing, you know. But the
- 2:52Speaker 2: thing that I don't think a lot of people understand
- 2:54Speaker 2: about Gino is how balanced he is. It's not just
- 2:57Speaker 2: basketball for him. He's not married to the basket well.
- 3:00Speaker 2: He has so many other interests in life, and I
- 3:02Speaker 2: think that makes him truly special.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Jim Morris said in a press conference about the same
- 3:07Speaker 1: thing that every time he's had a couple of dinners
- 3:11Speaker 1: with Gino, he always walks away and thinks, why did
- 3:14Speaker 1: I have my phone out just record the audio? He
- 3:16Speaker 1: just feels like he walks away and he can't even
- 3:18Speaker 1: remember half of the wisdom that was passed along.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Well, it would certainly be r rated, so I'm not
- 3:22Speaker 2: sure I would record it.
- 3:23Speaker 1: But bla blackmail never heard anybody.
- 3:27Speaker 2: All Right, that's enough on Gino. Let's get back to the.
- 3:31Speaker 1: But yet, for that game against UMass loll, you know,
- 3:34Speaker 1: you guys are able to on Friday get out. It's
- 3:37Speaker 1: a scoreless first period, but then you put a couple
- 3:40Speaker 1: of goals on him in the second. You keep on rolling.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Four goals against a U mass little Team's a pretty
- 3:46Speaker 1: good night.
- 3:46Speaker 2: It's a great night, and you don't do that often.
- 3:50Speaker 2: But the thing was, I think it's a typical norm
- 3:52Speaker 2: Basin team. They play hard, they're physical, it's tough to
- 3:55Speaker 2: get to their net. And that was probably the issue
- 3:58Speaker 2: for us on Saturday night was you know, we still
- 4:01Speaker 2: we got some chances, but we didn't get enough second
- 4:05Speaker 2: and third chances against that team, and that's what you
- 4:08Speaker 2: need against them. So but it was a good battle. Listen,
- 4:13Speaker 2: if you tell me that we're gonna go up there
- 4:15Speaker 2: and we're only going to give up two goals on
- 4:16Speaker 2: the weekend, I'd feel pretty good about our chances on
- 4:19Speaker 2: the weekend of being successful, So it was unfortunate we
- 4:23Speaker 2: had trouble scoring on Saturday night, but I still like
- 4:26Speaker 2: the way we played on Friday.
- 4:29Speaker 1: The goal at the end of the second period came
- 4:31Speaker 1: with about ninety seconds lap, then Hudson Shandor that was
- 4:34Speaker 1: a Joey Muldowney gold and Hudson Shandor and the third
- 4:36Speaker 1: made it three nothing thirty seconds in. The assists though,
- 4:40Speaker 1: a couple of them came from Ethan Gardulla on each
- 4:42Speaker 1: of those two goals. And I don't think we've talked
- 4:44Speaker 1: a whole lot about him, but a freshman, where is
- 4:46Speaker 1: his game at at this stage of the season.
- 4:49Speaker 2: I think he's in a good place. The thing I
- 4:51Speaker 2: like about Ethan is people don't realize how big he is.
- 4:53Speaker 2: He's six two and he's thick. He protects pucks. He
- 4:57Speaker 2: he's a heavy hockey player, and on top of that,
- 5:01Speaker 2: he has a lot of He has comfortable skill what
- 5:03Speaker 2: I call He can play at pace and still make
- 5:06Speaker 2: the same sauce pass he makes standing still. So he's
- 5:12Speaker 2: a player that I think we're gonna his best hockey's
- 5:16Speaker 2: in front of him, that's for sure.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Joey Muldowney had one of those goals. And so he's
- 5:20Speaker 1: a sophomore from Lakeview, New York. He seemed like one
- 5:24Speaker 1: of the guys last year that was just close that
- 5:27Speaker 1: he was just sniffing that. There's a long list of
- 5:29Speaker 1: guys last year that just maybe didn't put up quite
- 5:31Speaker 1: the numbers that they had hoped. Are you seeing him
- 5:34Speaker 1: take that step forward in his sophomore year.
- 5:36Speaker 2: No question about it. He's been dynamite and right from
- 5:38Speaker 2: the get go, I'd like to see pucks going in
- 5:41Speaker 2: for him. He had some great He probably had our
- 5:43Speaker 2: best two chances on Saturday night as well. So he's
- 5:47Speaker 2: a kid that plays in a lot of situations for us,
- 5:49Speaker 2: and I love where he's trending right now.
- 5:53Speaker 1: So, after the upper body injury to Tyler Muslik the
- 5:57Speaker 1: previous weekend, Callum Tongue gets the nod end goal and
- 6:00Speaker 1: he stopped twenty six out of twenty seven shots against him.
- 6:04Speaker 1: And so how did you grade out his performance on Friday.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Anytime a goaltender gives up one goal both nights, yeah,
- 6:15Speaker 2: you're pretty fortunate. So I thought he was fantastic. You know,
- 6:19Speaker 2: he hadn't played much, hadn't played at all this season,
- 6:22Speaker 2: and for him to come in against you know, a
- 6:24Speaker 2: ranked team who's ninth in the pair wise and play
- 6:27Speaker 2: the way he did. I think, you know, that was
- 6:30Speaker 2: a great start for him in his college career.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Yeah, And obviously in that situation with Tyler muslick out
- 6:39Speaker 1: and then he and he is healthy. And so do
- 6:42Speaker 1: you go into the weekend with a guy like Callum saying, hey,
- 6:46Speaker 1: don't look over your shoulder on Friday, you're going to
- 6:49Speaker 1: get the start on Saturday, or do you still give
- 6:51Speaker 1: it to him day by day?
- 6:52Speaker 2: It's day by day. Yeah. I think that's for all
- 6:55Speaker 2: our players. It's not just unique to a Goaltender's got
- 7:00Speaker 2: to be something that all our players have to understand.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Every game is day by day, and you can't assume
- 7:09Speaker 2: that you're going to be in the lineup the next
- 7:11Speaker 2: game just because you're Hudson chandor or your kalum tongue
- 7:15Speaker 2: or you're John Spetz. The great players never assume they're
- 7:19Speaker 2: going to be in the lineup. They always compete like
- 7:22Speaker 2: their jobs on the line.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Yeah, and you know, before we go to break, I
- 7:26Speaker 1: think that that's a pretty good answer. But maybe is
- 7:30Speaker 1: there a guy that you can identify and say, no,
- 7:32Speaker 1: this this player really plays where his feet are. He
- 7:36Speaker 1: doesn't think about the distractions. Is there somebody that when
- 7:39Speaker 1: you think about going to work and putting your head down,
- 7:42Speaker 1: is there somebody on the team that's maybe better, not
- 7:44Speaker 1: better than others, but just really good at.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Bat well Hudson for sure. Yeah, he's a player that
- 7:51Speaker 2: he just takes one day at a time. There's no
- 7:53Speaker 2: question about that. You know, I think probably Tabor. He
- 7:59Speaker 2: slips a kid who comes in and you know what
- 8:01Speaker 2: you're gonna get from him every single day. We actually
- 8:03Speaker 2: we got a lot of players like that. Ryan Tattle,
- 8:07Speaker 2: he's a very emotional player, but he's still every day
- 8:12Speaker 2: you know, I know what kind of effort we're gonna
- 8:14Speaker 2: get from Ryan Tattle.
- 8:16Speaker 1: We'll be back with more Head coach Mike Cavanaugh just
- 8:18Speaker 1: after this and has promised later on. We've got guy
- 8:21Speaker 1: jam Beorea, We've got Kayden Shahan and that's all still
- 8:25Speaker 1: to come. Right before women's basketball pregame show tips off
- 8:28Speaker 1: at seven o'clock, with the actual tip off at seven thirty.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Madam Jardino, this is Yukon men's ice hockey from Learfield
