- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Friday.
- 0:15Hey, hey, you've made it to the end of another week.
- 0:18It's the 30th of May. And Can you believe it?
- 0:20Next week we will be in June. Ah, but that's next week.
- 0:23We are still in May. And as it's a Friday, we are
- 0:27going to open up the book of Proverbs again, and a little bit
- 0:31controversially, as yes, you may have noted that I have changed
- 0:35the way I read it back to the original when we repeat the
- 0:38proverbs, reading them through from the first to the last, and
- 0:42then reading them through again, rather than each one twice.
- 0:46And if you thought politics was divisive, there are some strong
- 0:50opinions on either side of the camp, friends.
- 0:52But I'm afraid this is the way I feel like we should be reading
- 0:56it. It gives us the opportunity to
- 0:58hear much more clearly these these themes and these petitions
- 1:03that come in the groupings of Proverbs rather than each one by
- 1:07itself. But ultimately, whether we read
- 1:10it one way or the other, what is important is that as we read it,
- 1:15we've got Proverbs one verse 7 bouncing around in our heads as
- 1:19the lens through which we read all of them, which is the fear
- 1:24of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.
- 1:27So as we hear all of these different pithy little
- 1:30statements of wisdom and knowledge, we know that all of
- 1:34these only make sense when we hear them and live them out
- 1:38knowing that there is a mighty God who loves us.
- 1:41So in that spirit, friends, it's time to dive in.
- 1:45And today we're going to read together Proverbs 13 seven to
- 1:4912. Some who are poor pretend to be
- 2:03rich. Others who are rich pretend to
- 2:06be poor. The rich can pay a ransom for
- 2:10their lives, but the poor won't even get threatened.
- 2:16The life of the godly is full of light and joy, but the light of
- 2:21the wicked will be snuffed out. Pride leads to conflict.
- 2:27Those that take advice are wise. Wealth from get rich quick
- 2:32schemes quickly disappears. Wealth from hard work grows over
- 2:37time. Hope deferred makes the heart
- 2:42sick. But a dream fulfilled is a tree
- 2:46of life. And again, some who are poor
- 2:53pretend to be rich, others who are rich pretend to be poor.
- 2:59The rich can pay a ransom for their lives, but the poor won't
- 3:03even get threatened. The life of the godly is full of
- 3:08light and joy, but the light of the wicked will be snuffed out.
- 3:14Pride leads to conflict. Those who take advice are wise.
- 3:19Wealth from get rich quick schemes quickly disappears.
- 3:23Wealth from hard work grows over time.
- 3:28Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a dream fulfilled is a
- 3:34tree of life. Oh Lord, I'm so aware that many
- 3:47times as people speak about faith in you and the benefits of
- 3:50living a life of faith, they talk about the afterlife.
- 3:53They talk about our citizenship in heaven and that we can wait
- 3:58for that glorious day when we meet you face to face in heaven
- 4:03to receive the good things of of your Kingdom.
- 4:07But Lord, you promise us a change now.
- 4:09You promise us companionship and a change of identity and
- 4:14membership in your family and your embrace and your love in
- 4:17your Kingdom now and today, right here in the midst of our
- 4:22lives in this broken place, the world in which we live.
- 4:27So Lord, as as you speak about hope deferred, making the heart
- 4:31sick, Lord, I pray that we would not only cast our eyes
- 4:35heavenward, that we would see you in the here and now so that
- 4:40we can have our dreams fulfilled.
- 4:43Our dreams of standing on a firm foundation, our dreams of being
- 4:48loved unconditionally, our dreams of being freed from our
- 4:52failures of the past. Lord, these are things you offer
- 4:57us now and that as these dreams are fulfilled, as the proverb
- 5:02says, may this be like a tree of life with deep roots spreading
- 5:09down, giving us this firm foundation and branches of
- 5:13influence and love bearing outward to provide shade and
- 5:18fruit for those around us. Our Lord, the gift of your
- 5:24presence in our lives, the deal that you offer us is truly
- 5:28remarkable, not only in eternity, but right now.
- 5:33Thank you. We claim your promises today in
- 5:37our lives. May they transform us from this
- 5:40moment so that this world can be touched by your presence through
- 5:45us now. We praise you, our incredible
- 5:49God, and pray all of this through the name of your Son,
- 5:52Jesus, Amen.
