- 0:09the very best morning routine.
- 0:11After all
- 0:13The way you begin is how you keep going, right?
- 0:16If every day feels like it's always falling apart, then clearly you
- 0:21need a better morning routine.
- 0:23And what better way to find the perfect morning routine that's
- 0:27gonna fix everything than to watch an hour or more of YouTube
- 0:32videos all about morning routines?
- 0:35Sorry
- 0:36Well, here you go.
- 0:36This is the last video you need on morning routines because the
- 0:41reality is you do not need to copy anyone else's morning routine.
- 0:47You don't need more information
- 0:50And you don't really need more motivation either
- 0:54You need to let go of your perfectionism
- 0:58Hi, I'm Misty Winkler, and you've found the Christian homemaking
- 1:00podcast, Simply Convivial.
- 1:04Convivial means enjoying life together, and that's the kind of home atmosphere
- 1:09that we want to create as Christian moms
- 1:12I've been married for 25 years, have five kids, two grandkids, and homeschool
- 1:19I'm also author of the book Home Is for Hospitality: Why
- 1:23Your Home and Homemaking Matter
- 1:25Now, grab a basket of laundry to fold and let's talk about morning routines
- 1:31I know it feels like if your day gets off to a rough start, then the whole
- 1:39rest of the day is going to be shot.
- 1:42Or if it feels like all your days are falling apart by lunch,
- 1:47it makes sense to look to the mornings and try to iron that out.
- 1:53But the truth is, mornings are not magic
- 1:58If your morning gets off track or doesn't start the way that you hope,
- 2:03you are not stuck with a bad day for the rest of the day And it's also true
- 2:09if you execute your morning routine flawlessly and have an awesome quiet
- 2:16time an hour before the kids get up and get your exercise in and your coffee
- 2:20just right, that's no guarantee that the rest of the day is gonna go your way.
- 2:25Mornings are not magic
- 2:28Figuring out the perfect morning routine, one that works for your friend or your
- 2:33favorite YouTube personality, is not going to make all the difference in your life
- 2:40In fact, when we do get our morning routine dialed in and it's working really
- 2:46well for us, it's really not that we have the ideal morning routine, but it's
- 2:53usually an indication that we are willing to do what we are supposed to do and we
- 3:01persist in doing that until persistence becomes normal and therefore easier.
- 3:08But we need that kind of persistence and willingness to do the right
- 3:13next thing at all times of the day
- 3:17And when we practice that skill first thing in the morning
- 3:20We're then better able to do it the next morning, but also throughout the day.
- 3:26Because every time you practice persistence at any time of the day, you're
- 3:33going to continue to improve that skill.
- 3:36You're putting in the reps, but every rep counts, not just morning.
- 3:42Morning reps don't even count double They are the same weight as any other time that
- 3:48you choose to do the right next thing.
- 3:51So that means no matter how your morning went this morning, today, you can do the
- 3:57right next thing No matter how fussy the kids were or how messy your house is,
- 4:04today you can do the right next thing
- 4:08Today, you can turn it around.
- 4:11You don't have to wait for tomorrow.
- 4:13You don't have to wait for the next Monday
- 4:16You can turn things around right now Smile and start is one of my
- 4:21favorite little mottos, and I have two ways that you can do that.
- 4:25The more you persist in doing the right next thing, the better any morning
- 4:33routine will work and the better your day will go at any point of the day
- 4:39So here are my two tips for turning around your day and getting the day off to a good
- 4:46start, whether it's morning or lunchtime or afternoon or even after dinner.
- 4:53No matter what time of the day it is, you can start off on a better foot right
- 4:59now So the first thing you need to do when you realize that your day has gone
- 5:04off track and you need to reset and realign is to use an alignment card.
- 5:11This is my term for a Bible verse or a motto or a quote that brings
- 5:18you back into line with truth
- 5:22Truth is a reality outside of us.
- 5:26We don't find it by looking inward, and whatever pops into our head is
- 5:32more likely than not to not be true.
- 5:36We can't necessarily trust it.
- 5:38We have to take whatever thoughts or feelings that we have, especially thoughts
- 5:43or feelings about being stuck, and match them up to what God's word says
- 5:49If they don't match, if they don't align, we change our thoughts We
- 5:54take in the scripture, we take in the truth, and let that determine our next
- 6:01thoughts We let that be the interpretive grid that we filter our life through
- 6:08So take a minute, grab a, an index card or a Post-it note and write a scripture
- 6:14that has been speaking to you lately
- 6:16Maybe just write smile on an index card or Post-it Note.
- 6:21Or my favorite, smile and start
- 6:24Rejoice always.
- 6:25Again, I will say rejoice
- 6:27Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all for the glory of God.
- 6:32Pick a scripture, any scripture, write it down, and then read it
- 6:37several times throughout the day.
- 6:39Put it up in a very visible spot in your house, your bathroom mirror,
- 6:44or in front of your kitchen sink, or right above your coffee maker, on your
- 6:49fridge, on your planner, on your phone.
- 6:52Maybe put a different one in all of these places or even the same one if you
- 6:58really want to double down on applying that scripture to your life right now
- 7:05When your thoughts are then aligned to truth and you are repeating truth to
- 7:11yourself throughout the day, then you need to get started doing the right next thing
- 7:18But I know it's hard to tell what the right next thing to do is because you
- 7:24have a million things you could be doing.
- 7:26So here's my little trick.
- 7:28Get a timer
- 7:30Maybe a literal timer?
- 7:32That you set?
- 7:33Or your watch, or the oven, or the microwave, an actual timer for 10
- 7:39minutes Spend that 10 minutes doing something, anything, taking care of an
- 7:46area of your house that's bothering you.
- 7:48Wash the dishes by hand for 10 minutes.
- 7:52Fold the laundry for 10 minutes.
- 7:55Something that's been piling up and you feel bad about, but you don't know
- 7:59when you're gonna get around to it, and so it just accumulates, and you keep
- 8:04feeling guilty about it, but it just sits there because it feels like it's
- 8:08gonna take for forever, and you don't know when you'll be able to deal with it.
- 8:12You definitely don't know when you'll have time to finish it.
- 8:15You don't need to deal with it.
- 8:17You don't need to finish it.
- 8:18You just need to put some time and attention there.
- 8:22Do it for 10 minutes
- 8:24And you will be amazed at the change
- 8:27You will notice how effective your time and attention is because you will
- 8:33get farther than you thought you could
- 8:36You will find it easier to get started and stay focused because you're only
- 8:40doing it for 10 minutes instead of dreading a full, complete Job It doesn't
- 8:47matter how many dishes there are or how long it will take to do them all.
- 8:51Just wash some of the dishes.
- 8:54See how many you can wash within 10 minutes.
- 8:56It's just a little experiment you're running
- 8:59Spend 10 minutes clearing and washing your dining room table
- 9:03or tidying up the living room, or sorting through that paper
- 9:07pile that you're dreading
- 9:08If you've been going around looking for the perfect morning routine to
- 9:13copy so that your days can get started just right and therefore continue
- 9:19on just right, then I know you struggle with perfectionism like I do
- 9:26And perfectionism prevents us from even getting started because we don't wanna get
- 9:32started unless we're going to do it right and unless we're going to get it done.
- 9:37And that is why we have so many undone piles and jobs and tasks and cleaning
- 9:44things to do accumulating all around us
- 9:49The perfectionism is a problem, not a virtue.
- 9:54It's an obstacle that we can learn how to jump over and avoid and overcome
- 10:03It's not a pet that we should be keeping and treating as an essential
- 10:07part of us If you are a perfectionist, you don't have to stay that way.
- 10:12That is not an essential part of your person And you're going to be better
- 10:16off if you let that part of you go.
- 10:19Trust me.
- 10:20Been there and done that.
- 10:21And the 10-minute timer
- 10:23Is one of my secret weapons against perfectionism because it
- 10:29completely removes that option of knowing exactly the right thing
- 10:33to do and doing it till it's done.
- 10:37You're just doing something, anything for 10 minutes, noticing how it went.
- 10:43It's an experiment.
- 10:45It's only 10 minutes.
- 10:46It's low stakes, and yet you will get so much more done.
- 10:52You'll see so much more progress than you thought possible, and you can do a
- 10:5710-minute timer at any point of the day First thing in the morning, lunchtime,
- 11:04afternoon during kids' naps, after dinner
- 11:07And when you put 10 minutes of focused work time into anything, your mood lifts.
- 11:14Your mood lifts and your motivation lifts And you feel capable of doing more.
- 11:24Whereas listening to the perfectionist story in your head makes you
- 11:28feel capable of less, makes you feel more and more uncertain
- 11:34But you don't need certainty.
- 11:36You just need 10 minutes doing something good right in front of you After that
- 11:4210 minutes, you'll have more clarity about what you should do after that.
- 11:46And those 10-minute increments just build, even if they are
- 11:50not one right after the other
- 11:52You don't need a slow morning.
- 11:54You don't need an ideal morning
- 11:57The morning is not magic that you can sprinkle on the rest of your day
- 12:02Every day, all throughout the day, we are simply continuing to
- 12:07persistently do the right next thing.
- 12:11And every time we practice doing the right next thing, we continue
- 12:16to get better and better at doing so
