Latest / My Playful Wife — A Tender Literary Love Story / My Playful Wife — Season 1, Episode 48: The First Lesson
Transcript
- 0:00My playful wife. Until I could hear it. Until
- 0:05I stopped thinking it was dull and realized I'd
- 0:08just been deaf. I felt her smile against my shoulder.
- 0:12I'm the ninth day version. It just took me about
- 0:16two years instead of nine days. Tara came to
- 0:22the workshop on the first real morning expecting
- 0:24to be taught something, and Saloni taught her
- 0:27nothing, on purpose, for nine days, and very
- 0:31nearly lost her over it. I had this from both
- 0:35of them, over the weeks, from Saloni at our table
- 0:38in the evenings, and from Tara herself, much
- 0:41later, when she had come far enough to laugh
- 0:44about it. But that first morning there was no
- 0:46laughing. Terra arrived hungry, electric, ready
- 0:51to be shown the secret advanced things, the clever
- 0:54cuts, the master techniques that would let her
- 0:57leap ahead of her peers and begin, at last, her
- 1:01ascent. And Saloni handed her a bolt of the plain
- 1:05undyed base, the cheapest, dullest cloth in the
- 1:08room, the nothing cloth, the blank, and a pair
- 1:12of scissors she was not to use and said, don't
- 1:15cut anything. Don't make anything. For now, just
- 1:19learn this cloth. Sit with it. Handle it. Find
- 1:23out what it wants before you ever ask it for
- 1:26anything. Come back to me when you can tell me
- 1:29what it does on the bias without cutting it.
- 1:31That's the first lesson. And then she walked
- 1:36away and left her first apprentice sitting at
- 1:38a new table with a bolt of the dullest cloth
- 1:41in deli and instructions, essentially, to do
- 1:45nothing with it. for as long as it took. I confess
- 1:48I did not understand it either. At first, when
- 1:52she described it to me, the deliberate withholding,
- 1:55the nine empty days, the apparent waste of a
- 1:58gifted young person's time. It looked, to my
- 2:02untrained eye, exactly like the thing Tara accused
- 2:05it of being, a master keeping the good things
- 2:09back. It was only later, watching what it produced,
- 2:12that I understood I had been making the beginner's
- 2:15error, the same one Tara was making, the error
- 2:18of assuming that teaching is the transfer of
- 2:21content, that to teach is to hand over what you
- 2:24know. Saloni was teaching the opposite way, the
- 2:27deep way, the way that does not hand over anything
- 2:31at all, but instead arranges the conditions under
- 2:34which the student is forced to find the thing
- 2:36herself. It is slower. It is harder to watch.
- 2:40It is the only kind that lasts. Tara lasted about
- 2:46three days before the resistance broke the surface,
- 2:49which Celonie said was longer than she'd expected.
- 2:54She thinks I'm wasting her, Celonie told me on
- 2:57the fourth night, not unsympathetically. She
- 3:01thinks I'm hazing her or testing her patience,
- 3:04or worse. That I'm one of those teachers who
- 3:07keep the good stuff back out of vanity, who make
- 3:10the apprentice grind through pointless drudgery
- 3:12so the master can feel important. She came to
- 3:16me to ascend, and I've sat her down in front
- 3:19of a bolt of nothing and told her to stop. Every
- 3:23instinct, she has a screaming that she's being
- 3:26held back, made to do something beneath her,
- 3:29that the clock of her ambition is running, and
- 3:32I'm stealing days off it for no reason. She turned
- 3:36her cup, and I can't explain it to her. That's
- 3:40the maddening part, the part she'll hate me for,
- 3:43for a while. Because if I explain it, if I say,
- 3:46I'm teaching you to listen, the listening is
- 3:48the whole thing, the cloth will teach you what
- 3:51no technique can, she'll nod and think she understands
- 3:54and she won't, because you cannot understand
- 3:56the lesson by being told it. You can only understand
- 3:59it by sitting with the dull cloth until something
- 4:02happens. The explanation is worthless. The nine
- 4:07days are the lesson. And there's no way to tell
- 4:09her that the boredom and the frustration and
- 4:12the feeling held back are not obstacles to the
- 4:14teaching. They are the teaching. So she has to
- 4:18suffer it without knowing why, and trust me on
- 4:21no evidence, and that's a great deal to ask of
- 4:24a hungry young person, and some of them don't
- 4:26make it and walk out, and I let them, because
- 4:29a maker who can't sit nine days with a dull cloth
- 4:32is not a maker I can teach the deep things to
- 4:35anyway. That seems hard, I said, cruel almost.
- 4:42It's the opposite of cruel, she said. It's the
- 4:46only honest thing. The cruel teachers are the
- 4:49ones who give the hungry student what she's hungry
- 4:51for, the techniques, the shortcuts, the impressive
- 4:54tricks, and send her out fast and skilled and
- 4:58deaf, a brilliant maker of dead things who never
- 5:01learned the one thing that would have made her
- 5:03work alive. That's the cruelty, feeding the hunger
- 5:07instead of teaching the listening. I'm not going
- 5:10to do that to her, even if she hates me for the
- 5:13nine days. Especially then. On the sixth day,
- 5:20Tara confronted her. Celonie had been waiting
- 5:24for it, almost hoping for it, because the ones
- 5:26who confront you are the ones who are still engaged
- 5:29enough to bother. She came and stood in front
- 5:33of me, Celonie said, and she was shaking a little,
- 5:37with the particular fury of a proud person who
- 5:40suspects she's being made a fool of, and she
- 5:42said, I didn't come here to fold cloth. I came
- 5:47to learn from you. I'm good. You know I'm good,
- 5:50you saw it. And you've got me doing an exercise
- 5:53you'd give a child. I have things I want to make.
- 5:56I have a whole life I'm trying to start. And
- 5:59you're spending my days making me stare at a
- 6:02bolt of cloth nobody would ever use. If you don't
- 6:06want to teach me, tell me, and I'll go somewhere
- 6:09that will. Saloni almost smiled, telling it.
- 6:13She was magnificent, furious and proud and completely
- 6:18wrong and absolutely the kind of person worth
- 6:21teaching, because only someone who cares that
- 6:24much would get that angry. What did you tell
- 6:27her? I told her the truth, which I knew she couldn't
- 6:32use yet, but I owed it to her anyway. I said,
- 6:36you think the cloth is the dull part. and the
- 6:39making is the real part. You have it exactly
- 6:42backwards. The making is the easy part. I can
- 6:46teach a competent person to make in a year. The
- 6:49listening is the hard part, the part almost no
- 6:52one ever learns, the part that separates a maker
- 6:55whose things are alive from one whose things
- 6:57are merely well -made. And you cannot learn to
- 7:01listen to a brilliant cloth, a cloth that's doing
- 7:04half the work for you, seducing you with its
- 7:07own beauty. You can only learn to listen to a
- 7:10dull one. The plain base has nothing to offer
- 7:13you but what you can hear in it. That's why I
- 7:16gave it to you. Not to waste you. Because it's
- 7:20the only teacher honest enough to make you do
- 7:23the actual work of listening with no help, no
- 7:26flattery, no shortcut. Stay with the dull cloth,
- 7:31Tara. It is trying to teach you the only thing
- 7:34I actually have to give you. Or go. But if you
- 7:38go, go knowing that what you're running from
- 7:41is the lesson, not the absence of one. And she
- 7:46stayed. She stayed, Saloni said, furious. But
- 7:52she stayed. And that was the moment I knew she
- 7:56might actually become something, because the
- 7:58staying, when every instinct says go, the staying
- 8:01with the dull, true, slow thing when the whole
- 8:04world is offering you the bright, fast, empty
- 8:06one, That's not a small capacity. That's the
- 8:10whole capacity, really. That's the thing the
- 8:13entire craft is built on. She just demonstrated
- 8:17she has it. She doesn't know she demonstrated
- 8:20it. But she did. It happened on the ninth day,
- 8:27the thing Celonie had been waiting for, and Celonie
- 8:30was not even in the room when it came, which
- 8:32she said was exactly right. You can't be watching
- 8:37when it happens, she told me. It's too private.
- 8:40It's a person meeting their own hands for the
- 8:43first time. You don't stand over that. I'd gone
- 8:46out for chai, and I came back and she was sitting
- 8:50completely still with the plain cloth held up
- 8:52to the window light, the way I held the gray
- 8:54-green the day I found it, and she had the look,
- 8:57not the excited look, the other one, the still
- 9:00one, the one that means something has finally
- 9:02gone quiet. And she didn't say anything for a
- 9:06long time. And then she said, almost frightened,
- 9:09it moves differently than I thought. On the bias.
- 9:13I can feel it now. I couldn't before I was looking
- 9:17at it, but I couldn't feel it. It's been telling
- 9:20me the whole time, and I wasn't listening. I
- 9:24thought it was a dull cloth. It isn't dull. I
- 9:27was just deaf. Saloni's eyes were bright, telling
- 9:32me this. With a particular pride that has nothing
- 9:35of ego in it, the pride of a person watching
- 9:38a thing they love be successfully handed on.
- 9:41I have seen that particular pride only a few
- 9:44times and never in connection with anything a
- 9:47person did for themselves. It is not the pride
- 9:50of achievement. It is something quieter and rarer.
- 9:53The pride of transmission. The joy of having
- 9:57got a true thing safely across the gap between
- 9:59one person and another. Parents have it, sometimes,
- 10:04watching a grown child do well the thing they
- 10:07try to teach. Real teachers have it. It is, I
- 10:11think, the purest form of pride there is, because
- 10:14there is no self in it. Saloni gained nothing
- 10:17from Tara's breakthrough, added nothing to her
- 10:20own name or fortune. She simply watched a thing
- 10:24she loved take root in new ground, and was glad,
- 10:27the way you are glad when something you planted
- 10:30comes up. That's it, she said. That's the whole
- 10:35lesson, and she got it in her own hands on the
- 10:39ninth day, with nobody telling her. She'll spend
- 10:42the next ten years learning technique, and that
- 10:45part one can teach her easily now because the
- 10:48technique will be in service of the listening
- 10:50instead of a substitute for it. But the listening,
- 10:53the actual capacity to feel what a cloth wants,
- 10:57to tell the true thing from the merely impressive,
- 11:00To hear what goes quiet. She has it now. It's
- 11:04hers. Nobody can take it back out of her hands.
- 11:07I didn't put it in. I couldn't have. You can't
- 11:11put it in. I just took away everything else until
- 11:14she had no choice but to find it in herself.
- 11:17That's all teaching ever is the real kind. Not
- 11:21putting things into people. Taking away everything
- 11:24that's keeping them from hearing what's already
- 11:27in them. I wrote that sentence down before she'd
- 11:33finished saying it because it stopped me the
- 11:35way the truest things she says always do and
- 11:39because I recognized it intimately from the inside.
- 11:43That is what she had done to me. Across the whole
- 11:46remade marriage, across the fortnight of the
- 11:49offer, across every silence she kept at the right
- 11:53moment, she had never once put anything into
- 11:57me. She had not taught me to love her better
- 11:59the way you teach a fact. She had not installed
- 12:03the awareness, the attention, the capacity to
- 12:06stay awake. She had simply, patiently, with enormous
- 12:10discipline, taken away everything that was keeping
- 12:13me from hearing what was already in me. The noise,
- 12:17the defendedness, the habit of leading with my
- 12:20reactions, the sleepwalking, until the man I
- 12:23actually was underneath all of it had no choice
- 12:25but to surface. I had thought for years that
- 12:29she was changing me. She was not changing me.
- 12:32She was uncovering me. The whole project of love,
- 12:36done well, I understood. Writing it down is not
- 12:40the addition of new qualities to a person, but
- 12:42the subtraction of everything that stands between
- 12:45them and the truest version of themselves they
- 12:48already, secretly, contain. You do not improve
- 12:51the people you love. You excavate them. I had
- 12:55spent the early years of our marriage, the sleeping
- 12:57years, doing the opposite, trying in my clumsy
- 13:00way to add things to Celonie, to improve her,
- 13:04to fix the parts of her that inconvenienced me,
- 13:07as though love were a renovation project and
- 13:10she a house with faults to correct. It never
- 13:13worked, of course. It only ever made her smaller
- 13:16and warier, because being improved by someone
- 13:19is indistinguishable from the inside, from being
- 13:22told you are not enough as you are. The remaking
- 13:25of our marriage had run the other direction entirely.
- 13:28We had stopped trying to improve each other and
- 13:31started. Instead, the slow, tender work of clearing
- 13:35away everything that kept each of us from being
- 13:37fully the person we already were. That is the
- 13:40only renovation that ever makes a person larger
- 13:43instead of smaller. And the deepest teaching
- 13:46in a workshop or a marriage is the same single
- 13:50act. The patient removal of everything that keeps
- 13:53a person from meeting their own hands. That evening,
- 13:59Saloni was quiet in the good way, the satisfied
- 14:02way, and she put her head on my shoulder on the
- 14:05sofa, and we sat in the lamplight, and she said,
- 14:08I gave her the first thing, the real first thing.
- 14:12Everything else is just details now. You gave
- 14:17it to me too, I said. The same thing. Years ago.
- 14:22I only just understood that's what it was. You
- 14:25sat me down in front of the dull cloth of my
- 14:28own ordinary life and made me stop trying to
- 14:31do something impressive with it and just listen
- 14:33to it. Until I could hear it. Until I stopped
- 14:37thinking it was dull and realized I'd just been
- 14:41deaf. I felt her smile against my shoulder. I'm
- 14:45the ninth day version. It just took me about
- 14:48two years instead of nine days. You were a slower
- 14:53student than Tara, she said, with great affection.
- 14:57But you got there. And you stayed, which is the
- 15:00whole thing, through all the dull days when you
- 15:03didn't understand why. You stayed with the cloth.
- 15:07Her hand found mine. That's the only lesson there
- 15:11is, really, in the end. The staying with the
- 15:14true slow thing until it turns out not to be
- 15:17dull. You learned it. Now I get to teach it to
- 15:20her. And someday she'll teach it to someone and
- 15:23I'll be gone. And the lesson will still be going
- 15:26hand to hand down a line of people I'll never
- 15:30meet. All of them learning to stay with the dull
- 15:33cloth until it starts at last to speak. I wrote
- 15:40the last of it in the fifth notebook, the ninth
- 15:43day behind us, the lineage transmitting. The
- 15:47first lesson. Saloni taught Tara nothing for
- 15:51nine days on purpose, handed her the dullest
- 15:54plain undyed base and said, don't cut, don't
- 15:57make, just learn this cloth, find what it wants
- 16:01before you ask it for anything. Tell me what
- 16:04it does on the bias without cutting it. That's
- 16:07the first lesson. Tara. Hungry. Came to ascend,
- 16:11resisted. Thinks I'm wasting slash hazing her.
- 16:15Keeping the good stuff back. Every instinct screaming
- 16:18she's being held back. Saloni. Can't explain
- 16:22it. If I say, I'm teaching you to listen, she'll
- 16:26nod and not get it. You can't understand the
- 16:29lesson by being told. Only by sitting with the
- 16:32dull cloth till something happens. The boredom
- 16:35and frustration aren't obstacles to the teaching.
- 16:39They are the teaching. The cruelty is the other
- 16:42way. The cruel teachers feed the hunger. Techniques,
- 16:46shortcuts, tricks, and send her out fast and
- 16:49skilled and deaf. A brilliant maker of dead things.
- 16:54Day six Terra confronts her. I didn't come here
- 16:57to fold cloth. If you don't want to teach me,
- 16:59I'll go somewhere that will. Magnificent, furious,
- 17:03and proud, and completely wrong, and exactly
- 17:06worth teaching. Saloni tells her the truth she
- 17:10can't use yet. You think the cloth is the dull
- 17:13part and the making the real part backwards.
- 17:16Making is easy, teachable in a year. Listening
- 17:20is the hard part almost no one learns. And you
- 17:23can't learn to listen to a brilliant cloth doing
- 17:26half the work slash seducing you. Only to a dull
- 17:30one with nothing to offer but what you can hear
- 17:32in it. Stay with the dull cloth. It's trying
- 17:35to teach you the only thing I have to give. Or
- 17:39go. But know what you're running from is the
- 17:42lesson, not the absence of one. She stayed furious.
- 17:48The staying with the dull, true, slow thing when
- 17:51the world offers the bright, fast, empty one,
- 17:54i .s. the whole capacity the craft is built on.
- 17:57She just showed she has it. Day nine, Saloni
- 18:01out for chai. You can't be watching, it's a person
- 18:04meeting their own hands, Tara still, playing
- 18:07cloth to the window light, the still look, not
- 18:09excited. It moves differently than I thought,
- 18:12on the bias. I can feel it now, it's been telling
- 18:15me the whole time, and I wasn't listening. I
- 18:18thought it was a dull cloth, it isn't dull. I
- 18:21was just deaf. The lesson? She got it in her
- 18:25own hands with nobody telling her. I didn't put
- 18:28it in, you can't. I took away everything else
- 18:31till she had no choice but to find it in herself.
- 18:34That's all real teaching is, not putting things
- 18:38into people, taking away everything keeping them
- 18:41from hearing what's already in them. Narrator's
- 18:44recognition, the mirror, from inside that's exactly
- 18:47what she did to him across the remade marriage.
- 18:51Never put anything into me. Just patiently took
- 18:54away everything keeping me from hearing what
- 18:57was already there. The noise. The defendedness.
- 19:00The sleepwalking. I thought she was changing
- 19:03me. She was uncovering me. Love done while isn't
- 19:07adding qualities, but subtracting everything
- 19:10between a person and the truest version they
- 19:13already contain. You don't improve the people
- 19:16you love. You excavate them. KP safe tender beat.
- 19:21I gave her the first thing. Everything else is
- 19:24details now, slash he. You gave it to me too.
- 19:28Sat me in front of the dull cloth of my ordinary
- 19:31life and made me listen till I stopped thinking
- 19:34it dull and realized I'd just been deaf. I'm
- 19:37the ninth day version. Took me two years, not
- 19:40nine days, forward slash. You were slower than
- 19:43Tara, but you got there. And you stayed through
- 19:46the dull days you didn't understand. The staying
- 19:49with the true slow thing till it turns out not
- 19:51to be dull is the only lesson. There is. Someday
- 19:56she'll teach it to someone and I'll be gone and
- 19:58it'll still be going, hand to hand, down a line
- 20:02of people I'll never meet, all learning to stay
- 20:06with the dull cloth till it starts to speak.
