- 0:01Welcome into this very exciting episode of the scene.
- 0:04This is a tour update from the road with Clayton Ryan, my boy Xander, and our girl,
- 0:10Sammy Jean Cohen.
- 0:12Sammy, welcome to the show for your first time.
- 0:14Thank you.
- 0:15Thanks for having us.
- 0:16I gotta know I gotta know right off the bat.
- 0:18How is it traveling with all these dudes?
- 0:21Oh my god.
- 0:22I I feel great.
- 0:25I I'm a tomboy, and hang on.
- 0:29We're passing a little baby camera around here.
- 0:31I'm a tomboy, so I fit right in, I feel like.
- 0:33So, yeah, it's been really fun, and they're not too stinky yet.
- 0:38So no.
- 0:39Right.
- 0:40Short tours.
- 0:41That's that's the secret.
- 0:43You know?
- 0:43Seven to ten day runs are just enough once you start stretching past that two weeks.
- 0:48Right?
- 0:48Things start to get a little funky.
- 0:51Yeah.
- 0:51A little funky.
- 0:53But that's okay.
- 0:54I've been in
- 0:55Jacksonville before, so I understand that.
- 0:57That's amazing.
- 0:58So where where does where does the day find y'all?
- 1:01Where are you at?
- 1:03We right now are in Provo, Utah.
- 1:07We spent the night here in a little cheap hotel down the road, and, we're hanging out at a
- 1:11little cafe getting a few emails done.
- 1:13We've had the last two days off, so we're kinda just getting back into civilization a little
- 1:18bit.
- 1:18And, we're making our way down to excuse me.
- 1:22My bad.
- 1:22We're making our way down to Laramie, Wyoming at the roughed up duck for this evening's show.
- 1:27That's awesome.
- 1:28And then April 24, you're at the Matthews Opera House in Spearfish, South Dakota.
- 1:32Correct?
- 1:33Yes, sir.
- 1:34Hometown show for Clayton, dude.
- 1:36We're excited to get back out there.
- 1:38Well, and we're excited for that tour anchor too up in Minneapolis.
- 1:41You guys got one April 20 sixth with some good friends too.
- 1:44Why don't you shout that out real quick, and then we will, get into the dirt.
- 1:48Oh, absolutely.
- 1:49Greenway or sorry.
- 1:50Oh my gosh.
- 1:51Check us out in Uptown Minneapolis at
- 1:53the Green Room with our
- 1:55friends Modern Era.
- 1:56Who else is on the list?
- 1:58Oh my gosh, dude.
- 1:58So this is a thing.
- 1:59I gotta call you when
- 2:00I have
- 2:00We got we got Jay Bell and the lazy Susan band.
- 2:03Jay Bell.
- 2:04We have a lazy Susan band.
- 2:06Yes, sir.
- 2:08And then, who else have I interviewed on that show?
- 2:10Oh, yes.
- 2:11Of course.
- 2:11Mister Clayton Ryan will be there as well.
- 2:13Clayton, how you doing, brother?
- 2:15Dude, what's up, bud?
- 2:16We're just we're we're making it.
- 2:18We're figuring it out.
- 2:20Two days off is great in the middle of the tour.
- 2:23And, yeah, my the barista accidentally gave me a latte with espresso in it.
- 2:29I don't drink caffeine, and I'm already, like, stressing.
- 2:33Because I was like, oh, sweet.
- 2:34A golden milk latte.
- 2:36Let's go.
- 2:36Those don't have caffeine in them ever, and then this place does.
- 2:39Just
- 2:40Which is ironic being that we're in Provo, Salt Lake area where caffeine is a sin.
- 2:46I just heard some crazy news that in Texas now, you can get pulled over and get a DUI for being
- 2:52over caffeinated.
- 2:54Really?
- 2:55I
- 2:56haven't verified, but it is Texas.
- 2:59So
- 3:00To be fair, I know plenty of folks that drink an unhealthy amount of energy drinks that
- 3:04should be regulated, and they should be stopped.
- 3:07And I got I know plenty of dudes that chug two or three Celsiuses in the morning, and
- 3:12Oh my god.
- 3:13It's a it stresses me out.
- 3:15Maybe I'm just jealous because I can't do that anymore.
- 3:17I need
- 3:17to, but I Hey.
- 3:18It's so bad for your kidneys.
- 3:20They cannot appreciate all of that caffeine and all the other crap inside of them.
- 3:25Dude, I had a kidney stone earlier on tour this like, last week, and I don't know where it went
- 3:31because I didn't pass it.
- 3:32And I'm there's nothing bothering me anymore, but the pain was so bad once that I I actually
- 3:38passed out on our drive from Bozeman to, where were we going?
- 3:43Head back to Billings.
- 3:44Yeah.
- 3:44And I I passed out in the van.
- 3:47I've had it happen before, but not like it was weird.
- 3:49And it just disappeared.
- 3:50So I don't know if I just passed it in my sleep or if it's crawling its way up into my mouth.
- 3:55I don't know how kidney stones work, but I don't even drink energy drinks, so I'm mad that
- 4:00I got this thing.
- 4:02This is life on the road with Clayton Ryan.
- 4:05Kidney stones and rock and roll, baby.
- 4:08Oh, no.
- 4:08This Wild man.
- 4:09Welcome to the TMI tour.
- 4:12Well, I've been following along on the YouTube with the wild man series is absolutely
- 4:19incredible.
- 4:20Big kudos to you guys capturing all of that stuff, sharing it.
- 4:24Ryan Little Eagle, mutual friend, was on the episode yesterday.
- 4:28Just love it.
- 4:29You know, it's it's something that the world is craving.
- 4:33Right?
- 4:33All this content, and it's funny what people will end up watching.
- 4:37Right?
- 4:38You know?
- 4:39Oh my gosh.
- 4:39That's what I think whenever people watch five to seven minutes of me rambling mumbling
- 4:45through my words and eating a sardine, that's what I think too.
- 4:48People will watch anything.
- 4:49The dean of the day is my favorite part.
- 4:52Well, I want you to know, Bubba, season three, we're working on condensing that down to about
- 4:57ninety seconds flat.
- 4:58That way we can get some more exciting things than me saying, the fish is fishy.
- 5:05So you guys are about I'd what?
- 5:07So you're probably about two thirds of the way through the tour now, but what was the first
- 5:12part like?
- 5:12What is the first leg?
- 5:13You had some shows out there in Montana.
- 5:15You got into Seattle.
- 5:17Give us a little recap.
- 5:19Bro, it was exciting.
- 5:20We, our first show up in well, first show was in Saint Paul and crowded little joint on a
- 5:27Monday.
- 5:28People were having a good time.
- 5:29They were listening.
- 5:30It was kind of a really good listening room crowd.
- 5:33Tuesday, we end up in Bismarck, ended up as if we didn't plan it months into this.
- 5:37We meandered our way to Bismarck, had an awesome crowd.
- 5:41Some of the folks from the Mooncats were out there watching us play, and they a good crowd,
- 5:47good barbecue.
- 5:49Freaking Billings was an unexpected super fun time.
- 5:52We, ended up having an open mic before the show, and we got to pretty much have all of
- 5:57Billings open up for us, which was awesome.
- 5:59Made some friends.
- 5:59The owner was super cool, dramatic ass snow that night, which definitely was a huge change
- 6:06in weather between our day before.
- 6:09And then next morning, we went and played the first ever peanut butter and jam in the van at
- 6:16the the nutmobile from Planters was in town, and I contacted them on Instagram.
- 6:21And I got to talk to a guy by the name of Honey Roasted Ryan.
- 6:24Shout out to the crew.
- 6:26Hey.
- 6:26Hey.
- 6:27Katie and Jesse.
- 6:27They were great, man.
- 6:28It was fun.
- 6:29They let us play in their gigantic nutmobile, and then we went and had lunch with them.
- 6:35Tasha.
- 6:35Nuts Tasha.
- 6:36Dude, it's funny because you don't realize how much similarities there are between a touring
- 6:42musician and a touring representative of planters until you realize that we're all just
- 6:48going place to place, booking our own stuff, promoting it.
- 6:50The only difference is rather than singing, they procure nuts and peanut paraphernalia.
- 6:56Well, now you're, like, one degree of separation away from the wiener mobile, so we
- 7:01gotta make that happen too.
- 7:03If there's a sardine mobile out there, we will find it.
- 7:07There's gotta be one.
- 7:09There's gotta be, and we are going to make it happen.
- 7:13So Yeah.
- 7:14Very very event season three is gonna be very, very eventful.
- 7:18It's there's there's dramatic weather.
- 7:20There's really hilarious meetups with
- 7:23the
- 7:23nutmobile.
- 7:25The shows are all very different and very unique.
- 7:28And that's what's fun about touring.
- 7:30Right?
- 7:30I mean, that's why we go out on the road is we can get caught up, especially I I know you're
- 7:35playing a hometown show in the Black Hills, but Minnesota has become home to you now over the
- 7:41course of the last, what, fifteen, sixteen months.
- 7:44Right?
- 7:45This this building, this base in Minneapolis, Saint Paul, and throughout the rest of of
- 7:50Minnesota, and it it has to feel a little bit like home there now, does it not?
- 7:57Oh, 100%.
- 7:59It's, fast approaching the most home I've had.
- 8:02I mean, the people in the Black Hills are always gonna be the family, and, like, that's
- 8:05always the place I'm gonna go to that feels like hometown.
- 8:08But Minnesota's definitely definitely making its case for why I'm gonna stay there.
- 8:15Although, I gotta say, man, I'm pretty pissed that I discovered Seattle at 29 because I wish
- 8:21I'd known about that city when I was, like, 20.
- 8:24I would have moved out there, man.
- 8:25That place is so freaking cool.
- 8:27Yeah.
- 8:28I've
- 8:28gone and built up this awesome community in Minnesota that I don't wanna leave, but crap is
- 8:32Seattle so freaking cool.
- 8:34So while we're talking about it, Sammy, why don't you describe the Seattle scene for us a
- 8:39little bit and kinda take us through the show?
- 8:42Oh,
- 8:43okay.
- 8:44The Seattle scene.
- 8:45Well, I've always wanted to go out to Seattle, so that was really fun.
- 8:50And to be with these young fine sellers on the road, it's been a lot of fun, and I kinda wish
- 8:56I had made a move out earlier to Seattle because coulda definitely spent some time in
- 9:01that lovely gloomy weather.
- 9:04And the road?
- 9:06Do you wanna know about the road, you said?
- 9:07Yeah.
- 9:09Honestly, it like, I feel like I belong on the road.
- 9:13And so it's just such a delight that they invited me to to come on this wild man tour,
- 9:20and I also just released a song called wild horse that I wrote about, I don't know, maybe
- 9:25six years ago.
- 9:28What has to do with kind of my traveling to Montana into Arizona and living with wild
- 9:34horses.
- 9:35And so just kind of visiting my second home in Montana was just, like, very meaningful to me.
- 9:42And then to make new memories with these guys, it's been a lot of fun.
- 9:46I I'm a sucker for cute downtowns and good friends and good music and good jokes, and it's
- 9:57just been a lot of fun.
- 9:58And like I said, I love the mountains, and I belong on the road.
- 10:02I'm writing a song about that right now, actually.
- 10:04So
- 10:04How poignant.
- 10:05Yeah.
- 10:08I don't have any complaints over here.
- 10:10Just That's fantastic.
- 10:12I didn't realize that you had some roots out there in the Mountain West.
- 10:16So I actually grew up in Deadwood, which you'll be visiting, very soon or at least getting very
- 10:21close to.
- 10:22And after we had moved from the Chicago area, all the trips consequently were headed west
- 10:27from there.
- 10:28Yellowstone, Bozeman, up to Glacier, out to Seattle, and, I actually lived out in Bend,
- 10:34Oregon for around three years.
- 10:37So out there on the East Side Of The Cascades, really beautiful area.
- 10:41I think you would love it out there, and Bend is a great music town as well.
- 10:45If I woulda had a little bit more heads up on the tour you were planning instead of getting
- 10:49the calendar, you know, a few weeks ago, maybe I coulda hooked it up.
- 10:54But next time, plenty of tours in our future.
- 10:56Yeah.
- 10:58And who knows?
- 10:59Maybe I'll cruise along the West Coast again with these awesome dudes.
- 11:04So, yeah, it's it's beautiful drive and getting to touch the ocean up there was just awesome.
- 11:10So yeah.
- 11:11It rejuvenates the soul, doesn't it?
- 11:13To get out and to get away from home?
- 11:16You're in Minneapolis now, correct, or in the Minnesota area?
- 11:20Yeah.
- 11:20I moved back home during the pandemic.
- 11:24So, yeah, it's, yeah, back in mid good old Minneapolis.
- 11:28Yeah.
- 11:29Well, and that's where we're headed.
- 11:31So you got just a few shows left before you get back into Minneapolis.
- 11:34We talked about the show at the Green Room.
- 11:37Xander, why don't you, kinda take us through what this tour has meant for you and, you know,
- 11:43what it will mean kind of returning home a little bit to conquering heroes this time?
- 11:49Oh, dude.
- 11:49I gotta tell you.
- 11:50It's been awesome to have, like, a both kickoff tour and a return home.
- 11:54What am I saying?
- 11:55A kick a show at home to kick off the tour and to return.
- 11:58It's it's pretty sweet, man.
- 11:59The hometown vibes are always great.
- 12:01I gotta tell you, this is the most organized we've ever been on tour, which has been pretty
- 12:05incredible regarding the van, at least.
- 12:07We've got all of our musical gear in the van, and then Casey Carlson, our videographer, was
- 12:12able to secure a nice little, trailer, from his uncle Mike.
- 12:17So shout out to uncle Mike.
- 12:18Oh my He hooked us up, dude.
- 12:20So we're able to throw all of our camping gear and bedding in there.
- 12:22So we've been super clean and have plenty of room in the van, which has been awesome.
- 12:27Dude, it always just means so much to me whenever I can hit the road with my homies,
- 12:31especially going out west.
- 12:32There's just something magical about the wild West.
- 12:34It just rejuvenates my soul seeing the mountains and being so close and being able to
- 12:38touch all these mountains and even seeing snow.
- 12:40It's warming up out here, but seeing snow up on the mountains and everything, it's just so
- 12:44cool.
- 12:45Oh, man.
- 12:45Sorry.
- 12:46I got a gnarly Uh-oh.
- 12:49They found you.
- 12:50Hold on one second.
- 12:53Hey.
- 12:53I I like the live feel, man.
- 12:55It doesn't bother me.
- 12:57We have a siren that goes off about four times a day here in Tyndall.
- 13:01I have to plan my podcast episodes around it because I live right next door to it.
- 13:05Oh my gosh.
- 13:06Sorry about that.
- 13:07That was crazy.
- 13:08That's what
- 13:08happens in in Provost.
- 13:10You think about drinking coffee.
- 13:14Exactly.
- 13:16Well, you shout it out.
- 13:17Is Casey around the table with you guys too?
- 13:19My squad.
- 13:20No.
- 13:20He's he's actually protecting all of our gear inside of this cafe we're, cooped up at at the
- 13:24moment.
- 13:26Well, tell him.
- 13:26Lovings.
- 13:27It's a lovings.
- 13:28Yeah.
- 13:28Well and you tell him that that we absolutely love the footage that he's been capturing and
- 13:33just a a big shout out to the man behind the lens.
- 13:36You know, we were we were just awarded a content creator of the year award through the
- 13:40Midwest Country Music Organization, but I don't necessarily capture the content.
- 13:45Right?
- 13:45I'm an in front of the camera, you know, guy.
- 13:49I am a planner.
- 13:50I am a producer, but I don't do the actual work that people are seeing.
- 13:55Right?
- 13:56You know, in front of my camera on Zoom, I guess, yes, but, the the stuff that we got
- 14:01coming out this year requires partnerships with incredible artists that know how to work that
- 14:07lens.
- 14:07And, Casey's one of the best that I've ever seen, man.
- 14:10So big shout out to Casey.
- 14:12You can tell him that, he's got a job at the scene projects whenever you guys get rid of
- 14:16him.
- 14:17You got it, man.
- 14:18Heck yeah.
- 14:19Yeah.
- 14:19He's great, man.
- 14:19We love him.
- 14:20Not only is he a road dog and just so great on the road and easy to get along with, he just
- 14:25he's he's so freaking talented, man.
- 14:27I don't know what we would do without him.
- 14:29Well, you wouldn't have a hit YouTube show.
- 14:31That's for sure.
- 14:33That's for sure, man.
- 14:34We we have a hit YouTube show?
- 14:36Hey.
- 14:36It's a hit in my world, and that's about all I care about these days.
- 14:40As the as the world continues to spin out of control, I find solace in just digging in even
- 14:48harder to my little world, which isn't so little.
- 14:51Right?
- 14:51You're talking about several hundred artists that are out there, all existing in their own
- 14:55worlds.
- 14:55Right?
- 14:56No different from you all, but I get to kinda tap into that occasionally, have some
- 15:00conversations.
- 15:01We record them.
- 15:02We call it a podcast, but it's really just archiving our lives for the record.
- 15:06Oh,
- 15:07yeah.
- 15:08That's the that's the cool part, man.
- 15:10We get to run into so many friends on the road, especially this tour so far.
- 15:13Like, running into the moon cats was super cool.
- 15:15When we were playing in Bozeman, actually, we had a couple repeat customers, which was super
- 15:19cool.
- 15:19This this gentleman that was playing violin out on the streets just busking last time Clayton
- 15:24and I were here.
- 15:24We threw him a couple bucks and invited him on to the show, and he came on to this last one
- 15:29and remembered our names and everything.
- 15:31It was so sweet.
- 15:32He's like, you guys keep doing the dream keep following your dreams.
- 15:34Keep doing the thing, and I can't wait to see you.
- 15:36He's like, hopefully, next time I see you here, you guys will be playing the bigger side of the
- 15:40armory here.
- 15:42So
- 15:42Well, and, Xander, being
- 15:44people are.
- 15:44From the cities like you are, I think it's hard for you to comprehend how slow and boring life
- 15:50can be out in the Mountain West.
- 15:52You know, just just because in the cities where you could meet someone and then a month later
- 15:57see them again and they maybe not remember your name, where out in the Mountain West, those
- 16:02people will remember you for years.
- 16:04Right?
- 16:05You could come back three years later, and there will still be the same people in the same
- 16:09place doing the same thing talking about that time they met Xander and Clayton and Sammy out
- 16:14on the road.
- 16:15And that's the beauty of getting out and touring is going out to reach those people and
- 16:19especially the way that y'all have been doing it, really dipping into smaller markets.
- 16:24Right?
- 16:24I mean, Billings, Montana, not a huge tour stop for a lot of people.
- 16:29You know, going through Provo, Utah.
- 16:31I I know I don't know if you guys played a show out in that area or not, but once again, a
- 16:35small one.
- 16:36The Black Hills are very, very small too.
- 16:38So it it's a blessing to have such talented people that will dedicate their lives to their
- 16:44craft and then take that out and to visit us in these small towns.
- 16:49Right?
- 16:49Like, that is a blessing, not just for you, but also for all of these people that are coming
- 16:53out to the shows too.
- 16:54And I think that's something that we all have to remember, as we're out there.
- 17:00Most definitely.
- 17:01Yeah.
- 17:01I don't know, man.
- 17:02It's just it's always nice to make new connections no matter where we go.
- 17:05And whether or not they remember us, we hope we can we can leave a little piece of ourselves
- 17:09with everybody that we play for and, hope they reciprocate it.
- 17:13And so far, so good, man.
- 17:14I'm sorry.
- 17:14This has been a wonderful tour.
- 17:16Awesome.
- 17:16Zander, how are the arms feeling?
- 17:18I know you've been working out this trip.
- 17:20Dude, they're feeling good, man.
- 17:22I made a goal of a hundred push ups and a hundred crunches a day so far.
- 17:25Thanks, Sammy.
- 17:27So far, think I've done a 50 crunches this whole tour so far, but I made it about 75,
- 17:34almost a hundred push ups every day, and I'm feeling good, dude.
- 17:37I've never felt this good ever.
- 17:40It's pretty nice.
- 17:40I don't know if it's just like the fresh air from the mountains too, but, yeah, man.
- 17:44It's the fact that you and it's the fact that you and Clayton aren't putting down a bottle of
- 17:49Tennessee whiskey, in the hotel room after the show as you were on the, on the YouTube last
- 17:55night.
- 17:55Oh, shoot.
- 17:56No.
- 17:56No.
- 17:57Not this tour, dude.
- 17:58Oh my gosh.
- 17:58That's my favorite episode.
- 18:00Episode three of season two is my favorite, dude.
- 18:03Oh my god.
- 18:04Casey's little callback to the night before with Clayton doing a screamo.
- 18:07Was thinking it was just
- 18:08That was
- 18:09me up.
- 18:09I lost it.
- 18:10Right?
- 18:10Man, I don't know what's bothering my throat.
- 18:13A quick cut to him screaming on the microphone.
- 18:16Just epic.
- 18:17You guys are doing it, and I'm glad that we got to jump on the phone today.
- 18:21I I know you're busy, I don't wanna keep you forever.
- 18:23Why don't you go ahead and shout out the last few tours, and then we'll hit with some parting
- 18:27shots.
- 18:28Alright.
- 18:29Today, Laramie, Wyoming, the roughed up duck.
- 18:32Tomorrow, Fort Collins, we're going to the neighbor.
- 18:35So the day after that, Thursday, Spearfish, we're going to the Matthews Opera House where
- 18:38we're working with the Black Hills Writers Collective collaboration.
- 18:42It's gonna be sick as hell.
- 18:43And then Friday, Woodgreen Brewing in Sioux Falls downtown.
- 18:48Come on out East River.
- 18:50And then homecoming show Minneapolis, the green room in uptown, and that's what we got.
- 18:55And then I think a week after that, Xander and I head down to Oklahoma City for the Rose Rock
- 19:03Music Festival and the play.
- 19:04We're opening for Parker Millsap at the deli in Norman and with Tyler Bird and the flock, and
- 19:10that's gonna be a super cool little quick down and back, make a few bucks, hang out in
- 19:17Oklahoma.
- 19:18Can't stop.
- 19:19Won't stop, baby.
- 19:20No.
- 19:20I can't.
- 19:21No.
- 19:21You've inspired me, man.
- 19:23I'm taking the scene projects on the road this year, a little bit different than going out
- 19:28with a band.
- 19:29Right?
- 19:29I just said, well, I'm gonna go out with my microphones.
- 19:32We'll plan some more songwriter showcases in different markets around and taking my friend
- 19:36Bertie Young along with me now too as her tour kind of fell apart around the same time.
- 19:41And, you know, sometimes that's just God making way for the right things.
- 19:44Right?
- 19:45You have to be willing to roll with the punches, especially out on the road and to keep
- 19:49going with a smile on your face.
- 19:51So you guys are gonna be in my neck of the woods this Friday.
- 19:54We've already made plans to kind of be around Sioux Falls that day, so we're gonna have to
- 19:58pop in and see you.
- 19:59A lot of shows this week.
- 20:00Obviously, the twenty fourth, Matthew's Opera House, all of our Black Hills fans get out
- 20:05there, check out that show in Spearfish, South Dakota.
- 20:07Woodgrain Brewery is downtown Sioux Falls.
- 20:09That's April 25.
- 20:11And then the Green Room uptown Minneapolis on April 26.
- 20:14You guys catch them all on tour.
- 20:16Any parting shots before I let you guys get out of here?
- 20:20Thanks for what you're doing, Bubba.
- 20:21We appreciate you so much.
- 20:23Thanks for taking the time, to talk with us today and to deal with all the loud noises
- 20:27around us in Provo.
- 20:30Epic, man.
- 20:30Well, Sammy, Xander, and Clayton Ryan, thank you guys so much for being a part of the scene
- 20:35and doing exactly what you're doing.
