- 0:05[SPEAKER_02]: All right, welcome to the show.
- 0:06[SPEAKER_02]: Others receiving votes.
- 0:07[SPEAKER_02]: Aside.com Sports Illustrated.
- 0:09[SPEAKER_02]: I'm Pat Forty Join always by Brian Fisher and Kevin Swenie.
- 0:15[SPEAKER_02]: This is the Sunday over reaction show except it's Monday because God's football gave us so much we had to hold off a day to get the Sunday games into the discussion here.
- 0:27[SPEAKER_02]: Gentlemen, this show is we usually try to hit 60 minutes.
- 0:32[SPEAKER_02]: In honor of Western Michigan and Michigan, we might go 60, oh, oh, oh, one why not looks like everybody gets an extra second now and then now and again, if you need it, we might.
- 0:45[SPEAKER_02]: We're certainly going to start by talking about that debacle Travis Chemocca Rethiasco in the big house.
- 0:54[SPEAKER_02]: I was watching it live, I don't know about you guys, but I'm interested to hear your reactions as a viewer getting the information that we got in real time, Kevin, why don't you start what was your reaction as this thing unfolded?
- 1:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, the thing that was difficult, like I think about times where a second has been added in the past, right?
- 1:18[SPEAKER_01]: Like I think about like the the a yellowing stepping out of bounds before the kick six, right?
- 1:23[SPEAKER_01]: And you could very clearly freeze frame and say, yep, one second.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_01]: guy standing out of bounds, right?
- 1:29[SPEAKER_01]: This was much more difficult in the sense that first of all, the entirety of it was framed upon the idea that the guy had stepped out of bounds and then touched the ball to kill the play, which if not, this game's over regardless, right?
- 1:44[SPEAKER_01]: Because even even if there's one second, which I don't think there was, but if there was one second on that clock, it wouldn't matter because of ball, it would still be in play, right?
- 1:51[SPEAKER_01]: So,
- 1:52[SPEAKER_01]: That was the hard thing.
- 1:54[SPEAKER_01]: I had a hard time looking like how, like, how do you find the second?
- 1:57[SPEAKER_01]: How do you find the second?
- 1:58[SPEAKER_01]: And then again, they did.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_01]: And I mean, I think immediately from there, everyone was like, oh, this is going to happen.
- 2:06[SPEAKER_01]: Like the something weird is going to happen.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, it did.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_01]: It's it's it's it's back breaking.
- 2:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, look, I think the the questions about.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_01]: like what you communicate to the viewer and like this, hey, well, sometimes the clock is in quite right, sometimes what we've got isn't what you've got, like, but it's supposed to be, but sometimes it isn't, like, that those are not answers that like,
- 2:31[SPEAKER_01]: people can live with, right?
- 2:32[SPEAKER_01]: Like it fuels the conspiracy theories, it fuels, right?
- 2:35[SPEAKER_01]: Like I'd like to take everyone at their word that this is how I went down.
- 2:40[SPEAKER_01]: I'd like to, but when you experience it the way that we did in real time, I don't know how anyone's expected not to feel a certain type of way about it.
- 2:50[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that's what's most frustrating.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it was funny.
- 2:54[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm at Tiger Stadium for LSU Clemson and there's kind of a break in the action.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_00]: So you're obviously like, you know, focused on other games, you know, and it had been a blow out well before that.
- 3:03[SPEAKER_00]: So you know, everybody was kind of doing other things and, you know, pecking away and I'm watching.
- 3:09[SPEAKER_00]: you know, the ending and and I say, oh, okay, I think I won second left and and then, you know, that the play happens and actually completed it and I just I'm the first one to react on press row everybody's like, well, you know, what would it would just happen to something happen another game I say watch Michigan Western Michigan and then everybody else reacts, you know, a few seconds later and there's just disbelief.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_00]: And like the thing that I still don't get, and we've reached the other big tin, put out their explanation, the Mac, put out their explanation, like how is there two clocks?
- 3:43[SPEAKER_00]: This is a new thing.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_00]: Like every Saturday, it seems like you see something new, and the fact that there is two clocks now.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_00]: And we didn't understand before at any other situation in any other college football game of the thousands that have been played apparently there are two clocks, you know, the one that you're supposed to use for for the broadcast and you know, my prayer or some others have come out there was an article in the athletic where they spoke to Bruce Feldman about this like, you know, you're supposed to use what everybody sees what what the people stayed in the stadium.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_00]: which is what the players are obviously seeing on the field.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_00]: There's what you're seeing at home in terms of the TV feed.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_00]: That's, you know, hyped directly from, you know, from various sources.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_00]: But the fact that we understand that there's some other clock.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_00]: So magical secondary clock.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_00]: you know, it just was mind-bending at times to see.
- 4:30[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, I do give a lot of credit to Landstaleer at Western Michigan and the entire Broncos staff, their administration right now, they are with that on an athletic director.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_00]: They do have an intern right now, but like the way they've handled this, which I mean, you talk about one of, no, it's probably the greatest win in school history,
- 4:51[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it just, and then to come out and say, you know what, we'll accept that and we'll move on.
- 4:58[SPEAKER_00]: Like I give them a lot of credit because I think there's probably a hundred other fan bases in college football right now, who would not be reacting anywhere near.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_00]: You know, this, this, this amount of level, little head, head in this coming out of Kalamazoo there.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_00]: It is just wild to think that, you know, just to wrap your head around the entire situation.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_00]: Plus the impact that it's going to have on on Michigan season, not only going into,
- 5:19[SPEAKER_00]: the local home and game that's coming week, but like there's there's going this is going to be hanging over Kyle Woodingham's entire season at this point.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_00]: You know, we're always going to be referencing this game this second in this moment and for both the Wolverines and the Broncos.
- 5:33[SPEAKER_02]: Should Michigan go on to have a memorable impactful playoff competitive season
- 5:40[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, this will linger heavily.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_02]: This will be like Colorado's fifth down in terms of something that happened that never felt right and people wonder whether Michigan should be getting what it's getting if it gets there.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_02]: Now the way they played, they could also go four and eight.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_02]: I expect them to get better, but that was a dreadful performance in general and a valiant performance by Western Michigan.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_02]: Western Michigan is taking the incredible high road.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_02]: I think the Mac is taking too much of a high road.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_02]: I think the Mac basically is rolled over and said, yeah, whatever you guys say is fine.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_02]: And whether that is because the Mac is in a position where
- 6:22[SPEAKER_02]: They depend on games against the Big Ten and they don't want to burn that multimillion dollar bridge in terms of buyouts or guarantee pace, whether it's because the Mac and the Big Ten share the same supervisor of officials Bill Carolo and Bill got on the phone said, look, yeah, this is fine.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_02]: This is this is straight up.
- 6:42[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know, but
- 6:45[SPEAKER_02]: I think the term known discrepancy is going to linger for a while.
- 6:50[SPEAKER_02]: That's part of the explanation for this of the two-clock situation.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_02]: And yes, to you all's point, anything that is this obscure, confusing, esoteric and unavailable to the public invites exactly what it has spawned.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_02]: If there is going to be a situation where the clocks are not synced, and maybe they didn't know they weren't synced until after the game.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_02]: But beforehand, you need to say, I think every broadcast from now on, she either have a chiron graphic or an explanation from the play by play guy at the beginning or something saying, the clock we are showing you may or may not be the right clock.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_02]: And then college sports should get really serious about making sure
- 7:44[SPEAKER_02]: We don't have a known discrepancy, and we have clocks that are at the actual clock, because the credibility of what we're watching is its stake.
- 7:54[SPEAKER_02]: And you can't have people saying, well, you know what's really happening is they're sitting in a control room in Chicago with an extremely vested interest in Michigan winning this game, and they decided there's a second left.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_02]: The bigger the even more macro issue than this for me,
- 8:14[SPEAKER_02]: Why do we have this, you know, this belief, this suspicion that the fix is in?
- 8:20[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that's because of the way college sports has aligned itself, conducted itself, arranged its power structure so that the power teams always have the advantage.
- 8:34[SPEAKER_02]: Everything always, they get what they want and nobody is more front and center of that than the big ten.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, Tony Petiti and Greg Sanky the SEC are in charge of the playoff.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_02]: Why is that?
- 8:51[SPEAKER_02]: Why did everybody say you guys are in charge?
- 8:54[SPEAKER_02]: Does that seem fair?
- 8:55[SPEAKER_02]: Or does it seem like they've got the deck of cards shuffle the way they want?
- 8:59[SPEAKER_02]: The playoff payouts.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_02]: are weighted in favor of the big 10 in the SEC.
- 9:06[SPEAKER_02]: Who goes along with that?
- 9:08[SPEAKER_02]: Why is that the situation?
- 9:11[SPEAKER_02]: Tony Petiti, when they first talked about expanding the playoff, said we need four automatic bids for our league.
- 9:20[SPEAKER_02]: Why is that?
- 9:22[SPEAKER_02]: That's not fair.
- 9:23[SPEAKER_02]: That's not earning it on the field.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_02]: So you roll all these things together.
- 9:28[SPEAKER_02]: They've already got the most money.
- 9:30[SPEAKER_02]: And now, geez, when the replay officials decide there's a second left that nobody in America can see or figure out, guess what happens.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_02]: Everybody thinks the fix is in.
- 9:43[SPEAKER_02]: And maybe it wasn't.
- 9:44[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe the explanations are all correct.
- 9:47[SPEAKER_02]: And this is just simply a known discrepancy that wasn't known to the majority of America at the time that it happened.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_02]: So I am just disturbed by the way all of this could happen and the backdrop of why people think wonder when these things happen, they go to the conspiracy.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_00]: Well, you know, I look at the entire episode and I mean, I've been arguing, I think I wrote a column more than a decade ago, just like, why do we have big ten officials?
- 10:22[SPEAKER_00]: Why do we have SEC officials?
- 10:24[SPEAKER_00]: Like this, this should be nationalized, you know, like there should be no distinction because number one, I don't understand why the conferences are not in favor of doing so because they understand.
- 10:33[SPEAKER_00]: They're inviting this on themselves.
- 10:35[SPEAKER_00]: How many conspiracy theories do you hear?
- 10:37[SPEAKER_00]: Every single Saturday about SEC fans, they can the conference office has the fixant is in for their game.
- 10:43[SPEAKER_00]: or their team, like get rid of that, like get rid of that notion.
- 10:47[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, it, you know, close to the AC and the big trouble they have opened up those replay booths and you're going to be able to hear them, like, but that's a step forward, sure, but there should be no, no reason we don't have the entire transparency in terms of the entire replay process, where you can go back, you can hear exactly what they say, you know, a poor report at this point is just not going to suffice for a lot of situations that's particularly this one.
- 11:10[SPEAKER_00]: And like, you need to rip the bandaid off.
- 11:12[SPEAKER_00]: You need to go national.
- 11:13[SPEAKER_00]: And you need to make sure that transparency is at a max what?
- 11:16[SPEAKER_00]: Because this is the one area where let's face it.
- 11:19[SPEAKER_00]: Bands already are antagonistic in terms of what you're thinking in terms of this entire process.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_00]: And so I just, I think there should be a larger officiating discussion.
- 11:28[SPEAKER_00]: Hopefully this is those,
- 11:30[SPEAKER_00]: You know, the type of big picture thing that everybody can understand that kind of leads to that.
- 11:34[SPEAKER_00]: I doubt we even get there.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_00]: But you know, and I just it boggles the mind sometimes how the sport operates and it's like, no, well, we're just going to keep doing the things that we've always done.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_00]: And you know what you're going to keep dealing with a lot of these issues.
- 11:49[SPEAKER_00]: I think that the more esoteric question for Michigan is like, man, they got pushed around by what, no, Mr. Michigan.
- 11:55[SPEAKER_00]: And I get that that's a mac team that has been together for a long time, you know, they were really excited about this season in particular that coaching staff, but, you know, to see them push around like they were, I think that would be the biggest concern if you're Kyle Woodingham moving forward, you know, especially going into Oklahoma Week.
- 12:11[SPEAKER_00]: I know they did pray didn't want to show a whole lot, you know, in terms of offensive and in defensive because it is new staff, you know, a number of new pieces on the roster, but that would be the most concerning thing.
- 12:22[SPEAKER_00]: You're kind of looking long-term in Michigan, and man, the amount of crazy finishes that the stadium, I mean, obviously it's, you know, a major team, but like you got, you know, Desmond Howard, and he had the drop, he had certainly quartile Stewart going the other way with Colorado, he had the trouble with a snap, and this is the exact same in zone there, and I know where it seemed like that you got the App latch and stayed upset, which was where approaching two decades from now, so it's just a great, the amount of crazy finishes that Michigan has had.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_00]: Um, but I think there's there's going to be some some long-term ramifications that are unique to this situation that though we probably will continue to be talking about the rest of the year on the transparency front.
- 13:02[SPEAKER_01]: I think one thing that would make.
- 13:05[SPEAKER_01]: Everything marginally better would be to put the tense of the second on the clock.
- 13:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 13:09[SPEAKER_01]: Go that.
- 13:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 13:10[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 13:11[SPEAKER_01]: Like the, like, even small things like that.
- 13:13[SPEAKER_01]: Like, again, there was a video that was going around if someone who, like, hand-timed the player was only in half seconds.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_01]: Well, okay, like, that's good to know.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_01]: Like, thank you.
- 13:22[SPEAKER_01]: But like, that would be nice to see on the broadcast.
- 13:24[SPEAKER_01]: And number two, like, that would be helpful.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, was it actually nine seconds or was it 8.7 or was it 9.4?
- 13:30[SPEAKER_01]: Right?
- 13:31[SPEAKER_01]: Like, we didn't know where coming from from start.
- 13:33[SPEAKER_01]: Like, that's crazy to me.
- 13:35[SPEAKER_01]: That's where we're at.
- 13:36[SPEAKER_01]: Um, so I would like to see that.
- 13:37[SPEAKER_01]: Again, I think there's a larger conversation about all sorts of things with officiating that hopefully this prompts, but yeah, I would certainly think that that would be like a low hanging fruit.
- 13:46[SPEAKER_01]: Get that done.
- 13:47[SPEAKER_01]: Um, yeah, as far as the game itself, right?
- 13:49[SPEAKER_01]: Like, it's, it did not feel like a traditional upset script, right?
- 13:54[SPEAKER_01]: Like, how often have you seen the four touchdown
- 14:01[SPEAKER_01]: just push around the blue blood, right?
- 14:03[SPEAKER_01]: Like it's one thing when it's like all the quarterback had an unbelievable day and flew around or you're crazy turnover lock.
- 14:08[SPEAKER_01]: Like, no, like, what Western Michigan just kind of like lined up, spotted the ball and was better than Michigan.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_01]: Like that.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_01]: That that's extremely impressive for for last Taylor who I think we all think pretty highly of and think he'll be a guy that people want to talk about for future jobs or the given The loyalty that his team has shown I hope that you know that that that that goes both ways and like they they have a chance to have a kind of special season that that they seem to be brewing towards but.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, yeah, unbelievable level of concern for for Michigan, just in terms of the way they play, the way they looked offensively.
- 14:45[SPEAKER_01]: Again, the vanilla stuff goes out the window when you're losing a Western Michigan, right?
- 14:49[SPEAKER_01]: Like, if there was a switch to flip and they didn't flip it for Bryce underwood, that's its own credit criticism of the entire offensive game plan.
- 14:58[SPEAKER_00]: They gave up 20 play drive.
- 14:59[SPEAKER_00]: It's crazy.
- 15:01[SPEAKER_00]: Michigan, Michigan gave up 20 play drive to a
- 15:07[SPEAKER_02]: But very good points from both of you and things I did want to touch on is that the conference by conference officiating, which again creates appearances of favoritism, a national
- 15:29[SPEAKER_02]: That's one of the reasons the NFL, I mean, yes, people say in the NFL, oh, the the league office favors the Patriots or the Cowboys or whatever.
- 15:38[SPEAKER_02]: Nah, I mean, you know what, the NFL favors itself because the NFL is one giant and glomerate of cash.
- 15:47[SPEAKER_02]: Again, college football, it's all the fiefdoms and when one fiefdom is in charge of its own officiating and its own replay and its own rulings
- 15:59[SPEAKER_02]: can national office, you set yourself up for this.
- 16:04[SPEAKER_02]: Kevin, I thought the same thing, like the basketball has tenths on the clock.
- 16:10[SPEAKER_02]: Basketball has a light up backboard.
- 16:12[SPEAKER_02]: If there's anything you could do there, lighting up the goalpost or something, I don't know.
- 16:17[SPEAKER_02]: Now, we're also, okay, this thing, first of all, it is fresh, it's huge, it feels,
- 16:25[SPEAKER_02]: Like something needs to be done, we can also look and say the cost of changing out every clock system and lighting up every goal post or whatever would be awfully big for something that happens, I don't know, once a decade maybe or something, probably more often than that, but still, the,
- 16:47[SPEAKER_02]: Clock systems in basketball are so much easier, first of all, to see, to understand and to get accurate information.
- 16:56[SPEAKER_02]: So again, the opacity, opacity, whatever the pronunciation there, the opakeness of this is part of the problem.
- 17:08[SPEAKER_02]: One other thing, yes, the every concern you guys have articulated
- 17:16[SPEAKER_02]: One other thing that from an officiating standpoint that stood out and I was saw it in real time, this was early fourth, fourth quarter, it's seven to six, Western Michigan is driving there on like the 22, I think the 22 yard line of Michigan, third and 11, they're playing for a field goal to take the lead, fine, make sense, hand the ball off, running back,
- 17:41[SPEAKER_02]: gets hit after a yard gain and they push him sideways.
- 17:45[SPEAKER_02]: And the whole time there's a Michigan guy grabbing his face mask.
- 17:47[SPEAKER_02]: Like there's a 10 step process of this guy getting pushed to the sidelines and out of bounds.
- 17:53[SPEAKER_02]: And the Michigan player has his hand on the face mask for like eight of those steps.
- 17:57[SPEAKER_02]: It is the clearest face mask imaginable and it doesn't get called.
- 18:02[SPEAKER_02]: If it does, it's first intent at the 11 and they run two more minutes off the clock.
- 18:10[SPEAKER_02]: and that we don't even talking about what happened at the end of the game because it's decided by then.
- 18:15[SPEAKER_02]: So these are the other things where, you know, look face masks get missed, holding gets missed, passing a parents gets missed, but these are amplified in these situations.
- 18:25[SPEAKER_02]: And it's again, it's the home team with the big 10 refs that gets a clear penalty in the fourth quarter of a close game that doesn't get called.
- 18:35[SPEAKER_02]: So,
- 18:36[SPEAKER_02]: Again, there are a lot of reasons people are cynical.
- 18:40[SPEAKER_02]: A lot of them also are crazy and the conspiracy theories are insane.
- 18:44[SPEAKER_02]: But in this case, you're feeding into it college football by just being what you are.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_02]: All right, if we're done with
- 18:59[SPEAKER_02]: with the bail Mary.
- 19:01[SPEAKER_02]: Let's move on to the scene in Baton Rouge.
- 19:05[SPEAKER_02]: And I have to say first of all, the pure.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_02]: like sports writer self-interest.
- 19:11[SPEAKER_02]: I felt for Brian and every other hack that was there for a two hour delay before what you knew was already gonna be a long game.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_02]: And he was my thought, my question, Brian, were you staying in Baton Rouge?
- 19:22[SPEAKER_02]: Are you staying in New Orleans?
- 19:23[SPEAKER_00]: I was in in Baton Rouge.
- 19:24[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, good.
- 19:25[SPEAKER_02]: Because I've been there for night games when you get out of there and say, one AM and you got to drive 80 miles with a lot of other,
- 19:36[SPEAKER_02]: lubricated Louisiana's back to New Orleans and it is not fun.
- 19:41[SPEAKER_02]: If you add two more hours of rental on top of that, at least you avoided that.
- 19:45[SPEAKER_02]: Congratulations.
- 19:46[SPEAKER_02]: But tell us about the scene, obviously massive anticipation for the Lane Kiffin debut.
- 19:53[SPEAKER_02]: They came through spectacularly.
- 19:56[SPEAKER_02]: Clemson was god awful, but let's talk about LSU first and just this whole scene down there.
- 20:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, this is, so this is my third straight year.
- 20:04[SPEAKER_00]: I've gone to a night game at Tiger Stadium.
- 20:06[SPEAKER_00]: And it's obviously one of those things that I think if you got a bucket list in terms of places to go for college football, this is this stuff.
- 20:14[SPEAKER_00]: And one of them, it is a great scene.
- 20:17[SPEAKER_00]: I figured, I knew things were up when like a normal 20-ish minute drive from where I typically stay to the stadium, took me like 90 minutes, you know, like that was that bad.
- 20:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you knew things were up in terms of the excitement level here and you know luckily the sky when I was walking around the parking lots and kind of around the stadium and campus area like the sky's had had cleared and you could just see the threatening clouds though, you know kind of coming.
- 20:44[SPEAKER_00]: And it didn't stop the party certainly, though the gumbo was still to boiling and it was what you expect from a night game.
- 20:52[SPEAKER_00]: There in Tiger Stadium, the smells were unique to certainly that region and to that stadium and campus.
- 20:58[SPEAKER_00]: And then I saw the clouds getting a little close.
- 21:01[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, well, maybe I better go up to the press box and I'll just drop my bag, right?
- 21:06[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, probably as soon as I get up the elevator and start walking out to my seat, like, man, it just opened up.
- 21:12[SPEAKER_00]: And the board's flash, the lightning delay and Kevin had just come into the stadium and you know, it was just like a biblical proportion of rain, you know, just instantly and not only was it delayed, which it actually was the latest kickoff they'd ever say ever ever had their tiger stadium for LSU, not only did it delay kickoff.
- 21:34[SPEAKER_00]: But like, the students were still out.
- 21:36[SPEAKER_00]: They were singing songs.
- 21:37[SPEAKER_00]: They were throwing their towels.
- 21:39[SPEAKER_00]: They handed out towels to everybody.
- 21:41[SPEAKER_00]: Like it was just a weird kind of scene that kept getting delayed and link up and even said afterwards.
- 21:46[SPEAKER_00]: Like they said, do you want to shorten the 90 minute warmup clock?
- 21:49[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, no, I want them to stay in the locker room for as long as possible.
- 21:53[SPEAKER_00]: You know, like just just, you know, to the 1st degree, Lane Kiffin wanted to tweak his opponents.
- 21:57[SPEAKER_00]: And then the game started and, you know, that LSU throws an interception on the second player, like, all right, well, you know, in terms of bad omens, this, they're coming on strong at this point for Lane Kiffin's debut.
- 22:10[SPEAKER_00]: And then the real game kind of happened after that and what we all saw would happen.
- 22:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, look, I think the chaos of lane and this all season and all of us, you does make us forget sometimes it like length kiffens offences are usually pretty brilliant and Lane kiffens did a heck of a job at Ole Miss and Sam Levitt's a really talented quarterback and they've got dudes around them.
- 22:36[SPEAKER_01]: Right, like this looked like
- 22:39[SPEAKER_01]: one of the most expensive rosters and not the most expensive rosters in college football for a reason.
- 22:43[SPEAKER_01]: This looked like that paired with one of the best offensive brain trusts in college football, right?
- 22:48[SPEAKER_01]: It was an optimistic debut and every sense of the word from for me for all of you.
- 22:52[SPEAKER_01]: I was very impressed.
- 22:53[SPEAKER_01]: I know that the instinct is to go to Clemson and I'm sure we will and there's lots of, there's lots to say there, but I think everybody should be impressed with where else you sat and then how dangerous I say can be when
- 23:10[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, the levitt wheels are back.
- 23:12[SPEAKER_02]: He had offseasonless Frank's surgery.
- 23:13[SPEAKER_02]: He's fine.
- 23:14[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, ran for over 100 yards.
- 23:17[SPEAKER_02]: They're running game, holy moly.
- 23:20[SPEAKER_02]: They had 309 yards rushing in this game.
- 23:23[SPEAKER_02]: Totally hard.
- 23:25[SPEAKER_02]: It's they had 499 more yards than Clemson.
- 23:28[SPEAKER_02]: Then another power conference school.
- 23:30[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, this was the kind of beat down you see people put on Missouri State or Arkansas pineblaf.
- 23:36[SPEAKER_02]: Except it was Clemson they were playing.
- 23:39[SPEAKER_02]: incredibly powerful performance by LSU, and you're right Kevin that I think just the drama that constantly surrounds Kiffin obscures sometimes the fact that he does know what he's doing.
- 23:55[SPEAKER_02]: And I wonder now, if you put him, if he can avoid being an idiot and a weasel long enough to just
- 24:07[SPEAKER_02]: Man, they're good, they're very, very good.
- 24:10[SPEAKER_02]: I would, if I were a voter, I would put them number one right now with no questions asked after one game.
- 24:17[SPEAKER_02]: The, the thing that, again, this does reinforce to me after watching them.
- 24:27[SPEAKER_02]: Why were they willing to go, kiffin missile crisis is somebody put it to me,
- 24:37[SPEAKER_02]: over a couple of former NFL guys, they don't need them.
- 24:42[SPEAKER_02]: You don't need a second tight end.
- 24:44[SPEAKER_02]: You don't need another defensive back.
- 24:46[SPEAKER_02]: You've got everything you need right there.
- 24:49[SPEAKER_02]: And this is probably part and parcel of Kiffin and coaching mentality.
- 24:54[SPEAKER_02]: No, we need more of everything.
- 24:55[SPEAKER_02]: More, more, more, more, more.
- 24:57[SPEAKER_02]: And this, you know, insecurity, we got to get these other guys.
- 25:01[SPEAKER_02]: You know, you don't, you're going to where you got a, a $50 million a roster, you, you found the people to pony up for that, just, just go out there and play, but spectacular performance I thought by the Tigers, and then absolutely disastrous performance by the other Tigers, let's go ahead and get to them.
- 25:25[SPEAKER_02]: Brian remember back before a season we're talking intriguing coaches list and you thought Davos should have been high on my list and I said no, I've already given up on him.
- 25:33[SPEAKER_02]: I stand by my words, stand by my words, what was it like watching Clemson just get obliterated like them?
- 25:41[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and like, you know, I've seen Clemson, you know, over the years, and I just, they've never looked so helpless, like even back into the early depot days there, or even, you know, going back to hit what was previously, you know, his worst loss that Orange Bull against West Virginia when they, they just got absolutely trucked.
- 26:12[SPEAKER_00]: for a trend on to blow us out too bad.
- 26:13[SPEAKER_00]: You know, like there was always like that expectation, you know, coming in, like this is not gonna end well.
- 26:18[SPEAKER_00]: And it certainly didn't, and I mean, there's gonna be a lot of talk about the offense, like I mean, to have a 30.
- 26:26[SPEAKER_00]: first down, you know, disparity, you know, 31st downs.
- 26:29[SPEAKER_00]: That's the disparity between what you put up and what LSU did like that is eye opening and definitely concerning like I do think they they still have talent.
- 26:38[SPEAKER_00]: Like I mean, you saw some of the wide receivers made plays like they you know, I think, you know, they're certainly concerns along the offensive line, but you know, at the linebackers, you know, played
- 26:46[SPEAKER_00]: decently, you know, at times, you know, even allowing as many yards as they did, you know, I think there's, they're, they're just not going to see, you know, that level outside of Miami, you know, in the ACC, so like that's maybe a somewhat of a positive takeaway, but, you know, this is, I think the concerns about Debo, the concerns about the program at large.
- 27:05[SPEAKER_00]: they're not going to go away.
- 27:06[SPEAKER_00]: This is only going to accentuate them.
- 27:08[SPEAKER_00]: And if this turns in, you know, one loss turns into multiple losses, like a mirror, you're having comes in vans worry about their FCS opponents on their schedule.
- 27:15[SPEAKER_00]: Like that's that's not exactly where you want your program to be, especially when the when the head coach has a 50 plus million dollar buyout.
- 27:22[SPEAKER_00]: So real concerns, I think, there for the program itself.
- 27:25[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, to me, it just comes down to quarterback.
- 27:28[SPEAKER_00]: You know, like, you know, you had a generational run,
- 27:31[SPEAKER_00]: there at times that elevated you international titles, they don't have any of those guys there behind center at this point.
- 27:37[SPEAKER_00]: They didn't want to go out and get any of those guys either like, you know, for whether it be in the high school recruiting, whether it be through the transfer portal, like, you know, they've been so focused on themselves.
- 27:47[SPEAKER_00]: They had not, you know, kind of seen the force of the trees at this point, because it's it's it's a bad situation right now.
- 27:54[SPEAKER_00]: And now there's going to be a bit of a quarterback controversy
- 27:59[SPEAKER_00]: Young back up at this point before the second half is over and haven't played most of the fourth quarter you want there that's going to invite quarterback controversy throughout the season and I think there's there's going to be some real big questions big picture questions over.
- 28:14[SPEAKER_00]: Dabble is approach and what ultimately either needs to change for him or what the school needs to change with him moving forward.
- 28:21[SPEAKER_01]: Look I think there is.
- 28:24[SPEAKER_01]: There's an interesting dichotomy and like learning to take from it being LSU that did this to them in that for better or worse, LSU has done everything in its power to win football games at all costs.
- 28:37[SPEAKER_01]: It will push every bound.
- 28:39[SPEAKER_01]: It will have, again, like there's no loyalty on the LSU to the current LSU roster.
- 28:45[SPEAKER_01]: Like if there's an upgrade, we will go get it.
- 28:48[SPEAKER_01]: We will nearly get kicked out of the SEC to do it if we have to, right?
- 28:52[SPEAKER_01]: There is not that level of urgency inside the Clemson program, right?
- 28:56[SPEAKER_01]: And I understand why in 2022, or even in 2024, there was a feeling of maybe we can still do it our way, maybe we can survive a different way.
- 29:08[SPEAKER_01]: If that wasn't the biggest, most glaring,
- 29:12[SPEAKER_01]: It's over, man, it just is like it has to look different and it has to be drastic and if dabba is going to avoid driving this thing into the ground.
- 29:23[SPEAKER_01]: It is going to take drastic change in how they operate and how they structure the program and how they recruit in the people around dabba and those are going to be really, really hard conversations.
- 29:36[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't know who's the one who has to tell that about that.
- 29:40[SPEAKER_01]: And how does it get done?
- 29:42[SPEAKER_01]: Because again, with the buyout, what's the, are they actually gonna fire?
- 29:47[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I have no idea where you go from here other than like, this should, they should have already been at this point, but this was the most clearing.
- 29:57[SPEAKER_01]: Amen, it doesn't work anymore.
- 29:59[SPEAKER_01]: What we're trying to do, it doesn't work.
- 30:02[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I mean, that again, I thought that message was loud and clear last year, and it still didn't get through.
- 30:09[SPEAKER_02]: And that's the problem that the situation when you have a legend, the best coaching school history, and he's lost it.
- 30:22[SPEAKER_02]: What do you do?
- 30:28[SPEAKER_02]: deserve to cache a capital loyalty, admiration, and affection from the fan base.
- 30:35[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, two national championships like seven playoff appearances, it's unbelievable, unbelievable run.
- 30:43[SPEAKER_02]: Like other than Nick Sabin, nobody has had a run in the playoff era like him.
- 30:49[SPEAKER_02]: But now you get to this
- 30:51[SPEAKER_02]: And I don't know you how you handle it.
- 30:53[SPEAKER_02]: Graham Neffes a very sharp young athletic director, but he is in a tough position as is every other decision maker at Clemson here.
- 31:03[SPEAKER_02]: I just don't think there's a way you can fire him, but to your point Kevin, you have to get him to sit down and say, we have to do this differently, or we've got to figure out a way to, for everybody to move on.
- 31:16[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it almost reminds me of a Florida state and kind of the situation with Bobby Bowden towards the, you know, you spin in the wheels at quarterback.
- 31:25[SPEAKER_00]: Spin in the wheels at offense coordinator.
- 31:27[SPEAKER_00]: Like there is just a lot of issues.
- 31:29[SPEAKER_00]: Therefore, you know, Clemson and I think dabble that, you know, as led to this and it just reminds me of kind of the the end there for Bobby Bowden and Florida State.
- 31:38[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it reminds me.
- 31:40[SPEAKER_02]: almost carbon copy of what happened with Denny Kramin basketball, Louisville.
- 31:44[SPEAKER_02]: One two national titles in the 80s major changes to the sport.
- 31:49[SPEAKER_02]: First of all, on the three point line, Denny's like, we don't need the three point line.
- 31:53[SPEAKER_02]: Everybody else's like, oh, yeah, the three point line's going to change everything.
- 31:56[SPEAKER_02]: Rick Petino starts kicking his ass with the three point shot and and then it was everything else too.
- 32:02[SPEAKER_02]: It was recruiting Denny couldn't get academic qualifiers and
- 32:09[SPEAKER_02]: Like a 15 year erosion and a battle of like, how do we fix this?
- 32:17[SPEAKER_02]: How do we get out of this and get somebody else in here?
- 32:20[SPEAKER_02]: And that's Clemson, obviously it's football.
- 32:23[SPEAKER_02]: This is 2026, nobody's waiting 15 years, but the ability to,
- 32:30[SPEAKER_02]: maneuver around this or to navigate this is going to be fascinating to see.
- 32:36[SPEAKER_02]: Kevin, your point is great that like SLSU is everything.
- 32:42[SPEAKER_02]: Clemsons, Davos Winnie's Clemson is not in terms of how you build a roster and what the
- 32:49[SPEAKER_02]: the willingness to, to just say, we're gonna go get the best guys we can period.
- 32:56[SPEAKER_02]: We don't care about declared development, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera, and that's,
- 33:02[SPEAKER_02]: That's what's gotten that one of the position.
- 33:04[SPEAKER_02]: And you've been around in Brian, I know, and Kevin, you've certainly seen him.
- 33:09[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, that was one of those guys that is always convinced he's right.
- 33:13[SPEAKER_02]: And he was for a long time.
- 33:15[SPEAKER_02]: He was right.
- 33:16[SPEAKER_02]: And those guys are very difficult to all of a sudden get to move.
- 33:20[SPEAKER_02]: And it takes something probably like a 41.0 point beat down for anybody to probably even be able to sit down with him and say, look, that's not a fluke.
- 33:32[SPEAKER_02]: And we've got to we've got to change.
- 33:33[SPEAKER_02]: So, but deep, but it's the first game of the season.
- 33:36[SPEAKER_02]: You aren't changing this year.
- 33:37[SPEAKER_02]: You got your hand.
- 33:38[SPEAKER_02]: You go what you got.
- 33:39[SPEAKER_02]: And it's a bad hand.
- 33:40[SPEAKER_02]: So, we will see where it goes from here.
- 33:43[SPEAKER_02]: But if you're a Clemson fate like I would be sad right now if I were Clemson pink.
- 33:47[SPEAKER_02]: Because I don't want to see Davos we need to go out this way.
- 33:50[SPEAKER_02]: But I'd also be a little bit angry at his stubbornness and refusal to adapt.
- 34:01[SPEAKER_02]: team that certainly willing to go do what they got to do.
- 34:06[SPEAKER_02]: I saw last night in Nashville, Mississippi, Ole Miss playing Louisville, maybe the best game of the first weekend.
- 34:14[SPEAKER_02]: Really, really good game.
- 34:15[SPEAKER_02]: I was glad they played it.
- 34:17[SPEAKER_02]: I was glad they didn't opt to, you know, especially for Mississippi and the SEC opt like so many other teams
- 34:30[SPEAKER_02]: Struggling first half, both teams trying to figure some things out, Trinidad Chambers made a couple mistakes, and then the second half was just.
- 34:38[SPEAKER_02]: Star Wars.
- 34:39[SPEAKER_01]: It was fantastic.
- 34:40[SPEAKER_02]: I mean quite a display of big plays and speed and capability out there athletic capability Mississippi wins 41.38 on a field goal on the last play.
- 34:54[SPEAKER_02]: I thought Chambless showed reinforced wise the best quarterback in the SEC.
- 34:59[SPEAKER_02]: He was super super clutch when he had to be and he won lacing their running back got hurt early in the second half.
- 35:08[SPEAKER_02]: doesn't think it's serious, but they may do without him, most of his chameless, made it happen through to Doos Alexander, who's incredibly fast, 262 yard touchdowns there.
- 35:19[SPEAKER_02]: Meanwhile, Lincoln King holds first starting college for Louisville.
- 35:23[SPEAKER_02]: Couldn't manage the play clock to save his life for much of the game, but then when it was on the line, just balling, I mean, making plays, running, throwing, getting some guys deep.
- 35:33[SPEAKER_02]: So a great game there.
- 35:36[SPEAKER_02]: How do you feel about Mississippi in particular, Kevin, let's start with you and then any thoughts also on Louisville?
- 35:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I was in Lambo, so not watching a ton.
- 35:46[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah, right.
- 35:47[SPEAKER_01]: Picked in his pick my spots, but like, look, I think the second half version of Champions was unbelievable.
- 35:53[SPEAKER_01]: Like the moment you did watch, like,
- 35:56[SPEAKER_01]: I saw a few comparisons to like Bryce Young start to pop up and I like it, there is something to that where like this guy just has a magic about him.
- 36:07[SPEAKER_01]: He's super accurate.
- 36:09[SPEAKER_01]: He can push them all down the field and he makes winning play after winning play after winning play in big moments.
- 36:15[SPEAKER_01]: You can count on this guy and you know, they got challenged.
- 36:19[SPEAKER_01]: I give Louis was offense credit.
- 36:20[SPEAKER_01]: They were up for it every time and Chandler was just
- 36:24[SPEAKER_01]: strapped on the chin strap and said, all right, we'll get another one.
- 36:28[SPEAKER_01]: That's what it's going to take to that's what's going to take.
- 36:29[SPEAKER_01]: So I was impressed by him with that shot of a doubt.
- 36:32[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's where Ole Miss needs to be.
- 36:33[SPEAKER_01]: I think they're working progress.
- 36:34[SPEAKER_01]: They have to be better defensively, but again, they credit the level.
- 36:37[SPEAKER_01]: They're they're very good football team.
- 36:39[SPEAKER_01]: And that was a real test.
- 36:40[SPEAKER_01]: And we shouldn't punish teams for getting tested when we tell them that we, you should schedule tough.
- 36:47[SPEAKER_01]: Like this, this is, this is a game that should make Ole Miss better.
- 36:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I was really impressed.
- 36:52[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, like, you talked about a tale of two halves, too.
- 36:55[SPEAKER_00]: Like, you know, there was not like the Academy in the game, in terms of like peeping, pinging back and forth in that second half.
- 37:00[SPEAKER_00]: But, you know, Chambers had those two early turnovers and, you know, just didn't, didn't phase them.
- 37:05[SPEAKER_00]: Like, he's still on this silent smiling and these going out there, just dropping dimes.
- 37:09[SPEAKER_00]: And he is super impressive and you can understand why team like Ole Miss just kind of rallies around him whether it's in game whether it's given all the offield issues that it have gone on like he just is the leader of that team and you saw that with the way like I mean as soon as client old scored you know late late in the the fourth quarter there you're like all right there's there's too much time there.
- 37:29[SPEAKER_00]: for Trinidad to let him cook and certainly he did that getting his team down the field and getting in position two.
- 37:35[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe even go a little bit overly conservative there towards the end, you know, for Pete Golding in terms of the coaching decisions.
- 37:41[SPEAKER_00]: They led to that long field of old, but you know, you didn't really expect anything other than, you know, Trinidad Chambers to do his job in terms of getting that offense down the field.
- 37:50[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not sure that, you know, him being the second leading Russia with 60 yards and you won't lazy getting being
- 37:59[SPEAKER_00]: Because you definitely want to see a little bit more on the ground game a little bit just taking the pressure off of them at time I think you know if it's if old mess is able to run effectively Wait with key one lazy.
- 38:10[SPEAKER_00]: That does open up so much more in terms of the passing game and especially though the play action passing game Because even if you're double covering do salad Xander go and deep I'm not sure that that will be enough at times Even with some SEC difference of backs on the other side Get in down the road.
- 38:24[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he he was phenomenal in terms of getting
- 38:27[SPEAKER_00]: I guys, you know, turn it on the jets.
- 38:29[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, like, you could probably put together between him, Tray Richardson, Isaac Brown out there for Louisville as well.
- 38:34[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, there could be a nice little 4 by 100 track team, just from this game there in Nashville that you got to see Pat, but, you know, Kudos to both sides for playing it.
- 38:43[SPEAKER_00]: I thought it was, you know, probably the game of the weekend at this point in terms of just entertainment factor.
- 38:47[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, I probably do leave
- 38:50[SPEAKER_00]: feeling a lot better about both sides, you know, like, I mean, I think there were some some question marks I had coming in just in terms of people as a coach in terms of what the rest of the roster would look like, what the offense would look like without Charlie White's junior calling plays, you know, because he definitely did that all of last season.
- 39:05[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, I think there were some some question marks in terms of can this really be another year where they compete for couchable playoff.
- 39:11[SPEAKER_00]: I think that that tech mark that box has been been checked and I think, you know, for Louisville, you know, yes, there were some definite concerns and it was a slow start,
- 39:20[SPEAKER_00]: You look at this team.
- 39:20[SPEAKER_00]: If they can stop making some mistakes, that is a team that can contend in the ACC.
- 39:25[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, maybe not quite to Miami's level sure, but if you're talking about making it to Charlotte being in the thick of a playoff conversation late in the year, that they showed enough.
- 39:33[SPEAKER_00]: They've got enough dudes.
- 39:34[SPEAKER_00]: They've got enough on both sides of the ball where they can be a factor in the ACC.
- 39:38[SPEAKER_00]: And I think if you're a level fan, that's probably the most encouraging thing.
- 39:41[SPEAKER_00]: You're walking out of that Nissan Stadium for saying, hey, we've got a team this
- 39:46[SPEAKER_02]: The other games Sunday night and of course they were at the same time because why wouldn't college football play to two of the rare high profile games of the first week and at the exact same time.
- 39:58[SPEAKER_02]: Notre Dame Wisconsin Kevin was there.
- 40:02[SPEAKER_02]: uniform matchup was something.
- 40:06[SPEAKER_02]: All red for Wisconsin.
- 40:09[SPEAKER_02]: All blue plus the gold lids for Notre Dame.
- 40:13[SPEAKER_02]: I kind of liked it.
- 40:13[SPEAKER_02]: I was okay with it.
- 40:15[SPEAKER_02]: I don't like Wisconsin's regular uniform.
- 40:17[SPEAKER_02]: So I thought this was kind of a nice switch up, but.
- 40:23[SPEAKER_02]: Thoughts there was constant to me acquitted itself pretty well, but then in the end, Notre Dame Notre Dame got down to business and exerted itself.
- 40:34[SPEAKER_02]: I did not see a lot of it because I wasn't Nashville.
- 40:37[SPEAKER_02]: Kevin, you were there.
- 40:38[SPEAKER_02]: What did you see?
- 40:40[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the two enormous mistakes by Wisconsin, the Mufft Kick, which, by the way, I thought was a really bad call.
- 40:46[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know how they didn't over turn that.
- 40:48[SPEAKER_02]: What was out of bounds, right?
- 40:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, to me it seemed pretty obvious he was juggling it.
- 40:52[SPEAKER_01]: And again, the benefit of the doubt would be, you know, you couldn't quite overturn it.
- 40:57[SPEAKER_01]: But to me, I thought it was an overturning.
- 40:59[SPEAKER_01]: That was a huge moment of the game.
- 41:01[SPEAKER_01]: And then the other big moment was the Joseph Pixick switch.
- 41:04[SPEAKER_01]: was a timing issue.
- 41:06[SPEAKER_01]: That was the one thing I will say.
- 41:07[SPEAKER_01]: I was generally pretty pleased looking at what Wisconsin did.
- 41:12[SPEAKER_01]: On both sides of the ball, I thought their line play was significantly improved.
- 41:17[SPEAKER_01]: They pushed Notre Dame around a little bit, with their defensive line and moved people and made life difficult at two strip sacks that could have been huge swing plays in the game that just couldn't come up with the ball on.
- 41:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I was not that impressed by Joseph, right?
- 41:33[SPEAKER_01]: I think, look, they're going to have to run him and run him really effectively because just the timing and the anticipation was lacking with some of the throws.
- 41:43[SPEAKER_01]: And there were some, I think there's some receivers, like they have some weapons now to put around him.
- 41:48[SPEAKER_01]: And I just, I didn't feel like Joseph was putting those guys in a great position
- 41:57[SPEAKER_01]: I think Wisconsin will be fine.
- 41:59[SPEAKER_01]: I think they're probably like a six and six, seven and five type of ball club, which is probably the worst case scenario in some respect.
- 42:06[SPEAKER_01]: And it doesn't leave you 100% confident and fickle going forward, but it doesn't, you know, you gotta win when you get on games part of it.
- 42:15[SPEAKER_01]: like they look competitive.
- 42:16[SPEAKER_01]: I just, you know, this guy's going to change the game.
- 42:19[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know about that.
- 42:20[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't think Notre Dame played particularly well.
- 42:22[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think it's like a huge concern.
- 42:24[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it's the day they've time to figure some stuff out, but again, I thought the line play had taken a step back that didn't run it as effectively.
- 42:32[SPEAKER_01]: That was like a Bb minus game from Notre Dame and then on before touchdowns against a big 10 team.
- 42:36[SPEAKER_01]: So I guess from that perspective, if you're really good at that, if you're in Notre Dame and maybe that's just a standard to put them to is the, you know, pre-season favor and all that, but yeah, I think the things to work on certainly for for Notre Dame, but very opportunistic to advantage the two big mistakes and able to put up a compelling final score even if the performance at times was up and down.
- 42:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, this is not going to be a stain on Notre Dame's resume, like maybe we kind of thought coming into the year, you know, just in terms of not being a quality win.
- 43:05[SPEAKER_00]: I think we will kind of look at this as whether, you know, what's going to make us a whole game.
- 43:08[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I do think they are vastly improved and look, they went out and they invested in the roster, you know, this past off season and, you know, that kind of showed up.
- 43:17[SPEAKER_00]: They were better along the defensive line that will pay off dividends in big ten play, you know, I think they're probably some concerns if you're The offensive staff in terms of the ability to run the ball.
- 43:27[SPEAKER_00]: I know it's going to be tough against Notre Dame given that front seven and what they have coming back and you know what they are able to show.
- 43:34[SPEAKER_00]: When they really want to put the clamps on teams, you know, this was, you know, to Kevin's credit like I mean, this was a very modest effort, you know, I think for the Irish like it was almost like, you know, kind of preseason game number two, you know, like they were just kind of warming up a little bit in the first half and then.
- 43:49[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, well we'll get the playmakers out for the second half while we'll try the mountain we'll pull away and that's what good teams do and like that was not what Oregon did this weekend You know that was not what some of the other contenders that are kind of in that same bracket as as the Irish did You know that they actually put their you know foot down in the second half and I give I give them a lot of credit.
- 44:08[SPEAKER_00]: I think there will be much sharper you know for again number two of moving forward
- 44:11[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just because, you know, it did look like they were, you know, I don't know if they did too much specifically towards Wisconsin.
- 44:18[SPEAKER_00]: It was almost like they were, they were so focused on themselves throughout camp, throughout, you know, spring ball, throughout, you know, even in the lead up to this game.
- 44:26[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, we're going to play our game and you're just going to be the nameless faceless opponent on the other side.
- 44:32[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, I do give, you know, I think CJ Carr is going to be better than 19 of 29.
- 44:36[SPEAKER_00]: Like, you know, I think,
- 44:37[SPEAKER_00]: The running game is pointed to better.
- 44:38[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, so many times, it was just like, we're going to run a draw right at the middle and into massive bodies in the middle.
- 44:44[SPEAKER_00]: And that was kind of the run game.
- 44:46[SPEAKER_00]: There was nothing creative necessarily in terms of some of the play designs that they did.
- 44:51[SPEAKER_00]: I think that they were just an overall solid effort for the Irish.
- 44:54[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not going to document any points for that first half.
- 44:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, they were a little bit lucky, you know, to maintain the lead.
- 44:59[SPEAKER_00]: But this was taking care of business in the second half and at this point in the zoom.
- 45:03[SPEAKER_00]: That's that's that's what you get you got to do and I'm not saying that there's anything that I'm changing my mind about Notre Dame at this point.
- 45:12[SPEAKER_00]: But you know, we all know that the tougher tests what they need to build up towards.
- 45:17[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to be later in the season when Miami comes to town when they go to BYU, those are the games where you really got to be on the top of your game and if you're building towards that, if you're peeking at those times, that's going to be a late to the post-season success that they really know and want there and stuff.
- 45:34[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I mean, look, think of some of the ways that Notre Dame is played early in the season under Marcus Freeman.
- 45:39[SPEAKER_02]: We've seen absolute disasters.
- 45:41[SPEAKER_02]: So you'll take a four touchdown win in a semi-neutral site against a big 10 opponent.
- 45:48[SPEAKER_02]: It was not dazzling, but it sure beats losing to Marshall, Northern Illinois, or starting on two last year.
- 45:56[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not concerned about Notre Dame.
- 45:59[SPEAKER_02]: The other excellent game of the weekend did one hit quickly Oregon boysy state much better game I think than a lot of us anticipated kudos to the Broncos really showed up in Austin and played really well had Oregon on the ropes for much of the day.
- 46:21[SPEAKER_02]: I watched that.
- 46:23[SPEAKER_02]: and think, okay, I mean, Oregon's certainly got some some players and some ability, but that's not landing sometimes.
- 46:30[SPEAKER_02]: He doesn't start the season very well.
- 46:31[SPEAKER_02]: They've had some ugly wins.
- 46:33[SPEAKER_02]: They've had at least one brutal loss.
- 46:37[SPEAKER_02]: But Boise, I'm looking at them and I'm saying even in defeat, that's the best group of 16.
- 46:42[SPEAKER_02]: Brian, you're reaction to that one, and we'll hit a couple of other games real quick.
- 46:47[SPEAKER_00]: All right, fire and out the bus Pat, I think.
- 46:50[SPEAKER_02]: The buses at least idling, the buses idling, or we're, we're, we're, we're on standby.
- 46:56[SPEAKER_02]: I think we're about ready.
- 46:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, look, this is another group of six program that you know, spit well enough to keep the team together.
- 47:04[SPEAKER_00]: You know, they had from last year and each saw the carryover, I think there was, you know, Maddox, Max and made, made place.
- 47:10[SPEAKER_00]: Like, you know, he went out there and against a pretty good secondary and pretty good defense, you know, even at times, you know, boys just take kind of push to around a really good, you know, front seven.
- 47:19[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, we're able to find some success.
- 47:21[SPEAKER_00]: I think even though it was defeat and you know, they did have a 10-point lead at some point, like, I mean,
- 47:26[SPEAKER_00]: This was, this was a game where you can go to the committee and say, look, we're capable of playing on the field of a national title, and I think that's going to carry over down the road.
- 47:36[SPEAKER_00]: And look, this is a voicey state team at two is going to be the nexus of the group of six to serve discussion moving forward.
- 47:41[SPEAKER_00]: They're going to play Memphis.
- 47:42[SPEAKER_00]: They're going to play Western Michigan.
- 47:44[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, those are two massive games in terms of, all right, where is kind of everybody in this new kind of landscape.
- 47:50[SPEAKER_00]: All right, we, we've got a great data point in terms of voicey state.
- 47:52[SPEAKER_00]: compared to contenders, we're going to have a great data point, compared to maybe one of the top teams in the American and the Mac, as well, obviously they're playing in the Pac-12.
- 48:00[SPEAKER_00]: So they got a Colorado state and some of the others that they're going to play in the year.
- 48:04[SPEAKER_00]: So great thing for, I think, Boise State in terms of leaving this game, impressing everybody.
- 48:10[SPEAKER_00]: For Oregon, I think there are a lot of correctable issues, like Fountain Ward didn't play particularly well.
- 48:14[SPEAKER_00]: You know, he's capable of
- 48:15[SPEAKER_00]: of doing more, maybe it's just kind of those first game jitters with two new coordinators on both sides of the ball that kind of led to this being a little bit closer than expected, but less concerns, you know, certainly about Boise State moving forward, even though they do have a pretty good difficult schedule moving forward.
- 48:30[SPEAKER_00]: I think they're clearly the class of the G6 and we'll see what happens with some of those other non-conference games and what looks to be a brutal slate for the Broncos moving forward.
- 48:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, good step for Boise, more work to do for Oregon.
- 48:44[SPEAKER_01]: But again, look, I thought there were a few plays in that game, especially in the first half where Boise tackling was otherworldly.
- 48:53[SPEAKER_01]: And it's tough to bring some of those Oregon guys down in space.
- 48:56[SPEAKER_01]: They're super slippery, they're super fast.
- 48:58[SPEAKER_01]: And I think Oregon moved the football well and could have moved the a lot better if they had broken a couple of those.
- 49:04[SPEAKER_01]: And I was, again, I credit the Boise, but also, I'm not sure how replicable it is.
- 49:11[SPEAKER_02]: uh... couple of the games here i was at indian and or taxes see the raining champs and they got guys again turned the opening kickoff sixty seven yards court of touchdown three plays later nick marsh the who showed up in gold cleats and got ripped during spring practice makes a ridiculous one handed catch
- 49:34[SPEAKER_02]: And then Charlie Becker is Charlie Becker, Josh Hoover was great.
- 49:37[SPEAKER_02]: Nearly got his head torn off, blood dripping down his face, still making plays.
- 49:42[SPEAKER_02]: And I will say, Fernando Mendoza was underrated tough.
- 49:47[SPEAKER_02]: Like he took shots and kept coming all last year.
- 49:50[SPEAKER_02]: This was a great moment for Josh Hoover to step in and say, hey, come with me, guys, I'm tough, too.
- 49:57[SPEAKER_02]: Let's go.
- 49:58[SPEAKER_02]: And I do reference the three by five card on.
- 50:03[SPEAKER_02]: Kurt Signetti's desk that says there will be no softness in this program, softness will not be tolerated.
- 50:10[SPEAKER_02]: Well, your quarterback is not soft.
- 50:13[SPEAKER_02]: Their defense was kind of soft, really didn't play very well at all.
- 50:16[SPEAKER_02]: And Signetti acknowledged that afterwards, the other thing from that game was just how freaking hot it was.
- 50:23[SPEAKER_02]: The hottest game I've ever been to that wasn't in Florida or Texas.
- 50:26[SPEAKER_02]: It was just
- 50:32[SPEAKER_02]: thermometer set of 150, that's 105 oh, and I did, I stopped sig on the way off the field.
- 50:41[SPEAKER_02]: I said, man, that was hot.
- 50:42[SPEAKER_02]: He goes leap in a and kept moving.
- 50:44[SPEAKER_02]: He wanted to get off the field as soon as possible.
- 50:50[SPEAKER_02]: Anyway, I, I think Indiana's fine Indiana's rolling again.
- 50:54[SPEAKER_02]: I think the defense will get better.
- 50:56[SPEAKER_02]: If you look last year, they didn't start well defensively installed dominion and Colton Joseph.
- 51:01[SPEAKER_02]: Things happen there.
- 51:02[SPEAKER_02]: I think they'll be okay.
- 51:03[SPEAKER_02]: If you got anything there and then also UCLA and California battle of two first time coaches.
- 51:10[SPEAKER_02]: Calamoni game.
- 51:12[SPEAKER_02]: They should be playing each other always.
- 51:13[SPEAKER_02]: They don't anymore.
- 51:15[SPEAKER_02]: UCLA big fourth quarter to win the game there and a big start for Bob Chesney thoughts on either but probably not both because we're trying to get this done in 60 minutes or one second.
- 51:27[SPEAKER_00]: The only thing I add to the Indiana thing is, yeah, the second area in particular, a little bit concerning, knowing that, you know, Jeremiah Smith is waiting down the road, some of those big team court, including USC in Oregon like that, probably be the biggest concern and take away from me is yes Indiana's offense, we knew they were going to look good, you know, you have full faith and in sick to not only find a quarterback to but to elevate their game, he's done that again in Joshua for.
- 51:52[SPEAKER_00]: The question in my mind is just, you know, bright hands and that defense can make gel over these next couple of weeks in terms of that warm up to a big template.
- 52:00[SPEAKER_01]: You see how like how front.
- 52:01[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, again, it sounds stupid to talk like this about UCLA, but like I don't know man the vibes just look awesome Like they're their sideline looks amazing like Chesney has like again, he's like central casting for like what the UCLA football coach would look like He's got a command of this thing.
- 52:20[SPEAKER_01]: They've got like the old guys, you know like Chesney senior and a couple the other guys run around the sideline
- 52:25[SPEAKER_01]: they seem to like genuinely enjoy each other's company and love playing football and they're really darn good and explicit in the run game and a lot of fun to watch and I didn't even think Nico played particularly well in this game, especially throwing it.
- 52:36[SPEAKER_01]: I think there's room to grow here.
- 52:38[SPEAKER_01]: I've talked about this previously, like I think
- 52:41[SPEAKER_01]: Nikolja Maliava is like the, you know, the supercharged version of everything that Bob Chessings had as far as quarterback play and in his coaching career at past apps.
- 52:51[SPEAKER_01]: And so yeah, I mean, I'm bullish.
- 52:53[SPEAKER_01]: I thought they took some punches there in the third quarter and got right back up off the mat and beat him by three scores and that was that was a statement early.
- 53:01[SPEAKER_01]: And again, the schedule is manageable, especially early.
- 53:05[SPEAKER_01]: Like again, I was sitting there.
- 53:07[SPEAKER_01]: It's one of the morning.
- 53:08[SPEAKER_01]: I'm probably probably of watched like 13 hours of football that day, and I'm sitting there thinking of myself about 11, you know, 7 and 1 UCLA heading into November.
- 53:16[SPEAKER_01]: I'm thinking about it.
- 53:17[SPEAKER_01]: It's not impossible folks.
- 53:19[SPEAKER_01]: It's really not.
- 53:20[SPEAKER_01]: They might be favored to get that.
- 53:22[SPEAKER_01]: They might be favored and then to each individual game other than Oregon will say, let's let's have it.
- 53:26[SPEAKER_01]: I want you.
- 53:27[SPEAKER_02]: If you want to tell me I can go cover meaningful games in the Rose Bowl in November, I'm up for it.
- 53:34[SPEAKER_02]: Sign me up as opposed to maybe like trying to get to state college in November.
- 53:38[SPEAKER_01]: Come on.
- 53:39[SPEAKER_02]: Give it to me.
- 53:41[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, no, I think it's great.
- 53:43[SPEAKER_02]: And to me, UCLA has been arguably the biggest under a cheever in all of college football over the decades, really since Terry Donningu left, which was quite a while ago.
- 53:56[SPEAKER_02]: That's a program that should be better than it has been in promising new start.
- 54:01[SPEAKER_02]: We'll see where it goes.
- 54:02[SPEAKER_02]: See if they can can maintain.
- 54:05[SPEAKER_02]: All right, fellas.
- 54:08[SPEAKER_02]: To standing features here on the pod, we we hand out the Heisman every week and we fire somebody every week.
- 54:15[SPEAKER_02]: Let's let's start with the start with the Heisman.
- 54:19[SPEAKER_02]: Brian, who you who you give in the Heisman.
- 54:21[SPEAKER_00]: I'm gonna go with Duke running back in each shepherd.
- 54:25[SPEAKER_00]: 227 yards, two touchdowns, he carried the blue devils.
- 54:28[SPEAKER_00]: It was not a great offense of effort for them in a win over to Lane, but he really carried that team on and on in his back.
- 54:35[SPEAKER_00]: I'm had some questionable quarterback play.
- 54:38[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, Kudos to him, I think two lines of game plan was to get in there and kind of slow the run and all this talk about Duke kind of throwing over the place with a bit of opening up on the offense.
- 54:49[SPEAKER_00]: It's all about the run game and, you know, he definitely let, I think he's still leading the country as, as a week one in terms of rushing so that you know, could us to name.
- 54:58[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, uh, I went with Fennel.
- 55:00[SPEAKER_01]: We talked about trying to add Jamless.
- 55:01[SPEAKER_01]: I went with the other misses to be quarterback, uh, Camario Taylor, a lot of excitement.
- 55:06[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, I know he, he turned heads at the Manning Passing Academy.
- 55:09[SPEAKER_01]: He's got all the tools.
- 55:11[SPEAKER_01]: I, I encourage anyone who hasn't seen it yet to go watch the 70 or touchdown pass that he threw in the third quarter of that game.
- 55:19[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, against again, Louisiana and Role,
- 55:22[SPEAKER_01]: that like I have never seen a ball explode off of a quarterbacks hand the way that that ball like it looks different man it looks different and look it's it's all that have really dynamic quarterbacks at places that are fighting the uphill battle right like look I think Mississippi State's gonna be an underdog and most of it's as you see slate like I'm excited about the fact that
- 55:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like, we get Lenora Sellers versus Camario Taylor in a couple of weeks.
- 55:49[SPEAKER_01]: That's a heck of a quarterback medal.
- 55:50[SPEAKER_01]: We get Qon Russell versus Camario Taylor.
- 55:52[SPEAKER_01]: Come with, like, there's going to be a reason to watch Mississippi say football.
- 55:55[SPEAKER_01]: For that, he gets, he gets highs when we won.
- 55:57[SPEAKER_01]: Tune in.
- 55:59[SPEAKER_02]: I saw you know he they kind of surprised started him in the egg bowl last year.
- 56:04[SPEAKER_02]: I mean talk about something to shove a guy into and he was He showed that the skills I mean the talent and the skills and then everything I heard like the manning passenger academy in the summer he just dazzled everybody not just with his throwing but.
- 56:20[SPEAKER_02]: kind of the way he handled himself.
- 56:22[SPEAKER_02]: And that's one of those things like that is such a job interview because the mannings are watching very closely how you handle yourself.
- 56:31[SPEAKER_02]: It's one of the things that sunk Johnny Manzel.
- 56:34[SPEAKER_02]: Several many, many years ago, is you go to the Manning Cat Passen Academy and you show your ass and it will follow you because everybody the mannings have a few connections in the NFL.
- 56:44[SPEAKER_02]: They might be able to pass along a recommendation or a thumbs down.
- 56:48[SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, I'm excited to watch him play.
- 56:51[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going with Malachi Tony.
- 56:53[SPEAKER_02]: I'm sorry to be obvious, but good God.
- 56:56[SPEAKER_02]: And I know producer can't want to talk a little bit about JJ Smith and and Malachi Tony to South Florida guys who are friends and both played great and both kind of had dueling Heisman poses, but Malachi looked like the Heisman winner to me.
- 57:12[SPEAKER_02]: He was unbelievable against Stanford 12 catches 234 yards three touchdowns he had seven for 141 and two TDs after a quarter and a half.
- 57:24[SPEAKER_02]: like he just could not be covered.
- 57:26[SPEAKER_02]: He is so quick, but also so like precise with his routes.
- 57:31[SPEAKER_02]: You just can't cover him.
- 57:33[SPEAKER_02]: And he's played, I told, I guess it's like maybe 16 college games.
- 57:38[SPEAKER_02]: Now, I want to watch him play the rest of the season.
- 57:42[SPEAKER_02]: And next year, and say thank you very much for being
- 57:49[SPEAKER_02]: Let's get on with the negative time to fire somebody, Gavin, who are you firing?
- 57:54[SPEAKER_01]: I think I already fired Davos, so I'll take a second.
- 57:57[SPEAKER_01]: I think, look, I think the world of Kyle Whittingham is a coach, but I was already a little skittish about the, like does he truly get what he's walking into here and if he didn't, he's either gonna get it now or he's never gonna, because the response to this game and their performance and their deserved loss,
- 58:19[SPEAKER_01]: Will be what will be strong.
- 58:21[SPEAKER_01]: I know I saw this morning.
- 58:22[SPEAKER_01]: He addressed borders.
- 58:23[SPEAKER_01]: He said that Underwoods the starter for now, but he doesn't have an infinite leash or something to that extent.
- 58:29[SPEAKER_01]: That is not a great sign.
- 58:30[SPEAKER_01]: Right underwood.
- 58:31[SPEAKER_01]: As I've seen on Twitter was more expensive than Maloozi and a purchase.
- 58:35[SPEAKER_01]: That that that is the meme going around.
- 58:37[SPEAKER_01]: Like good tweet.
- 58:38[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 58:38[SPEAKER_01]: very good.
- 58:39[SPEAKER_01]: So I am worried that there will not be the leash for Kyle wedding him to build the type of program the Kyle wedding him likes to build.
- 58:46[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, especially if he hasn't seen what he's like a true Michigan man.
- 58:51[SPEAKER_00]: I will go with Greg Shionno.
- 58:53[SPEAKER_00]: I would put that one up there.
- 58:54[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, like losing a UMass, man.
- 58:57[SPEAKER_00]: Not only losing a UMass, but getting pushed around, getting blown out by UMass.
- 59:02[SPEAKER_00]: Put like, you're a big tin team.
- 59:04[SPEAKER_00]: And it's not like, you have a $5 million dollar and I owe a budget.
- 59:07[SPEAKER_00]: You got significantly more than that.
- 59:09[SPEAKER_00]: Like, they were excited about this team and what they had.
- 59:13[SPEAKER_00]: And then like, you talk about letting the hair out of the bloom.
- 59:17[SPEAKER_00]: that the colors on WFA in afterwards were like riceless after this one.
- 59:22[SPEAKER_00]: And it like it rises to a level, you know, to get the Rutgers fans who have been there for decades at this point, but watch some really, really bad football.
- 59:31[SPEAKER_00]: Sure call on in as WFA in and say, and you want, I'm done.
- 59:34[SPEAKER_00]: I'm done with this.
- 59:35[SPEAKER_00]: And so, for that, for losing to UMass, a team ahead, you know, not one in single game last year, you know, Greg Shionong gets to get the actual, Brent Key was, was probably a close second choice, and given the way, kind of mismanagement towards the end of the game against Colorado, that the fact that his offense is aligned to not look all that great, you know, against the buffs that, I think Brent Key also deserves a bit of an honorable mention in this category as well.
- 59:58[SPEAKER_01]: Can I just chime in real quick, Pat and say that you're like, I think we should fire Brent pry again for pop blots is not being the quarterback.
- 1:00:06[SPEAKER_01]: Like, like, like, date, date, they rode the Kyron drones bus for multiple years.
- 1:00:12[SPEAKER_01]: They kept watching it over and over again and they never thought is guy might have something here.
- 1:00:17[SPEAKER_01]: Like, whoa, that's, that's a bad look.
- 1:00:19[SPEAKER_01]: He's really good.
- 1:00:20[SPEAKER_01]: I love pop blots and I'm all in.
- 1:00:22[SPEAKER_02]: Can't fire him again, he's already been fired there.
- 1:00:26[SPEAKER_02]: But, you know, the Rutgers loss was so bad, it became a political issue.
- 1:00:33[SPEAKER_02]: We saw the New Jersey GOP put out a tweet saying that the Democratic and told controlled legislature had given Rutgers $5 million for athletics or whatever.
- 1:00:47[SPEAKER_02]: And this is the product.
- 1:00:50[SPEAKER_02]: So it's now it's a political issue going into the elections.
- 1:00:53[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think that's going to be enough to turn New Jersey red But stay tuned if things keep going that bad, but that I would absolutely have gone with Shionno, but there's also another candidate The worst debut game of the weekend was Eric Morris at Oklahoma State they brought in
- 1:01:15[SPEAKER_02]: The quarterback, the running back, the wide receiver, and a bunch of other guys from North Texas, they were gonna be explosive, exciting.
- 1:01:25[SPEAKER_02]: They were gonna have to be one of those teams to take this big jump up when you import a bunch of players from somewhere else.
- 1:01:31[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, except they lost by two touchdowns to Tulsa, just a disastrous opening performance they produced
- 1:01:41[SPEAKER_02]: 368 total yards, 4.3 yards per play, very pedestrian, and Eric Morris with he's want to know against Armadillo's in his backyard shooting and killing one, talked about that.
- 1:01:56[SPEAKER_02]: He's Owen won against Tulsa, and that was a very bad start for him.
- 1:02:01[SPEAKER_02]: So.
- 1:02:02[SPEAKER_02]: producer can't tell I think we've gone past 60 minutes in one second so we'll save any stupid story for next week.
- 1:02:11[SPEAKER_02]: That's the show.
- 1:02:12[SPEAKER_02]: I hope you're a day times out well you find an extra second for yourself somewhere everybody thanks for listening.
- 1:02:18[SPEAKER_02]: We'll be back next week.
