- Lucas: Welcome back to another episode of Learn Danish with Fexingo. I am Lucas. Luna: And I am Luna. It is so good to be here again. Lucas: Yes. We have been traveling quite a lot lately in our episodes. Luna: We went to the bakery, then the zoo, then the optician. Lucas: That is true. Today we are going somewhere quiet. Luna: A library? Or maybe a museum? Lucas: Close. A bookstore. But not just any bookstore. Luna: Oh. Is it a special one? Lucas: It is a place where we can practice some very useful phrases. Luna: I love bookstores. The smell of old paper is the best. Lucas: Agreed. So let us imagine we are walking into a large bookstore in Copenhagen. Luna: Okay. I am inside now. It smells like coffee and books. Lucas: Perfect. The first thing you usually want to do is find a section. Luna: Right. You do not just walk around blindly. Lucas: Exactly. So how do you ask where the books are? Luna: Do I say 'Where are the books'? Lucas: Yes. In Danish, that is 'Hvor er bøgerne'. Let me say it slowly. Lucas: Hvor er bøgerne. Luna: Hvor er bøgerne. Lucas: Good. 'Hvor' means where. 'Er' means are. 'Bøgerne' means the books. Luna: So literally: Where are the books? Lucas: Exactly. And notice the 'ne' at the end. That makes it definite plural. Luna: Got it. Hvor er bøgerne. Lucas: Now, imagine you are talking to a staff member. Luna: Hi. Hvor er bøgerne? Lucas: They might point you to the fiction section. Luna: Great. Now I want to look for something specific. Lucas: You might say 'I am looking for a good book'. Luna: That sounds polite. How do we say that? Lucas: It is 'Jeg leder efter en god bog'. Lucas: Jeg leder efter en god bog. Luna: Jeg leder efter en god bog. Lucas: Very nice. 'Jeg' is I. 'Ledder efter' is looking for. Luna: And 'en god bog' is a good book. Lucas: Correct. So you can use this phrase when you need help. Luna: Let me try it all together. Jeg leder efter en god bog. Lucas: Perfect pronunciation. The 'g' in bog is soft, but clear. Luna: Okay. I am standing in front of a shelf. Lucas: You see many titles. You are not sure which one to pick. Luna: I always get overwhelmed by choices. Especially in English. Lucas: Same here. So you turn to the person next to you. Luna: Or the clerk. And ask for advice. Lucas: Yes. You ask 'Can you recommend a book'? Luna: Is that hard to say? Lucas: It is a bit longer, but very useful. Listen carefully. Lucas: Kan du anbefale en bog? Luna: Kan du anbefale en bog? Lucas: Again. Kan du anbefale en bog? Luna: Kan du anbefale en bog? Lucas: Excellent. 'Kan du' is can you. 'Anbefale' is to recommend. Luna: I love that word. Anbefale. It sounds professional. Lucas: It is. And it works in many situations. Not just books. Luna: True. You can recommend a restaurant too. Lucas: Exactly. So the clerk points you to a blue cover. Luna: Oh, I like this one. I think I will buy it. Lucas: So you take it to the counter. Luna: How do I tell them I am taking it? Lucas: You say 'I am taking this book'. Luna: Simple. Okay. Jeg tager denne bog. Lucas: Listen. Jeg tager denne bog. Luna: Jeg tager denne bog. Lucas: Good. 'Jeg tager' is I take. 'Denne' is this. Luna: And 'bog' is book. So I take this book. Lucas: Precisely. It is a very direct way to start the transaction. Luna: I feel efficient. Like a pro shopper. Lucas: You are becoming one. Now, you just need to know the price. Luna: Ah, yes. Money talk. Lucas: Don't worry. This phrase is short and sweet. Lucas: Hvor meget koster den? Luna: Hvor meget koster den? Lucas: Again. Hvor meget koster den? Luna: Hvor meget koster den? Lucas: Very good. 'Hvor meget' is how much. 'Koster' is costs. Luna: And 'den' refers to the book. Because it is common gender. Lucas: Spot on. If it were plural, you would say 'dem'. But here it is singular. Luna: So how much does it cost? Lucas: Exactly. Let us put it all together in a quick scene. Luna: Okay. I am at the counter. Lucas: You hand over the book. Luna: Jeg tager denne bog. Hvor meget koster den? Lucas: Perfect flow. You sound completely natural. Luna: I feel proud. I could actually go to a bookstore in Denmark tomorrow. Lucas: I believe you could. You have learned five solid phrases today. Luna: Hvor er bøgerne. Jeg leder efter en god bog. Kan du anbefale en bog? Jeg tager denne bog. Hvor meget koster den? Lucas: Beautifully recited. Repeat them in your head as you walk today. Luna: I will. It feels good to have these tools.
