- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah, that.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Chuck Norris was chasing the Tyrannosaurus Rex.
- 0:05Speaker 1: The rex was not chasing the jeep. Murray, Murray, you there,
- 0:09Speaker 1: you love sandwiches. Huh, Let's go to uh eighty.
- 0:13Speaker 2: It was bo.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Wow that Prime Time maybe had a crush on Betty Rubbell.
- 0:19Speaker 2: I honestly, until after the segment ended and we went
- 0:22Speaker 2: to commercial break, had no idea that Jonathan Coachman was black.
- 0:25Speaker 1: He caught them the game last night, although they won
- 0:28Speaker 1: the game. It is to.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Sports book Set Davis is going to join us from
- 0:33Speaker 2: CBS Sports. Get us ready here for what's going to
- 0:36Speaker 2: be a great Final four coming up this weekend. There
- 0:40Speaker 2: was some news Israel involving Tiger Woods, who got yet
- 0:46Speaker 2: another car accident rollover, went to jail.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Mug shots were not didn't look good.
- 0:53Speaker 2: They looked similar to other mug shots we have seen
- 0:56Speaker 2: from Tiger Woods, and it's kind of interesting. Now Tiger
- 0:59Speaker 2: Woods is released a statement where he is going to
- 1:02Speaker 2: step away from the game ask for privacy as he
- 1:05Speaker 2: tries to recover. He realizes he has a problem. It
- 1:08Speaker 2: seems like his friends or someone close to him has
- 1:10Speaker 2: spoken to Tiger Woods, but that is the best case
- 1:13Speaker 2: scenario at least as far as I'm concerned for Tiger Woods,
- 1:17Speaker 2: is to step away from golf, because what Tiger Woods
- 1:20Speaker 2: is doing is trying to please himself and trying to
- 1:23Speaker 2: please us by getting himself healthy, because five green jackets
- 1:27Speaker 2: isn't enough. And I hope someone sat him down and said.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Hey, Tiger, you're the greatest golfer that's ever lived.
- 1:33Speaker 3: You've done enough.
- 1:34Speaker 2: You don't need to do anymore, and you certainly don't
- 1:36Speaker 2: need to do it at the risk of your own body,
- 1:39Speaker 2: your own health, and your own family.
- 1:40Speaker 3: Yeah, there's just a lot to this story.
- 1:44Speaker 4: For starters, it feels like, man, it feels like people
- 1:48Speaker 4: want to try to overthink this or try to like
- 1:53Speaker 4: get in Tiger's head or try to, you know, sort
- 1:57Speaker 4: of piece together how we got here.
- 1:58Speaker 3: And it's just like, I think we're kind of over
- 2:01Speaker 3: thinking this thing.
- 2:01Speaker 4: Like everybody's saying to everybody saying, oh, get a driver,
- 2:04Speaker 4: Like that'll solve everything, will it.
- 2:07Speaker 3: I mean, let's think about this for a second.
- 2:08Speaker 4: Okay, So if he has to stay to himself, forget
- 2:13Speaker 4: everybody else, he has to say to himself, oh, I've
- 2:16Speaker 4: got a problem here. I can't stop taking these pain
- 2:19Speaker 4: meds at times and then driving.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Therefore, the answer is to get a driver.
- 2:26Speaker 4: No, I think the answer is to find a way
- 2:29Speaker 4: to deal with the addiction to the pain meds.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Right.
- 2:32Speaker 4: And then if you're saying to everybody, hey, look at me,
- 2:35Speaker 4: I got a driver, they're gonna be like, why is
- 2:39Speaker 4: your what is your? Is it a problem?
- 2:41Speaker 3: Is it an addiction? It's an addiction. Okay, let's settle
- 2:43Speaker 3: the addiction.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Right.
- 2:45Speaker 5: It seems to me playing armchair psychologists here, that always
- 2:49Speaker 5: has a very addictive personality. I'm sure that's how he
- 2:53Speaker 5: got so good at golf, because he became addicted to it.
- 2:55Speaker 5: Then he got addicted to the women. And now he's
- 2:59Speaker 5: trying to get back to his addiction of golf. And
- 3:01Speaker 5: the only way to do that is to get his
- 3:03Speaker 5: body feeling right. And guess what, after the amount of
- 3:05Speaker 5: injuries he has had, the way to do that is
- 3:08Speaker 5: to take pain meds for him, and he becomes and
- 3:11Speaker 5: those things are so addictive, and he just became addicted
- 3:14Speaker 5: to them, and it's it's a vicious circle. And until
- 3:19Speaker 5: he removes one of those things for us, it's easy.
- 3:22Speaker 5: It should be the golf. None of them are going
- 3:24Speaker 5: to get fixed.
- 3:25Speaker 1: No, but is he is?
- 3:26Speaker 3: Right?
- 3:26Speaker 2: Like for us to sit here and say, hey, get
- 3:28Speaker 2: a driver, what does that solve. He's still taking the
- 3:30Speaker 2: he's still taking the pain medication. He just has someone
- 3:34Speaker 2: driving him around town. The problem isn't Tiger driving. The
- 3:37Speaker 2: problem is the drugs.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Yeah, people want to dig so deep into this.
- 3:41Speaker 4: Those things are just wildly addictive, and so yeah, somebody
- 3:45Speaker 4: who it doesn't even matter if you have an addictive personality,
- 3:48Speaker 4: if you're using it for the pain meds, and then
- 3:50Speaker 4: all of a sudden it becomes something that your body
- 3:52Speaker 4: feels like it needs, that's going to tell you it
- 3:54Speaker 4: needs it more often.
- 3:55Speaker 5: Getting a driver is fixing the symptom, not the cause.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Well, no, it's not fixing anything.
- 4:00Speaker 2: It's just keeping him safe and everyone else safe when
- 4:03Speaker 2: he's on drugs and on and he's on the road,
- 4:05Speaker 2: you know, and that's and so you know, people.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Forget this about Tiger. Is he It's interesting?
- 4:11Speaker 2: This is a man whose body is in such bad condition.
- 4:13Speaker 2: He's in so much pain. I feel so badly for him. Okay, Well,
- 4:17Speaker 2: what people don't realize about Tiger and the training that
- 4:21Speaker 2: was involved with Tiger and Tiger becoming the greatest golfer
- 4:24Speaker 2: that's ever lived. He was working out military style. He
- 4:28Speaker 2: was doing things that green berets.
- 4:30Speaker 1: And marines, he was working out with them.
- 4:32Speaker 2: He was doing stuff you don't really need to do,
- 4:35Speaker 2: and his body is paying for it.
- 4:36Speaker 1: That combined with the golf, his body's paying for it.
- 4:39Speaker 1: And so what does he look for He looks for
- 4:41Speaker 1: a quick fix.
- 4:42Speaker 2: And why does he look for it Because it's easier
- 4:44Speaker 2: just to take a pill than to actually address the
- 4:47Speaker 2: actual issues. And why is he taking these pills? Because
- 4:50Speaker 2: he is, as Mikey pointed out, addicted to winning golf
- 4:53Speaker 2: tournaments and still thinks in.
- 4:54Speaker 1: His mind, I got one more run at Augustine.
- 4:57Speaker 4: But even that, like even that that you just put
- 4:59Speaker 4: together is just getting into Tiger's head and thinking for him, right,
- 5:03Speaker 4: what this is?
- 5:04Speaker 3: Possibly why I'm doing it? Could just be as simple
- 5:06Speaker 3: as this is just life.
- 5:08Speaker 4: This is what's involved in his life in golf, and
- 5:10Speaker 4: his addiction is part of that. And he's just living, right,
- 5:15Speaker 4: He's just doing whatever you're saying. He's doing golf because
- 5:18Speaker 4: people want to see him, and he thinks that that
- 5:20Speaker 4: might not be the case. It might just be the
- 5:21Speaker 4: case because that's what he does on the day to day.
- 5:23Speaker 4: He just also happens to be on these payments.
- 5:27Speaker 2: This is why we have is he because he thinks
- 5:29Speaker 2: differently and hething's like a normal person.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Because he's right.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Unless you've been in that daily type of pain and
- 5:34Speaker 2: my mom was, you will search far and wide for
- 5:37Speaker 2: anything to make that pain go away. And it could
- 5:40Speaker 2: be as simple as, hey, my fucking body hurts, and
- 5:42Speaker 2: these pills, man, they make it go away, and they
- 5:45Speaker 2: make it go away quickly.
- 5:46Speaker 3: It's a quick fix.
- 5:47Speaker 1: That's all it is, you know.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Yeah, the idea, You're right right, It could just be
- 5:50Speaker 2: as simple as this isn't about golf. This isn't about
- 5:54Speaker 2: I started taking something. I went down a path, my
- 5:56Speaker 2: body was hurting. I started, like many football players, order
- 6:00Speaker 2: taking this. This made it go away quickly, and I
- 6:02Speaker 2: can't stop taking it.
- 6:04Speaker 4: Yeah, people think that maybe because he's such a successful
- 6:06Speaker 4: athlete and has sort of access to anything that he wants,
- 6:10Speaker 4: like he's all super well adjusted as a human being.
- 6:12Speaker 4: We have no idea what he's like as a human being. Obviously,
- 6:15Speaker 4: he's had problems within his family, so if you really
- 6:18Speaker 4: dig in there, it's like maybe there's just issues within
- 6:21Speaker 4: tiger woods that we don't know about, of course, and
- 6:23Speaker 4: so yeah, I think it's it's it's sad, it's it's tough.
- 6:27Speaker 1: To look at.
- 6:27Speaker 4: It's good that he is getting some sort of help
- 6:30Speaker 4: when this is all I say all this. Last time,
- 6:35Speaker 4: there was no serious serious incident out you know, the rollover,
- 6:38Speaker 4: Nobody was seriously injured. In comparison or complete contrasts to
- 6:43Speaker 4: and Mikey, last night I watched the lamar odomdock, the
- 6:45Speaker 4: untold one, and I had been like sort of lukewarm,
- 6:49Speaker 4: kind of cold actually on the on the untold ones
- 6:51Speaker 4: because of I don't know, that's just produced by the
- 6:54Speaker 4: people that are the subjects, and therefore they're not that
- 6:57Speaker 4: necessarily thorough and in detail. But this one was really good.
- 7:02Speaker 4: Lamar was in it, Chloe Kardashian was in it, and
- 7:05Speaker 4: man like the level of addictive personality that lamar Odom
- 7:11Speaker 4: had and the way he kept just raising the stakes
- 7:15Speaker 4: and like just going on benders and like it was
- 7:18Speaker 4: all he knew and literally put his life at stake
- 7:20Speaker 4: and was like dead for three days. Like that is
- 7:24Speaker 4: just house quickly sort of a slippery slope an athlete
- 7:29Speaker 4: can take if he didn't have like a home base,
- 7:33Speaker 4: like Lamar had just so much going on in his
- 7:35Speaker 4: life and so much bad stuff, like his mother dying.
- 7:38Speaker 4: He had one of his son's died of SIDS, you know,
- 7:41Speaker 4: in twenty sixteen, and so like all that pressure and
- 7:44Speaker 4: all that stuff just led into him being this complete addict.
- 7:47Speaker 4: And there's an image of his father in there, and
- 7:49Speaker 4: he was very similar to So I say all that
- 7:51Speaker 4: to say, you have no idea what's going on in
- 7:54Speaker 4: these people's lives, even somebody like Lamar who was in
- 7:56Speaker 4: a reality show and wide open about it. Yeah, just like, yeah,
- 7:59Speaker 4: you didn't think he would show up at a brothel,
- 8:01Speaker 4: you know, dying off of penis pills by.
- 8:05Speaker 1: The way, Yes, yeah, that's what it was.
- 8:07Speaker 4: He took twelve like sexual enhancers when it says right
- 8:10Speaker 4: on the thing, you're only supposed to take one, and
- 8:12Speaker 4: so within twenty four hours. So it's just it's wild
- 8:15Speaker 4: to think that you know, no matter what level of
- 8:18Speaker 4: athlete that we know and how much we think we
- 8:20Speaker 4: know them, they're just like us in some respect.
- 8:23Speaker 1: I have said that for basically my entire career. We
- 8:26Speaker 1: don't know these people.
- 8:27Speaker 2: We like to think that we know these people you
- 8:29Speaker 2: have a little embraced with a guy at a golf
- 8:31Speaker 2: tournament and you think he's your best friend. You don't
- 8:33Speaker 2: know what the fuck's going on in his private life.
- 8:35Speaker 2: No one does, none of us too, and they don't
- 8:36Speaker 2: want you to know. And so that's interesting, is ye.
- 8:39Speaker 2: So the Autumn documentary was good? Huh, it's it's very good.
- 8:43Speaker 2: A lot of things I didn't know. Chloe was very,
- 8:46Speaker 2: very just open about it. There was some images of
- 8:50Speaker 2: after his coma where they're showing her showing him pictures
- 8:56Speaker 2: and asking if he knows who this person is they're
- 8:58Speaker 2: showing him, you know, basically as if he went through
- 9:01Speaker 2: I think he said something the equivalent of like twelve
- 9:03Speaker 2: strokes and six heart.
- 9:05Speaker 4: Attacks, which I don't know about. You sort of figure
- 9:07Speaker 4: that out. But he definitely had to learn how to
- 9:10Speaker 4: do everything again. And the fact that he is in
- 9:12Speaker 4: this doc speaking the way he is, moving the way
- 9:15Speaker 4: he is, it's crazy that he's recovered to this level.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Why he's speaking well, he's looking well, is what you're saying.
- 9:21Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, unless they're high to get, you know,
- 9:23Speaker 4: particularly on their likes on a lot of clothes or whatever,
- 9:25Speaker 4: talking well seems sharp.
- 9:27Speaker 3: You know, moving around seems normal.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Is he?
- 9:30Speaker 2: Are you mad at us as a show because you
- 9:33Speaker 2: want to talk basketball all the time and we never do.
- 9:36Speaker 2: And yet March, all we've done is talk college basketball.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Thinking about this last night, is he? Are you outraged
- 9:44Speaker 1: with us? David?
- 9:46Speaker 4: So, yeah, no, my time is coming. It's okay the
- 9:48Speaker 4: NBA playoffs. College basketball can't last forever.
- 9:52Speaker 3: Neither can the NFL.
- 9:53Speaker 2: In the interest of fairness, you realize we did talk
- 9:55Speaker 2: college basketball during the regular season. It took the postseason
- 9:58Speaker 2: for us to start talking about college basket.
- 10:00Speaker 1: But we're getting to it.
- 10:01Speaker 3: And that's the beauty of the NBA postseason. It lasts forever.
- 10:07Speaker 1: And when I say we're getting to it, I mean
- 10:08Speaker 1: we'll get to it.
- 10:09Speaker 3: Conference Finals, yeah, maybe maybe Game six.

- 12:10Speaker 2: This man is college basketball. I'm a big fan of
- 12:12Speaker 2: his work. He is Seth Davis. Seth, thank you for
- 12:15Speaker 2: joining us. We appreciated. Taylor has a take, our executive
- 12:18Speaker 2: producer a college sports related take that has gone viral
- 12:22Speaker 2: today and I want to get your thoughts on it.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Taylor take it away.
- 12:25Speaker 8: Yeah, I wish we didn't do this for Seth Davis
- 12:27Speaker 8: because the whole thing is be kind and this is
- 12:31Speaker 8: kind of going against the whole be kind notion. Yeah,
- 12:33Speaker 8: but Seth, my take was, if your favorite college football
- 12:36Speaker 8: team is different from your favorite college basketball team, nobody
- 12:40Speaker 8: respects you.
- 12:43Speaker 7: I think that is a very kind thing to say.
- 12:46Speaker 9: I think calling people out for their hypocrisy is an
- 12:49Speaker 9: act of kindness.
- 12:50Speaker 7: I am right with you, right with you.
- 12:54Speaker 2: How anyway, Seth how do we view Dan Hurley if
- 13:00Speaker 2: he goes on to win a national championship, his third
- 13:03Speaker 2: national championship, where does he kind of fall in the
- 13:06Speaker 2: pecking order of all time great coaches? Because that ties
- 13:09Speaker 2: in with Jim Calhoun puts them two behind coach K.
- 13:14Speaker 9: Short list of three or more. Right, there's Calhoun, there's k,
- 13:19Speaker 9: and there's Woulden. I think Night only had two, right, yes,
- 13:24Speaker 9: so yeah, there's that's one way to That's one way
- 13:29Speaker 9: to measure greatness. I mean, you know, this was not
- 13:32Speaker 9: a team that I really expected to get to the
- 13:34Speaker 9: final four. You know, they had kind of an up
- 13:37Speaker 9: and down year, but you know a lot of these
- 13:39Speaker 9: teams had an up and down year. They showed an
- 13:41Speaker 9: incredible fight in that game against Duke. They just never
- 13:44Speaker 9: gave up. Uh and his ability to impart his personality
- 13:49Speaker 9: onto his team. It's not like automatic, you know, so
- 13:53Speaker 9: super impressive, he brings he checks every box. You know,
- 13:58Speaker 9: people call him polarizing or they don't like a sideline antics.
- 14:01Speaker 9: I mean, there's so many phonies in this world. Like
- 14:05Speaker 9: we always say we want people to be honest. We
- 14:08Speaker 9: always say we want people to be authentic, and then
- 14:10Speaker 9: when they are, we shred them for it. Hopefully you're
- 14:13Speaker 9: not following this ridiculousness of him putting his forehead on
- 14:19Speaker 9: the referee.
- 14:19Speaker 7: Roger Airs chatted about it.
- 14:24Speaker 9: You have with great kindness, and I'm sure it doesn't
- 14:29Speaker 9: require kindness, it just requires facts.
- 14:32Speaker 7: The facts are the rule says that you.
- 14:35Speaker 9: Are not allowed to contact have contact with an official
- 14:38Speaker 9: in a way that is meant to intimidate or that
- 14:42Speaker 9: is disrespectful. Those are rules that are that are in
- 14:44Speaker 9: the books. He did that right when Braylan Mullins hit
- 14:47Speaker 9: the shot at a crazy moment, right trying to intimidate.
- 14:51Speaker 7: The ref What is wrong with people?
- 14:54Speaker 3: It's not like it's just like what is wrong with people?
- 14:57Speaker 3: It's just something we've never seen. So it was just
- 14:58Speaker 3: fun too.
- 14:59Speaker 2: I mean, just point there are different types of head butts.
- 15:01Speaker 2: There's a friendly headbutt and there's a head butt that's
- 15:04Speaker 2: intending to hurt you.
- 15:06Speaker 9: Is he is he like context matters? Is he trying
- 15:09Speaker 9: to intimidate the ref? Is there anybody on this zoom
- 15:13Speaker 9: that that wants to argue that in that moment he's
- 15:16Speaker 9: trying to intimidate the official?
- 15:17Speaker 7: But that's what happened. At worst, it was what was anybody.
- 15:21Speaker 3: Could speak up.
- 15:22Speaker 7: What was Dan Hurley's motivation at that moment?
- 15:26Speaker 2: Not to get a technical, that's for sure, I can
- 15:28Speaker 2: tell you that much his motivation.
- 15:30Speaker 7: Why did he do it?
- 15:31Speaker 1: He wanted to do it. He was celebrating with the
- 15:32Speaker 1: guy that.
- 15:33Speaker 7: Was closest to him, but he excited.
- 15:37Speaker 3: He said that.
- 15:37Speaker 4: Actually looked to me like he has a decent relationship
- 15:40Speaker 4: with that referee, so he knows he can do that.
- 15:43Speaker 4: In that moment, thank you, Yeah is thank you.
- 15:46Speaker 9: And then you know, like I said, you know this
- 15:47Speaker 9: to me looked like to buddy like Roger Air, like
- 15:50Speaker 9: that's what good officials do.
- 15:51Speaker 7: You know.
- 15:52Speaker 9: There was a game probably about a month ago, maybe
- 15:55Speaker 9: three weeks ago, I'll say a month ago, and Houston
- 15:59Speaker 9: was playing a game and there was a really bad
- 16:02Speaker 9: call that went against Houston and there was a ref
- 16:05Speaker 9: who was standing right in front of Kelvin Samson, and
- 16:08Speaker 9: Kelvin was losing his mind and really giving it to
- 16:12Speaker 9: the ref, and the ref stood there and let him
- 16:14Speaker 9: do it, and then he moved on like that's what
- 16:17Speaker 9: officiating is supposed to be. Anyway, I didn't mean to
- 16:19Speaker 9: get on. I don't mean to hijack the show I'm
- 16:21Speaker 9: your guest, Please ask your question.
- 16:22Speaker 2: But I think the friendly headbot may have cost the
- 16:24Speaker 2: referee a spot in the Final four, because.
- 16:27Speaker 7: Bullshits, that's not true. It's not true.
- 16:31Speaker 9: He did exactly what he was supposed to do in
- 16:34Speaker 9: that situation.
- 16:36Speaker 1: But he's really yes, but he's not refereeing in the
- 16:38Speaker 1: Final four.
- 16:39Speaker 9: I mean, oh, so he must be a terrible ref
- 16:42Speaker 9: because only only terrible refs don't ref in the Final four.
- 16:46Speaker 9: Like there's there's nine refs who are going to be
- 16:48Speaker 9: working this weekend. Nine Okay, by the way, if he's
- 16:52Speaker 9: such a terrible ref, why is he working the Elite
- 16:54Speaker 9: eight right?
- 16:55Speaker 3: And the marquee game of the Elite eight?
- 16:57Speaker 9: Why did he ref He probably both do Carolina games.
- 17:01Speaker 9: I know he's primarily an agency Roger ayres Is refereed
- 17:05Speaker 9: a lot of Final fours. If you think that's the
- 17:07Speaker 9: reason why he's not reving the Final four, I can't
- 17:08Speaker 9: help you.
- 17:09Speaker 7: And I say that with all do.
- 17:10Speaker 3: Kindness, Seth.
- 17:12Speaker 8: What do you make of the Carolina head coaching search
- 17:15Speaker 8: where it seems like they've gotten to the point their
- 17:18Speaker 8: contempt waiting for Dusty May Tommy Lloyd and just gonna
- 17:23Speaker 8: let that kind of play out and see if either
- 17:25Speaker 8: of those coaches tell them no.
- 17:27Speaker 7: Well, part of what's.
- 17:28Speaker 9: Going on is they moved back the opening day of
- 17:32Speaker 9: the transfer portal last year, and previously it started the
- 17:37Speaker 9: Monday of Sweet sixteen week. So if you were coaching
- 17:41Speaker 9: in the Sweet sixteen, you had to be in the
- 17:43Speaker 9: transfer portal, recruiting out of the transfer portal. And so
- 17:47Speaker 9: also if you are looking for a coach, you know
- 17:51Speaker 9: you're taking a risk by not having a coach during
- 17:54Speaker 9: the first two weeks of the transfer portal. So the
- 17:56Speaker 9: fact that it doesn't start open until April seventh, and
- 17:59Speaker 9: by the way, you know what else happens in early April.
- 18:02Speaker 7: Is the NBA season ends.
- 18:04Speaker 9: And so now you can have that conversation with Billy Donovan, who,
- 18:07Speaker 9: from his public comments, has not closed the door. I've
- 18:11Speaker 9: seen some reporting that Brad Stevens has privately closed the door.
- 18:16Speaker 7: I'll still believe that when I see it.
- 18:17Speaker 9: Now, the Celtics are in second place in the East
- 18:19Speaker 9: and the Bulls aren't going to the playoffs, and there's
- 18:21Speaker 9: chatt of that maybe Billy Donovan leaves anyway.
- 18:23Speaker 7: So look, as.
- 18:24Speaker 9: North Carolina you want to you got to have that conversation.
- 18:27Speaker 9: The problem becomes the math on these buyouts. I think
- 18:31Speaker 9: Tommy Lloyd's buyout at Arizona is like eleven million dollars.
- 18:36Speaker 9: So you've got to pay Hubert Davis five million dollars
- 18:38Speaker 9: to buy him out. Now you've got to pay Tommy
- 18:41Speaker 9: Lloyd's buy out eleven million dollars. That's before you've paid
- 18:45Speaker 9: him a penny and salary. And you know, he's got
- 18:47Speaker 9: to be pretty much, if not the highest paid coach
- 18:50Speaker 9: in the sport, certainly close to it. And then, by
- 18:53Speaker 9: the way, you've got to come up with you know,
- 18:56Speaker 9: probably eight figures for your roster, So that's a lot
- 19:00Speaker 9: of money. I think that's much more of an issue
- 19:04Speaker 9: than anything else for them moving forward. That's that's probably
- 19:06Speaker 9: why they probably end up, you know, aside for Billy Donovan.
- 19:10Speaker 9: Obviously there's no buyout of that situation, right, you probably
- 19:13Speaker 9: end up with. If I had to give you a name,
- 19:15Speaker 9: I would say Mark Byington from Vanderbilt, who's a really
- 19:17Speaker 9: good coach. I think you do a really good job.
- 19:20Speaker 9: But if you're a Carolina fan, like, does that like
- 19:22Speaker 9: light your world on fire? Probably should, but it probably doesn't.
- 19:26Speaker 4: Seth going into this tournament, a lot of people were
- 19:28Speaker 4: looking at some of the bigger named players, the Darren Peterson's,
- 19:32Speaker 4: the cam Boozers, Ag Debonta see how they would perform.
- 19:34Speaker 4: But of the teams that are remaining, is there a
- 19:37Speaker 4: player that has shown the best for him in these
- 19:40Speaker 4: first four games? Because I love every time I watched
- 19:43Speaker 4: Lindenberg play for Michigan. I'm like, that guy looks like
- 19:47Speaker 4: he is everything the NBA wants everything.
- 19:50Speaker 9: That's exactly where I was going to go, is bro Is.
- 19:53Speaker 9: It is an interesting story too, because he was a
- 19:56Speaker 9: late bloomer and kind of not a whole lot of
- 19:58Speaker 9: direction when he was younger. How about this, he played
- 20:01Speaker 9: eleven varsity games in high school. Think about that for
- 20:04Speaker 9: a second. Eleven varsity games in high school. He's bounced around,
- 20:08Speaker 9: went to a ton of different schools, then had this
- 20:10Speaker 9: great season at UAB, and now he's probably making two
- 20:14Speaker 9: million a year in IL money for Michigan. He's the
- 20:17Speaker 9: best player in the final four, probably gonna end up
- 20:19Speaker 9: be if I had to guess your most outstanding player,
- 20:22Speaker 9: because I think Michigan's gonna win the thing. And if
- 20:24Speaker 9: they do, that means he's been great and he'll be
- 20:27Speaker 9: a lottery pick in the NBA.
- 20:28Speaker 7: So ain't that America.
- 20:30Speaker 9: I mean, good on him, Great on Dusty for the
- 20:32Speaker 9: way that he's made you know, I like a name
- 20:34Speaker 9: drop you see behind me the hoopstahe Q. We talked
- 20:36Speaker 9: to Andy Katz and I interviewed Dusty May this morning
- 20:39Speaker 9: for a hoopshe Q show. Nice and I asked Dusty
- 20:43Speaker 9: about see, as someone like me, I've studying leadership and
- 20:48Speaker 9: team building and team ethos and all of that, it's
- 20:52Speaker 9: such a fascinating time, like why did this roster work?
- 20:55Speaker 7: And that one didn't? You know?
- 20:56Speaker 9: And there's there's almost not always a great answer, and
- 21:00Speaker 9: I Dusty's now two for two.
- 21:01Speaker 7: It's two years in a row.
- 21:02Speaker 9: He's basically had to turn over his entire roster, most
- 21:05Speaker 9: of it, and it's really really worked. And so I
- 21:09Speaker 9: asked him that question and he talked about like how
- 21:12Speaker 9: everybody shares the ball and getting everybody involved, and he said,
- 21:15Speaker 9: you know, we could call more plays for yoxall and
- 21:18Speaker 9: probably score more from yoxall, but we we intentionally design
- 21:25Speaker 9: our offense so everybody's involved and everybody scores and everybody
- 21:30Speaker 9: touches the ball.
- 21:30Speaker 7: So it really is like in.
- 21:31Speaker 9: Every second, everyday decision as far as making that go.
- 21:36Speaker 9: But the most important piece is that you're a great player.
- 21:39Speaker 9: Has to buy into that, and you can just tell
- 21:41Speaker 9: the body line. I don't know if you guys have
- 21:42Speaker 9: seen like the little post game things they do, like
- 21:45Speaker 9: Maurice Johnson stands behind them, like like the guard at
- 21:49Speaker 9: Buckingham Palace who's not allowed to smile, right, he does
- 21:51Speaker 9: that and towels and they just look like they're having
- 21:54Speaker 9: a good time and they really get winning, winning by
- 21:57Speaker 9: thirty in the fun, breaking breaking news.
- 22:00Speaker 4: I'm glad you said you think Michigan's gonna win it
- 22:03Speaker 4: because obviously they play Arizona. Stucatts and I were under
- 22:05Speaker 4: the impression that Arizona might be the greatest basketball team
- 22:08Speaker 4: that's ever played. But that's only because we've only seen
- 22:11Speaker 4: them play once, and that within the Sweet sixteen.
- 22:12Speaker 2: In fairness, it was the morning after the Sweet sixteen game,
- 22:15Speaker 2: and it's the first time both of us watched in
- 22:17Speaker 2: the entire season.
- 22:19Speaker 9: You mean you don't living, You're not immersed in this
- 22:22Speaker 9: sport twelve months a year, like the nerd that you're talking, Well,
- 22:26Speaker 9: you know, so what? But then I assume you watched
- 22:29Speaker 9: Michigan against Tennessee.
- 22:31Speaker 3: Yes, yes, yes, fair.
- 22:34Speaker 7: All to your opinion of the greatest teams in the
- 22:36Speaker 7: history of college basketball.
- 22:37Speaker 3: Michigan second place.
- 22:38Speaker 7: Yeah, I don't know.
- 22:39Speaker 2: Oh still second, I think those two teams played ten
- 22:41Speaker 2: times each wins five.
- 22:42Speaker 1: How about that?
- 22:43Speaker 7: Uh yeah, that's that's that's fair.
- 22:46Speaker 9: Well, here's what I would say, and I'm somebody I
- 22:48Speaker 9: pick Arizona at the start of the tournament.
- 22:52Speaker 7: You know, my second Kelvin Sampson reference.
- 22:54Speaker 9: Forgive me, but he's got this great expression I quote
- 22:56Speaker 9: a lot when he's talking about players. He'll say, you
- 22:59Speaker 9: know that kid, he can get to that top shelf
- 23:01Speaker 9: in the pantry.
- 23:02Speaker 7: You know.
- 23:03Speaker 9: And I feel like Michigan can get to a shelf
- 23:06Speaker 9: in the pantry that the other three can't get to.
- 23:08Speaker 9: Like peak, Michigan is super scary. I was in San
- 23:14Speaker 9: Jose covering the West Regional, so I did see Arizona
- 23:17Speaker 9: in person twice. I saw them in person at the
- 23:22Speaker 9: beginning of the season when they played in Las Vegas.
- 23:26Speaker 9: And there's a lot to like there. I mean, they're
- 23:28Speaker 9: just so physically. The thing about Arizona is they physically
- 23:31Speaker 9: wear teams out. They crush you in the paint and
- 23:34Speaker 9: they crush you on the offensive glass. They're one of
- 23:36Speaker 9: those rare teams who actually shoots a pretty good percentage
- 23:39Speaker 9: from three. They have good three point shooters on their team.
- 23:43Speaker 9: But there's only two teams in the whole country that
- 23:47Speaker 9: this season shot three pointers at a lower rate than Arizona.
- 23:51Speaker 9: So a lot of times you see the opposite, like
- 23:53Speaker 9: you see a team that shoots a high volume of threes,
- 23:55Speaker 9: but maybe not a great percentage. So like Alabama, they're
- 24:00Speaker 9: gonna shoot their thirty five threes. If they go in,
- 24:02Speaker 9: they're gonna beat you. They don't go into Arizona wants
- 24:04Speaker 9: to really beat in the paint.
- 24:06Speaker 7: I don't think that's gonna work. With Michigan, they're so
- 24:08Speaker 7: big up front.
- 24:09Speaker 9: They got, you know, Ade Mara is seven foot three,
- 24:12Speaker 9: whereas Johnson is six foot.
- 24:14Speaker 7: Ten and super strong.
- 24:15Speaker 9: And then you got Yoxel at the three, who is
- 24:19Speaker 9: a six nine and loves to play defense, loves the
- 24:22Speaker 9: challenge up so you figure he matches up with Coopete,
- 24:26Speaker 9: it's gonna be it's gonna be great.
- 24:28Speaker 7: How about this final four?
- 24:29Speaker 9: Man?
- 24:29Speaker 7: I know so good? Yeah, And I know everyone's heartbroken about.
- 24:33Speaker 3: That, right I love it.
- 24:34Speaker 1: Well, we got Yukon, who cares, I mean.
- 24:37Speaker 3: Illinois my favorite?
- 24:37Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, settle for Yukon, yeah, and you know, and Illinois.
- 24:44Speaker 9: So it's it's a great, great, great, great final. College
- 24:46Speaker 9: basketball is very blessed with these fourteen.
- 24:48Speaker 2: It's been a great tournament. It's gonna be a great
- 24:50Speaker 2: final four. But Illinois is the team I feel badly for.
- 24:52Speaker 2: We're not gonna talk about them. We're not gonna talk
- 24:54Speaker 2: about their coach. We're gonna talk about the other three schools.
- 24:56Speaker 2: Jay Billis told us last week there's a big difference
- 24:58Speaker 2: of being able to make it to the Final four
- 25:01Speaker 2: and winning a national championship. So I ask you this,
- 25:03Speaker 2: can Illinois win the national championship?
- 25:06Speaker 7: Well, they certainly can't, don't.
- 25:08Speaker 9: I mean, don't fool yourself, but they'll They're the least
- 25:12Speaker 9: likely two of the four. They're playing well though, you know,
- 25:16Speaker 9: I mean, part of what happens is, you know what,
- 25:20Speaker 9: obviously you have to be good to get to a
- 25:22Speaker 9: final four or even a Sweet sixteen or second round
- 25:25Speaker 9: in the tournament.
- 25:26Speaker 7: Like those teams aren't just good teams.
- 25:28Speaker 9: They're playing well, and oftentimes what happens like with Illinois,
- 25:33Speaker 9: like a lot of teams.
- 25:34Speaker 3: They went through some ups and downs because of injuries.
- 25:36Speaker 7: You know, they had a lot of.
- 25:37Speaker 9: Stuff going on in the preseason, Like Andrea Stojakovich basically
- 25:40Speaker 9: didn't have a summer. First time he practiced with the
- 25:43Speaker 9: team was like right before their first game. Takes him
- 25:46Speaker 9: a while to get into it. Then they had some
- 25:47Speaker 9: guys shuffle in and out, and then Kylen Boswell injures
- 25:51Speaker 9: his hand and he's out for three weeks. So Keith
- 25:53Speaker 9: Woggler becomes a huge usage guy. He goes he scored
- 25:56Speaker 9: over forty one game and he was going nuts. Now
- 25:59Speaker 9: Boswell comes back and you got to kind of go
- 26:01Speaker 9: through that again. So that's why they kind of lose games.
- 26:04Speaker 9: And people are like, well, they're not as good based
- 26:06Speaker 9: on their season, but there's reasons inside the season.
- 26:08Speaker 7: They're healthy.
- 26:09Speaker 9: Now I mean they beat I mean they to defend
- 26:13Speaker 9: Houston and match Houston's defensive toughness the way they did.
- 26:17Speaker 7: And then the same thing with Iowa. Now Iowa, you know,
- 26:20Speaker 7: they were playing well.
- 26:21Speaker 9: Physically physically matched up with Florida, which has the best
- 26:25Speaker 9: front court in the country, which was really not what
- 26:27Speaker 9: they had done over the season.
- 26:29Speaker 7: So they were riding high.
- 26:30Speaker 9: So for Illinois to go through Houston and Iowa to
- 26:33Speaker 9: get to the final four, I mean they can win
- 26:36Speaker 9: this thing. But I would, I would, I would probably.
- 26:40Speaker 9: I might put them third ahead of Yukon.
- 26:41Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 26:42Speaker 9: That's close. That's close. Remember Yukon was down nineteen and
- 26:46Speaker 9: Yukon has has lost.
- 26:47Speaker 7: I mean Yukon.
- 26:48Speaker 9: Yukon two weeks ago lost by twenty to Saint John's.
- 26:51Speaker 2: I know, right, So second time they lost to Saint
- 26:54Speaker 2: John's too, right, Yeah, yeah.
- 26:56Speaker 9: I don't know how many how many picks I have
- 26:58Speaker 9: to get wrong before people stop as gonna do what
- 27:00Speaker 9: think's gonna win?
- 27:01Speaker 7: I got I got three to I got three to go.
- 27:03Speaker 1: Yeah, but that's what march is all about. You know that?
- 27:05Speaker 7: Go ahead, Taylor. Final question, so.
- 27:07Speaker 8: What do you make of the Will Wade situation at
- 27:10Speaker 8: NC State in LSU because it feels like a lot
- 27:13Speaker 8: of NC State fans are surprised that Will Wade will
- 27:16Speaker 8: waded them.
- 27:19Speaker 7: That's a phenomenal way you could use it.
- 27:22Speaker 9: Feel free, it's yours. Yes, So I have not fully
- 27:28Speaker 9: done the reporting on this. I will be frank and
- 27:30Speaker 9: I haven't. I have not talked to Will about it
- 27:33Speaker 9: based on the comments from buch Corrigan, who's I know
- 27:37Speaker 9: a long time dad was the longtime commission of the
- 27:39Speaker 9: a CEC. I have a very wide latitude for people
- 27:45Speaker 9: who need to do what's in their best interest, right,
- 27:50Speaker 9: Like you know, Ben McCollum was the head coach at
- 27:52Speaker 9: Drake for one year and got an opportunity to go
- 27:55Speaker 9: to Iowa and did that.
- 27:59Speaker 7: Brad Underwood's coaching final four.
- 28:00Speaker 9: He was the head coach at Oklahoma State for one year,
- 28:03Speaker 9: left to go to Illinois. So I don't necessarily have
- 28:07Speaker 9: a problem with that. That's its business and they got
- 28:10Speaker 9: to do its best. From everything that I've heard, Will
- 28:13Speaker 9: Wade was so deceptive about the situation, according to Buchorygan
- 28:18Speaker 9: again public comments. He went right to Will and said
- 28:22Speaker 9: is First of all, Will Wade was asked about this
- 28:24Speaker 9: at a press conference. I don't know if it was
- 28:25Speaker 9: after the ACC or after.
- 28:27Speaker 7: The NCAA tournament. When it ended.
- 28:29Speaker 9: A reporter said, there's some chatter about LSU and Will
- 28:32Speaker 9: Wade stabbed. He said, well, they have a coach there, right,
- 28:34Speaker 9: is it open?
- 28:35Speaker 3: Okay?
- 28:36Speaker 9: So he was very condescending to the reporter. And it
- 28:40Speaker 9: was a good question because the athletic director who hired
- 28:42Speaker 9: him at McNeese is now at LSU as like a
- 28:45Speaker 9: senior associate AD and there's someone in the administration same
- 28:49Speaker 9: thing coming from mcneiss. It was a good and the
- 28:51Speaker 9: fact that they were about to get rid of McMahon
- 28:53Speaker 9: was pretty well known. And so according to Buchor, again
- 28:56Speaker 9: he goes to will Wade and is there something to this?
- 28:58Speaker 9: And will Wade swears to him there's no and they
- 29:00Speaker 9: try to have these conversations and Blue Corgan found out
- 29:05Speaker 9: about it from an email from will Waite's agent. If
- 29:09Speaker 9: you're not man enough to pick up the telephone and
- 29:12Speaker 9: call Bouk Corrigan and say, here's what's going on. Here's
- 29:16Speaker 9: what I'm doing. I know, I'm sorry you're disappointed, but
- 29:19Speaker 9: here's what I'm doing. Here's why to have that courtesy.
- 29:24Speaker 9: It's just bad. But that's you know again, I mean,
- 29:27Speaker 9: this is kind of who's been and he embraces the
- 29:29Speaker 9: whole villain black hat thing like, oh, I invented an il.
- 29:32Speaker 7: Like so yeah, it's wrong, it's wrong to do it.
- 29:38Speaker 7: It's like when Lane Kiffin.
- 29:40Speaker 9: To leave a team an old myth that has a
- 29:43Speaker 9: chance that you're in the playoff like there's certain things
- 29:46Speaker 9: you just don't do, but those guys got to live
- 29:48Speaker 9: with it.
- 29:48Speaker 7: What can I tell you, Seth Davis, We appreciate the time.
- 29:51Speaker 1: It's gonna be a great Final four.
- 29:52Speaker 7: I know it's a busy time for you.
- 29:53Speaker 1: Thank you for doing this, man.
- 29:55Speaker 7: I appreciate you guys enjoying the games.
- 29:56Speaker 1: All right, thank you, talk to you soon.
