- 0:42Speaker 1: Welcome to the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show, the longest
- 0:45Speaker 1: running weekly Philly sports podcast show in the world. Eric
- 0:49Speaker 1: and I are both looking at our screens right now
- 0:51Speaker 1: because the Philadelphia Flyers have advanced to the second round
- 0:56Speaker 1: of the Stanley Cup playoffs, like just just got done.
- 1:01Speaker 1: We're recording this Wednesday night on August twenty August April
- 1:05Speaker 1: twenty ninth. Dear god, I don't even know what you
- 1:07Speaker 1: know what I'm freaking, Oh my gosh, what month it is.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Dan Bladar just an amazing, amazing goalie that the Flyers
- 1:15Speaker 1: need to sign sooner rather than later to a long
- 1:17Speaker 1: term deal. Anyway, I'm Jeff Warren. We're like out of
- 1:20Speaker 1: our minds right now because the Flyers actually advanced to
- 1:23Speaker 1: the second round. Here I'm with my buddy Eric Leonard.
- 1:26Speaker 1: And if you're watching on YouTube better known as edgecomb Stand,
- 1:29Speaker 1: he's got his Flyers to his shirt on. He's into it, folks.
- 1:32Speaker 1: He's hand to the Flyers, but it's actually worth purchasing.
- 1:37Speaker 2: They're fun, yes, and they're young, and it's just a
- 1:40Speaker 2: perfect combo of like veterans and young guys and uh
- 1:45Speaker 2: my god, what a fun series. I mean, you talk
- 1:48Speaker 2: about Fladar. I mean, they obviously don't win tonight without
- 1:51Speaker 2: him because of me. You watch the overtime for what
- 1:54Speaker 2: fourteen minutes? Yea, and from the puck and uh Ladar
- 1:59Speaker 2: was standing on his head.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Jeff, he was standing on his head in front of
- 2:02Speaker 1: the net? Folks, What is that? What I mean, like,
- 2:06Speaker 1: where's that? I actually don't know where it comes from.
- 2:08Speaker 1: I should, I don't know where it comes from.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Was there some weird Canadian guys like in the fifties
- 2:15Speaker 2: or something and like.
- 2:16Speaker 1: That, maybe some circus act. He's like, yeah, I don't
- 2:20Speaker 1: razzle dazzle. You know, we're gonna get in front of
- 2:21Speaker 1: the net, but on our head.
- 2:24Speaker 2: But yeah, he was tremendous, and they they got to
- 2:26Speaker 2: resign him. The fourth line was was awesome all night. Yeah,
- 2:30Speaker 2: Almar pointed out so to Scott Hartnell and just they
- 2:35Speaker 2: just kept plugging away and plugging away. And I sound
- 2:37Speaker 2: like a hockey interview right now, but it's literally what
- 2:39Speaker 2: they did. And I really thought Marton's all was gonna go.
- 2:45Speaker 2: I thought Martone shouted, man, like the goalie just dropped
- 2:48Speaker 2: the stick. Yes, it's amazing, but like what a win?
- 2:54Speaker 1: York Cam York got gotta say man getting it done
- 2:57Speaker 1: at the end of the day.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Well, and then also I can't remember who was right
- 3:03Speaker 2: who was running interference in front of the goalie for
- 3:06Speaker 2: for Cam York's shot really helped the goal go in.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Let fuck go in. But my god, what a what
- 3:13Speaker 2: a fun series. I know they're going to be heavy
- 3:16Speaker 2: underdogs against Carolina in the second round, but you know what,
- 3:21Speaker 2: no one thought this team was to make the playoffs.
- 3:23Speaker 2: It's just one of those like, let's just enjoy this
- 3:26Speaker 2: like they had to win tonight now I can. I
- 3:29Speaker 2: can breathe and enjoy this as.
- 3:30Speaker 1: A old head.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Newbie Flyers fan. There you go, very excited, very excited.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Can we just discuss quick and if Scott Hartnell's like
- 3:39Speaker 2: a filling guy for Brian Bouchet right for when he
- 3:44Speaker 2: does color analysts. What what's you know? I'm obsessed with
- 3:47Speaker 2: hair and hair dye. Yes, what's what's happening with Scott
- 3:52Speaker 2: Hartnell's head?
- 3:53Speaker 1: There's a lot of gel? I think, Okay, I don't
- 3:57Speaker 1: know if it's gel because I have been learning, even
- 3:59Speaker 1: with my very thinning hair, I try to get it
- 4:03Speaker 1: to look a little thicker than it actually is. And
- 4:08Speaker 1: are there are so many more products today than there
- 4:11Speaker 1: were even ten years ago to help in that regard.
- 4:14Speaker 1: I don't know if Hartnell's using a gel, a moose,
- 4:18Speaker 1: any type of sculpting cream. Perhaps are palm made. I
- 4:22Speaker 1: have no idea, but he's definitely using something that makes
- 4:26Speaker 1: him look like a doll, you know, like doll hair
- 4:29Speaker 1: in a way.
- 4:30Speaker 2: He looks like a muppet like. It's not there's no
- 4:35Speaker 2: fade going on at all.
- 4:37Speaker 1: It's just a bush on top of his head.
- 4:39Speaker 2: It reminds me of the Grandfather from the Christmas movie
- 4:42Speaker 2: The National This thing plopped on top of his head
- 4:47Speaker 2: and I was just obsessed with it whenever they showed him.
- 4:50Speaker 1: So we're gonna have a lot more Flyers talk this week. Folks.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Had to do some shuffling around with some guests. We
- 4:58Speaker 1: were going to have one of our good friends from
- 5:00Speaker 1: Broadstreet Hockey dot Com on the show this week, and
- 5:02Speaker 1: we're saying, you know what, h Flyers Game A six
- 5:06Speaker 1: is being played, We're not gonna be able to do it.
- 5:08Speaker 1: So we're gonna have a PST special coming your way,
- 5:11Speaker 1: likely this Friday. It's gonna be dropping it into the
- 5:14Speaker 1: podcast feed. We're certainly gonna have it on our YouTube
- 5:16Speaker 1: channel to talk about what's gonna be coming in the
- 5:19Speaker 1: second round with this Flyers team and what we can
- 5:22Speaker 1: possibly expect. As Eric said, it's gonna be a it's
- 5:24Speaker 1: gonna be a tough road ahead for sure. But this
- 5:26Speaker 1: week on the show, we Gotta, we Gotta, we got
- 5:29Speaker 1: some great topics to get into. Uh. Well, this first
- 5:32Speaker 1: one not necessarily so great because it deals with the
- 5:34Speaker 1: Philadelphia Phillies. They have fired Rob Thompson and unless you've
- 5:39Speaker 1: been living under a rock, you know that that happened.
- 5:41Speaker 1: We're gonna be giving our thoughts. Then we're gonna dive
- 5:44Speaker 1: into some NFL draft uh uh uh NFL, I should
- 5:48Speaker 1: say Eagles post draft talk. A lot of NFL draft
- 5:52Speaker 1: analysts gave the Eagles really high grades for their draft
- 5:55Speaker 1: picks this past week. Haven't seen to too much less
- 5:59Speaker 1: than an A minus. There's some bees out there, some
- 6:03Speaker 1: a couple B minuses that I've seen from some folks. Uh,
- 6:06Speaker 1: We're gonna get into the Eagles draft, and then we're
- 6:09Speaker 1: gonna be introducing a brand new segment here at the
- 6:11Speaker 1: Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show. Len doesn't even know about
- 6:15Speaker 1: this yet, but he will soon enough. It's called love
- 6:18Speaker 1: to see it, hate to see it. This is where
- 6:20Speaker 1: we can talk about anything the past week that we
- 6:22Speaker 1: absolutely love to see and vice versa, something that we
- 6:26Speaker 1: hated to see. Anything in the world doesn't have to
- 6:28Speaker 1: be sports related. It could be about anything. We're introducing
- 6:32Speaker 1: that segment as we're celebrating thirteen years here at the
- 6:36Speaker 1: PST Podcast Show. And then we're gonna get into some
- 6:38Speaker 1: Sixers in NBA talk. The NBA Draft lottery proposal was
- 6:44Speaker 1: unveiled today, we're gonna dive into that, and then the
- 6:47Speaker 1: Sixer Celtics series is still ongoing somehow. So from there,
- 6:51Speaker 1: what we're thrown down on the table. We've got our
- 6:53Speaker 1: good friend Sean Bernard from Fox Sports, Phillies, The Gambler,
- 6:55Speaker 1: and Draft Kings. He's gonna be joining us for thoughts
- 6:58Speaker 1: on the six er Cell series and how the talent
- 7:01Speaker 1: on the Sixers, how they've looked during the first round here,
- 7:05Speaker 1: and whether or not they're probably gonna get booted soon,
- 7:07Speaker 1: which is likely the case. So that being said, we're
- 7:11Speaker 1: going to get into all of that on the show. Eric,
- 7:14Speaker 1: Let's start really quick with the Phillies firing Rob Thompson.
- 7:19Speaker 1: We knew some shoe I guess had to drop, and
- 7:23Speaker 1: I was a little surprised it happen right now. I
- 7:25Speaker 1: was on our good friend of the show, John Stalness
- 7:28Speaker 1: his podcast, Hitting Season Podcasts last week. He invited me on.
- 7:31Speaker 1: We talked about it. I said, if we're still seeing
- 7:35Speaker 1: consistent lack of offense, lack of hitting, lack of doing
- 7:42Speaker 1: anything from an offensive perspective into the end of May,
- 7:45Speaker 1: then that's probably when they would have fired Topper. That
- 7:48Speaker 1: was my thoughts. And then wow, all of a sudden
- 7:49Speaker 1: this week it happened. I'm not surprised, but a part
- 7:54Speaker 1: of me is surprised as well, because I believe Rob
- 7:58Speaker 1: Thompson a good guy, a good but imperfect manager as well.
- 8:03Speaker 1: I mean, his platoon heavy lineups often infuriating. We've talked
- 8:08Speaker 1: about it a number of times on the show. He
- 8:11Speaker 1: made a number of questionable postseason decisions. From last year's
- 8:15Speaker 1: sacrifice bunt in Game two, I remember he used a
- 8:19Speaker 1: broken down Craig Kimbrel against Arizona to going all the
- 8:23Speaker 1: way back to Game six of the twenty twenty two
- 8:26Speaker 1: World Series, when he pulled Zach Wheeler a bit too early.
- 8:30Speaker 1: He managed a clubhouse full of really strong personalities as well,
- 8:35Speaker 1: but piled up a back to back Analyst championships along
- 8:39Speaker 1: the way here. And it kind of makes me sad
- 8:42Speaker 1: because he took over for a manager who absolutely stunk.
- 8:46Speaker 1: And I don't think Rob Thompson stunk as a manager,
- 8:48Speaker 1: and I think that he was just the fall guy,
- 8:51Speaker 1: and that's what happens in baseball sometimes. It was I
- 8:55Speaker 1: don't know, it was kind of I was kind of like,
- 8:56Speaker 1: oh man, this kind of stinks type of thing. But
- 8:59Speaker 1: a shoe had to drop.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Yeah, because I mean there's certain players I'd like to
- 9:04Speaker 2: fire bomb, and Stott are one and two probably Yeah,
- 9:08Speaker 2: but yeah, someone had to take the fall for this.
- 9:12Speaker 2: And I thought he'd at least make it till like
- 9:14Speaker 2: mid Maya, the way they were playing. But they decided
- 9:18Speaker 2: to make the change because I get it, because they,
- 9:22Speaker 2: let's face it, they look horrible, like just not ready,
- 9:27Speaker 2: terrible base run.
- 9:28Speaker 1: It's just all it's.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Just just all the all the side effects of probably
- 9:34Speaker 2: a manager who like overstayed is welcome. I don't know
- 9:37Speaker 2: if the I don't know if the locker room was
- 9:40Speaker 2: still listening to him, maybe they were starting to like
- 9:43Speaker 2: tarting to tune him out, and you know it just
- 9:46Speaker 2: go through the years, twenty twenty two to make the
- 9:49Speaker 2: World Series, twenty three they lose, twenty four they lose,
- 9:52Speaker 2: and it's just getting worse and worse. Yeah, And this
- 9:57Speaker 2: happens with managers, even really super super likable guys to
- 10:01Speaker 2: baseball teams that have heavy veteran presence, older team and
- 10:08Speaker 2: not a lot of young guys you know, from the
- 10:10Speaker 2: farm system have broke through, and it was just kind
- 10:13Speaker 2: of a boring team, I would say, and like because
- 10:20Speaker 2: of the salary and like in the marquee names on
- 10:22Speaker 2: the team, like it's always gonna be the manager that
- 10:25Speaker 2: goes yeah, you know now and now what do they
- 10:28Speaker 2: do next?
- 10:28Speaker 1: That's that's the interesting thing.
- 10:31Speaker 2: I read a bunch of stuff today that it's almost
- 10:33Speaker 2: inevitable they're going to hire Alex Korra, who was just
- 10:36Speaker 2: fired from the Red Sox, and like, is that a
- 10:39Speaker 2: good idea?
- 10:39Speaker 1: Exactly? It seems and it seems like from what's been
- 10:42Speaker 1: reported so far is that Dave Dombrowski won. He really
- 10:46Speaker 1: didn't take much accountability for his part in this, which
- 10:50Speaker 1: was kind of like pretty shitty because he's culpable with
- 10:54Speaker 1: where this team is at right now as well.
- 10:56Speaker 2: He owns the team, Like, what are you gonna do? Well,
- 10:58Speaker 2: I mean he's like the general man.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Yeah, but yeah, yeah, I mean he runs the team.
- 11:03Speaker 2: It's like he's not going to fire himself exactly exactly.
- 11:07Speaker 1: I mean, but it but his lack of accountabit. What
- 11:09Speaker 1: I mean is by saying you know what, you know,
- 11:12Speaker 1: we well, you know what, you're right, I mean, what's
- 11:14Speaker 1: what's he going to do? Say? You know, we ran
- 11:16Speaker 1: it back and uh uh it was the wrong decision. Yeah,
- 11:20Speaker 1: he's not going to say that he's not. But the
- 11:23Speaker 1: way that he handled this, I think behind the scenes
- 11:25Speaker 1: there's some questions there. I think.
- 11:27Speaker 2: Yeah, And if you go back and listen to our
- 11:29Speaker 2: the previous show of this podcast for the Phillies, you know,
- 11:33Speaker 2: like we were really banking on a lot of it
- 11:37Speaker 2: was banking on Stott and Bomb to like kind of
- 11:40Speaker 2: break through finally. Yeah, because I think we were kind of,
- 11:44Speaker 2: without saying it, kind of resigned to the fact that
- 11:46Speaker 2: like this team is older, yeah, and they're losing more
- 11:48Speaker 2: and more, like the they're not getting better. Yeah, And like.
- 11:55Speaker 1: I didn't like and I predicted what I didn't.
- 11:57Speaker 2: I didnt think they were went in the nlest, but
- 11:59Speaker 2: they win ninety games, make the playoffs, right, But like
- 12:03Speaker 2: I think I should have I should have. I should
- 12:06Speaker 2: have like nutted up and been like, I don't know,
- 12:09Speaker 2: you can bed a kid this year. I just I
- 12:11Speaker 2: didn't like the Lozardo signing. I thought that was too quick.
- 12:14Speaker 1: You've said that, You've said that.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I just don't. Maybe a new voice in the
- 12:19Speaker 2: in the locker room will turn things around. But this
- 12:22Speaker 2: team feels like it is what it is.
- 12:23Speaker 3: I don't.
- 12:23Speaker 2: I don't think Topper was like the main component to
- 12:27Speaker 2: their failure so far this year.
- 12:28Speaker 1: You have so many veterans on this team, and again
- 12:32Speaker 1: it goes back to what I was saying, so many
- 12:33Speaker 1: personalities too. I wonder if it gets to the point,
- 12:36Speaker 1: because we see this in football all the time. You
- 12:38Speaker 1: can have a bunch of veterans, a bunch of players
- 12:42Speaker 1: who are damn good at what they do on the field,
- 12:46Speaker 1: on the ice, on the court, and things just don't mesh.
- 12:49Speaker 1: How happy were we when James Harden initially came to
- 12:52Speaker 1: the Sixers. We're like, oh my god, but the shit
- 12:55Speaker 1: just didn't mesh, you know, and and and and personalities
- 12:58Speaker 1: clashed and there. It just wasn't right. And I'm wondering,
- 13:02Speaker 1: as these Phillies veterans are getting older, things are just
- 13:05Speaker 1: not right. Personalities not necessarily change, but relationships change. How
- 13:09Speaker 1: does that affect the club house? How does it affect
- 13:12Speaker 1: then on what's going on in the field. I think
- 13:17Speaker 1: that could be part of what this is as well.
- 13:19Speaker 1: Just guys getting older, guys getting more perhaps you know,
- 13:25Speaker 1: solid in their own ways of how they want to
- 13:27Speaker 1: do things and set in their own ways. That that
- 13:30Speaker 1: could be it.
- 13:32Speaker 2: I think Castianis is a good signpost for this situation. Yeah,
- 13:36Speaker 2: you talk about personalities, I think that. I think his
- 13:39Speaker 2: teammates really liked him. Besides, like, despite the bullshit, you know,
- 13:46Speaker 2: I don't think Topper handle it extremely well.
- 13:49Speaker 1: But he was also like.
- 13:51Speaker 2: The perfect example of an older player not performing anymore,
- 13:55Speaker 2: likable guy, liked by his teammates, but just wasn't like,
- 13:59Speaker 2: wasn't forfe anymore. And I feel like some of the
- 14:03Speaker 2: veterans are starting not to perform anymore. I mean, the
- 14:05Speaker 2: real Muto signing to me was like, I know we
- 14:09Speaker 2: need to catch up, but this he's what thirty two
- 14:13Speaker 2: thirty three injured every year. I don Browski should take
- 14:18Speaker 2: way more blame than he than than he did honestly
- 14:21Speaker 2: for the for the building of this team, because it's
- 14:24Speaker 2: just it just doesn't look right on the field. And
- 14:28Speaker 2: I don't have to be John Staliness to say that
- 14:30Speaker 2: just watching this team on the field doesn't look good.
- 14:33Speaker 2: And the untimely hitting is that even the term the
- 14:38Speaker 2: starting pitching is in the toilet. Again, that's that's team
- 14:43Speaker 2: building and not so much the coaching. But I understand
- 14:46Speaker 2: why they let him go. And maybe maybe like again
- 14:49Speaker 2: Topper came in and turned the team around, maybe another
- 14:51Speaker 2: voice comes in. Joe Girotti's still available out there if
- 14:55Speaker 2: we wanted to go back to back to the original manager.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Do you hear what I said? Oh, oh, Joe Girardi, Yes, goodness, gracious,
- 15:05Speaker 1: sorry I was. I was looking at something on the
- 15:08Speaker 1: stupid stream yard thing while you were talking. As I
- 15:10Speaker 1: was getting ready to segue into the next thing. I
- 15:12Speaker 1: thought you were No, I thought you were accepting that.
- 15:16Speaker 2: I'm like, no, it's not what he No, no, no, horrendous, No,
- 15:20Speaker 2: Yeah that was good.
- 15:22Speaker 1: You got me. You got me on that one, really though, folks,
- 15:27Speaker 1: I mean I think that, at least for me, he's
- 15:32Speaker 1: the winningest regular season manager Rob Thompson winning a regular
- 15:36Speaker 1: season manager in Philly's history since the twentieth century. And
- 15:41Speaker 1: part of me thinks that he deserved better in a way,
- 15:46Speaker 1: you know, at the end of the day, I kind
- 15:47Speaker 1: of think he deserved a little bit better, just based
- 15:50Speaker 1: on after Girardi and what he did. And again, I
- 15:56Speaker 1: hate the narrative of the running it back thing, because
- 15:58Speaker 1: these guys are fucking talent. They just they are talented.
- 16:02Speaker 1: I think they're just getting so set in their ways
- 16:04Speaker 1: during their veteran years here and as they are getting
- 16:07Speaker 1: older that it's tough to break out of that. Like
- 16:10Speaker 1: that's honestly, that's kind of what I think it is
- 16:11Speaker 1: right now at this point. So anyway, don't up and
- 16:14Speaker 1: labor the point. Should we get into some Eagles talk,
- 16:18Speaker 1: we're gonna go that. Why don't we do that? Actually,
- 16:20Speaker 1: why don't we take a break first, and then we're
- 16:22Speaker 1: gonna get into some Eagles talk. Folks, stick with us,
- 16:25Speaker 1: we'll be right back. All right. We are back, and
- 16:29Speaker 1: we're gonna get into some Eagles post draft talk. I
- 16:32Speaker 1: will say I had a great conversation with Brendan Dieg
- 16:35Speaker 1: from thescore dot com on the table Talk show. Head
- 16:38Speaker 1: back in the podcast feed, listen to that if you
- 16:40Speaker 1: haven't already where we really were analyzing Eagles draft picks
- 16:44Speaker 1: and the direction that the front office is going with
- 16:47Speaker 1: these draft picks. But Eric, we got together as we
- 16:51Speaker 1: do with our buddies during the NFL Draft and it
- 16:54Speaker 1: was a fun time. I mean, we tend to we
- 16:57Speaker 1: tend to enjoy hanging out more than we do actually
- 17:01Speaker 1: like the draft at times. You know, we we were,
- 17:04Speaker 1: we were we were all waiting for Eagles picks. Our
- 17:06Speaker 1: one buddy is a Jets fan waiting for that pick,
- 17:09Speaker 1: and uh also checking out the Pittsburgh Steelers picks because
- 17:13Speaker 1: one of our other buddies is a Steelers fan. But
- 17:15Speaker 1: I think after it's all been said and done, analysts
- 17:20Speaker 1: have really been saying the Eagles had a fantastic draft
- 17:23Speaker 1: for the for the most part, usually a A minus
- 17:26Speaker 1: is a few analysts said Eagles had an A plus draft.
- 17:31Speaker 1: Some folks said it was a bee. It's all subjective,
- 17:33Speaker 1: but at the end of the day, the wide receiver
- 17:36Speaker 1: room is going to look a lot different because Makai
- 17:38Speaker 1: Lemon is coming to Philadelphia five foot eleven one hundred
- 17:42Speaker 1: and ninety two pounds. He just he's just an amazing
- 17:46Speaker 1: route runner. He goes through traffic on the field without fear,
- 17:52Speaker 1: and I think it's gonna be a fascinating wide receiver room.
- 17:57Speaker 1: He's gonna be there with Devonte Smith, Dantavian Wix, Hollywood.
- 18:01Speaker 1: Brown was signed to a one year deal as well.
- 18:03Speaker 1: I mean, conventional wisdom, says aj Brown. It's gonna be
- 18:07Speaker 1: out the door in a trade within the foreseeable future.
- 18:09Speaker 1: Eli Stowers the next tight end, possibly of the future,
- 18:12Speaker 1: and we know how second round tight ends have worked
- 18:15Speaker 1: out with the Philadelphia Eagles. I was a little baffled
- 18:19Speaker 1: with the Cole Payton quarterbacks a pick, considering Tanner McKee
- 18:24Speaker 1: Andy Dalton are there to back up Jalen Hurts. But
- 18:29Speaker 1: I overall a really good draft I think by the
- 18:33Speaker 1: Eagles and Howie Roseman. The guy just knows what he's doing, man,
- 18:37Speaker 1: and it's so good to see a year after year.
- 18:39Speaker 1: We don't know how the season's gonna go. But I
- 18:41Speaker 1: generally like the draft. I'm actually I would give the
- 18:44Speaker 1: Eagles an A minus.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree, of course, it could be an f
- 18:50Speaker 2: who the hell knows, Like right one thing. One thing
- 18:55Speaker 2: I was thinking about for our one segment, the love
- 18:57Speaker 2: it hated thing, Yeah, was just the the post analysis
- 19:02Speaker 2: of the draft, like it's it's bonkers, how much is
- 19:06Speaker 2: out there? Yeah, and how many opinions they're like, yes,
- 19:10Speaker 2: I mean, I mean it's pretty I think it's pretty
- 19:13Speaker 2: well known that the Jaguars had a bad draft because
- 19:17Speaker 2: they have this really young GM now is like twenty eight,
- 19:19Speaker 2: and he thinks he knows better than everybody else. Yes,
- 19:22Speaker 2: And did you just watch his uh his press conference
- 19:26Speaker 2: after the draft. I saw clips.
- 19:28Speaker 1: I mean it was it was cringey.
- 19:31Speaker 2: It was like a gen Zer like, yeah, Boomers and
- 19:35Speaker 2: gen X people like it was that kind of yes,
- 19:37Speaker 2: I know better than everyone else. You drafted two tight
- 19:39Speaker 2: ends in like the top four rounds on one's a
- 19:43Speaker 2: strictly blocking tight end whatever. That's that I get, But
- 19:47Speaker 2: like just the grading system. But I still love the draft.
- 19:51Speaker 2: For the Eagles, they they had a really good mix
- 19:54Speaker 2: of like drafting for need and best player available. Yeah,
- 19:58Speaker 2: I thought, like especially with their first three picks, Like, offensively,
- 20:04Speaker 2: they were terrible last year. The defense fell apart at
- 20:07Speaker 2: the end of the season, but for the most part solid,
- 20:09Speaker 2: So they really went offense heavy. So I love the guard, tackle,
- 20:15Speaker 2: tight end, wide receiver. It's just get the bodies in there.
- 20:17Speaker 2: I wish Jeff Stallin was here to coach the offensive
- 20:20Speaker 2: line be a big help for these new guys. But hey,
- 20:25Speaker 2: two things. I two things that really jumped out to me. One,
- 20:28Speaker 2: you just mentioned the quarterback from North Dakota State. Does
- 20:32Speaker 2: Sean Manyon decide to do like a Taysom Hill thing
- 20:35Speaker 2: with him?
- 20:36Speaker 1: That's what's being talked about. Yeah, yeah, I.
- 20:38Speaker 2: Mean it was pretty obvious from the start when they
- 20:40Speaker 2: drafted him. It's like that's probably what they're going to
- 20:41Speaker 2: maybe think about. And also Sean Manyon, So the one
- 20:48Speaker 2: thing that jumped out to me.
- 20:49Speaker 1: Okay, so A J.
- 20:50Speaker 2: Brown isn't up the field wide receiver on the sideline
- 20:54Speaker 2: wide receiver. You know, they pretty much have now all
- 20:58Speaker 2: their wide receivers in any Eli Stowers, They're all like
- 21:02Speaker 2: middle of the field guys. And you know Poopol Holes
- 21:06Speaker 2: was scared to death of the middle of the field
- 21:08Speaker 2: never went while yeah, it was always on the outside.
- 21:11Speaker 2: So I'm thinking Sean Manion must have a game plan
- 21:16Speaker 2: or better get a game plan ready for going over
- 21:19Speaker 2: the middle a lot more.
- 21:20Speaker 1: You know, and we know the Jalen Hurts has had
- 21:22Speaker 1: with throwing over the middle.
- 21:24Speaker 2: I was just about to say that, like, but maybe
- 21:26Speaker 2: you got to put some more faith into his hands.
- 21:29Speaker 2: Maybe maybe like a new offensive coordinator, new new new
- 21:33Speaker 2: direction will help with that with his confidence. But I
- 21:36Speaker 2: really feel like that that I think we're going to
- 21:37Speaker 2: see a lot of that this offense, that this this
- 21:39Speaker 2: season coming up, where the ball is gonna be in
- 21:42Speaker 2: the middle of the field a lot more because they
- 21:43Speaker 2: don't have the speed. If they do trade a J. Brown,
- 21:46Speaker 2: they don't have a ton to go up the sideline. Yeah,
- 21:50Speaker 2: you know, because I don't think Hollywood Brown is that
- 21:52Speaker 2: guy but for speed.
- 21:53Speaker 1: But he's hurt every year.
- 21:54Speaker 2: I have no faith that he's even going to be
- 21:55Speaker 2: like part of the team at some point.
- 21:57Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what makes them, kay lemon So pick so interesting.
- 22:02Speaker 1: And the fact that DeVante Smith is there too. I mean,
- 22:04Speaker 1: two speedsters that are actually going to be your number
- 22:06Speaker 1: one and number two. Yeah, that's what makes it really interesting.
- 22:11Speaker 1: But the most intriguing.
- 22:12Speaker 2: I read a lot about this guy before the draft
- 22:16Speaker 2: started and when the Eagles drafted him.
- 22:19Speaker 1: The kid from.
- 22:19Speaker 2: Nigeria that you are, Binard Oh my gosh, Yes, seventh
- 22:24Speaker 2: round pick.
- 22:24Speaker 1: He was picked two point fifty one, the second to
- 22:27Speaker 1: the last Eagles pick. Holy cow, I.
- 22:31Speaker 2: You know everyone talks about Jordan mylotta. They took him
- 22:33Speaker 2: in the seventh round. He was playing rugby yep, so
- 22:37Speaker 2: he at least was playing something resembling football. From I understand,
- 22:41Speaker 2: this guy hasn't played football ever.
- 22:43Speaker 1: Not the most part. Nothing, nothing at all.
- 22:47Speaker 2: But I did see footage of him dunking basketball's thirty
- 22:51Speaker 2: six inch verts, Like just absurd. I've never seen a
- 22:55Speaker 2: guy built like him, honestly, Like he's a freak of nature. Yes,
- 23:00Speaker 2: if you can just teach him how to put one
- 23:03Speaker 2: hand down and say go get the quarterback fast, like
- 23:07Speaker 2: that's your job. You're gonna come out on third down
- 23:08Speaker 2: and that's it. Maybe maybe there's something there. I I
- 23:12Speaker 2: love that pick because it's like, what the hell, Yeah,
- 23:15Speaker 2: you're you're a really good team. You win the nf
- 23:17Speaker 2: NFC East every year and you have a great roster.
- 23:20Speaker 2: Take a flyer on the most ridiculous athlete I may
- 23:23Speaker 2: have ever seen in a combine. Yes, what the hell?
- 23:25Speaker 1: It's just like it's when I learned about him a
- 23:29Speaker 1: little bit more, I was like. It kind of reminds
- 23:31Speaker 1: me of the scenes and Forrest Gump where they're just like,
- 23:34Speaker 1: give Gump the ball and he just runs.
- 23:37Speaker 3: You know.
- 23:38Speaker 1: It's like, all right, all right, mister Bernard quarterback, go
- 23:44Speaker 1: just go get him, just teach him how to do that.
- 23:46Speaker 1: By the way, Forrest, Forrest would have got killed. It's ridiculous.
- 23:53Speaker 2: Did you ever go back and watch some of those plays,
- 23:55Speaker 2: Like the whole team goes this way and then goes
- 23:58Speaker 2: It's like, what what's the other team doing?
- 23:59Speaker 1: Like he's because he said because sometimes he's running like
- 24:03Speaker 1: across the field to go to the sideline, you know,
- 24:06Speaker 1: and they're like, no, not this way, you dummy. Oh okay,
- 24:09Speaker 1: I gotta go. Thista and the.
- 24:11Speaker 2: Other the other teams like Keystone Cops, they're like, whoa,
- 24:13Speaker 2: my gosh, where's he going? Like like, I hate that
- 24:17Speaker 2: part of the movie.
- 24:18Speaker 1: It's dumb. Look, what are your thoughts on the Eagles draft?
- 24:23Speaker 1: Leave us a comment below if you're watching on YouTube.
- 24:25Speaker 1: Would love to hear your thoughts. This team is continuing
- 24:29Speaker 1: to build through the draft, very very noticeable in terms
- 24:33Speaker 1: of how he Roseman did in terms of building through
- 24:36Speaker 1: the draft and what the future holds for this team.
- 24:39Speaker 1: So again we're gonna take another break here and then
- 24:43Speaker 1: when we get back, we're gonna get into our new segment,
- 24:46Speaker 1: love to love to see It, Hate to See It?
- 24:48Speaker 1: And then some sixers in NBA talk stick with us.
- 24:51Speaker 1: We'll be right back. It's time to introduce a new
- 24:56Speaker 1: segment here at the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show love
- 25:00Speaker 1: to See It, Hate to See It. This is where
- 25:03Speaker 1: we talk about anything this past week that we'd love
- 25:06Speaker 1: to see and vice versa. Anything that we hated to
- 25:09Speaker 1: see in the world. Doesn't have to be about sports.
- 25:13Speaker 1: It can actually be about anything. So we are going
- 25:16Speaker 1: to be diving into this and uh, love to see it,
- 25:21Speaker 1: hate to see It? Eric, let's start with love to
- 25:23Speaker 1: see It? What what? What this past week? Did you absolutely
- 25:26Speaker 1: love to see.
- 25:28Speaker 2: This One's pretty easy for me. I mean I could
- 25:30Speaker 2: just say the Flyers going into the second round, but yeah,
- 25:34Speaker 2: I'm a basketball guy obviously, and Embiid coming back last
- 25:38Speaker 2: night and just and just doing Embiid things. Thirty three
- 25:43Speaker 2: thirty three points, what, eight eight assists, five rebounds. Yes,
- 25:48Speaker 2: for a guy who can't jump anymore. I don't know
- 25:50Speaker 2: if you saw him trying to dunk that game. Yes,
- 25:53Speaker 2: he could barely get it over the rim. He's seven
- 25:56Speaker 2: to but my god, like and I think I think
- 26:00Speaker 2: it was it was Jeff Tieger. Lou Williams on a
- 26:02Speaker 2: podcast today was like, if Ebid never got hurt and
- 26:05Speaker 2: just had a normal career, he's probably the best big
- 26:07Speaker 2: man of all.
- 26:08Speaker 1: Time, of all time.
- 26:09Speaker 2: Absolutely, yeah, I mean you got Kareem Bill Bill Russell,
- 26:13Speaker 2: But I think it's a solid argument because the guy
- 26:17Speaker 2: is so talented and it's such a shame what's happened
- 26:20Speaker 2: him physically, But like, yeah, I still love him. I
- 26:24Speaker 2: still absolutely adore Embiid. I probably have bitched about him
- 26:28Speaker 2: the most out of any Philly athlete in my lifetime.
- 26:32Speaker 1: But you still give him respect and you always have.
- 26:34Speaker 1: And there are certain contingencies within the Sixers fan base
- 26:38Speaker 1: that don't give him that respect anymore. It's okay to
- 26:41Speaker 1: be critical of Joel Embiid every now and again as
- 26:43Speaker 1: one of the greatest athletes ever in the city of Philadelphia,
- 26:47Speaker 1: but you've always given him, and I think we have
- 26:49Speaker 1: here on the show too, like given him the respect
- 26:51Speaker 1: that he absolutely deserves.
- 26:54Speaker 2: I mean, there was a time where you could say
- 26:56Speaker 2: he was a little lazy, out of shape, you know
- 26:59Speaker 2: that that whole thing. Did he want it bad? Did
- 27:02Speaker 2: he want to play? You know that? That's that was
- 27:04Speaker 2: That was one of the things early on with him. Yeah,
- 27:07Speaker 2: I think he always has. I mean, his reaction in
- 27:11Speaker 2: twenty nineteen, if it was in to the Raptors, obviously
- 27:14Speaker 2: he was. He was destroyed by that. The guy cares
- 27:16Speaker 2: and he does bust his ass and tries to stay healthy.
- 27:21Speaker 2: He can't help his expend Pendi's almost exploding. Yeah, like, yeah,
- 27:25Speaker 2: he can't help almost getting what cerebral palsy the one year. Yes,
- 27:30Speaker 2: he can't help that. So like, but for him to
- 27:33Speaker 2: come back. He came back in Game four and he
- 27:36Speaker 2: was he was awful, like he I mean, he had
- 27:37Speaker 2: a bunch of points, but he fucked up the rhythm
- 27:41Speaker 2: of the team. He can't. They finally figured out last night.
- 27:44Speaker 2: He stopped shooting three pointers, they parked him down low,
- 27:47Speaker 2: and then they just dominated the Celtics in the second half.
- 27:49Speaker 2: We'll get into that more a little later, but just
- 27:52Speaker 2: seeing him come back and kill it, like it was like, yeah,
- 27:56Speaker 2: your centers are cute. They've had a good season, Celtics,
- 27:58Speaker 2: but guess what the biggest monster down there and you
- 28:03Speaker 2: have no chance against him. He was awesome, and they
- 28:07Speaker 2: have a shot in Game six and then game seven,
- 28:09Speaker 2: who the hell knows, and it's you know you want
- 28:13Speaker 2: to see. In Game four he helped the team not win,
- 28:15Speaker 2: He absolutely helped them win last night. And I just
- 28:18Speaker 2: love the guy and it was really nice to see
- 28:20Speaker 2: him come back and play that frigging well and and
- 28:23Speaker 2: save the season.
- 28:24Speaker 1: Honestly, yeah, great, I mean great comments. You love to
- 28:28Speaker 1: see it, You absolutely love to see it. I know
- 28:30Speaker 1: we're going to be getting into Joel Embiid a little
- 28:32Speaker 1: bit later with our guest Sean Bernard, but it's a
- 28:36Speaker 1: fantastic love to see it part of this segment here,
- 28:39Speaker 1: And for me, I'm gonna go to a clip that
- 28:43Speaker 1: I saw on was it TikTok or it doesn't matter
- 28:48Speaker 1: which social media site I saw it on, but was
- 28:51Speaker 1: watching for whatever reason, and maybe because of one of
- 28:53Speaker 1: my neighbors ran in the Boston Marathon and finished it.
- 28:57Speaker 1: Shout out to you, David Cowened, not that you're listening,
- 29:00Speaker 1: but still shout out to you for getting it done,
- 29:03Speaker 1: actually doing it, training for so many months and then
- 29:06Speaker 1: having so many health issues leading up to it. And
- 29:09Speaker 1: the fact that he actually did it. But I was
- 29:11Speaker 1: watching some Boston Marathon runners and I think folks have
- 29:15Speaker 1: seen right at the end individual. I think he might
- 29:20Speaker 1: have been Somalian perhaps, where he just couldn't run anymore.
- 29:24Speaker 1: His legs just weren't working. His legs were not working.
- 29:27Speaker 1: But the love for the Boston met that runner from
- 29:31Speaker 1: other runners who helped pick him up, picked up. Did
- 29:35Speaker 1: you see this clip at all? Picked up this guy
- 29:37Speaker 1: and took him right to the finish line. I just
- 29:40Speaker 1: loved to see that. And I learned a lot more
- 29:42Speaker 1: this past week just about the Boston Marathon, just diving
- 29:46Speaker 1: into it a little bit more. I was a little
- 29:48Speaker 1: I was I was a little too online and I
- 29:51Speaker 1: was just watching watching stories and what the Boston Marathon
- 29:56Speaker 1: means to certain people, and the fact that two runners
- 29:59Speaker 1: were able to help that that particular runner get to
- 30:01Speaker 1: the finish line. I love to see that.
- 30:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I've I saw the footage. It's it's one of
- 30:08Speaker 2: those heartwarming, like people are still good in the world
- 30:11Speaker 2: kind of thing. Yeah, but I gotta say, like not
- 30:14Speaker 2: totally surprised by it, because I ran one marathon in
- 30:17Speaker 2: my lifetime and it really is like a communal thing. Yeah,
- 30:22Speaker 2: like you're you're in this together. You're doing this insane thing.
- 30:25Speaker 2: You think about it. Twenty six point two miles. It's
- 30:27Speaker 2: really really hard. My legs were jelly when I was done.
- 30:31Speaker 2: But you do kind of run with the same people
- 30:34Speaker 2: for a lot of it. You do talk to them,
- 30:37Speaker 2: You really do get like pats on the back, people
- 30:39Speaker 2: on the side, and you're competitive.
- 30:42Speaker 1: You want to finish.
- 30:43Speaker 2: I'm always never gonna win a marathon. But like, yeah,
- 30:46Speaker 2: if I saw somebody go down that I was running with,
- 30:49Speaker 2: absolutely would pick them up. Yeah, because you're in this
- 30:51Speaker 2: thing together. Because it's it's just it's it is a
- 30:54Speaker 2: it is an insane thing to do, and you're surrounded
- 30:57Speaker 2: by these other insane people that are.
- 30:58Speaker 1: Doing it with you.
- 30:59Speaker 2: So not surprised, but still awesome to see. I love
- 31:03Speaker 2: to see it, Jeff, Yes.
- 31:04Speaker 1: I love to see it. Love to see it, folks,
- 31:08Speaker 1: let's go to hate to see it. What this passed
- 31:11Speaker 1: the week? Did you just you hated seeing it or
- 31:14Speaker 1: hated hearing it or any anything like that? What's that
- 31:17Speaker 1: for you?
- 31:17Speaker 3: Eric?
- 31:19Speaker 2: This is also NBA related, Okay, Just Oklahoma City is
- 31:26Speaker 2: such a great team. They're they're so fucking good. SGA
- 31:29Speaker 2: is probably the best playing league right now with Yokicha's
- 31:33Speaker 2: kind of swoon in the playoffs a little bit, but
- 31:36Speaker 2: the foulbating and the whining and the flopping that Okaysee
- 31:41Speaker 2: is doing when they don't have to do it like
- 31:45Speaker 2: they're so goddamn good, like they they won the finals
- 31:49Speaker 2: last year. They blew through the regular season for the
- 31:51Speaker 2: most part. But the amount of like like SGA is
- 31:58Speaker 2: like brutal to watch sometimes, Like the last game of
- 32:01Speaker 2: the series, Game four, he was awesome. He didn't felibate
- 32:03Speaker 2: and he went what fifteen for eighteen from the field.
- 32:05Speaker 2: He just dominated the Suns. But for the rest of
- 32:09Speaker 2: the series he was like the flopping and the falling
- 32:13Speaker 2: over when nobody touches him, and him kicking his legs
- 32:17Speaker 2: out and feed out against the defender and falling over
- 32:20Speaker 2: that kind of bullshit, like, I you don't have to
- 32:22Speaker 2: do that, dude, Yeah, you're the best guard in the league.
- 32:25Speaker 1: You don't have to do that.
- 32:27Speaker 2: The worst one was ched Holmgren went up was getting
- 32:31Speaker 2: was he's what seven to one. He was getting guarded
- 32:34Speaker 2: by Colin Gillespie, former Villanova player who's a six foot
- 32:37Speaker 2: guard for the Suns, and like he ran out Gillespie
- 32:42Speaker 2: it's six feet tall, ran out onto uh Chet who's
- 32:46Speaker 2: seven to one. Remind just remind you. And Chet actually
- 32:51Speaker 2: leaned into him and took and threw a jumper over
- 32:53Speaker 2: the backboard to get the foul.
- 32:56Speaker 1: I'm like, you don't what are you doing? Yes, seven
- 32:59Speaker 1: to one. It's become such commonplace to do this in
- 33:03Speaker 1: the NBA anymore that even the stars, the best in
- 33:06Speaker 1: the league, feel that they have to do this. I mean,
- 33:09Speaker 1: it's it's more of a culture thing, don't you think
- 33:11Speaker 1: at this point? Oh, for sure.
- 33:13Speaker 2: And the game now is like it doesn't even it
- 33:17Speaker 2: doesn't even look like the game from even like twenty
- 33:19Speaker 2: years ago when they had to put the hand check
- 33:21Speaker 2: rules in because the fouling when he got in the
- 33:24Speaker 2: lane was so bad. Yeah, in the hacking, But now
- 33:27Speaker 2: it's gone like so far in the other direction where
- 33:29Speaker 2: teams are like, you know, SGA will shoot, the guy
- 33:33Speaker 2: touches his shoelace and he does a backflip somersault onto
- 33:37Speaker 2: the ground and it's like, but the thing with them
- 33:40Speaker 2: is that I really hate I hate to see it,
- 33:42Speaker 2: is that you don't have to do it like, you're
- 33:45Speaker 2: just a tremendous team. You're a great defensive team. You
- 33:47Speaker 2: have this all world scorer. You don't have to flop, right,
- 33:51Speaker 2: you don't have to browbeate, right, Like that's what teams
- 33:54Speaker 2: like like the Hawks should be doing. It's the Knicks.
- 33:57Speaker 2: Yeah not okay, see who's probably the favorite to win? Again?
- 34:01Speaker 2: I hate it.
- 34:02Speaker 1: It drives me.
- 34:03Speaker 2: Nuts as a fan. And you know, and even if
- 34:07Speaker 2: the Sixers did it, I would have a hard time
- 34:09Speaker 2: defending it.
- 34:09Speaker 1: Yeah, it really be difficult. Are you are you old
- 34:11Speaker 1: man yelling at the clouds here? Do you think?
- 34:15Speaker 2: I don't think so, because I even see younger has
- 34:17Speaker 2: on Twitter late and again like what are you doing? Like, yeah,
- 34:21Speaker 2: I agree, Yeah, yeah.
- 34:25Speaker 1: The culture of it is extremely annoying when you know
- 34:28Speaker 1: these guys can give you better basketball at the end
- 34:31Speaker 1: at the end of the day. So it's a good
- 34:33Speaker 1: hate to see it. My hate to see it, buddy,
- 34:37Speaker 1: comes down. This has nothing to do with sports. So,
- 34:39Speaker 1: as a lot of folks know, I'm running for state
- 34:43Speaker 1: representative this year in the district that I live in,
- 34:46Speaker 1: and I was talking to a couple members of my
- 34:48Speaker 1: campaign team today. I admit a Dave Chappelle reference we're
- 34:54Speaker 1: talking about from the Chappelle Show. Okay, look now, listen
- 34:56Speaker 1: Dave Chappelle over the years here, you know, he's he's
- 34:59Speaker 1: gone down some paths that I necessarily haven't fully agreed
- 35:03Speaker 1: with here and there with some things. But man, the
- 35:05Speaker 1: Chappelle Show back in the day was amazing, fantastic. I
- 35:09Speaker 1: made a reference to these young individuals today who are
- 35:13Speaker 1: in their twenties on my campaign team, and they're like, oh, yeah,
- 35:17Speaker 1: that's your generation comedy. I was just I felt like shit,
- 35:24Speaker 1: I really did. I was like, god, it you mean funny? Yeah,
- 35:28Speaker 1: exactly exactly because I'm I mean, I'm thinking back to
- 35:33Speaker 1: his his r Kelly bit on the p on You video.
- 35:37Speaker 1: I mean, it's that was genius. That was genius.
- 35:39Speaker 2: And there's so many, so many genius bits. Yes, his
- 35:43Speaker 2: early stand up the shows have probably top five funniest
- 35:46Speaker 2: show of all time. Yes, and no offense to the
- 35:50Speaker 2: younger generation. I do watch stand up clips on Instagram
- 35:53Speaker 2: quite a bit. Yeah, on Twitter, same here, and you
- 35:58Speaker 2: know there's there's some really funny comics. Yes, men and
- 36:01Speaker 2: women honestly, and their their their perspective on things is
- 36:05Speaker 2: really interesting and very funny, but there's there's some ship
- 36:08Speaker 2: out there that it's it's it's along, it goes along,
- 36:14Speaker 2: like with the gen Z stare yes kind of comedy
- 36:17Speaker 2: where they're.
- 36:17Speaker 1: Like, oh up to, I feel like going anywhere?
- 36:20Speaker 2: Yes, you're gonna tell a joke or like what are
- 36:24Speaker 2: we waiting for here?
- 36:25Speaker 1: Like, but yeah, that's I hate. I hated to. I
- 36:28Speaker 1: hated to see it on my text scream a screen
- 36:32Speaker 1: on my screen on my phone. They were just like, uh, yeah,
- 36:34Speaker 1: that's your generation comedy, I guess. And I was just like, oh, man,
- 36:39Speaker 1: hated you.
- 36:40Speaker 2: Know you should do now now ten a day show.
- 36:44Speaker 2: Just just brate them with it.
- 36:47Speaker 1: I'm just gonna send them clips and say you must
- 36:50Speaker 1: watch it. You have to watch it, all right? Well
- 36:54Speaker 1: that is our I love to see it, hate to
- 36:57Speaker 1: see it segment here and we we are also gonna
- 37:01Speaker 1: now get into some basketball talk. We got to talk
- 37:04Speaker 1: about the Sixers. We got to talk about first Eric,
- 37:07Speaker 1: the NBA, the new and revised NBA Draft lottery. It's
- 37:12Speaker 1: a proposal now seems a little bit confusing, and the
- 37:16Speaker 1: goal from Adam Silver and the NBA front offices is
- 37:20Speaker 1: this is gonna help to dissuade teams from tanking. I
- 37:26Speaker 1: don't know if this is gonna do it or not.
- 37:28Speaker 1: I briefly looked, briefly looked at it today and we
- 37:33Speaker 1: are going to put up on the screen here the
- 37:35Speaker 1: NBA Lottery reform proposal. If you're watching on YouTube, you're
- 37:40Speaker 1: obviously seeing this. If you're listening on an audio podcast platform,
- 37:43Speaker 1: head on over to YouTube search out Philadelphia Sports Table
- 37:46Speaker 1: podcast show, subscribe and check out what we're looking at
- 37:50Speaker 1: right now. So the current odds and new odds is
- 37:54Speaker 1: what we have on our screen right now. Eric, give
- 37:58Speaker 1: me your thoughts were where are you coming in with this?
- 38:01Speaker 1: It does seem a little confusing, to be honest with you.
- 38:05Speaker 1: I don't know what this fixes.
- 38:07Speaker 2: Yeah, right, Like I've I've read three articles already. This
- 38:11Speaker 2: just came out like today, right, I think shams. Yeah, yeah,
- 38:15Speaker 2: I've already had three articles. I watched Zach Lowe on
- 38:19Speaker 2: ESPN kind of explain it, and I think the consensus
- 38:23Speaker 2: is this isn't going to fix anything.
- 38:25Speaker 1: This is just this is putting.
- 38:28Speaker 2: This is putting a grenade on a band aid that
- 38:31Speaker 2: was that was put on like a machete. Like it's
- 38:35Speaker 2: just it's just a bad how does this help like tanking?
- 38:41Speaker 2: Like if you're the Wizards and you have the worst record, right, yes,
- 38:45Speaker 2: which I think they did this year, or you whoever
- 38:47Speaker 2: had it Utah, maybe, So does this incentivize you to
- 38:52Speaker 2: what win five more games through the fourth worst team?
- 38:55Speaker 1: And that's what I was gonna say, maybe will be
- 38:57Speaker 1: the sixth or seventh worst team because we have the
- 39:02Speaker 1: same percentage shot as the tenth worst team and the
- 39:07Speaker 1: fifth worst team.
- 39:08Speaker 2: Yeah, it's really strange and like like if you're if
- 39:13Speaker 2: you're if you're a legit if you're a legit bad team, right,
- 39:17Speaker 2: like like Brooklyn, Yes, you're just a shitty team and
- 39:21Speaker 2: you're your management makes really bizarre decisions. I'm not sure
- 39:27Speaker 2: giving you five point what four percent odds? Yeah, as
- 39:31Speaker 2: opposed to the eight whatever it is? Does that help
- 39:35Speaker 2: the NBA at all? Like I I like, it's not
- 39:39Speaker 2: like teams aren't trying to build a team, you know they.
- 39:44Speaker 2: I just don't understand, like what how this helps? Like
- 39:48Speaker 2: all you have to do is like win what's three
- 39:50Speaker 2: more games to bump yourself up to the fourth worst team. Yeah,
- 39:55Speaker 2: And like teams are gonna have like atrocious injuries, like
- 39:59Speaker 2: like the Pacers did you know this pass offseason? So
- 40:01Speaker 2: they had one of the worst records in the league,
- 40:03Speaker 2: and why should they get penalized for Like they didn't
- 40:09Speaker 2: necessarily try to suck. They were just in the finals. Yeah,
- 40:13Speaker 2: and this gives them five point four percent. They're not
- 40:16Speaker 2: going to be this bad again next year. But like,
- 40:18Speaker 2: it doesn't fix any this This is just this is
- 40:23Speaker 2: hokum jeffs as the older older generation would say, this
- 40:29Speaker 2: is bullpucky. Yeah, like like, okay, so the current ods
- 40:32Speaker 2: started in twenty nineteen. You go back to ninety four
- 40:35Speaker 2: to twenty eighteen. I'm looking at it right now. Worst
- 40:38Speaker 2: record was twenty five twenty percent, fifteen twelve, eighty six
- 40:42Speaker 2: and so on and so on.
- 40:45Speaker 1: Why didn't that work? Like what were they?
- 40:47Speaker 2: I know the sixers are probably the catalyst for the
- 40:50Speaker 2: initial change in twenty nineteen. Yeah, but the sisters didn't
- 40:53Speaker 2: gett any better, right, and you're still going to see
- 40:55Speaker 2: shenanigans going on, Like I I was thinking about it,
- 40:59Speaker 2: thinking about it was the problem is of going down
- 41:01Speaker 2: this rabbit hole.
- 41:02Speaker 1: It was getting confused, like.
- 41:03Speaker 2: What the like, how do you fix this? Because there's
- 41:05Speaker 2: still there's so many proposals and I finally thought of it,
- 41:08Speaker 2: and I saw this guy sweet him, Like, this guy
- 41:10Speaker 2: said exactly what I'm thinking. Change it back now to
- 41:14Speaker 2: the way it was ninety four to twenty eighteen, Like
- 41:16Speaker 2: I just said, the twenty five, twenty and so on
- 41:18Speaker 2: down the road, down the line, and don't let teams
- 41:22Speaker 2: get top three picks in consecutive drafts.
- 41:26Speaker 1: There you go, How hard is that?
- 41:28Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 41:28Speaker 2: And if a team is flagrantly awfully tanking, like like
- 41:34Speaker 2: Utah Jazz, like I might have broke rules in my opinion,
- 41:38Speaker 2: like they were tanking so obviously taking team and taking
- 41:41Speaker 2: players out in the fourth quarter. Yeah, Like then maybe
- 41:45Speaker 2: add like like a decreased revenue sharing with like the
- 41:49Speaker 2: teams that are obviously tanking, Yes, like Brooklyn obviously tanked,
- 41:53Speaker 2: Utah obviously tanked. Like maybe you start to take a
- 41:56Speaker 2: couple of million dollars from them from the revenue sharing
- 41:59Speaker 2: stuff to get their get to get their act in order,
- 42:02Speaker 2: and don't let them have a top three pick the
- 42:04Speaker 2: next year if they get one previous year.
- 42:06Speaker 1: What about it? What about not that we talked about,
- 42:09Speaker 1: the not letting teams have a top three player, top
- 42:13Speaker 1: three pick in consecutive drafts. What about not and letting
- 42:17Speaker 1: them have a top five pick too.
- 42:19Speaker 2: Do you know what I mean that, I'm fine with
- 42:21Speaker 2: that yeaheah. It's just I think there's a simpler solution
- 42:25Speaker 2: to this because Adam Silver is already hamstrung teams, even
- 42:29Speaker 2: the good teams, Like he's already hamstrung teams with the apron,
- 42:34Speaker 2: the first apron, second apron stuff. Trying to keep your
- 42:36Speaker 2: teams together, which was like that was the goal for
- 42:39Speaker 2: a while, was trying to keep good players on the
- 42:42Speaker 2: same teams and keep teams gelled in together. Yeah, now
- 42:46Speaker 2: if you want to do that, you know you got
- 42:48Speaker 2: to pay like eighty million dollars in tax right because
- 42:51Speaker 2: of the second apron bullshit, And now you're kind of
- 42:54Speaker 2: hurting the worst teams. I guess if you're like the
- 42:57Speaker 2: Hawks and the Bucks, this is awesome. You're you're just
- 43:00Speaker 2: kind of in the middle all the time. So like
- 43:02Speaker 2: now you have like nine percent chance of getting into
- 43:04Speaker 2: top pick exactly.
- 43:06Speaker 1: But why why do those teams get right?
- 43:08Speaker 2: They kind of suck too. Yes, there's a simp. There's
- 43:12Speaker 2: a simpler solution to this, and this is not it.
- 43:15Speaker 2: This is bad.
- 43:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't like this. This option at all. Yeah, Look,
- 43:19Speaker 1: leave us a comment below. What do you think about
- 43:21Speaker 1: this new NBA lottery reform proposal. It's it's confusing for sure. Again,
- 43:28Speaker 1: let us let us know what you're thinking on YouTube
- 43:30Speaker 1: here about this. And before we go, before we get
- 43:33Speaker 1: to our interview with Sean Bernard about this Sixer Celtics series,
- 43:37Speaker 1: just wanted to give our thoughts because I thought the
- 43:40Speaker 1: Sixers would be gone by now. And as you mentioned earlier, Eric,
- 43:45Speaker 1: because of the incredible play and because of the strength
- 43:50Speaker 1: that is within him in terms of Joe el Embiid,
- 43:54Speaker 1: this team is now. This team is now going to
- 43:56Speaker 1: the to the next game, and there is a very
- 43:58Speaker 1: real possibility and while the percentage may be small that
- 44:02Speaker 1: the Philadelphia seventy six Ers could potentially knock off the Celtics,
- 44:07Speaker 1: there is a possibility that it actually could happen. And
- 44:09Speaker 1: again thanks to Joe Ellenbiid's game five thirty three points
- 44:13Speaker 1: that he put up. I'm just surprised. I'm surprised. I
- 44:18Speaker 1: honestly thought they were gonna get sweeped. I thought it
- 44:20Speaker 1: was gonna be sweep that was gonna be it. Because
- 44:22Speaker 1: this Celtics team has been on fire for most of
- 44:25Speaker 1: the year, even dealing with you know, depth that we
- 44:30Speaker 1: didn't think they had, and all of a sudden depth
- 44:32Speaker 1: stepping up the bench, stepping up throughout the course of
- 44:35Speaker 1: the season. I just thought they were going to kill
- 44:36Speaker 1: the Sixers in the first round here, and it's not happening,
- 44:39Speaker 1: you know. I mean, like, granted, a couple games, Sixers
- 44:41Speaker 1: look like complete shit, but they're sticking around, they're fighting,
- 44:44Speaker 1: they're being resilient here. So I think it's a very
- 44:48Speaker 1: real possibility, slim, but a real possibility they could advance
- 44:51Speaker 1: to the second round.
- 44:52Speaker 2: It's definitely a possibility. I even sprinkle a little cash
- 44:55Speaker 2: on the sees baby plus eleven hundred. Gosh, yeah, we
- 45:03Speaker 2: going sizzla. But no, I mean I in like two
- 45:10Speaker 2: minutes into the second quarter last night, you know, I'm
- 45:12Speaker 2: in two separate six Ers text threads.
- 45:14Speaker 1: Yeah, and you know we.
- 45:16Speaker 2: Had already started the Okay, what do they do this offseason?
- 45:19Speaker 2: When did they fire a nurse? Is it right after
- 45:21Speaker 2: the game?
- 45:21Speaker 1: Right?
- 45:22Speaker 2: Is Beryl Moury fired? Does that asshole Josh Harris sell
- 45:24Speaker 2: the team? I still hope he does sell the teams.
- 45:26Speaker 2: The scumbag and not a good not a good owner.
- 45:28Speaker 1: I think I shot our thread that we're on with
- 45:31Speaker 1: our buddies. I think I shot off a teg. I'm like,
- 45:33Speaker 1: well that's it, we're done. We're done. It's over. And
- 45:36Speaker 1: then all of a sudden, Embids starts to go downhill
- 45:39Speaker 1: in the third and it's like, wow, holy cow, well it.
- 45:43Speaker 2: Nurse did a good job at halftime. He really made
- 45:45Speaker 2: some adjustments. He said, hey, hey, big man, go park
- 45:48Speaker 2: your ass down low right, not with the goddamn threes.
- 45:51Speaker 2: You're one for seven And its completely flipped the game.
- 45:55Speaker 2: And not just that though, whatever he said to them,
- 45:58Speaker 2: they came out with juice and half.
- 46:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 46:01Speaker 2: VJ was playing tremendous defense. And I know we all
- 46:05Speaker 2: hate Paul George, but Paul George was massive last night. Yeah,
- 46:09Speaker 2: Like he kept he kept Brown and Tatum and Check
- 46:12Speaker 2: for the most part, I think they had fifty points combined,
- 46:15Speaker 2: but like they usually average, like in the series, it
- 46:17Speaker 2: got to be averaging like sixty to sixty five. Yeah,
- 46:20Speaker 2: played phenomenal defense. I thought Missoula had a bad game
- 46:23Speaker 2: that the Celtics coach. I thought Pritcher should have been
- 46:26Speaker 2: playing a lot more. But regardless, you know, the Celtics
- 46:32Speaker 2: made some mistakes coaching wise and playing playing player wise.
- 46:35Speaker 2: But you know, this was the first game to sell
- 46:38Speaker 2: The Sixers kicked their ass. Yeah, yeah, like that that
- 46:41Speaker 2: was the thing that jumped out. I was like, wow,
- 46:43Speaker 2: we actually beat their asses in the second half, to
- 46:46Speaker 2: the point where the Celtics fans were leaving with three
- 46:47Speaker 2: minutes left in the fourth quarter. It was like, holy
- 46:49Speaker 2: shit they thought. I mean, they thought they're winning that game.
- 46:52Speaker 2: There's no doubt going into halftime. They let their foot
- 46:56Speaker 2: off the gas. I'm sure they're going to come in
- 46:58Speaker 2: looking to close this out. But I think it's gonna
- 47:02Speaker 2: be Friday night. It's gonna be a rollicking crowd down
- 47:04Speaker 2: there and down in South Philly. And Maxi hasn't had
- 47:09Speaker 2: the Monster Maxi game yet, like he's due for that. Yeah,
- 47:13Speaker 2: we already got the We already got we got the
- 47:14Speaker 2: Monster MBID Monster VJ game, and just have not got
- 47:19Speaker 2: the Maxi Monster game. Maybe that's this game. And then,
- 47:22Speaker 2: like I said, Game seven, it's wide open. Any anything
- 47:26Speaker 2: that happened. I just pray to god Scott Foster's not
- 47:29Speaker 2: coaked or refing in that game, because then it would
- 47:31Speaker 2: really be fucked up. But you know, I pg's playing
- 47:37Speaker 2: really well and Bead's playing well. And I never thought
- 47:41Speaker 2: it'd say that at this point of the time now,
- 47:43Speaker 2: but they're actually the keys to the series at this
- 47:45Speaker 2: point because we need PG to keep playing that that
- 47:48Speaker 2: just tremendous, like twenty fifteen level defense that he's playing
- 47:51Speaker 2: right now. And like I said, if MAXI has one
- 47:55Speaker 2: Monster game and you get you got a couple of
- 47:58Speaker 2: Fluke three pointers and game in a game seven all
- 48:01Speaker 2: of a sudden, like you're you're playing a knixt team
- 48:04Speaker 2: that not overly impressive like in the second round, right right.
- 48:08Speaker 2: I mean, I think that they beat the Hawks last
- 48:10Speaker 2: night pretty badly, but they're not blowing my They're not
- 48:13Speaker 2: blowing my my doors off here. So you know, the
- 48:17Speaker 2: East is wide open, which is why like, just win tomorrow,
- 48:21Speaker 2: please God. Yes, I'm sorry Thursday night. Sorry, yeah, but
- 48:26Speaker 2: still like, please win, give us a chance, make this fun.
- 48:31Speaker 2: The Flyers just made the second round. Yes, like I
- 48:35Speaker 2: I'm a suffering Sixers fan, as you know, like it's
- 48:40Speaker 2: been it's.
- 48:40Speaker 1: Been a rough twenty five years. Yes, you know, it's
- 48:43Speaker 1: pretty much.
- 48:44Speaker 2: I'm fifty, it's half my life.
- 48:48Speaker 1: It's been rough, Like, oh my god, break Yes, give
- 48:52Speaker 1: them a break, folks, give them a break. Six Ers. Well,
- 48:55Speaker 1: that is gonna do it for us right now, and
- 48:58Speaker 1: we're gonna get into interview. Buddy. Great talking to you
- 49:02Speaker 1: as always, great having you on. Any final thoughts before
- 49:05Speaker 1: I let you go, Let's get fired up. Yes, yes, flyers, Yes,
- 49:10Speaker 1: all right, folks, We're gonna take a break, and when
- 49:12Speaker 1: we come back, more Sixer Celtics talk coming your way.
- 49:17Speaker 1: And now on the table, we gotta get into this
- 49:22Speaker 1: Philadelphia seventy six ers team in more detail, what the
- 49:25Speaker 1: series with the Boston Celtics has looked like, and what
- 49:29Speaker 1: could be the future of the Philadelphia seventy six ers
- 49:33Speaker 1: after this season as well. We've got from Fox Sports
- 49:36Speaker 1: Phillies the Gambler Draft Kings and he's just doing a
- 49:40Speaker 1: lot of great stuff out there on the socials as
- 49:42Speaker 1: well at Sean Underscore Bernard one over on the Twitter
- 49:45Speaker 1: slash X. We've got our friend Showan Bernard, my friend.
- 49:48Speaker 1: Thank you for joining us here. Man, It's great to
- 49:50Speaker 1: see you.
- 49:51Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely appreciate you having me as always, Jeff, And
- 49:54Speaker 4: how can we get a little bit of a positivity
- 49:56Speaker 4: I would say to talk about this Sixers again. Knew
- 49:59Speaker 4: exactly what the buckle up forward this series, but a
- 50:01Speaker 4: little bit more competitive, a little bit more entertaining than
- 50:03Speaker 4: I think a lot of people were expecting.
- 50:05Speaker 3: So I'll take down on the positive side.
- 50:06Speaker 1: Absolutely. We're recording this on Wednesday, August twenty ninth. Game
- 50:11Speaker 1: five was last night really surprised a lot of us.
- 50:13Speaker 1: We're gonna get into that in a bit, but from
- 50:17Speaker 1: an overall perspective here, Sean, want to get your assessments
- 50:21Speaker 1: on both of these teams how they have looked in
- 50:23Speaker 1: the first round, the Philadelphia seventy six Ers the Boston Celtics.
- 50:27Speaker 1: I mean, this series has been interesting in certain ways
- 50:30Speaker 1: and other ways. It's been predictable as well. Again, Game
- 50:34Speaker 1: five last night was really really something to watch, specifically
- 50:38Speaker 1: in the second half of that game in terms of
- 50:41Speaker 1: the seventy six Ers. But let's start with the Celtics here.
- 50:44Speaker 1: What are your overall assessments with them what you have
- 50:47Speaker 1: seen thus far during the series.
- 50:49Speaker 4: Yeah, it's been a pretty fascinating season for the Celtics
- 50:51Speaker 4: as a whole. When you flash back to this was
- 50:53Speaker 4: largely like marketed and projected as a gap year for
- 50:56Speaker 4: this team that there were not the expectations that they
- 50:58Speaker 4: would be contending, and then it's a ton of credit
- 51:00Speaker 4: to Joe Mizzola and Jalen Brown, with those guys really
- 51:02Speaker 4: leading the charge for not allowing the standard to slip
- 51:05Speaker 4: and still being one of the best teams in the NBA.
- 51:07Speaker 4: I'm starting to finish this year and obviously allowing the
- 51:09Speaker 4: team to stay afloat to where Jason Tatum could return
- 51:12Speaker 4: and this team a shot at competing right there. So
- 51:14Speaker 4: I think you have to view this season as like
- 51:16Speaker 4: a massive success for the Celtics, regardless of how it ends.
- 51:19Speaker 4: With that being said right there, I don't think this
- 51:21Speaker 4: is a Celtics team that stands up to some of
- 51:23Speaker 4: the past years. Like when you look around at some
- 51:24Speaker 4: of the other guys, the Sam Hausers, the you know,
- 51:27Speaker 4: Baylor Shiremans, there's talent, Like this is still a very
- 51:29Speaker 4: good basketball team, but I do not think it's quite
- 51:32Speaker 4: to the level of like what others were. Now with
- 51:34Speaker 4: that being said, the Eastern Conference is wide open. There's
- 51:36Speaker 4: certainly a world where this team wins the whole conference.
- 51:38Speaker 4: And I sound like a little bit of a talking
- 51:40Speaker 4: out of both sides of my mouth right now, but overall,
- 51:43Speaker 4: they live and die with a three at a really
- 51:44Speaker 4: incredible level, and they've got a ton of shooters and
- 51:47Speaker 4: have had success with it.
- 51:48Speaker 3: But I don't love that model for a team, but
- 51:50Speaker 3: they've obviously had their.
- 51:51Speaker 1: Success they do I honestly, I really do. Part of
- 51:53Speaker 1: me thinks this is not just about talent, but it
- 51:55Speaker 1: also comes down to coaching as well. Would you agree
- 51:57Speaker 1: with that?
- 51:58Speaker 3: Oh? Absolutely?
- 51:59Speaker 4: And Joe Mizzoola, I mean he's been he's straight up
- 52:02Speaker 4: one of the best coaches in the league. And like
- 52:04Speaker 4: the level of the standard, the environment, the identity, however
- 52:08Speaker 4: you want to phrase it. He's really established that with
- 52:10Speaker 4: an organization, which is really hard to do in the NBA,
- 52:12Speaker 4: particularly like the context of how he was brought to
- 52:15Speaker 4: this team, really only getting that opportunity after Ema Udoka
- 52:18Speaker 4: was fired and nobody really having an idea of who
- 52:20Speaker 4: is Joe Mizula At that level of competitiveness that he's established,
- 52:23Speaker 4: I think it speaks volumes to the whole organization.
- 52:25Speaker 1: It really does. Now let's shift our attention to the
- 52:28Speaker 1: Philadelphia seventy six Ers here. From an overall perspective, your
- 52:31Speaker 1: assessments in this first round on how the Sixers have
- 52:35Speaker 1: have really performed overall.
- 52:37Speaker 4: Yeah, they've had two embarrassing games, and the others I've
- 52:40Speaker 4: been really thrilled with is probably how it chalk it
- 52:42Speaker 4: off in like a short phrase right there. I think
- 52:45Speaker 4: all season this has been sort of a theoretical basketball
- 52:48Speaker 4: team that you can see the vision, you can see
- 52:50Speaker 4: how it's designed on paper, but there just has not
- 52:52Speaker 4: been these sample size of watching them play together, watching
- 52:55Speaker 4: these guys compliment.
- 52:56Speaker 3: Each other on the floor.
- 52:57Speaker 4: But there are the flashes, and I thought Game Game
- 53:00Speaker 4: five right there, the most recent matchup like that was
- 53:02Speaker 4: a perfect example of it. If you have Joel Embiid,
- 53:05Speaker 4: there's still nobody in the NBA that can guard this
- 53:07Speaker 4: guy's one on one. You drop it to him the post.
- 53:09Speaker 4: You either throw doubles at him or allow him to
- 53:11Speaker 4: drop thirty three or sixty points if you don't start
- 53:14Speaker 4: doing it sooner, so you see the visual for what
- 53:16Speaker 4: this team can be. I think you're a little shorthanded
- 53:18Speaker 4: him from the benching, and I think that falls on
- 53:20Speaker 4: Daryl Morey's shoulders right there. But ultimately, like this is
- 53:22Speaker 4: still a good basketball team, even though a lot of
- 53:24Speaker 4: people have gotten sick of it in this city.
- 53:25Speaker 1: Yeah, you're absolutely right. They are a good basketball team.
- 53:29Speaker 1: Not necessarily, not by any stretch of the imagination great,
- 53:33Speaker 1: but there there is talent on this team, and I
- 53:36Speaker 1: wish there was. You know, I wish we had our
- 53:38Speaker 1: own Misola. You know, Nick Nurse, who knows what's gonna
- 53:41Speaker 1: happen to him at the conclusion of this season. And
- 53:44Speaker 1: you know, we may make it into that here in
- 53:46Speaker 1: a bit. But you mentioned Joel Embiid, You mentioned the
- 53:49Speaker 1: fact that he dropped thirty three points in Game five.
- 53:51Speaker 1: I mean, the guy is just still unbelievable in terms
- 53:54Speaker 1: of the talent that he has within him. Look, he
- 53:57Speaker 1: did struggle in the first half of Game five, but
- 53:59Speaker 1: then came on strong in the second half. You know,
- 54:01Speaker 1: once they got him going downhill, that second half really
- 54:05Speaker 1: ended up changing for this team. I mean, he's been
- 54:08Speaker 1: through a recent surgery, as we all know. The guy
- 54:12Speaker 1: is just incredibly resilient. Sean, how are you looking at
- 54:16Speaker 1: Joel Embiid and assessing him here in the playoffs and
- 54:19Speaker 1: really what he inevitably means for this team?
- 54:21Speaker 4: Yeah, I think Joelle Embiid will forever be one of
- 54:23Speaker 4: the more misunderstood stars of this league right there. That
- 54:26Speaker 4: I think whenever you think of him, or whenever I
- 54:28Speaker 4: guess the public perception of him, it's all about the
- 54:31Speaker 4: games that he missed, the injuries that he picks up,
- 54:33Speaker 4: when the reality is I think that should be the
- 54:35Speaker 4: inverse of the perception there of look at how much
- 54:37Speaker 4: this guy's battled through. Look at the effort that he
- 54:39Speaker 4: puts to get on the floor. There's not a lot
- 54:41Speaker 4: of players that seventeen days removed from appendix surgery would
- 54:44Speaker 4: be suiting up and playing thirty eight minutes for a
- 54:46Speaker 4: team in a high leverage playoff game, and that's what
- 54:48Speaker 4: Joelle and he did. He just dropped thirty three points
- 54:50Speaker 4: his second game back, and it's pretty absurd how he
- 54:53Speaker 4: can just pick it up and find a way to
- 54:55Speaker 4: really like this team as much as everyone wants to
- 54:57Speaker 4: turn the page and talk about, you know, this is Tyre,
- 55:00Speaker 4: He's Maxis team and all these things. Well, Andbiad is
- 55:02Speaker 4: still one of the top five players in the league
- 55:04Speaker 4: whenever he's close to one hundred percent right there, though
- 55:06Speaker 4: we saw that last night. I think the dude deserves
- 55:08Speaker 4: a ton of credit for even fighting to get on
- 55:10Speaker 4: the floor, and the level that he's playing at is
- 55:12Speaker 4: far better than I could have expected was realistically possible.
- 55:14Speaker 1: I think people need to understand that. And I just
- 55:18Speaker 1: put up for you know, our our those who are
- 55:21Speaker 1: watching on YouTube, and I'll put it up again. You know,
- 55:23Speaker 1: is he misunderstood? You know, like you had just mentioned Sean,
- 55:26Speaker 1: and yes he is. He's going to go down as
- 55:28Speaker 1: one of the most misunderstood players, possibly in NBA history.
- 55:32Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, the battles that he has had to
- 55:34Speaker 1: deal with season after season after season, whether it's health,
- 55:37Speaker 1: whether it's talent on the roster, whether it's you know,
- 55:40Speaker 1: the bench depth, and him having to keep this team
- 55:43Speaker 1: on his shoulders for years and years and years. It
- 55:47Speaker 1: never ceases to amaze me that he'll have moments in
- 55:49Speaker 1: game five where he shows us who he really is
- 55:52Speaker 1: as a player and inevitably as a person too. I just,
- 55:55Speaker 1: I just I think we got two years ago, three
- 55:59Speaker 1: years go, he was the greatest athlete in Philly sports,
- 56:03Speaker 1: and now the narrative with him, it really ticks me off,
- 56:06Speaker 1: to be honest with you, and I'm not sure if
- 56:08Speaker 1: I'm not sure if it takes you off too.
- 56:10Speaker 3: Yeah, no, it absolutely doesn't.
- 56:11Speaker 4: One of the things that I've been like largely critical
- 56:13Speaker 4: of the Sixers organization is how guarded that they are
- 56:16Speaker 4: with a lot of the injury reports with Joel and
- 56:19Speaker 4: sort of the terminologies that they use, I just think
- 56:21Speaker 4: makes everyone look worse. And I think if the full
- 56:24Speaker 4: story was out there for what Joel Embiid has dealt with,
- 56:26Speaker 4: a lot of people would look at him in a
- 56:28Speaker 4: little bit different light light right there, Like I'm talking
- 56:30Speaker 4: about the year after his MVP where the meniscus injury
- 56:33Speaker 4: really sent him on the I guess the peak of
- 56:35Speaker 4: where these injury issues have popped up. We're talking about
- 56:38Speaker 4: him having historic numbers where he's averaging more than a
- 56:40Speaker 4: point per minute and he could only play three quarters
- 56:43Speaker 4: a game, Like the knee would swell up to the
- 56:44Speaker 4: point where, yes, he was checking out largely for blowouts
- 56:47Speaker 4: in that game, but he really didn't have it in him,
- 56:49Speaker 4: Like he couldn't walk after games during that season, and
- 56:51Speaker 4: then he's just suiting up again for the next night.
- 56:53Speaker 4: So he's battled through way more than just about like
- 56:56Speaker 4: any player would be willing to.
- 56:57Speaker 3: And I think if some of that was more publicly
- 56:59Speaker 3: out there, I think.
- 57:00Speaker 4: One day we will get a little bit of Joel
- 57:02Speaker 4: Embiid like expressing all of that, but I think people
- 57:04Speaker 4: don't have any idea what he truly has put himself
- 57:07Speaker 4: through just to get on the floor as frequently as
- 57:09Speaker 4: he possibly can.
- 57:10Speaker 1: Completely agree with you. Leave us a comment below on YouTube.
- 57:13Speaker 1: Let us know what you're thinking about Joel Embiid his
- 57:15Speaker 1: tenure on this team. We'd love to hear from you.
- 57:17Speaker 1: Leave us a comment again on YouTube, And as we're
- 57:20Speaker 1: moving along here with the conversation, I think it's fair
- 57:23Speaker 1: to wonder how different this series may have looked if
- 57:28Speaker 1: they had a healthier version of Tyrese Maxey. To be
- 57:31Speaker 1: honest with you, Sean, I mean, because he's been able
- 57:33Speaker 1: to give the Celtics trouble even with a splint on
- 57:37Speaker 1: for the love of God, I mean, Maxy has still
- 57:40Speaker 1: been able to use his explosiveness. But I do wonder
- 57:43Speaker 1: just how different this series would have been, especially the
- 57:46Speaker 1: first couple of games, like those embarrassing games that you
- 57:48Speaker 1: mentioned earlier, how things would have been with a healthy
- 57:52Speaker 1: Tyrese MAXI what are your thoughts on how Maxie has
- 57:55Speaker 1: performed us for in the series.
- 57:57Speaker 4: Yeah, I definitely fully expect that whenever this season does
- 57:59Speaker 4: a fit and will get a pretty you know, concerning
- 58:02Speaker 4: report of this guy's been dealing with something pretty legitimate
- 58:05Speaker 4: and pretty serious. Right there, you can see like the
- 58:08Speaker 4: panic in his face when like that splint popped off
- 58:10Speaker 4: there after he had a breakaway layup over there in
- 58:12Speaker 4: Game four, That's when one of those moments where it
- 58:14Speaker 4: really clicked to me of like, this dude's definitely not
- 58:17Speaker 4: close to one hundred percent, and you can see it,
- 58:19Speaker 4: like he doesn't look as comfortable, as comfortable and as confident,
- 58:22Speaker 4: especially coming off screens and sort of having that like
- 58:25Speaker 4: short look as a window for a three point shot,
- 58:27Speaker 4: which is sort of the bread and butter of what
- 58:28Speaker 4: tyres does a lot during the regular season. So at
- 58:31Speaker 4: the three shots in the first half of Game four
- 58:34Speaker 4: right there, like you just have to like, this guy
- 58:37Speaker 4: is a dude that is all the talent in the world.
- 58:39Speaker 4: Has really put it together this year, and it really
- 58:41Speaker 4: is disappointing that this is how it's trending. But you
- 58:43Speaker 4: got to give him credit for fighting through and battling
- 58:45Speaker 4: as well, So I'm not quitting on him. On the season.
- 58:47Speaker 4: I do think we'll see Tyrese Max. He still has
- 58:49Speaker 4: some high highs, but he's certainly not the best version
- 58:51Speaker 4: of himself.
- 58:51Speaker 1: No, not at all. It's it's it's so disappointing that
- 58:55Speaker 1: it seems every year the Sixers are in the playoff, Sean,
- 58:58Speaker 1: there's always one injury, now multiple injuries at times that
- 59:02Speaker 1: just take certain players out of what their game is,
- 59:05Speaker 1: and we continue to see it year after year. There's
- 59:08Speaker 1: not much that can really be done about it. Injuries
- 59:10Speaker 1: happen in the NBA, and those teams that do not
- 59:13Speaker 1: have the injury bug are the ones that are usually
- 59:15Speaker 1: able to progress and get a little bit further into
- 59:18Speaker 1: the playoffs. So that being said, we are going to
- 59:20Speaker 1: take a break, folks. When we get back, we've got
- 59:22Speaker 1: a lot more Sixers talk coming your way. Stick with us, right,
- 59:27Speaker 1: We're back with our good friend Sean Bernard. I love
- 59:30Speaker 1: the Eagles mug right there, as he was taking a
- 59:32Speaker 1: little swig. Fantastic And as we keep talking about this
- 59:36Speaker 1: Sixers team here, I just want to kind of get
- 59:39Speaker 1: into some of the players on this team within this
- 59:42Speaker 1: series to let us know how you have been assessing
- 59:46Speaker 1: them throughout this first round. Here and again, folks, we
- 59:49Speaker 1: are recording this on Wednesday, April twenty ninth. By the
- 59:53Speaker 1: time you hear this, who knows sixers might be out
- 59:56Speaker 1: of the playoffs based on how things go here, But
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: I think it's important to assess where these players are
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: at right now within the playoffs and what could potentially
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: be happening in the future as well when we reflect
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: on the end of the season. So let's start with
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: Paul George here. How have you been assessing him throughout
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: this series?
- 1:00:16Speaker 4: Yeah, I think Paul George is gonna pretty consistently be
- 1:00:18Speaker 4: a guy that grades in that B B plus range.
- 1:00:21Speaker 4: For me, that he's never gonna be quite what we
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: kind of hoped would be the case as a max
- 1:00:25Speaker 4: contract dude, Like when you picture that, that's a guy
- 1:00:28Speaker 4: scoring fifty and leading the team in that charge. With
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: all that being said, though, he's still a very helpful
- 1:00:32Speaker 4: player man Like, defensively, I think he's been excellent in
- 1:00:34Speaker 4: this series, going toe to toe with the Jason Tatums
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: and Jaylen Brown. He's really the only player with the
- 1:00:39Speaker 4: size and skill set to be capable of doing that.
- 1:00:41Speaker 4: And a large reason why he's here in Philadelphia is
- 1:00:43Speaker 4: that specific matchup right there. He hasn't attempted more than
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: fourteen field goal attempts in any of these games, that's
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: a little bit on the lower side of what I
- 1:00:50Speaker 4: would prefer, especially when you talk about the injuries that
- 1:00:53Speaker 4: Joel andb and Tyreese Max he have been dealing with
- 1:00:55Speaker 4: right there.
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: But he's been efficient to those opportunities.
- 1:00:58Speaker 4: He's consistently a plus on both sides of the So
- 1:01:00Speaker 4: he's a little bit underwhelming relative to what the expectations are,
- 1:01:04Speaker 4: but largely he's been very effective and very good for
- 1:01:06Speaker 4: this team.
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: I would say, all right, what about VJ Edgecumbe, I
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: mean little quiet in game five? How are you assessing
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: VJ Edgecomb here in the series?
- 1:01:14Speaker 4: I'll go be minus for VJ Edgecombe right there. So far,
- 1:01:17Speaker 4: the biggest takeaway coming into this series, or the biggest
- 1:01:20Speaker 4: positive long term takeaway, was the experience that he's going
- 1:01:23Speaker 4: to gain from this.
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: There's been the moments where he really struggled. He obviously was.
- 1:01:27Speaker 4: Unbelievable in the one game where he looked like the
- 1:01:29Speaker 4: best player on the floor going toe to toe with
- 1:01:31Speaker 4: Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown right there. He's not afraid
- 1:01:34Speaker 4: of the moment by any means, but there is a
- 1:01:35Speaker 4: difference in playoff intensity and we've seen him sort of
- 1:01:38Speaker 4: be swallowed up by that for stretchers right there. I
- 1:01:40Speaker 4: thought the Game five performance was probably what I love
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: the most, and I know it didn't shine in the
- 1:01:44Speaker 4: box score. But my biggest praise for VJ this year
- 1:01:47Speaker 4: is he's become the glue to this Sixers team. You
- 1:01:49Speaker 4: can feel a variety of roles and it can kind
- 1:01:51Speaker 4: of shift that on a night to night basis, and
- 1:01:53Speaker 4: I thought he put that on display in the most
- 1:01:54Speaker 4: recent win right there.
- 1:01:55Speaker 3: So I love VJ.
- 1:01:56Speaker 4: I think it's gonna be great for him in the
- 1:01:58Speaker 4: long run. He's definitely had some concern learning stretches where
- 1:02:00Speaker 4: he hasn't quite delivered right there, But I think that's
- 1:02:03Speaker 4: as expected for.
- 1:02:03Speaker 3: A twenty year old kid playing a major role in
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: the playoffs.
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: Absolutely, dude, you're three year four? Oh yeah, Oh my gosh,
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: I cannot wait. I cannot wait. All right, let's go
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: to a den Bona, like, what have your thoughts been
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: with him as you assessed? And again, there are certain
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: expectations for some of these players, and we know what
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: those expectations are for the most part, But how would
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: you assess a den Bona at this point in the series.
- 1:02:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's been a mixed bag.
- 1:02:28Speaker 4: For them, and we've sort of seen Nick Nurse lean
- 1:02:31Speaker 4: more heavily on Drummond is the series his progress, which
- 1:02:33Speaker 4: I think you can critique pretty strongly from the standpoint
- 1:02:36Speaker 4: of Drummond has no ability to get out to the
- 1:02:38Speaker 4: perimeter from a defensive standpoint, and they just want to
- 1:02:40Speaker 4: stretch the floor. That Nicola Vucevic first Drummond matchup is
- 1:02:43Speaker 4: not one that I think is favorable. But Ramona specifically,
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: the flashes are there and when it all clicks, it
- 1:02:48Speaker 4: looks awesome, like you see the vision of him switching
- 1:02:50Speaker 4: blocking shots at a loud level.
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: But there's also the dumb fouls. The moving screens drive
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: me crazy with him.
- 1:02:55Speaker 4: So if I'm to slap a grade on it, I'll
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: go see plus to be a little bit above average
- 1:02:59Speaker 4: right there. But I think the short answer is like,
- 1:03:02Speaker 4: neither Drummond or Boner are exactly what you would hope
- 1:03:05Speaker 4: for in a backup center role.
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: All right, very good, And to close out this particular
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: part of the discussion here, Kelly Ubrad Junior, what are
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: your assessments on him during this series?
- 1:03:14Speaker 4: I'll go be minus for Kelly that I've largely been
- 1:03:17Speaker 4: a Kelly Youubrad junior supporter. I do appreciate he's a
- 1:03:20Speaker 4: hard hat guy. He gives you what he's got. This
- 1:03:22Speaker 4: is a series where I think he has hurt the
- 1:03:23Speaker 4: Sixers for stretches, particularly on getting lost on the defensive end.
- 1:03:27Speaker 4: And that's probably the biggest, like legitimate gripe with his
- 1:03:29Speaker 4: game is he's not a high IQ basketball player that
- 1:03:31Speaker 4: he doesn't have that sense of making you know, the
- 1:03:34Speaker 4: rotation before the ball is there, or making sure he
- 1:03:36Speaker 4: makes the right read. I think he's been lost a
- 1:03:38Speaker 4: couple of times that have created some open three point
- 1:03:40Speaker 4: looks on the defensive end, but he still brings it.
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: Man.
- 1:03:42Speaker 4: He does a nice job of drawing offensive fouls when
- 1:03:46Speaker 4: he gets downhill and just attacks the room with physicality.
- 1:03:48Speaker 4: It's some of the Sixers' most effective offense right there.
- 1:03:51Speaker 3: So I like Ubra.
- 1:03:51Speaker 4: I've been overly sympathetic and I guess praising him more
- 1:03:54Speaker 4: than probably the general vicinity there.
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: But he has his flaws as a players, no doubt.
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: Absolutely absolutely, It's going to be in interesting to see
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: when the season is eventually over at whatever point, that's
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: going to be what this bench is going to look
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: like and what the talent is going to be and
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: I guess to close us out here. You know, if
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: the Sixers do not advance, which I think a lot
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: of us believe will inevitably happen when you look at
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: the talent on these teams and you look at how
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: both teams are inevitably coached, I'm wondering, you know, what,
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: what do you think the first couple dominoes to fall
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: with regard to the team the organization might actually be
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: sean I mean, is it maybe Nick Nurse out the door,
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: maybe Daryl Mory being let go? Perhaps? I mean, what
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: are your thoughts on where the first where the first
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: few dominoes may may fall.
- 1:04:41Speaker 4: Yeah, it's gonna be really interesting because I think each
- 1:04:43Speaker 4: of these guys have very unique conversations, their unique outlooks
- 1:04:47Speaker 4: on it. Like I personally entered the series with the
- 1:04:50Speaker 4: mindset that the context of how this series goes matters
- 1:04:53Speaker 4: more than just the raw results. That if they lose
- 1:04:56Speaker 4: in game six right here, it's one thing. If they
- 1:04:58Speaker 4: you know, if they were swept in game four, I
- 1:05:00Speaker 4: would be kind of change the perception a little bit.
- 1:05:02Speaker 4: But to start with Nick Nurse, I'm a guy that
- 1:05:04Speaker 4: has been more critical of Nick Nurse than most I
- 1:05:06Speaker 4: would prefer that he is fired. With that said, I
- 1:05:08Speaker 4: think he's got a very legitimate case to walk into
- 1:05:10Speaker 4: the front offense. Say, look, I dealt with the twenty
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: five game suspension for Paul George. I signed up here
- 1:05:15Speaker 4: to maximizd well embiids skill set, and he's been here
- 1:05:17Speaker 4: for less than half the games. But look at all
- 1:05:19Speaker 4: that I've dealt with, and still Matt found a way
- 1:05:21Speaker 4: to get this team above five hundred record into the
- 1:05:23Speaker 4: playoffs and win two games against the Celtics, whoever the case.
- 1:05:26Speaker 4: So I think he's got grounds to stand on with that.
- 1:05:29Speaker 4: I think he's honestly coached a pretty good series in
- 1:05:31Speaker 4: this right here. But I do think there's not like
- 1:05:33Speaker 4: a thing that he's maximized or that he has as
- 1:05:35Speaker 4: an identity, and I don't think I think he's a
- 1:05:37Speaker 4: little bit of a product of the environment for the
- 1:05:39Speaker 4: success that he has had at the NBA level with
- 1:05:42Speaker 4: KWHI Leonard the biggest story, right, Yeah, I think it's
- 1:05:44Speaker 4: more likely than not that Nick Nurse is fired, and
- 1:05:47Speaker 4: I think he's probably okay with that at the end
- 1:05:49Speaker 4: of the day, that he's just as frustrated as that
- 1:05:51Speaker 4: everyone with that for Darryl Mory, it's been kind of
- 1:05:53Speaker 4: the league's worst secret right here, of all the Bob
- 1:05:56Speaker 4: Meyers influence on this organization and the Harris Splitzer conversation.
- 1:05:59Speaker 4: You see Bob Meyer sitting courtside at like a lot
- 1:06:02Speaker 4: of sixers game, like I've double digit times that I've
- 1:06:05Speaker 4: seen him there this year. I do think there's probably
- 1:06:07Speaker 4: a pretty likely case that Darryl Mory's out the door
- 1:06:10Speaker 4: as well, And then the Joel Embiid conversation has to
- 1:06:12Speaker 4: be had as well that I do think we're closer
- 1:06:14Speaker 4: to that breaking point than has ever been the case
- 1:06:16Speaker 4: in the past. It was interesting to me to see
- 1:06:18Speaker 4: the way that Embiid answer the questions about his relationship
- 1:06:21Speaker 4: with management after his first came back, and to his credit,
- 1:06:24Speaker 4: he took the high road sort of ignored that. But
- 1:06:26Speaker 4: it does feel like there's a bit more breaking there
- 1:06:28Speaker 4: than behind the scenes. But then again, if you're going
- 1:06:30Speaker 4: to change the management overall, maybe all of a sudden
- 1:06:33Speaker 4: that relationship starts to repair itself. So there's gonna be
- 1:06:35Speaker 4: a lot of conversations, a lot of dominos. I think
- 1:06:38Speaker 4: each of these have sort of I guess, like you know,
- 1:06:40Speaker 4: relationships with each other and how things trend. But there's
- 1:06:43Speaker 4: gonna be some major turnover this year pretty much. Anyway
- 1:06:45Speaker 4: you cut it is how I look at it.
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: Absolutely. Look as we talk on this podcast show and
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: have for a number of years, relationships in sports. It
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: determines whether or not teams and players and coaches fail
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: or they succeed at the end of the day, So
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: that'd be said. He is Sean Bernard from Fox Sports, Phillies,
