- 0:00We're here, toned it down, and not aspirational.
- 0:05We're sharing this podcast, Little Calabby,
- 0:07for the first Why Not Wins Day, and a very long time.
- 0:11I kept getting text messages from my friends
- 0:14who are on TikTok, and be like, are you okay?
- 0:17Like, what's going on?
- 0:19Did you see this TikTok?
- 0:20So I went on there, and I binge watched.
- 0:23I was like, she's good.
- 0:24She needs to be an investigative reporter.
- 0:27So we're going to have a conversation.
- 0:30I'm actually like freaking out right now.
- 0:32Truly my dream come true.
- 0:34What do you think, like, made toned up
- 0:36such a success in the early days?
- 0:38Authenticity.
- 0:39Like, we literally were friends who met at the gym,
- 0:42and had a passion for fitness.
- 0:44Making fitness accessible to women in a way that was like fun,
- 0:48and like, girly and silly, and not like this serious,
- 0:51like, gay-kept kind of vibe was really special.
- 0:54Are you down to play a little TIEU themed game?
- 0:57It's called Feel the Burn.
- 0:58And it's inspired by all the times
- 1:00I felt the burn during a TIEU workout.
- 1:02Having another surprise.
- 1:02Yeah.
- 1:03There was this rumor that TIEU,
- 1:06you weren't actually one of the people who started it.
- 1:08You were hired as a Craigslist model.
- 1:11Can you clear this up, please?
- 1:13And welcome back to another and tone it down Tuesday.
- 1:19Oh my gosh, this conversation today
- 1:22has me like sweating in the armpits,
- 1:25like literally sweating in the armpits,
- 1:28but I'm not even gonna give too much away
- 1:30because I love this conversation with Hannah Aaron Brown.
- 1:35You may know her from the TikTok toned up lore.
- 1:40We tell the story in this podcast.
- 1:42It is a Wine Up Wednesday podcast,
- 1:44but it's coming out on a toned down Tuesday podcast.
- 1:47We had a really good conversation,
- 1:50and we share the story of how we got connected,
- 1:53how I reached out to her when my friends were texting me.
- 1:57But we discussed so much about toned up lore.
- 2:01We discussed about not giving up on your dreams,
- 2:04about building something that makes women feel better
- 2:06about redefining your relationship with exercise.
- 2:10And I know you're gonna love this podcast.
- 2:14Definitely made me so nervous filming it,
- 2:19but definitely made me so happy filming it at the same time.
- 2:23So number one, share this with anyone
- 2:27that needs to hear it.
- 2:28I have so much gratitude for this community.
- 2:32So thank you, and also don't forget,
- 2:35you can go to SpeakPipe.com slash Karina Dawn
- 2:38to send me your questions.
- 2:41Let me hear from you.
- 2:42My gratitude is just, I'm so overwhelmed right now,
- 2:47doing everything and also just so you know,
- 2:50for the toned up app,
- 2:52we have a lot of new features coming.
- 2:54We are doing another shoot here in Palm Springs,
- 2:56where I am right now,
- 2:58we're doing that in a few weeks for your summer challenge.
- 3:02So, girls, we are back.
- 3:06We're here, toned down, and oh my gosh, and not aspirational.
- 3:11We're sharing this podcast, little collabi,
- 3:14for the first Why Not Wins Day.
- 3:17Oh, listen to that.
- 3:19I know.
- 3:21First Why Not Wins Day is the first time
- 3:25I've ever been to a show in Palm Springs.
- 3:29I've never been to a show in Palm Springs.
- 3:33Oh, first Why Not Wins Day in a very long time.
- 3:37Listen, never give up on your dreams, guys,
- 3:39because I can't believe I'm doing
- 3:40a Why Not Wins Day with you Karina,
- 3:42I'm actually like freaking out right now.
- 3:44I haven't stopped smiling since we saw each other today.
- 3:47Okay, so little backup here.
- 3:51Hannah, I met through social, obviously.
- 3:55So, you know I'm not on TikTok.
- 3:57No.
- 3:58And then I kept getting text messages from my friends
- 4:00who are on TikTok, and be like,
- 4:02are you okay?
- 4:03Like, what's going on?
- 4:06No, even Afra, Munchool's manager,
- 4:09it's like, hey girl, and I called her,
- 4:11and she's like, did you see this TikTok?
- 4:13And I toned it up the floor.
- 4:14I'm like, I don't know.
- 4:16And so I went on there, and I binge watched.
- 4:19And so did Desiree, who's behind the camera,
- 4:21her head of marketing.
- 4:23We're like, wow, okay.
- 4:25Number one, I was like, she's good.
- 4:28Even Bobby was like, she's good at this.
- 4:30She needs to be an investigative reporter.
- 4:33Oh my God, thank you.
- 4:34I know, you did call Bobby, but he's a big fan.
- 4:36Oh my God, did I call him a douche?
- 4:39Someone, someone in the comments did, yeah.
- 4:42But we do have a call to Bobby later.
- 4:43No, I can't wait.
- 4:44So anyways, after like 20 something episodes,
- 4:49I messaged you on TikTok.
- 4:51I freaked out.
- 4:53You did.
- 4:54And I was like, hey, do you wanna talk?
- 4:58I was just interested because there's all of these questions
- 5:02and so many things that over the years have popped up
- 5:06that I have an answer, or maybe couldn't answer.
- 5:10And so then we had a secret meetup.
- 5:13It was so fun in LA when I was here last time
- 5:16and had a glass of wine or two, and brought to know each other.
- 5:20It was so fun.
- 5:21I was like so surprised and happy to hear from you.
- 5:24And also, I was like, what about us
- 5:26that she was able to watch like a bajillion videos
- 5:29of like me like picking apart everything,
- 5:32like you and Kat and tone it up.
- 5:34But also like after listening to your book,
- 5:36I was like, of course she's brave enough to do that.
- 5:37You've done a lot of hard things in your life.
- 5:40Thank you.
- 5:40You're welcome.
- 5:41Yeah, it was a little nerve wrecking,
- 5:43but nothing I haven't experienced in all of my life
- 5:45or the past 16 years.
- 5:48So here we are, because at that time we met for happy hour,
- 5:52it's like shall we podcast together?
- 5:54So we're gonna have a conversation.
- 5:57I'm gonna let you take the reins.
- 5:59Oh my God, we're gonna sip some wine here.
- 6:02This is truly my dream come true.
- 6:04Like I manifest at this, I think.
- 6:06Yeah.
- 6:07Let's go.
- 6:09Okay, can I ask first and foremost,
- 6:11a lot of people, when I made these videos,
- 6:13there was this rumor that TIEU,
- 6:15you weren't actually one of the people who started it.
- 6:18Your business partner and her husband started it
- 6:20and you were hired as a Craigslist model.
- 6:22You have been a fitness model before.
- 6:24However, I know the truth,
- 6:26but can you clear this up, please?
- 6:28Yes.
- 6:28So the Craigslist rumor was our first employee
- 6:34was hired off of Craigslist.
- 6:36So the first time I heard that rumor was years and years ago,
- 6:39how me and Kat didn't found the company together.
- 6:42There was some rumors of private equity
- 6:45wanted to create, tone it up.
- 6:47It is completely false.
- 6:49And then there was other rumors
- 6:51that I was hired on Craigslist.
- 6:53So when you put that on TikTok lore,
- 6:55I went to my attorney of 16 years ago.
- 6:58I'm not gonna say his name,
- 6:59but he is the attorney for Kendrick Lamar.
- 7:01He was back then.
- 7:02Oh wow, yeah.
- 7:03And I messaged him and I was like,
- 7:07can you send me the articles of organization
- 7:10for tone it up in 2009?
- 7:13And he immediately within 30 minutes
- 7:15was like, no questions asked.
- 7:16Here you go.
- 7:18That is gorgeous.
- 7:19So you have it in print.
- 7:21You have proof that you are a 50, 50, 50.
- 7:24Hell yeah.
- 7:25No one else.
- 7:26Hell yeah.
- 7:27I will show you.
- 7:29I can't wait to see how I'm like,
- 7:30these ancient texts are not ancient.
- 7:33Not that long ago.
- 7:35What do you think like made tone it up
- 7:36such a success in the early days?
- 7:39Offenticity, like we literally were friends
- 7:43who met at the gym.
- 7:43That's the other thing.
- 7:44We actually met at the equinox in Manhattan Beach.
- 7:48I was newly single, moved from Marina Del Rey,
- 7:52to Manhattan Beach and was just working out all the time
- 7:56while getting ready for shoots and stuff
- 7:58and she was a trainer there.
- 8:01And we met and just became friends
- 8:04and had a passion for fitness
- 8:06and wanting to really offer something to women
- 8:11that could make them feel better
- 8:12and that has never changed.
- 8:14Or either of us.
- 8:16Through the years.
- 8:17Damn.
- 8:18When did it like click?
- 8:20Was there a moment where you guys were like, holy shit?
- 8:22We've like created something really special
- 8:24that's growing like insanely fast?
- 8:26Or was it sort of like baby steps
- 8:28and then one day you were like,
- 8:29you looked around and you're like, damn.
- 8:31So we were in the beginning of YouTube
- 8:33and Instagram wasn't even around yet.
- 8:35I don't think, right?
- 8:36Yeah, I think it came in like 2012.
- 8:39Okay, so three years in.
- 8:40Yeah.
- 8:41So with my background,
- 8:43I was traveling the world as a triathlete,
- 8:45a host, sports and fitness modeling,
- 8:48certified trainer, all these things.
- 8:50And then she was on YouTube
- 8:52with another company at the time.
- 8:54So she actually introduced me to YouTube.
- 8:56I was like, isn't that like a music platform?
- 8:59I was like way back in the day.
- 9:00So we just decided to start making music videos.
- 9:05So we decided to do music videos.
- 9:08But like they are music videos to watch them a million times.
- 9:11I love them so much.
- 9:13I mean, I also feel like just making fitness accessible
- 9:15to women in a way that was like fun and like girly
- 9:19and silly and not like this serious
- 9:21like gig kept kind of I was really special.
- 9:24Yeah, and that's important to point out
- 9:26because myself even to this day,
- 9:29I'm a little clumsy, a little awkward.
- 9:32I'm not that like same.
- 9:34And that's okay.
- 9:36Yeah.
- 9:37And so you shouldn't be made fun of for that
- 9:39or just if I work out and when I do, I want to have fun.
- 9:42I want to enjoy what I'm doing.
- 9:44I want to do it with friends,
- 9:46even in the trailer for Toner Down.
- 9:47I mentioned how like the best conversations happen
- 9:51before and after the workout.
- 9:53And that's how it's always been for Toner Down.
- 9:55And I think it finally clicked within like a year
- 9:58where women were like, wait, I want to have that relationship.
- 10:03I want to make friends through fitness
- 10:05because that's our similar interests, right?
- 10:09So meeting new friends through fitness is great
- 10:13versus, you know, especially now getting older.
- 10:18Having like a common interest.
- 10:19Yeah.
- 10:20Yeah.
- 10:21That's what I love to do even in Austin.
- 10:23So I think you want to meet up at the gym.
- 10:24Do you want to go for a walk on Lady Bird Lake?
- 10:27It's just a nice way to get together with people.
- 10:29I love that.
- 10:30Yeah, I feel like being able to laugh through a workout.
- 10:34Like I mess something up, like be able to laugh at myself
- 10:37and have fun.
- 10:38Like I felt like that energy.
- 10:39I hadn't seen it in other fitness spaces
- 10:41when I first found you guys.
- 10:43Like I was like a P90X girl.
- 10:44And like I love and light to Tony Horton.
- 10:47It was intense.
- 10:48I did do P90X also.
- 10:49Who was the other one through Beachbody, Charlene Johnson?
- 10:52Yes.
- 10:53Did you do turbo jam?
- 10:54No.
- 10:55Should I try it?
- 10:57Yeah, I mean, this is like 20 years ago
- 11:00that she probably put those out.
- 11:02But I loved P90X's freaking crushed me.
- 11:06But hardcore.
- 11:07They're still toned up moves though
- 11:09that like I would say I'm more fit now
- 11:11than I was in like 2014.
- 11:13But like there are certain moves that you guys do
- 11:15where I'm like, I can never do it.
- 11:17Like a burpee, like I can't.
- 11:19Oh, I don't do burpees anymore.
- 11:20I don't do jump tucks and I don't do burpees.
- 11:22I don't know how to do them.
- 11:24I've never physically been able to do that.
- 11:26How?
- 11:26Yeah.
- 11:27So when did you find toned up?
- 11:29I think like 2014, 2014.
- 11:31Like I just graduated college
- 11:32and my big sister showed me to you guys.
- 11:35Should you guys to me?
- 11:36And I was like, oh my god, this is amazing.
- 11:39And then I just was obsessed.
- 11:41Why?
- 11:41I looked up to you guys a lot.
- 11:43Like I felt like you guys had this like really cool
- 11:44like big sister vibe where I was just like,
- 11:46oh, I want to be like the fun bubbly girls
- 11:48who like living California and wear like cool gym outfits
- 11:51and like have fun working out.
- 11:52And also like I had never had a relationship to exercise
- 11:55that didn't feel like it was like a punishment
- 11:56or like seeking out a certain appearance.
- 11:59And like, yeah, obviously you guys are snatched like
- 12:03but it was more than that.
- 12:05It was like increasing your mood and yeah, connection.
- 12:08Like all of that really resonated with me.
- 12:10Yeah, I mean, and we're talking so long ago.
- 12:13Well, almost a decade that you discovered toned up.
- 12:17I feel like there was a shift.
- 12:19I mean, obviously we love looking great
- 12:21and feeling great.
- 12:22Yeah, you know, the aesthetic, but also for me,
- 12:24as I've gotten older, it's more about like how you feel
- 12:28mentally, but we didn't realize or weren't talking about it
- 12:31back in the day of like, why do I work out?
- 12:33Oh my gosh, how do I feel in those endorphins?
- 12:37I think that was kind of the thing that we didn't realize
- 12:39because we were so young.
- 12:40Not only did we like to feel good,
- 12:42but mentally it just made us like have so much energy
- 12:46and creative.
- 12:48And so there's so many different aspects
- 12:49that we've learned over the years of why we work out.
- 12:52Yeah, and making it like accessible to people like the fact
- 12:55that I could move a coffee table out of the way
- 12:56and get a workout in was like that was special.
- 12:58Like you didn't have to buy a million things of equipment
- 13:01to like be able to do all the workouts, you know?
- 13:04Did you ever have imposter syndrome, like as an entrepreneur?
- 13:07Because you find it toned up when you were what, like 27?
- 13:09Yes, 27.
- 13:10That's so young to be like, oh, I just casually owned this
- 13:13like multi-million dollar brand.
- 13:15Well, I mean, it took a while to build.
- 13:18I think one of the things for me,
- 13:21always even with like the big silence
- 13:22which we can talk about is it's always purpose driven
- 13:26and never financially driven.
- 13:29But when I was a kid,
- 13:32I always was like open it like doing yard sales
- 13:35or having a kitchen in my basement
- 13:38where I would make mud into mud pies
- 13:41and serve it to my parents.
- 13:42Like I always was like doing something
- 13:44or after school I would have teaching curriculums
- 13:48and teach to my imaginary students.
- 13:50I love that.
- 13:51We will still do that.
- 13:53Like am I crazy?
- 13:54I would like to talk to my, I imagine me
- 13:57in my basement in Indiana.
- 13:58Yeah, after school with a chalkboard
- 14:01talking to my students and like, am I crazy?
- 14:03No, you were literally,
- 14:04but you were manifesting your life now
- 14:06which is like you're a public speaker,
- 14:08you're a leader, like all these things.
- 14:10Yeah.
- 14:11Are you into like astrology?
- 14:12Have you looked into that?
- 14:13I'm not hugely, no.
- 14:14I'm an Aries, can you tell me something?
- 14:15Oh my God, oh my God, about being an Aries.
- 14:17Well, I'm a Leo, so we like vibe.
- 14:19Okay.
- 14:19Yeah, I don't know a ton about Aries.
- 14:20I'm married to one too.
- 14:22How do you?
- 14:23But I feel like Aries get shit done.
- 14:25Like when you guys like decide to do something,
- 14:27you're like, get the fuck out of my way, I'm doing this.
- 14:30I would say for me, I am not afraid of a challenge.
- 14:36You know, my background, you know, growing up
- 14:39and been through it all already.
- 14:41Like what could be worse?
- 14:42I'm not afraid of something not being successful
- 14:45of someone judging you.
- 14:47I mean, we were just before recording.
- 14:49We sometimes people judging us can hurt.
- 14:51But yeah, you're a human, it's okay.
- 14:54Yeah, I've got that fire in me for sure.
- 14:56Hell yeah.
- 14:58Is there like a piece of advice that you would give
- 15:00to young entrepreneurs who are maybe afraid
- 15:02of like taking a big swing the way you did?
- 15:06I know we'd go back to what I just said.
- 15:07Like take the risk because what do you have to lose?
- 15:12Back then we didn't raise any money.
- 15:14I feel like in today's world, a lot of brands
- 15:19raise money and build the brand
- 15:21and then try to build community
- 15:22where we were always, let's just build a community
- 15:24because this is going to be fun.
- 15:26I mean, we are even like, we could on YouTube
- 15:28get some like Google ads.
- 15:30Yeah, it was like never, it was just like,
- 15:33let's do something fun and bring people together.
- 15:36And it's a very different world in people building brands,
- 15:40say there's a nutrition company,
- 15:41they build the nutrition company
- 15:42and then try to spend money on marketing and ad sales
- 15:46to expand that.
- 15:48And we never did that.
- 15:50And even to this day, still not doing it.
- 15:53I probably should because it is a different world these days.
- 15:56But yeah, it's always just going to organic.
- 15:59That's so cool.
- 15:59Well, Anne, I do feel like TIU girlies, like we stick around.
- 16:03We want to know what you're up to.
- 16:04We're like so invested in the brand
- 16:06because we found you during like formative years, you know,
- 16:09which is really special.
- 16:11I have a question for you going back to TikTok,
- 16:13which I know you're not super active on.
- 16:15I'm going to get there yet.
- 16:16Yeah, just wait.
- 16:18Okay.
- 16:19I'm going to start dancing.
- 16:21Yeah, please.
- 16:21We need it.
- 16:22But like there are so many,
- 16:24maybe see this on Instagram too.
- 16:25There's so many social media trends around like women's fitness
- 16:27being like, you have to do Pilates
- 16:29if you want to be built this way or like lifting makes you bulky
- 16:31or like running spikes to your cortisol.
- 16:33As someone who's like been in the wellness space for so long,
- 16:37what do you think about all of that on the internet?
- 16:40I think you do whatever makes you feel good.
- 16:44For myself, I've gone through phases of being a triathlete.
- 16:48Even Bobby has been signed up for an Iron Man
- 16:52that he's doing in April.
- 16:53I'm like, I'm good.
- 16:54I'm good.
- 16:55Even today he texted me this morning.
- 16:57He's like, I signed up for a 10K in Austin on April 12th
- 16:59or something.
- 17:00You want to join me?
- 17:01I was like, no, no.
- 17:02We're like, love you, babe, but good luck.
- 17:05You know, I've gone through my triath on stage.
- 17:07I've gone through my yoga stage.
- 17:09I've gone through lifting.
- 17:10I've gone through hit.
- 17:12And I'm currently in my walk and weightlifting stage.
- 17:15And then of course, meditation, which is really important.
- 17:18I did that this morning.
- 17:19I feel like I'm in LA right now and I lived here for 20 years
- 17:22and then I'm back where I get very anxious being here.
- 17:27And so this morning I had to sit myself down
- 17:30like this little candle and just breathe.
- 17:32So I'm in my strength, walk outside, meditate stage.
- 17:37That's a gorgeous life.
- 17:39How long have you been meditating for again?
- 17:42Gosh, I introduced it to tone it up about in like 2019 maybe.
- 17:49We didn't have it in the app at first
- 17:51because some people thought it was like two woo-woo.
- 17:53But now it's like so mainstream.
- 17:56But I've been doing it for probably 15 years.
- 17:59That's the thing.
- 18:00I feel like you're so ahead of the curve in that way
- 18:03because I think also like putting fitness and mindfulness
- 18:06together.
- 18:07I feel like a lot of other brands just focus on fitness
- 18:10or like if you want to look this way,
- 18:12you have to do this way.
- 18:12It's almost coming from this like restrictive place
- 18:15as opposed to like you said, like doing what feels good
- 18:17and kind of like thinking and booming as like a gift to yourself.
- 18:19Yeah.
- 18:20It's whatever makes me feel good and motivates me.
- 18:23Yeah, period.
- 18:25Are there any like TIEU hacks that like to this day
- 18:28you swear by I feel like I want to feel really hot
- 18:30for this thing I have coming up?
- 18:32TIEU hacks.
- 18:33I don't know, bring some up from the old days.
- 18:35I'm like, I'm like, I love the five day detox
- 18:40and the seven days.
- 18:40I know that.
- 18:41Those are fucking amazing.
- 18:43I put apple cider vinegar in like a huge stand like up
- 18:45every day, which is like, I literally feel like it makes me
- 18:48hotter.
- 18:48I do love apple cider vinegar.
- 18:50I was gonna ask, did you have to train yourself to like it
- 18:52or did you always like, can I mess with it?
- 18:54I was doing apple cider vinegar pre-T at you.
- 18:58You're like you're an OG ACV like it was post like meals
- 19:03and stuff at that time.
- 19:04And I actually introduced cat to apple cider vinegar
- 19:07when the first time she did it, she was like disgusted.
- 19:10But then you realize it just helps.
- 19:12Even when I go to any doctors or they're like,
- 19:16do you do apple cider vinegar?
- 19:17And I'm like, absolutely, and in time.
- 19:19So it just makes me feel good for digestion.
- 19:22That's it.
- 19:23Yeah, it just keeps everything moving.
- 19:24I want to be moving.
- 19:25Yeah, it's just going to be moving in all the ways.
- 19:29You announced that you bought back toned it up in December.
- 19:32How has it been?
- 19:34How is this like first month of having that information
- 19:36out there been?
- 19:38Incredible.
- 19:39Ah, my heart.
- 19:41I was losing sleep.
- 19:45It was a six month negotiation for that one.
- 19:48And then the six months prior,
- 19:50there was a different deal being negotiated.
- 19:52So it was like a year of like lawyers every day,
- 19:54which is extremely exhausting.
- 19:56So then I wanted to give myself a time to breathe
- 20:00because everyone that is close to me was like,
- 20:02well, what's your plan?
- 20:03What are you doing?
- 20:05Like, can I just breathe for once?
- 20:07Like, this is so special to me.
- 20:10I want to experience this feeling before I announce it.
- 20:14So I think it was September.
- 20:17That September October, maybe October,
- 20:21that the deal was actually done.
- 20:24And then I announced it in December.
- 20:25Oh, my God.
- 20:27That's your major.
- 20:29And so in between that time, I was reaching out to all the trainers.
- 20:33Yeah.
- 20:33Who are in the current New Year, New T.I.U. major.
- 20:36And I'm a very shy person, actually.
- 20:39And for me to just be like, should I text them?
- 20:43And everyone's like, what's up?
- 20:45Good to hear from you.
- 20:46Yeah.
- 20:47And then get on the phone with everyone.
- 20:49And then Steph, Tori and China and Christina,
- 20:53I was like, you don't have to tell me an answer today.
- 20:55You can call me to that fof.
- 20:58Yeah.
- 20:59And but within 24 hours,
- 21:01each of them called me back and were like, I'm so in.
- 21:06I hard.
- 21:07That mean the first episode of Tone It Down,
- 21:09I like made my heart so happy to just hear all of y'all
- 21:11like keaking together.
- 21:13Yeah, it was so fun.
- 21:14And they flew out to Austin to do the shoot.
- 21:16It was like time had not passed.
- 21:19And actually, China and Steph are coming here tomorrow
- 21:22to do a longer version, solar versions of the podcast.
- 21:25Oh, my God.
- 21:26Yeah, you probably.
- 21:27I can't wait.
- 21:28I'm a subscriber, obviously.
- 21:29No, I can't wait to listen.
- 21:32So you founded the big silence, too, like podcast foundation.
- 21:36It's also the title of your memoir.
- 21:39What was it like shifting from being like smile?
- 21:41You kind of talk about this in your book, too,
- 21:42being like the smiley girls on the beach
- 21:44and then kind of pivoting to being just this very open,
- 21:47vulnerable, mental health advocate.
- 21:50I felt like it was necessary for myself
- 21:54to be more authentic to myself.
- 21:57Because in founding Tone It Up,
- 21:59we had a discussion of no one can know about your past.
- 22:03There's such a stigma around it.
- 22:05And then I was just feeling icky, not being me.
- 22:10And I'm like, well, if I'm going through this
- 22:12and feeling this way, and I experienced this,
- 22:14who else within the community or outside the community
- 22:18who wants to be a part of it is like, wait, me, too.
- 22:21And it was another scary thing.
- 22:23I do a lot of scary things.
- 22:26And it was actually incredible once I released the book,
- 22:31which took me five years to write.
- 22:33Yeah, because I was doing a billion other things, too.
- 22:35And so many people came forward.
- 22:38And even still, audio book came out.
- 22:41People keep coming on me, like, oh my gosh,
- 22:43my brother, my sister, I am this way.
- 22:45And I was like, this is coming full circle.
- 22:48And as I grow the importance of fitness, mental health,
- 22:53physical health, meditation, everything,
- 22:55I think it's something that we need to openly discuss
- 22:57with each other so that we can live our fullest life.
- 23:01I agree.
- 23:02And also, if the like mission statement of tone it up
- 23:05is to empower women, I think you being open and vulnerable
- 23:08is empowering women in a different way.
- 23:10Because you're making it.
- 23:11You're removing the stigma and the shame.
- 23:13You talk about it, too.
- 23:14I was listening to your podcast, stay with your dad.
- 23:16Oh my gosh.
- 23:17He's so adorable.
- 23:19Oh my gosh.
- 23:20You're going to make his day.
- 23:22And I think, I don't know if it's that one.
- 23:25I was on a walk today.
- 23:26I was just listening to your podcast,
- 23:28something you were talking about going on medication
- 23:30or something, and your new therapist.
- 23:32How's that going?
- 23:33Oh my gosh, obsessed.
- 23:34Cryed immediately when I saw her face
- 23:36because I was like, I just need someone to talk to.
- 23:38But it was the best.
- 23:39Yeah.
- 23:40I think it's important you talk about it, too,
- 23:42and there's no shame in whatever is going on.
- 23:45I'm like, yeah, some days I'm like, give me those nits.
- 23:49Yeah, hand them over.
- 23:51I mean, it's also interesting how the fitness and wellness space,
- 23:54how those conversations have evolved since 2009.
- 23:57And we're like back then, I think it wasn't talked about as much.
- 24:01And so I can understand why, like, as a fitness brand,
- 24:03it was like, well, we don't really need to go there.
- 24:05And now it's like, I think it just adds to the experience
- 24:08of investing in you as a founder
- 24:11and everything you have going on.
- 24:12And it makes other people feel less alone.
- 24:15Yeah, I love it.
- 24:17So you talked about like in your book
- 24:19and like on your podcasts, growing into yourself,
- 24:22and getting better at sort of like establishing boundaries,
- 24:24like in your life.
- 24:25And I was kind of curious, what has that journey been like for you,
- 24:28like in your personal life and as a business owner?
- 24:31I had no boundaries until 2017.
- 24:36We both had to just, like, side take that in.
- 24:38Living life without boundaries, without saying no,
- 24:43without being like, this isn't healthy for me.
- 24:45This isn't what I want to really do.
- 24:47So then I am anxious.
- 24:49So then there was someone in LA that I've worked with,
- 24:53Gwen Dittmark, and she's just amazing.
- 24:56And I worked with her for initially six months
- 25:00before going on the tone up to her.
- 25:01Because I was like, I'm about to embark in something major.
- 25:05I need to know how to set my boundaries,
- 25:08how to structure my time, how to be out there
- 25:10and do what I love.
- 25:11Because when I'm going on stage or I'm speaking
- 25:13or teaching a workout or doing a podcast, I love it.
- 25:17But I need to give myself permission to then be like,
- 25:20I'm going to go in there.
- 25:22Yeah, rechargers.
- 25:25And for so long being an introvert,
- 25:28and that's the other thing that's changed a lot
- 25:30over the past, like 15 years,
- 25:32is that being an introvert is not a stigma anymore.
- 25:35Have you noticed that?
- 25:36I know we're a powerful community.
- 25:37And you can be outgoing and still be like,
- 25:40but I'm an introvert.
- 25:41Yeah, I love you.
- 25:42I love being around you.
- 25:44But now I'm going to step over here, don't take that.
- 25:46Personally, this is the boundary that I need.
- 25:48But I know that I am here for you.
- 25:51And back in the day two, some of the tone of upper treats,
- 25:55I had heard people were like,
- 25:57Karina's such a bitch.
- 26:00I don't know.
- 26:01I was like, well, this is told to me by someone else.
- 26:03I'm like, really?
- 26:04I was like, I'm shy.
- 26:06Yeah, those are very different things.
- 26:08Yeah.
- 26:08And I've learned over the years I'm not shy.
- 26:11I'm reaching out to you on TikTok
- 26:13and like, hey, Hannah, I want to meet.
- 26:15Like, yeah.
- 26:17So I'm very, I'm reaching out to trainers.
- 26:19I, you know, over the years, I've, I've worked on that.
- 26:22I think just with my childhood and everything,
- 26:24I became very introverted.
- 26:26So I've worked on loving the extroverted.
- 26:30Isn't there a new word now, too?
- 26:32Is there, I need to find out what's the new word,
- 26:34where you're like, both the or true, or true.
- 26:39I'm making a word for her.
- 26:41I'm totally making that up.
- 26:43No, there's like an actual term now.
- 26:45I don't know.
- 26:46I'm like, we'll find it.
- 26:47We'll find it.
- 26:48We'll claim it.
- 26:49But what about you and boundaries?
- 26:50Like, what was your, I'm still learning.
- 26:52And that's part of why I'm like crying in therapy
- 26:54is because I like grew up around like a lot of people
- 26:57pleasing.
- 26:58And so, what's it?
- 27:00Ambovert.
- 27:00Ambovert.
- 27:01Ambovert.
- 27:02Like, A-M.
- 27:05Ambovert.
- 27:06It sounds like a dinosaur.
- 27:07Wait, what's the definition of it?
- 27:08Right.
- 27:10So, I want to make sure.
- 27:12I'm trying to blend traits of both introverts
- 27:17who recharge alone and extroverts who recharge socially,
- 27:20allowing them to enjoy social situations,
- 27:21but also need quiet time to recharge their energy.
- 27:24They're flexible, adapting their behavior to the situation,
- 27:26and they can be outgoing or reserved as needed,
- 27:28making them good communicators and negotiators.
- 27:31Oh, my God.
- 27:32OK.
- 27:33Humble, bragg.
- 27:34Humble, bragg.
- 27:35Ambovert.
- 27:37Here, I'm going to stop saying I'm an introvert.
- 27:39Ambovert.
- 27:40Ambovert.
- 27:41Ambovert.
- 27:41Ambovert.
- 27:42No.
- 27:43Ambovert.
- 27:44Oralist.
- 27:46We got there.
- 27:47We figured, you learn something new every day.
- 27:50But yeah, it can be so scary as a people pleaser,
- 27:53because that's a learned behavior for me, where it's like,
- 27:55my body literally goes into fight or flight, where it's like,
- 27:57if I say no, I feel like everyone's
- 28:00going to find out that I'm a bad person.
- 28:02And so I'm learning how to make boundaries in a way
- 28:04that's healthy.
- 28:05And also, sometimes making a boundary
- 28:07is just being like, I'm disengaging from this person.
- 28:09I literally can't do this anymore.
- 28:11Yeah, that can be very healthy.
- 28:13Yeah, yeah, it's hard, though.
- 28:16You inspire me.
- 28:18But do you think with you with boundaries?
- 28:21Because I know me growing up with a schizophrenic mother,
- 28:24and I was people pleasing her forever and ever,
- 28:27and that's like how I became like,
- 28:31there's no boundaries.
- 28:32What do you need, mom?
- 28:32What do you need?
- 28:33Even the last five years of her life,
- 28:35I'm like, what do you need?
- 28:35How can I take care of you?
- 28:36Let me just spend the doctors of this by your house car.
- 28:41This take care of you.
- 28:43Hours day, was it something from your youth?
- 28:46And I know your dad's going to listen to this.
- 28:48He's like, amazing and perfect.
- 28:50But was there something?
- 28:51Well, I know your mom also died.
- 28:53Yeah.
- 28:54Yeah, I think it was a lot of like, with love and light.
- 28:57Like, I think with my mom, I think I was sort of,
- 28:59I wanted to be like, easy for her to parents.
- 29:02So I just took my needs and like put them over here
- 29:05and like really invested in taking care of her.
- 29:07And so it's like kind of a similar dynamic where it's like,
- 29:10at the end of the day, like looking back and like,
- 29:11oh, but I was a kid who didn't think I was allowed to like,
- 29:14have needs.
- 29:15And so as an adult, like, it's, my default
- 29:18is to just abandon my needs.
- 29:19And be like, it's not that big of a deal.
- 29:20I'll just figure it out.
- 29:21And then you're quietly dying inside
- 29:24or resenting people or just things
- 29:25that aren't ultimately healthy for you or your relationships.
- 29:29Yeah.
- 29:30Well, you got this.
- 29:31Yeah.
- 29:31When did you first start going to therapy?
- 29:32Or at the same time?
- 29:33I have dabbled throughout my life
- 29:35with my new therapist.
- 29:36I've only had one session.
- 29:37Your dad said he took you when you were like three years old.
- 29:39Yeah, because I was having like night tears.
- 29:41Oh, I had that five-year-old.
- 29:43I literally, like, would like hallucinate, like,
- 29:45big, prehistoric bugs on the ceiling.
- 29:47Like, I had like a horrible anxiety as a child.
- 29:50It's crazy.
- 29:51You're like, same girl.
- 29:54But yeah, I'm hugely into therapy.
- 29:57Yeah.
- 29:57But I've also had therapists that like,
- 29:59give me like, mad anxiety, who like,
- 30:01they kind of try and treat me like a bestie.
- 30:03And like, I need like a doctor.
- 30:05So I've done all types of therapy.
- 30:07And if you need some suggestions that people in LA
- 30:10can give them to you.
- 30:11But talk therapy doesn't do it to me or for me.
- 30:15I need homework.
- 30:16I need you to challenge me.
- 30:17I need you to give me assignments.
- 30:19I need you to give me that permission
- 30:22to give permission to myself to stand up
- 30:25to someone to set those boundaries.
- 30:26But like so much homework that inner child work
- 30:28and the writing letters to yourself.
- 30:30And that's been the best for me is that type of work.
- 30:34I had one therapist like despised
- 30:38because she would just be like,
- 30:39what do you want to talk about today?
- 30:41And I'm like, I don't know.
- 30:43And then I had like, talk, talk, talk.
- 30:45And she's like, okay, time's up.
- 30:47I'm like, what do I do?
- 30:48She's like, just change your feelings.
- 30:50Oh my God.
- 30:53Oh my God.
- 30:54What do you mean?
- 30:55Tell them like, I want to work on myself.
- 30:57That's why I'm here.
- 30:59Just change my thoughts and my feelings.
- 31:01I once had a friend tell me like,
- 31:03Hannah, I'm pretty sure your therapist
- 31:05is like that person that a bunch of people
- 31:06went to high school with and they go,
- 31:07how did she end up being a therapist?
- 31:09Like, and I was like, damn, everyone does know someone
- 31:12who became a therapist where you're like,
- 31:13that's an interesting path for you.
- 31:15So I'm glad you found someone better,
- 31:17but nothing pisses me off more.
- 31:18It's like, if I knew what was wrong with me,
- 31:20I wouldn't be here.
- 31:21If I knew how to handle it,
- 31:22I wouldn't be paying $150 a session
- 31:25because insurance doesn't care.
- 31:28Anyways.
- 31:28So on that note, I'm just gonna throw out there
- 31:30with the big silence.
- 31:31That's like one of our biggest programs is therapy
- 31:33for also we pay, we sponsor therapy
- 31:36for those whose health insurance doesn't cover it
- 31:38or they don't have health insurance.
- 31:40Just throwing that in there.
- 31:41As you should, that's amazing
- 31:43because it really should be more accessible for people.
- 31:47Are you down to play a little game,
- 31:48old TIU themed game?
- 31:50It's called Feel the Burn.
- 31:52And it's inspired by all the times
- 31:53I've felt the burn during a TIU workout
- 31:55and having another somewhere behind.
- 31:57So I'm gonna ask you just some fun burning questions
- 31:59about TIU lore.
- 32:01Okay, okay.
- 32:02Okay.
- 32:02How did you get your tan so perfect
- 32:04when you filmed those TIU videos on the beach?
- 32:07Oh my God.
- 32:08So much channer.
- 32:10We did not go to a tanning bed.
- 32:12That was me when I was in high school.
- 32:14Terrible.
- 32:15We would do like three or four layers
- 32:18the night before shoot
- 32:20and then lay in bed in a hotel room.
- 32:22Usually we were like in Turks and Kekos
- 32:24or Jamaica, like disgusting.
- 32:28Boyfriends, husbands, at the time are like, you're gross.
- 32:32I was like, God, I do it.
- 32:33And then on top of that, we would put like this bronzer.
- 32:38What is it?
- 32:39My makeup artist friend from 20 years in Anton
- 32:41had this bronzer that she would always bring on set.
- 32:44And we would just layer that on.
- 32:47Like we were thick.
- 32:48Oh my God.
- 32:49And it never...
- 32:51That's what I was wondering.
- 32:52Did it transfer? Did it melt?
- 32:53It was major because it would take like three people
- 32:57to put a sports bron.
- 32:59Because you just had to kind of stand there.
- 33:01And like raise it over.
- 33:03And then yeah, sometimes we put the cream on
- 33:06like the other Tanner, the topical layer,
- 33:08or whatever it's called after the outfit was on.
- 33:10So you'd have to like roll down your pants.
- 33:12Don't move.
- 33:14Like yeah, it was...
- 33:16Yeah, there was not a line.
- 33:17Like you guys, like those tans were perfect.
- 33:20And it was like the 2010s.
- 33:21So I felt like tans were like on another level of the 2010s.
- 33:24Yeah, right.
- 33:25It wasn't that when like, what is the reality show?
- 33:28The Jersey Shore.
- 33:29Yes.
- 33:29They were tan.
- 33:30Yeah.
- 33:31That was the five back then.
- 33:32Yeah.
- 33:33And I still watch those videos.
- 33:34And I'm like, yeah, I want to be that tan.
- 33:36And I'm like, that the muscles pop.
- 33:38And then we would put like sunscreen over your abs
- 33:41because it glistens.
- 33:43So then you have more of a six back life hack.
- 33:46I need to do that this summer because I'm like,
- 33:47I'm still working on my abs.
- 33:48But if I can glisten, I want to glisten.
- 33:51Can you tell us any tea about the tea you retreats?
- 33:53And would they ever come back?
- 33:56You have to ask me specific tea.
- 33:58Okay.
- 33:59And then would they come back?
- 34:00Yes.
- 34:01We're actually planning one in the fall.
- 34:05Just small.
- 34:07I want to start smaller.
- 34:08Okay.
- 34:09Okay.
- 34:10Okay.
- 34:11So stay tuned.
- 34:12But and then I want to do more.
- 34:13Like one of my big goals is just connection.
- 34:15Even like when requiring T.I.U.
- 34:18I've noticed how many women are like, thank you for doing
- 34:21this.
- 34:22Oh my gosh.
- 34:23I have my T.I.U.
- 34:24girls back.
- 34:25My community is back.
- 34:26Are you going to do retreat?
- 34:27So much like around that.
- 34:29Yeah.
- 34:30And I for myself too, like our older, it's hard to make
- 34:33friends and get together and have fun without the pressure
- 34:37or without the judgment.
- 34:38So yes.
- 34:39And just like be girls together.
- 34:41Yeah.
- 34:42So fun.
- 34:43And with boundaries, like you don't have to do
- 34:44everything.
- 34:45Like I've got a good retreat coming up.
- 34:47And it doesn't.
- 34:48I've already scouted out the place.
- 34:50It's great.
- 34:51Oh my god.
- 34:52Okay.
- 34:53I have plans in the fall.
- 34:55The T around the retreats.
- 34:57Yeah.
- 34:58Oh yeah.
- 34:59Okay.
- 35:00Someone commented that you cried at a retreat.
- 35:02Were you sad?
- 35:04I've seen that a few times where, oh my god.
- 35:07Karina, I think it was when Brody Jenner was at the new
- 35:10poor retreat.
- 35:12Or if I saw him in person, I would cry too.
- 35:14He's so hot.
- 35:15I wasn't crying over him.
- 35:17He actually, that's a different story.
- 35:20Anyways, he was like DJing there.
- 35:22Like what people don't know and what I can share is that the
- 35:25reason I was crying behind Brody Jenner while he's DJing is
- 35:29because there was a health scare in an ambulance backstage
- 35:33and someone had to go to the hospital.
- 35:35That's scary.
- 35:36And it was very emotional.
- 35:38There was no, like, no other T other than like, oh my gosh,
- 35:43this person that I love is not doing okay.
- 35:46And they, yeah, that's really scary.
- 35:48Oh my gosh.
- 35:49I don't blame you.
- 35:51I'm gonna see.
- 35:52I'm not hired off Craigslist.
- 35:54And I wasn't crying backstage for nothing.
- 35:57I'm literally so glad we can clear this up.
- 35:59Did you ever struggle to get through videos when you were filming
- 36:02on the beach in the heat?
- 36:04Oh, yeah.
- 36:05That's why I don't film on the beach in the heat anymore.
- 36:07Imagine being in Turks and Kekos.
- 36:10It's 100 degrees.
- 36:12And you were at the time still doing burpees and jump squats.
- 36:16And back then too, we didn't have it where we would do multiple
- 36:20camera angles.
- 36:21So you would do the workouts over and over again.
- 36:24So you're talking, we would wake up at 3 a.m.
- 36:28because you know, glam.
- 36:29Obviously.
- 36:30Now I'm a little less like glam.
- 36:32You look very glam.
- 36:33Thank you.
- 36:34I mean, it's been 20 minutes versus three hours.
- 36:36Yeah.
- 36:37Yeah.
- 36:38No hair extensions.
- 36:39I mean, some day I make about hair extensions.
- 36:41I don't think you get beach paper.
- 36:44Oh my gosh.
- 36:45I'm literally like really exposing some to all these years.
- 36:48I was like, they're mermaids.
- 36:53Mermaid workout.
- 36:54One of my favorites.
- 36:55Sharing way too much.
- 36:56The time.
- 36:57I'm an idiot.
- 36:58Of course, they were essential.
- 36:59It's okay.
- 37:00Keep going.
- 37:01I mean, they were great.
- 37:02They looked really good.
- 37:03Yeah.
- 37:04I wouldn't have known.
- 37:05Back in the day, it was like clippings or something.
- 37:06Do you have your hair is amazing?
- 37:07Do you have?
- 37:08No, I don't have extent.
- 37:09It is real.
- 37:10Yeah.
- 37:11You got your mermaid hair.
- 37:12Thank you.
- 37:13It's like this all over my body.
- 37:14That's the only thing that's like it's like big toe mustache.
- 37:17I know.
- 37:18I got to keep it in check.
- 37:19But I did your guys's hair tutorial with the curls and your cat eye tutorial, which we
- 37:25both have today.
- 37:26I always have a cat eye.
- 37:27Me too.
- 37:28That's my thing.
- 37:29I don't care that it's millennial.
- 37:30I don't give a fuck.
- 37:31Is it millennial?
- 37:32Jensy's mean about the cat eye.
- 37:33And I'm like.
- 37:34There's like brown eyeshadow and creating a big cat eye.
- 37:37But with the eyeshadow, it's like oral at the brow.
- 37:39I'm like, it's the same thing.
- 37:41It's a cat eye.
- 37:43Makes me feel sexy.
- 37:44Yeah.
- 37:45Love it.
- 37:46I got sand in your sneakers and was that annoying?
- 37:48I don't sand everywhere.
- 37:50You're like everywhere.
- 37:52Everywhere.
- 37:53And it was like showering at the end of the day.
- 37:57Shoot day.
- 37:58Can you imagine the amount of Tanner falling off the sand, the like stink, Oh my gosh,
- 38:06I'm like really do glamourizing.
- 38:09It's amazing relatable queen.
- 38:11These are the things I never think about though.
- 38:13Yeah.
- 38:14Aspirational aspects of these videos. Did you feel so powerful when you guys would film those intros like the break a sweat one and the
- 38:20DZ daisy one when you guys are like on the little like Ferris wheel
- 38:23I was like how fun was that I literally was that footage altered my brain chemistry
- 38:27I was like I've never seen cooler people I'm like recently trying to see if those videos are still out there
- 38:32Are they on the YouTube? I need to debug the break a sweat intro got cut and I was like maybe that's a copyright thing
- 38:37I don't know now that Becky G is massive. Yeah, she was at the Creighton Cultivate event
- 38:42I should have gone up to her. I was telling does I was like that's break a sweat Becky G
- 38:47We're back in the day. She had just come out and we actually talked to her label and got permission to use it
- 38:52Oh my god
- 38:54But DZ daisy too that's
- 38:58DZ um that you're like dancing on the beach. I was like there's so
- 39:03I mean no one in fitness has done that and I still do it a bit too with like marketing stuff and telling a story and
- 39:09I love that because I love putting it's like a little mini movie and inspiration of like how you're going to feel yes and
- 39:17So much fun so much work went into planning all of that and remember the time we rented a yacht
- 39:23I got it. I think that was the same shoot as the Ferris wheel. Oh my god
- 39:29Oh, yeah, because you were like you were like running out like across the deck in bikinis
- 39:33Probably yeah, I was like you were selling like a lifestyle. Yeah, I've just like having fun
- 39:39Being a hot girl living your best life. Yeah, I mean now we're in just selling a lifestyle taking nap
- 39:45I mean, that's an important lifestyle as well. I would argue the most important. I'm just kidding and being a palm bomb
- 39:52An important lifestyle as well. Shout out to all of your palms seven seven. I was and OG skunky
- 39:58She's 15 or 16 now celebrity icons Kong. She is thriving
- 40:04thriving bravo reality stars young. Oh my gosh
- 40:07You inspired me to watch that entire series again over the holidays. What was a rewatch like for you?
- 40:13It will Bobby had never watched ever episode. Oh my god, and
- 40:17It was I watched a Desiree like maybe a year ago
- 40:22Two and a half years ago. It's a good rewatch and it's so interesting now because I can watch it
- 40:28With a smile and like laugh and have fun and have all those memories and
- 40:33I've actually had a lot of people come up now and be like you need a reality show again
- 40:37I was like it could be fun. Oh my god, bravo. Are you listening?
- 40:42Please
- 40:44Yeah, please
- 40:47We need it. I mean when you and Bobby went on that date on the show
- 40:51I was like he's so obsessed with her and it's so cute to see. Okay, that's the other thing on the tone up
- 40:56Yeah, we need the Bobby T. It's true. He moved in below me. Oh the day we started filming
- 41:02It was I remember the date was October 1st, whatever year
- 41:05We had mutual friends and he had a Facebook message me and he was going through a breakup
- 41:10He wanted to move from
- 41:11Eastside LA somewhere and moved to Manhattan Beach and he's like if anything opens up a two bedroom
- 41:18Me and my friend Eddie want to move there. I had lived upstairs had broken up with boyfriend
- 41:23So I was single. I stayed there. I had monkey and skunky my neighbor downstairs broke up with her boyfriend
- 41:30Moving out and I messaged Bobby on Facebook. He's like hey
- 41:34This is apartments available and he's like sounds perfect. This is going to get weird. I was like
- 41:40oh
- 41:42I immediately we basically like started dating immediately and then
- 41:46As we're talking about the bravo show he moved in I didn't even tell him we were filming a TV show
- 41:51But there's like producers and everyone in the garage below and he's like what's going on here?
- 41:56I was like oh, we're just filming a show
- 41:59And you're like what did we just move into because there's only two units
- 42:03So we were just there and then basically
- 42:06lived
- 42:07Together from day he was like down to be on the show. He's like I'll sign that release
- 42:11Well, we were on a lunch break from filming and I was telling cat something. I was like I made out with the neighbor last night
- 42:19I was like just kissing and
- 42:21Stephanie our producer
- 42:24Creeped over to our lunch table. She's like what'd you say?
- 42:28And I was like yeah, just Bobby the neighbor you've met him. She's like huh?
- 42:32So apparently then they go knocking on his door with a release and are saying oh you film
- 42:40Oh my god, and he was like yeah, oh my god ladies if he wanted to he would okay, okay
- 42:46That's incredible you guys are so cute and it I mean it worked out you're still married to this day
- 42:51Yeah, 10 years this year married for 13 years together
- 42:55Congratulations. That's incredible. Oh, I love that wait. Oh, there was a chair in your apartment on the show
- 43:02And there was sort of some discourse around the chair like oh this chair is like Brian was like this chair is too early
- 43:08I don't want it and you guys were like we love it. What happened to the chair?
- 43:12I
- 43:15Was like so over that chair for then
- 43:17Bobby wanted to keep it so he had it in storage for a while and then when my mom
- 43:23We got her a cabin up in idle wild. We put the chair there and Bobby's like it's perfect for the cabin
- 43:29And then once she passed and we were selling the cabin. I was like just get rid of the chair. It's been through too much
- 43:35Yeah, yeah, and Bobby secretly did not get rid of the chair
- 43:39He kept it in secret. Yeah, and so it was in storage and then as I was building the toner down podcast studio
- 43:45He's like what about the chair?
- 43:48He's like aren't you glad I didn't get rid of it
- 43:50So now the way painting that's in the show and the chair are in the toner down podcast studio in Austin
- 43:57I'm emotional. I have the chills
- 44:00That's really special that's T.I. You lore right there that chair
- 44:04And it's a fun chair. It is I'm glad we have it Bobby
- 44:08Yeah, and I loved I loved your apartment on the show. It was so like beachy and cute
- 44:11Yeah, it was very teal
- 44:13Yeah, it was very teal
- 44:14But that was also like the color of that time. Yeah, it was mermaid core
- 44:18Well, it's coming back to I mean I'm coming back to like teal and pings back to your roots. Yeah
- 44:23I like took a few years of just like only wearing black, but now I'm I'm getting colorful again
- 44:29I love that. It's like a gorgeous metaphor for where you're at in your life
- 44:32Yeah, not that you were like depressed before but you're in this like fun era now
- 44:36My fun era speaking of
- 44:38Close did you get to pick your outfits for all the videos?
- 44:41Yes, oh my god. They were all so fire like for the workout videos. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Oh my god
- 44:47I still strive to look that cool when I workout
- 44:50I mean
- 44:53I mean like I'm getting back there
- 44:55It takes effort though like it's like it's like planning any other outfit where you're like like I like taking the time
- 45:00To put my gym looks together, but sometimes I'm like I'm just happy. I'm moving. I can't think about that today
- 45:04If I'm just working out by myself, ladies
- 45:07I'm not always like style when I go workout. I'm like throw a t-shirt on
- 45:11Some sneakers and just workout. Yeah, it must be fun though to be like
- 45:16The owner of a fitness empire because you can really rationalize like getting all the cute comfy clothes that you want
- 45:21Like that's your work clothes. Yeah. Yeah, which is dope. Yeah
- 45:25When it's like time to go to an event or something or you ever like fuck
- 45:28I have so many workout clothes anymore going out clothes. I have an exquisite closet
- 45:33I actually I'm very artistic. So I love fashion
- 45:38So when I get a chance to go out and I do I will dress up and have so much fun with it
- 45:43Well, you're outfits and Vegas for so cute as others on Instagram. I was like hell yeah
- 45:47You turned out looks for that. Yeah. Oh my god. You need to do like a tic-tac like closet tour
- 45:52I'm like can we see it? We need to see it. It's a very eclectic like from vintage to
- 46:00Very inexpensive to name brand and luxury brand. It's like a mix of everything
- 46:06I always feel like that's like my favorite type of style when there's a little high-low
- 46:10Something that's like one of the kind was something you could like go get yourself if you wanted to
- 46:14Obsessed
- 46:15Quick pivot was it ever annoying or hard to film videos when you had your period
- 46:20Not for me, which is crazy. I'd never had cramps
- 46:23That's gorgeous. Yeah, I mean it's annoying because it's like uncomfortable. Yeah, like just
- 46:29You know, oh my god. You're like I've been through enough. I was blessed to not have cramps
- 46:33Obsessed. Yeah, there was an episode of toned up where someone crashed a work trip to I think you were in Hawaii
- 46:40Did you know that that was going to happen or was that really a surprise? I did not know oh
- 46:45I mean like you never know with reality TV like what's produced and what's not right because some is produced so with the show
- 46:51They basically everything that we were already doing
- 46:55So I was in charge of like creating the schedule and letting production know
- 46:59This is what we're doing for toned up. This is where we're traveling. This is blah blah blah every day
- 47:03We were done filming. I was then working and doing
- 47:06Prepping for the next day and sending and photo producers and doing travel planning
- 47:11It was all really what we're doing
- 47:13There's some produced stuff like when we went to a bar in Maui and like I kissed some boy they're like
- 47:19Like it's too fun
- 47:21Because I had actually done that in real life before because I was single. Yeah, and it was like the kissing game
- 47:29So oh, yeah, the kissing game. That's a fun game. I think you can do that anymore, but
- 47:36But it was a thing and so then they found this boy and they were like
- 47:41Is it okay if she comes over?
- 47:43He's like yeah
- 47:46That's hilarious. I remember you're watching that scene being like oh my god
- 47:50They're like so fun and cool that they're filming a fitness video tomorrow
- 47:53And they're still like we're gonna get a drink, but that's the thing we wouldn't have stayed out that way naturally
- 47:59That was a lot because like was it because of filming? Yeah, and we had to get like that scene
- 48:06Mm-hmm
- 48:07What do you normally do like the night before a shoot
- 48:10Then or now as they both
- 48:13Then go have some champagne
- 48:19Now go have some
- 48:22I love it you're like I was fun then I'm fun now
- 48:25I feel like so much of like fitness culture is like really restrictive and I appreciate that like
- 48:29You were always like it's why not Wednesday like you can still be a person
- 48:34Yeah, I definitely probably was more restrictive back then in terms of like the nutrition
- 48:38And like what I would eat
- 48:40Now I'm very
- 48:42Just whatever I want to eat. Yeah, but I'm overall just pretty healthy
- 48:47But even last night up on the rooftop we had a burger and fries
- 48:51But it's not like I'm eating all the fries totally that's the thing
- 48:54I'm not like a big food craver
- 48:57So you're like I'll enjoy it, but I'm not gonna like think about it all day long. Yeah, it's a good place to be
- 49:01Yeah, those are all my rapid fire questions for you where we gonna make a surprise call
- 49:06I think we have to do you have oh my god, like what am I gonna say?
- 49:11Should I be like Bobby? I swear I didn't call you a douche it was someone in my comments
- 49:15You can randomly ask him questions. Oh my god. What should I ask?
- 49:19What do we want to know from Bobby? What do we want to know from Bobby?
- 49:23Let's see
- 49:25Hmm
- 49:26What was it like being Karina's hot neighbor?
- 49:29Haha, you can just you'll he'll it'll just slow
- 49:42Oh my gosh, hi Bobby. It's Hannah
- 49:49Oh, my gosh, I love that we have a chorus of Go Invents in the Backgrounds. That's gorgeous
- 49:54Your dad
- 49:56No, it kind of blends into my life at this point.
- 49:59They wanted to make a podcast appearance.
- 50:02I have a quick question.
- 50:03Well, first day of an apology, because I swear
- 50:05I didn't call you a douche.
- 50:06Someone in my comments did, but I apologize.
- 50:09Well, I didn't even see it, but you know,
- 50:12sometimes maybe it could be accurate.
- 50:13I mean, you and me both, Gabi.
- 50:15We'll have a little moment.
- 50:16Sometimes the douchedom has to come out for the greater good.
- 50:20My other question comment is, what was it like being
- 50:23Karina's hot neighbor?
- 50:25Ooh, ooh, that was a interesting and fun time, I would say.
- 50:30I would say.
- 50:31Interesting.
- 50:32Honestly, I have such great memories of that period of time.
- 50:40It was like the perfect scenario of living in one of the best
- 50:46locations we're in Manhattan Beach.
- 50:49I got out of a relationship and was upset about it.
- 50:54So all of the sudden, this transition
- 50:56was a very, very easy transition from a sad time also back.
- 51:01I love that.
- 51:02It's like Melrose Place.
- 51:04Yeah, it basically was.
- 51:05It basically was.
- 51:06And you're like, it was very convenient.
- 51:09We did not have to drive anywhere.
- 51:12My roommate loved it.
- 51:13I was moving in with my buddy, Eddie.
- 51:15And shout out to Eddie.
- 51:17Yeah, shout out, Eddie.
- 51:18We split a two bedroom place.
- 51:20So I just had to, I had to live with Monkey and Skunk
- 51:25at the time when I would go visit Korea.
- 51:27Well, I remember a time, because you could hear them
- 51:29pitter pattering upstairs.
- 51:32And I literally could hear you ping.
- 51:36It was like, well insulated to be a check ass.
- 51:39Yeah.
- 51:40And I was like, you probably could hear me farting.
- 51:45But I do remember too that Karina was like, this isn't going
- 51:49to be serious, like kind of like, you know, you just got
- 51:51a relationship, just have fun in the mountains and whatever else.
- 51:55And I'm more of like a relationship person.
- 51:58So if I'm, you know, dating one person or dating one person.
- 52:02And so I was like, oh, okay.
- 52:05And I was like, but you know what?
- 52:07Let's venture out.
- 52:08I mean, I can just imagine you, Bobby, being like, oh,
- 52:10bummer, I'm newly single.
- 52:11I guess I have to move into this building
- 52:13with like my friend and my hot neighbor, like this sucks.
- 52:17And sometimes you have to sacrifice for the greater goods.
- 52:20Yeah.
- 52:21We just, you know, we did what we have to do.
- 52:23That's beautiful.
- 52:24Thank you so much, Bobby.
- 52:25Karina, do you have anything else for your husband?
- 52:27No, send me pictures of the palms.
- 52:30I love you.
- 52:30No, you'll get a lot.
- 52:32Yeah.
- 52:33Bye.
- 52:35Wow, wow.
- 52:37I mean, I feel like all my dreams came true today.
- 52:40All my TIU dreams came true.
- 52:43This was incredible.
- 52:44Thank you for starting a turned up lore.
- 52:47I've had a lot of fun with it.
- 52:50Me too.
- 52:50I hope that we answer enough questions.
- 52:53I have a speakpipe.com slash Karina Dawn,
- 52:56where you can leave other voicemails and questions.
- 53:00Oh my gosh, listeners, seriously.
- 53:02And everyone who is here because of the TikTok series,
- 53:05make sure to hit up Karina with your questions.
- 53:08Yay.
- 53:09I'll do my best.
- 53:10Yeah.
- 53:11Thank you so much.
- 53:12Thank you.
- 53:12This has been fun.
- 53:13Bye.
- 53:14Bye.
