- 1:02Guy. Kind of right in the middle of the programs run here now is
- 1:08the case of the Villainous Friend from August twenty seventh, nineteen fifty No not
- 1:26again, I'm twenty foot five in my thirty Sis nine hundred and two in
- 1:36a triple Z The Big Guy, NBC present The Big Guy, another in
- 1:53the series of adventures of a very unusual detective Got to a car, gon
- 1:59to a car work for his clients on a strictly cash basis to provide for
- 2:02the needs of his nearest and dearest Josh Junior and his daughter Debby. To
- 2:07these two, Sharp is both father and mother to his clients. He is
- 2:12a good detective. To Josh and Debby, he's the friendly magician, the
- 2:15fabulous hero, the giant among giants, the Big Guy to Night's Adventure with
- 2:25the Big Guy, the case of the Villainous Friend. A man alone trying
- 2:34to bring up a pair of youngsters runs into a lot of unexpected problems.
- 2:38One of my most unexpected was a sudden shortage of bedtime stories. After all,
- 2:44you can read grimm fairy tales only a few hundred times before the kids
- 2:49begin to tire of them. And that goes her hands Christian Anderson and all
- 2:53the rest of the Once upon a timers. I had reached that point with
- 2:55Josh and Debby, and they were getting so bored with witches sleeping beauties.
- 3:00But finally, for all our sakes, I tried tapping a new source.
- 3:05I bought a copy of Tales from Shakespeare. It was an immediate hit.
- 3:09In fact, it was too big a hit. That first night I read
- 3:14The Tempest and two Gentlemen from Verona, And still they didn't want me to
- 3:17stop. What's the next one, Daddy, or we'll let the next one?
- 3:22Wait? Baby, you and Debbie have to go to sleep. What's
- 3:27right? It's the tragedy of Ofella. Now you just close your eyes and
- 3:37yes. Well, and he was a man, Josh, oh, what's
- 3:42the crap? Well, he was married to a woman named Desdemona, who
- 3:46loved him very much. Heganic tragedy. So the tragedy came about because he
- 3:52had a friend, a friend named the Argo, and the Argo came to
- 3:55a fellow and told him that Desdemona didn't love him at all. He said
- 4:00she loved somebody else. He was dead. Oh, very is what happens
- 4:04here? Well, next teak. Next a couple of shrewd articles who are
- 4:11trying to warm another story out of their hard working father. Give him a
- 4:14kiss and say good night. And it was a good night under my roof.
- 4:26But elsewhere things were happening that were fated finally to intrude on my routine
- 4:30and make a shambles of it. The center of these events was a boy,
- 4:33a boy named Frank Gallard. I'd snagged the lad in question two years
- 4:39ago after he'd assisted in the armed robbery of the filling stations and committed assault
- 4:43and battery resisting arrest. My action in the matter came as part of my
- 4:46contract with a mutual Indemnity Insurance Company, and I had been in the courtroom
- 4:50that day the judge passed a ten years sentence on Frank Gollard. And then
- 4:56the same evening, while I was telling Josh and Debbie about Othello inside the
- 5:00grabbed gray walls on the Upstate Penitentiary. One O three number or oh for
- 5:19one, the number five sick all four, temperator sells one day, number
- 5:30five sick all five, the number sick all by night numberator dembo be you
- 5:45hit your wife lately, Frank? Yeah, I got a letter from Lina
- 5:48last week. Now let's turn in happy thing. Yeah, sure, get
- 5:51in a minute, Lilah. Oh that's that's the pretty name. Half Come
- 6:01you ask me that? Oh I heard your tossing around last night. I
- 6:08knew you wasn't sleeping. And I've been thinking about all the guys in this
- 6:12place. Who got somebody waiting for him? And wondering where all I'm somebody's
- 6:15are tonight, wondering who she's dancing where, and wondering who she's drinking?
- 6:21Will wonder who is a kid? Is cold? You? One? Half?
- 6:28I was only wondering is a clean kid? Clean and sweep and straight?
- 6:32Oh boy? Sure, there's a few good friends in the world.
- 6:35Maybe you got yourself one of'em. You could expect me to get said,
- 6:40now, could you? Frank? Man never knows about a thing like
- 6:43that. Man just never know. Good Night, Half in sor. I
- 6:47mean, how you a Frank? I said, good night. I don't
- 6:49want you to be sore. I mean you hit hear me, Frank?
- 6:58Okay, I'm not sure that's okay? Half, good night. Baby.
- 7:10Half was his cell mate, and Half was his friends. Big, slow,
- 7:14paternal Half McClane in for life and not a man to talk much about
- 7:18the way he was to spend the rest of his natural days. It was
- 7:21you to a friendship, and the two found a degree of peace in each
- 7:26other's companionship. It was a piece, however, that was ripped the shreds
- 7:30with a suddenness of a thunderclap. One hot night in early August, Half
- 7:33had smuggled a newspaper from the prison library into the cell, and young Gallard
- 7:38was lying on his bunk turning the pages. He half the matter, what's
- 7:44seeking? You'll say, hey, listen to what's cute? Lovely? Who's
- 7:47made it? Doing a ten years stretch for armed robbery? Is now seeing
- 7:51the town inside out with more than one flick haired rolling off. Even while
- 7:57I was on trial, she was rocking off. Kid, take it when
- 8:01I took the ride of this pile of stinking start while I prayed for every
- 8:05night he was telling me out midnight to morning, night after night, listen
- 8:16times happening. But he had no choice about taking it. With his friend
- 8:33Half helped, he calmed down and went on with a monotonous routine of his
- 8:37daily life behind the walls of the prison. And then, late one night
- 8:41weeks later, in the tell he shared with Half McLean, he found that
- 8:46he didn't have to take it anymore. Right, hey, kid, wake
- 8:50up and listen. Listen, will happen? Listen? Good? You gotta
- 8:56get out of here. Let's you're reading yourself alive. You gotta moved loose
- 9:00from this place. But I can't. I can't for parole, getting a
- 9:05parole, baby, alps got it all fixed? Fine, you got it
- 9:11fixed. Take a look, kid, why did you get gone out of
- 9:16the arsenal? Baby? It took me three months and a lot of doing,
- 9:18but I got it. And the trusty, the one in the laundry
- 9:20office, he's going to leave the laundry door unlock for twenty minutes tomorrow night
- 9:26be a truck just outside. How'd you do? What it happened? Oh?
- 9:28Look, I've been in this can twelve years. There are ways,
- 9:31baby, there are always ways. You're going nah n, I got nothing
- 9:37with the outside world, kid, Apple, rest easy right here, you
- 9:41go on. You can still hate and that means you can still live,
- 9:48enjoy yourself. Don't get yourself snagged. Baby. It was at eleven o'clock
- 9:58the next night guard chief, two minutes before they've chosenn hour half in the
- 10:03claim stood crucial guard for the appearance of any official, and the boy prepared
- 10:09for his venture. Will you make for her a pipe figure leo show,
- 10:15I'll wait till she does quit and get nabbed off waiting forget it. I
- 10:18look, I'll get the grapevine and let her know that you're coming and tell
- 10:24her a standby for you know ye eleven o'clock. O can't play you age
- 10:33now, baby, happen will be around to look out for you. No
- 10:37point in saying thank you. I happen to go n How brain is?
- 10:48The boy was halfway across the prison yard when don't wear off and the shaft
- 10:58of a giant searchlight, fucking like the lunge of an angry lion. Darting
- 11:01out of its blair, he took cover behind an angle of the walls.
- 11:09The boy fired at the guard on the watch tap. He made a dash
- 11:13for the laundry building and found the door unlocked. The schedule. The truck
- 11:26roared along the back roads on the all night drive to the city while the
- 11:28state was springing into action to retake Frank Gallard, retake him dead or alive.
- 11:39Next morning, when I walked into my place of business, my own
- 11:43personal private eye, Risky Skinner was waiting for me, as usual, but
- 11:48today Risky wasn't alone. A young city cop, Tom Saunders by name,
- 11:52had dropped him to tell me about the Gallard estate. He was little more
- 11:56than a rookie, this cop, green but enterprising, so knowing you are
- 12:01the man who put the finger on him in the first place. Two years
- 12:03ago, Sharp, it occurred to a few of the boys at precinct headquarters
- 12:07that you might have ideas about retaking from a Gallars. They figured you deck
- 12:09off a few ankles about the pumps, it could be maybe useful commanding.
- 12:13It would be glad to do all. I can tell me how much action
- 12:16is underway now well, the state's being dragged, commended, and even the
- 12:20coast Guard has been alerted on this one. Any results yet so far we've
- 12:24drawn a goose egg and just a second, Yeah, sharp speaking, this
- 12:30is what where are you? I'm not calling from home at the shop.
- 12:37I'm afraid to go there. Why. I'll tell you why. I got
- 12:41a call last night from the grape Pine, a gold Hill. Yeah,
- 12:46Hike is on his way to my place, on the way to his own
- 12:50home. Hello, Hello, this is Dollars, This is Dallas. Hello.
- 12:56Hello. The wire was dead, but the news had been sensational,
- 13:07leaving risky to try to check back on the call. I found missus Gallard's
- 13:11addressed in the city listing, flatched on the patrolman Saunders, and headed for
- 13:15gallard home. By twenty five of ten we were in his apartment. I
- 13:20was at the window and Saunders by the door. Hey, shut up,
- 13:28okay, okay, I see him. He's coming in great, get ready
- 13:35for business. But wait for him in the hall, all right, easy
- 13:39with that door, Saunders, Harry comes, Let him get to the first
- 13:46landing and for peace sake. Stop shaking there he is. I'm carrying it
- 13:52down. Hey Saunders, no wait, but I was too late. The
- 14:03green Rookie firing in panic missed and Frank Gallard went crashing back down the stairs,
- 14:09through the door and out into the street. I didn't have to be
- 14:16told that once Blues Gallard would head for his wife. After all, Lilah
- 14:20had tipped me off, and he probably knew that she was the only person
- 14:24on earth who had been wise to his whereabouts. The immediate deal Airport was
- 14:28to contact her without delay. It was just about this time there came a
- 14:33knock on the door of Warden Jamison's office at the State Penitentiary, and the
- 14:37cell brought guard by the name of Spears walked in with the announcement that somebody
- 14:41wanted to talk to the warden or is it Spears, prisoner from cell blockade?
- 14:46He yam until I went to see what was wrong. Yes, Spears
- 14:50let me told me he could we take Gallart for it's nothing flat and helped
- 14:54me. Now I'm not kid, and I know exactly what I told you
- 14:58the way out? All right, all right, I'll talk to him.
- 15:01Okay, you say you can recapture Frank Collard and be back before morning.
- 15:05Oh are you number five thousand two? I mean your name, oh,
- 15:09my name? Name is half the claim. I presume the claim that you
- 15:16can only perform its remarkable feet if you allow to be left out of the
- 15:20person alone who wants alone? Send spears with me with a gun, A
- 15:24dozen guns? Two cares hell. Look, I'm only trying to do the
- 15:30right thing here, mister, wouldn't That's all I'm interested. All right,
- 15:35we'll send spear it with you and you won't regret it. I'll tell you
- 15:39what I'm telling you something, mcclaim. You're succeeding this mission. I'll say,
- 15:43what can be done to is to cure you a full and complete party.
- 15:48No you mean it? Don't you think you deserve it? Well?
- 15:52I yes, I did figure something like that. I imagine you didn't acclaim
- 16:00bear. Yes, sir, you'll take McLean into the city. Let him
- 16:03do exactly as he thinks. That so hap McClean, and former and temporary
- 16:15public hero passed out of the prison walls on his errand of black treachery.
- 16:19Meanwhile, we were still ransacking the city for Lillah, and as it turned
- 16:23out, Frank Gallard was doing the same in the poem Booths of a Hole
- 16:29in the wall cigar store on a side street. Yes, I'm a kind
- 16:33of get rid of view. Yeah, that's it. Howbout why she's had
- 16:37not give me a river of few? Five? Three four five? Thank
- 16:45you? Hello? Is this you, Lilah? How are you? Frank?
- 16:56Honey? I'm fine. I'm gonna look for your Lallah. Honey.
- 17:00I just turned on the radio and her news. I just woke up.
- 17:04I'm going to sleep. Why did you go up to Riverview to sleep?
- 17:08Lallah? What's the matter? Friend? Matter nothing? I just wanted to
- 17:15see you. Well, are you I'll come stay where you are, I'll
- 17:19come to you. Do you remember how to get here? Yeah? I
- 17:23remember? You're alone? Lallah? Yes, girlfriend was staying with me up
- 17:30until last night. She had to get back to talk. Oh honey,
- 17:34I wish we could be together. I wish we never had to leave here.
- 17:37Say where you are till I get that baby? Maybe you never will.
- 17:49Feeling for the gun butt in his pocket, Frank Gallard ducked out onto
- 17:52the sidewalk and started the Toucher's journey for his final long sought vengeance. Wait
- 18:00in the afternoon back at the office, Thunders and I were checking the short
- 18:03wave report. You know it baffles me a little shot. And what does
- 18:07Dollard's wife turning it in? Why she's a gunman's doll isn't sing? No,
- 18:12no, no, no quite anyway, she's not running through the phone,
- 18:15why not? A word around has been that she's almost arranged for parole.
- 18:22Raight, uh yeah, very Banner, yeah, risky, little luck
- 18:27at last that we can use. I think I found out where missus Gallard
- 18:32phone you prompt, yeah, but I'm afraid I won't help. And he
- 18:34seems to be raying up from my phone booth, phone booth. Huh where
- 18:37in a place called banners Tabin over a time street near the river? You
- 18:41know it? I said, Do you know it's commander huh oh, yeah,
- 18:45yeah, I know it. Riskyah, commander, Go get me a
- 18:49cap and a sweater. Huh a cap in the sweater? What do he
- 18:53wanted for? Go? Where? I'm going to Banner's tavern? Risky?
- 18:57And I want her to look like one of the boy. Banner's tavern,
- 19:11at the foot of a wharf on the river had never been what might be
- 19:14called a pride to the community, and tonight was no exception. The clientele
- 19:19I saw at once was entirely mailed, except for one blonde cutie who sat
- 19:23alone over a glass of beer, a bright red scar of a smile on
- 19:29her hard face. Well, what are you looking at? What do you
- 19:37think? Honey? Dated? I got a boyfriend coming from where that would
- 19:42be telling? Well, how's of our little drink? Till he shows?
- 19:47Well, go ahead? What do you have? And water? Why not?
- 19:53What's your name? Beautiful? That's all? That's the Moody and Nester
- 20:00Moody. So you ain't the dog used to kick around with half mcclaim.
- 20:06You don't half like that? Will you to operate together in North Jersey?
- 20:11What do you now? How's he doing these days? You didn't stir?
- 20:17Didn't you know that? For how long? Hard to say? Right now?
- 20:21There's some kind of caper in the words. Yeah, I've been trying
- 20:25to figure it out all night. What blue down? Well? Lean over
- 20:30here? Yeah, about eleven o'clock last night, Half set me the word
- 20:34over the grape vine. H And he tells me to call up a certain
- 20:37private eye this morning, announced myself as missus Galland and say that Frank is
- 20:41on his way to his wife's flash. What do you think? What do
- 20:45you think? I think? I trusted your mighty fast Hanson. How about
- 20:52that little grim? How about better? Better? How about a little pinch?
- 20:57What's rob? Stop? Lad? And I you handed that runn around
- 21:03this morning? I got her the headquarters, not, however, without a
- 21:14set of fingernail marks down my cheek and walked in on a bit of exciting
- 21:18news. It seemed a postbal clerk at a place called Riverview had phoned in
- 21:22giving Lila Gallards whereabouts the addressed twenty one Canton Lane, at which street number
- 21:29Franks Gallard had just arrived. Frank, he founded so strange over the phone.
- 21:37I don't understand what have I done? It really wants me to tell
- 21:40you, Lilah. It's called the cups and told them where they could pick
- 21:44me up. I did, Frank? Yeah, thank Frank? How could
- 21:48I? I didn't even know you'd broken out? Claim got worked at the
- 21:52apartment last night? Who told you? I like dat? But I wasn't
- 21:55there. I wasn't even there. That's an easy can be in and then
- 22:00you'll run for the temple. Thanks? Do you honestly believe I do that
- 22:06I know you hypocritical. I've done it. Yeah. Hello, he I
- 22:18lamed out myself, kid. I figured you needed somebody to look at it
- 22:22in the human You've done business, yet not all of it. I'm right
- 22:27here at home base. Yeah, baby, you'll contacted my wife last night.
- 22:33Thank you. I won't ask again. I gotta hang up now we
- 22:41get the second Frank. Look, I'm in the alley behind banners, tab
- 22:47and on the side by the riomor you know where that is. Yes,
- 22:49will beat it down to see me. You can. I got a power
- 22:53along. Who's gonna see you safe out of the States on a strictly credit
- 22:57basis. Okay, thanks, thanks to Billy. I'll see your power you
- 23:07sheep, lying, rocking, deceitful trap. No fank, no, not
- 23:12a gun. Come up. This is beyond bathing and no place for track.
- 23:17If I prayers, if they say him, there won't be any time
- 23:18later. I won't me time to prayer. Thank I die before I heard
- 23:26you. I don't mind losing my life right. All I'll be bread is
- 23:32I'll never see you again. Never. Never. It was at that moment
- 23:47that Risky and I drove up in front of twenty one Canton Lane and heard
- 23:49the shots as he ran up the path to the house that was come Yeah,
- 23:57Colard Colored you blessed food? Why didn't get do you crazy? Pop?
- 24:03I just killed a liar, a scoolly and a chick. That's going
- 24:07out with our question. First, there's got to be a few answers given
- 24:11boys, such as such as, did you know this cheat here had just
- 24:15about arranged to get you parole at the next meeting of the board? A
- 24:18lie and do bad for your peace of mind? I'm not not when I
- 24:22said that, nor when I say this. Your wife didn't call me an
- 24:26inform on you today, Collared di. She didn't know, she didn't.
- 24:30The call I got came from a woman named Esther Moody, who made it
- 24:33to help weave this met your caught animal Moody. That's the Moody who's that?
- 24:40What she got to do with me? She's got nothing to do with
- 24:42you. But I think maybe her boyfriend has her boyfriend, a guy by
- 24:48the name of Hap McClean. For a moment he stared at me like a
- 24:59wounded animal, and then his eyes closed. Slowly he shook his head wearily.
- 25:03Is it to come out of a sick dizziness and neither riskin or.
- 25:07I caught the movement of his hand as he blast dangling bunch of punkiness into
- 25:12blind blackness, and he crised out through the window. Here or gone in
- 25:25the alley behind Banner's taverns. He's getting chili waking him acclaiming where's your boy?
- 25:33He said, he's on his way to it. There we come.
- 25:41He shot him. Can't you see flathead? Take in your gun. Let
- 25:45me take him in there nice the final lamp post, so I don't see
- 25:49you too soon. Here, I am kids. How you are making his
- 25:56head? I killed her as sure, Sure that's what you had it too.
- 26:02Come on, we'll go in Bannet and have a few snows. That'll
- 26:04set you up, right, he half. Yeah. The pilot that was
- 26:10gonna help me lamb out of the stake. Oh well, he had to
- 26:15go, but he'd be back. I thinking he was back. Now that's
- 26:19him behind the lamp posting it happened. I gotta get him through. The
- 26:25kid, how much blood do you want on your hands? Baby? That's
- 26:29a little more, just a little more, your grazy crummy stool pigeons.
- 26:41Hap McLean took a look into the empty, cold eyes of the boy,
- 26:45and suddenly bolted down the alley at the corner McLean form abruptly in pirate.
- 26:51The bullet hit and he waited for Frank Dollard to go down, But he
- 26:55waited in vain. The boy came hoarding head lord, staggering, baby,
- 27:04baby, don't be sore on me. I don't want you saw on me
- 27:08Frank as he spoke McClean fight again, and found himself with an empty gun
- 27:14in his hand, and he blinked unbelievingly as the boys swayed with the anguish
- 27:18of the shots, and then steadily he plowed forward, half crazy with fear.
- 27:23McClean stumbled into the darkness until he came the world's end, the edge
- 27:26of the wharf behind the tavern. Oh, don't be all thrank. You
- 27:33gotta listen to your hat. You gotta listen to you are happy. You
- 27:37can't be sore on me? Baby, Something for you ones, Oh,
- 27:44don't shoot kid, what's cooked out there? Frank Gallard, looking like a
- 27:59child to sleep, was dead, stretched out on the rotten planking of the
- 28:03war when we found him. Josh and Debby were in bed. When I
- 28:14climbed the stairs, to our flat, and knowing nothing of what was going
- 28:17on inside of me, they clamored for the next story in the book.
- 28:21The next story was a fellow, and as I read the tale of the
- 28:25tragic Desert Desdemona and Otello and the final undoing of the Argo, I shuddered
- 28:30with a kind of recognition. At the end of the narrative, there was
- 28:36silence. Then the fellow killed himself too. Yes, baby, I don't
- 28:41see why he had to dine. He didn't know what are you to hear?
- 28:45His sleep? Which yet, daddy? Yes, essentially it was the
- 28:52Argo's fault. So why did he just explain? Go on, listen?
- 28:57Maybe he didn't want to, honey, Oh, hes because he'd lost his
- 29:03the most it's let's part of it. What's the other card? God?
- 29:08Don't you know he'd lost Theeago too, Yes, baby, you get the
- 29:15point. He'd also lost his friends. Gothu, a sharp detective, works
- 29:44for his clients on a strickly cash basis to provide for the needs of his
- 29:48nearest and nearest Gas Junior and Debbie. To them, he's the friendly magician,
- 29:53the fabulous hero, the giant among giants, the big guy. NBC

- 31:03Three Times Mean Good Time on NBC. Welcome back. You know his cellmate
- 31:19with that use of baby baby all the time kind of reminded me of Dick
- 31:25Fatal from ESPN's College Basketball Many many years, Mack. This episode raises a
- 31:34number of interesting issues. From the writing standpoint, I just could not see
- 31:40them sending Pappy in with a guard, promising apart and telling the guard to
- 31:48do whatever he's said, even though he is one of the more memorable characters
- 31:53we've had on the program. And of course for as a twenty first century
- 32:02people, they're in a twenty first century. We may find the idea of
- 32:07sitting down and reading your kids the story of Othello as a bedtime story perhaps
- 32:15a little bit of an odd choice. They're actually, it should be noted,
- 32:21were a couple of books that were in existence out at the time of
- 32:27this program, one by Edith Edith nest Bit called Beautiful Stories from Shakespeare and
- 32:38the other by Mary Lamb, which did actually look at shakespeare total level more
- 32:49that children could understand it. And it is somewhat interesting. We tend to
- 32:55think of the nineteen fifties as a period where kids were pretty well protected from
- 33:05negativity, harm, and some might even say reality. But in some ways,
- 33:13particularly with kids who are twelve and under, we've kind of changed our
- 33:21standards a little bit in terms of allowing of not allowing some things that would
- 33:29have been perfectly acceptable on juvenile programs in the nineteen fifties. I mean,
- 33:37the Adventures of Superman was a children's show. But I've lost count of the
- 33:45number of now to listener comments and feedback. And we have a listener voicemail
- 33:51on that vexing issue of a composer's name. Hi, Adam, missus timm
- 33:58and who saw in Arizona? And I believe the way you pronounced the name
- 34:02of the composer that you mentioned is Shastakovich. And I guess my four years
- 34:09of colleague Russian has finally come in handy for something thirty years later. Take
- 34:15care, Thanks Ken, well, and thank you for providing the name of
- 34:21Shastovich and your four years of college Russian apparently did better than my one semester.
- 34:30Thanks so much for the comment. Ken Rick also adds that Shastovich also
- 34:37wrote the gadfly used on Riley Ace of Spies. So there you go,
- 34:44and thank you so much both Ken and Rick. That will actually do it
- 34:49for today. Join us back here tomorrow we continue the Amy Bradshaw matter.
