Speaker 4: Lots to get to this morning. Coming up a little
• 1:29
Speaker 4: bit later on, Tim Brady from the Charleston Convention of
• 1:32
Speaker 4: Visitors Bureau will be joining us. What used to be
• 1:34
Speaker 4: known as the Super six in Wheeling is now the
• 1:37
Speaker 4: Super eight in Charleston, although legally I don't think you
• 1:39
Speaker 4: can call it the Super A. It's the high school
• 1:41
Speaker 4: football Championships presented by Toyota at Laidley Field, featuring the
• 1:45
Speaker 4: first game of noon on Friday. Now, what does all
• 1:47
Speaker 4: this have to do economically for the city of Charleston.
• 1:51
Speaker 4: For the first time in what thirty years? You know,
• 1:53
Speaker 4: we have the championships not in Wheeling, but in Charleston
• 1:55
Speaker 4: Friday and Saturday. We're going to talk to Tim Brady
• 1:57
Speaker 4: about that. Plus Charleston City councilan Emmitt Pepper is here.
• 2:00
Speaker 4: We have several different things on the dogget to discuss
• 2:02
Speaker 4: with Counselman Pepper coming up, But first I want to
• 2:05
Speaker 4: bring in now the folks from Astorgato and the Charleston
• 2:07
Speaker 4: Police Department. They are again this year tving up for
• 2:09
Speaker 4: their annual toy drive. They will be collected new and
• 2:12
Speaker 4: unwrapped toys tomorrow and Thursday at the Benny Keatam Shrine downtown.
• 2:17
Speaker 4: Between eleven and seven, I had David Payne from Charleston
• 2:20
  Speaker 4: Police Department.
• 2:20
Speaker 5: Dave, good morning, good morning, thanks for having us.
• 2:22
Speaker 4: And I got Rob King from astorg How are you sir?
• 2:25
  Speaker 4: I'm gonna have you scoot. I know we're a little
• 2:27
Speaker 4: cramped in here. It's not like the big studio was
• 2:29
Speaker 4: a little And we also have a man John Brown.
• 2:31
Speaker 4: How are you, buddy?
• 2:32
  Speaker 6: Going on?
• 2:32
Speaker 4: I'm doing fine, Thank you all for being here. All right,
• 2:35
Speaker 4: So Dave, I'll start with you, the Charleston Police Department
• 2:38
Speaker 4: teaming up with Astorgatto for this next two days. I mean,
• 2:42
Speaker 4: well it's tomorrow and Thursday, right.
• 2:44
Speaker 7: Correct, Yes, we're excited now so that we are kicking
• 2:47
Speaker 7: off our fifth annual CPD Wonderland Toy Drive. It'll start
• 2:49
Speaker 7: Tomorrow and Thursday from eleven to seven and we'll be
• 2:55
Speaker 7: there accepting toys for the kids.
• 2:57
Speaker 4: How many years is the Charleston Police Department been doing that?
• 2:59
Speaker 4: This is our fare and an astro god of Rob
• 3:03
Speaker 4: King is here and John Brown Robers talk talk to
• 3:06
Speaker 4: you about this. What does Astrogatto get out of this.
• 3:10
Speaker 8: It's really just something that our owner four years ago
• 3:13
Speaker 8: decided to get involved when Officer Cassie Johnson had been
• 3:18
Speaker 8: killed and he wanted to do something for the police
• 3:21
Speaker 8: department and the community. And each year we just like
• 3:25
Speaker 8: to see it grow bigger and bigger. We started out
• 3:27
Speaker 8: with around fifty kids and it was eight hundred last
• 3:30
Speaker 8: year and now we have a goal well over one thousand.
• 3:33
Speaker 4: And you guys just make it so easy to elect
• 3:35
Speaker 4: these toys because I mean, you know, the and and
• 3:38
Speaker 4: hats off in a big shout to the folks that
• 3:39
Speaker 4: the many keep him shrine because they're wonderful to do
• 3:41
Speaker 4: all kinds of different things in the community. But they've
• 3:44
Speaker 4: got that wonderful facility there and you don't even have
• 3:46
Speaker 4: to get out of your car. If I remember correctly
• 3:47
Speaker 4: with them last year. You just kind of pull up
• 3:49
Speaker 4: and drop them off, right.
• 3:49
Speaker 5: Correct, just pull up.
• 3:51
Speaker 7: Well, we'll have officers there to unload your packages for you,
• 3:54
Speaker 7: but we really would like to see the kids come
• 3:56
Speaker 7: also enjoy the bouncy houses that we'll have over there.
• 3:59
Speaker 5: We'll have sad over there.
• 4:01
Speaker 7: He arrives at noon tomorrow and he'll be coming at
• 4:03
Speaker 7: five thirty on Thursday, and we'll have the kids from
• 4:06
Speaker 7: the Discovery Center there tomorrow at noon to welcome Santa.
• 4:09
Speaker 4: Now, what is a Discovery Center? Explain that for those
• 4:11
  Speaker 4: who don't know.
• 4:11
  Speaker 5: It's just a like a preschool downtown.
• 4:14
Speaker 4: Okay, all right, so they're all gonna be there as well. John,
• 4:17
Speaker 4: sub bring you in here for a moment.
• 4:19
  Speaker 9: Uh.
• 4:20
Speaker 4: I know you love doing this sort of stuff, don't you,
• 4:22
  Speaker 4: a big guy?
• 4:22
Speaker 6: Yes, it's uh, it's pretty cool, you know, to try
• 4:25
Speaker 6: to give back to the community and help help the
• 4:27
Speaker 6: Charleston Police out and.
• 4:30
Speaker 5: Just just just giving back to kids.
• 4:31
Speaker 6: That's unfortunate that that won't be having anything under the
• 4:35
  Speaker 6: Christmas tree, but.
• 4:37
Speaker 4: You guys are gonna take care of that.
• 4:38
Speaker 5: Yeah, we don't try to.
• 4:39
Speaker 6: Yeah, So what he would put out there that we
• 4:41
Speaker 6: need to try to fill the astrog out of Charleston
• 4:45
  Speaker 6: car holder.
• 4:46
Speaker 5: So how long is it?
• 4:47
  Speaker 10: Rob About?
• 4:48
Speaker 6: How long is the car holder? It's about thirty two foot.
• 4:51
Speaker 6: So we got a lot of space to fill up
• 4:52
  Speaker 6: this year.
• 4:53
Speaker 4: So you know how many toys that is? I guess
• 4:54
Speaker 4: it all depends on what kind of toys they are.
• 4:56
Speaker 4: But yeah, how many? How many? If you if you
• 4:58
Speaker 4: look at the average I mean, so much smarter than
• 5:01
Speaker 4: I am to do this, if you looked at the
• 5:02
Speaker 4: average sized toy, all right, whatever that size may be,
• 5:06
Speaker 4: how many toys would you have had to fill it up? Dave,
• 5:08
  Speaker 4: you're you're a numbers guy, I would say.
• 5:11
Speaker 7: To fill that up. All that's a lot, but a
• 5:13
Speaker 7: lot of a lot. Yeah, that's a lot, maybe fifteen
• 5:16
  Speaker 7: thousand or so toys. I mean it's yeah, it's a
• 5:19
Speaker 7: big tall Yeah, yes, it's a long.
• 5:21
Speaker 5: Yeah. With the bikes and stuff, might fill it up.
• 5:24
Speaker 4: Okay, And now, and how do you get these to
• 5:26
Speaker 4: the kids? What's that process?
• 5:27
Speaker 7: Well, there's a there's an application process that we started
• 5:29
Speaker 7: actually on Sunday, and we accept a two hundred and
• 5:32
Speaker 7: fifty kids on Sunday. We had to close it down
• 5:34
Speaker 7: depending on how many toys and donations we get on
• 5:37
Speaker 7: our upcoming toy drive, will open it back up and
• 5:40
Speaker 7: they'll apply and then next week what we'll do is
• 5:42
Speaker 7: we'll go sort them, bag them, and the people that
• 5:45
Speaker 7: applied will come and pick them up next week.
• 5:47
Speaker 4: Okay again, we're talking about the Astorgado and Charleston Police
• 5:50
Speaker 4: Department Annual toy driving next Wednesday and Thursday over at
• 5:53
Speaker 4: the Benny Keaton Shrine. Remind you at the day Island

Speaker 4: and start your journey towards better health Today. Talk about
• 6:23
Speaker 4: the involvement of the community and this we know what
• 6:25
Speaker 4: Astorgato does and hats off to those folks that are
• 6:28
Speaker 4: wonderful to give back to several things in the community
• 6:30
Speaker 4: throughout the year, but talk about just the average folks day.
• 6:34
Speaker 7: Well, I mean, we really couldn't pull this off without
• 6:36
Speaker 7: the community. I mean, it's all through donations. We're just
• 6:39
Speaker 7: the people that actually get to see the smiles on
• 6:41
Speaker 7: the kid's face when they come pick up the toys.
• 6:42
Speaker 7: But really, if it wasn't for the community coming to
• 6:45
  Speaker 7: help support.
• 6:46
Speaker 5: Us, we couldn't pull this off at all.
• 6:47
Speaker 7: Like I said, we served a little over eight hundred
• 6:49
Speaker 7: children last year, and we're hoping to serve at least
• 6:52
Speaker 7: a thousand this year hopefully.
• 6:54
Speaker 4: Now, you guys and anybody can jump in here. All
• 6:56
Speaker 4: three of you can have been doing this for some time.
• 6:58
Speaker 4: You said that the fifth year the done this. I
• 7:01
Speaker 4: don't want to go into details about an individual, obviously
• 7:04
Speaker 4: a child's name or anything, but give me, give me
• 7:06
Speaker 4: a grive me a great story any of you about
• 7:09
Speaker 4: about one of the kids that you saw that really
• 7:12
Speaker 4: their face lit up when they when they got their toy,
• 7:14
Speaker 4: or or or some stories that you've heard maybe through
• 7:17
  Speaker 4: the process.
• 7:18
Speaker 5: Just sure sure. I mean it's there's several kids.
• 7:21
Speaker 7: I mean when they come even when the kids come
• 7:22
Speaker 7: with their parents that pick up their toys. Of course
• 7:24
  Speaker 7: they're bagged up. They can't see what's in. Yeah, I
• 7:26
Speaker 7: mean we have hundreds of kids that come over there
• 7:28
  Speaker 7: and they're just to see they're they're they're they're smiling
• 7:31
Speaker 7: their faces, you know.
• 7:32
Speaker 5: I mean, that's that that does it for us, you know.
• 7:33
Speaker 7: I mean, so there's really not one story yeah stands
• 7:36
Speaker 7: out because I'm sure they're all special.
• 7:38
Speaker 4: You know, they all are. Again, we're talking about the
• 7:40
Speaker 4: Charleston Police Department and the as Torgado Toy event which
• 7:43
Speaker 4: is going to be at the Benny Keatam Shrine tomorrow
• 7:46
Speaker 4: from eleven until and the next day two Thursday, from
• 7:48
Speaker 4: eleven until seven. And again when you come out for
• 7:51
Speaker 4: the event, guys, it's not just about the toys, like
• 7:53
Speaker 4: you said, Like like Payne said, You've got the you
• 7:56
Speaker 4: got bouncy houses, you got all kinds of cool stuff
• 7:58
Speaker 4: going on over there.
• 8:00
Speaker 7: Santa's there, say, they'll be there, be lit up with
• 8:03
Speaker 7: our lights. So you see the blue lights flashing in
• 8:05
Speaker 7: the in the corner over there, just drive up. Like
• 8:08
Speaker 7: I said, we have officers on hand to take your
• 8:10
Speaker 7: toys for you. We may even have a surprise gift
• 8:13
Speaker 7: for our first one hundred people that drop off toys.
• 8:16
Speaker 4: I think you did that last year, did first a
• 8:18
Speaker 4: surprise gift for the first one hundred people? Right, Okay,
• 8:22
Speaker 4: we don't. We're gonna keep it a surprise, right, Dave.
• 8:25
Speaker 4: I want to talk to you because you're kind of
• 8:27
Speaker 4: you know, you do so many things with the Charleston
• 8:28
Speaker 4: Police Department. But one of the things that you do,
• 8:30
Speaker 4: I don't know if it's on your business card or not,
• 8:32
  Speaker 4: is you're just you're you're kind of a community ambassador.
• 8:34
Speaker 4: You know, you're always out out there in the community,
• 8:38
Speaker 4: and sometimes you know, in our in our communities, the
• 8:42
Speaker 4: people only see the police when it's a bad thing,
• 8:44
Speaker 4: you know, when there's a crime that's been committed or whatever.
• 8:47
Speaker 4: This is so important to have events for a police
• 8:50
Speaker 4: department in the city like Charleston, to have events like
• 8:53
Speaker 4: that when they see that you're that you're actually giving
• 8:55
Speaker 4: back and that you're just trying to help.
• 8:56
Speaker 7: Oh, for sure. I mean that's we look forward to
• 8:59
Speaker 7: this really every year. All our officers look forward to this.
• 9:01
Speaker 7: We actually have presents or gifts that we give our
• 9:04
Speaker 7: officers and they take them out to their beats and
• 9:06
Speaker 7: they actually go up to children and just random children
• 9:08
Speaker 7: give them presents or knock on the door of a
• 9:11
Speaker 7: residence they've made that they visited in the past, you
• 9:13
Speaker 7: know what I mean, it may not have been so good,
• 9:15
Speaker 7: so they have a gift to give them this time.
• 9:17
Speaker 8: So that's my favorite thing about this is when the
• 9:20
Speaker 8: officers go out if we have extra toys after the fact,
• 9:24
Speaker 8: they drive around in one of the police trucks and
• 9:26
Speaker 8: kids will be walking down the street and they'll pick
• 9:28
Speaker 8: out a toy, or they'll go through different communities and
• 9:31
Speaker 8: give out toys in the faces and the excitement is
• 9:34
Speaker 8: just you can't get that.
• 9:36
Speaker 10: It doesn't get any better indeed.
• 9:38
Speaker 4: All right, so we got a lot of folks who
• 9:39
Speaker 4: listen to the show that maybe are in the business community,
• 9:42
Speaker 4: or maybe they're different time civic organizations or whatever. Put
• 9:46
Speaker 4: out the final plea to them to help output this well.
• 9:49
Speaker 7: Basically, you know, we don't want any kid to go
• 9:51
Speaker 7: without a present on Christmas. So that's the really the
• 9:53
Speaker 7: biggest thing here. They can go to our Facebook, our
• 9:56
Speaker 7: Facebook page, we actually have a link there that they
• 9:58
Speaker 7: can donate online if they can't make it to the
• 10:01
Speaker 7: our toy drive. But really we're here for the kids.
• 10:04
Speaker 7: We want to see every kid have a toy for Christmas.
• 10:07
Speaker 4: That's the whole idea. And again the hours are from
• 10:09
Speaker 4: eleven of seven at the many Keedom Shrine, one hundred
• 10:12
Speaker 4: Quarriyor Street near the College Team of Convention Center. Your
• 10:14
Speaker 4: gabs is going to be down there, Santa Claus is
• 10:16
Speaker 4: going to be their bouncy houses and more.
• 10:17
Speaker 6: John, if you got if you have any toys and
• 10:20
Speaker 6: you can't make it out to the Winter One in
• 10:23
Speaker 6: Land tomorrow and on Thursday, please reach out to me.
• 10:27
Speaker 6: A Rob King at Astrok Auto of Charleston. We have
• 10:30
Speaker 6: about thirty retired drivers at our dealership. You know they
• 10:33
Speaker 6: would come to if you're in Beckley, Huntington and you
• 10:36
Speaker 6: and you listen to the show and you just can't
• 10:38
Speaker 6: get up here, just to donate toys or pick up
• 10:40
  Speaker 6: a check up.
• 10:41
  Speaker 5: This calls.
• 10:42
Speaker 6: My cell phone number is three zero four four one

• 10:57

• 11:00
Speaker 8: dealership and we'll sun drivers or Donn or I will
• 11:03

• 11:06
  Speaker 8: the community.
• 11:07

• 11:09

Speaker 5: Good morning. Thanks for having me on counsel.

• 15:12
Speaker 4: give you an opportunity and I don't want to catch
• 15:14
Speaker 4: you out of left field here, but I don't want
• 15:15
Speaker 4: to give you an opportunity to do this because I
• 15:17
Speaker 4: saw something that you posted on social media about the
• 15:20
Speaker 4: death of former Supreme Court justice and Attorney General and
• 15:23
Speaker 4: all around political icon Daryl McGraw. You had shared a
• 15:29
Speaker 4: post on your social media about that. I hope I'm
• 15:31
Speaker 4: not getting through personal here, but what would you like
• 15:33
Speaker 4: to say about that?
• 15:34
  Speaker 9: Oh?
• 15:34
Speaker 5: Yeah, and I did.
• 15:36
Speaker 14: I have met him before, but I didn't know him
• 15:38
Speaker 14: person or anything. But my dad worked your dad yeast
• 15:40
  Speaker 14: with him.
• 15:41
  Speaker 5: Yeah, he was.
• 15:41
Speaker 14: He worked with with Judge McGraw when he was a
• 15:44
Speaker 14: judge and and so that was when I was a
• 15:47
Speaker 14: little baby. He was he was working there at the
• 15:48
Speaker 14: at the UH at the in the Capitol. They were
• 15:51
Speaker 14: working for Judge McGraw and had a great experience there.
• 15:53
Speaker 14: And so you know, he's a he has an icon
• 15:55
Speaker 14: or was an icon, and and I think he had
• 15:57
Speaker 14: made a really big positive impact on the state.
• 16:00
Speaker 4: I mean, he did, and he will certainly be missed.
• 16:01
Speaker 4: And I said yesterday when I had Mike Pushkin on
• 16:05
Speaker 4: the show, I said, I think when they write the
• 16:06
Speaker 4: book about West Virginia political figures over the years, you
• 16:11
Speaker 4: know you're gonna you're gonna talk about Robert Byrd, You're
• 16:13
Speaker 4: going to talk about the McGraw brothers. You're going to
• 16:15
Speaker 4: talk about Arch More and and Jay Rockefeller and so
• 16:19
Speaker 4: many of these other these just these I guess, these
• 16:22
Speaker 4: these larger than life characters. I guess, I guess.
• 16:25
Speaker 5: Yeah, it's definitely like a storybook sometimes.
• 16:28
Speaker 4: All right, So you spent a lot of time and
• 16:30
Speaker 4: you have on this show in the past talking about
• 16:33
  Speaker 4: rate increases.
• 16:34
Speaker 1: Uh, with the with the power company.
• 16:36
Speaker 4: Where do you want to go with this?
• 16:37
Speaker 14: Yeah, well, so folks probably remember several months back there
• 16:41
Speaker 14: was a really big rate increase proposed by I'm almost
• 16:44
Speaker 14: thirty dollars a month for MOSTO for most residential customers.
• 16:48
  Speaker 5: Uh.
• 16:48
Speaker 14: So that got dismissed due to a technical issue. Essentially,
• 16:52
Speaker 14: you had a son. I appreciate you doing that that's
• 16:55
Speaker 14: been reintroduced, resubmitted, So there's it's it's a little bit less,
• 17:00
Speaker 14: but it's still pretty significant. Twenty almost twenty four dollars
• 17:03
Speaker 14: a month rate increase from the twenty nine then it
• 17:08
Speaker 14: was before. And so this is this is called a
• 17:11
Speaker 14: base rate. So this is these cases last for some time.
• 17:15
Speaker 14: It will be in this next summer before this will
• 17:17
Speaker 14: be final. But you know, we're looking very closely at
• 17:21
Speaker 14: we've intervened in the case. They've also taught the companies
• 17:26
Speaker 14: have really talked up a proposal to kind of spread
• 17:29
Speaker 14: out the rate increase over a twenty year period and
• 17:33
Speaker 14: so that that may end up being some some cost
• 17:37
Speaker 14: savings for folks. We don't know exactly how much yet
• 17:41
Speaker 14: because the way they're proposing they do that is they
• 17:44
Speaker 14: have a separate case for part of the rate increase.
• 17:47
Speaker 5: That would come up in you know, next month, a
• 17:49
  Speaker 5: couple of months.
• 17:50
Speaker 4: So what do you hear from I mean, I know
• 17:53
Speaker 4: you have a lot of different hats in your life,
• 17:55
Speaker 4: but I'm gonna ask you from a city councilman perspective
• 17:57
Speaker 4: on this one, what do you hear from your constituents
• 17:59
Speaker 4: out there? By I mean nobody likes to pay it. Obviously,
• 18:01
Speaker 4: I completely understand that, because you're, in addition to being
• 18:04
Speaker 4: a council when you're also a consumer of power. We
• 18:07
Speaker 4: all are. But what do you hear when talking to
• 18:09
  Speaker 4: people out there?
• 18:10
Speaker 14: Yeah, I mean people are frustrated the rates just keep
• 18:12
  Speaker 14: going up. It's uh, it's it's very Uh it's gotten
• 18:16
Speaker 14: a lot more expensive. They've more than doubled in the
• 18:18
Speaker 14: last fifteen years, uh here in in this area for
• 18:22
Speaker 14: Apple Watching power customers. So it's it's been a significant increase.
• 18:26
Speaker 14: For folks who are have limited incomes, living on fixed incomes,
• 18:29
  Speaker 14: it's it's a it's a challenge. It's a real challenge.
• 18:32
Speaker 14: And of course, you know, uh, food's going up to
• 18:35
Speaker 14: and there's a lot of other things that have that
• 18:36
Speaker 14: have gone Uh. Costs have gone up, but I don't
• 18:39
Speaker 14: think much has gone up quite as much as our
• 18:41
  Speaker 14: electric rates.
• 18:43
Speaker 4: So let me play Devil's advocate here for a moment. Okay,
• 18:46
Speaker 4: it's the it's just the price. It's the cost of
• 18:48
Speaker 4: the price of doing business, you know, I mean, it's
• 18:50
  Speaker 4: costing them more.
• 18:52
  Speaker 15: Uh.
• 18:52
Speaker 4: And whether it's you know, the power company, whether it's water,
• 18:55
Speaker 4: whether it's gas, whatever, utility we're talking about, it costs
• 18:57
Speaker 4: them more to do business, so they have to pass
• 19:00
Speaker 4: those expenses onto someone.
• 19:02
Speaker 14: Your your comment to that, Yeah, So so what we
• 19:05
Speaker 14: our system is as a regulated monopoly, right, so we
• 19:07
Speaker 14: in exchange for getting having a monopoly where they're the
• 19:10
Speaker 14: only option that we have. What what we what happens
• 19:14
Speaker 14: is that the Public Service Commission and people like my
• 19:18
Speaker 14: clients are lots of different people can can weigh in
• 19:21
Speaker 14: and have experts and look in and to see whether
• 19:23
Speaker 14: these rates are really reasonable.
• 19:25
Speaker 5: And so that's that's the system that we have.
• 19:28
Speaker 14: And our issue is that, you know, our rates have
• 19:30
Speaker 14: gone up so much, we believe because the there's a
• 19:34
Speaker 14: lot of expensive power plants that we operate, that our
• 19:37
Speaker 14: utility operates, and instead of using the free market to
• 19:41
Speaker 14: buy their power, they're paying themselves to run those power plants.
• 19:44
Speaker 14: So and those the power plants are not running as
• 19:47
Speaker 14: cost competitive as you know other ones that could could
• 19:51
Speaker 14: be using the free market for and so that that's
• 19:54
Speaker 14: one of our major issues. And you know, as I mentioned,
• 19:57
Speaker 14: this is a system where it's a regulator. We and
• 20:00
Speaker 14: push and pull and look at it, and there's oversight
• 20:02
Speaker 14: by the Public Service Commission one of the proposals in
• 20:05
Speaker 14: this in this rate increase is that they would just
• 20:08
Speaker 14: be they call it a race stabilization surcharge, where they
• 20:12
Speaker 14: would be able to just increase rates three percent a
• 20:14
Speaker 14: year with essentially no over saying at all. And so
• 20:18
Speaker 14: that and I think that you know their spin on
• 20:21
Speaker 14: it is that you know this is going to be
• 20:22
Speaker 14: something that will be you know, that way that we
• 20:25
Speaker 14: don't have the big bumps, and there's a lot of
• 20:27
Speaker 14: rate increases every year, which is what happens. It's been
• 20:30
Speaker 14: three two to three four different cases every year. The
• 20:34
Speaker 14: race don't seem to go down too much. And so
• 20:38
Speaker 14: that's another concern we have in this proposal.
• 20:40
Speaker 4: Talking to him with Charleston City Councilman Emmitt Pepper, the
• 20:42
Speaker 4: Dave Allen Chilling five eighty line brought to you apart
• 20:44
Speaker 4: by Pinnacle Consultants. Pinnacle offers eight offers a four phase
• 20:48

Speaker 4: and management planning. Visit Pinnacle Corp dot net because what
• 20:54
Speaker 4: you don't know can hurt you. So before we move
• 20:57
Speaker 4: on to some other things, I got a few other
• 20:58
Speaker 4: things I want to talk to you about. Where do
• 21:00
Speaker 4: we go from here on this? And you kind of
• 21:01
Speaker 4: mentioned the beginning of the interview, what's what's the next
• 21:03
Speaker 4: step in this counciling.
• 21:05
Speaker 14: Yeah, yeah, so there's going to be so we have
• 21:06
  Speaker 14: a I'm part of a coalition called West Virginia's for
• 21:08
Speaker 14: Energy Freedom, So people go to Energy Freedom wv't out
• 21:11
Speaker 14: or they can engage in that. We're going to probably
• 21:13
Speaker 14: we're still kind of reading through it, but but I
• 21:16
Speaker 14: think we're pretty close to the point where we're going
• 21:18
Speaker 14: to have an ability for people to weigh in and
• 21:21
Speaker 14: make their voice heard at the Public Service Commission. That
• 21:24
Speaker 14: the last one little issue, that big issue that we're
• 21:26
Speaker 14: concerned with is there's also a proposal to make it
• 21:29
Speaker 14: much harder to go a solar in this So if
• 21:31
Speaker 14: you want to do something about your bills by going solar,
• 21:35
Speaker 14: that becomes harder too.
• 21:36
Speaker 5: We can We'll have more information about that online.
• 21:38
  Speaker 1: All right.
• 21:39
Speaker 4: So I want to move on to a couple other things.
• 21:40
Speaker 4: Number One, I know you're heavily involved in something with
• 21:44
Speaker 4: the First Presbyterian Church here in Charleston, and they did
• 21:46
Speaker 4: a Hope Village talk about that a little bit, because
• 21:49
Speaker 4: it's is it over?
• 21:49
  Speaker 16: It is over?
• 21:50
Speaker 4: But talk about it anyway.
• 21:52
Speaker 14: Yeah, yeah, So first, I mean, I'm not I'm not
• 21:54
Speaker 14: really that involved, but but I do go there and
• 21:58
Speaker 14: and it's a really cool thing folk, cause should check
• 22:00
Speaker 14: it out next year. It's not a fundraiser for the church,
• 22:04
  Speaker 14: but what it is is it's a it's a way
• 22:06
Speaker 14: for they want to part of the mission of the
• 22:08
Speaker 14: church is to help support folks around the world who
• 22:11
Speaker 14: are struggling, and so they they purchased food or different
• 22:15
Speaker 14: gift items, and there's some food and coffee. Actually you
• 22:18
Speaker 14: can go all year around and get fair trade coffee,
• 22:21
Speaker 14: a fair trade olive oil and stuff like that, and
• 22:24
Speaker 14: so this is a way if they kind of broaden
• 22:26
Speaker 14: that and have every you know, I think it was
• 22:29
Speaker 14: three or four weekends out of the year leading up
• 22:32
Speaker 14: to Thanksgiving where you know, people can come and buy stuff.
• 22:36
Speaker 14: And it supports small farmers, small businesses from around the
• 22:40
Speaker 14: world on places that are struggling, a lot of war
• 22:42
  Speaker 14: torn areas and.
• 22:43
  Speaker 5: Things like that.
• 22:43
Speaker 14: And actually some of the places that they use were
• 22:46
Speaker 14: actually were they provide services for folks overseas, but they're
• 22:51
Speaker 14: based on areas that got hit really heard by Hurricane Helene.
• 22:54
Speaker 14: So it was actually helping those entities as well. So anyway,
• 22:57
Speaker 14: it was a really cool thing.
• 22:59
Speaker 4: She put folks who check that out and we're talking
• 23:01
Speaker 4: about it after the fact. And that's but because you
• 23:03
Speaker 4: had reached out to me about it, and I just
• 23:05
Speaker 4: we just we couldn't get our schedule. It was election
• 23:07
Speaker 4: time and I get that to get you on, but
• 23:10
Speaker 4: I wanted to give an opportunity to talk about it
• 23:11
Speaker 4: as we move into next year. Countsman, I spent a
• 23:15
Speaker 4: little time last week talking about the proposed panhandling ordinance
• 23:19
Speaker 4: here in Charleston. Now I understand it has gone to committee.
• 23:21
Speaker 4: Now I had Countsman Chad Robinson on the show to
• 23:24
Speaker 4: talk about it last week. Mayor Goodwin was also on
• 23:26
Speaker 4: the show last week talking about it. Do you care
• 23:28
Speaker 4: to I mean, where are you.
• 23:30
  Speaker 2: On all this?
• 23:31
Speaker 5: Well, a couple of things.
• 23:32
Speaker 14: I mean, so one, I don't think this had happened
• 23:34
Speaker 14: when you had Chairman Robinson on last week or the mayor.
• 23:39
Speaker 14: There's a lawsuit was filed in against mon County who
• 23:44
Speaker 14: had a similar ordinances. I think both of them talked
• 23:46
Speaker 14: about last week, and so you know, from my perspective,
• 23:52
Speaker 14: you know, just I'm no expert on first Amendment law
• 23:56
  Speaker 14: or anything.
• 23:56
Speaker 5: But my reader, it is this.
• 23:59
Speaker 14: There's some First Amendment challenges there that might be you know,
• 24:02
Speaker 14: it is someone's right to be able to ask somebody
• 24:04
Speaker 14: for money. But so I think what we'll you know,
• 24:08
Speaker 14: my guess is that my strong inclination would be to
• 24:12
Speaker 14: just wait and see how the lawsuit plays out. But
• 24:15
Speaker 14: you know, I know that the chairman and the mayor
• 24:18
Speaker 14: are both very you know, committed to taking the time
• 24:21
Speaker 14: thinking it through. Let's let's think about all that different options.
• 24:24
Speaker 14: How do we do this in the way that's you know,
• 24:27
Speaker 14: protective of people's rights but also protective of everybody else's safety.
• 24:31
Speaker 4: And I mentioned this on the show before, and it's
• 24:33
Speaker 4: a very good point on your behalf there that when
• 24:35
Speaker 4: this has gone not only in West Virginia but across
• 24:37
Speaker 4: the country. You know, the frequently these laws, although maybe
• 24:42
Speaker 4: they're well intentioned, are are stricken down on First Amendment issues. However,
• 24:46
Speaker 4: it looks like this time around, what they're doing is
• 24:48
Speaker 4: they're trying to take it from a safety perspective, and
• 24:52
Speaker 4: that they're trying to say, okay, well, it's not about
• 24:54
Speaker 4: the person stopping you on the street and asking you
• 24:57
Speaker 4: for for change or whatever. It's about people standing in
• 25:01
Speaker 4: right of ways, it's about people standing next to highways
• 25:04
Speaker 4: and things of that nature. And it wouldn't only involved
• 25:06
Speaker 4: what you what you think of of just somebody asking
• 25:08
Speaker 4: you for spare change. This could involve political figures standing
• 25:12
Speaker 4: and holding signs up. You're a political figure, so you
• 25:16
Speaker 4: may not be able to stand up.
• 25:17
Speaker 14: I've been known to stand at the foot of the
• 25:19
Speaker 14: south side of bridge, which I think every you know,
• 25:21
  Speaker 14: look at every.
• 25:22
Speaker 4: And it could also have It could also get into
• 25:26
Speaker 4: those holding up a sign that says you know car washed,
• 25:29
Speaker 4: that you know the auto parts store straight ahead or
• 25:31
Speaker 4: or whatever. I mean, there's a lot of different things
• 25:34
Speaker 4: that could possibly yeah, play.
• 25:36
Speaker 14: Everybody's you know, the people who are proposing it are
• 25:39
Speaker 14: saying it is about panhandling, so yeah, I mean it'll
• 25:42
Speaker 14: be interesting to see, you know, smarter people than myself,
• 25:45
Speaker 14: judge clear up in the Northern District will be looking
• 25:47
Speaker 14: at this and the similar law up there. And you know,
• 25:50
Speaker 14: I think it would be problematic or expensive for us
• 25:54
Speaker 14: and not good use of taxpayer money to go into
• 25:57
Speaker 14: this while there's an opending lossuit.
• 25:59
Speaker 4: All right, what else is on your plate? What else
• 26:00
Speaker 4: you're looking at? As we close out the year, the
• 26:02
Speaker 4: time is yours. What else as a city Counciloran or
• 26:04
Speaker 4: anything else you want to talk about him?
• 26:06
  Speaker 2: It?
• 26:06
  Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I.
• 26:07
Speaker 5: Mean I think that.
• 26:09
  Speaker 1: Well.
• 26:09
Speaker 14: One thing that's that's going on in my life is
• 26:11
Speaker 14: that there's been a lot of movement. I've been able
• 26:14
Speaker 14: to help a lot of people in my private practice
• 26:16
Speaker 14: with student loan debt. There I've already gotten rid of
• 26:20
Speaker 14: one hundred and fifty thousand dollars worth of people's student
• 26:22
  Speaker 14: lown debt through a bankruptcy process. And it's a it's
• 26:25
Speaker 14: a it's an area of a lot of people think
• 26:26
Speaker 14: that you can't bankrupt student loans, but it's it's been
• 26:28
Speaker 14: helping out a lot of people, and people are struggling
• 26:31
Speaker 14: with student loans and it's gotten i mean from when
• 26:32
Speaker 14: you and I were in college, it's gotten to be
• 26:34
  Speaker 14: a lot worse.
• 26:35
  Speaker 4: It's it's you can't look I'm one of those people.
• 26:37
Speaker 4: I'm a kid of the I went to college in
• 26:40
Speaker 4: the started in the late eighties and through the early nineties,
• 26:43
Speaker 4: and I can easily say, you know, I can I
• 26:45
Speaker 4: can be that guy, which I frequently am on the
• 26:47
Speaker 4: show counsel on you know, somebody that looks back goes
• 26:49
Speaker 4: well in my day. To be fair, it's not the
• 26:52
Speaker 4: same world. It's not the same and I need to
• 26:55
Speaker 4: do a better job of that as saying, you know,
• 26:57
Speaker 4: when I went to college in nineteen eighty eight, it's
• 26:59
Speaker 4: not the same that that people that are looking at
• 27:02
Speaker 4: these student loan debts from twenty fourteen twenty fifteen went through.
• 27:06
  Speaker 4: It's it's a totally different What's what's the percentage that
• 27:08
Speaker 4: it's that the rates of race since then.
• 27:10
Speaker 14: In many cases, I don't know this percentage of the
• 27:13
Speaker 14: rates off the top of my head, but I know that,
• 27:15
Speaker 14: you know, the student un debt has ballooned in the past,
• 27:17
Speaker 14: you know, decade or two, and so you know, I've
• 27:20
Speaker 14: had people come in, who's seventy year old guy, Actually
• 27:23
Speaker 14: he was going to school in the late nineties and
• 27:25
Speaker 14: early two thousands, and he still has student on debt
• 27:29
Speaker 14: from a significant amount of it from from way back then.
• 27:32
Speaker 5: And and so these are people who you know, when
• 27:35
  Speaker 5: does it end?
• 27:36
  Speaker 12: You know?
• 27:36
Speaker 5: And so we're able to help people with that, which
• 27:38
  Speaker 5: is great.
• 27:39
Speaker 4: All right, Well, keep doing good things in city council.
• 27:42
Speaker 4: I know that, you know, Charleston has such a large
• 27:44
Speaker 4: city council, and you've got a variety of different voices,
• 27:47
Speaker 4: and you stand up for different areas and some are
• 27:50
Speaker 4: at large, and you know you're working with the mayor
• 27:52
Speaker 4: and so on and so forth. But I think that
• 27:53
Speaker 4: the overall, I think there's a lot of exciting things
• 27:55
Speaker 4: going on in Charleston, and I know as we head
• 27:57
Speaker 4: into twenty twenty five, you're going to continue to see
• 27:59

• 31:17
Speaker 4: Mars show, State Senator Glen Jefferies is going to join us.
• 31:19
Speaker 4: There's been a lot of talk about economic development here
• 31:22
Speaker 4: as of late in West Virginia and some things that
• 31:23
Speaker 4: were supposed to happen with the special session, well there
• 31:27
Speaker 4: ended up not being a special session. It was just interims.
• 31:29
Speaker 4: I don'tant to see just interims because interims are continuing today.
• 31:33
Speaker 4: But I'm going to talk to Sindra Glen Jeffries about
• 31:35
Speaker 4: some things along that along that line of thinking when
• 31:40
Speaker 4: it comes to economic development, things of that nature. He'll
• 31:42
Speaker 4: be on the show tomorrow. Plus Jay Silverman's going to
• 31:44
Speaker 4: be here now. Like a lot of us, Jay wears
• 31:46
Speaker 4: a lot of hats. He's of course with the Charleston
• 31:49
Speaker 4: Dirty Birds as they continue with the Selango Law Light
• 31:51
Speaker 4: the Night Over at Gomart Ballpark. He's also got this
• 31:54
Speaker 4: YouTube channel, have Fun where as best I've been able
• 31:57
Speaker 4: to ascertain, he drives all over West Virginia and eats
• 31:59
Speaker 4: things pretty cool gig if you can get it. A
• 32:02
Speaker 4: Jay is also a part of a worldwide organization that
• 32:04
Speaker 4: does a lot of good for people, and that is
• 32:07
Speaker 4: the Moose Organization. We're going to talk to Jay about
• 32:09
Speaker 4: that coming up on the show tomorrow, plus Connawk Countychemissy
• 32:12
Speaker 4: Benceulango will be stopping by as well. This Friday and Saturday.
• 32:17
Speaker 4: The eyes of the sports world in West Virginia and
• 32:19
Speaker 4: maybe maybe we could take the focus off the change
• 32:22
Speaker 4: in the football coaches in both Morgantown and Huntington. We
• 32:25
Speaker 4: can focus on the field and also not in the
• 32:27
Speaker 4: courtroom to talk about. Well, you used to be known
• 32:29
Speaker 4: as the Super six. Now it's This is the high
• 32:30
Speaker 4: school football state title games for years in Wheelings starting
• 32:34
Speaker 4: Friday continuing into Saturday, championships are back in Charleston. Tim
• 32:38
Speaker 4: Brady's with the Charleston Convention of Visitors Bureau, and he
• 32:40
Speaker 4: joined us now to talk about Tim. Good morning, welcome
• 32:42
  Speaker 4: to the show.
• 32:42
Speaker 5: Thanks for having me, Dave. Always a pleasure to be here, brother.
• 32:45
Speaker 4: And so after a week or so delay in the courts,
• 32:49
Speaker 4: we finally got it worked out. We're ready to play football.
• 32:51
Speaker 4: First game Friday at noon. I've seen and I've heard
• 32:55
Speaker 4: some of your other interviews with Fred and different people
• 32:57
Speaker 4: about this, but talk about that delay process, what that
• 32:59
Speaker 4: was like through no fault of your own, obviously, you
• 33:01
Speaker 4: know when you had that delay in the court system
• 33:04
Speaker 4: and you're like, Okay, what are we going to do here?
• 33:06
Speaker 4: Luckily we got it worked out. Didn't cause too big
• 33:08
Speaker 4: We're prob. But talk about that from the city's perspective.
• 33:12
Speaker 4: Let's let's just kind of get into that.
• 33:13
Speaker 5: Sure. So first and foremost, I'm glad you said there's
• 33:17
Speaker 5: certainly nothing, nothing that had nothing to do with it.
• 33:20
Speaker 5: It would have had still would have been delayed a week. Now,
• 33:24
Speaker 5: here's what I will say. The one week delay in
• 33:28
Speaker 5: hosting the West Virginia State High School Football Championships presented
• 33:32
Speaker 5: by Toyota that's the official name that's the official name.
• 33:34
Speaker 5: Had to work that in, just like a good NASCAR driver.
• 33:36
Speaker 5: I had to get my plugs in, you know. To
• 33:40
Speaker 5: be honest, David, it really didn't impact us that much.
• 33:44
Speaker 5: It the field was still available, you know, the the hotels.
• 33:49
Speaker 5: The one issue that we bumped into, and we really
• 33:52
Speaker 5: got this put to bed yesterday was hotel rooms because
• 33:55
Speaker 5: now the state high school Football Championships, presented by Toyota,
• 33:59
Speaker 5: are being at the same time as the West Virginia
• 34:02
Speaker 5: State High School Cheer Championships taking place this Saturday at
• 34:07
Speaker 5: the Charleston Coliseum. So you had cheer rooms that were
• 34:10
Speaker 5: booked months ago, and we had a full plan laid
• 34:14
Speaker 5: out for where teams that qualified for football housing would
• 34:17
Speaker 5: be placed had it happened last weekend. We had to
• 34:20
Speaker 5: kind of mix and match and move some puzzle pieces
• 34:23
Speaker 5: around throughout the day yesterday to make sure that all
• 34:25
Speaker 5: the teams that needed rooms had the rooms that they needed.
• 34:28
Speaker 5: So once we got that worked out, it was really
• 34:30
Speaker 5: just taking the plans from the initial week and translating
• 34:33
Speaker 5: everything to the following week. So for us, logistically, aside
• 34:37
Speaker 5: from hotel rooms, it wasn't that big of a deal.
• 34:40
Speaker 4: Talk about the process of getting the championships here because
• 34:44
Speaker 4: then Wheeling for so many years. Yep, and they're back
• 34:49
Speaker 4: in Charleston talk about how that whole process.
• 34:52
Speaker 5: So, yeah, they had been in Wheeling for thirty years.
• 34:56
Speaker 5: And I'm going to say from jump and I hope,
• 35:00
Speaker 5: hope that folks from from Wheeling. I've said this many
• 35:03
Speaker 5: times and I want to make sure that I that
• 35:05
Speaker 5: I stress it. Wheeling did a fantastic job with this
• 35:09
Speaker 5: with this event in a lot of ways, they really
• 35:12
Speaker 5: created the template and set the bar for what the
• 35:15
Speaker 5: expectation was from a host committee for this event. Wheeling
• 35:19
Speaker 5: did an outstanding job with it. However, the wvs SAC
• 35:24
Speaker 5: decided to put the the championships out to bid, and
• 35:28
Speaker 5: there were I believe four bid presentations from host cities,
• 35:34
Speaker 5: actually four bids, five cities. Charleston bid and one Wheeling
• 35:39
Speaker 5: bid on the event. Bluefield also bid on the event,
• 35:42
Speaker 5: and then there was a combined bid from Morgantown and
• 35:46
Speaker 5: Huntington that would have split the game every other year
• 35:51
Speaker 5: between WVU and Marshall. So there were four bids and
• 35:55
Speaker 5: we put together what we thought was a competitive bid
• 35:57
Speaker 5: and we went into the bid process and and won it.
• 36:00
Speaker 5: So everyone had the opportunity to present. There were site
• 36:03
Speaker 5: visits by the WVSSEEC staff and some of their board
• 36:07
Speaker 5: members to all of the facilities, and through the process
• 36:11
Speaker 5: we walked away having won the event for the next
• 36:14
Speaker 5: three years with the mutual option for the fourth.
• 36:17
Speaker 4: So when people come out to these and it's kind
• 36:19
Speaker 4: of an interesting if you look at the teams that
• 36:21
Speaker 4: are in this you have some teams from our listening area,
• 36:26
Speaker 4: the Charles Jerry of course, you got Herbert Hoover, and
• 36:29
Speaker 4: you know we've got Rohan County. We talked about them
• 36:31
Speaker 4: during the break. But then you've got some schools coming
• 36:33
Speaker 4: down that are not so close to here. You're stomping
• 36:36
Speaker 4: grounds up in Bridgeport and the two schools that I
• 36:39
Speaker 4: think are like fifteen miles apart over in the Eastern Panhandle,
• 36:43
Speaker 4: but they're going to pack up buses and come down
• 36:44
Speaker 4: here to play the game.
• 36:46
Speaker 5: And that happened did in the past as well. Yeah,
• 36:48
Speaker 5: I just think because I used to and Fred jokes
• 36:50
Speaker 5: with me. Fred Persinger jokes with me all the time.
• 36:52
Speaker 5: I used to red hat the Super six when it
• 36:55
Speaker 5: was in Wheeling for years, worked on the sidelines and
• 36:58
Speaker 5: was the radio and TV time I'm out coordinator working
• 37:01
Speaker 5: with the with the referees, and I distinctly remember Triple
• 37:05
Speaker 5: A championship games between Capitol in South Charlestown where they
• 37:09
Speaker 5: would load the buses and go to Wheeling. So the
• 37:11
Speaker 5: goal of the host committee and to that point is
• 37:14
Speaker 5: to make it like a bowl game. So even if
• 37:16
Speaker 5: you are local, it is still special.
• 37:18
  Speaker 1: Uh.
• 37:18
Speaker 5: And I'll talk more about that in a minute, but
• 37:20
Speaker 5: when you talk about the schools that are coming in,
• 37:22
Speaker 5: you know, it's really exciting to get a team like
• 37:24
Speaker 5: Cameron that's never played in the state championship before. So
• 37:27
Speaker 5: Cameron's coming, They're excited. They're coming down for two days.
• 37:30
Speaker 5: Cameron's a cool story because they play on Friday at noon.
• 37:34
Speaker 5: Their cheerleaders compete on Saturday at the coliseum in the
• 37:38
Speaker 5: State Cheer Championship. So their football team is staying an
• 37:41
Speaker 5: extra night on their own dimes so that their football
• 37:44
Speaker 5: players can be at the coliseum on Saturday stuff to
• 37:47
Speaker 5: cheer on their their classmates and their and their their cheerleaders.
• 37:51
Speaker 5: So you know that's cool. So you've got Cameron and Muhamma,
• 37:54
Speaker 5: You've got Double A. Rohan County has never been there.
• 37:56
Speaker 5: Spencer High School way back in the day, had but
• 37:59
Speaker 5: Rohan County High School never been there. Taking on a
• 38:02
Speaker 5: very good, very good, very motivated Frankfurt team Triple A,
• 38:05
Speaker 5: I think is to me the most intriguing matchup. And
• 38:07
Speaker 5: I'm trying to keep those, by the way, Dave, trying
• 38:09
Speaker 5: to keep those Bridgeport ties.
• 38:11
  Speaker 4: On the d l okay.
• 38:12
Speaker 5: You know, I don't want the Hoover folks knowing that
• 38:15
Speaker 5: I have those old Bridgeport times.
• 38:16
Speaker 4: Tam Brady is from Bridgeport to Bridgeport, Texas's Bridgeport, Texas.
• 38:20
Speaker 5: Bridgeport, Connecticut. Yeah, I did Bridgeport High School football on
• 38:24
Speaker 5: the radio for over a decade before I moved to Charleston.
• 38:27
Speaker 5: That's a very good football team. This Hoover team is
• 38:29
Speaker 5: really good too. That's gonna be a great matchup. Yeah,
• 38:31
Speaker 5: and Hoover. I think the best crowd of the weekend,
• 38:35
Speaker 5: my guess is gonna be on Saturday at noon when
• 38:38
Speaker 5: Hoover plays Bridgeport, because I think everybody from the Elk
• 38:41
Speaker 5: River is going to be in Charlestown at Ladleyfield. And
• 38:44
Speaker 5: then we've got that other matchup, the one that you
• 38:46
Speaker 5: talked about. Two schools fifteen miles apart, Spring Millsen and
• 38:49
Speaker 5: Martinsburg and they played earlier in the year. It's a
• 38:51
Speaker 5: really good game. So we're expecting for really good games.
• 38:54
Speaker 5: But when the teams show up, you know, again making
• 38:56
Speaker 5: it more like a bowl game. The teams that want
• 39:00
Speaker 5: team meals, we're providing team meals. Some of the hotels
• 39:04
Speaker 5: are hosting team meals. Buffalo Wild Wings is hosting a
• 39:07
Speaker 5: team meal. The Eagles Nest at Little Creek Country Club
• 39:10
Speaker 5: is hosting a team meal for us. So the teams travel,
• 39:13
Speaker 5: Herbert Hoover is going to take their whole team to
• 39:16
Speaker 5: uh Solango Law light the night at Gomart Ballpark on
• 39:20
Speaker 5: Thursday evening and enjoy that as a team. And then
• 39:23
Speaker 5: when the teams show up, they drop their equipment off
• 39:26
Speaker 5: before the game day, all of their uniforms, their helmets
• 39:30
Speaker 5: will be shined, their shoes will be shined, their lockers
• 39:33
Speaker 5: will be hung. We're we're making it like a true
• 39:35
Speaker 5: bowl game environment. When the teams walk into their locker room,
• 39:38
  Speaker 5: there's a there's a sense of arrival. It's a championship
• 39:41
Speaker 5: atmosphere for the teams. So even though those two schools
• 39:43
Speaker 5: from the Eastern Panhandle are very familiar with each other
• 39:46
Speaker 5: and close together, they show up here and it's really
• 39:49
Speaker 5: it's a bowl game atmosphere for them.
• 39:51
Speaker 4: Totally different environment. The Dave Islands showing five any live
• 39:53
Speaker 4: bronshe part by Bridge Valley. If you're interested in to
• 39:56

• 40:12
Speaker 4: brought up to me something the other day about parking. Yep,
• 40:15
Speaker 4: because you know we are at lately and a lot
• 40:18
Speaker 4: of state employees this I'm talking about Friday now, Friday
• 40:20
Speaker 4: at noon, a lot of state employees, Uh use that facility.
• 40:24
  Speaker 18: What are you?
• 40:24
Speaker 5: What are we looking at? Here's for as parking gohoes team.
• 40:27
Speaker 5: So Friday at noon is really our one parking challenge.
• 40:31
Speaker 5: You know, anybody from the state that wants to take
• 40:33
Speaker 5: the day off, I would encourage them, But no, there
• 40:37
Speaker 5: is there there's still there's still Laidley Field Parking. Uh,
• 40:41
Speaker 5: there is on Street parking in the neighborhoods around UH.
• 40:44
Speaker 5: Lately there's also UH parking on Washington Street and down
• 40:51
Speaker 5: toward the east end you can park off of Piedmont there.
• 40:56
Speaker 5: There's parking available Friday at and it is going to
• 41:00
Speaker 5: be a challenge. We do anticipate a big crowd from Muhammad,
• 41:03
Speaker 5: We do anticipate a big crowd from from Cameron, but
• 41:10
Speaker 5: we feel like we've got the parking worked out. There
• 41:12
Speaker 5: will be some signers. They'll be UH Charleston Police officer
• 41:15
Speaker 5: and Kenall County Sheriff's officer presence in the neighborhood. We
• 41:20
Speaker 5: do feel like we've got the parking worked out and
• 41:22
Speaker 5: enough directional signage and traffic direction to get people where
• 41:26
Speaker 5: they need to be.
• 41:26
Speaker 4: All right and UH And if you're listening to us
• 41:29
Speaker 4: in any of those areas over in you know where
• 41:31
Speaker 4: Wahamma High School is in Mason County or whatever, carpool
• 41:34
Speaker 4: it would help us out a whole lot of trust
• 41:35
  Speaker 4: if you could.
• 41:35
Speaker 5: Carpooling would would certainly help.
• 41:38
Speaker 4: Are they doing team buses? I mean, and the team
• 41:43
Speaker 4: buses We've got parking office for fans is what I'm
• 41:46
Speaker 4: at for the fans.
• 41:47
Speaker 5: Oh sure. But if if they come in a bus,
• 41:49
Speaker 5: we've got bus parking off of Hansford Street and then
• 41:51
Speaker 5: we'll get them in to the stadium from that direction.
• 41:56
Speaker 4: Okay, let's before we let you go, let's talk about
• 41:58
Speaker 4: economic impact of this. I mean, these people are going
• 42:00
Speaker 4: to come in and you know a lot of them,
• 42:02
Speaker 4: you know, the people from Hoover and so on, and
• 42:04
Speaker 4: the driveable they one and are far from here. They're
• 42:07
Speaker 4: probably going to go to the game and maybe go
• 42:08
Speaker 4: back home. But we do hope that they come to
• 42:11
Speaker 4: downtown Charleston. You mentioned the Selango law light the night. Uh,
• 42:14
Speaker 4: we do hope that they'll go downtown and heat. Talking
• 42:17
Speaker 4: about fans now more than players. Obviously some are going
• 42:20
Speaker 4: to be staying in hotels. Let's talk about economic impact here.
• 42:23
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 42:24
Speaker 5: I'll be really interested following the event to run the
• 42:27
Speaker 5: numbers and see what the real economic impact of this
• 42:29
  Speaker 5: event is.
• 42:30
  Speaker 1: You know.
• 42:31
Speaker 5: The the one nice thing about having those teams from
• 42:33
Speaker 5: the Eastern Panhandle, and you know, we've got we've got
• 42:36
Speaker 5: four teams that qualified for housing under the wvs SEC's formula,
• 42:40
Speaker 5: and that's Martinsburg, spring Mill, Frankfort, and Cameron and they're
• 42:43
Speaker 5: all all of the teams are staying two nights. We
• 42:46
Speaker 5: anticipate that their fans are going to come and they're
• 42:48
Speaker 5: going to at least spend one night in Charleston. I
• 42:52
Speaker 5: do know that between the Football Championships presented by Toyota
• 42:56
Speaker 5: and the cheer Championships, that our hotels are full. I
• 43:00
Speaker 5: mean I spent an hour on the phone yesterday trying
• 43:03
Speaker 5: to find hotel rooms for the Martinsburg football team because
• 43:07
Speaker 5: everything was taken up with cheerleading and other things happening
• 43:11
Speaker 5: in the city. We got it worked out, but hotels
• 43:14
Speaker 5: are full this weekend. It's going to be a great
• 43:16
Speaker 5: weekend in the city of Charleston because you know you
• 43:19
Speaker 5: mentioned Gomart ballparking light the night. We've got Holly Jolly
• 43:22
Speaker 5: Brawley going on. There's holiday activities happening at Capital Market
• 43:27
Speaker 5: Friday and Saturday, and we've got these two massive sporting competitions,
• 43:33
Speaker 5: high school sporting competitions going on. It's going to be
• 43:35
Speaker 5: a great weekend in the city of Charleston, all right, Tim,
• 43:39
Speaker 5: hats off to you and the city and everything that
• 43:41
Speaker 5: you did in getting this here. Now it's go time.
• 43:43
Speaker 5: I do want to say, just allow me one more thing.
• 43:46
Speaker 5: Certainly couldn't do this without the partnership and the support
• 43:50
Speaker 5: of the City of Charleston. May Marry Me. Goodwin and
• 43:52
Speaker 5: her staff also want to say, couldn't be done without
• 43:55
Speaker 5: the Kanall County Board of Education. They actually own Lesley Field,
• 43:59
Speaker 5: the upride aids that have been done there, press box,
• 44:02
Speaker 5: completely renovated and expanded, locker rooms, completely renovated, soup to nuts.
• 44:09
Speaker 5: They've done a massive amount of work there, including installing
• 44:12
Speaker 5: a new JumboTron. Those help us, but the football Championships
• 44:17
Speaker 5: coming here with the impetus to get these improvements made,
• 44:20
Speaker 5: but they will benefit the community for many, many years
• 44:23
Speaker 5: to come and the kids that grow up here and
• 44:25
Speaker 5: play on that field. So really have to say thank
• 44:28
Speaker 5: you to the Kenall County Board of Education. I've worked
• 44:31
Speaker 5: closely with doctor Paula Potter, but I know that the
• 44:35
Speaker 5: entire board staff has been supportive of this, so really
• 44:38
Speaker 5: have to thank them for their support and help in
• 44:40
  Speaker 5: this effort.
• 44:41
Speaker 4: Tim good Luck. I was joking with Tim as we
• 44:43
Speaker 4: were walking down the steps this morning. I said, Hey,
• 44:44
Speaker 4: you want to go grab a beer, go grab some
• 44:47
Speaker 4: lunch or something this week because you don't have anything
• 44:48
  Speaker 4: else going on.

• 47:56
Speaker 4: our legislature unanimously passed not just one, but two bills
• 48:00
Speaker 4: directing and funding the Capitol Building Commission and Commission on
• 48:03
Speaker 4: the Arts to design and to build a monument for
• 48:05
Speaker 4: our fallen Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. The legislatively directed deadline
• 48:12
Speaker 4: that Governor Justice signed for the monument's completion is December
• 48:15
Speaker 4: thirty first, twenty twenty four. These people haven't even started.
• 48:18
Speaker 4: They've completely pushed our veterans to the back burner. Please
• 48:21
Speaker 4: have someone from these commissions on your show to provide
• 48:24
Speaker 4: an explanation and an apology to our West Virginia veterans, communities,
• 48:28
Speaker 4: and the legislature and governor for ignoring their deadlines. See
• 48:32
Speaker 4: what I can do about that, Texas. The panhandling ordinance
• 48:35
Speaker 4: is obviously targeted to the homeless. If it was about
• 48:38
Speaker 4: girl Scouts, politicians, etc. Why wasn't it proposed before? There
• 48:42
Speaker 4: have been so many political hacks sending in dangerous intersections
• 48:45
Speaker 4: and roads for years. I've said, you know with this
• 48:49
Speaker 4: that this could have unintended consequences. I'm not saying I'm
• 48:53
Speaker 4: for it or against. I just want to actually I
• 48:55
Speaker 4: will say I'm for it, but I want to make
• 48:58
Speaker 4: sure it's done correctly because it's been stricken down in
• 49:02
Speaker 4: court case after court case after court case on First
• 49:05
Speaker 4: Amendment issues. So I think that that's something that is
• 49:08
Speaker 4: very important, is that to be done correctly. And I
• 49:10
Speaker 4: think that's what they're doing this time around. We shall
• 49:12
Speaker 4: see Texas Dave. I want to thank the City of
• 49:14
Speaker 4: Charleston and the Kannaha County Commission for fighting the utility
• 49:17
Speaker 4: companies out of control rate hikes because our legislators won't
• 49:21
Speaker 4: do anything, or the Public Services Commission. I want to
• 49:24
Speaker 4: get into this a little bit more tomorrow with Knaana
• 49:26
Speaker 4: County Commissioner Bensolango, who's going to stop by tomorrow. Aaron
• 49:29
Speaker 4: Parker has a story posted about at wv metronews dot com.
• 49:32
Speaker 4: There's going to be a new bidder for the Canaha
• 49:34
Speaker 4: County Judicial Building renovation project. Now you will recall that
• 49:37
Speaker 4: the original bids came in at about sixteen million dollars,
• 49:41
Speaker 4: which was about three million over what the county commissioners
• 49:45
Speaker 4: had hoped for. Now this is all being done because
• 49:48
Speaker 4: the legislature has added three more magistrates and an additional
• 49:51
Speaker 4: circuit judge position, and they're simply out of space.
• 49:56
  Speaker 5: Now.
• 49:56
Speaker 4: It's going to be discussed at the next County Commission meeting,
• 50:01
Speaker 4: which will be on Thursday, and again I'm going to
• 50:02
Speaker 4: have County Commission Benzolango on the show to talk about it.
• 50:05
Speaker 4: Do you want to get this in here? A little
• 50:06
Speaker 4: programming note our coverage of high school basketball. Believe it
• 50:10
Speaker 4: or not, Jeff and I were talking about this earlier.
• 50:13
Speaker 4: It's that time or high school basketball. Well, college is
• 50:16
Speaker 4: already underway, but high school basketball gets underway for us.
• 50:19
Speaker 4: Tonight we will have our first game of the season
• 50:21
Speaker 4: as Capital. We'll be traveling to South Charleston. Airtime here
• 50:23
Speaker 4: in WCCHS is at seven o'clock tonight. Interims will continue
• 50:28
Speaker 4: and we'll wrap up today at the Capitol. One of
• 50:29
Speaker 4: the things covered yesterday had to do with the behavioral
• 50:33
Speaker 4: issues in the classrooms. Now, I remember reading several years
• 50:37
Speaker 4: ago that in like the nineteen fifties or something, the
• 50:40
Speaker 4: biggest problems that teachers face in the classrooms were things
• 50:43
Speaker 4: like talking, guilty, party here, chewing gum, dress code violations, etc.
• 50:48
  Speaker 18: Etc.
• 50:49
Speaker 4: If you have kids or grandkids in public school now,
• 50:52
Speaker 4: or maybe you know someone who works in the public
• 50:54
Speaker 4: school system. Now, it's a totally different world. And yesterday
• 50:59
Speaker 4: under the Dome, lawmakers got an earful of what educators
• 51:03
Speaker 4: face on a daily basis. A little background here, it's
• 51:08
Speaker 4: believed that this coming session, lawmakers are going to be
• 51:11
Speaker 4: looking at some bills that would allow elementary school teachers
• 51:14
Speaker 4: to remove disruptive students from their classrooms. Now, the bill
• 51:18
Speaker 4: was originally introduced during last year's session, but it kind
• 51:22
Speaker 4: of got tied up in committees and they had to
• 51:25
Speaker 4: go back and forth between in the House and so
• 51:26
Speaker 4: on and so forth, and they ended up not getting done.
• 51:28
Speaker 4: They ran out of time. Dave Wilson TJ. Meadows are
• 51:30
Speaker 4: going to get into this further on talk line today.
• 51:32
Speaker 4: Some of the instructors told some horrific stories from the
• 51:36
Speaker 4: classrooms of West Virginia schools yesterday, and I think in
• 51:40
Speaker 4: talking to TJ and Wilson, they're actually going to plan
• 51:43
Speaker 4: on playing some of the sound from those. I heard
• 51:45
Speaker 4: it this morning and yesterday afternoon, just incredible. Educators talked
• 51:50
Speaker 4: about being spat upon, about having objects thrown at them,
• 51:53
Speaker 4: being kicked in the face, et cetera, et cetera. You know,
• 51:57
Speaker 4: every kid is entitled to an education, but something here
• 52:01
Speaker 4: has has got to give it absolutely has to And
• 52:04
Speaker 4: a Senate Education Chair, Amy Grady, who herself is an
• 52:07
Speaker 4: elementary teacher, is going to join talk line to talk
• 52:10
Speaker 4: about it today. Also on the show today, State Auditor
• 52:12
Speaker 4: and Attorney General J.
• 52:13
  Speaker 8: JW.
• 52:13

Speaker 4: can call it the Super bra It's the high school
• 54:38
Speaker 4: football Championships, presented by Toyota at Laidley Field, featuring the
• 54:42
Speaker 4: first game a noon on Friday. Now, what does all
• 54:44
Speaker 4: this have to do economically for the city of Charleston.
• 54:48
Speaker 4: For the first time in what thirty years? You know,
• 54:50
Speaker 4: we have the championships not in Wheeling, but in Charleston
• 54:52
Speaker 4: Friday and Saturday, We're going to talk to Tim Brady
• 54:54
Speaker 4: about that. Plus Charleston City councilan Emmitt Pepper is here.
• 54:57
Speaker 4: We have several different things in the doget to discuss
• 54:59
Speaker 4: with Counselman Pepper coming up. But first I want to
• 55:02
Speaker 4: bring in now the folks from Astorgato and the Charleston
• 55:04
Speaker 4: Police Department. They are again this year tving up for
• 55:07
Speaker 4: their annual toy drive. They will be collected new and
• 55:09
Speaker 4: unwrapped toys tomorrow and Thursday at the Benny Keatam Shrine downtown.
• 55:14
Speaker 4: Between eleven and seven, I had David Payne from Charleston
• 55:17
Speaker 4: Police Department. Dave, good morning, good morning, thanks for having us.
• 55:19
Speaker 4: And I got Rob King from astorg How are you sir.
• 55:22
  Speaker 4: I'm gonna have you scoot. I know we're a little
• 55:24
Speaker 4: cramped in here. It's not like the big studio was
• 55:26
Speaker 4: a little And we also have a man John Brown.
• 55:28
Speaker 4: How are you, buddy?
• 55:29
  Speaker 6: Going on?
• 55:29
Speaker 4: I'm doing fine, Thank you all for being here. All right,
• 55:32
Speaker 4: So Dave, I'll start with you. The Charleston Police Department
• 55:35
Speaker 4: teaming up with Astorgatto for this next two days. I mean,
• 55:39
Speaker 4: well it's tomorrow and Thursday.
• 55:41
Speaker 7: Right, correct, Yes, we're excited now that we are kicking
• 55:44
Speaker 7: off our fifth annual CPD Wonderland Toy Drive. It'll start
• 55:46
Speaker 7: Tomorrow and Thursday from eleven to seven and we'll be
• 55:52
Speaker 7: there accepting toys for the kids.
• 55:54
Speaker 4: How many years is the Charleston Police Department been doing that?
• 55:56
Speaker 4: This is our fifth year, fifth year year and an
• 55:59
Speaker 4: Astor got to Rob King is here and John Brown
• 56:02
Speaker 4: Roberts talk to you about this. What does Astrogatto get
• 56:05
  Speaker 4: out of this.
• 56:07
Speaker 8: It's really just something that our owner four years ago
• 56:10
Speaker 8: decided to get involved when Officer Cassie Johnson had been
• 56:15
Speaker 8: killed and he wanted to do something for the police
• 56:18
Speaker 8: department and the community. And each year we just like
• 56:22
Speaker 8: to see it grow bigger and bigger. We started out
• 56:24
Speaker 8: with around fifty kids and it was eight hundred last
• 56:27
Speaker 8: year and now we have a goal well over one thousand.
• 56:30
Speaker 4: And you guys just make it so easy to elect
• 56:32
Speaker 4: these toys because I mean, you know, the and and
• 56:35
Speaker 4: hats off in a big shout to the folks at
• 56:36
Speaker 4: the Many keep them shrine because they're wonderful to do
• 56:38
Speaker 4: all kinds of different things in the community. But they've
• 56:41
Speaker 4: got that wonderful facility there. And you don't even have
• 56:43
Speaker 4: to get out of your car, if I remember correct
• 56:44
Speaker 4: with them last year, just kind of pull up and
• 56:46
Speaker 4: drop them off, right.
• 56:46
Speaker 7: Correct, just pull up. Well, we'll have officers there to
• 56:50
Speaker 7: unload your packages for you. But we really would like
• 56:52
Speaker 7: to see the kids come also and enjoy the bouncy
• 56:54
Speaker 7: houses that we'll have over there. We'll have Sana over there.
• 56:58
Speaker 7: He arrives at noon tomorrow and he'll be coming at
• 57:00
Speaker 7: five thirty on Thursday, and we'll have the kids from
• 57:03
Speaker 7: the Discovery Center there tomorrow at noon to welcome Santa.
• 57:06
Speaker 4: Now what does a Discovery center explain that? For those
• 57:08
Speaker 4: who don't know, it's just a like a preschool downtown. Okay,
• 57:12
Speaker 4: all right, so they're all gonna be there as well. John,
• 57:14
Speaker 4: sub bring you in here for a moment. Uh, I
• 57:17
Speaker 4: know you love doing this sort of stuff, so that's
• 57:19
  Speaker 4: your big guy.
• 57:19
Speaker 6: Yes, it's uh, it's pretty cool, you know, to try
• 57:22
Speaker 6: to give back to the community and help help the
• 57:24
Speaker 6: Charleston Police out and just just just giving back to kids.
• 57:28
Speaker 6: That's unfortunate that that won't be having anything under the
• 57:32
  Speaker 6: Christmas tree.
• 57:34
Speaker 4: You guys are gonna take care of that.
• 57:35
Speaker 5: Yeah, we don't try to.
• 57:36
Speaker 6: Yeah, so what he would put out there that we
• 57:38
Speaker 6: need to try to fill the astrog out of Charleston
• 57:42
  Speaker 6: car holder.
• 57:43
Speaker 1: So how long is it?
• 57:44
  Speaker 5: Rob about?
• 57:45
  Speaker 18: Uh?
• 57:45
Speaker 5: How long is the car holder? It's about thirty two foot.
• 57:48
Speaker 5: So we got a lot of space to fill up
• 57:49
  Speaker 5: this year.
• 57:50
Speaker 4: So you know how many toys that is? I guess
• 57:52
Speaker 4: it all depends on what kind of toys they are.
• 57:53
Speaker 4: But yeah, how many?
• 57:54
  Speaker 5: How many?
• 57:55
Speaker 4: If you if you look at the average I mean,
• 57:56
Speaker 4: and it's so much smarter than I am to do this.
• 57:59
Speaker 4: If you looked at the average sized toy, all right,
• 58:02
Speaker 4: whatever that size may be, how many toys the Jeff had?
• 58:04
Speaker 4: Fill it up? Dave, you're you're a numbers guy.
• 58:06
Speaker 7: I would say, to fill that up. O. It's a lot,
• 58:09
  Speaker 7: but a lot, a lot. Yeah, it's a lot, maybe
• 58:13
Speaker 7: fifteen thousand or so toys. I mean it's yeah, it's
• 58:16
Speaker 7: a big yeah. Yeah, yes, it's a long Yeah.
• 58:19
Speaker 1: With the bikes and stuff. Might fill it up.
• 58:21
Speaker 4: Okay, And now, and how do you get these to
• 58:23
Speaker 4: the kids? What's that process?
• 58:24
Speaker 7: Well, there's a there's an application process that we started
• 58:26
Speaker 7: actually on Sunday, and we accept a two hundred and
• 58:29
Speaker 7: fifty kids on Sunday, we had to close it down.
• 58:31
Speaker 7: Depending on how many toys and donations we get on
• 58:34
Speaker 7: our upcoming toy drive, will open it back up and
• 58:37
Speaker 7: they'll apply and then next week what we'll do is
• 58:39
Speaker 7: we'll go sort them, bag them, and the people that
• 58:42
Speaker 7: applied will come and pick them up next week.
• 58:44
Speaker 4: Okay, again, we're talking about the Astorgado and Charleston Police
• 58:47
Speaker 4: Department Annual Toy driving next Wednesday and Thursday over at
• 58:50
Speaker 4: the Benny Keaton Shrine. Remind you at the day of

Speaker 4: talk about the involvement of the community and this we
• 59:22
Speaker 4: know what asst Orgado does and hats off to those
• 59:24
Speaker 4: folks that are wonderful to give back to several things
• 59:27
Speaker 4: in the community throughout the year. But talk about just
• 59:29
Speaker 4: the average folks day.
• 59:31
Speaker 7: Well, I mean, we really couldn't pull this off without
• 59:33
Speaker 7: the community. I mean it's all through donations. We're just
• 59:36
Speaker 7: the people that actually get to see the smiles on
• 59:38
Speaker 7: the kid's face when they come pick up the toys.
• 59:40
Speaker 7: But really, if it wasn't for the community coming to
• 59:42
Speaker 7: help support us, we couldn't pull this off at all.
• 59:44
Speaker 7: Like I said, we served a little over eight hundred
• 59:46
Speaker 7: children last year and we're hoping to serve at least
• 59:49
Speaker 7: a thousand this year hopefully.
• 59:51
Speaker 4: Now, you guys and anybody can jump in here. All
• 59:53
Speaker 4: three of you can have been doing this for some time.
• 59:55
Speaker 4: You said that the fifth year that you've done this.
• 59:58
Speaker 4: I don't want to go into details an individual obviously
• 1:00:01
Speaker 4: a child's name or anything, but give me, give me
• 1:00:03
Speaker 4: a good give me a great story any of you
• 1:00:06
Speaker 4: about about one of the kids that you saw that
• 1:00:08
Speaker 4: really their face lit up when they when they got
• 1:00:10
Speaker 4: their toy, or or or some stories you've heard maybe
• 1:00:14
  Speaker 4: through the process.
• 1:00:15
Speaker 5: Just sure, sure, I mean it's there's several kids.
• 1:00:18
Speaker 7: I mean when they come, even when the kids come
• 1:00:19
Speaker 7: with their parents that pick up their toys, of course
• 1:00:21
  Speaker 7: they're bagged up. They can't see what's innythy. I mean,
• 1:00:23
Speaker 7: we have hundreds of kids that come over there and
• 1:00:26
Speaker 7: they just to see there. They're they're they're smiling their faces,
• 1:00:29
Speaker 7: you know. I mean, that's that that does it for us,
• 1:00:30
Speaker 7: you know. I mean, so there's really not one story
• 1:00:32
Speaker 7: that stands out because I'm sure they're all special.
• 1:00:35
Speaker 4: Yeah, they all are. Again, we're talking about the Charleston
• 1:00:37
Speaker 4: Police Department and the ass Torgado Toy event which is
• 1:00:40
Speaker 4: going to be at the Benny Keatam Shrine tomorrow from
• 1:00:43
Speaker 4: eleven until and the next day two Thursday, from eleven
• 1:00:46
Speaker 4: until seven. And again when you come out for the event, guys,
• 1:00:49
Speaker 4: it's not just about the toys, like you said, Like
• 1:00:51
Speaker 4: like Payne said, you've got the you got bouncy houses,
• 1:00:54
Speaker 4: you got all kinds of cool stuff going on over there.
• 1:00:57
Speaker 5: Sanda's there, say, they'll be there, be lit up with
• 1:01:00
  Speaker 5: are lights.
• 1:01:01
Speaker 7: So you see the blue lights flashing in the in
• 1:01:02
Speaker 7: the corner over there, just drive up like I said,
• 1:01:05
Speaker 7: we have officers on hand to take your toys for you.
• 1:01:09
Speaker 7: We may even have a surprise gift for our first
• 1:01:11
Speaker 7: one hundred people that drop off toys.
• 1:01:13
Speaker 4: I think you did that last year, did first the
• 1:01:15
Speaker 4: surprise gift for the first one hundred people, right, Okay,
• 1:01:19
Speaker 4: we don't We're going to keep it.
• 1:01:20
Speaker 5: A surprise, right right.
• 1:01:22
Speaker 4: Dave, don't want to talk to you because you're kind
• 1:01:24
Speaker 4: of you know, you do so many things with the
• 1:01:25
Speaker 4: Charleston Police Department, but one of the things that you do,
• 1:01:27
Speaker 4: I don't know if it's on your business card or not,
• 1:01:29
  Speaker 4: is you're just you're you're kind of a community ambassador.
• 1:01:31
Speaker 4: You know, you're always out out there in the community
• 1:01:35
Speaker 4: and sometimes you know, in our in our communities, the
• 1:01:39
Speaker 4: people only see the police when it's a bad thing,
• 1:01:41
Speaker 4: you know, when there's a crime that's been committed or whatever.
• 1:01:44
Speaker 4: This is so important to have events for a police
• 1:01:47
Speaker 4: department in the city like Charleston, to have events like
• 1:01:50
Speaker 4: that when they see that you're that you're actually giving
• 1:01:52
Speaker 4: back and that you're just trying to help.
• 1:01:53
  Speaker 5: Oh, for sure.
• 1:01:54
Speaker 7: I mean that's we look forward to this really every year.
• 1:01:57
Speaker 7: All of our officers look forward to this. We actually
• 1:01:59
Speaker 7: have presents or gifts that we give our officers and
• 1:02:02
Speaker 7: they take them out to their beats and they actually
• 1:02:03
Speaker 7: go up to children and just random children and give
• 1:02:05
Speaker 7: them presents or knock on the door of a residence
• 1:02:09
Speaker 7: they made that they visited in the past, you know
• 1:02:11
Speaker 7: what I mean, it may not have been so good,
• 1:02:12
Speaker 7: so they have a gift to give them this time.
• 1:02:14
Speaker 10: So that's my favorite thing about this is when the
• 1:02:17
  Speaker 10: officers go out.
• 1:02:18
Speaker 8: If we have extra toys after the fact, they drive
• 1:02:21
Speaker 8: around in one of the police trucks and kids will
• 1:02:24
Speaker 8: be walking down the street and they'll pick out a toy,
• 1:02:26
Speaker 8: or they'll go through different communities and give out toys
• 1:02:29
Speaker 8: in the faces and the excitement is just you can't
• 1:02:32
  Speaker 8: get that.
• 1:02:33
Speaker 10: It doesn't get any better indeed.
• 1:02:35
Speaker 4: All right, So we got a lot of folks who
• 1:02:37
Speaker 4: listen to the show that maybe are in the business community,
• 1:02:39
Speaker 4: or maybe they're a different time civic organizations or whatever.
• 1:02:43
Speaker 4: Put out the final plea to them to help out
• 1:02:45
  Speaker 4: put this well.
• 1:02:46
Speaker 7: Basically, you know, we don't want any kid to go
• 1:02:48
Speaker 7: without a present on Christmas. So that's the really the
• 1:02:50
Speaker 7: biggest thing here. They can go to our Facebook, our
• 1:02:53
Speaker 7: Facebook page. We actually have a link there that they
• 1:02:55
Speaker 7: can donate online if they can't make it to the
• 1:02:58
Speaker 7: our toy drive. But really we're here for the kids.
• 1:03:01
Speaker 7: We want to see every kid have a toy for Christmas.
• 1:03:04
Speaker 4: That's the whole idea. And again the hours are from
• 1:03:06
Speaker 4: eleven of seven at the Many Keedom Shrine, one hundred
• 1:03:09
Speaker 4: Qarrier Street near the College Team of Convention Center. Your
• 1:03:11
Speaker 4: gabs is going to be down there, Santa Claus is
• 1:03:13
Speaker 4: going to be their bouncy houses and more. John, if
• 1:03:16
  Speaker 4: you got.
• 1:03:16

Speaker 4: you out of left field here, but I do want
• 1:08:12
Speaker 4: to give you an opportunity to do this because I
• 1:08:14
Speaker 4: saw something that you posted on social media about the
• 1:08:17
Speaker 4: death of former Supreme Court justice and Attorney General and
• 1:08:21
Speaker 4: all around political icon Daryl McGraw. You had shared a
• 1:08:26
Speaker 4: post on your social media about that. I hope I'm
• 1:08:28
Speaker 4: not getting through personal here, but what would you like
• 1:08:30
Speaker 4: to say about that?
• 1:08:31
  Speaker 5: Oh?
• 1:08:32
Speaker 4: Yeah, and I did.
• 1:08:33
  Speaker 14: I haven't met him before, but I didn't know him
• 1:08:35
Speaker 14: personal or anything. But my dad worked your dad Yeast
• 1:08:37
  Speaker 14: with him.
• 1:08:38
  Speaker 5: Yeah, he was.
• 1:08:38
Speaker 14: He worked with with Judge McGraw when he was a judge,
• 1:08:42
Speaker 14: and and so that was when I was a little baby.
• 1:08:44
Speaker 14: He was he was working there at the at the
• 1:08:46
Speaker 14: UH at the in the capitol. They were working for
• 1:08:48
Speaker 14: Judge McGraw and had a great experience there. And so
• 1:08:51
Speaker 14: you know, he's a he has an icon, was an icon,
• 1:08:53
Speaker 14: and and I think he had made a really big
• 1:08:55
  Speaker 14: positive impact.
• 1:08:56
  Speaker 5: On the state.
• 1:08:57
Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean he did, and he will certainly be missed.
• 1:08:59
Speaker 4: And I said, I said yes today when I had
• 1:09:01
Speaker 4: Mike Pushkin on the show, I said, I think when
• 1:09:03
Speaker 4: they write the book about West Virginia political figures over
• 1:09:07
Speaker 4: the years, you know you're gonna you're gonna talk about
• 1:09:09
Speaker 4: Robert Byrd, You're going to talk about the McGraw brothers,
• 1:09:12
Speaker 4: You're going to talk about Arch Moore and Jay Rockefeller
• 1:09:15
Speaker 4: and so many of these other these just these I guess,
• 1:09:19
Speaker 4: these these larger than life characters. I guess, yeah, I guess.
• 1:09:23
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 1:09:23
Speaker 5: It's definitely like a storybook sometimes.
• 1:09:25
Speaker 4: All Right, So you spent a lot of time you
• 1:09:27
Speaker 4: have on this show in the past talking about rate
• 1:09:30
Speaker 4: increases with the with the power company. Where do you
• 1:09:33
Speaker 4: want to go with this?
• 1:09:34
Speaker 14: Yeah, Well, so folks probably remember several months back there
• 1:09:38
Speaker 14: was a really big rate increase proposed by almost thirty
• 1:09:41
Speaker 14: dollars a month for most for most residential customers. So
• 1:09:46
Speaker 14: that got dismissed due to a technical issue. Essentially you
• 1:09:50
Speaker 14: had a son. I appreciate you doing that. That's been reintroduced, resubmitted.
• 1:09:55
  Speaker 14: So there's it's it's a little bit less, but it's
• 1:09:57
Speaker 14: still pretty significant. Twenty almost twenty four dollars a month
• 1:10:02
Speaker 14: rate increase from from the twenty nine then it was
• 1:10:05
Speaker 14: before and so this is this is called a base rate.
• 1:10:09
Speaker 14: So this is these cases last for some time. It
• 1:10:12
Speaker 14: will be in this next summer before this will be final.
• 1:10:15
Speaker 14: But you know, we're we're looking very closely at it.
• 1:10:19
Speaker 14: We've intervened in the case. They've also taught the companies
• 1:10:23
Speaker 14: have really talked up a proposal to kind of spread
• 1:10:26
Speaker 14: out the rate increase over a twenty year period and
• 1:10:30
Speaker 14: so that that may end up being some some cost
• 1:10:34
Speaker 14: savings for folks. We don't know exactly how much yet,
• 1:10:38
Speaker 14: because the way they're proposing they do that is they
• 1:10:41
Speaker 14: have a separate case for part of the rate increase.
• 1:10:44
Speaker 5: That would come up in you know, next month, a
• 1:10:46
  Speaker 5: couple of months.
• 1:10:47
Speaker 4: So what do you hear from I mean, I know
• 1:10:50
Speaker 4: you have a lot of different hats in your life,
• 1:10:52
Speaker 4: but I'm gonna ask you from a city councilman perspective
• 1:10:54
Speaker 4: on this one. What do you hear from your constituents
• 1:10:56
Speaker 4: out there about these I mean, nobody likes to pay it. Obviously,
• 1:10:59
Speaker 4: I completely understan that because you're, in addition to being
• 1:11:01
Speaker 4: a council when you're also a consumer of power. We
• 1:11:04
Speaker 4: all are. But what do you hear when talking to
• 1:11:06
  Speaker 4: people out there?
• 1:11:07
Speaker 14: Yeah, I mean people are frustrated the rates just keep
• 1:11:09
  Speaker 14: going up. It's it's it's very Uh, it's gotten a
• 1:11:13
Speaker 14: lot more expensive. They've more than doubled in the last
• 1:11:15
Speaker 14: fifteen years, uh here in in this area for Apple
• 1:11:19
Speaker 14: Watching power customers. So it's it's been a significant increase.
• 1:11:23
Speaker 5: For folks who are.
• 1:11:24
Speaker 14: Have limited incomes, living on fixed incomes, it's it's a
• 1:11:27
  Speaker 14: it's a challenge.
• 1:11:28
  Speaker 5: It's a real challenge.
• 1:11:29
Speaker 14: And of course, you know, uh, food's going up to
• 1:11:32
Speaker 14: and there's a lot of other things that have that
• 1:11:33
Speaker 14: have gone Uh. Costs have gone up, but I don't
• 1:11:36
Speaker 14: think much has gone up quite as much as our
• 1:11:38
  Speaker 14: electric rates.
• 1:11:40
Speaker 4: So let me play Devil's advocate here for a moment. Okay,
• 1:11:43
Speaker 4: it's the it's just the price. It's the cost of
• 1:11:45
Speaker 4: the price of doing business. You know, I mean, it's
• 1:11:48
  Speaker 4: costing them more.
• 1:11:49
  Speaker 1: Uh.
• 1:11:49
Speaker 4: And whether it's you know, the power company, whether it's water,
• 1:11:52
Speaker 4: whether it's gas, whatever utility we're talking about, it costs
• 1:11:54
Speaker 4: them more to do business, so they have to pass
• 1:11:57
Speaker 4: those expenses onto someone.
• 1:11:59
Speaker 14: Your your comment to that, Yeah, So so what we
• 1:12:02
Speaker 14: our system is as a regulated monopoly, right, so we
• 1:12:04
Speaker 14: in exchange for getting having a monopoly where they're the
• 1:12:07
Speaker 14: only option that we have. What what we what happens
• 1:12:11
Speaker 14: is that the Public Service Commission and people like my
• 1:12:15
Speaker 14: clients are lots of different people can can weigh in
• 1:12:18
Speaker 14: and have experts and look and to see whether these
• 1:12:21
Speaker 14: rates are really reasonable.
• 1:12:22
Speaker 5: And so that's that's the system that we have.
• 1:12:25
Speaker 14: And our issue is that, you know, our rates have
• 1:12:28
Speaker 14: gone up so much, we believe because the there's a
• 1:12:31
Speaker 14: lot of expensive power plants that we operate, that our
• 1:12:34
Speaker 14: utility operates, and instead of using the free market to
• 1:12:38
Speaker 14: buy their power, they're paying the sums to run those
• 1:12:40
Speaker 14: power plants. So and those the power plants are not
• 1:12:44
Speaker 14: running as cost competitive as you know other ones that
• 1:12:47
Speaker 14: could could be using the free market for and so
• 1:12:50
Speaker 14: that that's one of.
• 1:12:51
  Speaker 5: Our major issues.
• 1:12:53
Speaker 14: And you know, as I mentioned, this is a system
• 1:12:55
Speaker 14: where it's a regulator that we can push and pull
• 1:12:58
Speaker 14: and look at it and there's oversight by the Public
• 1:13:00
Speaker 14: Service Commission. One of the proposals in this in this
• 1:13:03
Speaker 14: rate increase is that they would just be they caught
• 1:13:06
Speaker 14: a race stabilization in surch Church where they would be
• 1:13:09
Speaker 14: able to just increase rates three percent a year with
• 1:13:12
Speaker 14: essentially no over saying at all. And so that and
• 1:13:16
Speaker 14: I think that you know there spin on it is
• 1:13:18
Speaker 14: that you know this is going to be something that
• 1:13:20
Speaker 14: will be you know, that way that we don't have
• 1:13:23
Speaker 14: the big bumps and there's a lot of rate increases
• 1:13:24
Speaker 14: every year, which is what happens. It's been two to
• 1:13:28
Speaker 14: three four different cases every year. The race don't seem
• 1:13:32
Speaker 14: to go down too much. And so that's another concern
• 1:13:35
Speaker 14: we have in this proposal.
• 1:13:37
Speaker 4: Talking to him with Charleston City Councilman Emmitt Pepper. The
• 1:13:39
Speaker 4: Dave Allen showing five eighty line brought to you a
• 1:13:41
Speaker 4: part by Pinnacle Consultants. Pinnacle offers eight offers a four
• 1:13:44

• 1:13:48
Speaker 4: reporting and management planning. Visit Pinnacle Corp dot net. Because
• 1:13:51
Speaker 4: what you don't know can hurt you. So before we
• 1:13:54
Speaker 4: move on to some other things, I got a few
• 1:13:55
Speaker 4: other things I want to talk to you about. Where
• 1:13:57
Speaker 4: do we go from here on this? And you kind
• 1:13:58
Speaker 4: of mentioned at the beginning of the interview, what's what's
• 1:14:00
Speaker 4: the next step in this counseling.
• 1:14:02
Speaker 14: Yeah, yeah, so there's gonna be so we have a
• 1:14:04
Speaker 14: I'm part of a coalition called West Virginia's for Energy Freedom,
• 1:14:06
Speaker 14: So people go to Energy Freedom wv't out or they
• 1:14:08
Speaker 14: can engage in that. We're going to probably we know
• 1:14:11
Speaker 14: we're still kind of reading through it, but but I
• 1:14:13
Speaker 14: think we're pretty close to the point where we're going
• 1:14:15
Speaker 14: to have an ability for people to weigh in and
• 1:14:18
Speaker 14: make their voice heard at the Public Service Commission. That
• 1:14:21
Speaker 14: the last one little issue, that big issue that we're
• 1:14:23
Speaker 14: concerned with, is there. There's also a proposal to make
• 1:14:26
Speaker 14: it much harder to go a solar in this So
• 1:14:28
Speaker 14: if you want to do something about your bills by
• 1:14:30
Speaker 14: going solar, that becomes harder too.
• 1:14:33
Speaker 5: We can we'll have more information about that online.
• 1:14:35
Speaker 4: All right, So I want to move on to a
• 1:14:37
Speaker 4: couple other things. Number One, I know you're heavily involved
• 1:14:40
Speaker 4: in something with the first Presbyterian Church here in Charleston,
• 1:14:43
Speaker 4: and they did a Hope Village. Talk about that a
• 1:14:45
Speaker 4: little bit because it's is it over? It is over,
• 1:14:47
Speaker 4: but talk about it anyway.
• 1:14:49
Speaker 14: Yeah, yeah, So first, I mean I'm not I'm not
• 1:14:51
Speaker 14: really that involved, but but I do go there and
• 1:14:55
Speaker 14: and it's a really cool thing. Peop folks can check
• 1:14:57
Speaker 14: should check it out next year. It's not fundraiser for
• 1:15:00
Speaker 14: the church, but what it is is it's a it's
• 1:15:02
Speaker 14: a way for they want to part of the mission
• 1:15:05
Speaker 14: of the church is to help support folks around the
• 1:15:07
Speaker 14: world who are struggling. And so they they purchased food
• 1:15:12
Speaker 14: or different gift items and there's some food and coffee.
• 1:15:15
Speaker 14: Actually you can go all year around and get fair
• 1:15:17
Speaker 14: trade coffee, fair trade.
• 1:15:19
Speaker 5: Olive oil and stuff like that.
• 1:15:21
Speaker 14: And so this is a way if they kind of
• 1:15:23
Speaker 14: broaden that and have every you know, I think it
• 1:15:26
Speaker 14: was three or four weekends out of the year leading
• 1:15:29
Speaker 14: up to Thanksgiving where you know, people can come and
• 1:15:32
Speaker 14: buy stuff. And it supports small farmers, small businesses from
• 1:15:37
Speaker 14: around the world and places that are struggling, a lot
• 1:15:39
Speaker 14: of war torn areas and things like that. And actually
• 1:15:42
Speaker 14: some of the places that they use were actually were
• 1:15:46
Speaker 14: they provide services for folks overseas, but they're based on
• 1:15:49
Speaker 14: areas that got hit really heard by Hurricane Helene, so
• 1:15:51
Speaker 14: it was actually helping those entities as well. So anyway,
• 1:15:54
Speaker 14: it was a really cool thing. Folks should check that out.
• 1:15:57
Speaker 20: And we're talking about it after the fact and that's
• 1:15:59
Speaker 20: but yeah, because you had reached out to me about it,
• 1:16:01
Speaker 20: and I just we just we couldn't get our schedule
• 1:16:04
Speaker 20: election time, and I get that to get you on,
• 1:16:06
Speaker 20: but I wanted to give.
• 1:16:07
Speaker 4: An opportunity to talk about it as we move into
• 1:16:09
Speaker 4: next year. Countselan, I spent a little time last week
• 1:16:13
Speaker 4: talking about the proposed panhandling ordinance here in Charleston. Now
• 1:16:17
Speaker 4: I understand it has gone to committee. Now I had
• 1:16:19
Speaker 4: Countsman Chad Robinson on the show to talk about it
• 1:16:21
Speaker 4: last week. Mayor Goodwin was also on the show last
• 1:16:23
Speaker 4: week talking about it. Do you care to I mean,
• 1:16:26
  Speaker 4: where are you.
• 1:16:27
  Speaker 18: On all this?
• 1:16:28
Speaker 5: Well, A couple of things.
• 1:16:29
Speaker 14: I mean, so one, I don't think this had happened
• 1:16:31
Speaker 14: when you had Taman Robinson on last week or the mayor.
• 1:16:37
Speaker 14: There's a lawsuit was filed in against mon County who
• 1:16:41
Speaker 14: had a similar ordinances. I think both of them talked
• 1:16:43
Speaker 14: about last week, and so you know, from my perspective,
• 1:16:49
Speaker 14: you know, just I'm no expert on First Amendment law
• 1:16:53
Speaker 14: or anything, but my reader of it is there's some
• 1:16:56
Speaker 14: First Amendment challenges there that might be, you know, it
• 1:16:59
Speaker 14: is someone's right to be able to ask somebody for money.
• 1:17:03
Speaker 14: But so I think what we'll you know, my guess
• 1:17:06
Speaker 14: is that or my strong inclination would be to just
• 1:17:09
Speaker 14: wait and see how the lawsuit plays out. But you know,
• 1:17:13
Speaker 14: I know that the chairman and the mayor are both
• 1:17:16
Speaker 14: very you know, committed to taking the time thinking it through.
• 1:17:19
Speaker 14: Let's let's think about all that different options. How do
• 1:17:22
Speaker 14: we do this in the way that's you know, protective
• 1:17:24
Speaker 14: of people's rights but also protective of everybody else's safety.
• 1:17:28
Speaker 4: And I mentioned this on the show before, and it's
• 1:17:30
Speaker 4: a very good point on your behalf there that when
• 1:17:33
Speaker 4: this has gone not only in West Virginia but across
• 1:17:35
Speaker 4: the country. You know, the frequently these laws, although maybe
• 1:17:39
Speaker 4: they're well intentioned, are are stricken down on First Amendment issues. However,
• 1:17:43
Speaker 4: it looks like this time around, what they're doing is
• 1:17:45
Speaker 4: they're trying to take it from a safety perspective and
• 1:17:49
Speaker 4: that they're trying to say, Okay, well, it's not about
• 1:17:51
Speaker 4: the person stopping you on the street and asking you
• 1:17:54
Speaker 4: for for change or whatever. It's about people standing in
• 1:17:58
Speaker 4: right of ways. It's about people standing next to highways
• 1:18:01
Speaker 4: and things of that nature. And it wouldn't only involved
• 1:18:03
Speaker 4: what you what you think of of just somebody asking
• 1:18:05
Speaker 4: you for spare change. This could involve political figures standing
• 1:18:09
Speaker 4: and holding signs up. You're a political figure, so you
• 1:18:13
Speaker 4: may not be able to stand up there.
• 1:18:14
Speaker 5: I've been known to stand at the front of the
• 1:18:16
Speaker 5: south side of Bridgehich.
• 1:18:17
Speaker 4: I think every you know every and it could also
• 1:18:20
Speaker 4: have It could also get into those holding up a
• 1:18:24
Speaker 4: sign that says you know car washed, that you know
• 1:18:27
Speaker 4: the auto parts store straight ahead or or whatever. I mean,
• 1:18:29
Speaker 4: there's a lot of different things that could possibly play.
• 1:18:34
Speaker 14: Everybody's you know, the people who are proposing it are
• 1:18:36
Speaker 14: saying it is about panhandling, so yeah, I mean, it'll
• 1:18:39
Speaker 14: be interesting to see, you know, smarter people than myself,
• 1:18:42
Speaker 14: judge clear up in the Northern District will be looking
• 1:18:45
Speaker 14: at this and similar law up there, and you know,
• 1:18:47
Speaker 14: I think it would be problematic or expensive for us
• 1:18:51
Speaker 14: and not good use of taxpayer money to go into
• 1:18:54
Speaker 14: this while there's an opending lossuit.
• 1:18:56
Speaker 4: All right, what else is on your play? What else
• 1:18:57
Speaker 4: you're looking at as we close out the year? The
• 1:18:59
Speaker 4: time is ords? What else as a city counciloran or
• 1:19:02
Speaker 4: anything else you want to talk about?
• 1:19:03
Speaker 5: Aim it? Yeah, yeah, I mean I think that.
• 1:19:06
  Speaker 2: Well.
• 1:19:06
Speaker 14: One thing that's that's going on in my life is
• 1:19:08
Speaker 14: that there's been a lot of movement. I've been able
• 1:19:11
Speaker 14: to help a lot of people in my private practice
• 1:19:14
Speaker 14: with student loan debt. There I've already gotten rid of
• 1:19:17
Speaker 14: one hundred and fifty thousand dollars worth of people's student
• 1:19:19
  Speaker 14: loan debt through a bankruptcy process. And it's a it's
• 1:19:22
Speaker 14: a it's an area of law of people think that
• 1:19:23
Speaker 14: you can't bankrupt student loans, but it's it's been helping
• 1:19:26
Speaker 14: out a lot of people.
• 1:19:26
  Speaker 5: And people are.
• 1:19:27
Speaker 14: Struggling with student loans and it's gotten i mean from
• 1:19:29
Speaker 14: when you and I were in college, it's gotten to
• 1:19:31
Speaker 14: be a lot worse.
• 1:19:32
  Speaker 4: It's it's you can't look I'm one of those people.
• 1:19:34
Speaker 4: I'm a kid of the I went to college in
• 1:19:37
Speaker 4: the started in the late eighties and through the early nineties,
• 1:19:40
Speaker 4: and I can easily say, you know, I can I
• 1:19:42
Speaker 4: can be that guy, which I frequently am on the
• 1:19:44
Speaker 4: show counsel and you know, somebody that looks back goes
• 1:19:46
Speaker 4: well in my day. To be fair, it's not the
• 1:19:49
Speaker 4: same world. It's not the same and I need to
• 1:19:52
Speaker 4: do a better job of that as saying, you know,
• 1:19:54
Speaker 4: when I went to college in nineteen eighty eight, it's
• 1:19:56
Speaker 4: not the same that the people that are looking at
• 1:19:59
Speaker 4: these student loans debts from twenty fourteen twenty fifteen went through.
• 1:20:03
  Speaker 5: It's it's a.
• 1:20:03
Speaker 4: Totally different what's what's the percentage that it's that the
• 1:20:06
  Speaker 4: rates of race.
• 1:20:07
Speaker 14: Since then in many cases, I don't know this percentage
• 1:20:10
Speaker 14: of the rates off the top of my head, but
• 1:20:11
Speaker 14: I know that, you know, the student un debt has
• 1:20:13
Speaker 14: ballooned in the past, you know, decade or two. And
• 1:20:16
Speaker 14: so you know, I've had people come in, who's seventy
• 1:20:19
Speaker 14: year old guy, Actually he was going to school in
• 1:20:21
Speaker 14: the late nineties and early two thousands, and he still
• 1:20:25
Speaker 14: has student on debt from a significant amount of it
• 1:20:28
Speaker 14: from from way back then.
• 1:20:29
Speaker 5: And and so these are people who you know, when
• 1:20:32
  Speaker 5: does it end?
• 1:20:33
  Speaker 9: You know?
• 1:20:33
Speaker 5: And so we're able to help people with that which
• 1:20:35
  Speaker 5: is great.
• 1:20:36
Speaker 4: All right, Well, keep doing good things in city council.
• 1:20:39
Speaker 4: I know that, you know, Charleston has such a large
• 1:20:41
Speaker 4: city council, and you've got a variety of different voices,
• 1:20:44
Speaker 4: and you stand up for different areas and some are
• 1:20:47
Speaker 4: at large, and you know you're working with the mayor
• 1:20:49
Speaker 4: and so on and so forth. But I think that
• 1:20:50
Speaker 4: the overall, I think there's a lot of exciting things
• 1:20:53
Speaker 4: going on in Charleston, and I know as we head
• 1:20:54
Speaker 4: into twenty twenty five, you're going to continue to see
• 1:20:57
Speaker 4: those as well. Council with Emmitt Pepper is always a

• 1:24:14
Speaker 4: Mars show, State Senator Glen Jefferies is going to join us.
• 1:24:16
Speaker 4: There's been a lot of talk about economic development here
• 1:24:19
Speaker 4: as of late in West Virginia and some things that
• 1:24:21
Speaker 4: were supposed to happen with the special session. Well there
• 1:24:24
Speaker 4: ended up not being a special session. It was just interims.
• 1:24:27
Speaker 4: I don't want to see just interims because interims are
• 1:24:29
Speaker 4: continuing today. But I'm going to talk to Cintra Glen
• 1:24:32
Speaker 4: Jeffries about some things along that along that line of
• 1:24:36
Speaker 4: thinking when it comes to economic development, things of that nature.
• 1:24:39
Speaker 4: He'll be on the show tomorrow. Plus Jay Silverman's going
• 1:24:41
Speaker 4: to be here now. Like a lot of us, Jay
• 1:24:43
Speaker 4: wears a lot of hats. He's of course with the
• 1:24:45
Speaker 4: Charleston Dirty Birds as they continue with the Selango Law
• 1:24:48
Speaker 4: Light the Night Over at Gomart Ballpark. He's also got
• 1:24:51
Speaker 4: this YouTube channel, Have Fun. Where as best I've been
• 1:24:53
Speaker 4: able to ascertain, he drives all over West Virginia and
• 1:24:56
Speaker 4: eats things pretty cool gig if you can get it.
• 1:24:58
Speaker 4: But Jay is also a part of a worldwide organization
• 1:25:01
Speaker 4: that does a lot of good for people, and that
• 1:25:04
Speaker 4: is the Moose Organization. We're going to talk to Jay
• 1:25:06
Speaker 4: about that coming up on the show tomorrow. Plus Conaw
• 1:25:09
Speaker 4: County Comission Benceulango will be stopping by as well this
• 1:25:13
Speaker 4: Friday and Saturday. The eyes of the sports world in
• 1:25:16
Speaker 4: West Virginia and maybe maybe we could take the focus
• 1:25:19
Speaker 4: off the change in the football coaches in both Morgantown
• 1:25:21
Speaker 4: and Huntington. We can focus on the field and also
• 1:25:23
Speaker 4: not in the courtroom to talk about Well, you used
• 1:25:25
Speaker 4: to be known as the Super six. Now it's this
• 1:25:27
Speaker 4: is the high school football state title games. For years
• 1:25:30
Speaker 4: in Wheelings starting Friday continuing into Saturday. Championships are back
• 1:25:34
Speaker 4: in Charleston. Tim Brady's with the Charleston Convention of Visitors Bureau,
• 1:25:37
Speaker 4: and he joined us now to talk about it. Tim,
• 1:25:38
Speaker 4: good morning, Welcome to the show.
• 1:25:39
Speaker 5: Thanks for having me. Dave, always a pleasure to be here, brother.
• 1:25:42
Speaker 4: And so after a week or so delay in the courts,
• 1:25:46
Speaker 4: we finally got it worked out. We're ready to play football.
• 1:25:48
Speaker 4: First game Friday at noon. I've seen and I've heard
• 1:25:52
Speaker 4: some of your other interviews with Fred and different people
• 1:25:54
Speaker 4: about this, but talk about that delay process, what that
• 1:25:56
Speaker 4: was like, through no fault of your own, obviously, you
• 1:25:58
Speaker 4: know when you had that in the court system and
• 1:26:02
Speaker 4: you're like, Okay, what are we going to do here?
• 1:26:03
Speaker 4: Luckily we got it worked out, didn't cast too big.
• 1:26:05
Speaker 4: We're probably but talk about that from the city's perspective.
• 1:26:09
Speaker 4: Let's let's just kind of get into that.
• 1:26:11
Speaker 5: Sure. So first and foremost, I'm glad you said there's
• 1:26:14
Speaker 5: certainly nothing, nothing that had nothing to do with it.
• 1:26:17
Speaker 5: It would have had still would have been delayed a week.
• 1:26:21
  Speaker 1: Now.
• 1:26:21
Speaker 5: Here's what I will say. The one week delay in
• 1:26:25
Speaker 5: hosting the West Virginia State High School Football Championships presented
• 1:26:29
Speaker 5: by Toyota. That's the official Name's the official name. Had
• 1:26:31
Speaker 5: to work that in, just like a good NASCAR driver.
• 1:26:33
Speaker 5: I had to get my plugs in, you know. To
• 1:26:37
Speaker 5: be honest, David, it really didn't impact us that much.
• 1:26:41
Speaker 5: It the field was still available, you know. The hotels.
• 1:26:46
Speaker 5: The one issue that we bumped into, and we really
• 1:26:49
Speaker 5: got this put to bed yesterday was hotel rooms because
• 1:26:52
Speaker 5: now the state high School Football Championships presented by Toyota
• 1:26:56
Speaker 5: are being held at the same time as the West
• 1:26:59
Speaker 5: Virginia's Date High School Cheer Championships taking place this Saturday
• 1:27:04
Speaker 5: at the Charleston Coliseum. So you had cheer rooms that
• 1:27:07
Speaker 5: were booked months ago, and we had a full plan
• 1:27:10
Speaker 5: laid out for where teams that qualified for football housing
• 1:27:13
Speaker 5: would be placed. Had it happened last weekend. We had
• 1:27:17
Speaker 5: to kind of mix and match and move some puzzle
• 1:27:20
Speaker 5: pieces around throughout the day yesterday to make sure that
• 1:27:22
Speaker 5: all the teams that needed rooms had the rooms that
• 1:27:24
Speaker 5: they needed. So once we got that worked out, it
• 1:27:27
Speaker 5: was really just taking the plans from the initial week
• 1:27:30
Speaker 5: and translating everything to the following week. So for us
• 1:27:33
Speaker 5: logistically aside from hotel rooms. It wasn't that big of
• 1:27:36
  Speaker 5: a deal.
• 1:27:37
Speaker 4: Talk about the process of getting the championships here because
• 1:27:41
Speaker 4: then Wheeling for so many years. Yep, and they're back
• 1:27:46
Speaker 4: in Charleston, talk about how that whole process.
• 1:27:49
Speaker 5: So, yeah, they had been in Wheeling for thirty years.
• 1:27:53
Speaker 5: And I'm going to say from jump and I hope
• 1:27:57
Speaker 5: that folks from Wheeling. I've said this many times and
• 1:28:01
Speaker 5: I want to make sure that I stress it. Wheeling
• 1:28:04
Speaker 5: did a fantastic job with this with this event in
• 1:28:08
Speaker 5: a lot of ways, they really created the template and
• 1:28:10
Speaker 5: set the bar for what the expectation was from a
• 1:28:14
Speaker 5: host committee for this event. Whealing did an outstanding job
• 1:28:17
Speaker 5: with it. However, the wvs SAC decided to put the
• 1:28:23
Speaker 5: championships out to bid, and there were I believe four
• 1:28:27
Speaker 5: bid presentations from host cities, actually four bids, five cities.
• 1:28:33
Speaker 5: Charleston bid and one Wheeling bid on the event. Bluefield
• 1:28:38
Speaker 5: also bid on the event, and then there was a
• 1:28:40
Speaker 5: combined bid from Morgantown and Huntington that would have split
• 1:28:46
Speaker 5: the game every other year between WVU and Marshall. So
• 1:28:50
Speaker 5: there were four bids and we put together what we
• 1:28:53
Speaker 5: thought was a competitive bid and we went into the
• 1:28:55
Speaker 5: bid process and won it, so everyone had the opportunity
• 1:28:59
Speaker 5: to present. There were site visits by the wvs SEC
• 1:29:03
Speaker 5: staff and some of their board members to all of
• 1:29:04
Speaker 5: the facilities, and through the process we walked away having
• 1:29:10
Speaker 5: won the event for the next three years, with the
• 1:29:12
Speaker 5: mutual option for the fourth.
• 1:29:14
Speaker 4: So when people come out to these and it's kind
• 1:29:16
Speaker 4: of an interesting if you look at the teams that
• 1:29:18
Speaker 4: are in this you have some teams from our listening area,
• 1:29:23
Speaker 4: the Charles Jerry of course, you got Herbert Hoover, and
• 1:29:26
Speaker 4: you know we've got Rohan County. We talked about them
• 1:29:28
Speaker 4: during the break. But then you've got some schools coming
• 1:29:30
Speaker 4: down that are not so close to here, your stomping
• 1:29:33
Speaker 4: grounds up in Bridgeport, and the two schools that I
• 1:29:37
Speaker 4: think are like fifteen miles apart over in the Eastern Panhandle,
• 1:29:40
Speaker 4: but they're going to pack up buses and come down
• 1:29:42
Speaker 4: here to play the game. And that happened in the
• 1:29:44
Speaker 4: past as well. Yeah, I just think because I used
• 1:29:46
Speaker 4: to and Fred jokes with me. Fred Persinger jokes with
• 1:29:48
Speaker 4: me all the time.
• 1:29:49
Speaker 5: I used to red hat the Super six when it
• 1:29:52
Speaker 5: was in Wheeling for years worked on the sidelines and
• 1:29:55
Speaker 5: was the radio and TV timeout coordinator working with the referees.
• 1:29:59
Speaker 5: And I distinctly remember Triple A championship games between Capitol
• 1:30:05
Speaker 5: in South Charlestown where they would load the buses and
• 1:30:07
Speaker 5: go to Wheeling. So the goal of the host committee
• 1:30:09
Speaker 5: and to that point is to make it like a
• 1:30:12
Speaker 5: bowl game, so even if you are local, it is
• 1:30:14
Speaker 5: still special. And I'll talk more about that in a minute,
• 1:30:17
Speaker 5: but when you talk about the schools that are coming in,
• 1:30:19
Speaker 5: you know, it's really exciting to get a team like
• 1:30:21
Speaker 5: Cameron that's never played in the state championship before. So
• 1:30:24
Speaker 5: Cameron's coming, They're excited. They're coming down for two days.
• 1:30:27
Speaker 5: Cameron's a cool story because they play on Friday at noon.
• 1:30:31
Speaker 5: Their cheerleaders compete on Saturday at the coliseum in the
• 1:30:35
Speaker 5: State Cheer Championship. So their football team is staying an
• 1:30:38
Speaker 5: extra night on their own dimes so that their football
• 1:30:41
Speaker 5: players can be at the coliseum on Saturday to cheer
• 1:30:44
Speaker 5: on their their classmates and their and their their cheerleaders.
• 1:30:48
Speaker 5: So you know that's cool. So you've got Cameron and Muhamma,
• 1:30:51
Speaker 5: You've got Double A. Rohan County has never been there.
• 1:30:53
Speaker 5: Spencer High School way back in the day had but
• 1:30:56
Speaker 5: Rohan County High School never been there. Taking on a
• 1:30:59
Speaker 5: very good, very good, very motivated Frankfurt team Triple A,
• 1:31:02
Speaker 5: I think is to me the most intriguing matchup. And
• 1:31:04
Speaker 5: I'm trying to keep those, by the way, Dave, trying
• 1:31:06
Speaker 5: to keep those Bridgeport ties on the d L this. Okay,
• 1:31:09
Speaker 5: you know, I don't want the Hoover folks knowing that
• 1:31:12
Speaker 5: I have those old Bridgeport times. Tim Brady is from
• 1:31:14
Speaker 5: Bridgeport to Bridgeport, Texas Bridgeport text Bridgeport, Connecticut. Yeah, I did.
• 1:31:19
Speaker 5: I did Bridgeport High School football on the radio for
• 1:31:22
  Speaker 5: over a decade before I moved to Charleston. That's a
• 1:31:25
Speaker 5: very good football team. This Hoover team is really good too.
• 1:31:27
Speaker 5: That's gonna be a great matchup.
• 1:31:28
  Speaker 4: Yeah, and Hoover.
• 1:31:30
Speaker 5: I think the best crowd of the weekend, my guess
• 1:31:33
Speaker 5: is gonna be on Saturday at noon when Hoover plays Bridgeport,
• 1:31:36
Speaker 5: because I think everybody from the Elk River is going
• 1:31:39
Speaker 5: to be in Charlestown at Ladleyfield. And then we've got
• 1:31:42
Speaker 5: that other matchup, the one that you talked about. Two
• 1:31:43
Speaker 5: schools fifteen miles apart, Spring Millsen and Martinsburg and they
• 1:31:47
Speaker 5: played earlier in the year. It's a really good game.
• 1:31:49
Speaker 5: So we're expecting for really good games. But when the
• 1:31:51
Speaker 5: teams show up, you know, again making it more like
• 1:31:54
Speaker 5: a bowl game. The teams that want team meals, we're
• 1:31:58
Speaker 5: providing team meals. Some of the hotels are hosting team meals.
• 1:32:02
Speaker 5: Buffalo Wild Wings is hosting a team meal. The Eagles
• 1:32:05
Speaker 5: Nest at Little Creek Country Club is hosting a team
• 1:32:07
Speaker 5: meal for us. So the teams travel, Herbert Hoover is
• 1:32:11
Speaker 5: going to take their whole team to uh Solango Law
• 1:32:15
Speaker 5: light the night at Gomart Ballpark on Thursday evening and
• 1:32:19
Speaker 5: enjoy that as a team. And then when the teams
• 1:32:21
Speaker 5: show up, they drop their equipment off before the before
• 1:32:25
Speaker 5: the game day, all of their uniforms, their helmets will
• 1:32:28
Speaker 5: be shined, their shoes will be shined, their lockers will
• 1:32:30
Speaker 5: be hung. We're we're making it like a true bowl
• 1:32:33
Speaker 5: game environment. When the teams walk into their locker room,
• 1:32:35
  Speaker 5: there's a there's a sense of arrival. It's a championship
• 1:32:38
Speaker 5: atmosphere for the teams. So even though those two schools
• 1:32:40
Speaker 5: from the Eastern Panhandle are very familiar with each other
• 1:32:43
Speaker 5: and close together. They show up here and it's really it's.
• 1:32:46
Speaker 4: A bowl game atmosphere for them, totally different environment. The

Speaker 4: Visit Bridge Valley dot eedu slash apprenticeships Today. Let's talk
• 1:33:07
Speaker 4: some me logistics. Somebody brought up to me something the
• 1:33:10
Speaker 4: other day about parking, because you know we are at
• 1:33:13
Speaker 4: lately and the lot of state employees this I'm talking
• 1:33:16
Speaker 4: about Friday now, Friday at noon, a lot of state employees,
• 1:33:19
Speaker 4: Uh use that facility.
• 1:33:21
  Speaker 18: What are you?
• 1:33:22
Speaker 5: What are we looking at here? As far as parking
• 1:33:23
Speaker 5: ghost team, So Friday at noon is really our one
• 1:33:26
Speaker 5: parking challenge. You know, anybody from the state that wants
• 1:33:30
Speaker 5: to take the day off, I would encourage them. But no,
• 1:33:33
Speaker 5: there is there there's still there's still Laidley Field parking. Uh,
• 1:33:38
Speaker 5: there is on street parking in the neighborhoods around UH. Lately,
• 1:33:41
Speaker 5: there's also UH parking on Washington Street and down toward
• 1:33:48
Speaker 5: the east end you can park off of Piedmont there.
• 1:33:53
Speaker 5: There's parking available. Friday at noon is going to be
• 1:33:57
Speaker 5: a challenge. We do anticipate a big crowd from Muhammad,
• 1:34:00
Speaker 5: We do anticipate a big crowd from from Cameron, but
• 1:34:07
Speaker 5: we feel like we've got the parking worked out. There
• 1:34:09
Speaker 5: will be some signers. They'll be UH Charleston Police officer
• 1:34:12
Speaker 5: and Kenall County Sheriff's officer presence in the neighborhood. We
• 1:34:17
Speaker 5: do feel like we've got the parking worked out and
• 1:34:19
Speaker 5: enough directional signage and traffic direction to get people where
• 1:34:23
Speaker 5: they need to be, all.
• 1:34:24
Speaker 4: Right and UH And if you're listening to us in
• 1:34:26
Speaker 4: any of those areas over in you know where Wahama
• 1:34:29
Speaker 4: High School is in Mason County or whatever, carpool It
• 1:34:31
Speaker 4: would help us out a whole.
• 1:34:32
Speaker 5: Lot if you could. Carpooling would would certainly help.
• 1:34:35
Speaker 4: Are they doing team buses?
• 1:34:36
Speaker 5: I mean, and the team buses we've got parking office.
• 1:34:42
Speaker 5: I'm for fans is what I'm at for the fans.
• 1:34:44
Speaker 5: Oh sure, but if if they come in a bus.
• 1:34:46
Speaker 5: We've got bus parking off of Hansford Street and then
• 1:34:48
Speaker 5: we'll get them in to the stadium from that direction.
• 1:34:53
Speaker 4: Okay, let's before we let you go, let's talk about
• 1:34:55
Speaker 4: economic impacts of this. I mean, these people are going
• 1:34:58
Speaker 4: to come in and you know a lot of them,
• 1:34:59
Speaker 4: you know, the people from Hoover and so on, and
• 1:35:01
Speaker 4: the driveable, the one that are far from here. They're
• 1:35:04
Speaker 4: probably going to go to the game and maybe go
• 1:35:05
Speaker 4: back home. But we do hope that they come to
• 1:35:08
Speaker 4: downtown Charleston. You mentioned the Selango law light to night. Uh,
• 1:35:11
Speaker 4: we do hope that they'll go downtown. And he talking
• 1:35:14
Speaker 4: about fans now more players. Obviously some are going to
• 1:35:17
Speaker 4: be staying in hotels. Let's talk about economic impact here.
• 1:35:20
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 1:35:21
Speaker 5: I'll be really interested following the event to run the
• 1:35:24
Speaker 5: numbers and see what the real economic impact of this
• 1:35:26
  Speaker 5: event is.
• 1:35:27
  Speaker 17: You know.
• 1:35:28
Speaker 5: The the one nice thing about having those teams from
• 1:35:30
Speaker 5: the Eastern Panhandle, and you know, we've got we've got
• 1:35:33
Speaker 5: four teams that qualified for housing under the wvs SEC's formula,
• 1:35:37
Speaker 5: and that's Martinsburg, spring Mill, Frankfort and Cameron and they're
• 1:35:40
Speaker 5: all all of the teams are staying two nights. We
• 1:35:43
Speaker 5: anticipate that their fans are going to come and they're
• 1:35:46
Speaker 5: going to at least spend one night in Charleston. I
• 1:35:49
Speaker 5: do know that between the Football Championships presented by Toyota
• 1:35:53
Speaker 5: and the cheer Championships, that our hotels are full. I
• 1:35:57
Speaker 5: mean I spent an hour on the phone yesterday trying
• 1:36:00
Speaker 5: to find hotel rooms for the Martinsburg football team because
• 1:36:04
Speaker 5: everything was taken up with cheerleading and other things happening
• 1:36:08
Speaker 5: in the city. We got it worked out, but hotels
• 1:36:11
Speaker 5: are full this weekend. It's going to be a great
• 1:36:13
Speaker 5: weekend in the city of Charlestown because you know you
• 1:36:16
Speaker 5: mentioned Gomart ballparking light the night. We've got Holly Jolly
• 1:36:19
Speaker 5: Brawley going on. There's holiday activities happening at Capital Market
• 1:36:24
Speaker 5: Friday and Saturday, and we've got these two massive sporting competitions,
• 1:36:30
Speaker 5: high school sporting competitions going on. It's going to be
• 1:36:32
Speaker 5: a great weekend in the city of Charleston. All right, Tim,
• 1:36:36
Speaker 5: hats off to you and the city and everything that
• 1:36:38
Speaker 5: you did in getting this here.
• 1:36:39
Speaker 4: Now it's go time.
• 1:36:41
Speaker 5: I do want to say, just allow me one more thing, certainly,
• 1:36:44
Speaker 5: couldn't do this without the partnership and the support of
• 1:36:47
Speaker 5: the City of Charleston.
• 1:36:48
  Speaker 1: May MARRYM.
• 1:36:48
Speaker 5: Goodwin and her staff also want to say, couldn't be
• 1:36:51
Speaker 5: done without the Kanall County Board of Education. They actually
• 1:36:54
Speaker 5: own Lateley Field. The upgrades that have been done there,
• 1:36:58
Speaker 5: press box complete, letely renovated and expanded, locker rooms completely renovated,
• 1:37:05
Speaker 5: soup to nuts. They've done a massive amount of work there,
• 1:37:08
Speaker 5: including installing a new JumboTron. Those help us, but the
• 1:37:13
Speaker 5: football Championships coming here with the impetus to get these
• 1:37:16
Speaker 5: improvements made. But they will benefit the community for many
• 1:37:19
Speaker 5: many years to come and the kids that grow up
• 1:37:21
Speaker 5: here and play on that field. So really have to
• 1:37:24
Speaker 5: say thank you to the Canall County Board of Education.
• 1:37:27
Speaker 5: I've worked closely with doctor Paula Potter, but I know
• 1:37:30
Speaker 5: that the entire board staff has been supportive of this,
• 1:37:34
Speaker 5: so really have to thank them for their support and
• 1:37:37
Speaker 5: help in this effort.
• 1:37:38
Speaker 4: Tim good Luck. I was joking with Tim as we
• 1:37:40
Speaker 4: were walking down to steps this morning. I said, Hey,

• 1:37:44

• 1:37:45
Speaker 4: else going on right.
• 1:37:46
Speaker 5: Tons of free time this weekend. They just hit me up.

• 1:40:53
Speaker 4: our legislature unanimously passed not just one, but two bills
• 1:40:57
Speaker 4: directing and funding the Capitol Building Commission and Commission on
• 1:41:00
Speaker 4: the Arts to design and to build a monument for
• 1:41:02
Speaker 4: our fallen Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. Legislatively directed deadline that
• 1:41:09
Speaker 4: Governor Justice signed for the monument's completion is December thirty first,
• 1:41:13
Speaker 4: twenty twenty four. These people haven't even started. They've completely
• 1:41:16
Speaker 4: pushed our veterans to the back burner. Please have someone
• 1:41:19
Speaker 4: from these commissions on your show to provide an explanation
• 1:41:21
Speaker 4: and an apology to our West Virginia veterans, communities, and
• 1:41:25
Speaker 4: the legislature and governor for ignoring their deadlines. See what
• 1:41:29
Speaker 4: I can do about that, Texas. The panhandling ordinance is
• 1:41:32
Speaker 4: obviously targeted to the homeless. If it was about girl Scouts, politicians, etc.
• 1:41:36
Speaker 4: Why wasn't it proposed before? There have been so many
• 1:41:40
Speaker 4: political hacks setting in dangerous intersections and roads for years.
• 1:41:43
Speaker 4: I've said, you know with this that this could have
• 1:41:48
Speaker 4: unintended consequences. I'm not saying I'm for it or against
• 1:41:51
Speaker 4: i just want to Actually, I will say I'm for it,
• 1:41:55
Speaker 4: but I want to make sure it's done correctly, because
• 1:41:57
Speaker 4: it's been stricken down in court case after court court
• 1:42:00
Speaker 4: case on First Amendment issues. So I think that that's
• 1:42:04
Speaker 4: something that is very important, is that to be done correctly.
• 1:42:07
Speaker 4: I think that's what they're doing this time around. We
• 1:42:09
Speaker 4: shall see Texas, Dave. I want to thank the City
• 1:42:11
Speaker 4: of Charleston and the Kadawha County Commission for fighting the
• 1:42:14
Speaker 4: utility companies out of control rate hikes because our legislators
• 1:42:17
Speaker 4: won't do anything, or the Public Services Commission. I want
• 1:42:21
Speaker 4: to get into this a little bit more tomorrow with
• 1:42:23
Speaker 4: Canaan County Commissioner Bensolango, who's going to stop by tomorrow.
• 1:42:26
Speaker 4: Aaron Parker has a story posted about a wv metronews
• 1:42:28
Speaker 4: dot com. There's going to be a new bidder for
• 1:42:31
Speaker 4: the Canawha County Judicial Building renovation project. Now, you will
• 1:42:34
Speaker 4: recall that the original bids came in at about sixteen
• 1:42:38
Speaker 4: million dollars, which is about three million over what the
• 1:42:41
Speaker 4: county commissioners had hoped for. Now, this is all being
• 1:42:44
Speaker 4: done because the legislature has added three more magistrates and
• 1:42:47
Speaker 4: an additional circuit judge position, and they're simply out of
• 1:42:52
Speaker 4: space now. It's going to be discussed at the next
• 1:42:56
Speaker 4: County Commission meeting, which will be on Thursday, and again
• 1:42:59
Speaker 4: I'm going to have aniche mister Bensolango on the show
• 1:43:01
Speaker 4: to talk about it. Do want to get this in here?
• 1:43:03
Speaker 4: A little programming note our coverage of high school basketball.
• 1:43:07
Speaker 4: Believe it or not, Jeff and I were talking about
• 1:43:09
Speaker 4: this earlier. It's that time or high school basketball. Well,
• 1:43:12
Speaker 4: college is already underway, but high school basketball gets underway
• 1:43:15
Speaker 4: for us. Tonight we will have our first game of
• 1:43:17
Speaker 4: the season as Capital. We'll be traveling to South Charleston.
• 1:43:20
Speaker 4: Airtime here in WCCHS is at seven o'clock tonight. Interims
• 1:43:24
Speaker 4: will continue and we'll wrap up today at the Capitol.
• 1:43:26
Speaker 4: One of the things covered yesterday had to do with
• 1:43:29
Speaker 4: the behavioral issues in the classrooms.
• 1:43:31
  Speaker 2: Now.
• 1:43:32
Speaker 4: I remember reading several years ago that in like the
• 1:43:36
Speaker 4: nineteen fifties or something, the biggest problems that teachers facing
• 1:43:39
Speaker 4: the classrooms were things like talking, guilty party here, chewing gum,
• 1:43:44
Speaker 4: dress code violations, etc.
• 1:43:45
  Speaker 5: Etc.
• 1:43:46
Speaker 4: If you have kids or grandkids in public school now,
• 1:43:49
Speaker 4: or maybe you know someone who works in the public
• 1:43:51
Speaker 4: school system. Now it's a totally different world. And yesterday
• 1:43:56
Speaker 4: under the Dome, lawmakers got an earful of what educator
• 1:44:00
Speaker 4: face on a daily basis. A little background here, it's
• 1:44:05
Speaker 4: believed that this coming session, lawmakers are going to be
• 1:44:08
Speaker 4: looking at some bills that would allow elementary school teachers
• 1:44:11
Speaker 4: to remove disruptive students from their classrooms. Now, the bill
• 1:44:16
Speaker 4: was originally introduced during last year's session, but it kind
• 1:44:19
Speaker 4: of got tied up in committees and they had to
• 1:44:22
Speaker 4: go back and forth between cent in the House and
• 1:44:23
Speaker 4: so on and so forth. They ended up not getting done.
• 1:44:25
Speaker 4: They ran out of time. Dave Wilson TJ. Meadows are
• 1:44:27
Speaker 4: going to get into this further on talk line today.
• 1:44:29
Speaker 4: Some of the instructors told some horrific stories from the
• 1:44:33
Speaker 4: classrooms of West Virginia schools yesterday, and I think in
• 1:44:37
Speaker 4: talking to TJ and Wilson, they're actually going to plan
• 1:44:40
Speaker 4: on playing some of the sound from those. I heard
• 1:44:42
Speaker 4: it this morning and yesterday afternoon, just incredible. Educators talked
• 1:44:47
Speaker 4: about being spat upon, about having objects thrown at them,
• 1:44:51
Speaker 4: being kicked in the face, et cetera, et cetera. You know,
• 1:44:54
Speaker 4: every kid is entitled to an education, but something here
• 1:44:58
Speaker 4: has got to give. It absolutely has to and a
• 1:45:02
Speaker 4: Senate Education Chair Amy Grady, who herself is an elementary teacher,
• 1:45:05
Speaker 4: is going to join talk Line to talk about it today.
• 1:45:08
Speaker 4: Also on the show today, State Auditor and Attorney General
• 1:45:10
Speaker 4: J J. W. Mcuskey, State Democratic Party Chair in Delagate,
• 1:45:12
Speaker 4: Mike Pushkin and Marshall hath led the Director, Christian Spears,

Speaker 4: Dave Wilson, TJ meadows Hey. Look TJ's here now, how
• 1:45:20
  Speaker 4: are you man?
