- 0:39SPEAKER_00: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast, powered by the Nation, part of the Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall is here.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Hey Tristan, a few things have happened in the last couple hours.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: In the terms of our uh listeners, a few weeks for the Talking Tech Pod, I'd say.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Maybe I'd say that too.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, it's been a bit.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: It's been a minute uh since we've hopped on the mics, but we got a new lost episode.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: Maybe a new lost episode here or there.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Maybe we tried to talk about some stuff that are now not relevant.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: Um a lot of stuff has happened today on this Monday, December 2nd.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Uh year of our lord.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: How about how about a little uh how about a little rundown for you?
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Zach Kitley officially has taken the Florida Atlantic job.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Tinder Ruder, Marcel Yates are fired, Micah Hudson's in the transfer portal, Texas Tech finished with their best regular season record since 2009.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Taj Brooks became the all-time uh rushing yards leader at Texas Tech.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: Um hey Tristan, did we have a good or a bad season?
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: You know, whenever you line that up, uh I think a lot of us would say that but they must have had a bad season.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: You know, if they they lost both their coordinators and um you know that we have players transferring out.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: It sounds like Texas Tech had a bad season, but do we have a bad season, Steven?
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: We didn't have a bad season.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: In fact, we had our best season since 2009.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: 2009, eight and four, number one offense of the Big 12, by the way.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: Um hey Steven, last yeah, last time we had a season this good, we were 13.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: Hey, that's depressing.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: Middle school.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Yikes, yikes.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Um the Texas tech uh social media community has been a nightmare to say the least.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: Dude, we are unhinged, we have become unglued.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: I it's nuts, it's a lot of fun, but oh my gosh.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it's a lot of fun.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it's sometimes it's extremely frustrating.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: Um, where do you want to start?
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: You want to start with Zach Kitley?
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: That's the most recent thing.
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: I yeah, all right, let's react to Zach Kitley, which happened just an hour ago.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Zach Kitley has taken the Florida Atlantic head coaching job.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: This was something that was, I think, rumored a little bit actually, uh, throughout the season was that if Zach Kitley was gonna leave, it was gonna be for a lower tier head coaching job.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: And in fact, that's what it was.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Um number one offense in the Big 12, like I said, uh your Texas Tech Red Raiders.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: We averaged about 38 points a game, finished with an 8-4 record, uh, had a 1,500-yard rusher, had a 1,000-yard receiver.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: Barron Morton, I think, finished third in the Big 12 in passing yards.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: Uh, by all means, and no don't let the people on Twitter let you hear this, but by all means, Texas Tech had a really good offense this year.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: And if it weren't for a few situational scenarios throughout the season, I think uh uh we would all be looking at Zach Kidley uh in in a really good light.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: And I I think some of us, including myself, still do.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: I oh yeah, too.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Absolutely love what Zach Kitley brought to this program.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: But if you looked on Texas Tech Twitter, you would think that Zach Kitley is David Yost 2.0 and the worst thing to happen to Texas Tech since Matt Wells.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: Dude, it it is really funny.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: Um, I think Tex fan tech fans that are highly critical of Zach Kidley, I think they view him in a very microscopic sense instead of a more macro way, because usually whenever it comes to frustration, it comes down to some some play calling.
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: Like that seems kind of boneheaded.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: And that's absolutely fair.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: But the the thing is, is are we being entirely justified with Zach Kidley?
- 4:29SPEAKER_01: No matter what offensive coordinator you're gonna have, you're gonna be frustrated with occasional play calling.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's gonna be the same thing with defensive coordinator as well.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: Um, and so that's what's just so surprising to me.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: And we're because we're back to uh lethal, number one in the Big 12, top in the country offense that Tex Tech is famous for.
- 4:47SPEAKER_01: Um, and we're running a very Texas Tech branded offense with a probably more balanced in the running game than normal, but we're still frustrated with uh what I'm saying, we're um a portion of the fans are quite frustrated with having Zach Kitley at that helm.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: So this is truly a careful what you wish for situation with those fans, I think, because now they've got their wish, and let's see if they are correct that we could do better.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: I have I have doubts.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: I'm not saying that we can't go get a stud, but I don't know if you can just do flat out better than what we have at Kitley right now.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: I have a lot of doubts.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: Um just thinking about it now, because I just don't know how you get how you get somebody that's gonna give you the number one offense of the Big 12 again.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: I don't I I tweeted it out earlier, but uh continuity is such a rare thing in college football.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: And if these kids are having to relearn a new system every single year, having um, you know, due to coaching changes, different personnel, different offensive linemen, different quarterback, different whoever every single year, it's just not as much of an advantage as it could be.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: And I think you always want to retain the offensive coordinator that brought you the number one scoring offense of the Big 12.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: I just say that that should not be uh debate in my eyes.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: But yeah, I I offense is looked upon so much differently by this fan base uh compared to other fan bases because one are history, um, the air raid offense, Mike Leech, this fan base is used to high-powered offenses.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: And if we go three and out, there's always going to be somebody that's frustrated because they just can't understand how in the world we could not get a first down, a touchdown, a field goal, or any points on the board on every single possession.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: Uh that's just not how football works, in my opinion.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: And it should be most people's opinion.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: You it just doesn't happen like that, guys.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: We're we're no team in the world scores on every single possession, and yet as soon as we had that first three and out of the game, people were calling for Kitley's head, and it was ridiculous.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: And I was it was always a down moment and a bad look for our fan base when we had the amount of people that were doing that do that.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: I gotta say, if I'm gonna get really microscopic about this and really hone in on something, I'll tell you what I'm worried about is I'm worried about missing out on Will Hammond's development here.
- 7:15SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm not too worried about losing him.
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: I think he's locked into Texas Tech.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: But um I am nervous about, you know, he'll recruited, you know, he's obviously Zach Killy's gonna have a huge say in what quarterback you're going to get.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: And obviously Zach Kelly's gonna be a huge part of that recruiting process.
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: Uh, but I I worry that he he's not gonna be able to thrive in this Kitley system that seemed to have been built for him, you know, and that's that's what's gonna suck to miss out on, unless we get a guy that really follows the same sort of doctrine.
- 7:43SPEAKER_01: And obviously, it trickles down to all the other recruits.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: You know, the offensive weapons have been pretty nice.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: Um, and obviously, as we get further into this, we're gonna start seeing some of these players mature into more starting role uh players.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: Um, but I do worry about the setbacks we have with the players and the recruiting schemes as well, not just the on-field production.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: No, that's a great point because all the dominoes haven't fallen yet.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: I mean, Zach Kidley took the job an hour ago.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: We don't know what position coaches are going with him, we don't know what players are potentially going with him, or even just transferring due to Zach Kidley no longer being a Texas Tech.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: I don't think there's gonna be a lot of guys that want to follow him to FAU, but I do think some might.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: Some might some might.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: Some, yeah, some might, but I'm those top-level guys I don't think are gonna go down a level just to be with sex.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: Oh, Will Hammond is not is not going out to look or second, secondly, or uh Will Hammond is not gonna be an owl actually.
- 8:38SPEAKER_01: Micah Hudson could be an owl.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: Let's uh have we thought about this?
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: Hoot hoot.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: Right now, right?
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: Micah Hudson errors the transfer portal, Zach Kitley takes the FAU job.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: Are they connected?
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: Not a coincidence in my eyes, but no, but I think honestly, uh to your to your point, Will Hammond.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: We'll see who this next OC is because I don't know, man.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: You're gonna have to hire a guy that's really uh that's really right for the job and really up for it because uh you have what I believe is a really, really talented quarterback just waiting, you know, for his opportunity.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: He's probably gonna have to wait another year uh as we get you know uh continue with the Baron Morton saga at uh at Texas Tech.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: But I don't know, man.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: I I I think this reinforces the Baron Morton saga.
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: I feel like you absolutely want to stick with a veteran in a transition period, like without question.
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: Like I think without a doubt, you'd rather have Barron Morton because I know there's gonna be some uh quarterback controversy rolling into the off this offseason.
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: Obviously, there will be, but I really think the continuity, as you said, of having a veteran that has been at Tex Tech for this long and has seen the gridiron this many times, um, has seen the bright lights, I think you want that guy in a transition period like this, because we're talking about a complete team overhaul.
- 9:53SPEAKER_01: So I really would like to see some uh foundation remain on the play.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: Do we even do we even know if Baron Morton wants to stay?
- 10:01SPEAKER_01: I know that's what I'm saying.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: I I then I hope he does.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: I I feel like it wouldn't make sense for him to go anywhere.
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: Um, but I guess if he's really displeased with the offensive coordinator higher, uh, then anything can happen, of course.
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: But uh man, I I don't envy Joe Maguire's position right now at all.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: No, this is this is prove-of-time, and we can talk about that now with uh uh a Joey decision, a tough decision that he had to make uh just a day before uh the Zach Kitley announcement was uh Tim DeRooter and Marcel Yates have also been let go, just completely relieved of their duties.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: Uh Marcel Yates, secondary coach, Tim DeRouder, the defensive coordinator.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, it was it was definitely surprising to me at first when I found out.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: Like I know there was an obvious regression on the defensive side of the ball, it was not a good defense this year.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: There's no if, ands, or buts about it.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: But I also think Tim DeRuder did a pretty darn good job in the first two years at Texas Tech.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: And so I thought knowing Joey and knowing how he kind of approaches the program, that there wasn't really gonna be uh a change at that position.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: But obviously uh he thought otherwise and and made a tough decision here, uh, I think for him, and uh ended up looking elsewhere for a DC.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, yeah, obviously I'm speaking with some egg on my face.
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: Uh, I'm gonna speak for myself here.
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: You know, over and over again, I'd say this is the best DC we've had.
- 11:25SPEAKER_01: This is the best DC I've seen.
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: And honestly, dude, I think our statement remains.
- 11:29SPEAKER_01: I think he was the best DC I've seen as a fan for Texas Tech.
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: And the numbers don't back that up this season.
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: As you said, there's been a clear uh regression for the past three years.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: But uh this has to be one of the longest that DC has hung around in our fandom, don't you think?
- 11:44SPEAKER_01: So I think that says something to his quality.
- 11:47SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, I was listening to uh some Big 12 reaction pods, and one of them being uh Heartland College Sports with Pete Mundo, and I really appreciated what Pete Mundo had to say about the situation about the situation.
- 11:57SPEAKER_01: So I'm gonna kind of copy his sentiment because I think it's a good one.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: Saying that, you know, you have the best, you're Joey Maguire, and you have the best season since 2009, and you're you're on a three-win streak with uh Big 12 poll seasons with each each year being either more a constant uh foundation or even improving.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: Um to have the guts to move on from your uh from one of your coordinators, uh even though things are going good, I think just proves that you know it can be better.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: And I think that takes some guts, it takes it takes some balls to say that you know I'm not gonna just stick by my guys, I'm going to do what's best for what I think the for the program, and that's going out to get a new defensive coordinator.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: I thought that was I thought that was very insightful because that kind of changed my outlook on the situation.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: Uh Joey McGuire obviously has a plan.
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: You don't just go out and fire a uh defensive coordinator not knowing uh what your target list looks like.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: So um I'm excited to see how he transitions with this.
- 12:50SPEAKER_01: As for the Marcel Yates thing, I mean, I think that's a that that even if we kept him to Ruder, I'm sure you had to look elsewhere.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: Um, because our our secondary was the weakest part of the unit by Bar none.
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: I mean, I I think hindsight's 2020 and looking back at how much emphasis Joey was putting on the defense and their pressers, and um, you know, really we're not gonna win, we're not gonna get where we want to be without a defense.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: You know, there was clear and obvious discourse there uh amongst the coaching staff of of you know the performance of the defense this year.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: And while I think Tim DeRuder was fighting uh an uphill battle with the youth and the injuries that he experienced this year on the defensive side of the ball, um, I do think that he underperformed in that aspect.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: So uh you look back at kind of his career, he kind of changes the game when he first gets to a program and they do pretty well early on, and then they kind of teeter off as they go.
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: So, you know, I I I initially I didn't I didn't love it because again, continuity is huge in college football, and the more guys play in a system, the better I think they get, and the more developed they get and the quicker they develop.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: But um, obviously Joey thought different and he's there seeing it every day.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, I have no reason to not trust Joey McGuire at this point um on this decision.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: So uh, you know, I I'm hoping we can find another guy out there that really puts a better emphasis and and really changes uh the flow at Texas Tech of just not being a we have to score 40 points if we want to win this game, because that was not a fun part of this season.
- 14:22SPEAKER_01: Look, you you have the the pedigree of being Texas Tech, you know, being a P4 job, uh being a big Texas brand.
- 14:28SPEAKER_01: Um so I and and for its history, Texas Tech will have no issue garnering interest to take on the offensive coordinator position.
- 14:36SPEAKER_01: I think that's a dream job for a whole lot of young minds out there.
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: Um, but for the defensive coordinator position, do you think we're a little limited on what we can bring to Lubbock for that position side of the ball?
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: I know we're not the I know this is not the meme defense of the Kings very years, but at the same time, uh our our defensive coordinator position has been a rotating door.
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: And it and if you were looking the talent we've been having to work with, maybe obviously a lot of it's due to the injuries, how attractive, how big of a splash or how smart of a mind do you think you could bring into that fold?
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: I think you can bring in, I think you can bring in a lot of good people for this job.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: I think Texas Tech has proved that they're willing to dish out first off resources financially to go get a good coordinator, to go spend a million dollars on a coordinator if they need to.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: You know, Tim DeRuder was set to make 1.1 million, I think, this season.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: Um, and granted that's after a couple proof it years where he did a pretty good job to earn that, but obviously, um, you know, the it changes real quick in college football, and and one year you're getting an extension, and the next year you're getting fired.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: So um, no, I I don't I don't think because of Tech's history or because of, you know, maybe the this cloud over Lubbock, Texas, a bad defense for, you know, however many years is gonna stand in our way of hiring somebody that Joey wants to get.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: Um, are we gonna get a guy that, you know, are we gonna compete for uh a defensive coordinator with Oklahoma?
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: I don't think so, but you know, I think we're gonna get a fine defensive coordinator.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: But I I think where Joey needs to look here is is kind of a younger mind, uh an up and coming guy, maybe from a smaller school or uh maybe just an unexpected uh dude that he really believes in.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's tight in a lot of coaching circles.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: So I I don't really and I don't think he also makes this decision to fire Tim DeRuder without at least having some sort of uh uh some sort of thinking of who he's gonna bring in next.
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: I touched on that.
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: And I I and the reason why my brain was there is I wonder if he's going to go unorthodox with this.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: You know, could hiring high he higher, you know, Coach Perry uh is an unorthodox hire, hiring him out of the high school ranks.
- 16:53SPEAKER_01: Do you think he might look to do more of that grassroots movement and maybe look at an unexpected maybe Texas high school circle guy or go for the college experience?
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: It's I wonder if he's gonna go unorthodox like that, you know, to maybe give a recruiting a boon.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: Um, because you know it's been proven over and over again, like if you know how to coach ball, you know how to coach ball.
- 17:14SPEAKER_01: And I know there's obviously different levels to this, but like uh Chris Kleiman in Kansas State has proven that you could be an FCS coach and immediately jump up to the power level, and you Joey Maguire is proving you could be a high school coach and coach at the power level as well.
- 17:26SPEAKER_01: So I wonder if he is going to look at maybe an unorthodox hire like that.
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: I'm sure, I'm sure it's probably danced in his mind a little bit.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't think anything would would blow my mind on where he goes with this.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: Uh, I could see him looking at a former head coach that you know there's a guy over in uh over in Indiana that just got fired for having a horrible season, but was a top coordinator, won the top defensive coordinator uh uh award or whatever a couple years ago in the Purdue head coach.
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: Um, okay.
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: Let's see.
- 17:56SPEAKER_01: Who are you talking about?
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: Who he could potentially look at.
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: I could see uh him going to the country.
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: Was that OSU's coach?
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: I think he was.
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: Was that him?
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: Maybe that was him.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: I just know that he won like the top coordinator award before he took the job at Purdue.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: Obviously, that's a really difficult job to win at.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: Insane, yeah.
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: So I don't know.
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: I I think ultimately he's gonna go with a lower level coordinator that excelled um in you know, whether it's the American Conference or Conference USA or uh whoever.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: I think he's gonna look there and ultimately get somebody from there.
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: But um, I I really don't know.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: Like, like Joey, this is Joey's like first time he's had to replace a coordinator, so we're gonna learn a lot about his hiring methods.
- 18:40SPEAKER_01: It's speaking of uh replacing head coaches, do you know who Zach Hilly's replacing at FAU?
- 18:44SPEAKER_01: Uh I do.
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: I do actually.
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: He's uh he's replacing old old big balls Tom Herman.
- 18:52SPEAKER_01: Indeed, indeed.
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: That's just kind of funny how he that's who he's replacing.
- 18:56SPEAKER_01: I know, dude.
- 18:57SPEAKER_01: I can't believe you didn't I can't believe he didn't succeed there.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: Like, you know, he killed it at U of H.
- 19:01SPEAKER_01: I can't see I feel like that just like is an easier U of H shop, but whatever.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: I think I think Herman had a change of heart once he got to Texas.
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: He might be cooked.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: He might be cooked.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: My man might be cooked.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: I'm sure he's a pretty bright offensive mind, but to your way earlier point, though, you said Tim Deruder was our best defensive coordinator since we've been a fan.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: I want to give everybody a little context here because we've only been fans since we got to school in 2014.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: Um, I want to name off the defensive coordinators here.
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: Mike Smith was there in our 2014 year.
- 19:33SPEAKER_00: Uh, don't even remember him.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: Nope.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: David Gibbs?
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: For like three, four years.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: We hired him from Houston, I think.
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: Was he there for four years?
- 19:43SPEAKER_00: He was there for four years.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: He was there for four years.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: David Gibbs is there from 2015 to 2018.
- 19:51SPEAKER_01: Kingsbury hung his whole career on that guy?
- 19:54SPEAKER_01: Are you kidding me?
- 19:55SPEAKER_01: Uh wow.
- 19:56SPEAKER_01: So now that's why that's why Kingsbury got fired.
- 20:00SPEAKER_01: He could not move on, or whatever.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: I I think Cliff got fired for a multitude of reasons.
- 20:04SPEAKER_00: He got require fired for a few reasons, but and then I think the only guy that has any sort of comparison to Tim DeRooter would be Keith Patterson, who I actually thought did a pretty decent job when he was here, despite the Matt Wells year and how much of a disaster that tenure was.
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: I actually thought Keith Patterson did pretty well.
- 20:19SPEAKER_01: Keith was smart to go get a head coaching job when he had the offer.
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: You know, that was that was smart of him.
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: Because he's killing, he's killing it at ACU.
- 20:25SPEAKER_01: ACU is going to the uh postseason for the first time in school history in uh the FCS level.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: So big congrats to our our big rival in Abilene.
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: Don't bring them up again.
- 20:34SPEAKER_00: Stop it.
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: I can't I cannot do it with them.
- 20:40SPEAKER_00: We won the game, by the way.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: Um yes, and and then to your point that I didn't get to respond to, Marcel Yates had to go.
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: It was uh it was absolutely the worst secondary I've seen in a Texas tech uniform since Cliff Kingsbury, and that I just never want to see that again.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: Um, granted, again, a lot of youth.
- 20:59SPEAKER_00: You had to play uh a couple redshirt freshmen for a lot of a lot of the year at those cornerback positions.
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: You're playing some sophomores at the at the safeties, and um, yeah, it just wasn't it this year.
- 21:11SPEAKER_00: It wasn't it uh on that side of the ball.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: It didn't even seem like it improved really.
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: I mean, they had a good last game against West Virginia, but that Oklahoma State game was rough, and so yeah, it was it was time to part ways.
- 21:22SPEAKER_01: It it's funny though, like uh we we have arguably the best defenseman in the Big 12 in Jacob Rodriguez as well.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: So that's that's it's kind of funny how uh we had this absolute stud, but perhaps that's a result of having a such a weak defense around him as well, unfortunately.
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and ultimately what comes with losing both your coordinators is you're gonna probably lose a couple more position coaches as we keep going.
- 21:42SPEAKER_00: Probably um, whether they follow Zach Kitley to FAU, which I think at least a few of them are.
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: I don't know of how many, but I I think you're at least gonna lose one of them.
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: Uh maybe smart too, for the most part.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, if you get an upgrade at the position down there, you you take it.
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: But and you have to worry about the next coordinator coming in just clean.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: House and bringing his absolutely 100%.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: And then the next thing you have to worry about, obviously, is players transferring with the landscape of college football.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: Um, that it's about relationships and money.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: And you know, when you lose your top coordinators, uh, you never know what's gonna happen.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: So I I'm just not gonna sit here and act like I'm surprised if I see anything happen, even if it's somebody like Baron Morton deciding to, you know, part ways and go somewhere else.
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: I'm not saying that's gonna happen.
- 22:25SPEAKER_00: I have no indication that Barron Morton is gonna leave Texas Tech.
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: I have no indication that Will Hammond is gonna leave Texas Tech or anybody else, Caleb Douglas or Coy Aken or any of these other guys that are studs on offense, but um, you just don't know.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: You just don't know, right?
- 22:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you don't know.
- 22:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's that's a really good point, man.
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: Um, I just hope that some of the veteran players are just gonna stick it out, you know, for the for the last bit of the years.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: I mean, jumping around, it's it's not always a good thing.
- 22:47SPEAKER_01: I mean, you look you look at how Alan Bowman's career fizzled out in a pretty, you know, uh lack of a better word, embarrassing way.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: Uh, you don't want to just be that guy that floats around like that.
- 22:57SPEAKER_01: So I really think sticking it out and sticking, I mean, here's the thing at the end of the day, the you still have the most important person in charge there, your head coach.
- 23:06SPEAKER_01: So like it's not like it's not like the coordinator uh is the only guy that you're ever interacting with.
- 23:10SPEAKER_01: Obviously, at the end of the day, the buck stops at the head the man at the helm.
- 23:14SPEAKER_01: So um Joe McGuire's got a really big task ahead of him.
- 23:17SPEAKER_01: I mean, I feel like we sat there and talked about what you're what we're he might be looking for in the defense coordinator position, which is probably the more important question at the end of the day for a school like Texas Tech.
- 23:26SPEAKER_01: Um, but on offense, where what direction do you think he's gonna go in?
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: Or do you think we're just kind of talking circles about the the same way we did with the DC?
- 23:33SPEAKER_00: I I honestly I have no idea either way.
- 23:36SPEAKER_00: Uh what I was really disappointed to see was that Ben Arbuckle took the job at OU.
- 23:40SPEAKER_00: He was kind of a Zach, he was Zach Kidley's, I think, best friend.
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: Uh, he was at Washington State this year, and we saw um the the beating he put on us and Pullman.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: And he's just another rising star, young dude who's who's gonna probably be a head coach uh eventually.
- 23:54SPEAKER_00: But I I would have loved to have winning him too.
- 23:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he was up for a lot of coordinator positions.
- 23:59SPEAKER_01: Um like when Kitley was, because he'll like between us and Auburn, remember?
- 24:03SPEAKER_00: For sure, for sure.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: So um I don't know.
- 24:06SPEAKER_00: I I really I don't think any names have been brought up yet quite on on like insider boards or anything like that.
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: So we shall see.
- 24:14SPEAKER_00: Uh that that'll probably come next week.
- 24:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's just like like we we touched on before, I do not envy Joe McGuire.
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: And it just it really sucks as fans that like you said, we have no continuity, and it kind of feels like I uh I it might be negative thing to say, but it feels like it's impossible to improve next year.
- 24:33SPEAKER_01: Uh, maybe that's just me being a Debbie Downer.
- 24:36SPEAKER_01: Like I I I I worry with that it's since you can't progress in either system and get players more honed in and locked in on what you're doing with the experience now on the game field.
- 24:46SPEAKER_01: I I worry if eight wins is the ceiling next year.
- 24:50SPEAKER_01: I and which which wouldn't be bad.
- 24:52SPEAKER_01: I'm not saying that would be bad.
- 24:53SPEAKER_01: Like that's at as a tech fan, you're okay with that being most seasons.
- 24:58SPEAKER_01: If you're not okay with that, I don't know what's just what school you've been a fan of these past 20 years.
- 25:02SPEAKER_01: But um if but I I I do I do I know we're always like, what's the next step?
- 25:07SPEAKER_01: And that's how you should be like as a fan, but I feel like whenever you're losing the second and third most important coach on the team, how how how how much room is there to jump?
- 25:18SPEAKER_01: Or am I just being negative?
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: I don't think you can put a floor or a ceiling when you don't have when you don't know who your coordinators are next year.
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: Um, so I I get your point.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: I get what you're trying to say is that you know it's really difficult to replace two coordinators and then still be, you know, what you were this season.
- 25:36SPEAKER_00: And that may be true, but we may have very much have an upgrade at both positions.
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: You never know.
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: You never know.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: Like I think it is going to be tough to get an upgrade over Zach Kitley.
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: I don't I don't know if it's gonna be very tough to upgrade this defense, you know.
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: So uh we shall see next year, and uh, and ultimately it's up to Joey Maguire to make those tough tough choices and hopefully really good choices.
- 25:57SPEAKER_00: But hey, that's that's half of being a head coach in college football, man, is is you're gonna lose coordinators and you're gonna have to find replacements and you're gonna have to continue to win games.
- 26:07SPEAKER_00: And you know, if the culture's there, you should be fine.
- 26:10SPEAKER_00: And uh hopefully we are.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: I mean, you are the CEO of the team, and I I hope that Joey McGuire does embody that behind the scenes.
- 26:19SPEAKER_01: It knows that he has to hire manager, middle managers, to make this the business run successfully.
- 26:24SPEAKER_01: Um, and like I know, I know it might be weak to keep coming back to this, but like he was a very successful high school coach, and you do have to hire uh O season, DC's in high school as well.
- 26:33SPEAKER_01: So this isn't his first time through it.
- 26:35SPEAKER_01: He has to know what he's looking for.
- 26:37SPEAKER_01: Um and I because he hasn't had to do this since he's been tech head tech's head coach, and that's a blessing as a coach.
- 26:42SPEAKER_01: That means he's been doing okay and doing good.
- 26:44SPEAKER_01: Uh he hasn't had to throw any mulligans in.
- 26:46SPEAKER_01: And DeRuder was only a quasi-mulligan, like he didn't really have to fire DeRooter at the end of the day with the record we had.
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: So he hasn't had to do the uh the staff flush to get another year thing.
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: Um, it's just he's gonna just straight up have to keep the train moving in the right direction.
- 27:01SPEAKER_01: Like I said, I worry if it, you know, I I hope that you can either maintain or improve going forward.
- 27:08SPEAKER_01: Well, we didn't want I want flat out improvement on deep defense.
- 27:11SPEAKER_01: I don't know if I just don't think it's gonna, I just don't know if you're gonna like breach through on offense too much because it'll be really damn good.
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: 100%.
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: Uh what we didn't talk about is the potential for Texas Tech to um, you know, maybe give a little upgrade to somebody that's within the program right now.
- 27:27SPEAKER_00: So I don't think that's gonna happen.
- 27:29SPEAKER_00: I don't think Joey's gonna, you know, give a position coach the DC or the OC job right now on this current staff.
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: But if I were to, you know, keep an eye on somebody, it would be Josh Cochrane or Josh Bookbinder for potentially even getting an upgrade there, maybe even Coach CJ Ayu.
- 27:45SPEAKER_00: Um, Joey McGuire has said a lot of good things about Coach Ayu throughout the year.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: Um, but I I don't think I I don't ultimately think that's gonna happen, but I'm also not rolling it out.
- 27:55SPEAKER_01: You know, that's gotta be a tough position to be in as a head coach and a position coach, right?
- 27:59SPEAKER_01: Because obviously these guys would love the shot at a promotion and more responsibility.
- 28:04SPEAKER_01: These guys are competitors, it's what they do.
- 28:06SPEAKER_01: So, and I I I I worry I hope that this cycle doesn't sour the relationship between them and Maguire, you know?
- 28:14SPEAKER_01: It's because it's at the end, obviously at the end of the day, it's all business.
- 28:17SPEAKER_01: Um, but because I guess you gotta look at like remember whenever um they were shipping and Baylor was shifting from uh uh coach Rule to uh now Aranda, uh Maguire was hired by Rule and Aranda kept him in the same position, even though Maguire tried to get that head coaching spot.
- 28:33SPEAKER_01: So I guess you gotta hope that Maguire understands he can he can maintain those relationships while keeping it professional.
- 28:38SPEAKER_01: That's what he expected them, of course.
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: And it's all gonna depend on the new hire.
- 28:42SPEAKER_00: Um, if he wants to bring in his own own guys, like we said earlier, or um, or potentially you know keep a position coach or two.
- 28:49SPEAKER_00: I know even from uh Matt Wells to Joey, he kept on a couple guys here that were already on the roster.
- 28:55SPEAKER_00: Um, but we'll see.
- 28:57SPEAKER_00: We'll see.
- 28:58SPEAKER_00: Um all right, you want to move on to to news that just spent they sent Texas Tech fans absolutely spiraling into a tizzy?
- 29:08SPEAKER_00: Into a tizzy more like yesterday.
- 29:12SPEAKER_00: It was yesterday.
- 29:13SPEAKER_00: Wow, it feels like last week already.
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: Um, Micah Hudson has entered the transfer portal, and more importantly, Jalen Peoples has entered the transfer portal.
- 29:22SPEAKER_00: Just kidding.
- 29:24SPEAKER_00: No, uh, no, don't don't you're a jerk, dude.
- 29:27SPEAKER_00: Don't mean to disrespect uh the great Jalen Peoples, but uh no, Micah Hudson, former five-star best recruit in Texas Tech history, has decided to enter the transfer portal and um potentially look for a new home.
- 29:40SPEAKER_00: Maybe he comes back, maybe this is all something to get an NIL deal boost.
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 29:46SPEAKER_00: But what I do know is that Micah Hudson is in the transfer portal.
- 29:49SPEAKER_00: Uh well, I guess you can't technically enter the portal until December 9th, so this is just like intends to enter the transfer portal.
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: So I don't know.
- 29:58SPEAKER_00: Give me your thoughts.
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: I feel like a lot of people are making this an indictment of Texas Tech and perhaps the decisions the coaches were making.
- 30:06SPEAKER_01: And I there might be some validity to that.
- 30:08SPEAKER_01: Like if maybe you weren't playing him enough just to keep him happy, um or or maybe not.
- 30:13SPEAKER_01: But obviously, we said over and over again that we trust the coaches to do what you need to do to win.
- 30:18SPEAKER_01: Um but with this, I think it's just text tech is a victim of the new world of the transfer portal.
- 30:27SPEAKER_01: Like I don't think this is an indictment on TechStech singularly.
- 30:31SPEAKER_01: I just think that this is a young man who uh is going maybe feels more like a free agent than he does a player on a team.
- 30:39SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 30:40SPEAKER_01: Than a than a than someone that plays a role that needs to be filled.
- 30:43SPEAKER_01: I think he might see himself as more of a as a mercenary who can, you know, go and just get where he can get his star power.
- 30:50SPEAKER_01: And I mean, at the it there's obviously two arguments to that, right?
- 30:52SPEAKER_01: Like it's A, this is a team sport, so you if you are gonna stick around or not, or B, you're gonna go and make the biggest impact you can to get to get the most money, get to the next level, um, and all of that.
- 31:04SPEAKER_01: It's obviously insanely frustrating as a Texas Tech fan, uh, whether we're gonna, you know, be too disappointed about the situation or not.
- 31:11SPEAKER_01: It's just it sucks seeing your uh best player, but best recruited player in history not want to stick it out and you know, wait until he matures a little bit to really enter the college game.
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, um, I think it's important to differentiate highest recruited player and best player because some people seem to think Micah Hudson is already our best player.
- 31:33SPEAKER_01: Guys, we have a best player, then that will never be topped.
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: Let's let's just sit back and look at this for a second, because I'm not denying that Micah Hudson's a talented kid.
- 31:46SPEAKER_00: You have to be a talented kid to be a five-star recruit.
- 31:49SPEAKER_00: Do all five-star recruits always end up being first-round NFL draft picks and college superstars and everything like that?
- 31:57SPEAKER_00: The chances higher, of course.
- 31:59SPEAKER_00: Absolutely, the chances are, and I'm not even saying Micah Hudson's not gonna be that, but to be so upset about this right now for a guy who caught eight passes for 123 yards and no touchdowns last year for Texas Tech, uh, who was coming off injuries, granted, I just think there's a multitude of reasons why Micah Hudson has entered his name into the transfer portal, and it's money related, and I think it is also not getting a lot of playing time.
- 32:24SPEAKER_00: I think it's injury related, I think it's relationship related.
- 32:27SPEAKER_00: I I don't I don't think it's one singular issue or reason losing his offensive coordinator.
- 32:33SPEAKER_00: But he is losing his offensive coordinator.
- 32:35SPEAKER_00: Um, but you know, ultimately, whether he does end up leaving or not, this isn't the end of the world.
- 32:43SPEAKER_00: The wide receiver room is not something that we need to worry about right now at Texas Tech, even though we are losing Josh Kelly, which is a bigger deal than losing Micah Hudson, guys.
- 32:53SPEAKER_00: Uh thousand-yard receiver, by the way.
- 32:55SPEAKER_00: Um so I just don't I just don't see the reason why you get upset about it.
- 33:02SPEAKER_00: And I and I don't like it frustrated me all season with with the play Micah Hudson cronies.
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: It was like yeah, it was like the Kitley guys that uh the Kitley haters and the Micah Hudson, why is he not playing guys?
- 33:17SPEAKER_00: It just it frustrated the hell out of me because to play a true freshman immediately is a rarity in college football.
- 33:24SPEAKER_00: Yes, I know the Ohio State receiver played a lot of snaps and was really good this year.
- 33:28SPEAKER_00: Yes, I know the five star that played for Oregon had a lot of snaps and was good this year.
- 33:33SPEAKER_00: Those guys are not all the same player.
- 33:35SPEAKER_00: Micah Hudson is not the same player as that Ohio State receiver or as the Oregon receiver or as a four-star receiver that potentially had a really good season that we that went off the radar as a true freshman.
- 33:45SPEAKER_00: It doesn't, they don't, they're not all the same.
- 33:47SPEAKER_00: Not all five stars are immediately ready to play college football.
- 33:51SPEAKER_00: And this guy coming off an entire offseason where he was injured and apparently dealing with later season injuries as well.
- 33:57SPEAKER_00: I mean, what what are you doing here?
- 34:00SPEAKER_00: What are we doing here?
- 34:01SPEAKER_00: Being this upset about Micah Hudson transferring out.
- 34:06SPEAKER_01: I uh it's gonna sound cynical, but I think you're right.
- 34:09SPEAKER_01: I I think I think someone is whispering in his ear, like you can just you can get some sharks and all you can shun these waters and get some sharks in there and get you paid.
- 34:17SPEAKER_01: And they're not wrong.
- 34:18SPEAKER_01: There's gonna be a school that's gonna get out there if it doesn't stick around, and we might be that school I'm about to say.
- 34:23SPEAKER_01: There's gonna be a school out there that that's gonna sound maybe a little uh off base, but someone's gonna pay way too much for this kid.
- 34:31SPEAKER_01: And and I obviously obviously are eating I know that's what I'm saying.
- 34:35SPEAKER_01: That's this could be this that school could be us, but what I'm saying is um he I could be eating my words, and this kid can be just generational, like in the sense of Mahomes' or Crabtree was.
- 34:46SPEAKER_01: But I the odds of that happening aren't exactly high.
- 34:52SPEAKER_01: And as a Texas Tech fan, you cannot look at our team and say the problem's the receivers.
- 34:57SPEAKER_01: Like you just said, Kelly was our way we went the thousand yards for the first time in since 2018.
- 35:04SPEAKER_00: Coy had a great season, Caleb Douglas had a great season, exactly.
- 35:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean 100%.
- 35:09SPEAKER_01: That's not a that's not a position group.
- 35:10SPEAKER_01: As a Texas Tech fan, you should be worried about at all, okay?
- 35:14SPEAKER_01: Like and and losing him, and like I like I said, it's not an indictment on Texas Tech, okay?
- 35:19SPEAKER_01: That's this that is the new world.
- 35:21SPEAKER_01: Like we're benefiting from the new world, but we also have to pay the toll of the new world.
- 35:24SPEAKER_01: And this is the new world of college athletics, is they will be looking for the bag, especially with a kid that has so much name recognition for a kid his age, like he can get out there and get paid way too much.
- 35:36SPEAKER_01: And that's not that's not an offense on him.
- 35:38SPEAKER_01: But remember, we are talking about college programs, they're not NFL teams, not not uh not anything like that.
- 35:45SPEAKER_01: Just like a 19-year-old, he'll be like 19, the 19-year-old kid getting paid millions and millions of dollars to go out there and make some catches.
- 35:51SPEAKER_01: And he could, like I said, he could have to make it make a huge difference and worth every penny.
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: But as a Texas tech team, would you rather spend all of that on one kid or spread the love and get some big boys on the lines and or or some good backs and you know, and some you know really bolster your defensive unit in an O-line?
- 36:07SPEAKER_01: What would you rather have as a tech fan?
- 36:09SPEAKER_00: You know, you have plenty to improve upon on this Texas Tech team right now, and it's not the wide receivers.
- 36:15SPEAKER_00: So that's all I'm saying.
- 36:16SPEAKER_00: I'm not even I'm not even trying to like you know talk bad on Micah Hudson for you know leaving the program or anything like that.
- 36:23SPEAKER_00: I'm just trying to provide a different perspective because some people seem to believe that this guy is already the best receiver on on Texas Tech's team, and last season proved that he was not.
- 36:33SPEAKER_00: I don't I don't think call me crazy.
- 36:36SPEAKER_00: I I don't think the coaches don't play him if he's the best receiver on Texas Tech's roster.
- 36:41SPEAKER_00: You know, I just don't.
- 36:42SPEAKER_00: Um and do you sacrifice snaps from a more proven guy like Koyakin or Caleb Douglas, who again both had really good seasons, had really solid games.
- 36:53SPEAKER_00: I think both of them had a three touchdown game this year.
- 36:55SPEAKER_00: It's the receivers were not the issue.
- 36:58SPEAKER_00: And just because Micah Hudson's leaving does not mean that Texas Ted is screwed forever and will, you know, is is never gonna get another five-star kit again.
- 37:08SPEAKER_01: I'm not looking at the sheet right now, but there's no way our top receivers this year were anything higher than three stars across the board.
- 37:16SPEAKER_00: Taj Brooks Taj Brooks was a three-star athlete.
- 37:18SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 37:19SPEAKER_00: Patrick Mahomes was a three-star athlete.
- 37:20SPEAKER_01: Yep, 100%.
- 37:21SPEAKER_01: And I'm not and obviously we can blow sunshine up our butts about the whole like we find the diamonds of the rough.
- 37:25SPEAKER_01: I mean, which we do clearly.
- 37:27SPEAKER_00: But um I'm not saying it's I'm not saying we shouldn't try to get five stars again.
- 37:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
- 37:33SPEAKER_00: We should continue to recruit highly.
- 37:36SPEAKER_00: And I'm not trying to like, I'm not trying to say that four stars are better.
- 37:40SPEAKER_01: Like oh, no, no, no, I'm not, I'm not, and I'm not trying to say that either.
- 37:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 37:44SPEAKER_01: I'm just saying that that clearly we know how to identify talent at these positions, and I know the best teams in the country do get five and four stars.
- 37:52SPEAKER_01: We do too.
- 37:53SPEAKER_01: We obviously do.
- 37:54SPEAKER_01: It's our the the program, the recruiting isn't done because we potentially are losing one five-star receiver.
- 38:00SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 38:01SPEAKER_01: Um, so we, I mean, we have we have a four-star quarterback lined up.
- 38:05SPEAKER_01: Our quarterback right now is a four-star.
- 38:06SPEAKER_01: We get four stars.
- 38:07SPEAKER_01: All right, it's and so we're gonna be okay.
- 38:10SPEAKER_01: It's not like it's not the end of the world.
- 38:12SPEAKER_01: I understand the frustration because I mean, obviously, a really exciting name to put on the field.
- 38:16SPEAKER_01: The announcers will be going nuts and all that, and gets eyes on TechSech and uh shows that we could play with the big boys, and we did.
- 38:22SPEAKER_01: We proved it.
- 38:22SPEAKER_01: We proved we got out and got there.
- 38:24SPEAKER_01: Like I said, we we benefit from the modern NIL uh plus everything else world, but we also have to pay the toll, and we are paying the toll right now.
- 38:32SPEAKER_00: Well, and again, to a little bit of Micah Hudson's credit, if we're in the same position that he's in in this landscape of NIL, you're gonna go see what there is to offer after this year.
- 38:44SPEAKER_00: You're uh you're getting offers from LSU, I'm sure, Texas, the big bag programs that are gonna offer you the the house to potentially come and see.
- 38:54SPEAKER_00: I would definitely check that out too, you know?
- 38:56SPEAKER_00: And so I don't know.
- 38:58SPEAKER_00: We'll we'll have to see.
- 38:59SPEAKER_00: Uh, we don't know the inner workings of this program.
- 39:02SPEAKER_00: Um, we'll see if Micah Hudson's a red raider looking like he's not, but hey, uh we'll be fine.
- 39:08SPEAKER_00: I think we'll be okay.
- 39:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we'll be okay.
- 39:11SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 39:12SPEAKER_00: All right, man.
- 39:13SPEAKER_00: Uh by the way, Texas Tech finished with their best regular season record since 2009.
- 39:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, let's not talk about the games, huh?
- 39:21SPEAKER_00: We went eight and four, Tristan.
- 39:24SPEAKER_00: Let's go.
- 39:25SPEAKER_00: We went eight and four in two thousand nine.
- 39:27SPEAKER_01: That was a lot of gonna be tied three, third, or fourth in the biggest.
- 39:33SPEAKER_00: Died for third, died for third.
- 39:34SPEAKER_01: Um doesn't stink, Steven.
- 39:37SPEAKER_01: Does not stink.
- 39:38SPEAKER_00: Does not stink, yes.
- 39:39SPEAKER_00: The Baylor game was disappointing.
- 39:41SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes, the TCU game was disappointing, yes, the second half of Colorado was disappointing.
- 39:46SPEAKER_00: Um, but you did beat the two teams that are gonna play for the Big 12 championship.
- 39:50SPEAKER_01: Um which kind of stinks, but kind of rocks at the same time.
- 39:53SPEAKER_00: Kind of stinks, but we're actually the Big 12 champions.
- 39:55SPEAKER_01: We get two trophies.
- 39:57SPEAKER_00: Two of them, both.
- 39:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, who doesn't matter who wins, they gotta give it to us.
- 40:01SPEAKER_01: So who do you got in that game, by the way?
- 40:04SPEAKER_00: Uh, I think I got Iowa State.
- 40:06SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 40:06SPEAKER_00: I'm leading Arizona State.
- 40:07SPEAKER_00: Uh, they've had a heck of a year, and I am a Dillingham stan.
- 40:12SPEAKER_00: I am a big fan of that guy, especially after uh we played him and how he was in the pressers and leading up and everything like that.
- 40:18SPEAKER_00: I just I think he's a really good young head coach, and he's gonna take that program uh a good ways if he stays there for very long.
- 40:24SPEAKER_00: I don't know, maybe one of the big boys comes called.
- 40:26SPEAKER_01: So it'd be tough to find out.
- 40:27SPEAKER_00: Okay, that would be tough, but it's happened.
- 40:29SPEAKER_00: It's happened before.
- 40:30SPEAKER_00: It has, it has, it has.
- 40:31SPEAKER_01: But for good reasons sometimes, though.
- 40:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, no doubt.
- 40:35SPEAKER_00: Um, no, I mean, really, you know, uh definitely a good end to the season after the thromping 52 to 15 victory over West Virginia in Lubbock to cap off apparently the Zach Kidley and Tim DeRooter era at Texas Tech.
- 40:50SPEAKER_00: Um but dang it this is it's frustrating because it's like we put it all together finally, and then now everybody's gone.
- 40:59SPEAKER_01: And we have a bowl game ahead of us.
- 41:01SPEAKER_01: We do.
- 41:01SPEAKER_01: So, like now I kind of want some of the the worst projections to be honest, you know?
- 41:08SPEAKER_01: Like now I kind of want to be put up against a navy rather than an uh an LSU or an AM.
- 41:13SPEAKER_00: I don't care.
- 41:14SPEAKER_00: I will I still want to play.
- 41:15SPEAKER_00: I'd rather play.
- 41:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'd rather play AM or LSU or Arkansas or somebody one of those.
- 41:20SPEAKER_01: Oh, I'll take Arkansas.
- 41:22SPEAKER_00: I don't want to play, I don't want to play freaking Navy, man.
- 41:24SPEAKER_00: I don't want to play the troops.
- 41:26SPEAKER_00: I don't want to play I don't want to play uh Texas State.
- 41:29SPEAKER_00: I don't want to play any of those.
- 41:30SPEAKER_00: I want to play a fun team.
- 41:32SPEAKER_01: Well, uh putting us up against T-State would be uh a crime at this point with our record.
- 41:38SPEAKER_00: That'd be mean.
- 41:38SPEAKER_00: That'd be mean that'd be a crime.
- 41:40SPEAKER_01: They won seven games.
- 41:41SPEAKER_01: Great season in some since Santa Marcus.
- 41:43SPEAKER_01: Like uh GK Kinney has got that machine going, and I'd be nervous if I was a Bobcat fan with the sharks that are in the water now, you know.
- 41:50SPEAKER_01: Um, because they're sniffing it, dude.
- 41:52SPEAKER_01: Uh I'm in it, I'm in some some some fun chats and with Big 12 folks, and people at UCF are saying they're gonna keep their eyes on him.
- 41:58SPEAKER_01: So um, yeah, so yeah, it'll be interesting to see how that unfolds because now we got a few vacancies in the Big 12 with West Virginia finally not trusting the climb with Neil Brown.
- 42:07SPEAKER_01: Um sorry we have to get him fired.
- 42:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, sorry.
- 42:11SPEAKER_01: I think he was fired before a game.
- 42:13SPEAKER_01: I think I think they won.
- 42:15SPEAKER_00: I don't think they would have kept him, but yeah, neil Neil was not gonna survive this season, but uh the climb is officially not trusted in West Virginia.
- 42:22SPEAKER_00: We could see a new coach over in Utah.
- 42:25SPEAKER_00: We don't know.
- 42:25SPEAKER_00: Can he do that?
- 42:26SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 42:27SPEAKER_00: What's his name?
- 42:28SPEAKER_00: Kyle Whittingham.
- 42:29SPEAKER_01: He's retiring.
- 42:30SPEAKER_01: He's not he is not coming back.
- 42:32SPEAKER_00: He may, he may it looks like the writing's on the wall that he is he is gonna retire after this season, but uh we shall see.
- 42:38SPEAKER_00: There might be some turnover next year.
- 42:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, dude, and uh with UCF, like they got the best, they got the perfect situation with Florida State hire hiring him in quotation marks away.
- 42:50SPEAKER_01: So that was perfect because I that that has to excuse them from the buyout.
- 42:55SPEAKER_01: So so that's that's that's perfect.
- 42:57SPEAKER_01: They have all that money to just go straight into hiring the next guy, which is an ideal situation.
- 43:01SPEAKER_01: But dude, I don't want that job.
- 43:03SPEAKER_01: I think UCF is going to be rough for a while.
- 43:06SPEAKER_00: I don't think it's a bad job.
- 43:07SPEAKER_00: I think it's a pretty job.
- 43:08SPEAKER_00: You're not you're in a recruiting hotbed, you know?
- 43:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but I just think you gotta rebuild ahead of you, and it's gonna be rough.
- 43:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, they may, they may, but hey, we'll you never know.
- 43:19SPEAKER_00: You never know in the Big 12.
- 43:20SPEAKER_00: We picked Arizona State as last in the conference, and hey, they're playing for the Big 12.
- 43:24SPEAKER_01: Okay, you're how about this?
- 43:25SPEAKER_01: Would you rather the uh West, you're you're an up-and-coming head coach.
- 43:27SPEAKER_01: Would you rather the West Virginia or UCF job?
- 43:30SPEAKER_00: West Virginia.
- 43:30SPEAKER_01: Me too.
- 43:31SPEAKER_01: All day easily, yeah.
- 43:32SPEAKER_00: It's yeah, it's it's a it's a better program.
- 43:34SPEAKER_00: I think you're gonna have better resources up there.
- 43:36SPEAKER_00: Yep, um, then in and you don't have less competitive, you have less competition.
- 43:39SPEAKER_00: I mean, you're sure you're not fighting against Florida and Florida State for recruits all the time.
- 43:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh, but but uh and I mean not the West Virginia didn't have any competition up there with Penn State and all that all that, but uh you know, yeah, you know, it's uh yeah, I'd take the West Virginia gig.
- 43:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, same.
- 43:56SPEAKER_00: And I would make I would force them to trust the climb.
- 43:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, they would trust.
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: To climb.
- 44:02SPEAKER_01: We're keeping that.
- 44:04SPEAKER_00: I saw a tweet from one of the West Virginia burgers that says uh there's a newly fired P4 head coach that has great experience that we should look into hiring, and it was a picture of Neil Brown.
- 44:20SPEAKER_00: They're having a lot of fun with it.
- 44:24SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 44:26SPEAKER_01: That's really funny.
- 44:26SPEAKER_01: Well, bring Neil home.
- 44:28SPEAKER_00: Bring Neil home.
- 44:29SPEAKER_00: Bring Neil Neil and Dana.
- 44:31SPEAKER_00: Bring the West Virginia boys home.
- 44:34SPEAKER_00: Co-O C?
- 44:35SPEAKER_00: Did somebody say co-OC?
- 44:37SPEAKER_00: Dana Holgerson and Neil Brown at Texas Tech?
- 44:40SPEAKER_00: Bring them back.
- 44:41SPEAKER_00: Special teams coordinator Matt Wells.
- 44:44SPEAKER_00: Anybody?
- 44:45SPEAKER_00: No.
- 44:45SPEAKER_00: Tremendous.
- 44:46SPEAKER_00: No.
- 44:48SPEAKER_00: God, what a night.
- 44:49SPEAKER_00: Oh my.
- 44:50SPEAKER_00: Let's just bring back all the ass coaches to come back on staff.
- 44:54SPEAKER_01: For outro, you should have head coach of Texas Tech at one time, Matt Wells.
- 44:59SPEAKER_01: Tremendous.
- 45:00SPEAKER_01: With the saying it was tremendous.
- 45:02SPEAKER_01: One more time.
- 45:04SPEAKER_00: Oh, and you're just that quote when he was asked what he likes about Lubbock.
- 45:08SPEAKER_01: I like that I can drive my kid to practice.
- 45:12SPEAKER_00: Thanks, Matt.
- 45:14SPEAKER_00: True words, Matt.
- 45:16SPEAKER_00: You're totally not getting fired, Matt.
- 45:19SPEAKER_00: There you go, dude.
- 45:20SPEAKER_00: Um, okay.
- 45:22SPEAKER_00: Now that we're we're past all of the major news and stuff, I just want to take a second to uh give Taj Brooks his flowers, give him some praise.
- 45:30SPEAKER_00: We saw him final time in Jones ATT Stadium.
- 45:34SPEAKER_00: Uh I just want to name off some stats here.
- 45:36SPEAKER_00: So for his career, 879 carries in a Texas Tech uniform, 4,557 rushing yards, 45 rushing touchdowns, 545 receiving yards, another two receiving touchdowns.
- 45:50SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, split carries early on in his career with Sir Roderick Thompson.
- 45:54SPEAKER_00: They were a dynamic duo.
- 45:55SPEAKER_00: Uh took over as the lead running back in 2023, set the world on fire at Texas Tech, became one of the best running backs in the nation the last couple of years, all-time leader in rushing yards at Texas Tech, number two in all-time rushing touchdowns at Texas Tech, went over 100 yards in every single game in 2024.
- 46:12SPEAKER_00: Only him and Ashton Genty did it, who, as a candidate for the Heisman, um averaged 10.6 games played a season in five seasons at Texas Tech.
- 46:23SPEAKER_00: Played seven games as a true freshman, played 11 games here in his final year.
- 46:28SPEAKER_00: Just a ridiculous player for Texas Tech, an absolute legend at the running back position, and deserves his name right up there with Pat Mahomes and the rest uh and Jones ATT Stadium.
- 46:41SPEAKER_00: What a what a phenomenal player.
- 46:43SPEAKER_01: Absolutely, man.
- 46:44SPEAKER_01: Utter electric, man.
- 46:45SPEAKER_01: Just shoot.
- 46:46SPEAKER_01: We're gonna miss him so much.
- 46:48SPEAKER_01: That's gonna be the biggest hole you're gonna miss next season.
- 46:50SPEAKER_01: Just the reliability that you can just hand the ball to Tosh Brooks.
- 46:54SPEAKER_01: He'll get into the scrum.
- 46:56SPEAKER_01: He's gonna pop out on the other side like a gopher.
- 46:58SPEAKER_01: Like the guy was a machine, dude.
- 47:00SPEAKER_01: Gonna miss, he's gonna do and he's gonna he's gonna make an NFL team very happy.
- 47:04SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm excited to see where he goes, uh, where he's drafted.
- 47:08SPEAKER_01: And like you said, dude, I haven't even thought about that yet.
- 47:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's a he's a free future ring of honor uh member, the best running back we've ever had in school history.
- 47:14SPEAKER_01: And and you'd think at a school like that sec like that wouldn't mean much, but it does.
- 47:18SPEAKER_01: We've had some studs come through the program, like like you just said, Sirach Thompson, obviously DeAndre Washington and other uh other guys down the road.
- 47:25SPEAKER_01: Uh, but man, like you just said, I don't know what I can't add anything further other than I'm gonna miss Taj time.
- 47:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's gonna be a lot to replace, it's gonna be by committee next year.
- 47:35SPEAKER_00: Uh I really like what we saw from Jacoby Williams down the stretch as a true freshman here.
- 47:39SPEAKER_00: Cam Dickey as well, early on.
- 47:40SPEAKER_00: Speedy speedy, that man can run.
- 47:44SPEAKER_00: Big fan, big fan of both those guys.
- 47:47SPEAKER_00: Um, hopefully, you know, with the new OC and stuff, we're all fine and uh happy days and we can get those guys back.
- 47:52SPEAKER_00: But yeah, there's no replacing Josh Brooks.
- 47:54SPEAKER_00: You gotta get a committee together and you gotta hope that uh one of these guys learned a lot from the guy, and uh we're gonna miss him.
- 47:59SPEAKER_00: He rocks, he's one of the best.
- 48:01SPEAKER_01: Absolutely, dude.
- 48:02SPEAKER_01: I can't add anything further than that.
- 48:04SPEAKER_00: Oh man.
- 48:05SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 48:06SPEAKER_00: Well, what do you say?
- 48:08SPEAKER_00: I think that's it.
- 48:09SPEAKER_01: I think that's it.
- 48:10SPEAKER_01: Looking forward to the bowl.
- 48:11SPEAKER_01: Seeing bowl selections around the corner.
- 48:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 48:13SPEAKER_01: Um, and obviously now that football's wrapping up, we'll get more into basketball.
- 48:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely.
- 48:18SPEAKER_00: So I think we have the big AM game coming up here pretty soon for uh for Texas Tech.
- 48:23SPEAKER_00: We do play the mighty DePaul here on okay, yeah.
- 48:28SPEAKER_00: Quick basketball update.
- 48:29SPEAKER_00: We played DePaul in the Big East Challenge on Wednesday, December 4th.
- 48:34SPEAKER_00: Uh I cool.
- 48:36SPEAKER_00: DePaul is uh improved, hopefully.
- 48:39SPEAKER_00: Uh you can't get much worse than what they were last year.
- 48:41SPEAKER_00: Um shout out Elijah Fisher.
- 48:44SPEAKER_00: Um and then Sunday, December 8th, we are playing the Aggies, who are very much down bad right now with their uh it it wasn't really uh throttling, but it felt like it because their offense was just garbage against Texas.
- 49:03SPEAKER_00: I mean AM looked awful.
- 49:06SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, absolutely.
- 49:07SPEAKER_01: Um, wait, are you talking about basketball or football right now?
- 49:10SPEAKER_00: I am, I was talking about basketball, but it just got me thinking about how embarrassed they must be to lose to Texas.
- 49:16SPEAKER_01: I didn't watch a minute of that, dude.
- 49:19SPEAKER_01: Like as soon as I like the a game was over, I was like, I'll just check in real quick.
- 49:22SPEAKER_01: I like out of principle I couldn't watch.
- 49:25SPEAKER_00: I was going in with the mindset that it's funny because one of them's gonna lose.
- 49:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that that is that is funnier.
- 49:30SPEAKER_01: And honestly, honestly, the funnier situation was AM losing, if I'm gonna be honest.
- 49:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, in front of 100,000 at Kyle.
- 49:37SPEAKER_01: Well, just how frustrating it was, you know, you've been in the SEC for 13 years, and then year one, a Big 12 team comes and just smacks you around, you know.
- 49:45SPEAKER_01: That's a big 12 team.
- 49:46SPEAKER_01: I don't want to hear what anyone else is saying.
- 49:48SPEAKER_01: Um, so that that is that is kind of funny.
- 49:51SPEAKER_01: I mean, uh horns down.
- 49:52SPEAKER_01: I want the Aggs to win most times, but it was kind of funny.
- 49:54SPEAKER_00: It was funny, it was gonna be funny regardless.
- 49:57SPEAKER_00: That's how I was gonna look at it, but who cares?
- 49:58SPEAKER_00: Uh, Texas Tech is the true winner of Texas.
- 50:01SPEAKER_00: Uh, I don't care what you say.
- 50:02SPEAKER_00: You can't prove me wrong.
- 50:03SPEAKER_00: Um, okay, let's go.
- 50:05SPEAKER_00: Song of the week to end or off.
- 50:07SPEAKER_01: Song of the week.
- 50:08SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna go with the one I did last week.
- 50:09SPEAKER_01: Oh, I mean the one that's from the lost episode.
- 50:11SPEAKER_00: Lost episode.
- 50:12SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna go with Lord Barry in Texas by Shane Smith and the Saints.
- 50:17SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 50:18SPEAKER_01: So, and it's it's a re-release, it's a redone song of their past, so that's always fun.
- 50:23SPEAKER_01: Um, and I always thought it was a song that didn't get enough credit for by them.
- 50:26SPEAKER_01: And you know me, I love proper nouns, I love songs about Texas and the cities within it.
- 50:32SPEAKER_01: Um, obviously, everybody that listens to this will be able to relate to it because I'm sure most of y'all are Texans and love it.
- 50:36SPEAKER_01: Um, so yeah, Lord Bury Me in Texas, Chain Smith of the Saints.
- 50:40SPEAKER_02: And I hung to the fiddle in the song he played.
- 50:47SPEAKER_00: Lord Bury Me in Texas.
- 50:50SPEAKER_00: You know, I've always said one thing about you, and it's that you love proper nouns.
- 50:54SPEAKER_00: Can't deny it.
- 50:55SPEAKER_01: I'm a proper noun guy, dude.
- 50:57SPEAKER_01: If I as soon as I hear one in the song, I don't care where it is.
- 51:00SPEAKER_01: That's it.
- 51:00SPEAKER_01: Like, I am like, that is a good song.
- 51:02SPEAKER_01: Even if it's a good song, all it is all that needs the proper now.
- 51:06SPEAKER_00: It's a proper now, it's game over.
- 51:08SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, very nice.
- 51:10SPEAKER_00: I will also go with my song of the week from the lost episode last week.
- 51:14SPEAKER_00: Um, this is a band that I found on Instagram, uh, going through my reels.
- 51:19SPEAKER_00: Yes, I know it's late TikTok.
- 51:21SPEAKER_00: Um, but I was going through my reels and I heard their version of Rich Girl.
- 51:25SPEAKER_00: But this band is called Penelope Road.
- 51:27SPEAKER_00: It's a very kind of smooth rock, uh soft rock, like a little jazzy, which is cool, but definitely not country.
- 51:35SPEAKER_00: I would not, you know, put them as country.
- 51:37SPEAKER_00: Uh, I would kind of describe them as a mixture between John Mayer and Marcus King Band, except without the country.
- 51:42SPEAKER_00: Um, so there's my song of the week that I'm gonna choose for them is Mercy by Penelope Road.
- 51:48SPEAKER_02: He's a new man.
- 51:51SPEAKER_02: I shouldn't need it, but I'm desperate.
- 51:56SPEAKER_02: I'm desperate to treat it.
- 52:02SPEAKER_01: Love supporting the little guy, man.
- 52:04SPEAKER_01: That's what the spot's all about.
- 52:05SPEAKER_00: It is just a group of dudes vibing.
- 52:08SPEAKER_00: It's good stuff.
- 52:08SPEAKER_00: Indeed.
- 52:09SPEAKER_00: Alrighty.
- 52:10SPEAKER_00: Well, hey, Texas Tech fans, we just had our best season of football in uh in a long time, and uh maybe some other things happened just now that may have soured some of that.
- 52:21SPEAKER_00: But hey, we're gonna go to a bowl game and potentially win nine games.
- 52:25SPEAKER_01: Hey, Steven, we didn't play the song as we should have after that absolute upwaddling of West Virginia, but I was just gonna I was just gonna say we can finally say country roads take us home right now, okay?
- 52:37SPEAKER_00: John Denver, take me home.
- 52:39SPEAKER_01: He's very proud in heaven right now of his almost.
- 52:42SPEAKER_00: We we love you guys.
- 52:43SPEAKER_00: Thank you for listening.
- 52:44SPEAKER_00: Always Wreck'em Tech.
- 52:45SPEAKER_02: Wreck him tech me home to the place.
