Latest / The Natural Dog Mum / How CBD Works in Dogs (and Why it’s Changing Vet Care) with Emma Delaney from Kindred CBD
Transcript
- 0:00Hey dog mums and dog dags, welcome back to another episode
- 0:03of The Natural Dog Mum. Today we're having a chat with
- 0:08the lovely Emma. She's from a company called
- 0:11Kindred CBD. We're going to be doing a little
- 0:16bit of a deep dive into, well, obviously CBD helping some of
- 0:22the basics, what it is, how it works in the body, what it can
- 0:26be used for. There is a lot of talk online
- 0:30and in the media about CBD for humans as well as animals.
- 0:34I'm sure you've seen and heard it many times, but we thought it
- 0:38would be helpful to give you a little bit more information
- 0:42about how it may help your pet with any number of conditions
- 0:47and how you can go about safely sourcing it in Australia.
- 0:51Because there are rules and regs, as some of you may or may
- 0:54not know. So we're going to be talking
- 0:56about that as well as some of the other natural goodies that
- 1:00Kindred has available for doggies and cats.
- 1:03So stick around. Hey, thanks for coming on.
- 1:09It's so nice to finally meet you.
- 1:11Hi Sarah, thanks so much for having me today.
- 1:13Absolutely. Very, very excited to get into
- 1:17this topic. As as I mentioned, I mean,
- 1:19there's information everywhere. A lot of people talk about it,
- 1:23but I'm sure there are lots and lots of pet parents out there
- 1:27who might be familiar with the time and maybe have a basic
- 1:30understanding but don't quite understand how it works, why
- 1:35it's so beneficial. I mean, most people know that
- 1:37it's good for things like managing pain and those sorts of
- 1:41things, but it can be really, really useful tool in all manner
- 1:46of health conditions, anxiety as well.
- 1:50Yeah, for sure. So it it helps bring the body
- 1:53back to homeostasis or back into a balanced state.
- 1:58And it works on the endocannabinoid system, which is
- 2:01a system found in all mammals and there's receptors all
- 2:05throughout the body. So it has so many different
- 2:08effects, but especially on the nervous system and the immune
- 2:11system as it's found in a lot of those cells.
- 2:15But it works for pain and it works blur for inflammation.
- 2:19So in conditions like arthritis, but also in inflammatory skin
- 2:23conditions, it helps with seizures.
- 2:26In cases of epilepsy also, it works as an anti anxiety and
- 2:35yeah, just for a whole array of different health conditions.
- 2:39Oh, it's. It's absolutely amazing stuff.
- 2:42Now, Kindred is a relatively new brand in Australia, though I
- 2:48understand that you've actually been supplying CBD for a little
- 2:53bit longer than perhaps you've had the supplements in the other
- 2:56products. Is that right?
- 2:57Yeah, that's right. So we launched in March of this
- 3:01year and have been supplying the CBD since earlier at the end.
- 3:06And then we've launched the supplements just last month and
- 3:11then the dog treats in about July and the cat treats are
- 3:15coming this week. So it's, it's been staggered.
- 3:18But yeah, we're we're new to the Australian market.
- 3:21You've had a very busy year. That is a lot.
- 3:24All systems go. Absolutely.
- 3:28So had. How did you come come to be a
- 3:31part of the Kindred team? Yeah.
- 3:33So I started about a year ago, though our parent company is
- 3:38Medi Growth, which is a human medicinal cannabis company.
- 3:42And I was working in the veterinary cannabis space with
- 3:46about a year and a half at that stage.
- 3:49And then Medi Growth decided to set up the veterinary division
- 3:52and I had this really clear vision of what I wanted it to
- 3:56look like, you know, you know, with the whole to be more than
- 3:59veterinary cannabis, but a whole Wellness company.
- 4:02So we also have the treats and the supplements And yeah, we we
- 4:08saw the amazing power of CBD S effects in humans with Medi
- 4:13growth and then just wanted to give that to to pets.
- 4:18So then Kindred was born. Brilliant.
- 4:21And you have a scientific background, don't you?
- 4:23Yeah, so I'm a qualified pharmacist, so qualified in
- 4:28Ireland, was working there for about 7 years in community
- 4:34before moving here to Sydney, and then have been in the
- 4:38veterinary cannabis space now about three years and actually
- 4:43completed a veterinary cannabis guide certificate this year with
- 4:48the global experts who are over in Colorado and Canada.
- 4:51It's Doctor Cassara Andre. Yeah, she's amazing.
- 4:55So yeah, I've been learning, Learning loads.
- 4:59Yeah. Amazing.
- 5:00So talk to us a little bit more. For the uninitiated, CBD in in
- 5:08Australia is not something that you can just log on and purchase
- 5:12from a website or buy over the counter.
- 5:14It's prescription only, yes. Yes, exactly.
- 5:17So the vets can prescribe it as an unlicensed schedule for
- 5:22medication. So legally it has to be
- 5:25prescribed by a vet and then we provide a pathway for vets to do
- 5:31that. So we have a whole clinical
- 5:34portal for vets with prescribing guidelines that's regularly
- 5:38updated as more research comes out.
- 5:41We have a whole research paper library there with over 100
- 5:46papers on the use of medicinal cannabis in various species.
- 5:51And we're going to have case studies and webinars and lots
- 5:55more things to share with vets as as time moves on.
- 5:58And then the vets can submit the prescriptions to us.
- 6:02Our pharmacy then fulfils the scripts and then we get it sent
- 6:05out to the pet parent. And then the pet parents can
- 6:10submit inquiries to us through the website and then we'll get
- 6:14in touch with their vet, invite them to register for the
- 6:17clinical portal, what we call the Vet Hub.
- 6:21And it's free of course, for the vets to register and to access
- 6:24all that information. And we're all about just keeping
- 6:27it simple for the vets and just making it as simple and
- 6:31straightforward for them as. Possible.
- 6:32That's amazing. So it's more than just being
- 6:36able to access the CBD to help their patient.
- 6:40It's it's a full educational system to teach more vets about
- 6:46the benefits and how it works. The clinical studies, all of the
- 6:49evidence is there, meaning that if a pet parent wants to look
- 6:55into it as a potential treatment for their for their animal and
- 7:00their vet is not familiar with CBD or isn't prescribing it,
- 7:04rather than finding another vet, they can actually then refer
- 7:07their vet to you to to receive that education and everything
- 7:12they need to be able to prescribe.
- 7:15Yeah, exactly, exactly. And if the the vet has any
- 7:18questions, you know, I'm prescribing, I'm really happy to
- 7:21help. So three years experience and at
- 7:24this stage and I've seen all the changes and there's been so much
- 7:27research that has even come out in the last three years.
- 7:29So like I recognise it's hard to keep up to date, you know, if
- 7:33you're a very busy vet. A lot of them are very time
- 7:37poor. They've so much on their hands,
- 7:40So what we do is just try to condense down all the research
- 7:44that's out there and just give it to them in a way that's easy
- 7:48for them, just to see the key points and to be able to
- 7:51prescribe in a safe and effective way.
- 7:54Amazing. Now some pet parents out there
- 7:57may have noticed. I know that I have, and I'm not
- 8:00going to name names, but there are some websites out and about
- 8:06that do sell CBD products or what they claim to be CBD.
- 8:13Whether it is or it isn't, it's a little bit hard to tell for
- 8:18people who don't understand about how it works about the
- 8:26importance of prescribing to, in fact get the right dosage for
- 8:31your pet. Why is it important that Pete,
- 8:36that people actually go through their vet and obtain it by
- 8:41prescription rather than just purchasing online?
- 8:44Yeah. So I guess those online
- 8:48products, what we call the black market products, they haven't
- 8:52undergone an inequality assurance testing.
- 8:56So you don't actually know what you're getting.
- 8:58So there could be say high amounts of THC, which which is
- 9:03the part that can make you high. There could be lots of that and
- 9:06there could be low amounts of CBD, which is the the one that's
- 9:10mostly used for therapeutic effects.
- 9:12And then also there can be like residual solvents, if solvents
- 9:18were used in the extraction methods and they're they're
- 9:21toxic to pets. There can even be pesticides and
- 9:25other toxins that are found in the mixture.
- 9:28So you don't really know what you're getting if you're just
- 9:30buying it online. And there can be a lot of
- 9:33misinformation and kind of false advertising around it.
- 9:37And it does make it very difficult for pet owners to, to
- 9:41determine, you know, is that a safe product?
- 9:43Is it not? But the simple way to know is if
- 9:46it's not being prescribed, then then it's not being quality
- 9:50tested. So the safest way is to get
- 9:53something through your vest, umm, that you can stand over and
- 9:58you know, a pharmacist has prepared it so you know exactly
- 10:01what's, what's going into it. You can see a certificate of
- 10:04analysis, you can see the break down of the ingredients so you
- 10:08know it's it's safe for your for your pet.
- 10:10Absolutely. And from what I understand in
- 10:15prescribing CBD for patients, it's a little different to your
- 10:21standard prescription where you're just asking for a
- 10:25particular drug or a particular compound in, in, in milligrammes
- 10:31etcetera. There are there are different
- 10:33strengths that you're actually making up specific to the
- 10:36animals needs. Yes, yeah, exactly.
- 10:39So it's, it's tailored to each pet.
- 10:42So it's a compounded medication. And then the vet will determine
- 10:48the best dose depending on their weight and the severity of the
- 10:51condition and you know, other medications that they might be
- 10:55on. There's lots of factors they'll
- 10:57take into account. Normally they're started on a
- 11:00low dose and then it's increased really slowly over time and that
- 11:05will minimise any side effects. But it's generally really well
- 11:09tolerated anyways. But it comes as an oil
- 11:12formulation and then you'll usually give roundabouts a mil,
- 11:17maybe a bit less, maybe a bit more, usually twice a day.
- 11:20So it's mixed into their food, so it's quite easy to administer
- 11:25and it even comes with different flavourings as well.
- 11:27So for the fussy cats out there or whoever, we can put in a
- 11:33chicken flavouring or a beef flavouring, Yeah, if it's
- 11:37needed. Brilliant.
- 11:38So do you have, do you have any case studies that that spring to
- 11:43mind? I'm I'm interested to hear about
- 11:48specific specific pet stories and what issues they were
- 11:53dealing with and how the CBD was used as part of their their
- 11:57treatment plan and and what the outcomes were.
- 12:00Yeah, one that really sticks out was this old Labrador retriever.
- 12:09His name is Murphy. He was about 12 years old at
- 12:14that stage of his life where he was just really slowing down,
- 12:19sleeping more than usual, not playful.
- 12:22He had arthritis, was in a bit of pain, just that classic
- 12:28geriatric older dog with, you know, a few things going on.
- 12:34CBD was added into his treatment plan.
- 12:40And after a few weeks, the girl who who has his pet owner, she
- 12:46was saying when she came home from work, Murphy would go out
- 12:50to meet her at the car and would jump up in the car and jump up
- 12:54and was all excited to see her. Yeah.
- 12:57And something that she just hadn't experienced for years and
- 13:01something she thought she'd never see, you know, see him do
- 13:04again. And it just brought her so much
- 13:07joy. Yeah.
- 13:08Yeah. It was really special.
- 13:09So we've, and I've heard of a lot of those type of cases, umm,
- 13:14whether it's, you know, they're in pain, umm, our, you know,
- 13:20anxiety cases as well. And the CBD just brings back
- 13:26kind of that sense of vitality and that like playfulness and
- 13:29more interaction, which is really nice to see.
- 13:32And like that obviously affects the pets and is, you know,
- 13:36really improves their quality of life, but also really improves
- 13:40the families, you know, quality of life with their pet as well,
- 13:43which is amazing to see. Absolutely.
- 13:46And I mean, in addition to that, unlike traditional Western
- 13:53medications, you don't have the side effects.
- 13:55You you're not putting additional pressure on the
- 13:58kidneys and the liver to metabolise, you know, toxins in
- 14:03the body. It's, you know, it's something
- 14:07that's tolerated well tends to be pretty gentle on the tummy.
- 14:11You're getting all of the benefits with without without
- 14:14those awful side effects that we all.
- 14:16Dreaded. Yeah.
- 14:17So really well tolerated. The only thing that might be
- 14:20seen, you know, is sometimes sleepiness at the higher doses,
- 14:26but then that can be, you know, reduced back down.
- 14:29Same if there's any GI issues that can be reduced back down,
- 14:33the dose can be reduced back down, you know, as guided by the
- 14:36vet. But in general really well
- 14:39tolerated. It can be used in almost all
- 14:43patients. So it's, it's broken down by the
- 14:45liver. So if there is severe liver
- 14:48disease, it wouldn't be used in that patient.
- 14:51But if there's kidney issues, it's a really good option
- 14:54because it doesn't affect the kidneys at all and can be used
- 14:59with almost any medication, any like traditional pharmaceutical.
- 15:05So really easy to add into traditional pharmaceutical
- 15:10treatment plans. And I've actually seen a lot of
- 15:13times that as the CBD dose is increased over time, the way it
- 15:19normally increases, the pharmaceutical doses can often
- 15:25be reduced, not in every case, but very often.
- 15:30And then, you know, you're avoiding the side effects that
- 15:34may come with the pharmaceuticals.
- 15:36And then sometimes in some cases, the pharmaceuticals can
- 15:40be discontinued and the PET might only need the CBD oil,
- 15:44which is amazing. Absolutely, absolutely fantastic
- 15:49stuff. Now tell us a little bit about
- 15:52the other the other supplements that you have available.
- 15:56Yeah, so we have are still in Calm which is our calming
- 16:01supplement for dogs. So it has magnesium, chamomile
- 16:06and L tryptophan and all the supplements can be used as meal
- 16:10toppers. So they're like in powder form,
- 16:12so it can easily be added to the food.
- 16:15Then we have a joint support flex and move so that one has
- 16:20MSM, glucosamine and green lipped muscle.
- 16:23So really good for the pets joints.
- 16:26That one's available for dogs. And then we have our ease and
- 16:29flow, which is our digestion support available for both cats
- 16:34and dogs with probiotics and prebiotics.
- 16:37And then we also have a fish oil for both cats and for dogs, and
- 16:41that also has added flaxseed oil.
- 16:43So really good for their skin and their coat, really
- 16:46nourishing. And hopefully we're more added
- 16:49to the range then in time to come.
- 16:52Yeah. But these are all designed by
- 16:55vets as well in Australia and all Australian made, yeah.
- 16:59Fantastic, and you've recently moved into treats as well.
- 17:02Treats as well. So we have our dog treats live
- 17:05already and and we have our cat treats coming next week.
- 17:09So really exciting. They're all, yeah, super clean
- 17:15single proteins that have been air dried.
- 17:18So no filler, no preservatives, just really good eating, Yeah.
- 17:27Amazing, that sounds fantastic. And it's a it's a really good
- 17:30starting point as well. If someone has a younger dog or
- 17:34perhaps if they're they're having issues, but maybe the
- 17:37symptoms are a little bit more mild.
- 17:38They don't necessarily need to jump straight to CBD.
- 17:42They can start with these supplements for adding them to
- 17:46their meals and you know, see how they go in.
- 17:50And in many, in many cases, that may be all they need.
- 17:54But if they need perhaps a little bit more support, then
- 18:00you're able to look at the, the options with, with the CBD.
- 18:03You. You really.
- 18:04You've still covered the whole gamut, haven't you?
- 18:06Yeah, that was the aim, yeah. And I guess prevention's better
- 18:12than cures. So, you know, get the
- 18:14supplements in before there's any big issues there.
- 18:19And yeah, just really support the the cats and dogs in
- 18:22whichever way you can. You know, like, sometimes the
- 18:26the supplements are enough and, you know, good nutrition and
- 18:30then sometimes the CBD oil is needed and with or without the
- 18:35traditional pharmaceuticals. But your vet knows best.
- 18:39So yeah. Just out of interest, what
- 18:42motivated you to move from the human side of things to horny
- 18:48pets? I've always loved animals.
- 18:51And then the crossover between that and medicinal cannabis I
- 18:55just found super interesting. And then once I learned and, you
- 19:00know, delved into all the research and went down that
- 19:03rabbit hole, I just found it so, so fascinating.
- 19:08So yeah, I'm really passionate about it now.
- 19:10And just seeing the effects and hearing the effects of pet
- 19:15parents using it in their animals is amazing.
- 19:18I have a few friends that use it in in their pets and just seeing
- 19:22the results first hand is it's really incredible, yeah.
- 19:26Excellent. So for all our pet parents out
- 19:30there listening and watching, what jumps to mind when you
- 19:34think about something that you wish more pet parents knew or
- 19:38knew more about? CBD oil is available because
- 19:43it's real unavailable in Australia.
- 19:47Chat to your vet about it. Have the conversation if they,
- 19:54if they aren't familiar with this, if they haven't prescribed
- 19:57it before, it's not a problem. Just direct them to Kindreds.
- 20:03There's heaps of free resources there for them in the vet hub
- 20:08and we try to break it down and make it really simple and easy
- 20:12for them to be able to prescribe it.
- 20:14And if they've any questions along the way, I'm really happy
- 20:17to help. But it could be.
- 20:19Just it's another tool for for pet parents to have in their, in
- 20:23their toolkit for their for their pets.
- 20:25And it works in a multitude of ways on a multitude of
- 20:29conditions. So just have that in the back of
- 20:32your mind, yeah? Excellent.
- 20:34So for anyone pet parent or wish alike, wanting to find out more
- 20:40or to get in contact, how do they do that?
- 20:43What's your? Website, Yeah.
- 20:44So our website iskindredcbd.com dot AU so the PE, the pet
- 20:53parents can send us through an inquiry, an inquiry form there.
- 20:58We also have the journal which has articles on various health
- 21:04conditions and how CBD can help them.
- 21:06So for example, how CBD can help in the use of seizure
- 21:11management, how it can be used in atopic dermatitis in dogs,
- 21:17how it can be used in cancer cases, how it can be used in
- 21:22osteoarthritis, how it can be helpful in palliative care.
- 21:26So there's heaps of information there.
- 21:30That's all science fact and the research papers are referenced,
- 21:34but it's just there in a, in an easy to digest sort of a way.
- 21:40So it's a good place for pet parents to start to learn about
- 21:45CBD. And then for vets, we have the
- 21:48vet hub so it's free for them to register and again, loads of
- 21:53resources there for them to learn about CBD prescribing.
- 21:56Excellent, very, very, very exciting stuff.
- 22:00That's definitely, definitely something I'll be keeping in my
- 22:03back pocket if if ever I I need it for one of my babies.
- 22:09Kindredcbd.com dot AU if you need to find out more.
- 22:15Thank you Sean Mark for coming on and and chatting with us.
- 22:19Yeah, love to do a do it again in the new year when we're back
- 22:23from break. Yeah, sounds awesome.
- 22:25Thanks so much, Harry.
