- 0:00Speaker 1: Right, Welcome to the Yukon football coaches showed Jim Morrow
- 0:03Speaker 1: with us Usky's go to five and three with a
- 0:04Speaker 1: win against Rice on the weekend, a hard fought seventeen
- 0:08Speaker 1: to ten victory and even included a kickoff return. We're
- 0:13Speaker 1: going to get to that. That was maybe the most
- 0:15Speaker 1: exciting play of the game. But I think from the
- 0:17Speaker 1: Yukon perspective, Jim, winning a football game when you're not
- 0:21Speaker 1: at your best on one side of the football at
- 0:24Speaker 1: foot offense, winning it with defense that's something that is special,
- 0:30Speaker 1: and you know you're trying to win. It doesn't matter
- 0:33Speaker 1: how you do it. But when your a defensive unit
- 0:36Speaker 1: kind of stood up, I thought on the weekend and said,
- 0:39Speaker 1: I don't care if we scored three or six points,
- 0:42Speaker 1: We're winning this game. Somehow. That had to be gratifying
- 0:46Speaker 1: to you and the staff.
- 0:47Speaker 2: It was, and it's great for the players too. You know,
- 0:51Speaker 2: nobody's happy with the way we played early in the
- 0:54Speaker 2: game on offense, and it's being addressed and it's you know,
- 0:58Speaker 2: we're making the adjustments necessy area to get off through
- 1:01Speaker 2: a better start. However, we all know than in competitive athletics,
- 1:06Speaker 2: there's going to be games where you struggle, or one
- 1:10Speaker 2: aspect of your game struggles, and at those times, you know,
- 1:13Speaker 2: what good teams do is the other, the other side
- 1:16Speaker 2: of the ball or the other phase of the of
- 1:18Speaker 2: the team, picks it up a little bit and keeps
- 1:21Speaker 2: you in it. And that's what we were able to
- 1:23Speaker 2: do on defense, is keep our team in it until
- 1:27Speaker 2: our offense could get rolling, which they did. And the
- 1:31Speaker 2: great thing, Mike, is that there was never any finger pointing,
- 1:34Speaker 2: you know, it was all it was. It was just
- 1:36Speaker 2: great energy, and you know, we held up. We held up,
- 1:40Speaker 2: we held up on defense, we gave our offense opportunities
- 1:43Speaker 2: and then finally, you know, we made the play that
- 1:46Speaker 2: got us the lead. And from there I think we
- 1:48Speaker 2: all maybe exhaled a little bit, but we didn't let
- 1:51Speaker 2: down at all. It gave us Actually, you know, you
- 1:54Speaker 2: say exhaled because you're a little uptight, but it gave
- 1:56Speaker 2: everyone a boost. Yeah.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Winning course is the bottom line of all of it.
- 2:02Speaker 1: And doing it at home where the Huskies are five
- 2:04Speaker 1: and one this year is always good news. I'm getting
- 2:07Speaker 1: the sense from the fan base, and I talked to
- 2:09Speaker 1: a lot of folks at different venues, different places I
- 2:12Speaker 1: go to they're following the team when they're not in
- 2:15Speaker 1: the building, which I always think is cool because if
- 2:19Speaker 1: you got people following what you're doing from somewhere, Like
- 2:22Speaker 1: a friend of mine went to New York City a
- 2:24Speaker 1: birthday party. There is at a party bus. He's watching
- 2:27Speaker 1: the game on his phone. Another guy's in another part
- 2:30Speaker 1: of the New England somewhere else, he's following the football team.
- 2:33Speaker 1: I think that's a good sign because it says that
- 2:35Speaker 1: people care. They want to know what's happening with this team,
- 2:39Speaker 1: they want to see what's happening as it's happening. I
- 2:42Speaker 1: think that's an important important step for this program.
- 2:46Speaker 2: It absolutely is, and it shows the passion of this
- 2:50Speaker 2: fan base. Look, we all know that you know, at
- 2:53Speaker 2: this point in time, this is this is considered a
- 2:55Speaker 2: basketball school, and rightly so. I mean, the things that
- 2:59Speaker 2: have been a comp pushed on those on that court
- 3:03Speaker 2: are you know, truly amazing. And yet if you're a
- 3:07Speaker 2: Yukon fan, you cheer for Yukon and you cheer for
- 3:10Speaker 2: Yukon sports, whether it's you know, basketball, football, or any
- 3:13Speaker 2: other sport. And uh, you know, we feel that we'd
- 3:17Speaker 2: certainly like those people that are following on their phones
- 3:20Speaker 2: to be in the stands. But we also recognize the
- 3:22Speaker 2: fact that not everyone can be at the game on Saturday.
- 3:25Speaker 2: So the fact that they even care enough to to
- 3:29Speaker 2: you know, follow it on online, even watch it, or
- 3:33Speaker 2: just follow the score, you know, or even check in
- 3:35Speaker 2: on scores. I mean, that's that's pretty awesome. You know,
- 3:38Speaker 2: at least it's a step in the right direction for us,
- 3:41Speaker 2: and we just got to keep cultivating that. And it
- 3:44Speaker 2: takes time, and I've said it a lot of times.
- 3:47Speaker 2: We have to build up trust and we're working hard
- 3:50Speaker 2: to do that. But we know, we know, if you're
- 3:53Speaker 2: a Yukon fan of one sport, you're a Yukon fan period.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Yeah, there's no doubt. I mean, folks that follow the
- 4:01Speaker 1: Huskies follow the Huskies. I don't care what sport it is.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Some of the stats that defense of Yukon's put up
- 4:10Speaker 1: on the weekend were just astounding to me. This one
- 4:15Speaker 1: blows my mind. Rice the average third down that they
- 4:19Speaker 1: had to make was nine point four yards. I mean,
- 4:23Speaker 1: that tells you that the defense Matt Brock was pushing
- 4:27Speaker 1: some buttons because they had Rice on their heels and
- 4:31Speaker 1: having to make a lot of third and longs.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Well, when you can get a team in a third
- 4:36Speaker 2: and long, your success rate on third down certainly goes up.
- 4:39Speaker 2: And we were able to get that done on Saturday.
- 4:43Speaker 2: It's important that it continues. You know, every week becomes
- 4:46Speaker 2: more and more important to you know, our ability to
- 4:49Speaker 2: reach our goals. But we need our players to keep
- 4:54Speaker 2: responding the way they responded Saturday and even do more,
- 4:58Speaker 2: and we'll keep demanding more of them becau because you know,
- 5:01Speaker 2: we look at stats and we acknowledge them and we
- 5:05Speaker 2: analyze them. But at the end of the day, you
- 5:08Speaker 2: look at the film and you say, Okay, are guys
- 5:10Speaker 2: doing what they're supposed to do, are they doing it consistently?
- 5:14Speaker 2: And are they playing with great effort? But you know,
- 5:16Speaker 2: you're always talking about effort, and I was impressed with
- 5:19Speaker 2: their effort on Saturday. We still are not near where
- 5:24Speaker 2: we can be as a defense if we are more
- 5:28Speaker 2: consistent in the execution of our job playing and play out,
- 5:33Speaker 2: and so that's another thing that we're striving for.
- 5:36Speaker 1: You know, I'm an old school guy, a Giants fan.
- 5:40Speaker 1: I thought I was watching some Giant defense because the
- 5:44Speaker 1: guys in the defensive line and a linebacking crew batted
- 5:48Speaker 1: down eleven balls in that game against Rice. To me,
- 5:52Speaker 1: that's almost more exciting than sacking the quarterback, isn't it.
- 5:57Speaker 2: No, No, we like those sacks. We like to take
- 6:02Speaker 2: the yards away. But I'll tell you what it's it's
- 6:06Speaker 2: a good thing, right. It shows that they're learning how
- 6:09Speaker 2: to time when they get their hands up, they have
- 6:11Speaker 2: an understanding of passing lanes. And then the plays down
- 6:15Speaker 2: the field by the linebackers and defensive backs started, you know,
- 6:18Speaker 2: very I think the second play of the game, Jane
- 6:20Speaker 2: McDonald knocks the ball down and it kind of continued
- 6:23Speaker 2: that way. I think the next step for us now
- 6:25Speaker 2: is to, you know, instead of knocking it down, we
- 6:28Speaker 2: got to start catching some We got to start getting
- 6:30Speaker 2: some interceptions. We got to start causing some fumbles and
- 6:32Speaker 2: getting some takeaways and helping our offense when they're having
- 6:35Speaker 2: a tough day, you know, get better field positioned. So
- 6:39Speaker 2: you know, that's always an emphasis point, but it's secondary
- 6:43Speaker 2: to do in your job and executing on a consistent basis.
- 6:45Speaker 2: And if you do that, if you do your job
- 6:47Speaker 2: and you execute an consistent basis, then eventually you're gonna
- 6:50Speaker 2: make those turnovers that you need to make.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Yeah you cut right now. Second in the country in
- 6:56Speaker 1: third down percentage conversion rates about the opposition, just over
- 7:00Speaker 1: twenty five percent, So that is impressive one of the
- 7:03Speaker 1: numbers that I think matter when you talk about Yukon football.
- 7:06Speaker 1: We'll be back with Jim Moore just a second as
- 7:09Speaker 1: we continue on the Yukon Football Coaches Show.
