- 0:00Hey everyone-welcome back to The Science of Leading.
- 0:02I'm Claire Monroe, and yep, Edwin Carrington's here too-our resident
- 0:06voice of reason.
- 0:06Edwin, today we're talking about something that's...
- 0:09honestly kind of exciting but also kinda nerve-wracking for a lot of
- 0:13hiring managers: AI in hiring.
- 0:13Good to be here,
- 0:17Claire.
- 0:18And you're right-there's a lot of energy around it,
- 0:21but also a lot of unease.
- 0:22I keep hearing this quiet fear: "If we bring AI into hiring...
- 0:27are we losing something human in the process?" That word comes up a
- 0:27lot-dehumanization.
- 0:27Totally.
- 0:35And it's not just paranoia.
- 0:37I saw a stat recently-something like 40% of HR leaders say they don't
- 0:41even really get how AI works.
- 0:43And the ones who do understand it?
- 0:45They're still worried.
- 0:46Like-what if the system filters out the good candidates just because
- 0:50they don't check the "right" boxes on paper?
- 0:53Suddenly it's like... humans become data points.
- 0:53And unfortunately,
- 0:58that's not an imaginary risk.
- 1:00Machines can process faster than any of us.
- 1:03AI tools can auto-screen resumes,
- 1:05schedule interviews, even score responses.
- 1:08But I remember this case-early 2000s maybe-a big firm rolled out an algorithm
- 1:14to predict "culture fit." One incredible candidate with a really non-traditional
- 1:19background got flagged as a mismatch and dropped.
- 1:21But the hiring manager actually stepped in,
- 1:24reviewed it personally-and guess what?
- 1:27That person ended up being one of the best hires they made that year.
- 1:27That
- 1:31gives me chills.
- 1:32It's like... AI almost blocked someone who should have made it through.
- 1:36And it reminds me of what platforms like CodeSignal are doing now-where
- 1:39they use AI to test people on the actual work,
- 1:42not just surface stuff like keywords or formatting.
- 1:45But even then, it's not just about the scores.
- 1:47Someone still needs to interpret the results,
- 1:50adjust for context, catch the edge cases.
- 1:50Exactly.
- 1:54AI works best as a partner-not a gatekeeper.
- 1:58Let it filter, sort, highlight-but don't let it decide alone.
- 2:02If your algorithm is trained on flawed or outdated data,
- 2:06you're just scaling old bias.
- 2:08The real value is when AI does the heavy lifting,
- 2:11and humans still shape the final call with critical thinking.
- 2:11That's the
- 2:16part a lot of people skip.
- 2:17They think: "Cool, the machine will find me the top three." But the top
- 2:21three based on what?
- 2:22Because honestly, efficiency is great-but if you miss the person behind
- 2:25the data, what's the point?
- 2:25Exactly.
- 2:28You want fast?
- 2:30Use AI.
- 2:32You want trust, alignment, culture fit-that still takes people.
- 2:37The best HR leaders I've seen all do one thing: they automate the admin,
- 2:42and protect the relationship.
- 2:44Screening, scheduling, email templates?
- 2:47Sure, give it to tech.
- 2:49But the moment someone hits the shortlist?
- 2:51That's when a human steps in.
- 2:51And even a tiny human moment goes so far.
- 2:57I saw this company where recruiters sent quick video messages-just 20
- 3:01seconds-thanking candidates personally.
- 3:03Or offered virtual coffee chats with the team.
- 3:06Some even gave thoughtful feedback to people they didn't hire.
- 3:09Like-how rare is that?
- 3:10But man, it makes people feel seen.
- 3:10It does.
- 3:14I worked with a company that mapped the whole candidate journey and built
- 3:18in these "human checkpoints." Even though most of the logistics were automated,
- 3:23they always had a person jump in at key points-welcome calls,
- 3:26real-time updates, short feedback huddles.
- 3:29Their candidate ratings?
- 3:31Off the charts.
- 3:31And meanwhile, you still hear candidates say the same
- 3:35thing: "I felt like a number." That black-hole vibe-send your application
- 3:40in, never hear back, just...
- 3:41vanish into the system.
- 3:43So if we're serious about fixing that,
- 3:45Edwin-where do we start inserting those human touchpoints?
- 3:45Start by anchoring
- 3:51them at the most emotional moments.
- 3:52First outreach-make it real.
- 3:55After an assessment-share thoughts,
- 3:58not just scores.
- 3:59Before an offer-bring in the team.
- 4:02Even if AI sets the rhythm, the melody has to be human.
- 4:06And when you invite someone to a conversation,
- 4:08that invite should come from someone who means it.
- 4:08Ugh,
- 4:12yes.
- 4:12One panel I listened to had this great line: "Technology should scale
- 4:17intention, not just output." So like-use the data,
- 4:20but still show candidates they're more than a set of metrics.
- 4:23Mention their project.
- 4:24Reference something unique.
- 4:26Even offer up resources-like interview prep or skill tips-before they
- 4:30ask.
- 4:30It's those thoughtful signals that shift perception.
- 4:34You're not just a company using tech-you're a company that cares.
- 4:39And when you use AI the right way,
- 4:41it's not just about faster hiring.
- 4:43It's about better hiring.
- 4:45Smarter, fairer, more intentional.
- 4:45Okay,
- 4:49let's zoom out.
- 4:50If we've automated the boring stuff,
- 4:52and we've protected the human stuff... what's the next level?
- 4:55Like-how do leaders use AI strategically,
- 4:57beyond just saving time?
- 4:57Think of AI as an early-warning system for your
- 5:01hiring process.
- 5:02It can highlight where people are dropping off,
- 5:05where bottlenecks are forming,
- 5:07even where certain criteria might be unintentionally weeding out diverse
- 5:11talent.
- 5:11Some companies are using it to forecast talent needs based on upcoming
- 5:16market shifts.
- 5:17One study from McKinsey showed firms using AI like this boosted their
- 5:22hiring efficiency by 80%.
- 5:24That's not just time-they gained agility.
- 5:24Wow.
- 5:28And yeah-I've seen recruiters using AI to surface candidates from totally
- 5:32different industries or backgrounds.
- 5:33People they never would've considered with a manual search.
- 5:36But that means the recruiter's job is changing too,
- 5:39right?
- 5:39They're not just pushing paper anymore.
- 5:41They're... kind of like brand ambassadors now.
- 5:41Exactly.
- 5:45They're representing culture.
- 5:47Values.
- 5:49Purpose.
- 5:50I worked with a team where AI ranked one candidate highest-but the recruiter
- 5:55noticed a few small things in conversation,
- 5:58emotional cues, alignment with the team vibe-and advocated for someone
- 6:03else.
- 6:03That person ended up thriving in the role.
- 6:06So, yes-trust the data.
- 6:08But listen for the story between the lines.
- 6:08That's the magic,
- 6:12right?
- 6:13AI gives you the map-but humans decide the journey.
- 6:16And when you get it right?
- 6:18You don't just hire faster-you hire better.
- 6:18Beautifully said.
- 6:21And if anyone listening is wondering,
- 6:24"Okay-but how do we do this?"-you can test OAD's behavioral tools for
- 6:29free at O-A-D dot A-I.
- 6:31It's a great way to build smarter hiring processes and protect the human
- 6:35element.
- 6:35Definitely worth a look.
- 6:38And thanks again for all your wisdom,
- 6:39Edwin.
- 6:40I always leave these chats with like...
- 6:42five new ideas and a better mood.
- 6:42Likewise,
- 6:45Claire.
- 6:46And thanks to everyone listening-we'll see you next time on The Science
- 6:49of Leading.
- 6:49Bye everyone-take care!
