- 2:45Speaker 1: have to have this on animals attack on Thursday, and
- 2:51Speaker 1: I haven't responded. I don't have to, it's my show,
- 2:55Speaker 1: but I probably will having read this story. And by
- 3:00Speaker 1: the way, you can always send me animal attack stories
- 3:04Speaker 1: people do all the time. I don't see all of them.
- 3:07Speaker 1: I mean I don't see all the animal attack stories.
- 3:09Speaker 1: So when you send me some, I like that. So
- 3:13Speaker 1: chances are I haven't seen that yet. Now sometimes I have,
- 3:17Speaker 1: but sometimes I haven't. So keep those animal attack stories coming.
- 3:22Speaker 1: I hear from millions of you every week that that
- 3:25Speaker 1: may be your favorite segment of the week. I don't
- 3:28Speaker 1: know what it says about my show on a general basis,
- 3:32Speaker 1: but I know it's a very popular segment, and so
- 3:36Speaker 1: we will continue to do it. Let's do this. We're
- 3:41Speaker 1: going to visit with Paul Myers coming up, but before that,
- 3:44Speaker 1: we're going to hear a little bit from defensive coordinator
- 3:47Speaker 1: Jay Bateman yesterday.
- 3:49Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I think going in we felt pretty
- 3:51Speaker 5: good about the inside kids. I think the multiplicity of
- 3:55Speaker 5: what we are able to.
- 3:56Speaker 6: Do with our defensive ends has been really good, and
- 3:59Speaker 6: it's been differ from what we've done in the past,
- 4:01Speaker 6: and we are we're playing with a little bit more
- 4:02Speaker 6: with We're playing with a little bit more edge, and
- 4:05Speaker 6: I think it's kind of limited some of the runs
- 4:06Speaker 6: we've seen.
- 4:08Speaker 5: But I think obviously that cash has been tremendous.
- 4:10Speaker 6: I think Marco Jones and Roland behind him, you know,
- 4:12Speaker 6: are really coming along.
- 4:13Speaker 5: And then I think T J. Search has really helped
- 4:15Speaker 5: us day on, has helped us a.
- 4:16Speaker 6: Lot, like to the to the field, like with a
- 4:19Speaker 6: little bit bigger body, but able to play on the
- 4:21Speaker 6: edge more.
- 4:21Speaker 5: And I think they come off the rock, they knock
- 4:25Speaker 5: people back. They've done a pretty good They've done a
- 4:26Speaker 5: good job.
- 4:27Speaker 7: And then y'all had some bettering guys they all knew
- 4:29Speaker 7: were capable of doing good things.
- 4:30Speaker 8: But I'm just curious maybe one or two guys that
- 4:33Speaker 8: have improved the most through the season that have stepped
- 4:35Speaker 8: up in big roles for y'all.
- 4:36Speaker 6: I mean, I think I think Marco Jones just continues
- 4:38Speaker 6: to like really impress, you know. And I mean just
- 4:42Speaker 6: a really talented kid, really smart, smart young man, you know,
- 4:46Speaker 6: understands football makes sense to him. We do a lot
- 4:48Speaker 6: with him. I think I think his future is really bright.
- 4:50Speaker 6: I think the land and rink's really come along the
- 4:52Speaker 6: last couple of weeks. I think he played really really
- 4:54Speaker 6: good against LSU when he got in there at the end,
- 4:56Speaker 6: we're able to rotate him in more. Uh So, I
- 4:59Speaker 6: think I think all those young d linemen and I
- 5:01Speaker 6: think we feel really good about that class.
- 5:02Speaker 5: We signed coach to the right third road, David Jay.
- 5:07Speaker 9: Was this game personal for the defense considering what happened
- 5:10Speaker 9: in the Arkansas game and then also like the history
- 5:12Speaker 9: with LSU because you look at Cash's body language does
- 5:15Speaker 9: and it just seemed like they always wanted but there
- 5:18Speaker 9: seemed like to be amped up a little bit more.
- 5:19Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, I think I think we were really
- 5:20Speaker 6: disappointed with how he played in Arkansas. I was just
- 5:23Speaker 6: disappointed how he coached at Arkansas, you know.
- 5:24Speaker 5: So I think, I.
- 5:27Speaker 6: Mean, look, we talked to him all week about when
- 5:30Speaker 6: you go into when you go play at LSU, you know,
- 5:33Speaker 6: kind of like the r of that place and like
- 5:36Speaker 6: going in there and play at night. And I think
- 5:38Speaker 6: they I think they were ready for the challenge for sure.
- 5:40Speaker 6: And I think, uh yeah, I knew Friday night, Man,
- 5:43Speaker 6: Friday night, we had our meeting and we talked about stuff,
- 5:45Speaker 6: and I was pretty confident Friday night we were gonna
- 5:47Speaker 6: we're gonna play a really high level and I thought.
- 5:49Speaker 5: We did to the left front road Tony coach.
- 5:53Speaker 10: Obviously, we asked alcohoed this earlier and he said it
- 5:56Speaker 10: was on first and second down that earned this opportunity.
- 5:58Speaker 10: But you guys are number two in the nation on
- 5:59Speaker 10: third downs? What is it about this group that allows
- 6:02Speaker 10: you guys to thrive so much on that money down?
- 6:06Speaker 6: I think we have done a really nice job, but
- 6:08Speaker 6: we've gotten a lot of third and longs which make
- 6:10Speaker 6: it easier.
- 6:10Speaker 5: Okay.
- 6:12Speaker 6: I think we spend a lot of time on it.
- 6:13Speaker 6: I think our kids embrace kind of what we're trying
- 6:16Speaker 6: to do. You know, I tell people that, I mean
- 6:18Speaker 6: Cash is how I don't know where he is in
- 6:20Speaker 6: the nation, but you know he's got a bunch of sacks.
- 6:22Speaker 6: And uh, I mean, we stopped Florida on the fourth
- 6:24Speaker 6: and sixth and he's dropping out in coverage and playing
- 6:26Speaker 6: two man on our receivers. So I think there's a
- 6:28Speaker 6: lot of like, hey, you know, if I do my job,
- 6:31Speaker 6: we're gonna get home.
- 6:32Speaker 5: We're gonna get off the field.
- 6:33Speaker 6: We ask people to do a lot of different things,
- 6:35Speaker 6: and we've got kids a lot with a pretty wide
- 6:37Speaker 6: skill set, and uh so I think they I think that,
- 6:40Speaker 6: you know, I think they enjoy it.
- 6:41Speaker 5: I think they embrace.
- 6:43Speaker 6: Kind of the challenge for give them each week schematically,
- 6:46Speaker 6: you know, different things. And you know, I think we've
- 6:50Speaker 6: got in good positions and then we've done a really
- 6:51Speaker 6: nice job and we've got in those situations, and I
- 6:53Speaker 6: think there's more to come to coach.
- 6:55Speaker 11: We'll go to the right second row.
- 6:57Speaker 5: Mark, Hey, appreciate the Redskins T shirt. There you go,
- 7:03Speaker 5: my silent protest.
- 7:06Speaker 12: But he started the season having Torian and Scooby is
- 7:09Speaker 12: your starters. Then obviously Damian Sanford comes on. But this
- 7:13Speaker 12: weekend you had Noah Michale out there. Jordan Lockhart had
- 7:17Speaker 12: a sack. You talk a little bit about that linebacker
- 7:20Speaker 12: unit as a whole, in the depth that you've been
- 7:21Speaker 12: able to develop.
- 7:22Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, I think the hardest part at linebacker
- 7:24Speaker 6: now is just not a reps to go around. But
- 7:27Speaker 6: you Noah jumped in. I mean, look the first play,
- 7:29Speaker 6: the second player, I guess Noah was in the game.
- 7:31Speaker 6: He had a TfL. I thought Noah played really well,
- 7:34Speaker 6: you know, Jordan. I think it's gonna be a really
- 7:35Speaker 6: good player. Is a really good player. You know. Jordan's
- 7:37Speaker 6: just behind a guy who's a really, really valuable piece
- 7:39Speaker 6: of our defense right now.
- 7:42Speaker 5: So it was good to see Scooby back.
- 7:44Speaker 6: I felt like that was the closest he's been to healthy,
- 7:47Speaker 6: really since Notre Dame.
- 7:48Speaker 5: Game felt that way during the week. I thought you
- 7:49Speaker 5: played really well.
- 7:51Speaker 6: And I've said this before you I mean, I think,
- 7:52Speaker 6: I don't know if I've been more proud of a
- 7:54Speaker 6: kid than I am of Damien. What you know, way
- 7:55Speaker 6: he's produced. So I think, you know, it's a good
- 7:58Speaker 6: group of kids. I enjoy those guys every day. It's
- 8:01Speaker 6: really fortunate to coach those kids.
- 8:03Speaker 13: Coach all the way in the back Donna coach Cash
- 8:07Speaker 13: is a lead to the SEC in Sex and he's
- 8:09Speaker 13: third nationally. Just can you talk about his development over
- 8:13Speaker 13: the last year and a half.
- 8:14Speaker 14: I know earlier this season, Elco talked about the way
- 8:16Speaker 14: that he prepared for his senior year is about as
- 8:19Speaker 14: good as he's seen anybody.
- 8:21Speaker 5: Yeah, man, I love that kid.
- 8:24Speaker 6: He's so unselfish, he's such a practice, is so hard,
- 8:28Speaker 6: he's really smart. Yeah, I love that kid. I think
- 8:31Speaker 6: I think he is everything you want in a football player.
- 8:34Speaker 6: And I think, you know, a lot of our young
- 8:37Speaker 6: kids look up to him, you know, because of kind
- 8:39Speaker 6: of you know, how he got here and and the
- 8:41Speaker 6: and the level he plays at right now.
- 8:42Speaker 5: But I think it's a testament to a young man.
- 8:44Speaker 6: Who's got a lot of ability, who decided to go
- 8:47Speaker 6: to work and and he's reaping the rewards right now.
- 8:50Speaker 6: And yeah, I mean I think, I mean, I love
- 8:53Speaker 6: that kid.
- 8:53Speaker 5: I think he's a tremendous player, a tremendous kid. Avery.
- 8:55Speaker 5: I love going out to practice with that kid every day.
- 8:58Speaker 11: We'll stay all the way in the back.
- 8:59Speaker 15: Tyler, it seemed, you know, after kind of a rough
- 9:02Speaker 15: patch there in the second quarter against else, you something
- 9:05Speaker 15: clicked and and you know, defense kind of played, you know,
- 9:08Speaker 15: locked down the rest of the way. And it seems
- 9:09Speaker 15: like there's been those moments this year where there's mid game,
- 9:14Speaker 15: you know, something picks and the lockdown defense comes.
- 9:18Speaker 5: What what do you attribute that to? That kind of switch?
- 9:21Speaker 6: Yeah, I think I think you know, they have good
- 9:23Speaker 6: coaches too, right, so they find a way to attack
- 9:25Speaker 6: us a little bit and we have to counter. I
- 9:27Speaker 6: think sometimes our kids get settled down into kind of
- 9:29Speaker 6: the flow of the game. You know, I thought against LSU,
- 9:32Speaker 6: you know, we missed them tackles, you know, I think,
- 9:34Speaker 6: you know, I think that we shouldn't miss you know,
- 9:37Speaker 6: like not like we missed. So I think that was
- 9:39Speaker 6: part of it. And I think at halftime we came
- 9:41Speaker 6: in there and kind of settled down and kind of
- 9:43Speaker 6: settled on how we're going to cut you know, the
- 9:45Speaker 6: run structure we're gonna play. And I think once we
- 9:47Speaker 6: once we kind of got setted rid of that, you
- 9:49Speaker 6: know that they were having a hard time on the
- 9:50Speaker 6: first second out of blocking us and dropped back past.
- 9:53Speaker 6: So once we kind of settled down and how we're
- 9:55Speaker 6: going to defend the run and still give ourselves a
- 9:56Speaker 6: chance to rush the pass or I felt.
- 9:58Speaker 5: Like it kind of locked in pretty good for us.
- 10:01Speaker 5: But y'all agree with you.
- 10:02Speaker 6: I mean, I think our kids, I feel like the
- 10:04Speaker 6: focus and the like communication during the game this year,
- 10:11Speaker 6: really after the first game or two has really been
- 10:14Speaker 6: at a high level. And I think I think our folks,
- 10:16Speaker 6: like our ability to kind of dial in on what's
- 10:18Speaker 6: happening right now has been a message we've been trying
- 10:22Speaker 6: to drive home and I feel like we've got some
- 10:23Speaker 6: veteran kids that have experienced now at some key spots
- 10:27Speaker 6: and key communication spots, and.
- 10:29Speaker 5: I think those things are helping us. We'll come to
- 10:31Speaker 5: the right front road.
- 10:32Speaker 13: Carter, it's talking about cash is how when did you
- 10:37Speaker 13: think this kind of season was possible for him? And
- 10:41Speaker 13: maybe what has impressed you the most from what you've
- 10:42Speaker 13: seen from.
- 10:43Speaker 6: Him, you know, I mean I felt like last year
- 10:46Speaker 6: he was one of the better players in our in
- 10:49Speaker 6: our conference, and which is the best conference in college football, right, So,
- 10:55Speaker 6: I mean I kind of felt like, you know, once
- 10:57Speaker 6: we kind of settled in with how we're going to
- 10:58Speaker 6: use them on third downs, and then I think we've
- 11:01Speaker 6: made some schematic changes to allow him to kind of
- 11:04Speaker 6: rush more, which which I'm a big fan of, and
- 11:07Speaker 6: I think it's really helped him and helped us. You know,
- 11:11Speaker 6: I think he's a really talented kid, and I think
- 11:14Speaker 6: he works really hard at it. And so when you're
- 11:16Speaker 6: really talented, you work really hard at something and then
- 11:18Speaker 6: it kind of clicks and what you're seeing, that's what
- 11:21Speaker 6: you're seeing.
- 11:21Speaker 5: And I mean, I feel like I've always had a
- 11:23Speaker 5: lot of faith in that kid. To be honest with you.
- 11:26Speaker 13: Did you see the video of him kind of losing
- 11:29Speaker 13: his mind during.
- 11:30Speaker 6: The Yeah, first of all, I absolutely saw it. I
- 11:33Speaker 6: absolutely love it.
- 11:34Speaker 5: He wasn't losing his mind.
- 11:35Speaker 6: Look, this is a this is a competitive environment, brother,
- 11:38Speaker 6: you know what I mean.
- 11:38Speaker 5: So, like.
- 11:40Speaker 6: There's a certain edge you have to play with, and
- 11:43Speaker 6: I think he plays with it. And uh, you know,
- 11:46Speaker 6: we've talked about some of some things, but like if
- 11:49Speaker 6: you're going to play defensive ball in the SEC at
- 11:51Speaker 6: a really high level, man, you've got to play with
- 11:53Speaker 6: a certain level of.
- 11:54Speaker 5: Attitude and edge and I think Cash just has that. Yeah,
- 11:57Speaker 5: I love that, dude. We'll go to the last third row.
- 12:00Speaker 14: Matthew coach.
- 12:01Speaker 16: You talked about communication and the defense.
- 12:03Speaker 8: How important is having such an intelligent linebacker like Tori
- 12:06Speaker 8: and York been.
- 12:08Speaker 6: Uh yeah, I don't mean, I don't I don't know
- 12:11Speaker 6: a scale, but whatever the scale you would use.
- 12:14Speaker 5: It's extremely high. Yeah. He's really bright. I mean there
- 12:16Speaker 5: we're we are able to do things. And look, you know,
- 12:19Speaker 5: I think the job issues done with our safeties.
- 12:21Speaker 6: I think Mark's Radcliffe, Dalton Brooks have come have gone
- 12:25Speaker 6: come so far by our ability to rely on them
- 12:27Speaker 6: to communicate too.
- 12:29Speaker 5: But uh, but yeah, I think Torrian, it's so important
- 12:34Speaker 5: to him.
- 12:35Speaker 6: Uh he has such a high level of expectations for himself.
- 12:40Speaker 5: He worked so hard at it, and uh yeah, I mean,
- 12:43Speaker 5: I he.
- 12:45Speaker 6: The the ability to communicate with a kid on the field,
- 12:48Speaker 6: and I feel like y'all might want to ask him this.
- 12:51Speaker 6: I feel like now that I'm on the sideline with him,
- 12:52Speaker 6: and our ability to visually communicate while I'm talking to him.
- 12:55Speaker 6: I just I just there's a sense of calm that
- 12:58Speaker 6: he provides the defense, and I think is is hard, big,
- 13:00Speaker 6: hard to.
- 13:00Speaker 5: Measure front right first row Travis hey Ja.
- 13:04Speaker 8: I know the concept of halftime adjustments can be a
- 13:07Speaker 8: little cliche, but it does seem like the teams have
- 13:09Speaker 8: been the defense has been especially good in the second half.
- 13:12Speaker 8: How much has that time do you feel like been
- 13:14Speaker 8: key to making the adjustments, making the change.
- 13:18Speaker 6: Yeah, there's I mean, look, every game is a little different, right,
- 13:22Speaker 6: but there have been some games where it's been like, hey,
- 13:24Speaker 6: look we need to do this, we need to do
- 13:25Speaker 6: that more. I think more of the time it's been
- 13:27Speaker 6: like we we've kind of gone in with a game
- 13:28Speaker 6: plan of you know, we've got four or five different ways,
- 13:31Speaker 6: you know, we're anticipating them attacking us, and then you
- 13:34Speaker 6: kind of get into second quarter rounds, Okay, this is
- 13:36Speaker 6: what they're trying to do, this is the the schematic
- 13:40Speaker 6: answer we thought we had going in, This is what
- 13:43Speaker 6: we're gonna do.
- 13:44Speaker 5: Are we good with this?
- 13:46Speaker 6: And then they kind of get in line with it,
- 13:47Speaker 6: and then it works out pretty good for us. We
- 13:49Speaker 6: have good players, so and we have really like smart,
- 13:53Speaker 6: tough players, and so when we get them in the
- 13:56Speaker 6: right mindset and the right focus, I think we can
- 14:00Speaker 6: play with anybody. I mean, that's what's kind of happened.
- 14:02Speaker 6: I think in some of these second halfs is we've
- 14:04Speaker 6: been able to go in a halftime and say, Okay, look, hey,
- 14:06Speaker 6: look we called this a couple of times. Hey, we're
- 14:08Speaker 6: going in this direction. Now, this is what we practice,
- 14:09Speaker 6: is why we have this. And I've been really impressed
- 14:13Speaker 6: with our ability to go do that with.
- 14:15Speaker 8: With Cashes on the other side, TJ serious, he has
- 14:17Speaker 8: kind of been a guy who just kind of seemingly
- 14:19Speaker 8: quietly gunner about his business. What what what did you
- 14:22Speaker 8: see from him for him to kind of be in
- 14:23Speaker 8: that that starting role and just his continued progress.
- 14:28Speaker 5: I think we look at him and day on his
- 14:29Speaker 5: like one like one A one B.
- 14:32Speaker 6: TJ plays when Norm more downs a little bit more.
- 14:34Speaker 6: Hayes plays on third down a little more, so that
- 14:37Speaker 6: that's more like who gets the start. But yeah, I look,
- 14:40Speaker 6: I had a lot of experience with TJ. I knew
- 14:43Speaker 6: he would really fit what we needed. He's long, he's
- 14:45Speaker 6: a really good run defender. He there's a there's an
- 14:48Speaker 6: intelligence and a toughness about him that I really value.
- 14:51Speaker 5: And he's he's.
- 14:53Speaker 6: He's a really important part of our run defense. I
- 14:54Speaker 6: think he's done a really nice job.
- 14:56Speaker 1: So I really enjoyed that little segment talking about Cash
- 15:00Speaker 1: is how talking about, hey, you're playing defense in the SEC,
- 15:05Speaker 1: you better have an edge. I love that. And then,
- 15:08Speaker 1: of course we already know about Toy and York, but
- 15:15Speaker 1: you know that kid's walked on and been an instinctive
- 15:18Speaker 1: football player since day one, right day one, And he
- 15:23Speaker 1: has better players around him. He's a year older, he's
- 15:31Speaker 1: got a defense playing with confidence in front of him,
- 15:35Speaker 1: and you know, you could just see him grow as
- 15:40Speaker 1: well as a as a third year guy. Right, But
- 15:47Speaker 1: two really special players, right, all American players, and more
- 15:55Speaker 1: to compliment as well. So I enjoyed that little segment.
- 16:02Speaker 1: We have more time, we'll we'll play some more a
- 16:05Speaker 1: little bit later the week as well with Colin Klein.
- 16:13Speaker 1: And you know when when it's it's it was fun
- 16:18Speaker 1: listening he said he loses his mind. He didn't lose
- 16:22Speaker 1: his mind. Yeah, and that, you know, defenses is very
- 16:26Speaker 1: unusual because you do have to play with there's so
- 16:30Speaker 1: much emotion, right, but you you can't go over the line.
- 16:35Speaker 1: And and as we talked about yesterday with the writers,
- 16:38Speaker 1: they have done a better job curtailing the penalties. The
- 16:43Speaker 1: ricks penalty was a bad one. They've done a better
- 16:46Speaker 1: job of doing that. And they have to continue to
- 16:50Speaker 1: do that to get, you know, where they can go
- 16:54Speaker 1: where they want to go. And so pretty interesting. All right,
- 17:02Speaker 1: I think we're ready. We're gonna jump out to the
- 17:04Speaker 1: player's fudg center phone line. We're going to visit with
- 17:08Speaker 1: Paul Myers. His book is called John Candy, A Life
- 17:11Speaker 1: in Comedy, Right.
- 17:13Speaker 17: Chip, I'm good. I'm good.
- 17:16Speaker 16: I'm in Toronto in a hotel room, enjoying talking to
- 17:20Speaker 16: people about John Candy.
- 17:21Speaker 1: I tell you, I guess everyone is the same, but
- 17:26Speaker 1: you just mentioned the name and I laugh.
- 17:29Speaker 16: Yeah, it's true, right, It's I've had this experience on
- 17:33Speaker 16: the book tour where I feel like I'm receiving for John.
- 17:38Speaker 16: Their like their statements, like there they want to make
- 17:41Speaker 16: a declaration about John Candy.
- 17:43Speaker 17: So you mentioned his name, they smile.
- 17:45Speaker 16: Then they tell you their favorite role or something that
- 17:48Speaker 16: kindness that he actually Like, I talk to people who
- 17:51Speaker 16: worked in the cruise, on his movies or working on
- 17:53Speaker 16: the TV shows, and they're telling me, you know, he
- 17:55Speaker 16: will he helped me unpack lighting cables one day. You know,
- 17:59Speaker 16: I'm sure the union were not too happy about that,
- 18:01Speaker 16: but you know what I mean, Like he basically would
- 18:05Speaker 16: help you wield stuff.
- 18:06Speaker 17: To the car, you know, and he didn't have to.
- 18:08Speaker 16: He could have gone to his trailer, but he wanted
- 18:09Speaker 16: to make sure everyone was cool, you know.
- 18:11Speaker 17: So that's why we smile when we think of John Candy.
- 18:14Speaker 1: You grew up in the family, so to speak. What
- 18:17Speaker 1: did you learn about him when you were researching this book.
- 18:21Speaker 18: Well, I'd say the two big revelations are that that
- 18:26Speaker 18: he well it's part of two things, which he wanted
- 18:29Speaker 18: to be a football player, but he had a high
- 18:31Speaker 18: school football injury that kind of tore his knee out
- 18:34Speaker 18: to the point where he just couldn't do it anymore.
- 18:36Speaker 17: He couldn't play football. He could still walk, but he
- 18:38Speaker 17: couldn't play football.
- 18:39Speaker 16: And he discovered drama and actually wanted to be a
- 18:44Speaker 16: serious dramatic actor. And I think he kind of always
- 18:48Speaker 16: in all of his comedy roles. He is a dramatic actor,
- 18:51Speaker 16: but he knows how to do the comedy as well.
- 18:53Speaker 16: And I think if he had before he discovered the
- 18:57Speaker 16: Second City stage in Toronto through an accident of Dan
- 19:00Speaker 16: Aykroyd pushing him into an audition, he never even thought
- 19:04Speaker 16: about doing comedy, you know. And he liked comedy growing up.
- 19:08Speaker 16: He was a huge fan of like Dick Van Dyke
- 19:10Speaker 16: and mel Brooks and all these people like that he
- 19:13Speaker 16: had seen, and Jackie Gleeson I think might have been
- 19:15Speaker 16: somebody who modeled like big Man comedy for him. But
- 19:21Speaker 16: he really wanted to be a dramatic actor, but comedy
- 19:23Speaker 16: was just too It was right there. They wanted him
- 19:26Speaker 16: to do comedy and he was good at it, so
- 19:28Speaker 16: he just did it, and it was It took him
- 19:33Speaker 16: a while to get back to some dramatic roles like
- 19:35Speaker 16: JFK or Only the Lonely, where he played a little
- 19:38Speaker 16: more serious, you know, And I think that's the big
- 19:42Speaker 16: discovery for me, is that he had this other dramatic
- 19:44Speaker 16: side and that's what made his comedy work. Is he
- 19:46Speaker 16: had emotional intelligence to be a great actor.
- 19:49Speaker 1: What are the odds that this group of people would
- 19:54Speaker 1: come together at SCTV Second City, But then SCTV it's
- 20:01Speaker 1: just a stunning amount of talent that was around.
- 20:05Speaker 17: It's it is crazy.
- 20:06Speaker 16: It's a it's a convergence or harmonic convergence if you will,
- 20:11Speaker 16: you know. So we had this moment in Canada where
- 20:15Speaker 16: they had been celebrating in nineteen sixty seven the one
- 20:18Speaker 16: hundredth anniversary of Canada and living so close to the
- 20:22Speaker 16: United States and having British culture and even French culture
- 20:25Speaker 16: be part of our story.
- 20:27Speaker 11: And.
- 20:29Speaker 16: Not knowing what the Canadian identity is, you know, including
- 20:33Speaker 16: like the First Nation's indigenous people.
- 20:34Speaker 17: There's a whole bunch.
- 20:35Speaker 16: Of things that are Canada, but nobody could agree on
- 20:37Speaker 16: what Canada was. But at that moment, a lot of
- 20:40Speaker 16: creative people started to feel proud of being you know,
- 20:44Speaker 16: not in an aggressive way, just kind of in a
- 20:46Speaker 16: proud way of like this is we're kind of a
- 20:48Speaker 16: family of Canadians.
- 20:49Speaker 17: I'm Canadians, so.
- 20:50Speaker 16: I know what this was and we watched SETV and
- 20:54Speaker 16: but but going back to where that scene came from,
- 20:58Speaker 16: there was God Spelled. The music had been a big
- 21:01Speaker 16: in New York when they opened to Toronto cast, and
- 21:03Speaker 16: the Toronto cast was a lot of homegrown people like
- 21:05Speaker 16: Andrea Martin and Eugene Labby and Martin Short. And then
- 21:10Speaker 16: the Second City Theater from Chicago opened to Toronto office
- 21:14Speaker 16: and they had to get local people, and some of
- 21:16Speaker 16: the Godspelled people came to the Second City auditions, and
- 21:19Speaker 16: they had this house in Toronto that all these musical
- 21:23Speaker 16: theater and comedian people knew each other. So it really
- 21:26Speaker 16: was like a salon or Paris in the nineteen twenties,
- 21:28Speaker 16: or New York in the punk rock days of the seventies,
- 21:31Speaker 16: where everybody you know. In New York you had Blondie,
- 21:34Speaker 16: the Ramones and Talking Heads and all these bands that
- 21:36Speaker 16: were all hanging out at the same club. And that's
- 21:38Speaker 16: what you had in comedy in Toronto. And it is
- 21:40Speaker 16: a different, different genre, but they and they all learned
- 21:45Speaker 16: from each other and with each other, and I think
- 21:47Speaker 16: it was a little like a university and they and
- 21:50Speaker 16: Dan Akwright says this in the book and you see
- 21:53Speaker 16: it later in their careers. They all worked with each
- 21:55Speaker 16: other all the time, including Shit's Creek, you know, which
- 21:58Speaker 16: is two techn city people, and those Christopher Guest movies
- 22:01Speaker 16: had a lot of second c people because they know
- 22:03Speaker 16: how to work together.
- 22:04Speaker 17: They work well in groups.
- 22:06Speaker 16: So, you know, more the more, it's more of a
- 22:08Speaker 16: shame that John Candy did to live because he probably
- 22:10Speaker 16: would have been in those movies.
- 22:11Speaker 1: You know, you mentioned that he always had body image issues,
- 22:17Speaker 1: even in the movie Stripes, which was you know, that
- 22:21Speaker 1: was part of his coming out in acting frankly, but
- 22:24Speaker 1: but the role of Ox and especially that mud wrestling scene,
- 22:27Speaker 1: which is iconic in the movie, he was never comfortable with.
- 22:33Speaker 16: Yeah, you know, he was a people pleaser, so he
- 22:36Speaker 16: would go along to get along.
- 22:38Speaker 17: You know, he liked everyone else to be happy, and so.
- 22:41Speaker 16: He did a lot lot of He took on a
- 22:44Speaker 16: lot of roles that were clearly written about his weight
- 22:46Speaker 16: and and you know, he knew how to make that funny.
- 22:48Speaker 16: A lot of a lot of people do that in comedy.
- 22:51Speaker 17: They make what you can't fix you features the phrase
- 22:53Speaker 17: people use all the time.
- 22:54Speaker 16: And but there was always a moment where he tried
- 22:57Speaker 16: to bring dignity to these roles, but there was a few.
- 23:01Speaker 17: There were a few that clearly pushed it.
- 23:03Speaker 16: And I had a conversation with Ivan Rightman, the late
- 23:05Speaker 16: Ivan Rightman, before he passed, and the scene in Stripes
- 23:10Speaker 16: where there's a mud wrestling scene that kind of plays
- 23:12Speaker 16: against the idea that the big guy is going to
- 23:14Speaker 16: go wrestling with the bikini clad women in mud, you know,
- 23:18Speaker 16: demeaning on all kinds of levels to the women and
- 23:21Speaker 16: to John. And Dave Thomas tells me in the book
- 23:24Speaker 16: who you know he was also in that movie. Dave
- 23:26Speaker 16: Thomas from Second City was there and so he knew
- 23:29Speaker 16: John really well, and he could tell that John.
- 23:31Speaker 17: Was in you know, stewing and that he was just
- 23:34Speaker 17: doing it, but he was not.
- 23:35Speaker 5: Happy about it.
- 23:36Speaker 16: And Joe Flaherty also mentioned it because he was in
- 23:38Speaker 16: the movie too, and you could tell that it was
- 23:41Speaker 16: one of those ones where, you know, I think he
- 23:45Speaker 16: never really brought it up.
- 23:46Speaker 17: He did tell Ivan Wrightman that he didn't want to
- 23:48Speaker 17: do it. Yeah, he would do it anyway.
- 23:50Speaker 16: Yeah, And you know, I think I think later in
- 23:53Speaker 16: life he might have put his foot down more but
- 23:56Speaker 16: it was early in his career.
- 23:57Speaker 17: Yeah, so those.
- 23:58Speaker 16: Kinds of things happened, and I'm once he once he
- 24:02Speaker 16: became a star, he tried really hard to control, uh,
- 24:05Speaker 16: you know, to sort of not let people put him
- 24:07Speaker 16: in these positions.
- 24:08Speaker 1: You know, he went on a lot of diets, didn't he.
- 24:11Speaker 1: I mean he tried Carl Reiner.
- 24:14Speaker 16: Carl Reiner put him in summer rental and immediately said
- 24:17Speaker 16: to him, if you're not happy with the weight.
- 24:19Speaker 17: You know, there's these diets.
- 24:20Speaker 16: And there's one called the Predicten diet, which was you know,
- 24:23Speaker 16: a clinic that the Predicten Center, and it was you know,
- 24:26Speaker 16: like a weight Watchers or Atkinsoner or something. It's one
- 24:29Speaker 16: of those fad. I mean, it was considered a medical thing,
- 24:32Speaker 16: but it was a fad, you know, like.
- 24:33Speaker 17: So many things.
- 24:34Speaker 16: And you know today it would have been a zampic
- 24:36Speaker 16: maybe I don't know, Yes, you know, just cheat.
- 24:39Speaker 17: But if it saved your life, that's great.
- 24:42Speaker 16: But the Yeah, so he did try the diets, but
- 24:46Speaker 16: he also liked to medicate after work with.
- 24:48Speaker 17: Food and a few drinks.
- 24:50Speaker 16: So so he wasn't doing himself any favors there, you know,
- 24:52Speaker 16: but you know, but he did try really hard.
- 24:55Speaker 1: One of the big revelations to me is he almost
- 24:58Speaker 1: got the part of mister Wolf in Pulp Fiction.
- 25:02Speaker 16: Well, this goes to the dramatic thing. He could have
- 25:04Speaker 16: done this great role. Tarantino offered him the part of
- 25:08Speaker 16: mister Wolf in Pulp Fiction, which later went to Harvey Kitel.
- 25:11Speaker 17: Yep, and of course Kayitel did a great job.
- 25:13Speaker 16: But yeah, Candy didn't want to do a violent film
- 25:16Speaker 16: that had so much sexuality in it because it wasn't
- 25:18Speaker 16: his brand. So who knows what that would have been,
- 25:21Speaker 16: but it was.
- 25:21Speaker 17: Yeah, isn't that great?
- 25:22Speaker 16: Like, Yeah, so many things that we'll never get to see,
- 25:25Speaker 16: but I'm glad we got have to talk about it
- 25:27Speaker 16: in the book.
- 25:28Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, I could go on and on. I
- 25:30Speaker 1: still maintain SCTV is the greatest comedy show in the
- 25:34Speaker 1: history of television, and I'll stand by that right on.

- 29:59Speaker 1: big Toronto He was sporting his Blue Jays swag last night.
- 30:06Speaker 1: Haley was cash in a great jacket, tiny blue star
- 30:12Speaker 1: sticker on her forehead to show her own support for

- 30:58Speaker 11: I don't even remember the first.
- 31:00Speaker 1: Now I don't. This This story doesn't say if Justin
- 31:07Speaker 1: and Haley stayed for the entire game. I would rather
- 31:10Speaker 1: doubt it since it lasted over six hours and went
- 31:13Speaker 1: eighteen innings. Oh my god, Yes, yes, yes, it was
- 31:19Speaker 1: a long one last night.
- 31:22Speaker 11: Well, you know the people have paid to be there.
- 31:25Speaker 1: Hey, I'm telling you they did get their money's worth
- 31:28Speaker 1: at probably a nap or two along the way.
- 31:31Speaker 11: Basically two games, you know, I.
- 31:35Speaker 1: Did two for the price of one. Congrats, Yeah, congrats
- 31:40Speaker 1: to them. Unfortunately, the Beams left unhappy his his team lost. Well,
- 31:47Speaker 1: what are you gonna do?
- 31:48Speaker 11: Want them all?
- 31:49Speaker 1: What are you going to do? I think Taylor was
- 31:52Speaker 1: at a game last night, was she not?
- 31:54Speaker 22: She was, but she was a lot more discreet really imagine,
- 31:58Speaker 22: you know, And I've noticed this this. I don't know
- 32:00Speaker 22: if it's security concerns or her just getting tired of
- 32:05Speaker 22: people hating on her for going to her Beyonce's football games.
- 32:11Speaker 22: But she did make her way to the suite for
- 32:13Speaker 22: another home game to support Travis Kelcey. Yeah exactly, as
- 32:18Speaker 22: she sported a red turtleneck and a golden necklace. The
- 32:22Speaker 22: Chief Commander's matchup on Monday Night Football, she was spotted
- 32:25Speaker 22: in the box next to Brittany Mahomes.
- 32:27Speaker 1: She needs to stay away from her.
- 32:32Speaker 22: Well friendship, which one, wow, both kidding, changing your mind.
- 32:41Speaker 22: He's like, nah, you know what, Actually it's fine, but
- 32:44Speaker 22: they did, you know, point down at the field after
- 32:48Speaker 22: he did get a touchdown, So good on you.
- 32:51Speaker 1: Good and she and and she does know now what
- 32:54Speaker 1: a touchdown is. After two years of going to games.
- 32:58Speaker 22: You know, we can only hope, can only hope. But
- 33:01Speaker 22: as a nod to the singer's favorite number, the announcer said,
- 33:04Speaker 22: we've got over thirty cameras bringing you Monday Night football,

- 33:25Speaker 22: The pregame commentary, the Titan's brother, Jason Kelsey tease the fit, saying,

- 33:38Speaker 22: year's tunnel shruts the televised cutaways, Swift has brought a
- 33:41Speaker 22: lower profile, with her appearances only captured by fans seated
- 33:46Speaker 22: below her suite.
- 33:47Speaker 11: I'm sure, she said, I don't know. Don't main me
- 33:52Speaker 11: call my lawyer if you put the camera on me.
- 33:55Speaker 1: Too bad. If you're gonna go out in public, you're

- 35:26Speaker 6: Was it?
- 35:26Speaker 17: No?
- 35:26Speaker 1: I think that's right. Yeah, Pacino's same thing.
- 35:30Speaker 23: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 35:36Speaker 11: So, uh, split up whatever wealth you've got left, I guess.
- 35:41Speaker 22: I don't know.
- 35:43Speaker 1: So when this kid is going to college, Kelsey will
- 35:48Speaker 1: be gumming oatmeal and some old folks home.

- 36:44Speaker 22: This equal uh to the beloved two thousand and three films.
- 36:51Speaker 22: I loved it, but to be fair, I was very

- 36:55Speaker 11: Would love it.
- 36:56Speaker 1: No, okay, I mean.
- 37:00Speaker 11: I thought it was great.

- 37:11Speaker 22: Anyways, it's coming to It's coming, uh to Disney Plus.
- 37:14Speaker 1: To be honest, I mean, I'm a big Jamie Lake
- 37:16Speaker 1: Curtis fan. I like Jamie Lee Curtiss.
- 37:20Speaker 22: I like Jamie Lee Curtiston, and I actually like her
- 37:22Speaker 22: and Lindsay Lohan's relationship outside.

- 38:34Speaker 1: favorite podcasters investigating another devastating death of one of their own,
- 38:39Speaker 1: the doorman Lester. Our beloved doorman has a hold of
- 38:44Speaker 1: a large amount of tenants in our buildings. Secrets and
- 38:48Speaker 1: many other things about his life were interesting to me,
- 38:51Speaker 1: said co creator John Hoffman. We're really dipping our toe
- 38:55Speaker 1: into New York City in season five. After the season
- 38:59Speaker 1: finale UH wrapped today, fans were I've seen the first
- 39:05Speaker 1: two of season five. Fans were eager to find out
- 39:09Speaker 1: whether the Emmy nominated series had been renewed for another installment.
- 39:15Speaker 1: Nothing confirmed yet, but last year Hoffman told Variety he'll
- 39:21Speaker 1: stick with only murders in the building as long as
- 39:24Speaker 1: he can. Once you get over the hump of how
- 39:28Speaker 1: many murders can happen in one building, you're really stepping
- 39:31Speaker 1: back and looking ultimately at the true original concept, which
- 39:35Speaker 1: is three lonely people in New York City brought together
- 39:38Speaker 1: by common interest in true crime. I mean, I do
- 39:44Speaker 1: I do like the Oh yeah you would, They're they're
- 39:48Speaker 1: they're they're very good together. I will say very good together.
- 39:53Speaker 1: And we can only hope for a season six.

- 40:07Speaker 11: Paul rud Yeah, who else? Yeah, I don't even know.
- 40:10Speaker 22: I'm trying to think what celebrity they could talk like?
- 40:12Speaker 22: Who could they talk by bringing who? Would you be
- 40:15Speaker 22: excited to see.
- 40:17Speaker 1: Clint Eastwood something?
- 40:25Speaker 11: I don't know why.
- 40:26Speaker 23: Clin Eastwood, you've gotta you've got a murder in this building.
- 40:35Speaker 23: I'll get him.
- 40:39Speaker 1: Is the most powerful handgun known? De man, you gotta ask,
- 40:44Speaker 1: I don't know. Do you feel lucky? Punk?
- 40:47Speaker 22: Do you see Clint Eastwood ever living in an apartment building.
- 40:50Speaker 1: Though in New York? No, No, I do not, No Clinton,
- 40:55Speaker 1: Clint's a West Coast guy all the way. Of course,
- 40:57Speaker 1: he owns about half. He owns about half for California.
- 41:01Speaker 11: Oh you know when you get out of that star power? Yeah,
- 41:06Speaker 11: I guess.
- 41:08Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know what made me bring
- 41:10Speaker 1: up Clintie would, But I think that would be awesome.
- 41:13Speaker 1: Pliny's would in New York trying to solve a murder. Oh,
- 41:16Speaker 1: that'd be awesome. I would love that.
- 41:18Speaker 5: I know.
- 41:18Speaker 11: Honestly, sign me up too.
- 41:20Speaker 22: He could be the mysterious guy that no one ever
- 41:22Speaker 22: talks about you disappears season.
- 41:24Speaker 1: Five, you'recome. The show just rights itself.
- 41:31Speaker 11: We just helped you. I'll give all the credit to.
- 41:34Speaker 1: Chip though, Thank you, thank you.
- 41:39Speaker 22: Moving on, just because I know it'll probably if I'm
- 41:43Speaker 22: so lucky to get to talk tomorrow, we'll talk about
- 41:47Speaker 22: this just because it's Dances with the Stars, and you
- 41:48Speaker 22: know how I feel about dancing.
- 41:50Speaker 1: You love Dancing with the Stars.
- 41:53Speaker 22: Well, after three years away, I'm surprised it hasn't been
- 41:56Speaker 22: longer than three years because it's felt longer.
- 42:00Speaker 11: Burke, which do you even know who that is? It's
- 42:03Speaker 11: expecting water.
- 42:04Speaker 22: Works when she makes her return to Dancing with the
- 42:06Speaker 22: Start tonight.
- 42:09Speaker 11: It is tonight. It's going to be emotional.
- 42:12Speaker 1: It's going to be I think for all of us,
- 42:14Speaker 1: it's going to be emotional, don't you.
- 42:17Speaker 11: I mean sure, I don't really care. She was never
- 42:19Speaker 11: one of my favorites. I mean that respectfully.
- 42:22Speaker 22: But it is Halloween night, so I am very excited
- 42:25Speaker 22: about that because I do love Halloween.
- 42:27Speaker 11: It's going to be all the feels. So my makeup artists,
- 42:29Speaker 11: it's going to have a hard time.
- 42:31Speaker 1: You have your outfit.
- 42:34Speaker 13: M hmm.
- 42:36Speaker 22: I mean if I decide to put myself together.
- 42:39Speaker 11: I could be a mom that has her stuff together.
- 42:42Speaker 1: So does Georgia have her outfit?
- 42:45Speaker 11: Yeah?
- 42:45Speaker 22: The thing with her though, is that she changes her
- 42:48Speaker 22: mind very frequently. So we've got we've got options, got
- 42:53Speaker 22: options for Georgia.
- 42:56Speaker 11: Me.
- 42:57Speaker 22: I'm just gonna go with whatever works.
- 42:59Speaker 1: I'm just going to tell you. I'm going to tell
- 43:02Speaker 1: you if well, I'm handing out candy, but but I'm
- 43:07Speaker 1: I'm going to be dressed and little ones beware. That's
- 43:13Speaker 1: all I'm going to say. Yes, no, I'm going to
- 43:19Speaker 1: see Nope, nope, I'm going to see how many I
- 43:24Speaker 1: can make just cry like little babies that come to
- 43:27Speaker 1: the door. And that way, yeah, yeah, that way we
- 43:32Speaker 1: don't have to give us give as much candy away.
- 43:35Speaker 1: I I don't want to give everything away because I've
- 43:38Speaker 1: done this before. I will just tell you there is
- 43:42Speaker 1: a red balloon involved.
- 43:47Speaker 11: I mean that that gave a lot of way.
- 43:49Speaker 1: Spooky huh.
- 43:51Speaker 22: I was going to ask if you were bringing the
- 43:53Speaker 22: blonde mullet back out, but.
- 43:55Speaker 11: I know not.
- 43:56Speaker 1: No, No, this is this is real deal stuff Friday night.
- 44:02Speaker 1: So come on by people now. And now I take

- 44:09Speaker 1: You're not invited. Uh, this is big news. Taylor Sheridan
- 44:15Speaker 1: is leaving Paramount and going to NBC Universal with a new, massive,
- 44:21Speaker 1: five year deal for films, TV and streaming. The biggest
- 44:26Speaker 1: question is what will happen to the franchises at Paramount.
- 44:32Speaker 1: Sheridan is set to deliver more seasons of his ongoing
- 44:36Speaker 1: hits Yellowstone spinoffs, Dutton Ranch, The Madison for Paramount plus
- 44:42Speaker 1: Why Marshals. When Sheridan does finally head to NBC Universal,
- 44:48Speaker 1: he will have to create holy new stuff. He won't
- 44:56Speaker 1: be making the full leap for another three years. Well good,
- 45:00Speaker 1: why are we even talking about this? Now?
- 45:03Speaker 22: We'll talk about this in maybe three years.
- 45:06Speaker 1: Sheridan's close collaborator and producing partner David Glasser, is also
- 45:11Speaker 1: making the jump. Glasser signed a first look film and
- 45:16Speaker 1: TV deal with NBC Universal that will begin early next
- 45:19Speaker 1: year after his company fulfills its current obligations to Paramount.
- 45:25Speaker 1: So there you go. This guy. This guy's making a
- 45:30Speaker 1: lot of money, this Taylor Sheridan guy. And he is prolific.
- 45:36Speaker 1: My gosh, this guy writes a lot of stuff. I
- 45:39Speaker 1: don't know how he does it, but hey, more power
- 45:41Speaker 1: to him. There you go, And I wish he'd leave
- 45:45Speaker 1: himself out of his shows. By the way, he's not
- 45:49Speaker 1: nearly as good an actor as he thinks.
- 45:50Speaker 11: He is, just a little helpful hint.
- 45:54Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I'm just saying yeah, I'm sure he's listening.
- 46:00Speaker 11: I'm sure.
- 46:01Speaker 22: I mean, why wouldn't you show switching gears completely? Because
- 46:06Speaker 22: I don't know how this would relate to anything we've
- 46:08Speaker 22: already talked about. An aunt of Prince William and Prince
- 46:11Speaker 22: Harry is recovering after a really bad fall from her
- 46:14Speaker 22: whose oh, Lady Sarah mc.

- 46:37Speaker 22: on Rosebud with Gil's bandwith I Don't Know podcast on Friday.
- 46:43Speaker 22: Describing the incident, Charles said that Lady Sarah, who is seventy,
- 46:48Speaker 22: she's still writing, and she had a really bad fall
- 46:50Speaker 22: last month and has been in the hospital for a
- 46:52Speaker 22: long time. I think she is She's quite a handful
- 46:56Speaker 22: of a patient because the lead doctor said to my
- 46:59Speaker 22: brother in law. She's quite a character, isn't she, which
- 47:04Speaker 22: I think is code for could you take her home?
- 47:07Speaker 1: Poor lady Sarah.
- 47:10Speaker 11: She is on the men though, So there's that.
