- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look
- 0:05Speaker 1: not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature,
- 0:09Speaker 1: because I have refused him. For the Lord seeth not
- 0:13Speaker 1: as man seeth. For man looketh on the outward appearance,
- 0:17Speaker 1: but the Lord looketh on the heart. 1 Samuel 16.7
- 0:24Speaker 1: Thank you, God, that the same anointing that rested on
- 0:27Speaker 1: David in 1 Samuel 16 the same anointing that rests
- 0:31Speaker 1: on my life. When men try to overlook me because
- 0:35Speaker 1: of what they perceive as a hindrance, I thank you
- 0:38Speaker 1: that you will anoint me in their presence, because you
- 0:41Speaker 1: determine elevation by the heart. Therefore, keep my heart pure
- 0:47Speaker 1: through all circumstances and seasons of my life, because this
- 0:51Speaker 1: will be the key to my opportunities and advancement. Just
- 0:57Speaker 1: like you strategically placed David in the palace, the place
- 1:00Speaker 1: of his future destiny, I thank you for placing me
- 1:03Speaker 1: in the vicinity of my destiny as well. Father, you
- 1:07Speaker 1: can call upon me because my heart is positioned to
- 1:10Speaker 1: do your will fully and completely. If you anoint me
- 1:16Speaker 1: and choose me, I'll go. Thank you for anointing me
- 1:21Speaker 1: and calling me in the presence of those who doubt me.
- 1:25Speaker 1: In Jesus' name.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Amen.

- 1:46Speaker 3: David is chosen. In our last story, we learned about
- 1:51Speaker 3: Saul's rejection as king. His pride, greed, and disobedience lost
- 1:56Speaker 3: him the favor of God. Samuel wept over Saul's fall.
- 2:01Speaker 3: Now we will learn about God's new king, chosen not
- 2:04Speaker 3: for his stature or status, but his heart. Inspired by
- 2:09Speaker 3: the book of 1 Samuel.
- 2:14Speaker 2: We're so glad you joined us on the Bible in

- 2:54Speaker 2: you for your support. In yesterday's story, we saw how
- 2:59Speaker 2: Saul disobeyed God and lied to Samuel when confronted with
- 3:03Speaker 2: his sin. Saul had rejected God and chosen to exalt
- 3:06Speaker 2: himself rather than obey God. As a result, God tells
- 3:11Speaker 2: Saul that he will lose his throne and it will
- 3:13Speaker 2: be given to another. Today we will hear how God
- 3:16Speaker 2: chooses a young man, a shepherd boy, that nobody would
- 3:19Speaker 2: have expected to be God's pick for such a mighty king.
- 3:24Speaker 2: But this young man had the heart that God desired
- 3:26Speaker 2: in a leader, and he would grow into the greatest
- 3:29Speaker 2: king Israel would ever know. Let's listen now to today's reading.
- 3:36Speaker 3: Samuel mourned the loss of Saul's soul to the burden
- 3:39Speaker 3: of power. He mourned the state of Israel under a
- 3:42Speaker 3: king with a weakness for status and fame. God came
- 3:46Speaker 3: to Samuel in his mourning and said, Why do you
- 3:49Speaker 3: grieve over Saul? I have rejected him. Go, fill up
- 3:54Speaker 3: your horn with oil and go to the home of
- 3:56Speaker 3: Jesse in Bethlehem. I have provided Israel with a new
- 4:00Speaker 3: king among his sons. Samuel's heart began to pound. Excitement
- 4:05Speaker 3: filled his old bones. He gathered sacrifices to be made
- 4:09Speaker 3: in Bethlehem, for he did not want Saul to know
- 4:12Speaker 3: he was searching for a king. Samuel greeted Jesse, and
- 4:16Speaker 3: the two of them ate together and consecrated the land
- 4:19Speaker 3: for God. Samuel looked at Jesse intently and asked if
- 4:23Speaker 3: he could bring forth his sons. When they came, Samuel
- 4:27Speaker 3: looked at the oldest, Eliab. He was a well-built man, tall, muscular,
- 4:32Speaker 3: and had charismatic qualities that made up a king. Surely
- 4:36Speaker 3: this must be the Lord's anointed, Samuel thought to himself.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Yet God interrupted him and said, Do not look at
- 4:43Speaker 3: his stature or looks, for I do not see as
- 4:46Speaker 3: man sees. Man looks at the outward appearance, but I
- 4:50Speaker 3: look upon the heart. Abinadab came forth before Samuel, and
- 4:55Speaker 3: he too was not the one God had chosen. Seven
- 4:58Speaker 3: more of his sons passed by Samuel, and none of
- 5:01Speaker 3: them were the one God had spoken of. Frustrated and
- 5:05Speaker 3: a bit flustered, Samuel turned to Jesse and said, Are
- 5:08Speaker 3: these all your sons? Jesse scratched his head and said, Well,
- 5:13Speaker 3: there is still the youngest. He is out in the
- 5:16Speaker 3: field tending to the sheep. David was in the fields.
- 5:20Speaker 3: The day was almost over and the cool spring air
- 5:23Speaker 3: whistled across the grass where the sheep fed. David often
- 5:27Speaker 3: took them to a hill not too far from home
- 5:29Speaker 3: where he would sit and look at the stars. David
- 5:32Speaker 3: sat in complete peace, but still on alert for any
- 5:36Speaker 3: predators that may lurk around the corner. David took a
- 5:40Speaker 3: deep breath, soaking in the last rays of good sunlight.
- 5:43Speaker 3: As his eyes were closed, he could hear his father's
- 5:46Speaker 3: voice in the distance, beckoning him. Slowly and methodically, David
- 5:51Speaker 3: corralled the sheep and stepped into his father's house. Samuel
- 5:55Speaker 3: was sitting when David entered into the home. He had
- 5:58Speaker 3: a smile on his face. He was a handsome young man.
- 6:01Speaker 3: no older than 17, and had beautiful eyes that made
- 6:04Speaker 3: you feel warm and welcomed. God whispered to Samuel and said, Arise, for.
- 6:10Speaker 1: This is my king.
- 6:14Speaker 3: So Samuel stood up slowly and laughed. He looked at
- 6:18Speaker 3: David and anointed him with oil. Samuel did not tell
- 6:22Speaker 3: David or Jesse that he was going to be king
- 6:24Speaker 3: of Israel, for he knew that the Lord would call
- 6:27Speaker 3: David in due time. From that time forward, the Spirit
- 6:31Speaker 3: of God was upon David. Weeks had passed, and Saul
- 6:35Speaker 3: was greatly disturbed at night. His dreams consumed him, and
- 6:39Speaker 3: his days were filled with anxiety, paranoia, and loneliness. God
- 6:44Speaker 3: had departed from him, and he could not bear the
- 6:47Speaker 3: sight of himself in the mirror. Saul's servant saw how
- 6:50Speaker 3: tormented he was and offered respite in the form of music.'
- 6:53Speaker 3: My lord,' the servant said, I know of a man
- 6:57Speaker 3: named Jesse who is in Bethlehem. His son is very
- 7:01Speaker 3: skilled with the lyre and could possibly offer you rest
- 7:04Speaker 3: with his music. So Saul sent for David, and David
- 7:08Speaker 3: served under Saul as his musician and armor-bearer. Saul grew
- 7:12Speaker 3: to love David as a son, and whenever he was tormented,
- 7:16Speaker 3: David would play music and worship God in his presence.
- 7:20Speaker 3: Listening to David's worship was the closest to God he
- 7:23Speaker 3: had felt in months. David was only a few feet
- 7:26Speaker 3: from the throne that God had called him to sit upon,
- 7:30Speaker 3: yet neither him nor Saul knew that. God was in
- 7:33Speaker 3: their midst. He would raise up David as he once
- 7:36Speaker 3: did Moses, Joshua, and every judge that came before him.
- 7:41Speaker 3: David was his chosen hero, destined to change the course
- 7:46Speaker 3: of Israel forever.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Samuel was distraught over Saul's sin and rejection of God's ways.
- 7:56Speaker 2: He took it personally, though it was not him that
- 7:58Speaker 2: Saul had rejected, it was God. This is the same
- 8:02Speaker 2: as when the people rejected God as their king and
- 8:05Speaker 2: Samuel grieved over their demands for a king. Clearly, this
- 8:10Speaker 2: prophet had a heart for his people and a heart
- 8:12Speaker 2: for the Lord, and it saddened him to see the
- 8:15Speaker 2: state of this beloved nation and the leader that God
- 8:18Speaker 2: had appointed. but everything was going just as God had said.
- 8:22Speaker 2: So God told Samuel to dry his tears and to
- 8:25Speaker 2: get his horn ready with anointing oil. The time had
- 8:29Speaker 2: come to choose a new man that God was calling
- 8:33Speaker 2: to the job. He sends Samuel to Jesse, a man
- 8:36Speaker 2: in Bethlehem who has many sons. It was from Jesse's
- 8:40Speaker 2: household that God would call a new king. So Samuel
- 8:43Speaker 2: and Jesse share a meal and consecrate the land. Then
- 8:46Speaker 2: Samuel asked him to call his sons. The oldest is
- 8:50Speaker 2: presented to him. Samuel sees Eliab and is sure this
- 8:54Speaker 2: will be God's pick. But God says to Samuel in
- 8:57Speaker 2: 1 Samuel 16 and verse 7, Do not look on
- 9:00Speaker 2: his appearance or on the height of his stature, because
- 9:04Speaker 2: I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as
- 9:07Speaker 2: man sees. Man looks on the outward appearance, but the
- 9:11Speaker 2: Lord looks on the heart. So one at a time,
- 9:14Speaker 2: six strong young men are presented to Jesse. Each one,
- 9:18Speaker 2: from a human perspective, seems to be fit to be
- 9:21Speaker 2: the king, but God is silent on each of them.
- 9:25Speaker 2: God is far less interested in what seems humanly possible
- 9:29Speaker 2: or logical. God does not need the strongest or the
- 9:32Speaker 2: brightest to accomplish his purposes. He used Moses, a timid speaker,
- 9:37Speaker 2: to lead the people out of Egypt. He used Joseph,
- 9:39Speaker 2: a prisoner and a slave, to save a nation from starvation.
- 9:43Speaker 2: God looks much deeper for a heart that is willing.
- 9:46Speaker 2: and fully committed to him. So Samuel asks if there
- 9:50Speaker 2: are any more sons, and there is just one more.
- 9:54Speaker 2: But he is an unlikely choice. David wasn't even present
- 9:58Speaker 2: during the survey of the previous sons. He was a
- 10:01Speaker 2: young lad that was out tending the sheep in the field.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Samuel says he wants to see him too, so he
- 10:07Speaker 2: sent for David. The moment David enters, God tells Samuel
- 10:12Speaker 2: to arise and anoint him because he is the one
- 10:15Speaker 2: that God has chosen. Samuel does just as he is instructed.
- 10:19Speaker 2: And from that day on, God's spirit was upon David.
- 10:23Speaker 2: This unlikely king was now the man who had a
- 10:27Speaker 2: heart for God to lead the nation. Meanwhile, Saul was
- 10:31Speaker 2: battling a tormented mind. God's presence had left him. And
- 10:34Speaker 2: without God's presence, Saul was a man without any peace.
- 10:39Speaker 2: So his servants told him of a young man who
- 10:41Speaker 2: played the harp, the son of a man named Jesse.
- 10:45Speaker 2: So David, now the anointed king, still a young man,
- 10:50Speaker 2: a shepherd boy, was called to play for Saul, and
- 10:54Speaker 2: the music soothed and calmed the king. David remained with
- 10:58Speaker 2: Saul in his service, and of course that seems to
- 11:01Speaker 2: be an unlikely path for the next king to take,
- 11:03Speaker 2: but God was at work and his purposes are being fulfilled.
- 11:08Speaker 2: This was just the beginning. Soon David would conquer more
- 11:12Speaker 2: than the evil spirits that tormented Saul. He would slay
- 11:15Speaker 2: a giant that struck fear in all of Israel. And
- 11:19Speaker 2: we'll tell that story the next time. Dear God, thank
- 11:23Speaker 2: you for the story of David, that you seek people
- 11:26Speaker 2: like him after your own heart. God, that you will
- 11:29Speaker 2: use us when we are available and usable. Help us
