- 1:51Speaker 5: noise associated with this episode, just due to background conditions,
- 1:55Speaker 5: recording conditions, You're gonna hear some music and various other noise,
- 1:58Speaker 5: including just jen real kind of you know, banging around
- 2:03Speaker 5: and stuff like that in the background. We apologize for that.
- 2:06Speaker 5: We tried our best to remove as much as possible,
- 2:08Speaker 5: to clean it up as much as possible, and it's
- 2:10Speaker 5: still there. We hope it doesn't detract from the incredible

- 2:37Speaker 4: On today's episode of Beyond the Blood, we're joined by
- 2:39Speaker 4: filmmaker Anthony Cousins, a director who brought crypto terror to
- 2:43Speaker 4: the found footage world with Frogman. Is unique blend a
- 2:46Speaker 4: folk flore atmosphere and indie spirit has carved out a
- 2:50Speaker 4: place in the horror community, and now he's back with
- 2:53Speaker 4: a highly anticipated sequel, Frogman Returns. We'll be diving into
- 2:56Speaker 4: his journey as a filmmaker. The production of Frogman collaborating
- 3:00Speaker 4: with Terror Vision and what fans can expect as a
- 3:03Speaker 4: legend A Frogman continues, what's going on, Anthony, Thank you
- 3:06Speaker 4: so much for joining us.
- 3:07Speaker 3: Yeah, thanks for having me absolutely.
- 3:09Speaker 5: And of course, so are we allowed to say the
- 3:12Speaker 5: premier date of Frogman Returns?
- 3:14Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, it's public.
- 3:16Speaker 5: Okay, okay, So October nineteenth. Frogman Returns debuts at you
- 3:20Speaker 5: said Knoxville Horror.
- 3:22Speaker 3: Yeah, Knoxville Horror Film Fest is an awesome little festival.
- 3:25Speaker 3: We brought the first movie there. I've been there a
- 3:28Speaker 3: handful of times with other like short films that I've had.
- 3:32Speaker 6: They put on a really really.
- 3:33Speaker 3: Good show that it's a couple that owns a micro
- 3:36Speaker 3: cinnamon Knoxville. But then they also do a couple of
- 3:38Speaker 3: nights at a drive in theater, which is like my
- 3:41Speaker 3: big reason for wanting to go every year. It's like
- 3:44Speaker 3: it's just so rare you get to enjoy a drive
- 3:46Speaker 3: in theater these days. And like this year they're they're
- 3:50Speaker 3: all sci fi themed for some bizarre I don't know
- 3:53Speaker 3: if they've ever done themes before, like yearly themes, but
- 3:55Speaker 3: this year they like we're kind of leaning into sci fi,
- 3:58Speaker 3: which could be more perfect for Again Returns being there
- 4:01Speaker 3: because Frogment Returns definitely skews more sci fi than horror.
- 4:04Speaker 3: I would say, yeah, and they're playing the nineteen eighties
- 4:07Speaker 3: blob at the Drive that like the number one movie
- 4:12Speaker 3: I've always wanted to.
- 4:13Speaker 6: See the Drive in. Is that that movie? So I'm
- 4:15Speaker 6: super stoked.
- 4:16Speaker 5: It's nice. I saw that. I saw that at the
- 4:19Speaker 5: Colonial in Pennsylvania where the original was filmed. Kind of yeah,
- 4:25Speaker 5: kind of surreal experience.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Was that for a blobfest.
- 4:29Speaker 5: It wasn't so blobfest they played the original. This was
- 4:33Speaker 5: for some sort of horror thon and it was part
- 4:37Speaker 5: of it. And I went, and that's the only movie
- 4:38Speaker 5: I stayed forcause I was exhausted, Like it's it's like
- 4:41Speaker 5: an hour and a half for me to get there,
- 4:45Speaker 5: but it's it's just surreal to sit there and see
- 4:47Speaker 5: that movie on the screen. You know.
- 4:49Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm I'm low key obsessed.
- 4:51Speaker 3: I wanted to go. I got my Let's get blobed
- 4:54Speaker 3: T shirt on.
- 4:56Speaker 4: That's awesome.
- 4:57Speaker 6: I want to go to that.
- 4:58Speaker 3: The blobfest so bad. I don't know what happen there,
- 5:00Speaker 3: but I'm in.
- 5:01Speaker 5: It's pretty much like, uh so they got vendors outside
- 5:05Speaker 5: and it's really cool, like the ambiance is really cool.
- 5:08Speaker 5: But in the theater at night they played the original
- 5:10Speaker 5: Blob and in the scene when the Blob overtakes the
- 5:13Speaker 5: theater and everyone runs out, the whole theater runs out
- 5:16Speaker 5: at one time, one experience. I've never been there for that.
- 5:22Speaker 5: It always ends up on a weekend. That's like impossible
- 5:24Speaker 5: for me to get there. But we also have two
- 5:27Speaker 5: only a couple hours from ust Mahoney drive in, so
- 5:31Speaker 5: we go there every now and again. Yeah, it's so cool, man.
- 5:36Speaker 5: We saw Critters one and two there on the original
- 5:38Speaker 5: thirty five millimeter prints with the Kyoto brothers. Oh my god, yeah.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Dude, any anything creature feature should Yeah, I think tastes
- 5:46Speaker 3: better at the drive in.
- 5:48Speaker 5: Oh yeah, Oh my god. Yeah. I do want to
- 5:51Speaker 5: say before we heavily roll into this because I'm a
- 5:54Speaker 5: new frog Man guy. So I picked up my copy
- 5:58Speaker 5: at Walmart. I didn't get big limited edition one. I
- 6:02Speaker 5: missed it. Found it at Walmart. I am not a
- 6:06Speaker 5: big found footage guy, right, And I'm not blowing smoke
- 6:10Speaker 5: up your ass when I say.
- 6:12Speaker 4: Frogman was just being honest, dude.
- 6:14Speaker 5: It was everything I won out of my found footage.
- 6:17Speaker 5: Give me under ninety minutes. Give me, give me you know,
- 6:23Speaker 5: semi serious, like and like camp, you know, let me
- 6:26Speaker 5: let me, you know, have some fun with it and
- 6:29Speaker 5: deliver great effects. That's all I ask for. It's like,
- 6:33Speaker 5: I want to laugh and have fun. And Frogman did
- 6:37Speaker 5: all of that.
- 6:39Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 6:39Speaker 3: That means a lot, because I really when we were
- 6:42Speaker 3: making it, I was so sure. I was like, we're
- 6:45Speaker 3: making a movie that only found footage fans. Well, like,
- 6:48Speaker 3: this is a movie for found footage fans. I don't
- 6:51Speaker 3: think it's going to be very accessible if that's not
- 6:53Speaker 3: your thing. And then the amount of people that have
- 6:56Speaker 3: been like I don't like found footage, but I really
- 6:59Speaker 3: like Frogman. I'm like, wow, I really you know, I
- 7:02Speaker 3: mean you got to sit through forty minutes of just
- 7:05Speaker 3: people fucking around town before anything even happens. I was like,
- 7:08Speaker 3: this is not for an average audience, So that means
- 7:11Speaker 3: a lot.
- 7:12Speaker 5: Well, you know what it is I think when I
- 7:15Speaker 5: say not a found footage fan. I love Blair Witch Project,
- 7:19Speaker 5: I love Last Broadcast, like Watch. Yeah, I haven't seen
- 7:23Speaker 5: Ghostwatch yet because I'm still seeking out that that that
- 7:26Speaker 5: release of it. But I guess that's kind of like
- 7:30Speaker 5: the pinnacle for me, kind of some of the earlier
- 7:33Speaker 5: and Cannibal Holocaust is my favorite movie of all time,
- 7:36Speaker 5: so there is some found footage in there, but it
- 7:39Speaker 5: became so saturated in such a time in my life
- 7:42Speaker 5: when I was really discovering a lot of genre stuff,
- 7:46Speaker 5: and then everything became found footage and it just gets
- 7:49Speaker 5: washed out because it's rinse, wash, repeat. So when it
- 7:53Speaker 5: comes along now, I always going with a little bit
- 7:55Speaker 5: of optimism because I'm like, this is either gonna be
- 7:58Speaker 5: brand new and it's gonna be really cool and really
- 8:01Speaker 5: fun and really unique, or it's gonna be the same
- 8:04Speaker 5: old stuff. And the moment I finished Frogman, I text
- 8:08Speaker 5: Steve and I was like, fuck me, why did I
- 8:10Speaker 5: wait so long to watch this? I was like I
- 8:12Speaker 5: was having a blast.
- 8:14Speaker 3: Man, that's awesome. Thank you. Yeah. I'm very curious to
- 8:19Speaker 3: see how people that love the found footage aspect of
- 8:22Speaker 3: the first one react to the second one, because the
- 8:25Speaker 3: second movie is still found footage. But like, I just
- 8:28Speaker 3: rewatched it again a couple of days ago because we
- 8:31Speaker 3: just got the sound mix in, and there's a lot
- 8:34Speaker 3: of times where like I forget that it's a found
- 8:37Speaker 3: footage movie because it just in a lot of ways,
- 8:40Speaker 3: it just feels so much more cinematic than the first one.
- 8:44Speaker 3: And like, I mean we didn't I did want it
- 8:47Speaker 3: to feel more cinematic, but also like we didn't light it,
- 8:50Speaker 3: Like it's still like natural lighting. I you know, there's
- 8:54Speaker 3: like a couple of scenes where it would have been
- 8:56Speaker 3: pitch black if we want to put up a light,
- 8:58Speaker 3: but like nine five percent of the movie is not lit,
- 9:02Speaker 3: and it's still just looks so nice that you kind
- 9:05Speaker 3: of forget that. The camera's like, oh the cameras in world.
- 9:08Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah, Well it's a funny thing because it's like
- 9:13Speaker 5: found footage was originally based on this concept of like, oh,
- 9:16Speaker 5: we can fool the audience into thinking this is real
- 9:19Speaker 5: right now, the audience goes in knowing it's not. So now,
- 9:23Speaker 5: how do you how do you still make it effective
- 9:26Speaker 5: while understanding that the audience is in on the gag?
- 9:29Speaker 3: Yeah, And I think it's kind of I mean, if
- 9:32Speaker 3: you skew into the the aesthetic of found footage, like
- 9:38Speaker 3: we tried to with the first one, you're not pulling
- 9:40Speaker 3: the wool over anyone's eyes that it's maybe real, but
- 9:43Speaker 3: I do think there's still kind of like some something
- 9:47Speaker 3: going on with us mentally as viewers, where like it
- 9:50Speaker 3: does feel more real because of how it's presented. It's
- 9:53Speaker 3: like things can be a little scarier or a little
- 9:56Speaker 3: more believable because of the presentation.
- 10:00Speaker 5: Yeah, well, I think that's a big and Steve, I
- 10:02Speaker 5: know you're a big found footage guy. I think it
- 10:05Speaker 5: comes down to as cliche as it was say, it
- 10:08Speaker 5: comes down a character like we have to believe. Oh yeah,
- 10:10Speaker 5: people were watching are real. And I one hundred percent
- 10:14Speaker 5: believed it. And actually it was like getting you know,
- 10:17Speaker 5: ten minutes into the movie, once we're in modern time,
- 10:20Speaker 5: my brain wasn't thinking like, oh, I'm watching a found footage.
- 10:24Speaker 5: I just kind of fell in with the characters and
- 10:26Speaker 5: I was like, Oh, this is what it is.
- 10:28Speaker 4: It's a pretty immersive experience. I think that, like you know,
- 10:31Speaker 4: we were talking about the first forty minutes, but I
- 10:33Speaker 4: think it sets everything up for you to really get
- 10:35Speaker 4: attached to the characters. You kind of get an understanding
- 10:38Speaker 4: of like what exactly the scope of everything is. And
- 10:42Speaker 4: I think everything was I don't know, the flow of
- 10:44Speaker 4: it worked really well for the film, and especially because
- 10:48Speaker 4: I mean, Terror Vision rolled out the red carpet for
- 10:51Speaker 4: this release, which was just incredible. I was like, man,
- 10:53Speaker 4: never in a million years where I thought that we
- 10:55Speaker 4: would have gotten something so cool as you know, this
- 10:58Speaker 4: hard box right here, Like it's just gotta love it. Though.
- 11:02Speaker 3: Yeah, I had never in a million years would have
- 11:04Speaker 3: thought the movie we made would be packaged in something
- 11:07Speaker 3: that sexy. It's like a piece of art, you know, truly, Yeah,
- 11:12Speaker 3: it's Yeah, it's kind of weird that, Like I have
- 11:14Speaker 3: my own shit on display in my house and it's
- 11:16Speaker 3: not from like an egotistical places. Now that's awesome. Like
- 11:20Speaker 3: I love that art. And I mean when that when
- 11:22Speaker 3: the art dropped for that, I had noise like they
- 11:25Speaker 3: did that without telling me, I don't know. So when
- 11:28Speaker 3: I saw it, I was like just as stoked as
- 11:30Speaker 3: anyone else, like, oh, this is so cool.
- 11:32Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:33Speaker 5: And being at Walmart, when they do those the standard
- 11:38Speaker 5: editions at Walmart, it opens up so much more accessibility
- 11:42Speaker 5: to people for sure, just maybe like they missed it
- 11:45Speaker 5: on that initial limited round. They're not limited collectors and
- 11:48Speaker 5: they're not going to spend forty dollars on something, so
- 11:51Speaker 5: putting it on shelf for twenty Bucks still with a
- 11:54Speaker 5: slip cover with the bonus features it. People just want
- 11:58Speaker 5: to grab it. And when I saw it on shelves,
- 12:01Speaker 5: I was shocked because I didn't know it was going
- 12:02Speaker 5: to be at Walmart. I just happened to be there
- 12:04Speaker 5: and it was. But I can't imagine being a horror
- 12:08Speaker 5: fan not knowing where Frogman is and seeing that on
- 12:10Speaker 5: this shelf and being like, what the hell is that that?
- 12:15Speaker 3: That that cover art did a lot of work for us.
- 12:17Speaker 3: I think, yeah, so Easton Hawk just killed it, but
- 12:21Speaker 3: that he did. He did the deluxe cover also, Yeah,
- 12:24Speaker 3: I mean it's still it is still quite surreal to
- 12:27Speaker 3: me to walk into a Walmart and see our movie there,
- 12:30Speaker 3: because I mean, if you knew the budget, it's probably
- 12:34Speaker 3: the lowest budget movie to ever hit a Walmart shelf.
- 12:37Speaker 5: I would imagine, I don't know, man, you see some
- 12:40Speaker 5: of those DVD titles.
- 12:41Speaker 4: Man, you're not wrong. So, Anthony, I got to ask you, so,
- 12:48Speaker 4: what first drew you into the world of like cryptids
- 12:50Speaker 4: and specifically shaping the legend of the frog Man for
- 12:54Speaker 4: your film.
- 12:57Speaker 3: I mean, i'd like I remember, but like being in
- 12:59Speaker 3: high school, my parents both work nights, and I would
- 13:02Speaker 3: just have on Animal Planet, Discovery Channel, like like TLC,
- 13:07Speaker 3: all those weird channels. It would have like Bigfoot and
- 13:10Speaker 3: ghost Hunters and yeah, you know mysteries on ELAT.
- 13:13Speaker 6: I don't even remember the title of them.
- 13:14Speaker 3: Now there's a billion of them, but at the time
- 13:17Speaker 3: there was like a few, and they'd be on at
- 13:19Speaker 3: night on those channels, and I would just devour that stuff.
- 13:23Speaker 3: I thought it was so fun and you literally never
- 13:25Speaker 3: see anything, but you just you keep watching because you think,
- 13:30Speaker 3: maybe maybe this is the actually find a big Foot interesting. Yeah.
- 13:34Speaker 6: So, I mean, just as.
- 13:35Speaker 3: A horror fan and a monster fan, I've always loved cryptids.
- 13:39Speaker 3: It wasn't until finding about out about Frogman that I
- 13:42Speaker 3: kind of deep dived. And you know, most of us
- 13:46Speaker 3: are familiar with like the A list cryptids, Bigfoot, Chupacabra,
- 13:50Speaker 3: moth Man, Lockness, Monster, but then there's like the B
- 13:53Speaker 3: list and C list and D list cryptids. I'd say
- 13:57Speaker 3: Frogman he was maybe a D list cryptid when I
- 14:01Speaker 3: found him, and he's he's gathered a lot of love now,
- 14:03Speaker 3: so I think he's he's working his way up the ranks.
- 14:06Speaker 3: But I mean, there's a lot of really really weird
- 14:10Speaker 3: legends out there, and he's one of my personal favorites
- 14:14Speaker 3: because four foot frog with a wand I mean, it's
- 14:17Speaker 3: about as strange as it gets. All these other creatures
- 14:20Speaker 3: are like, yeah, maybe that was like a hairless dog
- 14:23Speaker 3: with rabies. You know, maybe that was a bear, you know,
- 14:28Speaker 3: maybe it was an owl. But it's like, what what
- 14:30Speaker 3: did these people see if they didn't see a bipedal
- 14:33Speaker 3: frog with a wand I mean, they're tripping balls. I'm like,
- 14:37Speaker 3: I don't know how you mistook that. So, yeah, I
- 14:44Speaker 3: found out about that Nate that plays Dallas. He's he's
- 14:48Speaker 3: a longtime friend and he uh well oftentimes, especially in
- 14:54Speaker 3: the summer, just like post tons of Instagram stories of
- 14:58Speaker 3: him running around the wood chasing deer, looking for deer,
- 15:03Speaker 3: like playing with the animals. He's like a something of
- 15:05Speaker 3: a snow white and uh and so I just thought
- 15:10Speaker 3: gotta be funny to just let him do this. But
- 15:13Speaker 3: instead of like chasing like a little baby deer, he's
- 15:17Speaker 3: looking for the frogman. And that was kind of the
- 15:21Speaker 3: That was the kernel that brought us to actually trying
- 15:23Speaker 3: to figure Okay, what's the story? Why is he?
- 15:25Speaker 6: You know?
- 15:26Speaker 3: And then I think pretty early on we were like, well,
- 15:28Speaker 3: what if when he was a kid he caught like
- 15:29Speaker 3: the Patterson Ginlm footage of Frogman, you know, and so
- 15:33Speaker 3: now it's become an obsession for him to like go
- 15:36Speaker 3: back and find the creature again. And then I think
- 15:39Speaker 3: soon after that, I kind of want to work the
- 15:42Speaker 3: shadowver ins Mouth into everything I can because it's like
- 15:46Speaker 3: one of my favorite stories. And so it was like, well,
- 15:48Speaker 3: what if there was a cult, you know, like there
- 15:50Speaker 3: get this kitchy, cryptid town like Point Pleasant or Roswell,
- 15:55Speaker 3: but yeah, underneath, like no, it's it's real and they're
- 15:58Speaker 3: kind of hiding in and playing sight that really it's
- 16:00Speaker 3: like a cult that worships him and it is like
- 16:02Speaker 3: breeding with him. Yeah, I think once we had those
- 16:05Speaker 3: couple of elements at all just kind of float flowed
- 16:08Speaker 3: pretty quickly for us.
- 16:10Speaker 5: Yeah. Well, I do want to say I admire the
- 16:13Speaker 5: subtlety of the flashback in the beginning or the original
- 16:15Speaker 5: footage when Frogman is found, because I feel like a
- 16:18Speaker 5: lot of times, uh, you know, it has to be
- 16:22Speaker 5: some large, extravagant scene, right Like I'm thinking like Silent Knight,
- 16:25Speaker 5: Deadly Night, where like parents have to get butchered to
- 16:28Speaker 5: cause this fear, this obsession, right, and Frogman it's as
- 16:31Speaker 5: simple as like he's just there, Like he's just there
- 16:34Speaker 5: in the woods. Nothing happens, he doesn't do anything, He's
- 16:38Speaker 5: just spotted. And then we come to modern times and
- 16:41Speaker 5: the obsession continues the extreme.
- 16:44Speaker 4: Really yeah, but but.
- 16:46Speaker 5: That first scene is like as subtle as it gets
- 16:49Speaker 5: like that, I feel like I feel like I could
- 16:51Speaker 5: have that could have happened to me when I was
- 16:53Speaker 5: a kid. I could have seen a weird tree. And
- 16:55Speaker 5: then like you know, became the subtlety of it.
- 16:58Speaker 3: You know, Yeah, that was kind of important to us.
- 17:01Speaker 3: You know, it needed to be I knew you weren't
- 17:04Speaker 3: going to see any you weren't going to see frog
- 17:06Speaker 3: Man until really late in the movie, you know, like
- 17:08Speaker 3: a good look at him. So it was like, well,
- 17:11Speaker 3: let's let's establish right off the bat, like there is
- 17:14Speaker 3: a frog Man. You're not watching this for nothing. But
- 17:18Speaker 3: it needed to be subtle enough that it maybe you know,
- 17:21Speaker 3: would have been as big as the Patterson Gimlin footage
- 17:23Speaker 3: but still debunkable.
- 17:26Speaker 6: Or like is that a big frogs that look?
- 17:29Speaker 3: You know?
- 17:31Speaker 6: So that was yeah, it was kind of a weird.
- 17:33Speaker 3: It was a weird day on set because it rightly
- 17:40Speaker 3: so just didn't didn't feel epic because he was just
- 17:44Speaker 3: standing there. I was like, I don't know, is this good.
- 17:48Speaker 5: Maybe it's a little I'll be honest with you, though
- 17:50Speaker 5: there was a little bit of like a like a
- 17:54Speaker 5: what's kind of not a letdown? It was a little
- 17:57Speaker 5: underwhelming the first time I saw him, but I feel
- 17:59Speaker 5: like it's disarming.
- 18:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:01Speaker 5: It made me kind of like, okay, so that's what
- 18:04Speaker 5: it is. And then when you do get to the
- 18:06Speaker 5: end and you see the scope of it, it brings
- 18:10Speaker 5: you back up. It sets it kind of doesn't set
- 18:13Speaker 5: low expectation, but you're like, it's just you're like, okay,
- 18:17Speaker 5: all right, let's see where this goes. And then the
- 18:18Speaker 5: ride starts and it just keeps getting better, you.
- 18:21Speaker 3: Know, right at least you don't know you know what
- 18:23Speaker 3: he's about, what he's capable of, like where it's really going.
- 18:26Speaker 3: And my hope is that like it you like you
- 18:29Speaker 3: saw the Frogman early on, which kind of keeps you like,
- 18:32Speaker 3: all right, I'm gonna see something at some point. And
- 18:34Speaker 3: then by the time Woody shows up and he's in
- 18:36Speaker 3: that fake Frogman suit, he's like, Frogman is not real, like,
- 18:40Speaker 3: you know, everyone for decades is just dressed up and
- 18:43Speaker 3: like ran around in the woods to play frog man.
- 18:46Speaker 3: I'm hoping that you've kind of forgotten what that first
- 18:49Speaker 3: footage looked like by the point that you get you
- 18:52Speaker 3: get to Woody in the woods and you're like, is
- 18:54Speaker 3: there a frog man? Like at that point where I
- 18:56Speaker 3: really want you to question, like maybe that one in
- 18:59Speaker 3: the beginning was this too, you know?
- 19:01Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 19:02Speaker 4: Yeah, Well I was going to ask because I know
- 19:05Speaker 4: we were touching on films earlier. Were there certain films
- 19:08Speaker 4: for you or maybe like even to a certain extent
- 19:11Speaker 4: Urban Legends growing up that fueled your fascination with cryptids
- 19:15Speaker 4: or even you know, shaping frogmen.
- 19:17Speaker 3: M I mean when it came to shaping frog Man,
- 19:22Speaker 3: I mean blair Witch Project I watched a lot. I
- 19:28Speaker 3: watched it like any anytime during production. If I started
- 19:31Speaker 3: to like kind of get some nerves about what we
- 19:34Speaker 3: were doing, I would rewatch Blair Witch Projects and just
- 19:36Speaker 3: be like, what what are we doing here? You know,
- 19:38Speaker 3: and like kind of like find that baseline again.
- 19:43Speaker 6: Digging Up the.
- 19:44Speaker 3: Marrow was one that we watched before we started the
- 19:48Speaker 3: script because I think that one did a great job
- 19:51Speaker 3: of doing fature effects in found footage, which is not
- 19:56Speaker 3: something you see often, like to see a whole creature.
- 20:01Speaker 3: And then Willow Creek was another one that we watched
- 20:04Speaker 3: before we started writing, because I think that's a fantastic
- 20:08Speaker 3: ENCRYPTI and Fountain footage movie.
- 20:11Speaker 5: Man Digging up the Marrow looked crazy.
- 20:13Speaker 6: Yeah, it's it's nuts.
- 20:15Speaker 3: Yeah. Adam Green that did the Hatchet series directed it.
- 20:18Speaker 3: Alex Party Uh designed the creatures. It's it's super fun.
- 20:25Speaker 3: And then, uh, what's his face? Oh? Man, I can't
- 20:28Speaker 3: live forgetting his name from Twin Peaks. Is is the
- 20:32Speaker 3: main character, and he's just fantastic. I love that guy.
- 20:35Speaker 5: Oh is it a put his name Kyle McFarlane, That.
- 20:38Speaker 3: Guy, Kyle MacLaughlin. It's not him, it's the guy he
- 20:42Speaker 3: plays Laura Palmer's dad, Ray Wise. Yeah, yeah, so's he's
- 20:47Speaker 3: this guy that's like seeing these creatures and like contacts
- 20:51Speaker 3: Adam Green. And Adam Green plays himself in the movie,
- 20:55Speaker 3: and and Ray why is his characters? Like, I know
- 20:57Speaker 3: there's real monsters that live outside my property at show
- 21:00Speaker 3: you where they are, you know, And Adam Green's like, oh,
- 21:03Speaker 3: we got to go see what this no case is
- 21:04Speaker 3: all about and then there are creatures.
- 21:06Speaker 6: It's super fun.
- 21:08Speaker 4: I gotta check that out. That sounds that sounds right
- 21:10Speaker 4: up my alley.
- 21:12Speaker 5: I'm still rooting for another Hatchet same, I'm sure.
- 21:16Speaker 3: Yeah, it's just a matter of time, although I wonder
- 21:18Speaker 3: at this point if we're entering like reboot territory.
- 21:22Speaker 6: It's been a while.
- 21:24Speaker 5: Yeah, and Victor Crowley wasn't exactually my favorite entry in
- 21:28Speaker 5: the franchise, and that's funny.
- 21:30Speaker 3: I mean, he was He was making those movies at
- 21:32Speaker 3: a time that like Slashers were having a pretty significant lull,
- 21:37Speaker 3: and Slashers are back probably in the strongest that they've
- 21:42Speaker 3: been since, like you know, Scream one and two came out.
- 21:45Speaker 3: So yeah, I kind of I kind of feel like
- 21:47Speaker 3: it's a great time for another Hatchet, but maybe you
- 21:49Speaker 3: got to make it accessible to people that don't know
- 21:53Speaker 3: that there's already four of them, you know.
- 21:55Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I know, Steve and I have We've always
- 21:58Speaker 5: preached like, as much as we digged Terrifier and that franchise,
- 22:02Speaker 5: people really have to go back and watch Hatchet to
- 22:04Speaker 5: kind of the inspiration came from for Terrifier, because.
- 22:08Speaker 4: Yeah, even on rewatch, going back and watching the Hatchet films.
- 22:12Speaker 4: I'm like, man, these these are like really really graphic,
- 22:15Speaker 4: especially for that time. I mean, I know you have
- 22:17Speaker 4: like a lot of like the like you know, Saw
- 22:20Speaker 4: and Hostle that were coming out maybe a couple of
- 22:22Speaker 4: years before then, but this definitely goes to the extreme.
- 22:26Speaker 4: And yeah, I mean Terrifier definitely feels like it's very
- 22:29Speaker 4: much in the same vein for sure.
- 22:31Speaker 5: Yeah, but terrifier though, there is not a single Terrifier
- 22:35Speaker 5: effect that levels up to that jaw oh no in
- 22:39Speaker 5: the first Hatchet and the the genius of spinning the
- 22:42Speaker 5: camera the back of the transition from the real to
- 22:45Speaker 5: the dummy to pull off the press. It's so good man.
- 22:48Speaker 5: Nothing beats that.
- 22:51Speaker 4: Uh Now, Anthony, do you remember the first horror film
- 22:53Speaker 4: that actually scared you?
- 22:59Speaker 3: I can't, you know one specifically. I watched horror films
- 23:03Speaker 3: very very young, and I do remember just being scared
- 23:08Speaker 3: shitless of the lady and the baptub in the Shining.
- 23:13Speaker 3: Oh So the point that I still like, if I
- 23:16Speaker 3: go into a bathroom and the curtain is bold clothes,
- 23:19Speaker 3: I will open it. Like it's just like embedded in
- 23:22Speaker 3: my system from when I was a kid. I'm like
- 23:24Speaker 3: as long as the curtains closed, I'm like, she might
- 23:26Speaker 3: be in there. Yeah, it's gotta be open. And then
- 23:32Speaker 3: Zelda from Pet Cemetery. I remember, like, you know, I
- 23:36Speaker 3: loved being scared as a kid, but like I could
- 23:39Speaker 3: be scared as a kid, Like it wasn't like things
- 23:41Speaker 3: didn't affect me, but nothing affected me as much as
- 23:45Speaker 3: when she would come on screen. And I remember even
- 23:48Speaker 3: like challenging myself, like on a summer day watching that
- 23:52Speaker 3: movie in the daylight, and like my living room that
- 23:55Speaker 3: I grew up and as a kid got a lot
- 23:56Speaker 3: of daylight. I was like, there's no way I'm gonna
- 23:58Speaker 3: get through the scene. She's gonna come on screen, and
- 24:00Speaker 3: I'm gonna keep watching.
- 24:02Speaker 6: I'm safe.
- 24:03Speaker 3: And like the second she got on screen, I like
- 24:05Speaker 3: rushed for the door and like like ran outside.
- 24:08Speaker 6: I just couldn't.
- 24:09Speaker 3: I cannot hangle her.
- 24:10Speaker 6: Just still freaking me out.
- 24:11Speaker 5: Now, Yeah, I just showed my sister, My sister's twenty
- 24:15Speaker 5: and I just showed her pet Cemetery for the first time.
- 24:18Speaker 5: And the first time you see Zelda when she's talking
- 24:21Speaker 5: about the story of her uh, you know, you get
- 24:23Speaker 5: a little my heart rate goes up a little bit.
- 24:25Speaker 5: But in the third act, when she's at the parents
- 24:29Speaker 5: house and she's walking towards the bedroom, I could just
- 24:32Speaker 5: slowly feel my heart rate build and build and build
- 24:36Speaker 5: in a voice. And I look over at my sister
- 24:38Speaker 5: and I'm like, that's scary shit, And she's like what
- 24:41Speaker 5: was that. I'm like like, all right, whatever, Yeah.
- 24:45Speaker 3: Yeah, you had to be traumatized as a kid maybe
- 24:47Speaker 3: for it to still affect you.
- 24:48Speaker 6: And it's like, I like that movie.
- 24:50Speaker 3: It's it's an it's an okay movie, it's at but
- 24:53Speaker 3: that is like an absolutely masterful piece of like fear
- 24:59Speaker 3: inducing cinema. I don't know how they did it. I
- 25:02Speaker 3: mean even just hearing her voice freaks me out.
- 25:05Speaker 5: Oh yeah, that's I think that's probably the most. I
- 25:09Speaker 5: think when anybody talks about pet cemetery, they talk about Zelda.
- 25:11Speaker 5: Nobody talks about Gage getting wrecked by an eighteen wheeler. Yeah,
- 25:16Speaker 5: everyone talks about Zelda.
- 25:18Speaker 6: Yeah, kind of steals the show.
- 25:22Speaker 4: Now. Was Frogman always the project that you wanted to
- 25:26Speaker 4: direct or did it evolve from other ideas like in
- 25:29Speaker 4: pre production?
- 25:31Speaker 6: I think I was always going to direct it.
- 25:33Speaker 3: It did come at a time when I was trying
- 25:36Speaker 3: to get something else off the ground. I was trying
- 25:40Speaker 3: to get a few things off the ground, and one
- 25:42Speaker 3: seemed like it was really going to go, and it's
- 25:44Speaker 3: just like, we have funding, and then we wouldn't, and
- 25:47Speaker 3: we would and then we wouldn't, and then COVID hit
- 25:51Speaker 3: and it was just like, oh my god. I was
- 25:53Speaker 3: like when twenty twenty started, I was like, this is
- 25:56Speaker 3: the year I'm making a feature, Like I'm gonna do it,
- 26:00Speaker 3: and then COVID hit. I was just like, man, what
- 26:02Speaker 3: is going on? So break So we like kind of
- 26:06Speaker 3: while we were in lockdown, we're like, all right, let's
- 26:07Speaker 3: finish the Frogman script. We could make Frogman for twenty
- 26:11Speaker 3: k if we got to put twenty k on a
- 26:13Speaker 3: credit card, Like, we can make this movie for whatever
- 26:15Speaker 3: we can raise. And so we kind of got the
- 26:19Speaker 3: ball rolling with that mindset of like we're making this
- 26:22Speaker 3: no matter what, because we just didn't have any other
- 26:25Speaker 3: scripts that were doable at like a zero budget number.
- 26:31Speaker 3: And then yeah, twenty twenty one rolls around and people
- 26:35Speaker 3: find out what we're up to and kind of believe
- 26:37Speaker 3: in it. So we did raise some money and then
- 26:40Speaker 3: shot in the follow twenty twenty one.
- 26:43Speaker 4: Oh that's awesome. Yeah, and oh go ahead.
- 26:46Speaker 5: No, I was just gonna say I was going through
- 26:50Speaker 5: IMDb and just kind of looking at some of the
- 26:53Speaker 5: projects that you've been a part of and various things,
- 26:57Speaker 5: and I'm getting really stoked to see some up in
- 27:00Speaker 5: here that I really really love. Well, one is I
- 27:04Speaker 5: think you did some work on Shelby Oaks, which is
- 27:06Speaker 5: gonna get a ton of press right now.
- 27:08Speaker 4: Yeah, I was.
- 27:09Speaker 3: I was a grip on that I gripped when I'm
- 27:10Speaker 3: not directing, which if you don't know what that is,
- 27:13Speaker 3: it's like part of the camera and lighting teams.
- 27:15Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 27:16Speaker 5: Cool. But you also gripped on a movie that I
- 27:19Speaker 5: feel is incredibly underrated, which is The Stylist. Oh yeah, dude,
- 27:25Speaker 5: that movie is awesome, dude. And I was really shocked
- 27:28Speaker 5: when I did see it for the first time and
- 27:29Speaker 5: I went on letterbox and people were pretty negative about it.
- 27:33Speaker 5: I was like, do we watch different different movies?
- 27:35Speaker 4: Do we?
- 27:37Speaker 6: Yeah, it's so good.
- 27:39Speaker 3: Yeah. I met Jill in twenty sixteen on the festival circuit.
- 27:42Speaker 3: She had the style of short film at the same
- 27:45Speaker 3: time that I had a short that I made, And yeah,
- 27:49Speaker 3: when she posted that she was making a feature, I
- 27:51Speaker 3: was like yo, you know, like she was in Kansas City,
- 27:55Speaker 3: I was in Minnesota, pretty you know, it's like a
- 27:57Speaker 3: six hour drive. I was like, I'll come down and
- 28:00Speaker 3: work on this, like for whatever, because at the time
- 28:03Speaker 3: I'd been gripping on a bunch of features and nothing
- 28:07Speaker 3: that turned out to the point that I'd even watch
- 28:10Speaker 3: it out of curiosity, just like not good movies, and
- 28:14Speaker 3: I was like, I just really want to work on
- 28:15Speaker 3: something that I believe in, you know, that I think
- 28:18Speaker 3: could actually be good. And it's to this day probably
- 28:21Speaker 3: the best experience I've ever had on setlist of stylist.
- 28:24Speaker 3: It was so much fun.
- 28:26Speaker 5: Yeah, that's a great see Have you ever seen that
- 28:28Speaker 5: I haven't. Yeah, so Erro put out a great blu
- 28:30Speaker 5: ray of it a couple of years ago. Now it's
- 28:34Speaker 5: really good, man. It's a really good story of kind
- 28:38Speaker 5: of obsession and identity crisis. And it starts it starts
- 28:44Speaker 5: one way, and then the movie kind of bleeds into
- 28:46Speaker 5: something different as it goes along, and it's got a
- 28:48Speaker 5: great like visual do it as well. It's really fun, man.
- 28:53Speaker 5: You should definitely definitely check it out. I'll send it
- 28:55Speaker 5: to you.
- 28:55Speaker 4: I'm always looking for new movies to watch, so you
- 28:57Speaker 4: guys have already given me at least a couple to
- 28:59Speaker 4: add to my watch list.
- 29:01Speaker 3: But if Leatherface was a hairstylist.
- 29:04Speaker 5: That's kind of oh, it's pretty good, okay, okay, yeah, yeah,
- 29:08Speaker 5: that's pretty good, and also like beautiful, if leather Face
- 29:11Speaker 5: was beautiful, like an actual pretty lady, not pretty lady mask.
- 29:15Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, yeah, we're trying to say about Leatherface, but
- 29:20Speaker 4: he puts the pretty lady mask on. Yeah, right, come on,
- 29:22Speaker 4: doesn't that count? It's the fort the count right now, Anthony,
- 29:27Speaker 4: how did you initially land on the location where Frogman
- 29:30Speaker 4: was going to be shot?
- 29:31Speaker 3: Initially? Well, it takes place in Loveland, Ohio, which is
- 29:36Speaker 3: where the legend actually is. There's been sightings there since
- 29:42Speaker 3: like nineteen fifty five, so even like pre dating Mothman.
- 29:48Speaker 3: But yeah, I really wanted to at least visit there
- 29:53Speaker 3: before we shot, but I couldn't make it happened, So
- 29:55Speaker 3: we I mean we shot in Stillwater, Minnesota, which is
- 30:00Speaker 3: just about a thirty forty minute drive from Minneapolis, where
- 30:02Speaker 3: I grew up and where I was living at the time,
- 30:04Speaker 3: So I mean.
- 30:05Speaker 6: That was just kind of financially that's where my entire
- 30:09Speaker 6: team was.
- 30:09Speaker 3: That's where I was. That's what made the most sense. Yeah,
- 30:13Speaker 3: and thankfully, like we you know, there's a Frogman festival
- 30:16Speaker 3: in Loveon, Ohio that we got to bring the movie
- 30:19Speaker 3: the following year, and everyone that were Ohio locals were
- 30:25Speaker 3: very impressed with how we did the town justice. Without
- 30:29Speaker 3: ever visiting, you know, I did look up like Google
- 30:32Speaker 3: photos of it, and I was like, yeah, I mean
- 30:35Speaker 3: it's a small town. It's got a little cute little
- 30:37Speaker 3: main street. It's it's on a river. It looks like Stowater,
- 30:40Speaker 3: Minnesota to me. And yeah, we fooled some people that
- 30:44Speaker 3: are even from Ohio.
- 30:45Speaker 6: So that's that's great.
- 30:46Speaker 3: Worked out.
- 30:46Speaker 5: Yeah, that's cool.
- 30:49Speaker 4: Now did the real environment influence the story? Always didn't
- 30:53Speaker 4: expect when you guys were filming then the real environment
- 30:56Speaker 4: that we were shooting in. Yeah, Like, were there any
- 31:01Speaker 4: challenges that you guys had during filming or anything along
- 31:04Speaker 4: those lines.
- 31:05Speaker 3: Oh my god, yeah, so many. I mean we just
- 31:10Speaker 3: we worked with what we had, man. I mean, like
- 31:13Speaker 3: the shots of us walking around were really just like
- 31:16Speaker 3: us walking around that town without telling anyone we were
- 31:19Speaker 3: gonna do it. You know, it was a very small
- 31:20Speaker 3: crew and we were shooting on a handicamp, so no
- 31:22Speaker 3: one thought we were up to anything too strange, Like the.
- 31:28Speaker 5: Ice cream Was that an actress at the ice cream barlor?
- 31:30Speaker 3: No, No, that's just that's a real girl that really
- 31:34Speaker 3: has that theory about frogs and rats.
- 31:36Speaker 6: And I don't know. I wasn't even there for that.
- 31:40Speaker 3: I literally just like we gave the camera to the
- 31:43Speaker 3: trio and I was just like, just wander around town,
- 31:46Speaker 3: like you just got here and you're kind of getting
- 31:47Speaker 3: the lay of the land and you're having fun. And
- 31:49Speaker 3: they decided to get ice cream, and then they came
- 31:51Speaker 3: back and they're like, yo, you got to see what
- 31:53Speaker 3: we got.
- 31:54Speaker 6: We gotta go get a release for him from this
- 31:56Speaker 6: ice cream girl.
- 31:59Speaker 3: That was so fun.
- 32:00Speaker 4: But yeah, that makes it so much better.
- 32:03Speaker 3: Like the airbeat or the bed and breakfast room that
- 32:08Speaker 3: they're partying in and staying in. That's my parents' bedroom.
- 32:11Speaker 3: Like I mean we just yeah, shot in shot in
- 32:15Speaker 3: my backyard for some stuff. I mean, we didn't have
- 32:19Speaker 3: a whole lot to work with on that first one.
- 32:21Speaker 5: Where did you shoot the store?
- 32:22Speaker 3: Did you like the gift shop? Yeah?
- 32:26Speaker 6: So there was like a little kitchy gift shop in
- 32:29Speaker 6: still Water.
- 32:32Speaker 3: And you know, here's the pros and cons of shooting
- 32:35Speaker 3: somewhere where things never get shot. Is you go into
- 32:38Speaker 3: a place and you're like, hey, we're making a movie,
- 32:39Speaker 3: you know, we like to shoot in here for like
- 32:41Speaker 3: an hour, you know, whatever amount of time, and they're
- 32:43Speaker 3: so excited and they don't want to charge you a
- 32:45Speaker 3: dime and they're like, oh my god, so cool. Yeah
- 32:47Speaker 3: for sure. And then you show up the day and
- 32:50Speaker 3: they see what you're doing and they're immediately not about it.
- 32:53Speaker 3: They want their like, just do this as quick as
- 32:56Speaker 3: you can and get out of here, because you bring
- 32:58Speaker 3: more people than they expect. Yeah, it's just it's more
- 33:01Speaker 3: than they realized they signed up for. It happens damn
- 33:04Speaker 3: near every time unless someone's super chill, and it happened
- 33:08Speaker 3: with that place because we're just like, hey, you know,
- 33:10Speaker 3: we're not going to like mess anything up. We've got
- 33:12Speaker 3: our own h like props that we're going to bring
- 33:15Speaker 3: in and just like put on the in front of
- 33:17Speaker 3: things and we'll put everything back the way we found
- 33:19Speaker 3: it will be in your in and out in sixty minutes.
- 33:22Speaker 3: And yeah, when we've showed up that day, they're like, ugh,
- 33:27Speaker 3: we man, Yeah, I guess we said yes to this,
- 33:29Speaker 3: fine damn but yeah, yeah, like what are we what
- 33:35Speaker 3: are we doing here? But I mean we got what
- 33:37Speaker 3: we needed.
- 33:39Speaker 5: It makes me think of it makes me think of
- 33:41Speaker 5: the beginning of act, you know, when they show up
- 33:43Speaker 5: into Old Man's like, oh, this is what you're doing here?
- 33:47Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 33:49Speaker 4: Now, was there like a very first image or scene
- 33:53Speaker 4: a frogman that you knew you wanted to capture on
- 33:56Speaker 4: film prior to like starting filming.
- 34:02Speaker 3: I think I think the strongest image in my head
- 34:06Speaker 3: is funny enough one that didn't make the movie, which
- 34:09Speaker 3: is I've pictured the like the chase scene where he
- 34:15Speaker 3: finally shows up about yeah, like fifty minutes in and
- 34:19Speaker 3: starts chasing them through the woods. I was picturing like
- 34:22Speaker 3: I didn't know how the hell we were gonna do it.
- 34:24Speaker 3: But also he's gonna be like leaping on all fours,
- 34:26Speaker 3: so he's gonna be like hopping like a frog, and
- 34:28Speaker 3: then like the camera's gonna whip around and see him
- 34:30Speaker 3: hopping towards camera, and then and they's gonna hop in
- 34:32Speaker 3: the sky, and then the camera's gonna whip up and
- 34:35Speaker 3: he's gonna hop from one tree to another, like he's
- 34:37Speaker 3: like tracking them from up high like predator or something,
- 34:41Speaker 3: and uh, we couldn't do that.
- 34:43Speaker 4: Oh man, I mean like I can, I can. I
- 34:46Speaker 4: can envision it, like when you're describing it, I can
- 34:49Speaker 4: envision it. But yeah, I mean, like I'm sure that
- 34:52Speaker 4: there was like certain constraints with like how much you
- 34:54Speaker 4: could you know, get away with you know, Yeah, I mean.
- 34:57Speaker 3: That that suit was pretty limiting, and it would have
- 35:00Speaker 3: been even if the suit wasn't limiting, that that would
- 35:03Speaker 3: have been asking a lot of a performer. And then
- 35:05Speaker 3: so we tried to do it with VFX and it
- 35:08Speaker 3: just looks so silly. And I actually I hit a
- 35:11Speaker 3: point where I was like, God, I don't know how
- 35:13Speaker 3: to make this scene cool. I don't know. My plan
- 35:17Speaker 3: didn't work out at all. I'm not sure what the
- 35:19Speaker 3: alternative is. And then I went and saw ET was
- 35:24Speaker 3: playing at a theater in Minneapolis and watching ET like
- 35:29Speaker 3: that opening scene where like he's he's running around the woods,
- 35:32Speaker 3: you know, but all you see is like bushes moving,
- 35:35Speaker 3: you know, and then you might see a little bit
- 35:36Speaker 3: of a light, or you might see like the top
- 35:38Speaker 3: of his head or some hands or something. And I remembered,
- 35:41Speaker 3: like when I was a kid, and they released that
- 35:45Speaker 3: like reprise version where he's VFX and he's bopping around,
- 35:48Speaker 3: you know, and we were all like, oh, what you do?
- 35:52Speaker 3: You know, And then that's when I realized, like, oh,
- 35:54Speaker 3: how do we just do this with frogmen? You know?
- 35:57Speaker 3: It's like how about were running through the woods and
- 35:59Speaker 3: then the camera whips and you just see a bush
- 36:01Speaker 3: move like oh, he was just there, you know. And
- 36:02Speaker 3: then we're running through the woods again, and then we
- 36:04Speaker 3: whip again and he's just there, like perched on the tree,
- 36:07Speaker 3: and then we whip away and you hear him jump.
- 36:10Speaker 3: So I really have Spielberg and et to thank for
- 36:13Speaker 3: how we figured out how to do that.
- 36:14Speaker 4: So it's it's almost like less as more exactly.
- 36:17Speaker 5: Yeah, that's the genius of it, though, because your imagination
- 36:22Speaker 5: does so much more than anything else. And I think
- 36:25Speaker 5: that's the problem with so just in example, in found
- 36:29Speaker 5: footage Adam Win guards Blair Witch, I think falls victim
- 36:33Speaker 5: of showing too much, like you've now given me everything.
- 36:36Speaker 5: There's nothing left to the imagination, and I'm instantly detached
- 36:41Speaker 5: because of that. And there's always this problem too, having
- 36:45Speaker 5: to fill in information that nobody asked for. You know what,
- 36:49Speaker 5: I mean, like I saw blair Witch when it was over.
- 36:52Speaker 5: I never I never, in you know, the twenty six
- 36:56Speaker 5: years said I wonder, I wonder what that looked like.
- 37:00Speaker 5: I never cared. Yeah, I didn't need you to show
- 37:02Speaker 5: it to me. And then when you do show it
- 37:04Speaker 5: to me, it's cgi I'm like, Okay, that's not what
- 37:08Speaker 5: I you know, No, no.
- 37:10Speaker 3: I mean that's I think that's why it's so hard
- 37:13Speaker 3: to make a good blair Witch movie. Yeah, because the
- 37:16Speaker 3: first one is so incredibly simple, and when you try
- 37:21Speaker 3: to like over engineer that or you try to add
- 37:24Speaker 3: more to that, you're just kind of like diluting the
- 37:27Speaker 3: what made it work so well. I feel the same
- 37:29Speaker 3: way about Halloween. Like I like Halloween one through three.
- 37:34Speaker 3: I mean three doesn't even it's a completely standalone movies.
- 37:37Speaker 3: So I mean it's really like Halloween one and two
- 37:38Speaker 3: are the only ones I truly like, and I like
- 37:40Speaker 3: the idea of h two. Oh yeah, and for the
- 37:44Speaker 3: most part I enjoy it, but I don't think it's
- 37:45Speaker 3: a great movie. But that whole series just doesn't work
- 37:48Speaker 3: for me because it's the first one is such an
- 37:52Speaker 3: unbelievably simple idea, and like, the more you try to
- 37:55Speaker 3: explain where he comes from and see him more, and
- 37:58Speaker 3: like there's just a whole lot of places you can
- 38:01Speaker 3: go go with it. And to that extent like that,
- 38:05Speaker 3: like I see Frogmen returns as kind of like we
- 38:08Speaker 3: almost took like the Evil Dead two approach, where it's
- 38:12Speaker 3: such a different movie, and I mean it's a continuation,
- 38:15Speaker 3: same characters, same actors. It's truly a sequel, but it's
- 38:20Speaker 3: such a different tone that.
- 38:24Speaker 6: I hope it doesn't ruin.
- 38:26Speaker 3: How people feel about the first movie, because I just like, yeah,
- 38:29Speaker 3: I mean, if we tried to make a sequel that
- 38:31Speaker 3: was too true to the tone of the first movie,
- 38:34Speaker 3: I don't know what we would have done except kind
- 38:37Speaker 3: of like copy it, you know, like all right, we
- 38:42Speaker 3: already teased.
- 38:42Speaker 6: Frogman and then showed him a little bit.
- 38:44Speaker 3: You know. It's like, I mean, do we do that again,
- 38:46Speaker 3: you know, so we kind of go big and crazy.
- 38:50Speaker 5: Well I think that that when I saw the news
- 38:53Speaker 5: of well, after I saw frog Man and I saw
- 38:56Speaker 5: the news about the sequel, there was kind of a
- 38:58Speaker 5: moment where I was like, like, I hope it's not
- 39:03Speaker 5: going in the direction that I would typically think a
- 39:06Speaker 5: sequel would go, Like Okay, we're going to show more,
- 39:08Speaker 5: We're going to go in the backstory, We're going to
- 39:11Speaker 5: open up all these doors. I was because I kind
- 39:13Speaker 5: of had a moment where I was like, I don't
- 39:14Speaker 5: really need much more than what I was given, you know,
- 39:19Speaker 5: And I think people forget that you can do the
- 39:22Speaker 5: Evil Dead to SQL move. It doesn't have to be
- 39:25Speaker 5: a direct sequel. You can go back and kind of
- 39:31Speaker 5: change it up drastically and do different things and still
- 39:34Speaker 5: be in spirit and not reveal more or give more
- 39:38Speaker 5: away or kind of just fill in the time. So
- 39:41Speaker 5: hearing you say that makes me even more excited to
- 39:44Speaker 5: see for sure what the sequel is going to do.
- 39:48Speaker 4: Now. Were there any unplanned moments during filming that you
- 39:51Speaker 4: feel like made the film stronger?
- 39:56Speaker 3: I know, pretty much all my favorite moments because like
- 40:01Speaker 3: I can launch that movie, and obviously we didn't shoot chronologically,
- 40:04Speaker 3: so like you know, early on in the movie is
- 40:07Speaker 3: like a scene like ice Cream Girl, and then later
- 40:10Speaker 3: on the movie is like something that we shot, you know,
- 40:12Speaker 3: within the first couple of days of shooting. And to me,
- 40:15Speaker 3: I can always tell like the stuff that was like
- 40:18Speaker 3: improv or that we had very little to go off of,
- 40:21Speaker 3: it is where I think they're their strongest because they're
- 40:24Speaker 3: not just like memorizing lines. So those are some of
- 40:28Speaker 3: my favorite moments. And a lot of that came in
- 40:30Speaker 3: the Pickups because we ended up shooting like a good
- 40:33Speaker 3: chunk of the third act and it just didn't work
- 40:36Speaker 3: like I think it worked at written, and then we
- 40:38Speaker 3: started to shoot it and it was like, ooh, this
- 40:40Speaker 3: is thrown off the vibe, like the Woody character kind
- 40:44Speaker 3: of came along for the entire ride, like he leads
- 40:47Speaker 3: him into the woods, and it totally threw off like
- 40:50Speaker 3: the dynamic of the trio. So we shot stuff like
- 40:54Speaker 3: that and then had to had to rewrite it. And
- 40:56Speaker 3: so when we came back to shoot a bunch of pickups,
- 41:00Speaker 3: I just wrote scenes like, Okay, you're sitting outside George
- 41:04Speaker 3: George Hale's house, Dallas. You're not gonna take no for
- 41:07Speaker 3: an answer. You're going into the woods.
- 41:09Speaker 6: Chelsea.
- 41:10Speaker 3: You're eventually going to like agree to go into the woods,
- 41:13Speaker 3: but you're you're fighting hard not to. And that's one
- 41:16Speaker 3: of my favorite scenes in the movie, and it's because
- 41:18Speaker 3: we didn't have anything written for that. They just knew
- 41:21Speaker 3: where they were starting and where they had to get
- 41:24Speaker 3: to before.
- 41:24Speaker 5: The end of the scene, you know, yeah, yeah, Well,
- 41:27Speaker 5: one thing I really admired from a character sense is
- 41:29Speaker 5: what's brought up between Dallas and Amy, and I like
- 41:34Speaker 5: that it's not fully fleshed out or like fully explored
- 41:38Speaker 5: with like a conclusive character rap ab of it because
- 41:41Speaker 5: it feels real, like, you know, there's history here and
- 41:44Speaker 5: it's brought up, and it affects the relationship with the trio,
- 41:49Speaker 5: both positively and negatively because you can, like me personally,
- 41:52Speaker 5: I can see the the on screen energy between the
- 41:55Speaker 5: two of them, like I feel it, and then when
- 41:57Speaker 5: she gets into character and that it's that weird like
- 42:00Speaker 5: cowgirl southern and you can kind of see like Dallas's
- 42:04Speaker 5: annoyance towards that. It kind of gives that real life bickering,
- 42:10Speaker 5: and it just made them feel more real that there's
- 42:12Speaker 5: history that I'm not being vomited onto about. You know,
- 42:17Speaker 5: it just brings it shows up here, shows up there.
- 42:19Speaker 5: There's that moment in the bedroom, you know, where it's
- 42:22Speaker 5: kind of explored a little bit more. But then like
- 42:24Speaker 5: that's kind of it for the most part, and the
- 42:28Speaker 5: rest of that comes out in how they act towards
- 42:31Speaker 5: each other.
- 42:31Speaker 4: And I really admire that it's more organic.
- 42:33Speaker 6: I feel like, yeah, I mean, that's another.
- 42:38Speaker 3: Funny thing that we had to like refine when we
- 42:41Speaker 3: came back and did reshoots and we're in editing, because
- 42:45Speaker 3: I feel the same way you guys do, Like I
- 42:47Speaker 3: can pick up the subtext of a movie, you know,
- 42:50Speaker 3: don't spell it out for me, you know. But then
- 42:53Speaker 3: funny enough, oftentimes when we're making a movie, we still
- 42:58Speaker 3: will like over explain and and have like too much,
- 43:04Speaker 3: too much like spelled out, and and it's just funny
- 43:07Speaker 3: because we're coming from places like we don't want to
- 43:09Speaker 3: be treated like that as an audience member. But then
- 43:11Speaker 3: as filmmakers were like, I don't know if anyone's gonna
- 43:14Speaker 3: get it if we don't over explain it. So then
- 43:17Speaker 3: you know, and editing, god, we I mean, in the
- 43:20Speaker 3: original like so much is explained. There's like like multiple
- 43:24Speaker 3: more scenes with thousand Amy kind of getting into their relationship. Uh,
- 43:29Speaker 3: there's a more explanation of like Frogman's backstory and like
- 43:33Speaker 3: all this other stuff, and and it was just like, oh,
- 43:36Speaker 3: this is all slowing the movie down, like you so
- 43:40Speaker 3: so a big part of like getting to the final
- 43:42Speaker 3: product was just stripping away a lot of that exposition.
- 43:47Speaker 5: Yeah, we need to release the over explained cut.
- 43:51Speaker 6: Man, I'm too embarrassed.
- 43:55Speaker 3: I do. If if you watch the special Future as
- 43:57Speaker 3: we go over a lot of it, there's like, yeah,
- 44:00Speaker 3: Sean and I are my co writer, like we talk
- 44:02Speaker 3: about all the paths not taken in the in the
- 44:07Speaker 3: screen write in the phase.
- 44:08Speaker 5: It's like, there's like one hundred and forty minute long
- 44:10Speaker 5: cut of Frogman out there somewhere, dude.
- 44:12Speaker 3: The first I mean the first cut was I got
- 44:15Speaker 3: damn near two hours. I think, oh no, it is
- 44:18Speaker 3: not not good. You don't want to see that.
- 44:22Speaker 5: Well, I think that's for the best. I'm part of
- 44:25Speaker 5: the crowd that loves long movies, but when it comes
- 44:27Speaker 5: to horror, I'm like, give me ninety minutes or less,
- 44:29Speaker 5: you know what I mean.
- 44:31Speaker 3: So yeah, prog Me Returns is even shorter. Our script
- 44:35Speaker 3: was only seventy six pages or something like that. I
- 44:39Speaker 3: was like, I think we'll get to eighty minutes if we,
- 44:42Speaker 3: you know, kind of melt this, and it's like just
- 44:44Speaker 3: under eighty minutes.
- 44:45Speaker 5: Man's it's such a breath of fresh air when when
- 44:48Speaker 5: Terrified to was two hours and thirty five minutes, or
- 44:51Speaker 5: some shit. But movies now do feel like new horror movies.
- 44:55Speaker 5: When I see that they're an hour and fifty minutes,
- 44:58Speaker 5: I'm like, where did you pull this out of your ass?
- 45:01Speaker 5: At like yeah, and then you're watching it and you're like, no, wonder,
- 45:04Speaker 5: this's an hour of fifteen minutes, Like oh my, it's
- 45:06Speaker 5: like Smile Too? Why is Smile Too?
- 45:08Speaker 3: Over?
- 45:08Speaker 5: Two hours long?
- 45:10Speaker 3: Insane and a great movie. I enjoyed the hell out
- 45:13Speaker 3: of it, But I think you could easily cut that down. Yeah,
- 45:16Speaker 3: I don't know. Yeah, sure, I'm sure. I'd love to
- 45:18Speaker 3: make a long movie. It's I love long movies, Like
- 45:21Speaker 3: I can't wait to go see uh one battle after another,
- 45:24Speaker 3: just knowing it's almost three hours. It's like it's when
- 45:27Speaker 3: you sit down and you know that's what you're signing
- 45:29Speaker 3: up for. It's kind of like, yo, you got me
- 45:31Speaker 3: for the day. Let's yeah, you know, But I don't know.
- 45:33Speaker 3: I mean the other aspect of it is when we're
- 45:36Speaker 3: working at low budgets, I'm like, the shorter the script,
- 45:40Speaker 3: the more effort we can put into what is there,
- 45:44Speaker 3: you know, the longer the script at the certain budgetary
- 45:47Speaker 3: level that we're at, the more you're spreading thin your resources,
- 45:50Speaker 3: you know. I mean, we shot the second movie in
- 45:52Speaker 3: ten days. We couldn't do that if the script was
- 45:55Speaker 3: any longer. Yeah. Sure.
- 45:57Speaker 5: Well it's funny when it comes to length because so
- 46:00Speaker 5: when it comes to streaming, the only streaming platform I
- 46:03Speaker 5: love is Criterion Channel, and for their October slate, they
- 46:07Speaker 5: just released a whole John Wu collection, So I'm going
- 46:11Speaker 5: through that. So last night I watched The Killer from
- 46:14Speaker 5: nineteen eighty nine and I'm like, okay, hour and fifty
- 46:17Speaker 5: one minutes, and then I get halfway through and I'm like,
- 46:21Speaker 5: an hour of this is just slow motion people getting shot,
- 46:25Speaker 5: and I was there for it. Like actually, when it
- 46:27Speaker 5: was over, I was like I could have taken like
- 46:28Speaker 5: another thirty minutes of that. It's funny how we excuse
- 46:32Speaker 5: more time for certain things, you know what I mean,
- 46:34Speaker 5: and then we want less of other I I don't
- 46:37Speaker 5: want to be felt. I don't want to feel dragged along.
- 46:41Speaker 5: If your story supports, you know, if one battle after
- 46:45Speaker 5: another supports two hours and forty five minutes, I'm all
- 46:48Speaker 5: for it. Like when when Ridley Scott puts out a
- 46:51Speaker 5: three hour director's cut, the story typically supports that. When
- 46:57Speaker 5: you have thirty minutes of stuff that doesn't count in
- 47:02Speaker 5: the ending, it doesn't add anything more. That's when I
- 47:06Speaker 5: think you really feel the weight.
- 47:08Speaker 6: Of that exactly. Yeah, I totally agree.
- 47:11Speaker 3: I mean so much of it is pacing. It really
- 47:13Speaker 3: like boils down to that, and when it is just
- 47:17Speaker 3: like filler and it's not pushing the story forward and
- 47:20Speaker 3: like the characters aren't developing through these filler scenes, and
- 47:24Speaker 3: it does, like you start to feel that a lot time.
- 47:27Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, you know who. I think did that really
- 47:29Speaker 5: well the substance. That's a little over two hours, but
- 47:34Speaker 5: it did such a good job. Like there's all those
- 47:37Speaker 5: moments when Demi Moore is walking to pick up her
- 47:39Speaker 5: next dosing, and I think the first time it's like
- 47:42Speaker 5: on a steady cam. The second time it's a little shakier,
- 47:46Speaker 5: the third it gets a little shakier, and then I
- 47:48Speaker 5: think the last time that she goes, it's like you
- 47:51Speaker 5: can barely track what's happening. The camera's like all over
- 47:54Speaker 5: And those are such subtle visual notes to the audience
- 47:59Speaker 5: of something in pend and building, yeah, and driving that
- 48:03Speaker 5: pace forward. And I think that's the difference between understanding
- 48:08Speaker 5: pacing as as a director and then understanding audience and
- 48:12Speaker 5: not you know, you.
- 48:13Speaker 3: Know what I mean totally.
- 48:14Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 48:15Speaker 3: I saw The Substance three or four times in the theater.
- 48:18Speaker 3: I fucking love that movie, and there's like, there's really
- 48:21Speaker 3: not an ounce of fat on it. I mean, every
- 48:22Speaker 3: scene is necessary. The only scene that I start to
- 48:26Speaker 3: check out in mildly on rewatches is the fight, and
- 48:32Speaker 3: it's all great, it's bad ass. When I was like,
- 48:34Speaker 3: this goes on for so long.
- 48:38Speaker 5: Yeah, in the apartment right between then and marker quality
- 48:41Speaker 5: right down.
- 48:42Speaker 3: Yeah, it be in the snot out of each other.
- 48:44Speaker 3: It's like, holy shit, I would maybe get the last
- 48:47Speaker 3: thirty seconds out of this, I.
- 48:49Speaker 4: Was gonna say. I mean, that's a movie that I
- 48:50Speaker 4: feel like is very purposeful with the run time, like
- 48:53Speaker 4: it like you're saying, it doesn't feel like that there's
- 48:55Speaker 4: a lot of fat on that movie, Whereas what Chris
- 48:58Speaker 4: was saying, I mean, there's some horror films where it's
- 49:00Speaker 4: like a slog to get through. It's like, I feel
- 49:03Speaker 4: like you could have trimmed some of this down to
- 49:05Speaker 4: probably have a better finished product in the long run.
- 49:08Speaker 5: Well, I do believe that some movies are designed to
- 49:11Speaker 5: be like Endurance tests. It's almost a challenge of like
- 49:14Speaker 5: how long can you hang on? And that's what the
- 49:16Speaker 5: substance does so well, it knows it's long, and it
- 49:20Speaker 5: knows it's getting really challenging in parts, and as an
- 49:23Speaker 5: audience member, it's asking you like, hey, hang on, like
- 49:25Speaker 5: let's keep grip, like we're gonna keep grabbing harder and
- 49:29Speaker 5: harder and harder. And then when you reach the end
- 49:31Speaker 5: and you have the monster, it the payoffs, it's insane,
- 49:35Speaker 5: so fucking nuts. You're like everything before it was worth
- 49:40Speaker 5: getting through to get to that. And it's so funny
- 49:43Speaker 5: how that's the moment that divided everybody.
- 49:47Speaker 2: MM.
- 49:48Speaker 5: People were like, oh, it came out of left field.
- 49:51Speaker 5: I'm like, no, it, fuck it didn't. Did you watch
- 49:53Speaker 5: the rest of the movie. This ship's out of control
- 49:56Speaker 5: from the beginning and it just really hit the peak there.
- 50:00Speaker 6: So yeah, that's where it seals the deal for me.
- 50:03Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 50:03Speaker 3: Sure.
- 50:03Speaker 5: And then you have her, dude, her face coming over
- 50:07Speaker 5: the star is like the perfect you know, and I love.
- 50:12Speaker 5: On this podcast, we finally got the chat about the substance.
- 50:16Speaker 4: Yeah, it's overdue. Well, speaking of creature designs, how did
- 50:22Speaker 4: you go about approaching designing Frogman himself.
- 50:27Speaker 3: It's funny if you if you saw like the reference
- 50:31Speaker 3: photos we had, it's like the most adorable little like
- 50:35Speaker 3: the pictures of frogs. I because okay, here's here's part
- 50:40Speaker 3: of it is at the time that we designed him,
- 50:43Speaker 3: at the time that we started shooting the movie, I
- 50:46Speaker 3: really wanted to when we like we were shooting most
- 50:49Speaker 3: of the movie, he.
- 50:51Speaker 6: Was not telepathic and he did not have a wand.
- 50:56Speaker 3: And I really got to kick out of this idea
- 51:00Speaker 3: that he might just be some anomaly of nature and
- 51:04Speaker 3: he is just a giant frog and he's got zero
- 51:08Speaker 3: intelligence and these people are just like projecting their desire
- 51:13Speaker 3: to like worship something onto him, and so I mean,
- 51:16Speaker 3: they're like throwing women at him, and he's just a
- 51:18Speaker 3: big dumb frog. So he's like, all right, let's go.
- 51:23Speaker 3: I thought that was super funny. And then when we
- 51:25Speaker 3: got into the third act and the third act wasn't
- 51:28Speaker 3: really working, it was like, yeah, we need more frog Man.
- 51:30Speaker 3: And then like I was also like, why does he
- 51:32Speaker 3: not have a land? That is like that's the part
- 51:34Speaker 3: that you know, attracted us to his legend, and like
- 51:39Speaker 3: it's such an integral part of his identity as a cryptid,
- 51:43Speaker 3: like we got to get the wand in there.
- 51:45Speaker 6: So then we added all.
- 51:47Speaker 3: All those things and the telepathy to to make the
- 51:51Speaker 3: the wood scene more intense. And so when we designed
- 51:55Speaker 3: the suit originally, I was like, I don't want him
- 51:58Speaker 3: to read as evil or sinister or intelligent. I just
- 52:03Speaker 3: want him to look like a fucking frog. Yeah, and
- 52:06Speaker 3: so that's kind of that's kind of what we did.
- 52:08Speaker 3: And then yeah, when you see him in the next
- 52:11Speaker 3: now he's I feel like our biggest inspiration for his design,
- 52:15Speaker 3: and Frogman two is like Emperor Palpatine, Like he's now
- 52:19Speaker 3: he's like full blo. We know he's intelligent, he's telepathic,
- 52:23Speaker 3: he's mad. You know, like, let's lean into it. Let's
- 52:26Speaker 3: have him be like a villain.
- 52:29Speaker 5: But that that was form, bro, that was the moment
- 52:34Speaker 5: because I'm watching the movie and when they come around
- 52:38Speaker 5: the corner and he's pulling her in with the tongue
- 52:42Speaker 5: in a crazy shot with the tongue, right, and then
- 52:45Speaker 5: I stand up, right, I stand my wife is into
- 52:47Speaker 5: I think my wife is like in the shower. I
- 52:48Speaker 5: stand up and I'm like, whoa shit. And then they
- 52:51Speaker 5: pick up the wand and like use it against it.
- 52:54Speaker 5: I'm like, oh shit, I was like, fucking love this
- 52:57Speaker 5: movie so ridiculous, just I fucking loved it.
- 53:02Speaker 3: Man. A really funny story about that too, is like
- 53:05Speaker 3: Nate that plays Dallas, when we shot that scene of
- 53:10Speaker 3: her wrapped up in the tongue and everything, there still
- 53:13Speaker 3: was no wand and and so he was like at
- 53:17Speaker 3: that when we shot it, he just goes, hey, you asshole,
- 53:20Speaker 3: and like that is what scares frog Man away. And
- 53:23Speaker 3: then later on I was like, oh wait, he was.
- 53:27Speaker 3: You know now at that point he had the wand
- 53:30Speaker 3: and it was like, well, where's the wand He's not
- 53:31Speaker 3: holding the wand? Oh, the one must be on the ground.
- 53:33Speaker 3: Dallas could pick it up and shoot it at him. Yeah,
- 53:36Speaker 3: And so I shot those out like that moment is
- 53:40Speaker 3: like five different shots spliced together. And so when Nate
- 53:45Speaker 3: was at the premiere of Frogman and saw that scene,
- 53:49Speaker 3: he was like, what is going on? I never he
- 53:52Speaker 3: was like, I didn't do that. I never held a want.
- 53:54Speaker 3: It's like, yeah, that's my hand. I shot that later.
- 53:58Speaker 5: It works so well, dude, I would have never thought
- 54:00Speaker 5: that was a result of splicing it all.
- 54:03Speaker 3: I'm pretty proud of that little moment because it is
- 54:06Speaker 3: just like you can't tell him. Part of it is
- 54:08Speaker 3: like we shot in a cave. Part of it is
- 54:11Speaker 3: like literally the like the where I pick up the
- 54:13Speaker 3: wand is the floor of the SFX studio, Like yeah, yeah,
- 54:18Speaker 3: it's really really a mixture. And then that also led
- 54:21Speaker 3: us to later on being like, well, if Dallas picked
- 54:25Speaker 3: up the wand he would still have the wand he
- 54:28Speaker 3: didn't want to he want to put it down right,
- 54:31Speaker 3: you know, and so like that, I mean, that's what
- 54:33Speaker 3: the entire second movie about it is about, is like
- 54:36Speaker 3: he's got fraud man's wand so it's it's so funny
- 54:39Speaker 3: how that's become everything to to this, to this series
- 54:44Speaker 3: and we've you know, we started shooting the first movie
- 54:46Speaker 3: without it even being involved.
- 54:49Speaker 5: Yeah, it's it's such a triumphant moment. It's like the
- 54:52Speaker 5: moment where it all just like the whole vibe in
- 54:56Speaker 5: the movie culminates and you're like, this is what I want,
- 54:59Speaker 5: Like this is perfect. He puts it up and it's
- 55:02Speaker 5: just that bright. Oh dude, I got so excited and
- 55:07Speaker 5: it's like this is exactly what I wanted this to
- 55:09Speaker 5: lean into. Because you can be you can be realistic
- 55:15Speaker 5: and I always cite Indiana Jones for this. I love
- 55:18Speaker 5: the Indiana Jones franchise, and it's one of the only
- 55:20Speaker 5: franchises that can feel grounded except when it's not. It's
- 55:26Speaker 5: the only franchise that you can pull out some crazy
- 55:30Speaker 5: supernatural force and you know, attached to some historical relevance.
- 55:34Speaker 5: Like you watch Raiders. You can get through most of
- 55:37Speaker 5: Raiders and never think it's you know, sci fi. You're like, oh,
- 55:41Speaker 5: this is really cool. This is a perfect adventure movie.
- 55:43Speaker 5: And then the end, when the chest opens, it turns
- 55:46Speaker 5: into full blown sci fi and no, it throws every
- 55:50Speaker 5: rule out the window. And here is you know, something
- 55:53Speaker 5: completely unrealistic in the sense that we think, and it's
- 55:57Speaker 5: the perfect tie that ties it all together. And it's great.
- 56:01Speaker 5: You can do that and it works. You never I
- 56:04Speaker 5: guess what I'm saying is it fits. It doesn't make
- 56:07Speaker 5: it feel unrealistically.
- 56:09Speaker 3: Mm hmm.
- 56:10Speaker 6: Yeah, that's so true.
- 56:11Speaker 3: And I I love when movies take swings like that,
- 56:15Speaker 3: and sometimes it doesn't work, and I'm still just like,
- 56:17Speaker 3: I'm glad you tried it, you know, because I think,
- 56:20Speaker 3: you know, a lot of stuff is just not as
- 56:23Speaker 3: outlandish as I wish it was because people are scared
- 56:26Speaker 3: to take risks, you know, And yeah, Indiana Jones, it's
- 56:32Speaker 3: a family that you know, Raise loss Ark is a
- 56:34Speaker 3: family friendly adventure movie. Like you said, very grounded for
- 56:37Speaker 3: the most part, and you know, we want people's faces
- 56:42Speaker 3: to melt off at the end, we want spirits to
- 56:44Speaker 3: fly around. Let's do it. Who cares here for? Like,
- 56:47Speaker 3: why can't there why can't there be weird shit in movies?
- 56:50Speaker 3: Why can't you know, a movie that's not a musical
- 56:53Speaker 3: just have like one random musical number. I just I
- 56:55Speaker 3: love shit like that.
- 56:56Speaker 5: Yeah, but that's what's happening. I think there. You're seeing
- 56:59Speaker 5: that more and more in kind of indie more so
- 57:03Speaker 5: indie or like kind of lower like I was. I've
- 57:05Speaker 5: been watching a ton of reviews at a Fantastic Fest
- 57:08Speaker 5: and I haven't seen any of the movies at a
- 57:11Speaker 5: Fantastic Fest, but I heard that a lot. I heard
- 57:14Speaker 5: like more of the grounded movies were kind of like
- 57:16Speaker 5: the less appreciated, And I hear a lot of movies
- 57:20Speaker 5: just taking big, big swings and going for it. And
- 57:23Speaker 5: I mean not in like the uh the A twenty
- 57:27Speaker 5: four sense of like the Love Light's Bleeding twist, you know,
- 57:31Speaker 5: where it's all of a sudden you have a fifty
- 57:32Speaker 5: foot woman and there was barely anything to tell you
- 57:36Speaker 5: beforehand that that was gonna happen.
- 57:37Speaker 3: You know that.
- 57:39Speaker 5: I feel like it doesn't earn it as well. But
- 57:43Speaker 5: we are kind of coming back to the acceptance of
- 57:47Speaker 5: let's just go crazy. Like the fact that there's a
- 57:51Speaker 5: Toxic Avenger remake in twenty twenty five with Peter Dinklagh
- 57:54Speaker 5: is enough I think to justify that we're we're heading
- 57:57Speaker 5: back in that direction.
- 57:58Speaker 3: Yeah, I think. I mean, we're kind of at a
- 58:01Speaker 3: point in the business where like the things that people
- 58:06Speaker 3: in a bank on being like sure bets and safe
- 58:09Speaker 3: bets are like are not curently, and so it's kind
- 58:12Speaker 3: of just giving giving a lot of freedom to filmmakers
- 58:16Speaker 3: to play around because people don't really know what works.
- 58:19Speaker 3: And thankfully, right now what is working is things being
- 58:24Speaker 3: indescribable and weird, you know, things like substance and weapons
- 58:28Speaker 3: and together, like those are the movies that are like
- 58:30Speaker 3: making huge splashes, and it's like really giving us the
- 58:35Speaker 3: the leniency to just like really experiment.
- 58:39Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, it's cool man, And companies like Neon, you know,
- 58:44Speaker 5: like the fact that with with Shelby Oaks that Neon
- 58:47Speaker 5: acquired that and was like, hey, we're gonna give you
- 58:49Speaker 5: some more money to go back and kind of flesh
- 58:52Speaker 5: some stuff out, add some more more.
- 58:55Speaker 3: You know.
- 58:56Speaker 5: It's it's really cool that there that you have companies
- 58:59Speaker 5: like this doing it, because your big studios aren't aren't
- 59:02Speaker 5: doing I mean unless you have like a Zach Kreiger,
- 59:04Speaker 5: you know, who's kind of like the exception to the
- 59:06Speaker 5: rule for bigger studios, or like Robert Eggers. You know,
- 59:11Speaker 5: clearly that guy. They're they're just kind of letting him
- 59:14Speaker 5: do whatever whatever he wants to do.
- 59:18Speaker 3: You know.
- 59:18Speaker 5: It's it's cool, man, It's and it's it's funny because
- 59:21Speaker 5: I felt like for a long time like everyone kind
- 59:23Speaker 5: of looked at like ari Aster and was like, this
- 59:25Speaker 5: is too weird for us. And A twenty four was
- 59:31Speaker 5: kind of the first, you know, with Hereditary and then
- 59:33Speaker 5: you add bo Is Afraid and with h what was
- 59:37Speaker 5: the movie he put out this year? It was uh Eddington. Yeah, Eddington.
- 59:42Speaker 5: Coming from A twenty four felt like we got a
- 59:45Speaker 5: filmmaker doing his thing. And I wasn't the biggest fan
- 59:48Speaker 5: of Eddington, mostly because if it's like too real. It
- 59:51Speaker 5: reminded me of too much, you know, stuff that's currently
- 59:55Speaker 5: going on in the world in the pandemic. But I
- 59:58Speaker 5: admire letting people tell their story, like put it out
- 1:00:01Speaker 5: there or like it's shocking to me that I haven't
- 1:00:04Speaker 5: seen one battle after another. But when I saw the
- 1:00:06Speaker 5: trailer for it, I was like, wow, this is being
- 1:00:10Speaker 5: accepted today. Two hours and forty five minutes of a
- 1:00:14Speaker 5: story of terrorism and sounds very rare. You know, Yeah,
- 1:00:20Speaker 5: it's rare, but it's cool that it's out there.
- 1:00:26Speaker 6: Now.
- 1:00:26Speaker 4: Were there moments during production where things got a little
- 1:00:29Speaker 4: too real or creepy?
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: I mean that like a lot of the running around
- 1:00:36Speaker 3: the woods stuff was just me taking the camera and
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: running around the woods and I'd just be like, all right, everybody,
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: just hang back, I'm just gonna run around for a
- 1:00:44Speaker 3: little while. And like that kind of the crazy moment
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: where like you know, Dallas gets sapped with the wand
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: and then enters like some sort of like black lodge realm.
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: You know, that was me like Rumman around things like that.
- 1:01:02Speaker 3: That was like just very treacherous terrain, Like, yeah, it
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: was all these dead woods, but like I don't know,
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: I was getting I was getting deep, and then I'd
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: get to a point where I'm like, all right, I
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: got what I need and I looked around and I'd
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: gone so far off the path that i didn't know
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: where the path was and I didn't know.
- 1:01:20Speaker 6: My friends were so like, Oh, this sucks.
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: And then so we had to like play Marco Polo
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: for me to find my way back because there was
- 1:01:28Speaker 3: just nothing to go off them.
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: Wow.
- 1:01:30Speaker 5: Was there ever a moment where you felt like you
- 1:01:31Speaker 5: were like, did the did the memories of Blair Witch
- 1:01:34Speaker 5: Project like come back? You're like, oh, fuck, I'm out here.
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: On the tree totally. And I mean when you're like
- 1:01:40Speaker 3: when I'm shooting that stuff and I'm looking through the camera,
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: I'm I'm getting scared filming in because I'm like, I'm
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: gonna you know, I'm gonna turn to the left and
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: there's gonna be a fucking creature or there's gonna be
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: a witch or you know, a totem or something like
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: you really, as someone who's watched a million horror movies,
- 1:02:00Speaker 3: watch Blair Which over and over, you just can't get
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: that out of your head when you're in the moment.
- 1:02:04Speaker 5: Yeah, that's dude. Blair Witch. I mean, I don't think
- 1:02:07Speaker 5: I've been in the woods ever in my life and
- 1:02:09Speaker 5: not thought about blair Witch, like it just into passing thought.
- 1:02:13Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, like what that the movie.
- 1:02:15Speaker 5: It's kind of like see Paranormal Activity didn't have that
- 1:02:19Speaker 5: stang power for me. Paranormal Activity was very much like
- 1:02:22Speaker 5: I was scared while watching it, and then I just
- 1:02:24Speaker 5: kind of, you know, pushed it off. Blair Witch lives
- 1:02:27Speaker 5: in me, like it's it's there, it exists, and I'm
- 1:02:31Speaker 5: always afraid of like I'm gonna go into woods and
- 1:02:33Speaker 5: I'm gonna find some weird tree configurations, you know, or
- 1:02:37Speaker 5: like my friend's teeth in a bag.
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: Yeah. I remember seeing Seeing Paranormal Activity in the theater
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: when it first came out, and like I liked it,
- 1:02:50Speaker 3: but like watching it, I was like that wasn't that
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: wasn't scary, man, people were talking that off whatever. And
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: then I went with my uncle and then my uncle
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: dropped me off at home, Like I said, my parents
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: work night, so like you dropped me off and I
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: was home alone, and then every single sound I heard,
- 1:03:07Speaker 3: every shadow I looked into, like set me off the
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: rest of the night, and I like slept with the light.
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: So I was like, Okay, I guess that movie was
- 1:03:15Speaker 3: actually pretty fucking effectiveness. Yeah, it was just like it
- 1:03:18Speaker 3: had a lingering effect.
- 1:03:20Speaker 5: But what I those movies though, like Paranormal Activity being
- 1:03:25Speaker 5: incredibly low budget, you know, like Orin Pelly didn't even
- 1:03:28Speaker 5: want to get into Hollywood. He just thought like, oh,
- 1:03:31Speaker 5: here's a cool scary idea. Movies like Blair Witch.
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:03:36Speaker 5: I mean those had to have like some sort of
- 1:03:39Speaker 5: deep psychological influence on you as somebody making a low
- 1:03:43Speaker 5: budget movie, you know, like we we had in August
- 1:03:47Speaker 5: we covered the Texas Shansaw massacre, and we had Dylan
- 1:03:51Speaker 5: Anglin on, who's a filmmaker incredible like low budget movies,
- 1:03:58Speaker 5: And I was talking to him and and one thing
- 1:04:00Speaker 5: we were talking about was kind of like going back
- 1:04:03Speaker 5: and watching the Texas Chainsaw masker, knowing at that time
- 1:04:05Speaker 5: this was made for almost nothing. I had that low
- 1:04:09Speaker 5: budget feel, and how whether people realize it or not,
- 1:04:12Speaker 5: it's now influencing other low budget filmmakers in some way
- 1:04:17Speaker 5: of like oh that's possible, we can make that. You know,
- 1:04:22Speaker 5: was there ever a moment where you kind of realized like,
- 1:04:26Speaker 5: like fuck, man, that stuff paid this path for me.
- 1:04:28Speaker 6: To get here and to do this, Oh yeah, totally.
- 1:04:32Speaker 3: And like I mean, like I said, I just kept
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: watching Bluir Witch Project over and over to kind of
- 1:04:38Speaker 3: remind myself what we were doing, because a lot of times,
- 1:04:42Speaker 3: you know, I would like get lost watching the footage
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: on set and just start to get.
- 1:04:47Speaker 6: Nervous that we were making something too low grade.
- 1:04:52Speaker 3: And I was just like, I was gonna want to
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: watch this it looks like shit, I mean, that's what
- 1:04:55Speaker 3: we wanted, but like is it interesting? And so yeah,
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: I had to think back to those success stories all
- 1:05:04Speaker 3: the time, and you know, I mean we were just
- 1:05:06Speaker 3: making what we wanted to make and what we could
- 1:05:08Speaker 3: what we could afford to make. But so I didn't
- 1:05:11Speaker 3: ever have delusions that we were gonna have like a
- 1:05:13Speaker 3: run like Lyrist Project or anything. But yeah, I mean
- 1:05:19Speaker 3: that's that's I mean, that's kind of the aesthetic that
- 1:05:22Speaker 3: you lean into when when you don't have the resources
- 1:05:24Speaker 3: to make a Hollywood movie. And it's funny like I
- 1:05:28Speaker 3: saw that, you know when I was when I started out.
- 1:05:29Speaker 3: I've seen a lot of people that have very little money,
- 1:05:34Speaker 3: but they're like I want to make you know, Fury
- 1:05:37Speaker 3: Road or I want to make Star Wars or I
- 1:05:39Speaker 3: want to make The Goodfellas and you got your friends
- 1:05:42Speaker 3: acting in it, and you're shooting at your mom's house
- 1:05:45Speaker 3: instead of like a nice, well lit.
- 1:05:47Speaker 6: Italian restaurant, and it just feels so cheap.
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: You know. It's like, yeah, so you gotta work. You
- 1:05:53Speaker 3: gotta work with what you have.
- 1:05:55Speaker 5: Remember, Like it's so crazy thinking about like I'm a
- 1:05:58Speaker 5: huge as Spielberg guy. Well, like absolutely fascinated with with
- 1:06:03Speaker 5: with Spielborg growing up in the ambul And era in
- 1:06:05Speaker 5: the nineties. But I watched a couple of his like
- 1:06:09Speaker 5: short films that he made leading up to kind of
- 1:06:11Speaker 5: like Jaws and Sugarland Express and like you watch those
- 1:06:14Speaker 5: and I was like, fuck, dude, these are better than
- 1:06:18Speaker 5: most people's low budget ventures. And you can kind of
- 1:06:22Speaker 5: see where that talent blossoms from, you know. And it's
- 1:06:26Speaker 5: funny because he made like a two hour I can't
- 1:06:29Speaker 5: remember if it was World War two. He made like
- 1:06:31Speaker 5: a two hour war film like with no budget with
- 1:06:35Speaker 5: his friends, and you watch it and you see hints
- 1:06:38Speaker 5: of saving there. Oh, Like man, sometimes you just see
- 1:06:42Speaker 5: it from the get go, you know, and like he
- 1:06:45Speaker 5: was like seventeen making that and You're like, there's no
- 1:06:49Speaker 5: way you weren't born to do this, Like, you know
- 1:06:52Speaker 5: what I mean, you were put here for a reason.
- 1:06:53Speaker 5: So it's funny how because I wonder, does Frogman exists
- 1:06:57Speaker 5: without Blair Witch? Doesn't exist with now like what you
- 1:07:01Speaker 5: saw early on, you know what I mean. I always
- 1:07:04Speaker 5: kind of wonder about that, though.
- 1:07:05Speaker 6: Yeah, I don't think so.
- 1:07:07Speaker 3: I think that absolutely it exists because of the things
- 1:07:11Speaker 3: that I've absorbed and like Spielberg funny enough, I think
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: is I mean, he is just so interwoven into my
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: DNA and probably anyone's DNA that grew up on his
- 1:07:21Speaker 3: movies that like, it's I mean, so much of what
- 1:07:25Speaker 3: we do, no matter the genre of the story goes
- 1:07:28Speaker 3: back to him. We're constantly referencing him.
- 1:07:31Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, how could you not? Like I've been playing
- 1:07:34Speaker 5: I don't know if you're a big video game guy,
- 1:07:36Speaker 5: but I've been playing Indiana Jones in the Great Circle,
- 1:07:40Speaker 5: and you know, clearly not directed by Steven Spielberg, but
- 1:07:44Speaker 5: there's so much Like there's so many moments that I'm like,
- 1:07:48Speaker 5: I feel like I feel like Spielberg would be proud
- 1:07:50Speaker 5: of that. It's like the little music notes or like
- 1:07:53Speaker 5: his the way that he blocks and just lets like
- 1:07:58Speaker 5: the way things roll in the frame and the way
- 1:08:01Speaker 5: things get set up. It's it's it's undisputed the impact
- 1:08:06Speaker 5: that he had. Yet nobody can copy him.
- 1:08:09Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:08:09Speaker 5: It's a weird thing, like nobody can do it like
- 1:08:12Speaker 5: he can.
- 1:08:13Speaker 3: Yeah, well, I think where you it really goes wrong.
- 1:08:17Speaker 3: I am not a Dialogue Destiny fan at all. And
- 1:08:20Speaker 3: I really think it's like you can wear his influence
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: on your sleeves, but like when you try to like
- 1:08:29Speaker 3: emulate him, you're always gonna fall short. You know, there's
- 1:08:33Speaker 3: no one that can do it. I think J. J.
- 1:08:34Speaker 3: Abrams comes the closest, and it still feels when he's
- 1:08:38Speaker 3: trying to do Spielberg instead of just being inspired by Spielberg,
- 1:08:42Speaker 3: it feels like, uh, like a cheap copy to me.
- 1:08:48Speaker 5: Yeah, oh yeah, it's because it's Are you a Kingdom
- 1:08:51Speaker 5: of the Crystal Skull fan? I am, okay, all right, cool, okay,
- 1:08:54Speaker 5: because I I am as I mean, it's not my
- 1:08:58Speaker 5: last crusade will be my favorite, But I think Kingdom
- 1:09:03Speaker 5: of Chrystalcoal and Temple Doom are on the same you know,
- 1:09:06Speaker 5: wavelength for me, and uh, because there's still a there's
- 1:09:10Speaker 5: still a Sloolberg touch to it. There's something something to it.
- 1:09:15Speaker 5: It's that moment in Kingdom of Crystal Skull when when
- 1:09:18Speaker 5: he you know, it's him being pulled out of the car,
- 1:09:21Speaker 5: but they don't introduce him until the hat blows in
- 1:09:24Speaker 5: the frame and the camera pans up to follow the
- 1:09:27Speaker 5: hat coming up. Yeah, it's just there's something, you know,
- 1:09:31Speaker 5: It's just there's a magic to it. And I feel
- 1:09:33Speaker 5: like James Mangold he he he, he got close. You know,
- 1:09:40Speaker 5: it's like, yeah, you're right there, but like you're missing
- 1:09:42Speaker 5: a very important piece of the ingredient, you.
- 1:09:44Speaker 3: Know, the formula. I was just bored. I was just
- 1:09:48Speaker 3: really bored during three hours long.
- 1:09:51Speaker 6: Dude.
- 1:09:51Speaker 3: It's like it didn't have It had all the elements
- 1:09:55Speaker 3: to make an Indiana Jones movie, and even like a
- 1:09:57Speaker 3: really cool you know, like mission. It was like, oh,
- 1:10:01Speaker 3: now we're gonna do time travel. That's awesome, but it's
- 1:10:05Speaker 3: just it felt empty to me. It was just missing.
- 1:10:08Speaker 3: It was missing that Spielberg magic, you know. Yeah, Crusade
- 1:10:12Speaker 3: is my favorite one. I think, you know, the first
- 1:10:15Speaker 3: three or pretty much perfect movies. Crystal Skull is a
- 1:10:19Speaker 3: mixed bag, but it's still like I thought.
- 1:10:21Speaker 6: I thought when Dialod Destiny came out, Crystal Skull was
- 1:10:24Speaker 6: going to get like the.
- 1:10:27Speaker 3: The recognition that yeah, like kind of like how you know,
- 1:10:30Speaker 3: when the New Star Wars trilogy came out, everyone started
- 1:10:34Speaker 3: to look fonder on the prequels. I thought maybe that
- 1:10:36Speaker 3: was coming for Crystal Skull.
- 1:10:37Speaker 6: But it's I guess it's just us.
- 1:10:40Speaker 3: But man, there's so many great moments in that movie.
- 1:10:43Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, it's and Temple of Dooms a straight up
- 1:10:46Speaker 5: horror movie. I don't care what anybody says. Yeah, dude,
- 1:10:49Speaker 5: it's scary as shit. Dude, like that and that set.
- 1:10:53Speaker 5: It's funny because, like, as I watch more movies than
- 1:10:56Speaker 5: I learn about the filmmaking process, Like I go back
- 1:10:59Speaker 5: and I watch movies that I admire things I never
- 1:11:02Speaker 5: really did before. You know, as a kid, you're watching
- 1:11:04Speaker 5: Temple Doom, I'm fixated on the fact that he just
- 1:11:06Speaker 5: pulled out a man's heart through without causing like a
- 1:11:10Speaker 5: whole you know what I mean, He's holding the heart.
- 1:11:12Speaker 5: As a kid, I'm like, oh shit, Now I watch it,
- 1:11:15Speaker 5: and when it reveals that set, I'm like, holy shit, dude.
- 1:11:19Speaker 5: You imagine imagine going to work and that's what you're
- 1:11:22Speaker 5: working on.
- 1:11:24Speaker 3: Ro I mean, have you ridden the uh, the Indiana
- 1:11:27Speaker 3: Jones ride at Disneyland, the new one. Uh it's maybe
- 1:11:32Speaker 3: new ish, I don't know how old it is, but
- 1:11:36Speaker 3: it's like it's kind of like a mine ride, but
- 1:11:38Speaker 3: you enter, you enter this big it's not off of
- 1:11:41Speaker 3: any of the movies specifically, but you enter this giant
- 1:11:44Speaker 3: like temple and it like it is that it is
- 1:11:48Speaker 3: that feeling. It's just like, oh my god, like this
- 1:11:50Speaker 3: cause is huge? What's going on in here? Yes?
- 1:11:54Speaker 5: I think that opened. So we were there for our honeymoon.
- 1:11:56Speaker 5: It wasn't opened yet, but we're coming back in June
- 1:11:59Speaker 5: and I think it opened, like maybe right after our honeymoon.
- 1:12:04Speaker 5: Don't miss that ride because I'm like, I'll sit through there.
- 1:12:06Speaker 5: I'll sit through the Stunt Show Spectacular one thousand times,
- 1:12:10Speaker 5: you know what I mean. That's so the fact that
- 1:12:12Speaker 5: it's twenty twenty five and there is a new Indiana
- 1:12:14Speaker 5: Jones ride and it's Disney or you know, it's that's
- 1:12:18Speaker 5: pretty that's pretty cool.
- 1:12:19Speaker 3: It's sick, and it's a it's a little buried in
- 1:12:23Speaker 3: in Disneyland, like it's easy to just kind of not
- 1:12:25Speaker 3: even know it's there, so definitely put that on your list.
- 1:12:28Speaker 5: Steve's like, how the hell did we get to Indiana Jones.
- 1:12:31Speaker 5: Let's not.
- 1:12:32Speaker 4: I'm I'm cool with that.
- 1:12:34Speaker 5: Listen, Steve, you tell that there will be a future
- 1:12:36Speaker 5: Frogman movie where there will be in Indiana Jones type character. Dude,
- 1:12:40Speaker 5: he fits you.
- 1:12:41Speaker 6: Know, big time.
- 1:12:42Speaker 3: I mean we like we kept we constantly reference like
- 1:12:46Speaker 3: that because because Nate in real life is a huge
- 1:12:48Speaker 3: Harrison Ford fan. Indiana Jones, oh solo, Like that's his
- 1:12:53Speaker 3: That's one of his idols, I think, and so we
- 1:12:55Speaker 3: constantly reference, Like Dallas thinks he's Indiana Jones. He's really
- 1:13:00Speaker 3: more of a Jackburden, you know, He's just a bumbling fool.
- 1:13:05Speaker 6: That thinks he's a hero.
- 1:13:08Speaker 3: But there's yeah, there was scenes that we cut where
- 1:13:10Speaker 3: like they straight up say like, oh, you think you're
- 1:13:12Speaker 3: Indiana Jones because he's like looking around for like hidden
- 1:13:16Speaker 3: doors and shit.
- 1:13:19Speaker 6: That's so it could it could really go there.
- 1:13:24Speaker 4: Well, speaking of like I guess past like surface level
- 1:13:28Speaker 4: like as far as scares go, were there were there
- 1:13:31Speaker 4: themes that you felt like Frogman was trying to explore
- 1:13:34Speaker 4: like outside of the surface level scares.
- 1:13:38Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, it's a pretty personal story.
- 1:13:43Speaker 3: I would say for me, Nate and John, I'll just
- 1:13:47Speaker 3: speak for myself, Like I mean, when we were writing it,
- 1:13:49Speaker 3: I was I think when we started writing and I
- 1:13:52Speaker 3: was approaching thirty, and then we were still writing it
- 1:13:55Speaker 3: when I was thirty thirty one, and it's an exaggerated
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: version of how I was feeling or I was just
- 1:14:01Speaker 3: like man, I thought by thirty I would have made
- 1:14:04Speaker 3: a feature by now. I thought that I'd feel confident
- 1:14:07Speaker 3: in this, you know, career choice of being a filmmaker,
- 1:14:10Speaker 3: and here I am still you know, living paycheck to paycheck,
- 1:14:17Speaker 3: and like I just have short films to show for
- 1:14:19Speaker 3: it so far, and I'm just like, what is this
- 1:14:21Speaker 3: all leading to? You know, I wasn't like living in
- 1:14:24Speaker 3: at my mom's or you know, my sisters or anything
- 1:14:27Speaker 3: like that. But I wasn't where I thought I was
- 1:14:28Speaker 3: going to be, And so to me, like his obsession
- 1:14:34Speaker 3: with chasing Frogman is really like pretty similar to like
- 1:14:39Speaker 3: the artist obsession I think with like chasing the dream
- 1:14:44Speaker 3: of doing art for a living and not having to
- 1:14:46Speaker 3: like work in a coffee shop like Scott he does,
- 1:14:49Speaker 3: or you know, do commercials like Amy does. Things like that,
- 1:14:53Speaker 3: and that's why he's like, I'd rather like waste away
- 1:14:56Speaker 3: in my sister's guest room than get one of those
- 1:15:00Speaker 3: jobs because I'm a filmmaker, you know. Yeah, So that's
- 1:15:03Speaker 3: really what Chasing Frogman was to me. And it really
- 1:15:07Speaker 3: can you know, if you're not careful and you're not aware,
- 1:15:10Speaker 3: it can be damaging to your life as a whole,
- 1:15:12Speaker 3: and it can ripple into your relationships for sure.
- 1:15:18Speaker 4: And like so I guess kind of on a side note,
- 1:15:21Speaker 4: speaking of which do you see the Frogman is like
- 1:15:23Speaker 4: purely a monster or is it? Do you feel like
- 1:15:26Speaker 4: it's a metaphor for something?
- 1:15:31Speaker 3: I mean, you know, I think I think what horror
- 1:15:35Speaker 3: does best is when like the messages is pretty well
- 1:15:39Speaker 3: buried and it's not two surface levels. So like I
- 1:15:43Speaker 3: think you can watch Frogman and it's just a creature
- 1:15:45Speaker 3: feature and if you wanted to deeper, I've got a
- 1:15:49Speaker 3: lot to say about it, you know. But like you know,
- 1:15:50Speaker 3: sometimes when like the message is right on top in
- 1:15:54Speaker 3: plain sight, I'm just like, uh, can't you like bury
- 1:15:58Speaker 3: this a little bit? You know? Where's the And I
- 1:16:00Speaker 3: think a lot of horror movies have gone that route
- 1:16:02Speaker 3: where it's like it's it's message forward instead of horror
- 1:16:07Speaker 3: movie forward.
- 1:16:10Speaker 6: But yeah, it's totally a metaphor.
- 1:16:11Speaker 3: I think frogment is totally a metaphor for obsession, just
- 1:16:15Speaker 3: obsession in general, whether you're obsessed with.
- 1:16:19Speaker 6: You know, being an artist or or any obsessed with anything.
- 1:16:24Speaker 5: And I mean.
- 1:16:26Speaker 3: There are a lot of people that ruin their lives
- 1:16:31Speaker 3: over their obsession with Bigfoot or UFOs or Roswell. I
- 1:16:37Speaker 3: mean this is like it's fun to joke about, but
- 1:16:41Speaker 3: it's a very real thing. Yeah. You know, if someone
- 1:16:45Speaker 3: thinks they saw something or they get a little too
- 1:16:47Speaker 3: deep into the conspiracies, like they're gone, they isolate themselves
- 1:16:51Speaker 3: from their family and that that becomes their entire life.
- 1:16:54Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, it's I guess. I guess I kind of
- 1:16:58Speaker 5: saw it a little bit of obviously not in a
- 1:17:01Speaker 5: horror sense, but a little bit of like just a
- 1:17:03Speaker 5: fascination of childhood, Like I think about I think about
- 1:17:08Speaker 5: being a kid and being in love with dinosaurs, you
- 1:17:11Speaker 5: know what I mean. And that was every and clearly
- 1:17:12Speaker 5: I didn't see a dinosaur in real life, but when
- 1:17:15Speaker 5: I was six years old and I saw Jurassic Park,
- 1:17:19Speaker 5: that opened up a whole obsession that lasted. I still
- 1:17:23Speaker 5: kind of feel like today, like and you know, there's
- 1:17:26Speaker 5: I still sometimes go to a museum and I'm like, oh,
- 1:17:31Speaker 5: you know, but it is that fascination. And I think
- 1:17:35Speaker 5: it is funny as a kid what we see and
- 1:17:38Speaker 5: how we carry it into everything because we do this
- 1:17:41Speaker 5: podcast because as kids, we saw movies and we saw
- 1:17:46Speaker 5: something in them that triggered some positive release. And now
- 1:17:52Speaker 5: we make it everything that we do in a different
- 1:17:55Speaker 5: sense than you do, you being a filmmaker, us being
- 1:17:58Speaker 5: more like discussion and things like that. But that's kind
- 1:18:04Speaker 5: of what I took from it. I kind of took
- 1:18:05Speaker 5: this more positive note of just fascination and how that
- 1:18:07Speaker 5: follows into, you know, the rest of your life. And
- 1:18:11Speaker 5: I'm I'm of the camp that I think adults are
- 1:18:13Speaker 5: too adult, Like we we we can't be, you know.
- 1:18:18Speaker 5: I feel like most of the people are like, oh,
- 1:18:20Speaker 5: I go to my nine to five and I pay
- 1:18:22Speaker 5: my bills and I'm an adult, and it's like, deep
- 1:18:25Speaker 5: down there's some kid caged up that just like, come on, man,
- 1:18:28Speaker 5: let's build some legos, Like let's let's go do this thing.
- 1:18:32Speaker 3: Absolutely we let that out, you know, Yeah, that is
- 1:18:37Speaker 3: that is absolutely what is happening, and and it's like,
- 1:18:40Speaker 3: I think our generation is changing this a bit. But
- 1:18:43Speaker 3: for the longest time, I mean it was it was
- 1:18:46Speaker 3: looked down upon so like, oh, you're still so childish
- 1:18:50Speaker 3: or you know, you're still kind of like yeah, you
- 1:18:52Speaker 3: still play with legos, or you still like to watch
- 1:18:54Speaker 3: cartoons or read comic books. And I think our generation
- 1:18:58Speaker 3: is mostly grown out of that. But it used to
- 1:19:00Speaker 3: be like this stigma of like grow up, and it's
- 1:19:03Speaker 3: like grow up into what being someone who like has
- 1:19:05Speaker 3: lost their sense of like awe and wunder, you know,
- 1:19:09Speaker 3: because it's yeah, I think when you're when you're too
- 1:19:13Speaker 3: in your day to day and your routine and the
- 1:19:17Speaker 3: mundaneness of being an adult, which sucks. I don't you know,
- 1:19:20Speaker 3: if anyone enjoys that as it about being an adult, great,
- 1:19:24Speaker 3: I'm glad you enjoy it, but like I don't get it. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:19:28Speaker 3: I mean I was just I was just in the
- 1:19:30Speaker 3: desert and like looking up at the stars, and I
- 1:19:32Speaker 3: just my mind went wild just thinking about like you know,
- 1:19:37Speaker 3: what's like I just became immediately obsessed all over again
- 1:19:41Speaker 3: with space and planets and like how much do we
- 1:19:45Speaker 3: really know about it? And you know, the Big Bang
- 1:19:48Speaker 3: and like all this stuff. And yeah, I mean I
- 1:19:51Speaker 3: never I never want to lose that. And I think
- 1:19:53Speaker 3: it you don't necessarily have to be an artist to
- 1:19:56Speaker 3: keep tap be tapped into that, but at least like
- 1:19:59Speaker 3: having a appreciation for some sort of art, whether it's music, movies, painting,
- 1:20:05Speaker 3: for sure.
- 1:20:05Speaker 4: And there's even like shades of it that I felt like,
- 1:20:08Speaker 4: you know, it's so easy to look back on like
- 1:20:11Speaker 4: childhood and and you know, certain memories that you have,
- 1:20:14Speaker 4: like you know, reflecting on like like past events or
- 1:20:18Speaker 4: memories with like these rose tinted glasses, and you know,
- 1:20:22Speaker 4: sometimes it can be a little skewed, you know, how
- 1:20:24Speaker 4: we're viewing it, you know, like when we're looking at
- 1:20:26Speaker 4: it in the hindsight. But I think that that's just
- 1:20:29Speaker 4: like a fascinating angle to it. It's kind of a
- 1:20:32Speaker 4: great way to view it. Now. Was there like a
- 1:20:35Speaker 4: particular scene that you knew would kind of make or
- 1:20:38Speaker 4: break the experience for the audience when you were filming.
- 1:20:45Speaker 3: I mean, obviously when frog Man finally shows up, I
- 1:20:49Speaker 3: knew that was pretty damn important. And everything in the
- 1:20:56Speaker 3: caves at the end, which went through a lot of
- 1:21:00Speaker 3: different iterations before we got to what before we got
- 1:21:03Speaker 3: to what we have. Like I mean, in the in
- 1:21:05Speaker 3: the original draft, frog Man was only in that uh
- 1:21:08Speaker 3: that chase scene in the woods, and then when they
- 1:21:10Speaker 3: go into the caves, it's all cold stuff and you
- 1:21:12Speaker 3: still saw some cool things, but like, uh, there the
- 1:21:15Speaker 3: frog Man was not in the caves, and it was
- 1:21:18Speaker 3: like we shot the we shot the woods scene. It
- 1:21:21Speaker 3: was like that was cool, but that's not enough Frogmen.
- 1:21:23Speaker 3: We need more frogment than the frogmen.
- 1:21:25Speaker 4: Dial it up.
- 1:21:27Speaker 6: So I knew those were pretty important.
- 1:21:28Speaker 3: And that was man. That was a really tough thing
- 1:21:30Speaker 3: because like you put the camera in the in you know,
- 1:21:35Speaker 3: the three of their hands, and have them wander around town,
- 1:21:37Speaker 3: and you're naturally gonna get really authentic feeling stuff. That
- 1:21:42Speaker 3: stuff was super easy. The character scenes were a little
- 1:21:47Speaker 3: bit tougher because they were kind of you know, they
- 1:21:49Speaker 3: were scripted, but you know that our actress were so
- 1:21:53Speaker 3: good that I think we pulled it off for the
- 1:21:55Speaker 3: most part. But then you get into the creature stuff
- 1:21:57Speaker 3: and you get into the caves and affects things that
- 1:22:01Speaker 3: you know do need to be shot in a very
- 1:22:02Speaker 3: specific way, and it's really hard to maintain that authenticity
- 1:22:07Speaker 3: in that because it is less of a free flowing
- 1:22:13Speaker 3: scene and it's like more controlled, you know, like Okay, well,
- 1:22:16Speaker 3: you know the bride has to walk out here and
- 1:22:18Speaker 3: then become possessed and then Frogman comes out, and so
- 1:22:21Speaker 3: I was kind of worried about, like, I mean, are
- 1:22:23Speaker 3: we going to totally lose people at this point?
- 1:22:26Speaker 4: Yeah? Yeah, no, I trust me, I totally get it.
- 1:22:29Speaker 4: But I mean I think that the film is very
- 1:22:32Speaker 4: effective and like how it approaches things. It strikes the
- 1:22:36Speaker 4: balance between showing like enough and too much, you know.
- 1:22:41Speaker 4: I feel like it's like we were talking about lessons
- 1:22:43Speaker 4: more so, I think it really kind of hones in
- 1:22:45Speaker 4: on the atmosphere that you were trying to get across. Now,
- 1:22:49Speaker 4: I was going to ask you, how did the partnership
- 1:22:51Speaker 4: with Terror Vision come about? Like did they approach you
- 1:22:54Speaker 4: or how did that exactly happen.
- 1:22:57Speaker 3: That's a good question. I think they reached out to us.
- 1:23:01Speaker 3: I can't say for sure the because I know the
- 1:23:06Speaker 3: first people we reached out to about a physical release
- 1:23:09Speaker 3: was lunch Meet VHS because I thought I thought to
- 1:23:14Speaker 3: release the movie on VHS before it's available anywhere else, streaming,
- 1:23:18Speaker 3: Blu ray anything would be just a super fun gimmick
- 1:23:22Speaker 3: to do, and it worked because, like I mean, they
- 1:23:25Speaker 3: sold out of the presale of vhs before anyone even
- 1:23:29Speaker 3: knew what the hell the movie was.
- 1:23:30Speaker 6: So that that was fun.
- 1:23:32Speaker 3: But yeah, Terror Vision, I can't remember for sure who
- 1:23:35Speaker 3: reached out to who, but they've been an incredible partner.
- 1:23:37Speaker 3: I mean, they put out two unbelievable, you know, additions
- 1:23:41Speaker 3: to frog Man, and they're they're executive producers on on
- 1:23:45Speaker 3: Frogman Returns, which is awesome.
- 1:23:47Speaker 6: So they really believe in in this series.
- 1:23:50Speaker 5: Oh so we're gonna get a good release returns, I
- 1:23:53Speaker 5: would imagine, I would imagine.
- 1:23:56Speaker 4: Awesome. I'm I'm all for that. Did you you feel
- 1:24:00Speaker 4: like tear Vision was like the right home for Frogman?
- 1:24:02Speaker 4: I mean, once you guys were starting to like iron
- 1:24:04Speaker 4: things out together, Oh for sure.
- 1:24:06Speaker 3: Yeah. They You know, I think it's pretty easy to
- 1:24:11Speaker 3: tell when you know, somebody is blowing smoke just because
- 1:24:15Speaker 3: they want to add one more title to their catalog,
- 1:24:18Speaker 3: or when somebody genuinely likes the movie they're trying to,
- 1:24:24Speaker 3: you know, become a partner on and understand it. And
- 1:24:28Speaker 3: they really really proved pretty quickly that they appreciated the
- 1:24:33Speaker 3: movie and understood what it was.
- 1:24:35Speaker 4: Yeah, Yeah, they incredible.
- 1:24:37Speaker 5: It's so cool, man, because we based this whole entire
- 1:24:41Speaker 5: show on a bonus feature, right, which is the audio commentary.
- 1:24:45Speaker 5: And it's kind of a dying art. You're not seeing
- 1:24:48Speaker 5: it as much as you used to. But outside of
- 1:24:53Speaker 5: just keeping physical media alive and film restoration alive, these
- 1:24:57Speaker 5: companies are also keeping those little features that we admire
- 1:25:02Speaker 5: so much alive. And that's the best part is that, like,
- 1:25:07Speaker 5: I can pull a seventies shallow off my shelf and
- 1:25:10Speaker 5: it has a commentary with a historian, it has interviews
- 1:25:15Speaker 5: with like the guy that was in the background.
- 1:25:18Speaker 3: Over here, and it's true.
- 1:25:20Speaker 5: You get this whole comprehensive deep dive like you've never
- 1:25:24Speaker 5: had before. And now we're kind of in a world where,
- 1:25:27Speaker 5: like I'm a big fan of reading books, so like
- 1:25:31Speaker 5: we have retrospective three hundred page books on the most
- 1:25:35Speaker 5: obscure horror movies yeah ever and documentaries and it's it's
- 1:25:39Speaker 5: really incredible, man. Like I think people not into physical
- 1:25:44Speaker 5: media and not in the genre stuff are missing out
- 1:25:47Speaker 5: big time on what's coming out.
- 1:25:49Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I'm so thankful for all these boutique labels because,
- 1:25:52Speaker 3: like I mean, I was the guy that took every
- 1:25:55Speaker 3: paycheck to best Buy and Target every Tuesday when how
- 1:26:00Speaker 3: you do Blu rays would drop.
- 1:26:03Speaker 6: I mean that's where all my money went. I have
- 1:26:05Speaker 6: a stupid collection.
- 1:26:08Speaker 3: And when it started to die out and streaming started
- 1:26:11Speaker 3: to take over, it was really disheartening how they just
- 1:26:15Speaker 3: stopped putting effort into the releases, which was so bizarre
- 1:26:19Speaker 3: to me because I was like, Okay, I can go
- 1:26:21Speaker 3: watch the movie streaming. Why don't you make it more
- 1:26:24Speaker 3: worth it to buy the physical copy? You know, why
- 1:26:27Speaker 3: wouldn't you double down on Okay, there's gonna be multiple commentaries,
- 1:26:30Speaker 3: it's gonna be a two and a half hour making
- 1:26:32Speaker 3: a buying the scenes, there's gonna be all these featurettes.
- 1:26:34Speaker 3: Then somebody like me is still going to keep buying
- 1:26:38Speaker 3: physical media, and I completely stopped. I barely ever buy
- 1:26:41Speaker 3: anything now unless it is like from terror Visions and apps,
- 1:26:46Speaker 3: you know, Vinegar Syndrome somebody like that, because studios just
- 1:26:50Speaker 3: don't put any effort into their releases anymore.
- 1:26:53Speaker 5: Yeah, well that's I mean, that's what it is. Severn
- 1:26:55Speaker 5: is my favorite company that their hands down, like the
- 1:26:59Speaker 5: company I owned the most of I'm pretty like I
- 1:27:02Speaker 5: don't really question much of what I buy from them.
- 1:27:06Speaker 5: And the fact that in the last couple of years
- 1:27:08Speaker 5: we've gotten a Black and Manuel collection is incredible. We're
- 1:27:12Speaker 5: getting a regular like the standard of Manuel series collection.
- 1:27:17Speaker 5: The work they're doing with some of the Argento four
- 1:27:20Speaker 5: k's is incredible, Like, and they're not just doing it
- 1:27:25Speaker 5: surface level. They're going in and finding and interviewing incredible
- 1:27:30Speaker 5: people who have never been interviewed before, and it's just
- 1:27:34Speaker 5: astounding the amount of work that goes into it.
- 1:27:37Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean that I saw an image for I'm
- 1:27:40Speaker 3: going to tell you right horror show this coming weekend,
- 1:27:43Speaker 3: and they had an image for Demons, like a you know,
- 1:27:47Speaker 3: a thumbnail and I saw it and I was like,
- 1:27:50Speaker 3: is there a Demon's remake? Because the image looked so good?
- 1:27:55Speaker 3: And then I read the the synopsis and it's, you know,
- 1:27:59Speaker 3: it's the nineteen eight for whatever whenever it came out, Demons,
- 1:28:02Speaker 3: just like a four K restoration of it.
- 1:28:04Speaker 6: I think maybe Terror Vision did it. I can't or
- 1:28:07Speaker 6: maybe it's Viggers.
- 1:28:08Speaker 3: I can't remember who did it. Yeah, But I mean,
- 1:28:09Speaker 3: that's how how good, how much effort they're putting into
- 1:28:12Speaker 3: these things is I mean, I'm like, holy shit, I've
- 1:28:15Speaker 3: seen Demons a million times and I can't wait to
- 1:28:16Speaker 3: see it again.
- 1:28:18Speaker 6: It's gonna look like that.
- 1:28:20Speaker 4: The four K is incredible, Like I just can't believe
- 1:28:23Speaker 4: how big. I mean, because I've had it all the
- 1:28:25Speaker 4: way back on VHS and now to see it of
- 1:28:27Speaker 4: wore K is just such an experience. I mean, they
- 1:28:30Speaker 4: put a lot of love and effort into restoring it.
- 1:28:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:28:35Speaker 4: Now, speaking of horror, like, has your taste in horror
- 1:28:37Speaker 4: evolved as you've gotten older or do you still chase
- 1:28:40Speaker 4: like I guess, like the same thrills that first hooked you,
- 1:28:44Speaker 4: like you know, those those first initial horror movies you saw.
- 1:28:47Speaker 6: It's an interesting question.
- 1:28:48Speaker 3: I think for the most part, I still just like everything.
- 1:28:56Speaker 3: I've never really subscribed to any particular. Like a good
- 1:28:59Speaker 3: movie is a movie, you know. I you know, like
- 1:29:03Speaker 3: I'm less inclined to absorb every slasher movie that hits
- 1:29:08Speaker 3: the scene because slashers are not my thing in a
- 1:29:12Speaker 3: big way. So it's like it's really got to be
- 1:29:13Speaker 3: a good one, and the good ones I love to death. Yeah, Well,
- 1:29:18Speaker 3: you know it's mostly for me, always been body or
- 1:29:20Speaker 3: I really love creature features and just like fantastical stuff
- 1:29:27Speaker 3: like Terror Vision, the movie Love That, Oh yeah, yep,
- 1:29:31Speaker 3: killer Clowns. I mean, those are like my favorite kind
- 1:29:34Speaker 3: of projects. But I think there is there's a good
- 1:29:37Speaker 3: amount of movies that I didn't appreciate it as when
- 1:29:40Speaker 3: I was younger that I go back and watch now
- 1:29:44Speaker 3: and have a huge appreciation for because I think of
- 1:29:47Speaker 3: mature a little bit in my taste.
- 1:29:49Speaker 4: Do you think that some of the films that you're
- 1:29:52Speaker 4: referring to is it Do you think it's because they're
- 1:29:54Speaker 4: a little bit more accessible now with you know, let's say,
- 1:29:58Speaker 4: you know, Blu Rays and four K's putting a spylight
- 1:30:01Speaker 4: or like a spotlight on some of these these maybe
- 1:30:03Speaker 4: lesser known horror movies.
- 1:30:05Speaker 6: Yeah, I think that's a big part of it.
- 1:30:07Speaker 3: And I mean that's that's something so cool about like
- 1:30:10Speaker 3: what happened in the eighties and the early nineties is
- 1:30:13Speaker 3: like there was such an unbelievable like wave of movies
- 1:30:18Speaker 3: and like direct to video things that it's just an
- 1:30:23Speaker 3: endless well you'd like, you know, just when I see
- 1:30:26Speaker 3: something like Terror Vision or Tammy and the t Rex
- 1:30:28Speaker 3: and I'm like, we're Spooky's and I'm just like how
- 1:30:32Speaker 3: did I not know about this movie? How has this
- 1:30:35Speaker 3: not been in my my rewatch catalog since I was
- 1:30:38Speaker 3: a kid. And then sure enough the following year they
- 1:30:42Speaker 3: put out something else that blows me away that I
- 1:30:45Speaker 3: had no idea, just that you know, it just never ends.
- 1:30:49Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean Chris, I mean him and I have
- 1:30:52Speaker 4: talked about it with like the Limberto Bava box sets
- 1:30:55Speaker 4: that we've gotten this past year, and it's just so
- 1:30:58Speaker 4: cool to see these lesser new films maybe didn't have
- 1:31:02Speaker 4: the right level of exposure or the right audience for them,
- 1:31:04Speaker 4: and now these boutique labels are putting out these movies
- 1:31:08Speaker 4: and probably the most premiere format that we would ever
- 1:31:11Speaker 4: get them in. So yeah, I feel like they've definitely
- 1:31:15Speaker 4: come a long way in that regards.
- 1:31:16Speaker 5: Sometimes not as deserving. There's definitely some movies that get
- 1:31:19Speaker 5: like the most gorgeous release and you watch it you're like, ah,
- 1:31:22Speaker 5: I don't think I don't know why I paid sixty dollars.
- 1:31:25Speaker 4: For that, right right, right.
- 1:31:28Speaker 5: There's always somebody who's gonna love it, and that's great
- 1:31:30Speaker 5: for them.
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: You know.
- 1:31:31Speaker 3: Yeah, Yeah, I've took a couple of swings like that
- 1:31:35Speaker 3: and ended up regretting it.
- 1:31:40Speaker 4: Now, Anthony, if you could pick a double feature any
- 1:31:45Speaker 4: horror film with wrong Man, what would it be?
- 1:31:48Speaker 3: Oh? Man, I used to have such a good answer
- 1:31:51Speaker 3: to this.
- 1:31:52Speaker 6: I haven't thought about it in a.
- 1:31:53Speaker 5: While, trying to think of what I would put with it. Honestly, bro,
- 1:32:00Speaker 5: it would be a party if I put on Frogman
- 1:32:02Speaker 5: and then Mac and me.
- 1:32:04Speaker 3: Oh yeah, it was gonna kill me because I know
- 1:32:08Speaker 3: I used to have a great answer for this.
- 1:32:10Speaker 6: Whoops.
- 1:32:13Speaker 3: But I mean it is like very lovecrafty and inspired,
- 1:32:17Speaker 3: So I think pairing it up with like Dagon would
- 1:32:22Speaker 3: be interesting because then you would be able to see
- 1:32:24Speaker 3: the the inspiration we took from that story.
- 1:32:29Speaker 5: That's what I was thinking when you said when you
- 1:32:31Speaker 5: said Lovecraft, I was like, oh, maybe it might pay
- 1:32:33Speaker 5: a Dagon really good. Yeah, yeah, that's a good one.
- 1:32:37Speaker 4: Man.
- 1:32:37Speaker 5: We need a nice release of Dagon. Get that resta
- 1:32:40Speaker 5: on video one out of here, a new one.
- 1:32:42Speaker 4: We're manifesting it. So obviously after the response of Frogman,
- 1:32:48Speaker 4: when did you first start thinking about a sequel?
- 1:32:54Speaker 3: I you know, I never seriously thought we'd do a
- 1:32:57Speaker 3: sequel until it was pretty quick after it hit vod
- 1:33:01Speaker 3: and and and did pretty well. That rodding press hit
- 1:33:05Speaker 3: me up and we're like, okay, do you want to
- 1:33:06Speaker 3: make a sequel? But I'd say from the moment we
- 1:33:11Speaker 3: kind of locked the movie, m we started for fun
- 1:33:16Speaker 3: thinking about like, well, what would happen next? You know, Yeah,
- 1:33:19Speaker 3: and that's kind of when it was like, well, I
- 1:33:21Speaker 3: mean Dallas has the lawn. That's where we started, like
- 1:33:23Speaker 3: what's that mean? And yeah, I can't I can't wait
- 1:33:27Speaker 3: to put some special features together for Frogment Returns because
- 1:33:29Speaker 3: I really want to dive into all the different directions
- 1:33:34Speaker 3: we talked about going that we didn't go with the sequel,
- 1:33:38Speaker 3: But yeah, I'd say like kind of the second we
- 1:33:40Speaker 3: we locked the movie and we're like, okay, we're done,
- 1:33:43Speaker 3: was kind of when we felt freed up to think
- 1:33:44Speaker 3: about what would come next.
- 1:33:47Speaker 4: Yeah. I was gonna say, I mean, even with the
- 1:33:49Speaker 4: experience of making Frogman Returns, how did that feel different
- 1:33:53Speaker 4: compared to the original? Like, was it you know, you
- 1:33:56Speaker 4: felt a little bit more seasoned with with taking on
- 1:33:58Speaker 4: the project or yeah.
- 1:34:01Speaker 3: I mean I think we all entered Frogmen Returns with
- 1:34:04Speaker 3: a lot more confidence, you know. I mean the first
- 1:34:09Speaker 3: one is just such a scary process of being like
- 1:34:11Speaker 3: we don't know what we're doing. We don't know if
- 1:34:13Speaker 3: this is gonna work and it's gonna turn out, if
- 1:34:15Speaker 3: anyone's gonna care. So, you know, it was kind of
- 1:34:18Speaker 3: nice to to make a movie and know like this
- 1:34:22Speaker 3: has an audience, you know, like hopefully, hopefully it'll find
- 1:34:25Speaker 3: an even bigger audience than the first one, but like
- 1:34:28Speaker 3: we know that people that like the first one are
- 1:34:30Speaker 3: gonna want to see this, so that's kind of cool.
- 1:34:33Speaker 3: You're at least almost like halfway to success right off
- 1:34:36Speaker 3: the kate, which also felt you know, we felt freer
- 1:34:40Speaker 3: to take some big swings and try some weird stuff
- 1:34:43Speaker 3: in this one.
- 1:34:44Speaker 6: But I learned a lot of lessons on the first one.
- 1:34:47Speaker 3: I've been making movies for you know, short films for
- 1:34:50Speaker 3: a long time, working on other people's features, but that
- 1:34:53Speaker 3: was my first feature and my first fountain footage project.
- 1:34:58Speaker 3: And you're just you're not ready. You're not ready for
- 1:35:03Speaker 3: found footage until you just dive into it and you
- 1:35:05Speaker 3: learn the hard way everything that can manage with it.
- 1:35:08Speaker 3: You know, it is like it's the easier kind of
- 1:35:10Speaker 3: movie to make, is the cheaper kind of movie to make,
- 1:35:12Speaker 3: but to make it good it is really really hard.
- 1:35:17Speaker 3: So going into the second one, it was like, Okay,
- 1:35:19Speaker 3: I think we need more of a crew. I don't
- 1:35:21Speaker 3: want to shoot this one myself. I want a DP,
- 1:35:25Speaker 3: you know, I need an AD that's going to help
- 1:35:27Speaker 3: me build out the schedule so we don't, you know,
- 1:35:31Speaker 3: shoot for ten days and not have an entire movie
- 1:35:34Speaker 3: like we did on the first one, you know, stuff
- 1:35:36Speaker 3: like that.
- 1:35:38Speaker 6: Having a VFX supervisor on set it was a huge help.
- 1:35:44Speaker 3: That's something we could have used on the first one too,
- 1:35:46Speaker 3: and maybe we could have added more VFX where I
- 1:35:48Speaker 3: wanted it. But then this one has so much more.
- 1:35:52Speaker 3: I think it's one hundred and twenty VFVX shots, So
- 1:35:54Speaker 3: it was like, we need someone on set that knows
- 1:35:56Speaker 3: what they're doing because I don't. I don't know how
- 1:36:00Speaker 3: to capture what you need to make this shot work. Yeah,
- 1:36:03Speaker 3: so it's I think funny enough. I think we ended
- 1:36:07Speaker 3: up having less people on set for frog Fan too,
- 1:36:11Speaker 3: but it was like a more refined crew, so everything
- 1:36:16Speaker 3: went a lot smoother.
- 1:36:18Speaker 4: I was going to ask you, like, did you experiment
- 1:36:20Speaker 4: with new filmmaking techniques for Frogman returns that, like you
- 1:36:24Speaker 4: didn't have the opportunity to do so with the first one.
- 1:36:29Speaker 3: Yeah, I think, you know, one of the biggest lessons
- 1:36:34Speaker 3: from doing the first one was like, it really would
- 1:36:37Speaker 3: be to our benefit to have two cameras rolling in
- 1:36:41Speaker 3: all times. Yeah, because when you've got these long scenes
- 1:36:45Speaker 3: and you only have one camera, you have to find
- 1:36:48Speaker 3: like strategic ways of cutting or you're just stuck with
- 1:36:53Speaker 3: one take, no matter how long it is, no matter
- 1:36:57Speaker 3: if it's like got a good piece here and a
- 1:36:58Speaker 3: bad piece there, like you're stuck with it. So we
- 1:37:02Speaker 3: did work in different cameras and I think, let's see,
- 1:37:10Speaker 3: I think we go through we go through five different
- 1:37:12Speaker 3: types of cameras. Okay in Frogman Returns, which I thought
- 1:37:18Speaker 3: is pretty fun. I don't think it's like jarring in
- 1:37:22Speaker 3: a bad way, but I just thought, yeah, cool if
- 1:37:24Speaker 3: like as the story progress, we keep introducing like a
- 1:37:28Speaker 3: new lens to see the story through. So that was fun.
- 1:37:33Speaker 5: That's why I appreciate seconds like putting out the festival
- 1:37:35Speaker 5: cut of blair Witch, because they restore all of the
- 1:37:40Speaker 5: is it sixty moment they shot all the interviews on,
- 1:37:43Speaker 5: and it gives a nice contrast from the super eight
- 1:37:45Speaker 5: or the high eight to the sixty. The really clean
- 1:37:48Speaker 5: sixty meters footage they add.
- 1:37:50Speaker 3: Yeah, that's so I really really want to try playing
- 1:37:52Speaker 3: with film. That's something that we haven't done yet. And
- 1:37:54Speaker 3: I do have an idea for a Frogman prequel that
- 1:37:58Speaker 3: would be like an period piece, and I think it'd
- 1:38:00Speaker 3: be fun to shoot that on like sixteen or eight.
- 1:38:03Speaker 3: But to your uh, to expand on your question, one
- 1:38:07Speaker 3: of the cameras that we shoot Frogman Returns.
- 1:38:09Speaker 6: On is are three to sixty camera.
- 1:38:12Speaker 3: That was something that I guess someone's probably used it
- 1:38:16Speaker 3: in a found footage movie, but I haven't personally seen
- 1:38:19Speaker 3: it yet. So I thought that'd be fun to play with.
- 1:38:22Speaker 4: That's awesome. And now with Frogman Returns, you know where
- 1:38:27Speaker 4: there's certain aspects as far as with the mythology that
- 1:38:30Speaker 4: you wanted to build on that you initially had introduced
- 1:38:32Speaker 4: in the first film. Yeah, it was like without spoilers obviously.
- 1:38:38Speaker 3: But yeah, it was a I mean, it was a
- 1:38:40Speaker 3: tricky situation because I knew I wanted to introduce some
- 1:38:44Speaker 3: new cryptids in Frogman Returns, and I, at least behind
- 1:38:51Speaker 3: the scenes, wanted to understand more of like where he
- 1:38:53Speaker 3: came from and like, okay, if we do introduce other cryptids,
- 1:38:58Speaker 3: like how are they all connected?
- 1:39:00Speaker 6: You know, like what is what is the larger story here?
- 1:39:04Speaker 6: So we went through a lot of world building behind.
- 1:39:08Speaker 3: The scenes that you know you're not going to see
- 1:39:10Speaker 3: in the movie, that you know, if we get into
- 1:39:12Speaker 3: a third movie, you'll start to find out more. But
- 1:39:16Speaker 3: we at least want to lay the foundations, so we
- 1:39:18Speaker 3: knew that whatever ends up in Fragment Returns doesn't like
- 1:39:23Speaker 3: fundamentally go against that.
- 1:39:27Speaker 6: Like logic that we're trying to establish.
- 1:39:31Speaker 5: Dude, I'm so excited. I'm so excited for.
- 1:39:36Speaker 3: Now.
- 1:39:37Speaker 4: Was there a different type of atmosphere that you were
- 1:39:39Speaker 4: aiming to create with this one compared to the first?
- 1:39:43Speaker 3: Yeah, I think, uh, even more Spielbergian.
- 1:39:47Speaker 4: Oh okay, it's nice man, I know right.
- 1:39:51Speaker 3: Yeah, it's very much like in adventure sci fi story
- 1:39:58Speaker 3: more so than a horrors Yeah. And and like I said, like,
- 1:40:03Speaker 3: you know, if this is Evil Dead too, if we
- 1:40:07Speaker 3: get to make a third one, I really want the
- 1:40:09Speaker 3: third one to be like an army of darkness. So
- 1:40:13Speaker 3: I just want to go even crazier. And I've been
- 1:40:15Speaker 3: on like a huge like Sword and Sandals and Fantasy
- 1:40:18Speaker 3: Kick lately. Yeah. Yeah, I think I think Frogman three
- 1:40:26Speaker 3: would be like a Masters of the Universe.
- 1:40:30Speaker 4: Dude, I'm down for it.
- 1:40:31Speaker 5: I'm so here for that. And it sounds incredibly appropriate
- 1:40:35Speaker 5: for the franchise too, Like it doesn't. It's not out
- 1:40:37Speaker 5: of left field. It feels like it would make perfect sense.
- 1:40:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I feel like we I think this is definitely
- 1:40:43Speaker 3: a bridge movie too. I think by the time you
- 1:40:46Speaker 3: get to the end of Frogman Returns, you could you
- 1:40:48Speaker 3: could see it going in that direction. But yeah, I
- 1:40:51Speaker 3: don't know. I just think it'd be super fun if.
- 1:40:54Speaker 3: I really love series where each movie kind of tries
- 1:40:58Speaker 3: something drastically different or enters a new genre, you know.
- 1:41:01Speaker 3: I think the the Chucky series is so strong because
- 1:41:06Speaker 3: of that, you know.
- 1:41:08Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a good point.
- 1:41:09Speaker 5: The Chucky franchise is kind of incredible that it's still
- 1:41:12Speaker 5: holding on the way it is, like there's been so
- 1:41:14Speaker 5: many Child's play one, two, and three are pretty you know,
- 1:41:19Speaker 5: but then Bride is completely new, Seed is completely new. Yeah,
- 1:41:26Speaker 5: and then you have it went right back to the
- 1:41:28Speaker 5: Dark with Colton Curse, and then the TV show like
- 1:41:31Speaker 5: was kind of a culmination of all of that.
- 1:41:34Speaker 3: I think what it really has going that I don't
- 1:41:37Speaker 3: know if any other series does, is it's had a
- 1:41:39Speaker 3: consistent creator behind the scenes, since that's getting you know,
- 1:41:44Speaker 3: it's he hasn't always been the director, but he's always
- 1:41:47Speaker 3: been there guiding the franchise in the story.
- 1:41:51Speaker 6: And I think.
- 1:41:53Speaker 3: I mean, just speaking from like, Okay, we're gonna do
- 1:41:55Speaker 3: frog Man two. How are we going to make this
- 1:41:57Speaker 3: interesting for ourselves because we don't want to make the
- 1:41:59Speaker 3: same movie again, thinking about how crazy Frogman three would
- 1:42:02Speaker 3: be because we don't want to do the same thing again.
- 1:42:04Speaker 3: I think that just happens, you know, Like and I
- 1:42:06Speaker 3: think that's why you get very formulaic franchises when you
- 1:42:10Speaker 3: have a new director every time, because they're just like, Okay,
- 1:42:14Speaker 3: it's my trying to make a Prey the thirteenth. I'm
- 1:42:17Speaker 3: gonna just like have a new group of kids and
- 1:42:21Speaker 3: you know, give them a new bath. We're gonna do
- 1:42:23Speaker 3: the same thing we did last time, you know, because
- 1:42:25Speaker 3: they don't care.
- 1:42:26Speaker 5: See that that'd be so cool their teeth if they
- 1:42:29Speaker 5: just like something out of left field, like something so
- 1:42:31Speaker 5: new and they're like, hey, we're just gonna spin this
- 1:42:34Speaker 5: on its head. Yeah, I'll see where we land. Like
- 1:42:36Speaker 5: that's kind of what you're rooting for. I mean, in
- 1:42:38Speaker 5: a way you want to try it and true, but
- 1:42:42Speaker 5: also deep down you're like, I could I could do
- 1:42:44Speaker 5: with something new here?
- 1:42:45Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, you know, I mean there's a balance, you know,
- 1:42:48Speaker 3: because like I love what they tried to do with
- 1:42:53Speaker 3: Chasing Goes to Hell. Yeah, you know, so they take
- 1:42:57Speaker 3: that swing. But then for me, who love when movies,
- 1:43:01Speaker 3: when franchises to take crazy swings like that, there's not
- 1:43:03Speaker 3: enough in it to really make it a fright of
- 1:43:05Speaker 3: the Thirteenth movie.
- 1:43:07Speaker 5: No, it is like, yeah, we interviewed Adam Marcus and
- 1:43:11Speaker 5: we went for three hours nearly and h dude, like
- 1:43:17Speaker 5: our I think our combined love for Jason Goes to Hell,
- 1:43:20Speaker 5: you know, wasn't enough to drive that alone because I
- 1:43:22Speaker 5: love that movie definely.
- 1:43:25Speaker 4: Got a lot of love for the Evil Dead trilogy,
- 1:43:27Speaker 4: that's for sure.
- 1:43:28Speaker 5: Oh yeah, yeah, dude, the Evil Dead trilogy is I mean,
- 1:43:34Speaker 5: I love Evil Dead too. That's my favorite of them.
- 1:43:37Speaker 5: But any any day you put on any of them,
- 1:43:40Speaker 5: I'm there, like I'll show up.
- 1:43:42Speaker 3: Yeah, that's that's my my favorite franchise, hands down, for sure,
- 1:43:46Speaker 3: for sure.
- 1:43:48Speaker 4: So I was gonna ask, like, what excited you most
- 1:43:50Speaker 4: about bringing Frogman back to the screen.
- 1:43:54Speaker 3: I think too definitely make a new suit because you know,
- 1:44:02Speaker 3: I told the the SFX team when we were making
- 1:44:07Speaker 3: the first one, I was like, don't go too hard
- 1:44:11Speaker 3: on the first frog Man because we're you know, there's
- 1:44:12Speaker 3: gonna be every time he shows up, the camera's gonna
- 1:44:15Speaker 3: go crazy, it's gonna be glitching. We're shooting on you
- 1:44:18Speaker 3: know four ADP, you know, High eight, So there's gonna
- 1:44:22Speaker 3: be a lot of forgiveness there. And then when we
- 1:44:26Speaker 3: start talking about Frogman returns, it was like, there's not
- 1:44:29Speaker 3: really a reason. I mean a big thing about found
- 1:44:33Speaker 3: footage is for me justifying why the camera's rolling and
- 1:44:39Speaker 3: and so to that respect, like in the sequel, there
- 1:44:42Speaker 3: was no reason to shoot on High eight. Again, I
- 1:44:44Speaker 3: couldn't justify that. So we're shooting on like a digital,
- 1:44:48Speaker 3: a very nice digital camera. So I went to the
- 1:44:52Speaker 3: sat X team and I was like, Yo, there's gonna
- 1:44:54Speaker 3: be no forgiveness this time. This suit has to look badass.
- 1:44:58Speaker 3: We're gonna hold on it. We're gonna see Frogman in
- 1:45:00Speaker 3: all his glory.
- 1:45:02Speaker 6: And they really delivered.
- 1:45:04Speaker 3: I mean, this thing looks incredible, and I mean, as
- 1:45:06Speaker 3: of right, we're we're kind of playing with adding glitches
- 1:45:09Speaker 3: here and there, but as of right now, there's no glitches.
- 1:45:12Speaker 6: In the movie, so you you just see everything that happens.
- 1:45:16Speaker 4: Oh yeah, I was gonna ask you, I mean, how
- 1:45:20Speaker 4: do you how do you keep Frogman like, you know,
- 1:45:23Speaker 4: just as scary as he was a second time around
- 1:45:25Speaker 4: for this film.
- 1:45:29Speaker 3: I don't know if we did. To be completely honest,
- 1:45:32Speaker 3: I guess I never I never found him scary in
- 1:45:36Speaker 3: the first place, So maybe that wasn't something I was
- 1:45:38Speaker 3: trying to withhold or you know, hold on to. But
- 1:45:45Speaker 3: I mean what was important to me when when like
- 1:45:48Speaker 3: exploring the Frogman character further, was like, what is he
- 1:45:52Speaker 3: all about? What are what are his intentions? Why is
- 1:45:56Speaker 3: he here? Why does he have his cults? Why is
- 1:45:59Speaker 3: he reading with them?
- 1:46:04Speaker 6: Where does this.
- 1:46:05Speaker 3: Magic come from? And we don't really answer any of
- 1:46:09Speaker 3: that stuff in this movie, but like I figured out
- 1:46:12Speaker 3: the answers to those things so that I knew where
- 1:46:15Speaker 3: this character was coming from. So I mean that's what
- 1:46:19Speaker 3: was really fun to me, was like, Okay, now we
- 1:46:21Speaker 3: know he's got a wand and he's magical. What can
- 1:46:24Speaker 3: the wand do you know? We saw it shoot sparks?
- 1:46:27Speaker 3: What else can it do? So that that was a
- 1:46:30Speaker 3: big thing to me was like, all right, every time
- 1:46:31Speaker 3: the wand gets used, can we kind of mix it
- 1:46:34Speaker 3: up a little bit.
- 1:46:35Speaker 5: I feel like the the humans as part of the
- 1:46:39Speaker 5: cult could actually be scarier than frogmned because a lot
- 1:46:44Speaker 5: of times it's like it would I would think it
- 1:46:47Speaker 5: would be like their whatever their intentions are, their abuses
- 1:46:52Speaker 5: are towards him, are more terrifying than what Frogman's doing.
- 1:46:57Speaker 5: Totally mean, like they're kind of like the fuel that's
- 1:47:01Speaker 5: just burning this fire and whatever, their intentions are much
- 1:47:04Speaker 5: scarier than Frogman existing, you know what I mean.
- 1:47:07Speaker 6: Yeah, I think you're totally right.
- 1:47:10Speaker 3: Yeah, the cult'spin is a tough nut to crack for
- 1:47:13Speaker 3: us to like figure out how to how to approach them.
- 1:47:16Speaker 3: I mean, this movie overall like has a pretty like
- 1:47:19Speaker 3: fun can't be like somewhat comedic tones. I don't know
- 1:47:24Speaker 3: if we if we made the Cult necessarily scary, but
- 1:47:28Speaker 3: I think we did approach it with that idea of like,
- 1:47:30Speaker 3: who are these fucking weirdos that are you know, that
- 1:47:34Speaker 3: frog the Underground and.
- 1:47:37Speaker 5: It's like the Colton James gun Scooby Doo.
- 1:47:40Speaker 3: Yeah right, I mean that's what if we did do this,
- 1:47:44Speaker 3: this frog Man prequel that's kind of what I picture.
- 1:47:46Speaker 3: It's like, could we set it in like the seventies
- 1:47:48Speaker 3: and could it be more of like a satanic panic type? Oh?
- 1:47:53Speaker 4: Yeah, I like that.
- 1:47:56Speaker 5: Yeah, dude, you do like a riff on Spooky Island,
- 1:47:59Speaker 5: you know what I mean? And something here we go. Man,
- 1:48:03Speaker 5: we're building Frogman three, right.
- 1:48:04Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:48:07Speaker 4: And lastly, I was gonna ask you did working on
- 1:48:09Speaker 4: the sequel change the way you personally think about the
- 1:48:12Speaker 4: Frogman legend, like the real world legend. I guess whether
- 1:48:18Speaker 4: it's like the world or what you've crafted, you know,
- 1:48:20Speaker 4: between the two films, I.
- 1:48:25Speaker 6: Am really fascinated with, like the real world legend.
- 1:48:28Speaker 3: And yeah, I mean if you read into like the
- 1:48:31Speaker 3: the first hand encounters of this thing, it is just
- 1:48:34Speaker 3: like what is going on here? And I love this
- 1:48:39Speaker 3: That region in general, like West Virginia, Southern Ohio, Kentucky.
- 1:48:45Speaker 3: There was so much weird shit going on and it
- 1:48:48Speaker 3: is like you look at a like a map of
- 1:48:50Speaker 3: the United States and like cryptid sightings in UFO sightings,
- 1:48:53Speaker 3: and it's like, without a doubt, the hotspot. There's so
- 1:48:57Speaker 3: much going on in that area, and there's this cave
- 1:49:01Speaker 3: system that runs underneath all of that is one of
- 1:49:03Speaker 3: the biggest cave systems in the world, the Mammoth caves,
- 1:49:07Speaker 3: And I mean in indigenous legends and like all sorts
- 1:49:11Speaker 3: of ancient history cultures have have hypothesized that caves can
- 1:49:17Speaker 3: be portals to other worlds and other dimensions and stuff.
- 1:49:20Speaker 3: And so I mean that's well, there's there's a there's
- 1:49:23Speaker 3: a little peek into the the mythology that we've been
- 1:49:26Speaker 3: building is like just going off, going off that, Like
- 1:49:29Speaker 3: I think that's where cryptids have found a gateway to
- 1:49:33Speaker 3: our world is through that cave system, and that's why
- 1:49:37Speaker 3: that's such a hot spot. But yeah, so I mean, yeah,
- 1:49:40Speaker 3: I guess it's changed the way I look at the
- 1:49:43Speaker 3: legend in real world and with what we're creating, because
- 1:49:46Speaker 3: we just I don't I don't ever feel with beholden
- 1:49:50Speaker 3: to keeping it within the reality of our world.
- 1:49:55Speaker 6: I want to do what's interesting to us and what's
- 1:49:57Speaker 6: best for the story.
- 1:49:58Speaker 3: But like I am constant reading you know, first hand
- 1:50:03Speaker 3: encounters and UFO encounters and like all that kind of
- 1:50:07Speaker 3: stuff to just see like, okay, what does exist within
- 1:50:10Speaker 3: our world that we can kind of use as a
- 1:50:11Speaker 3: baseline and a starting point.
- 1:50:15Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, And I know this is kind of off topic.
- 1:50:19Speaker 4: I just figured this was probably the best way to close.
- 1:50:21Speaker 4: But are there certain horror movies you can suggest for
- 1:50:25Speaker 4: listeners to check out leading up to Halloween?
- 1:50:32Speaker 3: I love wait, let me look at my letterbox.
- 1:50:38Speaker 4: I mean, that's always the way to do it, right.
- 1:50:40Speaker 5: I love one that nobody talks about that I love
- 1:50:43Speaker 5: is the anthology movie Tales of Halloween.
- 1:50:46Speaker 3: Oh my god, Tails of Halloween is so good.
- 1:50:48Speaker 5: Yeah, nobody ever talks about it. And I overpaid for
- 1:50:50Speaker 5: that like four disc deluxe Blu ray I have because
- 1:50:53Speaker 5: it was like out of front. Nobody talks about it.
- 1:50:56Speaker 3: That's awesome. Satan's Little Helper is low fi. Yeah, such
- 1:51:05Speaker 3: a fun movie. I feel like that's another one that
- 1:51:08Speaker 3: is somewhat of a precursor to a terrifier and like
- 1:51:13Speaker 3: not in like There's It's not a very gory movie,
- 1:51:16Speaker 3: but I feel like the character in Saint loul Helper
- 1:51:19Speaker 3: has like that same kind of like sadistic trickster energy
- 1:51:24Speaker 3: that Art the Clown does. I love that one. Idle
- 1:51:28Speaker 3: Hands is another one that I love that actually takes
- 1:51:30Speaker 3: place on Halloween. And then speaking of like bizarre movies,
- 1:51:34Speaker 3: that's like, how the hell did I never know this existed?
- 1:51:36Speaker 3: Last year at Knoxville Horror Film Fest, they played Haunted
- 1:51:40Speaker 3: Ween from nineteen ninety one. Yeah, and oh my god,
- 1:51:45Speaker 3: we had so much fun with that movie. It is
- 1:51:48Speaker 3: so bad and so awesome.
- 1:51:50Speaker 5: What's set that that just come out? And it came
- 1:51:52Speaker 5: out in the Homegrown Horrors.
- 1:51:54Speaker 4: Yes, yep, that's from Vineger syndrome.
- 1:51:56Speaker 5: Niger syndrome. Yeah, Haunted. What a great name. Haunted.
- 1:51:59Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, brilliant.
- 1:52:00Speaker 4: It doesn't get much better than that.
- 1:52:02Speaker 5: We just watched one called The Haunting Season from like
- 1:52:05Speaker 5: twenty twenty four. It's like a haunted house slash. That
- 1:52:10Speaker 5: was pretty good. A favorite of mine is always Haunt
- 1:52:13Speaker 5: from twenty.
- 1:52:14Speaker 3: Oh like a haunted attraction.
- 1:52:19Speaker 5: Yeah, I've never seen that.
- 1:52:21Speaker 3: Haunt.
- 1:52:21Speaker 5: Its great. That's from what is it? Brian Woods and
- 1:52:24Speaker 5: Scott Beck. I think I always get there too. Nicks
- 1:52:27Speaker 5: mixed up. Yeah, Tales of Halloween. Trick or Treat I
- 1:52:32Speaker 5: think is a kind of a you know, you have
- 1:52:34Speaker 5: to watch Trick or Treat. We're we're doing right now
- 1:52:37Speaker 5: Halloween four. We're doing a Thorn trilogy and then I'll
- 1:52:40Speaker 5: go back and do Halloween into closer to you know.
- 1:52:44Speaker 5: But we're gonna be doing dude. We're diving into sleep
- 1:52:47Speaker 5: away camp here in the next couple of weeks. So
- 1:52:50Speaker 5: excited about that.
- 1:52:51Speaker 3: That's a fun Franchi speaking of a franchise that like evolves,
- 1:52:54Speaker 3: it goes to some weird ass places.
- 1:52:57Speaker 4: That's an understatement.
- 1:53:00Speaker 3: Another one I'll throw out because it came out and
- 1:53:03Speaker 3: I haven't seen like nearly enough love for it.
- 1:53:05Speaker 6: Strange Harvest.
- 1:53:07Speaker 3: Yes, there's a new found footage movie that I think
- 1:53:10Speaker 3: is really fantastic.
- 1:53:12Speaker 5: Yeah, it was a good one from last year, last
- 1:53:16Speaker 5: year or the year before. I don't know, time isn't real.
- 1:53:19Speaker 5: David Slade movie called Dark Harvest that was great. I
- 1:53:23Speaker 5: don't know. It kind of like got buried on VOD
- 1:53:27Speaker 5: But it was an adaptation of a book and it
- 1:53:29Speaker 5: takes place scoring Halloween and it's these kids and like
- 1:53:33Speaker 5: I think it's the late fifties to every Halloween have
- 1:53:36Speaker 5: to kill a pumpkin creature before it reaches like the
- 1:53:41Speaker 5: capital of the small town.
- 1:53:44Speaker 3: That sounds awesome.
- 1:53:45Speaker 5: Yeah, it's called it's called Dark Harvest. David Slade, who
- 1:53:47Speaker 5: directed Thirty Days of Night, directed it. Oh shit, yeah,
- 1:53:51Speaker 5: it kind of got buried. Man, it's a lot of fun.
- 1:53:53Speaker 5: It's got like that cool greaser energy because everyone in
- 1:53:56Speaker 5: it is like, you know, leather leather bound greasers. But
- 1:53:59Speaker 5: that one's a little.
- 1:54:00Speaker 4: Yeah, Anthony, have you have you seen Hollowgate through Terror Vision?
- 1:54:05Speaker 3: No?
- 1:54:06Speaker 4: Oh, that's great, Chris. Are you fan of that one?
- 1:54:08Speaker 5: I haven't seen it?
- 1:54:10Speaker 4: Oh, it's so good. Hollowgate, Yeah, nineteen eighty eight.
- 1:54:15Speaker 5: Okay, was that another one of the Oh terror Vision
- 1:54:17Speaker 5: put that out? I remember the cover of my ahead.
- 1:54:19Speaker 5: That's right.
- 1:54:20Speaker 4: It's like one of my favorites from them, perfect for
- 1:54:23Speaker 4: this time of year. All right, Chris, any any closing
- 1:54:28Speaker 4: thoughts or anything you wanted to add at all? Uh?
- 1:54:32Speaker 5: I mean very stoked for a new Frogman movie. Very excited,
- 1:54:39Speaker 5: is there? So it's going to go through its premiere?
- 1:54:43Speaker 5: Is there any talks of like limited theatrical release or
- 1:54:46Speaker 5: anything at all for it that?
- 1:54:48Speaker 3: Yeah, we're definitely definitely want that to happen. We're having
- 1:54:52Speaker 3: a meeting on Tuesday actually to start talking about, Okay,
- 1:54:56Speaker 3: how we're going to roll this movie out publicly after
- 1:54:59Speaker 3: after festival run. So nice.
- 1:55:01Speaker 6: Yeah, hopefully we have some some news on that soon.
- 1:55:04Speaker 3: It feels really good kind of having terror Vision involved
- 1:55:08Speaker 3: from the get go on this one instead of coming
- 1:55:11Speaker 3: on you know, later in the process, because I think
- 1:55:13Speaker 3: they're really smart about how to go about distribution.
- 1:55:16Speaker 5: So yeah, yeah, well hopefully we can. I'm sure we're
- 1:55:21Speaker 5: gonna be able to do some coverage if especially if
- 1:55:24Speaker 5: a physical media release comes out, which I'm sure will
- 1:55:26Speaker 5: because our network are our podcast. Our network we're on
- 1:55:32Speaker 5: is someone's favorite productions and Ryan and will work for
- 1:55:36Speaker 5: Terror Vision to produce bonus features and stuff like that.
