- 0:07Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Schreger as a production of the
- 0:09Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio. What's up, everybody, It's the
- 0:24Speaker 1: Season with Peter Schreger. I'm Peter Schreger. So fired up
- 0:29Speaker 1: to be with you again this week with another podcast episode.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Last week we had on Paul Rudd, the comedian, the actor,
- 0:37Speaker 1: the Chiefs fan, and the response has been awesome. I'm
- 0:40Speaker 1: joined here by my guy, Aaron. Aaron as our producer
- 0:45Speaker 1: extraordinaire who was here for the Rudd podcast. What what
- 0:48Speaker 1: was your favorite moment and what has been the takeaway
- 0:50Speaker 1: since we've had him on last week and gave us
- 0:53Speaker 1: ninety minutes of his time. I loved it. He was incredible,
- 0:57Speaker 1: not only like on talking about the other celebs that
- 1:00Speaker 1: you called out, I mean I loved the fact that
- 1:04Speaker 1: um talking about the Broadway show he did and he's like,
- 1:06Speaker 1: oh yeah, and then just the other guy who was
- 1:07Speaker 1: in the show with me, you know, Bradley Cooper. It
- 1:10Speaker 1: was just like he was so good. And then he
- 1:13Speaker 1: had so many great stories about the Chiefs players that
- 1:16Speaker 1: he knew too, and like hearing about his interactions with
- 1:20Speaker 1: Mahomes parents and with Kelsey. I mean it was. He
- 1:23Speaker 1: was great, good dude too, And I think that's the
- 1:25Speaker 1: goldest podcast. Let's get to know these people, not just
- 1:29Speaker 1: you know, let's promote your latest, you know, television show whatever.
- 1:31Speaker 1: That's it. The new ant Man trailer came out, Guys.
- 1:34Speaker 1: I'll be honest. I'm not a huge Marvel Universe or
- 1:37Speaker 1: DC Comics guy, but the new ant Man trailer had
- 1:39Speaker 1: a little Elton John Goodbye yellow Brick road in the background.
- 1:43Speaker 1: And I don't know, Aaron, did you see it yet?
- 1:45Speaker 1: Did see the ant Man trailer? I did. I saw
- 1:47Speaker 1: it twice yesterday. Yeah. Bill Murray's in it, like just
- 1:50Speaker 1: a quick shot at him, quick shot easter egg. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:54Speaker 1: I had a crazy weekend. I fly out to LA
- 1:58Speaker 1: from New York every single week and I filmed for
- 2:00Speaker 1: Fox on the Fox NFL kickoff show. And I usually
- 2:03Speaker 1: fly in on a Saturday morning, have a quiet Saturday
- 2:06Speaker 1: doing work, and then Sunday I do the Fox pregame
- 2:08Speaker 1: show when I fly back to New York and watch
- 2:10Speaker 1: the games on a plane. Saturday was the Rams bye
- 2:13Speaker 1: week and I was texting with their coach, Sean McVeigh,
- 2:16Speaker 1: and he was like, why don't you come by the
- 2:17Speaker 1: house and let's just watch college football and hang on Saturday.
- 2:20Speaker 1: I'm like, all right, gotta do it. Awesome, awesome Saturday.
- 2:24Speaker 1: But I think what you'd find most interesting is that,
- 2:26Speaker 1: like how little he wanted to talk football, how little
- 2:30Speaker 1: he wanted to get into the Rams woes, how little
- 2:32Speaker 1: he wanted to fixate on next week's opponent, the forty
- 2:34Speaker 1: nine ers, how little he wanted to get into the
- 2:36Speaker 1: Christian McCaffrey trade, which, by the way, I think the
- 2:38Speaker 1: Rams were a lot closer than the rest of us
- 2:41Speaker 1: were giving off on TV on Friday and Saturday. But
- 2:46Speaker 1: for your love, Aaron of just entertainment all things. So,
- 2:49Speaker 1: like we're a couple hours into hanging a couple drinks
- 2:52Speaker 1: and his wife, Veronica is amazing, and she comes by
- 2:54Speaker 1: and she's like, do you guys want to watch like
- 2:56Speaker 1: a show like I got the Yankee game on, We've
- 3:00Speaker 1: got Oklahoma State Texas And I'm like yeah, And they're like, well,
- 3:03Speaker 1: what show do you want to watch? And McVeigh is like, nothing,
- 3:07Speaker 1: you know, no more you know, serial killer, mass murder
- 3:09Speaker 1: or true crime. I'm not looking for that. What I
- 3:11Speaker 1: was like, well, I've got a murder show, but it's
- 3:13Speaker 1: more like comedy than murder. So he had never seen
- 3:16Speaker 1: White Lotus. She had never seen White Lotus. Que up
- 3:19Speaker 1: White Lotus if you want to ask what a wild
- 3:21Speaker 1: night in LA with the hottest couple in the city is, like,
- 3:24Speaker 1: we watched four hours worth of White Lotus, just just
- 3:28Speaker 1: just armand the the hotel manager just crushing it. Um.
- 3:34Speaker 1: It was awesome and it basically it was like nine
- 3:36Speaker 1: o'clock midnight Eastern. I'm like, all right, I gotta I
- 3:39Speaker 1: gotta go home, got an uber home, and you know,
- 3:41Speaker 1: the next day I'm on show. Then everyone's asked me,
- 3:43Speaker 1: what was it like hanging with Nick Bay? Where'd you go?
- 3:45Speaker 1: Would the TMZ We watched an HBO Prestige TV show
- 3:50Speaker 1: from a year ago. We just watched four hours of it,
- 3:52Speaker 1: like cuddling like a family. You binged four hours of
- 3:55Speaker 1: White Lotus. Did you skip the intro or did you
- 3:57Speaker 1: watch the intro every time? Well, skip the intro. He's
- 4:01Speaker 1: on the controls. Theme song is great and you get
- 4:04Speaker 1: the music and the visuals. But I'm talking about the
- 4:06Speaker 1: scenes from last week. And McVeigh is the kind of
- 4:10Speaker 1: guy who will never give up play calling. It's the
- 4:12Speaker 1: kind of guy that says, I'm going to take a
- 4:13Speaker 1: back seat, Like it's funny watching a TV show with
- 4:15Speaker 1: that guy because he's got to control the remote and
- 4:17Speaker 1: you know, he's got the whole hook up with his
- 4:19Speaker 1: around sound all this stuff. But I'll say this from
- 4:22Speaker 1: a football standpoint, like it's not as much dooming gloom
- 4:25Speaker 1: as I imagine. I thought I was gonna be going
- 4:26Speaker 1: over there, and I've known Sean for many years, and
- 4:30Speaker 1: I think he would say it. We're very close friends
- 4:32Speaker 1: and we talk a lot. But I thought I was
- 4:33Speaker 1: coming in and part of my hat was gonna be
- 4:35Speaker 1: like lifting him up and just telling him, you know,
- 4:38Speaker 1: you're three and three and look at the Niners. They're
- 4:39Speaker 1: three and three and you could beat the Seahawks and
- 4:41Speaker 1: all that stuff. And you know, whether I believe it
- 4:43Speaker 1: or not, playing that role, he wasn't looking for that.
- 4:46Speaker 1: He was in a good place, and I think he
- 4:48Speaker 1: knows there's eleven games left in the regular season and
- 4:50Speaker 1: a lot of this story has not been written. So
- 4:52Speaker 1: last year's rise was great and the wind was amazing
- 4:55Speaker 1: in the Super Bowl, but like, if they can pull
- 4:57Speaker 1: something out of what they are right now, that might
- 4:59Speaker 1: be an even greater coaching job from him, and I'm
- 5:01Speaker 1: not certain he can. I think the stack and the
- 5:03Speaker 1: chips are stacked against him in a lot of ways.
- 5:05Speaker 1: But gosh, and when you look at the NFC, Buccaneers
- 5:08Speaker 1: lose to the Panthers, the Packers lose to the Washington Commanders.
- 5:13Speaker 1: You've got the teams that everyone thought would be good,
- 5:15Speaker 1: the Niners at three and four, you know, besides the
- 5:19Speaker 1: Eagles at six and oh and maybe the Cowboys. Like
- 5:21Speaker 1: none of the teams that were written to be great
- 5:23Speaker 1: before the season have done anything. The Vikings are five
- 5:25Speaker 1: and one, and I don't even know what that team is.
- 5:28Speaker 1: So I think the Rams are still very much alive,
- 5:30Speaker 1: and I'll pick him against most of the coaches in
- 5:32Speaker 1: this league in a big spot. All right, Aaron, you're
- 5:34Speaker 1: ready for four downs? I am, all right, Let's go
- 5:38Speaker 1: fire away first down. Speaking of the NFC, who deserves
- 5:42Speaker 1: the most credit for what Seattle is doing right now?
- 5:45Speaker 1: Seattle is the best story in football if you ask me.
- 5:48Speaker 1: I know, we're in New York and Giants and Jets
- 5:50Speaker 1: are getting a lot of love, but no one, no
- 5:53Speaker 1: one had the Seahawks doing anything this year. Remember they
- 5:56Speaker 1: traded Russell Wilson in a fourth round pick and got
- 5:59Speaker 1: back Drew Locke, Shelby Harris Noah Fense twenty two first
- 6:05Speaker 1: round pick, which ended up being their star tackle, Charles Cross,
- 6:07Speaker 1: a twenty twenty two second round pick. They also got
- 6:10Speaker 1: a twenty twenty two fifth round pick. They also got
- 6:14Speaker 1: next year's first round pick. They also got next year's
- 6:17Speaker 1: second round pick. And what they end up doing they
- 6:19Speaker 1: hit home runs at every spot. I'm going to give
- 6:21Speaker 1: John Schneider, the longtime general manager, some credit here. As
- 6:26Speaker 1: much as we want to talk up Gino and we will,
- 6:29Speaker 1: Schneider looked at this thing. He had a nine man
- 6:31Speaker 1: draft class. He gets Terek Woolen one hundred and fifty
- 6:34Speaker 1: third over all, the guys todd to the league, league
- 6:36Speaker 1: and interceptions. He gets Kobe Bryant, Yes that's his name,
- 6:39Speaker 1: Kobe Bryant, who lined up across from Sauce Gardner at Cincinnati.
- 6:43Speaker 1: He's a starting corner, had a pick last week against
- 6:45Speaker 1: the Chargers. He gets two starting offensive tackles and Charles
- 6:49Speaker 1: Cross and Abraham Lucas. And then he gets Kenneth Walker,
- 6:52Speaker 1: who is the sensation of the league. Ran for about
- 6:55Speaker 1: one hundred and seventy three yards and put the game
- 6:56Speaker 1: on ice. With that touchdown against the Chargers, I think
- 7:00Speaker 1: the Seahawks front office deserves a lot of credit. And
- 7:02Speaker 1: Pete Carroll two, I mean Pete Carroll. He could have
- 7:05Speaker 1: easily packed it in to the Russell Wilson era. I've
- 7:07Speaker 1: been like, all right, I'm not here for the rebuild.
- 7:09Speaker 1: There hasn't been much of a rebuild. They're four and three,
- 7:11Speaker 1: they're in first place in the division. And John Schneider,
- 7:13Speaker 1: who was quiet throughout this entire thing, did not pile
- 7:16Speaker 1: any dirt on Russell Wilson. This guy released Bobby Wagner
- 7:20Speaker 1: and people went nuts and kind of was like, yeah,
- 7:21Speaker 1: Bobby's been a great pro, but it's been time to
- 7:23Speaker 1: move on. They replenished this roster so quickly with young talent,
- 7:27Speaker 1: and they're all performing. And they're four and three. We
- 7:30Speaker 1: are in Week eight in the Seattle Seahawks, but Geno
- 7:32Speaker 1: Smith and a bunch of rookies, five of them making
- 7:37Speaker 1: starting appearances on Sunday. Those rookies, they are in first
- 7:41Speaker 1: place in the NFC West and if the playoffs were
- 7:43Speaker 1: to start today, they would be hosting a playoff game.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Absolutely incredible. John Schneider, one of the great talent of
- 7:49Speaker 1: talent evaluators, but in this case, I think he des
- 7:52Speaker 1: there's a lot of credit, even though he's not one
- 7:53Speaker 1: who's going to run in front of a microphone all right,
- 7:56Speaker 1: from a good vibe to maybe not as good of
- 7:58Speaker 1: a vibe. Second down, What do you make of Kyler
- 8:02Speaker 1: and Cliff on the sideline yelling at each other right
- 8:07Speaker 1: there on National TV? Fascinated by it? I think Cliff
- 8:10Speaker 1: took the high road in a lot of ways. But
- 8:12Speaker 1: there was a little line there in the press conference
- 8:14Speaker 1: afterwards where he said like it's very gen Z and
- 8:17Speaker 1: I'm like, daw we go, here we go. There's something there,
- 8:22Speaker 1: gen Z. I mean Kyler, from what I gather, obviously,
- 8:27Speaker 1: was hearing Cliff in the headset and was yelling Adam,
- 8:29Speaker 1: you know, f and calm down and calm down. And
- 8:32Speaker 1: it's one thing to do that in a practice. It's
- 8:33Speaker 1: another thing to do that in the locker room. It's
- 8:35Speaker 1: another thing on Thursday Night football with the entire nation
- 8:37Speaker 1: watching to be screaming at your head coach dropping fbombs.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Here is what I will say. NFL Films has been
- 8:45Speaker 1: filming hard Knocks in season with the Arizona Cardinals the
- 8:48Speaker 1: entire season. It premiers November eighth. I am fascinated to
- 8:53Speaker 1: see what they captured and what they show us. The
- 8:58Speaker 1: cutting room floor stuff could be even more interesting because
- 9:00Speaker 1: I think Cliff and Kyler, as much as Cliff drafted
- 9:02Speaker 1: Kyler and as much as Kyler you know, has known
- 9:05Speaker 1: Cliff since since Cliff recruited him out of high school,
- 9:09Speaker 1: I think that thing is not in a good place.
- 9:12Speaker 1: And I think Kyler, in a lot of ways, people
- 9:15Speaker 1: enjoyed seeing him show a little emotion, little fire. It's
- 9:17Speaker 1: okay to curse once in a while. It's okay to
- 9:19Speaker 1: tell your coach off. It's the heat of the moment.
- 9:21Speaker 1: As long as you guys patch it up and it's
- 9:22Speaker 1: like there's a mutual respect. I'd love to know what's
- 9:25Speaker 1: going on in that building from Monday to Saturday, and
- 9:29Speaker 1: not just on the Sundays. And I think Hard Knocks
- 9:31Speaker 1: the NFL producers, what are we doing if we're not
- 9:34Speaker 1: capturing at all and showing us the real uncut stuff.
- 9:37Speaker 1: This can't be a puff piece on the Arizona Cardinals.
- 9:39Speaker 1: It's very rare that we get hard knocks, and it's hey,
- 9:42Speaker 1: here are all the warts and here are all the wounds.
- 9:44Speaker 1: I would imagine that the team has some approval process
- 9:47Speaker 1: in the editorial, but like, gosh, when you get a
- 9:48Speaker 1: moment like that, penny for your thoughts. But like I
- 9:52Speaker 1: would love love to see everything that went into that
- 9:56Speaker 1: dust up, but also the fallout afterwards. Cliff and Kyler
- 10:00Speaker 1: probably not in a great place right now, and as
- 10:02Speaker 1: we talk about it right in the thick of the
- 10:04Speaker 1: NFC all right down, can you just explain to me
- 10:09Speaker 1: what the call was at the end of the Browns game. Yeah.
- 10:12Speaker 1: I can't explain it without going to my sources. So
- 10:15Speaker 1: obviously I work with a lot of people in the
- 10:17Speaker 1: league at the league office, I work with my Prayer
- 10:20Speaker 1: and Dean Blandino who work at Fox. I reached out
- 10:24Speaker 1: to a few folks and I will say this, I'm
- 10:26Speaker 1: not going to name the source on this, and it's
- 10:28Speaker 1: none of those guys who explained it. And he said,
- 10:31Speaker 1: here's the deal. There actually were two false starts by
- 10:35Speaker 1: the offense on that play. The center dropped his head
- 10:39Speaker 1: and moved the ball at the same time, and that
- 10:43Speaker 1: caused the defensive reaction where you saw Klais Campbell come
- 10:46Speaker 1: on in. But also the left tight end moved before
- 10:51Speaker 1: any of the other offensive players, and you can't do that.
- 10:53Speaker 1: And this is where it gets really in the weeds
- 10:56Speaker 1: with the rule book and at home, like none of
- 10:57Speaker 1: us know this. That left tight end is not protected
- 11:01Speaker 1: since he has more than two and a half positions
- 11:04Speaker 1: from the point where the defense and did the neutral
- 11:07Speaker 1: zone all right, So if Klais Campbell enters that thing
- 11:10Speaker 1: two and a half positions away, that guy, that left
- 11:13Speaker 1: tight end is still susceptible to being a penalty. So
- 11:17Speaker 1: the center lifted his head false start the left tight end,
- 11:21Speaker 1: he moved false start. Unfortunately, the refs in the field,
- 11:25Speaker 1: they announced that sixty eight, the left guard, was at fault.
- 11:28Speaker 1: He didn't move at all. So it's very hard to
- 11:31Speaker 1: a fact. At Brown's fans are like, the league is
- 11:33Speaker 1: screwing us, the league hates us. Spoke to someone who knows,
- 11:37Speaker 1: and this guy who's looked at it time and time again,
- 11:40Speaker 1: was telling me, here's the deal. Two different false starts,
- 11:43Speaker 1: one by the center, one by the left tight end.
- 11:46Speaker 1: They just identified the wrong guy on the broadcast, and
- 11:49Speaker 1: sixty eight did nothing wrong. He didn't move. He was
- 11:52Speaker 1: fine as for picking up a flag on the Jacoby
- 11:57Speaker 1: Brissette roughing the passer something I've never seen before, roughing
- 12:00Speaker 1: the passer that could have changed the game. And then
- 12:02Speaker 1: they said ad actually was no flag. Yeah, I don't
- 12:05Speaker 1: know about that. One guy's all right, fourth down. Who
- 12:08Speaker 1: do you want to give a shout out to you
- 12:09Speaker 1: this week? I want to give a shout out to
- 12:11Speaker 1: my lovely wife, Erica. All right, this is not just
- 12:13Speaker 1: me trying to get brownie points. Let me explain my wife,
- 12:16Speaker 1: Erica's weekend. So, as I just mentioned, I fly out
- 12:19Speaker 1: to Los Angeles every weekend to work on the Fox
- 12:22Speaker 1: show I love it. It's with Sean Payton, it's with
- 12:24Speaker 1: Charissa Thompson, who's an absolute rock star. And it's with
- 12:27Speaker 1: Michael Vick and Charles Woodson, two guys who I had
- 12:29Speaker 1: their posters up when I was a kid. It's like
- 12:31Speaker 1: I'm living my dream. Meanwhile, I've got my wife back
- 12:34Speaker 1: home and she's a single mother on the weekends with
- 12:37Speaker 1: my son, mel who's now a rambunctious six year old
- 12:40Speaker 1: who has the curiosity like you've never seen, in the
- 12:42Speaker 1: energy I've never seen. And it's his birthday this weekend,
- 12:45Speaker 1: and all he wanted to do was see Lamar Jackson
- 12:48Speaker 1: play in person his first NFL game. I work for
- 12:52Speaker 1: the NFL. There is no way that my kid is
- 12:54Speaker 1: requesting seeing Lamar Jackson playing a game that we're not
- 12:57Speaker 1: making that happen. My wife traveled from New York City
- 13:02Speaker 1: to Baltimore, took my son to a Raven's Brown's game,
- 13:07Speaker 1: sat in the crowd with my guy, and my son
- 13:11Speaker 1: had the greatest birthday gift you could ever imagine. Shout
- 13:14Speaker 1: out to the Ravens staff, who I gave them a
- 13:16Speaker 1: little heads up. I didn't want any big to do.
- 13:18Speaker 1: I don't want to, but they came buying him a
- 13:20Speaker 1: pin that said my first game. I cannot tell you
- 13:23Speaker 1: how happy and how proud I was to see my
- 13:28Speaker 1: offspring be in love with the game of football. I
- 13:30Speaker 1: would I do this for a living and live and
- 13:31Speaker 1: die with it every single day. The Ravens obviously win.
- 13:35Speaker 1: My little guy mel had a blast. But it doesn't
- 13:38Speaker 1: happen if I don't have a partner in crime who's like, yeah, cool,
- 13:41Speaker 1: let's go to a football game on a Sunday, though
- 13:43Speaker 1: the first thing I want to do, especially in Baltimore,
- 13:45Speaker 1: Let's go. They got back yesterday and I think I
- 13:48Speaker 1: thanked her, but this is I say, I think, because
- 13:50Speaker 1: who knows. I probably was, you know, bitching about something else,
- 13:52Speaker 1: but I would like to thank her on this podcast, Aaron,
- 13:55Speaker 1: was that romantic? Was that nice? That went beautiful? Yeah?
- 13:57Speaker 1: I love that, and especially last week you and Paul
- 14:00Speaker 1: talks about Paul's first football game. Your sent will remember
- 14:04Speaker 1: this forever. That's that's great. Yeah, Daddy wasn't there? Okay,
- 14:07Speaker 1: Now do you have a shout out for me? Yeah?
- 14:12Speaker 1: So I was texting with some of my friends about football,
- 14:15Speaker 1: and one of them is a diehard Giants fan, and he,
- 14:18Speaker 1: you know, is texting me like pre written apology notes
- 14:21Speaker 1: to Daniel Jones, like if you fill in the blanks,
- 14:24Speaker 1: I'm sorry, Daniel Jones. I made fun of you for this.
- 14:26Speaker 1: But I want to call out Daniel Jones because, like
- 14:29Speaker 1: he looks so much more comfortable in the pocket, and
- 14:32Speaker 1: right now, through seven weeks, he's got more rushing yards
- 14:36Speaker 1: and three times as many rushing touchdowns as Naji Harris.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Like he's a weapon. He's not someone that we necessarily
- 14:44Speaker 1: expected to grow this season, I think, and so I
- 14:47Speaker 1: think the Giants kind of did too, because they declined
- 14:49Speaker 1: his fifth year option. So I kind of wanted to
- 14:52Speaker 1: ask you, what are the Giants going to do next year?
- 14:57Speaker 1: Great question? Yeah, you could celebrate. Daniel Jones knew the
- 14:59Speaker 1: parade down Broadway and then all of a sudden, you know,
- 15:02Speaker 1: the eggs accept the hatch, and it's like, well, now
- 15:04Speaker 1: what do we do? Who? We didn't expect this. It's
- 15:05Speaker 1: been a great and he's been outstanding, playing within himself
- 15:09Speaker 1: and doing what he does best. I told the story
- 15:11Speaker 1: on Ryan Rusilo's podcast earlier this week. I'm gonna tell
- 15:13Speaker 1: it again here. A lot of times when coaches get
- 15:16Speaker 1: shown the door, coaches get fired or general managers get fired,
- 15:19Speaker 1: I'll shoot them a note and just say, hey, if
- 15:22Speaker 1: there's anything you ever could possibly need from me, And
- 15:24Speaker 1: usually it's nothing, but if it's a reference, if it's
- 15:27Speaker 1: a contact, like I'm here, whatever. So I shot Joe
- 15:31Speaker 1: Judge a note when he got fired by the Giants,
- 15:33Speaker 1: and it was a tumultuous week for him, and he
- 15:35Speaker 1: pretty quickly shot back and was like, let me give
- 15:37Speaker 1: you a call, and we spoke and Judge, who say
- 15:40Speaker 1: what you want about him? As at the end there
- 15:42Speaker 1: like this is a good dude. I have nothing but
- 15:43Speaker 1: good things to say about Joe Judge, and he could
- 15:46Speaker 1: have very easily buried Daniel Jones. Instead, he was like, hey,
- 15:48Speaker 1: one thing, you're on that show all offseason. You do
- 15:52Speaker 1: that Good Morning Football. Like Daniel Jones is tough as nails.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Make sure people know that Daniel Jones comes prepared to
- 15:59Speaker 1: work every day he takes a beating behind that offensive line.
- 16:03Speaker 1: And this guy never complains, always prepared, always the right demeanor,
- 16:09Speaker 1: never out of control, never calls anyone out, and doesn't
- 16:11Speaker 1: get too down either, like I'm not sure it's going
- 16:14Speaker 1: to work in New York. And this was, you know,
- 16:15Speaker 1: from Joe Judge. I think he wouldn't mind me saying this.
- 16:17Speaker 1: He's like, but that dude, that dude's the real deal.
- 16:19Speaker 1: And I remember being like, well, that's cool, because like
- 16:21Speaker 1: you could have easily buried your former quarterback and said
- 16:24Speaker 1: he wasn't good enough for us to win, but he didn't.
- 16:27Speaker 1: Fast forward to this year. If Daniel Jones gets injured,
- 16:30Speaker 1: Daniel Jones gets hit, Daniel Jones lowers his shoulder and
- 16:33Speaker 1: like he just gets up for another down. I have
- 16:35Speaker 1: so much respect for Daniel Jones. And now there's this question,
- 16:38Speaker 1: what do you do with him. Here's what the options are.
- 16:42Speaker 1: You can let Daniel Jones walk test free agency, twenty
- 16:46Speaker 1: five year old quarterback who just had a good season,
- 16:48Speaker 1: whatever it ends up being. He let him walk and
- 16:51Speaker 1: he could either start somewhere else or fight for a
- 16:53Speaker 1: starting job or be a backup. We'll see. You could
- 16:56Speaker 1: sign him to the mega extension, say twenty five to
- 17:00Speaker 1: forty million dollars a year. I don't think he's gonna
- 17:02Speaker 1: get forty million, but I think if Daniel Jones was
- 17:03Speaker 1: offered twenty five to thirty over the next few years,
- 17:06Speaker 1: I think his agency and him would would think long
- 17:08Speaker 1: and hard about it. Or you can franchise tag him.
- 17:12Speaker 1: And franchise tagging him sounds like the move because it's
- 17:14Speaker 1: a one year more commitment of like, all right, prove yourself.
- 17:17Speaker 1: But the problem with franchise tagging him is that quarterbacks
- 17:21Speaker 1: make so much money right now. It's the average of
- 17:23Speaker 1: the top five salaries at the position. So if Russell
- 17:27Speaker 1: Wilson and Kyler Murray and Aaron Rodgers are all making
- 17:30Speaker 1: forty million, and that means you might have to pay
- 17:33Speaker 1: Daniel Jones thirty eight to forty million dollars a year.
- 17:36Speaker 1: If you franchise tag him for that one year and
- 17:38Speaker 1: then he can still leave the next year if he
- 17:41Speaker 1: has an outstanding season, because well, unless you give him
- 17:45Speaker 1: that long term contract, he don't own the rights to him.
- 17:49Speaker 1: I think the Giants are gonna wait this thing out.
- 17:52Speaker 1: I think They're going to see how far they can
- 17:53Speaker 1: take this. And I think it's a really smart conversation
- 17:56Speaker 1: to have. If Daniel Jones can get them to the playoffs,
- 17:59Speaker 1: I think that's about what I would need to see
- 18:01Speaker 1: just get him to the playoffs. I think that's fair.
- 18:04Speaker 1: I think you start at that twenty five to thirty
- 18:06Speaker 1: million all the range. I know that might sound ghastly,
- 18:08Speaker 1: but if you look at some of the numbers and
- 18:09Speaker 1: other quarterbacks are making, it's below market for a starting
- 18:13Speaker 1: quarterback in the NFL. And then you see what he says,
- 18:15Speaker 1: and then if you go back and forth, well then
- 18:18Speaker 1: you have a real contract negotiation. And guess what, Daniel Jones,
- 18:21Speaker 1: I don't think anyone had us having this conversation back
- 18:24Speaker 1: in August. Yeah, I also was never expecting that from
- 18:28Speaker 1: Daniel Jones. But I am very excited for our next guest,
- 18:33Speaker 1: near and dear to my heart with the Buffalo Bills.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Why don't you te us up for who we've got
- 18:38Speaker 1: coming on. Yeah, I'm excited for this guest, all right.
- 18:40Speaker 1: So when I started this podcast, I'm like, I want
- 18:42Speaker 1: to do some different types of guests, and we've already
- 18:45Speaker 1: seen two different flavors in our first two weeks. We
- 18:47Speaker 1: had Robert Sala, head coach of an NFL team. We
- 18:50Speaker 1: got to know him on a personal level, and I
- 18:51Speaker 1: thought that was really cool. Then we got Paul Rudd
- 18:54Speaker 1: in here for ninety minutes, and Paul Rudd was awesome,
- 18:56Speaker 1: and that's a celebrity fan. The third bucket. I want
- 18:59Speaker 1: to hit this and I want to get a bunch
- 19:00Speaker 1: of these guys on. It's the up and coming coach.
- 19:02Speaker 1: It's the up and coming guy that you're going to
- 19:04Speaker 1: be hearing about for the next decade of your life,
- 19:06Speaker 1: says football fans. But you might not know yet. So
- 19:09Speaker 1: I was happy when this guy agreed to be a
- 19:12Speaker 1: guest this week, Ladies and gentlemen, I'm happy to introduce
- 19:16Speaker 1: my guy, Ken Dorsey, Buffalo Bill's offensive coordinator and former
- 19:19Speaker 1: Miami Hurricane legend. Let's take a listen. Our next guest
- 19:25Speaker 1: was a standout quarterback at the University of Miami. From
- 19:28Speaker 1: nineteen ninety nine to two thousand two. This man had
- 19:32Speaker 1: a record of thirty eight into the winningest quarterback in
- 19:36Speaker 1: Miami history, and he won the National Championship in two
- 19:39Speaker 1: thousand and one. He was in the NFL, he went
- 19:41Speaker 1: into coaching, and now he is the offensive coordinator of
- 19:45Speaker 1: one of the most amazing offenses in the league. Ladies
- 19:48Speaker 1: and gentlemen, let's introduce Ken Dorsey to the Peter Schrager Podcast. Yeah,
- 19:54Speaker 1: we doing. Thanks for having me, dude. I love that
- 19:56Speaker 1: you're joining us because so often during the season we
- 20:00Speaker 1: get all like into it and we're saying this guy
- 20:02Speaker 1: is the coach of the year, and this guy is
- 20:04Speaker 1: the next ecod it, and then it's like, who are
- 20:06Speaker 1: the next faces? Who are the next guys? Who are
- 20:09Speaker 1: the ones that we should be talking about? Who are
- 20:10Speaker 1: going to be the next decade of great NFL head
- 20:13Speaker 1: coaches in this league? And I I've been very candid
- 20:16Speaker 1: with you and very candid on Good Morning Football, and
- 20:18Speaker 1: I think you've got all the right stuff. Take us
- 20:20Speaker 1: briefly through the path from going from player to coach
- 20:26Speaker 1: and what that decision was like for you as you
- 20:29Speaker 1: entered the sport at a different level and a different hat. Really. Yeah, No,
- 20:34Speaker 1: it was obviously a long journey from college playing at
- 20:39Speaker 1: University of Miami and then go and playing three years
- 20:42Speaker 1: in San Francisco, three years in Cleveland. And I always
- 20:45Speaker 1: kind of took the mentality of I didn't know I
- 20:47Speaker 1: was going to get into coaching at that time, but
- 20:49Speaker 1: I took you in mentality of, hey, I could walk outside,
- 20:51Speaker 1: get hit by a car and never play football. What
- 20:54Speaker 1: am I going to do? You know? So honestly coached
- 20:57Speaker 1: high school football there until opportunity with in the scouting
- 21:01Speaker 1: department with the Carolina Panthers came up, and I started
- 21:03Speaker 1: off in the pro scouting department, which was eight for
- 21:06Speaker 1: me because then it's you know, you're really looking at
- 21:09Speaker 1: both sides of the ball. You're scouting offense, defense, special teams,
- 21:12Speaker 1: so you're really kind of looking at at all aspects
- 21:15Speaker 1: of a play offensive line, defensive line, you know. So
- 21:18Speaker 1: so learned a lot through that experience that that I
- 21:21Speaker 1: really think kind of helped me to the coaching side
- 21:24Speaker 1: of things, and was fortunate enough to get the quarterback
- 21:26Speaker 1: coach job there and we had a good run and
- 21:30Speaker 1: then uh and then came here to Buffalo and pick
- 21:32Speaker 1: it up from there and uh continue rolling with some
- 21:35Speaker 1: tweaks and some some different looks. Yeah, and you had
- 21:40Speaker 1: that career as the scout, as you said, and then
- 21:42Speaker 1: you go with Cam Newton. Um, here is this physical
- 21:45Speaker 1: specimen like we'd never seen in the NFL, that quarterback.
- 21:47Speaker 1: You're the quarterbacks coach for Cam Newton, one of the
- 21:49Speaker 1: biggest personalities in the league. You guys go fifteen and one,
- 21:53Speaker 1: that one magical super Bowl season. But when you get
- 21:56Speaker 1: a guy like Cam Newton and your quarterback and when
- 21:59Speaker 1: you were playing pocket guy and then you have this
- 22:02Speaker 1: guy that does things at our super human how did
- 22:05Speaker 1: you have to bend and mold your versions of what
- 22:07Speaker 1: you envisioned an NFL offense to camp strings. It's a
- 22:10Speaker 1: little bit of learning on the fly, you know. And
- 22:13Speaker 1: the great thing about at the end of the day,
- 22:15Speaker 1: you've got to be able to win and succeed from
- 22:17Speaker 1: the pocket and do things you know from the pocket
- 22:19Speaker 1: in order to have to sustain success over the course
- 22:22Speaker 1: of time. And so that carries over no matter who
- 22:24Speaker 1: the quarterback is, whether it's a more mobile guy or
- 22:27Speaker 1: a true pocket passer guy, You've got to be able
- 22:30Speaker 1: to develop your mechanics from the pocket and be effective
- 22:34Speaker 1: from there while not taking away that ability to create
- 22:37Speaker 1: and what those guys, you know, what makes them special
- 22:41Speaker 1: and what makes them who they are, not not limiting
- 22:44Speaker 1: that and not taking away. So it's definitely a balancing
- 22:47Speaker 1: act of okay, making sure that they can operate everything
- 22:52Speaker 1: they need to from within the pocket, but not handcuffing
- 22:54Speaker 1: them and forcing him into something that they're not. Josh
- 22:58Speaker 1: Allen is such a special individual, and he's such an
- 23:01Speaker 1: important piece to this league, and he's such a good player.
- 23:03Speaker 1: You're with him every day. Yeah? Is he as good as?
- 23:07Speaker 1: It's as good as? I think the NFL could not
- 23:09Speaker 1: draw two greater ambassadors for the sport than Mahomes and
- 23:12Speaker 1: Alan Alan. This guy seems like he's missed everything and
- 23:15Speaker 1: he's just a wonderfully gracious human being. Is am I
- 23:18Speaker 1: just glowing for no reason? Is there a bad side
- 23:21Speaker 1: to this guy? No? I mean he really is? He
- 23:24Speaker 1: just I think he's exactly what you'd want in a
- 23:27Speaker 1: franchise quarterback in terms of obviously the physical skill set
- 23:31Speaker 1: that everybody sees, but then you know how he is
- 23:34Speaker 1: with his teammates, what he does, you know, in his preparation,
- 23:38Speaker 1: the dedication he has to the organization and to the
- 23:42Speaker 1: just the area of Western New York and Buffalo in general.
- 23:46Speaker 1: I mean, I'm very fortunate because I think he's obviously
- 23:50Speaker 1: one of the one of the great players in our league,
- 23:52Speaker 1: and working with him day and day out as a blast,
- 23:56Speaker 1: you know, one because he is who he is, and
- 23:58Speaker 1: two he's just a great guy to be around. When
- 24:01Speaker 1: he leaves his feet like he did against Kansas City
- 24:03Speaker 1: or Minnesota, do you hold your breath and go what
- 24:05Speaker 1: do you do it? Or is it like buckle up,
- 24:08Speaker 1: let's go. Well, it's it's obviously you know, there's a
- 24:12Speaker 1: lot of moments where it's just Josh being Josh and
- 24:14Speaker 1: doing Josh type things. So you know, you you rolish
- 24:17Speaker 1: that and you appreciate that, you know, because there's you're
- 24:20Speaker 1: not always going to have the perfect play called. You
- 24:23Speaker 1: just won't. I mean, in the in the nature of
- 24:25Speaker 1: calling a game, it's just there's gonna be plays that
- 24:28Speaker 1: they might have a better call than you. And you
- 24:30Speaker 1: gotta trust your guys that they you know, they know
- 24:33Speaker 1: how to react, they know what to do. And Josh
- 24:35Speaker 1: does an amazing job of getting us out of some
- 24:37Speaker 1: some tough looks and creating and putting a lot of
- 24:40Speaker 1: stress on the defense. Take us back in time when
- 24:43Speaker 1: you knew, like, did this guy's special A practice, a story,
- 24:47Speaker 1: a game. I'll always think back to twenty eighteen, Week three,
- 24:50Speaker 1: you guys go into Minnesota and he hurtles Anthony barn
- 24:53Speaker 1: I'm like, not a lot of quarterbacks do that. Um, yeah,
- 24:56Speaker 1: but that was with his legs. That wasn't even scratching
- 24:58Speaker 1: the surface. When did you know that this dude is different?
- 25:02Speaker 1: I mean really really the second I got here, to
- 25:04Speaker 1: be honest with you, just watching him and how he
- 25:07Speaker 1: reacts by first meeting with him. You know, there's times
- 25:10Speaker 1: you go through and it's like you go through your
- 25:12Speaker 1: power Point. I'm a big PowerPoint guy, you know, I
- 25:14Speaker 1: like point, let's go organization, you know, making sure we're
- 25:18Speaker 1: we're organized, were on top and everybody knows kind of
- 25:21Speaker 1: you know, what's your thought processes. So you know, I'm
- 25:23Speaker 1: going through PowerPoint with them and just kind of our
- 25:27Speaker 1: our mentality, our thought process, and just how locked in
- 25:30Speaker 1: he was, you know, with the first day, and just
- 25:32Speaker 1: how intune he is to the coaching. You know, throughout
- 25:35Speaker 1: that first offseason, I had with them, I knew like, Okay,
- 25:38Speaker 1: this guy wants to learn and get better, Like this
- 25:40Speaker 1: guy really wants to to, you know, continue to grow
- 25:43Speaker 1: as a player, not only physically but mentally. As a coach,
- 25:48Speaker 1: you appreciate that. You want guys who are striving to
- 25:51Speaker 1: just maximize their what they have, you know, whether it's
- 25:56Speaker 1: a high ceiling or not a high ceiling, because not
- 25:58Speaker 1: everybody is as physically gifted as as the guy next
- 26:01Speaker 1: to them. But as a coach, if you've got a
- 26:04Speaker 1: bunch of guys who are trying to maximize their ceiling
- 26:07Speaker 1: and accepting the coaching, then that's all you could ask for.
- 26:10Speaker 1: And Josh embodies that, you know. So I knew it then.
- 26:14Speaker 1: And then, honestly, you know, after that my first year here,
- 26:18Speaker 1: we went to the playoffs against Houston and then we
- 26:20Speaker 1: had a really good first half and then obviously in
- 26:22Speaker 1: the second half we kind of lost it. But after
- 26:26Speaker 1: that game, I just knew, like he has the right makeup,
- 26:29Speaker 1: you know, because he stood up in front of in
- 26:31Speaker 1: front of everybody and said, look, you know, we gotta
- 26:33Speaker 1: be better. I gotta be better, you know, and he
- 26:37Speaker 1: owned the fact that, hey, we didn't lose, not necessarily
- 26:40Speaker 1: all on him, but you know, he knew that in
- 26:44Speaker 1: order for us to take the next step, he's got
- 26:45Speaker 1: to take the next step. And I think he owned
- 26:47Speaker 1: that moment. And I think that's where you realize guys
- 26:50Speaker 1: grow from those that they handle it the right way. No,
- 26:53Speaker 1: it's deep cut like Bill's talk. But like that game,
- 26:56Speaker 1: it seemed like there was like a short circuit for Josh,
- 26:58Speaker 1: like at halftime and then he threw that really ill
- 27:00Speaker 1: advised lateral and I think that was on National TV.
- 27:03Speaker 1: It was a Saturday afternoon, and like there was a
- 27:06Speaker 1: lot of Okay, he's good athletically, but maybe and then
- 27:09Speaker 1: the next two seasons he's just been you know, mistin free, disciplined.
- 27:14Speaker 1: And I was there at talk like over the art.
- 27:17Speaker 1: Do you think that's just naturally is like the maturation
- 27:19Speaker 1: of a quarterback. I really believe that when you look
- 27:22Speaker 1: at quarterbacks coming into the league, there are so many
- 27:25Speaker 1: good ones. There are so many guys with a tremendous
- 27:28Speaker 1: skill set and ability, you know, and you need the
- 27:32Speaker 1: right mental makeup at which Josh has. But then it
- 27:35Speaker 1: also becomes okay, you know, reps, reps and reps not
- 27:40Speaker 1: only in practice, but in games, and the more game
- 27:43Speaker 1: reps you get, the more it's easy just to be
- 27:45Speaker 1: like react and it's hey, all right, I've got this play.
- 27:50Speaker 1: I know versus coverage, it's not the best play, all right,
- 27:53Speaker 1: so where's my outlets? And it's just quick to an outlet,
- 27:56Speaker 1: you know, knowing that, hey, I'm not going to pass
- 27:59Speaker 1: something up, just hoping for something better. And I think
- 28:01Speaker 1: the more reps you get, the more you see things,
- 28:04Speaker 1: and the more it's harder to surprise a guy because
- 28:06Speaker 1: you've seen different variations of whether it's Tampa two or
- 28:11Speaker 1: postie zones or Man's with different type of rat players
- 28:14Speaker 1: or robbers in the middle. You know you've seen these
- 28:17Speaker 1: different things, so less surprise to you, and you're quicker
- 28:20Speaker 1: to react to things. And the quicker you are to react,
- 28:23Speaker 1: the quicker the ball comes out, the more stress you
- 28:25Speaker 1: put on a defense. And I think that's you see
- 28:28Speaker 1: that in the maturation of guys. All those older quarterbacks
- 28:30Speaker 1: who have been able to stay in the league for
- 28:32Speaker 1: so long, they get back, they hit that fifth step
- 28:34Speaker 1: and they're dropping Bam, the ball's coming out and they're
- 28:37Speaker 1: a checkdown or they're ripping a seam or something like that.
- 28:39Speaker 1: But it's because they know, you know, they know on
- 28:42Speaker 1: this play versus this coverage, I've got a shot at
- 28:45Speaker 1: this or I don't have a shot at this, so
- 28:46Speaker 1: they can eliminate that and move on. Well, it's like,
- 28:50Speaker 1: you know, people laugh about how much money Chase Daniels
- 28:52Speaker 1: made in this league or your guy case Keenum, and
- 28:54Speaker 1: these guys will always had a Josh McCown. There's a
- 28:57Speaker 1: reason they're great in the locker room. They're great in
- 28:59Speaker 1: the quarterbacks room. They're also reliable when you put them in.
- 29:02Speaker 1: They're not going to cost you a game. That was
- 29:04Speaker 1: Drew Stanton for years. You're stating, always had a spot
- 29:06Speaker 1: an NFL roster. Take us through your quarterback room, because
- 29:09Speaker 1: I know it's not just you're in that room now,
- 29:11Speaker 1: Joe Brady is in that room as well. Uh, what's
- 29:13Speaker 1: it like, what's the dynamic case, Josh, Joe, you and
- 29:16Speaker 1: I think Barkley might be in there too. That's there. Yeah, Yeah,
- 29:19Speaker 1: this is a cool room. What do we got? It
- 29:21Speaker 1: really is? It's a and and that's a great thing
- 29:23Speaker 1: about it. You know, you've got Josh obviously with his experiences,
- 29:26Speaker 1: but you've got a got a group of guys with
- 29:28Speaker 1: tremendous experience, you know, and and been through a lot
- 29:31Speaker 1: of things. I mean obviously bark Was had been here
- 29:34Speaker 1: and then left and then came back, and we played
- 29:36Speaker 1: him like three or four times last year alone, like
- 29:39Speaker 1: you know, he kept bouncing around and ended up on
- 29:41Speaker 1: teams that we were playing. Um, you know. So it's
- 29:44Speaker 1: it's funny because like he has that perspective of teams
- 29:47Speaker 1: that played us and kind of how they saw that's cool.
- 29:51Speaker 1: You know, it's a it's a really cool perspective. And
- 29:53Speaker 1: then he got case who's you know, he's been through
- 29:56Speaker 1: good times and tough times and uh, you know, brought
- 29:59Speaker 1: a team to the playoffs and and you know, he
- 30:01Speaker 1: embodies you know, when you think back to the Minneapolis Miracles,
- 30:06Speaker 1: you know type game, he embodies the fact of, hey,
- 30:08Speaker 1: if you just keep keep chipping away, if you don't
- 30:11Speaker 1: get too high, you don't get too low, and you
- 30:12Speaker 1: stay right here, you never know what's going to happen
- 30:15Speaker 1: in the game because so many times it comes down
- 30:17Speaker 1: to the last two minutes of the fourth quarter. And
- 30:19Speaker 1: he just embodies that from that game, you know. So
- 30:21Speaker 1: it's like he has that he has that ability to
- 30:24Speaker 1: talk to Josh and be like, hey, yeah, we might
- 30:26Speaker 1: be down seven ten, uh, you know, whatever it is
- 30:29Speaker 1: or up, Like you've got to keep your foot on
- 30:31Speaker 1: the gas. You gotta stay you know, stay level, stay
- 30:34Speaker 1: focused on Hey, it's this drive. And because he's been there,
- 30:37Speaker 1: he's lived that, so that experience is awesome. And then
- 30:41Speaker 1: Joe Brady coming in coaching those guys. Did you know
- 30:45Speaker 1: Joe beforehand? Or because he was just wonder Kim in
- 30:47Speaker 1: the league, like you talked about LSU and then Sean
- 30:49Speaker 1: Hayton raped about him and guess the job at Carolina
- 30:51Speaker 1: at such a young age, did you know him? So
- 30:54Speaker 1: we you know, just through coaching ranks and getting to
- 30:57Speaker 1: know him combine and all that stuff. You know, it's uh,
- 31:00Speaker 1: And that's where those things are so beneficial because you
- 31:02Speaker 1: never know kind of how things unfold throughout the league.
- 31:05Speaker 1: Soviously it didn't work out for him in Carolina, and
- 31:09Speaker 1: it's lucky for us because he brings this great knowledge
- 31:13Speaker 1: of just the things they've done in New Orleans and
- 31:15Speaker 1: the things that he did obviously at LSU and then
- 31:19Speaker 1: took with him. So I mean it's great. And the
- 31:21Speaker 1: thing that's really beneficial for us is what we wanted
- 31:24Speaker 1: to do this offseason with the coaching staff is we
- 31:27Speaker 1: have our system and what we've run for for multiple years,
- 31:31Speaker 1: but it's really helped prevent us from being stale by
- 31:34Speaker 1: bringing some new stuff, yeah, from outside the system who
- 31:38Speaker 1: haven't necessarily been there, whether it's a Joe Brady or
- 31:41Speaker 1: an Aaron Cromer who hadn't been in the system before.
- 31:44Speaker 1: It really has kind of infused some newness, some new ideas,
- 31:49Speaker 1: which you know, helps those guys in the off season
- 31:51Speaker 1: two of like, Okay, it's not the same old stuff.
- 31:54Speaker 1: It's you know, it's something new, something that they could
- 31:57Speaker 1: say and tangible where you can look at and say, look,
- 32:00Speaker 1: this is why we're doing it and why it's going
- 32:02Speaker 1: to help us win. And then it's like, okay, that
- 32:04Speaker 1: makes sense and we could buy into this. Bro. That's
- 32:07Speaker 1: such a good take because Week one, you guys play
- 32:09Speaker 1: the Rams and it's like super Bowl Champions for us,
- 32:11Speaker 1: a team that everyone's hot on, and it was like
- 32:13Speaker 1: it felt like it was nine months of just the
- 32:16Speaker 1: frustration boiling over from that loss. Agains a Chiefs and
- 32:19Speaker 1: it was like builds a palooza. Here we are and
- 32:22Speaker 1: this is everything and you were so dialed in with
- 32:24Speaker 1: those play calls. It was not the same offense we
- 32:26Speaker 1: saw last year. It was almost like, let me show
- 32:27Speaker 1: you what I got. You know, here we go. Did
- 32:30Speaker 1: you feel that, like that opening week game, going into
- 32:33Speaker 1: that with Thursday night football and all the bright lights, like, Hey,
- 32:36Speaker 1: we're gonna stake our flag on this season and here's
- 32:38Speaker 1: what we're about. Yeah. And obviously anytime you open up
- 32:41Speaker 1: against such a great opponent, I mean, they're the Super
- 32:43Speaker 1: Bowl chance for a reason, and they are i mean
- 32:47Speaker 1: coaching staff wise, player wise, you know, it's it's it
- 32:50Speaker 1: really kind of forces you in the off season to
- 32:53Speaker 1: really have a different level of focus when you're opening
- 32:55Speaker 1: up with a game like that, you know, and and
- 32:59Speaker 1: it really created that, I think for everybody throughout the
- 33:01Speaker 1: off season. So, uh, it was. It was a great environment.
- 33:04Speaker 1: And yeah, I think that was It's part of it
- 33:06Speaker 1: because when whenever you take over an offense, it's like, yeah,
- 33:10Speaker 1: you're gonna take over. But you always want to infuse
- 33:12Speaker 1: your personality. You always want to fuse what the things
- 33:15Speaker 1: you believe in, the things you want to kind of incorporate,
- 33:18Speaker 1: whether it's stuff in the past, Lawyer, it was five
- 33:20Speaker 1: years ago. I was like, I kind of like this
- 33:22Speaker 1: but didn't quite get in, and we want I want
- 33:24Speaker 1: to take a look at it, and I believe in it.
- 33:27Speaker 1: But but I think that way, if you do that,
- 33:30Speaker 1: guys buy in a lot better because you're not trying
- 33:32Speaker 1: to be something you're not. You gotta be yourself, you
- 33:34Speaker 1: got to you gotta do what you believe in, and
- 33:36Speaker 1: that creates a lot more buy in. I think from
- 33:39Speaker 1: from your guys. You know, when when you're doing what
- 33:41Speaker 1: you believe in and they understand why, it's a lot
- 33:44Speaker 1: easier for those guys to be all in and one
- 33:46Speaker 1: hundred percent behind every single call you make because they
- 33:50Speaker 1: understand that it's it's a really cool time in the
- 33:53Speaker 1: league and that we're seeing a lot of that concepts
- 33:56Speaker 1: from college come in. But also you see some teams
- 33:59Speaker 1: still use a fullback, if you see some teams go
- 34:02Speaker 1: five wide, Like it's so varied, and I look at
- 34:05Speaker 1: all the young offensive head coach is in the league
- 34:06Speaker 1: right now, whether it be Mike McDaniel down in Miami
- 34:09Speaker 1: who's waited his time and now has his opportunity, 'll
- 34:11Speaker 1: floor up in Green Bay McVeigh obviously, Zach Taylor and Cincinnati.
- 34:16Speaker 1: We can go through it. You're a young offensive mind
- 34:19Speaker 1: who's getting a lot of eyeballs right now. If you're
- 34:21Speaker 1: talking to other coaches, and a lot of the listeners
- 34:23Speaker 1: to this are you know, coaches within the NFL, but
- 34:26Speaker 1: young coaches at the youth level. How do you just
- 34:29Speaker 1: hang tight, be patient and know that your time is
- 34:31Speaker 1: gonna come. What is your message? Because now you're the
- 34:33Speaker 1: OC of the number one offense in the league, and
- 34:35Speaker 1: it's like everyone's talking about Ken Dorsey as has this
- 34:38Speaker 1: great offensive mind. But it did not happen overnight. You
- 34:41Speaker 1: earned your earned your seat at the table over years
- 34:43Speaker 1: of grinding it out different jobs. What's your message to
- 34:46Speaker 1: someone who might be kind of hitting that wall right now.
- 34:48Speaker 1: It's a great question, and everybody has dreams and aspirations.
- 34:52Speaker 1: I go back to college a little bit in my
- 34:54Speaker 1: mind on this, and in college, obviously we had a
- 34:57Speaker 1: great run and everybody wanted to ask, like, Okay, you know,
- 35:00Speaker 1: do you think you're what round? Do you think you're
- 35:02Speaker 1: going to get drafted? Okay, what do you think you
- 35:05Speaker 1: should win? The Heisman Trophy and all this stuff? And
- 35:07Speaker 1: my mentality has always been if the team has success,
- 35:11Speaker 1: all that our stuff takes care of itself. The only
- 35:13Speaker 1: thing that matters is to me is the team's success.
- 35:16Speaker 1: Because if if I'm focused on those things and the
- 35:21Speaker 1: team wins and I maybe miss out on that opportunity,
- 35:24Speaker 1: but I'm still locked in on the team and we
- 35:27Speaker 1: win because of that, I can live with myself. What
- 35:30Speaker 1: I can't live with is if I'm worried about this
- 35:32Speaker 1: other stuff and I'm not one hundred percent focused on
- 35:35Speaker 1: the team and all of a sudden we lose a
- 35:37Speaker 1: game that maybe cost us a chance to be in
- 35:39Speaker 1: the National Championship, that I couldn't live with. I wouldn't
- 35:42Speaker 1: be able to live with myself, you know. So if
- 35:44Speaker 1: I if I miss out on something because I'm one
- 35:47Speaker 1: hundred percent focused and committed to our team success, then
- 35:52Speaker 1: then I can live with. I can live with that.
- 35:55Speaker 1: I love that answer. We not me. I know McVeagh
- 35:58Speaker 1: has that plastered all over in Los Angeles. That's their
- 36:01Speaker 1: whole facility is we not me. And after you get
- 36:04Speaker 1: a little success, and the Rams did have a lot
- 36:06Speaker 1: of success, that there starts to be a little bit
- 36:09Speaker 1: and then we go to Buffalo, We're starting to see
- 36:11Speaker 1: some guys get a little recognition. How do you keep
- 36:13Speaker 1: them humbled. Josh included, how do you keep them humbled?
- 36:16Speaker 1: The Hey, we haven't done squad yet, Well, I think
- 36:18Speaker 1: it's one. Uh what what Sean and Brandon have been
- 36:21Speaker 1: able to do? Bring in the right people. I mean
- 36:24Speaker 1: this is as as good of a as a team
- 36:27Speaker 1: I've been around in terms of one, you know, bring
- 36:31Speaker 1: in talented guys, but then also tremendous people, Guys who
- 36:36Speaker 1: are you know, committed to each other, uh, committed to
- 36:39Speaker 1: the one common goal, you know. And I think that's
- 36:42Speaker 1: just through through character and through through bring in people
- 36:46Speaker 1: that that fit the culture and which those guys and
- 36:49Speaker 1: us and as an organization are trying to build. I
- 36:51Speaker 1: think that's huge. And then at the same time, our
- 36:54Speaker 1: guys understanding, look, I mean we haven't won anything yet.
- 36:58Speaker 1: I mean it's such a it's such a week to
- 37:00Speaker 1: week league. We've got to be so focused on this
- 37:03Speaker 1: week and the right now, because if you don't take
- 37:07Speaker 1: that mindset, then you're not going to have the sustained
- 37:10Speaker 1: success that you want because you're constantly looking ahead or
- 37:12Speaker 1: you're constantly looking back. You've got to focus on right now,
- 37:15Speaker 1: and you've got to live in the moment right now.
- 37:17Speaker 1: Otherwise you have no chance to accomplish what you want
- 37:20Speaker 1: to accomplish in the future. Can we go through a
- 37:22Speaker 1: little story of time, because that Miami team was my
- 37:25Speaker 1: favorite college football team. I've got friends who are like,
- 37:28Speaker 1: I like Charlie Ward Nebraska, or I you know, Charlie
- 37:31Speaker 1: Ward Florida State, or I like Tommy Frasier Nebraska. I'm like,
- 37:34Speaker 1: give me book, David Larry Coker Canes football, no doubt.
- 37:38Speaker 1: Could you for the listener who might be a little
- 37:40Speaker 1: younger or might not be as into the college game,
- 37:42Speaker 1: can you just go through some of the players on
- 37:44Speaker 1: the team from that from that squad, it was fun.
- 37:47Speaker 1: I mean my first couple of years being able to
- 37:49Speaker 1: throw with guys to the Reggie Waynes and the Santana Mosses,
- 37:53Speaker 1: the Jeremy Shocky's, you know, and those guys and shoot.
- 37:57Speaker 1: In the National Championship game, Willis mcgahey was playing fullback
- 38:00Speaker 1: for US. Who are the other running backs? Who else
- 38:02Speaker 1: did you have had Willis mcgahey, Clinton, Porus? Uh, Frank
- 38:07Speaker 1: Gore Um? You know? So yeah, those guys were in
- 38:11Speaker 1: our back our backfield and wide receivers were who Reggie
- 38:15Speaker 1: Wayne and Johnson? Uh? Santana Moss and then Andre Andre
- 38:19Speaker 1: was the backup who kind of killed those guys need
- 38:23Speaker 1: a break. We had a guy named Andrea King who
- 38:25Speaker 1: was our slot receiver, played in the league and winslow well.
- 38:30Speaker 1: So Kellen came in as a as a wide receiver,
- 38:33Speaker 1: played wide receiver early on, and then once Shocky left,
- 38:36Speaker 1: moved to tight end. So I had Kellen my senior year,
- 38:39Speaker 1: and then on on. On defense, it was a whole
- 38:41Speaker 1: other You had the Ed Reids and the Sean Taylors
- 38:44Speaker 1: and Vince Woolf forks Um, Mike Rump and Philip Buchanan
- 38:48Speaker 1: who were first round corners, Johnathon Jonathan Villam and Dan
- 38:51Speaker 1: morgan Um. I mean, it's it's when you look back
- 38:55Speaker 1: at like those games and you see kind of like
- 38:58Speaker 1: a team picture. It really is ridiculous and uh just
- 39:03Speaker 1: unbelievably special kind of what that group was able to together.
- 39:06Speaker 1: And and honestly, the thing I really learned from it
- 39:09Speaker 1: too was those guys like like Ed Reid didn't come
- 39:13Speaker 1: in as like at five star Yeah yeah, you know,
- 39:16Speaker 1: I mean, like he came in as as a freshman
- 39:19Speaker 1: like every other freshman. What made Ed Reid ed Reid
- 39:22Speaker 1: was one the amount of work it took, and then
- 39:24Speaker 1: to the culture in which was built of just the
- 39:27Speaker 1: competition and every day it was a knockdown, drag out
- 39:31Speaker 1: in practice like every day like it was a mission
- 39:34Speaker 1: in my life to beat at Reid, you know, and
- 39:38Speaker 1: get them on something and score touchdowns against that defense
- 39:43Speaker 1: like it was. It was just a competitive atmosphere that
- 39:46Speaker 1: really drove a mentality of constantly getting better every single day.
- 39:52Speaker 1: Your best Jeremy Shockey story in sixty seconds, what do
- 39:54Speaker 1: you got? Oh man? Uh well, obviously, like the one
- 39:59Speaker 1: thing that that always sticks out to me is just, uh,
- 40:03Speaker 1: Larry Coker comes up to me and he goes, hey,
- 40:05Speaker 1: you know, we got this guy coming in from from
- 40:07Speaker 1: at Oklahoma, small town, you know, and I don't know,
- 40:11Speaker 1: you know, I don't know how well he's gonna fit it, adjustice,
- 40:14Speaker 1: So yeah, how's he going to adjust everything? It was
- 40:17Speaker 1: jaredy shocky and he let's say, he fitted just fine
- 40:20Speaker 1: in the Miami area and on that team, so you
- 40:23Speaker 1: didn't have any issues. Sean Taylor memories anything that sticks out.
- 40:29Speaker 1: He was so amazing just in terms of early on,
- 40:32Speaker 1: you knew this kid was getting that he seeking miss
- 40:35Speaker 1: play the whole time, you know, and just I mean
- 40:39Speaker 1: he was unbelieved. Just when you when you're back there,
- 40:41Speaker 1: it's like just the size and range in which he
- 40:44Speaker 1: had was incredible, you know, and instincts and everything, so
- 40:48Speaker 1: you always remember those things and just the the physical tools.
- 40:52Speaker 1: And then also, like I said, just the type of
- 40:55Speaker 1: guy he was, like, he's just a you know, a
- 40:57Speaker 1: guy that you just want to spend time with and
- 40:59Speaker 1: hang out with. He was. He was a good dude.
- 41:01Speaker 1: You know. Um, let's go forward to the Miami game.
- 41:05Speaker 1: Obviously we see this video of you getting frustrated. I
- 41:08Speaker 1: kind of liked it. I think Josh Allen liked it.
- 41:10Speaker 1: I don't want that to be like the persona of
- 41:13Speaker 1: Ken Dorsey of like this guy up in the box.
- 41:16Speaker 1: What's been the fall out of that the last comas
- 41:18Speaker 1: and have you leaned into it or are you like,
- 41:20Speaker 1: let's move on from that. Because we had Robert Sala
- 41:22Speaker 1: in week one and he made it or the first
- 41:24Speaker 1: episode and he had a comment about, you know, I'm
- 41:26Speaker 1: taking taking receipts for everyone whose question does and I
- 41:28Speaker 1: asked Hi about it, and he's like, you know, honestly,
- 41:31Speaker 1: I didn't love that. I said, that, and I hope
- 41:33Speaker 1: it goes away the clip with you, like, I kind
- 41:36Speaker 1: of liked the intensity, but I don't know if that's
- 41:38Speaker 1: how you wanted to be represented on you know, future
- 41:41Speaker 1: interviews being asked about that, No, no doubt. And I
- 41:44Speaker 1: think you know, you learn from your experiences, and we're human,
- 41:47Speaker 1: you know, and we all we all have reactions as
- 41:51Speaker 1: human beings. You know, you get frustrated or or whatever
- 41:54Speaker 1: it is that you're like, I wish I had handled
- 41:56Speaker 1: that differently, you know, and that's one of them. And
- 41:58Speaker 1: when you were you're in the course of a game
- 42:00Speaker 1: like that and you're playing, you know, your your guys
- 42:02Speaker 1: were giving you you know, they're hard and soul out
- 42:04Speaker 1: on the field, you know, and every single ounce of
- 42:07Speaker 1: everything they have, um, you know, and you're playing ninety
- 42:11Speaker 1: plays in that heat and you're losing guys and other
- 42:13Speaker 1: guys are having to step in and uh and and
- 42:16Speaker 1: perform at a high level in which they did. You know,
- 42:19Speaker 1: you're you're kind of your your commit your guys and
- 42:21Speaker 1: and you're you know, you love those guys and you
- 42:23Speaker 1: appreciate everything they're doing for you. So you know, at
- 42:26Speaker 1: the time, it's like when when the game ends, and
- 42:28Speaker 1: you lose in a in a tough way. You're you're frustrated,
- 42:31Speaker 1: you're you're upset, and you know, but you learn and
- 42:34Speaker 1: you learn from it and you're like, Okay, I need
- 42:36Speaker 1: to make sure I handle this in a different way.
- 42:38Speaker 1: But at the same time, you're never going to take
- 42:40Speaker 1: the the burning desire to win out of the game
- 42:44Speaker 1: for you. I loved about it, and you didn't swear
- 42:46Speaker 1: on camera. I was like, I kind of liked it.
- 42:48Speaker 1: I'm like, all right, this Bill's team and that coach
- 42:51Speaker 1: up there, they're pissed they lost that way, and like,
- 42:53Speaker 1: that's that's something I think every fan can appreciate. No, Yeah,
- 42:56Speaker 1: and I think you know, it's it's like any any sport.
- 42:59Speaker 1: You see it every you know, in all sports, whether
- 43:01Speaker 1: it's a you know, uh an NBA coach can eject
- 43:05Speaker 1: it from game or uh, you know, a baseball manager
- 43:08Speaker 1: getting injected. Whatever. You're so you're so committed to your
- 43:13Speaker 1: guys and you love your guys, and you want, you know,
- 43:16Speaker 1: nothing but success for the organization and for your guys,
- 43:20Speaker 1: and you know, uh, as as you grow and learn
- 43:24Speaker 1: these things, you learn, Okay, well, there's way ways to
- 43:27Speaker 1: obviously handle that, but um, you know, I don't think
- 43:30Speaker 1: you ever want to take that that burning desire, you know,
- 43:34Speaker 1: out of any player you have or any coach that
- 43:37Speaker 1: you have. But at the same time, just handle it
- 43:39Speaker 1: it and maybe in a different way. Okay for listeners
- 43:42Speaker 1: who aren't Bills fans, getting to know you now on
- 43:44Speaker 1: this podcast, tell us about your family life, your professional aspirations,
- 43:49Speaker 1: and more or less give us the Ken Dorsey Elevator
- 43:53Speaker 1: stage of core you and what are your core values?
- 43:55Speaker 1: In about sixty seconds. Well, I think the biggest thing
- 43:58Speaker 1: for me is, uh, you know, I I love ball.
- 44:01Speaker 1: You know, I've got a I've got a family who
- 44:03Speaker 1: loves ball because they don't see me. So my wife, uh,
- 44:07Speaker 1: somebody who's uh has committed to football. She hates watching
- 44:10Speaker 1: watching ball with other people because they talk to her
- 44:13Speaker 1: about non football things. My wife too. And I'm not
- 44:16Speaker 1: even a coach. It's like, if it's not football, I
- 44:18Speaker 1: don't really have any other interests at this moment. Yeah, exactly.
- 44:21Speaker 1: So she does a great job with the kids and
- 44:24Speaker 1: and uh in the season because she's a single mom
- 44:26Speaker 1: during the year, um, and and has no complaints about
- 44:30Speaker 1: that helps me. So you know that's that's the biggest
- 44:33Speaker 1: thing for me and uh at home. And then you know,
- 44:36Speaker 1: from from aspect of what I believe in, my beliefs
- 44:40Speaker 1: are arecast simple in terms of coaching I believe in
- 44:42Speaker 1: and you know, playing with speed, physicality and discipline, and uh,
- 44:47Speaker 1: I think if you play with those three things as
- 44:49Speaker 1: an offense, you're gonna always give yourself a chance to win. Ken.
- 44:53Speaker 1: That was good. That was really good. My last thing,
- 44:55Speaker 1: Josh Allen cam Newton, You've coached some great NFL quarterbreds.
- 44:59Speaker 1: Do they have any idea what a badass you were
- 45:01Speaker 1: in college? Like? Do they know? Did did they ever
- 45:04Speaker 1: go back, like to cam Newton coming in as VP
- 45:06Speaker 1: and all the stuff. Does he look back and be like, Yo, coach,
- 45:10Speaker 1: pretty damn good yourself, Like, did they know? Did these
- 45:12Speaker 1: young guys know? I think I think they're getting less
- 45:15Speaker 1: and less aware, you know. But Josh, Josh likes to
- 45:19Speaker 1: give me a hard time about it and everything. He likes.
- 45:22Speaker 1: He likes to joke, He likes to go around tell
- 45:24Speaker 1: him any anybody who talks to an interview or whatever,
- 45:27Speaker 1: that I just basically walking around with a stamped on
- 45:30Speaker 1: my forehead that was thirty two as a start st
- 45:34Speaker 1: Oh yeah, like like uh like, I you know, skill around.
- 45:38Speaker 1: Just that's the first thing when I introduced myself endors
- 45:41Speaker 1: I was thirty eighty two as a starter in college.
- 45:44Speaker 1: I feel like twenty five years ago, I was a
- 45:47Speaker 1: al Bundy Polk High School. That's exactly right, exactly right.
- 45:50Speaker 1: But I think, uh, I think they they kind of
- 45:54Speaker 1: you know, it's it's stage of the Internet and uh
- 45:58Speaker 1: obviously social media and everything, so they can look up anything.
- 46:00Speaker 1: So I think anytime you know you're new, they automatically
- 46:04Speaker 1: just google to see what you're all about. Awesome, Well,
- 46:08Speaker 1: you're all about ball and you're all about winning football
- 46:11Speaker 1: right now, I just wanted to thank you so much
- 46:12Speaker 1: during the season coming on our podcast, and Ken, I
- 46:15Speaker 1: just wish you need the best of luck. You're a
- 46:17Speaker 1: great dude, and you're really well respected around the league.
- 46:20Speaker 1: And I hope that the listeners get a glimpse right
- 46:22Speaker 1: now from this podcast of what a great guy you are.
- 46:24Speaker 1: Thanks for joining man, No, I appreciate you, Hammy, thank
- 46:27Speaker 1: you so good. Ken Dorse, the offensive coordinator and the
- 46:30Speaker 1: Buffalo Bills and a thirty eight and two starter in college.
- 46:33Speaker 1: Don't ever forget it, all right, So from one place
- 46:40Speaker 1: where things are going great right now Buffalo and everyone's
- 46:43Speaker 1: feeling themselves and the offense is awesome, to another where
- 46:46Speaker 1: I don't know what to say. Tampa Bay. This might
- 46:49Speaker 1: be the least entertaining team in football right now. I
- 46:51Speaker 1: don't know what's going on with Tom Brady. They lose
- 46:53Speaker 1: to the Carolina Panthers, a team that had a lot
- 46:56Speaker 1: of spirit, but certainly if you look at the rosters,
- 46:58Speaker 1: did not have the same caliber of skill position players
- 47:01Speaker 1: and talent to go up there and just absolutely beat them.
- 47:04Speaker 1: Last week I watched Tampa Bay. I'm confused. And if
- 47:09Speaker 1: you love this podcast, you love our segment called make
- 47:11Speaker 1: Me Smarter, where I bring in my guy, Tony Holzman
- 47:15Speaker 1: s Coran. Now, Tony is star researcher at the NFL Network,
- 47:19Speaker 1: and he is so much more. But one of Tony's
- 47:21Speaker 1: greatest qualities is that he makes me smarter. He sends
- 47:23Speaker 1: email he's like, hey, did you know this? And during
- 47:25Speaker 1: the combine in the draft, he's got all the information. Tony,
- 47:28Speaker 1: what's good? Hey, what's up? Strikes you are far too kind,
- 47:31Speaker 1: but I appreciate you. Yeah, all right, Well let's take
- 47:35Speaker 1: the compliments and let's keep on rolling because we're about
- 47:37Speaker 1: to get negative. Make me smarter. I know I've seen
- 47:42Speaker 1: Brady have some bad games, but like I never is
- 47:46Speaker 1: this the worst we've seen Tom Brady. I mean, it's
- 47:48Speaker 1: definitely the worst start he's had as far as win
- 47:51Speaker 1: loss record since two thousand and two, which was his
- 47:53Speaker 1: only true non playoff season as a starter, excluding two
- 47:56Speaker 1: thousand and eight when he had the knee injury in
- 47:57Speaker 1: Week one. And Brady's averaging his fewest past touchdowns per
- 48:00Speaker 1: game since becoming a starter. So it hasn't been the
- 48:04Speaker 1: greatest start down to Tampa Bay, like you alluded to. Yeah,
- 48:07Speaker 1: so let's ask about that because I watched these games
- 48:09Speaker 1: and it's like, it's not like Brady's getting like it's
- 48:13Speaker 1: it's not the Joe Burrow the first two weeks where
- 48:15Speaker 1: Burrow's running like a chicken with his head cut off
- 48:16Speaker 1: because the offensive line can't protect them. It's not like
- 48:18Speaker 1: it's you see some of these other teams at the
- 48:21Speaker 1: offensive line, it's just an absolute sieve. Brady's looking like
- 48:24Speaker 1: he's got time in the pocket and then he's just misfiring.
- 48:27Speaker 1: So make me smarter, Like, what the hell's going on? Well,
- 48:31Speaker 1: The offensive line did go through a lot of changes
- 48:33Speaker 1: this year as we saw like the interior offensive line
- 48:35Speaker 1: get decimated with Ali Marpet retiring, Alex Kappa going to
- 48:38Speaker 1: the Bengals, and then Ryan Jensen suffering that serious and
- 48:41Speaker 1: the injury and training camp. But where Brady's been struggling
- 48:45Speaker 1: the most is under pressure. Last season, he has had
- 48:47Speaker 1: the fifth highest PAS rating under pressure in the NFL
- 48:49Speaker 1: according to our in house next Gent stats which I
- 48:51Speaker 1: always gotta plug love next Gen stats. This season, he
- 48:54Speaker 1: has the third lowest passer rating under pressure. He literally,
- 48:58Speaker 1: if he threw every one of his passing attempts under
- 49:01Speaker 1: pressure into the stands, he would have the same passer
- 49:03Speaker 1: rating that he has right now. So it hasn't been
- 49:05Speaker 1: going great under pressure for Brady. Wow, So what is it?
- 49:08Speaker 1: Give us the numbers? Like, if you throw only in completions,
- 49:12Speaker 1: you have a pass rating of thirty nine point six.
- 49:14Speaker 1: You can't get any lower than that if you don't
- 49:16Speaker 1: throw picks and you're just only throw in completions. Brady'sasser
- 49:18Speaker 1: rating under pressure this season is thirty nine points six.
- 49:22Speaker 1: All right, So part of me, part of me wants
- 49:24Speaker 1: to say, Okay, they play Thursday night Brady gets a win,
- 49:27Speaker 1: suddenly they're back in first place. And here we go,
- 49:30Speaker 1: we're on this run and we all look stupid and
- 49:31Speaker 1: there's egg on our face for even doubting him. Then
- 49:33Speaker 1: part of me is like, it's going through a personal
- 49:36Speaker 1: situation with his marriage. The gronk's not there, the offensive
- 49:40Speaker 1: line sucks. If you were to bet, do you think
- 49:42Speaker 1: Brady turns us around and it's the old Brady or
- 49:44Speaker 1: do you think Tony Based on the numbers and based
- 49:47Speaker 1: on what you see, Hey, there's a cliff and Tom
- 49:50Speaker 1: Brady's fallen off it. I mean, I want to preface
- 49:53Speaker 1: this by saying, we're talking about seven times Super Bowl champion,
- 49:56Speaker 1: greatest resume in NFL history, forty five year old dude
- 49:59Speaker 1: who's playing with dudes who could be his son. But
- 50:05Speaker 1: Brady is the least pressure quarterback in the NFL, even
- 50:07Speaker 1: though we're talking about bad pressure. But it's because he
- 50:09Speaker 1: has to get the ball out faster than any quarterback
- 50:11Speaker 1: in the NFL. His average time to throw is two
- 50:14Speaker 1: point four seconds, which is faster than what next gen
- 50:17Speaker 1: SATs defines his quick passes. But the quick passes have
- 50:20Speaker 1: still kind of been there. He has seven of his
- 50:21Speaker 1: eight passing touchdowns on those throws this season. But it's
- 50:24Speaker 1: those longer developing players that Brady hasn't been hitting on
- 50:27Speaker 1: this year. Over the last two seasons, when he had
- 50:29Speaker 1: forty touchdowns in each of those years, he led the
- 50:32Speaker 1: NFL and pass touchdowns and in rhythm throws, which is
- 50:35Speaker 1: basically that sweet spot between quick passes and extended throws.
- 50:38Speaker 1: This season, he has no touchdowns on those passes. The
- 50:41Speaker 1: thing that worries me is the Buccaneers rush offense. They've
- 50:44Speaker 1: never been a team to run a ball a lot.
- 50:45Speaker 1: The problem is this year they're averaging sixty four yards
- 50:48Speaker 1: a game. That's not only the fewest in the NFL
- 50:51Speaker 1: this season, if that continued, it would be the fewest
- 50:53Speaker 1: by any team in the Super Bowl era since nineteen
- 50:55Speaker 1: sixty six. That is a bad thing. They don't run
- 50:57Speaker 1: the ball and they're bad at it when they run
- 50:59Speaker 1: the ball. This has also contributed to their third down
- 51:02Speaker 1: percentage of being down by like ten points this year. Huge.
- 51:05Speaker 1: I mean, if you can't run the ball, you can
- 51:06Speaker 1: get ahead of the change like it's harder in the
- 51:07Speaker 1: NFL when you have third and long. Those those things
- 51:10Speaker 1: are definitely concerned to me. But I will say this,
- 51:11Speaker 1: I'm never going to root against Tom Brady. Done it before,
- 51:15Speaker 1: not rooting? Are you picking against him? Forget rooting. I
- 51:17Speaker 1: don't care about your your fan name. Yeah I missed,
- 51:20Speaker 1: I'm I missed at that. I'm not even a Patriots fan,
- 51:23Speaker 1: but I'm not I'm not ever betting against Tom Brady.
- 51:27Speaker 1: Got it turning it around because we've all bet against
- 51:30Speaker 1: him before and saw him in twenty nineteen like is
- 51:33Speaker 1: it over? Yep? Like is it over? And then he
- 51:35Speaker 1: won Super Bowl. There was an America's Game I guess
- 51:38Speaker 1: it was. It must have been the twenty nineteen team
- 51:41Speaker 1: when they beat the Rams. And half of that America's
- 51:44Speaker 1: Game series is just me and Nate burrel issing, crapping
- 51:47Speaker 1: all over the Patriots and then like they would cut
- 51:49Speaker 1: to us on Good Morning Football and then show them
- 51:51Speaker 1: like rallying and winning, and I was like, oh, thanks,
- 51:53Speaker 1: NFL Films, gonna put me in a good spot. I'm
- 51:56Speaker 1: not doubting Brady either, but seven weeks a pretty good
- 51:59Speaker 1: sample size. I'll check in after ten weeks if it
- 52:02Speaker 1: doesn't get gone. I don't think it's suddenly going to
- 52:04Speaker 1: magically happen for sure, Thanksgiving. Is it like at that
- 52:07Speaker 1: line of what team are you? Who are you? This year?
- 52:10Speaker 1: There's a big matchup with the Mark coming up, which
- 52:12Speaker 1: is two quarterbacks who should probably be better in the
- 52:14Speaker 1: win loss record than they are this season. Yeah, Tony,
- 52:17Speaker 1: you always win. Thank you for making me smarter. I
- 52:18Speaker 1: appreciate you for having me shrinks for I really do.
- 52:21Speaker 1: Every week on this podcast, I'm gonna bring on one
- 52:24Speaker 1: of my personal friends, either someone in the NFL world
- 52:27Speaker 1: or someone that is like a real friend, a guy
- 52:30Speaker 1: that I've known since high school or college, and they're
- 52:32Speaker 1: gonna give me a take. And this particular one is
- 52:35Speaker 1: one of my best friends, Noah. Noah and I went
- 52:38Speaker 1: to college together at Emory University. Noah's like the first
- 52:42Speaker 1: guy I met on campus. He was a Jersey Shore guy,
- 52:44Speaker 1: just like me. We were living in Atlanta, we had
- 52:46Speaker 1: no idea what was going on down there, and we
- 52:48Speaker 1: have been best friends ever since. Noah listened to the
- 52:51Speaker 1: Paul Rudd podcast and he heard something that he had
- 52:55Speaker 1: to respond to. Let's toss to Paul Rudd last week
- 52:58Speaker 1: talking about Aaron Judge's sixty first home run ball and
- 53:01Speaker 1: what happened to it. Sarah speaking of Sarah's Sarah Walsh, Yeah,
- 53:06Speaker 1: whose husband caught the ball? Yes, Matt Bushman, Matt Bushman
- 53:11Speaker 1: to just give the ball back? Do we have to
- 53:13Speaker 1: tell the story? Okay? So here's seven. Uh. Sarah Wall,
- 53:15Speaker 1: she was an announcer on NFL Network or reporter. She's great,
- 53:18Speaker 1: has filled in on Good Morning Football multiple times. I
- 53:20Speaker 1: know it's a story, it's a it's a it's a
- 53:22Speaker 1: it's a weird of a context. But let's explain it. Well.
- 53:24Speaker 1: When Aaron Judge hit me and tied the record, right,
- 53:27Speaker 1: Her husband is the bullpen coach of the Toronto Blue
- 53:31Speaker 1: Jays and had the ball in his hand, the number
- 53:33Speaker 1: sixty two, and he gave the ball back to Aaron
- 53:36Speaker 1: Judge then gave it to his mom and sixty one
- 53:39Speaker 1: and uh and um and there was a big you know,
- 53:44Speaker 1: absolutely what a cool move. And I would like to
- 53:48Speaker 1: shout out that guy for doing the right thing. Way
- 53:51Speaker 1: to go, Sarah, props to your husband. Good for you
- 53:56Speaker 1: and you two Yes, great moments in NFL Network history.
- 53:59Speaker 1: My boy Noah is listening to the podcast. He fired
- 54:02Speaker 1: off a text to the group chat ladies, gentlemen, my
- 54:05Speaker 1: man Noah no please respond and give us your take, Peter,
- 54:09Speaker 1: I'm cringing over here. I'm cringing over here. So uh,
- 54:13Speaker 1: let me start off by saying, no one knows plad
- 54:16Speaker 1: more than me. Okay, one more than me? All right?
- 54:19Speaker 1: His work as Josh and clueless, I mean an aspiring
- 54:23Speaker 1: lawyer that like gets the girls song to it. I
- 54:27Speaker 1: mean as a lawyer myself. He made being a lawyer
- 54:31Speaker 1: an attractive thing to be for every women woman that
- 54:35Speaker 1: came of age in the nineteen nineties, and I am
- 54:36Speaker 1: forever grateful for that. But however, however, however, in talking
- 54:44Speaker 1: about this home run ball, okay, he used two words
- 54:49Speaker 1: in that clip you played that really stuck in my crop. Okay,
- 54:52Speaker 1: And those two words were right thing. Okay. He said
- 54:55Speaker 1: that Bushman did the quote right thing. I would like
- 54:59Speaker 1: to shout out that guy for doing the right thing. Now,
- 55:03Speaker 1: maybe for aunt Man or you know, I'm a former
- 55:07Speaker 1: MLB star married to one of your NFL colleagues. They
- 55:11Speaker 1: can give away a two million dollar lotting ticket and
- 55:14Speaker 1: it's the right thing to do. But but for me,
- 55:17Speaker 1: and you know me, Peter, I'm a man of the people,
- 55:19Speaker 1: if anything, a man of the people, A man of
- 55:21Speaker 1: the people, Okay, speak for the common man, the common man.
- 55:24Speaker 1: And what I'm worried about is when it's not you know,
- 55:28Speaker 1: Phoebe's boyfriend that gets the ball here, but it's some
- 55:32Speaker 1: you know, random, some kid, some average joe who gets
- 55:36Speaker 1: the next valuable ball. Is this innocent person. Is this
- 55:40Speaker 1: Joe the plumber gonna be harassed and harangue because he
- 55:45Speaker 1: didn't do the quote right thing? Okay? So I'm looking
- 55:48Speaker 1: out for the people, and you know that am not me.
- 55:51Speaker 1: I do think that like here we are, we're all
- 55:53Speaker 1: Pollyanna here. You know, I don't care how much money
- 55:56Speaker 1: you know, Bushman and Walsh have as a collective, as
- 55:59Speaker 1: a couple. You gave away a million dollars right there.
- 56:01Speaker 1: You just gave away for what for his mommy to
- 56:03Speaker 1: have it exactly. It's it's a crazy thing to do.
- 56:06Speaker 1: I mean, Judge is obviously he's obviously doing okay for himself,
- 56:10Speaker 1: we can say. But let me ask you a question, Peter,
- 56:13Speaker 1: when you were a kid, you'd go to you'd go
- 56:14Speaker 1: to baseball games, I assume every now and then, and
- 56:17Speaker 1: would you maybe take your baseball glove, your mitt, bringing
- 56:20Speaker 1: a mint, you bring the mat, and why would you
- 56:22Speaker 1: bring the mint, Why would you want you want the
- 56:24Speaker 1: ball you just in case there's a ball you have.
- 56:27Speaker 1: You go to the game with a with a dream
- 56:29Speaker 1: that you're gonna catch that ball. Okay, you do that
- 56:33Speaker 1: because there's a social contract that we've all entered into
- 56:36Speaker 1: when we go to an with the MLB that when
- 56:38Speaker 1: you catch that ball, it is your ball. Imagine because
- 56:40Speaker 1: you go to the game, you catch that ball, and
- 56:42Speaker 1: all of a sudden, now Paul Rudd has told the
- 56:45Speaker 1: world that's the right thing. You gotta give it back.
- 56:47Speaker 1: I can't stand for that, Peter, you know that I'm
- 56:49Speaker 1: gonna I'm gonna go one step further. Last year, Mike
- 56:51Speaker 1: Evans catches a touchdown pass and throws it into the
- 56:55Speaker 1: stands and the guy in the stands gives it back
- 56:58Speaker 1: to the Buccaneers and the exchange gets like a signed
- 57:01Speaker 1: Tom Brady jersey, and everyone's like, well, that was a
- 57:03Speaker 1: good story. You know you and I were texting. Then
- 57:06Speaker 1: you are outrage that that guy. Yeah, I see it.
- 57:08Speaker 1: I see it all the time, Peter, and I don't
- 57:10Speaker 1: like it. And I don't like it. Listen, if that
- 57:13Speaker 1: is your listen, if you want to give it back,
- 57:15Speaker 1: that's your prerogative. I'm gonna question you. I might not
- 57:19Speaker 1: trust you with my finances if you're making these decisions,
- 57:22Speaker 1: that's up to you. But but yeah, like, if it's me, listen,
- 57:26Speaker 1: I'm taking the two million dollars, okay, and I'll go
- 57:28Speaker 1: into my grave having not done the right thing. I'll
- 57:32Speaker 1: live with it. You're right, you know, the Marvel universe
- 57:36Speaker 1: might make it a different decision for some people. But
- 57:38Speaker 1: I'm with you, man, I don't know that'd be a
- 57:40Speaker 1: real moral and ethical debate. Like what because Aaron Judge
- 57:43Speaker 1: gets it handed to his mother and everyone says, oh,
- 57:46Speaker 1: that's a nice one that we all forget about the
- 57:48Speaker 1: next day. Matt Bushman, he's sitting there all right, back
- 57:51Speaker 1: to job, and I just gave away a million dollars.
- 57:53Speaker 1: Do I get up pat in the back every single day? No? Does?
- 57:57Speaker 1: Does Matt Bushman not have car payments to make? I mean,
- 57:59Speaker 1: come on, give a guy a break, let him let
- 58:01Speaker 1: him collect this, collect it all right. So the take
- 58:05Speaker 1: here is that we are not for shaming those who
- 58:08Speaker 1: do not give back the record breaking ball to the
- 58:11Speaker 1: athlete or to the athlete's mother. Yeah, that's exactly right.
- 58:14Speaker 1: I don't want to get into an ethical argument about
- 58:17Speaker 1: the you know, John Stuart Mill and you two the
- 58:18Speaker 1: terriyanism with Paul Rodd here, but I would I would
- 58:22Speaker 1: ask him to go to a little self reflection on
- 58:24Speaker 1: what makes it the quote right thing? Okay, I love
- 58:27Speaker 1: you dude, you nailed it. Incredible, Noah, thank you, thank you,
- 58:31Speaker 1: thank you. This is a dream, a dream to be on.
- 58:34Speaker 1: This is my sixty first home run ball, so thank
- 58:36Speaker 1: you for making it. And I'm not gonna rob you
- 58:38Speaker 1: of it. Awesome and there you have it. That's what
- 58:41Speaker 1: this podcast is. It's takes on, takes on takes, it's
- 58:44Speaker 1: insight and today I can't thank our guests enough. Ken
- 58:48Speaker 1: Dorsey incredible. He's gonna be in the running for a
- 58:51Speaker 1: lot of head coaching jobs. You got to know him
- 58:53Speaker 1: first on this podcast. I thought he was wonderful. And
- 58:55Speaker 1: I'll go down to Coral Gables in the early two
- 58:57Speaker 1: thousands on Memory Lane anytime you want to talk ed Reid,
- 59:00Speaker 1: Sean Taylor, and Jeremy Shockey, Tony our guy from the
- 59:03Speaker 1: NFL research department, explaining that Brady is as bad as
- 59:07Speaker 1: it looks. And then of course my boy Noah coming in.
- 59:10Speaker 1: But you know, Aaron, I ask you three for three.
- 59:13Speaker 1: I feel like this podcast was a home run. That
- 59:14Speaker 1: was great. Yeah, it was not the take I was
- 59:16Speaker 1: expecting when you said you wanted to talk about Aaron Judge,
- 59:19Speaker 1: and it was great. I loved it. There we go, guys,
- 59:22Speaker 1: till next week. Thanks for listening. It's the Season with
