- 0:03Speaker 1: It's Mark Topkin from the Tampa Bay Times joining us
- 0:05Speaker 1: right now. We're going to talk about the race.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Mark. Great to see you.
- 0:08Speaker 1: How is everything going for the Rays in the refreshed trop.
- 0:14Speaker 3: It is great to be back. And a lot of
- 0:16Speaker 3: people would never think they would say that about the
- 0:18Speaker 3: Troup speaking of aj but it is great to be
- 0:21Speaker 3: back here at Tropic Canafield.
- 0:25Speaker 4: Why all the hate Topper? You know that I always
- 0:27Speaker 4: like going to the trop. I love close to home.
- 0:31Speaker 5: He hates it.
- 0:31Speaker 3: It is close to home. But I'll tell you what
- 0:34Speaker 3: Eric Neanders said this first, and I'm kind of stealing
- 0:37Speaker 3: it from him, But all the things that people were
- 0:39Speaker 3: talking about before the hurricane that were bad about the
- 0:41Speaker 3: trop now it's been reframed and everything that's good about
- 0:45Speaker 3: the Trop I mean from a baseball standpoint, from a
- 0:47Speaker 3: fan experience standpoint, and just from the emotional standpoint of
- 0:50Speaker 3: feeling like home. This is where the Rays have been
- 0:52Speaker 3: for twenty eight seasons. We know what happened with the hurricane.
- 0:55Speaker 3: Tremendous effort and the resiliency and strength of this community
- 0:59Speaker 3: to get this thing re Else City of Saint Pete
- 1:00Speaker 3: gets a shout out, But this is where the Rays
- 1:03Speaker 3: belong as of now. We know there's plans to another
- 1:05Speaker 3: stadium in a few years, but as of right now,
- 1:08Speaker 3: this is where the Rays belong. This is home and
- 1:09Speaker 3: it feels good to be here.
- 1:11Speaker 5: I know where a few days removed from the opening
- 1:14Speaker 5: day there, did that have a different feeling because that area,
- 1:19Speaker 5: whether you're from exactly Saint Pete or the surrounding area,
- 1:23Speaker 5: everybody was affected by the hurricane. So did it feel
- 1:26Speaker 5: like something that like it just felt different in the
- 1:29Speaker 5: sense the fans could really rally behind the reopening of
- 1:33Speaker 5: a stadium, then maybe isn't going to be there forever
- 1:35Speaker 5: or wasn't your favorite place to be before it tore down?
- 1:40Speaker 3: Absolutely cratzy And look this is I don't think I'm
- 1:43Speaker 3: wrong about This is the biggest building, this holds the
- 1:46Speaker 3: biggest crowd that got damaged by Hurricane Ray j didn't
- 1:48Speaker 3: have any issues. It's the next biggest venue that we
- 1:51Speaker 3: have in the Tampa Bay area and it was damaged.
- 1:54Speaker 3: It was a sign for many, many many months of
- 1:57Speaker 3: the damage. Oh here in my little video right, it
- 1:59Speaker 3: was a sign of the damage, and it was a
- 2:02Speaker 3: beacon of the damage and driving by with the roof
- 2:05Speaker 3: being tattered. Then when they fixed it and got all
- 2:07Speaker 3: the pieces pulled down, and then it was driving by
- 2:09Speaker 3: and seeing the place with no roof on it, just
- 2:11Speaker 3: the bones the framework. That was horrible. Then they started
- 2:14Speaker 3: working on it and it was kind of a sign
- 2:16Speaker 3: of hope. And then when they finished it, I think
- 2:18Speaker 3: it was late November, it was a sign of success
- 2:20Speaker 3: and realization that they really were going to play baseball
- 2:23Speaker 3: here once they fixed the inside. So yeah, I think
- 2:26Speaker 3: it was totally different. I think it was a sign.
- 2:28Speaker 3: I mean, there's still places that aren't open from the hurricane.
- 2:31Speaker 3: And there's a beach bar right near where I live
- 2:33Speaker 3: out on Saint Pete Beach, Treasure Island area. We had
- 2:35Speaker 3: our daughters like night before the wedding party or the
- 2:38Speaker 3: welcome party, two nights before, called Caddies. It just opened
- 2:41Speaker 3: today or yesterday. That's how long it took to rebuild.
- 2:44Speaker 3: They're our favorite pizza place on Saint Pete Beach where
- 2:47Speaker 3: rock Obaldelli picture hangs on the wall. Vito of Michael's
- 2:49Speaker 3: that they didn't reopen. They're done, they just couldn't reopen.
- 2:52Speaker 3: So there's a lot of things that were still affected
- 2:55Speaker 3: by this hurricane. And to see this place full and
- 2:58Speaker 3: vibrant and loud in a celebratory mood and people happy,
- 3:02Speaker 3: and yeah, it meant a lot. It really did.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Well.
- 3:05Speaker 4: Did you throw a party? Did everyone throw a party
- 3:07Speaker 4: when they got back into Trot because you're talking about
- 3:10Speaker 4: the celebratory mood, but everyone hated the Trout before, Like
- 3:13Speaker 4: not me? I want to say, not me, because before
- 3:15Speaker 4: you say that, not me? But did everyone throw a party?
- 3:18Speaker 4: Because they got out of Steinberger Field, which listen was
- 3:21Speaker 4: as good as it could be. But now they're back
- 3:23Speaker 4: in an actual big league ballpark again.
- 3:27Speaker 3: You're in a big league ballpark. Look, they have the
- 3:29Speaker 3: ability to draw, you know, without the upper deck open,
- 3:32Speaker 3: twenty five thousand fans at some point this summer, we're
- 3:34Speaker 3: told that'll be available. That can push you to thirty
- 3:36Speaker 3: five or forty if the occasion were to warrant it.
- 3:39Speaker 3: I think they're announcing something tonight. They're going back, they're
- 3:41Speaker 3: starting a concert series again. But yeah, this is a place,
- 3:44Speaker 3: and just that's the fan standpoint, or a media standpoint, whatever,
- 3:48Speaker 3: we don't count. But then go to the player standpoint,
- 3:51Speaker 3: and I can tell you, I don't know if there
- 3:53Speaker 3: were five times last year once we got like through
- 3:56Speaker 3: mid May that the race took a full pregame workout
- 3:58Speaker 3: on the field where there was an issue with rain,
- 4:01Speaker 3: with heat, with lightning, something to do with they couldn't
- 4:04Speaker 3: get it, you know. The days they took a full
- 4:06Speaker 3: batting practice, the pitchers through all their work outside. There
- 4:09Speaker 3: was very rare that they could do that. Now you
- 4:11Speaker 3: get back to an environment where you can do everything
- 4:13Speaker 3: on schedule. I mean they're starting early work, like four
- 4:16Speaker 3: hours before game time today with bunting and stuff like that.
- 4:18Speaker 3: So just the ability to have the work day uninterrupted,
- 4:21Speaker 3: the certainty of knowing you're going to play the games
- 4:23Speaker 3: from a scheduling standpoint. So yeah, there's a lot of
- 4:26Speaker 3: like tangible and intangible benefits to being back here. And
- 4:29Speaker 3: you know, is there still a roof or there's still catwalks,
- 4:32Speaker 3: or there's still gonna be weird things that happen. Absolutely,
- 4:34Speaker 3: and maybe instead of it being the bad things, that
- 4:37Speaker 3: becomes oh that looks like you're weird, old uncle, right,
- 4:39Speaker 3: Oh that's the old trop with the ball bouncing off
- 4:42Speaker 3: the roof thing again. Oh that's funny, ha ha.
- 4:45Speaker 5: Yeah, or you could be like, holy cat, we would
- 4:47Speaker 5: have been outside today at least we're inside. I can't
- 4:52Speaker 5: see the ball when it goes up in the roof,
- 4:53Speaker 5: but you know what, we're inside. But talking about the stadium,
- 4:58Speaker 5: what do you have any updates on the next steps
- 5:02Speaker 5: or like what we could see of the next steps
- 5:05Speaker 5: of the possible new stadium coming for the race.
- 5:08Speaker 3: Yeah, still a lot of conversations going on. We had
- 5:11Speaker 3: a story in today's Tampa Bay Times that looks like
- 5:13Speaker 3: the Hillsborough County Commission that's the Tampa side, the county
- 5:17Speaker 3: over there called Hillsboro. They're gonna vote May fifth or
- 5:21Speaker 3: May six, something like that, and then the Tampa City
- 5:23Speaker 3: Council wuld vote the next day. There stills has to
- 5:26Speaker 3: be a final term sheet submitted, analyzed, scrutinized. They're gonna
- 5:29Speaker 3: have a public workshop on it. One of the commissioners
- 5:32Speaker 3: says he wants to do a public hearing. We'll see
- 5:34Speaker 3: how that unfolds. But right now the plan is for
- 5:36Speaker 3: some votes in May because the team is asking for
- 5:39Speaker 3: about one billion dollars a little more of that to
- 5:42Speaker 3: pay for half of the stadium, which is right now
- 5:44Speaker 3: pegg to two point three, and then there's the additional development.
- 5:48Speaker 3: I think you guys have all been to the Battery
- 5:49Speaker 3: in Atlanta. That has been their model. They've said that
- 5:51Speaker 3: from day one. But it's gonna be the Atlanta. It's
- 5:53Speaker 3: gonna kind of be Atlanta's battery on steroids. It's gonna
- 5:57Speaker 3: be bigger, reasonably amount bigger. They're trying to build this
- 6:00Speaker 3: thing and that land. It's right next to Steinberner Field,
- 6:02Speaker 3: across from Raymond James Stadium. For people familiar with the area,
- 6:06Speaker 3: this done area doesn't have a lot there right now,
- 6:08Speaker 3: so it would be a very I think, potentially, you know,
- 6:12Speaker 3: well received addition to the Tampa area. The downtown has
- 6:15Speaker 3: been thriving a little bit with Water Street, but nothing
- 6:17Speaker 3: really over there, so be curious to see how the
- 6:19Speaker 3: sun folds. Obviously, the future of the team has tied
- 6:21Speaker 3: very much into this. The new owners have made this
- 6:24Speaker 3: their number one priority, So we'll see what happens. But
- 6:26Speaker 3: I think we should know something within the next month
- 6:29Speaker 3: or so. I don't know that a no voter or
- 6:31Speaker 3: a delay kills anything, but it certainly puts a major
- 6:35Speaker 3: crimp in their plans. It's a very aggressive schedule. They
- 6:37Speaker 3: want this stadium open in twenty nine and they still
- 6:39Speaker 3: are waiting for approval to you know, do the first
- 6:43Speaker 3: active construction, and they're building on an active college campus,
- 6:45Speaker 3: so they've got to move that too. Orlando, Orlando, I
- 6:50Speaker 3: hear you saying that. I hear you saying that, Orlando.
- 6:55Speaker 3: All right, we'll see. Well, we'll tell you why. We'll meet,
- 6:57Speaker 3: like at the Stuckies in Lakeland or the Hooters. We'll
- 6:58Speaker 3: meet at the Hooters in Lakeland halfway once this thing
- 7:00Speaker 3: gets settled.
- 7:02Speaker 4: Ooh, Mark, not happened.
- 7:06Speaker 3: Not happened. You're not going to Hooters or we're not
- 7:08Speaker 3: meeting halfway?
- 7:10Speaker 4: Both?
- 7:11Speaker 3: Okay, you have to.
- 7:13Speaker 4: Drive your media meet. You know, players don't go meet media.
- 7:18Speaker 3: I mean, actually they often do when they apparently when
- 7:21Speaker 3: they're done, go ahead.
- 7:23Speaker 4: Apparently only coaches meet the media in random places. Sorry
- 7:26Speaker 4: too soon?
- 7:27Speaker 3: Oh wow, Yeah, we are not going to sit in
- 7:29Speaker 3: the hot tub together. I can tell you that. I
- 7:31Speaker 3: know you're not. No that. I will say that when
- 7:35Speaker 3: some players stop playing and they get jobs in the
- 7:37Speaker 3: media or other jobs, and they are much more friendly
- 7:40Speaker 3: to said media people than when they were playing and
- 7:42Speaker 3: had to go hit or how to go to the trainer's.
- 7:44Speaker 6: Room or something.
- 7:45Speaker 5: AJ's not friendly and just in general, so that's just
- 7:49Speaker 5: that's just life life for you. But that's okay, Mark,
- 7:52Speaker 5: I can be friendly to you.
- 7:54Speaker 6: With over thirty five million downloads, what is the number
- 7:58Speaker 6: one rated ticketing out?
- 8:00Speaker 7: It's simple, man, see Geek. As we know, man, they
- 8:03Speaker 7: have a lot of things that helps you out along
- 8:05Speaker 7: the way. They have green dots meaning good and red
- 8:08Speaker 7: dots meaning bad. And it's on a scale of one
- 8:10Speaker 7: to ten showing you, Scott, how good the seats are.
- 8:13Speaker 7: And sometimes you want to sit in the nosebleeders. Sometimes
- 8:15Speaker 7: you want to sit in really good seats and Scott,
- 8:17Speaker 7: you know the code.
- 8:18Speaker 6: Right, yeah?
- 8:18Speaker 3: I do.
- 8:18Speaker 6: And also I know that you always like a good deal.

- 8:41Speaker 1: have that code automatically added to your account so that
- 8:43Speaker 1: you can use it later. There are regular season MLB
- 8:46Speaker 1: games going on right now. There are hot tickets across
- 8:49Speaker 1: the country, So make sure you go to Sea Geek.
- 8:52Speaker 1: They will take care of you.
- 8:55Speaker 5: What do you see on the field from the race?
- 8:57Speaker 5: What do you see? And I mean I don't even
- 8:58Speaker 5: want to like project out for the season more so,
- 9:02Speaker 5: just what are you seeing early goings? Because this is
- 9:05Speaker 5: a really really new looking lineup from all the subtractions
- 9:10Speaker 5: that they had in the offseason and moving forward. What
- 9:14Speaker 5: are you seeing so far in the first twelve games
- 9:17Speaker 5: that we've that you've seen so far?
- 9:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I think you could you could break
- 9:22Speaker 3: it down really simply and you could say the starting
- 9:24Speaker 3: pitching has been pretty good. You say the lineup's been
- 9:26Speaker 3: really good. I mean, I think that's a very intriguing offense.
- 9:30Speaker 3: Kevin Arow really hasn't gotten going yet. Yandi's been hot,
- 9:33Speaker 3: Ronda has been hot than cool now looks like he's
- 9:35Speaker 3: hot again. Chandler Simpson has been one of the best
- 9:37Speaker 3: players in baseball right now. You know, Nick Vortees has
- 9:40Speaker 3: been a pleasant surprise at catcher. So there's a lot
- 9:42Speaker 3: of things about this lineup. They kind of looked at
- 9:45Speaker 3: it as they got the big three right and Diaz,
- 9:47Speaker 3: Ronda and Cavanaro and the rest we're going to be
- 9:49Speaker 3: complimentary pieces. Well you're seeing some of those complimentary pieces
- 9:52Speaker 3: pay off, so that part's been good. Now the defense
- 9:55Speaker 3: has been really bad and the bullpen has been pretty bad.
- 9:59Speaker 3: So those are two things that have to get better
- 10:01Speaker 3: obviously soon. They I don't know if they still do,
- 10:04Speaker 3: but as of yesterday, they led the major's and errors.
- 10:06Speaker 3: They threw out their first runner trying to steal a
- 10:08Speaker 3: base last night. For the entire season, I think they've
- 10:11Speaker 3: got fifteen against them down one thrown out, and the
- 10:13Speaker 3: bullpen has led. I think they've led. Last night may
- 10:16Speaker 3: have been the first game they didn't lead in all year,
- 10:20Speaker 3: and then they've obviously lost six of those eleven games,
- 10:23Speaker 3: so you can put that obviously on the bullpen. That's
- 10:25Speaker 3: got to get better. Griffin Jackson had a really rough start,
- 10:27Speaker 3: some bad luck, which is kind of what his story
- 10:29Speaker 3: was last year. And I think you're seeing Brian Baker
- 10:31Speaker 3: kind of emerges the guy at the back end here
- 10:33Speaker 3: because Clevenger's on the il Useta just started to rehab
- 10:36Speaker 3: last night. He's still several weeks away, so they're gonna
- 10:39Speaker 3: be patching this thing together.
- 10:41Speaker 4: Isn't that what the Razor best at though, isn't the
- 10:44Speaker 4: patching things together and figuring out ways when people say, oh,
- 10:48Speaker 4: they can't do this, and then next thing you know,
- 10:50Speaker 4: you look up and they're fighting for a playoff spot
- 10:52Speaker 4: and you're in the race at the end. It seems
- 10:54Speaker 4: like this is the perfect storm for Neander and Kevin
- 10:57Speaker 4: Cash to say, oh, look what we did again.
- 11:00Speaker 3: I mean it could be. I mean, two leasing seasons,
- 11:02Speaker 3: two losing seasons in a row the last two years
- 11:04Speaker 3: kind of left them pretty frosted. I mean they were
- 11:06Speaker 3: very disappointed. Neanders said they did not go into the
- 11:10Speaker 3: offseason planning to redo the roster. There were forty nine
- 11:13Speaker 3: players under team control at the end of the year,
- 11:15Speaker 3: forty on the roster in nine on the sixty dail
- 11:19Speaker 3: and I think twenty six of those guys are gone.
- 11:21Speaker 3: So that was a whether by design initially, but it
- 11:24Speaker 3: became a very much plan to flip this roster around,
- 11:27Speaker 3: and for the veterans that they brought in an interesting
- 11:29Speaker 3: right Stephen Mattz, Nick Martinez, Cedric Mullins, Jake Fraley, then
- 11:34Speaker 3: Gavin Lux by trade. So the first four free agency
- 11:36Speaker 3: by trade, those are guys that could either step in
- 11:39Speaker 3: they're all I think in contract years except Mats who've
- 11:41Speaker 3: got a two year deal here. You could think they're
- 11:43Speaker 3: going to be motivated, they're gonna play really well. They
- 11:45Speaker 3: could really relish in this opportunity, or if things are
- 11:47Speaker 3: going bad, they could all get traded in July, I
- 11:49Speaker 3: would assume. So there's going to be an opportunity here
- 11:52Speaker 3: for a few months, and it's a combination of the
- 11:54Speaker 3: raizone players, see what kamin Erra can do. The pitching
- 11:57Speaker 3: that they brought back. Obviously rast was and they traded
- 12:00Speaker 3: Shane bos but Rasmussen's here. Shane mcclanahan's probably the biggest
- 12:03Speaker 3: swing guy of everybody, look good physically so far, just
- 12:06Speaker 3: hasn't put together a complete outing, and he certainly has
- 12:09Speaker 3: been unhappy with how he's done, but he's done better
- 12:11Speaker 3: than he thinks. And then they've got to figure out
- 12:13Speaker 3: a way to straighten the rest of us out. But yeah,
- 12:15Speaker 3: aj Yes, it could be one of those years where
- 12:17Speaker 3: the race pull something off, or it could be another year.
- 12:20Speaker 3: And Theander has said this publicly. They've been accumulating all
- 12:22Speaker 3: this young talent, all these trades over the last couple
- 12:24Speaker 3: of years. They've been getting in you know, some very
- 12:27Speaker 3: talented prospects and guys that they haven't rushed to the
- 12:30Speaker 3: big leagues, And I think part of that is to
- 12:32Speaker 3: time this up for what they hope is that new
- 12:34Speaker 3: stadium window, whether it's you know, the last year here,
- 12:36Speaker 3: twenty eight, the first year there, if they get this
- 12:38Speaker 3: thing built twenty nine and have this core ready to go.
- 12:41Speaker 3: Like Jacob Melton, who they got this offseason. No rushing
- 12:43Speaker 3: to get him to the big leagues, but he's a
- 12:45Speaker 3: guy that could be a really big impact player for
- 12:47Speaker 3: them going forward. All Right.
- 12:49Speaker 5: I saw Shane mcclanahan's debut in the playoffs against US.
- 12:53Speaker 5: When he's with the Yankees, you always knew there's something different.
- 12:57Speaker 5: Anytime a left he throws one hundred miles an hour
- 12:59Speaker 5: is a start, you know. Blah blah blah. His interview
- 13:02Speaker 5: the other day I thought was refreshing and something that
- 13:07Speaker 5: I had never seen. I'd never seen many interviews with him.
- 13:11Speaker 5: Had you guys seen this side of him in the
- 13:13Speaker 5: sense of he For people who didn't see the interview,
- 13:16Speaker 5: it was very much like, I don't want the I
- 13:18Speaker 5: don't want the feel good story. I want to pitch better.
- 13:21Speaker 5: I want to do Have you seen that side of
- 13:23Speaker 5: him or is it something that has matured over the years.
- 13:28Speaker 3: Now, I think I think you're onto something there. I
- 13:30Speaker 3: think the time away, don't forget he you know, he
- 13:33Speaker 3: got hurt in August of twenty twenty three, did the
- 13:36Speaker 3: Tommy John rehab, was declared healthy at the end of
- 13:39Speaker 3: the twenty four season through like a live VP. They're like,
- 13:41Speaker 3: you're good, dame. In spring training twenty five he was
- 13:44Speaker 3: ready to go, right. He went through the whole spring training.
- 13:47Speaker 3: In his last start of spring training was when this
- 13:49Speaker 3: nerve thing happened and they thought it was going to
- 13:51Speaker 3: be a couple of days. That was the initial story
- 13:53Speaker 3: was he needs a couple of days, he should maybe
- 13:55Speaker 3: still make the opening day start. We'll see, And they
- 13:57Speaker 3: ended up missing the entire year because this thing was
- 13:59Speaker 3: so hard to to assess and treat and figure out
- 14:01Speaker 3: what to do with it. So for all he's gone through,
- 14:04Speaker 3: I think he has come out of this as a
- 14:06Speaker 3: little bit of a more mature Shane McClanahan, a little
- 14:09Speaker 3: bit more of a team leading Shane McClanahan, a little
- 14:12Speaker 3: bit more of a I mean, I don't want to
- 14:14Speaker 3: say like touchy feely kind of thing, because he's still
- 14:17Speaker 3: kind of a you know whatever, you know what to
- 14:20Speaker 3: the wall kind of guy. But I do think that
- 14:22Speaker 3: there's a little bit more sense and awareness to Shane McClanahan.
- 14:26Speaker 3: And you know, he said something leading up to that
- 14:28Speaker 3: first start in Milwaukee where he said, you know, I
- 14:30Speaker 3: realized I'm not gonna do this forever. And you know,
- 14:33Speaker 3: missing two plus years in a career that does have
- 14:35Speaker 3: a limited span. I think kind of shook him up
- 14:38Speaker 3: a little bit in that regard. And I think you're
- 14:40Speaker 3: seeing a guy who is a little bit more focused
- 14:43Speaker 3: and driven, if that's possible, but also more aware, like
- 14:46Speaker 3: you say, of situations and his role on this team.
- 14:49Speaker 3: And and with this situation.
- 14:52Speaker 4: Hey, Mark, wave to Elvis behind you, over.
- 14:54Speaker 3: You, over your Oh he's this way, Elnes. They want
- 14:57Speaker 3: you to say, hi.
- 15:00Speaker 4: Okay, I missed him in spring training this year.
- 15:04Speaker 3: AJ said he missed you in spring training.
- 15:07Speaker 4: And it was really nice of him to take that
- 15:09Speaker 4: picture of you or the video of you last night
- 15:12Speaker 4: when you went to get the ball and your pants
- 15:13Speaker 4: fell off. So it was really awesome of Elvis to Okay.
- 15:16Speaker 3: I think we're done. I think we're done right here. Yeah,
- 15:19Speaker 3: we're done right here. I lost you. I can't hear you.
- 15:23Speaker 2: What see? This is the problem topper.
- 15:27Speaker 1: You think you're doing a nice thing, relaying a message
- 15:30Speaker 1: to someone, and then all of a sudden, it's like anchorman.
- 15:32Speaker 1: They're putting things in the teleprompter.
- 15:36Speaker 3: I know, and I also have the you know, I
- 15:37Speaker 3: think I'm having fun. I'm kind of making fun of AJ.
- 15:39Speaker 3: I'm always going to get the short end of this.
- 15:41Speaker 3: I'm always gonna end up losing. So I poked the bear, man.
- 15:44Speaker 3: I shouldn't have poked the bear, did you?
- 15:47Speaker 4: In all honesty, though, did you guys see that when
- 15:48Speaker 4: it happened? Because when they showed it on TV, it
- 15:52Speaker 4: was like the Cubs guys didn't know what to say
- 15:55Speaker 4: because I saw the car. I didn't see the Rays.
- 15:57Speaker 4: Maybe the Rays didn't show it on their broadcast, but
- 15:59Speaker 4: the cub showed it and they were like, uh, okay,
- 16:02Speaker 4: let's not even acknowledge that the guy pants fell off.
- 16:07Speaker 3: No, they showed it on the RAS broadcast, and my
- 16:09Speaker 3: wife sent me the clip right away because we did
- 16:11Speaker 3: not see it from here. Just kind of another good
- 16:13Speaker 3: reporter wife, right, good reporter wife. I was like, hey,
- 16:16Speaker 3: did you see this? So I knew about it before
- 16:18Speaker 3: it started making the rounds Viraly, But yeah, you really
- 16:21Speaker 3: don't have a view of that here because just the
- 16:22Speaker 3: way the netting is. And I talked to Ryan Valaid,
- 16:25Speaker 3: the right fielder, and asked him, and he either did
- 16:27Speaker 3: the ultimate big league thing or truly didn't see it.
- 16:29Speaker 3: But he said he didn't see it. So I don't
- 16:31Speaker 3: know if the race were were either. I think what
- 16:32Speaker 3: Dwayne's stats said and I'm paraphrasing here, and if I
- 16:35Speaker 3: got it wrong, Dwayne, I'm sorry, but something like you
- 16:38Speaker 3: never know what you're going to see at a ballpark
- 16:39Speaker 3: or when you come to the ballpark, and that was
- 16:41Speaker 3: definitely true last night if you were watching that clip,
- 16:44Speaker 3: because that was not a good thing to see.
- 16:46Speaker 4: Mark, did you see? Did you see? Were you there?
- 16:49Speaker 4: When I was with Texas and the guy ran down
- 16:51Speaker 4: the steps and had the snap pants and he pulled
- 16:54Speaker 4: his pants off, and then he did a front flip
- 16:56Speaker 4: onto the field and he only had his tidy whities
- 16:58Speaker 4: on and then he ran out to the bases and
- 17:00Speaker 4: they tackled him. I don't know, I don't know if
- 17:03Speaker 4: you remember.
- 17:03Speaker 3: That, but I was. I don't know that I remember
- 17:05Speaker 3: that this guy ran ran.
- 17:08Speaker 4: There's twenty thirteen. The guy ran. No, he was just
- 17:10Speaker 4: he was just just his thing. This is what he did.
- 17:12Speaker 4: He ran down the steps and the TRUP got to
- 17:15Speaker 4: the dugout and he had those snap like basketball pants
- 17:18Speaker 4: on right, ripped him off, threw his shirt off front,
- 17:21Speaker 4: flipped over our dugout, and ran. They tackled him around
- 17:24Speaker 4: second base and they had him in handcuffs. He was
- 17:27Speaker 4: like this walking off the field, laughing and smiling, and
- 17:30Speaker 4: all he had was as tidy white as covered in
- 17:32Speaker 4: clay on.
- 17:33Speaker 3: Wow, I do not remember that. I'm surprised because we've
- 17:35Speaker 3: been looking up a lot of weird stuff about the
- 17:37Speaker 3: TRUP for a lot of our pre uh you know,
- 17:39Speaker 3: build up to the coverage here. I thought you were
- 17:41Speaker 3: going to say the day that some hippie looking dude
- 17:43Speaker 3: wandered down by the dugout and everybody was kind of
- 17:46Speaker 3: looking him weird, and by security came over and realized
- 17:48Speaker 3: it was John Jaso and they were like, oh, yeah,
- 17:55Speaker 3: he was a hippie. He still lives. I think he
- 17:58Speaker 3: still lives on his boat out here off the Saint
- 18:00Speaker 3: of Beach Marina, so he does too. Funny.
- 18:03Speaker 4: He looked like you should be putting in Pirates of
- 18:05Speaker 4: the Caribbean at the end, by the.
- 18:06Speaker 3: Way he did, and that would have been a good
- 18:09Speaker 3: career for him. He definitely could have gone into some
- 18:11Speaker 3: method acting or some extra roles on TV and broadcastings
- 18:15Speaker 3: like that.
- 18:15Speaker 4: For sure.
- 18:18Speaker 3: I mean to turn this around.
- 18:19Speaker 2: Here, Yeah, yeah, this would be a great way to
- 18:21Speaker 2: close it out. Let's see what we got here.
- 18:24Speaker 3: Looks exactly the same, right, the score, the video boards
- 18:28Speaker 3: been like tripled in size. They changed the banners. All
- 18:32Speaker 3: the wildcard banners are now on one the new owners.
- 18:34Speaker 3: You see him right in the center of the new
- 18:36Speaker 3: owners didn't like having the separate banners for the wildcard
- 18:38Speaker 3: to celebrate your bigger championships, so those are different. And
- 18:42Speaker 3: then you see it more here, So yeah, it's been refreshed.
- 18:45Speaker 3: The turf looks great. The roofs got a few brown
- 18:48Speaker 3: spots on it. Those are gonna bleach. That's not gonna
- 18:50Speaker 3: stay brown. And then we're back here and we got
- 18:53Speaker 3: Elvis behind us. So what could be better?
- 18:55Speaker 4: Exactly exactly the angle Elvis used for you last night,
- 18:58Speaker 4: Mark when you all ball Exactly that was exactly the angle.
- 19:05Speaker 2: I will say.
- 19:06Speaker 1: The roof looks more and I mean this as a
- 19:08Speaker 1: compliment more like plastic versus paper mache.
- 19:11Speaker 2: From last time.
- 19:12Speaker 3: It looks like really it's one layer rather than two,
- 19:15Speaker 3: so it's actually brighter. So these afternoon sessions and the
- 19:18Speaker 3: day games, it's been brighter.
- 19:21Speaker 1: Okay, maybe better for hitters. We'll have to let Willia
- 19:23Speaker 1: Domas know. Maybe he'll come back.
- 19:25Speaker 3: Yeah, and Nelson Cruz might pop in on that one too.
- 19:28Speaker 1: That's right, Topper Gray. Catchup has always been really appreciated.
- 19:31Speaker 1: Good talking to you.
- 19:32Speaker 3: We'll talk soon, okay, all right, me and Elvis say
- 19:35Speaker 3: thank you.
- 19:36Speaker 1: Thank you, Elvis. Check out Copper in the Times. Riverfront
- 19:40Speaker 1: Territory Stars. See Trent Rosekrantz joining us right now. You
- 19:44Speaker 1: can listen to his show Danny Graves along with him.
- 19:47Speaker 1: They did one that actually was posted late last night
- 19:50Speaker 1: talking about the Reds taking down the Marlins, so check
- 19:53Speaker 1: that out.
- 19:53Speaker 2: Plus of course his work in the athletics. See Trent.
- 19:56Speaker 2: How you doing and how are the Reds doing?
- 19:58Speaker 1: I feel like not getting talked about enough on the
- 20:00Speaker 1: national scene, and that's why you're here.
- 20:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:04Speaker 8: I've liked this team from the beginning, and they're playing
- 20:08Speaker 8: a lot like I almost see it as like a
- 20:11Speaker 8: meld between that twenty twenty three team that was so
- 20:16Speaker 8: like daring and running all the time, and then last
- 20:19Speaker 8: year it seemed like they were a little more reserved
- 20:22Speaker 8: under Terry Francona and how he wanted to do things.
- 20:25Speaker 8: And this is almost the perfect medium you're seeing them have.
- 20:29Speaker 8: They're not scoring a ton of runs, but they're scoring
- 20:31Speaker 8: enough runs. They are scoring with hit and runs, with
- 20:35Speaker 8: stolen bases, double steals, like the whole It was all
- 20:41Speaker 8: done last night in the last two innings, in the
- 20:44Speaker 8: ninth and tenth you had situational hitting. You've seen that
- 20:48Speaker 8: from Elie de la Cruz. You've seen it from Nathaniel
- 20:51Speaker 8: Lowe up and down the order, Tyler Stevenson. It was
- 20:55Speaker 8: an exciting one yesterday, but it was like an encapsulation
- 20:58Speaker 8: of everything. They've some great pitching. The team hasn't released.
- 21:03Speaker 8: I don't think they've scored a run for Andrew Rabbitt
- 21:05Speaker 8: in sixteen point one innings or sixteen or third innings,
- 21:08Speaker 8: but that's also been against Garrett Crochet, Paul Skeins and
- 21:13Speaker 8: and then last night sandi Ala Alcantara, who looked better
- 21:16Speaker 8: than both those guys combined. Yesterday and so yeah, it's
- 21:20Speaker 8: been a weird one, but they've also won five in
- 21:24Speaker 8: a row. They're at the top of the division. They've
- 21:29Speaker 8: got great pitching. You know, their number eight guy coming
- 21:33Speaker 8: into spring, Brandon Williamson just threw a really nice game
- 21:38Speaker 8: again in Florida two days ago. They have depth in
- 21:42Speaker 8: the rotation. It's been caused to use it with Hunter
- 21:46Speaker 8: Green and Nickelodolo down, but you've that means you have
- 21:49Speaker 8: Chase Burns, Rert Louder and Brandon Williamson, which has been
- 21:53Speaker 8: pretty good so far.
- 21:55Speaker 4: Can they can they sustain this by the way they can?
- 22:00Speaker 4: But with this lack of offense, I mean this is
- 22:03Speaker 4: this is a real la. I mean, the pitching can
- 22:06Speaker 4: because the pitching has been good for a couple of
- 22:07Speaker 4: years now, right even with Al Green and Lodolo, I mean,
- 22:10Speaker 4: Abbott and some of these other guys have been really good.
- 22:12Speaker 4: And Terry Francota he always figures out a bullpen somehow,
- 22:16Speaker 4: some whether whoever it is he's got to stick in
- 22:18Speaker 4: certain roles. He figures it out. But can they sustain
- 22:21Speaker 4: this with this lack of all I mean, this is
- 22:24Speaker 4: this is I know it's only eleven games, but this
- 22:26Speaker 4: is a lack of offense.
- 22:28Speaker 8: It has been a lack of offense, but I don't
- 22:30Speaker 8: know that it's going to continue to be a lack
- 22:31Speaker 8: of offense. You're seeing Ellie de la Cruz being quietly good,
- 22:36Speaker 8: you know, like he doesn't do any things quietly on
- 22:38Speaker 8: the field, but he's been quietly getting on base two
- 22:42Speaker 8: times a game. You've seen some differences in his approach
- 22:46Speaker 8: where he is. He has two of his three homers
- 22:49Speaker 8: are from the right side so far this year. You're
- 22:51Speaker 8: seeing those improvements. I think Matt McClain is coming back.
- 22:54Speaker 8: He's not the guy he was in spring training, but
- 22:57Speaker 8: nobody in the history of the game is the guy
- 22:58Speaker 8: he was in spring training. I think that's going to
- 23:01Speaker 8: be coming around a johanneo Suarez, Sal Stewart. I think
- 23:07Speaker 8: this offense is underperforming at the moment, but will be
- 23:10Speaker 8: better than they are right now.
- 23:15Speaker 1: Hey, I noticed I got to ask you about Rhet Louder.
- 23:18Speaker 1: He was just on the screen there. Yeah, ridiculous start
- 23:22Speaker 1: to his big league career. So your colleague Eno Cyrus
- 23:25Speaker 1: was on with us yesterday and one of the notes
- 23:28Speaker 1: he brought up in terms of the ABS Challenge system
- 23:31Speaker 1: is that he thinks, you know, it could hurt guys
- 23:33Speaker 1: who nibble or who are not.
- 23:34Speaker 2: Just big stuff guys, big blow guys and all that.
- 23:38Speaker 2: My counter is, how do you explain what Rhet Lauder
- 23:41Speaker 2: is doing right now?
- 23:44Speaker 8: He's really good. I mean, like, I know that sounds
- 23:48Speaker 8: simplistic and maybe not a great explanation as much as
- 23:51Speaker 8: it is a point. But I always go back to
- 23:55Speaker 8: the first time I saw him. It was his first
- 23:59Speaker 8: Cactus League Spring for in a game. It was at
- 24:01Speaker 8: Milwaukee two years ago. He had not played in you know,
- 24:04Speaker 8: and in the minors and was there and it looked
- 24:09Speaker 8: like it looked like, I don't know Brady Singer this
- 24:12Speaker 8: this spring a guy with a lot of time. He
- 24:16Speaker 8: is a guy that just knows how to pitch, and
- 24:19Speaker 8: like it's funny because you will hear these things. Well,
- 24:23Speaker 8: he doesn't have the greatest stuff. Well, he has really
- 24:26Speaker 8: really good stuff. It's just that he's in a rotation
- 24:29Speaker 8: with the likes of Hunter Green and Chase Burns and
- 24:33Speaker 8: Nicolodolo who have like transcendent stuff. So it's it's he
- 24:40Speaker 8: is a stuff plus control command guy. I'm high on
- 24:45Speaker 8: Louder and I have been because he just takes everything
- 24:49Speaker 8: in stride. And I went out to the clubhouse the
- 24:52Speaker 8: other day and just asking everybody after his start, like,
- 24:55Speaker 8: could you believe that was that guy's eighth big league start?
- 24:58Speaker 8: And he said it was a great to get through
- 25:01Speaker 8: those six was it six and the third innings or
- 25:04Speaker 8: six innings of three hit baseball in one walk? Yeah,
- 25:09Speaker 8: that's a kind of grind that I think every pitching
- 25:11Speaker 8: coach and every level of baseball on Earth would take.
- 25:18Speaker 4: And Trent, by the way, I don't know if you
- 25:19Speaker 4: remember this, but Louder and Skiings matched up in the
- 25:21Speaker 4: College World Series and that was a big thing on
- 25:24Speaker 4: who was going to be the first pick right, which
- 25:26Speaker 4: seems crazy now that we look at the difference in
- 25:29Speaker 4: their pro careers so far. But let's not forget that
- 25:32Speaker 4: one time. Skans and Louder were who's going to be
- 25:34Speaker 4: the first pick overall? And they matched up in Omah.
- 25:37Speaker 8: Yeah, and he went. They went toe to toe each
- 25:40Speaker 8: other and one of the best games any of us
- 25:41Speaker 8: have seen, one of the best preaching performances. And I
- 25:45Speaker 8: think that's, you know what, I'd rather have skins, but
- 25:49Speaker 8: I'm not complaining about having Louder and the Reds certainly
- 25:52Speaker 8: weren't complaining when he fell to number seven instead of
- 25:55Speaker 8: number one overall.
- 25:57Speaker 4: Trent, what about We kind of talked about the offensive.
- 26:00Speaker 4: But salth Stewart's been really good for you guys. Excuse me?
- 26:04Speaker 4: Can he keep doing this? I mean Terry Francona hit
- 26:06Speaker 4: him fourth opening day, right, Terry Francona doesn't usually hit
- 26:09Speaker 4: rookies in their first year, full year, fourth on opening day.
- 26:13Speaker 4: So that's got to tell you somebody believes something in
- 26:16Speaker 4: salth Stewart.
- 26:17Speaker 8: He's the ret louder of position players. He just looks
- 26:21Speaker 8: like he belongs. He knows what he's doing. He has
- 26:23Speaker 8: a high baseball like Q. Check out what south Stewart's
- 26:26Speaker 8: done on the basis. That's really what allowed Terry Francona
- 26:32Speaker 8: to know, like, hey, I think this guy can do it.
- 26:35Speaker 8: He doesn't strike out as much as some other guys,
- 26:38Speaker 8: and I think in his career, in his minor leagues,
- 26:40Speaker 8: he had more walks and strikeouts. And so put him
- 26:44Speaker 8: between Ellie de la Cruz and Aohanno Swarz, both the
- 26:47Speaker 8: guys who will strike out quite a bit, that's just
- 26:50Speaker 8: part of their game. But you put south Stewart in
- 26:53Speaker 8: between and it's worked out really well now South Stewart probably.
- 27:00Speaker 8: Do I think he is a nine to sixty seven
- 27:02Speaker 8: OPS guy this season?
- 27:05Speaker 7: No?
- 27:06Speaker 8: Could he be in the future.
- 27:07Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 27:07Speaker 8: Could he win a batting title in the future as
- 27:10Speaker 8: much as we still care about that thing, Yes he can.
- 27:13Speaker 8: He is that type of hitter. It is a professional
- 27:16Speaker 8: at bat time after time, and you know, beyond his years,
- 27:21Speaker 8: the at bats that he takes.
- 27:24Speaker 1: And so I'll ask you this, and I feel bad
- 27:26Speaker 1: I'm asking this while Tom Fraser is not on, although
- 27:28Speaker 1: I think he's on the next couple of days with us.
- 27:30Speaker 1: Should they be throwing a little Sal Stuart extension offer
- 27:34Speaker 1: his way? Todd said he was promised that years ago.
- 27:37Speaker 1: It never came his way, and we already heard about Elliott.
- 27:39Speaker 1: Doesn't sound like they're going to be able to figure
- 27:41Speaker 1: something out on the short term, so move on. Is
- 27:43Speaker 1: Sal Stuart the guy that they should be trying to
- 27:45Speaker 1: throw some money towards.
- 27:47Speaker 8: Yeah, I would be looking at doing that. Maybe Matt
- 27:50Speaker 8: McClain as well. You know McLain has the injury history,
- 27:54Speaker 8: so he doesn't quite have it. But if I'm looking for,
- 27:58Speaker 8: I don't know, looking long term in buying low I'm
- 28:01Speaker 8: doing Matt McClain too, But I think South Stuart would
- 28:03Speaker 8: be a no doubt or that's a course up to
- 28:06Speaker 8: South Stewart and Dan Lozano his agent, but yeah, I
- 28:11Speaker 8: and of course Nick Krawl, but yeah, no, I think
- 28:14Speaker 8: it is a guy to sign up long term because
- 28:18Speaker 8: this dude can just flat hit and it's it's been impressive.
- 28:23Speaker 8: He's a better athlete than he looks. And that is
- 28:26Speaker 8: going on the base running, how he's picked up first base.
- 28:31Speaker 3: I think he is.
- 28:33Speaker 8: He is a guy that you can look at for
- 28:35Speaker 8: a long time and say, hey, we believe in this guy.
- 28:41Speaker 4: All right, speaking of believing in things, wish me luck.
- 28:47Speaker 4: I'm in Georgia. I'm in Georgia for two days. Wish
- 28:50Speaker 4: me luck.
- 28:53Speaker 8: You're in God's country. So good for you. You got
- 28:57Speaker 8: out of where you come from and and and got
- 29:01Speaker 8: to maybe go over to Athens.
- 29:03Speaker 4: See what it's right there. I'm right there. I'm in
- 29:06Speaker 4: a cony and then I'm going to I'm going to
- 29:07Speaker 4: Augusta tomorrow, so I'm right by Athens. But I don't
- 29:11Speaker 4: know if I wear a Gator shirt in Athens, if
- 29:12Speaker 4: they'll welcome me.
- 29:15Speaker 8: I mean they'll see it's a j. Perzinski, So they
- 29:17Speaker 8: wouldn't be welcome you anyway. Calient Tito's right next to
- 29:21Speaker 8: fully Field. Go to calient Tito's, get the State Cuban
- 29:25Speaker 8: and Tostone's.
- 29:27Speaker 4: Were you reading that? Was that like a paid plug
- 29:30Speaker 4: right there?
- 29:30Speaker 2: No?
- 29:31Speaker 4: No, no, let me look down that perfectly.
- 29:35Speaker 3: No.
- 29:37Speaker 8: If if if calient Titos wants to sponsor me, they
- 29:39Speaker 8: can sponsor me. But it is elite. That's I had
- 29:43Speaker 8: my wedding reception there, or my rehearsal dinner there.
- 29:48Speaker 1: Don't use code Riverfront, it will not work. Don't say
- 29:51Speaker 1: that to the waiter.
- 29:52Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, they no waiters, we're counter service man. I
- 29:56Speaker 8: ain't fancy, I'm no, I'm no Florida Gator is uh
- 30:01Speaker 8: you know AJ Pierzinski and his tuxedo with Gene Schwartz.
- 30:05Speaker 1: Fancy what about brave shirt or jersey even right and
- 30:10Speaker 1: Gator's hat?
- 30:11Speaker 2: How would he be received there?
- 30:14Speaker 8: You know, most people in Athens are cool. We're all right, hey,
- 30:19Speaker 8: we know that you have to go back to Florida,
- 30:21Speaker 8: and we're gonna take it easy on you. You know,
- 30:24Speaker 8: they get to live in Athens, which is you know,
- 30:26Speaker 8: the original Athens. Of course, people know Ohio here, aren't
- 30:29Speaker 8: used to that. It's the superior Athens. There's no other
- 30:31Speaker 8: Athens in the world other than that Athens. And we
- 30:36Speaker 8: just know that we're We just feel good that even
- 30:38Speaker 8: if they lose a game, we get to go back
- 30:40Speaker 8: to Athens.
- 30:41Speaker 4: You're right, thank you for taking Mike White. There you go,
