- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the wire to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:17Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyon. In this episode number two hundered
- 0:19Speaker 1: in sixty nine and today we're talking about a variety
- 0:22Speaker 1: of different topics, including some CWD current event news type stuff.
- 0:27Speaker 1: We're talking about shed hunting and talking Western white tales
- 0:31Speaker 1: with a couple of Westerners. All right, folks, gotta jump
- 0:48Speaker 1: in here with a quick pre show to the pregame
- 0:51Speaker 1: show story of sorts. Basically, the other night, Dan and
- 0:57Speaker 1: I record a very interesting in production forty two minutes
- 1:02Speaker 1: of great conversation on a slew of topics. We kind
- 1:05Speaker 1: of positioned this podcast is a two parter, so that
- 1:07Speaker 1: first one we talked about CWD in the news. We
- 1:10Speaker 1: talked about our latest shed hunting exploits and plans. We
- 1:13Speaker 1: talked a little bit about our dreams about doing things
- 1:15Speaker 1: out west. Very interesting chat. But about halfway through that chat,
- 1:20Speaker 1: all of us and I noticed that my application that
- 1:23Speaker 1: records my podcast was making a weird flash. And I
- 1:26Speaker 1: go and I see that instead of recording our entire conversation,
- 1:29Speaker 1: it recorded our entire conversation in one second increments, so
- 1:34Speaker 1: a small part of my soul died at that point.
- 1:36Speaker 1: I cried a little bit and I told Dan, like, Dan,
- 1:38Speaker 1: I don't think this has been recording on my end properly,
- 1:40Speaker 1: and he said, well, no worries, man, I've got a
- 1:42Speaker 1: record on my side. So I sighed a huge It
- 1:45Speaker 1: was huge relief. I get that file back from Dan
- 1:49Speaker 1: after we recorded everything, and I hear that there's some
- 1:52Speaker 1: still little tiny glitch from my recording issue on my end.
- 1:57Speaker 1: So I sat here this morning thinking, Okay, do we
- 2:00Speaker 1: ditch this whole thing and do I just record a
- 2:02Speaker 1: little boilerplate, you know, two minute intro or do we
- 2:08Speaker 1: run with the forty two minute interesting interview. Me and
- 2:11Speaker 1: Dan did together and just have a little bit of
- 2:14Speaker 1: that audio glitch, and ended up deciding to leave that
- 2:17Speaker 1: in there because I think we cover some important and
- 2:20Speaker 1: interesting stuff, especially when it comes to a lot of
- 2:22Speaker 1: stuff going on to c w D world right now.
- 2:24Speaker 1: I wanted to address some important issues there. I think
- 2:28Speaker 1: it's worth keeping in there. So if you don't like
- 2:30Speaker 1: the way things sound, and it sounds a little bit
- 2:31Speaker 1: different than usual, but if you don't like it, feel free.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Just a fast forward about forty some minutes and you
- 2:36Speaker 1: will get to part two. That sounds terrific, and that
- 2:40Speaker 1: is our Western White Tailed interview with Eric and Zach
- 2:42Speaker 1: and I think you'll love that. But if it sounds
- 2:45Speaker 1: okay to you, stick around for this one. Me and
- 2:47Speaker 1: Dan have a great longer than usual intro covering some
- 2:50Speaker 1: interesting topics. So thank you for your patients, thank you
- 2:53Speaker 1: for your understanding, and uh here's the show. All right,
- 2:58Speaker 1: welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, brought to you
- 3:02Speaker 1: by Onyx, and today we've got a fun episode for you.
- 3:06Speaker 1: It's kind of a kind of a two parter I
- 3:08Speaker 1: guess really a two parter um. In part one, I
- 3:13Speaker 1: got my buddy and co host, extraordinary Dan Jensen here
- 3:17Speaker 1: with me. Dan, how are you? I'm good here? Listen
- 3:19Speaker 1: to this once? Do you hear this? Uh? Yeah, yeah,
- 3:25Speaker 1: that's my nub rubbing against my microphone. Okay, just your
- 3:32Speaker 1: tenth finger that's not there rubbing that nub. Okay, do
- 3:39Speaker 1: we need to start the podcast over? Keep that? So
- 3:43Speaker 1: Dan's rubbing his fingerless finger on the microphone, which means
- 3:47Speaker 1: he's excited. That's good. Um so so you're hearing me
- 3:53Speaker 1: for a little bit, and I wanted to do a
- 3:55Speaker 1: sort of a longer intro maybe we usually do a
- 3:57Speaker 1: slightly longer pregame show to catch up a bit on
- 4:00Speaker 1: what's going on with us and some things going on
- 4:03Speaker 1: in the well tail world, especially because in the last
- 4:06Speaker 1: week week and a half there's been a whole lot
- 4:09Speaker 1: in the news about gear specifically c w D talked
- 4:13Speaker 1: about in the mainstream news and going viral on the internet,
- 4:16Speaker 1: and a whole bunch of stuff there. So I want
- 4:17Speaker 1: to clarify some things about what's going on there. Um.
- 4:20Speaker 1: I also want to talk shed hunting a little bit because, uh,
- 4:24Speaker 1: you know, it's that time of year. I want to
- 4:25Speaker 1: see if you've done anything since we bought last time,
- 4:27Speaker 1: and see what's gonna happen for the upcoming ship Railly
- 4:30Speaker 1: event um. And then the main gist of this episode,
- 4:33Speaker 1: and unfortunately, after you've got a bell, we're gonna bring
- 4:36Speaker 1: a couple of guys from Montana, uh to talk about
- 4:40Speaker 1: western hunting, specifically western white tail hunting. Um. So I
- 4:45Speaker 1: thought you and me might have a few thoughts to
- 4:46Speaker 1: share on that. As you know, I know both of
- 4:48Speaker 1: us are planning Western hunts of one or another. UM,
- 4:52Speaker 1: And then like part two of that is then gonna
- 4:54Speaker 1: be we're gonna get Eric Sep Freed and Zack Sandalf Onyx.
- 4:57Speaker 1: They live on Montana. They're gonna join in me to
- 5:00Speaker 1: kind of share a local westerner's perspective on hunting white tails. UM.
- 5:05Speaker 1: You know, you and me have talked a little bit
- 5:06Speaker 1: in the past on my experiences out there, but it's
- 5:08Speaker 1: always been you know, how I've taken a Midwest white
- 5:11Speaker 1: approach and applied it to Western white tails. Um. For
- 5:15Speaker 1: one of the first times. Now I'm going to stat
- 5:17Speaker 1: with someone who lives out there about how they approach
- 5:20Speaker 1: hunting white tails, which is kind of unique, pretty interesting,
- 5:23Speaker 1: I thought. Um, so that is kind of what we've
- 5:26Speaker 1: done store today, kind of a podcast two parts, and
- 5:29Speaker 1: I think it should be a conversation. So that's the plan. Um,
- 5:32Speaker 1: Are you down with that? Dan? I'll tell you this,
- 5:36Speaker 1: If I was to hack into any software in the world,
- 5:41Speaker 1: I would hack into Onyx, and I would hack in
- 5:45Speaker 1: to guys who are really good hunters, and I'd find
- 5:49Speaker 1: all their spots. That is how I would cheat the system.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Now would you would you? I'm gonna say that you
- 5:55Speaker 1: would use this power for good, and you would look
- 5:59Speaker 1: at the good spot and you wouldn't go and hunt
- 6:01Speaker 1: their spots. You would simply use it to build up
- 6:03Speaker 1: a data use in your mind of how to choose
- 6:05Speaker 1: the right spot in the future. That's that's what you mean, right,
- 6:08Speaker 1: That is that couldn't be more far from the truth.
- 6:13Speaker 1: I figured, Uh, like I would be at so many
- 6:18Speaker 1: places that so many times that people would start to
- 6:22Speaker 1: guess that I actually had the ONYX system. Dude, only
- 6:27Speaker 1: I know about this spot, How is this dude here?
- 6:30Speaker 1: And at my last spot, and like I start running
- 6:33Speaker 1: into people like in different states at the exact same location.
- 6:38Speaker 1: That'd be one amazing practical joke to like if you
- 6:42Speaker 1: somehow get buddies on x waight points saying like you
- 6:45Speaker 1: happen to note someplace that he doesn't really care about,
- 6:48Speaker 1: and so you just start like messing with him. I
- 6:49Speaker 1: would like to do that. Do you and me ever
- 6:51Speaker 1: hunt together? If this io I do pans out, I'm
- 6:54Speaker 1: totally Um, yeah, dude, there's a lot of interesting It's
- 7:01Speaker 1: just it's it's it's a good tool about that. Um.
- 7:06Speaker 1: So yeah, well we'll chat with them here in a minute. Um,
- 7:12Speaker 1: let's let's let's talk current events events first us before
- 7:15Speaker 1: we touch on anything else. UM cwy UM. We used
- 7:22Speaker 1: to all the aubub in the news, right yep. Yeah.
- 7:26Speaker 1: So for folks in the white tailed community, you've probably
- 7:29Speaker 1: seen stuff on Facebook popping around. You've probably seen it
- 7:32Speaker 1: on the mainstream news even now to UM. But there's
- 7:36Speaker 1: been two CWD related stories have been going all over
- 7:39Speaker 1: the place that begin of people reaching out asking for
- 7:43Speaker 1: like my thoughts on it, or asking for us to
- 7:47Speaker 1: clarify things for people or set the records straight. So
- 7:49Speaker 1: I want to take a second here to do that. UM.
- 7:52Speaker 1: So the first piece I think when you talk about
- 7:54Speaker 1: is the zombie dear articles. UM, you've seen that as well. Correct.
- 8:00Speaker 1: There was a interview done a little while back with
- 8:05Speaker 1: I believe it was a professor from the University of
- 8:07Speaker 1: Minnesota UM, and he made a comment more along the
- 8:13Speaker 1: lens of and speaking about CTB in general. UM. He
- 8:17Speaker 1: mentioned the fact that while no one has been proven
- 8:20Speaker 1: to get no human has been proven to kept to
- 8:24Speaker 1: h to get c w D from eating CTWD positive deer.
- 8:28Speaker 1: He made the claim, UM in so many words in
- 8:31Speaker 1: paraphrasing here, but he made the claim that he thought
- 8:33Speaker 1: it was possible or likely or inevitable at some point
- 8:37Speaker 1: that could jump the barrier said something along those lines. Um,
- 8:41Speaker 1: nothing that has been proven true, I wanted to point out,
- 8:44Speaker 1: but he made a comment like that, and then someone
- 8:47Speaker 1: wrote a news article headline about talking about how there's
- 8:49Speaker 1: the zombie deer walking over twenty four states. UM. And
- 8:53Speaker 1: then this thing just blew up and like every news
- 8:56Speaker 1: site out there, every media or was reported zombie deer disease. UM.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Really kind of freaking non hunters out at a lot
- 9:04Speaker 1: of people that aren't actually hunters asked me like, what
- 9:07Speaker 1: is this thing? We're all gonna get sick? Um. And
- 9:12Speaker 1: it's an interesting thing because you and I both dam
- 9:15Speaker 1: we've talked many times here and on our elsewhere about
- 9:19Speaker 1: how CWD is something that you know, we need to
- 9:22Speaker 1: look at seriously, right, It's something that people should be
- 9:24Speaker 1: paying attention to. UM. But I think it happened here
- 9:28Speaker 1: is that it has got blown out of UM, blown
- 9:32Speaker 1: out of context and blown out of proportion, and you know,
- 9:35Speaker 1: blown into this thing that it probably isn't um, which
- 9:38Speaker 1: is probably just as dangerous as pretending CWT doesn't matter. Right, UM.
- 9:43Speaker 1: I think you know I think the main point here
- 9:46Speaker 1: is if you have anyone asking about these zombie deer articles, um,
- 9:50Speaker 1: let them know that cdw D is something that is real.
- 9:54Speaker 1: It is something that's serious, is something that could have
- 9:56Speaker 1: negative ramifications in the long run for dear population in
- 10:00Speaker 1: deer hunting. So we gotta get seriously, um. But um,
- 10:04Speaker 1: you know it has not been proven, isn't. There's not
- 10:06Speaker 1: been a single instance yet where seated has crossed the
- 10:09Speaker 1: species bear to humans. And there have been tens of
- 10:13Speaker 1: thousands of deer probably eating probably thousands of deer that
- 10:16Speaker 1: have been eaten that were positive, and you know there's
- 10:19Speaker 1: been no case yet. So so that's that is good, Right,
- 10:23Speaker 1: that's good. That hasn't happened yet. And it's not to
- 10:25Speaker 1: say that, you know, I guess you can't say one
- 10:29Speaker 1: way that if it could happen because I'm not a scientist,
- 10:31Speaker 1: but I certainly I don't know. What have we talked
- 10:36Speaker 1: about this, dan, would you eat if you if you
- 10:38Speaker 1: shot a deer and you got it tested and it
- 10:41Speaker 1: was positive, do you eat that deer? So that's that's
- 10:44Speaker 1: kind of crazy for me. Here's what I will say.
- 10:49Speaker 1: I don't have to test my dear right now, right,
- 10:51Speaker 1: should I test, my dear? Maybe I don't, right, But
- 10:58Speaker 1: if I knew that at there that there is even
- 11:03Speaker 1: a one percent chance that you know, or less than
- 11:05Speaker 1: a one percent chance that for some reason it skips
- 11:10Speaker 1: to a you know, it could potentially skip to a human,
- 11:13Speaker 1: which there has been no scientific uh you know, data
- 11:18Speaker 1: to back that. Um. It does have me thinking, though
- 11:23Speaker 1: I I feed all the deer I kill, you know,
- 11:26Speaker 1: to my family. My kids eat the deer meat. And
- 11:29Speaker 1: that's the only thing that would concern me. However, if
- 11:32Speaker 1: I knew for a fact after I shot at the
- 11:34Speaker 1: deer was c w D positive, I don't know if
- 11:38Speaker 1: I would Yeah, yeah, that's it's you know, it would
- 11:43Speaker 1: kill me to do that, you know, to killing it,
- 11:45Speaker 1: to kill a deer and then just have to throw
- 11:47Speaker 1: it all in the trash. I mean I would be.
- 11:50Speaker 1: I would absolutely hate that. But to your point, um,
- 11:54Speaker 1: I would be. Even though like you said, there's no
- 11:57Speaker 1: nothing shown it can happen, you still have that little
- 12:00Speaker 1: in the back of your mind that says it could
- 12:02Speaker 1: be the first for you know, this could be something
- 12:05Speaker 1: that takes decades and decades of decades to show up
- 12:08Speaker 1: and all of a sudden. You know, we found out, um,
- 12:11Speaker 1: something's going on there, and the Center four Disease Control
- 12:16Speaker 1: UM does recommend that you not eat CWD positive deer
- 12:21Speaker 1: out of a kind of an abundance of caution. You know,
- 12:24Speaker 1: they're they're saying all the same things. We've has not
- 12:26Speaker 1: been proven to jump the species bear, but they recommend
- 12:29Speaker 1: cushion and and not doing it. So that's kind of
- 12:31Speaker 1: what I'm doing. I did have UM three three three
- 12:37Speaker 1: deer to which I killed one that bloody killed UM
- 12:41Speaker 1: off of the main Michigan property to hunt. We had
- 12:43Speaker 1: tests for CWD UM and and nothing positive. So UM,
- 12:49Speaker 1: so that's good. But it's definitely something I'm thinking about,
- 12:51Speaker 1: and you know, it would be very scary and it
- 12:54Speaker 1: would change a whole lot of things. If someday we
- 12:56Speaker 1: found out that it did jump the bear, then that
- 12:58Speaker 1: changes everything, and that's that's a really really bad scenare
- 13:01Speaker 1: that they hope never happened, and that would that would
- 13:04Speaker 1: take this whole than at some different levels. So let's
- 13:06Speaker 1: just hope that never happened and we're not gonna have
- 13:07Speaker 1: to worry about that. But UM, but I think it
- 13:10Speaker 1: just you know, it's something you're thinking about, which leads
- 13:15Speaker 1: to the second big thing on the CTTD front um
- 13:19Speaker 1: within the news lately, which was this video about a
- 13:22Speaker 1: cure for c w D. Now did you watch that video? Dan? So?
- 13:26Speaker 1: I read something about how this guy says that it
- 13:29Speaker 1: can be cured and that, uh, he thinks or I
- 13:33Speaker 1: don't know if he thinks, or the research showed that
- 13:36Speaker 1: his research showed that bacteria and the prion have something
- 13:41Speaker 1: in common, or it's like the priyan travels through a
- 13:44Speaker 1: bacteria or vice versa or something like that. And then
- 13:47Speaker 1: that's as far as I went. Okay, yeah, so you're
- 13:50Speaker 1: you're getting there. Um, the basic gist of the video, um,
- 13:53Speaker 1: and this is like at a press conference and the
- 13:55Speaker 1: video that went viral that everyone was getting shared. It
- 13:58Speaker 1: was just like an embedded video without a title that
- 14:02Speaker 1: you couldn't see like a lot of details about who
- 14:05Speaker 1: this was or what was going on. But it just
- 14:06Speaker 1: looks like an official looking person in front of like
- 14:08Speaker 1: an official looking like capital building or something. And then
- 14:11Speaker 1: you could see there's like a an insignia on the podium.
- 14:15Speaker 1: It just had like a very formal official look. So
- 14:18Speaker 1: if you're watching this without knowing anything, it almost looked
- 14:21Speaker 1: like someone from the state of Pennsylvania, like Pennsylvania DNR
- 14:25Speaker 1: or someone was making this announcement had a very official,
- 14:29Speaker 1: real valid verify I kind of feel to it, UM,
- 14:34Speaker 1: But that was not actually the case. This is not
- 14:37Speaker 1: the State of Pennsylvania's you know, DNR fishing game. This
- 14:40Speaker 1: is not the United States and Wildlife for anything in
- 14:43Speaker 1: this announcement. This was just a guy who works for
- 14:47Speaker 1: the spokesman for UM, an organization called the Unified Sportsman
- 14:51Speaker 1: of Pennsylvania. So I don't I don't know anything about
- 14:54Speaker 1: this organization out and anything positive about it or negative
- 14:57Speaker 1: about US. I can't take a stance on this at all.
- 14:59Speaker 1: I'm simp is saying that this was this was a
- 15:01Speaker 1: an organization of deer hunters making this statement UM, and
- 15:07Speaker 1: the issue with it, well, well, I guess let me
- 15:09Speaker 1: explain the statement. First. The statement was like you said
- 15:12Speaker 1: that they're claiming there's this cure c w D based
- 15:15Speaker 1: off some research that was happening down UM. God, I
- 15:20Speaker 1: should have double checks Louisiana State University. I believe UM,
- 15:23Speaker 1: a doctor Bastion and this professor down their researcher down
- 15:29Speaker 1: there believed that he found UM that the c w D,
- 15:36Speaker 1: the prions that we have all seen be associated with
- 15:39Speaker 1: CWD and that we believe are the cause and the
- 15:41Speaker 1: transferring agent of CWD. His theory was that they're actually
- 15:46Speaker 1: not what is transferring c w D. They are actually
- 15:50Speaker 1: just like a symptom of CWD, and that there was
- 15:53Speaker 1: actually a bacteria called a spiral plasma bacteria that is
- 15:57Speaker 1: the effective agent, and then primes were like a side
- 16:00Speaker 1: effect of it almost, so we were just kind of
- 16:02Speaker 1: seeing the side effect but everywhere, Um, while it's this
- 16:05Speaker 1: bacteria that is actually the issue. And since it's a
- 16:08Speaker 1: bacteria that's causing the issue, he said that, hey, I
- 16:10Speaker 1: can develop essentially a cure to that that can be
- 16:14Speaker 1: that can be fed to deer um. We can develop
- 16:16Speaker 1: ast of different things to deal with in the captives
- 16:19Speaker 1: serving industry. We could apply something in mass quantity to
- 16:22Speaker 1: wild deer um. And then this spokes whoever this was,
- 16:27Speaker 1: UM was then saying, not only will this cure c
- 16:29Speaker 1: w D, UM, this could also be used to cure
- 16:32Speaker 1: other degenerative brain diseases UM such christ fields, yakos and
- 16:37Speaker 1: humans um and all these other different things like that
- 16:40Speaker 1: could deal like scrapes and sheep and mad cow disease
- 16:42Speaker 1: and cows and very very broad impressive statements like how
- 16:47Speaker 1: this is is going to change the world. Um. And it
- 16:50Speaker 1: was really exciting hearing it, because like, yes, that is
- 16:53Speaker 1: what we need. We need some kind of real solution
- 16:55Speaker 1: to this issue of CWD. UM. The bar is that
- 17:01Speaker 1: no one has been able to back up this research
- 17:03Speaker 1: that this Dr Bashan and I guess is I understand.
- 17:06Speaker 1: I've checked with a number of different people in this
- 17:08Speaker 1: field who have said that it's really interesting theory, wish
- 17:13Speaker 1: it worked, but no one's been able to replicate it.
- 17:15Speaker 1: No one's been able to verify, no peer of view
- 17:17Speaker 1: has approved it. Um. You know, basically everyone I talked
- 17:21Speaker 1: to us that we wish this is true, we wish
- 17:22Speaker 1: it could be proven, but no other expert in space
- 17:26Speaker 1: agreed with him and can in any way, um, you know,
- 17:29Speaker 1: replicate it, um and and show it would be true.
- 17:32Speaker 1: So I mean, I hope that maybe there's something new.
- 17:37Speaker 1: I hope that maybe that um they're onto something and
- 17:40Speaker 1: eventually there's going to be a cure. But the kind
- 17:43Speaker 1: of MythBuster thing right now is that this viral video,
- 17:47Speaker 1: it's not as proven as the gentleman in the video
- 17:50Speaker 1: would like you to think, Um, it seems like a
- 17:53Speaker 1: cure for CD. It's not a sure thing. This has
- 17:56Speaker 1: not been proven or replicated or verified or vie in
- 17:58Speaker 1: any kind of way. And um, you know, let's cross
- 18:01Speaker 1: stingers and hope something does happen. But right now, it's
- 18:03Speaker 1: not there. Right. And the crazy thing about this all
- 18:07Speaker 1: is I knew after getting into it and going to
- 18:10Speaker 1: a secondary source. And I think the National Deer Alliance,
- 18:14Speaker 1: uh made a post about listen, this would be nice,
- 18:18Speaker 1: but it's not accurate. Right, We don't know if this
- 18:22Speaker 1: is accurate or not. Number one, I think the video
- 18:24Speaker 1: is really old. And number two, it scares me. Like me,
- 18:31Speaker 1: I did my further research. I saw this, I questioned it,
- 18:34Speaker 1: I went to a reliable source like the National Deer Alliance,
- 18:38Speaker 1: and the next thing, I did you know or or
- 18:42Speaker 1: I did a little research on my own. But people
- 18:45Speaker 1: are literally commenting like, uh, we don't need to worry
- 18:48Speaker 1: about c w D anymore. You know, Ted Nugent was right,
- 18:51Speaker 1: or or you know, like all these people who are
- 18:54Speaker 1: were worried about like they they took that as problem solved,
- 18:58Speaker 1: and it's a problem solved. Yeah, it's this is a
- 19:03Speaker 1: great example of kind of UM click in social media
- 19:09Speaker 1: news issues. I mean, you just can't take what you
- 19:13Speaker 1: see on the internet for truth, right, have to get
- 19:15Speaker 1: you need to do a little bit of verifying, like said,
- 19:17Speaker 1: a little fact checking, check beautable sources, folks that are
- 19:21Speaker 1: you know, verified with some kind of level expertise, UM,
- 19:25Speaker 1: and see what's really good. And I think this is
- 19:27Speaker 1: one of those cases that a lot of people wanted
- 19:28Speaker 1: to be true so much that maybe there's like, yes,
- 19:31Speaker 1: that's what I've been waiting to see, um and want
- 19:34Speaker 1: to celebrate it. But I think the kind of the
- 19:36Speaker 1: moral of the story from this video and then the
- 19:38Speaker 1: zombie Dear story, the big takeaway from me at least
- 19:41Speaker 1: is that these are just great reminders Again the one
- 19:44Speaker 1: single thing that I think we can all agree on
- 19:46Speaker 1: about CWD, and that's that we need more answers, we
- 19:50Speaker 1: need more research, We need more studies done find out
- 19:52Speaker 1: what really is happening, UM, because there's just there's too
- 19:56Speaker 1: many questions mars right now, there's so many controversies around it.
- 19:59Speaker 1: Just need to get some sell stuff, figure it out,
- 20:01Speaker 1: so UM, there will one step in the right direction.
- 20:05Speaker 1: There was a bill introduced to the House and the
- 20:09Speaker 1: set earlier this month, UM called the Chronic Wasting Disease
- 20:13Speaker 1: Transmission and Today Study Act, which essentially, UM if this passes,
- 20:19Speaker 1: to authorize a special federal study done to help determine
- 20:23Speaker 1: how DWT spreads, how it could be prevented in the wild,
- 20:26Speaker 1: and it will you know, help divert funds towards something
- 20:29Speaker 1: like this too. So every time that we see a
- 20:33Speaker 1: bill like this is gonna fund get fund for research.
- 20:35Speaker 1: I think that's something that us in the white up
- 20:37Speaker 1: community we have to kind of really around any It's
- 20:40Speaker 1: it's a simple thing whether you want whether you what
- 20:44Speaker 1: you believe in everything that's being said about CTV or
- 20:46Speaker 1: whether you are in the Teunusian camp and want to
- 20:49Speaker 1: claim it's not a thing. Whichever way are UM, we
- 20:53Speaker 1: want answers and research is the only way we're gonna
- 20:56Speaker 1: get those answers. So I think that's the we can
- 20:57Speaker 1: come together on and and support fund and support things
- 21:00Speaker 1: like that. So this is the Chronic Wasting Disease Transmission
- 21:04Speaker 1: in servid Day Study Act, which is a mouthful. So
- 21:08Speaker 1: you could quite simply remember S three eight two. That's
- 21:13Speaker 1: the bill. S three a two. You can search that
- 21:16Speaker 1: online and get the full details on it, but point
- 21:20Speaker 1: being reached to your senators or your representatives and let
- 21:23Speaker 1: them know, Hey, this is something that matters to us. Um.
- 21:26Speaker 1: There's a whole lot of deer hunters out there in
- 21:27Speaker 1: our state. This is something that matters a lot to
- 21:30Speaker 1: the outdoor economy and community. UM, give them a little bump.
- 21:33Speaker 1: I think this is one of those things that we
- 21:35Speaker 1: can maybe make a difference on. So UM. Absolutely, that's
- 21:38Speaker 1: c W D P s A for the day. UM,
- 21:42Speaker 1: moving on more fun things. Shed hunting. Have you done
- 21:46Speaker 1: any ship hunting since we talked last Uh? Dude, I
- 21:49Speaker 1: got six inches or eight inches of snow in my
- 21:52Speaker 1: front yard and that's after like a day and a
- 21:54Speaker 1: half of falling. Now. However, the good news is is
- 21:59Speaker 1: down where I hunt, there's no snow on the ground
- 22:02Speaker 1: right now, which has me a little worried like other
- 22:06Speaker 1: people might get to my spots before I do. Wow,
- 22:09Speaker 1: I assume that you're gonna have all sorts of snow
- 22:11Speaker 1: on there. Nope. Uh, there's a like almost like a
- 22:14Speaker 1: clear cut band that came through Iowa. Uh and uh,
- 22:20Speaker 1: like the lower parts got a couple of inches, we
- 22:23Speaker 1: got about eight and uh we still and we that
- 22:27Speaker 1: a couple more systems came through dumping four at a time,
- 22:31Speaker 1: while down south didn't get any. So um, other than
- 22:35Speaker 1: the big drifts, you know, most of the fields are
- 22:37Speaker 1: clear and we got some rain that helped out the
- 22:40Speaker 1: melting process as well. Oh man, well that might change
- 22:43Speaker 1: my plans because I was thinking that I always going
- 22:45Speaker 1: to be a complete bust for shed Railly. I was
- 22:47Speaker 1: thinking about going down to southern Ohio. Yeah. Now here's
- 22:50Speaker 1: the deal, though, I think there's two more chances in
- 22:53Speaker 1: the next ten days for us to get snow. Um,
- 22:57Speaker 1: and I don't know what part of the states you're
- 22:59Speaker 1: gonna get it. Yeah, but it's in the forecast. Okay. Well,
- 23:04Speaker 1: I'm just gonna keep on texting you and bugging you,
- 23:06Speaker 1: um and hopefully there's not If if there's not snow,
- 23:12Speaker 1: can I meet with you at some point during that
- 23:14Speaker 1: time period You can be around so I know you've
- 23:16Speaker 1: got stuff going, but hopefully we can find a little
- 23:18Speaker 1: time to get some get some walking in. Yeah. Absolutely.
- 23:21Speaker 1: I don't know what the schedule is right now, and
- 23:23Speaker 1: we're gonna we're talking about a little bit about that
- 23:26Speaker 1: um here in a couple of minutes. But the Iowa
- 23:29Speaker 1: Deer Classic is this weekend, and I have to go
- 23:32Speaker 1: uh work do a little work there, and then the
- 23:35Speaker 1: following weekend UH is something that I have to attend
- 23:39Speaker 1: uh and is also shed Rally, So I have it's
- 23:43Speaker 1: gonna be the next two weekends are gonna be really busy. Yeah, well,
- 23:47Speaker 1: well I'll be there at some points, so hopeful. So hey,
- 23:52Speaker 1: if I have to take a day off of work,
- 23:53Speaker 1: I'll take a day off of work. Man. Hey, speaking
- 23:56Speaker 1: of and I hope that happened. Um, it's going shed rally.
- 24:00Speaker 1: So we're doing a little thing with Wired to Hunt,
- 24:03Speaker 1: which you should bot out year old wire Hunt hat
- 24:05Speaker 1: or shirt day because I figured there's a whole lot
- 24:08Speaker 1: of folks that listen to Wired to Hunt that also
- 24:12Speaker 1: participate in shed Rally and want to figure out some
- 24:15Speaker 1: way to kind of thank people who have been supporting
- 24:17Speaker 1: wire to Hunt, rocking the wire dunt hat and T
- 24:20Speaker 1: shirts and things like that. And actually, interestingly, you and
- 24:22Speaker 1: me shed hunted together during shed really right when the
- 24:27Speaker 1: current wire hunt low hats and shirts came out, do
- 24:30Speaker 1: you remember that, Yes, I was rocking I think wired
- 24:33Speaker 1: dun hat and teacher and we're shed hunting your spots.
- 24:36Speaker 1: And that was the first year of shed. Like, we
- 24:37Speaker 1: were walking all over the place and we just be
- 24:39Speaker 1: like shed Relly. Yeah, Corey was there too, Yeah, Cola
- 24:43Speaker 1: was that was on. Corey fell asleep in the truck. Well,
- 24:45Speaker 1: Corey fell asleep, and you guys weren't. You guys weren't
- 24:50Speaker 1: very good at walking uh straight lines. And I remember
- 24:53Speaker 1: you guys found a shed at the exact same time
- 24:57Speaker 1: and then you looked at each other and you guys
- 24:59Speaker 1: were both so polite. You're like, oh, man, you can
- 25:01Speaker 1: you can get it. And he was like, no, man, no,
- 25:03Speaker 1: you can have it. You can have it. No, man,
- 25:05Speaker 1: you can you can get it. You can get it.
- 25:07Speaker 1: It was pretty funny. Yeah, that was I remember that. Well.
- 25:10Speaker 1: Um so, so that is when jef Rally began. Now
- 25:14Speaker 1: it's like five years later, and um so, the long
- 25:18Speaker 1: way of saying, during Shelly writes this white Tailed Properts
- 25:21Speaker 1: deal where they get a whole bunch of folks encourage
- 25:23Speaker 1: everybody out there to go and shut onto the same
- 25:26Speaker 1: weekend and if you post photos and videos for the
- 25:29Speaker 1: hashtag shed Rally, um you get ended to win a
- 25:32Speaker 1: bunch of prizes from White Tailed Properties. And now this year. Now,
- 25:36Speaker 1: I'm going to do a giveaway with wire Don't so
- 25:39Speaker 1: if you participate in shed Rally and you post pictures
- 25:41Speaker 1: with that sed Relly hashtag, if you're wearing a wired
- 25:44Speaker 1: hat or shirt and you're out there and you put
- 25:47Speaker 1: pictures and videos, you'll also be entered into another giveaway.
- 25:50Speaker 1: And we're going to get away five prizes. One person
- 25:54Speaker 1: is gonna win a Yeti Tundra cooler. It's that the
- 25:58Speaker 1: Tundra Halts is their new coolers, got Wilson you can
- 26:00Speaker 1: pull around. Another one of these is gonna win a
- 26:03Speaker 1: Yeti load out bucket, one of the big fancy buckets,
- 26:06Speaker 1: fully loaded with all the different successors and stuff lids
- 26:08Speaker 1: and tool straps and seats and interesting things like that.
- 26:13Speaker 1: Another person is gonna win a Yetti there six ounce
- 26:15Speaker 1: Rambler bottle. Another winner is gonna win at first like
- 26:18Speaker 1: catalyst jacket and pant, which is the set of white
- 26:23Speaker 1: bell gear I wore a lot during this pass hunting season.
- 26:26Speaker 1: And then finally someone's gonna win a Vortex Impact range finder.
- 26:31Speaker 1: So pretty sweet, right, pretty pretty sweet surprise. And all
- 26:34Speaker 1: you gotta do is where you're wired hunt gear during
- 26:37Speaker 1: shed Rally. Uh, and if that's what I'm gonna do
- 26:40Speaker 1: is after shed Rally, I want to go click on
- 26:43Speaker 1: the shed Reley hashtag and actually add put the wiretunt
- 26:45Speaker 1: hashtag in there too, So where your wired dount gear,
- 26:48Speaker 1: put wiretunt hashtag in there too. That will make it
- 26:50Speaker 1: a little bit eager for me to sort through. Um.
- 26:53Speaker 1: But basically, I'll just hit the hashtag in my instagrament
- 26:56Speaker 1: feed and I'll just scroll through it, find out the
- 26:58Speaker 1: people that wore the wire dunt gear, everyone's names in
- 27:01Speaker 1: the hat and we're just gonna randomly select five people
- 27:04Speaker 1: and uh you'll get a sweet prizes for for rock
- 27:06Speaker 1: and world hunt gear during shed rail. So, um, alright,
- 27:09Speaker 1: that'd be fun. Heck yeah, heck yeah, I'm down. Do
- 27:13Speaker 1: I do I qualify or not? Yes? Sure you can,
- 27:16Speaker 1: you can. Okay, I'm just gonna take like fifty pictures
- 27:23Speaker 1: of the same exact shed. I'm gonna be watching out
- 27:28Speaker 1: for that, okay, all right, all right, um so yeah
- 27:32Speaker 1: that's my that's excited. Shed Rally News. We talked about
- 27:35Speaker 1: cd WD issues. Um, main topic today, Dan, once you've
- 27:41Speaker 1: got a violence is going to be Western white tail stuff. Um.
- 27:45Speaker 1: Now I know you get the Western elk stuff. You're
- 27:47Speaker 1: in treged by Western bule Deer. Have any of my
- 27:49Speaker 1: stories about my trips out there in Tregue? Yeah, oh absolutely.
- 27:53Speaker 1: I mean I've already looked at Wyoming in Montana whitetail hunts. Yeah,
- 27:58Speaker 1: it's uh, you mean you you you love the sandhills
- 28:02Speaker 1: and we chased mules out there. It's and I've chased
- 28:05Speaker 1: white tails out there too. I guess you did see
- 28:08Speaker 1: a couple of day ones in here. Yep, I mean
- 28:11Speaker 1: it's it's. Um, I'm having a hard time not going
- 28:15Speaker 1: up there every year and doing it, which makes it
- 28:17Speaker 1: tough because I love al con Um. But I am,
- 28:20Speaker 1: just as we were talking about a few weeks ago,
- 28:23Speaker 1: for some reason, I'm just getting more and more infatuated
- 28:25Speaker 1: with my original infatuation. And I'm having a hard time
- 28:29Speaker 1: saying that I won't do a white tail hunt in
- 28:31Speaker 1: September West to do an elk instead. I'm having a
- 28:33Speaker 1: hard time doing both, just you know, being away of
- 28:36Speaker 1: two weeks at a time. Um, So this year, I
- 28:38Speaker 1: don't think I'm gonna do it hunt just because I
- 28:40Speaker 1: really want to do my white tail hunt. It's just
- 28:42Speaker 1: I don't know, I don't know why, but you just
- 28:44Speaker 1: see so many deer. They act, you know, they're just
- 28:46Speaker 1: very visible. It's cool, really cool age class. You're seeing
- 28:51Speaker 1: older deer in the big country, the big skies. Um,
- 28:55Speaker 1: I don't know, it's been it's been a fun thing
- 28:58Speaker 1: for me. And you definitely called a Western bug in general.
- 29:01Speaker 1: Just yeah, the Western hunt. Just how different that is? Right? Yeah, absolutely,
- 29:06Speaker 1: It's something that I think about every day. Yeah. So
- 29:09Speaker 1: have you made any more progress in your western plans
- 29:12Speaker 1: since we've talked like three weeks ago about this topic. Yeah,
- 29:14Speaker 1: I mean not too much. Not too much playing on
- 29:16Speaker 1: the on the elk side of thing, because really, all
- 29:19Speaker 1: I have to do is just organize my gear, you know,
- 29:22Speaker 1: practice shooting, get conditioning, uh and pay the tag. Right,
- 29:26Speaker 1: the place is already there. I already know where I'm
- 29:28Speaker 1: where I would go again, the mule deer side of
- 29:32Speaker 1: things in South Dakota. I've talked with a lot of
- 29:36Speaker 1: people since the last time we talked. And when I
- 29:38Speaker 1: say a lot, I mean like five or six different people,
- 29:40Speaker 1: and they were gracious enough to talk to me about
- 29:43Speaker 1: how they work at some little tips and tricks that
- 29:46Speaker 1: they use, uh um, how to locate them, how to
- 29:49Speaker 1: you know, set up on stocks and and all that
- 29:52Speaker 1: good stuff, and even you know, not necessarily like hacking
- 29:55Speaker 1: into the onyx system to find specific pin points. But
- 29:59Speaker 1: they're just like, hey, man, check out this area. Hey,
- 30:02Speaker 1: why are you thinking about doing South Dakota instead of
- 30:06Speaker 1: going back to your Nebraska stock that you had population
- 30:10Speaker 1: strictly population? Um, I think I would have more up
- 30:13Speaker 1: your population, yeah, mule deer population. I think I will
- 30:16Speaker 1: have a better chance of getting a stock in um
- 30:21Speaker 1: in South Dakota on public land than I will on
- 30:24Speaker 1: this farm in uh in Nebraska. Interesting. Um, I'm very
- 30:31Speaker 1: interested to see how that goes. It's it's a hunt.
- 30:33Speaker 1: That's that's always been on my radar, and I e
- 30:38Speaker 1: again it's the time thing, like what do you you
- 30:40Speaker 1: gotta you gotta pick and choose, and I'm gonna have
- 30:42Speaker 1: to pick that eventually and try so I'm gonna be
- 30:44Speaker 1: watching your experience, CLO. What are you gonna do? As
- 30:47Speaker 1: far as um have you have you thought through like
- 30:50Speaker 1: logistics to say, in a camp you tell you gonna
- 30:52Speaker 1: rent a cabin. If I do it, I'm doing I'm
- 30:56Speaker 1: doing it as gangster as possible, and I'm gonna be
- 30:59Speaker 1: sleeping in the back of my truck. I have a
- 31:01Speaker 1: topper so that but that makes it easy. Um, you know,
- 31:05Speaker 1: eat everything out of the back of my truck, have
- 31:07Speaker 1: a cooler with me, um, you know all that, all
- 31:11Speaker 1: that stuff. There's some BLM land around there, so I
- 31:14Speaker 1: can definitely sleep on the BLM land. There's also, like
- 31:19Speaker 1: I think there's some campsites around there as well. Um,
- 31:22Speaker 1: I don't want to do a hotel if unless I like,
- 31:25Speaker 1: for some reason have to. But I want to do it.
- 31:28Speaker 1: I want to do it, you know, as hard as possible. Yeah, man,
- 31:32Speaker 1: that's the way to do it. Highly. I mean, you've
- 31:34Speaker 1: seen my back truck hunts for this last couple of
- 31:36Speaker 1: years and something about it. I just I love coming
- 31:40Speaker 1: back to the truck after full day hunting. And for me,
- 31:42Speaker 1: I don't know if you're doing this with anyone else,
- 31:44Speaker 1: but I also I kind of like these solo hunts.
- 31:46Speaker 1: When you just get back, it's dark, it's pitch black.
- 31:49Speaker 1: You you drink a cold beer at the batail gate.
- 31:52Speaker 1: The end of the night by headlamp, you kick back
- 31:55Speaker 1: and you're skipping bag. You know, there's nothing but Cody's
- 31:58Speaker 1: howling in the distance. There's something cool just being out
- 32:00Speaker 1: there on your own. That's that's that's nice and that
- 32:03Speaker 1: you just don't get when you're in a hotel. UM.
- 32:06Speaker 1: So camping I think is a good choice. In our
- 32:08Speaker 1: conversation that we're about to have here with Zack and
- 32:11Speaker 1: and Eric, which I recorded for this UM, we actually
- 32:14Speaker 1: get into some some thoughts on singing up Western camps too.
- 32:17Speaker 1: They've got a lot of experience setting up like UM
- 32:20Speaker 1: wall tents for bigger, longer trips, which is an interesting
- 32:23Speaker 1: thing too, which is something I haven't done UM, but
- 32:26Speaker 1: that's an interesting thing to keep in mind as well.
- 32:28Speaker 1: Off to do a group with a bunch of people
- 32:31Speaker 1: sending up a big tense not a bad idea. Me
- 32:33Speaker 1: and Me and Andy May when we did Nebraska Hunt,
- 32:36Speaker 1: we brought a big, like four percent tent. It wasn't
- 32:38Speaker 1: quite a wall tent, but it was been enough that
- 32:40Speaker 1: we could bring our grill inside a little like what
- 32:43Speaker 1: do you call it, not being honing but I'm blanking
- 32:48Speaker 1: on this word, but basically like a little outdoor covered
- 32:50Speaker 1: area with the grill, and then inside the tent we
- 32:53Speaker 1: set to camp chairs in the table and the cooler
- 32:56Speaker 1: so that we could eat inside because it's really cold
- 32:58Speaker 1: at night, so we could still eat inside the tent
- 33:00Speaker 1: and we had the other half of the time with
- 33:01Speaker 1: our sleeping bags or gear, and that was that was
- 33:04Speaker 1: pretty nice too. Um. I'm a big fan of the
- 33:08Speaker 1: hunting camping trips for white tails. It's it's not only
- 33:11Speaker 1: it's very common, but it's it's pretty cool. So I've
- 33:14Speaker 1: even thought about depends. Not maybe not every day, it's
- 33:17Speaker 1: because I live so close to where I hunt in Iowa.
- 33:22Speaker 1: But I even thought about maybe an early season, you know,
- 33:24Speaker 1: first week of October, if I'm going out there to
- 33:26Speaker 1: kill the dough, parked the truck next to a barn
- 33:29Speaker 1: at the at the farm, and you know, just chill
- 33:32Speaker 1: there overnight and you know, just hunt out the back
- 33:36Speaker 1: of the truck just one night. And I think I
- 33:38Speaker 1: still think that would be pretty fun. I think you're
- 33:41Speaker 1: right for sure. Um, maybe we'll come together some day,
- 33:45Speaker 1: do that. Amen for it? I'm all for it. Well,
- 33:51Speaker 1: well we'll talk about the later. Hopefully something happens. So, um,
- 33:55Speaker 1: you know, I totally forgot to mention something unrelated to
- 34:01Speaker 1: going west, but related to our lap topic. Can I
- 34:05Speaker 1: like hit the you know when someone's working the turntables
- 34:08Speaker 1: of the DJ booth and they can yeah, but then
- 34:11Speaker 1: when they want to go backwards in time, then go
- 34:15Speaker 1: I mean yea, yeah, Well, I'm gonna hit the turntables, right,
- 34:20Speaker 1: I'm gonna rewind the tape and we're going back to
- 34:24Speaker 1: shed hunting because it's totally forgotten to tell you that
- 34:26Speaker 1: I have found the first sheds of the year. Yeah,
- 34:28Speaker 1: I saw that, dude, and I this is like, it's
- 34:36Speaker 1: not it's not anywhere close to shirting at all. No, no, no, no, okay,
- 34:43Speaker 1: although that's interesting, someone this. So we're going off the
- 34:47Speaker 1: rails real fast year. But we did live Mediator podcast
- 34:52Speaker 1: last weekend and um, really cool events. People came out
- 34:57Speaker 1: to see the podcast, and UM, I get out of
- 34:59Speaker 1: my truck after the show and I walk up and
- 35:02Speaker 1: I see someone. There's a ticket on the windshield. Son
- 35:04Speaker 1: of a gun. I got a ticket. I parked around
- 35:06Speaker 1: place and I walk up to it. It's it's not
- 35:08Speaker 1: like an official ticket, it's actually like theater tickets. And
- 35:12Speaker 1: across the back of the theater tickets it says holy
- 35:15Speaker 1: Field Lives. I'm like, oh man, that's kind of creepy
- 35:20Speaker 1: that someone news is my vehicle. What kind of funny too?
- 35:25Speaker 1: Oh buddy. Um, So that's that's all I've got on
- 35:28Speaker 1: holy Field. But but I am nope, not Western ut
- 35:36Speaker 1: in Michigan's slash. I am tentatively exploring and this is
- 35:44Speaker 1: definitely not a sure thing, but I'm kind of exploring
- 35:47Speaker 1: some different possible options to maybe try and purchase a
- 35:51Speaker 1: small hunting property in Michigan, possibly in Michigan, possibly in
- 35:58Speaker 1: northern Ohio and mother than Indiana because I'm kind of
- 36:01Speaker 1: kind of close to the border like that where they
- 36:03Speaker 1: all come together, um, and trying me like real small.
- 36:09Speaker 1: But I've had you know, we've kind of talked for
- 36:11Speaker 1: a long period of time about how I'd love to
- 36:12Speaker 1: do it someday. Right, We've had this conversation over the year.
- 36:15Speaker 1: Would love to do it, would love to do it,
- 36:16Speaker 1: would love to buy something small. Um. So I'm kind
- 36:19Speaker 1: of looking at some different routes and maybe being able
- 36:22Speaker 1: to do that, mostly because I think it would just
- 36:23Speaker 1: be like a really cool like project, like a content
- 36:28Speaker 1: thing to talk about on the podcast and to to
- 36:30Speaker 1: share across all the different things I'm doing. Like how
- 36:33Speaker 1: like we hear about we talk about people buying a
- 36:36Speaker 1: property and making something cool that we had Dan Press
- 36:39Speaker 1: on several years ago, you and me Dan talking to
- 36:42Speaker 1: and he was talking about, Yes, starts small by small property,
- 36:45Speaker 1: building something cool, flip it, and then by a little
- 36:48Speaker 1: bigger one and then you can do that over the
- 36:50Speaker 1: years and finally get to something that is we really want.
- 36:53Speaker 1: So I'm wondering maybe I should try to test the theory. Um.
- 36:56Speaker 1: And again, this is not a sure thing at all.
- 36:58Speaker 1: This is something I'm just had to fiddle in with
- 37:00Speaker 1: at the moment um. But I did find a small
- 37:04Speaker 1: property that was very instriguing, and I walked it the
- 37:08Speaker 1: other day and found three sheds on it. Yeah, let
- 37:13Speaker 1: me guess one of them is a boon and crockett
- 37:15Speaker 1: from a boot and crockett. No, okay, that's just your luck. Yeah,
- 37:19Speaker 1: my lucks are pretty good lately. No, like a spike
- 37:24Speaker 1: two pointer and a shed from last year at least
- 37:28Speaker 1: year old then would have been a four points side,
- 37:30Speaker 1: but in a nice point like a hundred, like a
- 37:33Speaker 1: hundred hundred tenants eight point or maybe something like that. Um.
- 37:37Speaker 1: But encouraging, you know, walking a property, just trying to
- 37:40Speaker 1: see what we think about it, um, and finding some
- 37:42Speaker 1: antlers just as you're checking it out. Um. That was
- 37:45Speaker 1: cool and the property is very interesting. I'll wait to
- 37:50Speaker 1: talk about this property too much until we get you know,
- 37:53Speaker 1: if it becomes a real thing. But um, but yeah,
- 37:57Speaker 1: a whole bunch of possible things to talk about if
- 37:59Speaker 1: if this whole idea comes together. So T B D
- 38:03Speaker 1: and all that dan. Um, So that I think is
- 38:09Speaker 1: is all I want to talk about today. We talked
- 38:10Speaker 1: about sheds, We talked about CWD, talked about how we
- 38:15Speaker 1: would love coming out west and how something you should
- 38:17Speaker 1: think about. How the rest of our conversation was Zack
- 38:20Speaker 1: and Eric be pretty interesting because they've got a lot
- 38:22Speaker 1: of unique experience. Um. Anything else you want to cover,
- 38:25Speaker 1: dam No, I'm good. I I just got the text
- 38:28Speaker 1: from the wife that says, wrap it up. Okay, okay,
- 38:33Speaker 1: yes we'll wrap it up. UM. I do want to
- 38:36Speaker 1: make one quick announcement, which is is not as much
- 38:39Speaker 1: as not fun thing to talk about at all. Um,
- 38:41Speaker 1: but I just want to, um, you know, just say
- 38:46Speaker 1: a few words about the tragedy that we had in
- 38:49Speaker 1: the white Tail community here recently. Someone that you and
- 38:52Speaker 1: I both knew well, Um Todd Bringnits, the owner of
- 38:56Speaker 1: White white Knuckle Productions, and he did wicked street gear
- 39:00Speaker 1: or a tree thrasher. UM passed away UM recently an
- 39:07Speaker 1: eight TV accident. And you and I acted Dan. We
- 39:11Speaker 1: both met at the White Knuckle Film Productions film school
- 39:15Speaker 1: many years ago. UM, so that is you know, that's
- 39:19Speaker 1: where this whole thing kind of started. And uh, you
- 39:23Speaker 1: know a lot of people were really positively um influenced
- 39:27Speaker 1: by Odd. He He brought a lot of enthusiasm excitement
- 39:30Speaker 1: to everything he did in the White Tailed world. And
- 39:32Speaker 1: I think, UM just a very very very very sad thing. UM.
- 39:37Speaker 1: And he left behind a wife and two months old
- 39:40Speaker 1: UM son. So I just wanted to mention this fact that, UM,
- 39:45Speaker 1: there is a go fund me right now that is
- 39:48Speaker 1: helping raise funds to help over the medical costs were
- 39:51Speaker 1: incurred over the last week or so. UM, you know
- 39:54Speaker 1: while Todd was fighting this, and UM, I think anyone
- 39:58Speaker 1: has a little extra forgive to help out K and
- 40:00Speaker 1: their son Bagger. UM. That did a great way to
- 40:03Speaker 1: try and do that, UM, and you can I will
- 40:06Speaker 1: have a link to this on the show notes for
- 40:10Speaker 1: a podcast. You can go contribute to that go fund
- 40:12Speaker 1: me there, or if you go to the White Knuckle
- 40:14Speaker 1: Film Productions UM Facebook page. Well, I'm sure they'll have
- 40:18Speaker 1: a link there, or you could go to go fund
- 40:20Speaker 1: me and search for Todd prenants there as well. UM,
- 40:23Speaker 1: and you'll be able to find a way to up there.
- 40:25Speaker 1: So just wanted to give our condolences as the wire
- 40:29Speaker 1: Dunk community to the Pregnants family and UM, you know,
- 40:33Speaker 1: if anyone can give, that's one way to do it. Otherwise,
- 40:36Speaker 1: let's keep everyone affected by this in our prayers and UM,
- 40:41Speaker 1: with that we will. I'll tell you what. Let me
- 40:44Speaker 1: tell a real quick story. So I was living in Alabama.
- 40:49Speaker 1: I got a phone call from my buddy Brent Rich
- 40:51Speaker 1: and I was out of Alabama, like I was checked out.
- 40:53Speaker 1: I was ready moved back to Iowa. And he's like, hey, man, uh,
- 40:56Speaker 1: you're doing any hunting down there. I'm like, no, Man,
- 40:58Speaker 1: all I do is work all the time. All I
- 40:59Speaker 1: do is He's like, Man, I met this dude. I'm
- 41:03Speaker 1: going I go shut hunting with him whatever. You know,
- 41:06Speaker 1: We're starting to hang out. He's like this hardcore white
- 41:08Speaker 1: tail nut right, And I'm like, oh cool, because I
- 41:12Speaker 1: started to miss hunting when I was working all that
- 41:14Speaker 1: all those hours down Alabama. I moved back to Iowa,
- 41:19Speaker 1: and you know, I have a girl. I have a
- 41:22Speaker 1: girlfriend at the time, I have uh, I have a
- 41:26Speaker 1: house that I just purchased. And uh. I get a
- 41:29Speaker 1: call from my buddy one night and he's like, Hey,
- 41:31Speaker 1: this dude Todd is at the bar with me. It's
- 41:34Speaker 1: a bar named Key, It's a the bar we always
- 41:35Speaker 1: used to hang out at called Kios. He's like, uh,
- 41:39Speaker 1: why don't you, Uh, why don't you come meet us
- 41:41Speaker 1: out for a couple of beers And I'm like, yeah, okay, man,
- 41:43Speaker 1: I'll do that. And uh So the first night I've
- 41:46Speaker 1: ever met Todd was at the bar with my buddy Brent,
- 41:50Speaker 1: and uh, Todd introduces himself and he goes, what's your name?
- 41:55Speaker 1: I said, I'm Dan, and he goes Dallas. And there
- 42:00Speaker 1: was no there was no music playing in this bar,
- 42:03Speaker 1: so I didn't know how he didn't understand me. I go,
- 42:07Speaker 1: I go, no, Dan, Dan Johnson and he goes Dallas,
- 42:14Speaker 1: Dallas for Worth And I'm not shooting you. The very
- 42:18Speaker 1: first night that I met him is the night I
- 42:21Speaker 1: got the name Dallas for Worth, and people to this
- 42:25Speaker 1: day still call me by that. That's amazing. I guess
- 42:29Speaker 1: I didn't really came from that. For night very first
- 42:32Speaker 1: night I ever met while that's that's the story man,
- 42:36Speaker 1: and uh and I yeah, man, it's I think a
- 42:40Speaker 1: lot of people can can point to Todd or things
- 42:44Speaker 1: that he put on that helped bring a lot of
- 42:46Speaker 1: us together and brought a lot of joy to the
- 42:49Speaker 1: the hunting community. Um yeah, Like the first time I
- 42:53Speaker 1: ever heard about you as was on one of the
- 42:55Speaker 1: White Knuckle production DVDs, one of those that you were
- 42:58Speaker 1: on with Todd, and I remember, and that's a wild character.
- 43:02Speaker 1: He's an interesting dude. And then when we met, you know,
- 43:05Speaker 1: we kicked off our own friendship. Um. So just just
- 43:11Speaker 1: shockingly sad, and I think I think a lot of
- 43:14Speaker 1: people are are probably I don't even know what to say.
- 43:20Speaker 1: Um there's not just there's nothing to really say. I mean,
- 43:24Speaker 1: go go if you feel and if you feel like it,
- 43:27Speaker 1: go give some money to the family through through that
- 43:31Speaker 1: um go fund me app and help take care of
- 43:35Speaker 1: a two months old man. Yeah, and I think kiss
- 43:38Speaker 1: your wife, husband or child at night and just appreciate
- 43:42Speaker 1: every still day because the thin is guaranteed, and just
- 43:46Speaker 1: be thankful if we have. So that let's wrap up
- 43:51Speaker 1: this part one. Thank you Dan for making some time
- 43:55Speaker 1: for this, and um, let's take a quick break and
- 43:58Speaker 1: we'll move on to part two with Dirk and Zach.
- 44:03Speaker 1: All right, I'm here now with Eric Siegfried and Zach
- 44:06Speaker 1: stand out of Onyx and Uh. First off, guys, thank
- 44:10Speaker 1: you for being here. I appreciate you taking the time. Yeah,
- 44:13Speaker 1: thanks for having it on. Absolutely, thank you. It's uh,
- 44:17Speaker 1: it's always fun to talk to people, at least at
- 44:20Speaker 1: least I get a kick out of talking to people
- 44:22Speaker 1: that come from a different kind of background or a
- 44:24Speaker 1: different perspective on things. You know, we're eventually gonna talk
- 44:26Speaker 1: about white tails here, but your guys white tail experiences,
- 44:30Speaker 1: I'm imagining, I think from what I gather are pretty
- 44:33Speaker 1: different from mine, and those are usually the conversations that, um,
- 44:36Speaker 1: that are most fascinating to me. Probably I I'm kind
- 44:40Speaker 1: of a sucker for the new and the different. So
- 44:43Speaker 1: right out of the gate, I'm excited about that, especially
- 44:45Speaker 1: since you guys are hunting out west, which is where
- 44:48Speaker 1: where my heart usually lies. So that's a long winded
- 44:52Speaker 1: way of saying I'm excited about this. But before we
- 44:54Speaker 1: get into that stuff, I do want to kind of
- 44:57Speaker 1: lay some background here. UM, and Eric, you founded ONYX,
- 45:03Speaker 1: which is a tool I've been using for many years now.
- 45:07Speaker 1: It's unbelievably helpful. Um So, I figure I should probably
- 45:10Speaker 1: kick this off by saying thank you, thank you for
- 45:12Speaker 1: helping me out in a lot of ways. And secondly,
- 45:15Speaker 1: how how did this all come together? I got to
- 45:17Speaker 1: hear the story of how this product came to be,
- 45:20Speaker 1: how it ended up on my phone and opened so
- 45:22Speaker 1: often to the dismay of my wife. And maybe a
- 45:25Speaker 1: little bit of background on on you personal as a
- 45:27Speaker 1: hunter and stuff would be interesting too. Okay, Yeah, so
- 45:34Speaker 1: I guess I can give a little background company history.
- 45:37Speaker 1: Um So. I started the company in two thousand nine.
- 45:41Speaker 1: That's when we launched our first products for the garment
- 45:44Speaker 1: GPS unit. It was a micros D card that had
- 45:47Speaker 1: a statewide land ownership map and topo map. You just
- 45:50Speaker 1: plug right into your garment GPS unit and you could
- 45:53Speaker 1: see those property boundaries where you were while you're in
- 45:56Speaker 1: the field. So that was the original product we sold
- 46:00Speaker 1: after we still sell that product, um and we sold
- 46:03Speaker 1: that a lot for the first three years. Then in
- 46:07Speaker 1: we came out with the app that basically turned your
- 46:11Speaker 1: smartphone into a GPS So that was and since then
- 46:15Speaker 1: most people are probably more familiar these days with our
- 46:18Speaker 1: smartphone app called on x hunt UM downloaded in the
- 46:21Speaker 1: app store. But yeah, that's kind of the overall picture
- 46:26Speaker 1: of the company really quickly. UM. I actually a little
- 46:30Speaker 1: bit of history about me. I I grew up in
- 46:33Speaker 1: eastern Montana, UM mainly hunting elk, well, mainly hunting mule
- 46:38Speaker 1: deer an antelope when I started. Then I started moving west.
- 46:41Speaker 1: I went to school in Bozeman and started doing some
- 46:44Speaker 1: artreal hunting UM and my my family actually owned ranch,
- 46:48Speaker 1: a ranch on the river bottom, so I did a
- 46:50Speaker 1: little bit of white to hunting. My dad got me
- 46:52Speaker 1: my first bow when I was sixteen, and I did
- 46:57Speaker 1: a little bit of white toil hunting with that right way.
- 47:00Speaker 1: But I have done some rifle hunting for white tails,
- 47:05Speaker 1: but other than that. Now now living in western Montana Missoula,
- 47:08Speaker 1: where the company is, I do some mountain white til hunting.
- 47:12Speaker 1: Other than that. Yeah, I've been hearing a lot of
- 47:15Speaker 1: good things about that section of the state. I've I've
- 47:17Speaker 1: always hunt on the east side of the state, but
- 47:19Speaker 1: I'm increasingly intrigued by what's going up there a little
- 47:22Speaker 1: bit more to the west and north. So I'm not
- 47:24Speaker 1: to not to pick your brain a little bit about that.
- 47:26Speaker 1: But um, but going back to the company a little bit,
- 47:30Speaker 1: I mean where the idea come from. Was this something
- 47:33Speaker 1: that you always wanted to just get better maps of
- 47:36Speaker 1: album on your GPS or was this I'm just kind
- 47:39Speaker 1: of curious about how you know, how this went from
- 47:42Speaker 1: some concept that you had or someone had to being
- 47:46Speaker 1: a reality. Yeah. Yeah, kind of an interesting story. Basically
- 47:53Speaker 1: moving to Bozeman, Montana for going going to school, Um,
- 47:58Speaker 1: I had an experience. I had to try to find
- 48:02Speaker 1: places where I could go out cutting and I did
- 48:06Speaker 1: that with for Service maps, b LM maps or whatever.
- 48:08Speaker 1: Then I had to move to Missoula and basically landing
- 48:11Speaker 1: a whole new area where I had to figure out
- 48:12Speaker 1: where I could go. So I was using for service maps,
- 48:16Speaker 1: using BLM maps, and I was like, gosh, this is hard,
- 48:19Speaker 1: hard to actually figure out exactly where you're at relative
- 48:22Speaker 1: to property bounties in the field. So that was about
- 48:25Speaker 1: two thousand seven when I was having those experiences and
- 48:29Speaker 1: just like doing that, having that personal need, I ended
- 48:33Speaker 1: up coming up with the idea like just basically, I
- 48:36Speaker 1: need this in the field with me, So how can
- 48:38Speaker 1: I have this on my GPS when I'm in the field.
- 48:40Speaker 1: I was using a total map on my garment GPUSS
- 48:43Speaker 1: didn't have the public and private landownership. So came up
- 48:47Speaker 1: with the idea, Hey, I need this public land when
- 48:49Speaker 1: I'm in the field, how can I get this on
- 48:51Speaker 1: my garment GPS unit? And I figured it out and
- 48:54Speaker 1: that's how kind of the product came about, which just
- 48:56Speaker 1: those personal experiences I had needing to find property boundaries. Yeah,
- 49:02Speaker 1: I think you're probably making it sound easier than it was.
- 49:04Speaker 1: I'm sure. Being a small time entrepreneur myself at times,
- 49:07Speaker 1: I know that putting something out there for the world
- 49:10Speaker 1: is no easy tasks. So I'm glad that it's that
- 49:13Speaker 1: it was something you could do because we're certainly reaping
- 49:16Speaker 1: we're reaping the benefits of it now. Um and Zach,
- 49:19Speaker 1: I guess you're kind of reaping the benefits of it too.
- 49:21Speaker 1: Working for onyx, UM, can you give us a little
- 49:24Speaker 1: low down on on what it is you're doing there
- 49:26Speaker 1: and a little bit of your story too. Yeah, Yeah,
- 49:29Speaker 1: so absolutely. I work on the marketing team and so
- 49:32Speaker 1: I kind of oversee the projects that we're working on
- 49:34Speaker 1: in just the different communications and then get to work
- 49:37Speaker 1: with the partners as well, so pretty much the team
- 49:40Speaker 1: gets to make me look good and make my job easy.
- 49:42Speaker 1: But it I've been here for a little over three
- 49:46Speaker 1: years now, and I actually graduated college. I'd use the chip, especially,
- 49:51Speaker 1: you know Eric growing up in Montana. It was one
- 49:53Speaker 1: of those things on support Montana and it did. I
- 49:56Speaker 1: mean it, it solved the problem. We uh parents are
- 50:00Speaker 1: from eastern Montana, so we do a lot of hunting
- 50:02Speaker 1: out there where you're navigating boundaries and you know, you
- 50:04Speaker 1: always hear the term checkerboard, and so before we were
- 50:08Speaker 1: always uncertain where we were, and then once we got
- 50:10Speaker 1: the chip, it changed all that. And so I knew
- 50:14Speaker 1: in college I wanted to do something in the hunting industry,
- 50:17Speaker 1: and on X was always one that was on my
- 50:19Speaker 1: radar because they were located right in my backyard. I
- 50:22Speaker 1: graduated from the University of Montana here in Missoula, and
- 50:25Speaker 1: they actually had an internship um that I started the
- 50:29Speaker 1: day after I graduated. And then that was over three
- 50:33Speaker 1: years ago and they haven't been able to get rid
- 50:35Speaker 1: of me since. Nice. It sounds like not a bad
- 50:39Speaker 1: not a bad thing to be to be doing. It
- 50:41Speaker 1: looks like you're somehow you figured out a job that
- 50:44Speaker 1: allows you to do a lot of fun stuff too.
- 50:45Speaker 1: Because I saw you were on that that mule there
- 50:49Speaker 1: hunt with Steve in the whole Anyone's Hunt episodes, right,
- 50:53Speaker 1: that was was that New Mexico for Arizona. That was Arizona.
- 50:58Speaker 1: So that one was Arizona in December, and that was
- 51:00Speaker 1: a good time. We uh, you know, just over the
- 51:02Speaker 1: counter archery opportunity that I had never done. I've wanted
- 51:05Speaker 1: to hunt Arizona. And we just went down and stayed out,
- 51:09Speaker 1: slept under the stars for nine days and went hunted
- 51:12Speaker 1: the old here with our bow, and we weren't successful,
- 51:15Speaker 1: but we had plenty of opportunities. I ended up coming
- 51:18Speaker 1: to full draw on the book at forty six yards
- 51:20Speaker 1: and got busted just trying to step out beyond the shrub.
- 51:23Speaker 1: But it was a good time. You know. At the
- 51:25Speaker 1: first couple of days, we're really just trying to get
- 51:27Speaker 1: a lay of the land, kind of learned, you know,
- 51:30Speaker 1: these dear movements. But the last couple of days we
- 51:33Speaker 1: kind of got a dial and ended up finding some
- 51:35Speaker 1: books and had a ton of stocks that we got
- 51:37Speaker 1: close but just not quite enough to capitalize. That's hunting
- 51:41Speaker 1: I haven't got to watch all the full videos yet,
- 51:44Speaker 1: but I've really been enjoying like the behind the scenes
- 51:46Speaker 1: stuff on Instagram stories and uh and and falling along
- 51:50Speaker 1: with what you guys are doing here recently. So I man,
- 51:52Speaker 1: it's funny though it looks as as I was watching that,
- 51:55Speaker 1: I was thinking to myself, Man, I gotta get out
- 51:58Speaker 1: there and chase some some mule deer. I just went
- 52:00Speaker 1: on my first cous deer hunt a couple of weeks
- 52:02Speaker 1: ago and got kind of the taste for that mountain
- 52:04Speaker 1: hunting for deer um, and so Montana's spotting go to
- 52:09Speaker 1: a lot. I'd love to do a mule deer hunt there,
- 52:11Speaker 1: but I don't think I ever could convince myself to
- 52:14Speaker 1: do it, because you can only get one deer tag
- 52:17Speaker 1: in Montana, either mule deer or white tailed deer. And
- 52:20Speaker 1: I don't think I can possibly say no to the
- 52:22Speaker 1: white tail hunting out there, um, because man, I've gotten
- 52:27Speaker 1: so so much enjoyment out of chasing these western white tails.
- 52:32Speaker 1: But I'm doing it from a non resident perspective, you know.
- 52:34Speaker 1: So I'm from Michigan. I'm used to how we have
- 52:37Speaker 1: it here and going out to Montana it's just so
- 52:39Speaker 1: different as far as the landscape, as far as the
- 52:41Speaker 1: number of deer you see, the number of bucks, the
- 52:43Speaker 1: number of quality bucks. It's kind of like a white
- 52:46Speaker 1: tailed dream land for me out there. Um, but I
- 52:50Speaker 1: always hear from locals that just I don't know. I
- 52:53Speaker 1: don't know if people appreciate as much as I do.
- 52:56Speaker 1: I'm kind of curious what you guys think or feel
- 52:58Speaker 1: about the white tail situation out there, Like, how do
- 53:00Speaker 1: you look at and think about Western white tails? Yeah,
- 53:04Speaker 1: I mean, I think one of the things that's tough
- 53:06Speaker 1: just growing up is Montana has so much opportunity. You
- 53:09Speaker 1: know our tag if you buy a deer tag, a
- 53:12Speaker 1: large portion of the state is a general unit and
- 53:15Speaker 1: there's a couple of areas that will be a permit
- 53:16Speaker 1: for meal there. But for the most part, you can
- 53:18Speaker 1: shoot either in a ton of different districts and you
- 53:22Speaker 1: can hunt them from September during archer season all the
- 53:25Speaker 1: way about til you know, early October, and then you
- 53:29Speaker 1: can do the rightful season from October ish through the
- 53:33Speaker 1: end of November through Thanksgiving weekends. So you have one tag,
- 53:36Speaker 1: you get so much opportunity. And what's kind of cool
- 53:39Speaker 1: with the landscape of Montana's you can be hunting mountains
- 53:42Speaker 1: that can hold white tail hand meal there or you
- 53:44Speaker 1: can be you know, in eastern Montana in these bad
- 53:46Speaker 1: lands and river bottoms that hold them both. So it's
- 53:49Speaker 1: such an opportunity thing, And I think there are folks
- 53:52Speaker 1: that lean one way or another, but for me personally,
- 53:56Speaker 1: it's one of those things that there are some similarities
- 53:59Speaker 1: between how we're hunting them, especially during rifle season, and
- 54:03Speaker 1: you know, just being able to you know, shoot either
- 54:07Speaker 1: if if you see it. You know, you could go
- 54:09Speaker 1: out there intending to have a spots off mule deer hunt,
- 54:11Speaker 1: but then all of a a sudden in some egland or
- 54:13Speaker 1: river bottom you see a nice white tail and all
- 54:16Speaker 1: of a sudden, the hunt changes quickly. Yeah, I bet
- 54:18Speaker 1: that that does make a pretty exciting knowing that the
- 54:20Speaker 1: options there. If you had to guess, Zach or Eric,
- 54:25Speaker 1: what do you think the split is like? If you
- 54:27Speaker 1: had to just based off kind of your your friends
- 54:29Speaker 1: and people you're around, if they're gonna say, like white
- 54:32Speaker 1: tail guys versus mule deer guys, if they had to pick,
- 54:35Speaker 1: what do you think it is like? Muliar people? Thirty
- 54:38Speaker 1: percent white tailor what's that skew? Or are you guys
- 54:42Speaker 1: of all Montanon's you're thinking, yeah, that's tough. I would
- 54:50Speaker 1: say I would say probably more white tails are harvested,
- 54:55Speaker 1: just because there tend to be more white tails in
- 54:57Speaker 1: the western United States or sorry, excuse me, in in the
- 55:00Speaker 1: western Montana and there's that's where you kind of run
- 55:03Speaker 1: in some permantent areas for meal there. But I think
- 55:06Speaker 1: people kind of want to hunt meal there, so I'd
- 55:09Speaker 1: say they would say meal there. But I know, like
- 55:12Speaker 1: around Missoula, for instance, we have not a lot of
- 55:15Speaker 1: general over the counter opportunities from meal there. So there's
- 55:19Speaker 1: quite a few more white tail being shot here and
- 55:21Speaker 1: up in northwest Montana. But if you go to eastern Montana,
- 55:24Speaker 1: there's definitely plenty of white tails out there, but it
- 55:26Speaker 1: seems like folks are focusing on meal deer. Yeah. I
- 55:30Speaker 1: guess in the circles I hang out with would be
- 55:32Speaker 1: I think you're eighty percent mule there's white til yeah,
- 55:36Speaker 1: but maybe if you look across the whole state, it
- 55:38Speaker 1: might be more like, yeah, sixty percent mule there and
- 55:43Speaker 1: thirty tinking, like I don't know natal the majority. Yeah, Now,
- 55:46Speaker 1: would you say though that if you looked at the
- 55:48Speaker 1: population of deer, it might be more a little bit
- 55:51Speaker 1: the opposite direction. Is it safe to say there's probably
- 55:53Speaker 1: a lot more white tailed deer the meal there in
- 55:55Speaker 1: the state. Is that accurate? That one's tough putting us
- 55:59Speaker 1: on plot on that one. I mean, I don't know
- 56:03Speaker 1: on that one. I think I think there's plenty opportunity
- 56:07Speaker 1: for both. But I think depending on where you're at
- 56:09Speaker 1: in the region of the state, you can see more
- 56:13Speaker 1: you know, white tails in west western Montana and then
- 56:16Speaker 1: mill there. When you get to the east there there's
- 56:18Speaker 1: a ton of meal there. And frankl I mean there's
- 56:20Speaker 1: a ton of white tails when you get around river
- 56:22Speaker 1: Bottom and egg Land. Yeah, yeah, actually interesting dynamic. And
- 56:28Speaker 1: in Montana you've got egg egg egg bottoms and river
- 56:32Speaker 1: bottoms and creek bottoms in eastern Montana and other places
- 56:35Speaker 1: where you got white tails hanging out. But then you
- 56:36Speaker 1: get into western Montana the mountains, and you've got actually
- 56:39Speaker 1: white tails that have been moving up into the mountains,
- 56:42Speaker 1: so you actually have just white tail mountain hunting. And
- 56:44Speaker 1: then you also have the typical like river bottom white
- 56:48Speaker 1: tail hunting and going out in eastern Montana and other
- 56:50Speaker 1: places in western Montana. Yeah, yeah, that's that's got me
- 56:54Speaker 1: really intrigued to have been talking about for a while
- 56:56Speaker 1: wanting to try to chase some of these these deer
- 56:58Speaker 1: up in the mountains because I've done the river by
- 57:00Speaker 1: the thing. But um but it definitely does seem like
- 57:03Speaker 1: two years this point, the interest exkews probably towards mule there,
- 57:08Speaker 1: not just in Montana, but probably a lot of these
- 57:09Speaker 1: western states. Um but I know some guys are a
- 57:12Speaker 1: little like worried about the spread of white tails. Like
- 57:15Speaker 1: white tails are just so adaptable. They seem to be
- 57:19Speaker 1: increasing their populations in a lot of areas. I know,
- 57:21Speaker 1: like if you look at the longer view over the
- 57:23Speaker 1: last couple of decades, it sounds like it's definitely been
- 57:26Speaker 1: something that's been growing as far as the white tail
- 57:29Speaker 1: prevalence versus mule dear prevalence in certain places and in
- 57:32Speaker 1: some places even maybe white tails pushing Mulei's off a
- 57:36Speaker 1: little bit. Um. So, I've got a couple of buddies
- 57:38Speaker 1: who are always kind of dogging me about like in
- 57:40Speaker 1: the white tails so much, like, yeah, keep them keeping
- 57:42Speaker 1: by you, we don't want them. Um. Yeah, But I'm
- 57:46Speaker 1: a sucker. I'm a sucker for these deer. Um. I've
- 57:50Speaker 1: only ever been out there though, hunting um early season,
- 57:53Speaker 1: so I've always done the early September archery deal for
- 57:56Speaker 1: white tails out there. Um. Does that seem to be
- 58:00Speaker 1: at least from my perspective, it seems like there's not
- 58:03Speaker 1: a whole lot of attention being paid to them at
- 58:05Speaker 1: that point. From all the places I've hunted, I've ran
- 58:07Speaker 1: into very few people chasing white tails that time of year.
- 58:11Speaker 1: When does the white tail bug hit most people around?
- 58:15Speaker 1: You guess is that more of a later in the
- 58:16Speaker 1: year kind of thing, a gun thing, or am I
- 58:18Speaker 1: just kind of experiencing a unique situation? Now, I definitely agree.
- 58:22Speaker 1: I think it's more. You know, Montana, we get the
- 58:25Speaker 1: opportunity to hunt here during the ruts, so I would
- 58:27Speaker 1: say that's when white tail hunting picks up. Um. There's
- 58:31Speaker 1: always folks that will go out and hunt early season
- 58:33Speaker 1: and archery, and then in rifle, you know they'll they'll
- 58:36Speaker 1: be out more spot in stock once that October rolls around.
- 58:40Speaker 1: But for the most part, you know, when you have
- 58:42Speaker 1: the opportunity hunt him in the rut, it seems like
- 58:44Speaker 1: that's when most people are getting the white tail bug.
- 58:48Speaker 1: That's the one thing I've kind of missed out on.
- 58:50Speaker 1: I love like that early September time period because it's
- 58:53Speaker 1: it's something I can't hunt at that time of year
- 58:55Speaker 1: back home, and love getting to see that bed defeat
- 58:58Speaker 1: patterns so much just visible activity. But I have always
- 59:01Speaker 1: been really I just wondering what the rut is like
- 59:05Speaker 1: in these Western states? Is it? Is it pretty wild?
- 59:09Speaker 1: Is white tail writing action pretty awesome? Mob? I guess yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 59:13Speaker 1: I mean I last year hunted western and eastern Montana
- 59:18Speaker 1: and being able to see how the similarities but also
- 59:21Speaker 1: just the differences between them. We have an opportunity for
- 59:24Speaker 1: like a it's a river bottom art, it's an extra
- 59:27Speaker 1: buck tag we have shooted with a bow and it's
- 59:30Speaker 1: in the river bottom, and so like that one, I
- 59:32Speaker 1: don't even really you can hunt that from archery season,
- 59:35Speaker 1: so September one all the way through January, and I
- 59:38Speaker 1: don't really focus on that one until that kind of
- 59:41Speaker 1: mid November because I'm looking for them to rut, looking
- 59:44Speaker 1: for bucks to be moving, um. And then you know,
- 59:47Speaker 1: when I'm hunting eastern Montana with a rifle, that's generally
- 59:50Speaker 1: you know, spot and stock, you're trying to find deer,
- 59:53Speaker 1: and so locating does. And you know, it's cool because
- 59:58Speaker 1: during the rut you have bluck s crewising. So you
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: can look at a group of doughs one day and
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: then the next day, all of a sudden, there's a
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: buck there that hasn't been and so it is one
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: of those things that once the rut starts coming, it's
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: great because you just have so many opportunities to find bucks. Yeah,
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: So one of the things I've always noticed when going
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: out there that's unique compared to some of the other
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: states have hunted is just the the very very high
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: number of bucks compared to doves. Like you've got on
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: an average hunt for me back here in Michigan, and
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: you might see fifteen doughs in one buck. But I've
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: never been out to any of my hunts in the
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: Western States for white tails and seeing you know, it's
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: almost always even if I had average it out, I
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: might see ten bucks, ten dos, or five bucks five dolls,
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: Like it seems, at least from my experience, I'm seeing
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: that often. Is that is that something you guys see
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: often too? And then if so, I've always imagined that
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: makes for like a lot of intense competition, a lot
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: of fighting, a lot of chasing during the rut because
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: of that. Do you see that? Yeah, I mean I
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: think definitely. You know, the buck to door ratio is
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: pretty good, especially for white tails. Um. You know, as
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: you were saying earlier, it seems like white tails are
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: a little more resilient than meals here. But I do think,
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: you know, there's there's especially once the rifle season comes.
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: You always hear about like the orange army. Um, there
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: is a lot of competition for these deer. But luckily
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: the white tail population in Montana's doing pretty well across
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: the state. Um, so you do have you know, you
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: do have a pretty good buck to door ratio. It
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: can vary, but I mean, I the white tail I
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: shot this year during the rifle season, I think that
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: day I saw six bucks and we ended up seeing
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: like maybe ten to twelve dolls, so it was two
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: to one dough but still very good, you know, Um,
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: especially when you're going out looking to be able to
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: look through six bucks in the morning is not bad.
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: You know. I haven't noticed anyone to one ratios. It's
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: more like four does to one buck? What I usually
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: see if I had to guess, Yeah, so what about
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: fighting and stuff? Is there a lot of duking it out?
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: Given that just in general, there's a pretty good number
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: of bucks. And again I've I don't know if this
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: is unique, but I've even hunting public land a pretty
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: good spread of age class too. I Mean, it's not
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: like it's all year and a half old for keys
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: like I see in Michigan. Sometimes I see, you know,
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: a couple of year and a half olds, a couple
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: two and a half year olds, a couple of threes, fours.
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: You know there's older deer. Um. Is there some serious
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: competition for those ladies? Have you seen a knockdown brawls? Yeah,
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: I mean I've I've only had the benefits or the
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: opportunity to see white tail box flight once. But the
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: one thing I do know is during the especially like
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: this river Bottom tag I was talking about earlier, Really,
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: what I like to do is I like to set
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: up a decoy in rattle and I've had pretty good
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: success doing that. Um, generally you'll get those younger bucks
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: coming in there. But even this year during rifle season,
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: we were up in the hills and we found a
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: good drainage that was off of private land on public
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: So I was kind of hunting that boundary there and
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: finding you know, where these bucks would be moving up
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: into the hills. And I was able to rattle in
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: that drainage, and we had different bucks coming to check
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: us out and come, you know, to see what's going on.
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: And so if you have ten does running around their
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: six bucks and they're all kind of curious and moving throughout,
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: we ended up rattling one in pretty close. There was
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: a young buck. Um. But I do think you know,
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: that is one thing that it seems like during the rut,
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: especially when you get to that like mid November, Um,
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: there is a ton of opportunity to rattle deer in.
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: They seem to be pretty aggressive at that point and
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: always want to at least come check it out. Yeah,
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: you have wonder about that too. What what was the
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: kind of rattling sequence or strategy you're using, How like
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: you're doing it just once a day or every half hour.
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: I'd love some details on what you found to work
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: out there. Yeah, for sure. So archery, what I'm doing
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: is kind of a river bottom thing. Generally, it's like
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: state sections, so they're pretty small um, And I know
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: these deer kind of in the egg fields on the
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: private or they're going and bedding up over there where
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: there's less pressure. So generally what I'm doing is I'm
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: actually on the ground. I enjoy doing it. They're just
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: because I can be a little more mobile, and so
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: I'll set up and rattle the perimeters of those and
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: I'll generally set up for you know, do a couple
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: of sequences, um within a half hour, and then sit
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: and wait for a little while, see what's going on.
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: And then if nothing's going for forty five minutes or so,
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: I'll pick up and move and I'll kind of just
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: work the whole perimeter um. And you know, there's some
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: areas that I know dear tend to bed and so
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: I'm kind of trying to figure out where those those
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: are where I think box will be in the general vicinity.
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: But then with rifle, honestly moving country, um, you know,
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: looking for dose because if you you know, during the rut,
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: if you find the dose, you can assume there's a
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: block nearby. But then all so just moving country and
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: glass and trying to find deer and then finding places
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: they think they're gonna bedded up in and then setting
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: up a calling. But I would say when I'm rifle hunting,
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: if I'm gonna rattle, I'm I'm much more mobile less
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: calling there and covering country. Yeah, man, that sounds like
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: a fun way to do it, um when you're doing
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: it with the bow in those river bottoms, when you're
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: setting up on the ground. So you describe that set up,
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: I'm curious, like how you're positioning yourself to have some
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: cover or not. But I mean walk me through, like
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: an example of how you set up on the bow
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: for a rattling kind of sequet. That sounds intense. I'm
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: thinking in my head rattling a buck while on the
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: ground with my bow and hoping to get a shot.
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: I I'm very intrigued. Yeah, yeah, absolutely. And the one
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: thing I want to preface with this is, I haven't
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: you know these are generally since it's a second buck dag,
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: I'm not. I haven't killed a stud doing this, but
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: I've gotten some younger and nice bucks coming in. But
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: usually I have a couple of areas picked out that
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: you know, I've hunted the areas for a couple of
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: years that I know where these deer going to be vetted,
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: and so I'll try to find like a predominant deer
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: trail that I know there's some movement on, and I'll
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: go and set up and I'll put that decoy out
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: anywhere from forty yards depending on what the covers like.
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: And so I'll generally have them so they're facing kind
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: of quarter into me. And so then when I back up,
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: get a good backdrop. I just bring like a little chair,
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: a little portable chair that I can set up and
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: make sure I'm drawn and I'm tucked in. I don't
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: have anything, you know, really covering me so much in front,
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: but I'm just making sure I have a good backdrop
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: and I'm tucked back. And then so theoretically, and what's
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: happened in the past is I will get their attention
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: and they come looking, and then in the clearing where
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: they have some vision, they're able to see that decoy.
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: And what I found is when I have them kind
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: of quarter in two, when they come to you know,
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: confront them and come up, I will have a good Generally,
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: I'm trying to get like a obviously a broadside or
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: even quartering a way shot in that thirty yard range
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: and so I try to get set up so I
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: have good backdrop, make sure the winds in my face
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: before I set up, and then you know, if I
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: think they're gonna be rattling where they're coming from, all
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: set up according to the wind, and then try to
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: find a trail that I think they'll come into and
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: come in to see that decoy and not have any
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: attention on me. Yeah, I really like that. That's that's uh,
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: that sounds a good way to do it. You mentioned
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: the wind a couple of times, playing the wind and everything,
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: and that's something that I've always found when I compare
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: like what we're doing with my typical white tailed guy
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: back in the Midwest or the East or wherever, compared
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: to folks that've hunted without West is lots of times
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: we like obsess about send control, like really go over
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: the top of trying to minimize any human odor, while
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: on the other flip side, I feel like a lot
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: of folks out west are don't even care about at all.
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: They're just gonna play the wind. They don't worry about
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: trying to minimiz sound. They'll wear their camera clothes all
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: day every day doing whatever is that? How do you
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: how do you fall on that? Do you try to
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: do any kind of sent control one specifically chasing white
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: tails in a scenario like that, or or no, I'll clean,
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: you know, I'll make sure to wash them with stuff
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: and not add any additional scent, and I'll leave them
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: to air out outside. But it is I would agree
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: a percent that I think in the West we try
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: to play the wind. We don't worry about to send
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: control stuff as much. I do, know, like with archery,
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: like I try to make sure my stuff hung out.
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: I'm you know, putting it on when I get to
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: the parking spot. But really I'm playing the wind on
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: that one and worrying about that more so than any
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: scent control on my clothing or myself. But most guys are,
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: I mean during November and the run, most guys are
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: out there with a rifle. You can you're out there
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: doing a rattle and you're setting up maybe in a
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: little elevating spot with more visibility to where you can
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: shoot a hundred yards, so you know, you can play
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: your wind when you're rattling and then make sure your
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: wind going to a safe spot. Yeah, and then you're
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: using a right so you don't have to worry about
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: such close quarters. Yep, yep, exactly. Eric. Can you describe
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: in a little more detail your your kind of typical
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: steps on a lot of these songs, because I know
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: you said you're more rifle focused during the rut too.
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: Is it kind of similar to some of the things
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: that Zach was sharing or do you have a different take? Yeah,
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: I guess I have tried a little bit of rattling,
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: but not a lot of what I've done in the
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: past in eastern Montana. Is I've actually like got to
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: an elevated position and just watch where bucks are coming
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: out in the fields. Froom, I'm talking like two miles away.
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: You're on this like elevated hill where you can look
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: at down all the down around all the river bottoms
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: and eggs fields, so all glass evenings and mornings, and
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: see where bucks are going into bed and coming out
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: the fields. And then if I see a buck that
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: UM interested in, I'll actually use terrain to stock down
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: close with a rifle. And maybe I'm two hundred yards away,
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: but I can usually use some sort of terrain to
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: actually stock in on them and get a shot. Or
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: you can go that you know, if you see one
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: come out of it to a field at night. Maybe
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: you just go back in the morning and try to
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: get in a position where your two hundred yards from
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: that field will do the same thing the next evening,
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: where you actually get close to the next evening to
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: where this book is coming out. Yeah, yeah, I think
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: that's one of my favorite things about Western white tail
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: hunting so far has just been the opportunity to do
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: what you just said, which is observed dear from a
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: distance and then be able to move on them. So often,
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: like what I've got going on back here in some
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: of the states that hunt in the Midwest, you you know,
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: you're if you want to see at least mature bucks,
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: you're not very often can see them out in the
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: open where you can actually see him from you know,
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: half a mile or two d yards even lots of
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: times if you're gonna see something, it's got to be
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: at fifty yards or forty yards or those long distance
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: observations are just tough. So so much of your strategy
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: has to come down to looking at sign or trail
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: cameras or close encounter and then making a small adjustment.
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: But when I've gone you know, North Dakota in Montana.
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: I'm sitting, you know, just like you describe. I'll find
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: a high spot and I'll just watch a mile away
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: and then you can learn so much. Not only is
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: that helpful from a hunting perspective, but that's just for
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: me at least, it's a lot of fun just to
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: get to see the deer and then you know, make
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: a move with it with your tree stand or if
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: you've got a gun, you know, sneak in on foot. Um.
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: That is just just the observation, just simply geeking out
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: about watching deer. That is just I don't know, unique
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: to the Western landscape. It seems like you just the
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: views are unbelievable. Yeah, absolutely, And it always makes it easier,
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: you know, like even if the hunting is not great
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: where you're at, if you're able to go out and
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: see deer to neighboring public ground that they might get
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: an opportunity, you might get an opportunity on. It just
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: keeps you motivated throughout the day when you can just
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: go up and get up high and start glassing to
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: see deer because you always have that. You know, you're
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: always waiting for that opportunity and it it just helps
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: you get through those longer days. Oh yeah, agree with
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: that anymore. I like to just use my spotting scope
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: and uh, you know, take pictures of a a certain deer
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: and kind of watch them over the years and just
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: like photograph them and watch what they do. And one
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: of these spots that I have, you can actually just
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: sit on this high rise and you can see multiple
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: different fields. So you you look at this one field
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: for a little bit and see what they're doing. Then
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: you look over here and see what they're doing. So
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: it's like you're saying, it's really neat to watch. Is
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: that something that people do a whole lot around you guys?
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: That being you know, actually paying attention to specific deer
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: and seeing that same dear year after year. I've always
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: kind of I haven't heard that as much from the West,
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: but back here all the time, like we're seeing the
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: same eight porter year after year. Things like that. Um,
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: does that happen a whole bunch of year kind of
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: neck of the woods? Yeah, I think if they have
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: access from private ground. Maybe The one thing I do
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: here is like someone might see a deer during archery
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: season and then try to come back during rifle and
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: locate that dear if it's like a general area or
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: something like that. But I do think the folks that
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: are watching year to year, Um, it's just on public ground,
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: it's tough that you know, they might get pushed off
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: or someone else might get in there. But you know,
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: there's a ton of folks who have a place that
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: they've been hunting every single year and so then they're
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: able to kind of keep tabs on their deer. Yeah.
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: What what kind of opportunity have you guys seen from
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: a public land perspective? Um, generally pretty good quality hunting
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: in the areas you guys have gone as far as
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: white tails or um, you know, I've thought it's been
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: pretty darned good in the places I've gone. But again
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: I'm comparing it to you know, Michigan, where the public
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: land hunting is really really tough. Have you guys seen
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: pretty pretty good success in public land at all or
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: heard about it as far as white tails? Yeah, yeah, No,
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: I think there's a ton of opportunity and it kind
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: of you know, it depends on what type of hunt
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: you want. So I know, like you know, like the
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: Milk Rivers and everyone knows about the Milk River and
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: it's great, and they've had some issues with blue tongue
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: and whatnot the last couple of years, but it sounds
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: like they're rebounding. But like I know, for a fact,
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: of northwest Montana there's some really big bucks, but it's
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: difficult hunting um. But a lot of that is public ground,
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: you know, and it's tough. It's thick country and you're
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: kind of still hunting and walking through. But in eastern Montana,
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: we got a ton of great opportunity where you'll have
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: you know, in this checkerboard, you'll have egg land or
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: something coming off the river bottom, and you might have
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: a couple of sections of states. So the deer might
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: predominantly be on private where they're left alone, but every
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: once in a while, especially like during the rut, you
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: can catch deer coming out onto public ground that you
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: can go access. And so I think there's a ton
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: of opportunity. Another great one we have is we have
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: block management, which is private ground for public access for hunting.
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: And so this will be something where it you know,
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: it's more agriculture. Some of it might be you know,
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: in the hills or what they're leasing out for grazing
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: or whatnot. But that's always a great opportunity to access,
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: and it seems like there's a ton of good white
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: tail opportunity on that as well. Yeah, especially when you
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: can rattle and start pulling, pulling deer off your onto
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: the public or from another ranch onto a block management area. Yeah,
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: it's a good strategy. Have you ever done that mark
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: where you're rattling. No, not in not in the West yet.
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: I've definitely, you know, rattled deer off neighboring properties in
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: Midwestern places I've found, um for sure. But but I
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: feel like you guys are saying, it just seems like
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: it would work so well out by you, just given
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: the kind of structure of the deer herds I've encountered. Um.
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: So even as you're saying all this, I'm sitting here wondering,
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: maybe I finally need to move my September bow hunt
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: and try a rut hunt for once out there, just
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: to see what that would be like, because because it
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: just seems like calling in general, grunting, rattling, all that stuff,
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: I'm just betting it's probably significantly more effective than than here,
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: just because I mean, we've got we've got literally seven
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: thousand eight hundred thousand deer hunters here in Michigan that
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: are all rattling and calling and running around the woods,
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: all in a little section. Um. So just that amount, yeah, exactly,
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: So that just changes things so dramatically. These deer are
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: just on They're just walking a real tight rope. They're
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: very paranoid. Um. So you can't get away with a
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: whole lot. But it definitely seems like the pressure is
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: a little bit different, the herds a little bit different. Um.
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: And not just in Montana. I mean I think this
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: probably applies to Wyoming, in Colorado, the Dakotas. I mean
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: everywhere I've been. Um, there's pockets where it's it seems
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: like pretty unique that are would be a lot of fun.
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: So tie on my list to try that out. Um,
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: but to this access. How many years to come out
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: to the west to hunt? Wait till so I have
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: done it now three years? Three or four years? Um.
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: I've hund in Montana three times, in North Dakota once
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: now I guess, um and killed killed two out of
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: three years, could have killed, could have killed three out
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: of three. Um, But was was trying to get pretty picky.
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: But all public land, all just on my own solo hunting,
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: living on the back of my pickup truck parked on
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: some public and just learning it as I go. UM,
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: And I don't know if I've had a more fun hunt.
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: I mean, I really really have been enjoying it for
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: all the reason we were talking about. I mean, you
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: see a ton of deer, you see a lot of
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: nice deer. I haven't had to deal with a whole
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: bunch of other hunters. It just seems like, at least
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: at that time of the year to our earlier conversation,
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: most folks are focusing on mule deer or elk in September. Um,
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: I seem to be the only one crazy enough to
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: be hunting some public land river bottoms for white tails
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: and uh gosh, I mean I've had an absolute blast
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: and UM, but the the access thing is is a
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: tricky deal. And we're kind of talking about you mentioned
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: Black Manage. It was all these different programs that this
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: whole thing is. Where I've been using Onyx probably the
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: most myself is just figuring out where are these little
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: pockets of state land, where these little pockets of b LM,
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: Where are these pieces that you can get to? Um,
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: sometimes it's a roundabout way, like I found a spot
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: this past year where what I was always looking on
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: for public land white tails on the east side was
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: river bottom country that was kind of hard to get
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: to though, and close to agg Field on private land.
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: So I would just scour all the maps all over
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: the state where I could hunt and look for these
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: little pieces of public that would intersect some portion of
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: the river bottom stuff where you would have those crops nearby.
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: And I found one spot that was a little forty
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: acre piece that buttoned up right into that river bottom.
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: There was a big private land ranch on one side
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: of that had a bunch of what looked like probably
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: alfalfa field, some kind of greenfield um. But you had
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: to walk across a really big piece of state land
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: to get to this little piece of blm that was
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: on the her It was more than a more than
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: a mile, might have been closer two miles if I remember,
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: from the road, and you start up high, real high
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: up on this big bluff and then you had to
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: go down like some steep canyons to get to the
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: river bottom. It just didn't seem like something you know,
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: the average guy or girl would want to do on
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: a whim, and so okay, I go on, go eyeball,
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: test it. See if it's actually as gnarly as I
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: think it is from the map, See if I can
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: even do it. I didn't even know if you could
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: physically get down it and get back up it, especially
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: carrying your bow, carrying a tree stand and sticks in
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: my backpack and all the things I needed to pull
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: off the hunt. Um. But I snuck out there first
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: just to scout it earlier in the day, like midday.
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: Found a way to navigate down this little I don't
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: even know you like a box canyon or something, just
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: a really narrow little cut off this bluff. I had
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: to slide down on my butt on parts of it.
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: I brought like a hiking stick to get back out
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: on the way to get back out in the evening,
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: and it just ended up being a honeyhole that I
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: don't think many people either knew was there or knew
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: that they could get to it. Um. But once you
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: got there, it was basically like private land. I don't
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: think anyone else wanted to get in there. Anyone else
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: wanted to walk that far. And you had all these
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: deer bedded on the public land and these like brushy,
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: nasty thickets and cottonwood groves all moving out to that
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: private land of feed and I was seeing I don't know,
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: deer come piling out. Um. That was it was a
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: cool discovery. And I found a handful of spots now
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: like that where Um it's it's some really high quality hunting.
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: As far as I'm concerned, you're not seeing you know,
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: it's not like you're seeing a buck like you might
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: hope to see in Iowa. You know, guys maybe want
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: to see these monstrous bucks in Iowa. I'm not necessarily
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: seeing deer like that on my Western white talents. But
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: I'm seeing a lot of nice bucks. Um. I means
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: that kind of what you guys would say, like nice quality.
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: You know, maturish bucks seem to be definitely available in
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: a lot of spots like where you're at, but maybe
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: not a hundred eight pound buck like you might see
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: an aisle. Yeah, yeah, definitely. I mean, I think there's
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: opportunities to get into that one eighties. Every once in
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: a while you hear about them in certain regions throughout
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: the state, but for the most part, it's you know,
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: you'll find a good mature buck it doesn't seem like
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: we get the body side that you know, you do
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: you see in the Midwest. But as far as antlers, like,
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: generally you can find a good four or five nice mature,
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: you know, four to five year old deer fairly frequently
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: if you're you know, especially if you're going to the
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: extent that you do there and finding these areas that
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: no one else wants to go to, it definitely seems
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: definitely seems possible. And for most how I was gonna say,
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: how when you first, like before you came out to
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: Montana and North Dakota, how did you even pick a region? Like?
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: How did you find an area just to get started?
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: You know, throw a guarded app or did you have
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: kind of an idea of the terrain you wanted to hunt?
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: So I knew kind of the terrain that I thought
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: white tails will be found, and I kind of knew
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: that sounded like river bottoms were the way to go.
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: So I just started looking in a couple of regions
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: where I was playing spending some time already for just
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: I was out there for some vacations with the family,
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: and started saying, Okay, where's river bottoms that look like
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: they might have white tails, and then tried to look
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: at them at the public land border maps and see
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: where public land intersected with river bottom, and I went.
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: I looked at a number of different valleys and number
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: of different river bottoms and just tried to see which
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: one seemed to have a couple of decent public land options.
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: And then when I would go out for vacation one
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: year I was out there in the summer, I was
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: able to actually drive around and check these these spots out.
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: So I went to one valley and just drove the
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: roads in the evenings in July in early August and
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: just tried to find and see if these public land
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: spots that were adjacent to private land um egg fields,
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: see if there's actually a bunch of deer out there.
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: And I went to one area, one valley, and just
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: was not seeing the number of deer. I seeing deer,
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: but wasn't seeing like the quality dearly the older bucks
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: that I would be interested in hunting, didn't see him
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: in a kind of consistent basis on or near public land.
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: Went to another valley, another river, about forty five minutes
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: an hour away, and then all of a sudden, like whoa,
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: all sorts of nice deer, lots of deer, lots of
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: older bucks, um, and some coming right off of public
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: onto great big private fields right there that you could
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: hunt right in the edge of. So that was the
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: first body hunted. And then I kind of just took
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: little rumors of what I heard, like this river is
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: supposed to be good, this river is supposed to be good,
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: and I picked one of them, did the same process,
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: looked for these public pieces that might intersect river, and
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: then took just on a way the most recent place
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: I've hunted, I never had seen it before at all
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: until I showed up to hunted UM. So I just
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: had a bunch of public parcels picked out on ONYX,
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: showed up there on day one and started driving the
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: roads around. They're just looking at with the binocular, scoping
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: it out, and um did a little bit of walking
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: and just very quickly narrowed down, Okay, at these ten
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: chunks I thought might be good, it kind of looks
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: like one or two of them actually might be half decent.
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: And uh So the first year hunting that general area,
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: I didn't kill one. That was last year. But I
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: kind of figured some stuff out and I could have
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: definitely could have killed some some bucks. Um. And then
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: this year I went back to the same area, narrowed
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: down to two spots that I thought would be the best,
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: and it it became you know, pick your pick your buck.
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: There was just a whole lot of opportunity then. So
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: now I'm at the point though, where I feel like
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: I've got that area so figured out. Now I'm kind
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: of I'm probably looking at gift Horse in the Mouth,
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: but I'm thinking about trying to go find a brand
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: new spot just because like that process of figuring out
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: the new area is getting to be so much fun.
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: I almost want to be just see what the next
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: new spot is and can I figure it out? Because
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: this spot almost knock on wood And I'm gonna say this,
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: and if I go back, it is probably gonna be
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: either literal with other hunters there's no deer left or something.
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: But it almost feels like it's too easy now that
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: I figured this spot out, So I might be looking
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: for the next adventure. I don't know. Yeah, no, I agree.
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: I think it makes it fun. You know, it's kind
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: of like opening Day. You just don't know what the
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: opportunities are going to be, so it's it's exciting when
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: you're checking out a new country. Oh yeah, there really
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: is um to to this kind of whole. Um kind
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: of describe my own story how I'm camped out on
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: these public land spots. What's one of the coolest things
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: I found about these kind of hunts at least as
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: like a non nonresident coming in to do a deal
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: like this, you can combine really great deer hunting with
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: also like a fun camping trip. Kind of that whole
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: experience is something that's a little more common out there
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: by you guys, especially with all the public land, national
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: forest or BLM or whatever where you can just pull
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: off the side of the road instead of a base
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: camp right there. Um, I feel like there's a whole
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: lot of neat things going on as far as like
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: these great hunting base camps, wall tent setups and all
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: these things are like what you had down on that
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: Arizona hunt, Zach with your guys camp set up. Do
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: you have any recommendations as far as I don't know
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: the gear that works really well for setting up a
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: good base camp for a hunt like this, Um, any
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: things you've learned over the years as far as properly
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: packing for properly setting it up, the best way to interior,
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: decorate your wall tent or anything like that. Yeah, no, absolutely,
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: So I mean looking from like eastern Montana, when I
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: have traveled across state, we generally will do either like
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: tense if it's earlier in the year, but if it's
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: in that November time, we bring a wall tent. And
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: so what's great is you can travel and we have
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: a couple of areas that we'll plan on staying, but
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: a lot of times we're gonna go just find a
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: peace public ground and we're pulling off the road a
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: little bit and we'll put up just a you know,
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: twelve by twelve wall tent for three to four of
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: us and have a stove to make sure we're staying warm,
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: and we might get you know, we're not just camping
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: right where we're hunting. We might get in the car
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: and travel twenty miles or whatever. But it gives us
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: a good base camp. And so I think the biggest
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: thing is, like, especially in later in the year in November,
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: it can be cold and it gets dark early, so
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: doing stuff that keeps you sane during the night. So
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: we'll have you know, we'll have a portion of the
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: tent that's closed off for cooking and stuff like that,
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: and then generally we're getting back at you know, five
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: to six after dark and then making dinner and playing
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: some games, have you know, lantern in the tent, have
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: the fire going and we're playing card games or whatever,
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: and then you're going to bed pretty early. But that
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: is the one thing is making sure you're comfortable. Um,
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: especially on you know, these extended hunts. The last thing
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: you want to do is make this investment to come
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: out to do a fourd to five day hunt, and
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: then you start getting tired and losing focus on day
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: two because you're uncomfortable at night and you're cold, you know,
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: trying to sleep in just a sleeping bag and maybe
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: a backpack intent And there's many people that do it
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: that way, and I think for us, like we've just
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: found like if you're comfortable when you're sleeping, you're able
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: to hunt harder, longer, but earlier in the year when
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: it's nicer. Um things that we've kind of like doing
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: is what you're talking about is just a truck stopper
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: and being able just to have like a you're sleeping
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: pad in there and you can be mobile. It's really
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: nice just being able to uh find a spot, check
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: it out for a couple of days. If you don't
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: like it, load your stuff up quick and get moved
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: into the next one, and then pull your cooler out
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: and pull everything out and just sleep in the back
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: and that gives you a little storm coverage there. Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: definitely come to like that style. That that's you know,
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: like what I've been doing, and that the flexibility of
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: it is so nice. When we're We're doing North Dakota
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: hunt this past year and I've been hunting Montana. I
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: filled my tag. I met up with a friend of
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: mine that was North Dakota not too far away, doing
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: the same thing, and he had been struggling. Wasn't finding
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: the deer we thought we were gonna be finding there.
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: So I as took one night in one morning and
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: just scouted, trying to hit up high spots, kind of
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: doing what we're talking about earlier, getting up on high spots,
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: looking out over long areas and trying to see, you know,
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: are there even the deer we want to hunt here
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: at all? And after an evening in the morning of
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: doing that kind of long distance glass, and I decided,
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: you know what, I just I don't think it's happening
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: right now. If we had another week to really dive in,
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: maybe we could figure out these where these deer are,
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: and maybe they're back in the cover and they're not
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: coming out to feed where we thought they would be.
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: But I made the decision that I think we could
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: probably better use our last two days by just going
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: to a brand new area where it looks like there's
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: a bunch more open egg fields that we could get
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: close to and and glass up some deer. And so
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: it was really easy to say, all right, camps just
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: in the back of the truck, just throw you know,
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: your camp chair in there and go. It wasn't like
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: some huge operation of tearing down a massive camp or
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: hooking up a trailer. And you know that stuff, while
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: really nice, can sometimes make it harder for you to
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: be nimble and um in some situations. That's nice to have,
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: at least in the one I was, and that worked
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: out perfect. But yeah, absolutely, it's always nice when you
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: can be mobile um and it is just so convenient
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: because it's like, you know, you can only bring so
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: much with a truck in the topper so you don't overpack,
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: and you can pull out and make a quick camp
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: and set your chairs up, and then you could tear
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: it down just as fast at the same time, though,
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: you can make it however nice you want it. Really,
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: you could just do a topper, or you can do
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: a full like camper in the back of the truck,
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: that type of camper, I don't know. Yeah, Or you
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: can pull a little trailer. I've got a jumping jack
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: trailer that I use. It's just a canvas tint that
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: pops out. Or you could go full on. You could
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: go hardside and smaller trailer just a little more difficult
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: to turn around in things, but you can just pull
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: off the side of roads, set that thing up, be
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: good to go. Or you could just like you said,
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: be even more mobile and quick by just camping in
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: the fact of your pickup under your topper. How do
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: you like that jumping jack? I've seen those. I've been
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: kind of intrigued by that. I like it a lot. Yeah. Nice,
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: and it's easy to tow, nice and lightweight, easy to
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: turn around, and a little bit higher off the ground
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: so I can still take it through crick crossings and stuff.
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: If you get a little more off road. That's what
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: I like about it. You can pull my camper pretty
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: much anywhere. I don't worry about dragging it through a
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: crick crossing or something. That time, well, we spent some
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: time during fair season. I mean that thing. It was
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: cold and snowy, and that thing came up a mountain
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: road that was pretty bumping. And you know, they just
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: have them set up so they are durable and meant
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: to go. Really the only constraint you have is you know,
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: just backing up and getting around on roads. But otherwise,
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: like those things are pretty solid and easy to pull
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: with you wherever you want to go hunting. Is that
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: is that? Also the one that has a portion of
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: the trailer is like open platform for you to put
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: gear or a four wheeler or something like that, And
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: I thinking the same one. Yeah, that's the one that
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: they all have that set up where it pulls up
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: and then you can put gear on top, or a
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: t V S or your razor or whatever you want. Yeah,
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: that's slick. That's really slick. Um cycle on TV. Yeah,
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: So so back to the um Back to the wall
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: tent though, because this is something as much as I
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: like my very nimble mobile truck camper style. UM, I
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: do think I want to try one of these slightly
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: more relaxing. I don't have more relaxing, slightly more luxurious
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: camping experience, specially if I came out in November when
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: it would be awfully cold. UM. I know zero about
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: wall tents, about the right gear to bring along for
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: a hunt or for a setup like that. UM. Is
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: there any specific things you found, like should you be
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: bringing I see lots of cots. People usually bring cots
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: instead of sleeping on the ground pads. Um do you
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: recommend something like that? Any specific models, any specific camping
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: or cooking gear setups that worked well for you guys
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: and the wall tent set up. Um, I'm I'm really
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: used to minimalist camping. I'm curious to hear if there's
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: anything from the wall tent side that's that's a little different. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely,
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: So like with the wall thing, you know, if it's
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: November and we're gonna be there for four or five days,
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: we can pack a little. We can pack more stuff
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: than if we're planning on just doing like if we
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: have sleep in the back of our pickup or whatever.
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: But with ours, Like it's a pretty simple tent um.
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: I think we got it from Cabella's. You know, it's
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: under a thousand bucks. And then we just got a stove,
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: a wood stove that goes with it. And so what's
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: nice is, you know, the biggest thing is heat when
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: it's when it's that cold and then get down to
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: zero and be windy, being able to come back and
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: dry your boots off and just be warm it is great.
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: But then the other thing is like a cot. I
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: seriously recommend a cot. I think ours are just they're
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: not ultra light or anything. They're just the Cabella's ones.
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: But it, uh, that's just nice because it gets you
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: up off the ground so you're not losing all that
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: heat from the frozen ground. And so the other thing
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: too is storage wise, being able to take your pack
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: or you're rifle or you know, your boots and put
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: them underneath because you got all these cops laid out
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: in the tent. So it helps with storage and then cooking. Really,
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: I mean we pretty good. We take you know, one
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: of those just like you know, there's a hundred different models,
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: you know, I know, it's like a Coleman two burner
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: stove and I know Camscheff as one and there's all
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: sorts of different models and that a pot in one pan,
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: and then we usually are bringing stuff. You know, we'll
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: bring some elk steaks if we have them, some of
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: the just like easy mac macaroni and cheese, stuff like
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: that that we're just cooking. And then the other thing
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: that you can run into in a lot of these
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: areas if you're kind of away from towns is water
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: and bringing enough water. So we'll have like a five
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: gallon jug, plenty of water bottles and stuff like that.
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: You're using it to clean up. You know, you'll heat
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: up water after a couple of days and use that
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: to clean up. But then also just cooking and stuff
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: like that. But generally we'll pull up the back of
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: the pickup so it's right out front of the tent
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: and we cook kind of on there, or we'll have
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: it in the tent if we only have a couple
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: of people, but then everything just gets stored in the
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: pickup that's not in the tent. And then you know,
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: definitely want camp chairs, places to sit so you can
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: play cards at night. But really the biggest thing is
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: just you know, if we're gonna bring a wall tent.
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: We want to be comfortable, so we're going to make
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: sure that we have something to cook with. We're gonna
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: have our cots and probably have a couple of camp
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: chairs to hang out because you know, you got four
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: to five hours of dark to burn each night, so
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: just trying to find something to Yeah, that makes sense.
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: What kind of size do you recommend? I'm guessing maybe
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: like two to four people. Do you get like the
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: smallest possible? I'm curious lots of times, like when you
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: buy two person backpacking tent, really that's gonna be kind
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: of a one person tentant or like you and your wife.
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: But oftentimes like a two person backpacking intent would be
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: really really really tight for two adult men. Is that
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: kind of same deal with wall tents? Like, if you
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: want to get something that's gonna hold four guys, you
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: probably don't want to buy a tent they say for four,
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: because that's still gonna be too cramped. Is that the
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: same kind of deal. Yeah, especially if you're gonna put
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: a stove in it. You know that stove takes up
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: some room and you can't you can only sleep so
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: close to it. It's putting off a lot of heat.
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: So I think you know ours is a twelve by
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: twelve and four the max you would want to fit.
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: And that's with putting stuff under your cots and then
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: also putting stuff in the pickup. UM. But you know
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: they make these wall tents. There's so many different models.
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: They make some that are like ten by twenty just giant,
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: and you have like a cooking quarters and then you
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: have your sleeping stuff. That one's much more comfortable. But
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: if you're looking like anywhere from two to four, you
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: could definitely get away with like a twelve by twelve
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: something around that nature, um, and then just planing it
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: on store and some of your stuff and your pickup outside.
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: But it's it's incredible because now you know, you see
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: a lot of guys with these teepees and stuff like that. Um.
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: I know Eric has one, and you can put a
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: stove in there. And you can get these what they
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: call like eight ten man teath bees. Really you're sleeping
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: like maybe board or four or four in there, but
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: they're just much lighter. You can take the more places.
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: They're pretty quick to set up. UM. So there's a
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: lot of different variations of it. I think kind of
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: a common thing when you're using the late season. It's
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: just having a heat source and being able to put
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: a stove in there. It's really the biggest convenience factor. Yeah,
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: those those tints are funny. Like you talked about the
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: TV tins, they rate them as how many people can
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: they domino in. Here's the regular size of the person.
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: How many people can be domino in this thing? And
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: so it's an eight person tent, but really that's like
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: a three person with all the gear you have. Yeah,
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: comfortably maybe four. So yeah, they always rate them by
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: how many they can like tetricize into the tin. But
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: I don't think the wall tents are like that. They're
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: just more like twelve by twelve or so rated by
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: people they can they Yeah, they generally recommend how many
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: can fit in there. But I've found like with a
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: you know, a ten by ten twall, twelve by twelve
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: three is comfortable. Four you're getting tight, but you can
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: do it. Yeah, So for someone now I'm kind of
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: thinking in my head about right, we're kind of laying
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: out the things to be thinking about if you're gonna
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: come out to do your first Western whitetail hunt in
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: a state like Montana, North Dakota, Wyoming, something like that. Um,
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: we've talked through a lot of stuff when it comes
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: to the tactics that are gonna work. We've talked a
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: little bit aout the camping. Another thing that would be
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: on my mind if I had never been out there before,
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: let's say, in that November time frame for the rut,
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: I'd be a little worried about getting around and like
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: the conditions. Um, if it's you know, I've been out
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: there on some of these roads in the spring when
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: they get super super muddy. Um, is there anything that
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: someone should be thinking about as far as the vehicles
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: they bring, or like worrying about snow and wind? Should
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: you bring studs or something like that or chains as
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: far as that kind of stuff for in November Hunt,
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: do we have to worry about that kind of weather
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: in the Northern Rockies, northern Great Plains or you know
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: my being an over paranoid Michigander. Yeah, depending on where
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: you're going, they're definitely places you can get into pickles
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: when the when the strain or snow start coming down.
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: So yeah, you definitely should be thinking about bringing a
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: high clearance four by four vehicle. I mean, if you're
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: looking anywhere in eastern Montana where you got a gumbo
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: and haven't been to night, type soil that gums up
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: your tires. That can get really nasty. If you get
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: like a one inch wet snow or just one half
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: an inch rain, sometimes you have to be prepared to
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: just like let that dry or let it freeze the
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: next morning. So yeah, brings change. I mean if you're
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: looking at like Ford Pack area, eastern Montana type hunting, Yeah,
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: I have a four wheel drive, have good tires, bring
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: change just to be safe. Yeah, I think the good
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: tires is a huge one. Um, regardless where you're at
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: the state. If you're on these mountain roads up here,
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: there's rocks all over, you know, they're the cliffs I
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: had to break in or whatever. And then in eastern
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: Montana still have rocks even though it's a lot of gumbo.
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: And the last thing you want to do is have
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: to change a tire and then not have a spare.
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: Probably should go back to town and get another, get
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: a patch, or get another one. So having good like
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: you know, ten flat tires that are pretty durable. Um,
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: I've had to use chains a couple of times this year.
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: And then the other thing is a shovel, um, snow, mud,
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: whatever it is. You can get stuck in some areas
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: and have to dig yourself out. So, you know, I
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: think the key things are definitely having a good four
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: by four, make sure you have some good decent clearance
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: if you're gonna be going through some cracks and stuff
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: like that. Good tires, chains never hurt in a shovel
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: or pretty important there. Or if you've scouted there's county
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: roads that are graveled, well, if you can you can
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: always develop your plan around sticking to those and then
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: camping off of those gravel roads, then you can be
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: pretty safe. You don't have to worry so much about
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: gumbo and everything. So there is a way to do
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: it where you can be safe about not having to
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: get stuff and just have to develop your plan around
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: sticking to those gravel county roads more than anything. Yeah,
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: and this is this is really focusing on kind of
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: that later rifle season when the weather can be variable
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: and you got anything from you know, we've had November
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: it's been sixty degrees in raining, or it can be
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: zero and snowing. So mountains or eastern Montana. It's if
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: you're going to be venturing around, it's not a bad
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: idea to be prepared. But like Eric said, you can
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: find these county roads where they'll be maintained and you'll
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: be pretty safe if you stick to those. Yeah, is
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: there anything else now that we're talking about it? Like
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: for a first time Western hunter and I guess you
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: know we're talking about white tail hunters, but maybe even
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: someone who's trying one of the other species. Are there
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: any other big, big, just I don't know what I
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: call it, something that you really want to make sure
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: keep in the back of your mind if you're coming
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: out here, try something like this for the first time. UM.
- 1:41:50Speaker 1: I mean, I know there's a million ways that you
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: go with this, but if there's anything that jumped out
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: to you, like don't forget to bring a shovel. That
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: was a great one, um, any other ones like that
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: you'd want to leave someone with the keep in mind
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: they wanted to give us a shot, So you might
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: bring a gun cleaning kid if you're if you're rifle hunting,
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: just in case the same situation you get muddy and
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: you drop your rifle and you get mud stuck up
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: the barrel or snow. It's always good to have a
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: little yeah yeah snake or something. Yeah. And I think
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: the other thing is like definitely doing the research ahead
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: of time on the areas you're gonna be hunting and
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: making sure you know the rigs. You know, like I
- 1:42:26Speaker 1: said earlier, there are some areas that are permit areas
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: and they can be right next to them. They might
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: be the only one in that region and you run
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: into that with Meal there specifically, but if you're coming
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: out to Montana, you have the opportunity to do both.
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: So I think the biggest thing is just making sure
- 1:42:41Speaker 1: you know all the different hunting districts. And this is
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: talking more Montana specifically, but one thing we've had come
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: up recently that we haven't had to worry about is
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: c w D and so we have some of these
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: areas where they want you to check them in. You
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: have to be careful on how you're transporting this animal
- 1:42:57Speaker 1: and just some different regulations around that, and so that's
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: something we haven't had to worry about. But even you know,
- 1:43:03Speaker 1: as residents were hunting every year, we are now having
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: to educate ourselves and make sure we know you know
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: where we're at exactly based on you know, if we're
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: gonna be traveling through or whatnot. Yeah, so you guys
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: have a new or relatively new layer on ONYX that
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: shows c w D cases. Right, how does how does
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: that work? What exactly does it show on that front?
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: Just so I think that is helpful for people that
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: might be going to a new area need to figure
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: out do they need to worry about that or not? Right? Yeah, yeah, absolutely,
- 1:43:33Speaker 1: So we worked with q d m A on that one,
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: and so they've been collecting those different counties that have
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: the c w D cases and really what the idea
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: on that one is is to highlight that you know,
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: if you want to hunt in that county, you need
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: to do your research and make sure you know what
- 1:43:48Speaker 1: the regulations are. And so it's a nationwide layer, but
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: you can kind of look at them. The one thing
- 1:43:53Speaker 1: with it is like you know, trying to get the data,
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: it's not going to be you know, it's tough to
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: keep it right. You gotta make sure you know on
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: which days you're going based on the year when it's updated.
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: But the biggest thing is if you see it, it'll
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: tell you, you you know, if it's an area of interest
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: or if it's if it's in that county, then it
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: allows you to you know, contact Montana f w P
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: and be able to figure out what the regulations are,
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: what you should be looking for, how you should handle
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: the animal um and things like that. And so it's
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: a good starting place to kind of see if you know,
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: if you're throwing a darted the map and you're going
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: to go hunt this unit, just so you have all
- 1:44:31Speaker 1: the information, you make sure that you can be confident
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: and not have to worry about any of the regulations
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: around that. Yeah. And I think as a response to hunter,
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: if you do you see that there's ever been a
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: c w D case in that county, you should take
- 1:44:45Speaker 1: it upon yourself to bone that animal out and saw
- 1:44:49Speaker 1: the school plate to where you're not transporting that c
- 1:44:52Speaker 1: w D into another area, especially if you're gonna take
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: it back to wherever your home state is. Yeah, better,
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: better safe and sorry. And to to the earlier point,
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: there are certainly a lot of regulations around it that
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: you just don't want to you don't want to make
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: a mistake there. So I think that's very handy to
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: be able to get that information on in one nice place.
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: And I guess that's kind of a nice uh segue
- 1:45:13Speaker 1: into kind of last thing I thought would be worth
- 1:45:16Speaker 1: touching on before we wrap things up, which is just
- 1:45:19Speaker 1: you know, I've talked a lot about how I've been
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: using on X over the years, just chatting and chatting
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: about it on the podcast and whatnot. But are there
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: any specific things that you think that white tail guys
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: or girls should know specifically about that tool, Any features
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: maybe that are overlooked, any layers of people maybe aren't
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: taking advantage of as much as they should. Um uh,
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: there's a whole lot to us, so I think it's
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: easy for people to miss things. Is there anything that
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: jumps out to you guys that we should leave folks
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: with it to check out next time they're on there. Yeah,
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: we don't see enough people using sharing in the app.
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: You can share way points with people, So I even
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: think of like the Midwest, when you if you have
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: a buddy come to your place that you lease or whatever,
- 1:46:00Speaker 1: all you gotta do is share a waypoint of a
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: true stand with them, and you might be able to
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: send them out to that true stand without ever having
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: to like take them out there. Just give them the
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: waypoint and should draw a line of where they're supposed
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: to walk. And you don't even have to walk them
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: out there the next morning. You can just turn them
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: loose and they can be very confident that they can
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: get to that true stand as long as they have
- 1:46:19Speaker 1: that waypoint and that wine. It's you know, to add
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: on that. The other thing you can do is sharing
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: with loved ones. You know, just if you're going to
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: travel out to Montana and being able to share it
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: with you know, maybe a hunting buddy, so someone knows
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: the general area that you are. Maybe it's just where
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: your camp is. You know, you're obviously not going to
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: share your hunting locations with everyone, but being able to
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: share them with your close hunting buddies and your loved
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: ones just for peace of mind UM is another, you know,
- 1:46:48Speaker 1: a great way to use it. UM Definitely when you're
- 1:46:51Speaker 1: pointing out different areas. If you're sharing a location, but
- 1:46:53Speaker 1: the one we find a lot is a lot of
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: folks sharing it just for peace of mind, so someone
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: knows where they're at. Yeah, yeah, that's a good way
- 1:47:01Speaker 1: to just make sure I make sure you don't do
- 1:47:04Speaker 1: what I've done in the past one year I I
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: have been telling my wife for hour was every day,
- 1:47:09Speaker 1: And then I switched up my plans and moved to
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: a new area and didn't have cell phone service for
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: a whole day, and more than twenty four hours passed
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: by from last time she'd heard from me, and she
- 1:47:19Speaker 1: kind of got worried. Had the cops go check on
- 1:47:21Speaker 1: my campsite? I wasn't there anymore, So don't don't make
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: the mistake I've made. Oh man, that was a tough
- 1:47:30Speaker 1: lesson to learn, but um, yeah, I mean, there's those
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: things you mentioned, are are all things I've done very helpful.
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: That the sending a tech you can just text away
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: point to to a friend, and that works a whole
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: lot better than saying, Okay, park at the big oak tree,
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: follow the you know, the glowing tabs for hundred yards,
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: then you get across the creek, go left fifty yards,
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: wait for the owl to hoot, and then you know
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: you're there. I mean, that's that doesn't work all that
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: The shared waypoint improve things dramatically. So I'm I'm appreciative
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: of the two of you guys have put out there,
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: and uh, I appreciate you guys taking the time to
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: talk about it and share some of your experiences out
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: there chasing chasing white Tails and the promised land Um.
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: I'll be back this year. I'm looking forward to it.
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: So anything you guys want to wrap up with any
- 1:48:19Speaker 1: other final things that people should look out for as
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: far age future features, or maybe maybe talk through exactly
- 1:48:27Speaker 1: where they can find onyx online if if people aren't
- 1:48:30Speaker 1: familiar with it too. Yeah, yeah, absolutely so, I mean
- 1:48:34Speaker 1: you can always if you haven't tried the app, you
- 1:48:36Speaker 1: can just install it. You get seven days free, so
- 1:48:38Speaker 1: you can try everything out for free, and then if
- 1:48:40Speaker 1: you enjoy it, you can purchase one state where you
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: can purchase all fifty and um features coming out. I mean,
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: I think one big thing I want to get to
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: before that is we you know, we have nationwide public
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: and private boundaries and land ownership names and so the
- 1:48:56Speaker 1: one thing that commonly happens is we're getting these from
- 1:48:59Speaker 1: the individual on ease and so it can be outdated
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: and if that's the case, we do appreciate it when
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: customers send those in and report those there's because that
- 1:49:07Speaker 1: just helps us be more accurate. But also on top
- 1:49:09Speaker 1: of that, you know, requested features, we definitely listen to
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: them UM and helps us make a better product. So
- 1:49:15Speaker 1: we look at all the customers as boots on the
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: ground for us, just helping, you know, try to get
- 1:49:19Speaker 1: a product that works for everyone, no matter where you're hunting,
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: if you're hunting white tails in the mountain the western
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: Montana or if you're hunting them over in Michigan by
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: you and so looking at it, some of the feedback
- 1:49:30Speaker 1: we've gone is UM being able to just folks want
- 1:49:34Speaker 1: to be able to share more, and so this is
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: something on our radar. UM. We're working on it and
- 1:49:39Speaker 1: definitely will be one of the features coming up is
- 1:49:42Speaker 1: just being able to share more of your data, so
- 1:49:44Speaker 1: multiple way points, maybe tracks, shape, stuff like that, and
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: so you can share those with like a hunting buddy
- 1:49:50Speaker 1: if you're sharing a property that you're hunting on, or
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: if you want to go share like you know, we
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: want to share it to you. Mark some of our
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: white tail hunting spots in Montana to be able to
- 1:49:59Speaker 1: share like a it's like a playlist. UM. The other
- 1:50:02Speaker 1: thing is you know when and weather. We release that
- 1:50:05Speaker 1: this fall, and we're going to continue to expand upon
- 1:50:07Speaker 1: that and provide more information some forecasting stuff and stuff
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: like that that will come out here in the future
- 1:50:14Speaker 1: and then you know that really we have a couple
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: other things that we're keeping under wraps. But I think
- 1:50:20Speaker 1: the biggest thing is if there are features that folks
- 1:50:22Speaker 1: want to see, you know, they can always we we
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: see the ones that they put on our social media
- 1:50:27Speaker 1: and ask about that. We definitely take those into account
- 1:50:30Speaker 1: and we pass those up the chain and make sure
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: our engineers here them and we start to kind of
- 1:50:35Speaker 1: prioritize and see what folks wanna have in the app.
- 1:50:40Speaker 1: That's great. Yeah, yeah, I like story. Yeah, I like
- 1:50:44Speaker 1: your story. Mark on how you're using public land to
- 1:50:48Speaker 1: get down to these river bottoms and taking a one
- 1:50:50Speaker 1: or two mile hike. That's that's a cool adventure. If
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: you're if you're coming from out east or Midwest, coming
- 1:50:55Speaker 1: to Montana, coming to North Dakota, I think that's really
- 1:50:58Speaker 1: cool adventure to be able to come out and camp
- 1:51:01Speaker 1: and do those hikes every day, set up tree stand,
- 1:51:03Speaker 1: learn what the white tails are doing in the area.
- 1:51:05Speaker 1: Maybe there's an opportunity to do a five mile meb
- 1:51:08Speaker 1: you can find some public land that's a five mile
- 1:51:10Speaker 1: hike down to a river where you actually got to
- 1:51:11Speaker 1: set up a base camp and then maybe you have
- 1:51:13Speaker 1: an old square mile of river bottom all to yourself,
- 1:51:15Speaker 1: I guarantee and September in Montana whitetil hunting with the boat,
- 1:51:20Speaker 1: you likely have that all to yourself, unless there's of
- 1:51:23Speaker 1: course private landowners who's hunting it something. But yeah, I
- 1:51:27Speaker 1: really like that strategy that you just described, um, and
- 1:51:30Speaker 1: you can really make an adventure out of it. So yeah,
- 1:51:34Speaker 1: so I just encourage people to think like that, have
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: a plan, get on on X and have a couple
- 1:51:40Speaker 1: of different options to check them out, like you're saying,
- 1:51:43Speaker 1: and yeah, get out and have an adventure. They're definitely
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: there's definitely an opportunity in states like Montana and your
- 1:51:50Speaker 1: neighboring states there to to take your white tail hunting
- 1:51:53Speaker 1: to just a different place, you know. Like I mentioned earlier,
- 1:51:56Speaker 1: I love these new experiences and you can take something
- 1:51:59Speaker 1: that you of a lot, like a white tailed deer,
- 1:52:01Speaker 1: and then experience hunting that animal and it's just a
- 1:52:03Speaker 1: completely different situation. Um, whether it's backpacking in or hiking
- 1:52:07Speaker 1: into a river bottom, or just being in a wide
- 1:52:10Speaker 1: up in different landscape and seeing different places. It's it's
- 1:52:13Speaker 1: a really cool thing that. I mean, anyone who's listened
- 1:52:16Speaker 1: to Wired Hunt knows that I've encouraged this many times before.
- 1:52:19Speaker 1: But I'll just say it again. You know, go out
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: there and and experience these different things, push yourself to
- 1:52:25Speaker 1: two new areas, to new types of hunting. It's gonna
- 1:52:27Speaker 1: make you better hunter. You're gonna have a whole lot
- 1:52:29Speaker 1: of fun doing it. And UH, a little bit of
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: adventure in your life is UH is not going to
- 1:52:34Speaker 1: hurt anything at all. So UM, that's my little pep
- 1:52:37Speaker 1: talk for the day. And UH and Eric Zach, I
- 1:52:40Speaker 1: just I appreciate taking the time of chat. It's a
- 1:52:42Speaker 1: lot of fun. Yeah, thanks for having enough. We'll have
- 1:52:46Speaker 1: to do it again soon and hopefully when I'm out
- 1:52:48Speaker 1: there next time for hunt, maybe we can circle up
- 1:52:51Speaker 1: and UH and have a have a cold beverage and
- 1:52:53Speaker 1: swap hunt stories again. Absolutely. Yeah, I'm looking forward to
- 1:52:58Speaker 1: the backcountry white tail hunt. It's gonna happen alright. And
- 1:53:04Speaker 1: that's another episode in the books. One quick additional piece
- 1:53:08Speaker 1: of information about the shed Rally giveaway that we talked
- 1:53:12Speaker 1: about earlier in the episode. If you don't have a
- 1:53:15Speaker 1: Wired Hunt hat or shirt yet, I meant to mention
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: this earlier, but we've got a little discount code going
- 1:53:20Speaker 1: on for you if you do want to pick something
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: up twenty off Wired Hunt Hats and Shirts over at
- 1:53:25Speaker 1: the meat eater dot com store if you use the
- 1:53:28Speaker 1: promo code W two H SHED. That's W, the number two,
- 1:53:34Speaker 1: the letter H, and then the words shed s H
- 1:53:36Speaker 1: E D use that code to get off Wired Hunt
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: Hats and shirts and uh. Then, as we talked about earlier,
- 1:53:43Speaker 1: just wear that gear during SHED rally and you'll be

- 1:53:49Speaker 1: thanks for being patient and understanding of the weird audio
- 1:53:52Speaker 1: thing there in the first half. I know that didn't
- 1:53:54Speaker 1: sound great. Um hopefully for those that did stick around
- 1:53:57Speaker 1: for it, you found our conversation interesting and I miss
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: we will be uh fixing that issue in the future.
- 1:54:03Speaker 1: So thank you for listening, Thanks for everything, and until
- 1:54:06Speaker 1: next time, stay wired. Dont hm M
