Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:03culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:06media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:10through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:13the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:18Centennial World I know some of you guys like when I say
- 0:22Centennial world like you like how I say it and now it's made
- 0:26me like self-conscious Every time I say it, I'm like I have
- 0:29to say it the way that everybody likes so that they get that
- 0:32brain itch, you know. ANYWAYS, before we jump into the
- 0:35stories for today, I need to address the elephant in the
- 0:37room, which is that yesterday I said strike to deal instead of
- 0:42struck a deal on the podcast and I have not stopped thinking
- 0:45about it. It's been like over 24 hours.
- 0:47It is rotting my brain like I and not stop thinking about it.
- 0:51So please know I do know the proper grammar.
- 0:53I do know it is struck a deal not striked.
- 0:57But sometimes when you do a daily podcast, you're just going
- 1:00to say the wrong thing, OK Anyways, I am very cottage vibes
- 1:05today. I have like full wet hair from
- 1:07being outside in the sun. It is such a beautiful day.
- 1:10I'm so happy to be home and to be delivering you guys these
- 1:14stories from my cottage bedroom. So the first story that I have
- 1:17for you guys today is that Connor Franta has seemingly
- 1:20confirmed that he was in fact dating Troy Sivan back in the
- 1:26day. So this is some OG YouTube news.
- 1:29Annabelle actually sent this to me like 2 days ago and she was
- 1:32like here's some like my build news you could include in mini
- 1:35scroll if you feel like it. And I just forgot to talk about
- 1:38it yesterday. But when I first opened it I was
- 1:40like wait a minute, Troy Sivan is dating Connor Franta Like I
- 1:44thought it was current and I was like what do you mean mild news?
- 1:47Troy Sivan is dating like an OG back in the day YouTube right
- 1:53now. Anyways, I obviously
- 1:55misinterpreted it. Basically a decade ago there
- 1:58were rumors all over the Internet that Youtubers Troy
- 2:00Sivan and Connor Franta were dating.
- 2:02And I feel like some of you guys might not know if you're Gen.
- 2:05Z or Zelenials that Troy Sivan started as a YouTube which is
- 2:09just like so cool. He's like such a success story
- 2:12out of YouTube. So anyways, people shipped them
- 2:14back then. They were like in the same
- 2:15friend group and there were rumors that they were dating and
- 2:17people called them Tronner. I like that was their couple
- 2:20name. So this week on the Obsessed
- 2:22with Brooke Averick podcast, Connor was talking about how he
- 2:26knew Chapel Rhone back in 2014. He said, quote, I found it as in
- 2:30her music on YouTube with my boyfriend at the time.
- 2:34We found the song. It had like no plays and her
- 2:36voice was unbelievable. So we started tweeting about it
- 2:39like this girl is incredible. We were like, she's the next
- 2:42Adele. So obviously the quote, my
- 2:43boyfriend at the time just kind of like slipped out and fans
- 2:47connected the dots because Chapel when she started blowing
- 2:50up recently, there was like this unearthed tweet that came up
- 2:54where Troy Sivan had tweeted about like, quote UN quote
- 2:57discovering her in 2014. He wrote, I've had a 16 year old
- 3:00girl on repeat for two months and he linked to one of her
- 3:03music videos Die young. Yes, I guess that is
- 3:07confirmation for all of the OG YouTube fans of that kind of
- 3:12group that Troy Sivan and Connor Franta were dating.
- 3:16The next story that I have for you guys is that Internet users
- 3:20are speculating that Alex Cooper is going broke because she
- 3:24allegedly is looking for sponsors for her 30th birthday
- 3:27party. So when stories like this come
- 3:30up, I can never tell if it's just like, a fundamental
- 3:34misunderstanding of how influencing NPR works or if it's
- 3:38more so like schadenfreude. It's just kind of easy to, like,
- 3:42flip the blame and be like, look at how greedy they are.
- 3:44Like, you have this $60 million Spotify deal and, like, you
- 3:47can't even fund your own birthday party.
- 3:49I'm not really sure. So basically, Page Six ran an
- 3:52article talking about Alex's 30th birthday party, which is
- 3:54coming up in a couple of weeks. They reportedly got a hold of a
- 3:58pitch deck that Alex and her team were using to find sponsors
- 4:02for the event. They published a couple of the
- 4:04slides. One of the slides is like the
- 4:05VIP guest list and it includes names like Alex, Earl, Harry,
- 4:08Jowsey, Madeleine, Archie, obviously Tory Burch, Andy
- 4:12Cohen. Random but I kind of love it.
- 4:16Anyways. So this has caused so much
- 4:18uproar online. People are saying that she's
- 4:21going broke. Others are saying that they're
- 4:24like never going to touch a brand if they sponsor a birthday
- 4:27party of an influencer. Like this is just so tone deaf.
- 4:29And like she has enough money, why can't she pay for home
- 4:32birthday party? And I think it comes down to a
- 4:35few things. Alex Cooper is absolutely not
- 4:37going broke. Like absolutely not.
- 4:39This event is like a high visibility event.
- 4:42This is like APR moment for Alex, you know, for herself as a
- 4:47brand, not herself as a person. And so because it's a high
- 4:50visibility event, it makes sense for brands to foot that bill in
- 4:54exchange for sponsorship because there's going to be so many eyes
- 4:57on it. There's going to be so much
- 4:58coverage. And I think one of the first
- 5:00things that you really learn in business as a business owner
- 5:03myself, which I took me too long to learn, but one of the first
- 5:06things you do learn actually, if you're like paying attention, is
- 5:08to never use your own money. I think we see that even when an
- 5:11entrepreneur, let's say, sells out their company, they make
- 5:14millions of dollars and then they go start another one and
- 5:17they raise VC instead of like self funding it.
- 5:20And that's just because it is I, in some people's minds, good
- 5:24business practice to never use your own money.
- 5:27So for this, this is like a business event for her, right?
- 5:30And like people are speculating she's going to sell tickets for
- 5:33fans to attend as well. I am sure that Alex for her 30th
- 5:36is going to have a more intimate celebration with her friends and
- 5:39family that she will be paying for.
- 5:41Or I don't know, maybe they'll split the bill.
- 5:43I'm not sure. But you know what I mean.
- 5:45Like something private. But this is a public event.
- 5:48This is like a brand marketing activation almost for her
- 5:52personal brand and for Call Her Daddy and the Unwell Network.
- 5:55So yeah, it makes sense to have sponsors.
- 5:58I think it's so funny when we get mad at influencers or
- 6:01celebrities. I think it happens much more
- 6:03with influencers for doing like regular, quote, UN quote,
- 6:07business things. But I think maybe because we see
- 6:09them as regular people and maybe a lot of us who consume their
- 6:13content aren't super familiar with that world, it feels really
- 6:16greedy and it feels exploitative.
- 6:19But they're actually not exploiting us at all.
- 6:21Like there's no exploitation they're going on, as far as I
- 6:25can tell, you know, asking for brands to foot the bill for her
- 6:28birthday party. Because it is.
- 6:29I mean, if you think about like an award show, for example, like
- 6:31that's a high visibility event, like the Academy, you know, the
- 6:35Academy Awards, like the, what is it the Academy of motion
- 6:38Pictures or whatever that puts on the Oscars?
- 6:40Like they're not paying for that.
- 6:41Like when you walk on the red carpet, there's all the branding
- 6:44behind them on the media wall. Like, you know, that's like
- 6:47typical, right? But I think that this discourse
- 6:49around Alex is just a symptom of influencer fatigue, the cost of
- 6:54living, like how difficult regular life is for everyday
- 6:58people right now. And just, you know, seeing that
- 7:01Alex is trying to throw her own birthday party and branding it
- 7:03as her birthday party and looking for sponsors, I can see
- 7:06how it might rub people the wrong way.
- 7:08But I think we need to not look at something like that as like
- 7:11her birthday party. We need to look at it as like,
- 7:13you know, just a brand activation, essentially like a
- 7:16marketing activation. And, you know, when she did that
- 7:19tour or whatever with Alex Earl, they went to different places.
- 7:23I'm sure that I was sponsored, you know, so it's just like
- 7:25that, OK. And the last story that I have
- 7:28for you guys, this just happened like a couple of hours ago.
- 7:31Molly Mae has announced that she is splitting from Tommy Fury.
- 7:35In an Instagram story posted today, Molly announced that she
- 7:39has split from her long time partner Tommy Fury.
- 7:43Never in a million years did I think I'd ever have to write
- 7:45this after five years of being together.
- 7:47I never imagined our story would end, especially not this way.
- 7:51Clock that I am extremely upset to announce that mine and
- 7:54Tommy's relationship has come to an end.
- 7:57I will forever be grateful for the most important thing to me
- 7:59now and always, my beautiful daughter.
- 8:02Without us, there would be no her.
- 8:03She will always be my priority. I want to thank you all for the
- 8:06love you have shown us over the last five years.
- 8:08You've all been part of our journey and I feel it's right to
- 8:10share this with you all. We'll say I attempt to navigate
- 8:13the coming days and weeks. Please kindly respect my privacy
- 8:16over this difficult time, back when it feels right.
- 8:20So yeah, this is really shocking and a lot of people have noted
- 8:24that, she said. I never imagined our story would
- 8:27end, especially not this way. Like including that little piece
- 8:31is what has told or like what has made speculation I suppose
- 8:35go absolutely wild that he cheated on her or maybe he just
- 8:39broke up with her out of the blue or something like that.
- 8:42But it definitely does not sound like she wanted it to end or
- 8:47expected it to end anytime soon, which is really sad.
- 8:50Molly and Tommy were together for five years and last year,
- 8:54July of last year, about a year ago, they got engaged after they
- 8:57had their little baby. So yeah, it's really sad.
- 9:01Anyways, guys, that is it for Mini SCROLL today.
- 9:03Thank you so much for listening. Please remember to rate, review
- 9:06and subscribe. I love you guys and I will talk
- 9:10to you on Monday, but there will of course be a deep dive
- 9:12tomorrow. OK, bye.
