Speaker 3: Hello Catherine, Hi, Chelsea, you're about to be traveling.
• 0:51
  Speaker 4: You are traveling.
• 0:52
  Speaker 5: I am traveling.
• 0:53
Speaker 1: I have just left in Nantucket.
• 0:56
Speaker 2: Oh yes, Yaminika and I were in Nantucket. We had
• 0:59
Speaker 2: two shows here here, we had a show at the
• 1:01
Speaker 2: Comedy Melody Tent, and now I'm off to Wimbledon.
• 1:05
Speaker 4: That's very exciting, but I will.
• 1:07
  Speaker 1: Be performing tennis.
• 1:08
Speaker 3: Oh, I'm gonna do the first serve.
• 1:11
Speaker 2: Sabena Williams is returning to the singles tennis and I
• 1:14
Speaker 2: am too amazing returning. I'm debuting at fifty one. I
• 1:18
  Speaker 2: figured why.
• 1:19
Speaker 4: Not listen challenge yourself.
• 1:21
Speaker 2: But I'm bringing Megan Gaily, who's a comedian whopes for me.
• 1:24
Speaker 2: It's her dream to go to go to Wimbledon, so
• 1:27
Speaker 2: I'm bringing her. She's coming for like two days and
• 1:30
Speaker 2: then I'm going on it. Yeah, I'm going to be
• 1:31
Speaker 2: in London for a few days and then I'm going
• 1:33
Speaker 2: to go on a nice boat and then I'm going
• 1:35
Speaker 2: to go to Spanish immersion school.
• 1:37
Speaker 4: Oh oh in Spain.
• 1:39
Speaker 1: I'm guessing Madrid. Yes, Spanish school.
• 1:42
  Speaker 4: I love it.
• 1:43
Speaker 3: I think that's going to like catapult your Spanish.
• 1:45
  Speaker 2: I know that's what I'm hoping. I think I might
• 1:47
Speaker 2: do it for like two weeks straight. I mean, we'll
• 1:49
Speaker 2: see if I can last that long. Yeah, but it's
• 1:51
  Speaker 2: like six.
• 1:51
  Speaker 1: Hours a day.
• 1:52
Speaker 3: Well, you speak enough too that if someone like, if
• 1:54
Speaker 3: it's totally immersive and they're just speaking Spanish, you like, you'll.
• 1:57
Speaker 1: Be totally immersive. I'm staying at a nice hotel.
• 1:59
Speaker 5: I love to listen.
• 2:02
Speaker 2: I looked into the possibility and I was like, this
• 2:06
Speaker 2: is better. If I have my own bar and restaurant
• 2:09
Speaker 2: every night, that's okay, I want to hook up or
• 2:12
Speaker 2: you know, bounce around town. It's Madrid in the summertime,
• 2:15
Speaker 2: so it's to be popping. So I'm excited about it.
• 2:18
Speaker 2: It's going to be a Chelsea classic Chelsea adventure.
• 2:22
Speaker 4: But I agree with that.
• 2:23
Speaker 3: It's like you can work your brain during the day
• 2:25
Speaker 3: and then at night you can party and have fun.
• 2:27
Speaker 4: Any blush if you need.
• 2:28
Speaker 2: Yes exactly, or we'll practice my Spanish, my procace listen.
• 2:32
Speaker 2: I've always been looking for a man with a language
• 2:33
Speaker 2: barrier so perfect. Yeah, I think that this might be
• 2:36
Speaker 2: an opportunity for multiple things.
• 2:38
  Speaker 5: Well.
• 2:39
Speaker 3: Our guest today is a legendary comic and actress. Her
• 2:42
Speaker 3: new special, Wanda Sykes Legacy is on Netflix now.
• 2:45
Speaker 1: Okay, I love it, love it, love it.
• 2:47
Speaker 2: The woman who has her new stand up special out
• 2:50
Speaker 2: on Netflix called Legacy, which is a plus plus, is
• 2:54
Speaker 2: joining us here today. Wanda Sykes is here. Hi, Wanda, Hi,
• 2:58
Speaker 2: how you doing This? Is our producer Catherine Hey, Catherine, Hi,
• 3:02
  Speaker 2: how are you?
• 3:03
Speaker 1: Where are we where are you zooming in from?
• 3:05
Speaker 2: Are you at the opening of the Obama Library today
• 3:07
  Speaker 2: in Chicago?
• 3:08
Speaker 5: Wanda, I wish, I wish I could have been there,
• 3:11
Speaker 5: But actually I was in Costco while that was going on.
• 3:14
Speaker 5: I was in the middle of Costco, like just sobbing.
• 3:18
Speaker 1: Why oh because because of the speeches.
• 3:21
Speaker 5: Yeah, oh yeah, Actually the Eddie veteran the kids took
• 3:25
  Speaker 5: me out.
• 3:26
Speaker 2: Oh, I haven't had I've been recording all day, so
• 3:28
Speaker 2: we haven't seen I haven't seen that part, ye, but
• 3:30
Speaker 2: I saw the show Obama's speech talking to him about
• 3:34
Speaker 2: how great he is, because you know, throughout all of
• 3:36
Speaker 2: our time with the Obamas, she's always kind of like,
• 3:40
Speaker 2: this is a regular guy, you know, like I want
• 3:42
Speaker 2: to make sure he keeps his feet on the ground.
• 3:45
Speaker 2: Like she always kind of gives that kind of energy,
• 3:47
Speaker 2: you know, like I'm pissed about being in the White House.
• 3:50
Speaker 1: You maybe do this, and now you know, now I
• 3:53
Speaker 1: gotta deal with all the shit.
• 3:54
Speaker 2: So it was so and of course you loves this man, obviously,
• 3:58
Speaker 2: but to hear obviously, I mean, we all love him too,
• 4:02
Speaker 2: but to hear her talk about him in that way
• 4:05
Speaker 2: was so beautiful and honestly right on fucking time.
• 4:09
Speaker 5: Hm. Absolutely, absolutely, it was great. Wait do you see
• 4:13
Speaker 5: Eddy veteran? These kids?
• 4:14
Speaker 1: Oh man, really, what happens? Give us a preview? Tell
• 4:17
  Speaker 1: me yeah.
• 4:18
Speaker 5: They composed a song, an original song, just for the
• 4:22
Speaker 5: occasion and along with these these local kids, and it
• 4:27
  Speaker 5: was just incredible.
• 4:29
  Speaker 2: Oh, I can't wait to see that. I can't wait
• 4:31
Speaker 2: to see that, Wanda. I love your news special. You
• 4:34
Speaker 2: better get an Emmy nomination for it. It's so great.
• 4:38
Speaker 2: One of the things I admire the most about you,
• 4:40
  Speaker 2: I realized, I know, I found out a lot about
• 4:42
Speaker 2: you doing the research for this, but that I didn't
• 4:45
Speaker 2: realize I knew because I've known you for so many years,
• 4:47
Speaker 2: but I don't really know you well. But one of
• 4:50
Speaker 2: the things that I've admired about you for as long
• 4:53
Speaker 2: as I have known you is just how political you
• 4:56
Speaker 2: are and how you talk about politics and your specials.
• 4:59
Speaker 2: So many comedians really try to steer clear of that
• 5:02
Speaker 2: and instead just show up at the White House for
• 5:04
Speaker 2: a UFC fight and act like they don't know anything
• 5:07
  Speaker 2: about politics.
• 5:08
Speaker 1: So it's really what what?
• 5:10
Speaker 5: Oh this is the White House? The president lives here.
• 5:14
Speaker 5: Oh wow, I didn't know? Oh who knew?
• 5:18
Speaker 1: And I love what you said. I was watching your
• 5:21
  Speaker 1: Vulture interview.
• 5:22
Speaker 2: I love that interviewer, the guy that interviewed you for Vulture,
• 5:25
Speaker 2: He interviewed heat He asks the best fucking questions, don't you.
• 5:28
Speaker 5: Think he does? He's great.
• 5:30
Speaker 1: Yeah, he really does his research.
• 5:32
Speaker 2: But I watch your Vulture interview and he was asking you,
• 5:34
Speaker 2: you know, about your political stance and do you feel
• 5:37
Speaker 2: how you feel about being political? Do you ever get scared?
• 5:40
Speaker 2: And I thought that was a really interesting question and
• 5:43
Speaker 2: and what you said about it. So I would love
• 5:45
Speaker 2: to just talk a little bit about that, like how
• 5:48
Speaker 2: you frame that and how you view being political, because
• 5:51
Speaker 2: I'm sure you know that I feel very strongly about,
• 5:54
Speaker 2: you know, the stuff that you're talking about too, And
• 5:56
Speaker 2: I feel like it's a responsibility, not an option.
• 6:00
  Speaker 5: Absolutely. I mean I think that's that's our you know,
• 6:02
Speaker 5: what we're supposed to do. And and honestly, and those
• 6:05
Speaker 5: are the comedians that resonate with me. I feel like
• 6:09
Speaker 5: we're like the Daredevil's kind of like we're the ones
• 6:11
Speaker 5: who are supposed to go out and give a voice
• 6:14
Speaker 5: to the people who are marginalized. And I happen to
• 6:19
Speaker 5: check a lot of boxes in those margins. You know,
• 6:24
Speaker 5: being a woman, being you know, African American, being queer.
• 6:29
  Speaker 5: So it's just it's just to me, that's that's what
• 6:32
Speaker 5: I'm meant to, you know, I would feel weird if
• 6:35
Speaker 5: I went out there and just talked about I don't know,
• 6:38
Speaker 5: just everyday stuff and not about what's really affecting me
• 6:42
Speaker 5: in my life and everyone else.
• 6:45
Speaker 1: Yeah, I feel the same way.
• 6:47
  Speaker 2: I feel like it's such a and I've learned a
• 6:49
Speaker 2: lot over the years of when it's important to say
• 6:52
Speaker 2: something and when it's just kind of noise, you know,
• 6:55
Speaker 2: and when to pitch in and to be a little
• 6:57
Speaker 2: bit more I guess, discerning out, you know, saying things
• 7:01
Speaker 2: so it's not like you're just banging the same drum
• 7:04
Speaker 2: all the time. To have an artfulness about it, which
• 7:07
Speaker 2: I've really started to grown to appreciate and understand more
• 7:10
Speaker 2: as I've gotten older. So that's been helpful because obviously
• 7:14
Speaker 2: we're all living through this. But I feel the same
• 7:16
Speaker 2: way about comics who don't address it, who don't want
• 7:18
Speaker 2: to talk about politics.
• 7:20
Speaker 1: Or can't say anything.
• 7:21
Speaker 2: I'd rather you be emphatically against what we're saying and
• 7:26
Speaker 2: be honest about that than trying to pretend you don't
• 7:28
Speaker 2: know what's going on. I find that to be in
• 7:30
Speaker 2: affront to all beat like to humanity.
• 7:33
Speaker 1: But while I was doing this.
• 7:34
Speaker 2: Reading about you, I had no idea you were married
• 7:37
Speaker 2: to a man at some point.
• 7:39
  Speaker 1: What were you thinking? I can't believe I didn't know
• 7:42
  Speaker 1: this about you.
• 7:46
Speaker 5: I'm just trying to fit in for years. I was
• 7:48
Speaker 5: trying to fit in, you know. I heard that was
• 7:51
Speaker 5: the way to go. I heard that was the way
• 7:53
  Speaker 5: to go.
• 7:53
Speaker 1: Oh my god, how long did that last? Wanda?
• 7:56
Speaker 5: I chose that lifestyle to I really did.
• 8:01
Speaker 2: I would love to see some photographs from that era
• 8:04
  Speaker 2: of your life.
• 8:06
Speaker 1: No, what how long did that last?
• 8:09
Speaker 5: Oh? Wow, that that lasted? What I good? Lord? Maybe
• 8:14
  Speaker 5: six seven years?
• 8:16
  Speaker 1: Yeah?
• 8:16
Speaker 2: And when you did you when you left that marriage,
• 8:19
Speaker 2: did you tell him that you're not in a men
• 8:22
Speaker 2: or was it just him personal?
• 8:24
Speaker 5: And you know what, that wasn't even why it ended.
• 8:28
Speaker 5: I think it just was. It just was a bad situation,
• 8:32
  Speaker 5: bad relationship. Yeah.
• 8:33
Speaker 2: And that you grew up on an army with an
• 8:35
Speaker 2: army father. I had no idea about that either. That's crazy.
• 8:39
Speaker 5: Yeah. My dad's a retired colonel.
• 8:41
Speaker 2: So that must have been a really kind of very
• 8:44
Speaker 2: specific strict upbringing, do.
• 8:46
Speaker 5: You know what? Not really the way my dad approached
• 8:50
Speaker 5: it is. I mean, you know, he took his job seriously,
• 8:53
Speaker 5: but when you know, he came home, he took off
• 8:56
Speaker 5: the uniform and you know, read the paper chilled and
• 9:01
Speaker 5: he was just he was just dad. You know. It
• 9:04
Speaker 5: wasn't make your bed and tighten the corners and all
• 9:07
Speaker 5: that stuff like that. No, we but just but just
• 9:10
Speaker 5: being and you know, growing up in Virginia with you know,
• 9:15
Speaker 5: black parents, it's it's strict already. It really the army.
• 9:19
Speaker 5: It was nothing else that the army could do. Really honestly,
• 9:24
Speaker 5: I really don't know what else the army could have done.
• 9:26
Speaker 1: Like what kind of rules did they have for you
• 9:28
  Speaker 1: growing up?
• 9:29
Speaker 5: It was mainly like respect and u you know was
• 9:33
Speaker 5: it was yes sir, no ma'am and you know you
• 9:39
Speaker 5: cleaned up and you had we had chores and everything.
• 9:42
Speaker 5: But it was mainly just like just a lot of
• 9:45
Speaker 5: behavior and you know, you don't you don't act up
• 9:48
Speaker 5: in school. You know, you get good grades and do
• 9:52
Speaker 5: your homework, say your grace before you eat, and you
• 9:56
Speaker 5: know church on Sundays.
• 9:58
Speaker 1: Did you like going to church? I did?
• 10:00
Speaker 5: I did? Do you go still I go online covid.
• 10:08
Speaker 5: Covid was great man with the online church. I was
• 10:12
Speaker 5: going to church all over the country, you know, here,
• 10:15
Speaker 5: popping there, you see what they're doing over here, you know.
• 10:19
Speaker 5: But I finally joined the church and it's it's in Alexandria, Virginia.
• 10:24
Speaker 5: So I you know, when I'm in town, I go,
• 10:26
  Speaker 5: I pop in.
• 10:27
Speaker 1: That's nice. And does Alex go with you?
• 10:30
  Speaker 5: No, No, she's.
• 10:32
Speaker 2: She's French, she's she's friends. The whole special is like,
• 10:37
Speaker 2: I love that you have her smoking cigarettes only to
• 10:40
Speaker 2: reveal that she doesn't smoke cigarettes at the end.
• 10:43
Speaker 5: Not at all. But it's just how I've always seen her.
• 10:46
Speaker 5: I've always seen her just.
• 10:49
Speaker 2: So she's French, so she's not interested in church. But
• 10:52
Speaker 2: you so that's interesting that you still go to church
• 10:54
Speaker 2: and that you're back in Virginia.
• 10:55
Speaker 5: I'm all French people don't go, well, most of them don't.
• 10:59
Speaker 5: It's not that you're don't talk about it. But you
• 11:01
Speaker 5: know what, there's so many churches in Europe, especially like
• 11:05
Speaker 5: in France, there's tons of churches. I mean, look they
• 11:09
Speaker 5: have not they got you know.
• 11:11
Speaker 1: Yeah, but their churches.
• 11:12
Speaker 2: The churches want to seem like historical but their churches
• 11:16
Speaker 2: seem like a relic from the past because half of
• 11:19
Speaker 2: those churches you go into, it's like it's tourists, right,
• 11:22
Speaker 2: you know, like Lasagrada and Barcelona. You're like, oh my God,
• 11:25
Speaker 2: and then you're like, wait, you forget that you're actually
• 11:27
Speaker 2: in a place of worship.
• 11:29
Speaker 5: Right, It's more like a museum, I guess.
• 11:32
Speaker 1: But it's interesting that what about the kids. Do the
• 11:34
Speaker 1: kids ever go to church with you?
• 11:35
Speaker 5: They've been a couple of times with me, yeah, but
• 11:39
  Speaker 5: but not really.
• 11:40
Speaker 2: Okay, Well, I think it's interesting when people return to
• 11:42
  Speaker 2: their roots.
• 11:43
Speaker 5: Like I've failed at that. That's that's one thing I go, Oh, man,
• 11:47
Speaker 5: I didn't make my kids go to church.
• 11:49
Speaker 2: I think in these modern times we're living in, it
• 11:51
Speaker 2: would be a pretty big feat to get two kids
• 11:53
Speaker 2: to go to church.
• 11:54
  Speaker 5: I know.
• 11:54
Speaker 2: But I do think this like returned to like you
• 11:57
Speaker 2: return to the church. Like, it's very interesting at the
• 12:00
Speaker 2: phase of life that you're in that these things are
• 12:04
Speaker 2: still in your life, or that you've returned to them.
• 12:06
Speaker 1: Don't you do you ever think about that?
• 12:08
Speaker 5: Well? I think it's what keeps me grounded. I guess
• 12:11
Speaker 5: I'm not not necessarily grounded. It's just my it's my base,
• 12:15
  Speaker 5: It's where I'm comfortable. It's not really grant, it's my
• 12:19
Speaker 5: support really, yeah, it's my foundation. So it was pretty easy,
• 12:25
Speaker 5: I guess to ease back into it.
• 12:27
Speaker 1: And does Alex like Virginia as a French woman.
• 12:30
Speaker 5: I don't think she has an opinion. You don't she
• 12:36
Speaker 5: would would she preferred to South of France? Absolutely?
• 12:46
  Speaker 1: What about La?
• 12:46
Speaker 2: What do you think about La and living in La?
• 12:49
Speaker 2: Because don't you go back and forth?
• 12:50
Speaker 5: Yeah, I still have my place in La. Yeah, I
• 12:53
Speaker 5: like it out there. I like it out in LA.
• 12:56
Speaker 5: I have great friends out there. It's funny. When I'm there,
• 12:59
  Speaker 5: it's like I'm working and I feel like I'm in
• 13:02
Speaker 5: show business. And when I'm in Philadelphia, I go, oh,
• 13:06
Speaker 5: you know, I'm in Philly.
• 13:08
  Speaker 2: You know.
• 13:09
Speaker 5: Sometimes I've been out you know, like gardening or whatever,
• 13:13
Speaker 5: and I just go, I wonder how much money I'm
• 13:15
Speaker 5: losing right now just out here not doing show business stuff.
• 13:21
  Speaker 6: You know.
• 13:22
Speaker 5: But but it's good because that's that's where I get creative.
• 13:26
Speaker 5: That's where you know, I'm I have my boots on
• 13:29
Speaker 5: the ground as far as what's actually happening.
• 13:32
Speaker 1: Yeah, I find LA. Don't you feel like everyone in
• 13:35
Speaker 1: LA has gotten sober.
• 13:37
Speaker 5: Oh wow, you gotta hang out with my friends.
• 13:40
Speaker 2: There's a lot of sober people in LA. Now, there's
• 13:43
  Speaker 2: a lot.
• 13:44
  Speaker 5: You're right, You're right, and you know it's I think
• 13:46
Speaker 5: it's our peers and we're all worried about our livers now, right.
• 13:50
  Speaker 1: I know, But I don't. I'm never going to give
• 13:52
Speaker 1: up drinking, do you know what I mean?
• 13:53
Speaker 5: Like, it's so No, I'm not doing that.
• 13:55
Speaker 1: Yeah, I know you're on the same team.
• 13:57
Speaker 5: I'm on with you drinking. I'm I'm still ting buck.
• 14:01
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 14:01
Speaker 2: And if that takes me down, then so be it.
• 14:03
Speaker 2: Like then that's the way it's going to go down.
• 14:05
Speaker 2: But I went to three dinners last week and a
• 14:08
Speaker 2: total of eleven people were at three of these dinners
• 14:12
Speaker 2: and I was the only person drinking at.
• 14:15
Speaker 1: All three dinners. Oh wow, yes.
• 14:18
Speaker 2: And I was like, wow, look what's become of us?
• 14:21
Speaker 2: I said, look at everyone. Everyone's sober and not not
• 14:23
Speaker 2: that people. Only one of the women was sober. The
• 14:28
Speaker 2: others just had no interest in alcohol. And I was baffled.
• 14:32
  Speaker 7: What were they?
• 14:33
Speaker 5: What were the old weed?
• 14:34
Speaker 1: No? No, but I was on weed and alcohol.
• 14:38
Speaker 4: Somebody's got to bring the party.
• 14:39
Speaker 1: Yes, somebody's got to bring the party.
• 14:41
Speaker 4: I mean, god, yeah.
• 14:44
Speaker 1: Where do you do stage time?
• 14:45
Speaker 2: Because when I saw you at Jane Fonda's thing, we
• 14:47
Speaker 2: both saw each other at a Jane Fonda event for
• 14:49
Speaker 2: a Climate Her Climate Pack.
• 14:51
  Speaker 1: Jane is.
• 14:52
Speaker 2: I know, Jane is a really good friend of yours,
• 14:54
Speaker 2: and she's a really great friend of mine as well.
• 14:56
Speaker 2: And this woman is tireless in her efforts I have.
• 15:00
Speaker 2: I've never seen anything like it in my entire life.
• 15:02
Speaker 2: I've never seen anybody work as hard.
• 15:03
Speaker 1: As Jane fonder works.
• 15:05
  Speaker 5: Can't name a person, can't name one. She's I mean incredible.
• 15:09
Speaker 5: I really think she was put on this earth to
• 15:11
Speaker 5: make us all feel bad about ourselves. Really.
• 15:13
Speaker 2: She told me that she makes a hundred calls before
• 15:16
Speaker 2: noon every single day to raise money for Climate her
• 15:19
  Speaker 2: Climate Pack.
• 15:20
Speaker 1: One hundred, one hundred calls per day.
• 15:23
Speaker 4: That's wild by noon.
• 15:26
Speaker 2: I mean, can you imagine being that annoying and having
• 15:28
Speaker 2: to call people and ask them for money one hundred
• 15:31
Speaker 2: times a day. I would be like, forget it, forget
• 15:34
Speaker 2: about the climate. I don't have it in me.
• 15:37
Speaker 5: I can't see myself doing that, especially at Jane's age.
• 15:41
Speaker 5: I'm like, let the sun Win, what do I care?
• 15:45
Speaker 1: You know, how did you guys first meet on Monster
• 15:50
  Speaker 1: in Law?
• 15:50
  Speaker 8: Was it?
• 15:51
Speaker 5: Yeah? Monster in Law?
• 15:52
Speaker 1: So what was your first interaction?
• 15:54
Speaker 5: Like incredible. I was so nervous because you know, it's
• 15:59
Speaker 5: Jane Fonda and this was her first project since she
• 16:04
Speaker 5: kind of like semi retired. So I'm like, oh my god,
• 16:08
Speaker 5: you know, all my scenes are with her, what is
• 16:10
Speaker 5: this gonna be like? And she walked in and she
• 16:15
Speaker 5: just was like Wanda and just gave me a big
• 16:18
Speaker 5: hug and was like, I'm Jane Fonda. And I'm like, like,
• 16:22
Speaker 5: we didn't know that, but okay, and she's like I am,
• 16:25
Speaker 5: you know, just so excited to work with you. And
• 16:27
Speaker 5: she was just so gracious and just you know, she's like,
• 16:32
Speaker 5: you're gonna have to help me out a lot because
• 16:33
Speaker 5: it's been a while since I've you know, done this.
• 16:35
Speaker 5: I'm like, okay, now it's a little patronizing, but all right, Okay,
• 16:41
Speaker 5: I appreciate it. I appreciate like this is a sweet
• 16:45
Speaker 5: she's just a sweetheart, really just genuine good just a good,
• 16:49
  Speaker 5: good woman.
• 16:50
Speaker 2: I mean, you've done a lot of acting work and
• 16:52
Speaker 2: you're in a lot of so I love you and
• 16:54
Speaker 2: the other two. I mean, that is so fucking funny
• 16:56
Speaker 2: that show. Uh, how do you decide when you're gonna
• 16:59
Speaker 2: do stuff and you're going to do a special when
• 17:01
Speaker 2: you're gonna take on a TV show? Or do you
• 17:04
Speaker 2: just wait for opportunities to present themselves.
• 17:06
Speaker 5: That's usually how it happens. Opportunities present themselves. Or I
• 17:11
Speaker 5: come up with an ida and I go, oh, I think,
• 17:13
Speaker 5: I'm yeah, let me try this. I want to let
• 17:15
Speaker 5: me see if I can get this one. You know,
• 17:17
Speaker 5: get this up and go on. Far as the specials,
• 17:21
Speaker 5: you kind of know, right, I mean, you you get
• 17:24
Speaker 5: the material going and and then you get to the
• 17:26
Speaker 5: points like I think I got something, and then it's
• 17:29
Speaker 5: like I need when I feel like I'm like six
• 17:33
Speaker 5: months away, then I'll then I'll tell my agent, hey,
• 17:37
  Speaker 5: let's you know, let's do a special, because then that'll
• 17:39
Speaker 5: at least give me another year to work on it.
• 17:44
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 17:44
Speaker 2: I think specials are really specific to each comedian, Like
• 17:47
Speaker 2: how many times you have to run a set? How
• 17:50
Speaker 2: many times you have to do it. Some people feel
• 17:52
Speaker 2: like they have to do it two hundred times. There
• 17:54
Speaker 2: are comedians who can do it fifty times and then
• 17:57
Speaker 2: be ready for a special. But I loved the open
• 18:00
Speaker 2: sequence because she went back to Hampton. Uh is it
• 18:03
Speaker 2: Hampton College or Hampton University.
• 18:04
Speaker 5: Hampton University, Hampton University.
• 18:07
Speaker 2: Which and there's the opening sequence is so beautifully shot.
• 18:10
Speaker 2: And who's like, was that your director's idea? Was that
• 18:12
  Speaker 2: your idea?
• 18:13
Speaker 5: Yeah, Julie dashed. Yeah, I wanted something saying I'm coming
• 18:16
Speaker 5: back home. And you know, she did that amazing movie
• 18:20
Speaker 5: Daughters of the Dust, so she was like, I'm you know,
• 18:23
Speaker 5: she put together the storyboard and I was like, this
• 18:25
Speaker 5: is it. This is exactly what I wanted. You know,
• 18:27
Speaker 5: I wanted the band, I wanted the choir. Uh so yeah,
• 18:31
Speaker 5: she she nailed it, and it's just yeah, I think
• 18:33
  Speaker 5: it's beautiful.
• 18:34
  Speaker 1: It'stif Yeah, it's beautiful.
• 18:35
Speaker 2: And you could tell how impactful it was because you're
• 18:37
Speaker 2: pretty emotional, as you should be.
• 18:39
Speaker 1: Bringing that home is really profound. What number special is
• 18:42
  Speaker 1: this for you?
• 18:43
Speaker 5: I think seven? Wow? I think it's seven. Yeah.
• 18:46
  Speaker 1: Seven?
• 18:47
Speaker 2: And you haven't won an Emmy yet for a stand
• 18:49
Speaker 2: up special or have you?
• 18:51
Speaker 5: No A lot of nominations but no win.
• 18:54
Speaker 1: Okay, well, let's hope that this fucking brings it home.
• 18:58
Speaker 1: How do you feel I want to.
• 18:59
Speaker 2: Ask you a question about like being a female in comedy,
• 19:03
Speaker 2: coming from another female rather than a man asking this question,
• 19:06
Speaker 2: because we get asked the same questions all the time
• 19:09
Speaker 2: from men. But I want to ask you about like
• 19:13
Speaker 2: your competitive spirit or your competitive nature and how you
• 19:17
Speaker 2: see that, how that's changed over the years for you,
• 19:21
Speaker 2: and do you view that as a good thing or
• 19:24
Speaker 2: do you view it as a negative thing.
• 19:26
  Speaker 5: I don't look at it as a competitive thing. I
• 19:29
Speaker 5: I compete with myself.
• 19:31
  Speaker 6: You know.
• 19:31
Speaker 5: It's like, so my next special it has to be better,
• 19:35
Speaker 5: better than Legacy, And I'm already going I don't know
• 19:39
Speaker 5: how I'm gonna do that because this one was so meaningful,
• 19:43
Speaker 5: So like, what's what is the next one going to be?
• 19:47
Speaker 5: But I think like whatever whatever happens, like whatever happens
• 19:52
Speaker 5: in November, whatever happens in two years from now, will
• 19:57
Speaker 5: you know, maybe that'll be something that will inspire the
• 20:02
Speaker 5: next one. Or maybe I'll be like, hey, fuck it,
• 20:04
Speaker 5: that's it, and I did Legacy. I'm done. You know
• 20:06
  Speaker 5: who knows? But yeah, I don't. I don't look at
• 20:10
Speaker 5: it as as competing because if you do that, I
• 20:12
Speaker 5: think you're gonna get out of who you are, you know,
• 20:15
Speaker 5: as far as your voice. I don't want to look
• 20:19
Speaker 5: at somebody else's special and go oh I can do
• 20:23
Speaker 5: that and then start taking on these elements that that
• 20:29
Speaker 5: aren't really authentic to me. But I could pull it off,
• 20:32
  Speaker 5: but I don't, you know, so I don't. Yeah, I
• 20:36
Speaker 5: try not to. I try not to do that. However,
• 20:39
Speaker 5: I will say that there's you know, like for me,
• 20:42
Speaker 5: the one who did it was Chris Rock when he
• 20:45
Speaker 5: did Bring the Pain to me, that elevated comedy, where
• 20:51
Speaker 5: it challenged me, where I said, I got to do
• 20:54
Speaker 5: better and so if so, if I look at that
• 20:58
Speaker 5: as a competition, yeah, but to me, it was more
• 21:00
Speaker 5: like a challenge, not you know, I gotta do you know,
• 21:05
Speaker 5: be better whatever than what he was doing.
• 21:07
Speaker 2: Like it inspired you to want to like create something
• 21:10
Speaker 2: like what about what about Bring the Pain specifically? Was
• 21:14
Speaker 2: it the like the sentiment of it or was there
• 21:17
Speaker 2: something more specific? I mean, obviously that was an incredible
• 21:20
Speaker 2: special I think he wanted to be made for that, right right.
• 21:24
Speaker 5: Yeah, No, I mean no one was doing that. We
• 21:27
Speaker 5: were all not really talking about anything. It was, you know,
• 21:32
Speaker 5: just a lot of sex jokes and black people do this,
• 21:35
Speaker 5: White people do that, and I don't know, it was
• 21:38
Speaker 5: just kind of like comedy was just kind of it
• 21:40
Speaker 5: just like deaf Jam was hot. Deaf Jam was hot,
• 21:44
Speaker 5: which was good because we got a lot of great
• 21:46
Speaker 5: voices from that, great you know, funny comics from that.
• 21:49
Speaker 5: But Chris, I think he brought it back. He brought
• 21:53
Speaker 5: it back to for me, like you know, prior and
• 21:58
Speaker 5: Carlin and back in net Line.
• 22:03
Speaker 2: Yeah, I think there's definitely an evolution that happens. And
• 22:07
Speaker 2: we're living during a time where we're seeing it a lot.
• 22:09
Speaker 2: And I love the time we're living in for the
• 22:12
Speaker 2: reason because there are so many female comics that are
• 22:16
Speaker 2: killing it and crushing it. It's like so nice to
• 22:19
Speaker 2: finally have so many people to reference. And point two
• 22:23
Speaker 2: when people ask you what is it like to be
• 22:25
Speaker 2: you know, what was it like to be one of
• 22:27
Speaker 2: the only women? And it's like we were never.
• 22:29
Speaker 1: I was never in a situation where I was the
• 22:31
  Speaker 1: only woman.
• 22:32
Speaker 2: I'd be on a lineup where I was the only woman,
• 22:34
Speaker 2: but I was not the only woman, you know, Like
• 22:37
Speaker 2: and to see it now where there's so many people
• 22:39
Speaker 2: that you can refer to and and speak to, and
• 22:42
Speaker 2: you when somebody asks you who should we be looking
• 22:45
Speaker 2: at You're like, oh, this is so fucking nice. It
• 22:47
Speaker 2: actually has changed since we've been on the scene, you know,
• 22:51
Speaker 2: to see that evolution. And then also I think personally
• 22:55
Speaker 2: for each comic, like as women, I feel that even
• 22:59
Speaker 2: more that you have such a you know, you have
• 23:02
Speaker 2: different periods of your life. I'm fifty one, I think
• 23:05
Speaker 2: you're sixty two now, right, yes, And like you're speaking
• 23:09
Speaker 2: of that, like you're talking a lot about the twins
• 23:11
Speaker 2: in this special. You're talking about them and they you know,
• 23:15
Speaker 2: you talk about spanking, you talk about what, you know,
• 23:17
Speaker 2: the impact that they've had on your life. But the
• 23:20
Speaker 2: fact that they're going to be out of the house soon.
• 23:21
Speaker 2: Probably they're going to go to college in a year
• 23:23
Speaker 2: or two years and a year, yeah, and a year.
• 23:26
Speaker 1: Are you looking forward to that period of time?
• 23:28
Speaker 5: You know what I am? And Alex got upset with
• 23:33
Speaker 5: me because I said that. I think I was on
• 23:35
Speaker 5: Jimmy Kevil or what are these shows? And I said,
• 23:40
Speaker 5: I'm excited about I'm looking forward to and she and
• 23:43
Speaker 5: that upset her because she I guess she took it
• 23:46
Speaker 5: as like I want the kids gone, But to me,
• 23:50
Speaker 5: it's like, yeah, I did you know we did it.
• 23:53
Speaker 5: We you know, we raised these kids and now they're
• 23:56
Speaker 5: equipped and they're ready to go to the next stage.
• 24:02
Speaker 5: And I love that idea, and also like the idea
• 24:06
Speaker 5: of the two of us back to just us. You know,
• 24:11
Speaker 5: where every night is date night. You know, it doesn't
• 24:15
Speaker 5: have to be all this. Okay, I gotta go do
• 24:18
Speaker 5: this and you got to drop this one off and whatever.
• 24:21
Speaker 5: I look forward to that.
• 24:22
Speaker 1: What if when both of the kids went off to school.
• 24:25
Speaker 2: What if in order to have the freedom that you desire,
• 24:28
Speaker 2: you had to spend one month, you and Alex had
• 24:31
Speaker 2: to spend one month.
• 24:32
Speaker 1: Living at your house.
• 24:33
Speaker 2: And you can choose one of these three people that
• 24:35
Speaker 2: would move in with you for just one month, and
• 24:38
Speaker 2: then you would be free of them for the rest
• 24:40
Speaker 2: of your life and the kid and then you could
• 24:42
Speaker 2: have your private time.
• 24:43
Speaker 1: I'll give you three options.
• 24:45
Speaker 2: Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Megan Kelly or Ivanka Trump. One of
• 24:54
Speaker 2: those three people has to live with you in order
• 24:56
Speaker 2: for your kids to have successful lives.
• 24:58
Speaker 1: That's the price you have to pay.
• 25:00
Speaker 2: They're going to go to college, they're gonna get jobs,
• 25:02
Speaker 2: and they're gonna be happy, high functioning adults.
• 25:05
Speaker 1: Who do you choose. Think about it, nightmare, blunt rotation,
• 25:11
  Speaker 1: nightmare blood.
• 25:13
Speaker 5: How bad would their lives be if I didn't do this?
• 25:17
Speaker 1: Bad bad. You don't know, and you can't risk it.
• 25:20
Speaker 1: You can't risk it. You have to choose one of
• 25:22
  Speaker 1: these women.
• 25:23
Speaker 5: Okay, I'm gonna I'm gonna go. I'm going to Vanka Trump.
• 25:30
Speaker 1: It's an interesting choice. Okay, and tell us why I think.
• 25:34
Speaker 5: I could break her in like two weeks, give me
• 25:38
Speaker 5: two weeks. I break her, and she's gonna tell me something.
• 25:43
Speaker 5: She's gonna give up something.
• 25:44
  Speaker 1: Yeah, she's what I'm saying.
• 25:46
Speaker 5: I'm gonna get something out of her. I really, I'm going.
• 25:49
Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah yeah. But you're not allowed to
• 25:52
Speaker 1: be physically violent with any of these people.
• 25:55
  Speaker 5: Oh, spiritual conversation.
• 25:57
Speaker 1: You can be spiritually violation.
• 26:00
  Speaker 5: No, no, no, I won't. I won't put my hands
• 26:02
Speaker 5: on it. Just conversation. Okay, I'll get something out of her,
• 26:07
  Speaker 5: all right.
• 26:07
Speaker 1: I like the choice of Ivanka Trovoice.
• 26:10
  Speaker 5: I'm a fine. I'm a fine. Out will all the
• 26:12
  Speaker 5: bodies are buried.
• 26:13
Speaker 2: Do you think she even knows where all the bodies
• 26:15
Speaker 2: are buried? I mean, I don't even think she knows
• 26:17
Speaker 2: what the fuck is going on. I mean with this
• 26:20
Speaker 2: whole Albania thing, it's like.
• 26:22
Speaker 5: Oh my god, she did that island. She did discovered
• 26:25
  Speaker 5: she Christopher Columbus.
• 26:30
Speaker 1: There was a cartoon.
• 26:31
Speaker 2: I don't know if you saw this on Instagram, but
• 26:34
Speaker 2: there was a cartoon of her swimming like that. You know,
• 26:36
Speaker 2: she tells the story like Albania wouldn't even have known
• 26:39
Speaker 2: that she bought that island if she hadn't done that interview.
• 26:42
Speaker 1: That's like some shit.
• 26:43
Speaker 2: I would both like I out myself before I get caught,
• 26:45
Speaker 2: you know. And and they did this cartoon of her
• 26:48
Speaker 2: swimming and then she swims to the island and they
• 26:51
Speaker 2: climbed to the top and they're like, I think we'll
• 26:52
Speaker 2: buy it. But what the Albanian people have done has
• 26:55
  Speaker 2: been inspirational.
• 26:57
Speaker 5: Oh beautiful, beautiful, Oh give yeah.
• 27:00
Speaker 2: And they're beautiful with the because people are going to Albedia,
• 27:03
Speaker 2: like you know, that's becoming a hotspot for travel.
• 27:06
Speaker 1: So I'm pretty proud of them.
• 27:07
Speaker 2: And they've inspired Americans because it seems like we're all
• 27:10
Speaker 2: sitting around with our thumbs up, our asses, looking around,
• 27:13
Speaker 2: going who's gonna tell us what to do next? And
• 27:15
Speaker 2: nobody seems to have any good ideas. Are you hopeful
• 27:18
Speaker 2: about the midterms, Wanda.
• 27:20
Speaker 5: I am, yeah, I am, I'm very hopeful. Yeah, especially now,
• 27:25
Speaker 5: and you know, people are finally speaking up. I mean,
• 27:29
Speaker 5: some Republicans are finally speaking up about this Iranian deal.
• 27:32
  Speaker 5: So but I am, I am, I am hopeful. I
• 27:35
Speaker 5: think people are just that've been hit so hard by everything,
• 27:39
Speaker 5: so they got they gotta vote, they gotta they got
• 27:42
Speaker 5: to step up. Yeah.
• 27:43
Speaker 2: And also I think that you know, all this jerrymandering stuff,
• 27:47
Speaker 2: like I really do think that's gonna kick back. There
• 27:50
Speaker 2: was a state today that voted against it, a Republican
• 27:52
Speaker 2: state legislature that said absolutely no to the jerrymandering. So like,
• 27:56
Speaker 2: I think that also is going to have some unintended,
• 27:59
Speaker 2: not positive consequences for the Republicans.
• 28:02
Speaker 1: And I think the people.
• 28:04
Speaker 2: That are real maga heads, like those people we just
• 28:06
Speaker 2: have to consider is mentally ill. They are exactly well,
• 28:10
Speaker 2: it's like racism, you're mentally Like when someone just described
• 28:13
Speaker 2: racism to me is mental illness, I was like that
• 28:15
Speaker 2: clicked in, and that applies to magas too. It's mental illness.
• 28:19
Speaker 2: So there's no cure. We can't help them. It's just
• 28:22
Speaker 2: that's the way it's going to be for them. And
• 28:24
Speaker 2: forget about those people and trying to flip them. That's pointless.
• 28:27
Speaker 2: And yeah, so are you in Philly?
• 28:30
Speaker 5: Oh, I'm Philly. When I met Alex she was living here.
• 28:33
Speaker 2: So Philly's a fun city. I mean, those people are
• 28:35
Speaker 2: fucking scared. I love sports games, Jesus.
• 28:38
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 28:39
Speaker 2: We tried to go to something there once and I
• 28:41
Speaker 2: was like, oh my god, this is a violent this
• 28:44
  Speaker 2: is violence.
• 28:44
Speaker 4: Get off the streets after the game.
• 28:47
Speaker 5: Yeah, we don't play about us sports.
• 28:49
Speaker 1: I know, I know which teams? Do you support?
• 28:52
Speaker 5: Sixers and Eagles? Yeah?
• 28:54
Speaker 1: Yeah, the Eagles are so fun. That is a great
• 28:56
  Speaker 1: team to support.
• 28:58
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 28:58
Speaker 1: And do you guys go to games and stuff?
• 29:00
Speaker 5: Yeah, we go to games and we're work. We worked
• 29:02
Speaker 5: on bringing a WNBA team to Philadelphia and that's going
• 29:07
Speaker 5: to happen in twenty thirty.
• 29:09
Speaker 2: Oh congratulations, that's fucking awesome.
• 29:12
  Speaker 8: Yeah.
• 29:13
Speaker 1: What's the name of the team, do you know?
• 29:15
Speaker 5: We don't know yet. We don't know yet. It's with
• 29:17
Speaker 5: the Sixers, in conjunction with you know, the Sixers are
• 29:20
Speaker 5: the ones who actually put the bid in. But we're
• 29:22
Speaker 5: with our group, the Philadelphia Sisters. We lobbied and we've
• 29:26
Speaker 5: been working on this thing for like years, like seven,
• 29:30
Speaker 5: it was before COVID, and we was working on this
• 29:33
Speaker 5: for a long time to get them to get a team.
• 29:37
Speaker 5: And we got a team.
• 29:38
  Speaker 3: Why.
• 29:38
Speaker 1: I fucking love that.
• 29:40
Speaker 2: Good for you, congrats, Thank you. We take a couple
• 29:47
Speaker 2: of callers and we give advice.
• 29:48
Speaker 1: Wanda, are you ready to do that?
• 29:50
  Speaker 2: Yeah?
• 29:51
Speaker 5: Oh sure, I'm great at this.
• 29:52
Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm sure you are.
• 29:53
Speaker 2: You have enough life experience and wisdom to shed some
• 29:56
Speaker 2: light on some situations.
• 29:57
Speaker 4: Yes, you know what. We're gonna start with Kelly.
• 30:02
Speaker 3: Kelly, Uh, she's just writing in, but she says, Dear Chelsea,
• 30:07
Speaker 3: I a twenty nine year old black female, have been
• 30:09
Speaker 3: dating a guy thirty one and notably white.
• 30:11
Speaker 4: For about two years, and it's twenty two.
• 30:15
Speaker 3: That's come to light that his parents are social and
• 30:18
Speaker 3: political idiots who are incapable of critical thinking.
• 30:21
Speaker 4: That's right, you guessed it. They're mega vegetables.
• 30:24
Speaker 3: It seems as if they think I'm some sort of
• 30:26
Speaker 3: Candice Owen's aberration to their racist philosophies. Yet they're never
• 30:30
Speaker 3: comfortable overtly discussing politics when he and I are around.
• 30:34
Speaker 3: My boyfriend also seems to have gotten the short end
• 30:36
Speaker 3: of the evolutionary stick, because he finds it's imperative to
• 30:39
Speaker 3: still spend holidays with them, as if it's no big deal.
• 30:42
Speaker 3: Two to five times a year, I'm talking spending the
• 30:45
Speaker 3: night at their home when we visit, having hour long,
• 30:47
Speaker 3: forced topical conversations about shit like beer. I'm unable to
• 30:51
Speaker 3: continue faking the funk. And he seems to think that
• 30:54
Speaker 3: spending time with his folks is an unsavory yet umbilical
• 30:57
Speaker 3: facet of the relationship. Otherwise we're extremely compatible. But also,
• 31:01
Speaker 3: I'm young and hot. I need to get out.
• 31:03
Speaker 4: Of here if there's going to be no return on
• 31:05
Speaker 4: investment of my youth.
• 31:07
Speaker 1: Help Kelly get out, Kelly, get out of there. Anyone.
• 31:12
Speaker 2: I like the way she termed that biblical, I don't
• 31:14
Speaker 2: know that good use of of of a word in
• 31:18
Speaker 2: that sense. I would say to get out of that situation,
• 31:21
  Speaker 2: because anyone who I don't.
• 31:24
  Speaker 1: I mean, you've.
• 31:24
Speaker 2: Dealt with your in laws, but your in laws are
• 31:26
  Speaker 2: probably cool because they're French, right, Yeah, that's that's that's
• 31:30
Speaker 2: not the same thing. But I don't think when somebody
• 31:33
Speaker 2: has that kind of relationship that that obligatory relationship where
• 31:38
Speaker 2: they want to spend three to five holidays. I mean,
• 31:40
Speaker 2: as as soon as we're adults, that's enough with that stuff,
• 31:43
Speaker 2: like you don't have to spend Christmas, Thanksgiving and all.
• 31:46
Speaker 2: How many I didn't even know there are five spending
• 31:48
Speaker 2: flag dating world age life.
• 31:51
  Speaker 1: That's too much.
• 31:52
  Speaker 6: Ye?
• 31:53
Speaker 5: Well, she said three to she said what two to
• 31:55
Speaker 5: five times? Yeah a year, five times a year. All right,
• 32:01
Speaker 5: let's let's let's work with it, because because we can
• 32:04
Speaker 5: save this man. You know, that's a she's gonna get
• 32:09
Speaker 5: a good white man on our side, you know what
• 32:12
Speaker 5: I'm saying. Okay, okay, if she dumps them, he might
• 32:17
  Speaker 5: go back.
• 32:17
Speaker 1: Right right, right right.
• 32:19
  Speaker 2: That's a good angle. That's why you're here, Wanda. Thank
• 32:21
Speaker 2: you for that insight.
• 32:22
Speaker 5: You know. But to me, if she is really into him,
• 32:27
Speaker 5: why don't she just negotiate. Look, I'm gonna make one
• 32:29
Speaker 5: trip a year to spend with your dumb parents, and
• 32:34
Speaker 5: the other times you you know, you go on your own.
• 32:37
Speaker 5: And I mean, I'm sure she has family that she
• 32:39
Speaker 5: wants to go see, right yeah, yeah, so yeah, so
• 32:44
Speaker 5: let him go see his family. She goes see her family,
• 32:48
Speaker 5: she can talk shit about his parents to her family.
• 32:51
  Speaker 1: That's right. That's a good solution. It's to compromise.
• 32:54
Speaker 2: And even if and if for some reason she doesn't
• 32:56
Speaker 2: have family, then you can go celebrate those holidays with
• 32:59
Speaker 2: your friend or take some mushrooms and celebrate them alone
• 33:02
Speaker 2: like I do every fucking Christmas without my family. So
• 33:05
Speaker 2: that's that's those are several options are on the table.
• 33:08
Speaker 3: And I think when whenever she does go, he has
• 33:11
Speaker 3: to make a donation to like some liberal cause like
• 33:14
Speaker 3: an abortion fund or something.
• 33:16
  Speaker 5: Absolutely.
• 33:16
Speaker 2: Yeah, speaking of which, Wanda, I heard you talking about
• 33:20
Speaker 2: the roast and that you were so glad you didn't
• 33:22
  Speaker 2: do it.
• 33:23
  Speaker 1: I mean, I just want.
• 33:24
Speaker 2: To reiterate how glad you must be that you didn't
• 33:29
  Speaker 2: do it.
• 33:30
Speaker 1: Oh my god, were you tempted at all to do it?
• 33:34
Speaker 5: I was because I thought I was going to be
• 33:36
Speaker 5: able to go in and then just get out, and
• 33:40
Speaker 5: they were like, no, you have to stay for the
• 33:42
Speaker 5: whole thing and and be on it on the dais
• 33:45
  Speaker 5: And I was like, I can't do that, man, I
• 33:48
  Speaker 5: can't do it.
• 33:49
Speaker 1: But you did great, you really did, oh, thank you?
• 33:52
Speaker 5: Yeah? Yeah you and Cheryl I thought he had the
• 33:55
  Speaker 5: best set.
• 33:55
  Speaker 1: Thank you.
• 33:56
Speaker 5: I mean, yeah, shot into it and it wasn't just lazy,
• 34:01
Speaker 5: you know, just whatever you're short. It was really good. Bravo,
• 34:06
  Speaker 5: thank you.
• 34:07
Speaker 2: What was the reason you did? You couldn't you because
• 34:09
Speaker 2: you just couldn't sit there on the dais with those
• 34:11
Speaker 2: guys for three hours? Or is there a different Yeah?
• 34:14
Speaker 5: Because I knew. I knew what it was going to be, yes,
• 34:16
Speaker 5: you know, and I knew where it was going. I
• 34:18
Speaker 5: knew it was going to be. And I was like,
• 34:20
Speaker 5: somebody's gonna say something real dumb and real ugly, and
• 34:25
Speaker 5: either I'm going to get up and walk out and
• 34:27
Speaker 5: knock shit over, or you know, I'm gonna, you know,
• 34:32
Speaker 5: beat Kevin, you know. Uh, but no I love Kevin.
• 34:36
Speaker 5: I got no I got no beef with Kevin at all.
• 34:38
Speaker 1: Yeah, Kevin's pretty easy to love.
• 34:41
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 34:41
Speaker 3: Yeah, Well, our first caller today is Tea and he
• 34:48
Speaker 3: says the subject line is black and buy.
• 34:50
Speaker 4: I guess, Dear Chelsea.
• 34:52
Speaker 3: I'm a twenty eight year old guy living in Southeast Texas,
• 34:55
Speaker 3: born and raised to cut to the chase. I'm a
• 34:57
Speaker 3: queer identifying black man who's never actually dated or sexually
• 35:00
Speaker 3: been involved with men.
• 35:01
  Speaker 4: I know, weird, but I'm sure I don't date much.
• 35:05
Speaker 3: But There's been a couple of girls here and there,
• 35:07
Speaker 3: some of which were in high school, which I don't
• 35:08
Speaker 3: really count as real relationships.
• 35:10
Speaker 4: When people hear me speak or see.
• 35:12
Speaker 3: How I socialize with others, especially women, the question of
• 35:15
Speaker 3: is he gay always comes up, maybe because I'm not
• 35:17
Speaker 3: a fucking creep. I've noticed since I was fourteen that
• 35:20
Speaker 3: I wasn't completely hetero, but who is? But labels feel
• 35:23
Speaker 3: restrictive not to mention being a black man raised in
• 35:26
Speaker 3: the South and how that plays a part in existing
• 35:28
Speaker 3: as a man. But I do a pretty good job
• 35:30
Speaker 3: of not succumbing to the woes of toxic masculinity. I
• 35:33
Speaker 3: don't hide my sexuality, but I'm also not screaming it
• 35:35
Speaker 3: from the rooftop. Now I want to actually explore dating guys,
• 35:39
Speaker 3: since I've never dipped my foot into that pool. But
• 35:41
Speaker 3: like I've mentioned, I don't date much. I'm almost hyper independent.
• 35:45
Speaker 3: I enjoy my piece too much to let anyone ruin that.
• 35:47
Speaker 3: But I know if I found the right person or people,
• 35:49
Speaker 3: I could have something really nice and better than what
• 35:51
Speaker 3: I enjoy now. The apps are terribly exhausting, and I
• 35:54
Speaker 3: think one reason I've not dated men is because the
• 35:56
Speaker 3: ones around here are absolutely unbearably terrible, whether they're Republican,
• 36:01
Speaker 3: DL synonymous, or just plain boring. I tend to lose
• 36:04
Speaker 3: interest pretty fast, but I don't know if this is
• 36:07
Speaker 3: genuine disinterest or some latent self inflicted homophobia. What's your
• 36:11
Speaker 3: advice for a bye guy living in Texas that wants
• 36:14
Speaker 3: to enter the world of gay dating for the first
• 36:15
Speaker 3: time at twenty eight? And what advice do you have
• 36:18
Speaker 3: for me when the inevitable you're twenty eight and have
• 36:20
Speaker 3: never dated a guy comes up?
• 36:22
Speaker 5: T Hi ta hi, Hi.
• 36:25
Speaker 2: Ladies, this is Wanda Psychs our special guest today.
• 36:31
  Speaker 5: How you doing.
• 36:31
Speaker 8: It's so nice to meet all of you. I can't
• 36:35
Speaker 8: even say how starstruck I am right now.
• 36:41
Speaker 5: See what part of Texas are you in.
• 36:44
Speaker 7: I'm about an hour outside of Houston.
• 36:47
Speaker 8: Okay, it's not like really big, but it's not like
• 36:50
  Speaker 8: super small either.
• 36:52
Speaker 5: Dallas is pretty, you know, popping as far as in
• 36:55
Speaker 5: the queer community. But I think you know, good Atlanta
• 37:00
  Speaker 5: for a weekend. I think I think you'll find out
• 37:05
Speaker 5: real quickly which you know what floatshi you're into?
• 37:10
  Speaker 2: I think, right, I think that's a great idea of
• 37:13
  Speaker 2: solid idea.
• 37:14
Speaker 1: Yes, have you been to Atlanta, tea.
• 37:17
Speaker 7: I have not been to it.
• 37:19
Speaker 5: Oh boy, no, I've definitely it is gay overload.
• 37:25
Speaker 8: Yeah, I've been to Dallas a couple of times. I
• 37:28
Speaker 8: actually went with a couple of friends maybe two or
• 37:31
Speaker 8: three years ago, and I was actually super surprised about
• 37:34
Speaker 8: how how queer the place is. But yeah, you don't
• 37:38
Speaker 8: have to tell me how gay Atlanta is. You hear
• 37:40
Speaker 8: about it all the time.
• 37:41
Speaker 1: Absolutely, But I definitely think it's worth a trip.
• 37:45
Speaker 2: I think that's a serious, good piece of advice because
• 37:48
Speaker 2: it is good to go, especially like get outside of
• 37:50
Speaker 2: your community and check out what you're into and find,
• 37:54
Speaker 2: you know, spend a long weekend there.
• 37:55
Speaker 1: I'm going to Dallas for a show.
• 37:57
Speaker 2: You would come. My niece goes to Emory Universe in Atlanta.
• 38:01
Speaker 2: Will take you out. She'll know where the gay bars
• 38:03
Speaker 2: are and where to go if you want to do that.
• 38:06
Speaker 2: I'm serious, we would take you out and do that
• 38:08
Speaker 2: because there's no thing I love more than shepherding somebody
• 38:12
Speaker 2: into their gayness. But also, I don't want you to
• 38:15
Speaker 2: think of twenty eight years old as like like that's
• 38:18
  Speaker 2: an embarrassment.
• 38:19
Speaker 1: I think you should flip the script.
• 38:20
Speaker 2: I think you should flip the script on that, Like,
• 38:22
Speaker 2: you should look at that as I've been waiting until
• 38:26
Speaker 2: I've whole adult man, and waiting until I'm mature enough
• 38:30
Speaker 2: to be in a relationship and a romantic relationship and
• 38:34
Speaker 2: to be sure of what it is I'm looking for.
• 38:36
Speaker 2: So there's an advantage for you not having to have
• 38:40
Speaker 2: been through all the drama and all the noise and
• 38:43
Speaker 2: ugliness that relationships can bring when you're kind of too
• 38:45
Speaker 2: young and immature to really.
• 38:48
Speaker 1: Know what you're doing.
• 38:50
Speaker 2: So first I would start with that, you know what
• 38:53
Speaker 2: I mean, like, flip the script on that.
• 38:55
Speaker 7: Yeah, I and I completely agree.
• 38:58
Speaker 8: It's more it is more along the lines of, you know,
• 39:01
Speaker 8: I needed to, like I guess, find myself you know
• 39:06
Speaker 8: before uh, you know, just throwing myself into something just
• 39:09
Speaker 8: because you know, some people don't like to be alone
• 39:11
Speaker 8: or you know, some people have to be in a
• 39:12
Speaker 8: relationship or anything like that.
• 39:15
Speaker 7: But yeah, like I just I really like.
• 39:17
Speaker 8: The you know, the peace and the the lack of
• 39:21
Speaker 8: drama that comes with being single. But you know, not
• 39:24
Speaker 8: that it gets old, but you know, there are some
• 39:27
Speaker 8: things that you know you'd like to share with people,
• 39:29
Speaker 8: and you know, being in a relationship kind of gives
• 39:33
Speaker 8: you that like built in person I guess to do
• 39:35
Speaker 8: those things with. But yeah, no, I completely agree with
• 39:39
Speaker 8: you guys with with that. And I have been doing
• 39:42
Speaker 8: like a bit more traveling this like past like a
• 39:47
Speaker 8: year or so. I was talking to Catherine a couple
• 39:50
Speaker 8: of days ago. I'll be actually going on a cruise.
• 39:53
Speaker 7: I think we leave Saturday.
• 39:56
  Speaker 1: There you go.
• 39:59
  Speaker 7: Right, yeah exactly.
• 40:00
Speaker 8: So yeah, I mean, yeah, I'm excited and I think
• 40:03
Speaker 8: doing some traveling, especially to cities as you know queer's
• 40:08
Speaker 8: Atlanta and Dallas are is definitely like pretty pretty solid
• 40:12
  Speaker 8: and good advice.
• 40:13
Speaker 4: Do you have like very many queer friendships where you
• 40:16
  Speaker 4: live now?
• 40:18
Speaker 7: Yeah, like I have a couple of queer friends.
• 40:21
Speaker 8: I'm honestly most of my friends are probably like by
• 40:24
Speaker 8: but yeah, like it's pretty good, and we're all kind
• 40:29
Speaker 8: of in the same boat of like we're pretty much
• 40:31
Speaker 8: like around my same age. But like the dating scene
• 40:34
Speaker 8: around here is just you know, it's not Dallas or
• 40:37
Speaker 8: or something like that, so it's more of just like,
• 40:40
Speaker 8: you know, if you can find that that diamond in
• 40:43
Speaker 8: the rough, I guess, like you know, you're a really
• 40:45
Speaker 8: lucky one. But not to say that there's like none
• 40:48
Speaker 8: around here. It's just like, you know, you have to
• 40:49
Speaker 8: find someone or someone's you know that kind of fits
• 40:54
Speaker 8: what you're looking for.
• 40:56
Speaker 1: Well, you're super adorable, Yeah.
• 40:58
Speaker 5: Yes, thank you. Have any problems look at that smile?
• 41:02
Speaker 7: Yeah, thank you so much.
• 41:04
Speaker 2: Yeah. And I think just even getting to a place
• 41:06
Speaker 2: in your life where you're just saying it out loud
• 41:09
Speaker 2: and you know, calling into a podcast about it and
• 41:12
Speaker 2: expressing like the desires and what you actually want in life,
• 41:15
Speaker 2: those are really important things to actually say out loud
• 41:19
Speaker 2: and go after and be proactive about.
• 41:21
Speaker 1: So like, you know, take these trips, keep talking.
• 41:24
Speaker 2: About it, and then you know, go on, have you
• 41:26
Speaker 2: been on these apps and stuff? Because I think one
• 41:29
Speaker 2: of the good things about these apps is that you
• 41:31
Speaker 2: can be so specific about what you are looking for
• 41:34
Speaker 2: where you can kind of cut the trash out, you know,
• 41:37
Speaker 2: like if you tell somebody like this is exactly what
• 41:40
Speaker 2: you know, this is what I want. I don't want
• 41:41
Speaker 2: anyone with kids, or I want somebody who's also by.
• 41:44
Speaker 2: I want somebody who's never been with you know, whatever
• 41:47
Speaker 2: your specifications are, you can say that on an app.
• 41:50
Speaker 2: And that's a nice thing that while apps have their
• 41:54
Speaker 2: own set of problems, that's one of the advantages that
• 41:57
Speaker 2: you can kind of cut out all the noise with
• 41:59
  Speaker 2: your spell sifications.
• 42:02
Speaker 7: Yeah, I've definitely been on the apps.
• 42:05
Speaker 8: I probably I delete them on and off every now
• 42:09
Speaker 8: and then. I don't currently have them my phone now,
• 42:12
Speaker 8: but I have been, you know, kind of getting that
• 42:15
  Speaker 8: itch of.
• 42:15
Speaker 7: Like maybe should I download it again to see what's
• 42:17
Speaker 7: going on? So yeah, maybe I'll hop back in.
• 42:20
Speaker 8: It's and it's not really I guess, you know, not
• 42:24
Speaker 8: to like give myself a big hit or anything, but
• 42:26
Speaker 8: it's not really hard to like find people to match with.
• 42:29
Speaker 8: It's just you know, the I guess keeping it going
• 42:32
Speaker 8: is kind of hard, like I'm not like a ghoster,
• 42:36
Speaker 8: but you know, maybe a little like phantom move about
• 42:40
Speaker 8: if things aren't really like you know, picking up or
• 42:44
Speaker 8: like you can't really see them, you know, going anywhere.
• 42:46
Speaker 7: But yeah, no, I'll probably have to give the apps
• 42:48
  Speaker 7: another try again.
• 42:49
Speaker 3: I like Chelsea's original idea, which is get out to
• 42:52
Speaker 3: a gay bar. Like gay bars are closing across the country, like.
• 42:57
Speaker 7: Within like a hundred mile radius of me.
• 42:59
Speaker 8: I'm pretty sure you share in Houston, but like maybe
• 43:02
Speaker 8: in Houston is like the only place I can think of.
• 43:05
Speaker 1: There's going to be a gay bar in Houston.
• 43:06
  Speaker 2: There has I mean, I wouldn't be performing in a
• 43:11
Speaker 2: city that didn't have gay bars, so that's just like
• 43:13
  Speaker 2: not even.
• 43:14
Speaker 1: Yeah, so you got to go to I mean that's important.
• 43:16
Speaker 2: Also, it's also important to meet people like you know,
• 43:19
Speaker 2: whether it's romantic or not. You want to meet people
• 43:21
Speaker 2: in your community and build a community, absolutely yeah, So
• 43:25
Speaker 2: be proactive about it that way.
• 43:26
Speaker 1: And also are you on Instagram?
• 43:29
Speaker 2: Absolutely yeah, yeah, so that you can geo target people
• 43:32
Speaker 2: and like look for people in your area, you know,
• 43:35
Speaker 2: and then you can hit people up on dms.
• 43:38
Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a nice way to meet people, especially.
• 43:40
Speaker 2: If you're not like you know, for anonymous people who
• 43:42
Speaker 2: are like living you get slide into someone's DMS and
• 43:44
Speaker 2: be like, oh, I love your profile, do you you
• 43:46
Speaker 2: know if do you ever want to do something like
• 43:48
Speaker 2: you see you know, you look at the vibe of
• 43:50
Speaker 2: what they are. But you know, there's all different ways
• 43:52
Speaker 2: to do it, but I love being basically in person
• 43:55
Speaker 2: is a lost art and people need to you know,
• 43:57
Speaker 2: double down on that a because big gay bar are
• 44:00
Speaker 2: closing down all the time, and we need to keep
• 44:02
Speaker 2: them open and we need to give them business, so
• 44:04
Speaker 2: keep that in mind also when you're doing this, and yeah,
• 44:07
Speaker 2: just to build your community.
• 44:08
Speaker 1: You just want to build.
• 44:09
Speaker 2: I love that you have friends that are in the
• 44:11
Speaker 2: same kind of situation as you, and that you guys
• 44:13
Speaker 2: are like figuring it out together. That's great that you
• 44:16
Speaker 2: have like a support system, so to speak. So just
• 44:20
Speaker 2: keep doing that, but be very proactive about putting yourself
• 44:23
  Speaker 2: out there.
• 44:24
Speaker 7: Yeah, thank you so much.
• 44:26
Speaker 8: I got to get my biposter, even got to rate
• 44:28
Speaker 8: a couple of gay bars.
• 44:29
Speaker 2: I guess, yes, the next step and seriously look at
• 44:34
Speaker 2: my tour schedule on my Instagram when I'm Atlanta. In Atlanta,
• 44:38
Speaker 2: if you want to come that weekend, they are always
• 44:41
Speaker 2: gay men at my shows. There are and hit Catherine
• 44:45
Speaker 2: up and we'll coordinate tickets for you and everything.
• 44:48
Speaker 7: I will definitely do that. Okay, thank you so much.
• 44:51
Speaker 1: Y Spiculadies with Pleasure guy. Yeah, thanks t go get
• 44:55
Speaker 1: it to you. You're so cute.
• 44:58
Speaker 7: Thank you so much. Guys. Yeah, I'm a good one.
• 45:02
Speaker 1: Okay, bye bye bye.
• 45:06
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 45:06
Speaker 4: I love him. He's just so sweet.
• 45:08
Speaker 1: It's cute, so cute.
• 45:09
Speaker 3: He's gonna do great, He's gonna do just fine. What
• 45:17
Speaker 3: our next caller is Meg, and she says, happily laid off.
• 45:21
Speaker 4: But now what, dear Chelsea, I'm Meg.
• 45:24
Speaker 3: I'm fifty one, a pice. He's born in nineteen seventy five,
• 45:26
Speaker 3: just like you. I live outside Philadelphia, and I was
• 45:31
Speaker 3: just laid off from an amazing company that I truly
• 45:33
Speaker 3: felt like I would spend the rest of my career with.
• 45:35
Speaker 3: It was an amazing place to work until it wasn't
• 45:38
Speaker 3: new leadership and it all went south.
• 45:39
  Speaker 4: Here's the thing.
• 45:40
Speaker 3: I'm not devastated. I'm relieved I can finally breathe again.
• 45:44
Speaker 3: And that's the part that's keeping me up at night.
• 45:46
Speaker 3: I've had a good career, and what has genuinely brought
• 45:48
Speaker 3: me joy. The part I do for free is leading people,
• 45:51
Speaker 3: mentoring women early in their careers, watching someone who didn't
• 45:55
Speaker 3: believe in herself figure out that she's actually brilliant, teaching
• 45:58
Speaker 3: women to be bold and wrong and have their voices heard.
• 46:01
Speaker 3: That has always been the best part of the job,
• 46:03
Speaker 3: and I've quietly wondered if there's a version of my
• 46:05
  Speaker 3: life where that's not just a sidebar. I have a
• 46:08
Speaker 3: teenage daughter watching every move. I make a list of
• 46:11
Speaker 3: life projects. I keep deferring and a bit of runway
• 46:13
Speaker 3: thanks to savings and a supportive spouse.
• 46:16
Speaker 4: I want to show my daughter.
• 46:17
Speaker 3: That you don't have to stay on a path just
• 46:18
Speaker 3: because you've already walked most of it, that reinvention isn't
• 46:21
Speaker 3: just for your twenties, that it's actually braver to start
• 46:24
Speaker 3: over at fifty one than it ever was at twenty five.
• 46:27
Speaker 3: I don't want to just find another job. I want
• 46:29
Speaker 3: to find the right next chapter. So Chelsea, you're fifty one,
• 46:32
Speaker 3: You've done this and you don't sugarcoat anything, which is
• 46:34
Speaker 3: why I need your help.
• 46:36
  Speaker 5: Meg.
• 46:38
Speaker 1: Hi, Meg, Hi, Hi. This is Wanda Sykes, our special guests.
• 46:42
Speaker 5: Hi, Wanda, I'm met.
• 46:45
Speaker 1: I loved your letter.
• 46:46
Speaker 2: I think that is really empowering, and you could tell
• 46:49
Speaker 2: that you're a woman who empowers other women by everything
• 46:52
Speaker 2: you wrote and wanting to demonstrate that for your daughter.
• 46:55
Speaker 2: So I don't know what's the problem, Like, yes, you should,
• 46:58
Speaker 2: you should reinvent yours and do something.
• 47:01
Speaker 1: Do you know what you want to do? Is that
• 47:02
  Speaker 1: what you're asking?
• 47:05
  Speaker 2: You?
• 47:05
  Speaker 8: Know?
• 47:05
Speaker 6: I've thought a lot about it. I wrote the letter
• 47:08
Speaker 6: like six weeks ago, so I've had more time to
• 47:11
Speaker 6: think about it, and.
• 47:12
Speaker 9: I mean the more time that's gone by.
• 47:14
Speaker 6: The more, I'm like, I definitely don't feel like going
• 47:17
Speaker 6: back to what I was doing.
• 47:18
Speaker 9: It was it was great.
• 47:20
Speaker 6: It was a career, but it's not like passion in
• 47:24
Speaker 6: terms of like the industry and stuff like that.
• 47:26
Speaker 9: But what I really love.
• 47:28
Speaker 6: Is just being a role model and like being a
• 47:31
Speaker 6: person that like I had a lot of earlier career
• 47:34
Speaker 6: women that were on my team.
• 47:36
Speaker 9: And they just they always just like.
• 47:39
Speaker 6: Came to me for every every kind of problem, every
• 47:42
Speaker 6: kind of challenge, and I always, you know, just.
• 47:44
Speaker 9: Really felt like I could, I could figure out the
• 47:47
Speaker 9: right words to help them and to lead them.
• 47:50
Speaker 6: So I just I think about that, and that's like
• 47:53
Speaker 6: I haven't been doing that too much, and that's what
• 47:55
Speaker 6: I missed the most, my girls.
• 47:57
  Speaker 9: And yeah, I.
• 47:59
Speaker 6: Just I I kind of am trying to figure out,
• 48:01
Speaker 6: like what can I do that's maybe leadership focused. But
• 48:05
Speaker 6: then I also like have a lot of different passions
• 48:08
Speaker 6: in life. I love to travel, I love to ski,
• 48:10
Speaker 6: I love to you know, be with my family. So
• 48:13
Speaker 6: I'm like, how can I like do all that and
• 48:15
  Speaker 6: make money?
• 48:16
  Speaker 5: I don't know, easily.
• 48:17
Speaker 2: So easily, first of all, you have the whole world
• 48:20
Speaker 2: at your fingertips, like you have such a luxury that
• 48:22
Speaker 2: you're talking about right now, you financially able to do that.
• 48:25
Speaker 1: Most people are not.
• 48:27
Speaker 2: You have a daughter that like this is a very
• 48:29
Speaker 2: exciting time, so like that you should be really excited.
• 48:33
Speaker 2: Definitely if you can get rid of that job that
• 48:35
Speaker 2: you're not passionate about, get rid of it. The most
• 48:37
Speaker 2: exciting thing I felt when I turned fifty was like
• 48:40
Speaker 2: I was so scared of turning fifty, thinking it was like,
• 48:43
Speaker 2: not so scared, but I kind of was like I
• 48:46
Speaker 2: wasn't excited. And then I turned fifty, and it was
• 48:48
Speaker 2: like this brand new excitement, Like.
• 48:51
Speaker 1: It was like a whole reset.
• 48:53
Speaker 2: I don't know if you felt that way Wanda at
• 48:55
Speaker 2: fifty or sixty, but I feel like every decade gives
• 48:58
Speaker 2: us like we're still here, We've got all of our
• 49:02
Speaker 2: shit together, Like we're the reason we got ourselves to
• 49:05
Speaker 2: the position we're in, so we've got receipts to show
• 49:08
Speaker 2: how competent and capable we are.
• 49:11
Speaker 1: And then like you have a.
• 49:13
Speaker 2: Whole new like chapter, it's very exciting, and you kind
• 49:17
Speaker 2: of you're smarter than you've ever been. You have more
• 49:19
Speaker 2: wisdom than you've ever had, and you have more life
• 49:21
Speaker 2: experience than you ever had. The world is your oyster.
• 49:24
Speaker 2: You can figure out a way to mentor young girls
• 49:27
Speaker 2: or business women or however you want to do it easily.
• 49:30
Speaker 2: That's not going to be hard for you to figure out.
• 49:32
  Speaker 2: You've done it before, and there's everybody. I mean, that's
• 49:35
Speaker 2: pretty much the most worthwhile thing I can think of
• 49:37
Speaker 2: doing would be helping other people succeed, you know, so
• 49:42
Speaker 2: I think you should totally like get running in that direction.
• 49:45
Speaker 2: You seem completely competent in knowing what you're good at,
• 49:49
Speaker 2: and that's kind of like, you know, the thing that
• 49:52
Speaker 2: people call in hear the most about is not knowing
• 49:55
Speaker 2: which direction to go in and not knowing what they
• 49:57
Speaker 2: even feel passionate about.
• 49:59
Speaker 1: And you have all of the answers.
• 50:01
Speaker 2: So it's just about taking steps in that direction, don't
• 50:05
  Speaker 2: you think, Wanda?
• 50:06
Speaker 5: Absolutely absolutely. You know, I had a real job before
• 50:10
Speaker 5: I got into comedy. I worked at NSA, but I
• 50:14
Speaker 5: just knew it was something else that I was supposed
• 50:16
Speaker 5: to be doing. But I you know, left the job
• 50:20
Speaker 5: to pursue comedy because that's what I'm passionate about. I
• 50:24
Speaker 5: think you you know, you know what you the parts
• 50:28
Speaker 5: of your job which gave you gave you joy. You
• 50:30
Speaker 5: said that was helping other women. There's so many nonprofits
• 50:34
Speaker 5: out here with who could absolutely you know, use someone
• 50:39
Speaker 5: like you need someone like you. There's like women I
• 50:43
Speaker 5: actually I met this woman last night. She runs a
• 50:46
Speaker 5: program for women who are just coming out of jail,
• 50:49
Speaker 5: out of out of prison. Yeah, I mean if that's
• 50:52
Speaker 5: not you know, that makes you uncomfortable whatever, But still
• 50:55
Speaker 5: there's there's so many programs of like nonprofits who need that.
• 51:00
Speaker 5: Who can you know, give young women a path just
• 51:04
Speaker 5: to just to point them in the right direction as
• 51:06
Speaker 5: far as you know, how they can get their you know,
• 51:09
Speaker 5: life together, help them with the resumes or whatever to
• 51:13
Speaker 5: get them you know, back up and into society. So yeah,
• 51:17
Speaker 5: or you know, it's like you said, just career advice.
• 51:21
Speaker 5: I'm sure, especially when you come out of college, you
• 51:24
Speaker 5: don't know what you really want to do unless you're
• 51:27
Speaker 5: you know, going for that hard science you know, doctor
• 51:30
Speaker 5: or lawyer whatever. But it's yeah, I mean it's for
• 51:34
Speaker 5: someone just to sit down and talk with young women
• 51:37
Speaker 5: about what they want to do and and also to
• 51:40
Speaker 5: help them find what they're passionate about. You know, it
• 51:44
Speaker 5: can save a lot of people a lot of headaches
• 51:49
Speaker 5: get going down a path and getting stuck in the job.
• 51:51
Speaker 5: But they're like, oh God, where this is. This can't
• 51:54
Speaker 5: be the rest of my life, you know.
• 51:55
Speaker 9: Yeah, Yeah, I loved my career.
• 51:57
Speaker 6: I loved what I did, and you know, I learned
• 51:59
Speaker 6: so much had I not had all that life experience.
• 52:01
Speaker 6: And I kind of was like definitely always a person
• 52:04
Speaker 6: that just like jumped in, rolled at my sleeves, got
• 52:06
Speaker 6: the job done, whatever needed to be done. And I've
• 52:08
Speaker 6: always kind of taken that attitude. But you know, now
• 52:11
Speaker 6: I'm like, how can I how can I really put
• 52:15
Speaker 6: like pen to paper and say, like where where do
• 52:18
  Speaker 6: I start?
• 52:19
Speaker 9: Like I guess that's where I'm kind of struggling.
• 52:21
Speaker 6: Like I know in my in my heart like what
• 52:24
Speaker 6: brings me joy and what makes me happy?
• 52:26
Speaker 9: But I'm kind of like, all right, how do I
• 52:29
  Speaker 9: how do I find that? And I guess that's that's
• 52:31
Speaker 9: kind of where I where I am right now.
• 52:33
Speaker 3: I feel like you, your vibe is high, and I
• 52:36
Speaker 3: think if you can continue to maintain that high vibe
• 52:39
Speaker 3: and keep like looking and searching, the right thing is
• 52:42
Speaker 3: going to come to you, whether that's looking online at
• 52:44
Speaker 3: different jobs, networking with women's groups, women entrepreneur groups or
• 52:48
  Speaker 3: women's business groups.
• 52:49
  Speaker 1: And mentoring opportunities.
• 52:51
Speaker 2: Yeah, just go online and look up mentoring opportunities because
• 52:54
Speaker 2: I'm sure you're going to run into a bunch of
• 52:55
Speaker 2: things you didn't even know existed. There's so many career
• 52:58
Speaker 2: coaching I mean, all my friends that are CEOs have
• 53:01
Speaker 2: like career coaches, and that might not sound appealing to you,
• 53:05
Speaker 2: but like there's a coach for everything, And if you're
• 53:07
Speaker 2: a motivational type of person, there's people that are gonna
• 53:10
Speaker 2: need help with, you know, whatever you're willing to do
• 53:13
Speaker 2: in terms of like whether it is for a nonprofit
• 53:16
Speaker 2: or if it's or if it is something where you
• 53:18
Speaker 2: need to get paid, Like you just have to start
• 53:20
Speaker 2: putting your foot forward in that direction.
• 53:23
Speaker 1: And when you get off this call, like really sit.
• 53:25
Speaker 2: Down and write down what it would look like for
• 53:28
Speaker 2: you in to mentor like what are you looking to do?
• 53:31
Speaker 2: Do you want to mentor people personally professionally like a
• 53:34
Speaker 2: life coach? Like what it is you are, like write
• 53:37
Speaker 2: it all down so that you can really kind of
• 53:39
Speaker 2: like have time to think about what is the most
• 53:42
Speaker 2: appealing part about that job for you and what you
• 53:45
Speaker 2: excel at and I think that you'll get a clearer
• 53:48
Speaker 2: idea the more you keep kind of being introspective and
• 53:51
Speaker 2: like really sitting with all of that.
• 53:54
  Speaker 4: Yeah, I agree.
• 53:54
Speaker 3: There's something magical when you write stuff down, almost as
• 53:59
Speaker 3: if it's already happened, Like this is what my dream
• 54:03
Speaker 3: job looks like, these are the elements that it has,
• 54:05
Speaker 3: this is where it's located, and get really specific about
• 54:08
Speaker 3: what you want that it just like helps that crystallize
• 54:12
  Speaker 3: and materialize.
• 54:12
Speaker 4: I know it seems woo woo, but it really does work.
• 54:15
Speaker 6: No, And you always talk about journaling and right, and
• 54:17
  Speaker 6: I'm you know, I always feel like I open a
• 54:20
Speaker 6: book and I'm like, Okay, I have it.
• 54:21
Speaker 9: All in my head, but where do I start?
• 54:23
Speaker 6: So I just need to, like like I said, they
• 54:25
Speaker 6: put pen to paper and just try to get some
• 54:26
Speaker 6: words out. And you know, I've done a lot of
• 54:29
Speaker 6: writing in my in my career, so I should be
• 54:31
Speaker 6: able to do that.
• 54:33
Speaker 2: Yeah, but you're gonna be great. Everything's gonna be great
• 54:36
Speaker 2: for you. I can already tell good.
• 54:38
Speaker 5: Yeah. Even that you like to ski, put together some
• 54:42
  Speaker 5: ski victor. Yeah.
• 54:44
  Speaker 1: Whatever.
• 54:44
Speaker 5: You bring a bunch of women together and you know,
• 54:47
Speaker 5: you all go skiing. And talk about shit.
• 54:51
Speaker 9: I have my friends that I do that with already.
• 54:53
Speaker 4: But you know, there's a business idea in there though,
• 54:57
Speaker 4: I think one of the Yeah, no, I like it.
• 54:59
  Speaker 5: I like it.
• 55:00
Speaker 1: Building a team building ski trip.
• 55:02
Speaker 5: There you go, yeah, there you go.
• 55:04
  Speaker 3: Yeahs, I mean that's great.
• 55:07
  Speaker 9: Yeah. Yeah.
• 55:08
Speaker 6: I've done events. I've done just probably about everything in marketing.
• 55:11
Speaker 6: So there's just like there's so many things, so many directions.
• 55:13
Speaker 2: Yeah, just get it, gets quiet, and get with yourself
• 55:16
Speaker 2: and just like write down all the things that are
• 55:18
Speaker 2: appealing to you and you're and everything will start to
• 55:20
Speaker 2: come into focus. You know, if you just allow the
• 55:23
Speaker 2: time and allow yourself the freedom to walk away from
• 55:26
Speaker 2: your job and know you're doing that and take a
• 55:28

Speaker 2: is the worst piece of advice that anyone's given you.
• 56:18
Speaker 5: They are to wear more like dresses. When I said
• 56:26
Speaker 5: what they said more, I was like, what are you

• 56:43
Speaker 2: like they have one. They have the same advice for
• 56:45
Speaker 2: all women, were more dresses. I had the guy at
• 56:49
Speaker 2: the laugh factory tell me to put a bird on
• 56:51
Speaker 2: my shoulder. He said, I should put a bird on
• 56:53
Speaker 2: my shoulder, Jamie Masada. But uh, you know that was
• 56:57
Speaker 2: another thing in your special when you were when you
• 56:59
Speaker 2: were dancing around and showing you when you were demonstrating
• 57:04
Speaker 2: you were like losing. I was like, when she stops
• 57:06
Speaker 2: moving like that, Like what was that? What was that
• 57:08
Speaker 2: shuffle you were doing.
• 57:10
Speaker 1: You were acting out edition. Oh yeah, yeah, the new edition. Yeah,
• 57:15
Speaker 1: when you were done. When you were doing that, I
• 57:17
  Speaker 1: was like, that's.
• 57:18
Speaker 2: Too much exercise while you're on such I'm like, when
• 57:21
Speaker 2: she stops that, let's see how she's breathing.
• 57:25
Speaker 1: That was really worth it though. That was good stuff.
