Dwell On These Things - "David Defeats Goliath" - 1 Samuel 17:1-58
1 Samuel 17 records one of the most familiar events in the Bible, a story that has been repeated to just about every child for 3,000 years. A young shepherd faces a giant warrior and defeats him with a sling and a stone. The story is often presented as an encouragement to face our personal giants with courage. It certainly teaches us about faith, but its primary message is greater than overcoming intimidating circumstances. David acts as Israel’s representative, defeats an enemy the nation is powerless to overcome, and delivers God’s people from fear and oppression.
