- 0:00SPEAKER_01: And this is how the chips fall when things get this bad in football.
- 0:03SPEAKER_01: You've seen it a hundred times.
- 0:05SPEAKER_01: And a lot of times it ends with somebody losing their job.
- 0:08SPEAKER_01: The news has come down, Drew Merringer no longer with the Oregon Ducks as the offensive coordinator.
- 0:13SPEAKER_01: And I think it's a change that needed to be made.
- 0:15SPEAKER_01: I I can't watch us run another screenplay on third and 17.
- 0:18SPEAKER_01: I just can't.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: Oh my God.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: And like the trick play at the end of the game was the final straw, where we lined up 80% of our players at wide receiver and then tried to run like a trick play coming back around to the right with no blockers.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: It was like if a Chip Kelly play had been up all night.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: You know, it was like so ill-advised.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: And we've said on this show, I'm not here to collect people's heads, you know, when they're a new coordinator or whatever, and and firing people for the sake of firing them.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: But by mid-game, I was watching by myself.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: My whole family was down in Grant's Path, so it was just me screaming at the television for change.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: And it's just, I mean, it's I think the elephant in the room is it's too little too late.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: It is.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: And it's cool because like all our systems we use here suck all that noise out of the room, but it's a little lonely when I don't hear the uh the action next door.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: So check it out.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: If you're looking for a health and wellness club in the Portland area, rank number one in the area.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: And of course, state-of-the-art workout facilities.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: Just made a video showcasing the gym upstairs.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: If you want to check that out on social media, also it's been nice.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Now, the weather is turning now, so you got to remember the premier place for indoor and outdoor tennis, as well as high rocks and so much more.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: Check it all out at staffordhills.com.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: Tell them Drew sent you for half off your initiation.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: Now, Marcus, I was here uh last week and we had you on Monday, uh, but then you went on a little mini vacation.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: Were you in Las Vegas?
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: I was, man, and uh the world changed while I was gone.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: I I left and my AC was still running every now and then.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: It was, I think, 80 degrees uh the day before we left, and we came back, and this morning it was 31 degrees in Eugene.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: My heat's on now.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: So um it was nice to get a little bit of that kind of desert sun, you know, the kind that can still burn you uh in late October.
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: So a lot of fun down there, but back to work and dialed in.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, it's nice to have you back.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: It's you know, I had to do a, you know, I had to do one show by myself, and I I don't mind doing that, but it's also like when you're just hearing yourself talk for a half hour straight, you and you know, everyone hates their own voice.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: So like I'm listening back to it and I'm like, God, really just wish Marcus would come back already.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: So I'm I'm glad that you're back.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: I know you dealt with some uh some delays at the airport.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: Didn't you get to the airport at like four in the morning and then get delayed for six hours?
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and not only that, Drew, but that was after we played Nebraska at home in an eight o'clock kickoff game.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: So I was up really, really late, slept for about three hours, was you know, Johnny on the spot at the airport an hour early, like you always need to be in Eugene.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: And then we got the text message, hey, this flight's not taking off because some type of crew mix-up.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: They didn't have a crew for the flight.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: They didn't have flight attendants, they didn't have a dude to fly the thing.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: If I was gonna get there on time, it was gonna be because I was flapping or I was steering a plane, and uh they wouldn't let me do either one of them.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: So yeah, six and a half hours delayed ended up getting to Vegas.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: Um, nice thing is I live like 10 minutes from the airport.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: We just came home and went back to sleep for a couple hours.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: Oh, really?
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: Oh, and that's what's nice about Eugene.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: I always joke that it's like an oversized travel lodge.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: Like I remember when the president um actually landed at the Eugene airport.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: I was picking up a buddy at the airport at the same time, and you could see the plane over the airport.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: The plane was bigger than the airport.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: It's it's really crazy how small it is.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: And and I've got stories like my bachelor party, we went to Vegas, and I remember this was back in the paper ticket days.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: We all had to check in at the front counter to get our boarding pass.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: And one buddy goes, I gotta take a dump.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: And it was like five in the morning.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: So he runs off and goes to the bathroom while we all check in.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: And as the last person that's still there checks in, the lady behind the counter throws a high viz orange and yellow vest on and slams the door shut and walks out to get the plane on the tarmac.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: Long story short, my buddy doesn't get checked in and has to take another flight to Vegas because there was no one at the counter.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: So, yes, it's great having a little airport, regional one right next to my house, but you gotta understand how it works because I've missed flights, I've had friends miss flights just because, well, the guy that's cleaning the bathrooms is also the guy that's responsible for getting the plane on the tarmac.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: So Oh, yeah.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: And I've seen it at times where the person does the front counter, you walk upstairs, they come through a back door, they're at the top counter, and then when we landed back there two days later, they were at baggage claim.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: And they hadn't slept.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: Uh because this is like one person running an entire airport.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: Now, the good part about it is when you get home, you're done.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: And and normally, you know, unless you get lucky, there's an extra layover somewhere.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: And you, I always hate when I lived in Eugene, I would, if I was going to Vegas or Cabo, I'd have to fly north to Portland and then back down.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: I was like, this is very counterproductive, the amount of jet fuel that we're using to go up and come back.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: But it is nice when you finally land back.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: Long-term parking is in the front yard of this place.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: So you're just out, boom, no line, boom, no cars, home.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: I there's literally, I've traveled further on like terminal trains that get you from terminal A to terminal B in airports.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: Just to get to my next gate, then I have to travel to get home when I fly into Eugene.
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: It's quite amazing.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: So um, no, no hard feelings to the people about Eugene Airport.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: This is the other thing that you're used to.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: If you fly out of it all the time or into it, you're pretty much constantly delayed.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: I think they look at Eugene and be like, yeah, they smoke a lot of weed down there.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: They'll be fine if we get them there four hours late.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: Like they're probably late for everything.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: We are kind of used to it at this point.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and then you've got the one restaurant downstairs, which I'm guessing when you were there at that hour, not open.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: No.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: So you've got, and then you've got like a little like breakfast bar thing upstairs.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: So there's really you're lucky you're that close to home and you can go home and relax, because otherwise you're just kicking rocks.
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: It's a good thing my sober wife was my travel buddy, Drew, because that uh that turns into me sitting at an airport bar at 5 a.m.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: drinking beer if I'm going to Vegas with my air or with my buddies, and you know, wasn't drinking on this trip.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: So there was no reason to stay there.
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: It's just like, let's go home, get back in bed.
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: The dogs were happy to see us.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: It was a cool little reset and made it meant that I didn't have to sleep for hours on a plane, but still kind of bummed, missed a couple of things that we were supposed to do, but uh still had a good time in Vegas and didn't come home without a shirt, which is always a good thing.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: Which is funny because when you went there, you it was warm, the duck season was alive.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: You know, I I watched that Nebraska game.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: I had done a like a fundraising event, and while I was there, I was like in a full tuxedo, the whole thing, and then I get off stage and I'm like, what's the duck score?
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: And they're like, it's halftime.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: They haven't scored a point.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, shut up.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: Like, go and like, you know, pound pavement over to my phone, pick it up, and I'm like, oh, they're not joking.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: We have no points.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: And so by the time I got home, it was you know darn near midnight and the game was still in action.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: I was more nervous sitting there than I was in front of all these important people trying to do this fundraiser in a tuxedo.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: And so it was there was a lot of hope going around.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: Um that was dashed seriously over the weekend as the ducks come out, score first, they're up 10-0.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: It's like, okay, well, we're gonna finally get our rhythm again.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: And we all know how that went.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: Uh, never scored another point, looked pathetic, and basically self-destructed the rest of the season.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's really I was thinking about how I was gonna open this up when you kicked it to me about this game, Drew.
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: And I think the only uh way I can really convey my feelings is hey, have you seen any good TV shows lately?
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: Um, because it's it's really bad.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: And and we talked about it, you know, a couple uh episodes ago about losing your identity.
- 9:49SPEAKER_01: And I don't know how a roster this talented looks this bad.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: The defense was the only bright spot, and even they got burnt.
- 9:57SPEAKER_01: And even when you have a well-covered play and your DB gets a hand on the ball, somehow, somehow, a guy comes down with it and seals the game uh there in the fourth quarter.
- 10:07SPEAKER_01: Uh, I mean, great coverage by Brandon Finney doing what he normally does, getting his hand in the way, and and we're still looking at a game-sealing touchdown.
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: And this is how the chips fall when things get this bad in football.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: You've seen it a hundred times.
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: You all of a sudden you can't buy a bucket, all the penalties are on you, all the calls go against you, all of the replays go against you, and a lot of times it ends with somebody losing their job.
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: And as we sit here on on the Sunday after losing to uh Illinois when we're recording this, Drew, the news has come down.
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: Drew Merringer no longer with the Oregon Ducks as the offensive coordinator.
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: Um, and I think it's a change that needed to be made.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: I I can't watch us run another screenplay on third and 17.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: I just can't.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: Oh my god.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: And like the trick play at the end of the game was the final straw, where we lined up 80% of our players at wide receiver and then tried to run like a trick play coming back around to the right with no blockers, and it was like it was like if a Chip Kelly play had been up all night, yeah, you know, it was like so ill-advised.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: And we've said on this show, I'm not here to collect people's heads, you know, when they're a new coordinator or whatever, and and firing people for the sake of firing them.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: But by mid-game, I was watching by myself, my whole family was down in Grant's Pass, so it was just me screaming at the television for change.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: And it's just, I mean, it's I think the elephant in the room is it's too little too late.
- 11:50SPEAKER_01: It is.
- 11:50SPEAKER_01: You maybe benefit more from this happening last week, but then you take a new coordinator and a new play caller into a hostile environment all the way across the country.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: That can go bad too.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: Um, I I kind of think maybe there's a little bit of arrogance here from Oregon's head coach Dan Lanning.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: And I don't get me wrong, I love the guy, but you know, we we hired from within after we lost two really good coordinators who are having mixed luck at their new schools.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: Cal's not looking so great.
- 12:19SPEAKER_01: Kentucky looks amazing uh with Will Stein at the helm.
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: And we hired from within a guy whose only offensive coordinator experience was was with Rutgers, and his passing game ranked 122 out of 128.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: I know we've got the athletes, I know we've got the roster, but even that can't beat bad play calling.
- 12:39SPEAKER_01: And I think that as you listen to the Oregon, not only the fans, but the pundits, the guys that actually study the stats and are are trying to follow the team as best they can and are in the press conferences, we've all been seeing the same thing.
- 12:53SPEAKER_01: This is uninspired play calling.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: Our receivers aren't getting open, our offensive line can't.
- 12:59SPEAKER_01: I mean, you throw a wet paper towel at one of those guys and they're gonna let it by.
- 13:03SPEAKER_01: Um, they're just not playing as a team right now.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: Nobody's winning their individual battles.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: And I gotta be honest, Drew, the more I watch Dylan Riola fling balls off uh floaters off his back foot, the more I think that that USC performance was sort of an outlier.
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: And this is actually the quarterback that he really is, and maybe that's why he was struggling at Nebraska, uh, who looks pretty good with a running quarterback in there this year.
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I feel like we're at a point where we need to look elsewhere for next year.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: Because, you know, first of all, there's a there's an entire school of thought that, and I've I've seen a lot of people say this, that it might be time for Oregon to shut down all the draft picks or the ones that are with who don't care about this season anymore, and that they're ready to go to the next stage and start figuring out what we got left.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: Because there's gonna be a slew of people who run for the door at the end of the year, and maybe it's time to start addressing the talent that we have left and doing a little bit of a synopsis from the ground up of how we're gonna rebuild this thing.
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's gonna be raisin brand when it comes to NIL, Drew.
- 14:16SPEAKER_01: Two scoops for every position because you heard him say it yesterday in the broadcast right off the bat.
- 14:22SPEAKER_01: While we've got all this talent that came back, this is the youngest roster or one of the youngest rosters in the Big Ten.
- 14:29SPEAKER_01: We're starting multiple freshman sophomores all the way across the offense, and the defense is going to do that too because they're gonna turn over next year that hold line, most of those backers.
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: And and this year, we didn't really do that.
- 14:42SPEAKER_01: We brought in a couple guys from the transfer portal, and what happened?
- 14:45SPEAKER_01: Well, Koy Peric looks lost out there most of the time, and he was an all Big Ten first teamer.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: Um, Iverson Hooks has only seen the field because all of the receivers are either down or suspended.
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: We don't really know yet.
- 14:58SPEAKER_01: And this is what I talk about when I say things fall apart.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: When the wheels come off, they come all the way off.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: You're not only dealing with an injured quarterback, an offensive line that can't block, all the on-the-field stuff.
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: We got off-the-field stuff that happened this last week, too.
- 15:11SPEAKER_01: It's very distracting.
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: A team leader like Evan Stewart getting popped for a DUI.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: Now, of course, they've declined to file those charges, but that doesn't necessarily mean he's out of the woods.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: And we have rumors of street racing.
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: Now, I didn't see anything, and I was watching it really close, that said that anybody else was involved in any criminal activity besides Evan Stewart.
- 15:33SPEAKER_01: But two receivers, Messiah Hampton and Jalen Lott, show up last day on the injury report out of nowhere and don't even travel with the team after these rumors, makes me wonder what we don't know yet, Drew.
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: And and like I said, things are falling apart.
- 15:48SPEAKER_01: Or what we might never know.
- 15:51SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: Because I I feel like a lot of it got swept under the rug.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: Um, I don't know this, but I there was so there were a lot of rumors, first of all.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: And I I feel like rumors often are unsubstantiated, and a lot of things, you know, they were like, oh, they were all street racing, they were all DUI, this, that, and the other.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: And then I heard a rumor that the DUI was actually a weed DUI.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: Now, I don't know this to be true, but if we're theorizing, one way to fight a DUI is if somebody says, okay, well, you're getting a weed DUI, well, you have to prove that the person smoked weed or ingested weed in the short term.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: Because you can't do what you do with alcohol because alcohol has a short half-life.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: So if you are to give someone a blood test or a breathalyzer test, alcohol is ever present and there's no way to argue it.
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: You blow over the limit, you blew over the limit.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: I mean, what are you gonna do about it?
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: But if they were like, well, it's a weed DUI, and it's like, well, I didn't smoke, and they test his blood and he's got weed in his blood, you can fight that.
- 17:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, especially with a legal team I'm I'm guessing we have over at the university.
- 17:10SPEAKER_01: So I I mean, I I try not to be, you know, tongue-in-cheek here, but Dan Lanning did cut his teeth at the University of Georgia.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: And if anybody knows how to deal with a moving violation, it's guys that come from the University of Georgia.
- 17:23SPEAKER_01: So this could be some creative coaching, and it's all part of running a program these days.
- 17:28SPEAKER_01: I mean, you're putting millions of dollars in 18-year-olds' pockets, you gotta expect every now and then one of them's gonna go buy a Camaro and see how fast it goes.
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: It's true.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: And, you know, I'm wondering if Dan, with all the adversity, if, you know, because he just kind of showed up in a successful situation, he's a good recruiter, and when your team's doing well, you look like magic.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: I wonder if he's a little in over his head with what he's dealing with.
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: You know, like when your coordinators don't haul the mail and you're the one who chose them, when your players are out running amuck and now you're trying to right the ship mid-season, but you're also having to put out fires.
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: It's a lot.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: And you know, I saw somebody um one of the talking heads saying, look at Dan Lanning.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: He looks like he he's aging like a president.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know, like uh even my wife was like, Man, somebody needs to take him to the Botox party because he just looks distressed, like his forehead looks like a mountain range, and it it didn't look like that a year ago.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: So, you know, we he was talking one year ago about how he wants to coach at Oregon forever until all of his kids are out of school.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: Well, now, not that he's on the robes, because I'm not here to do that, but you have another season like this next year, and the chatter is going to it's gonna be peaking.
- 18:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's gonna get a lot louder for sure, Drew.
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: And I don't uh I I like the guy.
- 18:57SPEAKER_01: I think he's I I would never say his seat's even hot at this point because with what's happened to Oregon in the past, with guys leapfrogging out of this program all the time to go elsewhere, and you got a guy sitting here saying he'll stay forever.
- 19:09SPEAKER_01: Well, he's already he's pro he's done a lot more to prove that he's a good coach than he has to prove that he's a bad coach at this point.
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: And it's easy to overreact when you're standing in a room and the whole thing is on fire, and that's what it feels like right now.
- 19:23SPEAKER_01: But I, you know, uh it's a copycat league.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: And what did teams like Ohio State do?
- 19:29SPEAKER_01: What did teams like Texas do?
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: They went out and spent big money on coordinators, NFL guys, ex-NFL guys that have won championships and have pedigree.
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: And you wonder if that's not the next move for this Oregon coaching staff, because um, we definitely need some help.
- 19:43SPEAKER_01: And Dan is a defensive coach, and lo and behold, the defense looks good, the offense looks colorblind.
- 19:49SPEAKER_01: And this was supposed to be a player-led team.
- 19:53SPEAKER_01: That was one thing we heard a lot of of Dan Lanning's talking about.
- 19:56SPEAKER_01: There's a player-led team.
- 19:57SPEAKER_01: Well, your top leader was eating crayons a couple weeks ago because he got his head slammed off the turf so hard, and it doesn't feel like anybody else has stepped up at this point.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: It's time to return the leadership back to the adults in the room and see if we can write the shit because uh right now we're hoping for bowl eligible, man.
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: Give me the Pop Tarts bowl.
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: I'm happy with it at this point.
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: Well, you know what I think would be cool, and I and I want to ask you one more question before we take a break, but uh just the side note is how cool would it be?
- 20:26SPEAKER_00: And after we take a break, we're gonna talk Oregon State and where the Beavers are at and some of the things that are happening for them.
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: How cool would it be now that our our playoff hopes are dashed if the matchmakers made a game between Oregon State and Oregon in a bowl game in the first year that we don't have our Civil War game in all these years?
- 20:47SPEAKER_00: I mean, I I'd be pretty excited to watch that.
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: I think that would be a lot of excitement for for our area.
- 20:54SPEAKER_00: Now, we'll find out if we're even in the same ballpark to play against them at that point, you know.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: But if the if they can get Dante Moore back, and I don't know if he's even coming back at this point, but if we can get him back and Evan Stewart is going to be allowed to play, and you know, maybe we can string together a couple of wins and then have that time between the season and the bowl game in order to get healthy, it could be a good game.
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: But the last question I want to ask you before we take a break what about the thought of bringing back Chip Kelly?
- 21:28SPEAKER_00: I know it sounds like a novelty, but what and I know he's at Northwestern right now.
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: We're gonna see him next week.
- 21:33SPEAKER_00: He's coming to town.
- 21:35SPEAKER_00: Could be a good time to you know grease the wheels and and and open back up the old trust tree where you know there's a lot of jaded feelings in there.
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: But I've always loved Chip as a duck.
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: It would be kind of cool to bring him back.
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: I mean, he helped Ohio State really do great things when he was there before he went back to the NFL and just faltered with the Raiders.
- 21:59SPEAKER_00: But what do you?
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Think?
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: You think there's any hope there, or is it a terrible idea?
- 22:04SPEAKER_01: I love Chip Kelly.
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: I've got uh newspaper clippings within arm's reach of me right now uh from the old Chip Kelly days, Drew, uh hanging on my wall.
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: Um I I don't think that Chip is ever going to be a recruiter.
- 22:18SPEAKER_01: And I think in this day and age, you have to have a guy who is out there winning offensive recruits for you at a high level.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: And look, I don't think Merringer was the guy for that either.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: Um, if Chip decides ever that recruiting is gonna be his thing and he's gonna go out and become really good at it.
- 22:36SPEAKER_01: I don't know if there's a better offensive coordinator as far as X's and O's are concerned in the league.
- 22:42SPEAKER_01: But um I just don't know from a recruiting standpoint.
- 22:45SPEAKER_01: He seemed real comfortable taking that job at Northwestern.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: That's a real big step down from Ohio State.
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: But you see what he can do with the quarterback, the the talents uh of Aiden Chiles.
- 22:56SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's killing it in Northwestern right now.
- 22:58SPEAKER_01: Nobody expected to look up and see Northwestern with one loss at this point in the season.
- 23:03SPEAKER_01: Nobody expected us to be four and three.
- 23:06SPEAKER_01: Like I said, see any good TV lately?
- 23:09SPEAKER_00: All right, we're gonna take a break.
- 23:11SPEAKER_00: We'll be back with some positive news from the Northwest as the Oregon State Beavers got some huge news just a couple days ago.

- 24:23SPEAKER_00: My wife absolutely loves it.

- 24:31SPEAKER_00: Check it out today at Staffordhills.com and tell them that Drew sent you for half off your initiation.
- 24:38SPEAKER_00: And finally, brought to you by Axiom, Plumbing, Sewer, and Septic.
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: Just recently, finding out even more how much I love these guys, Bruce and the gang helping me out when I had a water leak spring up in my front yard.
- 24:52SPEAKER_00: And I've already had a history of them helping me troubleshoot problems, but some problems are bigger than you can handle by yourself.
- 25:00SPEAKER_00: And while I tried to dig in that yard, it was not gonna happen.
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: And I brought in the big dogs, and not only did they give me the best price around, they also took care of business and made me confident that I'd have water back in time to make sure my kids could have a bath and a glass of water when they need it.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: Check them out today at axiompdx.com.
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: $500 off a water heater if you say I sent you, or 10% off your first service with Axiom Plumbing, Sewer, and Septic.
- 25:29SPEAKER_00: Well, even though the Ducks are having an off-year, is what we'll call it.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: Uh, the Oregon State Beavers are resurgent after starting the season 0-2.
- 25:39SPEAKER_00: They have been nothing but magical, bringing a lot of excitement to Corvallis and to Beaver fans all over the area.
- 25:47SPEAKER_00: And, you know, we joked around a lot, Marcus, about um the stars, star quarterback, star receiver for the Beavers, even their new star that's rising in their head coach.
- 26:00SPEAKER_00: That as soon as they win, they'll all leave.
- 26:04SPEAKER_00: And I guess that's in question now because their star receiver, Jesse Legree, who came out as a three-star recruit, and nobody wanted him, um, is now has 46 receptions, 1,040 receiving yards, 14 touchdowns, and leads the nation in receiving yards and touchdowns with those numbers.
- 26:28SPEAKER_00: And so you would think someone's gonna pay him big.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: Now, Chad Ocho Cinco, also known as Chad Johnson from back in the day, Oregon State alumni from it's not even arguable, since they were the best they've ever been when him and TJ Hooshman Zada were there.
- 26:47SPEAKER_00: And he said, if Oregon State can come up with$2 million for Jesse Legree, he'll match it.
- 26:53SPEAKER_00: And I kind of thought I was kind of calling BS, um, like that he was just a little bit of lip service.
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: Well, just days after that, I don't know who came through with what and what the payout is, but Jesse Legree in their off week this last week went back to his high school because he never had a signing day at his high school because he was not this high-level recruit.
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: He goes back there and signs up for next season with the Beavers, which to me is major news because and then he went as far as to say, Marcus, that this is the beginning of, you know, basically a juggernaut, and that this is a program on the rise and that he wants to be a part of it.
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: What did you think here in that news?
- 27:41SPEAKER_01: I I was surprised because it's a little bit unprecedented.
- 27:44SPEAKER_01: This is something in the NIL era that we haven't really seen that much of.
- 27:48SPEAKER_01: You have guys maybe hinting towards one way or the other sometimes in these press conferences, but you don't see a quote unquote re-signing at this point in time of the year because everybody's keeping their options open.
- 28:01SPEAKER_01: I mean, uh, you know, Oregon State still got four games left.
- 28:04SPEAKER_01: You lose all four of them.
- 28:06SPEAKER_01: How good do you feel about re-signing when things were hot?
- 28:09SPEAKER_01: Nobody knows, but the check's probably big enough to uh make him feel good about it, Drew.
- 28:14SPEAKER_01: And one thing that I really was entertained by that came out of this whole thing, and I always am when it comes to college, is you know, we talk about these are 18, 19-year-old kids.
- 28:24SPEAKER_01: Some of their parents and family like to get involved and like to be visible.
- 28:28SPEAKER_01: I believe it was either his dad or his uncle that came out and posted about this on Twitter saying decision day was on the way, and nobody knew what that meant.
- 28:38SPEAKER_01: And also why he's saying it now.
- 28:41SPEAKER_01: If you're gonna transfer, you're also not gonna come out after seven games have been played and say you're gonna transfer.
- 28:47SPEAKER_01: What the hell is the decision about?
- 28:49SPEAKER_01: Did he decide which car he wanted to buy?
- 28:51SPEAKER_01: Nobody knew.
- 28:52SPEAKER_01: And uh it, I'll be honest with you, it was entertaining.
- 28:54SPEAKER_01: It wasn't the team that I follow, uh, but I was I was tuned in to see what the hell the decision was.
- 29:00SPEAKER_01: This surprised me a little bit, but um, hey, good news for the Beavers, man.
- 29:04SPEAKER_01: You gotta feel really good about where this thing is going.
- 29:07SPEAKER_01: Because, like you said, it is on the rise and it's got to feel pretty good up in Corvallis right now.
- 29:11SPEAKER_00: And it's a smart move because it kind of allows Oregon State to build a class for next year around him.
- 29:22SPEAKER_00: You know, you can go out and recruit now and say, we've got a starboard receiver, we've got, and if they can lock their quarterback in and get him to promise he won't go to, that you've got the intangibles there, you just need to build around it in order to get somewhere.
- 29:37SPEAKER_00: And and with the Pac-12, the way that it is, with teams like Texas State on the horizon, you have an opportunity to be dominant.
- 29:46SPEAKER_00: Them and Boise State can kind of treat this like Gonzaga does with basketball, where you know you're you're playing against lesser talent, but because of that, you constantly are a winner and you're seen in a different light.
- 30:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 30:03SPEAKER_01: Boise State ranked 20th this uh right now as it sits here, and they've got a meeting with Oregon State up in Boise, November 14th on the horizon.
- 30:12SPEAKER_01: Uh the Beavers gonna face Fresno State and Texas State away and home, respectively, before that.
- 30:19SPEAKER_01: And that right now, I don't see either one of those teams hanging with Oregon State the way they're playing.
- 30:24SPEAKER_01: So this could be a really, I mean, it could be a top 20 or even a top 15 matchup.
- 30:29SPEAKER_01: Um, that might be saying a little bit much, but hey, everybody's losing right now.
- 30:34SPEAKER_01: If you're in the top 10, it's the kiss of death in college football right now.
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: So a lot could change by the time Oregon State meets Boise State, but this could be sort of what we're looking at.
- 30:44SPEAKER_01: The Kareem had to rise to the top in the Pac-12, and everybody wondered who is it gonna be.
- 30:49SPEAKER_01: You kind of slot Boise State there automatically because of their performance over the last few years.
- 30:54SPEAKER_01: Nobody saw Oregon State coming and they look great.
- 30:57SPEAKER_01: You know, something else that I think of here is let's hope that other conferences don't poach these teams now that the Pac-12 has a couple of teams that look like they could be playoff viable if things fall their way.
- 31:08SPEAKER_01: I'd hate to see the Big 12 come calling and try to rip some of these schools away, Boise State and Oregon State.
- 31:14SPEAKER_01: Uh it's not anything that's happened.
- 31:16SPEAKER_01: I don't think there's discussions.
- 31:18SPEAKER_01: I don't want to um, you know, propagate rumors, Drew, but that type of thing's happened in the recent uh years here in college football.
- 31:26SPEAKER_01: So something to look out for.
- 31:27SPEAKER_00: And outside, now Gonzaga doesn't play football, but outside of Gonzaga, they should call it the PAC State Conference because is there any team that's not, you know, San Diego State, Texas State, Oregon State, Boise State, Colorado State, San Diego State, Washington State.
- 31:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean it they just keep coming.
- 31:48SPEAKER_01: It is all all-state conference.
- 31:52SPEAKER_00: That's what they should just call it, all state.
- 31:54SPEAKER_00: All-state conference.
- 31:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, get get a sponsor in there, everybody wears a red sweater, it'll be perfect.
- 32:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:01SPEAKER_00: Now it's cool though that they're selling out in Corvallis.
- 32:05SPEAKER_00: And, you know, what is sad to me is, you know, there are still some jaded fans who, I don't know, I feel like they had their hand put in boiling water for too many years in a row, where, you know, like I put up a post about how I was gonna take my duck flag down, but then, you know, it's basically a horror show and Halloween's coming up, so why not just leave it up?
- 32:27SPEAKER_00: And it's a self-deprecating joke about your own team.
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: And people are still like, they're not only cruel, which I can handle cruel, like you can make fun of my hat and whatever.
- 32:39SPEAKER_00: You're too old for flat billed hats.
- 32:41SPEAKER_00: That's fine.
- 32:42SPEAKER_00: But you also like calm down.
- 32:45SPEAKER_00: Like, can you can you go back and listen to any of these podcasts about how we're supporting the beavers and have been since they were 0-2?
- 32:55SPEAKER_00: So, you know, you can't call us bandwagoners because we've been constantly trying to pick them up and you know give them love.
- 33:03SPEAKER_00: And so some fans just they they'll never stop being jaded.
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: It's the same reason why the first time I ever went to Corvallis when during the TJ Hooshman Sada thing, I was in line at a mini mart in Corvallis in a duck shirt, and someone just two-hand shoved me in the back for nothing.
- 33:22SPEAKER_00: For nothing.
- 33:23SPEAKER_00: And I turn around and he's got dip falling out of his mouth, and I'm like, I just looked at him and I go, if they drew a cartoon of a beaver fan, it's you.
- 33:32SPEAKER_00: And like, you know, I'm surprised I didn't get in a fist fight right there because it was pathetic to me, but it's that guy who gives everyone a bad name.
- 33:40SPEAKER_00: And there's a lot of great beaver fans out there, and I just hope that we can be a little more civil now that we're not in the same conference.
- 33:47SPEAKER_01: Sir, even though that sheep is on a leash, I don't believe it's in uh invited into the store.
- 33:51SPEAKER_01: You got to get it out of here.
- 33:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 33:53SPEAKER_01: And nine out of ten of us think it's your girlfriend.
- 33:56SPEAKER_01: So there's that.
- 33:58SPEAKER_01: Uh it is, it's been tough because listen, uh, the beavers have had to eat a lot of crow over these last 10 years.
- 34:04SPEAKER_01: And even though they did get over on the ducks a couple of times with the conference realignment and us not being in the same conference anymore, uh, there's been a lot of vitriol and hate, and all of a sudden the tables have turned.
- 34:16SPEAKER_01: We're licking our wounds over here, and the beavers feet uh feel 10 foot tall and bulletproof.
- 34:20SPEAKER_01: I'll put up with it for a little bit, Corvallis, but we have been pretty nice to you this year.
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: So remember that when you're throwing bread at me as I walk down the street.
- 34:29SPEAKER_00: Um, and I I thought of, I was thinking about this, you know, and that's one of my favorite stories.
- 34:34SPEAKER_00: Um, where actually it's my dad, I'm not even gonna take credit for it.
- 34:38SPEAKER_00: My dad was like, I was watching that clip of Marcus talking about a 12-year-old girl throwing bread at his feet and you know, to mock the ducks.
- 34:48SPEAKER_00: And he said it would be funny if you had a pocket full of twigs.
- 34:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and you wood chips throwing wood chips back at him.
- 34:55SPEAKER_00: You know, there's a lot of things you could do.
- 34:57SPEAKER_00: There are a little pocket full of sawdust and just sprinkle, sprinkle.
- 35:01SPEAKER_00: Um, but it's nice of you to be the bigger man and not to throw things back at a at a 12-year-old girl.
- 35:08SPEAKER_01: Hey, this year, the way it feels, I've already got my hand in a pocket full of slivers, Drew.
- 35:12SPEAKER_01: I don't stand to lose anything by taking a few twigs to the game.
- 35:15SPEAKER_00: That's 100% true.
- 35:17SPEAKER_00: Uh, well, that's gonna do it for us.
- 35:18SPEAKER_00: Uh, I am excited for Oregon State in the future.
- 35:22SPEAKER_00: I do think it would be awesome if the Ducks could get their life together.
- 35:25SPEAKER_00: No more dreams about the playoff, but man, an in-state bowl game.
- 35:31SPEAKER_00: Uh, I don't know which one it would be.
- 35:33SPEAKER_00: Cheese it bowl, toilet bowl.
- 35:35SPEAKER_00: I don't care.
- 35:36SPEAKER_00: Heck, let's play it at Providence Park.
- 35:39SPEAKER_00: Let's just do the damn thing.
- 35:40SPEAKER_00: But uh I am supporting both teams still, even though um it's a it's a tough year to be a duck.
- 35:46SPEAKER_00: You can't win them all, and you can't go to the playoffs every single year unless you're Ohio State and even they have a hurt quarterback.
- 35:54SPEAKER_00: So let's just hope that we can play dream killer to them in a couple of weeks and we can at least hang our hat on something.
- 36:00SPEAKER_00: Somebody's gotta play in the Lays, do us a flavor bowl, Drew.
- 36:04SPEAKER_00: Might as well be us.
- 36:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they get those Casey Masterpiece chips out.
- 36:08SPEAKER_00: They still got those.
- 36:09SPEAKER_00: I I don't know.
- 36:10SPEAKER_00: I'm big on the all dress, the purple bag.
- 36:12SPEAKER_00: That's the one I like right now.
- 36:13SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 36:13SPEAKER_00: I'll have to get you a bag.
- 36:15SPEAKER_00: All right, Marcus.
- 36:16SPEAKER_00: Uh, we'll be back at it uh every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday.
- 36:20SPEAKER_00: Make sure you subscribe or follow the show, and then that way you don't miss out on a single episode.
- 36:27SPEAKER_00: Have a great day, buddy.
- 36:28SPEAKER_00: Thanks for tuning in, everybody.
