Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: This mediated podcast. Welcome to Meat Eater Trivia. I'm your host,
- 0:13Speaker 1: trivia curator Spencer new Heart. This is trivia you're not
- 0:17Speaker 1: going to get from Jeopardy, Trivial Pursuit, or any bar
- 0:19Speaker 1: and grill trivia. These are born out a meat Eaters
- 0:21Speaker 1: for verticals. I feel like maybe curator is not a
- 0:24Speaker 1: great word. What what are you get thrown around a lot? Now? Oh? Yeah,
- 0:27Speaker 1: everything's curated. Now, I think this is a curation. Everything's
- 0:32Speaker 1: curated of facts. It's not because you're no, because you're
- 0:35Speaker 1: creating the things you're not. Like like if you go
- 0:38Speaker 1: to a website, it's like curated home goods. It's like
- 0:41Speaker 1: they go around to a bunch of places and like
- 0:44Speaker 1: order stuff. I'd say fewer and fewer things everyting curated.
- 0:48Speaker 1: It's a lot of algorithms like choosing things. Man, there's
- 0:50Speaker 1: no algorithm here trivia. Here's let's ask probably the person
- 0:54Speaker 1: who's most hip to chef Kevin Gillaspie, probably most hip
- 0:58Speaker 1: to like buzzwords. Yeah, why am I the most hip?
- 1:01Speaker 1: Because you work in the restaurant world and so you know,
- 1:04Speaker 1: you like pay attention to what's going on around. Yeah,
- 1:06Speaker 1: curated is definitely like a cool kid word right now?
- 1:09Speaker 1: For surely, for sure, I told you I think this
- 1:12Speaker 1: is but I also think what Phil is saying is
- 1:14Speaker 1: also true. So we've just started using the word curated
- 1:16Speaker 1: because it makes something sound valuable. It's fine, what do
- 1:21Speaker 1: you think would be about? This is valuable? Just just
- 1:23Speaker 1: keep it your host? Do you think no? I'd be
- 1:25Speaker 1: like um the host Spencer new Hearth And I'm the
- 1:28Speaker 1: one who creates and compiles. I am your trivia creator
- 1:34Speaker 1: and compiler, trivia master, trivia master that NPR to puzzle
- 1:40Speaker 1: master Will Shorts. You don't want to get confused in him? Sure?
- 1:44Speaker 1: Now these are born out of mediators four verticals hunting, fishing, conservation,
- 1:50Speaker 1: and cooking. And it's almost like he's all annoyed. Yeah,
- 1:54Speaker 1: so I'm all right sorry, keep him moving along here.
- 1:59Speaker 1: We got lot of a lot of things to get
- 2:01Speaker 1: to you. Now, there is a prize, and if you
- 2:03Speaker 1: weren't at our last game of trivia, you don't know
- 2:05Speaker 1: this yet, but meat Eater has upped the anti from
- 2:08Speaker 1: donating one hundred dollars to five hundred dollars, so the
- 2:12Speaker 1: winner will get to choose where that five hundred dollars
- 2:14Speaker 1: goes to what conservation organization is going to receive it.
- 2:18Speaker 1: We played eight more populi show gets the more we're
- 2:20Speaker 1: gonna add money to it, Yeah, we're not. We can't
- 2:22Speaker 1: go the other direction at this point. I think we
- 2:24Speaker 1: should have players that are sponsored by individual conservation. Oh,
- 2:29Speaker 1: like I'm playing for Then you're playing for I'm playing
- 2:33Speaker 1: for TRCP. Yeah, like Celebrity Jeopardy. That's right. Yeah. Now
- 2:38Speaker 1: we've played eight times so far. Steve is won half
- 2:41Speaker 1: of those, Brody is won twice, Clay is one once,
- 2:44Speaker 1: and Seth is one once. I'm far far ahead of Brody. Yeah,
- 2:49Speaker 1: but see we quitte m every time. We excluded him
- 2:53Speaker 1: last time, and he was not happy. We quitn't vite
- 2:56Speaker 1: him and I pulled away ahead, which fig figure. Yeah,
- 3:00Speaker 1: we have some housekeeping to get to you from last time.
- 3:03Speaker 1: A couple of games ago, I asked what the seven
- 3:05Speaker 1: skin glands are of a white tailed deer. The most
- 3:07Speaker 1: mysterious of those glands is the metatasal. You just screwed
- 3:10Speaker 1: up again. Oh you never said skin glands. Well, I
- 3:15Speaker 1: don't think I did specify skin glands, but it should
- 3:18Speaker 1: be skin damn sure. And that's what people pointed out,
- 3:20Speaker 1: because there's all kinds of glands inside your body, but
- 3:23Speaker 1: I would it's not in the spirit of the game
- 3:25Speaker 1: for Cal to say like pituitary or whatever. Whatever. Cal's
- 3:30Speaker 1: answer was, Okay, I did not say skin glands. You're correct.
- 3:34Speaker 1: When we come out with the trivia board game, it
- 3:36Speaker 1: will say skin glands. We got that part cleaned up. Now.
- 3:41Speaker 1: The metatarsal is the most mysterious of these glands, which
- 3:44Speaker 1: I said, some biologist speculate is used for temperature regulation.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Jim Heffelfinger out in to let me know that he
- 3:49Speaker 1: doesn't buy that theory, but he provided three others that
- 3:51Speaker 1: he thinks are more likely true. One is that they
- 3:54Speaker 1: are used to mark an individual deer's bed. Two is
- 3:58Speaker 1: at the optimal height to rub on vegetation, is deer
- 4:02Speaker 1: walk by leaving their scentes they go, And three is
- 4:05Speaker 1: that they can release an odor that serves as an
- 4:08Speaker 1: alarm signal to other deer. This all goes to show
- 4:10Speaker 1: that there are some mysteries about America's most pursued big
- 4:16Speaker 1: game animals. Dragon don't even play the hefflefinger jingle. That
- 4:21Speaker 1: was the only bad hefflefinger feedback we've ever gotten. You know,
- 4:24Speaker 1: I liked it. You don't buy dragging their feet through
- 4:26Speaker 1: the grass to leave sound. The thing that that is
- 4:29Speaker 1: that is the right height to rub brush? Oh, I
- 4:34Speaker 1: thought not orbital metatarsal is on their legs. I got
- 4:55Speaker 1: off on metals. I got off on orbital. Also a
- 4:58Speaker 1: few games ago there was a the Roman's eyeballs on
- 5:01Speaker 1: the brush. Yeah, okay, I buy that's that's a good call.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Also a few games ago there was a question about
- 5:06Speaker 1: the inspiration for Jagermeister's logo, which dates back to about
- 5:09Speaker 1: thirteen hundred years ago, when Saint Hubert saw a white
- 5:12Speaker 1: stag walking through the forest with a glowing cross hanging
- 5:15Speaker 1: from its handlers. Custafote, a Greek Orthodox Christian listener from Texas,
- 5:20Speaker 1: no dan to let me know that he will actually
- 5:22Speaker 1: pray to Saint Hubert before hunts. Here is part of
- 5:25Speaker 1: one of the prayers that he'll recite, which he got
- 5:28Speaker 1: from a Louisiana hunter, Don Dubik. Great Saint Hubert, bless
- 5:34Speaker 1: all who gather here in this natural setting, whose aim
- 5:37Speaker 1: is to follow in your footsteps, to be skilled in
- 5:39Speaker 1: ethical hunters, grant us confidence, perseverance, patience, and the accuracy
- 5:45Speaker 1: to increase our proficiency in the fields, forests, swamps and marshes.
- 5:51Speaker 1: But above all, Saint Hubert, we ask her help and,
- 5:54Speaker 1: always holding a deep sense of respect and reverence for
- 5:57Speaker 1: the game, we pursue bestowing us a spirit of generosity
- 6:01Speaker 1: and humility, that we may enjoy bountiful hunting, and that
- 6:05Speaker 1: we passed these cherished and sacred rights to future generations forever. Amen,
- 6:12Speaker 1: he's got that memorized. I don't know if he hasn't memorized,
- 6:15Speaker 1: I'd be impressed. It's actually almost twice as long as that.
- 6:19Speaker 1: But this is this is a snappy game of trivia,
- 6:23Speaker 1: so we cut it down a little. Uh. Did I
- 6:26Speaker 1: catch right that Yeager has been around for thirteen hundred years? No,
- 6:30Speaker 1: that is when Saint Hubert was around. I think Yeager
- 6:34Speaker 1: has been around for about one hundred years. I just
- 6:38Speaker 1: really enjoyed the prayer and it's message just what I
- 6:41Speaker 1: want to say. Now. We also, before our game of
- 6:45Speaker 1: trivia started recording, had see further arguing about the lake question,
- 6:51Speaker 1: calling it all sorts of names as well. Now I
- 6:56Speaker 1: got so dumb. It's as though the guy that came
- 6:58Speaker 1: up with it what must be dumb? Yeah, I got
- 7:00Speaker 1: quite a bit of feedback on that question, but it
- 7:02Speaker 1: wasn't about the question. It was about Steve's attitude. Real question. Yeah,
- 7:06Speaker 1: everybody who wrote in was like, why was Steve so grumpy?
- 7:09Speaker 1: Why does he hate that question? Why does Steve like
- 7:12Speaker 1: if he doesn't know it, get angry expense doesn't know it?
- 7:17Speaker 1: And I'll also point this out. I wasn't even gonna
- 7:19Speaker 1: bring this up until it happened before the game. At
- 7:22Speaker 1: your answer was fort Peck. I think I don't know
- 7:27Speaker 1: your answer was fort Peck, and then you had said
- 7:29Speaker 1: you're like, oh, and I even crossed out flathead. Now
- 7:33Speaker 1: I looked it up here and Fort Peck is actually
- 7:38Speaker 1: eighteenth in size, so that wasn't even close to being right,
- 7:41Speaker 1: and Flathead is thirty so I'm both the counts. You
- 7:45Speaker 1: were quite right, right, but gaslighting me ok. I ask
- 7:54Speaker 1: anyone to take a look at a map and look
- 7:57Speaker 1: at a lake Oahi, which was what number three, and
- 8:01Speaker 1: look at that thing and ask yourself if that's a
- 8:03Speaker 1: lake or a river. Well comes back to if you
- 8:07Speaker 1: count reservoirs in general, though, because then all reservoirs wouldn't count.
- 8:11Speaker 1: That's okay, my gripe with the question was. The only
- 8:14Speaker 1: fair question would have been something like like the three
- 8:20Speaker 1: largest natural lakes like Crater or something. Because these reservoirs
- 8:27Speaker 1: are you have a dam in an impounderment, and it's
- 8:32Speaker 1: like not very fixed. At what point the thing begins.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Some of them run hundreds of miles long, and then
- 8:39Speaker 1: in drought cycles they shrink by one hundred miles. It's
- 8:42Speaker 1: just a bullshit question. But don't you're miss You're you're not,
- 8:45Speaker 1: You're you're misrepresenting. My problem with it, Okay, my problem
- 8:49Speaker 1: with it was, I don't it's just like, just go
- 8:51Speaker 1: with natural lakes. Where does the river and in the
- 8:54Speaker 1: lake start? It's like impossible to determine. And then it's
- 8:57Speaker 1: like you need to get it. Like you said, you
- 8:59Speaker 1: clarified surface area, not volume, which opens it even up
- 9:03Speaker 1: more to like what makes a lake a lake. But
- 9:04Speaker 1: droughts are not unique to reservoirs either, because the reservoirs
- 9:10Speaker 1: are so shallow. Lake of the Woods doesn't change its depth, right,
- 9:14Speaker 1: But like you know, Elephant Butte in New Mexico is
- 9:17Speaker 1: one hundred feet down right now or something like that.
- 9:20Speaker 1: I imagine this won't be the last time we talked
- 9:22Speaker 1: about it. No, I just want to go on record.
- 9:24Speaker 1: You're saying that drought impacts natural lakes as readily as
- 9:29Speaker 1: it does reservoir I didn't say that. I said they're
- 9:31Speaker 1: not unique to reservoirs. That was what I said. Yeah, whatever,
- 9:36Speaker 1: And we are onto our ninth game of trivia. Play
- 9:39Speaker 1: the drought, Phil, Look, I need to know what I
- 9:44Speaker 1: staand to win everything I say, just tend to win everything.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Game on suckers. All right. The first question, as always,
- 10:02Speaker 1: is going to be multiple choice, and the topic is woodsmanship.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Who what is the most common tree in America? Is
- 10:11Speaker 1: it white oak douglas fur, red maple or quaking aspen.
- 10:18Speaker 1: What is the most common tree in America? White oak
- 10:22Speaker 1: douglas for red maple or quaking aspen. And this is
- 10:27Speaker 1: not measuring by volume, This is just the sheer number
- 10:30Speaker 1: of these trees. Stem count stem count. That was North America, America,
- 10:36Speaker 1: the United States, and discounts Hawaii and Alaska, white oak
- 10:43Speaker 1: douglas for red maple or quaking aspen. Does everybody have
- 10:47Speaker 1: an answer? Ye, go ahead and reveal your answers. We
- 10:51Speaker 1: have those are coccaly. I put my thing up. We
- 10:54Speaker 1: have Yannis saying the red maple, Kevin saying the Douglas fur,
- 10:58Speaker 1: Steve saying quaking aspen, Maggie saying the Douglas fur, Brody
- 11:03Speaker 1: saying the Douglas fur, and Sean saying the white oak.
- 11:06Speaker 1: I can tell you who ain't right, Sean. The incorrect
- 11:11Speaker 1: answer is red maple. Yeah, he got it, only only Yani.
- 11:20Speaker 1: There are nearly twenty two chillion red maples in the
- 11:23Speaker 1: United States, according to the Forest Inventory and Analysis. Is
- 11:27Speaker 1: because such a little shit and tree must be. That
- 11:29Speaker 1: is followed by the lob lolly pine, the sweet gum,
- 11:33Speaker 1: and Douglas fur. And although only about four percent of
- 11:36Speaker 1: America's trees are Douglass fur by volume, they are number one,
- 11:40Speaker 1: making up about thirteen percent of the nation's trees when
- 11:43Speaker 1: measured by cubic feet. Can't I tell you why I
- 11:44Speaker 1: used quaking aspen? Absolutely because I felt I was wrong, perhaps,
- 11:50Speaker 1: But growing up, listen, we would call I think that
- 11:56Speaker 1: the quaking aspen exists in a lot of places where
- 11:58Speaker 1: they don't call it quaking aspen. Definitely, like we always
- 12:01Speaker 1: grew up calling we got like a tree called poplar,
- 12:03Speaker 1: and someone was telling me that poplar is like what
- 12:07Speaker 1: I was calling poplar is quaking asks. So then I
- 12:09Speaker 1: got to thinking maybe it's I don't I thought it
- 12:11Speaker 1: was one of them trick questions. Yeah, only went with
- 12:14Speaker 1: the maple because I know that on the property up
- 12:17Speaker 1: there in Wisconsin that I hunt. When we cut the
- 12:20Speaker 1: maples just like take over. They're like the succession like
- 12:23Speaker 1: successional tree that comes in after all the shrubs and stuff,
- 12:28Speaker 1: and they're just super crazy thick. So that's why. Yeah,
- 12:32Speaker 1: Doug's grape was when you log when a log oat,
- 12:36Speaker 1: I don't know why when you log oat you wind
- 12:38Speaker 1: up with a lot of maple. We are onto question
- 12:42Speaker 1: to the topic is hunting in whitetail hunting lingo? What
- 12:47Speaker 1: does the acronym B b D stand for in whitetail lingo?
- 12:54Speaker 1: What does the acronym b b D stand for? You
- 13:03Speaker 1: have a confident room looks like I'm hanging for some
- 13:10Speaker 1: bonus bans. I don't know where achieved bonus points on
- 13:15Speaker 1: the well because I think you could say, maybe, uh,
- 13:20Speaker 1: save it for the band after banter? Does everybody have
- 13:23Speaker 1: an answer for the after banter? Go ahead and reveal
- 13:26Speaker 1: your answers. We have Jannis saying big buck down Kevin
- 13:30Speaker 1: without an answer. See you saying big buck down, big
- 13:33Speaker 1: buck down, big buck down, and big give What about
- 13:38Speaker 1: my own? You're gonna have to explain that one to me. Man,
- 13:44Speaker 1: it's a band or a guy that was Bobby Brown
- 13:47Speaker 1: or someone wasn't it? The correct is a band, right right? Yeah?
- 13:53Speaker 1: The original boy? Yeah? Yeah, yeah, probably yeah. The correct
- 13:56Speaker 1: answer is big buck down. Now. I tried to track
- 13:59Speaker 1: down the origin of EBD. The first ever article I
- 14:02Speaker 1: could find where BBD was written was from the National
- 14:04Speaker 1: and de Association in two thousand and twelve, and the
- 14:07Speaker 1: first form mentioned of BBD I could locate was from
- 14:10Speaker 1: two thousand and nine on bowhunting dot com. Well, I
- 14:12Speaker 1: thought it was before that. Even Lee and Tiffany lecaus
- 14:17Speaker 1: we're using the phrase on their two thousand and seven
- 14:19Speaker 1: show Getting Close with Lee and Tiffany. I reached out
- 14:22Speaker 1: to Tiffany to see if her and Lee were the
- 14:24Speaker 1: genesis of this acronym, and Tiffany said she believes. So
- 14:27Speaker 1: that's what I always thought. That was, like taken as
- 14:29Speaker 1: a matter of course that they invented that, saying it
- 14:32Speaker 1: seemed to know as though no one had asked her
- 14:34Speaker 1: that before. But if you think you know where it
- 14:37Speaker 1: came from before that, even if it wasn't Lee and
- 14:39Speaker 1: Tiffany on their two thousand and seven outdoor show, let
- 14:42Speaker 1: me know prove is wrong. I'd like to see it.
- 14:45Speaker 1: Is that where you're gonna say, honest, yeah, that is hey.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Let me ask you a question. If I send you
- 14:51Speaker 1: a BBD text in November, yeah, and then you're like sweet,
- 14:55Speaker 1: send me a picture. Yeah, And I send you a
- 14:57Speaker 1: picture of that buckeye killed, I will season at Wisconsin.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Are you gonna be like WTF back? Or are you
- 15:04Speaker 1: gonna be like hell, yeah, absolutely, no, I love that
- 15:07Speaker 1: counts absolutely. That cats all right. I'd like to pick
- 15:11Speaker 1: people up if they send me a picture of deer
- 15:13Speaker 1: they killed. I'm always gonna be like, your your number
- 15:15Speaker 1: one hype man. I hope, I hope you felt that
- 15:18Speaker 1: way when you text me pictures of your dear. You
- 15:21Speaker 1: know what I don't like to see, well, never mind,
- 15:23Speaker 1: I don't like to see if deer they're too far
- 15:25Speaker 1: removed from the person, like my cousin's neighbor's cousin, Oh
- 15:31Speaker 1: sure got this buck? Yeah yeah, like unless it's like
- 15:34Speaker 1: an absolute slob, like taking credit for someone else's dear. Yeah,
- 15:43Speaker 1: the the this neighbor got you know, and I was like,
- 15:50Speaker 1: unless it's like a thing where I can't believe it exists,
- 15:53Speaker 1: do you know what I mean? Yeah? You know it's
- 15:55Speaker 1: not fun if you send a picture, uh to somebody
- 15:58Speaker 1: of a deer you killed, and they're like, would have
- 16:00Speaker 1: been a good one next year? Not too bad? The Yeah.
- 16:05Speaker 1: So I always want to like be there for you
- 16:07Speaker 1: on if you send me a picture of a buck,
- 16:09Speaker 1: I'll be like, way to go, be honest, that's great,
- 16:12Speaker 1: amazing deer. They're all big bucks to you. So if
- 16:15Speaker 1: he says BBD, then you text back NB n Y,
- 16:20Speaker 1: which is nice bucks. Next year, we'll get that started.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Question three, the topic is biology. This is an audio question.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Phil is going to play you a thirty second clip
- 16:31Speaker 1: of a vocalization from a North American animal. You need
- 16:34Speaker 1: to tell me what animal you're listening to play the clip. Phil.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Ten seconds in, Steve has an answer. That's the whole thing.
- 17:09Speaker 1: You need to come up with. What critter was making
- 17:12Speaker 1: that noise. That's as much as you get Critter, that's
- 17:15Speaker 1: what you get North America, North America based on those vocalizations. Basically,
- 17:21Speaker 1: anything alive, sure not. It's not a woly mammoth, but
- 17:30Speaker 1: it could be a big foot. I feel like we're
- 17:34Speaker 1: going to see a wide range of answers here. Yeah,
- 17:38Speaker 1: and none of them are gonna make that exact sound.
- 17:42Speaker 1: But it ain't gonna be the right answer. You'd be like, no, yeah,
- 17:45Speaker 1: but I know for sure that animals made that sound. Again,
- 17:51Speaker 1: we had a confidence, Steve, I think, yeah, then I
- 17:54Speaker 1: I don't want to tell you how I arrived at
- 17:57Speaker 1: what I arrived at. I arrived at its wrongness, but
- 18:01Speaker 1: I have no rightness. Does everybody have an answer? Go
- 18:07Speaker 1: ahead and reveal your answers. We have Jannis saying a dop,
- 18:12Speaker 1: Kevin without an answer, Steve saying no answer. Steve, I
- 18:16Speaker 1: didn't have time to write one down. I thought one.
- 18:18Speaker 1: Let me put it down. What were you writing? I'll
- 18:22Speaker 1: put it back. You know it's not right, Steve saying
- 18:26Speaker 1: I can't even read Sika deer, Kevin saying a wal wrist,
- 18:29Speaker 1: Maggie saying an alligator, Brodie saying a baby mountain lion,
- 18:33Speaker 1: and Sean saying a jacker. You guys weren't listening to
- 18:35Speaker 1: the background noise. I can tell you that damn much.
- 18:38Speaker 1: Nobody got it right. The correct answer is a porcupine.
- 18:42Speaker 1: Who really wow. Porcupines have a number of different moans, grunts, coughs, whales, wines, shrieks,
- 18:50Speaker 1: and chatters that they use for everything from mating to eating.
- 18:54Speaker 1: Some of the best comments on this particular video liking
- 18:56Speaker 1: them to a shrieking witch, a crying baby, a squeaky
- 19:00Speaker 1: door hinge, or crazed ewalk. What's an ewokville? They're the
- 19:06Speaker 1: little teddy bear creatures from the Forest Moon of Endor
- 19:09Speaker 1: from the Return of the Jedi kick ass Man. Is
- 19:13Speaker 1: that different than a Chewbacca? Oh yeah, I got it. Listen,
- 19:19Speaker 1: the only noise in the woods is freaked me out
- 19:21Speaker 1: more than a barred owl when I'm not ready to
- 19:24Speaker 1: hear a barred owl early in the morning has been
- 19:26Speaker 1: a porcupine. And the two times that they've freaked me out,
- 19:29Speaker 1: it's been completely different. One just like moaning and groaning
- 19:34Speaker 1: to the point where I was like thought it was
- 19:36Speaker 1: a human that was possibly in trouble, like people coupling
- 19:39Speaker 1: in the bushes. Oh like in trouble. No no, no, no, no, no, no,
- 19:43Speaker 1: yeah sorry bad like negative moaning and groaning. Um, and
- 19:48Speaker 1: it got I was so scared. I walked like I
- 19:51Speaker 1: should have gone to help, but I went the other way.
- 19:53Speaker 1: It was like getting done. I laughed, I left. It
- 19:58Speaker 1: was scary. Another time, it sounded like two women giggling
- 20:04Speaker 1: and laughing, almost like my mom and her sister when
- 20:07Speaker 1: they get together and laugh about nothing. Literally, um is
- 20:11Speaker 1: like that, like uncontrollable laughter, giggling like just and I
- 20:15Speaker 1: went over to the hill and found a porcupine one.
- 20:19Speaker 1: I talked to a game warden once who told me
- 20:20Speaker 1: he'd responded to multiple calls from people that thought they
- 20:23Speaker 1: had heard someone in distress in the woods, but it
- 20:26Speaker 1: was a porcupine. Really, yeah, freak dude. I don't think
- 20:29Speaker 1: I've ever heard one. Huh. Nobody got that one right.
- 20:34Speaker 1: We are on to question for the topic. It's not
- 20:38Speaker 1: time yet for a leaderboard check. I haven't been around
- 20:43Speaker 1: much for the system calls for checking. After five questions
- 20:46Speaker 1: we will get a leaderboard all. Dat question for the
- 20:50Speaker 1: topic is hunting lore. This next great question comes to
- 20:53Speaker 1: us via Cody Miller. If you have a question you
- 20:55Speaker 1: think is right for Meat Eater Trivia, you can send
- 20:57Speaker 1: it to trivia at the meat eater dot com. What
- 21:00Speaker 1: Western State considered declaring the jackalope as its official mythological creature.
- 21:08Speaker 1: What western state considered declaring the jackalope as its official
- 21:14Speaker 1: mythological creature? Do we know what constitutes considered? Like? Did
- 21:18Speaker 1: it okay? Like? Drafted out yes multiple times? Hid your board, Kim,
- 21:27Speaker 1: I have two Just so you know, I have two answers,
- 21:30Speaker 1: and I know one of them is right. I just
- 21:34Speaker 1: don't know which one. Top on Mike Waddell and put
- 21:37Speaker 1: eight answers down at one. I don't know which one
- 21:39Speaker 1: I'm gonna ask Rick as my actual answer. Does everybody
- 21:42Speaker 1: have an answer, Steve, we need to eliminate one. Go
- 21:51Speaker 1: ahead and reveal your answers. We have Jannis saying the
- 21:54Speaker 1: good Dakota, Kevin saying Nevada, Steve saying Wyoming, Maggie saying Wyoming,
- 22:00Speaker 1: Brody saying Wyoming, and Sean saying Wyoming. Wyoming is the
- 22:03Speaker 1: correct I don't know why I erased Wyoming. The first
- 22:10Speaker 1: ever jackalope was created in nineteen thirty nine by a
- 22:13Speaker 1: taxidermist in Douglas, Wyoming. Multiple times since then, bills have
- 22:17Speaker 1: been introduced there that would declare the jackalope in official
- 22:21Speaker 1: state symbol. When it happened in two thousand and five,
- 22:23Speaker 1: Representative Dave Edwards pushed for it to pass because he
- 22:27Speaker 1: said it would certainly boost the tourism industry, which has
- 22:30Speaker 1: a lot of gift shops and sells all kinds of
- 22:32Speaker 1: different jackalopes. But I don't know about that. That's not
- 22:38Speaker 1: gonna like make someone's business. So my roommate actually owns
- 22:42Speaker 1: one of those jackalopes and it's like this big one
- 22:45Speaker 1: of what jackalopes that comes from that shop. Oh and
- 22:48Speaker 1: then they have like giant ones, like the all ranges
- 22:52Speaker 1: of sizes, so it's not based off a real rabbit.
- 22:54Speaker 1: It is all real jack rabbit it so it's like
- 22:57Speaker 1: the big whitier jack or black till. Yeah, kind of.
- 23:00Speaker 1: Karin was just showing me the Rogue Taxidermy some of
- 23:03Speaker 1: that last night. Yeah, it's kind of like that. They
- 23:06Speaker 1: just gluesome horns on top, Maggie. That's made out of
- 23:11Speaker 1: a snowshoe here. It's pretty awesome. His name is Steve actually,
- 23:13Speaker 1: so I didn't name it after you. Who's jackalope is upstairs?
- 23:17Speaker 1: That was one that we purchased. Were filming, Yeah, we
- 23:21Speaker 1: were filming video the nome measuring the he was measuring
- 23:25Speaker 1: to jacklobe, right, question was scoring. We will get a
- 23:30Speaker 1: score update after this one. The topic is cooking. What
- 23:35Speaker 1: Mexican dish roughly translates to little donkey in Spanish? What
- 23:43Speaker 1: Mexican dish roughly translates to little donkey in Spanish. I
- 23:49Speaker 1: don't think Steve has come up with an answer yet.
- 23:51Speaker 1: The rest of the room rough seems like they know it. Again.
- 23:58Speaker 1: What Mexican dish roughly translates to little donkey in Spanish? Maggie,
- 24:03Speaker 1: do you have a jackal up on your water bot?
- 24:05Speaker 1: I do? Okay? Does everybody have an answer? If they don't,
- 24:11Speaker 1: they're screwed. Not directed at anybody specifically Steve. We're giving
- 24:21Speaker 1: Steve all kinds of extra time today. I'll struggle today, man,
- 24:26Speaker 1: I got that long COVID, bring for I got I
- 24:30Speaker 1: think I got long COVID. No, go ahead and reveal
- 24:32Speaker 1: your answers. We have Jannis saying, oh, that's what I
- 24:35Speaker 1: want to put Chico, Kevin saying I can't Steve without
- 24:39Speaker 1: an answer, Maggie saying burrito, burrito, burrito, that's pretty donkey.
- 24:48Speaker 1: What is it, lady donkey? Man? The correct answer is Burrito's.
- 24:54Speaker 1: I can't believe how bad I am Juan Mendes is
- 24:58Speaker 1: credited with naming the during the Mexican Revolution between nineteen
- 25:02Speaker 1: ten and nineteen twenty. Supposedly, Mendes rode around on a
- 25:05Speaker 1: donkey selling tacos and rapped them in extra large flower
- 25:09Speaker 1: tortillas to keep them warm. Soon thereafter, locals started referring
- 25:13Speaker 1: to these meals as the food of the donkey. Learned
- 25:17Speaker 1: something new every day. It was too easy. That's why
- 25:21Speaker 1: I missed it. So I'm super too easy. Questions too obvious, Phil,
- 25:26Speaker 1: Let's get a scoreboard update. In third place, we have
- 25:29Speaker 1: Kevin Gillespie with one point. Tied for second are Steve
- 25:33Speaker 1: and Janus with two, and then Maggie, Brodie and Sean
- 25:37Speaker 1: are tied for first with three points. Anybody's game, man,
- 25:41Speaker 1: Anybody's game? How many questions we got left? We are
- 25:44Speaker 1: halfway through the game. I'm coming for you this week.
- 25:47Speaker 1: I told you Brodie. Yeah, well, Brodie had an advantage.
- 25:51Speaker 1: He was. He stayed sharp before we got in here
- 25:53Speaker 1: because him and Hayden were arguing about spawning Steelhead or something. Yeah,
- 25:58Speaker 1: what was the argument that steel There wasn't really an argument.
- 26:02Speaker 1: Hayden was trying to say that steel had only spawned
- 26:04Speaker 1: in the spring. What was your argument that they are
- 26:09Speaker 1: different they spawn at different times. They don't all spawn
- 26:12Speaker 1: in the spring. What's the latest year? Can belated in
- 26:17Speaker 1: the hatches to spawn? You can, I'm out here him
- 26:20Speaker 1: spawn like in June? Right, But I mean do they
- 26:24Speaker 1: they're still at the spawn in November and Lake Erie?
- 26:27Speaker 1: There is that the ones that run out of Lake
- 26:29Speaker 1: Erie they're going up there to spawn or go up
- 26:30Speaker 1: there to snack on stuff. No, they're gonna they're they're
- 26:33Speaker 1: spate streams, so they've just run up to spawn. It's
- 26:35Speaker 1: like a false spawn. They don't do. Yeah. Anyway, we
- 26:38Speaker 1: had we had Brody running hot before the game of trivia.
- 26:40Speaker 1: Yeah he's sure he was using right, ay Sean, if
- 26:43Speaker 1: you win, and I'll think you will. What are you
- 26:46Speaker 1: gonna what are you gonna donate to? Uh? Delta okay, yeah,
- 26:50Speaker 1: Delta water foam Yeah no, yeah, taking my five hundred
- 26:56Speaker 1: bucks and going on a trip. We are on too.
- 27:08Speaker 1: Question six. The topic is conservation. Which major North American
- 27:13Speaker 1: flyaway starts near Greenland and follows the East coast until
- 27:17Speaker 1: it hits the Caribbean. Really, which major North American flyaway
- 27:24Speaker 1: starts near Greenland? And follows the East coast until it
- 27:28Speaker 1: hits the Caribbean. We have a lot of fast answers
- 27:32Speaker 1: in the room. Steve seems to think it was too easy. No,
- 27:35Speaker 1: I don't know. Oh, I don't know. I think it's
- 27:40Speaker 1: I might be made to look a fool year And
- 27:41Speaker 1: does everybody have an answer? Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 27:44Speaker 1: We have Atlantic, Atlantic, Atlantic, Atlantic. Everybody says Atlantic. That
- 27:49Speaker 1: is correct. It was gonna be like Eastern Ye. I've
- 27:55Speaker 1: in the podcast we were just doing referenced this. Oh
- 27:59Speaker 1: really yeah. The Atlantic Flyaway is about three thousand miles
- 28:02Speaker 1: long and is the easternmost flyaway in North America. It's
- 28:05Speaker 1: the most densely populated flyaway of the four, making its
- 28:08Speaker 1: greatest threats urban sprawl in industrial development. Some notable stops
- 28:13Speaker 1: in this flyaway include Acadia National Park, Cape Cod National Seashore,
- 28:17Speaker 1: Delaware Bay, and Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge. I will
- 28:22Speaker 1: add to that that just in general, the chess Peak
- 28:24Speaker 1: Bay is like one of the most important wintering grounds.
- 28:28Speaker 1: Just adding to it, That's why I would say here
- 28:31Speaker 1: question seven, the topic is woodsmanship. This next great question comes.
- 28:35Speaker 1: It is via Clayton Crockett If you have a question
- 28:37Speaker 1: you think is right from meat Eator trivia, you can
- 28:40Speaker 1: send it to trivia to meatator dot com. What tick
- 28:44Speaker 1: is responsible for passing alpha gal syndrome to humans which
- 28:48Speaker 1: causes a red meat allergy? Again a very confident room.
- 28:54Speaker 1: What tick is responsible for passing alpha gal syndrome to
- 28:58Speaker 1: humans which causes a red meat allergy? I didn't hear
- 29:06Speaker 1: the first part of that. I just wrote down tick
- 29:14Speaker 1: coming up on tick season soon. No, does everybody have
- 29:18Speaker 1: an answer? Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have
- 29:23Speaker 1: Jannis saying the lone Star, the lone Star, the lone Star.
- 29:27Speaker 1: Maggie sang the Texas tick. Brodie sang lone Star and
- 29:30Speaker 1: lone Star. Lone Star is correct. But I would also
- 29:34Speaker 1: accept dear tick. While the lone Star tick is the
- 29:37Speaker 1: primary source for alpha gel syndrome, some recent studies have
- 29:40Speaker 1: shown that dear ticks can transmit it as well. There
- 29:43Speaker 1: are about four thousand cases of alpha gel syndrome in
- 29:45Speaker 1: the United States per year, with no known cure. The
- 29:49Speaker 1: most high risk areas are portions of the Southeast and
- 29:51Speaker 1: New England. Lone Star in New England. Evan hay For
- 29:57Speaker 1: had it fades. Mmmm, so he he's not allergic to
- 30:00Speaker 1: red meat anymore. It's it's it's effects are diminishing. Huh, yeah,
- 30:04Speaker 1: it's fading. We are onto question Nate. We'll get another
- 30:08Speaker 1: scoreboard update after this. The topic is fishing. Orvis declared
- 30:13Speaker 1: this the world's most recognizable and most fished streamer of
- 30:17Speaker 1: all time. It can loosely imitate crayfish, minnows, sculpins, leeches, helgramite,
- 30:23Speaker 1: and other natural foods that fish love to eat. Again,
- 30:28Speaker 1: Orvis declared this the world's most recognizable and most fished
- 30:32Speaker 1: streamer of all time. When did they declare that you
- 30:38Speaker 1: can't ask you? They don't. You can't do that kind
- 30:40Speaker 1: of stuff. I know, but the answer would have been
- 30:42Speaker 1: different fifty years ago. Does everybody have an answer? Confident
- 30:50Speaker 1: room again, three in a row, going to feel your answers.
- 30:53Speaker 1: We have Jannis saying wooly bugger, Kevin without an answer,
- 30:56Speaker 1: Steve saying wooly bugger, wooly bugger, wooly bugger, and shauns
- 31:00Speaker 1: saying the which is what you use to tire wooly bugger?
- 31:03Speaker 1: The correct don't give it to him bugger. In the
- 31:07Speaker 1: nineteen the professional's favorite flies. Bill Hunter says the wooly
- 31:13Speaker 1: bugger is so effective it should be banned from some
- 31:15Speaker 1: water sheds. I suspect its effectiveness is due to its
- 31:19Speaker 1: resemblance of so many edible creatures in the water. Its
- 31:22Speaker 1: tail undulating behind a fiber bubble filled body is just
- 31:27Speaker 1: too much for most fish to resist. He's suggested it's
- 31:30Speaker 1: like those infomercials for that lure. It's illegal, and like
- 31:35Speaker 1: that's illegal, and like thirteen states, it's so good. Phil
- 31:40Speaker 1: hit us with a scoreboard update. In third place three points,
- 31:43Speaker 1: Kevin Gillespie tied for second. We have a three way tie.
- 31:47Speaker 1: It's Steve, Maggie and Shawn of five and then in
- 31:51Speaker 1: first places. How many six points? I'm in last right now?
- 32:00Speaker 1: Oh wait, sorry, honest, I forgot you. It's a four
- 32:03Speaker 1: way type for second. You also have five? Okay, thank you. Sorry.
- 32:06Speaker 1: So Brody's got six. Four people have five. We need
- 32:09Speaker 1: Brody to stumble. Yeah, I need a lot of people
- 32:11Speaker 1: to stump Texas tick thing. Got me. We have two
- 32:15Speaker 1: questions left. Nine. The topic is biology. What is the
- 32:20Speaker 1: condition called when an organism has an increased amount of
- 32:23Speaker 1: black pigmentation in its skin, feathers, or hair. What is
- 32:30Speaker 1: the condition called when an organism has an increased amount
- 32:33Speaker 1: a black pigmentation in its skin, feathers, or hair. I
- 32:38Speaker 1: don't think Brody's getting this one wrong. What what do
- 32:40Speaker 1: you think is he? Is he cocky? Over there? I
- 32:42Speaker 1: think I had a minor stumble, but then I got
- 32:45Speaker 1: I can't I can't see what's going on because because
- 32:47Speaker 1: of Maggie's microphone? Was it cocky? Initially it was confusion,
- 32:52Speaker 1: but then I got cocky? Yeah, confusion turned cockiness. Does
- 32:57Speaker 1: everybody have an answer? Gavin's not playing. That's why I
- 33:05Speaker 1: stopped playing too. We have Janni saying melanistic melanistic hyper
- 33:10Speaker 1: pigmentation from Maggie Brody's damn it? What did you originally
- 33:14Speaker 1: start to? Right? I almost started writing correct problem. Brodie
- 33:19Speaker 1: says melanistic and Sean says melanistic. That is the correct answer.
- 33:24Speaker 1: Many animals experience melanisms, such as squirrels, snakes, owls, bass
- 33:28Speaker 1: and maths. In twenty twenty, Sam Longeren wrote about a
- 33:31Speaker 1: very rare melanistic turkey that was killed by a hunter
- 33:34Speaker 1: in organ bi. I'll just estimate that it's present and
- 33:37Speaker 1: only about one out of every fifty thousand wild turkeys.
- 33:40Speaker 1: If you want to read about that gobbler and see
- 33:42Speaker 1: the pictures of it, you can find it on the
- 33:43Speaker 1: media dot com titled ultru rare color faced turkey killed
- 33:47Speaker 1: in Organ. Hmm, my buddy killed a drake Mallard that
- 33:51Speaker 1: was melanistic and its whole body is like charcoal black,
- 33:55Speaker 1: but then the head is still a dark enough pigmentation
- 33:57Speaker 1: where it's green. So he got this grade of black
- 34:00Speaker 1: and the green's pretty pretty cool he did. Yeah, we
- 34:05Speaker 1: are onto the last question, which Brody has to get wrong.
- 34:08Speaker 1: So if he gets it wrong, we're gonna go into overtime.
- 34:11Speaker 1: We would need Steve well, assuming Steve gets it right,
- 34:14Speaker 1: and assuming who else is there. Sean and Yanni also
- 34:18Speaker 1: have six points. Okay, so Steve, Sean, Yanni get it right.
- 34:22Speaker 1: Brody get it wrong and we could have a four
- 34:23Speaker 1: way tiebreaker, which we've never had more than two people
- 34:26Speaker 1: in the tiebreaker. Try to think of something Brodie don't know.
- 34:32Speaker 1: The topic is public Lands. This next great question comes
- 34:36Speaker 1: to is via Eric Klein. If you have a question
- 34:38Speaker 1: you think he's right from mediator Trivia, you can send
- 34:40Speaker 1: it to Trivia at the meadeater dot com. Ten states
- 34:44Speaker 1: don't have a national forest named two of them. Ten
- 34:50Speaker 1: states don't have a national forest named two of them.
- 34:55Speaker 1: Brody is thinking hard again. We would need Brody to
- 35:04Speaker 1: get this wrong, plus Steve, Sean or Yannis get it right.
- 35:09Speaker 1: Let's go to the tiebreaker. Ten states don't have a
- 35:15Speaker 1: national for No, I need you to name two of them.
- 35:21Speaker 1: Maybe I shouldn't be so confident one will not work.
- 35:28Speaker 1: There's no partial credit given. Brody's still writing. He's nervous.
- 35:41Speaker 1: I think if they all three get it wrong and
- 35:43Speaker 1: I get this right, I think I just made a mistake.
- 35:45Speaker 1: Change all of us here. You might be the most
- 35:48Speaker 1: traveled hunter I think in the past three d sixty
- 35:50Speaker 1: five days. So everybody have an answer. Oh man, I'm
- 35:54Speaker 1: not really happy with Go ahead and reveal them. We
- 35:56Speaker 1: have the honest saying Maryland and Connecticut, Kevin saying Florida
- 36:00Speaker 1: and Hawaii, Steve saying Texas and Florida, Maggie saying Iowa
- 36:04Speaker 1: in Ohio, Brody saying Kansas and Texas he crossed out
- 36:07Speaker 1: North Dakota, and Sean saying Iowa in Kansas. The ten
- 36:12Speaker 1: states are Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey,
- 36:20Speaker 1: North Dakota, and Rhode Island. We have a first time
- 36:37Speaker 1: should not have second guess in mediator trivia history. Brody
- 36:41Speaker 1: had it written down and crossed it out. What did
- 36:43Speaker 1: you did you swap it out? Texas? Brodie's stumbled. Brody's like, uh,
- 36:49Speaker 1: for the Olympics just faltered pressure some Uh what about
- 36:55Speaker 1: the Olympics? Are you referencing a ski racer right now? Ye?
- 36:59Speaker 1: Who were? Like? Who didn't paid at the whole story
- 37:03Speaker 1: about me that night that that happened that I haven't
- 37:06Speaker 1: to be tuned in because it was playing behind me.
- 37:09Speaker 1: Michaela schiffering I never heard, but I started to really
- 37:11Speaker 1: fall in love with her. They're really building it up,
- 37:14Speaker 1: and then she just rob me. Your Brody right there?
- 37:17Speaker 1: I didn't even know what the national force in Texas is. Yeah, Sam,
- 37:22Speaker 1: we are onto the tiebreaker, which we have Brody, Janie
- 37:26Speaker 1: and Sean competing for. This is one of those silly
- 37:29Speaker 1: guests and number questions, a nu miracle question. Whoever's closest
- 37:34Speaker 1: thing will be declared the winners topic like these because
- 37:38Speaker 1: it gives you like a winner. Yeah, there's no two winners.
- 37:43Speaker 1: The topic is fishing, according to a twenty twenty survey,
- 37:49Speaker 1: what percentage of American anglers exclusively fish for saltwater species only?
- 37:55Speaker 1: Read it again. I'm not playing, I just want to
- 37:58Speaker 1: make sure i'm according to a twenty twenty survey, what
- 38:01Speaker 1: percentage of American anglers exclusively fish for saltwater species only?
- 38:12Speaker 1: We have folks thinking hard. I would argue that they
- 38:15Speaker 1: didn't survey me, So how do they know that you're
- 38:18Speaker 1: set up the best to get this one right? And
- 38:20Speaker 1: Sean would be the furthest removed from getting this one
- 38:24Speaker 1: was that Saldakodain who haunts waterfowl. That's good point. A
- 38:31Speaker 1: Pennsylvanian who's lived all over and guided fishermen. I hate
- 38:36Speaker 1: this question. Jannis has an answer that he wrote down
- 38:40Speaker 1: pretty fast. Your money if you win decimal points round
- 38:48Speaker 1: number broody, where's your money going? If you win? Yanni's
- 38:52Speaker 1: doing wild cheet. You know, I'd like to do something local, like, uh,
- 38:55Speaker 1: what's that Lower Yellowstone River coalition they're trying to open
- 38:59Speaker 1: up you know that one. Nope, they're trying to open
- 39:02Speaker 1: up like public access on the Lower yellow Stone. So
- 39:05Speaker 1: I think that's what's called you're gonna if you win,
- 39:07Speaker 1: that's where your money's going. Sean's going delta waterfall, Yan,
- 39:10Speaker 1: he's going wild cheap. And to make sure that we
- 39:12Speaker 1: have a winner, we don't have to go to another tiebreaker,
- 39:14Speaker 1: right to the decimal point because the answer is to
- 39:18Speaker 1: the decimal That's really smart. God, dang it a lot
- 39:27Speaker 1: of pressure. Do all three of you have an answer?
- 39:33Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your m We have Jannis saying
- 39:36Speaker 1: six point five, Brody saying thirty point three, and Sean
- 39:42Speaker 1: saying five sing all the big cities on the coast.
- 39:45Speaker 1: I'll tell you Brody is out of the game. It
- 39:49Speaker 1: was only I hear you. I heard the question. Oh sorry, sorry, sorry,
- 39:57Speaker 1: what would load to step down out of a download? Two? Two? Yeah?
- 40:01Speaker 1: Because what kind of fisherman is like, I'm not I'm
- 40:04Speaker 1: gonna go. Has anyone in this room been surveyed ask
- 40:08Speaker 1: that question? So Brody is out, We're down to Jannie
- 40:14Speaker 1: and Sean. Come on, sheep baby, let's go our winner.
- 40:18Speaker 1: It's Yannis. He correct answer? Was it? Eleven point six?
- 40:25Speaker 1: Roughly seven Roughly seventy percent of fishermen or fresh water.
- 40:31Speaker 1: Only about eighteen percent fish both fresh and salt, and
- 40:34Speaker 1: then about twelve percent are exclusively salt water. How many
- 40:38Speaker 1: do both? Uh? Eighteen percent? Only eighteen percent that check?
- 40:42Speaker 1: Oh yeah, both them? Okay, guys, wow, that doesn't No
- 40:45Speaker 1: percent are strictly fresh again eleven point excuse me, seventy
- 40:49Speaker 1: strictly fresh. Strictly fresh. Congratulations, only even gotten burrito stayed
- 40:59Speaker 1: with it. The Holy bugger one really eats me up.
- 41:04Speaker 1: She stayed with it. He played a strong game, he
- 41:07Speaker 1: got out ahead of early, right, stay, kept the lead.
- 41:13Speaker 1: Trying to think of things that sports commentators came from
- 41:18Speaker 1: behind victory in overtime now a year victory from the
- 41:22Speaker 1: jaws of defeat a year ago. Do you think you
- 41:24Speaker 1: would have donated to the Wild Cheap Foundation? Oh geez,
- 41:28Speaker 1: uh no, just because of my recent sheep hunt. She's
- 41:34Speaker 1: awaken experience. She's the great sheep awakening all right, So
