- 0:00[SPEAKER_00]: Alright, just got back to the bay from Seattle, riding back home from Levi Stadium, playing got back around 830 and a long weekend, but a lot to talk about from this game.
- 0:14[SPEAKER_00]: So I just want to hit a few quick highlights, busy weekend for me, went from Penn State Saturday, the flights were all great, got to Seattle around 1030, 11 on Saturday night.
- 0:24[SPEAKER_00]: And, uh, took the first bus to first time to Luminfield, I got to tell you a few things.
- 0:30[SPEAKER_00]: I asked a couple people, like, am I allowed to say this place is awesome?
- 0:34[SPEAKER_00]: It's awesome.
- 0:35[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, that stadium is awesome.
- 0:36[SPEAKER_00]: I'd never been there.
- 0:36[SPEAKER_00]: I know a lot of you guys probably have, but I'd never been there and you sit out and the things starts filling up and, uh, the whole, not the whole, but most of the lower section on the far side of the field behind the United States bench was, was 49ers fans.
- 0:49[SPEAKER_00]: that felt like the kind of game that others found ways to lose last year and I think it might be a precursor for the type of year that it's going to be just in the sense that you're going to have to win those games grindy kind of I don't I kind of feel like classic older Seattle games but like the classic Seattle nighter games with neither team was quite ready to win a championship
- 1:11[SPEAKER_00]: But we'll see.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_00]: I think that team can really rush the passer in Jackson Smith in Jig was really good.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_00]: That game if they have Gino and DK might go a different way, but they don't have Gino and DK that Jackson Smith and Jig but ate him up, but then honors made some key defensive plays when they had to.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I think that one of the big, one of the early 2025 stories, if you think about what was one of the early 2025 stories for the 40 matters, it was the schedule.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_00]: And then 15 other things happened, contracts, and injuries, and the concern really turned to whether this team was good enough to win enough games to make the playoffs is good enough.
- 1:54[SPEAKER_00]: And it's legitimate.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, we'll see.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_00]: I think they are.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_00]: But I think you got to go back to the fundamental thing that kind of this offseason or this season started with, which is the schedule.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_00]: Those two team, the Ravens and the Bills are not on the 40m schedule this year, and you can't do that every year.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_00]: You're not going to get a last play schedule.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_00]: You hope every year.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_00]: But when you do, and I know the last play schedule is not everything.
- 2:24[SPEAKER_00]: People always remind me, like, that's only a couple of games, which is true.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_00]: It's only a few games that really, you know, the other stuff is set.
- 2:30[SPEAKER_00]: It's true.
- 2:32[SPEAKER_00]: We'll put it this way then the whole thing fit together the last place schedule plus the schedule rotation then I was had it fit together and That's not a part of this day You know this day was a divisional game and then I am just were one in five and divisional games and lost the four of them by 13 total points combined
- 2:52[SPEAKER_00]: But I think this game was kind of representative of some of the games you'll see this year where you're not playing a top three or four or five quarterback and your defense is going to have a chance to hold the opponent to, you know, under 20 points and your offense may be can get away with some mistakes or your team can get away with some mistakes that you can't get away with when you're playing last year schedule.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_00]: So, even though this was a divisional game, I think that was, it was a reminder of that.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_00]: I think maybe it was an indication of that.
- 3:24[SPEAKER_00]: Niners had critical penalties, a couple of bad interceptions, the second one in particular, you know, Kyle Shanahan said after the game, he did not see.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_00]: Kyle seemed like he was in the glow of victory after the game.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_00]: after what had to be a It's there's so many moments.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_00]: You know the reactions we call in the game on TV We're right next to the Fox television booth.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_00]: I could see in there.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_00]: I could see all their monitors They got some great my it's really cool set up in there for Joe Davis and Greg Olson Greg has a couple of
- 3:55[SPEAKER_00]: monitors that are on delay, which is cool.
- 3:57[SPEAKER_00]: So he's got like a monitor that's the all 22 but it's on a couple second delay.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_00]: So we can watch the play and then see the old 22 and then the replay comes on TV.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_00]: So I got to I could kind of peek over and see some of what they had and we had the TV broadcast in front of us and so we saw Kyle Shanna hands reactions after the 27 yard miss field goal, the moody and then the blocked field goal I couldn't believe when I blocked that field goal.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_00]: I should mention, a lot of you know this, I called my first 49ers game on the radio today with Tim Ryan and we had a great time.
- 4:30[SPEAKER_00]: It was fun.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_00]: It was a lot of fun.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_00]: I'm feeling in for Craig Poppett today, but you know, by the end it just felt like,
- 4:40[SPEAKER_00]: the margin so thin, however you got to win it and Kyle Shanahan understands that very well, but anyway, I said all that that started because I was talking about Brock's second interception.
- 4:50[SPEAKER_00]: The first one is trying to layer throw sometimes you land the throw, it's the one you don't land the throw, but the second one I thought was a wild decision.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and, you know, against the best teams in the league, I think you can't get away with that and win.
- 5:09[SPEAKER_00]: And with so many of these games early in the year on the road and you're waiting till the midway, you know, whenever it is branded, I used to come back.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_00]: Um,
- 5:20[SPEAKER_00]: You hope there's been this kind of theory that some people have which actually I think it's a good theory I'm not knocking it.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just acknowledging that it's I'm not originating it that it's a thing that's out there that this team will You don't improve as the year goes on because of youth and think there's something to that up to Stout felt like got better as the game went along.
- 5:40[SPEAKER_00]: You had a tough matchup today
- 5:42[SPEAKER_00]: Marky Seagull made some plays, Marky Seagull's six tackles second on the team.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_00]: You don't always want your safety, but you know, to be near the top in tackles, but Fred Warner played big and Nick Bosa played big.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, we'll see, I haven't watched, I haven't watched the tape back.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_00]: I'd be inch, I'll be interested to watch it back and watch my Cow Williams back, but
- 6:08[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's just going to, I think it's going to be like that.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_00]: Now this week you get Spencer Rattler, but you're on the road in New Orleans.
- 6:14[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, what kind of games that can be?
- 6:16[SPEAKER_00]: Arizona back at home.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_00]: You know, they're good.
- 6:19[SPEAKER_00]: That's, that's one of the better quarterback you're going to face all year.
- 6:21[SPEAKER_00]: Do you have to play perfect football to beat them probably not, but you know, they're probably, I've said, they're probably like Seattle with maybe a little Seattle's defense of front is so good.
- 6:33[SPEAKER_00]: Kyler gives you a little ceiling that Sam Darnal doesn't that Gino Smith didn't.
- 6:38[SPEAKER_00]: Other big headline Robert Solas return, I mean I think that's what I think about like Monday, what everyone's going to be talking about, I think it's going to be that Nick Post a big play at the end.
- 6:48[SPEAKER_00]: but Robert sometimes they beat the blitz sometimes they beat the pressure but as that game went along it felt early like Seattle was just going to be able to pound the 49ers with the run and then the diners got some big negative plays early in some Seattle drives and it was a it was a big Robert solid day today the other guy
- 7:09[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, we have so many takes, so many things we talk about.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_00]: Some are right, some are wrong.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_00]: I got two today that I feel like, I can't do today that I feel like, this is what I've been talking about for two, three weeks.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_00]: One has been, I've been talking about for a month.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_00]: The last one I've been talking, the first thing I'm going to say here is about deep winners.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_00]: And for the last week and half, you know, doing interviews and people asked me, like, who's the young guy you're looking for?
- 7:32[SPEAKER_00]: I've been asked that question many times.
- 7:34[SPEAKER_00]: Who's a key player on defense, that sort of thing?
- 7:39[SPEAKER_00]: You know, there's a lot of good answers.
- 7:40[SPEAKER_00]: My answer to the last week and half has been D-Winners feels like a forgotten player.
- 7:45[SPEAKER_00]: Last year all the defensive rookies come in, Malik and Mustafa, Ronaldo, Green, and meet it in fact.
- 7:52[SPEAKER_00]: This year, it happens again, like I'll see Jay West and Mike Hellwilling Ems and Mark East, Seagull, an opt-in-stout and Kinnick Martin, who was an active today, Kinnick Martin, take the job from D-Winners.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_00]: and it just feels like in your three, he always had the high end, and now he's putting the fundamental part of the game together that, um...
- 8:17[SPEAKER_00]: that gives him a real chance.
- 8:19[SPEAKER_00]: He had, there was, again, we got to watch, we had to grind the tape back, but there was, I don't remember a play today that you went, oh, D-Winter's was in the wrong place, or D-Winter's was a little out of controller, oh, D-Winter's over and that.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_00]: He made some big plays.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_00]: He seemed to be more under control while not losing the thing that makes him potentially special.
- 8:42[SPEAKER_00]: So, that was one of the big headlines, offense.
- 8:48[SPEAKER_00]: Do you went without Christian McAfrey?
- 8:49[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, as a receiver, he is so impactful and it was good to see Brian Johnson get used the way he did.
- 9:00[SPEAKER_00]: If you would told me Brian Johnson, well, the final stats here.
- 9:03[SPEAKER_00]: If you would tell me Brian Johnson, nine carries.
- 9:05[SPEAKER_00]: I wouldn't have thought that McAfrey at 31 touches.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_00]: Again, nine catches McAfrey in 10 targets and 22 carries.
- 9:14[SPEAKER_00]: What, for 142 total yards, no touchdowns, but it just felt like he had so many big, big, big catches, big conversions, big moments were pretty new.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_00]: He could go to him, Brock was under a lot of pressure today.
- 9:29[SPEAKER_00]: I think I don't have an autonomy on the move here, but on the plan, I saw some next gen stat that,
- 9:34[SPEAKER_00]: was pretty under the most pressure or maybe the most complete the best completion percentage under pressure today or something like that.
- 9:41[SPEAKER_00]: He was under a lot of heat and, you know, early in that game, I was really concerned about the 49ers offensive line.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_00]: You know, maybe you take some solace in the fact that that's just a really good Seattle front and a really good defensive coach and you're not going to see that every week.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_00]: But Perti did not have a lot of great pockets on the first half.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_00]: I felt like in the second half it got a little better in some key spots, but this is a point about McAfrey first.
- 10:11[SPEAKER_00]: Like Christian.
- 10:14[SPEAKER_00]: My heart sank on Thursday night when I was in state college Pennsylvania.
- 10:21[SPEAKER_00]: on my way to dinner, and I got a text message about McAfrey, and I called Tim Ryan, texted Tim Ryan right away, and he called me, and I just didn't know, you know, you see that happen, and you got, oh no, and then here we are three, four days later, and he's got 31 touches, and you know, you don't win the game without him.
- 10:42[SPEAKER_00]: You don't win the game without him.
- 10:43[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, you don't win the game without him.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_00]: So,
- 10:46[SPEAKER_00]: Does he need 31 touches every week?
- 10:48[SPEAKER_00]: You hope not because But here's the other thing.
- 10:52[SPEAKER_00]: It's just like there's not a lot.
- 10:53[SPEAKER_00]: Once the Jannings got hurt The 49ers down the stretch.
- 10:58[SPEAKER_00]: It's Russell Gage and Mark his Valdez Markete Valdez Gantling And Luke Ferrell who's never caught a touchdown pass
- 11:13[SPEAKER_00]: First of all, the Niners only touched it on pass for most of the game was to the Titan George Kittle and then Kittle goes out and all they have left are two titans who have never caught up pass in the end zone.
- 11:24[SPEAKER_00]: Look for else, never caught a Titan on pass.
- 11:26[SPEAKER_00]: Jake Tangis has never caught up pass.
- 11:28[SPEAKER_00]: Jake Tangis hasn't been targeted in two years.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_00]: He had at one target in his career, it was in September of 2023 and he caught three passes on the Game Winning Drive.
- 11:40[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that's ridiculous, I thought he was throw, I don't want to, so what I said on the air was, and I don't know that I was great today, we're, we're having fun though.
- 11:53[SPEAKER_00]: But what I said on the air was, um,
- 11:57[SPEAKER_00]: It wasn't the catch, but it sure was a heck of a catch, because it just felt, of course, it's not Dwight's catch, and it's not the catch, too.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_00]: Of course, that goes without saying, but I'm gonna say it, because if I don't say it, feel like, how could you say that?
- 12:13[SPEAKER_00]: Understandably.
- 12:14[SPEAKER_00]: But here's what was similar about it to me.
- 12:18[SPEAKER_00]: I was not there for the catch, but I've seen the video and people describe it like it was some people who were there, I've told the stories like, you know, it was going out of bounds.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_00]: So this ball that Purdy throws, you know, the nighters are going left to right on the field.
- 12:33[SPEAKER_00]: So we're in the box, the place coming to the near side end zone to where I'm calling it.
- 12:40[SPEAKER_00]: And there's like a, there's a post there in a window that 49ers coaches are in the next box over.
- 12:46[SPEAKER_00]: And that plate took forever, and Brock lets it go, and I thought it was going out of bounds.
- 12:54[SPEAKER_00]: And then I thought it was getting intercepted.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_00]: And I thought those were the only two things that were about to happen.
- 13:02[SPEAKER_00]: And then Jake Tan just came out of nowhere and made
- 13:07[SPEAKER_00]: The greatest catch of his career, and it was the third catch of his career, and it was the third catch on that drive, and the first touch on catch of his NFL career, which is incredible, and he's from Los Gatos, and went to Cal, and that's just amazing, but I thought that ball was going out of bounds, and I definitely thought it was getting picked, and then Tom just came out of nowhere, so an incredible highlight.
- 13:27[SPEAKER_00]: an incredible highlight.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_00]: And then the other thing I mentioned the D-Winners, the other thing that I felt like we were right about a lot was Ricky Purcell.
- 13:35[SPEAKER_00]: Ricky and Brock have it a connection.
- 13:37[SPEAKER_00]: I think that second interception might have been because Brock really trusted him.
- 13:41[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe, you know, if you're going to give Brock any grace on that one, it would just be that
- 13:59[SPEAKER_00]: on the other side of the field so we'll have to we'll have to check that but maybe it was maybe it was a result of just the amount of trust that pretty has it in Ricky P. But did you see it finally happened?
- 14:13[SPEAKER_00]: The Natters hit a 45-yard vertical go ball in crunch time.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_00]: Probably not.
- 14:18[SPEAKER_00]: Truly a go ball.
- 14:19[SPEAKER_00]: I got to go back and look at the route.
- 14:20[SPEAKER_00]: But the ball that pretty threw the Ricky Pierce all perfectly thrown.
- 14:26[SPEAKER_00]: Perfectly thrown.
- 14:28[SPEAKER_00]: Just missed the defender's arm.
- 14:30[SPEAKER_00]: Defender had it perfectly covered.
- 14:32[SPEAKER_00]: So Ricky probably got blocked out a little bit from the ball and made a great catch.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what the 49ers have been missing.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_00]: Think about all the times you've seen the numbers try to come back from 14 down or 3 down.
- 14:44[SPEAKER_00]: And you just want them to hit one home run.
- 14:48[SPEAKER_00]: The touchdown would be nice, but maybe something just ended doubles out.
- 14:51[SPEAKER_00]: Triple's alley, leg it out.
- 14:53[SPEAKER_00]: And 45, there was nothing tricky about it.
- 14:56[SPEAKER_00]: It was one-on-one down the sideline.
- 14:58[SPEAKER_00]: Perti just had to make a great throw and Ricky had to make the play.
- 15:02[SPEAKER_00]: And Perti made a great throw when they needed it most.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_00]: I know that everyone's got the stats, like third most 20 yard plays in the last two years and all that stuff.
- 15:10[SPEAKER_00]: And it's real, I get it.
- 15:13[SPEAKER_00]: But in these moments, it's not about getting like,
- 15:17[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I would look, you know, the 25-yard over-out's great, but sometimes you just need somebody to make a play down the sideline one-on-one and catch a 45-yard bomb.
- 15:25[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what he did, and that was awesome.
- 15:28[SPEAKER_00]: So...
- 15:29[SPEAKER_00]: It was one of those games where you go this if whoever loses his game is going to feel awful about it because neither team played great, but somebody's going to get to win it and and then they're going to feel great about that.
- 15:43[SPEAKER_00]: So we'll see I think I think it might be an indication of a stressful week to week season incoming, but you don't see them again till week 18.
- 15:56[SPEAKER_00]: You know, they'll be, you think they'll be a better team by then, but I do think there is this element of like winning those games, gives young players especially, but just gives a whole team, gives a coaching staff, gives vets, gives everybody some confidence, makes him feel good, like we're catching some breaks, and I think after last year, it would have felt, it would have felt pretty bad.
- 16:18[SPEAKER_00]: to lose that game.
- 16:19[SPEAKER_00]: Not just because of that game, but because it felt like you lost a lot of games like that last season.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_00]: So, big one.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_00]: Alright, like to talk about this week, we're almost home, and I'll talk to you soon later.
