- 0:15Speaker 1: first heard on CBS, June 22nd, 1958. As family authority,
- 0:21Speaker 1: local prejudice, and the couple's future collide, Marshal Matt Dillon
- 0:25Speaker 1: is drawn into a tense situation. Les Crutchfield wrote the script.

- 0:53Speaker 2: Around Dodge City and in the Territory on West, there's
- 0:56Speaker 2: just one way to handle the killers and the spoilers,
- 0:58Speaker 2: and that's with a U.S. Marshal and the smell of
- 1:01Speaker 2: gun smoke. Gunsmoke, starring William Conrad. The story of the
- 1:24Speaker 2: violence that moved west with young America. And the story
- 1:28Speaker 2: of a man who moved with it.
- 1:30Speaker 3: I'm that man. Matt Dillon, United States Marshal. The first
- 1:34Speaker 3: man they look for and the last they want to meet.
- 1:38Speaker 4: It's a chancy job. And it makes a man watchful.
- 1:42Speaker 4: And a little lonely.
- 1:44Speaker 5: Gunsmoke Well, you're up early, Marshal.
- 2:05Speaker 6: Yes, sir.
- 2:06Speaker 4: How are you, Skyler? As young Danny leads around.
- 2:08Speaker 7: Hey, room 14, straight down the hall.
- 2:11Speaker 5: Oh, thanks. You checked in last night.
- 2:15Speaker 8: Mr.
- 2:15Speaker 9: Dillon, you suppose Danny and his pa's had another scrap
- 2:17Speaker 9: of some kind?
- 2:18Speaker 4: Might have.
- 2:19Speaker 3: Old Cater's pretty hard to get along with. I'm surprised
- 2:22Speaker 3: the boy stood.
- 2:22Speaker 4: It as long as he has.
- 2:24Speaker 9: It sure was a funny sounding note he sent over
- 2:27Speaker 9: to the office.
- 2:28Speaker 6: What do you make of it?
- 2:29Speaker 4: Chester, if I could make anything of it, we wouldn't
- 2:31Speaker 4: have to come here and ask it, would we?
- 2:39Speaker 6: I didn't think you'd re.
- 2:42Speaker 6: Marshal Dillon.
- 2:43Speaker 4: Morning, Danny. Mind if we come in?
- 2:45Speaker 6: Well, I was just about to go out.
- 2:47Speaker 3: That won't take a minute. I just wanted to find
- 2:53Speaker 3: out what you meant by this note, Danny.
- 2:57Speaker 6: You better go on out to the farm and ask
- 2:59Speaker 6: my pa.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Oh, I'm going to, but I just thought maybe you
- 3:01Speaker 3: could give me some idea first.
- 3:03Speaker 6: You better talk to him, Marshal.
- 3:05Speaker 4: How is he anyway? Last time I saw him, he
- 3:07Speaker 4: was having some trouble.
- 3:08Speaker 6: He never changes, you know that. Except he gets meaner.
- 3:14Speaker 4: You two have trouble, did you?
- 3:16Speaker 6: We had trouble, yeah.
- 3:18Speaker 4: That's why you stayed here in town last night, huh?
- 3:20Speaker 6: I walked out, Marshal, and I ain't going back. I
- 3:24Speaker 6: took all off him, I'm going to. Now, look, I
- 3:26Speaker 6: got some things to do.
- 3:27Speaker 4: Now, so I'm... Did the trouble have anything to do
- 3:29Speaker 4: with this note?
- 3:30Speaker 6: Not exactly. He wanted you to come out to the farm.
- 3:34Speaker 6: I told him I'd pass the word to you. Look, Marshal,
- 3:37Speaker 6: he can tell you all this. I haven't got time now.
- 3:39Speaker 6: You got time to answer a couple of questions, Danny. Now,
- 3:42Speaker 6: what does he want to see me about? It's trespassers again.
- 3:46Speaker 6: They're camping down by the pond to be close to water.
- 3:50Speaker 10: Oh?
- 3:51Speaker 6: They ain't hurting nothing. We don't even use that lower section.
- 3:55Speaker 6: But that don't make no difference to him.
- 3:57Speaker 4: Your pa's always been like that.
- 3:59Speaker 6: Trouble is, he thinks the whole world's his, and everybody
- 4:03Speaker 6: in it, including me. But I ain't a kid no
- 4:06Speaker 6: more that he can cuss at and take a whiff.
- 4:11Speaker 4: Are you expecting somebody?
- 4:14Speaker 6: Well, not exactly.
- 4:15Speaker 4: I'd better find out who it is, hadn't I? But,
- 4:18Speaker 4: you know, wait, Marshal. Ah, good morning, young lady.
- 4:23Speaker 6: Naomi.
- 4:24Speaker 10: I am come to see you, Danny, like I say
- 4:27Speaker 10: I am.
- 4:29Speaker 6: This is Marshal Dillon and Chester Proudfoot. This is Naomi.
- 4:34Speaker 4: How do you do?
- 4:35Speaker 9: Thank you.
- 4:36Speaker 10: Hey, friends of Danny is friends of me.
- 4:38Speaker 6: Look, Naomi, they're just going. You wait here.
- 4:41Speaker 4: I'll walk out with them.
- 4:43Speaker 6: You coming, Marshal?
- 4:45Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, Danny. Pleasure meeting you, ma'am.
- 4:48Speaker 6: Yes, sir. Goodbye. Look, Marshal, it ain't like you're thinking.
- 4:56Speaker 3: I wasn't thinking anything, Danny. Uh, Naomi there, she's a gypsy,
- 5:02Speaker 3: isn't she?
- 5:03Speaker 6: Well, what of it?
- 5:04Speaker 3: And those trespassers camping out at your pa's farm?
- 5:07Speaker 6: All right, they're gypsies and she's one of them. What
- 5:10Speaker 6: about it?
- 5:12Speaker 4: You're asking for trouble, Danny.
- 5:14Speaker 6: You sound just like my pa.
- 5:16Speaker 4: Gypsies take care of their own. They make their own laws.
- 5:20Speaker 4: And they're pretty strict laws.
- 5:22Speaker 6: Why don't you let me worry about it, huh?
- 5:24Speaker 4: Well, that's what you'll do, Danny, if you're smart. You'll
- 5:28Speaker 4: worry about it a lot.
- 5:29Speaker 1: The End.
- 5:45Speaker 4: Old Cater's got a nice place here, Mr.
- 5:48Speaker 7: Jones.
- 5:50Speaker 4: Well, he ought to.
- 5:53Speaker 3: He's put 20 hours a day on it for the
- 5:55Speaker 3: last 10 years.
- 5:56Speaker 5: Hey, Cater!
- 6:00Speaker 6: Oh!
- 6:01Speaker 7: Sergeant Marshall, Chester.
- 6:04Speaker 8: Just a minute till I jump out the rest of
- 6:06Speaker 8: this beam.
- 6:08Speaker 6: There.
- 6:11Speaker 7: Eat your heads off now, you mangy varmints. Put some
- 6:14Speaker 7: weight on.
- 6:17Speaker 8: Any fool that tries to raise hogs on the prairie
- 6:20Speaker 8: just ain't got.
- 6:20Speaker 7: Good sense, Marshal.
- 6:21Speaker 4: They look all right to me.
- 6:22Speaker 8: Yeah, they won't make a sense. Cost more to feed
- 6:25Speaker 8: them than they're worth. Kind of took your time coming out,
- 6:29Speaker 8: didn't you?
- 6:29Speaker 3: Well, if you call three hours taking our time, that's
- 6:32Speaker 3: when I got your note.
- 6:34Speaker 7: Yeah, that worthless young pup.
- 6:36Speaker 8: I told him to tell you last night as soon
- 6:37Speaker 8: as he got in town. Come over here and sit
- 6:40Speaker 8: in the shade.
- 6:41Speaker 1: All right.
- 6:52Speaker 4: Cater, did you and Danny have an argument?
- 6:58Speaker 7: I talked and he listened. He ain't got the gumption
- 7:01Speaker 7: to argue.
- 7:02Speaker 4: He tells me he's not coming back home.
- 7:05Speaker 7: He'll come back.
- 7:06Speaker 8: He'd starve to death if he had to feed himself.
- 7:09Speaker 8: Somebody will yell boo at him in the dark and
- 7:11Speaker 8: he'll come high tailing back fast.
- 7:13Speaker 3: I'm afraid I don't agree with you, Cater. Danny always
- 7:15Speaker 3: looked to me like a pretty decent kid.
- 7:17Speaker 8: You ain't worth the powder to blow him up. And
- 7:20Speaker 8: the last straw was when he was too lily-livered to
- 7:22Speaker 8: run them trespassers off.
- 7:24Speaker 4: Why don't you leave those people alone, Cater? They're figuring
- 7:27Speaker 4: to move on by the end of the week anyway.
- 7:29Speaker 8: Sure, and take half the farm with them like there's not.
- 7:32Speaker 8: I'm missing five pullets now. Stole just since they've been there.
- 7:36Speaker 4: That might have been a coyote or a weasel, maybe.
- 7:38Speaker 8: Yeah, and it might have been that pack of thieving gypsies, too. Marshal,
- 7:42Speaker 8: I didn't build this farm by putting up the squatters,
- 7:45Speaker 8: and I ain't about to start now. I fought for
- 7:47Speaker 8: this land every square foot of it.
- 7:49Speaker 7: And I'll keep right on fighting.
- 7:50Speaker 3: Times are different from when they were when you first
- 7:53Speaker 3: came to the prairie, Cater.
- 7:54Speaker 7: Yeah, people ain't.
- 7:55Speaker 8: They're all out to take what you got away from you.
- 7:57Speaker 8: You always got to keep out guessing them and out
- 8:00Speaker 8: fighting them. That's what I tried to learn that boy
- 8:02Speaker 8: of mine. But he ain't got the backbone of an
- 8:04Speaker 8: angle worm. Why, he didn't even take a gun when
- 8:07Speaker 8: I sent him over to run them thieving gypsies out.
- 8:09Speaker 3: You know, Cater, there are other answers in this world
- 8:12Speaker 3: besides guns.
- 8:13Speaker 8: Yeah, but it's with guns that won this country. And
- 8:16Speaker 8: they'll keep on winning it, too. You pack one yourself,
- 8:19Speaker 8: don't you, Marshal?
- 8:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I use it to enforce the law, but not
- 8:24Speaker 3: to settle every personal argument that comes along.
- 8:27Speaker 8: Well, then start enforcing the law. You go over there
- 8:30Speaker 8: and talk to them gypsies and tell them to get out.
- 8:32Speaker 4: I have talked to them. Chester and I just came
- 8:34Speaker 4: from there.
- 8:35Speaker 8: Did you run them out?
- 8:36Speaker 3: They're repairing their wagons, building wheels and setting hubs.
- 8:39Speaker 4: They'll try to pull out sometime tomorrow.
- 8:41Speaker 8: So they out-blocked you too, did they? What'd they do?
- 8:44Speaker 8: Dangle one of their women in front of you? That's
- 8:47Speaker 8: what they done with Danny. Yeah, I seen what was
- 8:49Speaker 8: going on. He was sweet-eyeing one of them all week.
- 8:53Speaker 8: And she was letting him, too.
- 8:54Speaker 4: Now, listen a minute, Peter.
- 8:55Speaker 8: Now, you look to your duty, Marshal. Stop taking up
- 8:57Speaker 8: for them foreigners.
- 8:57Speaker 4: Will you listen to me, I said? Now, those people
- 9:01Speaker 4: are touchy enough at best. If you go insulting them,
- 9:03Speaker 4: you're going to have some real trouble on your hands.
- 9:05Speaker 8: Gypsies are bad luck, and I want them out of there.
- 9:07Speaker 4: They'll be out by tomorrow evening.
- 9:11Speaker 3: And in the meantime, you leave that rifle of yours
- 9:14Speaker 3: in the house. And stay away from that pond.
- 9:18Speaker 4: You understand?
- 9:19Speaker 10: Matt, if words were dollars, you'd be the biggest miser in.
- 9:39Speaker 6: The Long Branch. Huh?
- 9:41Speaker 4: What do you mean, Kitty?
- 9:43Speaker 10: Well, you sure haven't been talking.
- 9:46Speaker 4: Oh, I'm sorry.
- 9:48Speaker 10: And what's worse, you haven't been listening to me.
- 9:50Speaker 3: I thought there was more to it. Okay, what were
- 9:54Speaker 3: you saying?
- 9:55Speaker 4: Oh, I don't remember.
- 9:57Speaker 10: But it's a principle. A girl can't stand being ignored.
- 10:02Speaker 4: Ignored? Well, in that dress you're wearing, you'd be pretty
- 10:06Speaker 4: hard to ignore.
- 10:08Speaker 6: Oh, it's not that, Skimpy.
- 10:10Speaker 4: It's the latest thing, Matthew. Oh, it's fine, Kitty. It's fine. Oh,
- 10:15Speaker 4: I don't know, Kitty. I guess I'm just kind of
- 10:18Speaker 4: down this evening.
- 10:20Speaker 6: Oh, trouble?
- 10:22Speaker 5: Not yet.
- 10:22Speaker 4: I just got a feeling there's going to be.
- 10:26Speaker 9: What do you mean?
- 10:26Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 10:27Speaker 3: It's just a hunch.
- 10:30Speaker 10: Well, why don't you go get your fortune told? There's
- 10:33Speaker 10: a band of gypsies in town.
- 10:35Speaker 6: Oh?
- 10:36Speaker 4: How did you know?
- 10:37Speaker 10: Some of them were in here. Not drinking or anything.
- 10:40Speaker 6: Just looking around.
- 10:41Speaker 4: Oh, is that so?
- 10:43Speaker 10: Did you know young Danny Leitz has got himself a
- 10:45Speaker 10: gypsy girl? She's pretty as a picture. I saw him
- 10:48Speaker 10: in the restaurant.
- 10:49Speaker 4: Tell me, Kitty. Is she still in town?
- 10:52Speaker 6: Well, she was a couple of hours ago.
- 10:55Speaker 10: Why, Matt? Something wrong?
- 10:57Speaker 4: Oh, no, I guess not.
- 11:01Speaker 3: I suppose he ought to have a chance to find
- 11:03Speaker 3: at least one thing for himself in this world.
- 11:07Speaker 4: Oh, Keener's never let him call a breath his own.
- 11:10Speaker 10: I like Danny.
- 11:11Speaker 4: He's a good boy.
- 11:13Speaker 6: But that Cater.
- 11:14Speaker 4: Well, sod busting's a rough life, Kitty.
- 11:16Speaker 3: Makes a man either mean or wise or else it
- 11:20Speaker 3: kills him.
- 11:22Speaker 4: So far, it's just made Cater mean.
- 11:24Speaker 10: Oh, he was born that way, Matt. All he's got
- 11:26Speaker 10: in the world is his son. You'd think you'd treat
- 11:29Speaker 10: him decent.
- 11:30Speaker 6: Mr.
- 11:30Speaker 8: Dillon, you better come on over to the depot.
- 11:33Speaker 4: What is it, Chester?
- 11:34Speaker 6: Danny Leach's been hurt real bad.
- 11:36Speaker 5: He's unconscious. Huh?
- 11:38Speaker 4: All right, I'll meet you there.
- 11:39Speaker 7: You go get Doc.
- 11:56Speaker 4: How is he, Doc?
- 11:57Speaker 5: Oh, he'll be all right, Matt.
- 12:01Speaker 6: Just been beat up a little. He had a bad
- 12:04Speaker 6: whack on the head there. Well, he's coming around. Wake up, lad.
- 12:09Speaker 8: Come on now, boy.
- 12:10Speaker 6: You can't sleep forever. Anybody know how it happened? No,
- 12:15Speaker 6: the station agent come out and seen him laying there.
- 12:19Speaker 8: That's it. Come on, Danny, man. Back to the world
- 12:22Speaker 8: of the living.
- 12:23Speaker 6: What is it? Huh? What happened?
- 12:26Speaker 4: That's what I was about to ask you, Danny. What
- 12:28Speaker 4: did happen? Oh, I don't know.
- 12:31Speaker 6: I just waited here till train time. Where is she?
- 12:36Speaker 10: Huh? Where's Naomi?
- 12:37Speaker 5: Easy now, boy.
- 12:39Speaker 6: They took her.
- 12:40Speaker 4: Who took her, Danny?
- 12:40Speaker 6: The gypsies. She said they would. She said they would
- 12:44Speaker 6: if we didn't get away in time.
- 12:45Speaker 8: What's he mean, gypsy?
- 12:46Speaker 4: Later, Doc. Later. Go on, Danny.
- 12:49Speaker 6: I was aiming to leave. Going to Kansas City. I
- 12:53Speaker 6: got tickets on the train.
- 12:54Speaker 8: You're not in any shape to travel, son.
- 12:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:57Speaker 6: We got here early. Stayed right down here at the
- 13:00Speaker 6: end of the platform, out of sight. Naomi was scared.
- 13:04Speaker 6: She said it was going to end bad. She was right.
- 13:07Speaker 6: He was aiming to get married in Kansas City, Marshal.
- 13:11Speaker 4: I'm sorry, Nanny.
- 13:12Speaker 6: They come out of the shadows there. Eight or ten
- 13:14Speaker 6: of them. Next thing I know, they grab Naomi. They
- 13:17Speaker 6: come at me with knives. Then one of them hit
- 13:19Speaker 6: me from behind. That's all I know. Let me go, Doc.
- 13:24Speaker 6: You're in no condition to be standing up, Danny. I
- 13:27Speaker 6: never have stood up, Doc. Let go. I didn't stand
- 13:32Speaker 6: up when they come and took her. I didn't lift
- 13:35Speaker 6: a hand.
- 13:35Speaker 4: You couldn't have done anything, Danny.
- 13:37Speaker 6: Maybe Paul's right. If you want anything, if you want
- 13:41Speaker 6: to keep it, you got to hit out at anybody
- 13:43Speaker 6: that gets close. Hit him first. That's the way Paul thinks.
- 13:46Speaker 4: And he's hated for it, Danny. He hasn't got a friend.
- 13:49Speaker 8: In the world.
- 13:50Speaker 6: Well, what have I got? The only thing I ever wanted.
- 13:53Speaker 6: The only person that ever thought I amounted to something.
- 13:57Speaker 6: And I let them come and take her back without
- 13:59Speaker 6: even fighting for her. Why don't you go over to
- 14:01Speaker 6: your room and rest a.
- 14:02Speaker 10: While, Danny?
- 14:02Speaker 6: Go to bed without my supper, is that what you mean?
- 14:05Speaker 5: Now, Danny, I.
- 14:06Speaker 6: Well, what are you all gaping at? Ain't you ever
- 14:08Speaker 6: never seen a coward before?
- 14:10Speaker 4: Take it easy now, Danny.
- 14:11Speaker 8: I gotta get out of here, Marshal.
- 14:13Speaker 6: I gotta get out of here.
- 14:14Speaker 8: Before I bust wide open.
- 14:17Speaker 9: Well, the cushion train's pulling out right on time at once.
- 14:24Speaker 4: Yeah. It's too bad this happened. Danny and that girl
- 14:29Speaker 4: might have got on fine.
- 14:30Speaker 6: What girl are you talking about, Matt? I'd like to
- 14:34Speaker 6: know what's going on here once in a while, too.
- 14:36Speaker 8: Hey, what's all that?
- 14:38Speaker 5: Come back here.
- 14:40Speaker 6: Marshal.
- 14:42Speaker 7: Marshal.
- 14:43Speaker 4: Marshal, you see that? Say what, mister?
- 14:45Speaker 8: That young fella, the.
- 14:47Speaker 5: One that was hurt, he grabbed my gun.
- 14:49Speaker 4: Out of my holster and lit out in that horse
- 14:50Speaker 4: like the old Nick was after him. Let's get our horses, Chester. Now,
- 15:10Speaker 4: here we are, Chester.
- 15:12Speaker 8: Well, but them gypsies pulled out, Mr.
- 15:14Speaker 6: Jones.
- 15:14Speaker 9: They broke camp and pulled out.
- 15:16Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 15:18Speaker 3: Well, I guess that business at the depot got them spooked.
- 15:21Speaker 3: But I'd have bet anything that this is where Danny
- 15:23Speaker 3: was heading.
- 15:24Speaker 9: Maybe we passed him somewhere between here and Dodge.
- 15:29Speaker 4: Somebody's over there, Mr.
- 15:29Speaker 7: Jones.
- 15:30Speaker 9: In the shadows under them trees there.
- 15:32Speaker 4: Yeah. Hey, Danny, is that you?
- 15:38Speaker 6: Yeah, it's me, Marshal.
- 15:40Speaker 4: Come on, Chester. I'm going.
- 15:49Speaker 9: To clear this blackening inside of the cow around here.
- 15:54Speaker 4: A fella could fall.
- 15:55Speaker 6: Right smack into that pond. Yeah. You come out to
- 16:01Speaker 6: wet nurse me back to town, Marshal?
- 16:04Speaker 4: You're saying that, Danny. I'm not.
- 16:06Speaker 6: I guess you can see for yourself. They pulled out.
- 16:09Speaker 4: Gone. Yeah, they sure have.
- 16:11Speaker 6: I'm going after them, Marshal. I'll find them if it
- 16:14Speaker 6: takes me ten years.
- 16:15Speaker 4: Now, don't be a fool, Danny.
- 16:16Speaker 6: Oh, that's what I've been all right, but I ain't now.
- 16:19Speaker 6: She didn't want to go, Marshal. They took her against
- 16:22Speaker 6: her will, and I'm going after her.
- 16:23Speaker 4: Danny, they'd kill her before they'd let her marry an outsider.
- 16:26Speaker 4: That's the way gypsies are.
- 16:27Speaker 6: Maybe I can change their minds. Paul's way, talking over
- 16:31Speaker 6: the sights of a gun.
- 16:32Speaker 4: Yeah, but his way's not yours, Danny, and you're better
- 16:34Speaker 4: off it's not.
- 16:35Speaker 6: It's got him everything he wanted.
- 16:36Speaker 4: Has it?
- 16:37Speaker 6: There ain't no use arguing about it, Marshal. And you
- 16:39Speaker 6: got no right to stop me.
- 16:41Speaker 4: I wasn't figuring to stop you, Danny. Not that way.
- 16:45Speaker 6: Well, then I'll be riding out, Marshal. I'll try to
- 16:48Speaker 6: cover the trail. The longer they go, the harder it's
- 16:51Speaker 6: going to be to find.
