- 0:00Speaker 1: You're listening to KFI AM 640, the Bill Handel Show
- 0:04Speaker 1: on demand on the iHeartRadio app.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Good morning, everybody.
- 0:08Speaker 3: It is a Monday morning, October 19th, as we approach midterms.
- 0:12Speaker 3: We'll do a little bit of politics later on. But
- 0:16Speaker 3: it looks like the Republicans are imploding on this one.
- 0:19Speaker 3: And President Trump is doing the best he can to
- 0:24Speaker 3: make it more difficult for Republicans to get votes. It's
- 0:29Speaker 3: almost as if he is following the Democratic playbook, how
- 0:33Speaker 3: to lose votes in the Republican Party, which I think
- 0:37Speaker 3: is absolutely fascinating.
- 0:39Speaker 2: So let us introduce the whole crowd here. First, Neil,
- 0:44Speaker 2: good morning. Good morning.
- 0:46Speaker 4: Mute.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Ah, yes, I have to mute. Thank you very much.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Good muting. Good muting. I don't even know where my–
- 0:53Speaker 2: Happy Mute Monday.
- 0:55Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 0:55Speaker 3: Tony, you've got to tell me when to mute because
- 0:57Speaker 3: usually I'm used to having someone tell me to.
- 0:59Speaker 4: Oh, and wipe his butt when you get a chance.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true too.
- 1:05Speaker 3: I'm only used to having the board person, the board engineer,
- 1:10Speaker 3: the technical director extraordinaire tell me when to mute because
- 1:14Speaker 3: I'm thinking of other things at the time. And Tony
- 1:17Speaker 3: is here. This isn't your last Monday, is it? No. No,
- 1:22Speaker 3: until we find someone that can do the Saturday show.
- 1:25Speaker 5: He is miserable.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I know.
- 1:27Speaker 3: It's not an easy show to do. We wake up
- 1:29Speaker 3: at the crack of dawn.
- 1:30Speaker 2: He only has to do it one day a week.
- 1:32Speaker 2: We have to do it five.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Yeah, and Mario is going to join us five days
- 1:35Speaker 3: a week. Mario comes tomorrow from Tuesday through Saturday. And
- 1:39Speaker 3: that's because Saturday, someone has to mute, by the way,
- 1:42Speaker 3: because we're doing this again.
- 1:44Speaker 2: That one's not my fault. Saturday, we.
- 1:49Speaker 3: Need a board operator because we need a board operator.
- 1:53Speaker 3: And so we're trying to figure everything out here as
- 1:56Speaker 3: we go. So Tony is here next Monday. And until
- 2:01Speaker 3: we find someone the following Monday, it is not an
- 2:04Speaker 3: easy gig to do this.
- 2:06Speaker 2: It is not.
- 2:07Speaker 3: You wake up at the crack of the middle of
- 2:09Speaker 3: the night. The pay is, well, the pay is... I
- 2:13Speaker 3: heart media pay. And it's just not easy. All the
- 2:17Speaker 3: other shows have tons of interns. We can't get an
- 2:19Speaker 3: intern on this show.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Yeah, it sucks. Yeah, we just can't.
- 2:24Speaker 3: And theoretically, this is the strongest show we have on
- 2:28Speaker 3: the air in terms of ratings and in terms of
- 2:31Speaker 3: where we rank in the market.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Very strange. Okay, so with that being.
- 2:36Speaker 4: Said— And it's all on Anne's shoulders.
- 2:39Speaker 3: It is.
- 2:40Speaker 4: And then trickles down to the rest of us.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Yeah, that's so true.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Anne runs this thing, and sometimes it works. Most times
- 2:46Speaker 3: it doesn't. Okay, so that's Tony.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Good morning, Anne. I'll keep that in mind tonight when
- 2:51Speaker 2: we're putting the show together.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Yes, please do.
- 2:53Speaker 2: And Neil is there. Amy, good morning. Not your fault.
- 2:55Speaker 5: Hi, everybody. Is it a Let's Complain Monday?
- 2:58Speaker 3: Yeah, it is Let's Complain Monday. Shut up, Amy. I'm
- 3:02Speaker 3: going to now tell you about a complaint.
- 3:05Speaker 2: That I had. It's been an interesting weekend.
- 3:07Speaker 5: Yes, it has for you.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Yes, we start with the fact that we had to
- 3:10Speaker 3: evacuate here in Orange County. The fires came within about
- 3:14Speaker 3: a quarter mile and they were on our way to
- 3:17Speaker 3: our house. We figured we had about 15 minutes. We
- 3:20Speaker 3: were under mandatory evacuation. The police came around to make
- 3:24Speaker 3: sure everybody was out and we were already gone. And
- 3:29Speaker 3: then the winds shifted, and they went the other way.
- 3:32Speaker 3: We could certainly see the flames. They were just right
- 3:35Speaker 3: over the hill. So we lucked out, and so far,
- 3:38Speaker 3: so good. I took a spill, and there is a photo,
- 3:44Speaker 3: or is it a video, up on, I believe is
- 3:47Speaker 3: it the at Bill Handel page, Instagram page, and I
- 3:50Speaker 3: don't know where Lindsay put it.
- 3:53Speaker 2: So there is also.
- 3:56Speaker 2: You look like a hostage. Yeah. Yeah.
- 4:01Speaker 3: And now we add insult to injury. I have a stye.
- 4:05Speaker 3: As you can see, my right eye is basically covered up.
- 4:11Speaker 3: The eyelid is almost covering the entire eye because of
- 4:15Speaker 3: this massive stye I have, which is, it'll go away.
- 4:18Speaker 2: I have to put hot compresses on there. Keep your
- 4:20Speaker 2: feet on the ground and your eye in the stye.
- 4:22Speaker 5: Do you have any tea? You're supposed to put like
- 4:24Speaker 5: a tea bag.
- 4:25Speaker 2: A tea bag. You want me to teabag your eye? Oh,
- 4:29Speaker 2: that's very funny. Thank you so much for that. Okay. No,
- 4:32Speaker 2: I'm serious.
- 4:32Speaker 5: It helps.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Okay.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Well, I'm going to do anything I can because I
- 4:35Speaker 2: can't read. I'll drive over.
- 4:37Speaker 3: I cannot see the stories, which I'm going to need
- 4:40Speaker 3: your help. I can barely see the headlines.
- 4:43Speaker 2: So today. God, you're a mess. I know.
- 4:46Speaker 3: So today I'm not going to be quoting studies or
- 4:49Speaker 3: statistics or Or names of people.
- 4:52Speaker 2: So studies of which I have no idea what the
- 4:55Speaker 2: numbers are.
- 4:55Speaker 3: I have no idea what the studies are about. I
- 4:58Speaker 3: have no idea who ran the studies because I can't
- 5:00Speaker 3: read it. So it's going to be there's some study
- 5:03Speaker 3: run by somebody in certain numbers of some kind that
- 5:06Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 5:07Speaker 2: And this is what. How is that different when you
- 5:09Speaker 2: have two eyes? That's a good point. But particularly today
- 5:13Speaker 2: is going to be a tough one.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Okay.
- 5:16Speaker 4: Okay. You're talking out of your butt anyways. What does
- 5:19Speaker 4: that have to do with your eyes?
- 5:21Speaker 2: Well, that's another issue, the hemorrhoids.
- 5:23Speaker 5: Oh, no.
- 5:24Speaker 4: Oh, my gosh.
- 5:28Speaker 3: I didn't bring it up. I didn't bring it up, Amy. Amy,
- 5:31Speaker 3: that was Neil.
- 5:33Speaker 2: You and your.
- 5:34Speaker 4: New bride have zero normal days. You guys are in
- 5:38Speaker 4: the constant state of chaos.
- 5:40Speaker 2: We are.
- 5:41Speaker 3: We are.
- 5:42Speaker 2: That's true. I think they like it. I do. I married.
- 5:45Speaker 2: I married, and she married chaos.
- 5:48Speaker 4: She's calling me, telling me that I've got to handle
- 5:51Speaker 4: the show in the morning, and I'm like, that's Saturday.
- 5:56Speaker 4: I don't do the law show, although it would be
- 6:00Speaker 4: better information if I did.
- 6:03Speaker 3: But, yeah, it's total chaos. I watched a little football yesterday. Boy,
- 6:07Speaker 3: how about them Chargers, huh?
- 6:09Speaker 2: They're really moving.
- 6:11Speaker 5: Oh, as if– As if Ann wasn't depressed enough.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Yeah. 0-5.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Yes.
- 6:17Speaker 2: So bad.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Not very good.
- 6:19Speaker 3: Kansas City, good game. So we're going to do a
- 6:23Speaker 3: little football talk. I watch football.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Thank you. It's over. Football talk is done.
- 6:27Speaker 3: Now, let me see if I can read this damn thing.
- 6:31Speaker 2: It's going to be an interesting show, to say the least.
- 6:34Speaker 2: You have one eye.
- 6:37Speaker 3: No, I can't, because the one eye, I've had LASIK
- 6:40Speaker 3: in my monovision for I have distance in the eye
- 6:44Speaker 3: that's good. And my close-up eye is my right eye,
- 6:48Speaker 3: which is covered up by this ridiculous sty.
- 6:51Speaker 4: Where's your reading glasses?
- 6:52Speaker 2: I don't have reading glasses.
- 6:54Speaker 3: I don't need reading glasses because I have monovision, which
- 6:57Speaker 3: means that one eye is for far distance and the
- 7:02Speaker 3: other eye is for near distance. That's what happens. And
- 7:04Speaker 3: usually when both eyes are working, it works.
- 7:07Speaker 4: One of your eyes has been making out?
- 7:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:10Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 7:11Speaker 2: All right, so.
- 7:14Speaker 5: Is it sleepy?
- 7:16Speaker 2: It looks sleepy, doesn't it? All right, guys. You're a mess, dude.
- 7:20Speaker 4: And they're putting coyotes down. We got to put you down.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Yeah, oh, that's the other thing. We're going to talk
- 7:25Speaker 2: about that, too. All right, guys, let's do it.
- 7:27Speaker 3: It's time for Handle on the News on this Monday morning,
- 7:31Speaker 3: October 19th, with Amy, Neil, and me.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Lead story.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Lead story.
- 7:40Speaker 3: Something happened over the weekend with a couple of countries,
- 7:43Speaker 3: and I really don't know what it is because I
- 7:46Speaker 3: can't read the headlines.
- 7:48Speaker 2: So why don't we take it from there? What do
- 7:52Speaker 2: you think?
- 7:53Speaker 4: Yeah, Ukraine launches more than 1,000 drones at Russia.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 7:58Speaker 4: They're angry because, you know, Trump is making deals with
- 8:02Speaker 4: Russia when he says no one make deals with Russia.
- 8:05Speaker 4: And Zelensky's in the middle of it because he's going, hey, well,
- 8:08Speaker 4: you need gas. I need to save my entire country.
- 8:12Speaker 4: So there's that.
- 8:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I made a little bit of a joke because
- 8:15Speaker 3: I actually can read a headline. But it's the Republicans
- 8:21Speaker 3: are so pissed off as an addition of the Democrats
- 8:24Speaker 3: and what Trump is doing. And Trump said it real easy.
- 8:27Speaker 2: We're done. This helps. This is for the security of
- 8:29Speaker 2: the United States.
- 8:31Speaker 3: This is for national security, and no matter what he does,
- 8:34Speaker 3: it's for national security.
- 8:36Speaker 2: And he is blaming Zelensky.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Zelensky is the one that is stopping the peace. Zelensky
- 8:43Speaker 3: is the one that is firing missiles into the infrastructure,
- 8:47Speaker 3: the diesel fuel infrastructure of Russia. Russia is doing nothing wrong.
- 8:53Speaker 3: Zelensky is causing the diesel shortage. Zelensky won't come to
- 8:58Speaker 3: the table. Zelensky is not cooperating. That's the problem.
- 9:03Speaker 4: Damn it, Zelensky.
- 9:05Speaker 3: Yeah. In the meantime, what a lifeline to Putin. But still,
- 9:10Speaker 3: Trump's followers, it doesn't matter what he does. There was
- 9:13Speaker 3: one interview with a woman, a MAGA supporter, and it's
- 9:16Speaker 3: not atypical. The president has a plan. We don't know
- 9:19Speaker 3: what it is, but we know he has a plan,
- 9:22Speaker 3: and we know America will be great for the plan.
- 9:24Speaker 4: You remember when people used to say that about God?
- 9:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:28Speaker 3: God has a plan as he takes out an entire city.
- 9:34Speaker 2: There's a plan.
- 9:35Speaker 3: There's a great God story later on today, too.
- 9:39Speaker 2: I really like that.
- 9:41Speaker 3: Which we'll talk about a little bit later on.
- 9:44Speaker 5: This wily guy had to be euthanized. A coyote attacked
- 9:49Speaker 5: a 16-month-old toddler in their backyard on Saturday. It happened
- 9:54Speaker 5: in Glendora. Nope, it's not Glendora. It happened in Atwater Village.
- 9:59Speaker 3: Sorry.
- 10:00Speaker 5: Thinking about a different story. And after the attack, the
- 10:04Speaker 5: coyote followed the boy and the mom into the house.
- 10:09Speaker 5: He eventually left. The coyote or a coyote was later
- 10:13Speaker 5: captured by wildlife officials and was euthanized. And they haven't
- 10:17Speaker 5: confirmed that that's the same coyote because There are other
- 10:20Speaker 5: coyotes in the neighborhood, but there have been several spotted.
- 10:23Speaker 5: And some neighbors say that there's someone that's been feeding
- 10:29Speaker 5: the coyotes, and that's keeping them coming around.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Coyotes are usually very skittish.
- 10:36Speaker 5: Not the ones in my neighborhood. They just stare at
- 10:38Speaker 5: you that you can yell at them. They don't back off.
- 10:42Speaker 3: Yeah, the ones that are in my neighborhood, except for
- 10:44Speaker 3: the one that ate my dog. And that was a
- 10:48Speaker 3: little bit more aggressive.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Neil, I can't hear you. Sorry.
- 10:53Speaker 4: At noon yesterday, our cameras get triggered in our driveway,
- 10:59Speaker 4: and I look to see what it is, and it's
- 11:01Speaker 4: a coyote totally brazenly walking around broad daylight. And we
- 11:06Speaker 4: don't have dogs here, but they have two chihuahuas next door.
- 11:10Speaker 4: So I texted them and just said, you know, heads
- 11:14Speaker 4: up on this. And there's small kids running around as well. But,
- 11:18Speaker 4: you know, God bless all creatures and all that. But
- 11:22Speaker 4: you get near my kid. I'm going to pull your
- 11:25Speaker 4: jaws apart with my bare hands.
- 11:27Speaker 3: OK, let's go ahead and take a break and we
- 11:30Speaker 3: will come back and I will try to do a
- 11:35Speaker 3: commercial that schedule. Tony, get ready for a recorded commercial, please, because, well,
- 11:42Speaker 3: you'll see in a minute.
- 11:44Speaker 2: Amy, you want to bail me out of this one?
- 11:47Speaker 5: Absolutely.
- 11:49Speaker 6: You're listening to Bill Handel on demand from KFI AM 640.
- 11:54Speaker 3: Handel here and the morning crew on a Monday morning,
- 11:57Speaker 3: October 19th, as we continue with the show. How many
- 12:02Speaker 3: days till the midterms? I'm trying to count down.
- 12:07Speaker 5: Two weeks and one day.
- 12:08Speaker 2: Two weeks and one day.
- 12:10Speaker 3: I haven't yet done my mail-in ballot, which I will
- 12:14Speaker 3: probably next few days.
- 12:16Speaker 2: So there's Will. who has joined us. Hello, Will. Well, hello, Bill. Hello.
- 12:21Speaker 3: It's pretty dark in the room where you're at.
- 12:24Speaker 2: There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of light there. Well, here.
- 12:27Speaker 3: There.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Oh, there you go. Eternal light.
- 12:30Speaker 3: Now only partially lit. That's usually all the lights are on.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Not that it matters, but.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Well, I'm working from home today because I have a
- 12:38Speaker 1: donut tire on my car.
- 12:41Speaker 2: I have a flat tire. Oh, pizza cutter.
- 12:44Speaker 3: I thought he was about to say, I have a donut.
- 12:46Speaker 3: And I go, what's unusual? Of course you have donuts.
- 12:50Speaker 1: All right.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Let's do it. More handle on the news. Amy, Neil,
- 12:54Speaker 2: and me.
- 12:55Speaker 4: Oh, so it's not just in corporate America. Also in politics,
- 12:59Speaker 4: when they don't know what to do, they have a meeting.
- 13:01Speaker 4: So the Wall Street Journal is reporting that there could
- 13:05Speaker 4: be talks that take place in China with Russia, you know, Putin, Trump.
- 13:12Speaker 4: getting together on some sort of Ukraine deal.
- 13:16Speaker 2: Without Ukraine. Yeah. Ukraine won't have much to do with it,
- 13:20Speaker 2: even though it's about them.
- 13:21Speaker 4: It is kind of a puppet kind of situation, but
- 13:25Speaker 4: no clear understanding yet what the meeting itself and the
- 13:28Speaker 4: potential agenda, but they say this will take place in
- 13:33Speaker 4: November there in China.
- 13:39Speaker 5: Was it the woman or was it The truck. That
- 13:42Speaker 5: is the big question now. There were soccer games happening
- 13:48Speaker 5: in Wichita, Kansas. Kids soccer. When a pickup truck sped
- 13:54Speaker 5: out onto the field and killed a six-year-old boy and
- 13:57Speaker 5: a man, it injured 10 other people. Police say the
- 14:03Speaker 5: truck had been parked in a space near the soccer
- 14:07Speaker 5: fields at Stryker Sports Complex. Around 325 in the afternoon.
- 14:14Speaker 5: And the driver of that truck is a 34-year-old woman.
- 14:17Speaker 5: She was taken into custody. She's been released pending the
- 14:21Speaker 5: results of a toxicology test and also a mechanical examination
- 14:26Speaker 5: of the truck.
- 14:27Speaker 4: Right.
- 14:27Speaker 3: So let's assume if it's toxicology and she was high,
- 14:30Speaker 3: she's done. If there was a mechanical issue with the truck,
- 14:35Speaker 3: she's walking away.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Now, will she be liable? Maybe not even liable.
- 14:40Speaker 3: Maybe it'll be the mechanic or the manufacturer of the truck.
- 14:45Speaker 3: And it looks like, based on the fact she was
- 14:47Speaker 3: released and she's cooperating, it could be just a horrific accident.
- 14:53Speaker 3: It looks like that's the case here, where it wasn't
- 14:57Speaker 3: done purposely. There was no intent. It just happened. Things happened,
- 15:02Speaker 3: and it was just horrific luck, bad luck.
- 15:06Speaker 2: So we'll see.
- 15:09Speaker 4: Probably a bad time to go to France. Huge riots
- 15:12Speaker 4: break out. They're still reeling from the largest unrest in years.
- 15:18Speaker 4: Anti-government demonstrations all over the place. You heard Amy talking
- 15:22Speaker 4: about the Louvre being closed. Riots, looting, stuff we're used
- 15:29Speaker 4: to here in L.A., but it's been a while there.
- 15:33Speaker 4: bunch of stuff going on. Yesterday, more than half a
- 15:37Speaker 4: million people joined 110 plus marches throughout France on Saturday
- 15:43Speaker 4: and throughout the weekend there. High school students started protesting
- 15:49Speaker 4: last month. They've got frustrations over the condition of their schools,
- 15:53Speaker 4: crumbling infrastructure, overcrowded classrooms.
- 15:57Speaker 2: Welcome to America. Cost of living, oil prices.
- 16:02Speaker 3: And so they're arguing corruption and the government not doing
- 16:07Speaker 3: enough to help out the situation. Students in France have
- 16:11Speaker 3: quite a history. Go back to 1968. There were riots
- 16:14Speaker 3: in France that basically took down the government, which you
- 16:18Speaker 3: don't see happening. What happens in parliamentary governments, you can
- 16:21Speaker 3: take down an entire government. Just another one is put
- 16:23Speaker 3: into place. But it's a god-awful mess in France. And
- 16:28Speaker 3: the looters have come in for the most part. the
- 16:31Speaker 3: rioters are not looting and you have people who are
- 16:35Speaker 3: taking advantage of it. A couple of major historical buildings
- 16:38Speaker 3: were lit up and destroyed. It is a shame. Okay,
- 16:43Speaker 3: why don't we take a break? We'll come back and
- 16:46Speaker 3: engage in more Handel on the News.
- 16:49Speaker 6: You're listening to Bill Handel On Demand from KFI AM 640.
- 16:53Speaker 3: Starting another week, October 19th. And we're a couple weeks
- 16:57Speaker 3: out before the election. Two weeks from tomorrow is the midterms.
- 17:03Speaker 3: We'll talk a little bit more about that. It's getting
- 17:04Speaker 3: really interesting. Not so much for the Republicans, not, but
- 17:09Speaker 3: getting real interesting. As a matter of fact, there's a
- 17:11Speaker 3: little bit of a political story we have here. So
- 17:13Speaker 3: let's return to Handel on the News. Amy, Neil, and me.
- 17:16Speaker 5: A hefty little price tag. Lawmakers in the Senate Armed
- 17:22Speaker 5: Services Committee have called on the Pentagon to reveal the
- 17:25Speaker 5: total cost of the war in Iran. The letter is
- 17:29Speaker 5: asking the Pentagon to reveal an estimated cost for the damage,
- 17:34Speaker 5: a timeline for beginning repairs, and how much it has
- 17:37Speaker 5: spent adapting new facilities to account for the damage done
- 17:40Speaker 5: to military bases in the region.
- 17:43Speaker 1: The U.S.
- 17:43Speaker 5: Military had estimated the war has cost $ 43. 6 billion as
- 17:46Speaker 5: of September 3rd.
- 17:50Speaker 3: Not including the damage to the military bases, which is,
- 17:55Speaker 3: I'm guessing, in the billions of dollars right there. Yeah.
- 18:00Speaker 3: And guess who wrote that letter? Five Democratic senators. The
- 18:05Speaker 3: Republican senators are still on board with the president, which
- 18:08Speaker 3: I think is going to end pretty much after the midterm.
- 18:12Speaker 3: So I think you're going to see a lot of
- 18:15Speaker 3: these Republicans who heretofore were in lockstep with the president.
- 18:20Speaker 2: Turning around and going the other way. I do believe that.
- 18:25Speaker 2: What a horrible story.
- 18:26Speaker 4: California-based Il Forneo. I don't know that I've ever been.
- 18:31Speaker 1: Have you?
- 18:32Speaker 2: Yeah, it's really good food. Great bread. Good Italian food.
- 18:37Speaker 2: It's a chain, right? It is a chain, yeah.
- 18:42Speaker 4: I've not been, but they're going to pay $ 3 million
- 18:46Speaker 4: to settle an EEOC lawsuit, and this alleges widespread sexual
- 18:52Speaker 4: harassment and retaliation affecting at least 100 female employees, many
- 18:57Speaker 4: of them teenagers. The company operates 15 of these restaurants
- 19:02Speaker 4: in California and Nevada. But you've got Pasadena, Irvine, Manhattan Beach,
- 19:09Speaker 4: and you've got workers reporting groping, sexual comments, retaliation, even
- 19:15Speaker 4: a rape. One instance, a teenage employee at the restaurant
- 19:19Speaker 4: in Palo Alto. told her managers she was raped by
- 19:23Speaker 4: an older male employee, but was told nothing could be
- 19:27Speaker 4: done because the rape happened outside of work, even though
- 19:31Speaker 4: the employee had experienced harassment at work months prior.
- 19:36Speaker 3: A couple of things about this settlement without admitting guilt.
- 19:40Speaker 3: And of course, immediately you assume if there is a
- 19:42Speaker 3: settlement without admitting guilt, they've effectively admitted guilt. Now, $ 3.
- 19:47Speaker 4: Million, 100 cases, that seems small.
- 19:51Speaker 2: It does seem small. This is the EEOC.
- 19:53Speaker 3: This is not the individuals who are filing a lawsuit
- 19:57Speaker 3: against Il Fornaio, which is still open. People don't have
- 20:01Speaker 3: to accept the settlement. They can go forward and sue
- 20:03Speaker 3: on their own. which is why a company under these
- 20:06Speaker 3: circumstances can never admit guilt because once they admit guilt,
- 20:10Speaker 3: it's over.
- 20:12Speaker 4: But here's the thing with this particular story, and I
- 20:15Speaker 4: understand that part. And, you know, restaurants have people working
- 20:19Speaker 4: in them and have good people and bad people. But
- 20:22Speaker 4: the complaints here are that the and this comes from
- 20:26Speaker 4: 2022 lawsuit alleges the restaurant change. created a sexually hostile
- 20:31Speaker 4: work environment, and that it goes from the top on down.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Right, I understand.
- 20:35Speaker 3: And I don't think anybody disputes that, certainly as soon
- 20:39Speaker 3: as they say without admitting guilt.
- 20:41Speaker 2: But I told you the reason they don't admit guilt.
- 20:43Speaker 3: Now, going beyond that, sometimes businesses simply pay up because
- 20:50Speaker 3: the cost of litigation, even if they think they're right,
- 20:54Speaker 3: is far greater than just settling up. Because if they're
- 20:58Speaker 3: going to go forward, this keeps in the public mind
- 21:01Speaker 3: sexual assault, all kinds of accusations, and businesses wanted.
- 21:05Speaker 2: To go away as quickly as possible.
- 21:08Speaker 4: But you're going to support a restaurant that had this
- 21:12Speaker 4: many and it says that it went all the way
- 21:14Speaker 4: up into management?
- 21:15Speaker 2: No, no, of course not.
- 21:16Speaker 3: Except that if this settles, it did, and it disappears
- 21:20Speaker 3: three years from now, no one's going to remember that.
- 21:24Speaker 3: because we have very, very short memories. But those are
- 21:27Speaker 3: the reasons why. I'm just telling you the legal reasons
- 21:29Speaker 3: why they did that. In the meantime, yeah, I think
- 21:32Speaker 3: everybody agrees.
- 21:34Speaker 2: That there's something wrong. I mean, I once got sued.
- 21:37Speaker 3: It was a ridiculous lawsuit.
- 21:40Speaker 2: I mean, ridiculous.
- 21:42Speaker 3: We paid a small amount, but we paid just to
- 21:44Speaker 3: get rid of it. It just wasn't worth the hassle.
- 21:48Speaker 3: And we were able to get away, you know, and
- 21:51Speaker 3: it just– Drove me crazy. And we paid a few
- 21:55Speaker 3: thousand dollars for a case to go away. Not much
- 21:57Speaker 3: money at all, because it would have cost us tens
- 22:00Speaker 3: of thousands to litigate, and I think we got away
- 22:03Speaker 3: for $ 5, 000.
- 22:04Speaker 2: But we paid. We paid to get rid of it.
- 22:07Speaker 2: So there's that in the mix, too.
- 22:13Speaker 5: Ebola is breaking out of its borders. Three Kenyan health
- 22:18Speaker 5: workers have tested positive for Ebola. After they cared for
- 22:23Speaker 5: the person who had the first confirmed case in the country,
- 22:27Speaker 5: another person linked to the first Ebola case also tested
- 22:29Speaker 5: positive while in quarantine, so the total number of cases
- 22:33Speaker 5: in Kenya now is seven. The first patient died October 5th,
- 22:37Speaker 5: days after arriving in Kenya from Congo, where the outbreak
- 22:41Speaker 5: has killed at least 4,300 people since May. And the
- 22:43Speaker 5: 4,300 people killed, it's a 50% death rate. Yeah, it's crazy.
- 22:50Speaker 3: And we were just in Kenya, and they asked, have
- 22:55Speaker 3: you been in Uganda or the Congo in the last
- 22:57Speaker 3: 21 days?
- 22:58Speaker 2: If the answer is yes, they threw you out. You
- 23:01Speaker 2: were gone.
- 23:01Speaker 3: You had to be in quarantine. We were in the
- 23:03Speaker 3: lounge with a couple who had gone to Uganda and
- 23:08Speaker 3: couldn't prove, because the visa stamp was on another document,
- 23:13Speaker 3: couldn't prove that they had been 21 days after their
- 23:17Speaker 3: visit to Uganda. They wouldn't let them on the airplanes.
- 23:21Speaker 3: would not let him on the airplane. Just said, nope.
- 23:24Speaker 3: And so they asked that question because of this. It's, yeah,
- 23:29Speaker 3: Ebola is not fun. It doesn't usually spread very far
- 23:34Speaker 3: because it burns itself out.
- 23:36Speaker 2: Dr.
- 23:36Speaker 3: Jim talked to us about that, that it's not one
- 23:39Speaker 3: of these diseases like COVID that spreads throughout the world.
- 23:44Speaker 3: It's so fast acting that it literally just burns itself out.
- 23:48Speaker 6: You're listening to Bill Handel on demand from KFI AM 640.
- 23:53Speaker 2: A couple weeks out in the midterms.
- 23:56Speaker 3: I haven't been this excited about midterms in a very
- 23:59Speaker 3: long time, only because we're going to see a sea
- 24:01Speaker 3: change big time going on across the country.
- 24:04Speaker 4: But doesn't that happen most of the time?
- 24:06Speaker 2: You know what?
- 24:07Speaker 3: Every single time, this is going to be the change
- 24:11Speaker 3: that America is going to have. A couple times there
- 24:14Speaker 3: really has been changes. Ronald Reagan, massive change in the
- 24:18Speaker 3: way we went for the better.
- 24:19Speaker 4: It happened with Obama as well.
- 24:23Speaker 3: Not as much as Ronald Reagan or certainly not as
- 24:26Speaker 3: much as what happened.
- 24:27Speaker 2: With Donald Trump. No, Reagan was pretty massive.
- 24:30Speaker 3: Yeah, Reagan was massive. And in retrospect, Reagan was pretty good.
- 24:35Speaker 3: And even Democrats will say that Reagan was certainly not
- 24:41Speaker 3: as bad as we're portrayed. prior to his presidency, prior
- 24:44Speaker 3: to his election.
- 24:45Speaker 5: And the same thing happened with Clinton, right?
- 24:47Speaker 3: And Clinton had it easy. Clinton was easy. Clinton didn't
- 24:50Speaker 3: change much of anything. Clinton got the best eight years
- 24:53Speaker 3: that we've ever had in the history of the United States.
- 24:55Speaker 3: He came in just as the recession ended. He came
- 25:01Speaker 3: in on the upswing, and he left on an upswing.
- 25:03Speaker 4: But he was presidential, notwithstanding.
- 25:06Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, no, he was presidential. I'm not arguing that.
- 25:08Speaker 2: I'm not arguing that.
- 25:09Speaker 3: Presidential and making sea changes or something else. Donald Trump
- 25:13Speaker 3: has made some pretty dramatic fundamental changes. He's going to
- 25:17Speaker 3: be walking out of this presidency having truly influenced America
- 25:22Speaker 3: in major, major ways. Our relationship with our allies who
- 25:26Speaker 3: are no longer our allies, it's just going to change.
- 25:31Speaker 3: We'll go through it at some point over and over again. Okay,
- 25:34Speaker 3: let's finish it up. Handle on the news on this
- 25:36Speaker 3: Monday morning.
- 25:37Speaker 2: Amy, Neil, and me.
- 25:39Speaker 4: Well, we've seen this before. A Cessna going down. They
- 25:43Speaker 4: tend to be these small planes tend to be the
- 25:45Speaker 4: ones going down and they just crush like tin cans sometimes.
- 25:49Speaker 4: But this one at least had a decent a decent
- 25:53Speaker 4: ending to it. Small plane carrying three people. One was
- 25:57Speaker 4: a child nosedived in San Jose right into traffic on
- 26:01Speaker 4: Saturday afternoon. And it's about 3 p.m. near the intersection
- 26:06Speaker 4: of Capitol Expressway and Excalibur Drive. And two adults and
- 26:11Speaker 4: this child were in the plane when it goes down.
- 26:13Speaker 4: But each passenger lived.
- 26:15Speaker 2: They walked away? Yeah. Did you see the video of
- 26:18Speaker 2: this thing crashing? I only saw the photo. The video
- 26:23Speaker 2: actually shows the whole thing. It is fascinating.
- 26:26Speaker 3: And you wonder, how did they get away? And they did,
- 26:28Speaker 3: which is wonderful. Here is a fun story.
- 26:32Speaker 2: You got to admit. Oh, my gosh.
- 26:34Speaker 5: This is not a fun story.
- 26:35Speaker 2: No, it's a fun story. No, it's not. It's an
- 26:38Speaker 2: ironic story. No, it is fun.
- 26:40Speaker 5: A priest in Ecuador was killed when a crucifix fell
- 26:44Speaker 5: on him during mass.
- 26:47Speaker 2: Now, how can that not be fun? It's not fun.
- 26:52Speaker 3: Well, first of all, when you go to a church,
- 26:54Speaker 3: the Church of the Fallen Cross on someone's head, that's
- 26:57Speaker 3: going to tell you something. Second of all, this is
- 27:02Speaker 3: a religion at its best. The crucifix falls on a priest's.
- 27:07Speaker 2: Head during Mass. I view that as entertainment with the capitalists.
- 27:12Speaker 4: It doesn't say this in this story, but apparently the
- 27:17Speaker 4: priest had just talked about how everyone's going to eventually die.
- 27:20Speaker 2: See, that's even better.
- 27:22Speaker 4: Yeah, it's not in the story, but I read a
- 27:24Speaker 4: couple ones.
- 27:25Speaker 2: And there's pictures. Oh, that's fantastic.
- 27:28Speaker 4: I don't know if there's video, but the pictures I
- 27:30Speaker 4: saw was priest with crucifix on the wall, priest with
- 27:34Speaker 4: crucifix on the wall, no priest, no crucifix on the wall.
- 27:37Speaker 5: Oh, no, there's video. It was live stream.
- 27:40Speaker 2: So here he is.
- 27:41Speaker 5: They've taken it down, but it's still up there.
- 27:43Speaker 2: So here he is.
- 27:44Speaker 3: He's talking about death, right? And he raises his arms
- 27:48Speaker 3: in the sky and he says, Jesus. And the crucifix
- 27:51Speaker 3: comes smashing down on his head. How do you beat that?
- 27:58Speaker 2: I'm sorry.
- 27:58Speaker 4: No, please.
- 28:00Speaker 2: Go ahead.
- 28:00Speaker 4: Take more victory laps.
- 28:04Speaker 2: You know, I... Okay, moving on.
- 28:06Speaker 3: I'm sure we're going to get a few emails from that.
- 28:09Speaker 2: One, okay? Well, I hope so. Yeah, I hope so.
- 28:12Speaker 4: Okay, so you remember those stories about the three deaths
- 28:16Speaker 4: at this year's Burning Man? And they were all on
- 28:20Speaker 4: the older side. I don't want to say old because
- 28:23Speaker 4: 62 is.
- 28:24Speaker 2: Not old anymore.
- 28:25Speaker 4: But you have three men going down, and it turns
- 28:29Speaker 4: out two of them were due to drug toxicity.
- 28:33Speaker 2: But one of them seemed to have some sort of
- 28:37Speaker 2: heart condition. He had a heart attack.
- 28:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 28:39Speaker 2: He had a heart attack. How many people show up
- 28:40Speaker 2: at Burning Man?
- 28:41Speaker 3: I don't know, hundreds of thousands of people show up there.
- 28:43Speaker 2: And so you're going to have a heart attack. Okay. Yeah.
- 28:47Speaker 4: So, unfortunately, you know, strangely enough, the older ones were
- 28:50Speaker 4: the ones that died of, you know, drug issues. And
- 28:53Speaker 4: it seems the 51-year-old is the one that had the
- 28:58Speaker 4: heart attack, it looks like. Yeah. You know, it's an
- 29:02Speaker 4: old man's game over there these days. It used to
- 29:04Speaker 4: be a bunch of young people. Now, you know, it's
- 29:08Speaker 4: got Handel with disco pants on riding bicycles in the desert.
- 29:13Speaker 3: That's me. Waiting for the disco ball to hit my head.
- 29:18Speaker 3: Waiting for the disco ball to hit my head and
- 29:21Speaker 3: kill me.
- 29:22Speaker 4: It's become, Burning Man has become Burning Man midlife crisis,
- 29:27Speaker 4: I think.
- 29:30Speaker 2: All right, Amy, I think this may be the last one.
- 29:34Speaker 5: Maybe it's time to give up on this one. So
- 29:36Speaker 5: an expedition to a remote Pacific island. to once again
- 29:42Speaker 5: see if they could answer that age-old question, where the
- 29:44Speaker 5: heck is the wreckage of Amelia Earhart's plane, has come
- 29:48Speaker 5: up empty. Evidence gathered at the Nikumaro... Island confirmed that
- 29:55Speaker 5: the visual anomaly first seen on satellite imagery in 2020
- 29:59Speaker 5: that was suspected to be Amelia Earhart's missing plane that
- 30:03Speaker 5: went down like 90 years ago was really just a
- 30:05Speaker 5: collection of large trees deposited along a peninsula's sand spit.
- 30:11Speaker 2: Amelia Earhart, of course, disappeared. What is it? It's 90
- 30:15Speaker 2: something years ago when she did.
- 30:16Speaker 3: Do you know what the airport she used where she
- 30:19Speaker 3: always flew out of Hollywood Burbank?
- 30:22Speaker 2: Which is news because they just opened up the new terminal.
- 30:24Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, they have a bunch of stuff about her,
- 30:27Speaker 4: like a museum.
- 30:28Speaker 2: In North Hollywood, oh, yeah. I mean, that was her
- 30:30Speaker 2: airport that she flew out of.
- 30:33Speaker 3: And it was, you could see her Lockheed Electra that
- 30:36Speaker 3: was custom made for her. Interestingly, remember the movie with
- 30:41Speaker 3: Hillary Swank?
- 30:43Speaker 2: Phenomenal.
- 30:44Speaker 3: And she looked just like, just like Amelia Earhart. even
- 30:50Speaker 3: to the point where when you looked at the old video,
- 30:54Speaker 3: old newsreels, it looked just like Hillary Swank.
- 30:56Speaker 4: Did they use old-timey talk? Did she go, like, I'm
- 31:00Speaker 4: going to fly this plane, see? Stuff like that?
- 31:03Speaker 2: They're not going to put me down just because I'm
- 31:05Speaker 2: a dame.
- 31:07Speaker 3: She sounded just like James Cagney. She did the best
- 31:11Speaker 3: James Cagney you've ever heard in your life.
- 31:13Speaker 4: Oh, I'm going to fly this plane so far. You
- 31:16Speaker 4: boys will see.
- 31:17Speaker 2: Nope, nope. Okay, I take that back. I'll do it
- 31:20Speaker 2: with my gams. Catherine Hepburn. Okay, got it. Catherine Hepburn. Yo, poop.
- 31:26Speaker 2: That's it. That's who we're talking about. We're done, guys.
- 31:29Speaker 2: That's it. We are finished with the news. Coming up.
- 31:34Speaker 3: Latino support for the president is melting, much like the
- 31:38Speaker 3: Wicked Witch of the West.
- 31:41Speaker 2: Or is that the East? I'm melting. I'm melting. I
- 31:45Speaker 2: always get those two confused. That would be the West.
- 31:48Speaker 3: The Wicked Witch of the West. Okay, we're going to
- 31:51Speaker 3: be back with that. This is KFI AM 640.
- 31:56Speaker 1: You've been listening to The Bill Handel Show. Catch my
- 31:58Speaker 1: show Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and
- 32:01Speaker 1: anytime on demand on the iHeartRadio app.
