- 0:00Speaker 1: Four-finger discount, dude.
- 0:17Speaker 2: It's the Season 21 wrap-up here of Four Finger Discount.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Thank you all for sticking with us for the entirety
- 0:23Speaker 2: of Season 21. I'm not going to lie, Season 21
- 0:25Speaker 2: was a lot more enjoyable than I thought it was
- 0:27Speaker 2: going to be. What are your thoughts going into Season 21?
- 0:30Speaker 1: Mr.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Guy Davis, by the way.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Hi, yeah, he's Dan Doan Guy.
- 0:32Speaker 2: I am, yes, Dan Doan indeed. Season 21 was where
- 0:36Speaker 2: it's become blatantly obvious, running through the episodes, I had
- 0:39Speaker 2: stopped watching the show. I wasn't watching the show week
- 0:41Speaker 2: to week by this point.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Clearly.
- 0:44Speaker 2: I reckon I've maybe seen maybe two or three of
- 0:45Speaker 2: them going into it. And I didn't have very high hopes.
- 0:49Speaker 2: I'm not going to lie. I thought it was going
- 0:51Speaker 2: to be a real struggle. I enjoyed a lot more
- 0:54Speaker 2: than this light, I thought.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Okay. I see where you're coming from. Sort of feel
- 1:00Speaker 1: the same way in some ways. Although for me, this
- 1:04Speaker 1: felt very much like, not so much, oh, this is
- 1:07Speaker 1: a great episode, but going through it's like, I'm really
- 1:10Speaker 1: going to have to pick and choose. I'm really going
- 1:12Speaker 1: to have to sort of keep my eye on the ball.
- 1:13Speaker 1: It's like, oh, I like that. I like that guest performance.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Or like, oh.
- 1:16Speaker 1: A few good gags in there or more often than
- 1:19Speaker 1: not you had a good idea to begin with but
- 1:22Speaker 1: you just couldn't follow through on it or you didn't
- 1:25Speaker 1: follow through.
- 1:25Speaker 2: On it or you had too many ideas oh yeah
- 1:28Speaker 2: yeah or you like and nothing really got fleshed out.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Yeah so you smushed together three ideas into one episode
- 1:33Speaker 1: and hoped that it would sort of work and more
- 1:37Speaker 1: often than not it didn't quite hit the mark.
- 1:39Speaker 2: It did feel like in this season in particular we
- 1:41Speaker 2: were doing a lot of fixing what we would consider
- 1:43Speaker 2: fixing the stories.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Sure yeah Now, maybe I'm kind of high on our
- 1:49Speaker 1: sort of creative abilities in that regard, but I often
- 1:51Speaker 1: think that some of the things that we came up
- 1:53Speaker 1: with to either major tweaks or complete overhauls for certain episodes,
- 1:57Speaker 1: I think we did a pretty good job with that.
- 1:59Speaker 1: I would watch that episode.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, we recently had an interview, a discussion you
- 2:05Speaker 2: would call, it wasn't really an interview, a chat with
- 2:06Speaker 2: Mike Reese, which hasn't been released yet, but it's going
- 2:08Speaker 2: to be coming up in your feeds in a couple
- 2:09Speaker 2: of weeks. Mike Reese, our conversation with him, and he
- 2:12Speaker 2: was just talking about how Sometimes it got to a point,
- 2:14Speaker 2: maybe it was with David Merkin. One of the two
- 2:16Speaker 2: were talking about how it got to the point. No,
- 2:18Speaker 2: it was Mike because Mike was saying how even in
- 2:20Speaker 2: the golden era, there would come a point where jokes
- 2:22Speaker 2: would get through where they're like, we're just really tired
- 2:25Speaker 2: and we just, this will do. And he goes, and
- 2:28Speaker 2: he still looks back on those episodes now and thinks,
- 2:30Speaker 2: I really wish I didn't because it stands out to me.
- 2:32Speaker 2: He goes, that's such a level of, what's the term? Quality.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Quality control. And he, because he was working on the show,
- 2:40Speaker 2: he can see and go, that joke doesn't land because
- 2:43Speaker 2: we wanted to get home. It feels like there's a
- 2:46Speaker 2: lot of that happening now where it's just, what can
- 2:49Speaker 2: we do? That'll work. As opposed to, what is the best?
- 2:53Speaker 2: Is that really the best thing? It's like, yeah, that works.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Next one. Yeah, it works. Next one. As opposed to,
- 2:58Speaker 2: can we do better?
- 2:59Speaker 1: Yeah. And the further you go along in the run
- 3:02Speaker 1: of the series, when you reach something like season 21, yeah,
- 3:06Speaker 1: that quality seems to have dropped even further. I mean,
- 3:10Speaker 1: it's not so much, Oh, this is an okay placeholder joke.
- 3:14Speaker 1: It's like, it's not even really a joke. It's just
- 3:16Speaker 1: something that's like, we need to move the story forward.
- 3:19Speaker 1: So this is going to happen. Yeah. Or, you know,
- 3:22Speaker 1: this is a situation or this is something that home
- 3:24Speaker 1: is going to do or whatever. And, but we haven't really,
- 3:26Speaker 1: when I say we, I'm talking about they, the other
- 3:29Speaker 1: writers of the show or creators of the show haven't yet.
- 3:33Speaker 1: It's not that I didn't put in any effort, but
- 3:35Speaker 1: the effort that they did put in was substantially lower
- 3:38Speaker 1: than the tip top days. And even the sort of
- 3:40Speaker 1: the middling days.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:42Speaker 1: That's why it struck me anyway. And I feel bad
- 3:44Speaker 1: saying that because, you know, creativity is hard. It's not
- 3:47Speaker 1: an easy thing. You know, it requires a bit of
- 3:50Speaker 1: elbow grease and, you know, it requires inspiration but it
- 3:53Speaker 1: also requires perspiration, as they say. Yeah, and I don't
- 3:56Speaker 1: want to say that these guys, oh, you haven't done
- 3:58Speaker 1: the work or you didn't do your homework or anything
- 4:00Speaker 1: like that. But that's how it felt sometimes.
- 4:03Speaker 2: There also were a couple of episodes in this season,
- 4:05Speaker 2: which I think we should start with, that I thought
- 4:07Speaker 2: were just atrocious. Oh, yeah.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Well, that's the thing.
- 4:09Speaker 2: I mean, when we- By the way, I've just realized
- 4:12Speaker 2: what you look like with those glasses when they're askew.
- 4:14Speaker 2: It reminds me of Jerry Lewis. What's the movie when
- 4:16Speaker 2: he's the- Nutty Professor? Nutty Professor. That's right, guys.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Lady.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Yeah. I'm like, what movie poster does it look like?
- 4:24Speaker 2: It's the Nutty Professor.
- 4:26Speaker 1: If you are watching this on video, if we've clipped
- 4:29Speaker 1: it into whatever, yes. One of the arms from my
- 4:31Speaker 1: glasses is missing. The pin fell out, and I'm getting
- 4:34Speaker 1: them fixed today.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Okay. Please don't. What?
- 4:38Speaker 1: I could just have them like this from now on.
- 4:40Speaker 2: What did Louise say? Have you shown Louise the glasses?
- 4:44Speaker 2: He just woke up to a dinner night with her friends.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Hello, honey.
- 4:50Speaker 2: And just don't explain it.
- 4:51Speaker 1: You guys are still wearing two arms on your glasses?
- 4:56Speaker 1: It's 2026, guys. Come on. Get with the times. No,
- 5:01Speaker 1: I need to get these fixed. But they're still working
- 5:03Speaker 1: in the interim. I can read my notes.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Yes, but we're talking about atrocious episodes, though.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Yes, indeed. We always do a wrap-up at the end
- 5:08Speaker 1: of a season when we're done, and Dano said, yeah,
- 5:11Speaker 1: we usually do our top fives. You'll try to think
- 5:14Speaker 1: of mine. I'll try to think of yours. We'll do
- 5:16Speaker 1: that kind of thing. He said, oh, yeah, we'd also
- 5:17Speaker 1: better talk about, yeah, what didn't work this season. There
- 5:21Speaker 1: were a few, and I think there was one that
- 5:23Speaker 1: really stood out. I mean, you said, let's do one
- 5:25Speaker 1: each where it's like this was the bottom of the barrel.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Yeah. Did we pick the same thing.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Do you think? Well, I thought there was two in
- 5:31Speaker 2: this season that were like really, really shit.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Okay.
- 5:34Speaker 2: So I'm going to get that up the list because
- 5:36Speaker 2: we'll cover them both, all right? So one of them
- 5:41Speaker 2: was the color yellow and the other one was the
- 5:43Speaker 2: greatest story ever doed.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Yes.
- 5:45Speaker 2: So the greatest story ever doed for me, I was just...
- 5:48Speaker 2: Because I had the Sacha Baron Cohen as the tour
- 5:51Speaker 2: guide and whatnot, but the story was just so shit.
- 5:54Speaker 2: It was just... The Simpsons are... Going to- Going to Israel.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Going to Israel. And it was just like, what's the-
- 6:02Speaker 2: The whole concept was Flanders was taking them there to
- 6:05Speaker 2: teach them. And he's paying for their trip. And Homer's
- 6:08Speaker 2: a jerk there. And I'm just like, what? Yeah.
- 6:11Speaker 1: It failed or was just a misfire on so many levels.
- 6:16Speaker 1: I mean, it didn't do right by Flanders. It- made
- 6:19Speaker 1: Homer even more of a boorish jerk than he had been,
- 6:22Speaker 1: and that's saying something.
- 6:23Speaker 2: It was just a bunch of bits.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Yeah. Everything with Sacha Baron Cohen was self-indulgent. I mean,
- 6:31Speaker 1: I think he put in the work, but no one
- 6:33Speaker 1: told him, it's like, that's not exactly what we need.
- 6:35Speaker 2: I re-watched certain bits of it this morning, and I
- 6:37Speaker 2: was like, it feels like either he was going off script,
- 6:40Speaker 2: and they were too polite to say, no, we don't
- 6:42Speaker 2: really want that, or they were just starstruck, and they're like, oh,
- 6:45Speaker 2: people will love this.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Well, yeah.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Who knows?
- 6:46Speaker 1: Yeah, it's It's SBC. You can do no wrong.
- 6:49Speaker 2: He's Borat. Yeah, yeah.
- 6:51Speaker 1: So, oh, we could be creating a whole new character here.
- 6:53Speaker 1: It's like, you didn't really.
- 6:55Speaker 2: No.
- 6:55Speaker 1: And, yeah, I think when we reviewed it, yeah, if
- 7:00Speaker 1: you go back and listen to that episode, we're just
- 7:01Speaker 1: sort of stunned by how misguided and kind of atrocious
- 7:07Speaker 1: it is.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Yeah. And then the color yellow, which is them talking
- 7:10Speaker 2: about the family tree and whatnot. Yes. And it just
- 7:13Speaker 2: defies all logic. And I know continuity is not a thing,
- 7:16Speaker 2: but we discussed with David Merkin, which hasn't also been
- 7:19Speaker 2: released yet, but our chat with David Merkin, and he
- 7:21Speaker 2: was talking about the importance of continuity. Yeah. And it's
- 7:23Speaker 2: what we say. He goes, people invest time in this show.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Sure.
- 7:26Speaker 2: People invest their emotions in these characters and their time
- 7:30Speaker 2: in these characters. If none of that matters, then why
- 7:33Speaker 2: should any of us care?
- 7:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Why should we as writers care? If the continuity of
- 7:38Speaker 2: the characters doesn't matter, then what are we doing?
- 7:40Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. As I've always said, you need to have
- 7:43Speaker 1: flexibility within the framework. You've got to have a framework
- 7:46Speaker 1: that people can rely on, that people can trust. Like, okay,
- 7:49Speaker 1: this is the internal logic of The Simpsons. The family
- 7:52Speaker 1: is always going to be this. And yeah, these are
- 7:57Speaker 1: the things that we can work from. We can tweak
- 7:58Speaker 1: them a little bit. We can mess around with them.
- 8:00Speaker 1: And occasionally when we take sort of big swings or
- 8:02Speaker 1: big departures, I'm like, oh, well, that's an interesting sort
- 8:06Speaker 1: of take on things. But no, generally you have to
- 8:07Speaker 1: remain Fairly straightforward. If you've been, certainly if you've been
- 8:10Speaker 1: going for as long as the Simpsons has.
- 8:11Speaker 2: I just remember the color yellow just not being funny.
- 8:15Speaker 2: It just, I don't know if it's the end and
- 8:16Speaker 2: I went, what the hell was that?
- 8:18Speaker 1: Well, that's the thing. I mean, if you're talking about,
- 8:20Speaker 1: you know, America's history with slavery, I mean, that's not exactly,
- 8:23Speaker 1: first of all.
- 8:24Speaker 2: That's the thing. Had to get comedy out of that
- 8:25Speaker 2: topic in the first place. Had to get yucks out
- 8:27Speaker 2: of it.
- 8:28Speaker 1: But then, yeah, just rewriting or replanting the whole Simpsons
- 8:32Speaker 1: family tree. Rewriting history.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Is nutty.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Yeah. And, It didn't really work.
- 8:37Speaker 2: No, it didn't work. So they were my two least
- 8:39Speaker 2: favorites of the season.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Yeah. Look, I'm not quite as, I don't really remember
- 8:44Speaker 1: the color yellow as much, but yeah, Greatest Story Ever
- 8:46Speaker 1: Dode was so bad that it kind of stuck in
- 8:48Speaker 1: my head and lives there rent free.
- 8:49Speaker 2: I had forgotten about it until I went through the
- 8:51Speaker 2: list and I was like, oh, my mind had thankfully
- 8:53Speaker 2: erased that one. But it's back now. But yeah, they're
- 8:56Speaker 2: the two least favorites. So let's go through our top five.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Sure.
- 8:58Speaker 2: I haven't guessed what your top five will be, but
- 9:00Speaker 2: I'm going to try and have a guess. Okay. I reckon, well,
- 9:03Speaker 2: you're going to have Chief of Hearts in there. I
- 9:04Speaker 2: reckon you'll have Chief of Hearts. I reckon you'll have
- 9:06Speaker 2: American History Excellent. I think you'll have Mo Letter Blues, maybe. Yeah,
- 9:12Speaker 2: maybe Mo Letter Blues. I think you'll have Thursdays with Amy.
- 9:18Speaker 2: And The Devil Wears Nada. What have you got?
- 9:20Speaker 1: Are you talking about that I think you've got? Yeah, yeah. Okay, then.
- 9:23Speaker 2: I think you've got- You can see my list.
- 9:29Speaker 1: I think you've got Home of the Whopper.
- 9:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Boy Meets Curl. Chief of Hearts, Thursdays with Aby, and
- 9:35Speaker 1: Once Upon a Time in Springfield. Okay. Yeah.
- 9:37Speaker 2: Good solid guesses.
- 9:39Speaker 1: I initially gave myself some of those, but then I
- 9:41Speaker 1: was thinking about, I mean, not that I'd, I think
- 9:44Speaker 1: we can double up.
- 9:45Speaker 2: There's going to be crossover. Of course there's going to
- 9:46Speaker 2: be overlap. Some episodes will just stand out to this season.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:49Speaker 1: But then thinking about it more, it's like, then it
- 9:52Speaker 1: is like an episode where this kind of thing happens.
- 9:55Speaker 1: So yeah, let's put that one in. Yeah.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Okay. Well, I'll start with one of mine. Right. So
- 9:59Speaker 2: no particular order. My number one is my number one.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Everything else is no particular order. I'll go with Pranks
- 10:05Speaker 2: and Greens. So this is Bart meeting his idol, who
- 10:07Speaker 2: was Andy Hamilton, who was the prankster at Springfield Elementary
- 10:10Speaker 2: before he was.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Voiced by Jonah Hill.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Indeed. Yes. And I just thought it was a fun
- 10:15Speaker 2: story that puts a spotlight on the importance of having
- 10:17Speaker 2: a sense of direction in your life. You know, it's
- 10:20Speaker 2: all right to, you know, be a larrikin and have fun,
- 10:22Speaker 2: but you've got to have some sort of idea of
- 10:24Speaker 2: where you're going. And Bart meets his hero here. This
- 10:26Speaker 2: was the era of, you know, everyone was doing pranks
- 10:29Speaker 2: on YouTube and that kind of thing. I don't think
- 10:31Speaker 2: pranks on YouTube are really that much of a thing. Well,
- 10:33Speaker 2: not as big as they used to be.
- 10:34Speaker 1: It's reached such a saturation level that you have to
- 10:36Speaker 1: be really good. And also you have to be a
- 10:38Speaker 1: really sort of charismatic and likable presence pulling off this
- 10:41Speaker 1: kind of thing as opposed to just being a little stinker.
- 10:43Speaker 2: Because people see, I think people see pranks now as, oh,
- 10:46Speaker 2: fuck off, go away, as opposed to, oh, that guy's
- 10:48Speaker 2: so funny. Yeah. The idea of what a prankster is
- 10:52Speaker 2: has changed. The idea of a podcast. Podcasts back in
- 10:55Speaker 2: the day was like, that's cool. That's different. Now it's everyone.
- 10:57Speaker 1: Now it's radio.
- 10:58Speaker 2: Yeah. And the thing with pranks too is we've seen
- 11:00Speaker 2: it all before. We've all seen the bike being tied
- 11:04Speaker 2: to a tree. We've all seen the farting in front
- 11:06Speaker 2: of people on an escalator prank. It's come up with
- 11:09Speaker 2: something different.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Now, essentially, when I think of internet pranks, I think
- 11:13Speaker 1: of someone who's just gone overseas and is basically ruining Japan. Yeah.
- 11:18Speaker 2: I get really annoyed. When I see these videos of
- 11:20Speaker 2: people who their whole thing is just, you know, it's
- 11:24Speaker 2: husband and wife pranking each other. And I'm like, these
- 11:26Speaker 2: are so orchestrated and fake and set up. It's just like...
- 11:29Speaker 2: And there's one guy who changes things with AI in
- 11:33Speaker 2: movies and his grandma watches. And the first time I
- 11:36Speaker 2: watched one, it was like he put her in the movie.
- 11:38Speaker 2: She was like, what the fuck is this? This is
- 11:40Speaker 2: fucking great. And then I thought it was funny. And
- 11:42Speaker 2: then I went through like their feed. I'm like, oh,
- 11:43Speaker 2: it's just the same thing. And she turns and goes,
- 11:46Speaker 2: what the fuck am I doing in this fucking movie?
- 11:48Speaker 1: I'm like.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Oh, but you can count on the seventh or eighth time.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Oh, it's a bit. Oh, you're doing a bit.
- 11:54Speaker 2: But they're really successful. And I'm just like, oh, so
- 11:57Speaker 2: that's what people are doing now? Yeah. But I get
- 11:59Speaker 2: really annoyed by the orchestrated pranks like that. But I
- 12:01Speaker 2: just liked here that Bart was the one who actually
- 12:04Speaker 2: got Andy's life back on track. But I also liked
- 12:06Speaker 2: the B plot here. And the B plot was the
- 12:07Speaker 2: one where Marge was being judged in the mother's group
- 12:09Speaker 2: for serving unhealthy snacks.
- 12:11Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 12:11Speaker 2: And I was like, I've lived through that. And it's
- 12:13Speaker 2: very accurate. It's just- Usually first times- In terms of
- 12:16Speaker 2: what you have- What you're serving your kids, right? It's
- 12:18Speaker 2: usually first time parents, they've read all the books now
- 12:21Speaker 2: and they've watched all the videos and it's, this is
- 12:23Speaker 2: how you're supposed to do it. And there's no fucking way,
- 12:25Speaker 2: there's no right or wrong way, right? There are wrong ways,
- 12:28Speaker 2: but there's no, this is how you should do it.
- 12:30Speaker 2: Every kid's different. There's nothing wrong with giving your kids
- 12:33Speaker 2: some unhealthy snacks from time to time. It's all about balance, right?
- 12:35Speaker 2: If that's all you give them, so be it. But A,
- 12:39Speaker 2: don't get annoyed if your child eats something that's unhealthy. B,
- 12:41Speaker 2: don't judge someone else for what they want to do
- 12:42Speaker 2: with their kid as well. If their kid is fine-
- 12:44Speaker 2: If they're not abusing their child, just mind your own business.
- 12:48Speaker 2: So I liked the B-plot in this one as well,
- 12:50Speaker 2: Pranks and Greens.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Well, true, yeah.
- 12:52Speaker 2: And it ends up becoming the writer for Krusty as well.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Yeah, that B-plot is an interesting one. I mean, as
- 12:57Speaker 1: everyone knows, I'm no parent or anything like that, but
- 12:59Speaker 1: I'm imagining, yeah, as you said, with first-time parents, it's
- 13:02Speaker 1: very much a thing of like, not I'm going to
- 13:05Speaker 1: be the first parent to get it exactly right all
- 13:07Speaker 1: the time, but you are like, holy shit, this is
- 13:10Speaker 1: a big responsibility. I'm going to try and dot every
- 13:13Speaker 1: I and cross every T. And then you realize the
- 13:16Speaker 1: lesson that every parent is essential. It's like, well, some
- 13:20Speaker 1: of the I's and T's are going to go uncrossed
- 13:22Speaker 1: and undotted at some stage. I'm going to get as
- 13:24Speaker 1: many right as I can. But occasionally, sorry, the TV
- 13:29Speaker 1: is going to have to be the babysitter for like
- 13:31Speaker 1: 20 minutes or so. Or, okay, fine, it's mac and
- 13:35Speaker 1: cheese out of the box for dinner. Even though I
- 13:38Speaker 1: was going to do some organic shit. you want a
- 13:41Speaker 1: mac and cheese? And honestly, this is not the hill
- 13:44Speaker 1: I'm going to die on.
- 13:44Speaker 2: Sometimes I get home and I'm just like, do you
- 13:47Speaker 2: just want dinosaur spaghetti out of the tin? Not straight
- 13:49Speaker 2: out of the tin, like heat it up, obviously. They're
- 13:50Speaker 2: just like, yes! I love it. I'm like, it's not nutritious,
- 13:53Speaker 2: but you know what? It's better than fucking chicken nuggets. Sure.
- 13:56Speaker 2: It's just once at a time, occasionally just having some
- 13:59Speaker 2: tin food. Who cares? But the best advice as a
- 14:02Speaker 2: parent of two kids now that I can give new
- 14:04Speaker 2: parents is to listen to advice. Don't read the books.
- 14:08Speaker 2: Don't worry about what they say you should be doing,
- 14:10Speaker 2: what you should be doing. Listen to people who have
- 14:12Speaker 2: experienced it themselves. Yes. People offering you advice. Because I,
- 14:16Speaker 2: when we first had Elliot, was very standoffish. You know,
- 14:18Speaker 2: my mum would say, Mum, I know what I'm doing. Dad,
- 14:22Speaker 2: I know what I'm doing. I know what I'm doing.
- 14:23Speaker 2: And I didn't listen to the advice. And then like
- 14:26Speaker 2: six months later, you look back and you think, oh,
- 14:28Speaker 2: if I just listened to them in the first place,
- 14:30Speaker 2: I probably would have been fine. So don't be stubborn.
- 14:32Speaker 2: You won't get it right. There is no such thing
- 14:34Speaker 2: as right.
- 14:34Speaker 1: You took the long road.
- 14:35Speaker 2: When someone is offering you advice about what you should
- 14:37Speaker 2: do for your kid, it might not be the right answer,
- 14:40Speaker 2: but listen to it, take it on board, and then decide.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Don't just go, no, no, I'm not listening. Listen to it,
- 14:45Speaker 2: take it on board, and decide whether it's worth it.
- 14:47Speaker 1: Yeah, because sometimes you're receiving advice like, oh, God, it's
- 14:51Speaker 1: my kid, not yours. Or you're a goddamn no-no. I mean, sometimes, yeah,
- 14:55Speaker 1: the way you receive that information, even though it's probably
- 14:57Speaker 1: perfectly valid, it's kind of like, But the way that
- 14:59Speaker 1: you're delivering it is making me not want to listen
- 15:01Speaker 1: to it. The way I always.
- 15:02Speaker 2: I think the reason I didn't take it well at
- 15:05Speaker 2: the time was I saw it as, you don't think
- 15:07Speaker 2: I know what I'm doing.
- 15:08Speaker 1: Correct.
- 15:09Speaker 2: And I quickly realized, I don't fucking know what I'm doing.
- 15:12Speaker 2: That's why I should have listened to what they were saying.
- 15:14Speaker 2: But anyway, Pranks and Grains got in my top five.
- 15:16Speaker 1: What's got.
- 15:16Speaker 2: to your top five?
- 15:17Speaker 1: Look, this is maybe a bit of a surprising one
- 15:19Speaker 1: to get in my top five, but I put in
- 15:21Speaker 1: Judge Me Tender.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Really? Okay. I thought about it. I know you love Mo,
- 15:24Speaker 2: but I just remember it being such a blatant crossover
- 15:27Speaker 2: with American Idol. I was like, eh.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Yeah, well, that's the thing. I mean, you mentioned that
- 15:31Speaker 1: I might like Mo Letter Blues, and that is a
- 15:33Speaker 1: very Mo-heavy episode, but also, yeah, the structure of that
- 15:36Speaker 1: is just so stupid. And the structure of that is confusing,
- 15:40Speaker 1: and the way that it presents the characters who get
- 15:42Speaker 1: this letter from Mo.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Yeah. It's a parody of that 50s or 60s movie,
- 15:47Speaker 2: wasn't it? It's a parody from an old movie called
- 15:49Speaker 2: A Letter to Three Wives. Yeah.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Which I think when we reviewed the episode, I said,
- 15:54Speaker 1: this is pretty obscure stuff to be drawing inspiration from.
- 15:58Speaker 2: And we also touched on there, we've entered the era
- 16:00Speaker 2: where rather than just do bits that are parodying old films,
- 16:04Speaker 2: it's the entire story is a parody of the film
- 16:07Speaker 2: to the point where if you don't quite know the
- 16:09Speaker 2: source material- It doesn't quite land.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:12Speaker 2: Once you know the source material, you're like, oh, I
- 16:14Speaker 2: see what you're going with here. But if it's the
- 16:16Speaker 2: entire story is based on, oh, this is the parody
- 16:18Speaker 2: of this story, you're like, but I don't know that story.
- 16:21Speaker 1: Yeah. What are you doing? Yeah, Let the Three Wives
- 16:23Speaker 1: is old enough that, as you were saying, with older
- 16:26Speaker 1: episodes of The Simpsons or earlier seasons of The Simpsons
- 16:28Speaker 1: when they would have references or they'd be taking off something,
- 16:31Speaker 1: you could ask your older sibling or your parents would go, oh,
- 16:34Speaker 1: they're doing this. With Mo Letter Blues- You'd have to
- 16:38Speaker 1: be asking your grandparents, essentially. And.
- 16:43Speaker 2: And it's not.
- 16:44Speaker 1: That's not necessarily a bad.
- 16:45Speaker 2: Thing, but... And it's not a popular movie or TV...
- 16:47Speaker 2: Is it a movie or TV show?
- 16:48Speaker 1: It's a movie, yeah. It's not a popular movie, really. Well, it's...
- 16:52Speaker 1: I think you'd have to be sort of like a.
- 16:53Speaker 2: It's not Indiana Jones, is what I'm saying.
- 16:54Speaker 1: No. You know what I mean? No, or even like Casablanca.
- 16:56Speaker 1: I mean, it's an old black and white movie.
- 16:58Speaker 2: But everyone knows Casablanca.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:00Speaker 2: Or knows the core moments.
- 17:02Speaker 1: From it, absolutely. Yeah, but with this, it's like... And look,
- 17:05Speaker 1: I think the... The central idea is not necessarily a
- 17:10Speaker 1: bad one, but it's just executed so poorly here. So
- 17:14Speaker 1: that's in Mo Letter Blues. Going back to Judge Me Tender, again,
- 17:18Speaker 1: it talks about what we were saying about, oh, we
- 17:20Speaker 1: fixed a few episodes. And the idea that we came
- 17:22Speaker 1: up with, that Mo becomes like a pro heckler for
- 17:27Speaker 1: the likes of Krusty, so to throw off the competition,
- 17:29Speaker 1: it's like, yeah, I think that could actually work. And Mo.
- 17:35Speaker 2: Having a tour with the Life Factory.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, check out our most recent episode of Going
- 17:43Speaker 1: Down to South Park where we talk about- We apologize.
- 17:46Speaker 1: We apologize. Just like Michael Richards. Kiss it. Yeah, making
- 17:54Speaker 1: Mo- I like an episode where Mo gets to sort
- 17:57Speaker 1: of use his powers for good or to his benefit because,
- 18:01Speaker 1: you know, he's so downtrodden and he's so sort of dismissed.
- 18:04Speaker 1: Then when he gets an opportunity to, hey, we like
- 18:07Speaker 1: this guy for, admittedly, all the wrong reasons, I can
- 18:11Speaker 1: roll with that. So, yeah, the fact that it did
- 18:13Speaker 1: become a blatant crossover in its second half, too blatant
- 18:18Speaker 1: in a lot of ways. I mean, I like the
- 18:20Speaker 1: idea of Mo getting into the spotlight. Hey, we've recruited
- 18:23Speaker 1: him for American Idol, and he finds a nemesis in
- 18:26Speaker 1: Simon Cowell. Two evil geniuses are going up against one another.
- 18:30Speaker 1: That's not bad either. It didn't quite stick the landing.
- 18:33Speaker 1: In fact, it didn't really stick the landing at all.
- 18:35Speaker 1: It sort of landed and broke its leg.
- 18:36Speaker 2: But it's in your top five.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Which says a lot about season 25. I like Judge
- 18:44Speaker 1: Me Tender for what it could have been as opposed
- 18:46Speaker 1: to what it was. And there's enough in there that
- 18:48Speaker 1: makes me go, yeah, we could do something with this.
- 18:51Speaker 2: Yep. My next one is Million Dollar Maybe. I just
- 18:54Speaker 2: thought this was a really fun concept. It's the one
- 18:56Speaker 2: where Homer doesn't go to the wedding. He goes and
- 18:59Speaker 2: gets the lottery ticket and wins the lottery. but then
- 19:01Speaker 2: can't tell anybody because it would reveal that he... He
- 19:07Speaker 2: didn't screw over Marge. I mean, he kind of did,
- 19:10Speaker 2: but he had the right intentions. He wasn't being selfish
- 19:14Speaker 2: and going to Moe's or anything.
- 19:15Speaker 1: That's what I was thinking.
- 19:16Speaker 2: It wasn't so bad, but he was buying everyone gifts,
- 19:20Speaker 2: but he had to do it in secret. And then
- 19:22Speaker 2: Bart finds out the secret. And rather than go along
- 19:25Speaker 2: with the plan, he's just like, you know what?
- 19:27Speaker 1: Fuck this.
- 19:27Speaker 2: I'm just going to be honest to Marge. And I
- 19:28Speaker 2: was like, I think it was pretty decent for the
- 19:30Speaker 2: most part in this episode. So I just like the idea.
- 19:33Speaker 2: I think it was kind of... Because you can imagine
- 19:36Speaker 2: yourself being in a situation where I won the lottery.
- 19:39Speaker 2: But it's like, if you win the lottery, would you
- 19:40Speaker 2: want everyone to know you won it? Or would you
- 19:42Speaker 2: just like to spoil people and not have them know?
- 19:45Speaker 2: You tell your closest friends or your closest family, I think.
- 19:48Speaker 2: But would you want everyone in Geelong to know that
- 19:50Speaker 2: you've just become a multimillionaire?
- 19:52Speaker 1: Probably not. Nah, neither. I would spread the wealth a
- 19:55Speaker 1: little bit, but I wouldn't want people I didn't know
- 19:58Speaker 1: or even people I sort of knew on a very
- 20:01Speaker 1: flimsy basis saying, hey, I've got this great business opportunity.
- 20:04Speaker 1: It's like, I don't want to hear it.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Do you think if you won the lottery, I won
- 20:07Speaker 2: Tuts Lottery, we call it here, That you would start
- 20:10Speaker 2: eating at fancier restaurants? That you would start spending money
- 20:12Speaker 2: because you can?
- 20:15Speaker 1: No. I don't recommend that. No, I would not go
- 20:17Speaker 1: from zero to 60. I mean, I would not do
- 20:19Speaker 1: a 180 degree shift in terms of like, well, I'm
- 20:22Speaker 1: off to Costington.
- 20:24Speaker 2: I'd buy a nice house.
- 20:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:26Speaker 2: I'd fill it full of pinball machines.
- 20:27Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the thing. I mean, look, I still have
- 20:32Speaker 1: fantasies about it to this day. And what I would
- 20:33Speaker 1: do is, yeah, I would fix my house. Yeah, I'd
- 20:36Speaker 1: pay off my mortgage, fix my house. I would probably-
- 20:39Speaker 1: Upgrade the car, but not to like a Rolls Royce
- 20:42Speaker 1: or anything like that. I'd probably get a nice high-end Beamer.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Would you have like a library in your house?
- 20:46Speaker 1: Oh, sure. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But I think
- 20:49Speaker 1: the bulk of it I'd invest in just– you can
- 20:52Speaker 1: buy things or you can buy time to enjoy the things.
- 20:57Speaker 2: The beauty of winning a Tesla would mean that you
- 20:58Speaker 2: don't have to work. That's it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I
- 21:00Speaker 2: could pay someone to edit all these podcasts. Correct.
- 21:03Speaker 1: Yeah. So a million dollar maybe. Look, it's a great idea.
- 21:09Speaker 1: Does Bart in this, does he sort of like, he
- 21:11Speaker 1: manipulates dad.
- 21:12Speaker 2: He manipulates dad. He's like, if you don't let me,
- 21:14Speaker 2: if you don't buy me this or help me do this.
- 21:16Speaker 2: I think he goes to the Coldplay concert with him
- 21:17Speaker 2: and stuff like that.
- 21:18Speaker 1: That's right.
- 21:18Speaker 2: And he's like, and then Herman realizes, you know what,
- 21:20Speaker 2: screw this. I'm just going to be honest and tell Marge.
- 21:22Speaker 2: But the B plot in this one's a fun one.
- 21:23Speaker 2: It's where Lisa buys the Z for the retirement castle.
- 21:26Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, that's right.
- 21:27Speaker 2: And they all get a new lease on life and
- 21:28Speaker 2: they're fitter and they're happier. And then the nurses are like,
- 21:30Speaker 2: fuck this.
- 21:31Speaker 1: This is my work.
- 21:33Speaker 2: Somehow it ends up in the dishwasher. And I was like.
- 21:35Speaker 2: Probably accurate. So I have a fun little B-plot as well.
- 21:39Speaker 2: So a million dollar maybe was in my top five.

- 22:03Speaker 1: Let's talk about The Bob Next Door. That's one that
- 22:05Speaker 1: I've got. Yeah, yeah.
- 22:06Speaker 2: This was one of the better Bob ones I've had
- 22:08Speaker 2: for a few seasons.
- 22:09Speaker 1: I think so, yeah. I mean, I can take or
- 22:12Speaker 1: leave Sideshow Bob episodes. As I've said, I'm always a
- 22:14Speaker 1: fan of what Kelsey Grammer brings to the table. Always
- 22:17Speaker 1: a professional. Certainly when it gets to the recording booth,
- 22:20Speaker 1: if you can get him into the recording booth, as
- 22:22Speaker 1: we've discovered through some of our chats with the guys
- 22:25Speaker 1: at Simpsons Asia. Yeah, with Jay, who told some very
- 22:29Speaker 1: interesting on-the-record stories.
- 22:30Speaker 2: David... David Silverman as well? Not David Silverman.
- 22:34Speaker 1: No, no.
- 22:34Speaker 2: Who was the creators of the show? You had Matt Groening,
- 22:38Speaker 2: James L. Brooks, and Sam Simon. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 22:41Speaker 2: He's always angry. You see the way he looked at me?
- 22:45Speaker 2: He was just saying hello. He was just saying good morning.
- 22:47Speaker 2: Come on, Sam.
- 22:48Speaker 1: Yeah, but Kelsey Grammer apparently, yeah, could be a little
- 22:52Speaker 1: difficult getting out of his trailer. But once you did,
- 22:55Speaker 1: he was on. And he always is. And he is
- 22:57Speaker 1: in the Bob next door.
- 22:58Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, I mean- Very gruesome. Because the face-off parody.
- 23:01Speaker 2: It is, yeah.
- 23:02Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, as you were saying, this could have
- 23:05Speaker 1: been very much a- It would have fit in a
- 23:07Speaker 1: Treehouse of Horror episode. By the way, we'd better stipulate,
- 23:11Speaker 1: Treehouse of Horrors are generally not in the running. No, never.
- 23:13Speaker 1: They are always- We tend to view them as a
- 23:15Speaker 1: cut above.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Yeah, well, they're in their own sort of thing.
- 23:18Speaker 1: Yeah, and they would usually be like, number one for
- 23:20Speaker 1: the 13th year running is Treehouse of Horror. So we're
- 23:24Speaker 1: not mentioning that this time around, but yeah. This did
- 23:26Speaker 1: get a bit gruesome with its whole face on parodies
- 23:28Speaker 1: and faces peeling off. Reminded me of like the horror
- 23:31Speaker 1: movie Hellraiser at some stage as well. There's a lot
- 23:33Speaker 1: of missing skin in that one.
- 23:35Speaker 2: I remember my Uncle Darren, he was like the horror,
- 23:37Speaker 2: he's the horror guy. He got me into horror. Not
- 23:39Speaker 2: that I'm a huge horror fan now, but like he
- 23:41Speaker 2: had all the horror DVDs when people used to watch
- 23:43Speaker 2: DVDs and whatnot, but he would import them from America.
- 23:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:46Speaker 2: Like the multi-region DVD player and he couldn't get them
- 23:48Speaker 2: here in Australia.
- 23:48Speaker 1: Uncle Darren, what a guy.
- 23:49Speaker 2: I know, but he had the best of like, the
- 23:51Speaker 2: best of the horror villains like collection. When compilations were
- 23:55Speaker 2: a thing.
- 23:55Speaker 1: Sure. Right?
- 23:56Speaker 2: And I remember I had the clip. I'd never seen Hellraiser,
- 23:58Speaker 2: but Hellraiser was pulling the guy's skin off with chains.
- 24:00Speaker 2: And I was like, what the fuck is this?
- 24:02Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 24:05Speaker 2: Stretching his skin off and stuff.
- 24:06Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. It was great being a horror fan in
- 24:10Speaker 1: the 80s because you had Jason from Friday the 13th. Freddie.
- 24:15Speaker 1: Freddie from Nightmare on Elm Street. And they were kind
- 24:18Speaker 1: of like fun villains.
- 24:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:20Speaker 1: I mean, Freddy was always sort of cracking wires while
- 24:22Speaker 1: he was, you know, slashing you.
- 24:23Speaker 2: Michael Myers.
- 24:24Speaker 1: Yeah, and the Friday the 13th movie is a big
- 24:26Speaker 1: sort of big dumb fun. Yeah. It's like, you know,
- 24:28Speaker 1: you're not there for character development or anything like that.
- 24:30Speaker 1: You just want to see people.
- 24:31Speaker 2: Get chopped up. Yeah.
- 24:31Speaker 1: But they're not taking it too seriously. It's almost like,
- 24:35Speaker 1: it's like a ride on the ghost train. Then you
- 24:37Speaker 1: watch Hellraiser. That's a really weird, kinky, fucked up movie
- 24:41Speaker 1: in a lot of ways.
- 24:42Speaker 2: There's lots of them too.
- 24:43Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. And they're, with the exception of Hellraiser 2
- 24:48Speaker 1: colon Hellbound, The rest of them are absolute garbage. They're
- 24:51Speaker 1: no good.
- 24:52Speaker 2: You used that for many of the- Oh, sure.
- 24:54Speaker 1: Yeah, but the first one is very, very disturbing. And
- 24:58Speaker 1: I think I've talked in the past about that phenomenon
- 25:01Speaker 1: where you're like, God, you like movies? Bring a horror
- 25:03Speaker 1: movie to the party. Bring a scary movie. And occasionally
- 25:05Speaker 1: bring one that's like, yeah, this isn't what we meant.
- 25:11Speaker 1: We wanted like Michael Myers. We wanted scary.
- 25:15Speaker 2: Yeah. Terrifying.
- 25:17Speaker 1: We didn't want something that would, you know, capsize our soul.
- 25:23Speaker 1: But the science said bring a scary movie. And you
- 25:28Speaker 1: bring this and at the end, you know, that dude's
- 25:30Speaker 1: getting ripped apart by fishhooks. It's like, we'll tear your
- 25:32Speaker 1: soul apart.
- 25:33Speaker 2: I've always said, you know, that time on my birthday,
- 25:35Speaker 2: we went, mum took us to the video store. And
- 25:38Speaker 2: it was like, you know, a bunch of 14-year-olds. She's like,
- 25:40Speaker 2: hire whatever you want. Whatever you want, just not naughty movies.
- 25:44Speaker 2: Anything else, I'll let you hire it for tonight. And
- 25:46Speaker 2: it was Bloodsucking Freaks. Ay, ay, ay. Because it sounds
- 25:52Speaker 2: like a horror movie, which obviously it is, but on
- 25:53Speaker 2: the back cover, it's like, nude women?
- 25:57Speaker 1: Oh, we can sneak this one in as well.
- 25:59Speaker 2: I remember Chris, who ends up working at Pop Culture.
- 26:01Speaker 2: Shout out to Chris. He worked in the front office
- 26:03Speaker 2: of Pop Culture when we were there. He was working
- 26:06Speaker 2: at the video store at the time. I remember he
- 26:07Speaker 2: saw Bloodsucking Freaks, he looked at me, looked at mum,
- 26:09Speaker 2: and I'm like, she said we can have whatever he wants.
- 26:11Speaker 2: And he was like, all right.
- 26:16Speaker 1: He's probably looking at his co-worker.
- 26:18Speaker 2: Like, eh. All right. Have fun, kids. And I remember
- 26:22Speaker 2: just sitting in my bedroom watching this Bloodsucking Freaks and
- 26:24Speaker 2: we just get to a point where one of us
- 26:25Speaker 2: had to go, we're going to turn this off, right?
- 26:28Speaker 2: It's fucking weird. A little Ralfus coming out. Oh, Ralfus.
- 26:34Speaker 2: But yeah, I mean, I've... Told the story before about it.
- 26:37Speaker 2: That's a core memory for me, though, watching Bloodsucking Freaks
- 26:39Speaker 2: with my mates.
- 26:39Speaker 1: Sure, yeah. I've talked about getting this horror movie, The Burning,
- 26:43Speaker 1: for a video party. It's a horror movie. It's got
- 26:48Speaker 1: all the passing. It's like, okay, he's a masked killer
- 26:55Speaker 1: going through the woods, chopping up teenagers at this summer camp.
- 27:00Speaker 1: Early role for Jason Alexander.
- 27:03Speaker 2: Full head of hair. That's right, yeah.
- 27:05Speaker 1: But it just dials it up. Your average horror movie
- 27:09Speaker 1: is maybe at about a six or a seven. This
- 27:10Speaker 1: dials it up to like nine. It's like, normally you
- 27:13Speaker 1: see boobs and this has got boobs and bush. Or
- 27:20Speaker 1: normally it'll be a slash. It's like, oh, and it'll
- 27:23Speaker 1: stay on it for like two seconds.
- 27:25Speaker 2: Just enough.
- 27:26Speaker 1: And this stays on it for like five. Yeah. And
- 27:28Speaker 1: that's blood gushing out a bit more. There's one scene
- 27:30Speaker 1: at the very start. Sorry, we should be talking about
- 27:32Speaker 1: The Simpsons.
- 27:32Speaker 2: The following podcast can take spoilers for the burning. Yeah.
- 27:35Speaker 1: This is the very start. The Cropsey killer. His name
- 27:38Speaker 1: is Cropsey. He was set on fire during this prank.
- 27:43Speaker 2: He's always a legend. Yes, indeed.
- 27:45Speaker 1: And he's just horribly burnt all over. He's basically like
- 27:47Speaker 1: a human melted candle.
- 27:48Speaker 2: The Toxic Avenger.
- 27:49Speaker 1: Sort of, yeah. That's what he looks like. And he's
- 27:53Speaker 1: been in hospital for goodness knows how long. You hear
- 27:55Speaker 1: the voiceover, the skin graft just didn't take him. Sorry.
- 27:57Speaker 2: Ha, ha, ha.
- 28:00Speaker 1: He goes, he's released from the hospital. He's all clearly
- 28:02Speaker 1: all sort of cloaked up and everything like that. And
- 28:04Speaker 1: this hooker's like, hey, you want a good time? And
- 28:07Speaker 1: they go up to her room and she sort of sees,
- 28:09Speaker 1: you know, once he sort of takes his hat off
- 28:10Speaker 1: and she can see he looks like Cropsey.
- 28:12Speaker 2: She screams, yeah.
- 28:12Speaker 1: And she's like, oh, no, just get out.
- 28:15Speaker 2: Oh, no, no, no, no.
- 28:16Speaker 1: And she's just visibly disgusted. And he just grabs a
- 28:19Speaker 1: knife and starts stabbing her. It's like, oh, man, I
- 28:23Speaker 1: chose poorly. Because everyone's looking at me like... So you're
- 28:26Speaker 1: like horror movies guy.
- 28:29Speaker 2: Oh, so they didn't ask for a horror movie.
- 28:31Speaker 1: No, they did.
- 28:32Speaker 2: Oh yeah.
- 28:33Speaker 1: But I think they were thinking, I'll bring back like
- 28:35Speaker 1: a Friday, Halloween or something.
- 28:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:39Speaker 2: Absolutely. No basket case. Yeah.
- 28:41Speaker 1: And here's the thing. You look in the credits produced
- 28:45Speaker 1: by Harvey and Bob Weinstein.
- 28:47Speaker 2: It really was.
- 28:48Speaker 1: Oh no. Uh, What were we talking about? Horror movies?
- 28:52Speaker 1: Was it Million Dollar Maybe? No, no, no. No, we
- 28:54Speaker 1: moved on to The Bob Next Door. Oh, Bob Next Door. Yeah, yeah. Oh,
- 28:57Speaker 1: we were talking about Hellraiser faces.
- 28:58Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And it had a good twist
- 29:00Speaker 2: in it as well. I like the best sides of
- 29:01Speaker 2: Bob ones have a bit of a twist in them.
- 29:03Speaker 1: They do, yeah. And play on messages and all this
- 29:07Speaker 1: kind of stuff.
- 29:08Speaker 2: I don't think watching this for the first time I
- 29:09Speaker 2: would have seen that coming, the twist. No. Because they
- 29:12Speaker 2: do enough where you go, well, he sounds like Bob
- 29:14Speaker 2: and he's acting like Bob, but Bob's in the cell.
- 29:17Speaker 1: That's right.
- 29:17Speaker 2: Yeah, but it's not him. Yeah.
- 29:18Speaker 1: Yeah. And the whole bit at the end with the
- 29:20Speaker 1: five corners and all that, which turned out to not
- 29:23Speaker 1: exist or whatever. Now, of course, there were bits in
- 29:26Speaker 1: it that didn't really work out. The whole thing with
- 29:27Speaker 1: the waitress.
- 29:29Speaker 2: Yeah, and the family going to Mexico.
- 29:30Speaker 1: Oh, and the family going to Mexico. Yeah, well, that
- 29:32Speaker 1: sucked as well.
- 29:33Speaker 2: But there's some good Bob stuff in there. My next
- 29:37Speaker 2: one is going to be Homer the Whopper, which was the...
- 29:40Speaker 2: premiere of season 21.
- 29:41Speaker 1: Correct, yeah. I put this as one for you.
- 29:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I just thought it was a fun sort of
- 29:46Speaker 2: comic book based story. It was written by Seth Rogen
- 29:48Speaker 2: and Evan Goldberg.
- 29:49Speaker 1: Goldberg, yes.
- 29:50Speaker 2: Yeah, where Homer becomes the everyman, the superhero in the movie.
- 29:54Speaker 2: Perfect for the role. I like it when Homer gets
- 29:55Speaker 2: a gig that he's actually really good at and he
- 29:57Speaker 2: doesn't fuck it up because he's just a moron. What
- 30:00Speaker 2: happens here is Seth Rogen's playing his personal trainer, which
- 30:03Speaker 2: is how many movie stars get into shape is their
- 30:05Speaker 2: whole life is designed to, you know, they're eating specific things,
- 30:08Speaker 2: exercising by a routine. And once that train is no
- 30:11Speaker 2: longer with them, it's like, it's up to them, right?
- 30:13Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 30:13Speaker 2: Well, Homer here, he's very much like us. It's like, well,
- 30:15Speaker 2: we don't have someone by our side to say, don't
- 30:17Speaker 2: do that. It's like, what's one going to hurt? What's
- 30:19Speaker 2: one block of cheese? And then he ends up overeating
- 30:21Speaker 2: and he ruins the movie as a result. But I
- 30:23Speaker 2: thought Homer was very relatable here. I liked it when
- 30:25Speaker 2: he's good at a role. And I really enjoyed it.
- 30:28Speaker 2: I thought it was very funny. And yeah. It was. Yeah.
- 30:30Speaker 1: I mean, that whole, yeah, the whole thing about superheroes
- 30:34Speaker 1: having to bulk up as well. I mean, I think
- 30:37Speaker 1: it seems like a relatively new phenomenon. I mean- I
- 30:40Speaker 1: think you have to get in some degree of shape. But,
- 30:43Speaker 1: you know, you didn't see Michael Keaton getting completely jacked.
- 30:46Speaker 2: He wasn't jacked.
- 30:47Speaker 1: No, no. I mean, the suit was doing a lot
- 30:48Speaker 1: of the work there. I mean, I think Christopher Reeve,
- 30:50Speaker 1: when he was first hired as Superman, he definitely hit
- 30:53Speaker 1: the gym and all that. But not to the extent,
- 30:56Speaker 1: let's say, your Chris's have for their various Marvel roles.
- 31:00Speaker 2: And let's be honest, Star-Lord doesn't need to be in shape, really.
- 31:04Speaker 1: Four, yes.
- 31:05Speaker 2: Four, absolutely.
- 31:06Speaker 1: Captain America, I would say so. Because, yeah, that first
- 31:09Speaker 1: reveal of him, like, Well, he was a little wimpy
- 31:11Speaker 1: guy and now he's just like built. It's like, yeah,
- 31:14Speaker 1: you need that. Maybe not Star-Lord, but I get the
- 31:18Speaker 1: feeling it was partly really good brand management on Chris
- 31:21Speaker 1: Pratt's part and also really good advertisement for the movie.
- 31:24Speaker 1: It's like, hey, remember that funny fat guy you like
- 31:27Speaker 1: from Parks and Rec? Check him out now. He's doing
- 31:28Speaker 1: it for this movie. What?
- 31:30Speaker 2: What is it with X-Men 2 of Hugh Jackman in 2000?
- 31:32Speaker 2: It was like men went for the claws, women went
- 31:34Speaker 2: for the pecs.
- 31:36Speaker 1: But even then, you look at Hugh and the- In
- 31:40Speaker 1: the first X-Men movies. And yeah, they've got him with
- 31:42Speaker 1: his shirt off. He's lean. He's lean. He's not even
- 31:45Speaker 1: that super defined. I mean, yeah.
- 31:47Speaker 2: Yeah, true.
- 31:47Speaker 1: Yeah, but then cut to 15 or so years later
- 31:50Speaker 1: where he's in The Wolverine. Yeah. And yeah, it's like
- 31:53Speaker 1: veins are popping out.
- 31:54Speaker 2: But that was also CGI, AI'd a lot of it too.
- 31:57Speaker 1: I think so.
- 31:58Speaker 2: Have you seen the clip that's been doing the rounds
- 31:59Speaker 2: on Twitter of, there was a scene where, what's it,
- 32:03Speaker 2: a katana? Is that the sword that Deadpool uses? go
- 32:05Speaker 2: straight through Wolverine because it's just been AI and they
- 32:08Speaker 2: didn't pick up on it. Oh, no. Yeah.
- 32:11Speaker 1: Well, there's a great interview with Henry Cavill, who was Superman,
- 32:14Speaker 1: of course, on, I think it was the Graham Norton show,
- 32:17Speaker 1: where they were talking about... Because he got his shirt
- 32:19Speaker 1: off a lot for when he was on that show,
- 32:20Speaker 1: The Witcher. Okay. And, yeah, Henry Cavill already in pretty
- 32:24Speaker 1: good shape, but he was like, yeah, but for these
- 32:26Speaker 1: particular scenes where, you know, you have to look really
- 32:28Speaker 1: sort of... Yeah, we have to look really well-defined and
- 32:31Speaker 1: really jacked.
- 32:32Speaker 2: They defined him?
- 32:33Speaker 1: No, no. He was talking about the... I imagine there's
- 32:36Speaker 1: some digital enhancement, but he was saying for this particular day,
- 32:40Speaker 1: you're allowed this much to eat and you drink this
- 32:42Speaker 1: much water. And by the day that they're actually filming it,
- 32:45Speaker 1: it's like you're allowed maybe a thimble full of water
- 32:48Speaker 1: because your skin is then completely close to your muscles
- 32:53Speaker 1: and you just look insane. Everyone's looking like, this sounds
- 32:58Speaker 1: like something you'd do at Guantanamo Bay to people. It
- 33:01Speaker 1: sounds like an absolute torture.
- 33:02Speaker 2: Then I bought a house.
- 33:04Speaker 1: Then I bought all the houses.
- 33:05Speaker 2: Then I bought a good ton of a bay.
- 33:09Speaker 1: I didn't have to hit up Guy Davis for money anymore. Yeah. Luckily,
- 33:15Speaker 1: Hemsworth is the smartest one out there because he's turned
- 33:17Speaker 1: it all into a brandy thing. He's created his own
- 33:19Speaker 1: sort of fitness brand as well. It's like, well, it
- 33:22Speaker 1: gives me incentive to stay in shape. It also makes
- 33:24Speaker 1: me a little scratch.
- 33:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:26Speaker 1: Home of the Whopper. Yeah. And- Yeah, look, a pretty
- 33:29Speaker 1: good guest performance by Rogan as well.
- 33:32Speaker 2: Yeah, but what was your next one?
- 33:34Speaker 1: I want to talk about Bart Gets a Z. Okay.
- 33:36Speaker 1: Or a Zed.
- 33:37Speaker 2: Where he makes Mrs. K go to sleep.
- 33:39Speaker 1: Yeah, so he spikes her drink.
- 33:42Speaker 2: Oh, sorry, not her. So she gets drunk.
- 33:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:45Speaker 2: Yeah, she gets fired. Yeah, because- They get the cool teacher, right?
- 33:49Speaker 1: Yes. I've forgotten who was voiced the cool teacher again.
- 33:51Speaker 2: It was Zachary someone, wasn't it? Yeah, I think it's-
- 33:54Speaker 2: That's the teacher's name.
- 33:54Speaker 1: It's Zachary Vaughn.
- 33:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:57Speaker 2: As opposed to Veronica Vaughan. Yeah, so they get this
- 34:01Speaker 2: new cool teacher. Yeah.
- 34:03Speaker 1: Zachary Vaughan, yes, the coolest name in town. And yeah,
- 34:06Speaker 1: he's one of these guys who's.
- 34:07Speaker 2: Friends him on Facebook. Is he friends him on Facebook?
- 34:09Speaker 2: Or he follows him or whatever? Yeah. He lets him
- 34:12Speaker 2: watch videos in class and.
- 34:14Speaker 1: Doing all the stuff that makes you popular with the students,
- 34:15Speaker 1: but makes you quite an ineffective teacher. I mean, I'm
- 34:19Speaker 1: sure there are educators in the history of education who
- 34:22Speaker 1: have been able to pull this off, who have been- hey,
- 34:26Speaker 1: if you need to talk to anyone, I'm your pal.
- 34:29Speaker 1: But they can also say, it's time for you to
- 34:31Speaker 1: learn something. Or they're clever enough that they're able to
- 34:34Speaker 1: fold actual lessons into the fun stuff that they're doing.
- 34:38Speaker 2: It's hard to find that balance of being a cool teacher,
- 34:41Speaker 2: but also being a teacher. Because if you're just cool
- 34:44Speaker 2: all the time, the kids won't go, they'll go, what
- 34:47Speaker 2: do you mean you're making us do work? We're not
- 34:48Speaker 2: respecting you, but you need to have that level of
- 34:50Speaker 2: respect where they go, Okay, you're a cool teacher. You
- 34:52Speaker 2: let us do this, but we're also going to do
- 34:53Speaker 2: our work now because you let us do this stuff.
- 34:56Speaker 1: Do you think that in any level of respect, there
- 34:59Speaker 1: is a tiny degree of fear? Yeah.
- 35:01Speaker 2: Well, we had a couple of teachers at school that
- 35:03Speaker 2: we just, he let us do whatever we wanted basically
- 35:05Speaker 2: in class. He'd be like, you want to go outside
- 35:07Speaker 2: and kick the football?
- 35:08Speaker 1: That's fine.
- 35:09Speaker 2: He goes, as long as you get that assignment on
- 35:11Speaker 2: my desk by Friday, I don't care what you do.
- 35:14Speaker 2: He goes, you can maximize your time now while you're here.
- 35:17Speaker 2: where it's quiet and get your work done, or you
- 35:19Speaker 2: can make it harder for yourself by having to cram
- 35:20Speaker 2: it in a home and go and play outside and
- 35:22Speaker 2: play in the footy. And what happens was- How old.
- 35:24Speaker 1: Were you at this stage?
- 35:25Speaker 2: We would have been year nine, I reckon. Okay, then.
- 35:27Speaker 2: And it got to a point where we would be
- 35:28Speaker 2: outside kicking the footy, and we sort of realised, I'd
- 35:32Speaker 2: rather not do homework. And it's almost like he's making
- 35:35Speaker 2: you realise yourself, oh, let's just go outside and do
- 35:37Speaker 2: the work. And you're like, oh, wait a minute. Rather
- 35:38Speaker 2: than say, you must stay here, he made us realise, oh, no,
- 35:42Speaker 2: it's better to be in here.
- 35:44Speaker 1: It's a gamble.
- 35:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 35:46Speaker 1: On his part. I mean, you're trusting that your students
- 35:48Speaker 1: are savvy enough to pick up on that. Because there
- 35:52Speaker 1: may be a fair few that sort of fall through
- 35:53Speaker 1: the cracks as a result. But no, I thought, I
- 35:57Speaker 1: thought Bart gets a, we're going to say a Z
- 35:59Speaker 1: or a Zed. Whatever. Well, yeah. Our American friends would
- 36:02Speaker 1: say Z.
- 36:03Speaker 2: Let's call it Z. I say Z. I don't say Zed.
- 36:06Speaker 1: I tend to say, hmm.
- 36:08Speaker 2: I was raised on Sesame Street. That's why. That's true.
- 36:11Speaker 2: But what'd you like about this one?
- 36:13Speaker 1: I like, yeah, I like the relationship. between Bart and Mrs. Kraboppel,
- 36:17Speaker 1: I think he sort of recognized, or he had to,
- 36:19Speaker 1: he got some understanding of like, oh, this is.
- 36:22Speaker 2: The importance of teaching. Yeah. Yeah.
- 36:23Speaker 1: Importance of education. And like, this is a tougher job
- 36:26Speaker 1: than it may have initially seemed to be. I like
- 36:28Speaker 1: the idea of deflating the idea of the cool teacher
- 36:32Speaker 1: a little bit, because there've been so many shows and
- 36:35Speaker 1: stories about, hey, yeah, we're all hanging out. And we had,
- 36:39Speaker 1: as I like to say, we had fun and we
- 36:40Speaker 1: learned a little something too. Mostly, you've just got to
- 36:42Speaker 1: learn a little something.
- 36:43Speaker 2: And the one who was trying to make them teachers,
- 36:45Speaker 2: he's like the bad guy, like the principal in Saved
- 36:47Speaker 2: by the Bell.
- 36:48Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 36:48Speaker 2: It's just like, no, no, he's doing the right thing.
- 36:51Speaker 1: He's doing his job. Yeah, that's what they are. And
- 36:54Speaker 1: the fact that, yeah, Zachary Vaughan sort of falls apart
- 36:57Speaker 1: the minute he has to exert some authority. Yeah. Yeah.
- 37:00Speaker 2: And I think this is where Mrs. Kelly starts her
- 37:02Speaker 2: own business as well, the bakery.
- 37:04Speaker 1: That's right.
- 37:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:06Speaker 1: Oh, that's, yeah, yeah.
- 37:06Speaker 2: She sort of has a. Even though she realizes that's, oh,
- 37:10Speaker 2: she thinks it's a dream, but it's not really her dream. Yeah,
- 37:12Speaker 2: so she goes, this was my dream. So she starts
- 37:13Speaker 2: it up and then realizes she's in debt. And then
- 37:15Speaker 2: she realizes that, because Bart comes clean. He goes, oh, well,
- 37:17Speaker 2: you started your dream now. I'll tell you what happened.
- 37:19Speaker 2: I actually got you drunk. And she gets really angry.
- 37:21Speaker 2: This is not my dream. My dream was teaching and
- 37:23Speaker 2: you ruined that for me. So then he gets, I
- 37:25Speaker 2: think Zachary Vaughn, he hears him over after I was drunk.
- 37:30Speaker 1: Bart doesn't.
- 37:30Speaker 2: I think he records him babbling out from the kids.
- 37:32Speaker 2: Sparks his energy drink. That's right. Yes. And then he
- 37:35Speaker 2: gets Mrs. K her job back.
- 37:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 37:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:37Speaker 1: And that's how it wraps up.
- 37:37Speaker 2: Anything that's Mrs. K base is A-OK with me.
- 37:39Speaker 1: That's how I was thinking that as well.

- 38:05Speaker 1: Tell me about it.
- 38:06Speaker 2: What's the one where Krusty marries Princess Penelope or he's
- 38:08Speaker 2: going to?
- 38:09Speaker 1: That's right, yes.
- 38:09Speaker 2: So this is, I thought it was a really good
- 38:11Speaker 2: use of a guest role with Anne Hathaway as Princess
- 38:13Speaker 2: Penelope because you're watching this and you're like, you would
- 38:15Speaker 2: not guess this was Anne Hathaway. I thought it was
- 38:18Speaker 2: a nice sweet story for Krusty because Krusty, we always
- 38:20Speaker 2: see him as selfish, bitter, a prick, right? And here,
- 38:25Speaker 2: for the first time in many years, we see him
- 38:26Speaker 2: be selfless and He's going to marry Princess Penelope. He's
- 38:29Speaker 2: in love. But then he realizes, if I let this...
- 38:32Speaker 2: If I marry this girl, I'm going to ruin her life.
- 38:34Speaker 2: Because I don't trust myself. So he doesn't marry her.
- 38:37Speaker 2: Then he goes to... Or she goes to Paris, I think.
- 38:39Speaker 2: And he arrives at the end and they... They fight
- 38:42Speaker 2: off together. But then the next episode, he's not married
- 38:44Speaker 2: to her or whatever.
- 38:45Speaker 1: So it's like.
- 38:46Speaker 2: Whatever.
- 38:47Speaker 1: Continuity and canon have gone right out the window.
- 38:49Speaker 2: But I just thought it was a nice, well-told, sweet story.
- 38:53Speaker 1: I get where you're coming from.
- 38:54Speaker 2: I remember you weren't a big fan.
- 38:55Speaker 1: I recall that... Well, yeah, I'm... I'm definitely team Hathaway.
- 38:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:00Speaker 1: Good year out, girl.
- 39:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:02Speaker 1: I just didn't think this made as good a use
- 39:05Speaker 1: of her as it could have. Yeah. I think as
- 39:08Speaker 1: you pointed out, yeah, she's like, wasn't sure this was
- 39:10Speaker 1: going to happen. It could have been anybody, really. I'm
- 39:13Speaker 1: trying to think about what her particular sort of skill
- 39:15Speaker 1: set is. I mean, I think she looks like the
- 39:18Speaker 1: girl next door who can be quite mischievous as well,
- 39:20Speaker 1: who's got hidden depths. And I don't mean mischievous in
- 39:22Speaker 1: like a saucy kind of way. I just mean like,
- 39:25Speaker 1: If I saw her, I'd be like, bad news. yes
- 39:29Speaker 1: but sign me up the kind of bad news that
- 39:30Speaker 1: you want to receive so yeah I just think like
- 39:36Speaker 1: you've got someone like this you know acclaimed charismatic performer
- 39:41Speaker 1: I just wish they were used a little more effectively
- 39:43Speaker 1: in this I don't think she would have I don't
- 39:46Speaker 1: think she would have phoned it in I think she's
- 39:47Speaker 1: the kind of person who does that I'm also curious
- 39:51Speaker 1: about what you just said about how, oh, I don't
- 39:54Speaker 1: trust myself and I'll ruin your life if I marry him.
- 39:56Speaker 1: That's the story of Once Upon a Time in Springfield.
- 39:58Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 39:59Speaker 1: It's kind of taking away a bit of agency from
- 40:01Speaker 1: Princess Penelope. She's really into it. And Christy says up front, look,
- 40:07Speaker 1: I'm not a good guy or whatever. Let her make
- 40:09Speaker 1: her own decisions. I mean, she may learn something from
- 40:10Speaker 1: it as well.
- 40:11Speaker 2: Yeah, true. It's the one where at the wedding, all
- 40:13Speaker 2: of his ex-wives are there.
- 40:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 40:15Speaker 2: And I think that's where he sees it and he goes, oh,
- 40:17Speaker 2: I'm this one will end up, it's like, eh, like
- 40:19Speaker 2: I said, maybe she is the one.
- 40:21Speaker 1: That's true. Yeah, she could be the one that changes
- 40:24Speaker 1: you and she learns something from you as a result.
- 40:26Speaker 1: Who knows?
- 40:27Speaker 2: Yeah. But yeah, Once Upon a Time in Springfield was
- 40:30Speaker 2: in mine as well. So what's your non-number one? What's
- 40:33Speaker 2: your last one?
- 40:34Speaker 1: Oh, well, I've got American History Excellent.
- 40:36Speaker 2: Okay, I thought you'd have one. Yeah.
- 40:37Speaker 1: I like a good prison story. Yes. And this sort
- 40:43Speaker 1: of borrows from a lot of them, doesn't it? Yeah.
- 40:45Speaker 1: It's got a bit of Shawshank in there.
- 40:46Speaker 2: Greenwild in there.
- 40:47Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 40:49Speaker 2: Look at the castle in there as well, I think.
- 40:51Speaker 1: Oh, the last castle?
- 40:52Speaker 2: The last castle, yeah, yeah.
- 40:53Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Don't mix up.
- 40:55Speaker 2: Not castle.
- 40:56Speaker 1: Not go to the pool room. Yeah, and also a
- 40:58Speaker 1: good story about how people you think are not going
- 41:02Speaker 1: to abuse power will inevitably do so. Power corrupts and
- 41:04Speaker 1: absolutely power corrupts, absolutely.
- 41:06Speaker 2: So this is the one where Burns goes to prison.
- 41:07Speaker 1: Burns goes to prison because he's... Is he stolen art
- 41:11Speaker 1: or is he.
- 41:11Speaker 2: Oh, that's right. Yeah, it's stolen art that belonged to
- 41:13Speaker 2: various museums, yeah.
- 41:14Speaker 1: That's right, yeah. And he's... I donated this much money
- 41:17Speaker 1: to this place. I remember thinking at the time, it's like,
- 41:22Speaker 1: he's wrong, but he's not entirely wrong. But yeah, so
- 41:26Speaker 1: he's sent to prison and.
- 41:28Speaker 2: And Smith is now in charge of the power plant.
- 41:29Speaker 1: And Smith in charge of the power plant. That's right.
- 41:30Speaker 2: And that was a story that didn't really focus enough on,
- 41:32Speaker 2: but that's an entire episode in itself.
- 41:34Speaker 1: I remember, yeah, when we were talking about this episode,
- 41:36Speaker 1: when we reviewed it, it's like, yeah, this- A.
- 41:38Speaker 2: Good example of this wasn't fleshed out enough.
- 41:41Speaker 1: Yeah. These two bits sort of slot together well enough. Yeah.
- 41:44Speaker 1: But if you took them apart and just had Burns
- 41:47Speaker 1: in prison and have him sort of become the power rugger,
- 41:49Speaker 1: but just by virtue of him being smart and cunning
- 41:52Speaker 1: and ruthless and all that kind of stuff, that could
- 41:53Speaker 1: be kind of interesting.
- 41:55Speaker 2: Burns with a do-rag on, just running the prison yard.
- 42:00Speaker 2: Who's Oz? What's his name play?
- 42:01Speaker 1: Schillinger? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, J.K. Simmons plays Schillinger, yeah.
- 42:05Speaker 1: One of the most evil. There's a lot of competition
- 42:09Speaker 1: for who's the most evil in Oz. But yeah, I
- 42:11Speaker 1: also have an episode where it's like, Oh, Mr. Burns
- 42:14Speaker 1: is incapacitated or just can't run the plant for a while.
- 42:19Speaker 1: Time for Smithers to step in. And everyone's like, oh, well,
- 42:22Speaker 1: this guy's just such a beta male and he's so subservient. And,
- 42:25Speaker 1: you know, oh, it'll be like, it's a free ride
- 42:27Speaker 1: for us. And no, no, he turns out to be
- 42:29Speaker 1: even worse. Both interesting.
- 42:32Speaker 2: The thing is, we thought in that episode there that
- 42:35Speaker 2: Smithers has been a great boss to them. And then
- 42:37Speaker 2: he goes to Mose and they're all just like, can
- 42:39Speaker 2: you believe that dickhead Smith has looked at his dudes?
- 42:41Speaker 2: And you're like, why are you being horrible to him?
- 42:44Speaker 2: He's the boss you want. You've won the game. And
- 42:48Speaker 2: then he becomes a prick after he hears that.
- 42:50Speaker 1: Correct.
- 42:50Speaker 2: All right. My number one, I think it's going to
- 42:51Speaker 2: be your number one.
- 42:52Speaker 1: Chief of Hearts.
- 42:53Speaker 2: Yes. Hey, we did it. Great episode. I just thought,
- 42:57Speaker 2: we don't often get Homer and Wiggum stories, but when
- 42:59Speaker 2: they do, they always just excel. Marge and the Lamb
- 43:03Speaker 2: is a good example. Yeah. When they're chasing Marge down.
- 43:07Speaker 2: With Ruth. But this one here, so Wiggum is a
- 43:08Speaker 2: character who we always see him as like this bumbling,
- 43:11Speaker 2: just doofus, right? They don't really get much substance to
- 43:14Speaker 2: his character. This is the first time in a while
- 43:16Speaker 2: we've had some substance to him.
- 43:17Speaker 1: Yeah. And I think, yeah, the main joke involving Wiggum
- 43:20Speaker 1: is he's a doofus and a goof, but he's in
- 43:23Speaker 1: a position of power and authority. Yeah. That's both funny
- 43:27Speaker 1: and horrifying.
- 43:28Speaker 2: Yeah. And he feels really bad for me. He's lonely.
- 43:30Speaker 2: People don't want to be friends with him because he's
- 43:32Speaker 2: a police officer. They feel like they can't be relaxed
- 43:34Speaker 2: around him. Oh, of course.
- 43:36Speaker 1: Yeah, which is... strikes me as a very valid concern
- 43:38Speaker 1: to have or a very valid feeling that someone might have.
- 43:41Speaker 1: It's like, yeah, how can I be friends with someone
- 43:43Speaker 1: when they're always afraid I'm going to bust them? Or,
- 43:45Speaker 1: you know, they're just afraid to be their true selves
- 43:47Speaker 1: around me because I might go, ah, ah, ah. So, yeah,
- 43:51Speaker 1: the fact that he is lonely and latches onto Homer, but, yeah,
- 43:57Speaker 1: finds a kindred spirit in Homer because they are very
- 43:58Speaker 1: similar in so many ways. I mean, yeah, looking at
- 44:02Speaker 1: Wiggum storylines or Wiggum bits and pieces throughout the whole
- 44:06Speaker 1: series of the show and looking at what Homer does
- 44:08Speaker 1: like yeah these two should.
- 44:09Speaker 2: Be besties you can also understand why Homer at certain
- 44:12Speaker 2: points was just getting sick of Wiggum because he was
- 44:14Speaker 2: smothering him because Wiggum's gone from having no friends to
- 44:16Speaker 2: oh my god this guy's my best mate yeah And
- 44:19Speaker 2: Homer's like, whoa, whoa, whoa, I need space.
- 44:21Speaker 1: Yeah. We've got to give this friendship room to breathe. Yes, yeah.
- 44:24Speaker 2: But then I think, I remember at some point they
- 44:26Speaker 2: end up in the boot of Fat Tony's car.
- 44:28Speaker 1: That's right.
- 44:29Speaker 2: And Wiggum, he's like, no, he basically gives Wiggum the
- 44:31Speaker 2: uplifting speech. You're Wiggum. You can do this. And he
- 44:33Speaker 2: helps him get out. Yeah.
- 44:35Speaker 1: They're in the boot together, captured by Fat Tony and
- 44:37Speaker 1: the gang. Wiggum says, oh, you have that much faith
- 44:40Speaker 1: in me? Homer says, faith is what you have in
- 44:42Speaker 1: things that don't exist. Your awesomeness is real. Imagine hearing that.
- 44:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:47Speaker 1: What a big up. Yeah, so that's... But that line alone,
- 44:51Speaker 1: you know, sort of gets the top spot.
- 44:53Speaker 2: But no, just a really... It felt fresh. It felt new.
- 44:56Speaker 2: It felt like nothing was stupid in that episode. I
- 44:58Speaker 2: just thought it could have been easily like a season
- 45:01Speaker 2: 12 episode. Yeah.
- 45:02Speaker 1: A really faithful and more importantly, sincere look at male friendship.
- 45:07Speaker 2: And the emotion at the end felt earned. Yes. A
- 45:09Speaker 2: lot of times it feels like I get to the
- 45:10Speaker 2: end and they're trying to have a big, sweet emotional ending.
- 45:13Speaker 1: And then undercut it. Yeah.
- 45:14Speaker 2: But this just felt earned.
- 45:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 45:16Speaker 2: So Chief of Hearts, our number one for season 21.
- 45:17Speaker 2: Number one.
- 45:18Speaker 1: Indeed.
- 45:18Speaker 2: Indeed. All right, guys. Well, I hope you enjoyed that
- 45:22Speaker 2: little run-through there of Season 21. A lot to look
- 45:24Speaker 2: forward to in Season 22 because it's your pal's Grindando.
- 45:26Speaker 1: Correct.
- 45:27Speaker 2: If you do enjoy the show, you can support us
- 45:29Speaker 2: on Patreon, of course, for early and ad-free access to
