- 0:01Speaker 1: Good morning everybody, and thanks for starting your day with
- 0:05Speaker 1: us and your work week. It is just about five
- 0:09Speaker 1: degrees right now in Barry. I am downstairs at the
- 0:14Speaker 1: Good Shepherd Warming Shelter, where the smell of coffee and
- 0:20Speaker 1: fresh breakfast is in the air, and there's a really,
- 0:24Speaker 1: really nice crowd here as well. We're gonna chat with
- 0:26Speaker 1: test Taylor here in just a minute. But here we go,
- 0:29Speaker 1: Monday morning, five days away from the Jake Paul Anthony
- 0:34Speaker 1: Joshua fight on Friday night.
- 0:36Speaker 2: A lot of people can be watching that. Friday night,
- 0:38Speaker 2: I am going to be.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Over at Montpillia Master Volkswagen because I'm told that Santa
- 0:45Speaker 1: Claus and Missus Klaus are going to be coming to town.
- 0:49Speaker 1: So yeah, it's gonna be a good time over there.
- 0:53Speaker 1: They're gonna have a lot of fun, and of course
- 0:55Speaker 1: the whole family is welcome. They do great things for
- 0:58Speaker 1: our community, and everything is free. So Friday night, come on,
- 1:03Speaker 1: buy montpill your mousta in Volkswagen, San Claus.
- 1:06Speaker 2: And Missus Clause.
- 1:07Speaker 1: And yes, there's going to be cookie decorating and plenty
- 1:10Speaker 1: of sugar for everybody, all right, So it's going to
- 1:12Speaker 1: be a good time on Friday night. This afternoon at
- 1:16Speaker 1: three o'clock, rick Yarish from Sweethearts and Heroes is going
- 1:20Speaker 1: to be over at Cody's Chevrolet. They'll be signing his book,
- 1:24Speaker 1: a Bridge named Amos, and I'm gonna chat with my
- 1:27Speaker 1: good buddy and hopefully get over there and do some
- 1:31Speaker 1: live stream in this afternoon three o'clock at cody Chevrolet.
- 1:36Speaker 1: I am surrounded by some amazing people here at the
- 1:41Speaker 1: Good Shepherd Warm and Shelter. As I said, I wanted
- 1:48Speaker 1: to kind of start out this week appropriately enough with
- 1:53Speaker 1: a reminder that, yeah, it's really cold, and I don't
- 2:00Speaker 1: think really many of us need a reminder of that.
- 2:04Speaker 1: I think we kind of know that it's pretty rough
- 2:10Speaker 1: going living up here in the North Country, no matter where.
- 2:16Speaker 2: We are, but trying to.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Imagine being unhoused, not having a home is something that,
- 2:28Speaker 1: quite frankly, for me is and for many of us,
- 2:35Speaker 1: is unfathomable.
- 2:37Speaker 2: And we are so blessed to have in our.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Community several warming shelters here in central Vermont.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Test Taylor was on with me last week.
- 2:49Speaker 1: We were talking about not only the Good Shepherd here,
- 2:52Speaker 1: but also the great things they're doing over in a
- 2:54Speaker 1: month pilier as well. And this is the one thing
- 2:59Speaker 1: that you can say about our church communities is man
- 3:08Speaker 1: when it comes to folks that are less fortunate, they
- 3:13Speaker 1: really pull some weight and do everything and everything, everything
- 3:20Speaker 1: and anything that they can for people that.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Are going through a tough period.
- 3:28Speaker 1: We have talked so much over the years about homelessness,
- 3:34Speaker 1: We've talked so much about housing. We've talked so much
- 3:39Speaker 1: about folks that are needy.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Who are going through rough times in their lives.
- 3:48Speaker 1: And one thing that is probably the biggest takeaway from
- 3:52Speaker 1: that is that we're loved by our community. We're supported
- 3:57Speaker 1: by the community, but we also as individuals each have
- 4:02Speaker 1: our own unique story surrounding our situation. But one of
- 4:12Speaker 1: the things and tests is right next to me here.
- 4:14Speaker 3: Tests.
- 4:15Speaker 1: One of the things that you and I both said
- 4:19Speaker 1: good morning. One of the things, I'm gonna just clip
- 4:22Speaker 1: this onto you so that we can hear you, so
- 4:24Speaker 1: that we can hear you well. One of the one
- 4:27Speaker 1: of the big things that you and I were talking
- 4:30Speaker 1: about last week when I had Johnny. I can't even
- 4:32Speaker 1: remember what day that was, It's a Friday morning, okay,
- 4:37Speaker 1: was that.
- 4:39Speaker 2: No one.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Should suffer in the cold and certainly, there's just no
- 4:49Speaker 1: excuse for anyone perishing in the cold, which we had
- 4:56Speaker 1: that happen last week here right here in Barry, which
- 5:01Speaker 1: really rattled a lot of us. I'm sure it rattled
- 5:08Speaker 1: members of your church.
- 5:10Speaker 4: Here at the Good Shepherd, absolutely.
- 5:13Speaker 2: And you knew this. You knew this gentleman.
- 5:15Speaker 4: He was a fellow that would come in here from
- 5:17Speaker 4: time to time. Yeah, Rick, we called him Camp Quiet.
- 5:22Speaker 4: He was in here Monday morning that morning, Okay, so
- 5:28Speaker 4: everybody got announced that there was a shelter going on.
- 5:32Speaker 4: So wow.
- 5:36Speaker 1: We I think mostly what we could and should do
- 5:49Speaker 1: is offer prayers to Rick's family and his friend, all
- 5:57Speaker 1: of his friends, many of which uh are here today, and.
- 6:02Speaker 2: He was, he was well known.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Just offer your prayers first and foremost before anything else.
- 6:13Speaker 2: If there's anything that you can do, thank you you
- 6:21Speaker 2: as well.
- 6:22Speaker 4: Derek is saying goodbye. And Derek is our eggs slinger.
- 6:25Speaker 4: He's our egg slinger. He's been making eggs for everybody
- 6:29Speaker 4: here today.
- 6:33Speaker 2: What did you say, potatoes, Cooper? If you don't like
- 6:39Speaker 2: to the boss, God bless you man.
- 6:43Speaker 4: Next week.
- 6:45Speaker 1: You were just telling me about this guy, uh, just
- 6:48Speaker 1: before we went live here this morning, about Derek.
- 6:50Speaker 2: He's so, he's an incredible guy.
- 6:53Speaker 4: He's been a member. I think he's been a member
- 6:55Speaker 4: of this church, which he was a kid.
- 6:59Speaker 5: What you do.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Sounds like a lot.
- 7:01Speaker 4: Well, I think Derek is I don't know. Is Derek
- 7:04Speaker 4: working earl y Yeah, yeah, I don't know. He's he's
- 7:11Speaker 4: been he has respiratory issues. I have a feeling he
- 7:14Speaker 4: hasn't been working for a while. But but he comes
- 7:16Speaker 4: down here in volunteers on Mondays, which is great, and
- 7:19Speaker 4: he's a jolly guy.
- 7:20Speaker 1: So Mondays that's the day of the week when you
- 7:24Speaker 1: guys serve breakfast.
- 7:25Speaker 4: Yeah, it was Joe's idea. Joe Muller here, Thank you
- 7:30Speaker 4: so much.
- 7:32Speaker 2: It's amazing.
- 7:33Speaker 4: I mean, yeah, everybody just figured. You know, there's a
- 7:37Speaker 4: lot of feeding programs during the week, and actually now
- 7:41Speaker 4: the Congregational Church does a breakfast on Saturday morning, and
- 7:46Speaker 4: but you know in the on the weekends, it can
- 7:48Speaker 4: be kind of slim pickings for food and opportunities to eat,
- 7:54Speaker 4: so we always make sure we have this good hearty
- 7:56Speaker 4: breakfast on Monday morning. Start your week off right.
- 8:01Speaker 2: So this shelter is open seven days.
- 8:06Speaker 4: A week, five Monday through Friday through Friday from seven
- 8:12Speaker 4: to ten. And then the Congregational Church two doors over
- 8:15Speaker 4: on the other side of People's Health and Wellness, they're
- 8:18Speaker 4: open from eight to nine thirty on Saturday morning, which
- 8:21Speaker 4: is great because it does give a weekend opportunity and
- 8:25Speaker 4: they load people up with food there.
- 8:28Speaker 1: What has what's the demand been like? I think it's
- 8:33Speaker 1: no surprise. We all know that this has been one
- 8:36Speaker 1: of the coldest Decembers on record for a very very
- 8:41Speaker 1: long time. I've heard since two thousand and four. I've
- 8:44Speaker 1: heard since two thousand and seven. It doesn't matter. What
- 8:48Speaker 1: matters is that it has been an exceptionally cold December.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Has there been a lot of people in here?
- 8:58Speaker 4: I'd say we average fifteen to twenty a day, and
- 9:02Speaker 4: and that's a lot. That's a lot of people. And
- 9:04Speaker 4: you know, we're glad, they're glad they find us, and
- 9:06Speaker 4: we're glad they're here. And right now there's a lull,
- 9:09Speaker 4: but you've heard some busyness before, might pick up again,
- 9:13Speaker 4: and yeah, it's just.
- 9:17Speaker 1: You meant you mentioned the Congregational Church, Uh, the Presbyterian
- 9:22Speaker 1: Church as.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Well, the Heading Church.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Peggy and Peggy, you're the pastor there no a member
- 9:30Speaker 1: of the church.
- 9:31Speaker 6: Okay, So I mean, look at the connection here in
- 9:36Speaker 6: our community with with these churches all coming together of
- 9:40Speaker 6: working together to push and pull and.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Do whatever it takes.
- 9:44Speaker 4: But this has been kind of many years in the works.
- 9:48Speaker 4: With used to be that the churches took a day
- 9:52Speaker 4: and so people would knew that, you know, Monday is
- 9:56Speaker 4: Church of the Good Shepherd. Tuesday was you know, maybe congregation.
- 10:00Speaker 4: I don't even remember what the what the things, but
- 10:03Speaker 4: they knew that each morning they had a place to
- 10:05Speaker 4: go for breakfast. And then the pandemic hit and that
- 10:09Speaker 4: was the worst that was. I mean for so many reasons.
- 10:12Speaker 4: But there there yet is another one right that that
- 10:16Speaker 4: we couldn't do that. But so that's when we worked
- 10:19Speaker 4: with Pastor Dan too, and so we were all providing
- 10:23Speaker 4: meals for the breakfast, hot breakfast meals to be delivered
- 10:28Speaker 4: to enough ministries into their pantry in the back and
- 10:35Speaker 4: and people would you know, could help themselves. And uh,
- 10:38Speaker 4: that was it was tough for me because I wondered
- 10:41Speaker 4: and worried about people that you know, I was able
- 10:44Speaker 4: to you know, we were always able to get an
- 10:45Speaker 4: eyeball on to make sure, you know, they're okay and
- 10:48Speaker 4: you know, just did they need anything. And then that
- 10:51Speaker 4: that period of time was just awful, and then it
- 10:55Speaker 4: was it was hard to get the momentum back up.
- 11:00Speaker 4: So so when I was hired by the city to
- 11:05Speaker 4: be the Homelessessant Housing Liaison and this is just a
- 11:08Speaker 4: h a temporary job. Actually we got it extended to
- 11:12Speaker 4: into next year. But you know, so when we created that,
- 11:21Speaker 4: you know, I knew I had already had this experience
- 11:24Speaker 4: of the church was all working together, and plus I,
- 11:28Speaker 4: you know, know a lot of the people and all
- 11:29Speaker 4: the agencies of of help, you know, Capstone, Washington County,
- 11:34Speaker 4: Mental Health, People's health and wellness, just the whole gamut.
- 11:37Speaker 4: And and so I started putting together. We call it
- 11:41Speaker 4: the Summit Lunches, and we have about every other month
- 11:46Speaker 4: and we do it at the library. So this is
- 11:49Speaker 4: a collaboration between me, Kristin Bauman at the library, and
- 11:53Speaker 4: Brooke Poliot from Burry City Police. I know, so many ways,
- 12:02Speaker 4: and so the three of us decided that now I'm
- 12:06Speaker 4: trying to remember what it was, so this has been
- 12:07Speaker 4: a couple of years. So we had a homelessness task
- 12:14Speaker 4: for us that you know, sits with the city, you know,
- 12:17Speaker 4: is appointed by the city council and that was kind
- 12:21Speaker 4: of you know that all those members were leaving and
- 12:26Speaker 4: it needed to be refreshed, and and we knew we
- 12:30Speaker 4: needed a warming shelter because the library had been doing
- 12:35Speaker 4: it in the library, so you know enough, you know,
- 12:38Speaker 4: we do this, yeah, and and rightfully so, I mean
- 12:44Speaker 4: they people go there during the day and you know,
- 12:49Speaker 4: and they and they have to pay staff and everything.
- 12:50Speaker 4: So there's and so there was that, and then you know,
- 12:55Speaker 4: how we're going to work together. So so we pulled
- 12:58Speaker 4: together this lunch and you know, and still to this day,
- 13:04Speaker 4: thirty to forty people show up. And it's members of
- 13:07Speaker 4: the churches and other members of the community as well
- 13:09Speaker 4: that are interested in this, and the service organizations the
- 13:13Speaker 4: service providers. So the service providers can give a lot
- 13:17Speaker 4: of information about statistics or this or that or things
- 13:21Speaker 4: that are happening, and then the people the churches can say,
- 13:24Speaker 4: this is what we're doing. And now it's just working
- 13:27Speaker 4: so nicely together and the numbers that attend are still up.
- 13:34Speaker 4: And one of the things we started doing, I don't
- 13:36Speaker 4: know about about six months ago is so it's a
- 13:39Speaker 4: lunch from twelve to whenever. Usually it's like close into
- 13:43Speaker 4: one thirty. And I started doing this thing where from
- 13:48Speaker 4: eleven to twelve come in and see this. You know,
- 13:53Speaker 4: a workshop webinar type of thing that we have access
- 13:58Speaker 4: to where it talks about an aspect of homelessness. And
- 14:06Speaker 4: you know, so it's anything from uh, de escalation of
- 14:12Speaker 4: violent behavior or you know, escalated behavior, uh, to you know,
- 14:18Speaker 4: just talking about homelessness. And we had one. I don't
- 14:21Speaker 4: know if you went to that one, Peggy, but it
- 14:23Speaker 4: was the one where it told us very clinically what
- 14:27Speaker 4: substance abuse is. It wasn't any kind of stories or anything.
- 14:33Speaker 4: It was just like, these are the different substances and
- 14:37Speaker 4: this is what they do to your body, and this
- 14:39Speaker 4: is why people like the way they do. And you know,
- 14:42Speaker 4: I had volunteers who had been here. You keep it
- 14:46Speaker 4: down there, but.
- 14:50Speaker 6: So so so the topics of these webinars kind of change.
- 14:56Speaker 4: They change, but they're pertinent to the work that we're doing.
- 14:59Speaker 4: And the last, the latest one I did, and I
- 15:03Speaker 4: think I want to show this again to like anybody
- 15:06Speaker 4: who wants to see it, but it was it's called
- 15:08Speaker 4: Jerks Jerks with Homes, and it was about how do
- 15:13Speaker 4: we deal with people who say things like we see
- 15:17Speaker 4: on Facebook or in social media or just you know,
- 15:23Speaker 4: people have their opinions about people and and just how
- 15:26Speaker 4: we you know, when you encounter people that say something
- 15:29Speaker 4: like what what can we tell them? And it was
- 15:33Speaker 4: it was really cool because it's done. Yeah, And and
- 15:37Speaker 4: it was really cool because the guy has a really
- 15:40Speaker 4: good sense of humor. It's these they are all these
- 15:43Speaker 4: series of webinars by a fellow, Ryan Dowd, who's been
- 15:47Speaker 4: running homeless and shelters for like decades and so he
- 15:51Speaker 4: but he has a really good way of just joyfully,
- 15:55Speaker 4: you know, imparting information and so he does.
- 15:59Speaker 2: All these webinars and it's so cool.
- 16:01Speaker 4: And we have access to them, so yeah.
- 16:04Speaker 3: So we share. Wow.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, when I when I walked through the
- 16:10Speaker 1: door here this morning, just it was such a relief
- 16:15Speaker 1: to feel the heat.
- 16:17Speaker 2: And right away the smell of coffee. I mean, it's
- 16:22Speaker 2: just just so nice.
- 16:24Speaker 4: It is nice.
- 16:24Speaker 1: I mean, you gotta you gotta a table here that's
- 16:27Speaker 1: basically set up like a like.
- 16:29Speaker 2: A buffet with all kinds of all kinds of food.
- 16:33Speaker 1: You got the English muffins here and the toasters going.
- 16:36Speaker 1: And ye, the fact that Derek and these guys in here,
- 16:40Speaker 1: and even pastor Earl yeah flipping eggs, Yeah.
- 16:45Speaker 4: Eggs and hash browns or home fries and sausage.
- 16:49Speaker 1: I would love to chat with Earl Cooper camp here
- 16:54Speaker 1: at some point.
- 16:55Speaker 2: He's been the pastor here for about thirteen.
- 16:58Speaker 1: Years or yeah, and clearly uh loves what he does
- 17:05Speaker 1: and loves this.
- 17:06Speaker 2: What a way to start the week here.
- 17:09Speaker 1: You've got information all over the walls here for folks
- 17:12Speaker 1: to get additional resources.
- 17:16Speaker 2: You know, I was this morning when I was driving.
- 17:21Speaker 1: In here, I was just just listening to the the
- 17:27Speaker 1: news of what's going on with Rob Reiner and his
- 17:34Speaker 1: wife and the allegations that that his son was involved.
- 17:38Speaker 1: I mean, that's all over the news. We got the
- 17:41Speaker 1: uh you know, just in my short drive here, We've
- 17:44Speaker 1: got the ambush in Syria. We've got Brown University shooting,
- 17:48Speaker 1: we've got the anti Semitic.
- 17:51Speaker 2: Attack in Sydney.
- 17:53Speaker 1: And I'm like, I'm driving here this morning, I'm thinking, wow, man,
- 17:57Speaker 1: it's like here we are on a Monday morning, and
- 17:59Speaker 1: what's stick place of the weekend is just like bad
- 18:02Speaker 1: news that's snacked a mile high. And I'm like, you
- 18:05Speaker 1: know what, I feel good news because of where I'm
- 18:11Speaker 1: heading this morning. I'm heading I'm heading to the Good
- 18:14Speaker 1: Shepherd Warming Shelter and I'm like, you know.
- 18:17Speaker 2: What, this is a good thing.
- 18:18Speaker 1: Yeah, this is a this is a great way to
- 18:21Speaker 1: to start the week.
- 18:22Speaker 2: And I'm honored to be here. And I hope I can.
- 18:25Speaker 2: I can come back.
- 18:27Speaker 1: But five degrees tests and you know, I don't know
- 18:31Speaker 1: about you, but I'm not that tough anymore, man.
- 18:36Speaker 4: I know. It's like I hear you. I mean, I
- 18:40Speaker 4: have a big dog and I have to walk him
- 18:41Speaker 4: every morning and we usually go up to the cow
- 18:43Speaker 4: pasture and every morning, and today I was like.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Do I have to do this?
- 18:51Speaker 4: But but you know it's I mean, it's I can
- 18:55Speaker 4: take it because these guys take a lot more.
- 18:59Speaker 2: But you know this is a they give you inspiration.
- 19:03Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean the thing is and all this stuff
- 19:05Speaker 4: you were talking about that can really drag you down,
- 19:08Speaker 4: that's happening all over the world. You know, doing a
- 19:12Speaker 4: little bit of help in your community is the answer.
- 19:17Speaker 4: First of all. It's the answer.
- 19:18Speaker 2: That's what I was trying to say, and you just
- 19:20Speaker 2: said it.
- 19:21Speaker 4: Yeah, And just being kind to each other and you know, not.
- 19:29Speaker 2: Get caught up and not caught up and stuff. You know,
- 19:32Speaker 2: there's plenty of bad news. Yeah, so I.
- 19:35Speaker 1: Mean, you know, here's here's you know, we're starting out
- 19:40Speaker 1: with good news. The bad news is it's five degrees
- 19:43Speaker 1: right now.
- 19:44Speaker 4: The news is going up.
- 19:45Speaker 2: The good news that's going up.
- 19:47Speaker 1: The bad news is that the cold temperatures are coming
- 19:49Speaker 1: back Christmas week. But the good news is is that
- 19:53Speaker 1: the Good Shepherd is here.
- 19:55Speaker 4: Yeah, and and all of the churches, Yeah, it's it's
- 19:59Speaker 4: just quite amazing.
- 20:02Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 20:03Speaker 1: And and they involve the community as well getting over there.
- 20:08Speaker 4: And they have a new pastor who has done a
- 20:10Speaker 4: lot of this work, and so we're excited that he's here.
- 20:14Speaker 4: You'll probably meeting him to drop.
- 20:16Speaker 2: His name, drop his name, Dwight McCormick.
- 20:20Speaker 4: Dwight McCormick.
- 20:21Speaker 2: I forget.
- 20:22Speaker 3: He just texted me he's new.
- 20:24Speaker 7: So let's find out why he gets his car inspected?
- 20:26Speaker 2: John John doesn't.
- 20:28Speaker 4: No, John sends him out yips. I'm doing a commercial
- 20:33Speaker 4: for yipes now. I want to discount on those T shirts.
- 20:46Speaker 4: Yes they have they have a whole car garage there,
- 20:49Speaker 4: don't they.
- 20:49Speaker 2: J He did.
- 20:54Speaker 4: They get sent over there?
- 20:58Speaker 1: If you're just joining us this morning, we're downstairs at
- 21:04Speaker 1: the Good Shepherd Church right here, the Episcopal Church right
- 21:10Speaker 1: here in Barry, right on the you know, right where
- 21:14Speaker 1: the road's all merged together here by Barry City Park.
- 21:17Speaker 1: This beautiful, beautiful granite Yeah.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Beautiful church. Earl Cooper Camp is the pastor.
- 21:26Speaker 1: He's sitting right across from us right now where we
- 21:28Speaker 1: won't put him on camera right now because he's enjoying
- 21:30Speaker 1: his breakfast. But maybe when he's done we can chat
- 21:33Speaker 1: with him as well. But look at this church family
- 21:38Speaker 1: and what they've done. And you know, you guys, don't
- 21:41Speaker 1: fool around. You are probably keeping a very careful eye, Joe,
- 21:47Speaker 1: I would imagine on the forecast and what's what's coming,
- 21:50Speaker 1: what's happening, whether you know, and as as if the
- 21:54Speaker 1: cold isn't bad enough, you know, you throw in a
- 21:56Speaker 1: couple of snowstorms as well. And like I was just
- 22:00Speaker 1: saying the tests earlier, this has been one of the
- 22:02Speaker 1: coldest Decembers on record in a long long time, yeah,
- 22:07Speaker 1: a long time. So and we're good morning. How are you? Yeah, Danielle.
- 22:19Speaker 2: Got a little talking here.
- 22:21Speaker 1: Wow you're doing okay?
- 22:25Speaker 2: But yeah, ye war.
- 22:31Speaker 1: It was like feel it, yeah, yeah, I Honestly, I can't.
- 22:39Speaker 2: I can't. I can't imagine being outside in the cold.
- 22:43Speaker 1: And I was, you know, like I was saying earlier,
- 22:46Speaker 1: I was at one point in my life, I was
- 22:48Speaker 1: a pretty tough kid. I mean I was in Scouts
- 22:51Speaker 1: and we did some window camping and stuff.
- 22:53Speaker 4: But yeah, right, man, it's.
- 22:54Speaker 1: Like, I just can't imagine doing that now, test I
- 22:58Speaker 1: really can't. The fact that you guys are here, You're
- 23:02Speaker 1: serving hot coffee and fresh food on a Monday is incredible.
- 23:09Speaker 1: What so until ten o'clock, So what what can folks
- 23:12Speaker 1: do here?
- 23:13Speaker 3: Can they? Can?
- 23:14Speaker 2: They?
- 23:15Speaker 3: A lot of.
- 23:15Speaker 4: People well things are open after ten, so you know,
- 23:19Speaker 4: so they disperse out. But a lot of people go
- 23:22Speaker 4: to the library.
- 23:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 23:23Speaker 4: So that's you know, that's why.
- 23:25Speaker 3: I mentioned to you.
- 23:26Speaker 4: You know, you want to you want to talk to
- 23:28Speaker 4: Kristin Bauman at some point.
- 23:30Speaker 1: And kind of she's been on the air with me
- 23:32Speaker 1: in the past, but it's been it's been a while.
- 23:36Speaker 1: It's it's been a long time. So I'm gonna reconnect
- 23:39Speaker 1: with her and get her Yeah.
- 23:41Speaker 4: Yeah, So yeah, so people go to the library, you know,
- 23:44Speaker 4: So I'm I go over to the library too, you know,
- 23:46Speaker 4: I try to pop in and just see, you know,
- 23:49Speaker 4: what's going on, and he's there and anything. But but
- 23:53Speaker 4: they're they're great there and everybody, everybody on that staff
- 23:56Speaker 4: of the library, they're just wonderful.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Listen, it's like, you know, no matter what, we don't
- 24:04Speaker 1: want to have a repeat of what's happened now. Yeah, yeah,
- 24:10Speaker 1: there's there's no there's no excuse for it. Uh we yeah,
- 24:17Speaker 1: you know, we all we all have to look out
- 24:19Speaker 1: for for one another and make sure that people know that.
- 24:24Speaker 2: A beautiful warm shelter like this is available.
- 24:29Speaker 4: Yeah. I can show you a picture of what what
- 24:34Speaker 4: what it looks like when it's set up for the
- 24:36Speaker 4: we we put it. I'll look for it while we're talking.
- 24:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:41Speaker 4: But okay, but you know it's something I didn't tell you.
- 24:50Speaker 4: I wanted to tell you when when we talked before.
- 24:52Speaker 4: And I just want to tell this little story about
- 24:56Speaker 4: Monday night into Tuesday morning. So there was a a
- 25:02Speaker 4: woman and she was not from town. She she came
- 25:05Speaker 4: in from Washington State and she I'm putting it together now,
- 25:13Speaker 4: I think she wanted to go to People's Health and
- 25:15Speaker 4: Wellness in the morning, so she figured she would park there.
- 25:21Speaker 4: But she parked there and by four am, she was
- 25:24Speaker 4: so cold she was she called nine one one and
- 25:29Speaker 4: she's like she called and she said, I thought I
- 25:31Speaker 4: could stay stick it out in my car, but I can't,
- 25:33Speaker 4: s I can't, And and they immediately dispatch called Earl.
- 25:40Speaker 4: Earl was on duty from midnight to seven at the
- 25:45Speaker 4: Congregational church where we had our warming shelters set up,
- 25:49Speaker 4: and dispatch called Earl and said, there's a woman in
- 25:52Speaker 4: a car right outside. Yeah, you're building, and come in,
- 25:55Speaker 4: you know, And and so he got her to come
- 25:57Speaker 4: in and you know, thought her out and then she
- 26:00Speaker 4: did go to People's Health and Wellness later that morning.
- 26:03Speaker 4: And it was just this story that you know, told
- 26:08Speaker 4: me that, well, everything's working. When we let you know,
- 26:12Speaker 4: our police and our dispatch know what, you know, what's happening,
- 26:16Speaker 4: they know where to And it's not the first time
- 26:19Speaker 4: we've had police bring somebody that they found to the shelter.
- 26:24Speaker 4: So I just want people that know that that it works.
- 26:29Speaker 4: When it works, every once in a while you're going
- 26:32Speaker 4: to have a tragedy. And I'm you know, and I'm
- 26:34Speaker 4: heartbroken by this, but you know the fact that the police,
- 26:39Speaker 4: the fire, you know, emergency people everybody knows where to
- 26:43Speaker 4: bring people when we have the shelter open, and where
- 26:46Speaker 4: to send them. And so I was so grateful I
- 26:50Speaker 4: got to meet her and and she was so grateful.
- 26:55Speaker 4: But she also is alive to talk about it today,
- 26:58Speaker 4: you know, and not harmed by you know, because she
- 27:03Speaker 4: got inside and time.
- 27:04Speaker 2: It's the key, you know.
- 27:05Speaker 1: We just we need to stay alive and get through
- 27:09Speaker 1: these these brutal months up here in the North Country
- 27:13Speaker 1: and make sure that all of us in the community,
- 27:19Speaker 1: the unhoused and and not, are spreading the word, the
- 27:23Speaker 1: good word of what's going on, where there's shelters, where
- 27:26Speaker 1: there's resources, where you can get help, even if it's
- 27:30Speaker 1: just for a couple of hours at a time here
- 27:32Speaker 1: and there. But we are so blessed to have not
- 27:36Speaker 1: only Good Shepherd, but so many of the other organizations
- 27:41Speaker 1: UH and and church church groups, enough ministries, the Heading Church,
- 27:46Speaker 1: the Presbyterian Church, the Congregational Church, and and.
- 27:51Speaker 2: That's just here in Berry in my pillier as well.
- 27:54Speaker 4: Yes, they're doing a phenomenal work. I work very closely
- 27:58Speaker 4: with Good Shepherd, with their their leadership and with their outreach.
- 28:05Speaker 4: Outreach is very important. We're in constant contact and all
- 28:08Speaker 4: through both of those nights that we were open, the
- 28:12Speaker 4: shelter was open, I was in constant contact with their outreach,
- 28:16Speaker 4: texting making sure you know, is this here? You seen
- 28:20Speaker 4: so and so you know, there's a lot of that.
- 28:23Speaker 4: So yeah, I just really want people to know that,
- 28:27Speaker 4: you know, it's you're here. It's good, we're all here.
- 28:30Speaker 4: We're all here, and and our police and emergency personnel
- 28:36Speaker 4: are publica stay on top of it, and they're they're
- 28:42Speaker 4: just great.
- 28:42Speaker 2: Yeah, there really are.
- 28:45Speaker 1: And you know, I always I always kind of uh
- 28:49Speaker 1: point the finger at Joe Waltsworth as being one of
- 28:52Speaker 1: the one of the heroes.
- 28:54Speaker 2: That we have. But there's really all of them. Are
- 28:58Speaker 2: they really are?
- 28:59Speaker 4: Yeah? Uh yeah, Joe and I stay in good contact too, lots.
- 29:04Speaker 4: It's really good.
- 29:05Speaker 2: So wow, my boss is here, Yeah, should be. Uh
- 29:09Speaker 2: you want to let.
- 29:09Speaker 4: Him in my chair. But first I'm going to say listen,
- 29:13Speaker 4: if you have any time to donate, if you have
- 29:18Speaker 4: any food to donate, if you are interested in participating
- 29:22Speaker 4: at all, and it's not free to run these things.
- 29:25Speaker 4: You can also donate money if you want to do
- 29:28Speaker 4: any of those things. Coffee, any coffee anything, uh, tea tailor,
- 29:33Speaker 4: at Burrycity dot org. Is my email? Okay, thank you.
- 29:39Speaker 2: I I have that, but I'm going to write it
- 29:41Speaker 2: down again. Te Taylor at Burycity dot org.
- 29:48Speaker 1: Okay, our city manager has just walked in here and
- 29:54Speaker 1: he's got a hot cuppa and Nicholas, thanks for coming on.
- 29:59Speaker 2: Man, I'm going to c but how are you doing?
- 30:02Speaker 2: What's what's happening?
- 30:05Speaker 1: Look at this amazing, uh resource that we have right
- 30:09Speaker 1: here in our community.
- 30:10Speaker 2: This was.
- 30:16Speaker 1: Really really heavy for our community to process what happened
- 30:21Speaker 1: last week. Richard was a man who frequented this particular
- 30:29Speaker 1: shelter as well. There's this kind of stuff just can't
- 30:40Speaker 1: happen in our community.
- 30:42Speaker 2: We understand homelessness, you understand it very well.
- 30:46Speaker 1: You're constantly constantly dealing with housing homelessness.
- 30:53Speaker 2: But for this to happen right here in.
- 30:55Speaker 1: The Granite City was was really profound.
- 31:00Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, it's just it brings it puts to
- 31:04Speaker 5: stark reality and what people are facing right now. You
- 31:06Speaker 5: know that these are literally life endangering conditions that that
- 31:12Speaker 5: people are having to survive, and and here we are
- 31:18Speaker 5: only at the beginning of the winter.
- 31:19Speaker 3: It's gonna only get worse. It's gonna only get worse.
- 31:22Speaker 5: And you know, I struggle, you know, mightily with with
- 31:27Speaker 5: what more we can do to you know, to ensure
- 31:29Speaker 5: this doesn't happen. Last year we had a difficult winter.
- 31:33Speaker 5: Luckily we didn't lose anyone here within very city. And
- 31:37Speaker 5: so yeah, this, this is this is all, you know,
- 31:39Speaker 5: very hard, especially the people who work here, who volunteer here,
- 31:43Speaker 5: who view Richard, the people who share coffee and breakfast
- 31:47Speaker 5: with him. So I don't know how they do it.
- 31:50Speaker 5: I don't know how they shame compartmentalize it, because here
- 31:56Speaker 5: they are again, you know, moving on and doing you know,
- 31:59Speaker 5: doing this. That's great work for the people who need
- 32:02Speaker 5: it every day.
- 32:02Speaker 1: Yeah, and this is one of several churches that we're
- 32:06Speaker 1: so lucky.
- 32:06Speaker 2: To have here in our community.
- 32:08Speaker 1: I mean, we've been given kudos this morning to enough ministries,
- 32:11Speaker 1: Danill Lynde and the Congregational Church, the Presbyterian Church Heading,
- 32:19Speaker 1: I mean, look at what they're doing over.
- 32:20Speaker 2: At Heading too. You know, it's tremendous.
- 32:22Speaker 5: The people who lead these churches, who worship at these churches,
- 32:26Speaker 5: they're the I'm convinced the best among us. They you know,
- 32:30Speaker 5: they are they do the things that so many of
- 32:32Speaker 5: us don't find the time to do, don't have the
- 32:34Speaker 5: heart to do, the empathy to do, the patience to do.
- 32:38Speaker 5: And so I think we are you know, not to get,
- 32:41Speaker 5: not to be plenty, but we're blessed.
- 32:43Speaker 3: We are blessed to have them h in our community
- 32:46Speaker 3: because this, you know, this wouldn't be happening.
- 32:50Speaker 1: We look at this, you walk in here this morning,
- 32:52Speaker 1: at the smell of coffee, the heats on, there's there's
- 32:55Speaker 1: food here, I mean even cook to order.
- 32:57Speaker 2: Breakfast on Mondays.
- 32:59Speaker 3: Yeah, that's amazing, it's great.
- 33:01Speaker 5: It's a it's a great way to show the people
- 33:04Speaker 5: who need the service that there are those who are
- 33:07Speaker 5: looking to take care of them, looking out for them,
- 33:09Speaker 5: care about them, have a coon, you know, willing to
- 33:12Speaker 5: have a conversation with them.
- 33:13Speaker 3: I mean, how many times, you know, we're all guilty
- 33:16Speaker 3: of it.
- 33:16Speaker 5: How many times do we cross path one of the
- 33:18Speaker 5: folks who's in here now on the sidewalk, look the
- 33:21Speaker 5: other way across the street because of the stigma, you know,
- 33:24Speaker 5: spending an hour here, well you go a long ways
- 33:28Speaker 5: to teaching you about, you know why, what's wrong with
- 33:31Speaker 5: those stigmas.
- 33:31Speaker 2: Frankly, it will destroy the.
- 33:33Speaker 3: Stigma yeah, I think I think so, I think so.
- 33:36Speaker 1: Yeah, if you got you know, you don't have to
- 33:39Speaker 1: be a member of the Good Shepherd Church.
- 33:41Speaker 2: I mean, if you've got any time or or any.
- 33:43Speaker 1: Resources to to share, come in here and chat with
- 33:47Speaker 1: Tests or Earl or anyone here.
- 33:49Speaker 2: Yeah, and make a donation.
- 33:50Speaker 3: Absolutely exactly. It's if that's all it is.
- 33:52Speaker 5: If you have if you have time to give, and
- 33:55Speaker 5: you know, have empathy and a heart, this is that's
- 33:58Speaker 5: that's all that's required to come in here and a difference.
- 34:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 34:01Speaker 2: I teach your kids this kind of stuff too, you know.
- 34:05Speaker 1: You know, I I was telling Tests, you know, there
- 34:11Speaker 1: was a day when I was probably tough enough to
- 34:14Speaker 1: last maybe two nights in temperatures like this, when I
- 34:20Speaker 1: was young.
- 34:23Speaker 2: And in Scouts with really good gear, right. I just
- 34:30Speaker 2: it's it's unfathomable to me, man, it really is.
- 34:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 34:33Speaker 5: And I know, you know from talking to Tests and
- 34:36Speaker 5: the folks who are providing the direct services. I know
- 34:38Speaker 5: there's people who are hard enough to do it. I
- 34:41Speaker 5: know because we know because they have been doing for
- 34:44Speaker 5: years now. Unfortunately, but they you know, they they're they're
- 34:50Speaker 5: they're the exception, not the role. Most of the people
- 34:53Speaker 5: who are happy to brave this are probably like me
- 34:55Speaker 5: and you who would be trying to figure it out.
- 34:57Speaker 3: As we go.
- 34:58Speaker 5: And you know, in days past, you know, people who
- 35:01Speaker 5: do this kind of stuff recreationally, they know they're going
- 35:04Speaker 5: to be on the woods for maybe a day or two.
- 35:05Speaker 3: You can sort of, I think, maybe pace yourself for that.
- 35:08Speaker 3: But if you're doing this day in day out, right,
- 35:10Speaker 3: it has to hole on the body. It must, It
- 35:13Speaker 3: just has to.
- 35:14Speaker 5: And so so yeah, you know, there's certainly people who
- 35:18Speaker 5: have the skills, but that's.
- 35:19Speaker 3: Not what we want to be relying on, right, That's
- 35:23Speaker 3: not a solution. You know.
- 35:26Speaker 2: I have chatted with.
- 35:29Speaker 1: Chad, an amazing guy Berlin Police Department, and you know,
- 35:35Speaker 1: one of the one of the things that he's explained
- 35:39Speaker 1: to me, as have others, is that some folks that
- 35:43Speaker 1: are unhoused, even when the temperatures are really extreme, they
- 35:51Speaker 1: may not necessarily welcome an opportunity to come in somewhere
- 35:57Speaker 1: warm and compressed because it's what they're familiar with. They
- 36:04Speaker 1: know where they are, and they're comfortable with what they're with,
- 36:09Speaker 1: with who they're around, and where they are because that's
- 36:11Speaker 1: what they know.
- 36:13Speaker 3: Yeah, and at some.
- 36:14Speaker 2: Point we gotta we gotta draw the line here.
- 36:17Speaker 5: Yeah, and I think there's we've learned about this and
- 36:20Speaker 5: other circumstances as well, where people don't like congregates shelter settings, right,
- 36:25Speaker 5: and so they you know, unless you're going to get
- 36:27Speaker 5: your room and your privacy in your space, they that
- 36:30Speaker 5: may not be something that people are willing to give up.
- 36:33Speaker 5: You know, they need that for whatever reason, maybe mental health,
- 36:36Speaker 5: whatever it is. They need that sort of separation from others.
- 36:40Speaker 5: And so yeah, there's you know, and I coming from
- 36:43Speaker 5: New York, I know, I think in New York it
- 36:45Speaker 5: was called code blues. I forget what exactly what is
- 36:48Speaker 5: code blue? So when the temperatures below a certain you know,
- 36:52Speaker 5: up level, there would be outreach teams that would go
- 36:57Speaker 5: and forcibly bring people to shelter.
- 37:00Speaker 3: I mean they would they wouldn't give you a choice. Yeah.
- 37:03Speaker 5: I understand that's not the law here, but I know
- 37:06Speaker 5: that in New York that was you know, when I
- 37:07Speaker 5: was there, and then you know, it was something I
- 37:10Speaker 5: remember hearing about, right that it was it's certain temperature
- 37:13Speaker 5: to code blue night and police and social workers and
- 37:17Speaker 5: outreach organizations and Department of Homeless Services are going out
- 37:20Speaker 5: and they're forcibly bringing people back in. Now, maybe that
- 37:25Speaker 5: works there, maybe it won't work, wouldn't work here, But
- 37:27Speaker 5: I agree with you this. You know, right now, we
- 37:30Speaker 5: offer a voluntary shelter where we let people know it
- 37:35Speaker 5: is available as a resource. We don't force anyone to
- 37:39Speaker 5: come in, and that's certainly up to the individuals.
- 37:41Speaker 3: We have some very low bear heer rules for coming
- 37:45Speaker 3: in here.
- 37:46Speaker 5: I'm not here, you know, at the shelter site, which
- 37:48Speaker 5: are very reasonable and intended not to keep anybody out
- 37:52Speaker 5: that really needs a place to be. But but yeah,
- 37:55Speaker 5: you're right, we can't make anyone come in from the elements.
- 37:59Speaker 5: That is something they have to be willing and able
- 38:01Speaker 5: to do on their own.
- 38:03Speaker 1: And that's where outreach comes in, because you know, we,
- 38:06Speaker 1: like we were testing I were saying earlier, you know,
- 38:09Speaker 1: we all have to rely on each other to spread
- 38:12Speaker 1: the word and make sure that we all are very
- 38:16Speaker 1: very aware of these these resources. There's so many of them.
- 38:21Speaker 1: But if you're not aware of it, you know, you're
- 38:24Speaker 1: risking your life.
- 38:25Speaker 5: Yeah, and Test has done a great job building this
- 38:27Speaker 5: network of providers and making sure that the word gets
- 38:30Speaker 5: you know, the word gets out at a place like this, right,
- 38:32Speaker 5: the people who are coming in here are a lot
- 38:34Speaker 5: of the same same people who are coming in to
- 38:37Speaker 5: the to the shelter.
- 38:39Speaker 3: Overnight shelter we have.
- 38:41Speaker 7: Was sitting right in that chair Monday morning.
- 38:44Speaker 3: Yeah, served in breakfast. Everybody knew that we're going.
- 38:47Speaker 5: To So that's you know, that's the best way to
- 38:51Speaker 5: reach them, right, Like, I'm not expecting all the folks
- 38:54Speaker 5: who need the shelter to be signed up on Regroup,
- 38:56Speaker 5: for example, but that's the way we reach people. The
- 38:57Speaker 5: way the reason I sent out the overnight shelters on
- 39:00Speaker 5: Regroup is because if.
- 39:01Speaker 3: Somebody sees somebody knows somebody.
- 39:05Speaker 5: That needs that, then they know right like where where
- 39:08Speaker 5: to send someone. You know, we we have the good
- 39:12Speaker 5: SAM outreach team that knows where a lot of these
- 39:14Speaker 5: people are set up camping to make sure.
- 39:16Speaker 3: That they know where it is. So it's it's a
- 39:19Speaker 3: lot of informal.
- 39:21Speaker 5: Word that gets out because it's not a community that is,
- 39:25Speaker 5: you know, plugged in all the time or watching the
- 39:27Speaker 5: news or downloading apps to get messages, right they are,
- 39:31Speaker 5: they're trusting people like Earl and Tests who they see
- 39:34Speaker 5: every day to get that information.
- 39:36Speaker 3: The authorities.
- 39:38Speaker 7: Yea last Monday morning. Okay, yeah, we went out. Woman
- 39:46Speaker 7: was freezing out.
- 39:48Speaker 2: The morning.
- 39:49Speaker 4: So if nothing else, because dispassion knows exactly what to
- 39:57Speaker 4: tell people.
- 39:58Speaker 7: What we call in at midnight when we're op and
- 40:01Speaker 7: overnight and give them the census and like how many,
- 40:05Speaker 7: how many guests we got, how many volunteers, just so
- 40:07Speaker 7: that they're aware of what's going on. And so I
- 40:10Speaker 7: called in midnight and then called they called.
- 40:14Speaker 3: Me right back and forth. There's someone else, right.
- 40:19Speaker 1: Pastors, just stuff, you know, yeah, exactly when it works,
- 40:26Speaker 1: it works, And tests said that earlier. Listen, Uh, we're
- 40:34Speaker 1: so blessed to have this, and I would like to make.
- 40:39Speaker 4: More of a.
- 40:41Speaker 1: Regular habit of coming here every now now and then,
- 40:45Speaker 1: especially when we get a snap like that. I haven't
- 40:49Speaker 1: had the the coffee or the breakfast yet. I got
- 40:52Speaker 1: my own coffee here, but at some point I'll put
- 40:55Speaker 1: my my order in for the uh, for the homemade
- 41:00Speaker 1: hash and eggs, Benedict.
- 41:03Speaker 5: It's a wonderful and I and I, you know, I
- 41:07Speaker 5: think it is important. I haven't been here as often
- 41:11Speaker 5: as I should be. I've I've been here once or twice,
- 41:15Speaker 5: but it is such a grounding experience and I think
- 41:18Speaker 5: for people who you know, if you're someone who's reticent, reluctant,
- 41:24Speaker 5: unsure of the community that we're talking about, it's really
- 41:28Speaker 5: important to come in here and just experience it because it's,
- 41:31Speaker 5: like we talked just a few seconds earlier, that it
- 41:34Speaker 5: really eliminates a lot of the stigma of the people
- 41:36Speaker 5: that that people feel or all.
- 41:38Speaker 1: Human beings at the end of the day, you know,
- 41:41Speaker 1: whether we were dealing with substance use or not.
- 41:47Speaker 3: Right.
- 41:48Speaker 1: You know, I've had a couple of people on aired
- 41:52Speaker 1: out over the last month or so, and uh Zac
- 42:03Speaker 1: Hughes is one of them who have have said to me,
- 42:08Speaker 1: you know, we're all one really bad day away.
- 42:13Speaker 3: From being homeless.
- 42:17Speaker 2: So much of.
- 42:19Speaker 1: What can happen is circumstantial, absolute, and it can happen
- 42:23Speaker 1: to single parents, families.
- 42:27Speaker 2: Things happen quickly, quickly complete, you know.
- 42:32Speaker 4: I just you always remember, everybody here got a bad story.
- 42:36Speaker 2: Everybody's got a story.
- 42:37Speaker 4: And we have more veterans in here than you.
- 42:40Speaker 2: Know, they don't always the veterans, right.
- 42:44Speaker 8: You know, And and that's you know, that also adds
- 42:49Speaker 8: another layer of you know, being thoughtful about who you're
- 42:57Speaker 8: seeing on the street.
- 42:58Speaker 2: Yeah, and you don't know.
- 43:00Speaker 4: You know, it's got a backstory. Everybody's got you know,
- 43:04Speaker 4: everybody with somebody, some child of course, and and we've
- 43:10Speaker 4: got some incredibly fun people.
- 43:14Speaker 8: Yeah, and you know if they could, if they could
- 43:19Speaker 8: be of help, they would they do.
- 43:22Speaker 5: Ye.
- 43:24Speaker 4: So yeah, just remember the humanity of it all.
- 43:27Speaker 5: And I think that's that's part of what's so valuable
- 43:29Speaker 5: here is that you know, by coming in here, they're
- 43:31Speaker 5: they're seeing that they're getting a warm place or getting
- 43:33Speaker 5: some coffee, they're getting conversations, they're not getting the stigma,
- 43:36Speaker 5: they're not getting the.
- 43:37Speaker 3: Person crossing the street to go the other side. Right. Sure,
- 43:39Speaker 3: this is this is a place where you can sort of.
- 43:42Speaker 5: I think right as I've observed it, you can sort
- 43:44Speaker 5: of forget about those things and just focus on being
- 43:47Speaker 5: human against right and having that human touch with people
- 43:50Speaker 5: who you know, genuinely care about your well being.
- 43:53Speaker 1: Let's also say this, uh, for for all the folks
- 43:58Speaker 1: that do home, we take so much for granted.
- 44:06Speaker 2: You know, I had to catch myself Saturday morning.
- 44:09Speaker 1: I'm like, wow, man, so lucky, you know, to have
- 44:13Speaker 1: the simple things in life. But check on your neighbors,
- 44:17Speaker 1: especially if they're elderly or disabled or marginalized in any way.
- 44:24Speaker 2: Check on your neighbors.
- 44:25Speaker 1: Just make sure that their driveways is shoveled, their walkways shoveled,
- 44:29Speaker 1: their their their vents, their propane uh is topped off,
- 44:35Speaker 1: that their their heating vents are clear from the snow.
- 44:41Speaker 1: You know, if you've got some some extra salt, throw
- 44:43Speaker 1: it down on their on their walkway. You know, you
- 44:45Speaker 1: don't need permission to do that. Just do it, Just
- 44:48Speaker 1: do it, Just do what's right.
- 44:50Speaker 4: I had a story that's something they had years ago
- 44:53Speaker 4: when I was living in Growington. I lived in a
- 44:54Speaker 4: little neighborhood and it's a little like it was like
- 44:59Speaker 4: a little micro neighborhood in the old North End, and
- 45:04Speaker 4: the city was giving out grants four hundred dollars if
- 45:07Speaker 4: you wanted to throw a block party and some way
- 45:11Speaker 4: of getting to know your neighbors, right. And so, you know,
- 45:17Speaker 4: a couple of my neighbors and I we got together
- 45:19Speaker 4: and we threw our block party and we invited in
- 45:22Speaker 4: the deals. You have to like knock on every door,
- 45:24Speaker 4: make sure everybody knows what's happening. And we pitched in
- 45:29Speaker 4: on the food and we took the whole four hundred
- 45:30Speaker 4: dollars and gave it to this like scrappy little Klesmer
- 45:33Speaker 4: band of there were the UVM students. We gave them
- 45:38Speaker 4: and it was so much fun. But I didn't know
- 45:42Speaker 4: that some of my neighbors. I didn't know that there
- 45:45Speaker 4: were apartments in the buildings, you know, like how many
- 45:48Speaker 4: apartments were in these you know, old neighborhood houses. And
- 45:52Speaker 4: so I got to know that there was you know,
- 45:55Speaker 4: an old couple here and somebody else here something. And
- 45:59Speaker 4: that was in the summer. In January. The following January
- 46:02Speaker 4: we had that terrific ice storm, and so our whole yeah,
- 46:07Speaker 4: that's right, that's right, and so our whole you know,
- 46:14Speaker 4: like our power got knocked out. But I lived in
- 46:17Speaker 4: this tiny little cottage and I had heat and hot
- 46:21Speaker 4: water and cooking all by gas. Went natural gas. So
- 46:26Speaker 4: so I was able to like go and check on
- 46:29Speaker 4: people that that I would never have known were even there,
- 46:32Speaker 4: and just say I just made some stew on my
- 46:34Speaker 4: stove because I could, you know, do you need any
- 46:36Speaker 4: do you need anything else? And and it was just
- 46:39Speaker 4: I think that's kind of like the birth of why
- 46:41Speaker 4: I do what I do now, you know, because it
- 46:45Speaker 4: was just that that one little party and recognizing that
- 46:50Speaker 4: there's other humans here might need help. This is a
- 46:54Speaker 4: this is a micro disaster right now with the with
- 46:57Speaker 4: the ice storm.
- 46:58Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, And it feels good to do that stuff, like,
- 47:02Speaker 5: let's be honest, like like it's it's like it feels
- 47:05Speaker 5: you feel it's rewarding to do it. It feels you
- 47:07Speaker 5: feel like a sense of accomplishment of just you know,
- 47:10Speaker 5: doing a good deed like that that in and of itself,
- 47:13Speaker 5: even if you just do it for that reason alone, right,
- 47:16Speaker 5: just for you yourself to feel good about. It's it's
- 47:18Speaker 5: it's rewarding to you know, to see someone feel a
- 47:21Speaker 5: little bit better out of a small, simple action that
- 47:23Speaker 5: you can take exactly.
- 47:25Speaker 1: And this time of year too, I mean, what are
- 47:27Speaker 1: we work less than ten days away from from Christmas?
- 47:30Speaker 1: But if you know, if there's if you can give time,
- 47:33Speaker 1: if you can give money, if you can give coffee,
- 47:35Speaker 1: if you can donate some food, maybe make make something,
- 47:38Speaker 1: bring it down here exactly, that that would be great.
- 47:41Speaker 1: But even man, it's like, let's let's go past Christmas here,
- 47:45Speaker 1: all right.
- 47:45Speaker 2: We get January and February to think about too.
- 47:48Speaker 5: It's already been a you know, we're right in the
- 47:50Speaker 5: beginning of the season. It's already been a tough one
- 47:52Speaker 5: and the tougher months are coming up.
- 47:54Speaker 3: Yeah, you know.
- 47:54Speaker 1: Yeah. The Regroup app, by the way, is fantastic. There's
- 48:01Speaker 1: been a lot of notifications coming in about parking, parking band,
- 48:06Speaker 1: what's the deal. I saw that again last night.
- 48:10Speaker 2: Mostly for snow removal. I mean, I see what's going
- 48:12Speaker 2: on behind Metro.
- 48:13Speaker 3: There was a lot of snow removal last night.
- 48:16Speaker 5: But yeah, it's it's the fastest, easiest, least complicated way
- 48:20Speaker 5: to get news from the city. It's a free app
- 48:23Speaker 5: to download and use. We have over a thousand people
- 48:25Speaker 5: signed up already, which is terrific. We want a thousand
- 48:27Speaker 5: more download an app. It's a little bit of a
- 48:31Speaker 5: complex process to get started, just because of the nature
- 48:34Speaker 5: of it, but we have a really simple step by
- 48:36Speaker 5: step process on our website that you can follow.
- 48:39Speaker 3: Like I said, you don't pay to download it, you
- 48:41Speaker 3: don't pay to use it.
- 48:42Speaker 5: And what happens is whenever we send out a message,
- 48:45Speaker 5: it comes it pops up on your phone like a
- 48:47Speaker 5: bann or like you get a Facebook message or a
- 48:49Speaker 5: text message, except it's from Regroup and it has timely information.
- 48:54Speaker 5: So right now, for especially people who don't have off
- 48:57Speaker 5: street parking, it's really important that you know when the.
- 48:59Speaker 3: Park bands are in effect.
- 49:00Speaker 5: We moved to the parking ban that is weather dependent,
- 49:04Speaker 5: so now people were trying to make it a little
- 49:05Speaker 5: bit easier for people, but that means when we do
- 49:08Speaker 5: have snow, they have to move their cars.
- 49:10Speaker 2: You get the map up there, so there's it's it's
- 49:12Speaker 2: pretty clear. I mean it's.
- 49:15Speaker 5: Yeah, so if you if you don't have our street parking,
- 49:17Speaker 5: that's where you can take your car park it for free,
- 49:20Speaker 5: just during the duration of the of the parking band event.
- 49:23Speaker 5: But yeah, the key is for people to get informed,
- 49:25Speaker 5: stay in form, find a way that you can you know,
- 49:28Speaker 5: get your messages. So we do regroup, We do Facebook,
- 49:30Speaker 5: and we do the website for parking bands. If you're
- 49:33Speaker 5: a Facebook follower, just make sure you're following us so
- 49:35Speaker 5: that you get the updates. So really, really, Barry is
- 49:39Speaker 5: regroup is really the easiest way to do it. You
- 49:41Speaker 5: don't have to think about it, you don't have to
- 49:42Speaker 5: go looking for it, it comes to you.
- 49:44Speaker 1: So it's now removal on North Main Street. I've been
- 49:49Speaker 1: asked about it. Yeah, is that going to be happening
- 49:52Speaker 1: any time soon, just you know from where you park
- 49:54Speaker 1: on the side, the separation between that and the side.
- 49:57Speaker 5: I believe talking to Public Works, I think they're planning
- 50:00Speaker 5: snow removal day this week. So again, be on the
- 50:02Speaker 5: lookout for that message because what we'll do is probably
- 50:05Speaker 5: choose it on a night when there's no other snow operations,
- 50:08Speaker 5: so it'll look weird, right because we'll do a band
- 50:09Speaker 5: when there's nothing in the forecast, but it'll be for cleaning.
- 50:12Speaker 3: So I know they're planning a night this week.
- 50:15Speaker 2: To do that, all right, what's coming up tomorrow night
- 50:17Speaker 2: for city council?
- 50:18Speaker 5: City Council, we are we are looking at the getting
- 50:22Speaker 5: our first look at the year to day budget, so
- 50:25Speaker 5: our finance director will be updating us on where we
- 50:29Speaker 5: stand now and sort of setting the pace and timeline
- 50:32Speaker 5: for the budget.
- 50:34Speaker 3: Season that is coming up ahead.
- 50:35Speaker 5: The budget's the most important thing we do on an
- 50:38Speaker 5: annual basis, sets our priorities.
- 50:40Speaker 1: We dropped the survey link on the aired down a
- 50:43Speaker 1: short time ago, but please please.
- 50:45Speaker 2: Please take the survey.
- 50:47Speaker 1: You know, don't complain if you're not taking the survey,
- 50:53Speaker 1: because that's your opportunity to get your voice out there exactly.
- 50:56Speaker 5: And we look at every comment, we look at every
- 50:58Speaker 5: result that comes and gets charted, and and it'll be
- 51:00Speaker 5: presented to the council in January.
- 51:03Speaker 3: Yeah. So yeah, it's make your voice heard.
- 51:05Speaker 5: There's there's chances for even if you don't like the
- 51:07Speaker 5: you know, we try to capture the breath of options
- 51:10Speaker 5: that people may want to appine on. But we also
- 51:14Speaker 5: leave open ended text answers that you can write in
- 51:17Speaker 5: what you think, right and and I know last year
- 51:19Speaker 5: what we did is we printed them all out, we
- 51:21Speaker 5: gave them to the council, we put them in the packet.
- 51:23Speaker 3: So we don't censor anything.
- 51:24Speaker 5: It's it just we just download it and send it
- 51:26Speaker 5: and let people's opinions be out there.
- 51:28Speaker 1: So what's the biggest As the city manager, what's the
- 51:32Speaker 1: biggest complaint?
- 51:33Speaker 2: Roads?
- 51:33Speaker 3: Roads? Roads?
- 51:35Speaker 5: But I will say, you know, uh, the worst roads
- 51:40Speaker 5: right now are Main Street, Washington Street, Maple those are
- 51:44Speaker 5: state roads. So if you're driving, you know, if we
- 51:46Speaker 5: did an update for the council a couple of months
- 51:49Speaker 5: ago where we updated them on our paving progress from
- 51:52Speaker 5: the last three years. We've paved a whole lot of
- 51:54Speaker 5: our connector roads and they're they're pretty, they're indecent. You know,
- 51:59Speaker 5: Prospect Alan, we all got done this year, which are
- 52:01Speaker 5: in great shape. Merchant's been done for a couple of years.
- 52:06Speaker 3: Cassie was done.
- 52:07Speaker 5: So we've done a lot of you know a lot
- 52:09Speaker 5: of roads that people are using to connect to get
- 52:11Speaker 5: to the main thoroughfares. We know we have you know,
- 52:14Speaker 5: we now we want to move into neighborhoods right and
- 52:16Speaker 5: we want to do grids of neighborhoods at once. But
- 52:19Speaker 5: the ones that are really bad that are left are
- 52:21Speaker 5: the state ones, and the State's not coming through till
- 52:23Speaker 5: twenty thirty.
- 52:24Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know what they're going to look like
- 52:26Speaker 3: in twenty thirty.
- 52:27Speaker 2: That's told.
- 52:27Speaker 5: That's what we've been told, and that's you know, that's
- 52:30Speaker 5: that's not good.
- 52:33Speaker 3: In twenty thirty they may be dirt.
- 52:36Speaker 5: Yeah, So you know, I believe me, I feel the pain,
- 52:40Speaker 5: but I also know when i'm upset at when I'm
- 52:43Speaker 5: driving most of the times I'm on Main Street or
- 52:46Speaker 5: Washington Street, and those aren't our responsibility. Now, we did
- 52:50Speaker 5: do you know the core downtown of Main Street Because
- 52:53Speaker 5: I think everyone remembers those goalies that used to create
- 52:56Speaker 5: rivers and rainstorms. We did that out of our own
- 53:00Speaker 5: time because it was dangerous, it was bad for a downtown,
- 53:03Speaker 5: and so we've we've spent money where really it was
- 53:07Speaker 5: the state's responsibility and because it was a hazard. I
- 53:09Speaker 5: think everyone remembers what it looked like past the Comby sill,
- 53:13Speaker 5: past companies on South Main, Yes, which was a you know,
- 53:16Speaker 5: close your eyes and hope for the best, for the best.
- 53:18Speaker 3: And we paved that because that was a danger. Right,
- 53:20Speaker 3: So we've done what we can.
- 53:22Speaker 5: But those are really city dollars that should have been
- 53:26Speaker 5: spent elsewhere that we spend on Main Street because twenty
- 53:30Speaker 5: thirty not going to cut it, right. Can you imagine
- 53:32Speaker 5: what those goalies would have looked like on Main Street?
- 53:34Speaker 5: I used to you know, I would trip on them,
- 53:37Speaker 5: and I'm thinking of, you know, one of our elderly
- 53:40Speaker 5: neighbors trying to cross the street.
- 53:42Speaker 3: It's a hazard. It's a hazard.
- 53:44Speaker 5: So so yeah, that's the other thing we're doing tomorrow
- 53:47Speaker 5: night is we're having a second reading of the Nuisance
- 53:49Speaker 5: Properties Ordinance, which we've we've already looked at the council level.
- 53:54Speaker 5: This is you know, we we're all probably we can
- 53:56Speaker 5: all probably point to a nuisance property in the city
- 54:00Speaker 5: that we might be familiar with. But this is a
- 54:01Speaker 5: you know, a property that has multiple calls for service,
- 54:03Speaker 5: multiple incidents. We want to bring some accountability to that,
- 54:08Speaker 5: get some some more tools for a police department, fire
- 54:10Speaker 5: department to to intervene in those situations.
- 54:16Speaker 1: Folks that are not attending city council, and we we
- 54:22Speaker 1: want to encourage that. Yeah, please come and come indoors,
- 54:27Speaker 1: enjoy the heat, enjoy this stage with your government. Engage
- 54:33Speaker 1: with your government, learn, learn something new, agree, disagree. But
- 54:38Speaker 1: also if you'd rather stay home, Uh, there's a link
- 54:41Speaker 1: that you guys always post right on dot org.
- 54:44Speaker 2: Yep, you can where you can join by zoom.
- 54:45Speaker 3: You can join by zoom.
- 54:47Speaker 5: A lot of times we end up talking to an
- 54:48Speaker 5: empty room and test tests tests often tests usually comes
- 54:54Speaker 5: in person, and that's so usually she's getting a personal show.
- 54:58Speaker 5: But yeah, you know, this is this is a you know,
- 55:01Speaker 5: if there's a benefit of living in a small place
- 55:03Speaker 5: like this, relatively small right compared to New York City,
- 55:06Speaker 5: is that you can engage directly with your government. You
- 55:08Speaker 5: can ask the mayor a question, you can ask your counselor,
- 55:12Speaker 5: is a question you can ask me a question.
- 55:14Speaker 3: It's it's a.
- 55:15Speaker 5: Privilege that people shouldn't take for granted because you know,
- 55:18Speaker 5: having come from bigger places, you don't get to do that,
- 55:21Speaker 5: right like, yeah, yeah, you know, average Joe on the
- 55:25Speaker 5: street didn't get to ask, you know, when I worked
- 55:27Speaker 5: in New York City Mayor Di Blasio a question about
- 55:30Speaker 5: why the why there's a pothole in front of the street,
- 55:32Speaker 5: right like that just didn't happen. So compass Mayor loaves
- 55:35Speaker 5: on questions or me or your counselor you know, whoever
- 55:37Speaker 5: it is. You have an opportunity to engage directly with
- 55:41Speaker 5: the people who are sort of leading the city.
- 55:43Speaker 3: And you know you shouldn't take that for granted. If
- 55:45Speaker 3: you watching Zoom, if you're raising, yeah, you.
- 55:47Speaker 1: Can raise your absolutely engage on zoom as well. Nicholas
- 55:52Speaker 1: Starelli cashro or city manager, who's stopped by the shelter here,
- 55:56Speaker 1: the warming shelter at the Good Shepherd Church.
- 55:59Speaker 2: And of course test tail with this lady is she's an.
- 56:02Speaker 3: Animal, so she you know, let me just say, Tests
- 56:06Speaker 3: was funded by a state grant.
- 56:08Speaker 5: And when she started twenty four twenty three, right at
- 56:11Speaker 5: the end of twenty three right at the end of
- 56:13Speaker 5: twenty three. She promised me one year under this grand Wow.
- 56:18Speaker 5: And here we are at the end of twenty five.
- 56:21Speaker 5: And so she's and we keep we keep extending it,
- 56:24Speaker 5: and we keep trying to find ways to keep her here.
- 56:27Speaker 5: I don't let her retire. Whenever she comes un announced
- 56:30Speaker 5: to my office, I ask her what it's about, yeah,
- 56:33Speaker 5: before I know, you know, because I don't want her
- 56:35Speaker 5: to start that conversation with the R word. So her
- 56:39Speaker 5: grant runs out in April. We're gonna, you know, either
- 56:42Speaker 5: work really hard to get it extended, or we're going
- 56:45Speaker 5: to find a way to pay for it. Because you know,
- 56:47Speaker 5: what Tess is doing is working. And I think our
- 56:50Speaker 5: neighbors to the north Montfillier, I think a little jealous
- 56:54Speaker 5: of what she's been able to do.
- 56:55Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's work. Said, I wish we had a
- 56:59Speaker 2: test tail.
- 56:59Speaker 3: With everyone wants to test. And I told the state,
- 57:02Speaker 3: you know, this is a brand name.
- 57:03Speaker 5: You want to you want to do something meaningful in this,
- 57:08Speaker 5: in this in this you know, in this work, in
- 57:11Speaker 5: this realm, you need someone like tests, you know, and
- 57:14Speaker 5: someone who's coordinating the work because it is a full
- 57:17Speaker 5: time job. You know. This was falling to me or
- 57:19Speaker 5: to whoever else I was delegating it to when tests
- 57:22Speaker 5: wasn't here, and clearly that wasn't working, right, Like the
- 57:24Speaker 5: amount of energy, effort, care that's going into it now
- 57:28Speaker 5: is you know, one hundred.
- 57:30Speaker 3: Eighty degrees right, it's it's a whole different volumes.
- 57:32Speaker 5: So really hope in the legislature extends tests and then
- 57:37Speaker 5: funds new tests in other communities, because I think we've
- 57:40Speaker 5: proven here that that this works really well.
- 57:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 57:43Speaker 1: How about finally this morning, how about a tip of
- 57:47Speaker 1: the hat to our public safety people are place fire.
- 57:51Speaker 2: E m ts.
- 57:51Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, hats to them.
- 57:57Speaker 5: We have.
- 57:58Speaker 3: We have some some really hard working people.
- 58:00Speaker 5: We have some great leaders in those departments and some
- 58:02Speaker 5: great some great staff in there, and they work hard,
- 58:05Speaker 5: day in, day out. You know, I think, you know,
- 58:08Speaker 5: remember them on Thanksgiving they're gonna be they work Thanksgiving.
- 58:11Speaker 5: Remember them on Christmas when you're home with your families. Yeah,
- 58:13Speaker 5: we have dispatchers on, we have firefighters on, we have
- 58:16Speaker 5: police officers on.
- 58:17Speaker 3: Sure they don't take breaks for that. So we're lucky,
- 58:20Speaker 3: lucky to have them, very lucky.
- 58:22Speaker 1: It was five degrees when I was coming through coming
- 58:25Speaker 1: into Bury this morning. It is Monday, the fifteenth. It's
- 58:28Speaker 1: going to warm up to about eighteen today with some
- 58:30Speaker 1: sun and some clouds, down to eleven tonight, partly cloudy Tuesday.
- 58:35Speaker 1: Tomorrow's kind of the beginning of a temporary warm up.
- 58:40Speaker 1: Twenty eight degrees. Yeah, I know, twenty eight it will
- 58:44Speaker 1: be nice. Wednesday cloudy and forty wow, and then Thursday
- 58:53Speaker 1: clouds and sun and forty one. And I've even heard
- 58:57Speaker 1: forty six, forty seven. It's a possibility. But so so
- 59:01Speaker 1: that's kind of some good news. But uh, Christmas Week
- 59:04Speaker 1: next week, we're gonna snap right back into daytime highs
- 59:07Speaker 1: of around ten to fifteen.
- 59:09Speaker 5: So for the week, I'm still I don't think any
- 59:12Speaker 5: nobody prepared me for these winters. I don't and I
- 59:14Speaker 5: came from upstate New York. But these are still these
- 59:16Speaker 5: are still all bit harder. So I was monitor very
- 59:21Speaker 5: hardy people.
