- 0:00Iran is the source of all the problem in the Middle East.
- 0:02If it's gone, it's a huge opportunity.
- 0:04Where does that leave the 2.2 million people of Gaza, the 3.5
- 0:10million Palestinians in the West Bank?
- 0:12You are failing to the same trap, the trap that the source
- 0:16of the problem in the Middle East is the Israeli Palestinian
- 0:19conflict. You think it's Iran?
- 0:20I think it's Iran. The regime collapse will be the
- 0:23best result of this campaign. But you could get chaos as a
- 0:27result in Iran. You could get what we had in
- 0:30Libya or what we had in, you know, Afghanistan.
- 0:33Nothing will be worse than this regime.
- 0:40Welcome to this special edition of the Forecast from the hills
- 0:43above Tel Aviv. There's an awful lot going on,
- 0:46as you can imagine. We've got the continuing
- 0:48ballistic duel between Iran and ISO.
- 0:51We've got still the threat, or perhaps it's a promise of
- 0:54President Trump getting involved on Israel's side.
- 0:58And the key question in all this is what would the blowback be
- 1:01from that involvement, but also what can the Americans actually
- 1:04achieve in terms of neutralising Iran's nuclear programme?
- 1:08Well, someone who knows the answers to both of those is
- 1:11General Amos Yaddin, the only human being alive to be involved
- 1:15in the neutralisation of two nuclear issues.
- 1:19One was the 1981 attack on the Asarak nuclear reactor in Iraq,
- 1:24where he was a fighter pilot and then as head of Israeli
- 1:27intelligence in 2007. General Yaddin, it's a pleasure
- 1:31to have you on the on the forecast if the Americans get
- 1:33involved. But if Trump decides to get
- 1:35involved in this, what difference will that make?
- 1:38And what do you think? The reaction could be from Iran
- 1:42itself or from Hezbollah, for instance.
- 1:45I think the importance of the American participation has to do
- 1:48on the technical issue of destroying most of the Iranian
- 1:53nuclear facilities. There is like 20 sites, Israel
- 1:58can reach 19 of them. There is one important place
- 2:02called Fodor which is very much fortified against the most
- 2:09formidable bombs that Israel possess and it cannot be
- 2:15penetrate by Israel and the only Air Force that can destroy it is
- 2:19the American Air Force. So this is about the in generic
- 2:22part of the House, but the political part is even more
- 2:26important because if you destroy even 90% of the Iranian
- 2:32capabilities, the 10%, if you don't do any agreement and you
- 2:38let the Iranians develop what they want to develop, they will
- 2:42have the nuclear bomb, not in six months, not in one year, but
- 2:45in two or three years. So what is important is to reach
- 2:49a different agreement on Iran nuclear ambitions.
- 2:53A political agreement. Political agreement.
- 2:55But can that be done if you push them into a corner?
- 2:58No, On the contrary, when you push them enough to the corner,
- 3:02there will be negotiation and Mr. Witkoff will come like
- 3:05Popeye and they will come with a very weak cards.
- 3:09So this is the political objective of this campaign and
- 3:13the Americans, as I say, they can contribute to the in
- 3:17generica part of the House, but more to the political goal.
- 3:20And if the Americans get involved, do you think that will
- 3:23enhance the political strategy of bringing them to the
- 3:27negotiating table in a weakened position, or could it have the
- 3:30opposite effect? Let's speak about the American
- 3:33intervention, because it must. It may be in two forms.
- 3:37One form is the surgical for door operation, a company with a
- 3:42message. We are not interested in
- 3:45destroying Iran. We are not fighting against the
- 3:48Iranian nation. We are only helping the Israelis
- 3:51to complete the nuclear mission. Don't even think about
- 3:56retaliation because then we will go to a full scale war.
- 4:01The other option is to say the Iranians are going to retaliate.
- 4:05They may not listen to the message.
- 4:07Let's pre empt at least on every element of the Iranian
- 4:11militaries that can attack our forces in Qatar, in Kuwait, in
- 4:17UAE and make sure that the Iranian retaliation will be as
- 4:22weak as it can be. From what you know about the
- 4:26Iranians and what you can imagine their current position
- 4:29to be like, what do you think they will decide to do?
- 4:33I think the Iranians were surprised very much from the
- 4:36attack six days ago. They were in a state of shock,
- 4:41surprise, but they may getting out of the of the trauma and
- 4:49craft strategies that will try to take advantage of their
- 4:55strengths, which is strategic, patient, long wars that will
- 5:03make the price for the Israelis and for the American higher,
- 5:09hoping that they will do something like the eight years
- 5:13of the war against Iraq. However, don't mislead
- 5:18ourselves, it is not the same Iran.
- 5:20Most of the Iranians now hate the regime, don't want to go to
- 5:25even 8 months of war and Iran itself.
- 5:31In 1988, the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khomeini say I'm
- 5:36drinking the glass of poison because the Iraqis are now
- 5:41firing missiles to nozzle and Tehran where the elite is
- 5:46living. So let's have a look.
- 5:49Israel have done it not in the in the eight years at the
- 5:53beginning of the war, in the first or second day.
- 5:56So I think there will be a lot of pressure on Iran to to end
- 6:00the war. But we need I think about a week
- 6:04to see where the regime is going.
- 6:07What is the decision making process now?
- 6:10Is the supreme leader really understand what's going on?
- 6:14You know, in the dictatorial regimes, the bad news are not
- 6:20going up so quickly and he may see a different picture of the
- 6:25world that is really there. Was it helpful for Prime
- 6:29Minister Netanyahu to say, as he did the other day, that, you
- 6:33know, regime change could be one of the results of this?
- 6:36Why not go for regime change? And he wasn't exactly calling
- 6:39for it. He wasn't saying that Israel was
- 6:41pursuing it, but he said it would be a welcome result.
- 6:44Was that a helpful thing for him to say?
- 6:47I think it was very smart not to put the regime change in the
- 6:51list of the objective of the campaign.
- 6:54Which he didn't do. Which he didn't do not.
- 6:56Publicly, anyway, yeah. And I think we are not good in
- 7:01having instrument to induce a regime change.
- 7:05The lessons from Iraq, from Afghanistan, from anywhere Libya
- 7:10is is a is a bad lesson. So it is smart not to put it on
- 7:15the list. We are also not good in
- 7:17predicting when it will happen. 19901988 Nobody predict the
- 7:26collapse of the Soviet Union, nobody predicted the collapse of
- 7:30the Egyptian President Mubarak or Assad.
- 7:34So we have to be very modest on that, or after saying that a
- 7:40regime collapse will be the best result of this campaign.
- 7:44But you could get chaos as a result in Iran.
- 7:47You could get what we had in Libya or what we had in, you
- 7:50know, Afghanistan. Nothing will be worse than this
- 7:53regime. This regime is very cool.
- 7:57He has the the goals of wiping Israel off the map is the source
- 8:04of non non stability in the Middle East.
- 8:08If there will be a chaos which I'm not sure.
- 8:11Iran is a state with a tradition of a state.
- 8:17It is 3000 years old empire that know what they want and if it
- 8:25will come back to another regime it's maybe taking some time but
- 8:31they will be busy in their own and they will not endanger Iraq,
- 8:37Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Yemen and the the western world.
- 8:41So nothing is worse than this regime point.
- 8:45Again, if the Americans get involved, is it possible that
- 8:48the political landscape in the Middle East will be so disrupted
- 8:54that even those countries that are currently on Israel's side,
- 8:57or on the fence or on America's side might be forced to
- 9:00intervene against either Israel or America?
- 9:02No way, no way. I just came from a defence
- 9:07conference in Prague. So the Arabs are calling for
- 9:10stability and we all understand what they want, stability as the
- 9:17main political phenomena of their regimes, their kingdoms,
- 9:23the export of oil. However, they will not shed the
- 9:29tear if Iran will be destroyed. Iran is a man's sweat to the
- 9:35Gulf States and to any Arab country, any Arab country.
- 9:39So to your question, I'm I'm look at it exactly from the
- 9:44other side that if the Iranian regime will be toppled, it's a
- 9:48huge opportunity for President Trump and for the Arab countries
- 9:54to shape the Middle East in a new alliance, Arab American
- 10:00Israel that will end the war in Iran and the war in Gaza, go
- 10:07forward with normalisation, go forward with non religionist and
- 10:13Iran is the source of all the problem in the Middle East.
- 10:16If it's gone, it's a huge opportunity.
- 10:18Where does that leave the 2.2 million people of Gaza, the 3.5
- 10:23million Palestinians in the West Bank who are more angry, more
- 10:28bitter, more upset than they've ever been?
- 10:31I think you are failing to the same trap, the traps that the
- 10:36source of the problem in the Middle East is the Israeli
- 10:38Palestinian conflict. You think it's Iran?
- 10:41I think it's Iran. I think we cannot solve the
- 10:43Israeli Palestinian issue because Iran is encouraging the
- 10:47terrorist group Hamas, Islamic Jihad to spoil any any going
- 10:53forward. So we have to finish the war in
- 10:57Gaza, absolutely. But how?
- 10:58What? But what's on the horizon for
- 11:00the Palestinians in Gaza or indeed in the West Bank, their
- 11:02own state, living as second class citizens in a in an
- 11:06Israeli state? What ideas do you have there?
- 11:08This is a subject for another interview.
- 11:11We're coming today to speak about the war, but.
- 11:14Is that also a problem that needs to be solved?
- 11:16Of course, of course. And that's what I said.
- 11:18I said if Iran will be defeated, it's been be much easier to
- 11:23solve the Israeli Palestinian issue because the terror
- 11:26organizations that they supported with money, weapon,
- 11:30ideology will be weaker. And those in the Palestinian
- 11:35part of the the problems that there is no peace has to do with
- 11:38Israelis and Palestinians, you know, You know what the
- 11:42Palestinians are shouting in the in the street of London?
- 11:46Yeah, Palestine, from the river to the sea.
- 11:49We also know what the settlers think.
- 11:50They say Israel from the river to the sea, I mean.
- 11:53So, OK, so let's weaken those who are against peace and it can
- 11:59be done only after we finish the war in Iran and we finish the
- 12:03war in Gaza, we will remove Hamas with against peace against
- 12:07Two state solution. Two state solution still has
- 12:12some leverage, so it has a possibility.
- 12:14Two state solution disappear on the seven of October, but it can
- 12:18come back. It can come back after we defeat
- 12:22Hamas. I think there will be
- 12:24Palestinians that will do the thinking of where it LED them,
- 12:29the Hamas and the terror way. In my plan that I say you need
- 12:34another interview, but it was published in November 2023 that
- 12:39the Gaza Strip will be under an Arab mandate.
- 12:44It will be managed by Palestinians, technocrat
- 12:47Palestinians with some connections to the PA.
- 12:51But it should change the the Gaza Strip into a non
- 12:55militarized region with an Arab education that is not inciting
- 13:04for terror and from Palestine, from the river to the sea.
- 13:08Then we will have a chance for peace.
- 13:10It's unfortunately a generation from now.
- 13:14Just getting back to Trump and Israel and Iran, do you think
- 13:18Trump's somewhat erratic, unpredictable behaviour is
- 13:22helpful to what Israel wants to achieve here or not?
- 13:26No, I think Trump is in a dilemma.
- 13:30On one hand he is against forever wars.
- 13:35He has the MAGA people make America great against that, want
- 13:40isolation, don't want America to be involved in the global
- 13:44affairs. On the other hand, it's he speak
- 13:49about peace through strength and he thinks that America should
- 13:55deter Russia and China. This is make America great
- 13:59again. So who will decide what is the
- 14:02right interpretation? Who will make what is make
- 14:05America great again? It's Trump.
- 14:07So I think at that moment, Trump loves winners.
- 14:12You know America in history came to rescue countries that fail.
- 14:19Like ours. Like yours in World War One, in
- 14:22World War 2, like going to to Kuwait against Iraq.
- 14:27This is the first time that America can join a war on
- 14:31national security goal for America but with a winner and
- 14:35helping them to finish the war. On that question, if they don't
- 14:39get involved for whatever reason, whether it's the MAGA
- 14:42camp or they're worried about blowback in the Middle East, can
- 14:45Israel finish this war on its own terms without Trump's help?
- 14:49When you say finish, you may ask about achieving all the goals.
- 14:55This is not easy. It's not easy to destroy, as I
- 14:58say for though, is. So fordo stays basically.
- 15:02Fordo may stay, Never underestimate the Israeli
- 15:05innovation on other means to destroy Fordo, not by the Air
- 15:10Force, but it will be much difficult to complete the
- 15:15missions. However, for me it's more
- 15:18interesting what is the right time that you are in a climax
- 15:23with your achievement and now you start going down.
- 15:28You know, even successful wars always look like a big victory
- 15:34in the beginning, and then it is, it may change.
- 15:38So Israel must find the times that it achieved most of its
- 15:41goal and look for a mechanism to end the war.
- 15:46Of course there is the other side and we discussed the
- 15:49strategies that the Iranians may choose, but I think we have now
- 15:53a huge leverage against Iran. We achieve El superiority as a
- 15:58fighter pilot who believe in El superiority.
- 16:01What was achieved there is amazing.
- 16:04El superiority, which Israel has, doesn't mean that they
- 16:09still can't fire ballistic missiles in Tel Aviv.
- 16:11No, this is another story. It's the story of the campaign
- 16:14against ballistic missiles. By the way, Israel has the best
- 16:18air defense in the world. Ballistic defense.
- 16:21The Iron David Sling arrow. And intercepting all the drones,
- 16:28about 99% of the drones, hundred of them that were launched
- 16:31against Israel were destroyed. So this is also priority in
- 16:35defence. But we have also priority over
- 16:39the enemy strategic areas, which is I think will make it very
- 16:44difficult for the Iranians to adapt a strategy of long war,
- 16:51war of attrition. Just on their strategy, what do
- 16:54you think it is at the moment? Because they're still firing
- 16:56missiles every day and every night.
- 16:57But a relatively small number, I gather.
- 17:00Is that because they're worried about running out?
- 17:02I think it has to do with with both their capabilities were
- 17:06destroyed, were reduced dramatically.
- 17:12Once again, as a veteran of 1991, I saw the Americans trying
- 17:16to to hunt the launchers. And during the whole War 0
- 17:22success. Really.
- 17:23Yeah. And here about 50% out of 300
- 17:28launchers were already. And without launchers, those
- 17:30missiles are useless, right? Yeah, exactly.
- 17:33So no doubt that their capabilities went down, but it
- 17:36also has to do with their intentions.
- 17:38If they thinking about a long war, they have to have economy
- 17:44of launching. Yesterday it seems like they
- 17:47decided that they are going to a very low number of missiles in
- 17:54every attack to keep the Israelis running to the shelters
- 17:58and to disturb to disrupt our life.
- 18:02This morning it was more massive attack.
- 18:07And of course there is the other side.
- 18:09We have to make sure that we have enough interceptors and to
- 18:12do the right decision which of the missiles will be intercepted
- 18:18and which one you can absorb. Technical question on Fodor, the
- 18:23the bombs, the American bombs, those NOP bombs, I think they
- 18:26have 20 of them launched by the B2 bombers.
- 18:29They can penetrate 60 meters into the ground.
- 18:32I'm told that Fodor is 80 meters in the ground.
- 18:36So how does that work? 1st 4 door is under a mountain
- 18:41and the mountain at the top is if I remember right 110 but you
- 18:46are not attacking them. Go to the side.
- 18:48Yeah. You go to the side here, to the
- 18:50side here when you know that you can penetrate.
- 18:54And there is also a technique that you drop the first ball
- 18:59which is doing 60 and then in the same hole you drop the
- 19:02second ball, so another 60 done. Final question, much of the
- 19:09world sees this as a a really big moment of peril, you know,
- 19:12for your two countries, but also for the region ABS beyond.
- 19:16Is that the way you see it, or do you see it as a moment of
- 19:19opportunity? I think all the grave
- 19:22predictions that if Israel attack Iran, there will be at
- 19:27least regional war and maybe World War Three.
- 19:31All these predictions were found two pessimistic and not
- 19:38connected to reality. And you still believe that even
- 19:40though we don't know whether the Americans have got involved or
- 19:42not I. Always said that no World War
- 19:45Three, no regional war, maybe more than Israel and Iran.
- 19:50If the Iranians will decide to go after their threat to close
- 19:55the Strait of Hormuz or to attack Americans pay attention
- 19:58that they are very, very careful.
- 20:00So I think it's a moment of opportunity if Iran.
- 20:05Will change if the regime will fail and even if the same regime
- 20:10will not have this formidable instruments of nuclear program
- 20:15in the threshold and thousands of ballistic missiles and terror
- 20:20organization all over the Middle East.
- 20:22It's a wonderful opportunity to shape the Middle East towards
- 20:26peace. Let me tell you the the last war
- 20:28President Trump want very much to have Nobel Prize for peace.
- 20:34I'm not sure the Norwegians will give it to him.
- 20:37They would drive him crazy that Obama got it in the first term
- 20:43in the first year one. 100 days, yeah.
- 20:44Without doing any contribution to peace.
- 20:48So he has a plan. His Nobel Prize for peace is a
- 20:52table with four legs. Ceasefire or peace in Ukraine,
- 20:58peace in Gaza, agreement with Iran on the nuclear issue and
- 21:03normalization of Israel and Saudi.
- 21:06Each one of them is a Nobel Prize for peace.
- 21:09He want all of them. But pay attention, three of them
- 21:12are in the Middle East and to shape differently the Middle
- 21:16East. Iran should be removed and then
- 21:19the the sky is the limit opportunity wise.
- 21:23You're an optimist. Let me tell you something.
- 21:27When I was Chief of Intelligence, I used to brief
- 21:30President Shimon Peres. And you know when you are chief
- 21:34of intelligence, you usually put forward the risk and President
- 21:40Peres, say, Amos, why you are so pessimistic.
- 21:44The pessimist and the optimist are dying the same but living
- 21:48differently. General Gandin, thank you very
- 21:50much indeed. That's it from the special
- 21:51edition of the forecast in the hills above Tel Aviv.
- 21:55I hope you enjoyed it. See you next time.
