- 0:22Speaker 1: Welcome to this edition of the Uncharted Sounds podcast. Oh nol,
- 0:27Speaker 1: I'm here again with my mate Martin.
- 0:28Speaker 2: How are you doing? Martin?
- 0:29Speaker 3: Hey?
- 0:30Speaker 4: Hey, you doing?
- 0:30Speaker 2: No, I'm good, excellent.
- 0:32Speaker 1: So before we actually get into the band today, what
- 0:35Speaker 1: have you been listening to this week?
- 0:36Speaker 2: For me?
- 0:37Speaker 4: This week, I've been listening to Garbage pretty sure you
- 0:41Speaker 4: know they are. They had an album out called Anthology,
- 0:45Speaker 4: which is like the greatest hits collection really, but it's
- 0:47Speaker 4: a brilliant one to put on. You know, as a
- 0:50Speaker 4: vinyl record, you get all the songs, which is great,
- 0:53Speaker 4: and they've had so many brilliant songs that I just
- 0:57Speaker 4: love that. I mean, they've got They've had a more
- 0:59Speaker 4: recent album which I've also got, but yeah, Anthology is
- 1:02Speaker 4: the one I've been playing this week.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Excellently cool. So I've been listening to the Rifles.
- 1:06Speaker 1: We both love the Rifles, we do, and I kind
- 1:09Speaker 1: of know a band, but just a great sound.
- 1:11Speaker 2: It's really brilliant.
- 1:12Speaker 1: The album's called a Great Escape and I managed to
- 1:14Speaker 1: pick up the limited edition anniversary edition on Dream Vinyl.
- 1:18Speaker 1: It's great to listen to. So who are talking about
- 1:20Speaker 1: today then, Martin?
- 1:21Speaker 4: So, no, we've got today a band that I probably
- 1:24Speaker 4: didn't think that we would actually get to talk about
- 1:28Speaker 4: or talk to, and that is the band Boy kill Boy.
- 1:38Speaker 5: So.
- 1:42Speaker 6: Demanding, I can't breathe anymore again, please forgive me and
- 1:53Speaker 6: forgets me.
- 2:00Speaker 7: All bang.
- 2:07Speaker 8: U back.
- 2:36Speaker 9: I love them.
- 2:36Speaker 2: They're great.
- 2:37Speaker 4: Now we're going to be talking to one of the
- 2:39Speaker 4: band later on, which will cover so which is great.
- 2:42Speaker 4: But the big news I guess that we should probably
- 2:44Speaker 4: just completely start with right at the beginning of this,
- 2:47Speaker 4: is that they are they're reforming for an anniversary concert
- 2:52Speaker 4: of their first album, Civilian. We'll get into all the
- 2:54Speaker 4: details obviously, but that's in October of twenty twenty six,
- 2:59Speaker 4: so later on this year. That's for us, is you know, fantastic,
- 3:03Speaker 4: and we also now get a chance to talk about
- 3:05Speaker 4: a band that, as I said, I didn't really feel
- 3:09Speaker 4: that we would actually get to So.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Yeah, no, they're a great, great band, and I think
- 3:13Speaker 1: when we talked about it, we realize we've both played
- 3:15Speaker 1: their stuff all the time. So it's just one of
- 3:17Speaker 1: those bands that are really you know, present for us
- 3:20Speaker 1: in the band that if any of our listeners haven't
- 3:22Speaker 1: heard them, we get an opportunity now to see what
- 3:24Speaker 1: great songs have.
- 3:25Speaker 4: Got yeah, and their story actually is once again, as
- 3:28Speaker 4: with many of the bands that we've that we deal with,
- 3:31Speaker 4: they've they've all got a great, great story. So should
- 3:34Speaker 4: we Let's just work our way through that, shall we.
- 3:37Speaker 4: They sort of began in the sort of two thousand
- 3:39Speaker 4: and three time, but the band members were Chris Peck
- 3:43Speaker 4: on vocals and guitar, and we'll be chatting to Chris
- 3:46Speaker 4: later on in this episode. And then you've got Kevin
- 3:49Speaker 4: Chase on bass, Pete Carr on keyboards, and Chasma Mood
- 3:52Speaker 4: on drums. And as I say, the band started two
- 3:56Speaker 4: thousand and three sort of began in East London around
- 3:59Speaker 4: Layton Stone. The singer and guitarist, Chris Peck had spent
- 4:02Speaker 4: sort of quite a few years in small bands around
- 4:05Speaker 4: that London indie scene, but I think was probably looking
- 4:08Speaker 4: for something more and he started writing some songs with
- 4:11Speaker 4: Chasma Mood and I think they sort of had this
- 4:14Speaker 4: view that they were influenced by bands like Talking Heads,
- 4:17Speaker 4: the Cure inter Poll, so that's sort of that post
- 4:21Speaker 4: punky guitars, new wave SyncE sort of dancing rhythms type thing.
- 4:25Speaker 4: They then recruited Pete Carr on keyboards and Kevin Chase
- 4:29Speaker 4: on bass, and they took their name. This is an
- 4:31Speaker 4: interesting story, so they took their name from Chris mishearing
- 4:37Speaker 4: another band called Boy called Roy. So that point, although
- 4:42Speaker 4: they were called Future of Junior, by the following year
- 4:44Speaker 4: two thousand and four they'd sort of officially been called
- 4:48Speaker 4: Boy Kill Boy. They played regularly at some of the
- 4:51Speaker 4: venues in London, and I'm pretty sure you'll have been
- 4:53Speaker 4: to some of these Camden Barfly, Dublin Castle, Lexington.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Classic venues for that era as well.
- 5:00Speaker 4: And I think that at that time London was full
- 5:02Speaker 4: of those sort of indie bands trying to follow in
- 5:05Speaker 4: that success of you know, some of the more well
- 5:07Speaker 4: known bands like Franz Ferdinand, the Libertines, you know, Block
- 5:10Speaker 4: Party and so on, and I think Boykioldboy were then
- 5:13Speaker 4: getting quite a bit of a traction. They had quite
- 5:15Speaker 4: an energetic live show. More importantly, some of their songs
- 5:17Speaker 4: had really catchy, you know, catchy hooks, and that got
- 5:20Speaker 4: them the notice by enemy journalists Radio one DJs and
- 5:25Speaker 4: they started talking about them as a band that they
- 5:28Speaker 4: you know, that people need to watch. So even though
- 5:30Speaker 4: they were playing some of those smaller club gigs, you know,
- 5:33Speaker 4: They were definitely getting quite a bit of profile off
- 5:36Speaker 4: the back of.
- 5:37Speaker 2: That, so a bit of buzz going around about them.
- 5:39Speaker 4: Then yeah, I think yeah, I think so. Then mid
- 5:42Speaker 4: two thousand and two thousand and five that's when they
- 5:44Speaker 4: had their first sort of single breakthrough. I guess this
- 5:47Speaker 4: was their probably their breakthrough year, and that was Susie This.
- 5:55Speaker 6: Is not a.
- 5:58Speaker 10: Thing.
- 5:59Speaker 7: The same member tight span long next to You is a.
- 6:06Speaker 8: Very nice pants to go sad times as.
- 6:12Speaker 11: A John Tis time I listen to John as they
- 6:21Speaker 11: said don't let me down. They said, don't let me down.
- 6:27Speaker 5: The.
- 6:32Speaker 7: Shout down, chopped down, cattle down, the simbo let Ski
- 6:45Speaker 7: count cattle towns in the simboy.
- 6:51Speaker 5: Are You?
- 6:57Speaker 4: And that was released by a Fish Pandora Records didn't
- 7:01Speaker 4: chart other than got to about number one hundred and
- 7:03Speaker 4: thirty in the UK chart, but it quickly became their
- 7:06Speaker 4: sort of signature song. Big single on chorus as you've heard,
- 7:09Speaker 4: and a very real cynthiy riff associated with it. They
- 7:12Speaker 4: got quite a bit of radio play from Zane Lo,
- 7:15Speaker 4: Joe Wilie and so on.
- 7:16Speaker 1: It was interesting about we talked about Fierce Panda Records
- 7:19Speaker 1: there recently we talked to the Blue Tones, and they
- 7:22Speaker 1: were out of an early EP that Fierce Panda released
- 7:26Speaker 1: with various bands and they were a bit of a
- 7:28Speaker 1: They were almost like a stepping stone to a lot
- 7:31Speaker 1: of bands. The main record companies took an interest. I
- 7:33Speaker 1: think if Fierce Panda released something, to check out the
- 7:36Speaker 1: bands on them. So those EPs they did, they had
- 7:39Speaker 1: several artists. As I said, the Blue Tones was on
- 7:41Speaker 1: one another one had ash, another one had Supergrass and
- 7:44Speaker 1: so on. But they also did some singles of individual
- 7:47Speaker 1: bands which set them on their way. One was Placebo, Embrace,
- 7:52Speaker 1: Idlewild and Right and actually've got this summer in my
- 7:56Speaker 1: collection Coldplay, so kick them off for it and started
- 7:59Speaker 1: to their career by being having to release of Fast Panda.
- 8:03Speaker 4: Yeah, brilliant Okay. The second single, Civil Sin, was released
- 8:07Speaker 4: around September of two thousand and five.
- 8:09Speaker 12: Great song, Let's sad.
- 9:39Speaker 4: And actually that song also appeared on FIFA seven, one
- 9:44Speaker 4: of the big sort of games console games at that time,
- 9:48Speaker 4: which clearly gave them a huge huge amount of.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Exposing that were massive.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Those games were massive of the that would have been
- 9:53Speaker 1: a huge bit of exposure for them.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Really good.
- 9:55Speaker 4: Okay, So those early gigs they opened the Radio One
- 9:58Speaker 4: Enemy stage at the Reading and Leeds Festival had support
- 10:01Speaker 4: slots with bands that you and I both really love,
- 10:05Speaker 4: Hard Fire, Maximum Park, the Rakes.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Yeah, so I saw them.
- 10:09Speaker 1: Actually, they had an Enemy tour of small bands and
- 10:13Speaker 1: they had three on the three bands on the lineup
- 10:16Speaker 1: every time me and you know, Tomo, we went together
- 10:19Speaker 1: to the roadmend to see them and the three bands
- 10:21Speaker 1: that are advertised. For sure, the top one was different
- 10:24Speaker 1: than the advert Boy Kill Boy we saw first. I
- 10:27Speaker 1: think we knew Susie, so it was the one song
- 10:30Speaker 1: we knew only they were great. The second band was
- 10:32Speaker 1: the Rakes, which were great. Then the third band, now,
- 10:35Speaker 1: I don't know who we expected to see. I think
- 10:38Speaker 1: it might have been Hard Fire all the Cribs actually,
- 10:40Speaker 1: but it wasn't them. Who came on as a band
- 10:42Speaker 1: we never even heard of, and they blew us away.
- 10:44Speaker 1: That was Maximo Park.
- 10:46Speaker 4: Okay. As I said, two thousand and six was sort
- 10:48Speaker 4: of peak rise of Boy Killed Boy, and they had
- 10:52Speaker 4: their sort of breakout single back again, and we played
- 10:55Speaker 4: that at the beginning of the episode. But they also
- 10:58Speaker 4: re released Susie and it was much more successful this time,
- 11:02Speaker 4: getting to number seventeen in the ukhl and as I
- 11:05Speaker 4: Say also appeared on the racing game Test Drive Unlimited.
- 11:09Speaker 4: In May of two thousand and six, they released their
- 11:11Speaker 4: debut album Civilians, and that's the album they're going to
- 11:16Speaker 4: play in full at the Reunion twentieth anniversary Reunion concert
- 11:21Speaker 4: in October in London at London Skyls.
- 11:24Speaker 2: It's just a great album, really great album.
- 11:26Speaker 4: Reached number sixteen in the charts and we've mentioned some
- 11:29Speaker 4: of the key tracks there Back Again, Susie's Civil Sin
- 11:31Speaker 4: and so on, but there's still plenty more on there.
- 11:33Speaker 4: It was produced by a guy called John Cornfield and
- 11:36Speaker 4: interesting love he's also going to be the sound guy
- 11:39Speaker 4: in this anniversary show in London now.
- 11:42Speaker 1: John Corfield is quite interesting because he has his own studio,
- 11:45Speaker 1: he's got his own place dan in. Cornwall's obviously recorded
- 11:48Speaker 1: a lot of stuff, so bands have been down there
- 11:50Speaker 1: and recorded with him and he's produced a.
- 11:52Speaker 2: Lot of stuff.
- 11:52Speaker 1: He's also mixed a lot of stuff as well, so
- 11:55Speaker 1: between the mix and the producing, he's done so many bands.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Some of them just of notes would be Muse, New Model, Army, Supergrass,
- 12:03Speaker 1: Razor Light and the Stone Roses.
- 12:05Speaker 4: Two thousand and six, they went on this we're doing
- 12:08Speaker 4: major tours at this point, the Enemy New Music Tour,
- 12:12Speaker 4: of which they were headliners. And about other bands on
- 12:15Speaker 4: that tour, for example, the bands like the Automatic, Long Blondes,
- 12:19Speaker 4: some others as well, Ford Russia, Howling Bells, just to
- 12:23Speaker 4: name a couple. Obviously some of the key venues around
- 12:26Speaker 4: the country in Bristol, Manchester and so on. And apparently
- 12:29Speaker 4: that tour was quite chaotic because Chris pet used to
- 12:32Speaker 4: stage dive into the crowd. I don't know if you
- 12:36Speaker 4: did that when you saw them, but note that I recall, okay,
- 12:39Speaker 4: but you can see that, you know, they were getting,
- 12:41Speaker 4: you know, bigger acts that they were touring with, Echo
- 12:44Speaker 4: and the Bunnyman, Charlatan's, the Kooks and so on. And
- 12:48Speaker 4: then they also performed Susie on Top of the Pops
- 12:51Speaker 4: once again, Top of the Pops being a key even
- 12:53Speaker 4: in the mid two thousands was a key, key program, absolutely.
- 12:58Speaker 1: And the one thing I did notice was that they
- 13:00Speaker 1: didn't do any John Poole sessions actually, which is very
- 13:03Speaker 1: unusual for a band of that era. But and Lisa
- 13:05Speaker 1: got on Top of the Pots was the other big thing.
- 13:06Speaker 4: Yeah, Then into the following year two thousand and seven
- 13:09Speaker 4: where they started to sort of they were still touring,
- 13:13Speaker 4: they started to build up towards their second album, and
- 13:16Speaker 4: clearly the massive success of Civilian meant that, you know,
- 13:19Speaker 4: there was probably quite high expectation for this sort of
- 13:23Speaker 4: second album. Whilst they were still appearing at some of
- 13:25Speaker 4: those those big festivals, reading leads and so on, lots
- 13:29Speaker 4: of European ones, they were doing sessions on you know,
- 13:31Speaker 4: Joe Wiley, like the Live Lounge for example, on Radio One. Anyway,
- 13:35Speaker 4: that all led to a release of their second album,
- 13:39Speaker 4: Stars and the Seat in March of two thousand and eight,
- 13:42Speaker 4: and that got to number ninety eight in the UK charts,
- 13:45Speaker 4: so perhaps not achieving some of the higher chart positions
- 13:48Speaker 4: that Civilian.
- 13:49Speaker 2: Did, but that was produced by Dave Sardi.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Now Dave sided very interesting, a little look at him
- 13:55Speaker 1: and fascinating that he's got so much work under his belt.
- 13:59Speaker 1: He's done a lot of films, scores, so films like
- 14:01Speaker 1: twenty one, Jump Street to Zoolander. There's a massive list
- 14:04Speaker 1: of films that he's done the score for and he's
- 14:06Speaker 1: had loads and loads of producing and mixing of bands.
- 14:10Speaker 1: And I think, you know, we talked about the kind
- 14:11Speaker 1: of bands that we've covered on the podcast, probably a
- 14:14Speaker 1: lot of them would be on there also. The bigger
- 14:16Speaker 1: ones would be Supergrass, Oasis, the Rolling Stones, who I mean,
- 14:21Speaker 1: some massive stuff. And actually he also produced and mixed
- 14:25Speaker 1: the song you Know My Name by Chris Cornell, which
- 14:28Speaker 1: is obviously the big theme song. You're a massive James
- 14:30Speaker 1: Bond fan on Casino Royale.
- 14:33Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, great song that is yes, So I mean
- 14:36Speaker 4: as I say the album was. The critics I think
- 14:38Speaker 4: were quite lukewarm on it. I think sounds were disappointing.
- 14:41Speaker 4: Had a single Promises in two thousand and eight, which
- 14:43Speaker 4: is actually a really good song.
- 14:44Speaker 2: It's a great song.
- 15:00Speaker 7: Is promises.
- 15:04Speaker 13: That to be broken instruct that's forgotten honestly of alogy
- 15:13Speaker 13: of alogy. Here's my confession. I am from my lesson
- 15:20Speaker 13: long befoll sochse the crimes, oppose the fears, the truth
- 15:27Speaker 13: behind the soul it is.
- 15:30Speaker 5: I'll find my way back from the Star's embassy.
- 15:36Speaker 7: This kind of judge is not be to me. I'll
- 15:43Speaker 7: find my way back on Jessy's agency.
- 15:49Speaker 5: This sparation is.
- 15:52Speaker 7: A better me.
- 15:57Speaker 10: O.
- 16:01Speaker 13: Promisays no promises. YouTube dismissin are a bit Dismissa, John
- 16:12Speaker 13: Phone Blogy, it's no bologies.
- 16:20Speaker 7: Did you turn this round to?
- 16:22Speaker 13: And anometers going on long fall.
- 16:27Speaker 14: So so it's the crimes that pose the fears, the
- 16:30Speaker 14: truth behind the cubits.
- 16:34Speaker 7: I'll mind my way back from mast.
- 16:38Speaker 4: So there was moments, but ultimately, whilst they were still
- 16:42Speaker 4: touring it doing things like v Festival and the Camden
- 16:44Speaker 4: Crawl and so on. But the album, you know, didn't
- 16:47Speaker 4: sell well and they lost momentum, and of course, unfortunately
- 16:51Speaker 4: in October of that year two doesn't it that they
- 16:55Speaker 4: sort officially split up, ending what was a four year run.
- 16:58Speaker 4: Effectively there are to the band. The members moved on
- 17:01Speaker 4: to a variety of different careers. Chris Peck carried on
- 17:05Speaker 4: releasing some solo demos online, Pete Carr interesting enough, tour
- 17:09Speaker 4: as a keyboardist with Marina and Diamonds, and keV Chase
- 17:13Speaker 4: became a session musician and DJ. Fast forward to twenty sixteen,
- 17:20Speaker 4: that's when ten years of Civilian, the ten year anniversary
- 17:24Speaker 4: of Civilian, the band reunited again and they did a
- 17:28Speaker 4: couple of sold out gigs in November twenty sixteen, and
- 17:31Speaker 4: they said at the time that it was a sort
- 17:33Speaker 4: of proper goodbye show. They then did another one off
- 17:36Speaker 4: show in twenty eighteen standalone London gig, but no they
- 17:42Speaker 4: had no new music were followed and as I said
- 17:44Speaker 4: earlier on this year twenty twenty six, it's the twentieth
- 17:48Speaker 4: anniversary reunion of Civilian at the Skala in London at
- 17:52Speaker 4: the back end of October. So that's sold out now
- 17:55Speaker 4: as well.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Oh great much.
- 17:56Speaker 1: That was really really interesting. The great enow to have
- 17:59Speaker 1: a chat with Chris find out a little bit more.
- 18:01Speaker 9: Welcome to the podcast, Chris, thank you, thanks for having me, guys,
- 18:04Speaker 9: I really appreciate it.
- 18:05Speaker 4: Yeah, so before we talking more in general about the band,
- 18:09Speaker 4: obviously you've got the big event coming up this year
- 18:12Speaker 4: which is terrific, the twentieth anniversary gig at the end
- 18:15Speaker 4: of October. And obviously I managed to get some tickets
- 18:18Speaker 4: for that, Chris, So, which is.
- 18:21Speaker 9: Great, true, man, that's amazing quick didn't they?
- 18:24Speaker 10: Yeah?
- 18:24Speaker 4: Yeah, I was going to say we pleased it sold
- 18:26Speaker 4: out so quickly.
- 18:27Speaker 15: I mean yeah, I mean to be honest with you, man,
- 18:29Speaker 15: I was really like, I was quite nervous about it
- 18:31Speaker 15: because the rest of the guys, you know, we've been
- 18:34Speaker 15: talking about how we're going to mark this, and it
- 18:36Speaker 15: was getting a bit a bit closer to the closer
- 18:39Speaker 15: to the date of like the year.
- 18:40Speaker 9: Basically it's like, shit, what we're going to do.
- 18:43Speaker 15: And we got in touch with our old management or
- 18:45Speaker 15: one of the guys from our old management, and he
- 18:47Speaker 15: got a little team together and some people that we've
- 18:49Speaker 15: worked with before, and they were saying straight away the
- 18:51Speaker 15: Skylight and I was like, it's just a bit big,
- 18:54Speaker 15: isn't it. You know, it just felt like a bit
- 18:57Speaker 15: too adventurous, to be honest with you. You know, like
- 18:59Speaker 15: it just the tickets just flew out on that same day.
- 19:01Speaker 15: I mean I just could not believe it. Lots of
- 19:04Speaker 15: our friends didn't manage to get them in the end,
- 19:06Speaker 15: and you know, so, yeah, I'm massively hyped about it.
- 19:09Speaker 15: You know, We've got some fun things lined up as well.
- 19:12Speaker 15: I can't confirm the support just yet, hopefully know who
- 19:16Speaker 15: that's going to be. But I've got like, we've got
- 19:18Speaker 15: our old producer, John Cornfield, who recorded the first album,
- 19:22Speaker 15: is going to do the sound for us that night,
- 19:24Speaker 15: which is going to be pretty special because he's still
- 19:27Speaker 15: out there doing bands and things like that. And yeah,
- 19:29Speaker 15: I just got like an old school team, like even
- 19:31Speaker 15: our old sort of like texts and stuff for like
- 19:34Speaker 15: they say they're going to be available. We'll see when
- 19:35Speaker 15: we get the other date. But you know it would
- 19:37Speaker 15: be it's going to be a nice family affair, put
- 19:40Speaker 15: it that way, and.
- 19:42Speaker 9: We're really excited. Man.
- 19:43Speaker 15: We had had some rehearsals recently, and it's amazing how
- 19:46Speaker 15: quick we just locked back in.
- 19:48Speaker 9: I mean, it's just bizarre.
- 19:49Speaker 15: We did play things a little bit slowly at first,
- 19:52Speaker 15: because you know, twenty years later from the original version
- 19:56Speaker 15: you tend to naturally so, but you know, we're still
- 20:00Speaker 15: getting ahead around that and sort of that.
- 20:02Speaker 9: But yeah, sounds good already.
- 20:03Speaker 4: Man, did they take any kind of thing to get
- 20:07Speaker 4: to do it?
- 20:08Speaker 9: Was there?
- 20:08Speaker 4: Was it like a you know, the band, We're all
- 20:11Speaker 4: up for it straight away, to.
- 20:13Speaker 15: Be honest with you, like, I mean, look, we all
- 20:16Speaker 15: reached out to each other and we were kind of
- 20:17Speaker 15: like slightly awkward, like a bit like you're asking someone
- 20:19Speaker 15: out on a date. It's like kind of like, you know,
- 20:21Speaker 15: I was just wondering, you know, and we were sort
- 20:24Speaker 15: of saying, are we thinking of doing anything?
- 20:27Speaker 9: Or like should I get excited about this kind of thing?
- 20:29Speaker 15: And you know, and and we started kind of throwing
- 20:32Speaker 15: around some ideas and I was kind of always saying like,
- 20:35Speaker 15: I wouldn't mind doing something unless if it's got some
- 20:38Speaker 15: new material attached to it. But yeah, again, I think
- 20:41Speaker 15: it's I mean, the rest of the guys haven't been
- 20:44Speaker 15: playing in bands for a while, not like not since
- 20:47Speaker 15: the last ten years anyway, and I have, I've been playing.
- 20:51Speaker 15: I've got like a cover band with some friends, which
- 20:53Speaker 15: we enjoy playing. And you know, they're all sort of
- 20:56Speaker 15: ex pros or whatever you want to call it. Like,
- 20:58Speaker 15: you know, it's just like everyone just like playing songs
- 21:00Speaker 15: that they like to play. And you know, we sort
- 21:03Speaker 15: of had a bit of a sort of side hustle,
- 21:05Speaker 15: so my kind of itch in a way was already
- 21:09Speaker 15: scratched kind of, you know, like albeit in a very
- 21:13Speaker 15: low key version. And it's quite different when it's not
- 21:15Speaker 15: your own music, obviously, but it is completely different, you know,
- 21:17Speaker 15: getting in that room recently with the boys and playing
- 21:21Speaker 15: and resurrecting all those old.
- 21:22Speaker 9: Songs, it is truly special.
- 21:24Speaker 15: And you know, obviously for all those years we've been
- 21:27Speaker 15: in touch with our kind of band base or followers
- 21:30Speaker 15: or friends or whatever that you know, online and it is.
- 21:34Speaker 15: It is quite amazing how active it kind of is really,
- 21:38Speaker 15: and not just not just that, but with all sorts
- 21:40Speaker 15: of people that you can never imagine, like people all
- 21:42Speaker 15: over the world really who are sort of telling us
- 21:46Speaker 15: stories and dming us how many and most really important
- 21:50Speaker 15: moments it's been in their lives and all that kind
- 21:53Speaker 15: of stuff. So then when we announced it started putting
- 21:56Speaker 15: the fooders out there, it was like it was a
- 21:58Speaker 15: sure fire decision, real like, we're definitely going to go
- 22:00Speaker 15: for this, this is the right thing to do.
- 22:01Speaker 10: You know.
- 22:02Speaker 4: Well, I was talking about my son earlier. He's a
- 22:05Speaker 4: massive boy kill Boy fan right right from back in
- 22:09Speaker 4: the day. Yeah, so he's in the mid thirties now,
- 22:12Speaker 4: but yeah, Ian his name, but he's he's coming with me.
- 22:16Speaker 4: So he's absolutely made up that he can that he
- 22:19Speaker 4: can see the band, you know, so which is fantastically mate.
- 22:23Speaker 15: Well listen, you know, we definitely need to have a
- 22:26Speaker 15: little catch up with you and in afterwards, man, because
- 22:29Speaker 15: you know, like I say, I wanted to be a
- 22:31Speaker 15: real family affair, and you know, it's kind of a
- 22:34Speaker 15: real special opportunity, isn't it for us all? Or to
- 22:36Speaker 15: like link and join up and massive, just like it's
- 22:39Speaker 15: a big celebration, man, Like that's what it is. It's
- 22:42Speaker 15: like we're one of those bands I think where you know,
- 22:45Speaker 15: if you'd heard of us, then you're either kind of
- 22:48Speaker 15: one way or the other. We weren't really big enough
- 22:51Speaker 15: to receive a huge amount of backlash, to be honest
- 22:53Speaker 15: with you, I'm sure it was all going on behind
- 22:55Speaker 15: the scenes, and maybe we just weren't pointed in the
- 22:58Speaker 15: direction of those kind of channels, you know. But like
- 23:02Speaker 15: I'm sure we're a bit of a marmte band, you know,
- 23:04Speaker 15: but there are people that are really passionate about it.
- 23:07Speaker 15: And so that's the kind of stuff that blows my
- 23:09Speaker 15: mind and it makes me realize that we're making the
- 23:11Speaker 15: right decisions when you know, creatively going one way or
- 23:16Speaker 15: the other. And we weren't an obvious band in the
- 23:19Speaker 15: sense that like we weren't fitting into a complete niche
- 23:24Speaker 15: or like a kind of we weren't fitting into a
- 23:27Speaker 15: scene very obviously, I think, you know, although we started
- 23:30Speaker 15: off in East London with you know, all the other
- 23:31Speaker 15: East London bands, which we were big around that time,
- 23:34Speaker 15: and we would say probably that was the nearest scene.
- 23:37Speaker 15: We were kind of anyway attached to. But I was
- 23:40Speaker 15: really keen on pursuing the ambition of kind of not
- 23:45Speaker 15: following a code of what we needed to sound like.
- 23:48Speaker 15: And I guess we're also very lucky with the team
- 23:50Speaker 15: that we had around us that supported that, you know,
- 23:52Speaker 15: which would say, yeah, like shoot Me Down is a
- 23:54Speaker 15: wicked song and that needs to be released, even though
- 23:57Speaker 15: it probably wasn't going to be like a massive sales thing.
- 24:00Speaker 15: I think we released that through war Child at the end.
- 24:03Speaker 15: I mean, that's quite sentimental song, you know, with a
- 24:06Speaker 15: video to go with it.
- 24:09Speaker 5: It's hard to say house in the life, I lost
- 24:21Speaker 5: my way, lost my way, my.
- 24:31Speaker 7: You should have left, should have left not It's no mistake,
- 24:44Speaker 7: no mistake, shooting well to say it.
- 25:24Speaker 15: I was quite mad doing that video actually, because I
- 25:26Speaker 15: kept I had to do it. I had a stunt man,
- 25:28Speaker 15: but I had to do some of the stunts myself,
- 25:29Speaker 15: like jumping backwards off of like huge great stairwells and stuff.
- 25:32Speaker 15: And it ended up at the end where I had
- 25:34Speaker 15: all this fake blood in my mouth and I had
- 25:36Speaker 15: to cough it up into my face and I coughed
- 25:39Speaker 15: it all out of my mouth whilst singing the words
- 25:41Speaker 15: or miming the words this camera above my head. I mean,
- 25:44Speaker 15: I've never done anything like this before, and everyone's standing
- 25:47Speaker 15: around looking down at me, and I might singing shoot
- 25:49Speaker 15: me down with this splurting out blood and.
- 25:51Speaker 9: It went in my eyes and my eyes went red
- 25:54Speaker 9: and I kind of carried on going.
- 25:55Speaker 15: It's like the rest of the boys said afterwards, it
- 25:58Speaker 15: was really emotional watching because they were just like, you
- 26:00Speaker 15: looked really like you were going through it. But unfortunately
- 26:03Speaker 15: that version didn't get out because it was a bit
- 26:05Speaker 15: too gruesome. It was a bit too blood thirsty, and
- 26:07Speaker 15: then so they used the more sort of mellow one.
- 26:10Speaker 15: But yeah, it was good fun, for good fun shooting
- 26:11Speaker 15: that video.
- 26:12Speaker 2: Excellent stuff.
- 26:13Speaker 1: So, going right back in time, when you first got
- 26:16Speaker 1: into music, what kind of stuff were you listening to?
- 26:17Speaker 2: What were kind of you influenced by?
- 26:19Speaker 15: You know, well, when I was really little, it was
- 26:21Speaker 15: about things like adamant. I justsed up like Adaman once
- 26:24Speaker 15: I've got my mum to stressed me up, and I
- 26:26Speaker 15: went up and down the driveway and people would be
- 26:28Speaker 15: laughing at me and stuff. I didn't quite understand why,
- 26:30Speaker 15: because I honestly thought that I kind of was Adam Man.
- 26:32Speaker 15: But I was only about six at the time, but
- 26:34Speaker 15: you know, he was on the TV a lot, on
- 26:36Speaker 15: kids' TV, and it was like, yeah, I want to
- 26:38Speaker 15: dress up like that kind of weird, pirate, sort of dandy,
- 26:41Speaker 15: slightly girly thing.
- 26:42Speaker 9: I don't know, I was like, so Mum was cool,
- 26:45Speaker 9: she went with it.
- 26:45Speaker 15: My next door neighbor then gave me an album because
- 26:47Speaker 15: he used to work at Decca Records, so he had
- 26:49Speaker 15: a whole room full of records and he came out
- 26:51Speaker 15: and gave me the Dog Eat Dog album, and I
- 26:54Speaker 15: as my reward, probably to get me off the driveway
- 26:56Speaker 15: apart from anything else, and went inside and that record
- 27:00Speaker 15: to death man. It was quite alternative for a little
- 27:03Speaker 15: boy as I was. But then years later got into
- 27:06Speaker 15: Prince again, which kind of funny enough. Has that got
- 27:08Speaker 15: that same sort of royalty sort of twisted sort of
- 27:11Speaker 15: genderly thing going on as well, Like I really loved Prince,
- 27:14Speaker 15: really really got into his music. I don't know, I
- 27:17Speaker 15: kind of Then eventually, when I grew up, got a
- 27:19Speaker 15: grunge band together in school and was playing three cord songs,
- 27:23Speaker 15: and it wasn't long after learning a whole bunch of
- 27:26Speaker 15: grunge songs until I started writing my own songs. But
- 27:29Speaker 15: I wasn't the singer. I was the guitarist and songwriter.
- 27:32Speaker 15: My friend Ben Griffiths was this gorgeous singing, gorgeous voice
- 27:36Speaker 15: and gorgeous guy to be honest, Ben, and he was
- 27:39Speaker 15: the front man of Your Dreams when we were a teenager,
- 27:42Speaker 15: especially for the.
- 27:43Speaker 9: Girls and stuff.
- 27:44Speaker 15: But yeah, and then in that scene we kind of
- 27:46Speaker 15: met Shaz who was from another school. But Shads the
- 27:48Speaker 15: Drama was in a kind of brick pop sort of band,
- 27:53Speaker 15: and they were kind of like pretty boys with a
- 27:55Speaker 15: female singer.
- 27:56Speaker 9: And then suddenly they were like the band to go to.
- 28:00Speaker 15: I don't know, all the girls would go to that
- 28:01Speaker 15: see them play, you know, because like there are these
- 28:03Speaker 15: pretty little indie boys, you know. And we were a
- 28:06Speaker 15: bit more grungy and stinky looking, but it was funny.
- 28:08Speaker 15: We'd never would have thought all those years later that
- 28:11Speaker 15: we would have joined forces, you know. When we finished
- 28:13Speaker 15: university eventually and came back to Essex, Chaz was like
- 28:18Speaker 15: and his mate Jim, who played bass with him, was like,
- 28:20Speaker 15: you wn to join up and do some stuff. And
- 28:23Speaker 15: then eventually Pete came and joined and we started this
- 28:26Speaker 15: band called Future of junior and we toured a lot
- 28:28Speaker 15: around like London particularly, and just played as much as possible,
- 28:32Speaker 15: and we made some really cool recordings by the end
- 28:34Speaker 15: of it, and like we were sort of took a
- 28:37Speaker 15: year out of school and thought this is it, you know,
- 28:39Speaker 15: we're going to do it, and we were young and
- 28:41Speaker 15: had a bit of a look about us and stuff.
- 28:43Speaker 15: But apparently the songs just weren't strong enough like that,
- 28:46Speaker 15: there weren't enough singles. Basically, it was the feedback from
- 28:49Speaker 15: the industry and the bass player left. We kind of thought, oh, well,
- 28:54Speaker 15: that's the end of that then, and then we sort
- 28:56Speaker 15: of slowly kind of got back into each other's lives.
- 28:58Speaker 15: Met keV the bass player, joined us, rebooted brand new songs,
- 29:03Speaker 15: and Boy kill Boy was kind of born from there.
- 29:05Speaker 4: When did you start playing guitar?
- 29:07Speaker 10: Then?
- 29:07Speaker 15: Well, it was weird because when I was in secondary school,
- 29:10Speaker 15: when I was about kind of thirteen, I just go
- 29:11Speaker 15: to house parties and it was a lot about dance
- 29:13Speaker 15: music at the time, especially in my area. The guys
- 29:16Speaker 15: would be listening to house and acid house and stuff
- 29:19Speaker 15: like that. And then one of the DJs played this
- 29:22Speaker 15: remix of a Hendrix Crosstown traffic remix with a big
- 29:25Speaker 15: break beat behind it. It was used on and I
- 29:28Speaker 15: believe izab or something, and I was like, this is cool.
- 29:32Speaker 15: What's that sound? And this guy who was also there,
- 29:34Speaker 15: who was a guitarist, was like, that's a guitar mate.
- 29:37Speaker 15: It was like, that sounds really amazing. He was like, well,
- 29:40Speaker 15: you don't you know, and he kind of and then
- 29:41Speaker 15: he sort of took me under his wing. He was
- 29:42Speaker 15: older than me, but he sort of kind of taught
- 29:45Speaker 15: me how to play really and then eventually I had
- 29:47Speaker 15: this quite a good ear for it, and the guitar
- 29:49Speaker 15: teacher was like, how are you picking this up so quickly?
- 29:52Speaker 9: It's a bit unusual.
- 29:52Speaker 15: And then and then we worked out maybe because when
- 29:54Speaker 15: I was very little, when I was about nine, I
- 29:57Speaker 15: was after boarding school and I one of the things
- 29:59Speaker 15: I had to do there was to learn the cello.
- 30:01Speaker 9: So you know, he was kind of making sense of that,
- 30:03Speaker 9: kind of going.
- 30:04Speaker 15: Oh, well, you probably worked you know, yeah, that probably
- 30:06Speaker 15: helped out your your journey a little bit with your
- 30:08Speaker 15: fingers and your you know, all that kind stuff. But
- 30:10Speaker 15: my dad always played acoustic guitar when we were little,
- 30:12Speaker 15: and when it came to like my birthday parties instead
- 30:15Speaker 15: of going to McDonald's and bowling or you know whatever
- 30:18Speaker 15: cool shit everyone really wanted to do, like laser tag
- 30:21Speaker 15: or whatever. It was like people had to come around
- 30:23Speaker 15: and listen to my dad play like Streets of London
- 30:28Speaker 15: songs about old Molly Malone and they were like, oh, great,
- 30:31Speaker 15: Chris's party is coming up. And so to be honest
- 30:34Speaker 15: with you, like he said, I remember him saying to
- 30:37Speaker 15: me when I was about eleven or twelve, it was like,
- 30:38Speaker 15: one day you'll be like, you'll be wearing flares and
- 30:40Speaker 15: you'll play the guitar just like me. Don't worry about it.
- 30:43Speaker 15: And yeah, I could never imagine it. But funny enough
- 30:45Speaker 15: that fashion came in. Man, the flares came in. I
- 30:48Speaker 15: was in a band, long hair, you know, this mid
- 30:51Speaker 15: teenager and Dad was like, I told you so, and
- 30:54Speaker 15: he used to let me. He gave me his flares
- 30:56Speaker 15: that he used to work back in the day. So
- 30:58Speaker 15: I was well made up. But yeah, mad crazy.
- 31:02Speaker 1: So future Junior, when you were sort of playing gee
- 31:04Speaker 1: said around London, have you got any sort of memorable
- 31:07Speaker 1: sports lots or any memorable gigs from that era? Oh?
- 31:11Speaker 9: Man, it was like one of the worst days of
- 31:13Speaker 9: my life. It was at the old what was it
- 31:17Speaker 9: called Me and Fiddler.
- 31:19Speaker 3: Yeah, and that was that was a real aspirational gig
- 31:24Speaker 3: to get and my my my dad sort of arranged
- 31:28Speaker 3: for this guy, Manny Elias that used to be Intos
- 31:30Speaker 3: for Fears and run a little studio around the corner
- 31:33Speaker 3: and got.
- 31:33Speaker 15: Him to come along, and some industry people were there
- 31:36Speaker 15: and we were really like this is like the pinnacle
- 31:38Speaker 15: of our of our time. We really were running out
- 31:40Speaker 15: of time in our year out of other guys in
- 31:43Speaker 15: the band were like wondering whether they should go to
- 31:45Speaker 15: university or not. And you know, it was like kind
- 31:46Speaker 15: of crunch time, and there's a lot hanging on this gig.
- 31:49Speaker 15: We'd hired a coach to get people from Essex out there,
- 31:52Speaker 15: which cost us a fortune. You know, it was all
- 31:54Speaker 15: just like mental really, it's like it's so much pressure.
- 31:57Speaker 15: We and I broke three strings in a row, like
- 32:00Speaker 15: three strings, like bam bam, trying trying, trying like this,
- 32:04Speaker 15: and I was so pissed off that I've actually just
- 32:06Speaker 15: walked off stage, which I had never done before and
- 32:09Speaker 15: never done since. But you can imagine, you know, me
- 32:12Speaker 15: like scrabbling around trying to make it work, and then
- 32:14Speaker 15: another one's gone, and then another one's gone, and there's
- 32:16Speaker 15: a couple of songs left in the set, and I
- 32:18Speaker 15: just walked off the rest of the guys like what
- 32:20Speaker 15: do we do here?
- 32:20Speaker 9: You know?
- 32:21Speaker 15: And then a mate of my run backstage was like, Chris,
- 32:24Speaker 15: what was going on there? And I was like, don't
- 32:26Speaker 15: want to talk to you.
- 32:27Speaker 9: You know. He gave me a pint and was like,
- 32:28Speaker 9: sorry to see that. Man. That was that was awkward.
- 32:31Speaker 9: By the way, Ray Davis was in the audience. Did
- 32:33Speaker 9: you see him? And I was just like, oh, that's wonderful. Thanks.
- 32:38Speaker 15: And being so young, I mean, we're only like nineteen,
- 32:41Speaker 15: you know, it was just like it was devastating, to
- 32:43Speaker 15: be honest. And you know, I went and spoke to
- 32:45Speaker 15: this guy, Manny afterwards, and he said, listen, man, you're
- 32:47Speaker 15: not there yet. You know, you're not there yet, but
- 32:49Speaker 15: did all this stuff is good experience for you, because
- 32:51Speaker 15: it's all there to challenge you.
- 32:52Speaker 9: And I was like, very much.
- 32:54Speaker 15: And you know, it wasn't long after there that the
- 32:57Speaker 15: boys sort of peeled off one by one and he
- 32:59Speaker 15: applied to off the university and that was and that
- 33:02Speaker 15: was well, actually, that wasn't the future of what am
- 33:05Speaker 15: I talking about?
- 33:05Speaker 9: That was kind of that was enough.
- 33:07Speaker 15: That was my school band called Space Dog, and then
- 33:12Speaker 15: Yeah exactly and then Future of Junior, which was my
- 33:15Speaker 15: band when we sort of reconnected after university. Was We're
- 33:18Speaker 15: just doing all those gigs around London over and over again,
- 33:21Speaker 15: Dublin Castle, you know, a buffalo by, you know, just
- 33:24Speaker 15: smashing it, smash it, smash it. And it was just
- 33:26Speaker 15: like people would come, like there was a guy called
- 33:29Speaker 15: flash Tailor that used to come and watch us, and
- 33:31Speaker 15: he was just like waiting those jazs as well. Like
- 33:35Speaker 15: basically some people were like kind of had their eye
- 33:37Speaker 15: on us. We were just waiting for us to write
- 33:39Speaker 15: some pop songs basically, some like catchy singles. And eventually
- 33:43Speaker 15: our bass player got kind of pinched, got got pinched
- 33:48Speaker 15: by another band that we were really good friends with
- 33:50Speaker 15: and we're in our little community and they got they
- 33:53Speaker 15: just got signed to Ireland and they needed a new
- 33:55Speaker 15: bass player, so they pinched hours off of us, and
- 33:59Speaker 15: we all had a big falling out and we were
- 34:01Speaker 15: so gutted that we we kind of we broke up
- 34:04Speaker 15: there and then it's like that was the end of it.
- 34:07Speaker 9: We just thought, well, it's over.
- 34:08Speaker 15: You know, lost our bass player, it's over, and we've
- 34:11Speaker 15: lost the race, you know, it is all that kind
- 34:12Speaker 15: of stuff. It just felt like, well, you know, you
- 34:16Speaker 15: might have to rethink. So had a bit of time
- 34:18Speaker 15: out and then and then eventually we realized we're missing
- 34:21Speaker 15: it too much, really, and I think we realized when
- 34:24Speaker 15: we got back together again, me and Shaz and Pete
- 34:28Speaker 15: keyboard player, we got in touch with me said look,
- 34:30Speaker 15: we do want to we want to keep doing stuff
- 34:31Speaker 15: for any old reason other than just just to enjoy it.
- 34:35Speaker 15: And I sort of said this time, I'm not like
- 34:37Speaker 15: going to I'm not going to overthink what we're doing.
- 34:39Speaker 15: I'm not going to try and fit into anything. I'm
- 34:41Speaker 15: just literally going to play a song that's going to
- 34:43Speaker 15: be this vibe and then another song, Like I just
- 34:45Speaker 15: want to get my songs out there, and if you're
- 34:48Speaker 15: happy for that to be a bit of a no
- 34:49Speaker 15: rule supply thing, then let's just do it. And it's weird,
- 34:52Speaker 15: isn't it, Because as soon as you sort of don't
- 34:54Speaker 15: really care about what anyone thinks, then it all starts
- 34:57Speaker 15: to kind of fit into place. Like we did our
- 35:00Speaker 15: first gig in the water Rats, which which was which,
- 35:04Speaker 15: which wasn't going to be great for us because we
- 35:07Speaker 15: had a relationship with the water Rats, a really good
- 35:09Speaker 15: relationship with the water Ats. But they said they had
- 35:11Speaker 15: to cancel our support, our support slot show. We didn't
- 35:18Speaker 15: want to be supporting any big bands at all. We
- 35:20Speaker 15: wanted to be supporting very small bands because we didn't
- 35:23Speaker 15: want anyone to know about us for a while. And
- 35:25Speaker 15: then they were like, no, no, no, there's this really
- 35:27Speaker 15: big night coming up.
- 35:29Speaker 9: You've got to go.
- 35:30Speaker 15: It's going to be really big, it's going to be
- 35:31Speaker 15: crawling with industry. It's literally like a golden ticket. You
- 35:33Speaker 15: cannot turn it down. And we were like, we haven't
- 35:35Speaker 15: done a gig yet, you know, like we literally totally
- 35:39Speaker 15: don't know our arsen our elbow, and they're, well, listen,
- 35:42Speaker 15: this is the last of it.
- 35:43Speaker 9: You have to take this gig. So anyway, we took it, and.
- 35:45Speaker 15: That gig was was hard, was hard fire, hardly a
- 35:50Speaker 15: water Rats and they had just done like that a
- 35:53Speaker 15: single release. I don't even know was it even their
- 35:54Speaker 15: album release, I can't remember, but anyway, probably single release.
- 35:58Speaker 15: If it was in the water Rats, I don't know,
- 35:59Speaker 15: but anyway, and they were lovely guys and they were
- 36:02Speaker 15: very welcome to us, and like you know, and we
- 36:05Speaker 15: played and we fitted in kind of weirdly well like
- 36:09Speaker 15: you know, but really got to see on stage that
- 36:11Speaker 15: sort of punchy, poppy sound. And then then weirdly later
- 36:16Speaker 15: on well actually no, not weirdly, because in that venue,
- 36:19Speaker 15: then the agent's Hard Fire agents saw us and we're like,
- 36:23Speaker 15: you know, we need to get these guys on board.
- 36:25Speaker 15: And then management, not hard Fire's management, but another management
- 36:29Speaker 15: company was there and they picked us up very quickly
- 36:32Speaker 15: as well, and so before you knew, it was like
- 36:34Speaker 15: suddenly we had management and an agent. And then the
- 36:37Speaker 15: people who were there who were friends with us, sort
- 36:39Speaker 15: of from Future of Junior for example, someone like Flash Taylor,
- 36:43Speaker 15: who was with Sony Publishing. He then came to see
- 36:46Speaker 15: us as Boy kill Boy and was like, yes, it's
- 36:48Speaker 15: like you're ready now, like now you're cooking kind of thing. Yeah,
- 36:52Speaker 15: I mean, it's sort of organically fit into place rather quickly,
- 36:54Speaker 15: and then eventually we had this sort of like kind
- 36:58Speaker 15: of slight bidding war between Atlantic Universal and that was
- 37:01Speaker 15: a lot of interesting journey in itself, but yeah, we
- 37:04Speaker 15: we sort of chose to go, not forgetting our fierce
- 37:08Speaker 15: Panda relationship. Obviously, that was where we had our first single,
- 37:12Speaker 15: and you know, that was kind of a real dip
- 37:15Speaker 15: in the ocean, dipping our toes in the ocean, because
- 37:17Speaker 15: that was then suddenly getting us radio play, and it
- 37:19Speaker 15: was like suddenly mates being like I heard you on
- 37:21Speaker 15: XFM and you know, all this kind of stuff. And
- 37:25Speaker 15: suddenly I got a phone call from Zane Lowe from
- 37:28Speaker 15: out of nowhere saying like I've just heard you, you know,
- 37:32Speaker 15: like I've heard that you're the singer of the band
- 37:33Speaker 15: I used to work at MTV years ago, and I
- 37:36Speaker 15: didn't even he didn't know that I was the singer,
- 37:38Speaker 15: and I hadn't been in touch with him, so he
- 37:40Speaker 15: was just like, why didn't you tell me?
- 37:42Speaker 9: So he was like, may have been playing your record, like,
- 37:45Speaker 9: which is really good news.
- 37:46Speaker 15: And so yeah, you know, like we just started sort
- 37:48Speaker 15: of having some really good news, like just getting bits
- 37:51Speaker 15: out there and the word got out kind of thing.
- 37:54Speaker 1: Fantastic get the water right to say, with the hard Fire,
- 37:57Speaker 1: you guys would have been a mega gig.
- 37:58Speaker 2: They're two great bands.
- 38:00Speaker 9: Thanks man.
- 38:00Speaker 15: Well, we end up supporting them a couple of little
- 38:02Speaker 15: support slots years later. Yeah, you know, so I thought
- 38:06Speaker 15: they probably thought we were hanging on their coat tails
- 38:07Speaker 15: a little bit, you know, but they're you know, they're
- 38:10Speaker 15: got really good lads. And we went to go and
- 38:12Speaker 15: see their reunion show in Kentish Town a few years
- 38:15Speaker 15: ago and it kind of got us back together going
- 38:17Speaker 15: a little bit. And yeah, they're you know, still they're
- 38:20Speaker 15: still doing it. I haven't heard the new stuff. I've
- 38:22Speaker 15: had a little clip of one of their new songs.
- 38:24Speaker 15: It sounds really really punchy, like really powerful.
- 38:26Speaker 2: So brilliant, brilliant stuff.
- 38:28Speaker 4: So going back to in those early days, was it
- 38:31Speaker 4: you know, and obviously you were writing, was there like
- 38:33Speaker 4: one song maybe that you felt, oh that, well, I
- 38:37Speaker 4: think we've got we've found our sound, you know.
- 38:41Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 38:41Speaker 15: Yeah, Well the first song that we did with Boy
- 38:45Speaker 15: Cure Boy was a song called Number One that is
- 38:48Speaker 15: on the B side of some sort and it's really
- 38:52Speaker 15: like erratic and like a bit schizophrenic kind of sounding,
- 38:58Speaker 15: and it's very dissonant and it's got loads of sort
- 38:59Speaker 15: of wonky moments to it, and we really got off
- 39:03Speaker 15: on that and we were like, you know, this is
- 39:05Speaker 15: really this is really fun rather than just sort of
- 39:08Speaker 15: like just romantic chord use and stuff. It was like,
- 39:11Speaker 15: this is going to be like we should definitely keep
- 39:13Speaker 15: going down this.
- 39:13Speaker 10: Road, singing something.
- 39:29Speaker 7: This sniping.
- 40:14Speaker 15: And just thinking like everything needs to be slightly like
- 40:17Speaker 15: have a slight quirk to it, if possible, whether it's
- 40:20Speaker 15: just like a key change that goes on, or whether
- 40:22Speaker 15: it's like the rhythm or something like that, and so
- 40:25Speaker 15: that's real punchiness.
- 40:27Speaker 9: We got like kind of addicted to.
- 40:29Speaker 15: Susie came along and was just like one of those
- 40:32Speaker 15: little moments where you're like, you know, how does this happen?
- 40:35Speaker 15: This is wicked, this is well catching, you know, and
- 40:38Speaker 15: I keep thinking like maybe I've accidentally sort of sort
- 40:42Speaker 15: of sponged this or somewhere else.
- 40:44Speaker 9: I might have done.
- 40:44Speaker 3: I hope not.
- 40:46Speaker 15: I mean sometimes I kind of listen to things and go, oh, yeah,
- 40:48Speaker 15: that does sound a bit like that, and maybe that
- 40:50Speaker 15: kind of has the same sort of melody as that.
- 40:52Speaker 15: But ultimately when we played it live, it's like you
- 40:55Speaker 15: can kind of tell the room just sort of changes
- 40:58Speaker 15: temperature and shape and you know the dynamics, and you
- 41:01Speaker 15: kind of go, all right, this.
- 41:03Speaker 9: Is this is what we should be doing.
- 41:11Speaker 8: This is not a move.
- 41:14Speaker 16: Things are seeing the same as a very video I
- 41:17Speaker 16: started back the movement he makes to use a very
- 41:21Speaker 16: nice super suitor.
- 41:27Speaker 14: With Amy John shot it talk to a suz I
- 41:33Speaker 14: con sad to Amoni dont and they said, don't let
- 41:38Speaker 14: me down. They said, don't let me down. Le chapter
- 41:49Speaker 14: captain count down.
- 41:51Speaker 7: To any supportment your counter really know what that's sunny,
- 42:17Speaker 7: fool like you around sign on to make you read it.
- 42:23Speaker 7: I never want to do.
- 42:29Speaker 15: And of course as soon as you get a single
- 42:31Speaker 15: like that, then you're everyone around you it's like, write
- 42:33Speaker 15: more of that, more of that. Of course you know
- 42:35Speaker 15: they want more of that, and you know, like we
- 42:38Speaker 15: definitely didn't follow the same patterns as that song, but yeah,
- 42:42Speaker 15: I kind of got the idea a bit more now.
- 42:44Speaker 15: So Future of Junior was like had loads of creative
- 42:47Speaker 15: moments and probably some like dynamics that were cool and
- 42:51Speaker 15: fun to show off about and all this kind of stuff.
- 42:53Speaker 15: Maybe a bit songs are a bit long, like remember
- 42:55Speaker 15: it's now it's like, don't bor us get to the
- 42:57Speaker 15: chorus and just try and keep it a bit more
- 42:59Speaker 15: like direct to the point.
- 43:00Speaker 9: And we kind of enjoyed that challenge.
- 43:02Speaker 15: It's like it's kind of like you know, only being
- 43:05Speaker 15: equipped with a certain few tools, and like the keyboards
- 43:09Speaker 15: really critical, like we could have the piano there, but
- 43:12Speaker 15: the strings and the synth were kind of like our
- 43:15Speaker 15: main tool palette, our paint palette kind of thing there,
- 43:18Speaker 15: and we're just thinking, well, if we stick to the
- 43:20Speaker 15: same sort of palette, then it will all start to
- 43:22Speaker 15: sound like a group of songs hopefully, you know.
- 43:25Speaker 9: That was kind of the idea.
- 43:26Speaker 15: But yeah, like you know, then sibyl Sin came along,
- 43:30Speaker 15: and sibyl Sin just sounds like nothing out of nothing
- 43:32Speaker 15: else that we'd done before, and almost a bit kind
- 43:35Speaker 15: of emo e and dark and gothic, and that was
- 43:38Speaker 15: probably directly influenced from eighties Matchbox Beeline Disaster for me.
- 43:45Speaker 15: And the vocals even are a bit kind of like
- 43:48Speaker 15: a sort of probably like a really poor invitation of that,
- 43:52Speaker 15: like like guys amazing, astounding vocals. But yeah, so like
- 44:00Speaker 15: you know, I guess it was just starting to to
- 44:03Speaker 15: amalgamate the things that I was listening to and just
- 44:05Speaker 15: going through that set of tools and just seeing if
- 44:08Speaker 15: we could kind of make any sense of cohesion.
- 44:11Speaker 4: You know, because civil scene that I mean, there's a
- 44:14Speaker 4: great song, but also as you were saying earlier, got
- 44:18Speaker 4: on to FIFA. I mean, how does a song like
- 44:20Speaker 4: that get onto I.
- 44:22Speaker 15: Don't know, other than thanks very much to Flash Taylor
- 44:25Speaker 15: and his mob over a Sony Records, Sony Sorry, Sony Publishing,
- 44:30Speaker 15: and I guess they did have like the link to
- 44:33Speaker 15: PlayStation and things like that, So Sony, you know, so
- 44:36Speaker 15: maybe maybe we're were were we were lucky, and we
- 44:40Speaker 15: made the right decision to kind of kind of help
- 44:43Speaker 15: let those guys lead us. And like I say, for Flash,
- 44:46Speaker 15: who was really like already part of our sort of family,
- 44:49Speaker 15: even though nothing had been linked business wise up until
- 44:54Speaker 15: that point, but we felt quite passionate to keep it,
- 44:57Speaker 15: you know, team based if we could, you know. Mean,
- 45:01Speaker 15: so we were really really tough that Sony wanted to
- 45:04Speaker 15: have us, and they were the first people to sort
- 45:06Speaker 15: of put the money down, and that enabled us to
- 45:09Speaker 15: leave our jobs.
- 45:10Speaker 9: I was working in a wagon mama at the time.
- 45:13Speaker 15: Pete was working in a post room and a big
- 45:16Speaker 15: company and so he got to print outloads of our
- 45:18Speaker 15: flyers for free and send those.
- 45:20Speaker 9: Out for us, you know, So we were still all
- 45:22Speaker 9: trying to make it work.
- 45:23Speaker 15: But of course, as soon as you get to you know,
- 45:26Speaker 15: there's a point, isn't there where you kind of go, right, it's.
- 45:29Speaker 9: A business time. Now, let's let's let's step it up.
- 45:32Speaker 15: And I remember the management saying, like, you know, go
- 45:35Speaker 15: away and have have a week of holiday because when
- 45:39Speaker 15: you come back, you aren't going to have a day
- 45:41Speaker 15: off for as long as I.
- 45:42Speaker 9: Am working with you. Basically, that's my promise to you.
- 45:45Speaker 9: I'm afraid.
- 45:46Speaker 15: And so I went to Thailand on my own, which
- 45:50Speaker 15: is the weirdest thing to be spent all this money
- 45:52Speaker 15: because suddenly we'd had like a bit of money in
- 45:54Speaker 15: our pocket. And I just remember getting like boats and
- 45:56Speaker 15: boats and planes and just sat at this really posh
- 45:59Speaker 15: end of the beach where probably all the twats were
- 46:01Speaker 15: like me, you know, rather than one of those nice
- 46:04Speaker 15: little cheap bungalows.
- 46:04Speaker 9: I was like, I thought, I've got some money, I
- 46:06Speaker 9: spend it on a nice fancy one.
- 46:08Speaker 15: But yeah, no, it was it was quite right. As
- 46:11Speaker 15: soon as you got back, it was just non stop.
- 46:14Speaker 15: And we were in Pete the other day sent us
- 46:19Speaker 15: like a document like Outlook documents, I don't know, some
- 46:22Speaker 15: sort of thing, and it was like all of our
- 46:24Speaker 15: tour dates for like a couple of years and it
- 46:26Speaker 15: was just it was amazing to look back over it
- 46:29Speaker 15: and just go, wow, that was we really say goodbye
- 46:33Speaker 15: to everyone, you know, like we said goodbye, and which
- 46:37Speaker 15: was a challenge in many ways because obviously, you know,
- 46:40Speaker 15: it's pretty hard keeping relationships going when you're in the
- 46:43Speaker 15: middle of that sort of a new experience and a
- 46:46Speaker 15: new life, but also just friends and family, and you know,
- 46:50Speaker 15: you stop getting invites to things after a while, you know,
- 46:53Speaker 15: because you start, you know, you're replying firstly with yeah, mate,
- 46:56Speaker 15: so I'm really sorry, we're going to be doing this,
- 46:58Speaker 15: and then it's like, well, I'm booking you in for
- 47:00Speaker 15: six months time, so now you've got to make that
- 47:01Speaker 15: and you're like, I can't book anything in it. I
- 47:04Speaker 15: can't commit to anything because I just can't, you know.
- 47:07Speaker 9: And it was weird.
- 47:09Speaker 15: So eventually people sort of not not cut you off
- 47:11Speaker 15: in a horrible way, but they you know, they're really
- 47:13Speaker 15: proud and.
- 47:13Speaker 9: Happy for you.
- 47:14Speaker 15: But and then when you come home, you come off
- 47:17Speaker 15: of a tour and you're just like buzzing because you're
- 47:21Speaker 15: obviously just been on tour and you know, being all
- 47:23Speaker 15: over the place and met this person and that person,
- 47:25Speaker 15: been partying here and probably you know, becoming a bit
- 47:29Speaker 15: unhealthy and all that kind of stuff. And then you
- 47:31Speaker 15: come home and your mates are just living life as
- 47:33Speaker 15: you know, quite rightly, just getting on with things. I
- 47:34Speaker 15: don't want to roll out a red carpet for you
- 47:36Speaker 15: on a Tuesday night just because you've got off a
- 47:38Speaker 15: tour bus at ten o'clock. You know who cares, you know,
- 47:42Speaker 15: so you have to suddenly hit the bottom again and
- 47:44Speaker 15: go all right, yeah, I need to get my shit
- 47:45Speaker 15: together a bit here. You know, you're living a bit
- 47:48Speaker 15: of a strange life and getting used to it.
- 47:50Speaker 2: I was just say talking about Gee. You talk about Gee.
- 47:52Speaker 1: I saw you on the Enemy New Music tour supporting
- 47:55Speaker 1: Maximo Park and the Rakes. Yeah, and I was on
- 47:58Speaker 1: that tour though, well you mentioned hard Fire. There was
- 48:00Speaker 1: maximog Park obviously, the cribs and the loads of the bands.
- 48:03Speaker 1: I think that caming apart from hard for there are
- 48:06Speaker 1: any of the bands that used to hang out.
- 48:07Speaker 9: With a little bit, yeah mate.
- 48:09Speaker 15: And it was absolutely amazing because suddenly like we had
- 48:11Speaker 15: this tour manager that was like he had a rule
- 48:14Speaker 15: that we had to have like a seriously good tour
- 48:16Speaker 15: bus and it suited him. But I mean, to be
- 48:18Speaker 15: honest with us, we didn't know any different. So we
- 48:20Speaker 15: turned up to this tour, this enemy tour, with this
- 48:23Speaker 15: like unbelievably brand new sort of traveling strip club, kind
- 48:29Speaker 15: of like epic space age bus, and they're all like
- 48:34Speaker 15: sort of you know, just about managing yeah, and just well, no,
- 48:38Speaker 15: not just about doing anything. I mean they're all like
- 48:40Speaker 15: amazingly successful, but quite rightly. We're also recognizing that tour
- 48:44Speaker 15: buses were probably the right thing to be doing, but
- 48:46Speaker 15: maybe you know, being realistic about and sensible about it.
- 48:50Speaker 15: So we looked like a right bunch of nobeds when
- 48:52Speaker 15: we turned up in this massive thing. I've never heard
- 48:55Speaker 15: of us, But yeah, no, I mean that was that
- 48:57Speaker 15: was a bit of fortune. Really, I've meant before, but
- 49:00Speaker 15: it was nine backouts. I think we're meant to be
- 49:02Speaker 15: doing that tour. I think they were ill or something
- 49:06Speaker 15: like that. They had some hard stuff going on, so
- 49:09Speaker 15: and we we were sort of called up. So it
- 49:11Speaker 15: was very very lucky and for us that the enemy
- 49:16Speaker 15: saw something in us. And yeah, and then eventually we're
- 49:19Speaker 15: sort of headlining our own tours, you know, and you know,
- 49:21Speaker 15: getting to know some of these guys really down to
- 49:24Speaker 15: her very English and it was great, you know, like
- 49:27Speaker 15: the Rakes and like say, Maximum Park accidentally walked in
- 49:31Speaker 15: to the singer in the toilet ruin once and you know,
- 49:34Speaker 15: he didn't look very happy at all about that. Gave
- 49:36Speaker 15: me a pretty serious dressing down, and it was like,
- 49:39Speaker 15: you know, we need to earn our stripes.
- 49:40Speaker 10: Here we are.
- 49:41Speaker 15: There is a pecking order and we are not. There
- 49:45Speaker 15: was a bit like who are you? You know, they
- 49:47Speaker 15: all kind of knew each other quite quite well, like
- 49:49Speaker 15: future heads and you know, those kind of little they're
- 49:51Speaker 15: also they've all been festivaling it before and they kind
- 49:54Speaker 15: of knew the knew the vibe, and I guess we
- 49:57Speaker 15: kind of didn't really fit in so much with that
- 50:01Speaker 15: sort of sound, that vibe. Perhaps they all kind of
- 50:04Speaker 15: came from a similar sort of school, didn't they think
- 50:06Speaker 15: about it? Like yeah, very sort of jangly, minimal guitars,
- 50:11Speaker 15: quite fast, quite energetic, very punky, very like raw and
- 50:15Speaker 15: very like DIY sounding, you know, and then we were
- 50:18Speaker 15: coming at things with a bit more of a sort
- 50:20Speaker 15: of grandiose aspirations perhaps, you know. So I'm not quite
- 50:24Speaker 15: sure what they made of us, but they're all very
- 50:26Speaker 15: nice to us. And we had a that was very
- 50:29Speaker 15: exciting tour for us, and it kind of all blew
- 50:30Speaker 15: up a bit from there.
- 50:31Speaker 4: Yeah, seemed a bit almost following on from them right
- 50:35Speaker 4: back for the water Rats, you seem to have built
- 50:37Speaker 4: quite a bit of momentum really quickly, which then, you know,
- 50:40Speaker 4: obviously then led to Civilian being recorded and then making
- 50:44Speaker 4: the top twenty. I just wondered, have I got it
- 50:46Speaker 4: right in that that process seemed to be really fast?
- 50:50Speaker 15: It felt Yeah, I think it felt like that for
- 50:54Speaker 15: bystanders and spectators and people were in the industry were like, oh,
- 50:58Speaker 15: the hang on a minute.
- 50:58Speaker 9: What's going on? Who are these guys?
- 51:00Speaker 15: And how they kind of convercit But if you kind
- 51:02Speaker 15: of imagine for us, we'd played together apart from the
- 51:04Speaker 15: bass player, we played together in a band for about
- 51:07Speaker 15: four or five years before that, you know, so like
- 51:11Speaker 15: people knew who we were on the scene because we
- 51:14Speaker 15: were out and about everywhere supporting everyone. You know, it
- 51:17Speaker 15: was like we were kind of considered to be sort
- 51:20Speaker 15: of they were understood to be kind of players in
- 51:22Speaker 15: that scene. But yeah, I think you're right it when
- 51:24Speaker 15: it did when we suddenly started getting our team around us,
- 51:27Speaker 15: and then when we when Fierce Panda picked us up,
- 51:29Speaker 15: and Simon was really keen, and that for us was
- 51:32Speaker 15: like go, go go, you know. And I think that
- 51:34Speaker 15: there was this sense of like we you know, not
- 51:36Speaker 15: just like we need to rush it otherwise it won't work,
- 51:39Speaker 15: but it's like, you are ready, let's just get let's
- 51:42Speaker 15: just get the last few songs written and then let's
- 51:45Speaker 15: do it.
- 51:45Speaker 6: You know.
- 51:46Speaker 15: So that early tour we wouldn't have been necessarily all
- 51:48Speaker 15: the same songs that would have been on the album.
- 51:50Speaker 15: I can't quite remember the timeline, to be honest with you,
- 51:52Speaker 15: but you know, I don't think the album was necessarily
- 51:55Speaker 15: out on that first tour.
- 51:56Speaker 9: Maybe just some singles and stuff.
- 51:58Speaker 1: I think when I saw you, I think Susie was
- 52:01Speaker 1: out a lot of You another song which we ended
- 52:03Speaker 1: upon Feefa as well, but yeah, I think that was
- 52:05Speaker 1: the only single that was out at that point in time.
- 52:07Speaker 9: Yeah choos now, yeah, yeah, that must be it. Yeah,
- 52:09Speaker 9: so we're still just sort of kind of finding our feet.
- 52:11Speaker 15: And sometimes I'd be sent off to go and write
- 52:14Speaker 15: the last couple of songs and you know, to kind
- 52:16Speaker 15: of get some get some new material together, and we'd
- 52:19Speaker 15: all we'd all be sort of be together, and then
- 52:22Speaker 15: maybe it'll come to a point where we've sort of
- 52:24Speaker 15: reached limit of what we can all do creatively together.
- 52:27Speaker 15: Then I'd be left with the remnants, and then I'd
- 52:29Speaker 15: sort of put together and they kind of finalize the
- 52:32Speaker 15: songs and record them as demos just myself, and then
- 52:36Speaker 15: and then everyone would come back, and then I'd go
- 52:38Speaker 15: right here, you know, this is this is the hook,
- 52:40Speaker 15: and this is the bridge, and you know, like this
- 52:42Speaker 15: is the kind of product as it were, and then
- 52:44Speaker 15: everyone would sort of come back in.
- 52:45Speaker 9: They'd play their parts.
- 52:47Speaker 15: Pete, Pete would play the keys ten times better than me,
- 52:49Speaker 15: has to play the drums, sentimes, let me and bass,
- 52:51Speaker 15: et cetera. And then it would sound then like a
- 52:54Speaker 15: boy killed boy song. So when we had the album ready,
- 52:57Speaker 15: it was just like an absolute dream to go down
- 53:00Speaker 15: to Sawmills with John Cornfield and get this album recorded
- 53:06Speaker 15: with with with him who recorded some of our heroes,
- 53:09Speaker 15: you know, and then it was all under one roof,
- 53:12Speaker 15: you know, rather than always like doing a little bit
- 53:13Speaker 15: of a single here and that producer kind of made
- 53:15Speaker 15: it sound a bit like that, and then over here
- 53:17Speaker 15: and then that guy was kind of made make it
- 53:19Speaker 15: go a bit further down down that road, and you know,
- 53:21Speaker 15: we had like Ccenzo, Townsend and Stevens Street and we
- 53:24Speaker 15: were like really kind of fans of their work, but
- 53:26Speaker 15: we gave it a go, man, you know, we gave
- 53:28Speaker 15: it a go with them, and it just didn't it
- 53:31Speaker 15: didn't kind of feel right like we got we got
- 53:33Speaker 15: Ccenzo did the mix and sent it back to us,
- 53:36Speaker 15: and it had like he'd done tons of stuff on it,
- 53:39Speaker 15: like he played loads of synths on it and gave
- 53:40Speaker 15: it back to us with loads and loads of editing,
- 53:43Speaker 15: massive amounts of anything, but also like loads of extra
- 53:46Speaker 15: parts that he'd put on and twisted things up. And
- 53:48Speaker 15: I guess that's kind of his job as a producer.
- 53:51Speaker 15: And it to kind of go like this is the
- 53:52Speaker 15: vibe that I think it should go in. But we
- 53:54Speaker 15: felt immediately like yeah, it sounded really cool, but like
- 53:57Speaker 15: I think, maybe you're going to town in your own
- 53:59Speaker 15: way rather than in our way. And yeah, so it's
- 54:02Speaker 15: weird making those decisions, you know, like Stephen Street, no thanks, wow,
- 54:06Speaker 15: you know, like cheese, you know, like like the Smith.
- 54:11Speaker 15: So then when John Cornfield came up as a as
- 54:13Speaker 15: an option, we were like, oh, yeah, that's a wicked idea,
- 54:16Speaker 15: and we did.
- 54:17Speaker 9: We did run songs to him and it was just like, yes,
- 54:19Speaker 9: this is it. You know.
- 54:20Speaker 15: It had more punchy, rocky sort of sound to it,
- 54:23Speaker 15: and I guess that's where we steered a bit further
- 54:25Speaker 15: away from just being a kind of a pop pop
- 54:28Speaker 15: indie guitar band to a sort of rock indie band.
- 54:32Speaker 9: I guess I don't know, that's.
- 54:37Speaker 11: The understand just because i'.
- 55:00Speaker 7: That's so.
- 55:04Speaker 4: Sad, because because obviously that you then had, you know,
- 55:43Speaker 4: you've you've moved record companies a few times and post
- 55:46Speaker 4: Civilian that must have meant I don't know, did it
- 55:49Speaker 4: put any pressure on you then to record Stars in
- 55:53Speaker 4: the Sea? Was there was? There was there pressure there?
- 55:56Speaker 9: Yeah, you're right, man, Yeah, because there was.
- 55:58Speaker 15: You know, well after after we were with Fierce Panda,
- 56:01Speaker 15: then we were looking into maybe Ireland and we were
- 56:04Speaker 15: sort of flirting with some recordings with them as well
- 56:06Speaker 15: at some point, and then eventually when we went with
- 56:10Speaker 15: Universal with.
- 56:12Speaker 9: A label there, Vertigo.
- 56:15Speaker 15: We sort of had a good relationship with those guys,
- 56:18Speaker 15: but a lot of it was kind of in house,
- 56:20Speaker 15: Like the press side of things was in the house,
- 56:23Speaker 15: and like I don't know, like it just kind of
- 56:26Speaker 15: felt like the actual product itself was like being talked
- 56:29Speaker 15: about and meetings. You go to big fancy meetings and
- 56:32Speaker 15: like the Universal Record Label is like, you know, coming
- 56:35Speaker 15: to the.
- 56:35Speaker 9: Right and we're going to talk about how we're going
- 56:36Speaker 9: to sell this one, and you know, looking at the
- 56:38Speaker 9: video and what the video is going to be like.
- 56:39Speaker 15: And it was already exciting with the artwork and sort
- 56:41Speaker 15: of choosing who's going to do the artwork and for
- 56:43Speaker 15: us and things like that. But it did feel a
- 56:45Speaker 15: little bit like we've got kind of things kind of
- 56:48Speaker 15: got a little bit kind of maybe carried away from
- 56:51Speaker 15: where we were as people, you know, and I totally
- 56:54Speaker 15: stand by you know, some of the decisions we've made
- 56:57Speaker 15: creatively was to sort of avoid just copy what the
- 57:00Speaker 15: other East London bands were doing. You know, we wanted
- 57:03Speaker 15: to establish our own kind of character and stuff. But
- 57:07Speaker 15: when it came to the second album, we really wanted
- 57:09Speaker 15: to sort of bring things back to basics a little
- 57:12Speaker 15: bit and maybe kind of get our character on our
- 57:14Speaker 15: personality out there a little bit more. But also musically
- 57:18Speaker 15: we were sort of kind of growing up a little
- 57:20Speaker 15: bit probably, and it's sort of like that cliche, isn't it.
- 57:23Speaker 15: The second album is sort of like perhaps for us,
- 57:26Speaker 15: it was like a bit more kind of pensive and
- 57:28Speaker 15: bit more mature, And although there were some songs on
- 57:31Speaker 15: it that just kind of follow suit to Susie and
- 57:34Speaker 15: those kinds of songs, it wasn't like sort of fast
- 57:37Speaker 15: indie guitar pop album. And besides, at the time, like
- 57:41Speaker 15: we had meetings with our plugger, for example, Kate, who
- 57:44Speaker 15: was coming back to us with with sort of terrible news,
- 57:47Speaker 15: kind of saying, I've just come back from Radio one
- 57:50Speaker 15: and they've just said, like there is no playlisting anymore
- 57:54Speaker 15: for guitar bands, you know, And this is this is
- 57:56Speaker 15: like halfway through we were like finishing our albums. Like
- 57:58Speaker 15: what like they're just saying point blank they like, don't
- 58:02Speaker 15: come back with guitar bands. Only come back with with
- 58:05Speaker 15: hip hop, with with dance with pop or rap music.
- 58:11Speaker 15: That like, do not come back with guitar bands. I mean,
- 58:13Speaker 15: you know, maybe Arctic Monkeys, do you know what I mean?
- 58:15Speaker 9: But like, you know, and and it was like she
- 58:19Speaker 9: was like I don't.
- 58:19Speaker 15: Know, Like I mean, I don't know where to go
- 58:21Speaker 15: with it because you know, they literally won't listen to it,
- 58:24Speaker 15: you know, and it was kind of like the world
- 58:26Speaker 15: sort of started to fall apart around by ankles, you know,
- 58:29Speaker 15: like suddenly you'd get the front cover of like mainstream
- 58:33Speaker 15: newspapers sort of telling you this is you know, you
- 58:36Speaker 15: are downloading from LimeWire and you knowed how to get
- 58:40Speaker 15: to this website, and we're going to print what website is,
- 58:42Speaker 15: and and it just became so mainstream. When we came
- 58:44Speaker 15: to the second album, like we were just sort of
- 58:46Speaker 15: we kind of did this well. The last tour we
- 58:49Speaker 15: called it was like in the Trenches tour basically, it
- 58:51Speaker 15: was like we just need to get out far and
- 58:53Speaker 15: wide and play to as many people as possible and
- 58:54Speaker 15: just hope that they buy the record. Then we're in
- 58:57Speaker 15: like an Inverness I think it was in and we'd
- 59:01Speaker 15: done this gig and they messed up like that we
- 59:04Speaker 15: should have been in the smaller venue, like sold out
- 59:07Speaker 15: the smaller venue or the mid range venue, but instead
- 59:10Speaker 15: they put us in the big venue by it by mistake,
- 59:13Speaker 15: you know, so suddenly now that we look like half
- 59:15Speaker 15: the room's not for we're actually it was really annoying.
- 59:18Speaker 15: All the local people were really pissed off. Because they,
- 59:20Speaker 15: you know, their friends couldn't get tickets because they put
- 59:23Speaker 15: us in the smaller room.
- 59:24Speaker 10: You know.
- 59:25Speaker 15: Anyway, we'd had this gig and it's fine, We're out
- 59:27Speaker 15: the back signing, you know, copies of pictures or taking
- 59:31Speaker 15: pictures of kids and stuff. And one of the kids
- 59:34Speaker 15: held up their phone and was playing a lot of
- 59:36Speaker 15: our new album on the phone, even though it was
- 59:39Speaker 15: not out yet.
- 59:39Speaker 9: You know, and I was like, how did you how
- 59:42Speaker 9: did you get this, you know, and she was like, oh,
- 59:44Speaker 9: you know, I've had it for ages. And they're like,
- 59:46Speaker 9: we've all got it. You got all held up their.
- 59:48Speaker 15: Little kind of crappy phones, you know, and it was like, no,
- 59:52Speaker 15: but actually, how did you get it? And they and
- 59:54Speaker 15: we worked out they'd had about six or seven songs
- 59:57Speaker 15: that must have been out on cent to like pr too,
- 1:00:02Speaker 15: you know, like promotional copies are tasters basically, you know,
- 1:00:06Speaker 15: and some buckers from that industry must have you know.
- 1:00:10Speaker 15: I immediately downloaded or uploaded it to the websites that
- 1:00:14Speaker 15: all these kids are going on. I mean, I don't
- 1:00:15Speaker 15: know where the thinking is there or why that would
- 1:00:19Speaker 15: be a good thing to do if you're in the
- 1:00:21Speaker 15: industry itself. So the industry shot itself in the foot
- 1:00:23Speaker 15: to half of its degree. But and when I said
- 1:00:26Speaker 15: to them, when I said to the girls, I was
- 1:00:28Speaker 15: like wow.
- 1:00:29Speaker 9: I was like, you would you? Would you buy the records?
- 1:00:31Speaker 9: You know? Do you think you'd buy it?
- 1:00:32Speaker 15: And she was like, of course not. And I was like,
- 1:00:35Speaker 15: oh no, but it's not got all the songs on it.
- 1:00:36Speaker 15: And they're like, yeah, well, I'll just download the rest
- 1:00:37Speaker 15: of the songs when it comes, you know. And I
- 1:00:39Speaker 15: was like, all right, okay, so there's nothing would you
- 1:00:42Speaker 15: Is there anything about the record that you'd find interesting,
- 1:00:44Speaker 15: like you'd want to have or own?
- 1:00:46Speaker 9: She's like, no, why would I? And I was like, look,
- 1:00:49Speaker 9: you know, I can download.
- 1:00:50Speaker 15: The artwork if that's what you're talking about. And I
- 1:00:51Speaker 15: was like, oh, don't. To be honest, I don't know
- 1:00:53Speaker 15: what I'm talking about. I'm just trying to work it out,
- 1:00:55Speaker 15: you know, because definitely not having to go at anyone,
- 1:00:57Speaker 15: I'm just trying to work out, like what what are
- 1:00:59Speaker 15: we going to do?
- 1:01:00Speaker 9: Basically? She said yeah, and she was like you need
- 1:01:03Speaker 9: to speak to your record company. I remember really well.
- 1:01:05Speaker 9: She was like, you need to speak to your record
- 1:01:07Speaker 9: label and tell them to sort it out.
- 1:01:09Speaker 15: Because guess what, we're all downloading music and guess what,
- 1:01:12Speaker 15: you know, we wouldn't go to a bakery and pay
- 1:01:14Speaker 15: if someone's giving out the bread outside the front door,
- 1:01:17Speaker 15: like we just you know, that's absolute full would be
- 1:01:20Speaker 15: paying for stuff that's given out for free. So I'm sorry,
- 1:01:23Speaker 15: but like, we all paid to come and see your gigs,
- 1:01:26Speaker 15: and they're quite expensive and I have to wait around
- 1:01:28Speaker 15: now for my mum to come and pick me up.
- 1:01:30Speaker 9: I buy your T.
- 1:01:31Speaker 15: Shirts and to be honest with you, your T shirts
- 1:01:33Speaker 15: aren't great. It's like, oh my god, she was right.
- 1:01:38Speaker 15: Our T shirts probably weren't that great. Some of them
- 1:01:39Speaker 15: were cool, but yeah, and she was like, but like,
- 1:01:42Speaker 15: you know, this is the thing, man. You know, we're
- 1:01:45Speaker 15: not going to be buying stuff which is for free.
- 1:01:47Speaker 15: So if you if you had someone giving out T shirts,
- 1:01:49Speaker 15: then they're probably taking you a free T shirts. Well,
- 1:01:52Speaker 15: and I was like, look, I totally get it, man,
- 1:01:54Speaker 15: I get it. You know, thanks for being so honest,
- 1:01:56Speaker 15: you know. But it was a very quiet journey home
- 1:02:00Speaker 15: that night, and you know, we were just like, I
- 1:02:02Speaker 15: think it's it's game over for us, you know. And
- 1:02:04Speaker 15: it wasn't long then until management kind of delivered the
- 1:02:08Speaker 15: news and we kind of met up at a pub
- 1:02:10Speaker 15: that we used to go to and the boys were like, look,
- 1:02:13Speaker 15: to be honest with you, I think we've just done it.
- 1:02:15Speaker 9: You know, we've we've flogged it as much as we can,
- 1:02:17Speaker 9: and you know, we could go back and go independent again.
- 1:02:21Speaker 15: I think at that point people were missing their you know,
- 1:02:25Speaker 15: missing their homes and their loved ones, and you know,
- 1:02:28Speaker 15: so it felt like we tried really hard and it
- 1:02:30Speaker 15: just took everything out of us. And to be honest
- 1:02:32Speaker 15: with you, it did feel a bit like getting buried alive.
- 1:02:34Speaker 15: I mean, some of the mistakes that are being made
- 1:02:37Speaker 15: with like press and things like that, it was just like,
- 1:02:39Speaker 15: oh my god. It felt like I was like screaming
- 1:02:41Speaker 15: to try and get things working. But you know, at
- 1:02:44Speaker 15: the same time, people move on, don't they. You know,
- 1:02:46Speaker 15: it was it was becoming clear that that second album
- 1:02:49Speaker 15: wasn't going to be like that, you know, a masterpiece
- 1:02:51Speaker 15: that would be saving us from the doom of the
- 1:02:56Speaker 15: radio one playlist.
- 1:02:57Speaker 9: You know, it was like, no matter what was going on,
- 1:02:59Speaker 9: it was good enough.
- 1:03:00Speaker 15: And we were sort of coming realizing that we're coming
- 1:03:03Speaker 15: to the end of our journey, and you know what,
- 1:03:05Speaker 15: like I never kind of saw us as being a
- 1:03:09Speaker 15: kind of top five band at any point. I mean
- 1:03:11Speaker 15: I probably should have had more of an attitude like that,
- 1:03:14Speaker 15: but so really, in effect, it was almost like just
- 1:03:17Speaker 15: a kind of peaceful exit. But because we had our
- 1:03:20Speaker 15: in the house, you know, like oppress was it all
- 1:03:23Speaker 15: in the house, we just vanished.
- 1:03:26Speaker 9: There was not really much.
- 1:03:27Speaker 15: It was like kaisass whatever it is, you know, like
- 1:03:29Speaker 15: we just sort of like just sort of like disappeared,
- 1:03:32Speaker 15: you know. So then ten years later, when it was
- 1:03:35Speaker 15: our ten year anniversary, we were like, oh, well, let's
- 1:03:37Speaker 15: put something out on Facebook, and everything just blew up
- 1:03:39Speaker 15: and I was like wow, wow, yes, come on, you know,
- 1:03:42Speaker 15: and we thought, well, this would be our chance to
- 1:03:44Speaker 15: say goodbye. So when we did our first Oslo gig
- 1:03:47Speaker 15: that sold out straight away, then we had to get
- 1:03:50Speaker 15: two nights at Oslo and Hackney and that sold out as.
- 1:03:53Speaker 9: Well, and it was like Jesus and these people are
- 1:03:55Speaker 9: really into it.
- 1:03:55Speaker 15: Still, Like wow, you know, maybe we've underestimated things a
- 1:03:59Speaker 15: little bit there, but that was really like a goodbye show.
- 1:04:02Speaker 15: That was like we're doing this to say goodbye because
- 1:04:05Speaker 15: we never really got to properly. So it was really
- 1:04:07Speaker 15: emotional and like, we put a lot into it, but
- 1:04:10Speaker 15: I didn't think that there would still behusiasm now, you know,
- 1:04:14Speaker 15: so you can imagine we're full of love about this
- 1:04:17Speaker 15: whole thing, man, because it's just going to be it's
- 1:04:20Speaker 15: going to be a really special right.
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: Well, given that they all sell out, everything you've talked
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: about it in the later years have sold out really quickly,
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: have you considered putting on some more gigs or even
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: new material.
- 1:04:31Speaker 9: Yeah, we we it's yeah.
- 1:04:34Speaker 15: I've kind of like been told to be careful for
- 1:04:36Speaker 15: what I say because I'm not sure how solidified things
- 1:04:39Speaker 15: have got. But just to say that we are trying
- 1:04:44Speaker 15: to make a some extra dates work around the country
- 1:04:49Speaker 15: if we can. And it slightly ties into holiday time
- 1:04:52Speaker 15: because well, annoyingly, because.
- 1:04:55Speaker 9: Of my job, because I'm a teacher, I don't get
- 1:04:57Speaker 9: to have time off.
- 1:04:58Speaker 15: You don't get to take time off from your teacher,
- 1:05:00Speaker 15: quite rightly say, because you have holidays and stuff. So
- 1:05:02Speaker 15: we're trying to make that work and you know, with
- 1:05:06Speaker 15: some ideas and some potential festivals in the future as well,
- 1:05:09Speaker 15: would be fun. And in terms of new material, yes,
- 1:05:14Speaker 15: I have been introducing some new stuff and we've been
- 1:05:18Speaker 15: playing with some new things that we're very, very excited about.
- 1:05:22Speaker 15: So this is for me, the big dream because I
- 1:05:25Speaker 15: wanted it to feel really meaningful. I wanted it to
- 1:05:27Speaker 15: be released with new sounds so it can kind of
- 1:05:32Speaker 15: have a bit of integrity behind it rather than just like, oh.
- 1:05:35Speaker 9: Yeah, you know, here we go again.
- 1:05:36Speaker 15: You know, we're at the old boys and play some
- 1:05:38Speaker 15: old songs and we all have a lovely time. It
- 1:05:40Speaker 15: is like I want it to be like, no, hang
- 1:05:41Speaker 15: on a minute, like we can still put some stuff together,
- 1:05:44Speaker 15: you know. And yeah, it was a bit tensaitive, like
- 1:05:47Speaker 15: sending them little recordings and little doodles.
- 1:05:50Speaker 9: It was literally just a little hook I sent to
- 1:05:52Speaker 9: them on the WhatsApp and they're like, that's wicked.
- 1:05:55Speaker 10: I do something with it.
- 1:05:56Speaker 9: And I said, okay, okay, you like it.
- 1:05:58Speaker 15: You know, I go back and do something with this
- 1:06:00Speaker 15: and then sense it with a verse and the chorus
- 1:06:01Speaker 15: and they're like, yeah, I love it. And you know,
- 1:06:05Speaker 15: it's like it's like puts wind in my sales when
- 1:06:07Speaker 15: the guys like it, and without them, my music would
- 1:06:10Speaker 15: sound very very different. And does you know because I
- 1:06:12Speaker 15: still kind of mess around with other things in the background,
- 1:06:15Speaker 15: But yeah, it's the boy Kill Boys are shifting it
- 1:06:20Speaker 15: and we had a rehearsal recently and we played one
- 1:06:22Speaker 15: of the songs and we're really excited where it's going.
- 1:06:26Speaker 4: So yeah, yeah, I mean this feels like an exclusive.
- 1:06:33Speaker 9: Yeah, it is a bit.
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I think so.
- 1:06:35Speaker 4: I mean, yeah, it's not something I've seen anywhere, which
- 1:06:38Speaker 4: is great.
- 1:06:38Speaker 9: But what we want to do is make it right.
- 1:06:40Speaker 15: And and there's a third bit of exciting news but
- 1:06:43Speaker 15: I'm not allowed to say that at all, but we were.
- 1:06:45Speaker 4: Kind of like, whoa, that's a bit of a tease.
- 1:06:49Speaker 9: Well, you've got to you know, you got to leave
- 1:06:51Speaker 9: something you.
- 1:06:53Speaker 4: Wanting more.
- 1:06:55Speaker 15: But yeah, so you know, I guess I guess the
- 1:06:57Speaker 15: big question is how how would these songs be put
- 1:07:00Speaker 15: out there?
- 1:07:01Speaker 9: And you know and things like that. So I guess
- 1:07:03Speaker 9: that's the next stage and that's the next step for us.
- 1:07:06Speaker 4: It's like what that might look like and nice reissue.
- 1:07:09Speaker 15: In this day and age, there's all sorts of different
- 1:07:11Speaker 15: ways that can be done, isn't there. So we're we're
- 1:07:13Speaker 15: just working it out from here at the moment.
- 1:07:15Speaker 4: So you think you'll record that show in October? Is
- 1:07:18Speaker 4: that a plan at all?
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 1:07:20Speaker 9: We are we are recording it.
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:07:22Speaker 5: Good.
- 1:07:23Speaker 15: There's our friend Mitch. He's real old old Palavas and
- 1:07:29Speaker 15: his old band Haunts. He's the tour of us at
- 1:07:32Speaker 15: one point. We really love those guys. Mitch is a
- 1:07:35Speaker 15: brilliant producer and he's he's sort of said, hey, listen, guys,
- 1:07:39Speaker 15: want me to bring my gear and I'll record you.
- 1:07:41Speaker 9: We're like, wow, yes, please, And we want to.
- 1:07:44Speaker 15: Get some people recording with cameras as well, hopefully, and
- 1:07:47Speaker 15: then we'll sort of put something together, you know.
- 1:07:50Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:07:51Speaker 15: I mean it's really exposing, isn't it recording it, because
- 1:07:55Speaker 15: you know, not only to we probably all look quite
- 1:07:56Speaker 15: different now, but also you know, will sound different.
- 1:08:00Speaker 9: But I guess that's part of it, isn't it.
- 1:08:01Speaker 15: It's that it's the it's the twenty twenty six version,
- 1:08:04Speaker 15: and you know it's going to have a different, slightly
- 1:08:06Speaker 15: different tone to it. But to be honest, it's just
- 1:08:08Speaker 15: like I said earlier on, it's so weird how quickly
- 1:08:11Speaker 15: we you know, bands just sink back in. You know,
- 1:08:15Speaker 15: we're not playing like we're not playing music that is
- 1:08:20Speaker 15: like kind of rockets hands, you know, and it's like
- 1:08:22Speaker 15: it's not the most complicated music in the world. But
- 1:08:24Speaker 15: it's still like, you know, like Pete's keyboard parts are
- 1:08:27Speaker 15: all over the place, man, like you know how he
- 1:08:32Speaker 15: does that?
- 1:08:32Speaker 9: I just do not know.
- 1:08:33Speaker 15: Man, it's so much coordination. But yeah, so like it's
- 1:08:36Speaker 15: sounding wicked. That's all I can say. Is it sounds
- 1:08:39Speaker 15: fricking great and like we are really really hyped about
- 1:08:43Speaker 15: because we've got we've got loads of berhuses booked obviously,
- 1:08:45Speaker 15: and you know, so we're going to be really match
- 1:08:48Speaker 15: fit ready for that night.
- 1:08:49Speaker 4: So was there any songs left over from either Civilian
- 1:08:53Speaker 4: or stars in the scene? Is there any songs that
- 1:08:55Speaker 4: you didn't release not the vous somewhere?
- 1:08:58Speaker 15: Yeah, I mean they might, to be honest, be I
- 1:09:00Speaker 15: mean there might be a company, but there wouldn't be
- 1:09:02Speaker 15: anything worth to really think about. I mean, like everything
- 1:09:04Speaker 15: that was was like any more tipbits that we had
- 1:09:07Speaker 15: ended up being being kind of like used to then
- 1:09:11Speaker 15: promote other singles, you know, like in those days, I mean,
- 1:09:14Speaker 15: you know, it was like you've got the CD single
- 1:09:16Speaker 15: and you might have three versions of that, and then
- 1:09:18Speaker 15: you've got like a special on spots.
- 1:09:21Speaker 9: Maybe not Spotify, maybe on I don't know, like yeah,
- 1:09:25Speaker 9: Apple or whatever.
- 1:09:26Speaker 15: Want an exclusive to go with it, and you know,
- 1:09:29Speaker 15: so like you're sort of really digging into your bucket
- 1:09:31Speaker 15: to see what you've got left. And you know, and
- 1:09:33Speaker 15: you're busy touring. It's hard to get recording time in,
- 1:09:36Speaker 15: isn't it. So Like Yeah, B sides and things like
- 1:09:38Speaker 15: that sometimes would be used.
- 1:09:54Speaker 17: Same time, same pla, don't go dead, don't.
- 1:10:18Speaker 7: You're you're there there, Yeah, men you're there there, your
- 1:10:28Speaker 7: men's shot cells.
- 1:10:37Speaker 15: I'm pretty proud about B sides and sometimes like it's
- 1:10:40Speaker 15: the only thing, like you can listen to it because
- 1:10:42Speaker 15: if you obviously listened to the album so many times,
- 1:10:44Speaker 15: as soon as I listened to B sides and just go, shit,
- 1:10:46Speaker 15: I really like that.
- 1:10:47Speaker 9: I really like that song Like that was that was probably.
- 1:10:50Speaker 15: Hardly anyone ever got to hear that because it was
- 1:10:52Speaker 15: on vinyl at the time, which now is more popular,
- 1:10:55Speaker 15: et cetera.
- 1:10:56Speaker 9: But yeah, it's fun to be had. I reckon with
- 1:10:58Speaker 9: new material.
- 1:11:00Speaker 4: Okay, So if you look back now, because obviously you know,
- 1:11:04Speaker 4: you're in this great position where you're doing a little
- 1:11:07Speaker 4: bit of looking back as well as new material looking
- 1:11:09Speaker 4: forward even better. But when you look back, is this
- 1:11:12Speaker 4: is there something that you feel, Oh, that's like a
- 1:11:15Speaker 4: real memory that is something that's like a favorite memory
- 1:11:19Speaker 4: that you that you had with the band.
- 1:11:22Speaker 15: Yeah, yeah, that's true, and i've kind of yeah, I mean,
- 1:11:25Speaker 15: there was some some really mind blowing experience, you know,
- 1:11:30Speaker 15: sort of superficial experiences in a way, like you know,
- 1:11:32Speaker 15: some movie stars that you've ended up hanging out with
- 1:11:35Speaker 15: and you know, being left in their hotel room with
- 1:11:38Speaker 15: them like three in the morning and you know, like
- 1:11:40Speaker 15: sort of exchange strange extraordinary things like that. But to
- 1:11:44Speaker 15: be honest with you, the most special things were like
- 1:11:49Speaker 15: things like Reading Festival, Like going about to go on
- 1:11:52Speaker 15: stage at Reading Festival, which was my very first music
- 1:11:55Speaker 15: festival when I was very young, and like you know,
- 1:11:59Speaker 15: and being you know, I'm not sure was it the
- 1:12:02Speaker 15: first time, whether we opened up that stage or something
- 1:12:04Speaker 15: like that, but it just sounded amazing. And then afterwards
- 1:12:07Speaker 15: I was ushered into the sort of BBC van where
- 1:12:10Speaker 15: they they immediately showed me the footage just to sort
- 1:12:13Speaker 15: of that's something that they do to kind of go
- 1:12:15Speaker 15: are you okay with it?
- 1:12:16Speaker 9: Yes? No, all right, cool, it's usually yes, thanks, we
- 1:12:19Speaker 9: can put it out then.
- 1:12:20Speaker 15: And I just remember being just utterly blown away by
- 1:12:23Speaker 15: seeing what I look like on stage because we'd never
- 1:12:26Speaker 15: been filmed before, and just the sound of it, and
- 1:12:30Speaker 15: they made us sound like a really amazing band on TV.
- 1:12:33Speaker 9: You know, it was like it was like and and.
- 1:12:36Speaker 15: Top of the pots, you know, like being on top
- 1:12:38Speaker 15: of the pops, which you know, in itself was you know,
- 1:12:43Speaker 15: obviously you can't ever expose to the mechanics of TV,
- 1:12:45Speaker 15: and I'd already had a bit of experience to that
- 1:12:47Speaker 15: from working at MTV anyway back in the day. But
- 1:12:50Speaker 15: it was like when I was playing, I was smiling
- 1:12:53Speaker 15: my ass up and looking into the camera and just
- 1:12:56Speaker 15: just being you know, just showing how excited I was
- 1:13:00Speaker 15: about the whole thing. I think I remember getting a
- 1:13:02Speaker 15: bit told off afterwards for like looking to like.
- 1:13:06Speaker 9: What's all that smiling about.
- 1:13:07Speaker 15: You don't normally do that on stage, you know, which
- 1:13:09Speaker 15: is true because normally I like gett into it, get
- 1:13:11Speaker 15: a bit moody.
- 1:13:12Speaker 9: But I was like, this is fucking nuts.
- 1:13:14Speaker 15: And then you know, seeing all the people sort of
- 1:13:17Speaker 15: like screaming and squealing at the front and all that
- 1:13:19Speaker 15: kind of stuff. It's hilarious, you know. But yeah, I
- 1:13:22Speaker 15: just I mean, you know, things like that, just like
- 1:13:24Speaker 15: game changes aren't they just like these are like literally
- 1:13:28Speaker 15: dreams come true, you know, and then we're flying off
- 1:13:31Speaker 15: and we're spending time recording in Los Angeles and Hollywood,
- 1:13:34Speaker 15: you know, in our second album. Never thought that would
- 1:13:36Speaker 15: be a chance. You know, if the first album didn't
- 1:13:38Speaker 15: go stratospheric, then the next one is going to be
- 1:13:41Speaker 15: recorded in like Milton Keynes.
- 1:13:43Speaker 9: And that's fine, you know, but there we were.
- 1:13:45Speaker 15: We had a second chance, an incredible rockstar kind of experience,
- 1:13:50Speaker 15: and you know, yeah, I just have nothing but lovely memories.
- 1:13:54Speaker 15: I mean, they're obviously like hard times and dark times
- 1:13:58Speaker 15: and you know, and you know before not to forget
- 1:14:02Speaker 15: that that's the balance as well. But like as a band,
- 1:14:06Speaker 15: we we never really like massively fell out or anything
- 1:14:09Speaker 15: like we we we sort of probably managed well. Actually
- 1:14:16Speaker 15: outside each other, we probably were getting fall like we
- 1:14:21Speaker 15: it was never like as bad as some bands you
- 1:14:23Speaker 15: like just can't travel together and stuff like that. We
- 1:14:25Speaker 15: were we And also because we didn't, because we weren't massive,
- 1:14:30Speaker 15: we didn't get all that extra ton of backlash and
- 1:14:33Speaker 15: hate stuff. And nowadays with social media and how different
- 1:14:37Speaker 15: it is, you know, you know, I'm sure that might
- 1:14:39Speaker 15: be really hard to content to contend with. You know,
- 1:14:42Speaker 15: we didn't really get too much of that kind of stuff,
- 1:14:44Speaker 15: so really, I know it's a bit like rose tinted
- 1:14:46Speaker 15: glasses and all that kind of stuff, but nothing but
- 1:14:49Speaker 15: like fondness and and pride for the boys and for
- 1:14:53Speaker 15: what we did, and also of course for the team
- 1:14:56Speaker 15: that worked with us and around us and things like that,
- 1:14:58Speaker 15: and yeah, just just what lucky guys we were.
- 1:15:01Speaker 9: You know, I've never really been into football. I never
- 1:15:03Speaker 9: like when I was, I wasn't brought up on football.
- 1:15:05Speaker 15: And now I'm a dad, and and I'm starting to
- 1:15:09Speaker 15: feel like there's a sort of there's a link there
- 1:15:11Speaker 15: in the sort of male chain from son to dad.
- 1:15:14Speaker 9: As I'm like, so, what are we doing at lunchtime today?
- 1:15:16Speaker 9: Is only five? He's like, I was just playing in
- 1:15:19Speaker 9: the sandpit and this, that and the other. And I
- 1:15:20Speaker 9: was like, play football with the guys.
- 1:15:23Speaker 10: Play.
- 1:15:23Speaker 9: He was like, no, I don't really know how to
- 1:15:25Speaker 9: do that.
- 1:15:26Speaker 15: I was like, so start having like little football lessons
- 1:15:28Speaker 15: because I'm just like, just because I just because I
- 1:15:30Speaker 15: wasn't part of my culture growing up.
- 1:15:32Speaker 9: It's like it's so important, isn't it? For so many boys?
- 1:15:35Speaker 9: I don't know particularly, but in.
- 1:15:37Speaker 15: Terms of my family, we've only been given where we're
- 1:15:40Speaker 15: we're we're west Ham based on all the hand me
- 1:15:42Speaker 15: downs we've got from another family. So the boys a
- 1:15:46Speaker 15: running around wearing west Ham clothes. But in terms of
- 1:15:49Speaker 15: our band, because we used to live in Leyton Stone
- 1:15:51Speaker 15: when we were all together, we we like, you know,
- 1:15:55Speaker 15: and we used to I used to go and see
- 1:15:56Speaker 15: the O's a bit when I was a kid.
- 1:15:57Speaker 9: But you know, not not not like die Hard or anything.
- 1:16:00Speaker 15: But then once our management like contacts us and we
- 1:16:02Speaker 15: got you hooked up with a really good exclusive at
- 1:16:05Speaker 15: Leyton Orient, it's going to be this big coming home thing.
- 1:16:07Speaker 9: Then your band's going to go in.
- 1:16:08Speaker 15: They're going to treat it to a big Sunday roast
- 1:16:10Speaker 15: and you know, they're going to play your song at
- 1:16:12Speaker 15: halftime and all this kind of stuff. And I was like,
- 1:16:14Speaker 15: we're all like okay, cool, and it's like, you know,
- 1:16:16Speaker 15: so we've all we all turned up and we were
- 1:16:18Speaker 15: kind of frog marched into the sort of vip lounges
- 1:16:21Speaker 15: it were, and you know, we had a nice little
- 1:16:23Speaker 15: slap up roast and stuff, some nice wine and like,
- 1:16:26Speaker 15: you know, the team was losing horrendously, like it was
- 1:16:29Speaker 15: already four nail down had half time, and then then
- 1:16:33Speaker 15: some like PR guy came up to us and like, right,
- 1:16:36Speaker 15: you're on, and what do you mean you're on.
- 1:16:37Speaker 9: It's like you're you're going and you're you're going to
- 1:16:40Speaker 9: speak to the crowds and we're like what what what
- 1:16:43Speaker 9: are you talking about?
- 1:16:44Speaker 15: And he's like, yeah, that's part of the deal, like
- 1:16:46Speaker 15: you know, you got to go and you've got to
- 1:16:47Speaker 15: go into the middle of the pitch and tell everyone
- 1:16:49Speaker 15: about your new single.
- 1:16:50Speaker 9: And I was like, are you joking man?
- 1:16:52Speaker 15: No one told us this bit, so we politely, politely declined,
- 1:16:56Speaker 15: gracefully said thank you. But that wasn't going to happen
- 1:17:00Speaker 15: based on many things. A we didn't know in the
- 1:17:03Speaker 15: names of any of the players. B it's been many
- 1:17:05Speaker 15: years since to be gone there and see the team
- 1:17:08Speaker 15: was losing four neil already and ended up losing eight
- 1:17:10Speaker 15: neil anyway, So we kind of made a getaway out
- 1:17:12Speaker 15: the back door and that was the end of it.
- 1:17:14Speaker 15: That was that was our sort of link to the
- 1:17:15Speaker 15: football crowd. Basically, our song was played like you know,
- 1:17:20Speaker 15: Susie I think was played on Civil I was on
- 1:17:24Speaker 15: with FIFA like a couple of games which kind of
- 1:17:27Speaker 15: like was some sort of link into that world.
- 1:17:29Speaker 9: But that's as far as it went.
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: Really awesome, okay, brilliant.
- 1:17:32Speaker 4: Yeah, no, thank you, I mean, thanks so much for you, Nolan.
- 1:17:36Speaker 4: I really appreciate it.
- 1:17:37Speaker 9: Thank you to you guys. Thank you Nolan Martin.
- 1:17:40Speaker 15: It's been a real pleasure and speaking to you guys
- 1:17:43Speaker 15: because you know what you're talking about and you know
- 1:17:47Speaker 15: about something that I've gone through. So it's still a
- 1:17:49Speaker 15: very rare experience for me and I don't take it
- 1:17:51Speaker 15: for granted at all. So it's been really special for
- 1:17:53Speaker 15: me to have that time with you guys. So I
- 1:17:56Speaker 15: really appreciate it.
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: Thank you, thank you, thank you.
- 1:18:18Speaker 7: Yes, they may God to them. It's a bill they
- 1:18:22Speaker 7: gave God.
- 1:18:23Speaker 17: Just your style to blame them nobody. You know, you
- 1:18:28Speaker 17: can say God, get on the right.
- 1:18:31Speaker 7: Shot, Get on the right shot, get on the right track,
- 1:18:35Speaker 7: get on the right shot.
- 1:18:36Speaker 11: Now, now we may go maya, just so we could
- 1:18:41Speaker 11: bring U its upside to see God.
- 1:18:46Speaker 17: Finding interms be good.
- 1:18:49Speaker 11: Get on the right shock, get on the right shock,
- 1:18:52Speaker 11: get on the right track, get on the right try now.
- 1:19:18Speaker 7: Justo.
- 1:19:22Speaker 4: Well, thank you for listening to this episode of the podcast. Now,
- 1:19:25Speaker 4: as you know, we do our research from a variety
- 1:19:28Speaker 4: of sources, but if you want to add any more
- 1:19:30Speaker 4: detail for us, or even correct us on anything, then
- 1:19:33Speaker 4: please do get in touch with us. Where can they
