- 0:25get out of here and do that about 10 minutes or so before 2O
- 0:29clock. Let's get our Bama in here is we
- 0:31preview the weekend in college football.
- 0:34Obama, how are you? I'm.
- 0:36Doing great Ken, I know you're excited 'cause you got a free
- 0:39Saturday. Yes I do baby.
- 0:42Absolutely can't wait. And it's a pretty good week too.
- 0:44Maybe not as good as next week, but hell, beggars can't be
- 0:47choosers. I'm just happy to watch what we
- 0:49get put in front of us. And there's some really good
- 0:52games. So let's get into them, fellas,
- 0:54shall we? Let's start early in the
- 0:57morning, Trent. Texas Tech and Utah Big 12 maybe
- 1:01the two best teams in the conference.
- 1:03Yeah, you can make the argument. Texas Tech is just so difficult,
- 1:06though. I mean, they not just play bad
- 1:08teams, they're awful. Oregon State, Well, it's Oregon.
- 1:11It's not the same Oregon State. Because of that, I think it's
- 1:15very difficult to really get a stranglehold on this one.
- 1:19I know Utah, the three points in the first half against Wyoming
- 1:21was concerning as they went on the road for that one.
- 1:24But environments going to be great.
- 1:26If there is a place to have a 10 AM kick off, it's Utah in Salt
- 1:30Lake City, right? Yeah, a little bit different
- 1:32there. So already hearing from people,
- 1:35boots on the ground there, some big noon people and a couple of
- 1:37things I was listening to this morning.
- 1:39They're fired up. They're going to be ready to go.
- 1:41That 10 AM kickoff is not going to be impactful as it would be,
- 1:44I say it in LSU, a place like that.
- 1:46So not as big of a deal there. Eileen, Utah in this game.
- 1:50I think the numbers, right? It's just because it's hard to
- 1:53get a handle on tech. I think Utah has a big edge in
- 1:56the trenches. That was their strength coming
- 1:58into the season. Texas Tech, they spent a lot of
- 2:00money on their football. Is that going to be enough to
- 2:02get them past Utah? Bama.
- 2:04Well, it's interesting because like, as Trent said, I don't
- 2:07know that either one of these teams has really been challenged
- 2:09yet. Certainly Texas Tech hasn't.
- 2:12You know, Utah's got 2 road wins over what turned out to be just
- 2:15a future UCLA team. And you know, then, then
- 2:18Wyoming, obviously from the Mountain West.
- 2:21That's a pretty, you know, hell of a conference opener, isn't
- 2:24it? I think for both these teams, I
- 2:27love the fact that it's, you know, that Big Noon is there in
- 2:29Salt Lake City. I don't like the 10 AM kickoff,
- 2:32but if they're good with it doesn't bother me.
- 2:33It's 11:00 my time. I think it's down to the
- 2:36quarterbacks, right? I mean, Devin Danfier, he's done
- 2:39everything for Utah. I mean, he's not only their
- 2:41leading pastor, has yet to fill a pick.
- 2:43I think that's a big deal. He's also their leading rusher.
- 2:46I think Utah might need a little bit more help in the running
- 2:51game, maybe not for this game, but certainly as the season goes
- 2:55along. It's rare that it's, it's hard
- 2:58to find, you know, big success if your quarterback is also your
- 3:03leading rusher because he's just getting, he's taking too many
- 3:05hits. Ask the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 3:08Yeah, exactly. Precisely.
- 3:10And yet, at some point, he's going to take one too many and
- 3:13then you're going to lose. Then you're going to lose, you
- 3:15know, both your leading passer and your leading rusher.
- 3:17So I think maybe they have to do that.
- 3:20Listen, this is, you know, Kyle Whittingham to me is just he's
- 3:24so underrated and he's so consistent over the last, what,
- 3:2715 years at least. They're just, they're so hard to
- 3:31prepare for. They're different every week.
- 3:34They don't you think of them more as, you know, what kind of
- 3:37a ground and pound. And yesterday I think I agree.
- 3:39I think they have an advantage in the trenches.
- 3:41But, you know, Dampier chucks it around.
- 3:44Both quarterbacks have been good.
- 3:45Only one, you know, 18 touchdowns and one pick between
- 3:47them. Again, what level of competition
- 3:49has there been? You know, I would lean Utah
- 3:53just, you know, I'll take the coaching experience in the home
- 3:56field. You know, the weather's going to
- 3:58be great. 66 at kickoff. You said the place is going to
- 4:01be fired up. I think it's a great.
- 4:04I'm glad that Big Noon went there.
- 4:06I don't know where else they, you know, really, you know, had
- 4:08what other options they really have, but I think this is really
- 4:11good. I would like to see it as a
- 4:13night game. I think it'd be better as a
- 4:14night game, But you know, I the 10:00 AM or 11:00 AM or whatever
- 4:19is fine with me. I'll take Utah, but I think this
- 4:21is just going to be a really fun Big 12 game.
- 4:24I think it's going to be more physical.
- 4:26You look at the both teams, really, you look at them and go
- 4:28wow, they just go up and down the field.
- 4:29But I think this is going to be maybe lower scoring than people
- 4:32think because this is a step up for each one in level of
- 4:36competition over who they played today.
- 4:38Arizona State and Baylor Trent, two teams that are right there
- 4:42on maybe on that next level or maybe they do belong.
- 4:44I mean, sorry, Robertson is as good a quarterback as this is in
- 4:47the conference at a conference that has a bunch of really nice
- 4:49quarterbacks. Both teams have good
- 4:51quarterbacks in this game. Your thoughts?
- 4:53Yeah, Sam Levitt's been a disappointment, and it's not
- 4:55just the Mississippi State game. You look at completion
- 4:57percentage under 60%, five touchdowns, 3 interceptions, and
- 5:01he's got obviously his top receiver back in Tyson.
- 5:04But another missing component is not just Cam Scatabo out of the
- 5:09backfield. It's.
- 5:10Pretty big one. But also, he was her second
- 5:12leading receiver a year ago. I didn't like Arizona State
- 5:15coming into the season. I think this is a good spot for
- 5:18them. This is definitely that kind of
- 5:21differential gain, right? And I like Baylor in this spot
- 5:24at home. Think it's going to be a great
- 5:25ball game. Though Yeah, I do too.
- 5:27Do you Bama? Yeah, I think it's going to be
- 5:30tight. You know, Arizona State was my
- 5:32pick to win the conference. I'm, you know, I won't say I'm
- 5:34regretting it yet. They haven't played a conference
- 5:36game yet, but the Mississippi State game, I look, I think
- 5:40Mississippi State is, is vastly improved over this year.
- 5:44They're not going to, you know, challenge, I don't think for the
- 5:46SEC championship, but I think they're a lot better.
- 5:49And I think it was just kind of a bust, you know, at the end of
- 5:51the game, for whatever reason, they just had a busted coverage
- 5:54And and, you know, they they kind of had that game in hand.
- 5:56And that would have been if they if they had not had that, you
- 5:59know, last minute touchdown, I mean, we'd be looking at them
- 6:01going, wow, you know, look, look at who they beaten and where
- 6:04they beaten, who they played and all that type of thing.
- 6:06So that would have been a really good, I think when however, they
- 6:12lost. So again, conference opener for
- 6:15both teams. You'll do the schedule down the
- 6:16road. And it's pretty salty for
- 6:18Arizona State. They still have a trip to Utah.
- 6:20They get they got to play, they got to go to Ames, right?
- 6:24They've got what is it? They've got Houston at home,
- 6:28They've got TCU at home. I mean, it's a pretty salty
- 6:33schedule. I think this is one they have to
- 6:34get because I do think Utah and Texas Tech listen, we I'm still
- 6:40not convinced anybody's going to run away and hide with.
- 6:42This no you're. Right, with the conference here,
- 6:45maybe some teams are better than we thought.
- 6:47I certainly don't think 2 teams are going to run away and hide,
- 6:50right? So maybe one team you know is
- 6:52better than we think, but I still think it's going to be
- 6:54wide open. But this is one of those kind of
- 6:56toss up games. You start looking at the
- 6:57schedule for both teams. I think that it's kind of a must
- 7:01have. The two, I think really balanced
- 7:03equal teams when you look at it. The line I think indicates that
- 7:08I'll take Arizona State again just because I think the
- 7:11Mississippi State game, I think there might figure some stuff
- 7:14out here after that that loss. But I think this is just a
- 7:17really tight one and another fun one against two teams, you know,
- 7:20or between two teams, I guess you would say that are expected
- 7:24to compete and I think will compete be there at the end of
- 7:26the year for one of the two spots in the Big 12 championship
- 7:29game. So I'll take Arizona State, I'll
- 7:31go the other way to get the road win I but listen again, toss up
- 7:36game. I think Baylor's learned a lot
- 7:38since the Auburn game. Auburn just kind of ran all over
- 7:41them. And I don't think Arizona State
- 7:43is that type of team. And I think that's where
- 7:45Baylor's vulnerable signings is a tight game, but I'll take I'll
- 7:49take the Sun Devils on the road, which not very confidently, but
- 7:53I'll just take them anyway. There's a skillet on the line
- 7:55tomorrow, Trent, SMU and TCU, and they're playing this game
- 7:58for maybe the last time, at least for the foreseeable
- 8:00future. Speaking of Big 12 teams, I
- 8:02think TCU belongs. You've been touting Hoover since
- 8:06March. Yeah, you.
- 8:08So who do you like? You like TCU numbers?
- 8:10What about a touchdown? About a touchdown, I liked it
- 8:12when it was 7/7 and 1/2. I would have jumped on SMU at 6
- 8:151/2 and it's more that's kind of stay away and I think that's the
- 8:17right range. Most disappointing angle, those
- 8:20the one you mentioned, this game's going away.
- 8:22It's an important one down in Dallas.
- 8:24Don't have a strong opinion one way or the other.
- 8:27Disappointing start. I think for SMU, it's not just
- 8:29the loss that they took to Baylor, but they struggled last
- 8:31week against Missouri State. There was a lot of expectations
- 8:34for that team year #2 in the ACC and and haven't seen it yet for
- 8:38the Mustangs. But how do you turn around the
- 8:39season? Win a rivalry game and they'll
- 8:41get that chance on Saturday. Well, Bama, this one's going to
- 8:44have some eyeballs on it, I think.
- 8:46I totally agree and this is 1. I agree with you.
- 8:49This this should be a conference game.
- 8:50Guys, come on. I don't know why.
- 8:51What is SMU doing in the ACC? This should be a conference
- 8:54game. They should play this every
- 8:55year. 2 teams that are what, separated by 20 miles?
- 8:58Maybe I don't know the geography out there.
- 9:01But yeah, you're right, SMU has been a bit disappointing and
- 9:04this was always going to be the challenge, you know, playoff
- 9:06team last year and all that type of thing.
- 9:08They get in, they lose the ACC championship game, they kind of
- 9:11get in, you know, back to or if you want to call it that and go
- 9:13out kind of meekly to Penn State.
- 9:16You know, getting he hasn't been as good as he was last year.
- 9:18I mean Kevin Jennings and he's, you know, he's got 3
- 9:20interceptions. That's not going to cut it, you
- 9:23know, in, in Fort Worth tomorrow.
- 9:24Hoover, I'm with you, OK, my two kind of, you know, obviously you
- 9:29got Klubnick at the top in the ACC, right?
- 9:31But one of these, you know, kind of under, I'm sorry, in the Big
- 9:3412. But you know, one of these
- 9:36underrated quarterbacks for me was Hoover.
- 9:38I thought, and you know, Avery Johnson, I thought I kind of put
- 9:41in that thing too. You know, Johnson's been
- 9:43terrible. Hoover's been really good.
- 9:45I I think the number is maybe a little bit too high and I
- 9:50haven't seen SMU play much and you mentioned the loss to
- 9:52Baylor, but I just think that I think the number in a rivalry
- 9:57game like this going away, I think it's going to be a lot of
- 9:59emotion. I mean, I know they aren't
- 10:01conference phones anymore, but man, again, they're so close to
- 10:04one another geographically, fanbase, everything else playing
- 10:08for the skillet and whoever gets it gets to keep it for a
- 10:11foreseeable future, right? So I think there's going to be
- 10:13more emotion than we think in this game.
- 10:15And I think it's going to be a little bit tighter than a
- 10:17touchdown, you know, 3-4 points, something like that.
- 10:19So I think it's inside the number.
- 10:22I don't really have a feel of who's going to win.
- 10:24I think either one could, but I think it's just going to be
- 10:26tighter than the spread. So I will take I will I will
- 10:30take those points. I'm I'm with Trent.
- 10:32I would like it better 7 1/2. But even at 6 1/2, I think this
- 10:34one's inside the number. But again, the most
- 10:37disappointing anything is, you know, these other teams, you
- 10:39know, you know, Pitt and West Virginia found a way to continue
- 10:42these series. Washington, Washington State.
- 10:45For some reason, they can't. And it's a shame because this is
- 10:47a really underrated rivalry throughout the country.
- 10:50Auburn and Oklahoma Oklahoma's former team quarterback leads
- 10:55the Tigers in to take on his former team.
- 10:57A tear. The Oklahoma current quarterback
- 11:00who might be the Heisman favorite as we sit here today,
- 11:02Trent. Yeah, a lot of buzz about the
- 11:03quarterback spot here, but to me, it comes down to defense.
- 11:06Can Auburn slow down Oklahoma at all?
- 11:08And Oklahoma, though, there are still elite.
- 11:10And you look at all the numbers, they're elite there.
- 11:12You have been able to run the football a little bit of bounce
- 11:14them. So it's going to be Jackson
- 11:15Arnold, not as much with his arm, I think with his leg as he
- 11:18is a good runner. And also Cobb in that backfield
- 11:20that those two guys can get going and they can move the ball
- 11:23consistently on the ground. I think that Auburn has a chance
- 11:26to pull the upset. Do you?
- 11:27Interesting. All right, do you think that
- 11:29Auburn sniffs an upset here? I think they have a chance.
- 11:33The the thing that I'm, I think that one advantage maybe that
- 11:38Oklahoma has is familiarity, right?
- 11:40This guy who was with them last year, you know, they benched him
- 11:44and he left and I don't, you know, the look, Venables has
- 11:46said all the right things. So they have a lot of respect
- 11:48for him. They've both been, you know,
- 11:50cordial to one another in the press, you know, but you know,
- 11:53not really, you know, throwing shade or bold and war material.
- 11:55That's probably by design. But listen, anytime you're
- 11:58benched and leave, there's you've got something under your
- 12:01under your craw and there's a reason on the other side that
- 12:04you that you moved on. I think Matir has been great.
- 12:06I mean, he's been, you know, probably is the Heisman front
- 12:09runner at this point. That said, I think maybe it's an
- 12:13advantage to Oklahoma knowing what Arnold, you know, can and
- 12:16can't do, what his weaknesses are.
- 12:18And you're right, they're going to have to get a running game
- 12:20out of somebody other than him. Because the thing that was just
- 12:23confounding to me against Baylor was you knew what was coming and
- 12:28they didn't design anything to stop it.
- 12:29It wasn't that they couldn't stop, but they weren't trying to
- 12:31stop it. I mean, they just they kept
- 12:33pushing past him and let him get out the back door.
- 12:35I don't think you'll see that tomorrow.
- 12:38I don't know that it's going to be if I had to put money on
- 12:41this, I would I would lay the points because I just think
- 12:43Matir has been that good. Auburn's defense has been good.
- 12:48But the last two wins after that opening win against Baylor have
- 12:51not, you know, exactly set the world on fire against South
- 12:54Alabama, some other teams. But it's look, this is one of
- 12:59those it is a revenge game, whether anybody wants to admit
- 13:01it or not, right? You know, you had a an amicable
- 13:05breakup, if you will, but I think I think Oklahoma, I think
- 13:08this is one they kind of have to get right.
- 13:10They had such a terrible season last year, Texas and we know
- 13:13what Texas did and that's your biggest rival first year in the
- 13:16SEC. They've got some, you know,
- 13:18really big games down the road against Texas, Tennessee,
- 13:22Alabama, LSUI. Think this is one of those that
- 13:24if they don't get if they drop this one at home, then you're
- 13:27looking at another eight and four maybe at best season.
- 13:29So I will take I will lay the points in this one because I
- 13:34think they will figure out how to shut down Arnold running and
- 13:38I don't know that he's as good of a pass.
- 13:40He's got some weapons. He just hasn't used them yet.
- 13:42Maybe that's the thing for he freeze.
- 13:44I mean, this is where they, you know, Coleman and these guys
- 13:47just kind of come out of their shell and and drive it down the
- 13:49field a little bit. But so far we haven't seen it.
- 13:52And until I see it, I ain't going to believe it.
- 13:54More on this coming up at 1:50. Let's go to Lincoln, middle of
- 13:58the afternoon. The Michigan and Nebraska
- 14:00numbers. I think under a field goal, the
- 14:02Wolverines are favored. Trent.
- 14:04I told you yesterday when we had SIP on, I like Nebraska in this
- 14:07spot. I don't know the team total for
- 14:09Michigan, 23 1/2. I don't think they can get
- 14:12there. Haynes is a absolute stud.
- 14:14Underwood, though, we saw the cracks in the armor, certainly
- 14:17for a freshman quarterback. And it's not a knock against
- 14:19him, Norman. It's just the reality.
- 14:22It's 66 games yards a game. That is what Nebraska's coming
- 14:24up passing. I get the competition still,
- 14:26regardless of competition. That is an eye opening statistic
- 14:30here. I just don't think Michigan
- 14:31scores enough in this one. I think the Huskers win
- 14:34relatively comfortably on Saturday.
- 14:36Afternoon. About that, my Huskers taking a
- 14:39step forward. All right.
- 14:40Bama, Michigan, Nebraska. Yeah, I like, I like Nebraska in
- 14:44this one as well. They were one of my sleeper
- 14:46teams in the Big 10 along with Illinois.
- 14:47I just think they're going to be listen, you're 3, Matt Rule,
- 14:51right? This is where, you know, you got
- 14:53an experienced quarterback. He hasn't thought an
- 14:54interception yet this year. Michigan's defense is good.
- 14:57Again, both teams, I think the biggest test both teams have
- 15:01faced. I know Michigan has been to
- 15:03Oklahoma. Two weeks ago, Nebraska opened
- 15:06with Cincinnati. That was a, you know, an
- 15:08Arrowhead, and they've had a couple cupcakes since then in
- 15:12Akron. And whoever HCU is, I'm looking
- 15:14at my schedule. Here, Houston made something,
- 15:16yeah. Yeah, Well, whoever.
- 15:18Yeah, Houston doesn't matter. But yeah, I like, I like
- 15:23Nebraska. I I listen, Rayola, he wants to
- 15:27do his Patrick Mahomes impression, which is getting a
- 15:31little creepy, I got to say. You know, with the hand gestures
- 15:33and the jersey and the headband and everything.
- 15:35I mean, come on, dude, just be your own guy.
- 15:38But that aside, he's talented and Underwood, look, he brought
- 15:45it on. You know, you want to be
- 15:46confident, right? He's taking a lot of heat and he
- 15:48brought it on himself because he said, you know, listen, you've
- 15:51never seen a freshman quarterback like me before.
- 15:53Well, yeah, we have. We've seen about 1000 of them so
- 15:56far. This is kind of what freshmen
- 15:58do, you know, 2 touchdowns has always got through three games,
- 16:01one interception. I think they'll figure out how
- 16:05to shut down the running game and I think they'll try to make
- 16:08him, you know, beat him with his arm and I don't think he can do
- 16:11it. I like Nebraska this one.
- 16:13I agree. I think this, I think this game
- 16:15is over a touchdown and I think it's, you know, something like,
- 16:19I don't know, 2417, something like that.
- 16:22I know Michigan's defense is good, but you leave them out
- 16:24there enough and Nebraska's going to, but Nebraska doesn't
- 16:27help them with, you know, turnovers, 4 field position,
- 16:31whatever. I think, I think Nebraska wins.
- 16:34I won't say going away, but I'll say comfortably, I think it gets
- 16:36to a touchdown. Bama and Trent both think the
- 16:39wrong team is favored. We shall see.
- 16:41All right, we got a couple more games to get to.
- 16:43Let's spend a minute on Florida and Miami.
- 16:46How important for Florida it means this Napier does he?
- 16:49If it's bad Trent, what happens? Well, I mean as bad as it was
- 16:52last year, it could get ugly and for him, but I think they hang
- 16:56around. I think that there is no numbers
- 16:5898 and a half, nine, Yep, in the market.
- 17:00I think that they hang around in this one.
- 17:02Do they get the cover? I don't know.
- 17:03But I don't see a blow out here. I think Florida has enough.
- 17:06I think leg way certainly plays a whole lot better.
- 17:08And on the missing component, that defense played great last
- 17:11week against LSU and nobody's talking about how good the
- 17:14Gators are going to play. I think they got a little
- 17:15something waiting here for Carson Beck.
- 17:17Maybe not enough to win the ball game or even cover, but we're
- 17:20going to get a decent one at minimum.
- 17:22A lot of people think Miami might be the best team in the
- 17:24country. Bama, they're what, Top five
- 17:26team ranked right now? Where are you in this game?
- 17:30I got to see a little more about the best team in the country.
- 17:33And listen, I don't know that we're going to necessarily learn
- 17:35anything from them tomorrow because you mentioned Lagway, I
- 17:38mean, those the five picks at LSU and then we're these were
- 17:42not picks where he was running for his life.
- 17:44These were just terrible reads or terrible decisions.
- 17:47OK, I don't think he'll throw 5 again, but he might throw 2.
- 17:51And if he throws 2, that's enough, right?
- 17:53So, and you're right, you're 100% right about Florida's
- 17:57defense. You know, they essentially held
- 17:59LSU to 13 points because you take away the pick 6 and that's
- 18:03thirteen. However, I think LSU has
- 18:06problems on offense. So that Miami so far doesn't
- 18:08seem to have. I think that opening week win
- 18:10against Notre Dame, I understand the game plan for whatever
- 18:14reason, not to run the ball for Notre Dame was was terrible when
- 18:16it was a, you know, poor decision.
- 18:18However, that was a big win for them.
- 18:21I don't I don't know that we're going to necessarily learn
- 18:23anything. Miami should win this game, and
- 18:25I think they should win probably by 10 points.
- 18:30I mean, I just, I think Florida played better last week than
- 18:34they did in the loss against South Florida.
- 18:36On defense. It's still guys and I watched a
- 18:40lot of that game. It's the stupid penalties, it's
- 18:44the poor decision making. It's the same mistakes over and
- 18:48over under Billy Napier. And I don't know that that's
- 18:50going to stop tomorrow. And if it doesn't stop tomorrow
- 18:54and Miami gets out to a 10 point, you know, 13 point lead
- 18:58early, this gets really ugly, I think because Florida is not
- 19:01built to come back. They've got to somehow keep it
- 19:04close and, you know, be able to nip it at the end, I think.
- 19:09But I don't think that's going to happen.
- 19:11I'm just not sold on Florida. I want to give Napier, you know,
- 19:15I want to give him a fair shake. I think he's had a fair shake.
- 19:18I understand the schedule last year and this year was brutal.
- 19:20I get it, OK. It's as tough as you're ever
- 19:23going to see for anybody. When you throw in the non
- 19:26conference games against Miami, South Florida and Florida State
- 19:31on top of an SEC schedule, that's as tough as anybody.
- 19:33But that said, it's the same silly good stuff over and over
- 19:37again. I don't see it stopping
- 19:38tomorrow. I think Miami wins by 10 or
- 19:39more. All right, Trent, final game
- 19:41before we get to our sneaky good game of the week is Illinois and
- 19:45Indiana numbers about 6. I think last I checked Indiana
- 19:49favored 6. Yeah, painted 6 1/2 now, as the
- 19:52Hoosier Steam has been all week long.
- 19:54More on this game coming up at 1:50.
- 19:56How do you see the Big 10 tilt 630 NBC Bama?
- 20:00Well, I know I'm rooting for is is Illinois and they were my
- 20:03pick. Yeah, I think to go to the
- 20:04playoffs this year. I'm so tired of Indiana and you
- 20:07know, listen, they're a they're a good team.
- 20:09They made the playoffs last year.
- 20:12I guess you say they deserve it. You know, they didn't.
- 20:13They played two good teams and lost.
- 20:16That being what it is, I'm just so tired of signeting and the
- 20:19whole, you know, SCC shade and everything.
- 20:21And, and, and it's not because I'm an SCC Homer, it's because
- 20:25it's just, it's ridiculous. I mean, what he's saying, you
- 20:27know, talking about the schedules and all this kind of
- 20:29stuff. What are you going to say, Kurt?
- 20:30When they were announced Tuesday, what the, you saw that
- 20:33were the 9 opponents are going to be in the three permanent
- 20:36ones. They're going to, they're going
- 20:37to do that. And then, then, then what's your
- 20:39excuse going to be for playing an SCC kind of schedule?
- 20:42So anyway, listen, I think this is a great matchup for
- 20:44quarterbacks. I think it's going to be fired
- 20:46up. I love that it's on NBC.
- 20:47I love that it's a night game. I don't really have a feel for.
- 20:55I think this is a really dangerous spot for Illinois.
- 20:57A good win at Duke, right? That said, I think this is a
- 21:00whole other thing I'm going to. I would take Indiana to win.
- 21:04I don't take him to cover. I think Illinois will hang
- 21:07around. I like both quarterbacks.
- 21:08Neither one of them has turned it over yet. 17 touchdowns,
- 21:11winning with no picks. So I think that's huge.
- 21:14Listen, we know what Illinois wants to do.
- 21:15They want to pound it. Can they and can they get enough
- 21:18stops? I think Indiana probably wins.
- 21:20I'm rooting like hell for Illinois for a lot of reasons,
- 21:23but this is a really tough spot for them.
- 21:25If they get this one, guys, I think they're in really, really
- 21:28good shape to make the run of the Big 10 Championship game.
- 21:31Sneaky good game of the week, Trent Condon.
- 21:33Sneaky good a Big 12 team goes E BYU going to East Carolina, saw
- 21:39that one on there bareback Meyer, they have not asked him
- 21:42to do a whole lot. It's been a whole lot on the
- 21:44ground. Think they're going to have to
- 21:45against this East Carolina team that's been pretty salty against
- 21:48the run. All right, Bammy, your sneaky
- 21:50good game of the week is what? Well, I don't want to take
- 21:53yours. I'm going to let you go first.
- 21:55It's Cal on the road late at night, 930 taking on San Diego
- 22:01State. If the country doesn't already
- 22:03know him or how to say his name, they will.
- 22:05Before long sank a pull of telly.
- 22:07How they do pretty good. Pretty good.
- 22:11You didn't take either one of them.
- 22:12I thought I was going to take. No, obviously.
- 22:14I thought you would. What do you want?
- 22:16I got 2 in the SEC. I got Tulane going to Ole Miss.
- 22:20Middle of the afternoon, yeah. Yeah, that looks, it's kind of a
- 22:23sandwich game for Ole Miss, right?
- 22:25Because they they an unbelievable, yeah.
- 22:29They've got Arkansas last week and I got LSU next week and
- 22:32right in the middle of it now sits Tulane.
- 22:34I think that's kind of a dangerous spot.
- 22:37Arkansas and Memphis, again, very underrated rivalry.
- 22:40Very, you know, schools that aren't, they're very close,
- 22:43right? I mean, you know, you know,
- 22:45Fayetteville's way up in the northwest corner, These are
- 22:47border states. So I think that one's got a
- 22:49chance to be good too. But I really like that.
- 22:51Still ain't Ole Miss game. I think that's AI won't say a
- 22:53trap game. I just think it's a really
- 22:55dangerous spot if Ole Miss isn't paying attention.
- 22:58Good stuff, Bama. We'll recap it on Monday.
- 23:00Have a good weekend. We'll see you in the text
- 23:01thread. Thanks pal.
- 23:03Can't wait guys, take care. Good to talk to you.
- 23:05All right, that was Bam with Bob Trent and I going around college
- 23:08football. We'll take your time out.
- 23:09Eugene Repay covers Iowa State. He'll join us next, Miller and
- 23:13Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 23:15Hi, Miller and Condon, welcome back.
- 23:16It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 23:18Wherever you are listening in the state of Iowa.
- 23:20Glad you're with us. Our plays of the week coming up
- 23:24here in about 15 minutes or so. Eugene Repay covers Iowa State
- 23:30football and men's basketball wise for the Des Moines
- 23:32Register, desmoinesregister.com. He's got the weekend off, but
- 23:36he's going to join us for a few minutes.
- 23:38Kind of put a bow on the football season to this point
- 23:40for no, he was in Jonesboro last week.
- 23:43And then maybe a sneak peek to what we might see when TJ squad
- 23:47hits the floor coming up here in November, Eugene Trenton, Ken,
- 23:51thanks for coming on on the bye week.
- 23:52We appreciate it. How are things, Eugene?
- 23:56Yeah, no, things are things are good.
- 23:57It's good to stay busy during this bye week, twiddling my
- 23:59thumbs a little bit over here. But hey, you know, I'm sure Iowa
- 24:02State loves this break after a 4 four no start and they're ready
- 24:06to get the ball rolling here after this with Arizona.
- 24:08Yeah, fascinating game, White out under the lights, Jack Tri
- 24:11Stadium next Saturday night. Well, I guess you were in
- 24:15Jonesboro. Wasn't the shiniest, the best
- 24:19game Iowa State's played by any means.
- 24:21But you know what? At the end of the day, the four.
- 24:23No, they had a daunting schedule coming into it.
- 24:26We talked about how tricky was going to be all July, all
- 24:28August, and they made it through unscathed.
- 24:31They were do one of those hiccups, but the hiccup that
- 24:33still ended up being a win. So I guess four games into the
- 24:36season, all of them being wins. Eugene, just your thoughts on
- 24:39where this program is and what potentially might lie ahead?
- 24:43Yeah, this is exactly where Iowa State loves to be, and this is a
- 24:45great spot for them. I felt like just watching the
- 24:48game at Arkansas State, it wasn't pretty.
- 24:51But as time has kind of gone on and you get a few more days to
- 24:54digest it, this is exactly what you want to see out of this Iowa
- 24:57State team, that beginning gauntlet just traveling to
- 25:00Ireland. Was international travel going
- 25:03to hinder them? How are they going to respond to
- 25:05two rivalry games in the first three weeks?
- 25:07And so far, they've answered every question.
- 25:09They've passed every test in front of them so far.
- 25:12And to be at here at four and O fairly healthy going in and
- 25:17resuming conference play out of the spy.
- 25:19This is a great spot for Iowa State.
- 25:21Peeking ahead a little bit, that Arizona matchup, I think
- 25:23everybody had this in Penn as a victory coming into the season.
- 25:27Noah Fafida looks like the guy he was two years ago.
- 25:30Arizona gonna be maybe a more difficult opponent coming to
- 25:32Jack Trice next Saturday evening.
- 25:35And that one in on top of it, Iowa State bye week, that's
- 25:37great. Arizona also with the bye week
- 25:39here. So any advantage I guess on that
- 25:41front taken away a little more juicier matchup maybe than we
- 25:44thought coming into the season with that one Eugene?
- 25:47Much more juicier matchup and for Arizona to come into the by
- 25:50beating Kansas State in the tight 123 to 17, that's
- 25:55definitely raised a few eyebrows and probably showed that this
- 25:58Arizona team is going to be a lot more tougher than
- 26:00anticipated coming in. I'm very excited for it.
- 26:03I mean, the whiteout under the lights is going to add to the
- 26:05atmosphere. But Arizona, after just the
- 26:07tough year that they had last season, definitely looking to
- 26:10turn things around under Doefeita and and they made a
- 26:13couple of changes in the coaching staff and then now
- 26:15they're ready to go. You're done on football, Trent.
- 26:18Let's when do you guys resume, by the way?
- 26:20So Tuesday, press conferences, normal week, normal game week.
- 26:23Next week, Eugene. Yes, yeah, Tuesday would be the
- 26:27normal pregame availability, game week availability.
- 26:30So that'll be when Irish Day comes out of its warmer a little
- 26:33bit or rest and relaxation. Good stuff.
- 26:35Well, let's let's spend a couple of minutes on on men's
- 26:37basketball. What did you say?
- 26:39Trent Torvig has them the number 15 team ranked team in the
- 26:44country. Obviously, expectations on T DJ
- 26:46Squadron has been since he got there, with the exception to
- 26:49year #1 when he shocked the basketball world what the how
- 26:52what they were able to do that year.
- 26:54But they've had expectations ever since.
- 26:57This year will be no different. I guess Eugene, without seeing
- 27:00the team necessarily, just kind of what what's your thoughts on
- 27:05what we might see here coming up in the winter months?
- 27:09I think Iowa State has a great foundation to build off of.
- 27:12Sure, they lost Curtis Jones, who was a thermonuclear weapon,
- 27:15especially when he was hot and Keyshawn Gilbert when healthy
- 27:18was was amazing for Iowa State and played like an All American
- 27:21during that first half of the season.
- 27:24But for Iowa State, they have a nice foundation coming in with
- 27:27Damon, let's see, Milam Chilovich and Joshua Jefferson.
- 27:31Nate Heisey is a guy that they're hoping can play more
- 27:34like he did towards the second-half of the season and
- 27:36build off of that strong finish that he had.
- 27:38But then also just the the newcomers around them, the
- 27:41transfers coming in and and also just a blend of freshmen.
- 27:44The freshmen. Honestly, they're they're
- 27:46probably the guys that I'm most excited to see how much of that
- 27:49praise or that hype that they've built so far in the offseason,
- 27:52like a Jamarian Bateman, Killian Torre.
- 27:55How is that going to translate to game Dare when they're going
- 27:58against the guys and, and different teams?
- 28:00And will they be able to perform and handle the bright lights?
- 28:03Like that's something that I'm most intrigued about.
- 28:05But I would say top, you know #15 or still in that top 20, top
- 28:0925 picture is definitely deserving.
- 28:11They have a, you know, just that trio alone of Lipsy Munchilovich
- 28:15and Jefferson is that's a great core to build off of.
- 28:17And Iowa State actually leads the Big 12 in returning minutes
- 28:21and returning production. So they're in pretty good stage
- 28:24right now. Sure, there are a lot of
- 28:25newcomers, but I would say that this should be another solid
- 28:28year for Iowa State coming in. One guy that I'm really
- 28:31interested to see is Nate Heisey and we saw him get more
- 28:34comfortable, just didn't shoot it well for so long during the
- 28:37season and and started to come out a little bit more late.
- 28:40He's so versatile on the defensive end of the floor.
- 28:42I mean, he can guard a big guy. He can obviously guard a bunch
- 28:45of different guys in the back court, coupled with if that
- 28:47shooting comes back, the levels that we saw you and I, he's not
- 28:50going to be a guy that's averaging 18A game.
- 28:52But you know, if he can bump up what he did a season ago and
- 28:55get, you know, close to double figures, I think Heisey is a guy
- 28:58that could be really impactful. And if Iowa State goes from a
- 29:01good, solid team to maybe a great team, I think a Heisey
- 29:04could be an important part. Do you see it that way, Eugene?
- 29:07Yeah, like, you know, I think that trio is great, but if you
- 29:09have Heisey making a big jump or kind of showing that form that
- 29:12he had at you and I where he's just commanding and just so
- 29:15dominant just to do it all guard and for Iowa State to like you
- 29:19look at Heisey's numbers last year, he actually shot pretty
- 29:21well from three-point range for the whole season.
- 29:23And granted, you know, the second-half of the season was
- 29:26way better than the first half. But if he can put together a
- 29:29larger sample size or, you know, shoot as just a similar clip or
- 29:33even 35% or north of that with more shot attempts like that
- 29:38would go a long way for Iowa State, for Nate Heise to just
- 29:41the way that he was starting to command the the defensive
- 29:43attention, especially in the last month or two.
- 29:47That was big for Iowa State. You know, it wasn't a guy that
- 29:49like, oh, Heidi's out there. You know, we can sag off a
- 29:51little bit or we don't. We don't.
- 29:53We could take this guy easy if he can just lead and continue to
- 29:57just build off of that second-half that he had last
- 29:59year. That would do wonders for Iowa
- 30:01State for sure. Yeah Mont Tilovich the guy for
- 30:03me if he's got if he's going like he's barely has been this
- 30:07summer glowing reports on the 69 junior certainly did you know
- 30:13what it's about the the exhibition games which you know
- 30:15up until this point they top secret nobody can see him type
- 30:20of thing. No one knows when the well,
- 30:21that's not the case anymore. And I love it.
- 30:23And I think it's probably in part because it's an opportunity
- 30:27to raise a little money with selling some tickets in an era
- 30:29where every school and athletic department look looking for that
- 30:33extra cash. So they'll go to Creighton on a
- 30:37Friday night and then it's a little bit of a gap before
- 30:40Northwestern comes here. Will you be following the team
- 30:43to both of those? You've you've got your marching
- 30:45orders yet for that? And any idea when they would tip
- 30:49it? All of it has been.
- 30:50Any Intel along those lines? Yeah, I think the plan is for
- 30:55Travis and Travis Hines and I to be there for both exhibitions.
- 30:58We will go to Omaha. I mean, thankfully, you know,
- 31:00it's a within a driving distance.
- 31:02Might be a different story if it was like 6 hours away.
- 31:05But. You know, that should be an
- 31:06exciting one. And also what are the odds that
- 31:08they're going to play Creighton in the regular season as well at
- 31:10the players era? That's great.
- 31:13Yeah. But I know that Omaha Creighton
- 31:16game is supposed to tip at 7:30, I believe on a Friday, and then
- 31:19I'd have to double check that Northwestern one.
- 31:21But yeah, I'm with you on that. Like, I feel like, you know,
- 31:25back then you you could only go off at the rumors or what you
- 31:28heard from the quote UN quote secret scrimmages.
- 31:31I, there were a couple times I joked like, oh, you know, maybe
- 31:34I should apply to be a editor, get on a custodial staff, sneak
- 31:37my way into the arena for some of these scrimmages.
- 31:40But no, it's, it's great that it'll be broadcast to public.
- 31:43Even fans can come in and people can get a sneak peek or like a
- 31:47old peek is what to come for the regular season.
- 31:50Absolutely, Eugene. Thanks for taking some time on
- 31:52the weekend off. We appreciate it.
- 31:54We will talk to you down the road.
- 31:56Thank you, Eugene. Repay.
- 31:57Appreciate it. Of course, thank you guys for
- 31:59having me on. Good to talk to you, Eugene
- 32:01Repay along with Travis Hines covering the Cyclones for the
- 32:03Des Moines Register, desmoinesregister.com.
- 32:06I think the Northwestern game is a as a Sunday, so I imagine
- 32:09that's during the day, right? It is a Sunday TBA listed
- 32:13officially on TBA. Yeah, I'm, I would think it
- 32:16would be. Well, we'll see.
- 32:17Never know. All right, we'll take a time
- 32:19out. Our plays of the our plays of
- 32:21the week are coming up. When it comes to football, we'll
- 32:23give the latest standings. It's Miller and Condon versus
- 32:27off the bench. Those standings are tightening
- 32:29up. We got to put a little distance
- 32:30between the boys. By the way, the fellas are at
- 32:33Shields coming up here at with their show at the top of the
- 32:37hour. We'll tell you can win some
- 32:38tickets to Indiana, Iowa on the other side as well.
- 32:42You're listening to the Iowa Sports Radio Network.

- 32:51pickup sponsored by Circus Sports on One O 6.3, KXNO and
- 32:57the Iowa Sports Radio Network. I'm Lori Compton.
- 33:02Before we get to our pick, do you wear bifocals?
- 33:05Not yet soon. Whoever invented him, that's
- 33:09serious. It's the cruelest SOB to ever
- 33:11walk the face of the earth. Really.
- 33:13Oh, he's a son of a You know, it's awful trying to get used to
- 33:18it. Get.
- 33:18Used to him. I guess maybe once you get used
- 33:20to him, I can't. Anyways, Trent, enough about
- 33:24that. But elite eye care is where I
- 33:25would go. Yes, absolutely.
- 33:27That sounded good. That young girl, it sounds like
- 33:30they got her eye vision on the right path.
- 33:33Anyways, if you want to win tickets to Indiana coming to to
- 33:37Jack tries to Kinnick next Saturday, you can go to a Miller

- 34:10We have a slim lead. We do have a lead, yes.
- 34:13A lead, though. In front by a couple.
- 34:15Yes, we both had winning weeks last week.
- 34:17I went three and two, he went four and one, but the boys both
- 34:21went four and. One Oh my God.
- 34:23Hey, you can't yell at me for having a winning week.
- 34:25I'm digging out of an old 5 hole.
- 34:26No, we're battling patch. Zero in Week 1, Two wins in
- 34:30week. Yes, 2.
- 34:32Yes, 3 in week 3, you see where we're going.
- 34:36I do, hopefully to four and one or better.
- 34:39So I go first this week. All right, let's get into it.
- 34:42I was four and one last week. Likewise, Sean.
- 34:44Likewise, Lucas. To be fair to the boys in the
- 34:47afternoon, they had both had good weeks.
- 34:49I'm going to start in the NFL where I'm going to take two
- 34:52teams that played each other. Last week didn't go well for me.
- 34:55I had the Steelers. How'd that go?
- 34:56Not good. Seattle, they go to new, they
- 34:59stay at home. The 12th man and the Seahawks
- 35:04will welcome in the New Orleans Saints.
- 35:06The number 7. It's a touchdown.
- 35:08New Orleans is maybe better than I thought, but going to Seattle,
- 35:13I'm not buying it. Spencer Rattler, I think that
- 35:1512th band is going to rattle Rattler.
- 35:16We shall see. I will take Seattle, lay the
- 35:19touchdown. I can't believe the Steelers are
- 35:21going to be as bad as they look. Last week, 2 weeks ago, I just
- 35:23refused to believe so New England is a they're not good,
- 35:27they're not good. They're going to be drafting
- 35:28very highly. Again, the numbers relatively
- 35:33tight, which kind of makes me wonder if I'm on the right side.
- 35:36But I'll lay the point and a half and take the Steelers,
- 35:39Steelers and Seahawks, my two NFL picks, to the college game.
- 35:44Oklahoma and Auburn. Quarterbacks stealing the
- 35:48spotlight in this one. I was really impressed by
- 35:51Oklahoma when they played Michigan a couple of weeks back.
- 35:54Numbers under a touchdown at 6 1/2.
- 35:56Right now, I'm going to take Oklahoma, lay the 6 1/2.
- 36:00I think it's going to be a close game.
- 36:01Maybe a late score pushes Oklahoma over the top.
- 36:04But I think Mateer right now is in the driver's seat for the
- 36:06Heisman. I get it's not even the end of
- 36:08September. Pipe down.
- 36:10You have to slow your roll a little bit.
- 36:12But true, somebody's got to be the leader.
- 36:14At this point. I think it's him.
- 36:15I'll take Oklahoma pick #2 Clemson's getting their guys
- 36:18back, two of them on offense, including one of their
- 36:21receivers, maybe their best receiver, and another one on
- 36:23defense and offensive lineman. It's put up for shut up time.
- 36:26I mean, Dabo, he's telling me, look, if you don't want me here,
- 36:29I'll leave, go somewhere else and win.
- 36:31I think Clemson is going to open up a can.
- 36:34Syracuse is good but only 16 and a half. 1717 1/2.
- 36:39You get past that magic number. Maybe would've looked elsewhere.
- 36:42It's 16 1/2. I'll take Clemson pick #2 my
- 36:45best bet of the week. By the way.
- 36:47I meant to be Clemson but it turned it in as Duke.
- 36:51Yes, it's Duke in North Carolina State.
- 36:54North Carolina State's unbeaten, they played a couple of teams
- 36:56from the ACC and one of them was a non conference game.
- 36:59They're three. You know, I keep going back to
- 37:02Duke and Trenton. This is why you got me out of
- 37:04this game. Tell me about the Illinois Duke
- 37:06game, how much you love Duke. And he had me all worried about
- 37:08that one. But I'll take Duke as my best
- 37:10bet of the week. I think that they just met
- 37:13Tulane last week and they got their former quarterback.
- 37:16So we'll see. Mensa, I think he gets things
- 37:19going this week. How about UTC?
- 37:20Duke who? What are they?
- 37:21What's the number of? That 2 1/2.
- 37:23Lane 2 1/2 with the Dukies. All right, college we go and
- 37:26we're going to kick it off. As mentioned in the Big 10, this
- 37:29in the business is called reverse line movement. 88% of
- 37:33the bets and 80% of the money is on Illinois.
- 37:36That this thing has continued to creep.
- 37:38That tells you that the sharps are all over the Hoosiers and
- 37:41I'll jump aboard. Now I got the worst of the
- 37:42number here laying the 6 1/2. I am fine with it.
- 37:45So Nettie, he puts up and he will get it done.
- 37:49Indiana minus the 6 1/2. That is my only favorite of the
- 37:51week. Next we go to East Carolina.
- 37:53Mentioned this game earlier. Sneaky good.
- 37:55I don't like Bachmeyer in this environment.
- 37:57East Carolina, good on both sides, sides of the football.
- 38:00This is a live dog. I'll grab the 6 1/2.
- 38:02And when I put together my muddy line parlay this weekend, yeah,
- 38:05the Pirates are going to be involved.
- 38:07Finish up with the NFL. Let's start with the Tampa Bay
- 38:10Buccaneers, decimated with injuries on their offensive
- 38:14line. The Jets maybe an upgrade at
- 38:16quarterback with Tyrod getting to start this week.
- 38:18Give me the 6 1/2 with The Jets with pick #3, pick #4.
- 38:22It's the visual match up, an important one.
- 38:24I'm going to grab your Broncos getting a field goal now in the
- 38:27market. We'll grab that three with
- 38:29Denver in a desperate spot and wrap it up.
- 38:32My best bet. They got to hit some week, the
- 38:34Titans against the Colts this week.
- 38:36I'll take Tennessee all. Right.
- 38:37That's going to do it for us. We appreciate you being with us.
- 38:41Coming up next is off the BENCH, The boys are at Shields, Jordan
- 38:44Creek and Valley Den at Valley Junction in West Des Moines.
- 38:49They're there until 5. Miller and Condon, we're with
- 38:52you Monday through Friday, noon to two.
- 38:54We'll talk to you on Monday. Have a great weekend.
- 38:55It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network in Des Moines sports
- 38:58station KXNO.
