- 1:21Speaker 1: your Google Play, Spotify, or pod Bean. It's the greatest
- 1:25Speaker 1: thing since a New Masters Tournament video game. Hello friends.
- 1:38Speaker 1: I'm not much of a gamer, but I think that's
- 1:40Speaker 1: about to change after last week's announcement that EA Sports
- 1:43Speaker 1: is coming out with a new, incredibly detailed video game
- 1:47Speaker 1: featuring Augusta National. Not only will we be able to
- 1:51Speaker 1: virtually play the course with every Dogwood and Azalea authentically recreated,
- 1:57Speaker 1: but will even drive down Magnolia lad. It's certainly the
- 2:00Speaker 1: closest I'll ever come to playing Augusta. He doesn't know
- 2:04Speaker 1: it yet, but I've got a fourteen year old son
- 2:06Speaker 1: who is going to get that game as a present,
- 2:09Speaker 1: whether he wants it or not. I might even allow
- 2:13Speaker 1: him to play the game with me. Now, let's get
- 2:16Speaker 1: to football. Back in January, the Bengals announced that they
- 2:20Speaker 1: will literally have new stripes this year. They are changing
- 2:23Speaker 1: their uniform for the first time since two thousand and four.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Today on Bengals dot Com, the team posted a fantastic
- 2:30Speaker 1: video about the history of their uniforms, along with the
- 2:33Speaker 1: announcement that their new look will be unveiled on Monday.
- 2:38Speaker 1: To give you an idea of what's gone into the process,
- 2:40Speaker 1: I spoke to the Bengals Director of Strategy and Engagement,
- 2:43Speaker 1: Elizabeth Blackburn. Elizabeth, let's start with the why. Why did
- 2:48Speaker 1: the Bengals decide it was time for a new look.
- 2:51Speaker 1: The process to change your uniform is quite a lengthy process.
- 2:57Speaker 1: So well I have seen make comments about let's change,
- 3:02Speaker 1: let's change now, or let's change because we got a
- 3:04Speaker 1: new quarterback. It's actually a multi year process. But even
- 3:09Speaker 1: with all of that said, we knew that we hadn't
- 3:12Speaker 1: changed our uniform since two thousand and three, and I
- 3:16Speaker 1: believe this predated my arrival. But when we went through
- 3:21Speaker 1: the coaching change, it felt like it had been a
- 3:24Speaker 1: while since we changed our uniforms and it was time
- 3:29Speaker 1: for a new look and a new uniform to accompany that.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Next chapter in Bengal's history, tell us what the process
- 3:37Speaker 1: is like. Do a bunch of people submit designs or
- 3:40Speaker 1: do you pick a designer who submits a bunch of concepts.
- 3:44Speaker 1: So the NFL is partnered with Nike so we work
- 3:49Speaker 1: with Nike to redesign the uniform, and the process starts
- 3:56Speaker 1: with a brief where the team explains what they're looking
- 4:01Speaker 1: for and from their Nike works with their team of
- 4:06Speaker 1: designers to come back with options and go through a
- 4:11Speaker 1: process where we've given them the brief, they come back
- 4:14Speaker 1: with design to you go through a few iterations back
- 4:17Speaker 1: and forth. I like this, I don't like that, and
- 4:20Speaker 1: ultimately that's how you land on the final design. So
- 4:24Speaker 1: describe what the Bengals were looking for. Fans and players
- 4:28Speaker 1: love our colorush uniform because it is sleek, it is bold,
- 4:34Speaker 1: so we wanted to build on that. In addition, we
- 4:37Speaker 1: were factoring in some elements of the existing uniform that
- 4:42Speaker 1: we knew were kind of ready for an update. So
- 4:46Speaker 1: combining some particular pain points on our existing uniform that
- 4:51Speaker 1: we're frankly in style in two thousand and three, but
- 4:54Speaker 1: style has changed since then, it was kind of eliminate
- 4:59Speaker 1: some of these particular pain points with the broad goal
- 5:03Speaker 1: of achieving a sleek, timeless, iconic, bold design. We're talking
- 5:09Speaker 1: to Elizabeth Blackburn, the Bengals Director of Strategy and Engagement.
- 5:12Speaker 1: I've been amazed by all the cool designs that fans
- 5:15Speaker 1: have posted on social media. There's some really talented people
- 5:19Speaker 1: out there. Was that the case for you as well.
- 5:22Speaker 1: We are not allowed to use or look at fan
- 5:26Speaker 1: or other creative input. It has to purely be through Nike.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Either's like a proprietary element there. But so I haven't
- 5:34Speaker 1: looked too too closely, But I enjoy seeing our fans
- 5:40Speaker 1: post and comment enough to a appreciate the talent you
- 5:44Speaker 1: just mentioned. I mean, it is amazing how many of
- 5:47Speaker 1: our fans are so talented in jersey swaps and creating
- 5:52Speaker 1: new concepts. It's amazing. I also, just through comments, have
- 5:58Speaker 1: you seen some of the particular or pain points I
- 6:01Speaker 1: would describe them with our existing uniform? And I hope
- 6:06Speaker 1: that fans are relieved to hear that the organization echoed
- 6:11Speaker 1: some of those opportunity areas to make the new uniform
- 6:15Speaker 1: less blocky and more sleek in the new design. So
- 6:21Speaker 1: how did you make the final choice. It's funny because
- 6:25Speaker 1: as you go through the process, honestly, by the end
- 6:29Speaker 1: it's almost a little anticlimactic because you are finessing over
- 6:34Speaker 1: the tiniest little detail and then finally you just have
- 6:39Speaker 1: to be done. And I think For me, I was
- 6:44Speaker 1: very involved in some of those tiny little last minute
- 6:49Speaker 1: oh make it just a little bit this way, and
- 6:52Speaker 1: it took me a little bit of time between yep, okay, deadline,
- 6:57Speaker 1: this is it, and then if you are often doing
- 7:01Speaker 1: other things, and then several months later when we saw
- 7:06Speaker 1: the first prototype. It was exciting to see the final
- 7:10Speaker 1: design and I hope everybody feels as excited as we
- 7:14Speaker 1: were when we got to unbox it for the first time.
- 7:17Speaker 1: How many versions and color combinations will there be with
- 7:21Speaker 1: a new uniform? So there will be three different jerseys
- 7:26Speaker 1: in three different pants that give us at Max a
- 7:31Speaker 1: combination of nine, but we'll work with you know, the
- 7:35Speaker 1: team to decide. I'm not sure we'll really plan to
- 7:40Speaker 1: use and fans, we'll see all nine of them this year.
- 7:43Speaker 1: There's like one that sort of really just is meant
- 7:46Speaker 1: to be together. What about the possibility of throwback uniforms
- 7:51Speaker 1: at some point going forward? Throwback uniforms are a possibility
- 7:58Speaker 1: going through the new uniform design and process. For this year,
- 8:03Speaker 1: we just wanted to introduce our new uniforms and really
- 8:08Speaker 1: showcase our new uniform and the new uniform combinations we
- 8:12Speaker 1: just talked about for this year, So that's where and
- 8:16Speaker 1: why fans will only see three jerseys this year and
- 8:20Speaker 1: no throwback. It is something that we're thinking about for
- 8:25Speaker 1: future years because the league has a lot of rules
- 8:29Speaker 1: on the uniforms, and that's why fans, we hear you
- 8:32Speaker 1: and we know you want that white helmet, but right now,
- 8:36Speaker 1: by rule, we're only allowed to have one helmet. The
- 8:39Speaker 1: NFL rules also stipulate that you can have up to
- 8:43Speaker 1: but no more than four jerseys. We'll have three this year,
- 8:47Speaker 1: and for future years we can keep a fourth jersey
- 8:51Speaker 1: on the table. We'll have to explore that the helmet
- 8:55Speaker 1: is not changing. Did you consider changing helmet? We did
- 9:01Speaker 1: a little bit when I joined in on the process.
- 9:06Speaker 1: I wasn't there since the beginnings. I don't know if
- 9:08Speaker 1: it was halfway or frankly later because it's so many years.
- 9:11Speaker 1: So I was coming in probably at like the seventy
- 9:14Speaker 1: percent mark, and we were still toying with a very
- 9:19Speaker 1: minor tweak to the helmet that honestly, when I saw
- 9:23Speaker 1: the initial deck, I didn't even notice. And because our
- 9:28Speaker 1: helmet is so iconic and it's sleek, and the only
- 9:32Speaker 1: modification they were suggesting to me lost some of that
- 9:36Speaker 1: sleek element that really I think pairs nicely with the
- 9:39Speaker 1: new uniforms. You think of a tiger, you think of
- 9:42Speaker 1: a sleek, beautiful animal, someone ferocious, and the minor tweak
- 9:47Speaker 1: on the helmet made it just feel a little clunky
- 9:50Speaker 1: and didn't feel worth it. We will get our first
- 9:54Speaker 1: look next Monday, April nineteenth. This is very exciting stuff.
- 9:59Speaker 1: I appreciate you for taking us inside the process. Thanks Elizabeth,
- 10:02Speaker 1: Thank you Dan. The Bengals Booth podcast is presented by
- 10:06Speaker 1: Bud Light Seltzer. It's light and refreshing with a hint
- 10:09Speaker 1: of fruit flavor. On Tuesday, I decided to take a
- 10:12Speaker 1: look at mock drafts that have come out in the
- 10:14Speaker 1: last two weeks and found fifteen on ESPN, CBS Sports,
- 10:19Speaker 1: NFL dot Com, Pro Football Focus, and Pro Football Network.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Six have the Bengals selecting Oregon offensive lineman Pinney Sewell
- 10:28Speaker 1: with a fifth overall pick, Six have Cincinnati taken LSU
- 10:32Speaker 1: wide receiver Jamar Chase, and three have the Bengals going
- 10:35Speaker 1: for Florida tight end Kyle Pitts. We'll get to Pitts
- 10:39Speaker 1: next week, but today it's more expert testimony in the
- 10:43Speaker 1: teams Sewell versus Team Chase debate. Up. First, I recently
- 10:48Speaker 1: spoke to Oregon head coach Mario Cristo Ball shortly before
- 10:52Speaker 1: Bengals head coach Zach Taylor, offensive line coach Frank Pollock,
- 10:55Speaker 1: and director of player Personnel Duke Tobin traveled to Washington
- 10:59Speaker 1: to watch Piney Sewells pro day. Look, let's start with
- 11:03Speaker 1: the recruiting process. Do you remember first hearing about Pinay
- 11:07Speaker 1: and what were your initial impressions of him? Well, I
- 11:10Speaker 1: remember it very vividly where coach Joe Salivair, defensive line coach,
- 11:17Speaker 1: we had just gotten near to Oregon as comes from
- 11:19Speaker 1: the University of Alabama, where coincidentally the recruitment of your
- 11:24Speaker 1: other tackle, Jonah Williams, which is for another day in time,
- 11:27Speaker 1: but we could certainly that will be if I want
- 11:29Speaker 1: to talk about too. But my man Joe Salavea pulls
- 11:33Speaker 1: out a video and he shows me the video of
- 11:38Speaker 1: his neighbor's son, the Soul Family, and how he's playing
- 11:43Speaker 1: offensive line over in Utah at Desert Pines, and I
- 11:48Speaker 1: was like, whoa that is? That is some uncommon power
- 11:52Speaker 1: and explosiveness and athletic ability. We have to recruit this guy,
- 11:55Speaker 1: and that's how it started, and that led to a
- 11:59Speaker 1: very just whinding, crazy, fun, exciting I would say, this
- 12:06Speaker 1: an incredible journey of a recruiting process and the rest
- 12:10Speaker 1: is history. How did you sell him on coming to Oregon? Well,
- 12:13Speaker 1: we were just real. You know, we had fount that
- 12:16Speaker 1: we had established a really good offensive line process while
- 12:19Speaker 1: we were at the University of Alabama, and that was
- 12:22Speaker 1: a process that we were bringing over here. You know,
- 12:24Speaker 1: it was one that you know, the system that we
- 12:26Speaker 1: played with played in at the University of Miami and
- 12:29Speaker 1: carried over a large chunk of that to to Alabama
- 12:32Speaker 1: and then continue to tweak it and brought it over here.
- 12:34Speaker 1: And that the offense and this, I would say, the
- 12:40Speaker 1: culture was going to be set around what we do upfront,
- 12:43Speaker 1: and it starts with the offensive line and the defensive line,
- 12:45Speaker 1: and that he could be a difference maker. And we
- 12:48Speaker 1: said it in a recruiting sense, we said it in
- 12:51Speaker 1: a very real and honest sense. And I think he
- 12:54Speaker 1: saw the vision. He saw the vision and that there
- 12:56Speaker 1: was some work to be done, but he jumped in
- 12:58Speaker 1: full brottle and he made a tremendous impact of historical
- 13:03Speaker 1: run here both in the eighteen and nineteen season. We
- 13:06Speaker 1: are talking to Oregon head coach Mario crystal Ball. He
- 13:09Speaker 1: started for you as a true freshman at the age
- 13:12Speaker 1: of seventeen. It was a month before his eighteenth birthday.
- 13:15Speaker 1: How quickly was it apparent that he could start right
- 13:18Speaker 1: off the bat? Well, it was I would say practice five.
- 13:22Speaker 1: When in practice one you knew, I mean they were
- 13:25Speaker 1: he was knocking guys around. I mean he was. He
- 13:28Speaker 1: grasped concepts so easily, just very natural, very instinctive. But
- 13:33Speaker 1: when it really hit, it was in the office. The
- 13:36Speaker 1: line coach out there can appreciate. You know, he's we're
- 13:38Speaker 1: running power passed, and we was he was playing right tackle.
- 13:41Speaker 1: He was playing right tackle, and thought that would be
- 13:43Speaker 1: a good way to kind of, you know, let him
- 13:45Speaker 1: get adjusted and progress. And during power pass, as he's
- 13:50Speaker 1: locked into a double team, he felt something kind of
- 13:52Speaker 1: hit his his ankle and you could see him he's
- 13:55Speaker 1: engaged in the block. He looks down and he sees
- 13:58Speaker 1: the guard somehow I got tripped up on his way
- 14:01Speaker 1: to pull for the defensive end. And here's a seventeen
- 14:04Speaker 1: year old freshman in practice five feels that sees that
- 14:09Speaker 1: realizes that Okay, that guy's on the ground. No one's
- 14:11Speaker 1: going to block the defensive end. So he presses out
- 14:13Speaker 1: the double team, maintains presence on the double team, and
- 14:17Speaker 1: gets a hand out there to block the defensive end
- 14:19Speaker 1: long enough to get the ball off. So that's like
- 14:22Speaker 1: the type of intuition, the type of I don't know,
- 14:25Speaker 1: spider sense that a tenure NFL veteran has. So that
- 14:29Speaker 1: just it blew us away, and it made us realize, Okay,
- 14:34Speaker 1: this we knew about the ability, We knew about the desire,
- 14:37Speaker 1: the want to. But now when you combine these type
- 14:41Speaker 1: of instincts, this level of football IQ without ability, we're
- 14:44Speaker 1: gonna is gonna be a special, special one. I spoke
- 14:47Speaker 1: to an NFL draft guru who gives Penney very high
- 14:50Speaker 1: marks but says that he needs to get stronger. Is
- 14:55Speaker 1: that fair? And is there anything else that you think
- 14:58Speaker 1: that's really obvious that he needs to imp He's the
- 15:01Speaker 1: best lineman in college football and it's not by a
- 15:03Speaker 1: little and the fact that he's what is he now twenty?
- 15:08Speaker 1: His body is getting stronger and stronger and strong and
- 15:11Speaker 1: I think when you guys see him work out at
- 15:13Speaker 1: the upcoming Pro day and the combine, you're gonna see
- 15:17Speaker 1: a three hundred and will probably be down at three
- 15:20Speaker 1: thirty five, three thirty two. He's gonna look like he's
- 15:22Speaker 1: three hundred because he's lead, he's explosively's strong, he will
- 15:26Speaker 1: he already has great strength, and it's gonna get even
- 15:30Speaker 1: better because he's so young, like he's just beginning to develop.
- 15:35Speaker 1: I mean, this is like, this is a guy that's
- 15:39Speaker 1: on a different level type of track towards towards greatness
- 15:43Speaker 1: and prominence in the NFL. So I'll feel very confident
- 15:46Speaker 1: where he is and where he's going. Our guest is
- 15:48Speaker 1: Oregon head coach Mario crystal Ball. You've been quoted as
- 15:51Speaker 1: saying that Piney is the best overall football player that
- 15:55Speaker 1: you've been around. Now, you just had Justin Herbert, You
- 15:58Speaker 1: played on national two championship teams at Miami, you coached
- 16:02Speaker 1: an Alabama, So that's saying something what lifts Piney to
- 16:06Speaker 1: that level. Yeah, I've had a bunch of my former
- 16:09Speaker 1: players just kill me on that one. But it's because
- 16:14Speaker 1: there's so many that are up there. You mentioned Justin.
- 16:16Speaker 1: I mean again, you know some of the guy on
- 16:18Speaker 1: your own team right now, there as good as it
- 16:21Speaker 1: gets um pine, as young as he was, and you're
- 16:25Speaker 1: looking at a guy that really could have spent another
- 16:27Speaker 1: year in high school. Right, was almost a great ahead?
- 16:30Speaker 1: Is that when you combine that type of power athleticism.
- 16:33Speaker 1: Do you watch film, he's rarely ever ever on the
- 16:36Speaker 1: ground that type of balance you believed to slide anchor
- 16:39Speaker 1: be that light footed but heavy handed, have that type
- 16:42Speaker 1: of flexibility in your hips and ankles, understand the intent
- 16:47Speaker 1: of a play hat position, what the guys around you
- 16:50Speaker 1: are doing, and when you play that hard to finish
- 16:54Speaker 1: and knock people back. Um, it's just it's rare. It's
- 16:58Speaker 1: it's elite. You know, it's one hundred percentile. And I
- 17:02Speaker 1: just what can I say? If the guy in his
- 17:05Speaker 1: second year in college football won the Outlet Trophy at ninete,
- 17:10Speaker 1: think about that, and he was having the best offseason
- 17:13Speaker 1: in his life before our season was canceled and then
- 17:16Speaker 1: later restarted. So I don't think it's it's understood how
- 17:21Speaker 1: incredibly advanced this guy is. And but the more they
- 17:26Speaker 1: watched him they realize what his ages. You're just not
- 17:29Speaker 1: going to find a better prospect. I really don't think
- 17:31Speaker 1: at any position. But again, and look, I get it.
- 17:34Speaker 1: I coached the guy, So people say, well, he's biased,
- 17:37Speaker 1: Like I've been around and been lucky. I've been lucky
- 17:40Speaker 1: fortunately around great players. This guy is as good as
- 17:45Speaker 1: it gets. And again just getting started. And I had
- 17:48Speaker 1: forgotten about your ties to Jonah Williams from your years
- 17:51Speaker 1: as an Alabama assistant. So if the Bengals wind up
- 17:54Speaker 1: selecting Pinet, if he's still there at number five and
- 17:57Speaker 1: Cincinnati takes him, how would they be set with Jonah
- 18:01Speaker 1: Williams on one side and Pinnay at the other. Oh
- 18:04Speaker 1: my lord, are you to me those two guys right there?
- 18:07Speaker 1: Because Jonah was I've always you know, if there's parabol
- 18:10Speaker 1: coach to be talking about Jonah the best I have
- 18:12Speaker 1: ever seen, because I recruited Jonah as hard as any
- 18:16Speaker 1: human being you can ever imagine, and then try to
- 18:19Speaker 1: match that into recruiting Pinay because they're game changers. I'll
- 18:22Speaker 1: never forget watching Jonah out of practice when I flew
- 18:26Speaker 1: out there to fulsome California and it was in shorts
- 18:29Speaker 1: and helmets, but the guy was going full speed as
- 18:32Speaker 1: if it was a patch as heavy handed, great balance
- 18:35Speaker 1: and power. If you have those two guys at tackle,
- 18:38Speaker 1: I you know again, I am in college football. I
- 18:40Speaker 1: don't I don't get to watch as much NFL footballs
- 18:43Speaker 1: as I would like to do to the scheduling. But
- 18:46Speaker 1: I can't imagine I haven't been around better tackles than that.
- 18:49Speaker 1: You know, Camp Robinson and those guys are you know,
- 18:51Speaker 1: Bryan McKennis, He's are just the top of the food chain. Guys.
- 18:56Speaker 1: Last thing for Oregon head coach Mario Cristo Ball, years
- 18:59Speaker 1: from now, when you are speaking at an Oregon function
- 19:02Speaker 1: and telling the alums a story about pinay sewell, what
- 19:07Speaker 1: will you tell them? What will be the h the
- 19:09Speaker 1: message message you want to pass along about him? The
- 19:12Speaker 1: recruiting process was driving him crazy, which in turn drove
- 19:16Speaker 1: us crazy. He was really hard to find, you know.
- 19:20Speaker 1: And the final, the final piece was that I wasn't
- 19:24Speaker 1: allowed to go see him anymore because college rules, once
- 19:27Speaker 1: head coach sees and visits a guy can't go back.
- 19:30Speaker 1: So our GA and our defensive line coaches very close
- 19:33Speaker 1: to the family that were actually neighbors an American Samoa um,
- 19:38Speaker 1: they went to the house. And the final piece, the
- 19:41Speaker 1: final tipping point is our GA actually put on our
- 19:44Speaker 1: mascots part of the to help tip it over. And
- 19:49Speaker 1: I don't know if it upset Piney or if it
- 19:51Speaker 1: got him to heed, but all in all it is
- 19:57Speaker 1: I don't know, it'll be more of a story as
- 19:59Speaker 1: it is the relation with that family, and I have
- 20:02Speaker 1: a feeling that well, I don't have a feeling. I
- 20:05Speaker 1: fully am fully confident that in a couple of years
- 20:08Speaker 1: of you and I we're probably having a similar conversation
- 20:11Speaker 1: about his brother, who was a freshman All American linebacker
- 20:14Speaker 1: at six foot three two unter sixty five pounds. So
- 20:17Speaker 1: that sounds like the Lee Corso recruiting technique, bring the
- 20:21Speaker 1: duck head and pull that out if you need it.
- 20:27Speaker 1: At the time it was okay. I don't know if
- 20:28Speaker 1: you could do that anymore, but here it was a
- 20:32Speaker 1: great recruiting process, and certainly blessed that that family allowed
- 20:36Speaker 1: us in their lives and it turned out like it did. Coach,
- 20:39Speaker 1: I know you've got a really busy schedule. We appreciate
- 20:41Speaker 1: your time and thanks for the insight on Piney Sewell.
- 20:44Speaker 1: I appreciate you have me and I wish you guys
- 20:46Speaker 1: a great draft. That was a pretty compelling case for
- 20:50Speaker 1: Team Sewell. Now it's Team Chase's turn as we visit
- 20:54Speaker 1: with LSU wide receivers coach Mickey Joseph, who incidentally is
- 20:58Speaker 1: the older brother a former Angles defensive backs coach and
- 21:01Speaker 1: Denver Bronco's head coach. Advanced Joseph, coach described Jamar Chase
- 21:07Speaker 1: as a person, you know, a great kid. Really enjoyed
- 21:10Speaker 1: coaching him. You know, take the shirt off his back
- 21:13Speaker 1: and give it to you if you need it. You know.
- 21:15Speaker 1: It's just always um always is always is willing to
- 21:18Speaker 1: help people, you know what I mean. When when when
- 21:21Speaker 1: it comes down to his teammates, you know, he you know,
- 21:24Speaker 1: he always treated him my damn with brothers, you know.
- 21:27Speaker 1: And that's one thing you love about him and his
- 21:30Speaker 1: family that they're good people and they they're really they're
- 21:33Speaker 1: really just the heart that they have to love, the
- 21:36Speaker 1: love that he has and his offers teammates and people
- 21:38Speaker 1: around him. He's a great kid. What do you think
- 21:42Speaker 1: are his greatest traits as a wide receiver. He plays
- 21:45Speaker 1: with power, And when I say he plays with power,
- 21:49Speaker 1: the way he catches the ball, the way the way
- 21:53Speaker 1: he wants he touched the ball once he turns into
- 21:55Speaker 1: a runner, the way he puts his foot in the
- 21:57Speaker 1: ground as a route runner. Everything he does with power,
- 22:01Speaker 1: he's releasing off the line of scrimmags, press coverage. It's
- 22:03Speaker 1: power is strength, and it's twitchiness with it, and it's
- 22:07Speaker 1: there's a red track that you twitch. You like this,
- 22:09Speaker 1: but you play with so much power because usually power
- 22:12Speaker 1: guys are not twitchy, you know, and he's a he's
- 22:15Speaker 1: a power guy, but he's twitchy also, so you know,
- 22:18Speaker 1: he's an outside guy that he can release press, you know,
- 22:21Speaker 1: if he's an outside receiver, you know, but also you
- 22:24Speaker 1: can put him in a slot and he's twitching enough
- 22:26Speaker 1: to run option routes and things of that sort. We're
- 22:29Speaker 1: talking to Mickey, Joe's at the wide receivers coach at LSU.
- 22:33Speaker 1: What did you notice in the chemistry between Joe Burrow
- 22:37Speaker 1: and Jamar a couple of years ago. Well, one thing
- 22:41Speaker 1: about Joe, and you know, you said we missed that
- 22:44Speaker 1: he was always in total control. They were always they
- 22:47Speaker 1: were always on the same page. You know, they'll do
- 22:50Speaker 1: some things in the game and it'd be off. It'd
- 22:54Speaker 1: be of course, you know, but you know they'd worked
- 22:56Speaker 1: on it. If you look at the one play with
- 22:58Speaker 1: from Alabama with Jamar couldn't get inside on a glance.
- 23:02Speaker 1: He just broke it up to feel and turn it
- 23:05Speaker 1: into like a run back, you know. And that's some
- 23:08Speaker 1: him and Joe probably worked on him, you know, but
- 23:10Speaker 1: they had really good chemistry. Joe can kind of look
- 23:13Speaker 1: at him and no way, no way, He's going to
- 23:15Speaker 1: be on the field at all time. And he had
- 23:17Speaker 1: a good feel with Joe was going to place the
- 23:18Speaker 1: ball a certain routes. That just the chemistry was just there,
- 23:22Speaker 1: you know, with with with Jamar and Joe, and it
- 23:25Speaker 1: was you know, just you mean, Joe one one of
- 23:28Speaker 1: Heisman another one. Want the politic call coach. I know
- 23:31Speaker 1: you would have loved to have him on the field
- 23:33Speaker 1: last year. But what do you think he did for
- 23:36Speaker 1: himself after deciding to opt out? Well, I think what happened,
- 23:41Speaker 1: you know, you know, just if you think about it,
- 23:44Speaker 1: if you think about with Jamar, you know, I thought
- 23:47Speaker 1: he had a chance to rest his body, you know,
- 23:51Speaker 1: because he goes, he goes hard. He practice hard. Of
- 23:54Speaker 1: you if you're to Washington practice leading up to the
- 23:57Speaker 1: weeks that he opted out, you had never known that
- 23:59Speaker 1: he was opting out. And I think it was more
- 24:01Speaker 1: of just a family decision. Um, you know he did
- 24:05Speaker 1: call back, you know, we week three and he wanted
- 24:07Speaker 1: to come back because he stayed in school. Best think
- 24:10Speaker 1: you knew he stayed in school, did he? He was
- 24:11Speaker 1: still doing the school work, trying to make sure he
- 24:13Speaker 1: gets his um gets his degree, which I was very
- 24:16Speaker 1: proud of him for that. But Ja Jamar just man
- 24:20Speaker 1: just you know, just unbelievable. You know, the things that
- 24:24Speaker 1: that that we missed when he wasn't there. But you know,
- 24:27Speaker 1: like I said, I thought he became a He was
- 24:30Speaker 1: no healthier. You know when he when he worked out,
- 24:32Speaker 1: he looked good, his body looked good, he wasn't beat up.
- 24:35Speaker 1: And um, you see the way he ran and he
- 24:37Speaker 1: plays fast like that. So I think he's just about
- 24:40Speaker 1: him testing off to Charleston because of the time that
- 24:42Speaker 1: he had off the rest of his body. Justin Jefferson
- 24:46Speaker 1: obviously had a tremendous rookie year. What does that say
- 24:50Speaker 1: about Jamara's potential ability to come right in in year
- 24:53Speaker 1: one and succeed. Well, I always say this NFL five
- 24:59Speaker 1: yard after six yards, you can't touch them. And Jets
- 25:03Speaker 1: had an unbelievable year, you know, And I think, you
- 25:06Speaker 1: know just because they were so used to being help,
- 25:09Speaker 1: you know, twenty yards down the field, all the way
- 25:10Speaker 1: down the field. And I think, you know, the NFL
- 25:13Speaker 1: group really benefits these kids because they're very explosive and
- 25:17Speaker 1: very powerful and strong. And I think, you know, Jets,
- 25:20Speaker 1: Jets had a great year, and I'm looking forward to
- 25:22Speaker 1: see what Jamar is going to do in the league,
- 25:24Speaker 1: you know, because I knew Jets had a great year.
- 25:27Speaker 1: But you know, something I expected, you know, and it
- 25:30Speaker 1: ain't too many people in the country can cover these
- 25:32Speaker 1: two kids one on one, you know, one on one
- 25:35Speaker 1: because the things that they do. But the one thing
- 25:37Speaker 1: they do well, they both can catch the ball. You know,
- 25:41Speaker 1: they can catch the ball, and they can catch you know,
- 25:43Speaker 1: they can bring in contested catches. You can be hanging
- 25:46Speaker 1: on them and they still can bring the ball in.
- 25:48Speaker 1: And they run great routes. You know, Jamara runs great routes.
- 25:50Speaker 1: So those Jets. But like I said, Jamar's like he's
- 25:53Speaker 1: more powerful. We're talking to Mickey Joe's if the wide
- 25:56Speaker 1: receivers coaching that last year. Do you have a favorite
- 25:59Speaker 1: Jamar story, a favorite Mark story. Um, it's really human
- 26:06Speaker 1: terms marshing. It was their freshman year and you know,
- 26:09Speaker 1: and I was, you know, You're like, you know, you
- 26:10Speaker 1: gotta break him in there five stars and you gotta
- 26:13Speaker 1: break him in. And we're playing Florida, and you know
- 26:15Speaker 1: a couple of things when when when when left went right,
- 26:19Speaker 1: you know, and and I didn't play him as much.
- 26:22Speaker 1: And and when I coming out and I was coming
- 26:24Speaker 1: out the locker room, I had um one of the
- 26:27Speaker 1: coaches tell them and like, hey, the chase in the
- 26:29Speaker 1: Marshal families out there waiting for you. I went back
- 26:33Speaker 1: in and kind of, you know, I'm losing my tie
- 26:36Speaker 1: because I know they were very disappointed that they didn't play.
- 26:38Speaker 1: But it was it was growing pains for him the
- 26:40Speaker 1: freshman year. And the funny thing about it that I
- 26:44Speaker 1: told both sets of parents that if you trust what
- 26:47Speaker 1: I'm doing with your kids, one day, we're gonna sit
- 26:50Speaker 1: back and laugh about it. And uh, and y'all gonna
- 26:53Speaker 1: y'all all gonna be rich. You know, you're gonna have
- 26:55Speaker 1: more money than you have now. And and at pro
- 26:58Speaker 1: day we all laughed about that, you know, because they
- 27:01Speaker 1: you know, they didn't understand. And I do take I
- 27:04Speaker 1: do take my time with them, you know, I put
- 27:06Speaker 1: them out there to see just so much I can
- 27:08Speaker 1: get out of them, you know. And I think that
- 27:11Speaker 1: Jamara learned from that, Terrence learned from that that now
- 27:15Speaker 1: coming in the door the rookie year, they they're not
- 27:17Speaker 1: going to come in saying, oh, I don't have to
- 27:19Speaker 1: do this ones, I'm just going to get open. They're
- 27:21Speaker 1: gonna come in doing I gotta use my technique, I
- 27:23Speaker 1: gotta run good routes, I got to see the ball,
- 27:25Speaker 1: I got to do don't lose the technique stuff. And
- 27:28Speaker 1: I think they learned that from the freshman year when
- 27:30Speaker 1: they came in they just going to put on natural ability.
- 27:33Speaker 1: But now when we have guys like you know Greaty
- 27:35Speaker 1: Waves here, you know from Folk here, and you know
- 27:38Speaker 1: Stingley here, we got dudes here, you know. So I
- 27:41Speaker 1: think they learn learn from that, and I think it's
- 27:43Speaker 1: going to help him. At the beginning of the NFL career,
- 27:46Speaker 1: I spoke to Chris Blair, the radio voice of the Tigers,
- 27:49Speaker 1: and he was telling me about the Summer of ten
- 27:52Speaker 1: thousand Passes, where these wide receivers literally committed to catch
- 27:57Speaker 1: ten thousand passes during the course of the summer. What
- 28:01Speaker 1: does that say about the group that you've been coaching
- 28:03Speaker 1: at LFU. Well, it was something that Joe Brady. Joe
- 28:07Speaker 1: Brady came in here. When Joe Brady came in, he
- 28:09Speaker 1: bought it here and we asked the guys to catch
- 28:13Speaker 1: ten thousand, ten thousand balls from spring up until to know,
- 28:18Speaker 1: from the end of spring until the first until we
- 28:22Speaker 1: report for training camp and um, and it was they
- 28:25Speaker 1: they tried to do it, you know, I think some
- 28:27Speaker 1: of them got up to like eight thousand. And we
- 28:29Speaker 1: did the same thing this year right before spring ball.
- 28:31Speaker 1: We get him three months to catch five thousand balls.
- 28:33Speaker 1: So we do we put you know, put emphasis and
- 28:36Speaker 1: all that, and well we'll come back right after spring
- 28:39Speaker 1: balls over Saturday when Sunday was stought. There ten thousand
- 28:42Speaker 1: ball quests. So you came Joe Brady brought that here
- 28:45Speaker 1: and I thought, you know, it was really good. It's
- 28:47Speaker 1: not just catching catching ball. You can catch tennis balls,
- 28:51Speaker 1: you know, as long as you're catching the ball, they
- 28:52Speaker 1: can they can. We tell them they can be in
- 28:54Speaker 1: the backyard with their girlfriend and she can get tossed
- 28:56Speaker 1: into tennis ball to him. Because it's a hand eye
- 28:58Speaker 1: coordination that we're working on in hand flexibility being to
- 29:02Speaker 1: squeeze the ball and have strong hands. And so the
- 29:05Speaker 1: boys did that and that you know, so that's one
- 29:07Speaker 1: thing that we do here now. But um, you know,
- 29:11Speaker 1: he had to take your hats off to him. They
- 29:13Speaker 1: was out there every day catching balls, and I think
- 29:15Speaker 1: that that helped him. So Jamar is obviously going to
- 29:19Speaker 1: be a top ten draft pick, and Terris Marshall could
- 29:22Speaker 1: be a first round pick as well. If he doesn't
- 29:24Speaker 1: go on the first, he'll certainly be gone by the
- 29:26Speaker 1: end of the second. What kind of an NFL prospect
- 29:29Speaker 1: is Terris Marshall? Well, Terns. I think Terence is a
- 29:33Speaker 1: kid that you know, he can play X, F or Z,
- 29:39Speaker 1: he can play all three. And I think Terence is
- 29:43Speaker 1: you know, real twitchy for a six six, two sixty
- 29:46Speaker 1: three kid. He's got really good hands, you see, He's
- 29:48Speaker 1: got long ball speed that he can go get the
- 29:50Speaker 1: big ball. And I think, you know, he I think
- 29:53Speaker 1: with Terence, the Terns is on another football team. With
- 29:58Speaker 1: just him, he would he would have been f you know,
- 30:00Speaker 1: like you know, like Ceedee Lamp. He was the only
- 30:02Speaker 1: one that oh YouTube, you know, go use. So the
- 30:05Speaker 1: Terns had to play with Jamar Clyde justin you know,
- 30:13Speaker 1: Thaddeus Moss, so he kind of you know, and we
- 30:16Speaker 1: never had the first option second apptate. We just called plays,
- 30:19Speaker 1: you know, we called plays and who helped a stoption
- 30:21Speaker 1: st option. But at one point Terrence was leading the
- 30:24Speaker 1: country with nine touchdowns in three weeks. So terms best
- 30:28Speaker 1: football's ahead of them. And I know last year, you know,
- 30:31Speaker 1: on film, you know, he looked like he took some
- 30:33Speaker 1: plays off, but you know he was. He was beat
- 30:35Speaker 1: up sometimes, you know, because you know, practice hard and play,
- 30:39Speaker 1: you know, and we you know, so but I think
- 30:41Speaker 1: his best football is ahead of him. And I'm excited
- 30:43Speaker 1: to see him because he's a He's a kid that
- 30:45Speaker 1: can catch the ball and can run and can get open,
- 30:47Speaker 1: you know, but think about what he brings. He can play,
- 30:50Speaker 1: he can play all three. He can play X position
- 30:52Speaker 1: and F position and his Z position because he's played
- 30:54Speaker 1: all three here in the l Ship. So I'm excited
- 30:56Speaker 1: to see what Terrence is gonna do. Like all right,
- 30:59Speaker 1: obviously I got told him last year about jets. I
- 31:02Speaker 1: think these two kids are the top, the top in
- 31:04Speaker 1: the top twnity drifts. You know, I know them other kids,
- 31:07Speaker 1: but I look at those other kids and I'm like,
- 31:09Speaker 1: they don't play against the heat. These kids played against
- 31:12Speaker 1: every week, you know what. I mean, one kid at
- 31:14Speaker 1: Alabama deal, you know, But I just think that these
- 31:17Speaker 1: two kids are big a statue and then they're strong,
- 31:20Speaker 1: you know, and they're not going to dig out, They're
- 31:22Speaker 1: not going to get knocked around. And in terms of
- 31:25Speaker 1: you know, the terms of a kid that size who
- 31:27Speaker 1: can do things like that, that's special. A couple more
- 31:30Speaker 1: questions for Mickey Joe's if the wide receivers coach at LSU,
- 31:33Speaker 1: you referenced Thaddius Moss. The Bengals just picked him up yesterday,
- 31:38Speaker 1: the day before this conversation. Do you think Joe Burrow
- 31:41Speaker 1: can help bring out the best in Thaddius as an
- 31:44Speaker 1: NFL player? I think I think he can't. And I'll
- 31:48Speaker 1: tell people this. You know, Daddy's just probably one of
- 31:50Speaker 1: the smartest football players I've ever been around. He's one
- 31:52Speaker 1: of the kids. He's got some of the best hands,
- 31:54Speaker 1: he runs some of the best routes. But he's a
- 31:56Speaker 1: I mean, he's an every down tight end, you know,
- 31:58Speaker 1: He's an every down tight and like you can leave
- 32:00Speaker 1: him in on third down he would pass block, you
- 32:02Speaker 1: can run routes. You know, you see to catch you
- 32:04Speaker 1: meet against Alabama, that's unbelievable, you know. But think about
- 32:08Speaker 1: Daddy's statis and got some dog int and he's gonna
- 32:10Speaker 1: get after you. And I think, you know, just you know,
- 32:12Speaker 1: just being around Joe again, that's going to help him also,
- 32:15Speaker 1: and as another person that Joe trust, you know, because
- 32:17Speaker 1: Joe really trust Daddy was your knew that was that
- 32:20Speaker 1: that was Joe's safety, you know, safety that and he
- 32:23Speaker 1: had to check him down. He was going to Faddy's
- 32:25Speaker 1: new Faddis is gonna catch you, you know. So I'm
- 32:27Speaker 1: proud of days. I'm excited for him, and you know,
- 32:30Speaker 1: I'm having Joe trying to get the band back together.
- 32:33Speaker 1: Final question, coach, and I appreciate your time. If you
- 32:36Speaker 1: pulled Bengals fans right now, I think there's a pretty
- 32:39Speaker 1: even split. About half of them would like to see
- 32:42Speaker 1: the team select Pinay Sue, the offensive lineman from Oregon.
- 32:45Speaker 1: The other half are hoping they'll take Jamar Chase number five. Overall,
- 32:49Speaker 1: you obviously are not exactly a neutral party here, but
- 32:53Speaker 1: what would the Bengals be getting if they select Jamar
- 32:56Speaker 1: Chase with a fifth pick? I think I think you're
- 32:59Speaker 1: getting the playmaker, a guy that not only can move
- 33:03Speaker 1: to change, the guy that can get in the end
- 33:06Speaker 1: zone when he is the red zone. He's a big
- 33:08Speaker 1: time red zone threat. And I think, um, it's a
- 33:12Speaker 1: guy Joe Joe play with, you know. And I think
- 33:15Speaker 1: one thing about quarterbacks, they got to be comfortable with
- 33:17Speaker 1: the guys that they're around, you know. And these guys
- 33:20Speaker 1: got chemistry together, You're like, you know, they played together
- 33:23Speaker 1: for two years, so they kind of can look at
- 33:25Speaker 1: each other and say, Okay, that's what he's about to do.
- 33:28Speaker 1: And they trust in each other. And I think one
- 33:30Speaker 1: thing with you more, you're getting the hell of a player.
- 33:33Speaker 1: A kid that refused to lose. You know, he refused
- 33:36Speaker 1: to lose. He never lost in playground, he never lost
- 33:38Speaker 1: in high school, he never lost in college. So what
- 33:41Speaker 1: you getting you getting winners, you know, And that's part
- 33:43Speaker 1: of that's part of any culture. It's about when you
- 33:45Speaker 1: when you talk about college college programs, and you talk
- 33:49Speaker 1: about NFL organizations, it's about the culture. You know, in
- 33:53Speaker 1: the culture here to ell shoot that we win. And
- 33:56Speaker 1: that's what those kids are gonna bring over that they're
- 33:57Speaker 1: gonna bring over the attitude like, hey, any means necessarily
- 34:00Speaker 1: we win in this game. And one thing had LSU
- 34:02Speaker 1: we always say, focus on winning the game. You know
- 34:05Speaker 1: a guy there was that sense and they Kevin Carr
- 34:07Speaker 1: brought that to us. You know what I'm saying that
- 34:09Speaker 1: hey focused on winning the game. So here the LSU,
- 34:11Speaker 1: we focus on winning the game. And that's what That's
- 34:14Speaker 1: what Jamar is gonna bring to the table that he's
- 34:16Speaker 1: gonna do everything in his power. Don't care if he's
- 34:18Speaker 1: got to go block a punt, he's gotta run, kicks back,
- 34:21Speaker 1: whatever he's got to do, he's gonna do to make
- 34:23Speaker 1: sure his team wins the game. And one thing he
- 34:26Speaker 1: don't need all the credit. He just gets out there
- 34:28Speaker 1: and he plays. You know, he's just gonna get out
- 34:30Speaker 1: there and play. And I would love to see, you
- 34:32Speaker 1: know what, all those kids back together because I know
- 34:34Speaker 1: what those I know what that is. I always say
- 34:36Speaker 1: that's points. You know with Joe Burrow and Daddy, us
- 34:40Speaker 1: Mars and Jamar and Chase. Maybe you get Terrins down
- 34:43Speaker 1: the line and you know that's that's points. You know,
- 34:46Speaker 1: that's points because you know the kids don't They're gonna
- 34:49Speaker 1: find a way to get open and they're gonna find
- 34:50Speaker 1: a way to win. Coach outstanding stuff. I can't thank
- 34:53Speaker 1: you enough, appreciate your time and best of luck this
- 34:55Speaker 1: year with the Tigers. Thank you, thank you. Good luck
- 34:58Speaker 1: to you guys in the draft. Previously devoted entire episodes
