Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, it's Wednesday, Good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to the program
- 0:02Speaker 1: here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone. My
- 0:05Speaker 1: name is Craig Way. Glad to have you with us,
- 0:07Speaker 1: and we're with you up until five o'clock this afternoon.
- 0:12Speaker 1: And us, of course includes the producer of this program,
- 0:16Speaker 1: Cameron D.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Parker. The D on the birth certificate stands for Dallas.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Yes, as in the name of his favorite pro football
- 0:23Speaker 1: It's not just it wasn't just by coincidence. Your dad
- 0:27Speaker 1: and mom negotiated this, right. Your dad wanted Dallas to
- 0:33Speaker 1: be your first name, and your mom kind of stood
- 0:36Speaker 1: firm on it not being your first name.
- 0:38Speaker 2: God, I'm glad someone had sense between those two. So
- 0:45Speaker 2: it became your middle name.
- 0:46Speaker 1: But it was because of your dad's loyalty, least at
- 0:49Speaker 1: the time to the Dallas Cowboys.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Right.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Well, they were just going off of their what fifth
- 0:55Speaker 3: Super Bowl championship, right, yeah?
- 0:57Speaker 2: Five?
- 0:57Speaker 1: They were just like two years removed from it is
- 0:59Speaker 1: all right, ninety five season. You were born in November
- 1:03Speaker 1: of ninety seven, yeah, so it was just a couple
- 1:05Speaker 1: of years after that, so the Cowboys were still a
- 1:07Speaker 1: viable team. They made the playoffs that year, a friend,
- 1:09Speaker 1: Dave Garrett was doing their play by play at the time,
- 1:12Speaker 1: while Brad Sham had taken a break from them, was
- 1:14Speaker 1: doing the Rangers, and then Brad eventually came back to
- 1:16Speaker 1: the Cowboys.
- 1:17Speaker 2: But you so.
- 1:20Speaker 1: You were named in honor of the Dallas Cowboys, correct?
- 1:24Speaker 2: I think so?
- 1:25Speaker 3: I mean the middle Land At this point, we just
- 1:26Speaker 3: gotta get my dad on the show and you didn't.
- 1:28Speaker 3: You can pester him about that.
- 1:29Speaker 2: You know what I'm gonna do. That's in Portugal right now.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Is he really was in the single Bachelor life?
- 1:36Speaker 1: Is that out there hanging out and in Lisbon or
- 1:40Speaker 1: Porto or any of those other plays something like that.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Okay, well, good on him.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Okay, So all right, when when when the time comes,
- 1:48Speaker 1: we'll we'll get him in the studio and we'll we'll.
- 1:51Speaker 2: We'll talk about the stump button ready just in case.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, So there are a lot of things
- 1:57Speaker 1: to discuss on the program, but I'm gonna lead off
- 2:00Speaker 1: with the thing speakin of the Dallas Cowboys, something that's
- 2:06Speaker 1: going to disappoint you as the long suffering Cowboys fan
- 2:12Speaker 1: that you are, and you are ready to reclaim your
- 2:15Speaker 1: fandom as soon as Jerry Jones parts company with Mike McCarthy.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Correct depending on who he hires.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Okay, and this is where I'm going with this, because
- 2:25Speaker 1: you were hoping, thinking, projecting, predicting that it might be
- 2:29Speaker 1: Bill Belichick. Now it looks like it's getting pretty close
- 2:33Speaker 1: to Bill Belichick returning to coaching, but at the collegiate level,
- 2:38Speaker 1: to be the head coach of the North Carolina tar Heels.
- 2:42Speaker 1: I thought about putting this in inconceivable because you know,
- 2:45Speaker 1: it almost seemed like it was.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Now it's really weird about this because.
- 2:50Speaker 1: There's one report that's coming down I think from on three.
- 2:56Speaker 1: I guess it is where they flat out called it.
- 2:58Speaker 1: It's like calling the election early. Their headline was North
- 3:02Speaker 1: Carolina names Bill Belichick next head coach.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Really that's their headline, Okay, because the ESPN right now
- 3:08Speaker 3: is reporting that the ball is in his court.
- 3:11Speaker 1: On three is saying North Carolina names Bill Belichick next
- 3:16Speaker 1: head coach, So they must be that confident that it's
- 3:20Speaker 1: going to happen. But to Cameron's point, the headline on
- 3:24Speaker 1: ESPN dot Com says sources Belichick and UNC work on
- 3:29Speaker 1: issues before potential higher and their lead in the story
- 3:35Speaker 1: is North Carolina is working to try to close the
- 3:40Speaker 1: deal with Bill Belichick to make the six time Super
- 3:42Speaker 1: Bowl champion the Tari Hills coach, but sources told ESPN
- 3:47Speaker 1: there are still issues that both sides need to work through.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Sources added that the ball is in Belichick's court and
- 3:54Speaker 1: that North Carolina officials are on board with him becoming
- 3:57Speaker 1: the coach. A resolution expected in the near few And
- 4:00Speaker 1: so you're going, so what are the issues? If there
- 4:02Speaker 1: are issues, what might those issues? Well, according to this report,
- 4:08Speaker 1: among the looming issues are the potential role for his
- 4:11Speaker 1: son and current Washington defensive coordinator Stephen Belichick.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Also North Carolina's.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Name, image and likeness resources and they're nil things. Also
- 4:24Speaker 1: Belichick's salary and the resources for the staff and the
- 4:28Speaker 1: reporting structure. Talks between the two have been going on
- 4:32Speaker 1: at least since last week. You know, Belichick, you know,
- 4:37Speaker 1: said he was pretty coy about it when he was
- 4:40Speaker 1: on pack McAfee the other day. And we'll see how
- 4:42Speaker 1: that goes. Here's my question, if he gets the job,
- 4:47Speaker 1: is he going to be exactly the same Bill Belichick,
- 4:51Speaker 1: they're curmudgeonly Bill Belichick down the stretch, or really be
- 4:55Speaker 1: the more affable, fun loving one that shows up on
- 5:00Speaker 1: the Manning cast on Monday Night. I'm betting it's the
- 5:02Speaker 1: former when he's coaching again. I mean, how long will
- 5:06Speaker 1: it be before he here to say we're on the
- 5:09Speaker 1: wake Forest, you know, or something like that. You know,
- 5:11Speaker 1: and like Belichick that were on the was on the Cincinnati.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Wasn't it? Yep, on the Cincinnati. We're on the Cincinnati
- 5:17Speaker 2: and he I'm saying, we're on the Clemson, We're on
- 5:22Speaker 2: the Virginia, you.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Know, something like that. I don't know, but looks close
- 5:27Speaker 1: that he could be. He's seventy two. Back Brown is
- 5:31Speaker 1: what seventy four?
- 5:35Speaker 2: I think? Do they just let go? I think he's
- 5:38Speaker 2: seventy seventy three. Seventy seventy four in August of next year?
- 5:42Speaker 1: Okay, all right, yeah, so so he's seventy three.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Here's Belichick seventy two.
- 5:48Speaker 1: You know, he's worked in the NFL in some capacity
- 5:51Speaker 1: from nineteen seventy five until he parted company with the
- 5:55Speaker 1: Patriots following last season.
- 5:58Speaker 2: So it's going to be interesting.
- 6:02Speaker 1: I do think that, by the way, and I'm not
- 6:04Speaker 1: saying this is not going to happen because it looks
- 6:06Speaker 1: like I said, threes calling it. They're saying it has happened,
- 6:10Speaker 1: and I'm not saying it's not going to happen. But
- 6:16Speaker 1: some of these issues I think could be problematic. The
- 6:22Speaker 1: salary is something I think they would work through. I
- 6:24Speaker 1: don't think that's that big an issue. The resources for
- 6:28Speaker 1: the staff and the reporting structure, that's a little more work.
- 6:35Speaker 1: The deal with getting his son in as a defensive coordinator.
- 6:38Speaker 1: And then most importantly, I think is the NIL thing.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Because they in North Carolina is not ranking near the
- 6:47Speaker 1: top in terms of NFL NIL expenditures. What was the
- 6:52Speaker 1: deal that we saw. I think you probably saw it.
- 6:56Speaker 1: I saw it as well. It was on social media
- 6:58Speaker 1: about n C estimated NIL expenditures and Texas was like
- 7:04Speaker 1: number one at twenty two million dollars something like that.
- 7:07Speaker 1: That's that's yeah, I didn't see them on the list.
- 7:10Speaker 1: And that's for the entirety of the athletic program. Now,
- 7:15Speaker 1: you and I know that the vast majority of it
- 7:17Speaker 1: would probably be football related, and that there is also
- 7:21Speaker 1: basketball related and some of the other things as well,
- 7:24Speaker 1: But that's that's a lot of coin's a lot of money,
- 7:28Speaker 1: so and and I understand the other side of it,
- 7:31Speaker 1: and folks say, yeah, but when you bring in two
- 7:33Speaker 1: hundred million a year, is that you know, there's capital
- 7:37Speaker 1: projects and things like that, and ongoing there's there's there's
- 7:40Speaker 1: a payroll to meet. There are bills to be paid,
- 7:43Speaker 1: no doubt about it. But I don't know what North
- 7:49Speaker 1: Carolina's NIL commitment would be to football. It obviously has
- 7:55Speaker 1: to be big for basketball, one would imagine, but of
- 7:58Speaker 1: course basketball you don't have as many male's defeat, so
- 8:00Speaker 1: to speak. So it's gonna be interesting to follow this
- 8:05Speaker 1: probably over the next twenty four to forty eight hours,
- 8:07Speaker 1: maybe sooner. Maybe we have an answer by late this
- 8:09Speaker 1: afternoon or tonight or tomorrow morning.
- 8:13Speaker 3: Haven't got the breaking news notification yet from the athletic
- 8:17Speaker 3: or ESPN.
- 8:18Speaker 2: I'll wait on that. Yeah, I mean I trust on three.
- 8:20Speaker 3: But until one of those, you know, you would think
- 8:22Speaker 3: that maybe like Pete Thammeil or yeah, something like that
- 8:25Speaker 3: would break there. Felman Feldman, Yeah, exactly. But also I
- 8:28Speaker 3: mean with Belichick's NFL size, that could be a you know,
- 8:31Speaker 3: a chefty type of break.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:34Speaker 1: And he's been working it too, and and uh, and
- 8:37Speaker 1: there's been a lot of speculation about you know, what
- 8:40Speaker 1: could this guy do?
- 8:41Speaker 2: I mean, how how good might he be on this?
- 8:46Speaker 1: You know, it's a seventy two year old man who's
- 8:48Speaker 1: been in the NFL for the last fifty years, and
- 8:52Speaker 1: I's gonna try to do a college nobody.
- 8:53Speaker 2: They haven't tried this before.
- 8:55Speaker 1: A Bill Wash remember after he retire from the forty
- 9:00Speaker 1: arms king back and coach Stanford. Really I didn't know that, actually, yeah,
- 9:03Speaker 1: and I think he went seventeen seventeen and one. An
- 9:07Speaker 1: even bigger reach was the Saint Louis Football Cardinals. This
- 9:12Speaker 1: is in the late seventies. I believe brought back the
- 9:15Speaker 1: old immortal Bud Wilkinson, the former OU coach from the
- 9:19Speaker 1: forties and fifties and early sixties, who then I guess
- 9:23Speaker 1: became a congressman or something, and then it was a
- 9:25Speaker 1: television commentator. In fact, he was working the shootout game
- 9:30Speaker 1: Texas Arkansas with Chris Shankel there on December sixth, nineteen
- 9:33Speaker 1: sixty nine.
- 9:34Speaker 2: The Cardinals hired him. That did not know, well, I mean,
- 9:38Speaker 2: the most the most likely scenario here, Craig is that
- 9:42Speaker 2: he has one good year, he has one OK year,
- 9:44Speaker 2: he has one bad year, and then that's that. Maybe
- 9:47Speaker 2: his son takes over or you and c support directors
- 9:50Speaker 2: are so tired of him they push him out, you know.
- 9:52Speaker 1: And that might be maybe onto something there that might
- 9:56Speaker 1: be part of the negotiating thing is that Belichick comes
- 9:59Speaker 1: in as the head coach. Coach Steven Belichick is the
- 10:02Speaker 1: coaching waiting They don't Yeah, I would understand, you know,
- 10:05Speaker 1: as a program not wanting to agree to that.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Commit to that, right, yeah, yeah, exactly, all right.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Also, coming up on the program in the three o'clock hour,
- 10:15Speaker 1: in the four o'clock hour, both hours, the three o'clock hour,
- 10:18Speaker 1: in the four o'clock hour, we'll hear from Vick Schaeffer,
- 10:23Speaker 1: Texas women's basketball coach. Like we said, Longhorn's played tonight, Vic,
- 10:27Speaker 1: as you know from the times that he's been on
- 10:30Speaker 1: my programs in the past, and when I was doing
- 10:32Speaker 1: the morning show, it was a lot easier, dude, because
- 10:34Speaker 1: this show falls smack dab in the middle of the
- 10:38Speaker 1: regular practice routine and also shoot around on game day,
- 10:45Speaker 1: all of those things. And that's why our opportunities with
- 10:48Speaker 1: him have been diminished in terms of live conversations. However,
- 10:53Speaker 1: he does those media zooms and we've availed ourselves to
- 10:56Speaker 1: that and it's it's got some to it, both in
- 11:02Speaker 1: its content and in its length. So what we're gonna
- 11:04Speaker 1: do is gonna bring you the first part of it
- 11:07Speaker 1: in the three o'clock hour and the second part of
- 11:09Speaker 1: it in the four o'clock hour. Because there's good stuff
- 11:12Speaker 1: both on the front end and the back ends, really
- 11:14Speaker 1: good stuff in there. We didn't want to just you know,
- 11:17Speaker 1: try to, you know, blow up the format by running
- 11:21Speaker 1: running all you know, the entire length of the deal.
- 11:24Speaker 1: So anyway they'll be, there'll be parts of it in
- 11:26Speaker 1: each So that's where we are with it, and we'll
- 11:30Speaker 1: do that. We got some pro football notes to get
- 11:33Speaker 1: to some NBA. Yes, the quarterfinals underway in the Emirates
- 11:40Speaker 1: NBA Cup, or as Kevin Harlan called it at one
- 11:42Speaker 1: point last night, and the NBA Emirates Cup. No steal
- 11:47Speaker 1: a way around. Emirates is the sponsor?
- 11:49Speaker 3: Are they going to change the name every season because
- 11:51Speaker 3: last year it was the nd season tournament it was
- 11:53Speaker 3: now it was the NBA Cup. I don't think I
- 11:54Speaker 3: like either one really really well, you got Emirates as
- 11:57Speaker 3: your sponsor. I do like when the thunderbat the Mavericks, though,
- 12:00Speaker 3: yeah you have and they looked good last night. Boy,
- 12:04Speaker 3: they did look impressive. We'll talk about that some other
- 12:06Speaker 3: topics as well.
- 12:07Speaker 1: Uh here, And you can always avail yourself with the

- 12:22Speaker 1: you know, whatever, say I think Bill Belichick in North
- 12:24Speaker 1: Carolina would be a horrible mistake, or I think it'd
- 12:27Speaker 1: be a great move for car whatever, whatever, whatever.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Topic you choose, and't have to be that.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Whatever topic, you text the word Texas follow by your
