- 1:28Speaker 1: This portion of the program is brought to you by
- 1:31Speaker 1: the Dollar Floor Store.
- 1:33Speaker 4: We've got a couple of things coming up.
- 1:36Speaker 1: We're going to revisit a bone fishing trip in Belize
- 1:40Speaker 1: about a year and a half ago, and then we're
- 1:42Speaker 1: going to revisit the new trout speckled trout regulations. And
- 1:49Speaker 1: this has been about a year and a half as well.
- 1:53Speaker 1: UH from Louisiana and from the state of Texas with
- 1:57Speaker 1: Chester Moore and his hire calling podcasts.
- 2:01Speaker 4: But I saw this story today. A Washington man the state.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Of Washington who conspired to hunt and kill bald and
- 2:13Speaker 1: golden eagles and hawks on the Flathead Indian Reservation to
- 2:19Speaker 1: sell on the black market was sentenced to three years
- 2:23Speaker 1: and ten months in prison, to be followed by three
- 2:26Speaker 1: years of supervised probation and order to pay seven hundred
- 2:30Speaker 1: and seventy seven thousand, two hundred and fifty dollars in restitution.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Travis John Branson of Cusick, Washington, He's forty nine, formerly
- 2:42Speaker 1: of the Flathead Reservation, pleaded guilty this past March to conspiracy,
- 2:48Speaker 1: two counts of unlawful trafficking of bald and golden eagles,
- 2:53Speaker 1: a violation of the Laciac prohibiting interstate trade in wildlife
- 2:58Speaker 1: which has been taken, possessed, transported, or sold in violation
- 3:01Speaker 1: of state or federal law. The Lacy Act also prohibits
- 3:06Speaker 1: any person from making or submitting any false record, account, label, for,
- 3:12Speaker 1: or identification of wildlife that has been or was intended
- 3:16Speaker 1: to be transported. US District Judge Dana Christensen, presiding the court,
- 3:21Speaker 1: order Branson to self report to.
- 3:24Speaker 4: The Bureau of Prisons. US attorney.
- 3:29Speaker 1: One of the US attorneys involved, Jesse Laslovich, said the
- 3:34Speaker 1: bald eagle, adopted as America's national symbol in seventeen eighty two,
- 3:42Speaker 1: represents our country's core ideals of freedom, strength, and justice.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Once on the brink of extinction, eagles recovered only because
- 3:49Speaker 1: of conservation efforts by the American people and federal laws
- 3:53Speaker 1: protecting them. None of that mattered to Travis Branson. Instead,
- 3:58Speaker 1: Branson went on a self described killing sprees for thousands
- 4:03Speaker 1: of eagles and hawks, butchered them, sold the parts and
- 4:09Speaker 1: feathers for profit on the black market. He knew he
- 4:13Speaker 1: was committing felonies and joked his cost to kill them
- 4:17Speaker 1: was the price of a bullet, but his conduct was
- 4:21Speaker 1: no laughing matter. With today's sentence, the cost of Branson
- 4:25Speaker 1: was more than a bunch of bullets. He forfeited the
- 4:28Speaker 1: very freedom the bald eagles sybolizes. The unlawful killing of
- 4:33Speaker 1: these majestic birds violates federal law and as a profound
- 4:37Speaker 1: offense against our nation's cherished natural heritage. According to Edward Grace,
- 4:43Speaker 1: Assistant director of US Fish and Wildlife Services for Law Enforcement,
- 4:48Speaker 1: Travis Bradson's blatant disregard for the law and the sanctity
- 4:54Speaker 1: of these protected species highlights the urgent need for stringent
- 4:58Speaker 1: enforcement greater public life awareness regarding wildlife trafficking. His actions
- 5:04Speaker 1: are particularly egregious considering the significant number of bald and
- 5:08Speaker 1: golden eagles he killed for personal profit. Such behavior will
- 5:12Speaker 1: not be tolerated. We will continue to work closely with
- 5:17Speaker 1: our law enforcement partners to protect America's wildlife and hold
- 5:21Speaker 1: accountable all who are engaged in these activities. Confederated Sleish
- 5:29Speaker 1: and Kootin Eye Tribes Chairman Mike Dolson says we're going
- 5:32Speaker 1: to feel the impacts of the Flathead Reservation's raptor loss
- 5:36Speaker 1: for years to come. We hope this helps put a
- 5:39Speaker 1: stop to illegal poaching on our homelands and gives these
- 5:42Speaker 1: birds a chance to recover. Eagles are not only a
- 5:46Speaker 1: treasured important part of the reservation's ecosystem, they have a
- 5:51Speaker 1: profound place in.
- 5:53Speaker 4: The cultural and spiritual practices.
- 5:55Speaker 1: In court documents, the government alleges that between jail January
- 6:00Speaker 1: of twenty fifteen until around March of twenty twenty one,
- 6:06Speaker 1: Branson and others hunted and killed eagles in the Flathead Reservation.
- 6:13Speaker 1: He then sold the eagles on the black market across
- 6:17Speaker 1: the US and elsewhere. Traveling from Washington to the Flathead
- 6:22Speaker 1: Reservation where he met CO defended Simon Paul. Branson and
- 6:26Speaker 1: Paul would shoot, transport, and ship bald and golden eagles
- 6:32Speaker 1: for future black market sales. CO defendant Paul remains a fugitive.
- 6:40Speaker 1: The government sought restitution of five thousand dollars per eagle
- 6:45Speaker 1: seventeen hundred and fifty dollars per hawk. The government estimates
- 6:51Speaker 1: between twenty oh nine and twenty twenty one, Branson made
- 6:55Speaker 1: between one hundred eighty thousand and three hundred sixty thousand
- 6:59Speaker 1: dollars by selling eagles, feathers and parts for profit on
- 7:06Speaker 1: the black market.
- 7:08Speaker 4: Who's buying this stuff?
- 7:10Speaker 1: The government's in investigation showed Branson and others killed approximately
- 7:16Speaker 1: three thousand, six hundred birds. At least one hundred eighteen
- 7:22Speaker 1: eagles and one hundred seven hawks killed were directly traceable
- 7:26Speaker 1: to Branson and documented through his own text messages. Branson
- 7:32Speaker 1: had taken up to nine eagles at a time. A
- 7:36Speaker 1: photograph shows nine sets of feathers, with one stacked on
- 7:40Speaker 1: top of the other. Law enforcement recovered text messages from
- 7:45Speaker 1: Branson stating he was specifically looking to shoot a baby eagle.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Not only did he kill eagles, he butchered them into
- 7:54Speaker 1: pieces to sell. In March of twenty twenty one, Branson
- 7:59Speaker 1: shot killed a golden eagle. Law enforcement stopped and recovered
- 8:04Speaker 1: the vehicle, defeat and feathers, and recovered the remainder carcass
- 8:10Speaker 1: in the field. Branson knew killing and selling eagles was
- 8:14Speaker 1: illegal and that he did not have a permit. When
- 8:17Speaker 1: negotiating a purchase price for eagle feathers, Branson said, I
- 8:22Speaker 1: don't get him for free. Though out here committing felonies.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Branson told another potential buyer, he would obtain another eagle
- 8:30Speaker 1: tale by going on a killing spree. Further, he acknowledged
- 8:35Speaker 1: that international shipping was illegal. I just get him for
- 8:40Speaker 1: ninety nine cents price of a bullet, l ol, said
- 8:44Speaker 1: one text message. The US Attorney's Office, US Fish and
- 8:50Speaker 1: Wildlife Service, the Kutinae Tribes Fishing Game Department all helped
- 8:57Speaker 1: in this investigator. I don't know what to say about that.
- 9:05Speaker 1: That's disgusting. It's disgusting that there's a market for that,
- 9:13Speaker 1: but it's a discuss. It's more disgusting that people are
- 9:16Speaker 1: just willing to go out and shoot bald eagles. It's
- 9:25Speaker 1: it's crazy. I got to tell you, I'm surprised he
- 9:29Speaker 1: to get more prison time three years and ten months.
- 9:32Speaker 1: He probably won't spend all of that time.
- 9:36Speaker 4: The payment of.
- 9:36Speaker 1: The restitution three quarters of a million dollars certainly is substantial.
- 9:46Speaker 1: I mean, if he's they said he made, you know,
- 9:52Speaker 1: between one hundred and eighty and three hundred and sixty
- 9:54Speaker 1: thousand dollars, that's an eleven year, twelve year period.
- 9:58Speaker 4: That's not.
- 10:00Speaker 1: You know, get rich money. It doesn't say anything about firearms.
- 10:11Speaker 1: I'm assuming in cases like this. We've read nothing mis egregious.
- 10:17Speaker 1: But the guy's guns are taken away and they need
- 10:22Speaker 1: to be by the way. You you know, I'm a
- 10:26Speaker 1: freedom guy, right, but somebody like this, No, absolutely not.
- 10:34Speaker 4: They're outlaws.
- 10:36Speaker 1: They don't deserve the freedom to carry any kind of
- 10:39Speaker 1: gun ever after something that idiotic.
- 10:44Speaker 4: I mean, that's just it's crazy.
- 10:50Speaker 7: Ah.
- 10:50Speaker 4: All kinds of people, all kinds of stupid people. So
- 10:57Speaker 4: let me do this.
- 10:58Speaker 1: When a New Jersey housekeeper was attacked by a coyote
- 11:03Speaker 1: Monday afternoon while outside with the family dog.
- 11:07Speaker 4: This is in New York.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Thirty one year old victim in the backyard of a
- 11:12Speaker 1: home in the Woodcliffe Lake subdivision that connects a nature
- 11:17Speaker 1: preserved when the animal pounced on her, wounded her shoulder, arm,
- 11:22Speaker 1: leg and back. The homeowner can be seen on a
- 11:25Speaker 1: video running outside to fight off the coyote, which fled
- 11:29Speaker 1: after also attacking the family dog. The dog's okay. The
- 11:35Speaker 1: housekeeper has to have RABI shots. It's not known if
- 11:40Speaker 1: the coyote is rabbid because they hadn't caught it yet.
- 11:44Speaker 1: New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection advises to avoid feeding coyotes, foxes,
- 11:51Speaker 1: and other wild animals. Well, that's wonderful advice. Clearing brush
- 11:57Speaker 1: and weeds can produce the potential for coyotes. I had
- 12:00Speaker 1: a close encounter with a possum last night in my backyard,
- 12:06Speaker 1: and I think some of you may or may not
- 12:09Speaker 1: be proud of me. I keep a little baby gun
- 12:12Speaker 1: there to ward off squirrels at the bird feeders.
- 12:15Speaker 4: Doesn't do any damage, and.
- 12:18Speaker 1: So I got that out and kind of scared the apossum.
- 12:22Speaker 1: But I mean, he didn't run very fast, and I
- 12:24Speaker 1: don't think he went very far. This is the second siding.
- 12:28Speaker 1: My wife saw it a couple of weeks ago, and
- 12:33Speaker 1: we do have bird feeders, and I'm assuming they're there.
- 12:37Speaker 1: I extolled the virtues to her of a possums and
- 12:41Speaker 1: the environment with insects and such. She wasn't I don't
- 12:47Speaker 1: think she was buying that. I think she would have
- 12:50Speaker 1: preferred the silent, deadly pellet gun, and I could have used.
- 13:01Speaker 4: I could have used that kind of.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Force, and and I'm not saying I won't if the
- 13:07Speaker 1: problem persists. There's nothing wrong with the possum. He's out
- 13:12Speaker 1: at night, he's obviously not rabid. I'm sure there's a
- 13:17Speaker 1: family of possums nearby. I don't want to encourage them.
- 13:25Speaker 1: All I'll say is I guess the possum just caught.
- 13:28Speaker 4: Me in a in a good mood last night, and.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Maybe the night would be different in case he's listening
- 13:41Speaker 1: or any member of his family is listing. I'm just saying,
- 13:47Speaker 1: back to the coyote, the Wildlife Service in New Jersey
- 13:50Speaker 1: receives about one hundred couty related calls per year. Although
- 13:55Speaker 1: and I love this extremely rare, couties have been known
- 13:59Speaker 1: to attack humans. Parents should monitor their children. That's always
- 14:04Speaker 1: good advice, I think for those of us who are
- 14:08Speaker 1: you know, parents are younger children or even older children
- 14:11Speaker 1: for that matter. If couties are present, make sure they
- 14:14Speaker 1: know they're not welcome, like you know, pellets to the head.
- 14:18Speaker 1: But you can't do that in New Jersey and New York.
- 14:24Speaker 4: I mean.
- 14:26Speaker 1: I probably wouldn't broadcast it here in my own backyard, but.
- 14:34Speaker 4: I could do it.
- 14:35Speaker 1: I'm just saying, Wildlife Services, uh said, this isn't a joke, So.
- 14:48Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't.
- 14:49Speaker 1: I don't think we saw that it was a joke
- 14:51Speaker 1: when a coutie was wounding this woman, which was.
- 14:54Speaker 4: Caught on video. But just to make sure it's it's
- 14:59Speaker 4: not a joke.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Our Animals Attack segment is brought you each week by
- 15:08Speaker 1: Shulty Ruffi Home of.
- 15:10Speaker 4: The Bulletproof Roof Guarantee.
- 15:12Speaker 8: It was after a hailstorm a few years back. I
- 15:14Speaker 8: needed a new roof. Yeah, I shopped around and then
- 15:17Speaker 8: I found Shorlty Roofing in Point.
- 15:19Speaker 9: I'm glad I did. The folks at Shulty guided me
- 15:21Speaker 9: every step of the way. They showed me my options.
- 15:24Speaker 8: They told me what my out of pocket cost would
- 15:26Speaker 8: be after insurance. They took the complication out of an
- 15:29Speaker 8: otherwise very stressful situation. They took off the damage roof,
- 15:32Speaker 8: put on the new roof, did all the clean up,
- 15:34Speaker 8: and I had my new roof in one day.
- 15:39Speaker 10: The Home by the bullet Proof Proof.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Hey, welcome back to the Clark Eisenhower Outdoor Edition for
- 15:47Speaker 1: a Thursday. Don't forget tomorrow my weekly visit with Kurt
- 15:52Speaker 1: Bowles of the Houston Chronicle and Tony Catalina of the
- 15:55Speaker 1: Austin American Statesman. That's tomorrow on the program. Monday we
- 16:03Speaker 1: will have the writers Roundtable, and Tuesday I'm going to
- 16:10Speaker 1: visit with Paul Myers. He is the brother of actor
- 16:14Speaker 1: comedian Mike Myers. He has written a biography of John Candy.
- 16:19Speaker 1: It is terrific. It's hard to believe John Candy has
- 16:23Speaker 1: been dead for as long.
- 16:24Speaker 4: As he had.
- 16:25Speaker 1: I believe he was forty three when he died. But
- 16:29Speaker 1: we will visit with Paul Myers on the show next
- 16:33Speaker 1: Tuesday and his biography of John Candy. All right, we're
- 16:38Speaker 1: going to go back, just not too long. My first
- 16:44Speaker 1: and so far only trip to Belice, and of course
- 16:50Speaker 1: we brought the high wind with us that day.
- 16:55Speaker 11: We are off ambergus Key and Belie on the Clark
- 16:59Speaker 11: Eisenhower Outdoor. Addition, I'm with guide Captain Nano Guerrero after
- 17:05Speaker 11: a day on the water has been extremely patient. He's
- 17:09Speaker 11: given me great tips all day long. But Nano, in
- 17:14Speaker 11: order for those tips to work, you have to have
- 17:16Speaker 11: somebody that listens to you.
- 17:18Speaker 12: Yeah, that's right, and they have to take their time
- 17:22Speaker 12: and make.
- 17:22Speaker 7: A knife soft cast.
- 17:25Speaker 11: You know. I'm I'm fair when we're practicing. But when
- 17:29Speaker 11: those bone fish start, when you start going ten o'clock
- 17:33Speaker 11: and they're moving that way, that's when everything speeds up,
- 17:37Speaker 11: and that's when everything's slow down. Yeah right, Yeah, that's right,
- 17:41Speaker 11: So if I gave you, if I told you had
- 17:44Speaker 11: a day to fish, what species would you fish for?
- 17:49Speaker 7: Usually I will go for the boones.
- 17:51Speaker 12: Yeah, for permit you have to be get your line
- 17:53Speaker 12: out a little quick to get there because they are
- 17:56Speaker 12: more you know, justo more easy than the boones.
- 18:00Speaker 11: Difficult is it to catch a permit on a fly?
- 18:03Speaker 12: Not at hard, as long as you take your time.
- 18:05Speaker 12: You have to watch them. Just take your time and
- 18:08Speaker 12: work with them, you know. But you can get them.
- 18:11Speaker 12: It's just a matter of taking your time.
- 18:14Speaker 11: How old were you when you picked up a fly rod? Oh?
- 18:17Speaker 7: Boy, I was on my late twenties, I guess. Yeah, okay, had.
- 18:22Speaker 11: You already done some diving or diving before then?
- 18:26Speaker 7: Diving? Scuba diving? I used to scuba dive for a while.
- 18:29Speaker 11: How much of your business is taking people diving and
- 18:33Speaker 11: how much of it is fishing?
- 18:35Speaker 12: I'm doing mostly fishing right now. I'm doing pretty good
- 18:39Speaker 12: with the fishing.
- 18:40Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 18:41Speaker 12: The diving, we had a little bit more competition, yeah,
- 18:44Speaker 12: but bigger companies. Yeah, bigger companies, bigger boats. So that's
- 18:49Speaker 12: why I changed the fly fishing.
- 18:51Speaker 11: You told me that you fish quite a few Texans
- 18:54Speaker 11: down here.
- 18:55Speaker 7: Oh, yeah.
- 18:55Speaker 12: We get a lot of people from Texas Florida too.
- 19:00Speaker 12: Now we're getting from different parts of the country from
- 19:03Speaker 12: the US due to the airlines opening new new areas,
- 19:07Speaker 12: you know. But yeah, but mostly I'm in Texans.
- 19:12Speaker 11: Well, we don't have bone fish in Texas, so that's
- 19:14Speaker 11: what We've got to go somewhere to catch bonefish, right.
- 19:17Speaker 7: That's right, we have them here.
- 19:19Speaker 12: It's uh, apparently the ones and believes are a little
- 19:22Speaker 12: smaller than done you know, like U Bahamas. But we
- 19:26Speaker 12: have like big schools that you can find on the
- 19:28Speaker 12: shallow area.
- 19:29Speaker 11: And today was a difficult day because the wind is blowing.
- 19:33Speaker 11: The first thing Nano said to me when he pulled
- 19:36Speaker 11: up to the dock is did you bring the wind?
- 19:39Speaker 11: And what did I tell you? Not? Yeah, that's right,
- 19:42Speaker 11: I said, yes, idea, Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's it's it's
- 19:47Speaker 11: hard enough when conditions are perfect. We don't date a
- 19:50Speaker 11: twenty mile an hour wind massive.
- 19:52Speaker 7: Weapons, that's right.
- 19:53Speaker 12: When it's the normal win here would be like five
- 19:56Speaker 12: to fifteen, which is perfect.
- 19:58Speaker 7: That would be good.
- 19:58Speaker 11: Yeah, you don't you don't want to completely still.
- 20:01Speaker 12: No, no, no, the fish is not really that active cloth.
- 20:04Speaker 12: They can see you any little noise, you know, when
- 20:06Speaker 12: it's a dead cam.
- 20:07Speaker 7: Not too good.
- 20:08Speaker 11: This may be the quietest guy about I've ever been with.
- 20:11Speaker 11: I gotta tell you we're fish. I'm fishing from the
- 20:15Speaker 11: bout about. I've got my fly rod. And then I
- 20:18Speaker 11: look up and now I was standing right beside me.
- 20:20Speaker 11: I didn't hear a thing you did.
- 20:22Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, just trying to help you.
- 20:25Speaker 12: Still, city fish guide you a little bit, you know,
- 20:27Speaker 12: so you can put your calf right where you needed.
- 20:30Speaker 11: How how much does it take to spot these fish?
- 20:36Speaker 7: How what?
- 20:37Speaker 11: How long did it take you to just key it on? Thanks?
- 20:41Speaker 12: Well, you know, since I've been doing this for a
- 20:43Speaker 12: little while. So I can see him from far and
- 20:46Speaker 12: sometimes it depends on the water. But sometimes I can
- 20:48Speaker 12: see the fish. I can see water movement, I can
- 20:51Speaker 12: see flashes sometimes tailing fish. So it all depends, you know.
- 20:55Speaker 12: But a nice sunny day you can see all those things.
- 20:58Speaker 11: We had. We had most of the day, which was good.
- 21:01Speaker 11: It was a little partly cloudy earlier this morning. Tell
- 21:06Speaker 11: me a little bit about you mentioned tailing bone fish.
- 21:10Speaker 11: We didn't see any.
- 21:11Speaker 7: Of those today.
- 21:12Speaker 12: No, Usually you find those in the very shallow area,
- 21:16Speaker 12: and you know when the tiger goes a little a
- 21:19Speaker 12: little low. Then they come on the edges and that's
- 21:21Speaker 12: where you could find them tailing, you know, but today
- 21:24Speaker 12: was a pretty windy day, so a little harder to
- 21:27Speaker 12: find him.
- 21:28Speaker 11: Hey, we caught some fish for sure, which is you know,
- 21:32Speaker 11: a miracle, but we did. How many days a year
- 21:37Speaker 11: do you think you fish?
- 21:38Speaker 12: Oh's a good question, but well we're pretty busy from
- 21:45Speaker 12: late December till around July. You know, that's our busy season.
- 21:49Speaker 11: It's hot, hot, stale in July, August, maybe.
- 21:53Speaker 12: July, yeah, it's warm. But February March you can have
- 21:56Speaker 12: got you know, those cold fronts a little cool sometimes
- 21:59Speaker 12: I and clear, sometimes windy.
- 22:03Speaker 11: What what's your favorite month for boat fish?
- 22:07Speaker 7: Well?
- 22:07Speaker 12: I think sometimes November because the winter, when you have
- 22:10Speaker 12: a light nerd nerd wind, the water gets clear, you
- 22:14Speaker 12: can see fish. Sometimes they're very active, so you have
- 22:17Speaker 12: good chances.
- 22:18Speaker 11: I know, people come from all over. You mentioned the
- 22:21Speaker 11: winter time. People are trying to get out of the
- 22:24Speaker 11: cold weather when they cut down here.
- 22:25Speaker 7: Right, that's right, that's right.
- 22:27Speaker 11: How much have you seen this place grow? I mean,
- 22:30Speaker 11: you're a native, you've been here all your life.
- 22:32Speaker 7: Oh, a lot, a lot of change.
- 22:35Speaker 12: When I was growing up, probably maybe like five vehicles,
- 22:38Speaker 12: four or five vehicles. Now the island has expanded. Oh,
- 22:42Speaker 12: I think we're growing too fast.
- 22:43Speaker 11: Where are all these people coming from.
- 22:45Speaker 7: From all over? All over?
- 22:48Speaker 12: We got from Central America that come for libor. Then
- 22:51Speaker 12: we have expot that come and live here. You know
- 22:54Speaker 12: a lot of Americans.
- 22:56Speaker 11: You have a lot of I noticed there's a lot
- 22:58Speaker 11: of building going on too.
- 22:59Speaker 12: Oh yeah, they're building a lot of condos. Not much
- 23:02Speaker 12: hotels now, it's all condos now. Yeah, mostly con news.
- 23:06Speaker 11: I will tell people that we're in ambergus Key. We
- 23:10Speaker 11: we we flew into the main airport in Belize City.
- 23:14Speaker 11: You could take a little puddle jumper and airplane fifteen
- 23:17Speaker 11: minute flight. We took the ferry for the adventure and
- 23:21Speaker 11: that was fun too. So there's several ways you can
- 23:24Speaker 11: get here.
- 23:25Speaker 7: Yeah, mostly water talk for you by plan yeah. Yeah.
- 23:27Speaker 12: Well you can charter a boat, you know, if it's
- 23:30Speaker 12: a bigger groups charter a big boot then yes, yeah, yeah.
- 23:33Speaker 11: Well the other thing I've noticed there's a lot of
- 23:35Speaker 11: things for tourists. In other words, you have you know, sailboats,
- 23:39Speaker 11: you have opportunities to snorkel. There's snorkeling trips. There's people,
- 23:46Speaker 11: there's there's just people. And I know that there's combination.
- 23:50Speaker 11: You can do a snorkel trip and a fishing trip.
- 23:53Speaker 12: Yeah, you can do snortling with a little bit of fishing.
- 23:57Speaker 12: Then you do a little bit of cookout on the
- 23:58Speaker 12: beach fresh yeah, catch, you know, and you know deepsey fishing,
- 24:04Speaker 12: it's pretty close.
- 24:05Speaker 7: You don't have to go that far, you know. For
- 24:07Speaker 7: the deep se fishing.
- 24:08Speaker 11: The reef is like over one hundred miles long that
- 24:10Speaker 11: runs off of this key.
- 24:12Speaker 7: One hundred we have like one hundred and seventy five miles.
- 24:14Speaker 11: Wow, and that's one of the largest reefs in the world.
- 24:17Speaker 12: And yeah, the second largest in the world from the
- 24:19Speaker 12: Great Barrier, that's right.
- 24:20Speaker 11: Yeah, so you understand that that gives you the opportunity
- 24:25Speaker 11: for all kinds of water things and fish and all
- 24:28Speaker 11: of that. My wife asked me, how did I find no, no,
- 24:31Speaker 11: And I said, well, I always look for guys. I'm
- 24:34Speaker 11: not saying the guys that do the combination trip don't
- 24:37Speaker 11: know what they're doing, but I always look for guys
- 24:39Speaker 11: that you're a fisherman. It's like you have lots of
- 24:42Speaker 11: years of experience. I said, that's the guy I want
- 24:45Speaker 11: to go with.
- 24:45Speaker 7: Yeah, that's right.
- 24:47Speaker 12: If you're going to do like fly fishing, try to
- 24:49Speaker 12: get the guy that I've been doing that for a while, and.
- 24:51Speaker 11: Not only that, this guy will He didn't. He didn't
- 24:55Speaker 11: help me because I'm beyond help. But he tried all
- 24:59Speaker 11: day to help my casting. And I had, out of
- 25:03Speaker 11: like a thousand casts, I had a couple of good ones,
- 25:05Speaker 11: didn't I.
- 25:06Speaker 7: That's right, good ones, really good ones.
- 25:09Speaker 11: The last shot we had on the biggest bonefish we
- 25:12Speaker 11: saw today was my best cast. Unfortunately, the bonefish you're already.
- 25:16Speaker 7: Moved by to turn you up with a direction, So.
- 25:19Speaker 11: I'm used to that. I mean, where that's Look, these
- 25:22Speaker 11: things aren't easy, are they.
- 25:24Speaker 7: Yeah, it's a little challenge. If it's too easy, it's
- 25:27Speaker 7: not gonna be fun.
- 25:28Speaker 11: You're right, I mean, it is a challenge to catch
- 25:32Speaker 11: these little devils, and even you who can spot them
- 25:35Speaker 11: from one hundred yards away, and I don't know how
- 25:37Speaker 11: you do it. They even disappear sometime from you from you.
- 25:40Speaker 7: Don't you go to dolf, where's the dude? So you
- 25:43Speaker 7: have to really keep an eye on them. If not,
- 25:45Speaker 7: you lose truck.
- 25:46Speaker 11: Of them and you're looking. You've already mentioned sometimes you
- 25:49Speaker 11: could be a little flash, you know, if they turn
- 25:52Speaker 11: from the sun the water shallow, you can get a
- 25:55Speaker 11: little displaced water so you can see them that one.
- 25:58Speaker 12: Yeah, sometimes you can feel like a little shit or
- 26:00Speaker 12: if they don't flash, you know, but sometimes you consider
- 26:03Speaker 12: whole fish.
- 26:04Speaker 7: Once you concentrate on what you're looking, you can you
- 26:07Speaker 7: can do it.
- 26:07Speaker 11: And I ask you about sharks. We had not seen
- 26:10Speaker 11: it until this afternoon. We saw little one that was
- 26:12Speaker 11: messing around. We needed him to leave, and we just
- 26:15Speaker 11: saw a little bit larger and it's not unusual.
- 26:17Speaker 12: Oh no, on the flats there, No, they come to
- 26:20Speaker 12: have bigger shark, come to have your young ones in here.
- 26:23Speaker 12: So yes, you said a small one. That's a baby
- 26:26Speaker 12: maybe like two weeks of old.
- 26:27Speaker 11: Wow, So this time of years when they're hard, the
- 26:29Speaker 11: time they're around small one.
- 26:31Speaker 7: Once they get to a certain side and start moving
- 26:33Speaker 7: to part of the ocean, to the ocean, they're protected
- 26:36Speaker 7: over here.
- 26:37Speaker 11: Look what I would recommend fish you're through fish or
- 26:42Speaker 11: we can't be caught called through fish booker correct, Oh yeah.
- 26:45Speaker 7: I do it through a fishing booker or if.
- 26:48Speaker 11: That's an app it's a website or you could. You
- 26:51Speaker 11: could just guarantee if you'll google Nano Guerrero, ambergus Key
- 26:57Speaker 11: or Saint Pedro, his name will come up. They can
- 27:00Speaker 11: call you directly.
- 27:01Speaker 7: They can't get me directly.
- 27:03Speaker 11: Yeah, this guy knows what he's doing. I'm just telling you.
- 27:07Speaker 11: He can't help somebody like me, but I promise he
- 27:09Speaker 11: can help you.
- 27:11Speaker 7: Try my best.
- 27:12Speaker 11: Yeah, he tried all day long. It's very patient. He
- 27:17Speaker 11: wanted to throw me overboard, and that we did, but
- 27:20Speaker 11: he was very patient. We caught some fish today and
- 27:23Speaker 11: thank you so much.
- 27:24Speaker 7: We're done. Welcome pleasure serving you.
- 27:27Speaker 11: It's a great boat. We're really shallow water. We are

- 32:00Speaker 1: It is the Clark Eisenhower Outdoor addition for a Thursday afternoon.
- 32:05Speaker 4: We're going to jump back. It's been about a year
- 32:08Speaker 4: and a half.
- 32:09Speaker 1: Chester Moore does a podcast, Long Time Outdoorsman in the
- 32:15Speaker 1: southeast part of the state, and he took on trout
- 32:18Speaker 1: regulations as they were being discussed, and this has been
- 32:21Speaker 1: about a year and a half ago. I thought we
- 32:24Speaker 1: would revisit that some of the arguments. Then, I for one,
- 32:29Speaker 1: am thrilled at what has happened along the Texas coast.
- 32:34Speaker 1: I mean from Galveston to South Padre. The quality of
- 32:38Speaker 1: trout that are showing up along the coast. Of course,
- 32:44Speaker 1: part of that's been helped that we haven't had any
- 32:46Speaker 1: extremely cold weather. But I really like what is going
- 32:53Speaker 1: on with speckled trout fishing.
- 32:56Speaker 4: Some of you may not agree with that.
- 32:58Speaker 1: That's okay, but here's a part of the discussion.
- 33:03Speaker 9: And welcome to Higher Calling Wildlife. This is Chestermore.
- 33:06Speaker 18: There are huge changes of foot for the spotted sea
- 33:09Speaker 18: trout fishery in the Gulf of Mexico in terms of
- 33:13Speaker 18: angler access to the fishery and what they can retain.
- 33:18Speaker 18: It started in Louisiana. Of all places, Louisiana rarely changes
- 33:23Speaker 18: fishing regulations, and now in Louisiana the size limit is
- 33:28Speaker 18: thirteen to twenty inches total length, only two fish included
- 33:33Speaker 18: with a daily bag limit. They call a crew limit
- 33:36Speaker 18: of twenty inches total length. Now daily bag limit is
- 33:41Speaker 18: fifteen per angler, and that is coast wide. Before it
- 33:45Speaker 18: was just from the Mermantaw River to the Sabine River.
- 33:47Speaker 18: That's basically Lake Kaalcashu. Sabine Lake was like that. The
- 33:51Speaker 18: rest of the state was twenty five inches. Charter Boat
- 33:54Speaker 18: guides and crew will no longer be able to retain
- 33:58Speaker 18: a crew limit while on a charter trip may engage
- 34:01Speaker 18: in fishing.
- 34:02Speaker 9: In other words, they.
- 34:02Speaker 18: Can help you catch your limit, but they can't add
- 34:04Speaker 18: a limit to what you're going to bring back. Now,
- 34:08Speaker 18: Texas Parks and Wildlife just in January twenty twenty four
- 34:13Speaker 18: change the five fish bag limit in Texas to three
- 34:16Speaker 18: fish per angler. There's a minimum length of fifteen inches,
- 34:20Speaker 18: a maximum now of twenty inches, and one oversized trout
- 34:25Speaker 18: greater than thirty inches allowed as part of a daily
- 34:29Speaker 18: bag limit.
- 34:30Speaker 9: Now.
- 34:30Speaker 18: In addition, Texas Parks and Wildlife Commissioners have granted permission
- 34:34Speaker 18: to publish a proposal to create a tag system that
- 34:38Speaker 18: allows for the take of oversized trout which is greater
- 34:41Speaker 18: than thirty inches, including one bonus tag per year for
- 34:46Speaker 18: a fee. And interestingly, most regulation proposals that happen like
- 34:50Speaker 18: in these spring regulation change meetings start September first. This
- 34:57Speaker 18: is going to start before then because Parks and whaw
- 35:00Speaker 18: Life has said, you know, be aware there's going to
- 35:02Speaker 18: be a regulation change happening.
- 35:04Speaker 9: Soon, so we will let you know what we hear.
- 35:08Speaker 18: But I wanted to establish it there's some very interesting
- 35:11Speaker 18: stuff happening in the Gulf of Mexico as it relates
- 35:15Speaker 18: to the spotted sea trout. I think it's supporting to
- 35:18Speaker 18: go back and look at trends and trophy trout because
- 35:22Speaker 18: there seems to have been a downhill slide in the
- 35:24Speaker 18: production of extra big fish, and that can be measured
- 35:28Speaker 18: somewhat with looking at record fish along the Gulf coast.
- 35:32Speaker 18: We're going to take a deep dive on the records
- 35:34Speaker 18: of Texas because in two thousand and two, Carl Budd
- 35:38Speaker 18: Rowland caught the official state record on May the twenty third,
- 35:41Speaker 18: two thousand and two in the lower Laguna Madre. It
- 35:44Speaker 18: weighed sixteen pounds and measured a monstrous thirty seven inches.
- 35:49Speaker 18: That replaced the famous Jim Wallace fish called A nineteen
- 35:52Speaker 18: ninety six in bath and Bay there was thirteen pounds
- 35:55Speaker 18: eleven ounces.
- 35:57Speaker 9: And of course the all tackle world.
- 35:58Speaker 18: Record for speckled trout was called A nineteen ninety five
- 36:01Speaker 18: near Fort Pierce, Florida, and it weighed seventeen pounds and
- 36:06Speaker 18: seven ounces.
- 36:07Speaker 9: It's really really incredible fish.
- 36:09Speaker 18: So I don't think any fisherman hits the water their
- 36:13Speaker 18: whole life without thinking, what if I caught the world
- 36:15Speaker 18: record this or the world record that well, or maybe
- 36:19Speaker 18: even a state record or.
- 36:20Speaker 9: A water body record.
- 36:21Speaker 18: And it's fascinating to think that maybe that cast out there,
- 36:24Speaker 18: that top water throughout there, when I twitch it, that
- 36:27Speaker 18: the new world record, of the new Louisiana state record,
- 36:30Speaker 18: or the new Texas record speckled trout will slurping under it.
- 36:34Speaker 18: I'll be the record holder. It's a fun thing to
- 36:36Speaker 18: think about. It's also a lot of fun to look
- 36:39Speaker 18: when we start going into the trends of what makes
- 36:42Speaker 18: a big trout possible. We talked about that in the
- 36:44Speaker 18: first two episodes. But I want to start with Texas
- 36:47Speaker 18: because Texas has the most complete information and detailed information
- 36:53Speaker 18: on records for fish if any of the states along
- 36:56Speaker 18: the Gulf Coast, and it's really interesting to see this.
- 36:59Speaker 18: So we're gonna go into some trends, beginning with Texas. Now,
- 37:03Speaker 18: the famous Jim Wallace fish of nineteen ninety six. Here
- 37:07Speaker 18: it be the thirteen point nine pound record caught by
- 37:11Speaker 18: Mike Blackwood set in nineteen seventy five. So you had
- 37:14Speaker 18: nineteen seventy five, and then you had twenty one years
- 37:17Speaker 18: later you had Jim Wallace catch that big fish he
- 37:20Speaker 18: caught in baff And Bay. It took twenty one whole years,
- 37:23Speaker 18: nineteen years that Rowland caught his fish in the Lower
- 37:26Speaker 18: Laguna Madre. At the time of this recording in January
- 37:29Speaker 18: of twenty twenty one, no one had beaten Roland's record.
- 37:32Speaker 18: So the Florida record has stood so far for twenty
- 37:36Speaker 18: six years. So I'm going to break down some of
- 37:39Speaker 18: the trends and the records set in different base systems
- 37:42Speaker 18: along the Texas coast, going from the northern tier at
- 37:45Speaker 18: Sabine Lake down into the Lower Laguna Madre area, which
- 37:49Speaker 18: is the bud rolling fish.
- 37:51Speaker 9: So we're gonna go.
- 37:51Speaker 18: To Sabine Lake. Kelly Rising caught the lake record. I
- 37:55Speaker 18: reported on that in nineteen ninety nine. I broke the
- 37:58Speaker 18: story on that twelve pounds called March twenty eighth, nineteen
- 38:02Speaker 18: nine nine in Sabine Lake. Galveston Bays record RJ. Spencer
- 38:07Speaker 18: twelve pounds March nineteenth, two thousand and seven, Corpus Christie Bay,
- 38:14Speaker 18: Philip Spencer twelve pounds March eighteenth, twenty fourteen, Matta Gorda,
- 38:20Speaker 18: mark Ido eleven pounds January twentieth, nineteen ninety nine, and
- 38:25Speaker 18: the Gulf of Mexico records. So this fish was caught
- 38:28Speaker 18: in the surf. Is no information we can find one.
- 38:30Speaker 18: I've researched. It can't find any more information either caught
- 38:33Speaker 18: like on a pier that will be considered Golf of
- 38:35Speaker 18: Mexico surf or a rig or something like that. It's
- 38:39Speaker 18: thirteen pounds and that was caught May the twenty fifth
- 38:42Speaker 18: of nineteen sixty nine. Looking at these sizes and dates,
- 38:46Speaker 18: it's easy to see.
- 38:47Speaker 9: There is no real pattern.
- 38:49Speaker 18: Un Light largemouth bass, for example, where a huge amount
- 38:52Speaker 18: of Texas largest bass came from nineteen eighty six to
- 38:55Speaker 18: nineteen ninety three at Lake four. Big trouts seem to
- 38:58Speaker 18: show up at various times. Now, there's no question nineteen
- 39:01Speaker 18: ninety six was an incredible year for the baff And
- 39:03Speaker 18: Bay complex because several fish and the eleven to twelve
- 39:07Speaker 18: pound class were caught within a short span of Wallace's catch,
- 39:10Speaker 18: But all of those records have now stood for years.
- 39:14Speaker 18: One could look at major coastal freeze kills as being
- 39:16Speaker 18: a limiting factor in big trout production. That's a valid point,
- 39:20Speaker 18: but Wallace's fish came seven years after the major freeze
- 39:24Speaker 18: kill of nineteen eighty nine. That fish was definitely born
- 39:28Speaker 18: before the freeze. Is no doubt that his fish was
- 39:31Speaker 18: more than seven years old. A trout will live nine
- 39:33Speaker 18: ten years, and this fish was definitely toward the end
- 39:35Speaker 18: of its life cycle. Again, there's not a real pattern here,
- 39:39Speaker 18: And unlike largemouth bass and management, where there's really intensive
- 39:44Speaker 18: management in terms of trophy sized fish and world record
- 39:47Speaker 18: fish and literally breeding fish that are thirteen pounds and
- 39:50Speaker 18: bigger and putting them back in reservoirs, there's none of that.
- 39:53Speaker 18: We talked about episode two of the show with Shane
- 39:55Speaker 18: Buno in Texas. There's none of that where you're like
- 39:57Speaker 18: tweaking the genes. They're just catching trout. For me, based
- 40:00Speaker 18: system is stalking those fish back into the base system,
- 40:03Speaker 18: kind of letting nature take its course. Now there's regulations
- 40:06Speaker 18: now we've got down to a five fish limit, no
- 40:09Speaker 18: more than one fish a day over twenty five inches,
- 40:10Speaker 18: those kind of things, But there's nothing in terms of
- 40:12Speaker 18: like tweaking genetics to produce these really big fish. And
- 40:18Speaker 18: the question is can Texas ever produce a world record
- 40:21Speaker 18: trout or will ever be?
- 40:23Speaker 9: It's state records. So I don't know on that.
- 40:26Speaker 18: I think there's probably one swimming around there somewhere. Will
- 40:29Speaker 18: someone ever catch it?
- 40:31Speaker 9: We don't know.
- 40:31Speaker 18: But we're gonna move and look at some other states
- 40:34Speaker 18: just to give you some idea of what's happened timeline
- 40:37Speaker 18: wise there, and also just to kind of fish are
- 40:40Speaker 18: catching in different states. Along the Gulf of Mexico. Louisiana
- 40:43Speaker 18: has a fairly decent log system of fish. The Louisiana
- 40:46Speaker 18: Outdoor Writers' Association actually log the fish and they don't
- 40:50Speaker 18: have a base systems that I can find of, but
- 40:52Speaker 18: they do have a top ten of the species out
- 40:55Speaker 18: there and this is really really interesting. So the number
- 40:58Speaker 18: one fish ever caught in Louisiana on speckled trout Leon Mattz,
- 41:02Speaker 18: twelve point three eight pound fish in Lake Hermitage in
- 41:06Speaker 18: April of nineteen fifty. The next fish is Kenneth Kreeger
- 41:11Speaker 18: Lake Pontchatrain, January nineteen ninety nine, eleven point nine nine pounds.
- 41:17Speaker 9: Okay.
- 41:17Speaker 18: The third place is Jason Truier, and that's called in
- 41:20Speaker 18: Lake Bourne, September nineteen ninety nine, eleven point two four.
- 41:24Speaker 18: Then know the Lake Calcashu where I love the fish
- 41:26Speaker 18: Timothy Mahoney, May two thousand and two, eleven point one six,
- 41:31Speaker 18: Kevin Galley, Capcashue, May nineteen ninety seven, ten point eight one.
- 41:36Speaker 18: And you see this goes all the way down to
- 41:39Speaker 18: the tenth place, which is ed Sexton in Venice, April
- 41:42Speaker 18: of two thy ten point five zero. There's a Sabine
- 41:45Speaker 18: Lake fish in there. There's a Breton soundfish in there.
- 41:49Speaker 18: From May nineteen seventy nine.
- 41:50Speaker 9: A lot of areas.
- 41:51Speaker 18: Calcashue has the most, followed by Ponta Train in the
- 41:54Speaker 18: top ten list, but the top records nineteen fifty we
- 41:59Speaker 18: have them as recently as twenty and thirteen on this list.
- 42:03Speaker 18: So it seems it's kind of all over the place
- 42:06Speaker 18: for big trout in Louisiana. All right, Mississippi has very
- 42:11Speaker 18: little records that I can find, But Chris Denton caught
- 42:14Speaker 18: the biggest trout there. He caught an April of twenty
- 42:17Speaker 18: and thirteen and weigh ten pounds. The fish that holds
- 42:22Speaker 18: the current record. The Alabama record is twelve pounds four ounces,
- 42:27Speaker 18: and that fish was caught in nineteen eighty in Orange Beach, Alabama.
- 42:32Speaker 9: And of course we know about.
- 42:34Speaker 18: The Florida record, the world record fish at over seventeen pounds.
- 42:40Speaker 18: I mean, that's a mind blowing size fish, seventeen pounds
- 42:43Speaker 18: seven ounces. And so these records are kind of all
- 42:47Speaker 18: over the place, and you have to look at certain
- 42:50Speaker 18: factors of this. The biggest fish caught are in Texas,
- 42:54Speaker 18: in South Texas, Super South Texas, and in Florida. So
- 42:58Speaker 18: there's something that has to do with that. More semi
- 43:01Speaker 18: tropical environment, warmer waters year round, those kind of things
- 43:06Speaker 18: seem to make a difference on the absolutely huge oversized
- 43:10Speaker 18: speckled trout. You know, a largemouth bass are looked at
- 43:13Speaker 18: at thirteen pounds as being the standard bearer for like
- 43:16Speaker 18: super monster fish or any angler will be happy to
- 43:20Speaker 18: catch a ten pound bass. I haven't caught ten pound you.
- 43:22Speaker 18: I've caught a nine and a half, and I've caught
- 43:23Speaker 18: thousands of bass. Haven't broke the ten pound mark yet.
- 43:27Speaker 18: But in the bass world thirteen pounds. Texas Parks and
- 43:31Speaker 18: Wilife has their share longer program that's kind of like
- 43:33Speaker 18: the super sized fish. And looking at these lists, it
- 43:36Speaker 18: looks to me like, if you get to like twelve pounds,
- 43:41Speaker 18: you've entered a realm that few humans ever do with
- 43:44Speaker 18: speckled trout. And it's a really interesting list to look
- 43:47Speaker 18: at because it encompasses all the different kinds of environments
- 43:52Speaker 18: that you're gonna find a speckled trout in. I find
- 43:55Speaker 18: it fascinating because it encompasses all kinds of areas you
- 43:58Speaker 18: would find a spec trout in. Now, let's look at
- 44:02Speaker 18: the Texas list. For example, the record is in Lower Laguna, Madria.
- 44:06Speaker 18: We talked about that having the more saline environment, semi
- 44:10Speaker 18: tropical type environment, sort of matching what's in the part
- 44:14Speaker 18: of Florida where the world record tried at seventeen pounds
- 44:17Speaker 18: seven ounces is.
- 44:18Speaker 9: But you have fish that.
- 44:19Speaker 18: Are in the twelve pound category in the northern part
- 44:22Speaker 18: of Texas twelve pounds both in Galveson Bay and Sabing Lake.
- 44:26Speaker 18: And you have the Gulf in Mexico record. We don't
- 44:28Speaker 18: know where that is thirteen pounds. You have fish in
- 44:31Speaker 18: the surf, you have fish in what more intermediate brackish
- 44:35Speaker 18: type bays. You have fish in the Gulf of Mexico.
- 44:39Speaker 18: And then you go over to Louisiana. I think it's
- 44:41Speaker 18: really interesting in their top ten list Lake Hermitage in
- 44:44Speaker 18: nineteen fifty, there has it been a fish brought into
- 44:48Speaker 18: Louisiana since nineteen fifty. It's big than twelve point three
- 44:51Speaker 18: eight pounds, right.
- 44:53Speaker 9: So that's Lake Hermitage.
- 44:55Speaker 18: And then you look, although you have Breton Sound, I
- 44:57Speaker 18: fish in Breton Sound. That's actually an area out there
- 45:00Speaker 18: there around the Chandelier Island essentially right out in the Gulf.
- 45:03Speaker 9: Of Mexico area.
- 45:05Speaker 18: You have Calcashue Lake, you have done in Venice in
- 45:09Speaker 18: the Marches and Lake Pontchatrain, all these different kind of locations,
- 45:12Speaker 18: so it's not necessarily centered in one particular area. All
- 45:16Speaker 18: these fish that are over that ten pound mark. But
- 45:18Speaker 18: if you start looking at the ones that are, you know,
- 45:21Speaker 18: let's just say above eleven pounds. You get more of
- 45:25Speaker 18: a pattern here where these fish are going to be found. Okay,
- 45:28Speaker 18: if you look at the Texas list of fish, you'll
- 45:30Speaker 18: see fish all over the place. Of course, the bud
- 45:33Speaker 18: rolling fish caught in lower Laguna Madre. That habitat matches
- 45:37Speaker 18: very closely to the semi tropical area of Florida, very
- 45:43Speaker 18: very similar type of area. Then you have, you know,
- 45:46Speaker 18: a thirteen pound fish caught in the Golf of Mexico.
- 45:49Speaker 18: Different areas producing these fish. Louisiana Top ten list, the
- 45:52Speaker 18: number one fish twelve point three eight pounds caught in
- 45:55Speaker 18: nineteen fifteen Lake Hermitage. Number two caught a ninety nine
- 45:58Speaker 18: in Poncha Train. But then you got fish caught in
- 46:01Speaker 18: Breton Sound, which is out in the Chandelier Islands essentially
- 46:04Speaker 18: almost out in the Gulf of Mexico there. And you
- 46:06Speaker 18: have fish caught in Venice in just different areas. So
- 46:09Speaker 18: it's kind of all over the map with these let's
- 46:11Speaker 18: just say ten pound plus fish would be caught. Where
- 46:15Speaker 18: is the next record going to come from? Will there
- 46:18Speaker 18: be another record? You've got to ask some questions in
- 46:21Speaker 18: terms of management of fish. Do I think Louisiana will
- 46:24Speaker 18: produce another record fish. Look, it's nineteen fifty since there's
- 46:29Speaker 18: been a twelve pound trout caught and brought in in
- 46:32Speaker 18: Louisiana that's registered as a record. I think Louisiana is
- 46:37Speaker 18: missing the boat on management on that. If they want
- 46:40Speaker 18: to produce more trophy trout, you can't keep taking the
- 46:43Speaker 18: number of fish that Louisiana takes and produce a bunch
- 46:47Speaker 18: of record fish. It's got to change if record fish
- 46:50Speaker 18: is going to be part of their management. Texas has
- 46:52Speaker 18: kind of already gone that direction. Superseding a sixteen pound
- 46:57Speaker 18: record fish is a tall order, but the management principles
- 47:01Speaker 18: are sort of in place. With five fish no more
- 47:04Speaker 18: than one a day over twenty five, Florida has.
- 47:07Speaker 9: Really restrictive records.
- 47:09Speaker 18: But it's going to be a matter what's going to
- 47:10Speaker 18: be the factors out there that are going to cause
- 47:14Speaker 18: these fish to survive, because they have to be able
- 47:17Speaker 18: to survive to the oldest age possible, and the fish
- 47:21Speaker 18: that survives the oldest age has to have the genetics
- 47:23Speaker 18: to be the really really big fish. It has to
- 47:25Speaker 18: be in the right environment, the right forage. All of
- 47:28Speaker 18: those things you look at different conditions. Florida has had
- 47:30Speaker 18: a real problem with algae blooms. Texas had a little
- 47:33Speaker 18: bit of that as well. Texases do a big freeze kill.
- 47:36Speaker 18: It's about the time. I hate to say this, but
- 47:39Speaker 18: it's about the time if you look at timelines when
- 47:41Speaker 18: you typically would have a big freeze problem which killed
- 47:44Speaker 18: a lot of fish before. But we mentioned that the
- 47:48Speaker 18: Jim Wallace fish lived through a freeze. So is there
- 47:52Speaker 18: a pattern and do you think there is a pattern
- 47:55Speaker 18: that produces these big fish? Do you think there can
- 47:58Speaker 18: be a record in your state? Do you think there
- 48:00Speaker 18: will ever be a new Texas record? Do you think
- 48:02Speaker 18: there will ever be a new Florida record, which would
- 48:04Speaker 18: be a world record. Do you think Alabama or Mississippi
- 48:07Speaker 18: or Louisiana will have a record and where do you
- 48:11Speaker 18: think it will be caught? If you do have any
- 48:14Speaker 18: day on this, please message me Emi me at chester
- 48:17Speaker 18: at chestermore dot com. I'd love to know your information.
- 48:19Speaker 18: We'll talk about that in the future episode. Trophy speckel
- 48:22Speaker 18: trout are a very very rare commodity. You can manage
- 48:26Speaker 18: speckel trout to have a quality fishery that produces trophy fish.
- 48:31Speaker 18: But unlike largemouth bass, which can definitely be tweaked in
- 48:37Speaker 18: the hatcheries and all kinds of things like this, we
- 48:39Speaker 18: haven't gotten.
- 48:40Speaker 9: There with speckel trout yet.
- 48:41Speaker 18: I wrote an article very early in my career in
- 48:44Speaker 18: two thousand talking about the age of the super trout.
- 48:48Speaker 18: There had been some hatchery breakthroughs on tweaking genetics and things,
- 48:53Speaker 18: but it's never made it into your state fish and
- 48:56Speaker 18: Game departments. Texas Parks and Wildlife has not initiated of this.
- 48:59Speaker 18: I don't think Flora that has either, and Louisiana doesn't
- 49:02Speaker 18: have a stocking program. So you go into all these things,
- 49:05Speaker 18: you go, we don't have what's going on with bass
- 49:08Speaker 18: happening with speckled trout. I mean the real influence on
- 49:13Speaker 18: the growth of bass nationwow, where a lot of these
- 49:15Speaker 18: trophy fish are being produced as tweaking genes, and that
- 49:18Speaker 18: includes the introduction of Florida strain largemouth bass into lakes
- 49:23Speaker 18: around the country.
- 49:25Speaker 9: So that made a big difference there.
- 49:27Speaker 18: You're seeing these incredible fish and records broken all kinds
- 49:30Speaker 18: of lakes, record broken in states, and all kinds of things,
- 49:33Speaker 18: huge bass in different areas, and it's just not happening
- 49:37Speaker 18: the same way with speckel trout. I think that has
- 49:40Speaker 18: a factor in it. I think that in my personal opinion,
- 49:43Speaker 18: looking at this for many years and kind of being
- 49:45Speaker 18: really fascinated by it, I think that there's just got
- 49:47Speaker 18: to be the right fish, the right angler, at the
- 49:52Speaker 18: right time. I think you can tweak it a little
- 49:55Speaker 18: bit by if you want to break that record, or
- 49:58Speaker 18: just break your own fishing record, you in the right locations.
- 50:02Speaker 18: I live on Sabine Lake. I mean there's a really
- 50:04Speaker 18: nice fish called in Sabine Lake. You know, twelve pounds,
- 50:07Speaker 18: a huge fish. It's a long shot from the sixteen pounds.
- 50:10Speaker 18: If I were wanting to break a record for trout
- 50:13Speaker 18: in Texas, I would focus my efforts in Lower Laguna,
- 50:16Speaker 18: Madre baff and Bay, that lower Laguna area, and I
- 50:20Speaker 18: might even try some of the near shore surf and
- 50:23Speaker 18: just try some really hardcore, strange tactics. I think there's
- 50:26Speaker 18: some bigger fish in the surf then we give them
- 50:28Speaker 18: credit for and things like that, But I don't think
- 50:32Speaker 18: there's a formula to really go out and break this record.
- 50:37Speaker 18: It's not like you can monitor them as much as
- 50:39Speaker 18: you can bass. I mean, there's some small clear lakes
- 50:41Speaker 18: in California where people named the bass. There was a
- 50:43Speaker 18: famous bass out there that people had named and they
- 50:46Speaker 18: hooked it, they did all kinds of stuff, and it
- 50:48Speaker 18: was a twenty something pound bass. It was an unbelievable bass.
- 50:52Speaker 18: But that's not true with speckled trout. They're a very
- 50:54Speaker 18: elusive fish. They're a very mysterious fish. Management comes into play,
- 51:00Speaker 18: natural history comes into play.
- 51:02Speaker 9: In my opinion, if I look.
- 51:03Speaker 18: At the Louisiana list, I think Louisiana has pretty much
- 51:08Speaker 18: killed off so many trout that it's not hurting the fishery.
- 51:11Speaker 18: I don't think in terms of numbers, but it might
- 51:13Speaker 18: have hurt it in terms of the overall genetics of
- 51:17Speaker 18: those fish. And I say this for another reason because
- 51:21Speaker 18: I found some stuff in my research that was super fascinating.
- 51:25Speaker 18: I love catching sand trout.
- 51:27Speaker 9: I also love.
- 51:27Speaker 18: Catching golf trout. Sandstrout the more brown ones and the
- 51:30Speaker 18: gulf child the more silver ones, and sometimes they lumped
- 51:32Speaker 18: them together and call them white trout. Check this out though,
- 51:36Speaker 18: looking at the Louisiana records, this was mind blowing. In
- 51:40Speaker 18: nineteen seventy three, the year I was born, there was
- 51:43Speaker 18: an eleven pound sand trout or golf trout here caught
- 51:49Speaker 18: in Louisiana about Donald Marion. Same year James Domez caught
- 51:55Speaker 18: a ten point five zero pound sand trout.
- 52:00Speaker 9: Believable.
- 52:01Speaker 18: Now, if you look at the Louisiana records, the tenth
- 52:03Speaker 18: place was called in nineteen seventy five, and that was
- 52:06Speaker 18: Jimmy Hill seven point twenty five in the nineteen seventies.
- 52:10Speaker 18: Every fish but one caught in nineteen eighty one, that
- 52:13Speaker 18: was eight pounds. The top ten Louisiana sand trout were
- 52:18Speaker 18: all caught.
- 52:19Speaker 9: In the nineteen seventies.
- 52:21Speaker 18: Now, if you look into other records, it's equally fascinating.
- 52:25Speaker 18: And the other states ironically don't have as many fish listed.
- 52:28Speaker 18: But I want you to look at numbers in terms
- 52:30Speaker 18: of size on some of these sand trout and stuff
- 52:33Speaker 18: called other states. If you look at sand trout caught
- 52:37Speaker 18: in Mississippi, the record is six point ninety six pounds
- 52:42Speaker 18: caught in two thousand and nine. That's a fairly recent record.
- 52:45Speaker 18: If you look at Alabama, you have a six pound
- 52:50Speaker 18: ten ounce fish caught in nineteen ninety seven. Now, sometimes
- 52:54Speaker 18: sand trout and gulf trout are used interchangeably, and they're
- 52:58Speaker 18: caught a white trout in low together and sometimes they
- 53:01Speaker 18: called a silver sea trout, and then you have the
- 53:03Speaker 18: sand the sea trout.
- 53:05Speaker 19: Guys, do you want to earn some serious points with

- 53:39Speaker 20: Cowboys are coming off probably their best all around game

- 53:44Speaker 20: a score of forty four to twenty two. Dallas has
- 53:47Speaker 20: to turn the page, though, because they are taking on
- 53:48Speaker 20: a team that scored thirty three points in the fourth
- 53:51Speaker 20: quarter alone last week in the Denver Broncos. Head coach
