Transcript
- 0:25Day 20, first day of walking after a rest day, see how the body feels,
- 0:3121 kilometers from Burgos to Hornilla.
- 0:35We came across a marker fairly early on in our walk today and it was at 501
- 0:43kilometers and we got a little bit excited and took a photo because we started at 790 kilometers,
- 0:50in St. John.
- 0:51And so we were just about to tick into the 400s. So that was pretty exciting.
- 0:56And some people were walking past and I said, oh, we're about to go into the 400s.
- 1:00And they were from France and they were very polite, but having a conversation
- 1:06with them, they hadn't started in St.
- 1:09John. They had started in the middle of France.
- 1:12So they were up about a thousand kilometre mark and we were celebrating going
- 1:17from a little over 290 kilometres.
- 1:20Later on, we had lunch and once again, having a conversation with a lady about
- 1:26where she had started and she had started in Belgium.
- 1:31And last year she had walked from Belgium to Pamploma. And so this time she
- 1:36had started in Pamploma and she was going to walk to Santiago.
- 1:40Now, the two people from France, they would have been a bit younger than us.
- 1:44The people from Belgium, they would have been older.
- 1:47Just goes to show you, you know, these huge distances can be achieved bit by bit by bit each day.
- 1:54Today we move out of the first section into the second section, the second third.
- 2:01So this section is, I suppose, a test of the mind as the first section was a test of the body.
- 2:09And in the second section, we walk through the meseta. and I'm still not fully
- 2:14sure what is to be expected in the meseta but from what we understand,
- 2:20the scenery doesn't change a whole lot.
- 2:23Long paths through the wheat fields, the cereal fields, really a cereal bowl of Spain.
- 2:31It can be really hot and dry on the meseta.
- 2:35We're obviously walking at the beginning of spring.
- 2:38Today was blue skies, sunny. still cool, but it was, it was, the sun was really nice.
- 2:45You could see how it could get very hot and dry in the summer,
- 2:48particularly if there's not a whole lot of rain around.
- 2:50There's, there's, there's not a whole lot of shade in the Meseta.
- 2:53For us today, it didn't really kick in until after lunch.
- 2:56So we only had a couple of hours, but we'll see how the next eight days go,
- 3:01because including today, it's a nine day stretch of about 20 kilometers each
- 3:06day to get us through our, our next rest stop.
- 3:09Which is Leon. One of the highlights today is that we went through a small little
- 3:15village called Rabbe della Calzadas, and there's a little stone church there,
- 3:22and a religious sister ran out and directed us inside the church,
- 3:27and she was very excited to have us there and wanted to know where we were from,
- 3:31and then she blessed us and presented us with a little medal to wear around
- 3:37our necks for the journey as a protection and I suppose a sign of the religious
- 3:44lengths of this Camino as well. But that was very, that was exciting.
- 3:50We'd seen this church and this religious sister on some of the YouTube clips
- 3:55and we know that she likes to bless all the pilgrims as they go past and even
- 3:59known to leave the church and sort of get out there on the trail as well.
- 4:04So that was a nice thing today.
- 4:08But yeah, the 21 kilometers after a rest day, that was fine.
- 4:13The only thing was the toes on my right foot after a rest day decided not to cooperate today at all.
- 4:19They were just coming sort of back underneath each other and irritating each other.
- 4:23But we are carrying something called hiker's wool, which I think is just merino
- 4:28wool from the merino sheep.
- 4:30And you use it to sort of pack in between your foot and the sock if you're getting
- 4:35a hotspot or, you know, to prevent any irritations in the socks.
- 4:40And I tried it today for the first time, sort of jammed it between the toes and it worked.
- 4:46I put it in after about one or two kilometers and didn't have any issues for
- 4:50the remainder of the day.
- 4:52The end of the day was this beautiful descent.
- 4:56You sort of been rolling through this never-ending path, eventually trying to
- 5:03get to the end of it over the next ridge, over the next ridge,
- 5:07over the next ridge, and then eventually you get to this descent.
- 5:11And there's this green middle chair up the top. It's got the name of the town,
- 5:15of the village that you're approaching,
- 5:17and then it's quite a steep descent and probably about a 20,
- 5:2225 minute walk then into the village. So we got here in good time.
- 5:27Yeah, that's the first day of this nine day stretch as we head to Leon towards our next rest day.
