- 0:00Speaker 1: The Justice Department released a new batch of documents in
- 0:03Speaker 1: the Jeffrey Epstein investigation, including chilling new evidence that some
- 0:07Speaker 1: viewers may find disturbing. This is a jailhouse letter apparently
- 0:11Speaker 1: written by a Jeffrey Epstein. This is Jay Epstein, and
- 0:14Speaker 1: it was sent to another infamous sex offender, that would
- 0:17Speaker 1: be Larry Nasser. The letter appears to include a reference
- 0:20Speaker 1: to President Trump, and should note President Trump is not
- 0:23Speaker 1: accused of any criminal wrongdoing.
- 0:25Speaker 2: And I just spoke to a survivor of Jeffrey Epstein's abuse,
- 0:27Speaker 2: Hailey Robeson a short time ago. Here's what she said,
- 0:31Speaker 2: and DOJ says some of these things are salacious and
- 0:35Speaker 2: there's no truth behind it.
- 0:36Speaker 1: That's the statement it just released. But what do you
- 0:39Speaker 1: think about the mention of Trump in that letter and
- 0:42Speaker 1: what it said.
- 0:45Speaker 3: I think it's very apparent in that specific letter that
- 0:49Speaker 3: was just publicized from the Epstein files, I think it's
- 0:52Speaker 3: very apparent that there are a group of men that
- 0:56Speaker 3: enjoy the company of young women and chill. And I
- 1:01Speaker 3: think that letter emphasizes that he knew what was going on,
- 1:06Speaker 3: and that enough, that complicity is enough for me to
- 1:10Speaker 3: know you have no business being in the position of power.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Strong words there from Haley Roads and let's go live
- 1:17Speaker 1: now to see it, and senior reporter Marshall Cohen join
- 1:19Speaker 1: us here in the situation room. So walk us through
- 1:22Speaker 1: that letter. What did it actually say?
- 1:24Speaker 4: Marshall?
- 1:24Speaker 5: Yeah, Pam, So let's be really clear about what we
- 1:27Speaker 5: know and what we don't know. We have actually been
- 1:29Speaker 5: aware for a couple of years that Epstein tried to
- 1:32Speaker 5: send a letter or maybe did send a letter to
- 1:34Speaker 5: Nasser from prison that's been out there. We have never
- 1:37Speaker 5: seen it before, and it apparently was in the drop
- 1:40Speaker 5: today from the Justice Department. It was written to LN
- 1:45Speaker 5: Larry Nasser on the envelope and it was signed by
- 1:48Speaker 5: Jay Epstein, and it was postmarked just a couple of
- 1:52Speaker 5: days after Epstein's suicide. No conspiracy there. It's not too
- 1:56Speaker 5: crazy to think that prison officials will need to look
- 1:59Speaker 5: at stuff before goes out in the mail. So it's
- 2:01Speaker 5: dated just a few days after that suicide. And I
- 2:04Speaker 5: will read for you what it said. And as you mentioned, Pam,
- 2:06Speaker 5: it's kind of disturbing. This is the letter quote. As
- 2:10Speaker 5: you know by now, I have taken the short root home.
- 2:13Speaker 5: Good luck. We shared one thing our love and caring
- 2:17Speaker 5: for young ladies and the hope that they'd reach their
- 2:19Speaker 5: full potential. Our president also shares our love of young
- 2:24Speaker 5: New Bile girls, which is obviously the disgusting words of
- 2:27Speaker 5: one sexual predator to another. But I should make clear
- 2:31Speaker 5: that Donald Trump has never been accused of any sexual
- 2:34Speaker 5: wrongdoing by law enforcement, and obviously he's never been charged
- 2:37Speaker 5: with any of these Epstein related crimes.
- 2:39Speaker 1: And so the short route home reference, do we think
- 2:42Speaker 1: that's him talking about dying by suicide because he's because
- 2:45Speaker 1: it came out a few days.
- 2:46Speaker 5: After the timeline would seem to suggest.
- 2:48Speaker 1: So yeah, we're also seeing this twenty twenty one mar
- 2:52Speaker 1: alogue subpoena relating to the Gillian Maxwell case. This is
- 2:56Speaker 1: new right Do we not know about the subpoena?
- 2:58Speaker 4: Tomorologo.
- 2:58Speaker 5: I didn't know about it.
- 3:00Speaker 1: I told Marshall Cohen, You've been all over the stories.
- 3:01Speaker 5: I don't think it was out there before our colleague
- 3:04Speaker 5: Michael Williams found it this morning in the batch of
- 3:07Speaker 5: thirty thousand documents. A subpoena sent by the Justice Department
- 3:12Speaker 5: to Maro a Lago October twenty twenty one, just a
- 3:15Speaker 5: few weeks before the start of the Galain Maxwell trial.
- 3:18Speaker 5: It is redacted, but it is clear through the redactions
- 3:22Speaker 5: that they were looking for employment records about someone we
- 3:26Speaker 5: don't know who, But I should point out that we
- 3:29Speaker 5: do know that there was one very well known person
- 3:31Speaker 5: that did work at mari A Lago when it was
- 3:33Speaker 5: actually recruited to work for Epstein, and that was a
- 3:36Speaker 5: Virginia Jiuffrey, who was one of Epstein's victims. Not sure
- 3:40Speaker 5: if the subpoena is about her, but there's been a
- 3:41Speaker 5: lot of talk about her being at both mar A
- 3:44Speaker 5: Lago and Epstein's estate, and she died by suicide earlier
- 3:49Speaker 5: this year.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Yeah, very sad. How was the DOJ responding to all
- 3:51Speaker 1: of these revelations because it put out a statement with
- 3:54Speaker 1: this batch, but not yeah, the first one.
- 3:57Speaker 5: They went on the offensive this morning, and on offense
- 4:01Speaker 5: to defend Donald Trump. Let me read for you what
- 4:05Speaker 5: they put out in a tweet this morning as they
- 4:07Speaker 5: rolled out this batch of tens of thousands of files.
- 4:10Speaker 5: They said, some of these documents contain untrue and sensationalist
- 4:14Speaker 5: claims made against President Trump that were submitted to the
- 4:17Speaker 5: FBI right before the twenty twenty election. To be clear,
- 4:21Speaker 5: these claims were unfounded and false. If they had a
- 4:23Speaker 5: shred of credibility, they certainly would have been weaponized against
- 4:27Speaker 5: Trump already. So framing the entire conversation right off the
- 4:31Speaker 5: bat to say, if you see stuff about Trump, don't
- 4:34Speaker 5: believe it. But as the woman you just spoke to
- 4:37Speaker 5: in the last hour made clear, there's a lot of
- 4:39Speaker 5: stuff in here that has been vetted and verified. Maxwell
- 4:43Speaker 5: was convicted Epstein. Before he was charged with the federal case,
- 4:48Speaker 5: he had been convicted in a state case twenty years earlier.
- 4:52Speaker 5: So you know, the Justice Department sort of massaging the
- 4:56Speaker 5: situation here trying to defend Trump. But as we've seen,
- 4:59Speaker 5: there's a lot of stuff in here that has been
- 5:01Speaker 5: verified and has vindicated a lot of those victims.
- 5:04Speaker 1: All right, Marshall Cohen, thank you as always. I know
- 5:06Speaker 1: you and the team have a lot of work going
- 5:08Speaker 1: through these documents.
- 5:09Speaker 6: Want to bring in Nick Ackerman, former assistant special Watergate prosecutor.
- 5:13Speaker 6: He joins us by phone, So Nick, a letter like
- 5:17Speaker 6: that from Jeffrey Ebstein in the days before he took
- 5:22Speaker 6: his own life. Epstein, of course, who had a plea
- 5:24Speaker 6: deal from years before and was accused of sexual abuse
- 5:27Speaker 6: at the time he wrote it, a letter like that
- 5:29Speaker 6: written to another sex abuser, does it have any legal significance, Well, I.
- 5:36Speaker 4: Don't know how much legal significance it has. It certainly
- 5:40Speaker 4: corroborates what we've heard from other victims that Donald Trump
- 5:46Speaker 4: had an inclination to grab women and miss hues his
- 5:51Speaker 4: positioned in various ways before he became president. And it's
- 5:55Speaker 4: consistent with all these other people have said. And it's
- 5:58Speaker 4: also consistent with Donald Trump's fiftieth birthday wish to Jeffrey Epstein.
- 6:04Speaker 4: So whether or not this would be admissible in a
- 6:06Speaker 4: court of law is a whole different story. But certainly
- 6:10Speaker 4: from a political standpoint, and from the fact that this
- 6:13Speaker 4: is something that Jeffrey Epstein is saying. We know that
- 6:16Speaker 4: they were very close and they're very good friends, and
- 6:20Speaker 4: that this is pretty damning. I mean to go on
- 6:24Speaker 4: with this letter. It says in that letter, when a
- 6:27Speaker 4: young beauty walked by, he looked to grab snatch, whereas
- 6:30Speaker 4: we ended up snatching grubbed in the mess halls of
- 6:33Speaker 4: the system, meaning the prison system. And he signed it
- 6:37Speaker 4: saying life is unfair yours, Jay Epstein. So you've got
- 6:42Speaker 4: two essentially abusers that are writing to each other, and
- 6:48Speaker 4: in the course of that Jeffrey Epstein references Donald Trump,
- 6:52Speaker 4: who has gotten away with all of this.
- 6:55Speaker 6: It is worth ooting, obviously that President Trump or Donald
- 6:57Speaker 6: Trump not charged with anything in connection with Jeffrey Epstein
- 7:02Speaker 6: at all. It's also possible that Jeffrey Epstein was trying
- 7:06Speaker 6: to stick it to Donald Trump, who was president at
- 7:09Speaker 6: this point the moment that the letter was written of
- 7:13Speaker 6: greater perhaps legal significance.
- 7:15Speaker 4: Nick.
- 7:15Speaker 6: Is the other information that came out overnight a letter
- 7:18Speaker 6: written by an attorney for the Southern District of New
- 7:20Speaker 6: York which indicated, and this is a verbatim, that Donald
- 7:24Speaker 6: Trump traveled on Epstein's private jet many more times than
- 7:27Speaker 6: previously had been recorded, or that we were aware and
- 7:31Speaker 6: at times on two of the flights, two of the
- 7:35Speaker 6: passengers were women who would be possible witnesses in a
- 7:39Speaker 6: Glain Maxwell case. Now, again, this letter was written at
- 7:43Speaker 6: the time late in Donald Trump's first term, when he
- 7:46Speaker 6: was president. But the idea that Trump had been on
- 7:50Speaker 6: a plane with two people who were witnesses potentially in
- 7:53Speaker 6: a federal case was the significance there.
- 7:57Speaker 4: Well. The significance is that Donald Trump would of course
- 8:00Speaker 4: be a potential witness as well, which means that he
- 8:04Speaker 4: could have been called at the trial of Gislaine Maxwell.
- 8:08Speaker 4: So that's pretty shocking. The fact that he could have
- 8:13Speaker 4: been called was a witness. That's something that I don't
- 8:15Speaker 4: think has been reported before. And it also goes to
- 8:19Speaker 4: Donald Trump's knowledge of what Epstein was doing. I mean,
- 8:22Speaker 4: don't forget. He's been backing off at every point he can,
- 8:25Speaker 4: claiming that he had no idea that Jeffrey Epstein was
- 8:28Speaker 4: doing anything illegal. But as these Epstein files come out,
- 8:32Speaker 4: with the drip drip drip, we have learned that Donald
- 8:36Speaker 4: Trump knew a bit more than he's acknowledged. For example,
- 8:40Speaker 4: there's the email of April second, twenty and eleven, where
- 8:47Speaker 4: it reflects an email between Epstein and Maxwell where it
- 8:52Speaker 4: says that Donald Trump spent hours in Epstein's house with Virginia,
- 8:59Speaker 4: who is one of the victims of Jeffrey Epstein's you know,
- 9:04Speaker 4: sexual escapades.
- 9:06Speaker 6: Of course, Virginia's Giffrey, before she died, said that Donald
- 9:10Speaker 6: Trump did not do anything wrong or untour. And it's
- 9:13Speaker 6: also worth noting that the plane trips in question here
- 9:15Speaker 6: between nineteen ninety three and nineteen ninety six, a time
- 9:19Speaker 6: before Epstein was charged with anything. Nick Ackerman, A lot
- 9:23Speaker 6: of contexts here, a lot of new information coming out,
- 9:25Speaker 6: seeing it, continues to sift through it. Thank you very much,
