- 0:00Speaker 1: Powered back with Dan Hurley. We're live in our studios
- 0:02Speaker 1: here in the Duncan Music Lounge in Hartford. iHeart Headquarters.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Husky's back to back champions. By the way, your NCAA record,
- 0:10Speaker 1: I was fourteen and four pretty good, pretty good, twelve
- 0:13Speaker 1: in a row. Yeah, I mean didn't start like you wanted.
- 0:17Speaker 2: But no, no, the bubble game, no, I'll still you know,
- 0:22Speaker 2: we were I take responsibility for that one, but that
- 0:25Speaker 2: was a different type of situation.
- 0:27Speaker 1: I'm on Wayne Norman and I had to sit right
- 0:30Speaker 1: here are you in the bubble right? Yeah, we were stuck.
- 0:32Speaker 1: We had to watch you on, like what is going
- 0:35Speaker 1: on here? This is an NCAA tournament game and we
- 0:37Speaker 1: are sitting here in the studio.
- 0:39Speaker 2: That was a bad setup. I wish I would have
- 0:41Speaker 2: when we lost that semi final game to Creighton and
- 0:44Speaker 2: RJ got the concussion, and you know, and then James cramped.
- 0:49Speaker 2: James book Knight had cramps the night before, so he
- 0:51Speaker 2: was useless Scrayton in the semis and then we lost,
- 0:55Speaker 2: and then they made us. They threatened us that if
- 0:57Speaker 2: we left the hotel for like right the next couple
- 1:00Speaker 2: of days, that because we wanted to take the players home,
- 1:03Speaker 2: let them sleep in their own bed, let them you know,
- 1:06Speaker 2: get a little bit. But we went right to the bubble.
- 1:08Speaker 2: We went from bubble to bubble and tom some people
- 1:14Speaker 2: responded better in a situation. Some people ate bubbles. Plus
- 1:18Speaker 2: we couldn't shoot.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Well, yeah, that was a turning point your coaching career.
- 1:23Speaker 2: I think now we played so much now that game. No, Well, yeah,
- 1:27Speaker 2: because the next year we were tactically better that that
- 1:32Speaker 2: year that you're talking about when we lost to Maryland,
- 1:36Speaker 2: our tactics weren't great and the roster construction, we didn't
- 1:39Speaker 2: have enough shooting, enough passing, enough, you know, people that
- 1:42Speaker 2: could think the game. So then that next year we
- 1:45Speaker 2: started running better stuff, but we hadn't made the roster adjustments.
- 1:48Speaker 2: We didn't make the roster adjustments until a bunch of
- 1:51Speaker 2: the players left that one year and everyone was losing
- 1:54Speaker 2: their mind, and we knew that there was going to
- 1:56Speaker 2: be a lot of players leave to the one that
- 1:59Speaker 2: probably surprised us, Corey Floyd. The rest of them, we
- 2:02Speaker 2: probably we knew we were gonna have a chance to
- 2:05Speaker 2: get a lot more shooting, passing, get a couple of
- 2:08Speaker 2: vets to support the young.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Guys, roster retention in the nil era is is that's
- 2:14Speaker 1: a challenge, right, I mean, I thought it was impressive that,
- 2:17Speaker 1: you know, Jalen Stewart didn't go anywhere, solo ball didn't
- 2:19Speaker 1: go anywhere, Jane Ross didn't go anywhere, and all three
- 2:22Speaker 1: of a freshman you know, I had little glimpses during
- 2:24Speaker 1: the season, but they didn't play that much. They could
- 2:26Speaker 1: have said I'm out of here. They could have you know,
- 2:28Speaker 1: where's the exit, but they didn't do that. Why do
- 2:30Speaker 1: you think that is well?
- 2:31Speaker 2: Because, I mean I think freshman year for us could
- 2:33Speaker 2: be tough. You know, unless you're exceptional, it's going to
- 2:38Speaker 2: be really really hard to start for us. But that
- 2:41Speaker 2: but you can do it. We've had freshmen start for
- 2:44Speaker 2: us and then we've had freshmen give us a lot
- 2:46Speaker 2: of you know, just good minutes as freshmen, and then
- 2:49Speaker 2: you try to predict sophomore year they're gonna have a
- 2:52Speaker 2: big jump, you know, like Jordan Hawkins. You know he
- 2:54Speaker 2: had that even though you know he didn't finish the
- 2:57Speaker 2: year and he was up and down as a freshman.
- 2:59Speaker 2: He had that eighteen point game against Auburn in the
- 3:04Speaker 2: Bahamas where people are like, whoa this guy could be
- 3:06Speaker 2: a monster someday. And Solo did that for us last
- 3:09Speaker 2: year VSUS Carolina the Garden. You know, Jalen Stewart did
- 3:12Speaker 2: it for us in the Biggiest Tournament. He helped us
- 3:15Speaker 2: win it, and he played really well there, and so
- 3:18Speaker 2: he had his moments and then I think we you know,
- 3:20Speaker 2: we're going to get Obviously Jayden Ross were high on
- 3:22Speaker 2: j Ross is like he's like a rocket ship right now.
- 3:25Speaker 1: He did he get a haircut. He had the craziest hair.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Like, Yeah, I mean we've been, I've been. I've been
- 3:29Speaker 2: common with Kamani. I don't think it that his hair
- 3:32Speaker 2: makes him look like the toughest.
- 3:37Speaker 1: So it's an image thing. What's that it's an image
- 3:39Speaker 1: thing with.
- 3:40Speaker 2: I don't know. I mean, listen, he's exactly what we
- 3:42Speaker 2: need right now. He's like six seven, He's like flying
- 3:44Speaker 2: around the court. You know, he's shooting threes, he's trying
- 3:47Speaker 2: to get every offensive rebound, he's attacking the rim, he's
- 3:50Speaker 2: just trying to play defense, disrupting. I mean, he's a
- 3:54Speaker 2: you know, he looks really good right now. So I
- 3:57Speaker 2: mean we're high on what he's doing.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Yeah, So low ball last year started ten games because
- 4:02Speaker 1: Steph Castle was injured, and he did a nice job,
- 4:05Speaker 1: he really did. You mentioned the game he had I
- 4:07Speaker 1: think in the Garden. Yeah, I guess against North Carolina.
- 4:11Speaker 1: We saw him in Mohegan. He looks like he might
- 4:14Speaker 1: be ready to take the next step. Is that Is
- 4:16Speaker 1: that accurate?
- 4:17Speaker 2: We have a lot of bets on that. I mean,
- 4:19Speaker 2: we're betting heavy. He could do it. You know, we're
- 4:22Speaker 2: banking it. He could do it. And you know we
- 4:25Speaker 2: saw a lot of it in practice. You saw a
- 4:27Speaker 2: couple of it and some big games, Like I said,
- 4:30Speaker 2: Carolina game, he played well at the Garden beginning a
- 4:34Speaker 2: big East play. You know it just our first seven
- 4:38Speaker 2: last year was so hard to crack that lineup, and
- 4:40Speaker 2: as a freshman with that type of team, and and
- 4:43Speaker 2: but he had some big games for us. Like he's
- 4:46Speaker 2: shooting is reel, his scoring is real. He's clueless on defense,
- 4:52Speaker 2: like like bad awareness. But I think it's gonna get better.
- 4:55Speaker 2: It's just gonna it's gonna hurt us at times, but
- 4:58Speaker 2: then he's gonna play his way of it. But I mean,
- 5:01Speaker 2: I wouldn't be surprised if he was getting thirteen a
- 5:04Speaker 2: game or more and shooting pretty good.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Which coach is in charge of solo balls, defensive development?
- 5:12Speaker 1: Is there?
- 5:12Speaker 2: Why yell at all those guys? I mean, Luke recruited him,
- 5:15Speaker 2: so I'll yell at him, and you're blaming Kamani coaches
- 5:19Speaker 2: him and Luke recruited him.
- 5:22Speaker 1: We got a question out there. What we got is
- 5:23Speaker 1: Ken with a question for coach.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Coach you talked about the Big East being tough. Other
- 5:30Speaker 2: than you kN who do you see as the top
- 5:32Speaker 2: Big East teams coming into the season besides everyone? Yeah,
- 5:35Speaker 2: I think I heard some other. I don't spend a
- 5:38Speaker 2: whole lot of time thinking about it now. I'm thinking
- 5:40Speaker 2: about it because it's about to start. But I think
- 5:43Speaker 2: I think the bottom of the league is going to
- 5:44Speaker 2: be much better. I think like Haltman and ed are
- 5:48Speaker 2: gonna raise those levels considerably, and and Butler too with
- 5:52Speaker 2: that mode. I mean, these guys are so they're some
- 5:54Speaker 2: of the best coaches, and I mean I think Xavier
- 5:58Speaker 2: is a dark horse obviously with uh but they got
- 6:02Speaker 2: people have to stay healthy for them that you know,
- 6:05Speaker 2: they they've had horrible health luck. Creighton Marquette, Saint John's
- 6:10Speaker 2: has got like a really old roster, good roster.
- 6:15Speaker 1: All right, Dan Hurley was quick break time out. We'd
- 6:17Speaker 1: come back for the final segment live in our Duncan
- 6:20Speaker 1: Music lounge here in iHeart Headquarters in Hartford. I'm lear Field.
