- 3:15Speaker 13: and we'll have a second episode out here on Monday
- 3:19Speaker 13: morning to talk about the USC game. Because it's basketball
- 3:24Speaker 13: season already. It feels like it flew By season officially
- 3:29Speaker 13: starts tomorrow as we open up against Western Georgia.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Don't know anything about them.
- 3:38Speaker 14: Don't need to know anything about them. That's all you
- 3:40Speaker 14: need to know.
- 3:41Speaker 2: I dope you're right, and it should be right.
- 3:45Speaker 13: Fred Hoiberg entering his seventh season at the helm of
- 3:53Speaker 13: the Big Red and in today's college landscape world, and
- 3:59Speaker 13: Mike Fred is the on and about every year he's
- 4:01Speaker 13: been here.
- 4:01Speaker 2: We have some new pieces to our roster. We do
- 4:06Speaker 2: have some returners, though I will say it might be
- 4:09Speaker 2: I don't know one of the highest return returning group
- 4:13Speaker 2: that Hoiberg's had Nebraska.
- 4:16Speaker 14: I bet you're right. I think last year probably would
- 4:18Speaker 14: have been close two years ago. Maybe it was two
- 4:24Speaker 14: years ago. You're right, it's it's definitely up there though.
- 4:28Speaker 13: And what we lacked or seemed to lack last year
- 4:31Speaker 13: was shooting the ball on the perimeter was a big,
- 4:35Speaker 13: big thing. Our defense has come a long ways under
- 4:39Speaker 13: Nate Lenser as our defensive coach, and we still have
- 4:44Speaker 13: the no middle scheme where you know there. We'll we'll
- 4:50Speaker 13: talk about the pros and cons of that, I'm sure
- 4:52Speaker 13: throughout the year on how how that can help and
- 4:56Speaker 13: also cost you some points.
- 5:00Speaker 2: But it really is going to come down to me
- 5:03Speaker 2: this year is do we have a stud that is
- 5:07Speaker 2: going to.
- 5:08Speaker 13: Step up for us to fill the Bryce Williams role.
- 5:13Speaker 13: I I don't know, Austin, how you feel about this. Oh,
- 5:18Speaker 13: by the way, that's not here. Kind of forgot about him.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Uh, Bryce was I'm gonna say it, maybe the best
- 5:30Speaker 2: Nebraska basketball player in our lifetime, which.
- 5:34Speaker 14: Is funny saying that because there are currently two Nebraska
- 5:37Speaker 14: basketball players actively on NBA rosters. Wow, I didn't even
- 5:47Speaker 14: think of it. You're probably right, though.
- 5:49Speaker 13: It's just the impact he had on the team itself.
- 5:53Speaker 13: It he just after losing him. That that's the That's
- 5:57Speaker 13: the concern I think going into this year year is
- 6:01Speaker 13: do we have someone or do we need someone to
- 6:04Speaker 13: step in and fill that role for us to have
- 6:07Speaker 13: a I'm gonna say a better year.
- 6:11Speaker 2: In twenty twenty five and twenty six.
- 6:17Speaker 14: Well, so, like you said, last year, our shooting was
- 6:19Speaker 14: a problem. Are our offensive one? I guess before we talk,
- 6:28Speaker 14: just we have to remember where we ended last year.
- 6:31Speaker 14: Last year, So just to frame what happened last year
- 6:36Speaker 14: for those of you who don't remember, we looked like
- 6:38Speaker 14: we're going to be a tournament team, and then we
- 6:39Speaker 14: looked like we weren't going to be a tournament team,
- 6:41Speaker 14: and then we went on a run and beat like
- 6:43Speaker 14: three top twenty five teams and won like six of
- 6:46Speaker 14: eight and is like, oh, we're a lock to make
- 6:50Speaker 14: the tournament. And then we lost the last five and
- 6:53Speaker 14: we didn't even make the Big ten tournament. And then
- 6:55Speaker 14: we made it to the Crown Basketball Championship, which, for
- 6:59Speaker 14: the of you don't remember, was a brand new tournament
- 7:02Speaker 14: that isn't the n I T but was kind of
- 7:05Speaker 14: ballyhooed as a similar to the n I T. And
- 7:07Speaker 14: then we won that.
- 7:10Speaker 13: So thanks for thanks for recap, but I kind of
- 7:13Speaker 13: forgot I remembered, like the end of it. I do
- 7:17Speaker 13: kind of forget how it.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Was all the way in, like all the way out,
- 7:21Speaker 2: all the way back in, all the way back.
- 7:23Speaker 14: In, back out, and it wasn't even like it was like, Okay,
- 7:25Speaker 14: you guys are gonna make the tournament for sure. And
- 7:27Speaker 14: then we didn't even make the Big ten Tournament. We
- 7:29Speaker 14: freaking just pissed down our legs the end of the year.
- 7:33Speaker 14: So and then we won the Crown Tournament.
- 7:36Speaker 2: So let's even rewind a little further.
- 7:39Speaker 13: Two years ago was our NCAA tournament birth where we.
- 7:44Speaker 14: Looked great and we're the higher seed. We had to
- 7:46Speaker 14: get a bad seeding and we come out and we
- 7:50Speaker 14: have the greatest four minutes of Nebraska basketball history. And
- 7:53Speaker 14: then we followed apart to Texas A and M.
- 7:58Speaker 13: So we feel like the way these seasons have ended
- 8:03Speaker 13: have been like good but also wanting more. That's a
- 8:09Speaker 13: good way of putting it. Especially like last year, it
- 8:12Speaker 13: was like the best we could do given that we
- 8:15Speaker 13: got in the crown, was to win the crown, and
- 8:16Speaker 13: we did that and that was awesome and I'm so
- 8:21Speaker 13: glad we did that and didn't just fold up as
- 8:23Speaker 13: a program and as a team. So given that's where
- 8:26Speaker 13: we're at, it's a very good finish. But we don't
- 8:30Speaker 13: want to be in the crown. We want to be
- 8:33Speaker 13: in the tournament and win a tournament game. And that's
- 8:37Speaker 13: what this team is after right now.
- 8:39Speaker 2: That's the goal.
- 8:40Speaker 13: That is the expectation that I think keeps people excited
- 8:45Speaker 13: and wanting this program to move forward under Hoiberg and
- 8:51Speaker 13: the staff like and that's what we want.
- 8:53Speaker 14: I would not say Fred Hoiberg is on a hot
- 8:55Speaker 14: seat is you know, like I think, if we don't
- 9:00Speaker 14: make the tournament, it starts to warm up. But it
- 9:04Speaker 14: is they get year seven. First two years he only
- 9:07Speaker 14: won seven games or he won fourteen games total between
- 9:10Speaker 14: the first two years and they went ten and twenty
- 9:12Speaker 14: two five hundred, and then the two years after that
- 9:15Speaker 14: he won more twenty or more games. So I think,
- 9:20Speaker 14: you know what, I think our expectation is a six
- 9:23Speaker 14: hundred and more team for sure.
- 9:28Speaker 2: But so I'm with you. I I was gonna save
- 9:32Speaker 2: this for the end and talk about Hoiberg. I don't
- 9:35Speaker 2: I agree.
- 9:35Speaker 13: I don't think from a expectation progreation and the what
- 9:41Speaker 13: Troy Danam's thinking and the people that are making the decisions,
- 9:45Speaker 13: I don't think they're having Hoiberger on the hot seat
- 9:49Speaker 13: unless they don't go well this year.
- 9:52Speaker 14: It totally falls off the way. I mean, like if
- 9:55Speaker 14: it's like blow five hundred and it looks it looks.
- 9:58Speaker 13: Bad, which it shuts didn't happen. We'll get to the
- 10:03Speaker 13: schedule here in a little bit. I mean getting to
- 10:08Speaker 13: the tournament. I think it's very important now for Hoiburg
- 10:14Speaker 13: where he's at. I think more so in the last
- 10:16Speaker 13: few years and you made that comment, so I'm gonna
- 10:20Speaker 13: kind of follow that. It's obviously not an easy thing
- 10:22Speaker 13: to do. Well, maybe easier if they keep expanding it.
- 10:25Speaker 13: But I think that is important that we're not just
- 10:29Speaker 13: a stalemate twelve, you know, twelve to sixteen team in
- 10:35Speaker 13: the Big Ten, and every year, like I do, think there's.
- 10:38Speaker 14: Still I say, preseason ranks fourteen.
- 10:42Speaker 13: So so that I'm gonna like again, I think Hoyburg
- 10:47Speaker 13: last couple of years, we've obviously seen.
- 10:49Speaker 2: The program move somewhere.
- 10:53Speaker 13: But now I'm gonna call this the year three of
- 10:55Speaker 13: the movie somewhere, like we need to we need to
- 10:59Speaker 13: see that next step now and otherwise it's gonna it's
- 11:03Speaker 13: just stale.
- 11:03Speaker 2: And and I'm gonna mention this too. He's getting paid.
- 11:07Speaker 2: I don't know exactly where.
- 11:08Speaker 13: I know he's a top twenty paid coach in college
- 11:10Speaker 13: basketball right now. He's higher that he's in there. He
- 11:13Speaker 13: could be closer to ten. I don't know, but that's
- 11:16Speaker 13: saying something of what the expectation is here. And and
- 11:20Speaker 13: for me, as far as replacement coaches go, with Nebraska basketball,
- 11:24Speaker 13: there's not a history, there's not a it's an expectation, correct,
- 11:30Speaker 13: So for me, I do like I think this. I
- 11:32Speaker 13: think you gotta win an you gotta make a tournament
- 11:34Speaker 13: game and compete in it.
- 11:36Speaker 2: This year, I agree for me to for me to
- 11:38Speaker 2: feel good about where it's going. And I think that
- 11:40Speaker 2: we can.
- 11:41Speaker 14: Yeh.
- 11:43Speaker 13: I also don't know that that's like a better than
- 11:45Speaker 13: a fifty to fifty odds though, I think that. I mean,
- 11:47Speaker 13: I think that's that you're flipping a coin and saying,
- 11:50Speaker 13: let's make a tournament game or not.
- 11:51Speaker 2: I think that's where I'm at.
- 11:52Speaker 14: Yeah, yeah, I probably agree. I mean, there's you know,
- 11:56Speaker 14: Wolford won how many games a couple of years ago
- 11:59Speaker 14: in the tournament, Like we can we we should be
- 12:01Speaker 14: better than Woolford. Yeah, I agree. I don't. This season,
- 12:08Speaker 14: the expectation is make the tournament, not necessarily win a
- 12:11Speaker 14: tournament game. I think. I mean as Nebraska basketball fans
- 12:15Speaker 14: are are the as far as a return to Glory
- 12:18Speaker 14: podcast or Nebraska basketball, it's more of a sniff glory
- 12:24Speaker 14: basket Nebraska basketball podcast.
- 12:29Speaker 13: But yes, anyway, and I don't I don't want this
- 12:35Speaker 13: to sound like it is. It's just we're speaking from
- 12:38Speaker 13: a general Husker fan. The expectation level is obviously a
- 12:41Speaker 13: lot low over basketball, but I also want to call
- 12:43Speaker 13: it out that maybe isn't isn't okay all the time?
- 12:46Speaker 13: I mean it is because we haven't had a history.
- 12:48Speaker 13: But I also I don't want to be stuck with
- 12:52Speaker 13: a coach longer than we need to.
- 12:54Speaker 14: If there's an open set, there's a difference between patients
- 12:57Speaker 14: and what's sort of like settling, you know, complacency. Yeah, complacent,
- 13:02Speaker 14: there you go, yes, like we're being patient or we're
- 13:04Speaker 14: being complacent. I think at this point we've been patient.
- 13:07Speaker 14: We've seen the improvement last year, it fell off the
- 13:10Speaker 14: wheels at the very end. If we don't see it.
- 13:12Speaker 2: This year, then then it becomes the complacent conversation.
- 13:16Speaker 13: Yes, and again whether that happened now this year, if
- 13:19Speaker 13: it falls off, I completely agree he's probably not staying.
- 13:24Speaker 13: But for myself, even if we don't make a tournament
- 13:27Speaker 13: game like, I think that conversation needs to get magnified
- 13:31Speaker 13: a lot, and I don't know if it will. That's
- 13:33Speaker 13: the unfortunate part. Well, but we'll have to see how
- 13:36Speaker 13: the season goes, right, I think we'll have to see
- 13:38Speaker 13: how some of these games look. I mean, are we
- 13:40Speaker 13: competitive in these Big ten games?
- 13:42Speaker 2: Last year.
- 13:42Speaker 13: We were competitive in most all of our games. There
- 13:44Speaker 13: were a couple that got out of our hands, but
- 13:47Speaker 13: for the most part, you know, we're there, and.
- 13:52Speaker 2: I do think this is a big year for Hoiberg.
- 13:55Speaker 13: It's future in Nebraska for the music is simply the
- 13:58Speaker 13: fact that it's year seven. Like you don't you don't
- 14:00Speaker 13: get to be at a university, at a in basketball
- 14:03Speaker 13: or football for a lot of years unless you're having success.
- 14:06Speaker 13: And I would not say what we're having is ultimate success.
- 14:10Speaker 13: It's kind of improving, but it's not like we're for Nebraska.
- 14:13Speaker 13: Historically for Nebraska basketball, it's been success. But we're trying
- 14:17Speaker 13: to we're trying to not ye, trying to with that. Yeah,
- 14:19Speaker 13: we're trying to up that standard. Hoiberg's contract does go
- 14:23Speaker 13: through twenty twenty nine. Those are curious, so he does
- 14:29Speaker 13: have four three more years on his contract after this season.
- 14:33Speaker 13: Not that I'm talking firing things, just one day kind
- 14:38Speaker 13: of put where Tory Dannon's probably opinion is around him.
- 14:43Speaker 2: Correct.
- 14:43Speaker 14: Okay, now you go back current people who we left,
- 14:48Speaker 14: So you talked Bryce Williams, John Gary. Can't forget Dak's
- 14:51Speaker 14: favorite player, Jeffrey Grace never played Gavin Griffiths, Nick Jenelowski,
- 14:57Speaker 14: Braxton Me, Andrew Morgan, Aaron Ullis, Rolli Wooster. That's a
- 15:05Speaker 14: fair amount of production. Obviously, Bryce will even Joan Or
- 15:08Speaker 14: was kind of the engine that that field, that that
- 15:12Speaker 14: decent run there in the middle. But the rest of
- 15:18Speaker 14: those people, Andrew Morgan obviously have decent Rolly Wooster had
- 15:22Speaker 14: decent playing time in roles. But I think kind of
- 15:29Speaker 14: what our issue was last year was who was running
- 15:32Speaker 14: our offense, and we ended up running it through Bryce Williams,
- 15:36Speaker 14: who is very much in an attacking type of score
- 15:40Speaker 14: getting to the paint free throws.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Three level score for sure.
- 15:45Speaker 14: Yes, So I don't think we're necessarily going to replace
- 15:49Speaker 14: Bryce Williams as far as like the mold of a
- 15:53Speaker 14: wing that's going to be running our offense. I think
- 15:55Speaker 14: this year we're definitely going to have we'll talk about,
- 15:59Speaker 14: you know, our our current players, but will have more
- 16:02Speaker 14: of a traditional Sam Heiberg Sam Weiberg. We'll have a
- 16:07Speaker 14: traditional same traditional Fred Hoiberg offense where you have you know,
- 16:11Speaker 14: a point guard or a point forward running the offense
- 16:15Speaker 14: and a lot more ball movement than we did last year,
- 16:19Speaker 14: which is what we did two years ago when we
- 16:21Speaker 14: made the tournament, ball move was good. We had you know, Kaise,
- 16:25Speaker 14: very good scoring wing that we could just we were
- 16:28Speaker 14: just moving the ball really well. Then we had Rank
- 16:29Speaker 14: Mass who will talk about a little bit as well.
- 16:34Speaker 2: Well, yeah, let's just I mean rank. Rank is the
- 16:38Speaker 2: key piece I think coming back.
- 16:42Speaker 13: He was here last year, didn't play because he was
- 16:45Speaker 13: injured and sat out the whole year, but stayed a
- 16:46Speaker 13: part of the team, which I think tells a lot
- 16:49Speaker 13: about his mindset and belief in this in this coaching staff.
- 16:56Speaker 13: He to me, is going to be the focal point
- 16:59Speaker 13: of this offense. And no he's not playing point guard,
- 17:02Speaker 13: but the offense will get ran through him. Again, I
- 17:04Speaker 13: think a lot, whether it be at the top of
- 17:07Speaker 13: the key or or inside. And I think that Rank
- 17:10Speaker 13: is a good enough player too to do that. He
- 17:17Speaker 13: shot it well against the Hyu, very very well.
- 17:22Speaker 2: Make seven threes, and.
- 17:24Speaker 14: To shoot I don't I honestly don't know all year
- 17:28Speaker 14: he's going to be putting up, you know whatever, eight threes.
- 17:31Speaker 14: I don't know how many atempts he's going to average
- 17:32Speaker 14: a game. I can't imagine it's gonna be more than five.
- 17:36Speaker 14: I could be wrong.
- 17:38Speaker 13: No, I agree, I don't think. I think that's kind
- 17:39Speaker 13: of like an outlier game hopefully not. But he he
- 17:44Speaker 13: is very much going to be leading our offense, I think.
- 17:48Speaker 14: But it is.
- 17:48Speaker 2: It's not it's not your Bryce Williams kind of player.
- 17:50Speaker 2: It's not a three level score type of player. He's
- 17:53Speaker 2: also a very good passer.
- 17:55Speaker 13: Don't forget that about rank like that was maybe the
- 17:58Speaker 13: best part of his game, uh two years ago. So
- 18:03Speaker 13: that's gonna be a big addition back leading point, it
- 18:09Speaker 13: is probably gonna be JaMarcus Lawrence. From what we've seen
- 18:12Speaker 13: and heard. He transferred for those of you, you know
- 18:15Speaker 13: from Rhode Island.
- 18:19Speaker 2: You're transferred away and then transferred back. And and he.
- 18:25Speaker 13: I think is going to need to be that guard
- 18:27Speaker 13: that has the ball in his hands to create for
- 18:31Speaker 13: this offense when we need someone to create off the bounce.
- 18:34Speaker 13: I do think the offense is going to be very
- 18:37Speaker 13: more set based, action based versus running more of a
- 18:41Speaker 13: motion uh and and Jamark is going to be the
- 18:44Speaker 13: one that has to get us into those And also
- 18:47Speaker 13: when we need someone just to go create or try
- 18:50Speaker 13: to get a bucket, he's going to have to do that.
- 18:52Speaker 13: He showed signs of that in the exhibition games, which
- 18:55Speaker 13: was which was promising.
- 18:56Speaker 14: But he's going to be kind of to.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Me, the key guard.
- 18:59Speaker 14: Uh.
- 19:00Speaker 13: Then after that, and this is how I'm viewing the team.
- 19:03Speaker 13: I'm viewing kind of those two. But then after that,
- 19:04Speaker 13: I just I see all these other guys as just
- 19:08Speaker 13: very very solid role players throughout the rest of our roster.
- 19:12Speaker 13: And when I say the rest of our roster, I
- 19:14Speaker 13: do think we are going to play, especially here in
- 19:17Speaker 13: the non conference. Eleven guys and those these other nine
- 19:21Speaker 13: guys I think are going to get a lot of
- 19:22Speaker 13: equal playing time. To see which lineups and which which
- 19:25Speaker 13: fits work the best must go through the guards here
- 19:29Speaker 13: some guys that returned from last year's team Connor season,
- 19:33Speaker 13: the sharp shooting guard that transfer from Wisconsin a couple
- 19:36Speaker 13: of years ago.
- 19:37Speaker 2: Uh, he is he is back kill. Jacobson, Uh started
- 19:41Speaker 2: the b y U game, didn't start the the.
- 19:47Speaker 14: Midland game.
- 19:48Speaker 2: That was Sam Hoiberger that started that one.
- 19:51Speaker 13: But those two to me are very much the same
- 19:54Speaker 13: player in my mind, Like they're very similar in YE
- 20:00Speaker 13: three and I don't know, Crappy just a scrappy, scrappy,
- 20:06Speaker 13: pesty defenders and then.
- 20:11Speaker 2: Missing someone not in the guard side of things.
- 20:16Speaker 13: Uh in transfer guards incoming that we're gonna see time
- 20:20Speaker 13: Price Sandford.
- 20:21Speaker 2: I guess you'd call him a forward. He's he's a
- 20:26Speaker 2: length He's a lengthy dude.
- 20:28Speaker 14: Kendall Blue. Have you mentioned Kendall Blue?
- 20:30Speaker 2: Nope?
- 20:30Speaker 13: And he's the other one, Yeah, Price Sandford from Iowa.
- 20:33Speaker 13: I'm calling him a guard because he's gonna play. I mean,
- 20:36Speaker 13: he's six seven like a Ford, but he's he's gonna
- 20:39Speaker 13: play on the perimeter.
- 20:40Speaker 14: He can shoot it.
- 20:42Speaker 2: And then Kendall Blue is the other one that we're
- 20:44Speaker 2: gonna see. He's also a very lengthy guard.
- 20:48Speaker 14: He's kind of a wing six six, shoots forty two
- 20:53Speaker 14: perind the arc.
- 20:57Speaker 2: He's a lefty as well.
- 20:59Speaker 14: Man average twelve points for rebounds, two assists twenty seven minutes.
- 21:05Speaker 14: And then there's a freshman guard as well. But I
- 21:06Speaker 14: don't I don't think he'll play at all. Quentin Ryans correct. Yeah.
- 21:12Speaker 2: I think he's gonna be a guy that, you know,
- 21:13Speaker 2: scout team player there. So yeah, I think that's gonna be.
- 21:19Speaker 13: Our guard in the back court. And then the front court.
- 21:25Speaker 13: We mentioned Rank Bark is back. He's got he's got
- 21:31Speaker 13: a lot of hair this year.
- 21:32Speaker 2: You haven't seen him yet.
- 21:35Speaker 13: You know, played transfer from u C l A two
- 21:37Speaker 13: years ago. I think he'll be a key piece. He'll
- 21:39Speaker 13: play a lot of minutes. I think my big thing
- 21:42Speaker 13: for bar K is is he going to be able
- 21:44Speaker 13: to defend at a high level inside and we you
- 21:48Speaker 13: know Rank obviously is going to do a lot of
- 21:50Speaker 13: that as well. But Bark to me's a little more
- 21:54Speaker 13: solid of the body and when we do play some
- 21:58Speaker 13: of these bigger posts in the Big ten, it's that's
- 22:01Speaker 13: gonna be his job.
- 22:02Speaker 2: When Andrew Morgan and.
- 22:05Speaker 13: Brox and Mea were I mean they were very very
- 22:07Speaker 13: good at their roles last year of doing that, they
- 22:09Speaker 13: were not good offensively, neither one of them more Andrew
- 22:12Speaker 13: Morgan had his moments, but but they were They were
- 22:15Speaker 13: defenders and that's what helped last year's team. That's what
- 22:19Speaker 13: that's what is gonna have to do a lot more
- 22:21Speaker 13: this year.
- 22:22Speaker 14: Uh, He's gonna be better offensively for sure, I mean.
- 22:25Speaker 2: Yes, and he's gonna have to step up. He's got
- 22:28Speaker 2: step up.
- 22:29Speaker 14: He played twenty minutes a game, he averaged six points
- 22:31Speaker 14: and shot forty from the field for a six foot
- 22:33Speaker 14: ten guy. That's terrible, Like you should at least be
- 22:37Speaker 14: shooting four free throws and above fifty percent when you're
- 22:41Speaker 14: playing that close to the room.
- 22:45Speaker 2: I agree, Ugnis Jersemissic.
- 22:51Speaker 14: How do I do? I don't know, but I was
- 22:52Speaker 14: gonna ask you how to say? Uh?
- 22:56Speaker 13: That Central Michigan transfer sixt eleven forty five from Lithuania. Man,
- 23:04Speaker 13: he did not play in the b YU game. I
- 23:06Speaker 13: don't believe which is the game I went to, But
- 23:09Speaker 13: so I didn't get to see him watch much. But
- 23:11Speaker 13: he'll be a guy that I'm guessing is going to
- 23:14Speaker 13: play a lot of that Braxton me a type of role.
- 23:18Speaker 2: Let's see.
- 23:19Speaker 13: Jared Garcia is another one from Tulsa that transferred. He's
- 23:24Speaker 13: a senior grad transfer.
- 23:26Speaker 2: He can shoot it. Yeah, who is who's the big, big,
- 23:31Speaker 2: big dude, the seventh three dude?
- 23:34Speaker 14: Uh No, it's not on my roster.
- 23:38Speaker 2: Leo Curtis right, Curtis, Yeah he did, He didn't.
- 23:42Speaker 13: Chad GBT didn't have my roster, but I knew he
- 23:44Speaker 13: had a seven three guy and actually he can shoot
- 23:46Speaker 13: it too.
- 23:47Speaker 14: Freshman right, freshman.
- 23:49Speaker 2: Big, tall, long guy he plays in that BYU game.
- 23:52Speaker 2: I mean he's a giant. He looks like, you know who,
- 23:54Speaker 2: he looks like. He looks like a Purdue boiler Maker, looks.
- 23:58Speaker 14: Like give more of those Predue boiler Makers on the team.
- 24:05Speaker 2: And then last one to mention that, you know, maybe
- 24:10Speaker 2: he'll see some playing time. I wasn't expecting it, but.
- 24:13Speaker 13: I mean, if you shoot it as well as you
- 24:15Speaker 13: did against Midland, uh and Brandon Frager, thank he hit
- 24:20Speaker 13: six or seven threes in that game. Braden Frigger from
- 24:24Speaker 13: Lincoln Southwest freshman, I I, you know, I don't think
- 24:27Speaker 13: he'll probably see the court too much, but you never know.
- 24:29Speaker 13: I mean, he's he definitely looks the part as a
- 24:34Speaker 13: Division one athlete, doesn't look like a typical Lincoln Nebraska
- 24:40Speaker 13: like walk on type of player, so he might see
- 24:43Speaker 13: the court.
- 24:44Speaker 2: Never know, missing anybody.
- 24:49Speaker 14: I mean there's just a couple of bench people that
- 24:51Speaker 14: aren't you know, like those the Nebraska kids that are
- 24:54Speaker 14: on the roster but will never play. Yep, No, I
- 25:00Speaker 14: think that that's everyone that we're going to see play
- 25:01Speaker 14: this year. Seeming all goes well, I will like to.
- 25:06Speaker 14: I mean, just as we're kind of talking general roster
- 25:10Speaker 14: our overall size, we're pretty big this year. I mean
- 25:12Speaker 14: we were kind of last year we had we had
- 25:15Speaker 14: more top end height last year with Braxton b. But
- 25:21Speaker 14: I mean you run through the roster six six six eight,
- 25:24Speaker 14: six seven, six ten, sixty six seven to one six four, six, seven,
- 25:28Speaker 14: six eight sa FOI burg just gonna say that six four,
- 25:32Speaker 14: six eleven, sixty three, six ten, sixty six sixty seven.
- 25:34Speaker 14: So I mean we're we aren't. Our guards are big
- 25:41Speaker 14: and our bigs are on the smaller side of big,
- 25:43Speaker 14: but we're like consistent six seven to six ten.
- 25:49Speaker 13: That's definitely been a theme of spreads kind of roster
- 25:54Speaker 13: transformation over the past few years. We definitely went we
- 25:59Speaker 13: were very big well the two years ago making the
- 26:02Speaker 13: tournam but that team had some very sneaky length, but
- 26:05Speaker 13: where we were exposed was.
- 26:08Speaker 2: Defensively, which that.
- 26:12Speaker 13: That Texas A and M team just torched us with
- 26:16Speaker 13: their length until last year we went we went.
- 26:19Speaker 14: The Tech I'm not going Texan. They also had a
- 26:22Speaker 14: guy who had hit three three putters his entire career
- 26:24Speaker 14: make four that one time he was a senior or
- 26:28Speaker 14: something crazy.
- 26:29Speaker 4: It's just like.
- 26:31Speaker 14: Whatever.
- 26:32Speaker 13: So that kind of did a complete like flip of
- 26:36Speaker 13: the mindset last year to where we got very very long,
- 26:38Speaker 13: but then we didn't get shooters.
- 26:40Speaker 2: And we lacked that. So now hopefully we have a
- 26:42Speaker 2: good balance this year heading into the year schedule. Let's
- 26:49Speaker 2: look at that. Here we have I believe I counted
- 26:55Speaker 2: thirty one games or thirty games.
- 27:00Speaker 14: Four, Oh, it didn't even count how many?
- 27:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I think we have thirty games.
- 27:04Speaker 13: Here the projected record from teamerankings dot com, which I'd
- 27:11Speaker 13: like to use a lot, especially as you as look
- 27:14Speaker 13: at bracketology, they have us at sixteen zero point six wins.
- 27:18Speaker 2: And thirteen point four losses.
- 27:22Speaker 13: That with a eight was it eight to eight to
- 27:27Speaker 13: twelve conference wins which we played twenty conference games, So
- 27:32Speaker 13: I mean, I think we've said it in the past.
- 27:35Speaker 13: Get above five hundred conference play and have a strong
- 27:41Speaker 13: non conference performance and you're gonna have a pretty good
- 27:44Speaker 13: shot at getting in the tournament. The non conferences here
- 27:50Speaker 13: pretty easy, pretty favorable. I chopped seven wins up just
- 27:56Speaker 13: looking at the schedule, and we probably shouldn't do that.
- 27:59Speaker 2: But going to that, we can just.
- 28:01Speaker 14: Say, w we're winning those in those Western Georgia, Maryland,
- 28:07Speaker 14: Eastern New Mexico, Winthrop, UC Upstate, North Dakota, New Hampshire.
- 28:13Speaker 2: Yes, there you go.
- 28:15Speaker 14: Boom.
- 28:16Speaker 13: The next non conference games here that are gonna be key.
- 28:22Speaker 13: I think we got to get I mean, I'm gonna
- 28:24Speaker 13: say two, if.
- 28:25Speaker 2: Not three of these for our goal here winning a
- 28:29Speaker 2: tournament game. We play Oklahoma here in a couple of weeks.
- 28:32Speaker 13: It's gonna come up quicker, and we think in soot
- 28:34Speaker 13: Falls it'll be a neutral site game. Oklahoma is preseason
- 28:39Speaker 13: ranked in some of the polls towards it towards the
- 28:42Speaker 13: twenty second ish that that'll be a good, tough neutral
- 28:47Speaker 13: site game here early in the year. Then that next
- 28:51Speaker 13: week we play in a Kansas City tournament where we
- 28:55Speaker 13: play New Mexico to open that and then win or lose,
- 29:00Speaker 13: we play Kansas State or Mississippi State in that non
- 29:04Speaker 13: conference game. And then lastly we have the annual Nebraska
- 29:07Speaker 13: Creighton matchup, which is in Lincoln this year, which.
- 29:13Speaker 2: Always is a is a bonus.
- 29:15Speaker 14: And then some rock powers.
- 29:17Speaker 2: I don't even rock powers.
- 29:20Speaker 14: I don't know what just happened. I have ESPN open
- 29:23Speaker 14: on one of these tabs, so something was to autoloaded.
- 29:29Speaker 13: So anyways, non conference schedule again very favorable. I do
- 29:33Speaker 13: like the approach I do think in today's world, and
- 29:35Speaker 13: no matter it's college football, college basketball, baseball, whatever you
- 29:40Speaker 13: want to talk about.
- 29:41Speaker 2: Easier schedule, always.
- 29:44Speaker 13: Wins look better than playing tough teams right now, that's
- 29:47Speaker 13: just the way that people evaluate comparisons. Like, if you
- 29:51Speaker 13: have more wins, it helps you out and obviously strict
- 29:54Speaker 13: the schedule and all that matters. But if you if
- 29:56Speaker 13: you can win, it puts you in a better spot.
- 30:02Speaker 14: Yeah. I mean, like I said, I don't only give
- 30:05Speaker 14: it us automatic w's, but it's pretty favorable. We do
- 30:09Speaker 14: have a tough stretch when it starts, because we hit Creighton, Wisconsin,
- 30:14Speaker 14: and Illinois back. I mean, those three in a row,
- 30:17Speaker 14: but the first two are at home, and I think
- 30:24Speaker 14: just having I mean just having those first, if we
- 30:27Speaker 14: could get through Oklahoma, I want to preface it. The
- 30:32Speaker 14: BYU win, I think is huge because it just kind
- 30:37Speaker 14: of starts the ball, even though it's just an exhibition game.
- 30:41Speaker 14: It's like, Okay, we're pretty good. We can keep up
- 30:43Speaker 14: with them, and so hopefully that carries in we go through.
- 30:46Speaker 14: We beat Oklahoma. So we start the season out. Let's
- 30:49Speaker 14: eave one, two, three, four, five, six, seven with you
- 30:53Speaker 14: know seven and oh going into Creighton. I at Creighton
- 30:57Speaker 14: at home, I just I think you feel pretty good.
- 31:00Speaker 14: And like you said, the wins are important. To make
- 31:03Speaker 14: the tournament, you probably have at least have at least
- 31:06Speaker 14: have to have twenty wins. Maybe probably yeah, twenty. I
- 31:10Speaker 14: feel like last year we didn't make it. We ended
- 31:14Speaker 14: the year, maybe not even twenty nineteen ish, but yeah,
- 31:19Speaker 14: if we win. So again, like you said, you win
- 31:22Speaker 14: your your non con and you go five hundred and
- 31:24Speaker 14: Big ten play, you're pretty much in the tournament. You
- 31:28Speaker 14: just have to win the non con and it feels
- 31:31Speaker 14: it feels so doable, especially after that BYU game. You're like, Okay,
- 31:35Speaker 14: Rank Mast is back, JaMarcus Lawrence is back. I mean,
- 31:39Speaker 14: those are two pieces from our tournament, you know, tournament
- 31:43Speaker 14: team that lost, but they were important pieces. The JaMarcus
- 31:46Speaker 14: laws was as important as Rank Mast obviously, but Rank
- 31:50Speaker 14: Mass was the engine of that team, and he's back.
- 31:54Speaker 14: So you think, and you know, we're in the NL
- 31:59Speaker 14: era where that those top talent the town's at a
- 32:02Speaker 14: little bit more spread out across everyone, so everyone's a
- 32:04Speaker 14: little bit better, but the top's also a little bit worse.
- 32:07Speaker 14: I know we're not talking full Big ten picture, but
- 32:09Speaker 14: you think talk about the Big ten outside of Purdue.
- 32:14Speaker 14: I don't know. It really doesn't seem to be a that's,
- 32:18Speaker 14: you know, very scary team that like we can't beat them.
- 32:21Speaker 14: And even then Perdue, we've we've been a little bit
- 32:23Speaker 14: of Purdue killers, not killers, but we put up we
- 32:28Speaker 14: put up fight again, you know. So I feel pretty
- 32:33Speaker 14: good about it, to be honest, just I think the
- 32:36Speaker 14: Big Ten is gonna have a little bit of a
- 32:38Speaker 14: down year or non cons pretty soft. And our team's old,
- 32:44Speaker 14: I mean rank mass is twenty four. Most of our
- 32:47Speaker 14: players that are going to be playing our juniors or seniors,
- 32:50Speaker 14: and I think that that bodes well for tournament teams
- 32:55Speaker 14: that the one and done teams just have not have
- 32:58Speaker 14: not done well come postseason. So I feel good. I
- 33:03Speaker 14: feel good.
- 33:05Speaker 2: You are always the.
- 33:08Speaker 13: Very yeah Nebraska basketball, I Will says. Austin's like he
- 33:11Speaker 13: loves it.
- 33:11Speaker 2: I love it.
- 33:16Speaker 14: I This is also might be the whitest basketball team
- 33:19Speaker 14: we've had in a lot, not that it's a good
- 33:20Speaker 14: or bad thing, but you look at the roster picture,
- 33:22Speaker 14: it's like, oh man, we're gonna have five white boys
- 33:24Speaker 14: out there at some point.
- 33:26Speaker 13: Yes, actually I think we When we started off against
- 33:29Speaker 13: b Yu, it was flip flop of like b yu
- 33:33Speaker 13: is traditionally you.
- 33:34Speaker 14: Would think.
- 33:36Speaker 13: Whiteople you know, and they didn't. It was the opposite,
- 33:41Speaker 13: Like we rolled out five guys, so it was it
- 33:44Speaker 13: was funny. But I do think you know that to
- 33:48Speaker 13: your point that the team itself is a veteran experienced
- 33:55Speaker 13: group and they were last year too, and we saw
- 33:57Speaker 13: how that has a very big impact in a in
- 34:01Speaker 13: a stretch of a thirty game season. This group concerns
- 34:06Speaker 13: me with the lack of losing Bryce, I think I
- 34:09Speaker 13: mentioned that earlier and.
- 34:11Speaker 2: Yep, that you're right.
- 34:13Speaker 13: We will be in competitive I think in a lot
- 34:16Speaker 13: of conference, a lot of most all of our games
- 34:18Speaker 13: this year. When you're in a lot of close games,
- 34:21Speaker 13: you sometimes just need a stud to go make plays,
- 34:24Speaker 13: and coaching can only do so much or scheming can
- 34:27Speaker 13: only do so much, where you just gotta have a
- 34:28Speaker 13: guy and Bryce did that several times last year for us.
- 34:32Speaker 13: And that's where I'm a little bit like, who's going to.
- 34:35Speaker 2: Do that and and kind of carry that?
- 34:38Speaker 13: And the best part about Bryce he did that he
- 34:40Speaker 13: did it with all in a like calm and cool
- 34:43Speaker 13: and collected personality, and he just he was a very
- 34:47Speaker 13: level headed leader for this group, and that's why I
- 34:50Speaker 13: think he was so special.
- 34:52Speaker 14: Yeah, him and Juwan as a tandem was perfect.
- 34:55Speaker 2: They were.
- 34:59Speaker 14: It was that will be missed. And you know you're
- 35:04Speaker 14: talking about as being competitive all our games, Ken Palm
- 35:07Speaker 14: has us as underdogs for our first five. We're not
- 35:10Speaker 14: favorites in the Big Ten game until January per Ken Palm,
- 35:14Speaker 14: not necessarily by books, which we do.
- 35:17Speaker 13: Start out in Big Ten play with Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan State,
- 35:22Speaker 13: and then Ohio State.
- 35:23Speaker 2: Indiana.
- 35:24Speaker 14: Yeah so, and Indiana's got a new coach this year,
- 35:26Speaker 14: so they're supposed to be a little bit better.
- 35:31Speaker 2: Okay, Well, yeah, let's do predictions here.
- 35:35Speaker 13: I mean, if I hadn't throw a stab at a record,
- 35:40Speaker 13: I just feel like nineteen and eleven is a safe bet.
- 35:43Speaker 14: Yep. I was honestly nineteen eleven. I thought about going higher,
- 35:47Speaker 14: just because you start running through it's like, okay, you know,
- 35:52Speaker 14: like I said, the Big Ten might not be as
- 35:53Speaker 14: good as we thought. Not that I don't think we
- 35:56Speaker 14: really thought it was gonna be that good, but maybe
- 35:58Speaker 14: I'll go more. I'll go twenty ten. I'm not gonna
- 36:01Speaker 14: be too aggressive.
- 36:02Speaker 13: I'm what I do think this team has a lot
- 36:04Speaker 13: lower for than a higher ceiling. I will say that
- 36:07Speaker 13: this team does not feel like a team that can
- 36:11Speaker 13: just start rolling through a schedule. I also think this
- 36:14Speaker 13: team hopefully doesn't have lapses where we lose five in
- 36:18Speaker 13: a row.
- 36:19Speaker 14: Yeah, that's the only you Just like I said, you
- 36:22Speaker 14: think about back to last year again. I know we
- 36:23Speaker 14: don't have Brice you on, but it's two years in
- 36:26Speaker 14: a row that we felt good with like six games
- 36:28Speaker 14: left in the year of like we're gonna make the tournament.
- 36:31Speaker 14: One year, we did make the tournament, and we had
- 36:33Speaker 14: a great four minutes as the best four minutes of
- 36:36Speaker 14: Nebraska basketball history. I stand by that I never been
- 36:40Speaker 14: more excited about Nebraska back and then last year I
- 36:45Speaker 14: thought we were a lot to make the tournament and
- 36:47Speaker 14: then we just absolutely buckled. But maybe that's because our
- 36:56Speaker 14: team was, you know, it was a little bit more isocentric,
- 36:59Speaker 14: and we had some injuries going into the end of
- 37:03Speaker 14: the year. But so I feel that those two years,
- 37:07Speaker 14: the momentum wasn't totally lost, and then we got it
- 37:08Speaker 14: all back to the Crown. I can just feel it
- 37:11Speaker 14: rolling into this year.
- 37:13Speaker 13: And I'll say that like a roster, I do the
- 37:16Speaker 13: coaching staff is going to earn their money from a
- 37:19Speaker 13: just ex's and no standpoint. I think this year, which
- 37:22Speaker 13: I do think, we have a very strong x's and
- 37:24Speaker 13: no type coaching staff team just because we don't have
- 37:26Speaker 13: a stud player that's going to bail us out. So
- 37:29Speaker 13: you do have to be very efficient in your game
- 37:32Speaker 13: plan in executing that to win a lot of these games.
- 37:36Speaker 13: So yeah, I'll go nineteen eleven. You know, I think
- 37:40Speaker 13: the ceiling and floor I have a lot lower floor.
- 37:43Speaker 13: I don't think there is obviously a world at the
- 37:45Speaker 13: bottom could fall out. I don't think it'll happen, but
- 37:50Speaker 13: if it does, you know, again, for the future of
- 37:52Speaker 13: the program, it's not like to me the end of
- 37:54Speaker 13: the world. We're also we're at a point with Hoiberger
- 37:56Speaker 13: right now where it's let's step up or and not
- 38:01Speaker 13: be complacent like we talked about earlier.
- 38:03Speaker 14: So yeah, I think we'll go twenty and ten, probably
- 38:05Speaker 14: finish around that eight seven to nine range in the
- 38:09Speaker 14: Big ten, and I do think we'll make a tournament game.
- 38:16Speaker 14: I haven't decided I'm going to purchase my tickets for
- 38:17Speaker 14: the Final four in Indianapolis yet, but we'll wait all
- 38:21Speaker 14: wait see how Monday goes by.
- 38:23Speaker 2: You didn't do that enough for you, b y.
- 38:24Speaker 14: You got me pretty close. But it was an exhibition,
- 38:27Speaker 14: you know.
- 38:30Speaker 2: All right, Well I'll do it.
- 38:31Speaker 14: I guess. Hold on, quick, women's just quick, women's. We're
- 38:37Speaker 14: coming back. We made turn in the last two years.
- 38:40Speaker 14: I think this year we win. We lost a Lexus
- 38:43Speaker 14: Markowski was a four time All Big Ten player, but
- 38:47Speaker 14: we're getting back Nali Potchi's coming back from injury. We
- 38:50Speaker 14: got a couple of good transfers. Outside of that, I
- 38:53Speaker 14: really don't feel like we lost that much production. I
- 38:57Speaker 14: think coach Williams is a good coach. So that's that's
- 39:02Speaker 14: my quick Kennedy Williams. So now we have two basketball
- 39:06Speaker 14: coaches with their kids on their rosters who I feel
- 39:09Speaker 14: pretty good about.
- 39:10Speaker 2: That.
- 39:11Speaker 14: Now the Big Ten outside of the USC doesn't really
- 39:18Speaker 14: have oh sorry U c l A. That's what I meant.
- 39:22Speaker 14: Seems pretty stomachable, and I again, our our start to
- 39:25Speaker 14: the season for the women's team is also pretty similar
- 39:28Speaker 14: to the men's where it's you know, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine,
- 39:36Speaker 14: nine wins that I feel pretty comfortable with. So feeling
- 39:40Speaker 14: pretty good about coach Williams and her career this year.
- 39:44Speaker 13: Yeah, we'll have to do a better job here this
- 39:45Speaker 13: year going through the women's stuff because our women's team,
- 39:48Speaker 13: I don't think we give them enough credit for the
- 39:53Speaker 13: success that they've had here in recent years.
- 39:55Speaker 14: So yeah, we won't. We won't run through all their
- 39:57Speaker 14: transfer and roster stuf because that would require most of
- 39:59Speaker 14: the listeners would be like, oh, yeah, I knew who
- 40:01Speaker 14: exactly was on our team last year. I don't know
- 40:05Speaker 14: if that's true this way. But and then Britt Prince
- 40:08Speaker 14: is back, your two Britt Prince experience. I'll big ten freshman,
- 40:12Speaker 14: It'll be good.
- 40:15Speaker 13: I agree, all right, well I'll do it for the
- 40:19Speaker 13: basketball preview episode. Check out the Oscar recap the usc
- 40:26Speaker 13: You're in another episode.
- 40:29Speaker 2: If you want, if you want.
- 40:32Speaker 14: If you had to watch this movie, like I'm good,
